Key claims
- Messi’s World Cup scoring and “GOAT” status are cemented by record-breaking totals; his penalty miss is framed as likely due to his usual poor penalty record.
- Cape Verde are the tournament’s biggest story so far, playing confident, incisive football and looking capable of advancing.
- France vs Iraq was disrupted by a two-hour rain delay; Mbappé’s finishing and Michael Olise’s impact are highlighted.
Notable examples
- Spain 1st match vs Saudi Arabia: Yamal’s goal; Danny Olmo’s playmaking.
- Uruguay vs Cape Verde: Cape Verde “go toe-to-toe,” with sumptuous football.
- Argentina vs Austria: Messi’s two goals, including a deflection-assisted touch and rebound finish; Austria’s Kevin Danso praised.
- France vs Iraq: two-hour rain delay; Mbappé scores twice.
- Norway vs Senegal: Haaland vs Senegal; Norway and France both advance; Norway’s defense questioned.
- Egypt vs New Zealand: Egypt wins 3-1; Mo Salah scores.

2:07hello everybody welcome back to the rule the roost world cup digest good bloody god it is hot i think i need a bloody drinks break mate i'll tell you now oh topical topical yes the world cup digest rule the roost where i dissect all of the world cup's biggest and most important games and talking points in a strict strict 15 minute time limit i'm just going to set my uh clock now and uh we can get it going but yeah just just at the top remember you can get all episodes of the world cup digest as well as rule the roost proper ad free on Patreon, patreon.com slash RTR pod just had a great podcast with Aidan Jones Aussie Spurs fan, shouts with his piano I'm really underselling what it is that he does but yeah you may have seen his now infamous video of finding out that Spurs had stayed up whilst he was on stage performing it's really really good anyway, let's crack on with the World Cup Digest 15 minutes on the clock here we go so um first game if i've lost my notes i'm losing time already spain versus saudi arabia spain starts kicking to gear um biggest sort of observation here like yamal great great goal with a player like him you know they can beat anybody really um however danny olmo such a difference maker such a difference maker wonderful player I always had him down as like a bit of a lump striker in in my head that's where I always thought he was um he seems to be more of a I don't know number 10 type player probably gonna get you know shouted out for having the wrong technical profile of him but that's what he seemed that's what he looks like at times wonderful passer with spraying balls all over the shop did he play in their first game I'm not so sure I don't really know what was going on maybe coach just thought Cape Verde so they don't need to bother um but yeah they took they took this one seriously got the three points looks like they are all but home and dry but not yet confirmed Belgium versus Iran um a draw Belgium continue to underwhelm shout out to Iran I mean like these sort of conversations it's always turned into like the big team not doing very well which is you know to varying degrees often true let's be real but also probably doesn't give enough credit to the underdogs at the best of times fair play to iran well done got a point against a still decent belgium side even if they are not really showing that um belgium may well sneak through the group just about but i don't think it's a stretch to say they will not be a real issue for any of the big sides um you know who knows maybe there will be maybe there will be but uh yeah you know some got sent off didn't they as well but i can't quite remember who it is now um my notes should be more thorough but they're not they're generally just vibes lots of emotional big top line things i write down that was good this bit was nice um that's what you come here for isn't it that's what you come here for uruguay versus cabo verde so cape verde easily the story of the world cup so far right gone toe-to-toe with spain and with uruguay two points from two pretty tough games that i think people wouldn't have given them any points for not only they're not like scraping it they're not shithousing their way to these points either they are playing some sumptuous football absolutely sumptuous football at times knocking the ball about nicely playing without fear you know thomas frank learn a lesson yeah we haven't we've been treated to thomas frank on our television screens again explaining exactly what teams should be doing.
6:28Take a leaf out of Cape Verde's book. Play without fear. Play with some, I'm not going to say reckless abandon because that makes it seem like what they're doing isn't well coached or is without any point. But what they are doing is playing incisive football, some really, really nice football. Players who are playing with confidence, who don't look like they're just happy to be there. They are there to compete. and, you know, competing they are. They may well now at this point. We're looking at them potentially getting through to the next round. I mean, this could well be one of those things where they get a draw against Spain, they get a draw against Uruguay, and then they lose to Saudi Arabia.
