In short
This World Cup Digest episode reviews recent group-stage matches and offers hot takes on standout performances and tournament implications. Key topics: Ronaldo’s Portugal 5-0 win over Azerbaijan (Ronaldo “answers the critics” and the host argues he’s not GOAT-level); England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana (England should beat Ghana; criticism of VAR and winger reliance); Colombia vs DR Congo (many long shots, three disallowed goals, one tap-in goal; Colombia advances); Switzerland 2-1 Canada (both advance); Bosnia-Herzegovina vs Qatar (Alubegovic scores a screamer; Bosnia advances); Morocco vs Haiti (Haiti’s Isiador “goal of the tournament” but Morocco wins 4-2; Morocco a tough draw); Scotland 0-3 Brazil (Scotland out; host blames poor defending/out-from-the-back choices); South Africa 1-0 South Korea (biggest shock; first-ever Round of 32 appearance, finished second).
Notable examples
Chavez’s first international goal for Mexico vs Czechia; Edin Dzeko’s continued scoring.

2:11Hello everybody, welcome back to the Rule the Roost World Cup Digest, the podcast on which I give myself a strict 15 minute timer to talk about the World Cup's biggest games, events and talking points. I guess an event is a talking point, isn't it? But here we go. 15 minutes on the clock. I hope everyone's surviving alright in the heat, by the way. I know this kind of conversation is a bit trite and people get a bit wound up by English people talking about the weather, but it's really, really hot in the UK. And for anybody that wants to do the whole kind of, that's just like a normal Tuesday in Phoenix, Arizona or whatever, shut up.
2:58if you do want to listen to any episode of the world cup digest or rule the roost proper ad free you can go to patreon patreon.com slash rtr pod and on there you'll be treated to two different tiers there's the inner sanctum where you'll get extra pods and there's the supporter tier where if you do like what i do with rule the roost if you've enjoyed it across the season and please consider supporting the show i think it's about a pound pound 50 a month and that just helps cover the cost of running stuff and whatever you know i'm not going to the bahamas anytime soon so cough up all right 15 minutes here we go it's getting exciting as well the world cup so portugal five azbekistan nil not one for the hate watchers this one Ronaldo finally got his goals didn't he finally had to make it all about him he's just such a bizarre individual I am very much of the opinion that he is not he's never it's never been a competition between him and Lionel Messi he's an incredible goal scorer he's an incredible athlete but I think as like an all-round footballer it's just it's just no comparison because I also think that the idea that okay if it's Messi or Ronaldo you're talking about them being the top two in history but there's plenty of other players I would much rather have in my team than Cristiano Ronaldo I've spoken to Charlotte before about you know Messi everybody loves Messi and fantastic player I love Messi but I would say just in my lifetime with my own eyes and he didn't have the longevity and he didn't carry it on for long enough or whatever but the best player i've ever seen with my own eyes is ronaldinho i i would just say like when he was it depends how you want to quantify like what makes the best player and everything like that right i totally appreciate that but ronald if we're just talking about on their day right on their day the very peak of their powers ronaldinho is the first name on my team sheet there's plenty of other players as well mostly Brazilians to be fair but still Cristiano Ronaldo is not the greatest player of all time and he's definitely not the second greatest player of all time as far as I'm concerned but despite being a seemingly awful individual with allegations that he's paid off outside of court and everything like that.
5:41I just don't like him. I've never really liked what he's about. I don't really like his vibe. Maybe I'm partly Little England-ing it because Portugal in the Euros and the World Cup, I think, Winkgate and all that type of stuff. I'll give you one of my other hot takes. When he was at the very peak of his powers, I think Wayne Rooney was a better player than Ronaldo is. I said it. I said it. Wayne Rooney other than when Messi put us to the sword at Wembley, I reckon the best individual performance I've ever seen from an opposition player is Wayne Rooney at White Hart Lane. I think they beat us 3-0 and it was kind of peak of his powers Rooney and he just ran the show.
6:30He was absolutely unbelievable. But yeah, still 5-0 Portugal goal whatever you know fine um england nil ghana nil i spoke about this a lot on big john bass's pods the big john bass show check it out um have a listen kind of disappointing but also kind of as john has said and as my good friend charlie has said maybe maybe that's the sort of wake up call this group needs. I think there's also the point to be made, and Harry Kane wasn't the one making it the other day, that I don't think England have any right to show up and just put a team like Ghana to bed. If you want to win the World Cup, and if that's where your aspirations lie, then you would probably say you should be beating a team like Ghana.
