This is your host Ekta and I'm really really excited about this interview because I'm going to be introducing you guys to a brand new technology that we don't really get to hear about, you know, in the States. And a lot of us are always looking for new and really effective solution to our skin goals. And I think a lot of the innovation that's taking place right now, as a lot of you know, is, you know, in the East, there's a lot of really cool technologies, innovations, you know, new novel solutions that are coming up all the time in the east and unfortunately we're always a little delayed you know here in the u.s and the west to get those you know advancements so without further ado i want to introduce you guys to shiko beauty which is the brand we're interviewing today but the person representing it is kyoko gets and we we've introduced kyoko before welcome back kyoko i'm excited to interview you again but she's really really an expert you know in the skin space she's been an esthetician with over a 20 year career you know in the skincare industry she's worked with some of the most phenomenal brands and she's here again you know introducing us to a new technology a new advancement so welcome back Kyoko I'm so excited to host you thank you so much Dr.
16Ekta I'm so so so honored to be here I'm truly well I'm honored to host you again I'm such a fan of yours and your work and it always just hits home for me you know you really know your stuff and I am excited to you know chat with you about just the brand and also this new mask this technology so before we get started can you give us a background kyoko just into like what got you interested in working with shiko beauty and you know what really led down led you down this road to work with them well so i've been in the skincare industry for 20 over 20 years and my passion is always looking for the new cutting edge ingredients and treatments and products and technology.
02And then, but then like, you know, of course, like I have to investigate and research and then it has to work, right? So I'm always looking into it. And then I came across carboxytherapy mask from Japan. Actually, when I first experienced was 20 years ago, they were just starting the professional gray carboxy therapy mask. And then I was so fascinated about it. But 20 years ago, I didn't have a background and experience. And then I would have loved bring the technology here, but I couldn't. And then so 20 years later, I had a chance to experience it through Chico Beauty. And then wait a minute, I know this brand and I have used it for 20 years ago.
48And I tried it. Of course, they are just evolving. So their technology has been even improved, even better. And they have amazing professional grade carboxytherapy masks. And so I got big fun of it. So I asked Shiko Beauty to bring this professional grade masks as well as retail products. And I wanted to introduce this amazing carboxy therapy technology to professionals in the U.S. and then also clients in the U.S. So here I am. Thank you so much for having me. Yeah, no, I mean, this is really, really interesting stuff. And I feel like, you know, Japanese beauty has been, we've gotten a little bit here and there.
30you know what I mean? As far as I know, in the skincare space, I haven't been around for that long. But as a consumer, I've only seen so many products, you know, only a few. And every time I'm just blown away, you know, by Japanese brands, because the innovation is just remarkable, you know, and it's just next level. At the end of the day, my skin ends up feeling like, like, where have I where has been my whole life kind of thing, you know, so I'm very excited to learn more about what exactly the carboxy mask is. You know, I would love to actually start there. If you could give us a little background on, you know, what is the whole idea of carboxytherapy and how does it really work?
08I think it's originally carboxytherapy started back in 1930s in France. Doctors started experimenting. I believe it was a carbonated water. The doctor was using the carbonated water to heal the wounds. And so I believe Dr. Masato Hiki, he is, by the way, he is the director of Hiki Clinic, and he is the one, he is the founder of Medium Research and Laboratories. He founded in 1997. So anyway, he was, he is a, he's practicing internal medicine and dermatology and then he was treating bed sores and wounds and he came across these studies and then he started experimenting carbonated water and then to me I could be wrong but in Japan we have so many hot springs and then some of them are carbonated springs and we we all know carbonated water is so great for health and and also the especially for the skin so I think that I believe that he was so fascinated about because it's so close to that you know our like everyday life that I mean because hot spring is so like you know I mean we can we can always go to the hot springs and then feel refreshed and then also that skin is soft and smooth and then so he started experimenting starting from carbonated water just like a carbonated spring and but then treating bed sore is a little hard you know because you you you cannot immerse the some of the body part to the like carbonated springs or carbonated water and then also that he started like putting the guards in the carbonated water and then start treating bed sores.
