In short

Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing Newcastle defeat, early-season character/mentality issues, and transfer-window chaos. The host argues Spurs must “start punching back” against opponents who believe they can beat them, and discusses squad/selection concerns plus possible incomings/outgoings.

Guest backgrounds

No guests appear in the transcript; it’s a solo host episode.

Key claims

Spurs lose “inevitably” and lack fight; De Zerbi’s lineup choices (e.g., Porro advanced, Gray shoehorned in) were odd. Goalkeeping is a concern: Kinsky isn’t ready for Spurs’ No.1 role. Sandro Tonali looks unfit and underwhelming (blowing after ~20 minutes). Van Hecker has been disappointing. Richarlison’s public “circus” over a potential Everton swap is tiresome and suggests behind-the-scenes tension.

Notable examples

Newcastle match (avoidably lost); Charlton win as a needed lift; Tonali’s fitness vs Newcastle; Richarlison/Elman-Diouf swap talk; Kevin Danso transfer uncertainty; Everton’s Amadou Onana? (Die) interest and social-media screenshots about Tottenham not being a Champions League destination.

1:17Jack:Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Rule the Roost podcast. um i'm not on completely top form at the moment if you've not seen anything if you've been wondering where i've been for the past few matches and over the last week uh been quite ill quite suddenly um basically the long story short is started to get a bit of a fever felt i had tonsillitis ended up with me going to A &E basically having an abscess removed from inside of my throat from behind my tonsils loss of antibiotics went under general anesthetic I'm kind of tired I've never had general anesthetic before that's a ride that I'll talk about sometime else but um yeah kind of a weird experience been a weird week um I think I physically obviously I've had something on my throat which isn't great for podcasting but also just mentally I'm quite tired I feel a bit spent so I'm not gonna you know go on for as long as I maybe might but maybe I will we'll see it just feels like there's quite a lot going on right now and it's quite helpful to sort of get stuff out doesn't it isn't it I mean we're on the verge of the transfer window first and foremost so I think there's always kind of a bit of chaos around that so the important like I guess the thing I also want to do here is like separate where the chaos is bleeding in from say what I want to call external factors by external I mean stuff that isn't happening within the club right now so links to players who either want to go or come in and any of the sort of the result in chat around that and then i guess the internal factors are more about the players they sort of bleed into both don't they it's not clean separation i guess just more stuff on a match day stuff that we do like or don't like that deserve he's doing versus transfer business really that would have probably been a better way of putting it right um i mean the newcastle game was for anybody watching this yes i am drinking out of a small glass teapot um the newcastle game i thought was very disappointing if i'm honest and can i just say as well you got to bear in mind like a lot of my sort of opinions and stuff right now are probably tempered with contending with health stuff so maybe I don't have as much capacity to care about a level of understanding for things when it comes to football um so I want to say up front like I'm not terrified by our start to the season I don't think it's like this is terrible i'm not that bothered about it in a certain way but conversely i am actually really bothered about it as well and i find certain things about it quite irritating it's quite difficult i'm fine i don't know about you but i'm finding quite difficult to get a handle really on how it is and i don't know if this is just me like i say with health stuff or if this is because of the way the last couple of years have played out at Spurs.

4:57Jack:I'm finding that particularly difficult. I mean, let me... I've seen a lot of people at the back of the Newcastle game say it was actually all right. Spurs were actually pretty good. And barring some things happening, we wouldn't have lost. But we did lose. And we lost in pretty disappointing fashion. we lost in i would say probably quite an avoidable fashion um we might have had certain good passages of play or what have you i won't deny that but then it felt that when those opportunities presented themselves to newcastle they took them it also felt like newcastle had this feeling that if they kept knocking on the door they would eventually you know if they just kept shut they kept spurs shut out and they kept knocking on the door they would get one over us i guess the difficult thing is here that you start to project these kind of intangibles which are based on nothing more than like our own hunch about what's going on to me it felt like newcastle are a team that should be beatable at home they've gone through a significant amount of upheaval in their squad this summer there's enough kind of chaos around them they've appointed a new manager so on and so forth yeah my gut feeling on it is that throughout all of that it still seems to be that an opposition team and again like I say this is based on just a hunch it feels like the opposition coaching staff or whoever it is can say you can get a Tottenham they can be beaten and it feels like that's a massive hurdle we have to overcome as a team right now and i don't think it's good enough personally speaking to just say we had a few good passages of play we're trying to bed in a lot of new players so on and so forth when you basically see a game play out like the past two games really play out in much the same fashion as they have done for the past two seasons.