7:25There should be a good test for you, but you should be beating them. But I don't really know if England... Ghana played the game brilliantly. They should have had a penalty. They should have won the... It's not to guarantee that they're going to score the penalty, but they should have had a penalty. Contes should have been sent off. I truly do not understand VAR at the best of times.
7:49But England, yeah, it was a frustrating game. It's a frustrating game when you're trying to play a game that relies so heavily upon your wingers. And you've got Gordon and Matuweke. I think you're going to be in trouble. I think Anthony Gordon is a good player. I do think he's a good player. He's the sort of player that I would quite like at Spurs. But he's also the sort of player that we would have at Spurs and I would think he's probably at the right sort of level. I think being at Newcastle, he was at his right kind of level. And look, he's gone to Barcelona for big money. Maybe he's going to kick on and become one of the best players on the face of the planet.
8:25I find that very hard to believe, if I'm brutally honest with you. but fair play to him. I just don't see that much there that suggests he's actually that good. Madaweke, I think, is a fine player. You know, I think he's okay. I think he is exactly what we all think he is. That, a good player. An understudy to Saka. I mean, a half-fit Saka coming on the pitch at the end of the game, again, really revealed he's levels above a player like Madaweke. As much as I will often say of Saka, I don't think he's ever been at the same level as a peak Bale or a peak Salah, as many Arsenal fans will try to claim that he is.
9:06I still think he's an exceptional player. There's no denying it, right?
9:12So I think we struggled to really create much to really bother Garner. I think they knew everything that was coming from Malewake and Gordon, to be honest. I don't think we got the ball to Bellingham enough who I think is just a truly wonderful player I love him see also Harry Kane although Harry Kane did he did sort of miss what I would say is for Harry Kane a sitter in front of goal it was awkward the ball bounced a bit awkwardly he had to sort of twist and contort himself to make connection but I've seen him score that 100 times for Spurs and I do get very protective over Harry people do like to throw him under the bus and really go for him like when he plays for England but what I would say is the Harry I've seen balling out for Spurs for Bayern Munich whenever I've watched them it's not often the same Harry that I see for England and we do have to bear in mind he is England's top goal scorer he's probably going to go on and be England's top World Cup goal scorer after this tournament as well so it's not that he's a bum for England but I think there's a habit of overthinking things when he plays for England because it's what he wants you know we know how much the national team means to him um we know it's he's on record saying it's like the most important thing it's the greatest honor of his life to be called up for England and to be England captain and all that type of thing right but I do think he overthinks I think he wants it a bit too much I think he he got into a place at Spurs where he was very comfortable um and he could just do the sort of things that he did that we saw week in week out because he just felt like a god amongst men there really um and he probably also does in the bundesliga with all due respect um but yeah i don't know at international level or whatever i think it just doesn't come quite as easily to him but it would be good if we got the ball to him every now and again you know um it would be good if we got the ball to bellingham quickly and more effectively i've got to stop going on about England it's not an England pod Declan Rice so it's partly to blame for that who you know I don't think is up to much if I'm brutally honest with you um so that's my sort of hot take to end that one on Panama Croatia Croatia did everything they needed to do three points on the board keeps their world cup dream alive fine you know whatever good luck to them I don't think they're going to go very far in this competition but you know they're still sort of clinging on on.

12:39I've been liberated. We're going to take this city back. Over Medicaid. In an all new season, now streaming only on Disney+. They're hunting us. It's time we started hunting them. I can work with them. This should be tons of fun. Marvel Television's Daredevil Born Again, now streaming only on Disney+. They say you can tell a lot about a person by the contents of their freezer. So what does a bottle of Jägermeister say? It says you have standards. You don't cut corners. And you like your Jägermeister shots the way they're meant to be enjoyed. Ice cold. As for the frozen taquitos and mystery leftovers, we'll keep that between us.
