In short

Tottenham’s managerial shake-up—whether Roberto De Zerbi will be respected and succeed—plus broader debate on Spurs’ club structure, recruitment, and power balance between CEO/sporting roles and the head coach.

Guests

Flav (from The Fighting Cock; Spurs fan/podcaster) and Rotheridge (host). Both discuss Spurs’ recent seasons and upcoming matches.

Guest backgrounds

Flav is a long-time Tottenham supporter and contributor to Spurs media (Fighting Cock). Rotheridge is the podcast host and co-discusses football club operations and match outlooks.

Key claims

Igor Tudor’s sacking was justified after poor results (notably Nottingham Forest). Thomas Frank’s tenure is blamed as the main pivot point for Spurs’ problems. De Zerbi is viewed as more “football-centric” and likely to command respect, given Spurs reportedly giving him “carte blanche.” Spurs’ modern structure is criticized as flip-flopping and lacking joined-up thinking; Langer’s authority is questioned.

Notable examples

Arsenal away collapse under Frank; De Zerbi’s past “lost his rag” incidents at Brighton/Marseille; De Zerbi’s training video with players; Mason Greenwood controversy; Kinsky’s potential “redemption arc” as Antonin Kinski returns vs Sunderland with Vicario out.

0:51What was that? Oh, shit. Sorry. Sorry. it is it's Skepta actually I'm calm I've got a devil in my palm is it the one he's done with Fred again

1:03Jack:no where are you at with Fred again I like him I think he's amazing I know he's posh and all that type of stuff but I don't really care you know I think he's brilliant yeah I don't care what you think about not you Jack obviously because I asked you directly but I don't care if you don't like him I don't care if you're critical how many just one I don't know if this is the best place actually I'm not going to start here I'm not going to start with that but you're not starting with class warfare right now it was less more race warfare actually yeah let's let's let's pivot away from that one shall we I can see Easter the grass has grown a bit around Easter time Gail are you obviously this is Flav from the Fighting Cock Flav thank you for joining me on Rotheridge's podcast it's been nice having a bit of time off from Spurs hasn't it yeah yeah yeah yeah it's flown by actually it's a free week so I was like what are we going to do and I'm like actually be able to record podcasts with no jeopardy with no misery um lean into some of these sort of subjects like you know the five pillars that will fix Tottenham Artsperh and you're recording these podcasts and you're like this wouldn't fix Tottenham Artsperh I did a podcast with Ben I did a podcast with a lab with Ben White who is a lovely guy um knows a lot about sort of finance and the way things work and that works in kind of mergers and acquisitions and shit like that so um and i got to the end of the podcast i'm like we just a lot of this is just hot air i think like we it none none of that they're never no one's going to be able to put any of this in place and even if they did it probably would have worked such as the the craziness of this this um this club that we followed but yeah it's been nice i've enjoyed the uh i've enjoyed the easter break murders and executions so i always think of you know Did you say?

2:46Jack:Yeah. I said mergers and acquisitions. It's brilliant. What film? They're remaking it with... Don't. Why? What's his name? You know, the one everyone fancies now. You fancy him, especially. Gosling? No. All right. No, obviously, I don't fancy Gosling. What's... Do you know what age I am now? I am... I don't know anyone's name now. I'm not... You know her off the telly, the one that sings the song. Timothee Chamele, that guy. No, no. The other one, the... He played Elvis in something. He was in the Bike Riders with Tom Hardy. Oh, these were the gruff voice. Yeah, kind of. He was in the Air, Air, Air.

3:26You think about the Pacific in the Air. Binder Brothers in the Air, yeah. That accent's forced, isn't it? Is it Brandon?

3:32Jack:Brandon, Brandon, Brandon, Brandon? I actually think Chamulé would be better than him because he's just so pristine. He was in Dune 2. Yeah, yeah. What's his name? Austin Butler. Ah, there we go. That's it. He's got a really deep voice, isn't he? And all the women, like, fucking swoon over him. All right. I mean, I don't know why go, but if you want to just go back and watch the original, it's magnificent. Should we talk about it? I think we should probably talk about Spurs, shouldn't we? There's been a... I don't really want to. I don't want to do it. It's fine. Everything's fine. We're fixed.

4:05Jack:Roberto De Zerbe's in. It was, you know, it was a bit of a decision to sack Igor Tudor. Obviously, there was a lot going on in his personal life, so I imagine that played into it. it's apparently a mutual parting of ways. Do you think it was the right thing to do though, really? Yes. The whole fucking thing was a disaster, wasn't it? From minute one. It was a bit. Yeah, yeah. I think it was clear. If you look at the last three games that he had, you had a decent performance against Liverpool, a really good performance against Atletico and a just complete capitulation against Forrest, which is the most important one of the lot.

4:38So it just, it was clear that it wasn't working. and he was trying to do too much and strange formations. Well, not strange, ones that certainly didn't fit the profile of the player we had. I just didn't understand. Tinkered a lot, didn't he? Tinkered. Didn't understand why he just didn't give himself the best shot by playing the players in their correct positions. Soza's lining up on the right-hand side of a 4-4-2. He never played there in his life. He's 19. He's just come from... Anyway, he needed someone. He didn't do too badly, actually. So yeah, it was time for him to go. I wasn't bothered at all, but I was more bothered that the club wouldn't be able to bring in someone

5:12Jack:that could keep us up. I was mostly bothered that the club didn't get rid of Thomas Frank sooner. I think that's the main pivot of this season for me. It obviously depends where it's going. I do think there's a moment. I can't think about what game it is, but it's before Christmas. And I feel like before Christmas time, I feel like we'd all seen enough. Anyone that's watched football for whatever length of time knew that it wasn't working, knew he was not the guy. Because it was, you know this, mate, it was press conference after press conference of him saying, well, we're good for 20 minutes.

