In short

The episode reviews the inaugural Hundred player auction in London, focusing on how the move from earlier drafts to an auction reshaped team building, money, and franchise identity. Key topic areas include headline spending, strategy under pressure, and the loss of long-standing fan affiliations (e.g., Oval Invincibles becoming MI London).

Guest backgrounds

Nasser Hussain (former England captain, long-time cricket analyst) and Tash (podcast host/analyst, co-commentator).

Key claims

auction dynamics are “surreal” and unpredictable; where a player appears in the auction affects outcomes; big-money signings create career pressure and dressing-room jealousy; home-pitch planning matters; female coaching representation should grow but not be rushed.

Notable examples

women’s auction topped £6.6m; men’s topped £15.6m. Tilly Courtine Coleman returned to Southern Brave for £105k. Tom Moody’s presence is credited with improving table strategy. Specific team notes include Birmingham Phoenix (Davina Perrin £50k), London Spirit (Devolved Brevis £390k), Manchester Super Giants (Tom Moody-led “best day”), MI London (Tom Curran £260k), and Trent Rockets (Georgia Adams unsold; Samantha Bates signed).

0:01Yeah, gone! Gone! He gets his fairytale ending! An epic way to go to a Test Match 100. The London Spirit of First Time win is the most remarkable thing you'll probably ever see in cricket. 604 and final Test wicket that's due a fall. It's ended when the T20 World Cup. England's captain Ben Stokes, while he is there, England have hope.

0:32Well the first ever 100 auction has come to a close here in London. Bit of history for British sport and a lot of money has been spent that is for sure. Tash and Nasser alongside me. Let's just give you some headline numbers though. The women's auction was yesterday, north of£6.6 million spent on salary. Today it was the men's turn, north of£15.6 million have been spent. Nass, you and I did the original draft for the 100. This had a very different feel and very different numbers associated with it. Yeah, huge numbers and some life-changing numbers for certain individuals as well in the last couple of days.

1:09And with those numbers comes the quality. If you look at the men's squads behind our shoulders, but also the women's squads yesterday, some real quality throughout. I'm not saying they weren't there originally when this tournament first started, but now you're looking at sort of seasoned franchise overseas and domestic players. It's felt weird the last couple of days. You know, it's been a bit sort of fantasy football-ish and a bit bargain hunt, combining and seeing what you're left with. It's been very interesting and you've got some quality sides. It's also, I have to say, been very confusing because you've got new sides, new branding of teams.

1:48and so it's been taking a bit of time just to get your head round who plays for who who coaches who hopefully that will come with time we'll come back to that in just a second because we are sitting at the Mumbai Indians London table who of course were the oval invincibles so we'll come back to Nasser's point in a minute I was watching on the television yesterday you were here yesterday and today what's your override and experience of what you've witnessed over the last 48 hours well I just think the whole thing has been surreal hasn't it the amount of money and obviously yesterday in the women's game, if you said to me even a couple of years ago, over£6.6 million would be spent on 100 players, the women in particular, you wouldn't really be able to get your head around it, and it's been quite nice, we've sort of been on a balcony, so we've been sort of looking at the teams from above, and what's been really nice is almost just seeing how the strategy on the tables work, who sits next to who, you know, how quickly you have to think on your feet as the teams, and it's just been really surreal and I just can't quite believe it and there'll be players out there that have had life-changing amounts of money and they must be sitting in their homes right now thinking I can't believe what's just happened.

2:58Let's go about the brand identity though and the identity and the affiliation with the teams. ECB spoke about tribalism and all that sort of stuff. We've been to so many hundred games where kids are coming through with Oval Invincible shirts, London Spirit shirts, whatever. This is now MI London. We watched something on the telly up there in a break. It was Sam Billings leading that side. And we knew their identity. We knew the style of play. A lot of the players had a great affiliation with the Oval. That has to start again. That is a problem. It's gone. And to be honest, in the last few years of the 100, it's only been one or two sides.