13:18Drink it cold or don't drink it at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume. Imported by Mass Jägermeister, U.S. White Plains, New York. Columbia versus Democratic Republic of Congo. So, Colombia, like, if you watch the highlights of this, I don't know if you watched the game, if you didn't watch the game, watch the highlights. Colombia with a litany of, like, rifle, thunder bastard long shots. Long shot after long shot. Absolutely unbelievable, some of it. Some of those were, like, that's going to be a goal of the tournament if that flies in.
13:51Some good goalkeeping on show, but, again, a lot of it was off target. The goal they actually did end up scoring was a bit of a tap-in. It was fine, decent enough goal. 1-1-0. they did have three disallowed goals, I think it was three, in the end three disallowed goals but regardless they go through to the round of 32 decent team, dangerous team Luis Diaz on there Rauljo is it? The other sort of big baller for Colombia has been scoring a lot of their goals decent side I put them into the category of teams I would not like England to draw in the next round and there's a few of those um four or five minutes left a lot of games to get through switzerland 2 canada 1 pretty uneventful game both teams have gone through to the next round of competition well done canada do you know me i keep going on about the host nation it's good for them to still be in the competition keep that momentum alive keep the joy alive well done nice one i like to see them in there switzerland as well a decent side decent side they play pretty well um bosnia-herzegovina against Qatar.
14:59Now, let me say, I'm going to say, is it Alubegovic? Let's say that. Alubegovic, remember the name. Absolute screamer. Scored an absolute screamer. Wonderful stuff. Qatar managed to get back into it. 2-1, they were putting a lot of pressure on, but ultimately it wasn't enough. Bosnia-Herzegovina added another one. They go through. Well done. um Edin Dzeko as well you know 40 41 years old still doing the business brilliant like you know fair play to him probably isn't getting the same amount of attention that Messi or Ronaldo are don't know why it's not really very fair is it he's doing really well um Morocco for Haiti too great great great game last night really really worth watching the highlights to this um Haiti probably if you've not seen it probably goal of the tournament thus far Isiador Isiador um for anyone that's seen Lord of the Rings um goal of the up unbelievable just absolute slapping screamer um a rocket very little back lift no run up just cannons it into the back of net all the way across the face of goal slaps into just like midway through the goal keeper fully outstretched just wonderful wonderful goal the sort of one that you know you just you love to see um but morocco yep they you know they they grinded this one out they mean they actually went one nil down then two one down and they fought and fought and fought back they win four two they're three to the next round and as i was saying above definitely definitely definitely one of those teams that i would not want england to draw at at some point in the competition.
16:47Sooner or later, you're going to draw one of these teams, but I'm just saying they are not a comfortable side by any stretch of the imagination. Really, really talented side, really play. Just some really nice front footed attacking incisive football. Really good team. Poor old Scotland, Bonnie Wee Scotland. They got done, didn't they, by Brazil. 3-0, no joy for the Tartan army there. All but out of the competition. I had a look there's an article that basically outlines exactly what needs to happen for Scotland to stay up. In short too long didn't read Scotland are out. Let's see Sylvie. Sylvie has some Scottish heritage and she's not very happy about that as you can hear.
17:32But Scotland are look they're basically out. Brazil clinical with their chances. I think that like the final score probably is not fully representative of the game if I'm brutally honest I thought Scotland were actually good I thought they were good value for a goal at least but the defending was just it was awful and do you know what this sort of like this playing out from the back stuff I think when you have some of the players available to you like Scotland do with all due respect especially in the defensive positions trying to play out from the back trying want to get too clever when you're playing a team against like Brazil you just you can't you can't be doing that you can't do that you know it's just you you've got to give a team like Brazil more respect they might not be the Brazil of old but they're still a team with a player like Vinicius Junior in there and they'll make you pay you know and they did they they put Brazil to the they put Scotland to the sword and it's a shame it's a shame it would have been nice to see them to do a bit more but they didn't in the end did they um south africa won south korea nil i think biggest biggest shock of the tournament so far absolutely has to be um south africa go through to the round of 32 for the first time in their history they haven't even um do you know i'm going to pause this and i'm going to i'm going to cheat my own system i'll pause both the timer and the recording so i'm not cheating really that much um south africa won korean nil biggest shock of the tournament um south yeah south africa go through into the round of 32 first well the neck the knockout stage is basically for the first time in their history and they've actually done it in the proper fashion they finished second none of this third place by technicality kind of um getting through to the next round it's you know top draw top draw stuff well done from them i mean what what a result against against south korea um and a largely a largely really disappointing south korea side um they've been really underwhelming at this world cup they've got some fantastic players uh you know sonny didn't really get the sort of swan song that he would have probably wanted it's largely disappointing every time i've seen him throughout this tournament and it's a shame it must be you know i think it'll be a period of rebuilding for them after you know having a few years of sort of gradual improvement um it feels like yeah they need to sort of usher in a new era of a project or something like that because it's you know this yeah this is this is this will be a disappointment for them i don't know if they're fully out yet or not I think they will also have the third place technicality stuff but it will be more than likely that they are 10 seconds left Chetichia versus Mexico huge result again for Mexico on home soil definitely a side I wouldn't want England to draw watch the highlights that's the timer but if you are going to watch the highlights their first goal Chavez his first international goal was just such a lovely, silky, straightforward goal, but he got put through one-on-one with the keeper and just silkily slotted it into the bottom corner past the keeper.