05And then he did see amazing results in terms of healing bed sores and wounds. And then he started thinking about how we can, because the carboxy acid is highly soluble in liquids and diffusing in the air. So he was trying to come up the idea of how we can make the carbonic acid in a very sufficient way. And then also that how long can we keep the carbonated acid, like keep producing. And so it can be effective to that skin. So he came up this idea of using the gel. So it kind of like traps the CO2. And then also so you can keep the CO2 production for 20 minutes or 30 minutes. And then that can be really effective.
57So that's how he came up the idea of using the gel. but of course it's not easy but then you know he finally came up the idea and he also started experimenting on his skin and and I mean he has a healthy skin of course he's a doctor in dermatology practicing dermatology so he has a healthy skin but still he was able to see amazing results in terms of skin texture and more firm firm and then just radiant so that's how he came across like oh maybe we can use this carbon therapy mask to aging age management purpose too so the whole thing started like okay maybe we can start treating other than bit sores and wounds so that's how like whole concept started that's really really fascinating because you know carbonated anything it's it's interesting to understand that there's such relevant science here because it really does you know anything carbonated is really working towards improving blood circulation which makes sense you know if we think about the skin because everyone always says you know our skin is our largest organ we hear that over and over again but then no one really talks about well what does that mean like in terms of like maintaining an organ and the number one thing that comes to my mind is circulation you know like the better blood flow that you have, the better your organs are going to feel, you know, and do and form.
29And so this is like a directly targeting certain aspects that we don't really think about when it comes to the skin. I mean, you know, we talk about pH balance and all of these other components, right, that are important for skin health. But yeah, this, the whole idea of, you know, really helping circulation, helping the flow of nutrients and blood through the entirety of the skin. I mean, that's huge, you know and and I've definitely noticed the results I mean I can tell you myself when I first tried it it was amazing like I I'd never experienced it from a mask before you know I love masks I think they're really great for people who don't have time for anyone in the audience that's listening and you guys you know you don't have time for a big skincare routine maybe you're like me and you use masks a lot you know so for me it was kind of a game changer when I tried it you know I was like this is great yeah yes and then absolutely and then I believe this is the I mean truly the best mask treatment I ever experienced like period and for me to say that that's that's huge it's huge yeah yeah I mean you've seen everything you've seen everything I mean so like any would you say there any like what are the situations that you would recommend this for people?
44Like what kind of skin types or maybe skin conditions that people are going through? Like when would you recommend that we utilize this mask? So because it was originally developed for healing wounds and bed sores, it's great for sensitive reactive skin clients. But overall, any skin conditions, dullness, uneven skin tone, pigmentation, skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles, dryness, dark circles, acne, elasticity, what else, you name it. So it's truly amazing. And then also that because of the, you know, great for sensitive reactive skin and acne skin, holistic estheticians are using it because some clients go through cancer treatments and we have to be really mindful and careful about treating those compromised skin.
35And then the carboxytherapy mask is great option. And then also that because of the promote healing process, these spa nurses and estheticians are using it after microneedling or the plasma fibrobras or laser treatment. Some may require downtime, but carboxytherapy mask will definitely help speed up the healing process. Makes sense. That makes sense. Yeah. I mean, I can imagine for like, especially like any kind of traumatic, you know, when you get an aesthetic procedure, you've got that redness, you've got that inflammation. So you do need that increased like attention to your to your skin's healing, you know, so definitely helping in the healing process, I'm guessing.
21So, I mean, it's very interesting to me, though, Kyoko, because I think that, you know, we talk about everyday stressors on our skin, you know, as general consumers. And sometimes the word microtrauma comes up, you know, and when I think about that, I think of things like, you know, you're going out into the sun a lot. You're maybe you're in a very busy city and you have all these stressors around you in the environment that are making your skin just little, you know, just little things are going on that are, I guess, microtraumas to your skin. And this is really great. You know, if you live in areas that require you to do a little bit more for your skin.