5:43Jack:And if we can carry that across into whatever game, you know, while you've got Van de Ven and Spence sort of shrugging him off, walking past him on the pitch after not even half a season, it's, you know, it's not good. And I know that doesn't reflect well on those players either. However, what I would say before we start talking about him, they won't be doing that with Roberto De Zerbe, you know? That's kind of the way I look at it. they wouldn't have done that with Pochettino. You know, they wouldn't have, they wouldn't have even done that with Ange, I don't think, you know. It just shows you how badly Frank was for Tottenham with the, you know, asset of hindsight.

6:21But it was clear actually in the moment as well that it was a bad appointment and not, you know, the club was too big for him, the players were too big for him. And, you know, you can be critical of the players because, you know, be respectful regardless. You're being paid a lot of money, but I don't even think the money side of things comes into their mind. I think they were genuinely frustrated what was happening at the club. And they probably tried to grin and bear it for almost all of Frank's tenureship. And it just comes to a point where their emotions boil over in terms of Spence and Van der Beeren and all the stuff.

6:56The part of Frank's tenureship that I was genuinely worried about when I looked at it and I thought, oh my God, this is never going to work. It's the Arsenal game away. I've seen us get handedly beat by Arsenal more times than I care to even recall. But that was so passive and meek that it was just not acceptable. So I think, you know, it was fine. You know, you probably should have sacked him earlier, but Deservey turned the job down before Tudor, so they're probably devoid of options, really. The Tudor appointment was so strange and came out of nowhere. I wouldn't have called that. You could have given me a year to list.

7:36as many possible managers as I possibly could take that Spurs off and I would never have said him.

7:41Jack:Well, it was just, it was just, they'd lost Perattici. He was arguably one of the only sort of uniquely footballing minds in the building. Yeah. And he's somebody who'd been going on about it for ages, hadn't he? So they were just like, well, let's get him in because Fabio vouched for him. So that's what we can do. But I mean, that just as a side note, that also, I'm sorry, that puts Fabio Perattici on fraud watch for me. as well you know the fact he wanted Igor Chieger to be like our permanent manager over Frank even is yeah I mean we don't really have to think about him ever again but but I think I think probably and I'm guilty of this as well is that we probably give more credit to Pratachi because of the penting core and Kulosevsi signings in that in that summer winter transfer window that then meant that we went kicked into gear under Conte and finished fourth above Arsenal that was such a lovely moment following Spurs that all of he got he gained so much credit in that moment perhaps she came in we've got problems being in begging to call kulisevsky get conté to sign the club turned around in a very short amount of time um so yeah we give him huge amounts of credit but yeah largely probably neutral average performance as a sporting director so when deserve he's first linked to us and it seemed to be the case that he would be coming even even though there were things to iron out there were just certain noises around the deal that seemed to suggest, yeah, De Zerbi is probably going to be Tottenham's manager.

9:04Jack:How did you feel about that? Because, you know, I'll be honest. I wasn't overjoyed with the idea of it. I know there is obviously there's all the baggage of his Mason Greenwood and stuff like that at Marseille, but in the purely footballing sense, this is a guy that's hot-headed. You know, we've seen him at Spurs losing his rag with Stellini before over nothing, nothing like comments really. He mugged him off in an interview. he said something like oh you know De Zerbi's done a good job but he picked up where Graham Potter left off or something yeah something like that wasn't it yeah you know he lost his ass he went all you know I know I know about it didn't it it was a bit silly um you know and he's kind of he lost his ass at Bryan he's lost his ass at Marseille already and I just kind of thought you know if we're a keg of dynamite he's a match and it's you know it's dodgy that's my immediate feeling as well.

9:57The 18 months from now, we'll be looking for a new manager because he's exploded. You look into the reasons why he left Brighton. It wasn't that you mentioned saying losing his arse. It was more, it was never going to work because Brighton were never going to be able to move away from the structure that they'd created and that served them so well and Deserby wanted to bring in his own players. He felt in order to kick on, he could only do that if he identifies the players and for good reason, Brighton and said, well, that's never going to happen. You're going to have to find a new club. And they left.

10:28So in any sense, that makes sense. Especially now that he's come to Spurs and he's been given pretty much, if the reports are correct, been given carte blanche to make decisions because we have no one at the football club strong enough to make these decisions. They've really sort of handed over the keys to the Zerbi and said, right. Alex Ferguson. That's what they're saying in Italy. Yeah. Well, Alex Ferguson, I think Pochettino would have commanded something similar if he would have come back. Different energy, obviously. but Spurs are one of the few clubs, top flight clubs, certainly in the Premier League now, that will have a system that is more closely aligned to the way football clubs used to be run before they were modernised.

11:07Like, De Zerbe would never end up going to, I can't, maybe the Arsenal job because Arteta has that level of influence there. But in terms of that model, I don't know who else. And the reason why Arteta has that influence is because he's got to a position where obviously he demands it. And Arsenal continue to get better. so you why wouldn't you give him that that much uh freedom to make decisions right um but so so yeah i mean it is quite a unique position we find ourselves in you know he waited to the point where he could demand whatever he wants i was um and i'm okay with it because if it isn't he understands football and every decision he'll make regarding transfers type of contracts being offered the type of players being appropriate will be about what goes on in the pitch and we just haven't had that for a long for a long time it may be that it implodes and they go well we gave the Zerbi what he wanted it implodes his fault it's not our fault I'm sure there's some he's shielding the the owners to a certain extent but that will always happen especially if he's given freedom to make these decisions so um but we yeah he is the most football centric person at the club of for obvious reasons but he's making decisions above what a head coach would make I I think that could be a good thing.