7:24Jack:Spurs just looking like they're inevitably losing. There being very little character, there being very little will or fight throughout the game. Having fans clutch at straws afterwards saying, if these things happened, it would have been different. But, you know, that's one of those old sort of parables you can apply to any part of your life. the fact remains that Spurs continue to lose games and lose games in a pretty underwhelming fashion and I think given the outlay on the squads the trust that's been placed in Roberto Dezerbi that is disappointing two losses can look very different and I do think that the Brentford loss and the Newcastle loss do look different because I do take on board that there were I think I think the Brentford game was largely abject if I'm honest I think the Newcastle game there were glimmers of hope but we got to be past the stage of glimmers of hope I think the standards need to be higher and I think Deserby will be making that point I also just do kind of think that the team probably will come good I do think there's too much talent there to a certain degree but it is it is kind of disappointing and you know I really you know the Charlton game was a much needed lift regardless of who the opposition was Spurs have needed a win like that in a few years you know I don't think we've thrashed anybody in quite some time anyway it feels like maybe we have but it doesn't it doesn't feel like we have because of the way we've played for so long um and i just you know i can't again like i said i know i'm pretty jaded right i'm recovering and all that type of thing and i think that is probably taking its toll on me mentally right now um so my capacity to kind of envision the brighter better world in which Spurs will be miles better and everyone will be settled after 10 games and we'll finish the season strong is severely limited at the moment my capacity right now is to I guess sort of wallow in the here and now a bit which is to like I say like rapidly flip between not actually caring and being kind of annoyed annoyed and just kind of uh resigned to this sense that i can't be dealing with another season like last year or the the year before that again sans the the europa league right

10:17Jack:i just can't be dealing i can't be dealing you know when you see like already a story about alanga doing like a thierry omri celebration at our ground and stuff it's just you know you're just in that place of being like i'll just piss off you know just just leave us alone at the moment let's get on with it so i don't you know i'm trying not to give too much capacity to that type of thing that is kind of frustrating um bits from the game that i guess stuck out for me particularly i am going to go early um i'm not blaming him i don't think it's entirely his fault and i don't think he's a bad player but i think we need uh an established senior goalkeeper uh i from already from the sort of the early signs of kinski i don't think he's a i don't think he's ready i personally just don't think he's of the required standard to be tottenham's number one, basically, right now.

11:58Jack:I think he doesn't look fully sure of himself. I think his decision making is suspect.

12:07Jack:The command of his line, I find suspect. he yeah he's good with his feet but i just i just i don't think he's good enough personally right now i think he's got a lot of ability i think he'd be very good but he's a very young goalkeeper and i don't think he's ready yet um so you know i i don't know there's been some talk that we might be after another goalkeeper before the window shuts i'd welcome that personally sandra tonali i'm anybody that's listened to this knows i'm big fan of sandra tonali really really delighted um with the signing i i personally thought he was really poor against newcastle i've seen some people again putting maybe a bit of a brighter side on it i just don't think he was good enough i don't think a player you know shouldn't be weighed down by their price tag they're always going to be to a certain degree but they shouldn't be to a to a degree but I think you need to see a bit more you need to see a bit more from the player individually I think I think the the fitness the state of his fitness coming into this season is really very disappointing and I think it's quite inexcusable from his perspective as a professional trying to make a good impression at a new club um i don't think he's fit i think after literally about 20 minutes on the weekend he looked like he was blowing um he didn't have the world cup i just i don't i don't think that's good enough personally i think there's enough signs there to suggest that he's going to be a fine player when he is fully up to to fitness but you know right now rodrigo Benzankar looks like our best midfielder which is you know something I didn't think I'd hear myself saying um Matias Fernandez is just settling in he's getting up to fitness but he looks very bright he looks very encouraging um I really liked Omar Mamouche um I thought he was aggressive I don't think we really created much for him uh I love but I like that he was already trying sort of shots from distance like he was trying to beat his man i think he's a really really good bit of business i'm really excited by him i was so so gutted about savina being injured hopefully it won't be a long-term thing at all but it's just it's so frustrating and it's so annoying to have like the optimism after like charlton and everything and just his signature in general be pricked come the weekend do you know i mean this is i mean when i'm talking about there being a multitude of different factors a load of different things at play right now that is stuff like that where you're just like come on man just like just let us get a bit of momentum you know let us get a bit of momentum um but you know there's there's plenty of good I think Van Hecker is alarmingly disappointing since he's come in as well.