59Right. I mean, it would be a great way to maintain. So, yes, like application of CO2 induces muscle dilation and that leads to an increase of breast circulation. And then, like you said, like we don't talk enough about like how important to increase breast circulation for our health. So and then also the capillary, like, you know, it's so important because as we age, unfortunately the capillary density decreases right and then so but but then like i i believe the japanese company shiseido did the study about the capillary like because collagen production happened around the capillaries and so it is very important to have the good like you know circulation, of course.
50And then, and then also for the, like, you know, cell to, I mean, the, to good, to healthy cells, and then to create the energy needs oxygen, right? So, so like everything just connects to each other. So the carbonic acid, when the carbonic acid goes to your skin, and your body thinks like, we need more oxygen, and then increases breast circulation, and it increases breast circulation, stimulates the cell metabolism. And then, I mean, the stimulate cell metabolism can increase the collagen and fibroblast activity. So everything happens for reasons. Yeah. And so that's why this mask is really effective.
39And everybody should see the results even after one treatment. That's, I mean, yeah, I definitely did. The first time I used it, I definitely saw a result, you know, because that's rare too, by the way. Like, I mean, I think, I mean, you know this better than any of us, right? I mean, to see results right after the first time you use a product is like almost unheard of in today's, you know, space. Like, I think there's a lot of products out there that promise that, but it's very difficult to actually see. And I remember the first time I used the mask, you had just sent it to me. And I was like, oh, I have to try this.
12Kyoko sent it, you know, like, let me see. and I remember feeling like oh my gosh like did I just go and get a facial like did I actually go in and because that's how it feels like you just your face looks so much brighter it looks more even you just feel more radiant you know overall it's it's amazing yeah yes very amazing no I'm going to ask you though I want to ask you about like because you know you know how it is nowadays everybody has like 15 products they're using on a day-to-day basis so if we are using this carboxytherapy mask I mean are there certain products that you recommend we can use you know with it or anything that we shouldn't or avoid you know absolutely so so the median Dr.
58Median they did amazing research and study in terms of like how much oxygenated blood like in case I mean I mean, like they even experimented like OxyMetor to measure the oxygen in your blood, apply the carboxytherapy mask. So they have amazing study and research behind it. And then also that because they came across not just increases blood circulation, but then also that it penetrates products to deep layers of the skin. It's so much better penetration than drug delivery system that carbonic therapy mask has. So having said that, we always recommend to use, if you have a hyperpigmentation, you can use the brightening products before you apply the carboxytherapy mask.
50If you have acne, you can use the acne products before you apply this mask. and dryness same thing or firmness if you i mean you can use a hyaluronic acid or you can use vitamin c any products it can make even like better efficacy of the product so wow i mean i can see it being really really helpful for acne especially because if you're increasing like i mean it makes sense what you're saying like you know if it's increasing like the effectiveness of products I mean, capillary permeability is a real thing, you know, in medicine. Like, that's a, it's a very interesting subject, and it really has a lot to do with, you know, how things work, how drugs are delivered.
33You know, we talk about it a lot in, like, normal allopathic medicine, but, like, just thinking of that and then thinking about what this mask is doing, it makes sense that products do deliver better, you know, overall. because if you're working on the level of capillaries, yeah, there's the oxygen levels that you're increasing, but then also your capillaries are functioning better. So you're able to actually get things to where they need to go faster. And that makes sense. It's like more of a homogeneous system that you're creating when you're applying this mask and providing that extra oxygen delivery right there.
09So that's very interesting. And I think acne people, like people who have acne, they could probably benefit a lot, I mean, theoretically. Yes. And so that's why like many estheticians are using it because it works really well with any skincare professional like products they are using makes it even better. And then so the feedback have been amazing. Yeah, yeah. No, I can definitely see that. Now in terms of just, you know, is there one mask or is it like professional grade and then another grade for consumers? How does it how does this work in terms of when people are trying to purchase it? So we have the professional braid masks for professionals only.