12:23And Langer's the other guy who just feels like he's just so weak and meek and just lacking the charisma needed in order to create a culture at a football club. Can you imagine in any way De Zerbi backing down to Langer's authority?

12:36Jack:Not a chance. Do you think we might be seeing a sort of an era where football begins to pivot back to this a bit? I'm not saying the director of football age is dead, but we might be coming to a place where there's more of a compromise between this because it does feel like for quite some time we've been, I think, somewhat browbeaten into the understanding that, of course, it's better to have a director of football. Of course, it's better to have somebody that sets the tone of a football club who is appointing managers who can fit into that overall vision for a club and all that type of thing, right?

13:11Jack:As opposed to having a manager who has his own direct style of play, who brings in all the players he wants that match that style of play, And when said manager goes, that means everything's up shit creek. However, it feels like we've sort of had this era of managers that don't really have true power, that they're given a load of players that they don't particularly want to work with. And I think the most acute example we have of that at Tottenham is with Antonio Conte, who really didn't give many fucks and would just sit there and say, this is a club signing of players like Jed Spence. It feels to me, just as a gut feeling, maybe it's a bit proper football man, but this feels like a healthier approach it feels like a healthier approach overall for a manager to have more control over who comes in who goes out really I don't know I think you've got a better shot at success going that way I think in terms of how do you best spend your money probably the more modern structure is is better because if a head coach is sacked and you bring another one in who has a similar playing style or similar approach and philosophy to football, that in theory, those players that have been amassed previously would be then able to be used by the new head coach.

14:24With our scenario, if he leaves and he's bought players based on specifically his system and a new manager with new ideas or a new style of play comes in, who is different from him, he, in theory, would have a bunch of players that aren't fit for purpose. But I don't think it necessarily ever works like that anyway. like Michael Carrick is completely different from Amrim like Man United are a good example of this like before the ideal structure was um it was obviously the owners about like Ratcliffe and the Glazers or Ratcliffe in terms of footballing decisions then you had Omar Bereda who's the CEO which is our effectively our Venkatesham and then you had a sporting director and a technical director so Dan Ashworth was but he's left but it was someone like Javis Ilk who runs a football club and then you got jason wilcox who's a technical director who essentially would determine the style of play for the football club the players coming in the uh the youth team and with this kind of through way to bring in young players in who understand the way the first team player and all that sort of stuff and then obviously got recruitment and whatnot and then you've got the head coach so that's in theory like this in the modern era the kind of best way to get the most out of the money you spend.

15:37Jack:There's no guarantee of all that. How do you know all those names? Are you just reeling off all those names? Making me look fucking silly here. I'm sitting here saying, this is good. That's not very good, is it? What do you think about that? Do you think I'm a gammon? Blah. You're there giving us this fucking detailed breakdown of Manchester United's backroom stuff. I can't take... I'm not taking full credit for this, but there is a... You know, I do the lab, and we've got a guy called Anatole, and he often wants to talk about structure of a football club. So I've had this discussion before. I'm not just reeling this off.

16:09And I had to Google the names who were in roles while you were speaking. I'll be completely honest, all right? That's what happened.

16:15Jack:I'll let you off. I guess the point as well here is that if Spurs are trying to be a more modern progressive club using these structures, they're not doing it very well and they haven't been doing it very well for quite some time. If you consider the fact that both Thomas Frank and Roberto Dezerbi with two names that were high up on this supposed list of people to take us over. Once again, you know, that sort of flip-flopping approach that Spurs always do. I'm not saying that perhaps in an ideal situation, the way they play football is entirely different. Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn't. But at least the way in which they get there, right?

16:50Jack:The way in which they cross the bridge is completely different. You know, Thomas Frank would devise many different ways and many different whatever ways to cross a bridge, whereas De Zerbe would be probably screaming at them telling them to get their ass over to the other side sort of thing. It's two people with two very different temperaments, two very different approaches to man management, I would imagine at the very least, which again sort of hints at that lack of joined up thinking at the club. And look, you know, there's only so many conversations we can have about Langer, Venkatesham and everything like that.

17:22Jack:I guess to like bring it more to a sort of a question out the back of just the stuff we talk about all the time, do you expect to see them in post next season do you do you think if we stay up and deserve he hits the ground running and we start smashing it that will be enough to save them do you reckon this is their hell mary i'll do with them you tell yourself no one wants your college era band tees but on depop people are searching for exactly what you've got you once paid a small fortune for them at merch stands now a teenager who calls them vintage will offer that same small fortune back. Sell them easily on Depop.

17:59Jack:Just snap a few photos and we'll take care of the rest. Who knew your questionable music taste would be a money-making machine? Your style can make you cash. Start selling on Depop, where taste recognizes taste. No, I think Vecchio-Cutession stays regardless. To suggest that he isn't fit for purpose based on what this year has thrown at him as the CEO, I think it would be foolish of us to just replace with another one um i know that's an unpopular you know opinion but um a ceo's job the impact of his role it might be seen over three to five years not in transfer windows that's not a ceo's job necessarily to be judged by how many players you sign in this in the summer now and that kind of energy might come from the ceo but the job of that in that instance was piratichi and langer They're the ones that failed to identify the players.