15:23Jack:That's one other thing I do need to say because I've gone big on him and spoken about how excited I am for him and how good I think he's going to be. And he's looked way off the standard. I also think, personally speaking,

15:40Jack:but like a point that, you know, is not original here, but I agree with is that Deserby's sort of starting lineup was kind of strange. Playing Porro in that advanced role, shoehorning Gray in again. It's, you know, let's just settle things down. Let's make it a bit more straightforward. But he's got credit in the bank. I'm not, you know, I'm not going all Deserby out or anything like that. He kept the team up and he deserves a bit of kind of time and space to whatever. try and get things going. I just, you know, it's just difficult when Spurs have a start to the season like this because what happens is naturally emotions, feelings, storylines bleed in from last season into this one, right?

16:35Jack:And that can be poisonous if that takes hold. and we can all try harder as fans and stuff to not let that take hold blah blah blah I get that but at the same time we just want to sit and enjoy our football team right and of course we're going to worry about it straight away if things don't look good because we don't have any active control over the situation other than you know cheering on a match day or whatever so it's always going to be easier for us to get kind of panicked about stuff and get into arguments on the internet about players or games or whatever um and that's yeah that's that's the kind of that's the tricky place i think we find ourselves in i think it's all just all feels a bit chaotic and i sort of feel that with a lot of the talk the past few days i guess out the back of it with the players that want to come and go and all this type of thing um i mean richarlison is a big one of these so we're trying to get elman and die from um everton it's apparently two separate deals him coming to spurs and richarlison going the other way but it feels like there's a loose kind of swap thing going on there obviously De Zerbi's come out a few times now and said that Richarlison says he wants to stay wants to go wants to say wants to go which has led to Richarlison doing his childish thing of putting out some kind of you know the sort of the level of social media posts that you would put out when you're a teenager and I know we need to remember that a lot of these footballers are kind of insulated they're ripped from society at a certain age and they don't really process the world in the same way as you or I but it's just really tedious to have Richarlison acting like a teenager in public posting these things about not being a villain and I'm just I'm bored of him if I'm honest I know there's merit to him as a footballer I know there is I don't you know I need to be told that by anybody i'm acutely aware of like his function within the team and how we don't have many players that can perform that capacity but we also don't have many players that you know are as inconsistently available as he is we don't have as many players that just constantly feel the need to make everything about them um in a in a in a quite sort of pure our way i'm just sort of tired of him you know i can't be bothered for it i find i found this stuff the past few days really disappointing it's really put me off him as a character um chefs are supreme one of the itks that you know i find many of these guys quite interesting to varying degrees and stuff and i know many of you write them off as firsthand but i just say from my perspective i see certain ones of these itk say stuff consistently enough that feels kind of on the nose before it happens and it sounds as though all is not well between richarlison and the club behind the scenes he knows he doesn't have long left on his contract and will hope to get a larger contract than the one that everton are currently prepared to offer him so whether we'll get him out of the club or not i don't know um but i do want him gone i just want his noise gone i want the circus of it all gone i just sort of don't want to look at his face anymore if i'm honest i know it sounds pretty mean-spirited and stuff i'm just i'm bored of him as a character um yeah i just don't have the tolerance for it if i'm honest with you um but i do think we're going to need like you know somebody who i would have previously turned my nose