20:52It was such a slick, aesthetically pleasing goal. Really, really nice. Yeah, good luck to Mexico. Maybe they will go deep in this competition as well. They've got the home support. They've got a decent enough side. and yeah it's it's it's exciting to see um so just to give you the fully updated list of who's in and who's out of the world cup so far so we've got mexico through to the next round south africa switzerland canada bosnia and herzegovina brazil morocco united states germany france Norway, Argentina, Colombia all qualified and confirmed eliminated now Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Panama, Qatar and Chechia.
21:48So interesting few big few big games to come exciting I'm really really looking forward to France against Norway on Friday it's gonna be really really fascinating really exciting to see so yeah thanks so much i hope you have enjoyed the podcast and you are continuing to enjoy these as the world cup goes along please do share um share with people who aren't spurs fans as well as i keep saying i try to keep them fairly non spurs centric like subscribe all that type of thing again if you do want to support the show there is patreon patreon.com slash rtr pod and uh yeah much love enjoy the uh the heat or not

On today's 15-minute briefing:
Hate Watchers in Disarray: Portugal completely dismantle Uzbekistan 5-0. The big talking point? Cristiano Ronaldo finally gets himself on the scoresheet, leaving the hate watchers in absolute disarray.
England Frustrated by Ghana: A tricky, frustrating goalless draw for England as Ghana dug incredibly deep to earn a well-deserved point. It leaves me with one major question: should Ghana have actually had a penalty in this one?
Croatia Keep the Dream Alive: Croatia did exactly what they needed to do against Panama. A narrow 1-0 win, but it puts three vital points on the board to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
Colombia’s Goalkeeping Obstacle: Colombia spent the match rifling long shot after long shot against DR Congo, only to eventually settle it with a bit of a tap-in. We saw some more spectacular goalkeeping on display, and despite having three separate goals disallowed, Colombia get the win and march into the Round of 32.
Host Nation Joy Continues: A fairly uneventful 2-1 win for Switzerland over Canada, but the big news is that both teams are safely through to the next round. Huge well done to Canada for keeping the host nation joy alive and kicking.
Alajbegovic — Remember the Name: Bosnia and Herzegovina progress with a 3-1 win over Qatar, lit up by an absolute screamer from Kerim Alajbegović. Remember the name. At 2-1 Qatar were piling on some serious pressure, but ultimately it wasn't enough to stop the Bosnians going through.
Goal of the Tournament?: Morocco were made to work hard for their 4-2 win over Haiti, but it was illuminated by a strike from Wilson Isidor. Is that the goal of the tournament thus far?
No Joy for the Tartan Army: A harsh 3-0 defeat for Scotland against Brazil, which leaves them all but out of the competition. I don't feel the scoreline is an entirely fair reflection of how the game actually went, but Brazil were utterly clinical with the chances they created.
Historic South African Shock: Surely one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far. South Africa secure a famous 1-0 win to cruise into the Round of 32 for the first time in their history, dumping out a South Korea side who have looked largely underwhelming throughout this World Cup.
Mexico’s Home Warning: Another massive 3-0 result for Mexico on home soil against Czechia. Luis Chávez’s first international goal was an absolute beauty. They are looking dangerous—I certainly wouldn't want England drawing them anytime soon.