48And then we also have a retail products. We have the one spout C gel, which is great for any skin types and any skin conditions. And then also we have the Bright Plus, which has a vitamin C and it's great for the brightening. if somebody has a hyperpigmentation, this may be a good option for that client. So those are the retail products. And then also we have a sheet masks. So this is kind of like easy and fun. Like, you know, you can just put it on in 10 minutes and then you can see amazing results. So we do have a professional version of sheet masks too, which, you know, it's great for, Because the gel and then the powder type, you have to scrape it and then you have to wipe it and wipe it off.
39But these sheet types, you don't have to, you know, rub your skin. So if somebody is doing that, like that treatment requires downtime, you don't want to necessarily rub their skin after the treatment. So these sheet masks, they're using that for the pulse treatment care. Interesting. Okay. Yeah, I like that. I like that it's in the sheet mask form. that's really convenient yes yeah that's very cool so in terms of like the i know you guys have done clinical there's a lot of clinical data here you know to support this what are some of the other studies and i would love for you to dive into that a little bit for our listeners because you know how it is everybody right now is looking for that science that data you know something to really validate and i'd love to hear more about your your clinical results that you've seen you I know.
26And so in Japan, because they've been around for over 25 years, they have done so many different studies. And then they also have 21 patents worldwide. So their dermatologists in Europe have done some studies as well. But we wanted to create something from the retail versions of the products because everybody's looking for a quick fix. Right. so we kind of wanted to create something like okay what because they've done in japan they've done 30 days straight use of carboxy gel mask study and we kind of wanted to see what if we do six days and what will happen to the skin so of course we did that before after photo even after one treatment which is amazing and I can't wait to share but then also we did this after six days what would happen and so we did that image analysis before after photo and then also the perception study and then they all are phenomenal results so image imaging analysis like 76 percent like significantly improved the skin texture so and then this one is done by 35 subjects age 35 to 65 and a female and a male and then the different skin types and then different skin color and then we were we we knew we were gonna get great results but these results are I hate to say it, but better than I thought.
11But yes, before, after photos, in terms of like, everybody's skin was like radiating. And also that like firmness, some people got great lift. And also dark circles. It's kind of hard to treat. but we we've seen amazing results in terms of like improving like dark circles fine lines and wrinkles firmness skin texture it was phenomenal yeah no it sounds really cool I mean I think that when you're able to target multiple things like that I mean that really speaks to like the importance of certain ingredients you know I think like we get as consumers we get so bogged down by like these very like I don't know complicated regimens you know for our skin health and you know you know how it is you know with consumers we we love buying everything you know we want to buy every single thing but sometimes there it comes along like you know one one thing that just works really well for a lot of different problems you know it's a solution for multiple things and I really always encourage our listeners go for those products because sometimes you will get results that you don't expect so you mentioned the dark circles that's why I'm saying this you know maybe you maybe you didn't think it could work for dark circles and it does you know because we just don't know sometimes what's going to work for the skin what's not so this is very fascinating yes and most of the dark circles are like you know that your skin is thin and then you can see the like you know the blood vessels yeah but vessels and then so increases blood circulation and then like sometimes it's like you know that will totally changes the dark circles the way it looks And then so that's why it's very effective.
57Of course, pigmentation, it takes a little bit longer time. But because of the amazing drug delivery system, even that you're using brightening products, this mask can make it even better. yeah that's really cool I mean I like that I like things that you can use with other products you know because that's I mean that's the reality of of today's kind of skincare space I think you know it's very hard to get people away from their other products but if we can introduce something that's going to really help and it's going to become like you know enhancer of what you're doing already I mean that's ideal so very very fascinating now I want to ask you this is a little general question But like, you know, when you look at the way that U.S.
41consumers, right, like how we're using products, how we're, you know, what's being done to target skin concerns, like where do you see all of this fitting in? I mean, do you think that it's a shift in the way that we do our own skin health practices? Or I mean, what are your thoughts around that? Well, you know, the skincare is just like, I mean, it's how should I say it? Like, please go see a physician or a dermatologist or a nurse, like once a month or every two weeks, please do. But everyday care is so important. Just like you're, you know, will you go see personal trainer once a week? But if you don't work out every day, you don't get the ideal body you want.