up at but just looking at the way sort of football is and looking at like the past couple of games anyway i do really think spurs do need somebody like a mateta or uh an eagle tiago or somebody like that you know brian brobby um we can come on to brian brobby i guess with the kevin danso stuff i feel like we need one of those strikers I feel like we need a decent lump up top you know um I can't dive into it properly because I don't fully understand it I don't have a full grasp on it but John McKenzie people know John McKenzie he's been talking about some of his thoughts about the Premier League that we're entering like a new low possession era for for the Premier League where teams seem to be finding success through creating quick opportunities knock the ball up the pitch quickly get it to your attackers quickly so i guess that will be through routes like savinho kudos players who can maraud players who can run disrupt and create space and opportunities for your solanquis for your mamushas and then i guess there's probably a more agricultural side to that which is get the ball up into the mixer to a lump so in short let's just have a lump that can just provide us something of a another dimension another option because Richarlison despite the fact that we all know was a sort of nippy winger a quick skillful attacker once upon a time has sort of changed his game as his body's changed and injuries have changed him into something of a target man um and he's done that to varying degrees of effectiveness but he's obviously a talented footballer um but we just need somebody more reliable somebody without as much baggage and if we could i mean it's not going to happen but you know we've got this sort of 11th hour losing of kevin danso which i find understandable but very disappointing um because we somehow try and get Brian Brobby or whatever as a part of that it's not going to happen is it but that to me is the sort of player that Spurs maybe we need in that in that kind of fold um things are just I don't know we just I think we're entering this era of just less pretty football um it's never really been that pretty in my opinion anyway under Pep Guardiola's tutelage but there's been people sort of raging against that Pochettino Jurgen Klopp and now you've got Mikel Arteta who's sort of taken it the other way and ushered in this more I don't know just this unpleasant way of doing things and you know I don't know if that's kind of going to be what does Erby wants to do or if he just feels that's the changing tide but I don't think Spurs are that well equipped for it right now but maybe he wants to do something completely different and we don't need that I am disappointed that Kevin Dancer wants to go I do understand it we've prioritized signing center backs pushed him further down the pecking order which feels kind of unfair I think again he's a player that I know has limitations but I think with these sort of discussions we often tend to focus on the limitations of a player and not about the things that they can bring to a team and I think Danso is more often than not very solid I think he's had one clanger which I think was unfair as well really to say as a clanger and he's very reliable in the air he seems to be a good personality but if he wants out it's totally understandable it just leaves us in a bit of a a bit of a bad spot really um because i just sort of contemplate and i wonder how many players that we have that are capable of dealing with large aggressive teams with an aerial dominance with an aerial threat not many i'd wager um we are quite a small team all of our players man for man are pretty short pretty small even the ones that are quite big are not very good in the air windy raised a really good point whenever i spoke to him um which was you know it's curious that the two dutch lads are not very good in the air and it may be because the dutch prioritize close control ball at feet small-sided games that type of thing which yeah you know is an interesting perspective because it is curious that both van hecker and van de ven are two large center backs who are both pretty bad in the air um so that's something that we're going to need to get a grip on um i haven't really spoken about and die i'm you know i like him i i've you know i can't say i've sat and watched him religiously but i think he's always looked good every time I've seen him play for Everton.