18:53So I think Langer's position is under massive threat. And so it should be. I don't think we are served in any way by removing Venkateshian as the middleman between the Lewis's and the footballing aspects of the body, unless he has no authority, right? If it's true that the Lewis family decided to sack Frank against Venkateshian's wishes, then that's a massive issue. Then he has no authority. what really needs to happen is he just needs to be left alone to get on with his job and as long as that relationship with De Zerbi is a positive one then he will be able to and if you look at what Venkateson did with Arteta was just give him time and position and patience to get things right now there's a worry that he might give managers in our instance too much patience like he wanted to do for Frank that was that was something that was thrown at him that because arteta worked by being given patients and so so might frank so there is that i guess but no i think i think langers won't be long for the world i mean tottenham world and uh

20:03yeah i don't mean the planet i mean i'm very cold to be very successful this mortal coil but yeah so what there's been talk about about um the birds did deserve he choosing the next director of football which is the most ass about face away to go about this as you possibly can do but he needs somebody can get on with especially i mean especially him you know he you we you can see what type of personality he is you

20:32Jack:can see he's a difficult character to Zabi that he's a very particular man who whatever so and the thing is you know I'm I'm sort of of the opinion that sometimes as fans and I know this is rich given that we both do podcasts and talk about football all the time we probably go on about that sort of stuff a bit too much you know like like you say I'm there's probably so much that happens behind the scenes that we couldn't even begin to comprehend that we're just projecting more of like a gut feeling based upon like a team's performances on the pitch really which of course of course is a reflection of the work that they're doing behind the scenes but also you know i like a lot of people the thing is a lot of people getting very excited about the idea of doogie friedman being our like director of football but i was like but why why like what do you what do you actually know about him like what do you actually know about him the way he operates how he'd work with Spurs how he'd work with the people at Spurs we don't have a clue we really don't have a clue I mean like you know Paul O 'Keefe when he was on here before told me he was basically like in no uncertain terms Pochettino won't come back he will not come back to the club because there are significant people at the club who don't want him back the only person that ever wanted him back was Daniel Levy there is no appetite at the club and I was like yeah okay maybe but you know the fans all want him they want him and I think I think personally speaking for me I know the World Cup was a bit of a curveball and everything.

21:57Jack:But I think this is the clearest indicator. Giving Roberto De Zerbe a five-year contract is the clearest indicator that they aren't entertaining the idea of Pochettino. I don't understand that at all. I just cannot get my head around it. Someone mentioned this. I think it was Ricky. We did the pod, the fine court yesterday. They were saying it was kind of like too closely aligned to Daniel Levy. They wouldn't leave the Levy era in the past. But I couldn't give a shit what they want, right? What we want is a feel-good factor. what we need is the feel good factor. We need to bring him home so that he can continue his work.

22:30He's constantly talking about delivering trophies for Tottenham Hotspur. If you cannot see that, if your own ego or your infatuation with Daniel Levy's is so strong that you can't even see the value in bringing him back, then you're a massive issue. That said, it's dead in the water now.

22:45Jack:I'm not sure who said it, but it was apparently Viv Lewis as well, who is the one leading the anti-charge on that. Why? I saw that flow. For that stuff you said, for the for the dan is to they want a whole new era and everything like that and well you know what they make don't even write decisions they won't be a new era but when i shelve the emotional stuff mate i i kind of look i think one of the main things one of the positions i fell into and you know how much i love pochettino and everything but i did fall into this place where i thought they don't actually deserve i know we do i know we want him back but i don't think they deserve the sticking plaster of after of after how bad these two seasons have been and i know bill bow happened but it was an aberration and i keep saying that it was an amazing great thing that happened but cup wins happen you know cup wins happen and anj postacoglu pretty much you know led the charge on that one it wasn't really a reflection of the work being done at the club at all yeah they've guided us close to relegation we might actually we might actually get relegated from the premier league this season i hate having to keep talking about that but that might happen And even if we don't, this has been two disastrous domestic seasons.

23:53Jack:It's been two seasons fraught with chaotic recruitment, too many sort of negative headlines that we just shouldn't be having. Stuff like the Ezzedil happening, stuff like the Morgan Gibbs-White stuff happening. And I know we've got kind of Maranakis, we've got Parrish, these sort of other antagonists involved in all of this. But the fact that this stuff keeps happening to Spurs is indicative of the fact that things just aren't happening properly at the club. Things aren't moving in the right direction. And I think to just bring in Pochettino and have us all be very happy about it and have us all be excited about him, continue his great work and everything like that, I just don't think would be right.

24:31Jack:And I know that sounds like cutting off your nose to spite your face, but I don't think anybody could convince me that they wouldn't then say, I don't think they would have backed Pochettino in the way that they are going to have to to Zerbi. And I imagine the way they would have promised they will to get him in. They would have said to Pochettino, you've got Gray here, you've got a doggy, you've got Bergvau, these sort of young players. You did it before, do it again. And we'd have probably another season or another couple of seasons of them not properly investing and again just coasting on the goodwill that bringing Pochettino back would have...

25:07Jack:I mean, look, this is all the straw, man. This is all just me inventing this, but that was my feeling on it. I don't mind... If the position is, we're not sure Pochettino is right, going back to the manager that you've had before previously? Should you ever go back second time is generally not as good as the first? Are you sort of, you're not confronting the main issues at the football club? Like you said, it's a sticking plaster. If those were the reasons for not bringing him back, then I can kind of understand it. But what we're hearing is that isn't the reason why he wasn't brought back. And it is about them just not wanting someone who was so closely aligned with Daniel Levy.

25:43And that, for me, is a bigger issue. But it's done now. You know, that dream of waiting until the end of the season and using the interim manager to keep us up and then having our choice of managers is done and we had to go to Deserby. By Langer's comments, it was always Deserby. It was 100 % our number one choice, which then, again, just throws back to a wider issue here about a lack of culture in a football club. Because Langer is the man who's supposed to be creating this, this idea about this is the type of club we're at. and I've said this so many times but when he was interviewed by Dan Kilpatrick he said in no uncertain terms that we are building something here where the head coach is a part of it but not the be all and end all so if it isn't Postacoglu it's someone else who comes in but you look at the appointments and it's just nonsense it's just either he doesn't believe it or he's lying or he just doesn't have any power so it's like you've gone from Frank sorry you've gone from before this is Langer to be fair this is a wider symptomatic of the football club in fact if you can go all the way back to Martin Yol, Wande Ramos, different styles.