7:15You know, that's just how football is sometimes, isn't it? But for now, what a story. It's wonderful. And again, one of those teams at the very top of the competition as well would have been lumped in with why? Why are teams like this in the World Cup? You know, from more of the throwaway, generally, you know, unpleasant hot take merchants that you see in the football media. Why are teams like Cape Verde in the World Cup? What's going on here? And, you know, this is why. this is this is like people are losing sight of this people are losing sight of what makes football what makes the world cup what makes things like the fa cup so great is these stories that can that can come out of nowhere right um that's what we want yeah i know more often than not these games are just misery fests for the for the smaller teams they get done four five nil or something like that but you know every now and again you get these stories that that are picked up and if they get if they get out of the group stages especially looking at their group right they are going to be immortalized and rightly so um great story keep it going cape verde i think pretty much the entire world is behind you other than probably saudi arabia in the next game who whatever happens will revert back to supporting you if you continue in the competition as well i think every single nation is united behind cape verde um great story really really wonderful stuff uh new zealand versus egypt egypt show up um 3-1 they got a result that was probably at least you know a win you should think should be expected of them um seasoned african cup of nations winners some very very talented players in there um even if there is like an aging Mo Salah you know roll back the years got a goal um yeah you know they should be winning that New Zealand made them work for it New Zealand as well you know they're not just sort of one of those teams that look like they're there to just be counted they look like they're a team that's there to try their best to compete and you know it's funny when you see players like Chris Wood for example who you know is probably considered a bit of a lump of a forward if we're to be honest in Premier League terms.
9:41Still very effective, still very good at what he does. But my point is I think most teams in the top half of the table would be not that enthusiastic if their team spent 20, 30 mil on somebody like Chris Wood. Shades of like Ricky Lambert going to Liverpool type thing. But when you see him in this setting, when you see him in the World Cup, you do realise he is still a very good player. To cut it in the Premier League, you have to be an exceptional player. That's not Little England in or anything like that. It is what it is. It's what the Premier League is like. It's a supremely competitive and talented league.
10:20So it stands to reason that players like Chris Wood, who have very good Premier League careers, would look very good on the world stage as well. I'm talking an awful lot about Chris Wood, who didn't even score in this game or anything. But it's just an observation I had. He is like, you know, if you're playing as New Zealand on FIFA or something, He's the star player. He's the one you get the ball to, right? But yeah, Egypt's winning. I don't, does that? No, they haven't gone through yet. So that's not Egypt through yet. Let's put another shrimp on the barbie. let's not um messi he that's a real reference to the kids there messi becomes the world cup leading scorer two great finishes surely there has solidified himself as the goat if it was ever in doubt but is he not the goat pelle yes you may have won three world cups but still come on um Guinness World Records actually tweeted out all of the records that Messi has broken in this World Cup alone.
13:29They're accumulative records. It's not like they're not like exceptional records he's broken in this World Cup of this World Cup's own merit. It's accumulative over the course of his whole career. That doesn't take away from it. I'm just trying to give you some clarity. But yeah, penalty up top, which would have given him the records. he missed it the sort of joke has been that he missed this on purpose um didn't want to break the record with a penalty he the funny thing is the one human thing about Lionel Messi is he's generally appalling at penalties don't know what it is it's mental but he's not very good at them this was no exception terrible terrible penalty it looked so bad it looked like yes he probably was missing on purpose I think it's just that he's quite bad at penalties can't explain it don't know why he just is um his goals however were brilliant what is taking most of the uh the attention the admiration right now is his touch for the second goal in the lead up to it so i'm not sure if it's rodrigo de paul or whoever it was that got crossed the ball into to Messi, takes a deflection off one of the Austrian defenders, and Messi still manages to, just in a split second, contorts his foot into this weird position, brings the ball down with a beautiful touch, controls it, has a shot, doesn't get on the end of it, but, and this is like close to the end of the game, this is nearly 90 minutes, 39 year player all right still though alert to it jumps on the jumps on the rebound gets there smacks it into the back of the net two goals argentina through to the next round um
15:26austria did were hard work for them i think big kevin danso was particularly good i think he was particularly good in that game, which should be a sign of much joy for Tottenham fans. There's going to be some real competition there next year if it's to be believed that Christian Romero has signalled a desire actually to stay at Spurs, such as how impressed he is with Roberto De Zerbi.
15:56Let's stick with the World Cup. Argentina through to the knockouts. It's hard to know with them. I think they're very solid. I've seen them compared to Atletico Madrid with Messi. I don't agree with that at all. I don't think they're as dark artsy or as negative as Simeone's Atletico Madrid are, to be honest with you. I think they're a compact, well-drilled, technically sound bastard team. With, yes, Lionel Messi, who even at his grand old age seems to be utterly exceptional. um really really terrifyingly so it's it's it's really quite mad um i'm in training for a 10k at the moment don't ask um at 41 years old and i'm watching a guy and i know it's it's battering me right it's battering me um and i look at a guy who's a couple years younger than me who is still playing top level elite football it is just it's it is wild it's wild um he's an alien what can i say france versus iraq i mean obviously the game that is mostly marked by a two hour rain delay in the middle of the game um really quite mental yeah mental sort of like storm season you see in in parts of america um lots of videos of how quickly the pitch is draining everything which is very very impressive but obviously completely destroyed the whole sort of flow of the game makes it less of a spectacle really makes it sort of silly um france beat iraq 3-0 maybe it would have been more if you know the game hadn't been delayed in that way but it you know It's not a proper competition.