26:02Jack:He's been good against us. He's 29 years old, so he should be at the point in his career when he just is flying now, and it does seem to be that way. I'm not getting too set on it. It felt a bit too straightforward. There's a fair bit of talk now that City and Chelsea are kind of circling around him, which sort of makes sense. i haven't been i've asked people on twitter and i haven't really got a definitive answer there's some screenshots doing the rounds of an everton fan who had either he tweeted or put like an instagram message up on a post or something it was essentially saying he's gutting to lose and die but it's especially gutting to lose him to tottenham because he should be going to a champions league team not a team that's just had back-to-back 17th place finishes and according to this screenshot and i liked that um now again you know social media and how much we read into all that type of thing and stuff but if that is legit and it it seems to be 50 50 the consensus on whether it is or not if it is legit that just from my personal perspective you know i don't i find that concerning i think yeah i don't judge the player for feeling that way i totally see why he would feel that way to be honest um but just in terms of like is that the energy we want coming into the club against somebody else that kind of feels like they don't really want to be there that they're kind of somehow being forced to be there or you know they've they've kind of would rather be elsewhere or they don't have the energy for this type of project i don't know do you know what i mean i i know that's reading a lot into a situation from a like on a social media post or a supposed like but i still think there's food for thought in and amongst all that that makes that just slightly uncomfortable um something you know that you'd rather not be happening you don't want that to be the energy coming into into this part of the season when the transfer window is going to close and we need all hands on deck and we need to start reversing our fortunes and turning things around but i do think throughout all of this the transfer window is that it is a destabilizing factor um i think while when you have the manager that continues to say every other week i'm not saying this is a criticism it's just a fact the manager saying every other week if players don't want to be here let him know and they can go while the window's open they are going to be thinking well maybe now's my chance so as much as you know people say oh thanks kev for doing this now the gaffer is inviting that on the gaffer speaking about him you know like i'm in the changing room but still does erby is inviting that sort of pressure on and i think he kind of welcomes that to a degree i think he wants to know where everybody's heads at he wants to have a good stock of who's with him and who's not and that's fine um i dare say things will settle down we saw the way in which he transformed the club in the in a short time in the tail end of last year so i think like my my semi-rational brain tells me that this has to come good we have spent too much money i do think we have too many good players for us to continue to be terrible oh perhaps sargon as well i'm i'm disappointed about that i want to say that too i am disappointed about that i'm disappointed that deserve he hasn't been able to find a room for him in his heart or in his plans whatever either one because i trust perhaps far more than i do bergval gray or gallagher i trust him on par with rodrigo bentanker um i know he has stagnated over the past couple of years and i don't think that's entirely his own fault I think it's largely not his own fault personally speaking but what I will say about Pat Matassar is consistently I see a player who always wants the ball who drops deep wants to get things moving play often goes through him and I think when he's at his best Tottenham are often at their best um pretty sure he provided the assist for the for the Europa League final goal as well so go well pap i think he's gonna kill it in syria i do i think it's a really good move for him juventus um i'll always have a lot of affection for him i really like him as a player and i'm i'm pretty i am pretty gutted he's like one of the few players i would say i'm actually pretty gutted to see go um i am gutted yeah i'm gutted that he's gone but also So, you know, I've got to practice what I preach and I'm just trying to get behind the team.

31:33Jack:And I'm not crying, all right? If you listen to it, my throat is not in a good place. I'm going to stop this in a minute because I'm kind of just sort of losing the thread a little bit. Like I say, I haven't really quite got the mental sort of wherewithal and the physical strength to sort of do too much of this at the moment. But I just wanted to check in and say hello and all that type of thing. But yeah, in short, I do think it will come all right for Spurs. I do think we're going to be too good to be in a similar position to last year. But maybe my sort of early season predictions that we could be, you know, finishing the Champions League places and stuff are pretty wide of the mark.