24So the like skincare is very, very like, you know, consistency is key. and then also that if you have skin concern conditions you want to improve everyday care is very important so even like u.s customers are now realizing that like you know i mean everyday care is very important consistency is the key so even my clients like they're always looking into like what would be a beneficial for my skin not because of the hype or trend trendiness what would really benefit me and and so you know and then there are so many like so much information and then like you you can research and you can you can look for the information but i'm not saying that all the information is unnecessary accurate or correct but people are more like educating themselves customers are more educated so to me it's like again carbonic therapy masks are getting now more and more in the market but just because people started realizing that how important these like blood circulations and and also the mitochondria like you know but like cells renewals so i believe that people are more educated and so that's why it's tend to they tend to try these new products absolutely yeah that makes sense that makes a lot because, you know, I think it's interesting how science is integrating itself, you know, into an OTC kind of space where before, I mean, the real professionals, I mean, you know, the science because you worked in this field for so long, you know, and I think that a lot of the professionals understand how the science of the skin works.
14But for consumers, there is this emergence now of more wanting to be more educated, wanting to understand why does my skin react the way it does? You know, why does it something work and then something doesn't work? So this whole like back and forth is very, for me, it's very interesting to watch, you know, because I think consumers like they are also getting sick of the trends, if I'm honest, you know, we get a lot of feedback from our audience and our listeners that, hey, you know, I've tried 15 products, and nothing's working. It doesn't get rid of my hyperpigmentation, it doesn't fix my acne or whatever their concerns are and usually for me I you know I'm not shocked that we're getting those emails but at the same time it's like that's why we're always waiting for the new and better thing and I think that's where these trends come from is that people are not seeing results you know and they're not seeing what they want to see so I recommend I really do recommend this math to almost everybody listening honestly it's really really good and I think for me the intriguing part about it is it's new and it it's new in the best way you know I've never seen something like it before and it really shows you results immediately and the way I see it when the way consumers are feeling frustrated these days I mean if you want something that's actually going to work like please give this a try because it really does you know it's overnight results and that's very rare that that happens you know with any product so yes and then Japanese beauty is all about honor yourself honor your skin it's more nurturing and then also that look for like how we can have a healthy skin and a beautiful skin within so having said that this approach really works for like not necessarily japanese people but for like people all over the world and then no matter what like you know what kind of skin conditions you may have or skin color this must work for anybody yeah yeah no it's really cool I mean I think it's because it's based in science you know yeah and then I know you love science so there you go yeah exactly exactly no I think that's it you know science is the real thing that drives unity you know amongst people and I think at the end of the day when it comes to skincare we should be having a science forward approach because at the end of the day you're it's an organ you know it's real physiology that you're dealing with it's not just and then dr hickey published the book about of course carboxy therapy but then also like mitochondria and aging as well so he has amazing wealth of knowledge and experiences and so i'm absolutely honored to introduce his technology and his amazing brilliant brain to all over the world yeah absolutely no that's absolutely brilliant And I like that he's working with or explaining the role of mitochondria because, you know, when it comes to that's all oxidative stress, you know, all of that stuff.
15It's really about understanding that there is a cellular level of health that we have to understand, you know, and when we understand that level, then that's how we know where to go for what we need in our lives, whether it's products, whether it's the right treatments, you know, what professionals you go to. All of that plays a role. And so it's very fascinating that he's doing that and really hats off to you for bringing this forward and to us, to introducing it to us. So thank you. Yes. Thank you so much. I'm a honor. No, I love it. And I really encourage everybody listening. You guys have to try it.
52I'm not joking. I mean, it's really a, it's such an innovative treatment and it's something you can do so easily. You know, that's the best part. It's easy, you know. It's not something where you have to wait 60 days to see any sort of a result. That's, I think, one of our biggest pain points as consumers is a lot of people promise things and they say, oh, yeah, this is going to help you with whatever XYZ condition that you're dealing with. But like I said, when you can deliver results quickly, I mean, that's really what we're looking for in the skincare space from what I understand. So I really encourage our listeners, definitely check out Chico Beauty.