26:48Harry Redknapp, completely different. Phyllis Boas, completely different. Tino, great period of time, five years. Then we go to Mourinho, to Santo. The only consistency really there is this, is this bit, this bit of, this run here. Mourinho, Nuno Espirito, Santo and Conte. And then we pivot to Posta Gogli. Then we pivot to Thomas Frank and now we've pivoted to De Zerbe. So we're just pissing in the wind basically and hoping things might work. I've got a good feeling about this.

27:12Jack:Club needs to get sold ultimately. That's like, my bottom line on it now is I'm not, I'm not sat here thinking Enoch are going to be the ones to, to lead us to anything. If it happens by chance, great. But you know, I just, I've had enough of them. Like you say, you've got a good feeling. Am I just fickle gal? Or were you also a little bit, a little bit encouraged by the training video they put out the other day? We all were. What a training video. What a training video. Do you know what I mean? You'll never see that. I don't know. Yeah, I think it's propaganda, right? We know what it is, but that's fine because we want to feel good.

27:50It looked like he didn't, you know, the key point is something you mentioned at the start of the show is that if they were in any way dismissive or disrespectful of Frank, they're not going to be to Deserby. He won't stand it. You'll be gone. You'll be gone so quickly. Like the, I can't remember his name.

28:09Jack:Do you think he'd even, you know, like if we're talking about Evander Venn, somebody that there's been rumors around a questionable character there but equally an incredibly incredibly incredibly important part of the team

28:26Jack:do you uh do you think he do you think he'd been him yeah i think you bid anybody like which uh who was the the bloke you've seen the footage of him um chucking someone off he goes you took four touches. Call your agent, you're taking four touches. I told you to take two, call your agent. I mean, it's mental. It is mental, but it was a persistent problem that had been spoken about with the player and the management and the coaching staff over and over and over again, and he just couldn't or wouldn't do it. So what you saw wasn't an isolated incident. It was a series of incidents, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back, if you're being kind to the Zerbi.

29:02If you're being kind to the player, you shouldn't be just sent away from the football club for a mistake in training. so if he's willing to do that and bearing in mind he came in for like 10 million pound which isn't that isn't it's not a small amount of money for to be spent in by marseille um he might be 13 um anyway so like yeah i don't think any i don't think in this instance no player is greater than deserve his ideas and in effect if he is our manager no great the player is greater than tottenham and they'll know that um whether it works or not is another question but there will

29:34Jack:be a line of respect that hasn't been there i don't think i liked hearing like do you hear him one bit he i think he did he literally shouted like andiamo andiamo at them and so you know it's just like come on come on yes i like yeah you know i do like that a bit a bit yeah i like the fact he was in the middle of the training session he's in the middle of it he was playing with them he was well he had his arm around bergval a lot didn't he that's one thing they've clearly like focused on as well the cameras have really picked that bit up yeah i mean i the people i've spoken to in terms of the kind of players that will fit in the system it is the bear of bells there's it's the it's the archie grays it's he thinks perhaps are would probably do a good job for him um it's not paulina might not be conor gallagher uh so we'll see but i'm sure i'm sure we're going to see a lot from archie gray and lucas in the remaining seven games in a season i think if we get him back Kudus is the guy isn't it I've seen several people say it is he I mean you know that Brighton tried to buy him I don't know if it was from his perspective or just Brighton's model from Ajax they tried to get him before West Ham got him yeah I mean he's we never I don't know I never felt like Thomas Frank was using Kudus particularly effectively when he had him it kind of worked him to death didn't he just play it into him hold up take all of the strain the attacking strain the probably much more creative way to get to get who is you know in effect the best dribbler in the league do you know he's still fourth most dribbles he hasn't played for four months he's the fourth most dribbles in the premier league i mean that's meant to it there yeah that's um alistair gold has basically i can't find the exact quote but he basically said that loads of the players went back with a glowing review of that training session um they all seem to be very impressed of him so I guess the question is, Gal, obviously there's a lot of questions about does Erbi ball?

31:30Jack:Can he implement it with these players? Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. But ultimately, look, I think we do have a fairly talented group of players here. I think they've demonstrated that when they want to. Games like the Atletico Madrid game, for example. Do you think this is what they've needed? Do you think they've needed that manager that they actually believe in, that they actually buy into? because look to throw back to that thomas frank conversation a little bit it felt like there were a number of different articles and a number of different bits of hearsay that came out the back of the thomas frank era that indicated within days within days a lot of people at the club were thinking oh my god what have we done when thomas frank had come into the building um there was a genuine feeling that he was an enormous mistake for off the bat um whereas i don't know like you say you don't get the same feeling um on in this instance um and i think i think in in another way because i don't want to completely skirt around the sort of the the other stuff with roberta deservey i will sort of put my head above the parapet and say that i did i know the way in which the apology and everything was worded wasn't to everybody's taste but i do think overall it was a good thing of both him and the club to address the issue i i like i i i i think it was a good i'm not look i'm not telling anybody they should be happy with it or whatever i'm simply saying i i think it was i think it was a pretty bold move of of the club ultimately to drive that and to to listen to the concerns of supporters yeah and and talk to him about it i think um just i just answer your first question in terms of like the zerby ball we won't necessarily be seeing that immediately right we might see it in the championship or we might if we say up see it at the start of next year but don't don't say that off a bit just we'll see it next year there you go yes i mean look he regardless i know we we want to see it in the premier league right deserve being the championship with half this squad is going to fucking be a ridiculous amount like it will be we will yeah i don't think we'll have any issues anyway let's fingers crossed he keeps us up because um it isn't about seeing deserve you ball it's about him them respecting him and running at that extra 10 % for him and you know giving players a bit of more freedom and perhaps playing them in their correct positions or whatever it might be and so yeah it's that new manager bounce you're looking for and new manager bounce isn't just this magical thing that happens when anyone comes in it's about the manager's ideas and messaging being completely different to what they've been used to under the previous two managers in Spurs case so I think we'll see, fingers crossed, an immediate impact from him.