32:25Jack:um and that's just yeah it's me being a bit silly and being a bit getting a bit too over excited but sort of seeing i guess the deep the deep i don't want to say trauma i hate the way people just sort of use that was a really serious tone term um quite flippantly but i think a lot of the the bruises of the last few years are still weighing heavy on the club's soul somewhat and I don't really know how that happens when you've almost had a complete turnover of staff like at least in a playing capacity but it seems to somehow or another and that sort of plays into my theory I guess that it's more often about how other teams approach you as opposed to how you approach games yourself but we need to start punching um need to start punching teams on the nose it's funny just before this was talking with charlotte we were watching just like this program and we're talking about you know the this woman was talking about this horrific bullying she'd had as a kid at one summer camp she you know basically all she was overweight when she was a kid and all these other kids had like you know they were holding her down and they were like you know stripping her naked and they were like cutting her hair and punching her and beating her and stuff really awful really really awful stuff and you know you worry like as a parent you suddenly i think it's you know the first time in my life when i'm suddenly like god i the thought of somebody doing that to my little girl one day like i'd want to kill them you know but how do you how do you stop somebody else how do you give her the tools to be able to stick up for herself and it's not to blame it's not to victim blame anybody but at least try and put them on the best foot to stick up for themselves and all that type of thing and i just sort of remembered a story that like from my own childhood when i remember in like secondary school and there was there was a boy i'm not gonna say his name or anything but he had like a funny name that people used to make fun of and it was obviously it was like quite early on into like year seven quite early days of secondary school and so he obviously thought with me the chubby kid let's make fun of him i can like you know i think people gunning him all lesson let's make fun of him and it was like this like whiteboard piece of paper thing behind where i was in the desk and he drew like a picture of like a sort of like a fat stick man type thing behind me of an arrow pointing to me and i hadn't seen it and so some people looking back were starting to like laugh at me in the class and so i was then being made like this like public figure of derision if you get what i mean and it was funny in my head i'd i'd never done anything like this before in my life like I said I was what 10 11 years old or something like that but I just sort of I don't know I had this moment of clarity of like I have a crossroads in front of me here now where you can sort of lay down a marker and I remember I just got up off my seat walked around and punched him in the face it's the first time I ever punched it was in a class I got sent out massive bollocking and all that type of thing but I sort of knew in my head I had to do something in that situation so the point i'm sort of you know i bring that up because the root was we were talking about my daughter and i'd sort of say this isn't to give you carte blanche to like go around and beat kids up and be a bully or anything like that but always stick up for yourself always stick up for yourself like even if sometimes that means doing the wrong thing or feeling like you're going to be doing the wrong thing sometimes you just have to stick up for self and I think Tottenham just need to do that a bit now we just need to start dishing out a few punches on the nose because right now people don't respect us people are looking at us as soft touch FC the team that you can show up and beat especially at home we can't take any of these games for granted we just have to get them across the line but i want us to start battering teams i want us to get nasty um and i think that's what it's going to take it's going to take a few games of sport i think we need a run i think we need a run of winning games to sort of say right our heads are on now and we're acting serious it could have gone that way you know a lot of people are getting very angry about the penalty it was look by letter of the law today it was a penalty i still think those type of penalties are fairly soft i'm not going to sit here and say that is the most disgusting egregious kind of error that's ever not gone our way um it's kind of annoying because it's in the context of spurs never getting penalties anymore right but there we go um you know it's that's what it is but yeah i ended up a bit of a sort of almost sinister note there didn't i really talking about childhood childhood things and punching in faces and all that type of stuff but blame it on the cocktail of drugs that i'm on um and fatigue but if you have managed to get through i don't blame you if you've not but if you have managed to get through this much love to you thank you thank you for all the well wishes from everybody um who's sent them my way and everything like that it doesn't mean a lot i appreciate it um ratings reviews are always appreciated likes and subscribes i've got some cool stuff coming out on youtube pretty soon um that I'm going to be doing over well hopefully going to be doing over the next week or so maybe watch this space right now we'll see how I'm feeling but yeah um so come to YouTube go to patreon first patreon.com slash rtr pod so anything sort of outside of the norm that I make I'll put on there first but then yeah if you go to if you go to my YouTube follow it there and you'll see some uh yeah some some video content and stuff that i'm going to be making soon coming up which promises to be quite fun um so yeah thanks everybody uh thanks for tuning in i hope you took something from this you know it was quite nice to me to feel a little bit it's only been a week but it feels like it's been absolutely ages to be honest of you um so i've yeah enjoyed just making this little thing for you and uh i hope you've liked it as well much love to everybody um onto forest i guess up the spurs

Jack returns to the microphone following emergency throat surgery to deliver a raw, honest debrief on Tottenham's disappointing home defeat to Newcastle and the chaotic final days of the transfer window.

We break down what went wrong against Newcastle, examining why teams still arrive in North London believing Spurs can be easily turned over. Jack questions whether Antonin Kinsky is ready to be a Premier League number one, raises fitness concerns around Sandro Tonali, and reflects on the frustrating injury to Savio alongside the bright spark of Omar Marmoush.

Attention then turns to deadline week drama. We discuss the exhausting circus surrounding Richarlison, the potential arrival of Iliman Ndiaye, and Kevin Danso wanting out, which exposes a glaring lack of aerial dominance across the backline. Jack also shares his heartbreak over Pape Matar Sarr departing for Juventus.

Finally, we address the lingering cultural scars of the past two seasons, explaining why Roberto De Zerbi's side must ditch the "Soft Touch FC" tag, embrace a nastier edge, and start laying down markers against the rest of the league.