17:54It's a bit silly, isn't it? I don't really know what the alternative in that position is, but it's just unfortunate, isn't it? Mbappe keeps goals coming. Two goals for Mbappe. What a player. The first goal is unbelievable. The lack of backlift on his shot is just phenomenal. I know he's been good at Madrid, but I don't think he's been like super superstar at Madrid correct me if I'm wrong but for France he is still just the guy isn't he like just an unbelievable player really really great feels like a player from another era as well still I often make that comparison to R9 with him but yeah wonderful and Michael Alise as well lest we forget just phenomenal it's phenomenal to see a lad go from palace widely considered like an exceptional player a brilliant premier league player to go on and literally become one of the best players in the world and i i do think he is i think right now you're looking at probably top 10 if i'm if you know we're talking in an arbitrary sense don't ask me to name the actual top 10 but in a throw arbitrary sense top 10 player in the world kind of category right for Michael Alise um unbelievable unbelievable footballer some talk that Madrid want to buy him look if you're buying Munich you're not selling him for less than 150 200 mil right now are you I mean why would you get rid of him why would you want to lose him for anything less um well a few seconds to go Norway versus Senegal Haaland with two Senegal a great side um I think it was three two in the end they cut through Norway to be honest they cut through Norway it's going to be really really interesting see it's going to be Haaland versus Mbappe in a few days time Norway versus France Norway look like a very good side they look like they could be a bit of a dark horse obviously with the attack that they've got they're going to be a problem for anybody however they look like they are susceptible at the back and it's going to be interesting to see how they cope with France it's going to be a good dress rehearsal for them for the uh for the knockout rounds both france and norway are through to the knockouts um so yeah you know the final game of the group stage is going to be about who finishes top of the group it's going to be it's just it's going to be interesting to see what norway do in that game um and then last game jordan versus algeria well done algeria 3-1 winners jordan exit the competition um so right now just just as a recap on the qualified teams we have mexico usa germany who have been joined by argentina france and norway in the knockouts teams eliminated thus far confirmed haiti tunisia turkey jordan thank you very much for tuning in everybody that's the 15 minutes up um if you are enjoying the world cup digest please leave comments please like please share or that type of thing please feel free to share it with non-spurs fans yeah there's always a little bit of a spurs leaning in there but i try to keep it just completely rivalry aside clap clap clap on the football um that's playing out right now in the world cup lovely jubbly as i said at the top patreon.com slash rtr pod where you can get every single pod ad free extra pods all that type of stuff for the Spurs fans and yeah that's it England tonight wa la la bucket of interlute see you later

From the publisher
On today's 15-minute briefing:
Spain Kick Into Gear: Spain are finally looking the part against Saudi Arabia. Dani Olmo is just such a wonderful player, and with Lamine Yamal in the side, they can probably pose a massive problem to absolutely anyone.
Belgium Underwhelm: Belgium underwhelm yet again, but I have to give a massive shout out to Iran, who dug deep to pick up a huge point.
The Story of the Tournament: Are Cape Verde the story of the World Cup? Going toe-to-toe with Spain and now Uruguay—it is incredible to watch.
Egypt Get the Job Done: Egypt show up and get a result against New Zealand that was probably expected of them, but you have to give credit to NZ, who made them work incredibly hard for it.
Messi Makes History: Lionel Messi becomes the outright World Cup leading scorer with two great finishes against Austria, surely solidifying himself as the GOAT. He did miss a penalty though, which makes me wonder: did he miss it on purpose because he didn't want to break the record with a pen? Either way, Argentina are safely through to the next round.
France Battle the Elements: Despite a chaotic two-hour rain delay against Iraq, Kylian Mbappe just keeps the goals coming. But once again, Michael Olise is looking like one of the best players in the world right now. France also book their spot in the next round.
Haaland vs Mbappe Awaits: Erling Haaland bags two against Senegal, who are genuinely a good side and managed to cut right through Norway's defence. That vulnerability is going to be fascinating to watch in their upcoming clash with France—it is officially Haaland vs Mbappe.
Jordan Say Goodbye: Finally, Jordan officially exit the competition after their result against Algeria.