34:14I'm not saying we're going to go and win four of the last seven, but I think the game against Sundland will be a lot more competitive than we've perhaps been used to with Tottenham in recent era. In terms of Mason Greenwood's stuff, I mean, I think they could have just ignored it and let it die down and a couple of wins would have meant the subject matter disappears. But they chose not to. It would have been difficult for them not to. I think they did the right thing by, you know, addressing it. it was a massive issue even when it was in France it's become a bigger issue now that it's it's with Spurs and people that are that you know that didn't like the fact that De Zerbi had become a manager probably had problems with the statement of people that were in the fence it probably helped them go the other way um how do I feel I think I've said this in a few places and I'll just regurgitate it really is that in an ideal world that wouldn't have happened in an ideal world um you go for a manager that doesn't prioritize you know the betterment of the football club over the impact of what someone has done to another human being I can't ever unhear that tape and I'm not even I I think it's a horrendous thing obviously and obviously sometimes you build up on it and and it becomes a bigger issue because everyone's piling on to that issue it was grotesque what I And if that was my daughter, I would want to kill him.

35:34And I have a daughter who is 18, right? So I'm acutely sensitive to these things. So, yeah, I mean, it was always going to be contentious. But as always, fans are passive. If you have that big of an issue with it, then it's the sacrifice you have to make in not watching the football that he plays at Tottenham. But I can't do that. I'm always going to watch Spurs. Of course. You could have Pol Pot managing Tottenham. I'd probably still watch it.

36:01Jack:He's always your go-to, isn't he?

36:06I mean, he's kind of long enough into the past where a lot of people don't really know the horrendous crimes that this man committed. And Pol Pot is a funny name.

36:16Jack:It's the alliteration, isn't it? Yeah. You know, a bit Brian Bedonde. You remember back in the early days of the fighting cock, when someone dominated the midfield, we'd say Idi Amin, the midfield. There were a lot of things said back then that should probably stay back then. Better left. That's a good one though, is it? He absolutely pinocheted the midfield. Pinocheted. Maggie Thatcher. Maggie Thatcher on strings. Wait, no, hang on. She was pals with him, wasn't she? Probably. The other way. I think they were good friends. Did she give him? I don't know, whatever. We don't need to talk about this one.

36:54Jack:Obviously, there is, you know, it's a big job to do. it's you know five straight premier league defeats ahead of the atletico madrid game yeah you know and and defeats after that one i guess one of the big one of the one of the sort of the main talking points coming into the sunderland game will be that antonin kinski is going to be back in goal vicario is out obviously with his with his hernia operation I know Julian Lorenz on your pod said that we don't have any goalkeepers who are good with their feet and I was like it was one of those I was like actually actually Kinski he didn't show it in Madrid but he is good with his feet I did think that when he said that I was like I should maybe push back here but it's hard though isn't it come on it's hard because it's not important that he's got it wrong what's important is what he is saying about the kind of goalkeeper you need but I understood I knew people that it would wind them up I wasn't trying to do it.

37:53Jack:I wasn't trying to, like, I was just... I was acutely aware of it anyway. But you have sort of now opened a wound. I know. I thought I might have done that. I did know I was doing that, really, didn't I? But Kinski probably could play the Zerby ball probably better than Vicario. Well, this is it. Is this potentially his redemption arc? Because everyone was very excited when we signed Kinski. You know, he came with a big reputation. And I don't think in any way, shape or form, he has lived up to that, barring what his debut against Liverpool, was it? where he looked very, very good. Yeah, it was great.

38:24Jack:But, you know, I mean, the Madrid game was just a, you know, it was an overall calamity and it was a mix of the occasion, the pitch itself and whatever, a young goalkeeper who doesn't have that much experience in that sort of occasion anyway as it is. But it's maybe the bad thing, fingers crossed, is out the way. And from that point, the only way is up. and working with a manager who might breathe some sort of fresh belief into him, play to his strengths a bit, we could start to see some of that, you know, what was he, about 30 mil, didn't he cost? Quite hefty choice. Kinski, didn't he? Cost a fair bit.

39:0512 million, something like that. All right, there we go. It's close. We're that close, isn't it? You know you've got a responsibility when you say things into microphone. I don't. I don't. It's fun. I know. I don't know if... I don't know. So, I mean, I'd be slightly worried if he started, yeah, to be honest. He is going to start, but, you know, perhaps he threw the ball in the net against Arsenal, didn't he, as well? 12.5 mil. Yeah, yeah, there you go. Wasn't 30 mil. So, but he's got to play and he's, you know, the one thing he can do is play football with his feet. And so, I don't actually think we'll see much of that, actually, in this season anyway.

39:43I don't think De Zervi's going to come in and do anything drastic. I think he's going to just, it's not like, it ain't like Ange Postogoglu going yep no you're going to see it right away you're going to see it on Wednesday you're going to see what I'm doing I think it's almost like he's this isn't pre-season to get something right this is get points by any means necessary you know we're not the most unhappiest fan base in the league anymore we have been all season oh really polls oh yeah Chelsea Chelsea are the unhappiest fan base oh crap

40:12Jack:it's a good thing isn't it Champions League in when was it like 2021 2020 it's a good thing that they are unhappy You're unhappy about that. Yeah, but it's not really unhappy. It's not true unhappiness, is it? It's just, oh, we're not going to win the league again. Would you have Liam Rossini at Spurs? No, no, no, no. That's so strange. Such a strange man. No, yeah, I'm not feeling that one. It's another sort of Thomas Franke thing. I love all the, I've got to say, it's one of my basic, and maybe I'm just happier to admit this stuff now I'm older and I don't care as much. I love all those Will from the Inbetweeners memes that people do with Resenia.

40:49Jack:I think it's very good and it's very, very fitting. Sunderland, mate. Yeah. Janet Xhaka, is he back for them or is he out? Of course he is. You can already see it, can't you? Bastard. Because he hates us. Even though they booed him every single week. Even though there's like a, do you know what I mean? There's an interview. I think he did the Players' Tribune interview when he was at Arsenal. Remember how they used to boo him? Yeah. And he said, you know, he was getting messages saying, I hope your kids die and stuff. And yet, he still plays out his skin against us because I want to do a North London is Red post or whatever on Instagram after the game.

41:25Jack:They all do that, you know? Yeah, they do. And it just shows you what a massive football club. And that is extra motivation by anyone who plays us to be part of the reason why Tottenham are in this situation, for sure. But yeah, I mean, I can't really tell you much about Sunderland. that, you know, I can't tell you anything that people don't know already. They've got hard work in midfield. Xhaka's a part of it. Sidiqa just covers every blade of grass. But they haven't, you know, they're not doing brilliantly at the moment. They're shit. I don't care. It's Sunderland with Tottenham Hotspur. I've seen his win up there with a Gary, was it Gary Doherty hat-trick, wasn't it?

42:04It rings a bell, actually.

42:06Jack:Ginger Pele. I'm pretty sure Gary Doherty got a hat-trick up there. We beat Sunderland. And I know they had that Michael Chopra season, but still, they're crap. we're Tottenham Hotspur you know it means something it means something we've got to beat these teams come on well you look at you look at a line-up you know like you've got Kinski you've got Porro Van der Ven Romero a doggy he's definitely going to use Gray and probably Saru in midfield but maybe Barofel and then you've got Simmonds Kudus is back we've got Tell who's I think done brilliantly since Frank's gone and a front two Solanke and Richarlison.

42:43Surely you get something with that.

42:45Jack:Surely. Do you remember Arsenal's All or Nothing? Do you remember when they got the... Did you see the clip of when they got the club photographer in to do the team talk? And he was all like, I love this club. I love you lot. Go out there and do it. Honestly, and I mean this honest, think about this genuinely, right? You get an email in the inbox, Roberto De Zerbe, you know how Arteta's a bit weird, right? If De Zerbe's a bit weird and he's looked through and he's like, okay, this guy Flav, you know, he does a lot of talking for Tottenham. A lot of fans like, you know, Fighting Cock's big pod.

43:18Jack:He goes on Sky. He does all this. Like, he's obviously popular with the fans. I'm going to get, I'm going to ask him to come in and do a team talk. Would you do it? Not in a million years. You wouldn't do it? What would I possibly, no way. I would pay so much money to see the video. because the club would put that out as well like who's this kind of thinking he can motivate the players who's this 44 year old man slightly rotund man going tell him van derven what he should he should be doing van derven like looking to i don't know do you know what i mean yeah looking at each other like no absolutely not i don't and then it's not because like there are people like i would die for that opportunity i wouldn't do a good job i'd do a terrible job That would be more fun for us.

44:07Jack:Yeah, of course. No, no, I fully appreciate that. I mean, Ricky would absolutely be over the moon for something like that. He'd be clipping it up and putting it on Finecock's channel. Did you see that horrendous photo he put up of me and him on Instagram? He's looked at that and gone, yeah, the world needs to see that. Fucking, we look like a ripe pair of burbots, honestly. He loves doing it, doesn't he? Yeah, but I don't understand, right, how Ricky looks at these pictures and go, yeah, we look great. let's get let's send this out like he's got so much confidence about we look awful we look like two little creeps i would say like you know we should be on the in between us that's what we look like i have a certain connection with ricky and i think that he won't mind me saying that like we are like emotions first people and i think ricky really mate i think ricky has seen that and said that's a happy memory that's me and my pal having a good time and i want to put that out there to cherish that memory and you you are wiping your ass with that constantly you've done it on lads and on now you're doing it on here he's he said he's posted it oh yeah Seville and I've just posted in the comments we look like a pair of cunts that's my only contribution to that so you wouldn't do the team talk no I absolutely would not do the team talk no can I can I just look we've spoken about football and everything now do you do easter eggs or do you think people need to grow up no no no i don't think people need to grow up it's up to them i don't i don't have any issues with people why do you ask that because i just sort of thought i was going to do an easter bit at the top and i thought that's a bit twee so i'll save it for the end when we've exhausted talking about tottenham and deserby and all that type of thing because i just sort of thought like this year we didn't like me and my family we didn't really buy each other easter eggs what did what about not for the missus yeah yeah i got one but but like me and my like you know my sisters and all that sort of thing nobody got each other easter eggs for like the first time because there's kids and stuff on the scene now so the kids get sort of little toys and presents whatever and and i just sort of thought i don't really miss it i don't i don't have a massive sweet tooth anyway no same but the sort of the the the easter industrial complex that has been built up now you know you're seeing especially like all these sort of have you seen the other thing that's been built out around easter and lent and stuff now there's loads of like the right wing accounts that aren't christian but are hunting down all the different football clubs and all this type of stuff saying why didn't you put a cross on the easter post why you know yeah yeah all that type of stuff there's a bloke in wiltshire that drives around still painting roundabouts he's still still doing it and they last about 24 hours now i in the wheelchair where i live it's like i reckon they would have been into it i'm into it i wasn't but when i got here Are you the bloke?

46:51I cannot confirm nor deny whether I am the bloke. No, he's like 70 years old and he just drives around in a little white van and brings out a red paint in these fucking roundabouts and they last two minutes. Yeah, I mean, it's just miserable, isn't it? It's just like these groups that weaponise what should be lovely experiences and times that people can enjoy. I honestly am the least religious man on earth. But I don't mind, you know, I wouldn't try and fucking politicize the Easter holidays.

47:24Jack:Christmas carols. I like the, you know, the pomp of it all. Ding dong, merrily on heart. Yeah, same quality. Religion is good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think so. And just quickly, actually, isn't it well funny about how much the football world hates Arsenal? I forgot. They lost in the FA Cup, didn't they? I did a throwaway tweet about them saying, you know, because what really winds them up is what I found actually in the last week is saying they let the country down because they pull all their players out of the respective. So they hate it. They're like, no, no, we didn't. We didn't. It's just like, you did.

48:03You did. Just own it. Just own it. That's what we did. Yeah, fuck England. Fuck the internationals. We were going for the league. But they can't own it. They have to go, no, that's not what happened. And what actually happened, actually, is there were minor injuries on every single one of their players. So it wasn't in the best interest to play them. That's the energy you get back. You're like, fuck you, you're getting it then. If that's your energy, they're getting it. And it was like 11 ,000 times saying you let your country down only to lose to Southampton. And that wasn't just Spurs fans. That was football as a community unifying around their hatred of Arsenal.

48:37Do you see Gabriel Jesus who said, I don't understand, but everyone hates us. everyone hates Arsenal because they don't understand it it's well funny and they're all banging on about the quadruple and someone said who said that no one talked about the quadruple and now there's tons of videos of these wankers being interviewed on AFTV talking about the quadruple brilliant

48:56Jack:do you reckon they can fuck the lot from there yeah I mean I think they've probably won the Premier League if I'm honest I think they've probably done it I feel like that's too far ahead now however if they lose to Manchester City then they're three points ahead. The pressure is massively on them. So I think you're right, Jack. I think we have to concede from this position if they bottle the league, it will be the greatest thing ever. It would be bigger than Bilbao for me if they bottle the league from here. As long as they don't do the Champions League. For me, that's the hellish scenario if they ever get their hands on that.

49:33The thing is that they're talking about like they're going to win it. We'll just do the double then. That's what you said. We'll just do the double then. that's right we'll do the Champions League and you're like like Barcelona are still not there it's like like Bayern Munich there are teams there that are infinitely better than Southampton I think teams

49:51Jack:are a bit like they just know how to operate in the business end of this competition as well do you know what I mean like I just sort of think Arsenal's Stokeball isn't I don't know I think if Arsenal don't win a trophy from this point it will be the greatest most catastrophic bottling of any competition in the history of the game and I don't care if that's not true. That is 100 % the narrative I'm going to go down and I'm not going to take my foot off their throat until the first kick of August if they fuck this up. It would be quite magnificent, wouldn't it, in the year that Spurs get relegated that they actually kind of take the spotlight off of us by bottling all four trophies that they looked like they were going to win, you know.

50:32Jack:It would almost take the hurt off of Spurs going down a little bit, a tiny bit, you know. I mean if you say would you would you accept Spurs getting relegated if Arsenal bottled the lot it's a conversation for sure I guess if the flip side is Spurs stay up and they win the Premier League and the Champions League you know I mean if someone said to me you've got to get relegated but Arsenal if Arsenal stay if Tottenham stay up they win all of the competitions all four I'd go send us to hell send us to Conference National send us to hell send us anywhere you want so yeah I'm very grateful this week Gal, thank you very much for joining us mate, what have you got coming out on Fycoc, the lab, everything Fycoc's just the usual stuff, the lab we've got you'll like this why Spurs won't go bankrupt if we go down there's a lot of chat about you know Spurs potentially club folding or all this sort of stuff or capitulating administration that sort of stuff and it's all nonsense so we talk about the safeguarding and how that works in football clubs so that's going to come at some point this week we're going to do a breakdown about how De Zerbi plays football what De Zerbi ball is on the lab as well but most of all if you could follow me on Instagram that'd be great Flav underscore Bateman because I can monetize that if I'm being honest thanks

Jack is joined by podcast royalty, Flav from The Fighting Cock, to process the goings on at Tottenham Hotspur over our extended break from the pitch. With Roberto De Zerbi officially through the door, the pair discuss whether the glowing reports from the training ground have genuinely changed our initial opinions of the volatile Italian. We explore the shifting power dynamic in the dressing room, arguing that while this squad infamously tuned on Thomas Frank, they simply will not be able to get away with ignoring De Zerbi's intense, demanding presence.

The conversation then tackles the massive goalkeeper dilemma looming over the crucial trip to Sunderland. With Vicario out injured, we dive deep into the Antonin Kinsky debate. The pair ask if his disastrous Champions League debut can be quickly forgotten, and if his natural ability with the ball at his feet could kickstart a redemption arc under a manager who demands extreme bravery from his keepers.

Finally, we wrap things up on a lighter, more desperate note as Jack puts Flav on the spot, asking exactly what he would say if he was suddenly tasked with delivering the ultimate, backs-against-the-wall Tottenham team talk ahead of this weekend's relegation six-pointer.