3:33I think the Northern Superchargers did it, especially with the women. And that's why they ended up being successful. And the Oval Invincibles, definitely, you turned up. And you saw that connection between the fans and the players because a lot of their players at the Oval did come through that system and played there. So I think that's been ripped up. Let's be honest. Look at those names. If I asked you to name now the Manchester Super Giants team, you'd have to turn around and have a little look. Aidan Mark. That's gone. So we've talked about the money here. And it's funny because sport is about money.

4:03What is the best product, in my opinion, from British sport at the moment is the Premier League, football. So that is about money. but it's more than money as well sport it's that affiliation that bonding that history between a fan and that club and i think that's what eventually the hundred the ipl has done that but it's been going on for a very long time and there's an affiliation with individuals as well rcb with virat kohli i think the thing you mentioned there there is more of affiliation with a team that mumbai indian kid now or mi london kid will rock up and want to support the team he he or she may not know who's actually playing on that day and that may come with time what about the actual setup of this auction so gone from a draft to an auction i was speaking with tom moody just before he ran out because it's too cold him and justin langer just arrived from perth it's 39 degrees you said he had a very important role to play yesterday because he was on the table when the women were being selected why what sort of impact input would he have helped in that instance?

5:07Well look it's the first auction in this country and then also on the women's side you know there's only the WPL that would have been a couple of auctions so far for a team to have someone like Tom Moody who has been there he's done it all around the world and he's been involved in so many auctions you can actually see their table just work really coherently you could tell that he was sort of in charge making the final decision so that was interesting yesterday to see you know the teams with WPL affiliations how they worked and you know teams like Trent Rockets and Welsh Fire you just felt that maybe the whole thing was very new for them and you could you could kind of see potentially in their strategy it took them a bit of time to get going and then they almost had too much money left at the end for the last round so that was interesting so people like Tom Moody is really key for this women's hundred to go forward in in the auctions because he's been there and done it all around the world.

6:01Well, as I mentioned, over£6.6 million was spent yesterday in the women's auction. As Tash said, life-changing sums of money. And there was one amazing story yesterday, young Tilly Courtine Coleman. She's 18 and Southern Brave paid over£100 ,000 for her. And she spoke yesterday excitedly to Alex Hartley. Right, I've got Tilly Courtine Coleman. Tilly, you've got a huge smile on your face and rightly so you've gone back to the southern brave for 105 000 pounds how do you feel i honestly don't think i can put it into words i actually just couldn't believe it i was not expecting that whatsoever and i loved my time at brave so being back there i'm absolutely buzzing it must feel so good knowing that they wanted you so badly yeah it does to be fair obviously had some comms before the auction like a few weeks before and obviously anything can happen so although I kind of took their word for it I was still very nervous so yeah for them to keep going after me I couldn't believe it and I'm so grateful.

7:05At what point during the auction did because you said you were watching it with a couple of your teammates did you turn around to your teammates and go this is wild? I think from the first bid to be honest with you I just couldn't believe that like even bid on me to begin with and yeah I think once it got to around 50k I think that's that's when dad started filming and I was we honestly we were like jumping up and down on the bed crazy that I'm admitting that out loud but it was no good how much has your phone blown up since well I was on my phone because I wanted to phone my parents because obviously I'm in Pretoria but then when I went on my iPad to join the call it said I had 318 messages so quite a lot you said you'd had some comms with the brave before the the auction started was there word just that they they wanted you and they were going to bid to I guess secure you uh it was more discussions about kind of what I should enter myself in it and um obviously carts mentioned the fact that they were keen to get me back but um like I say anything can happen and you don't know what's gonna happen on the day so when it actually happened I just lost for words how does it feel being the most expensive left arm spinner in this competition so far am i yeah but quite a long way no that's not um amazing i didn't even know that honestly i'm on cloud nine sorry that is crazy yeah amazing how important has the hundred been for your career you're obviously just said you're on tour with england now over in south africa how much do you put your success down to playing on the stage at 100 hugely to be honest I'd say first year of 100 I put myself in on a bit of a win to be honest I wasn't really planning to and then one of my Surrey teammates mentioned while I was on pre-season tour before I even had a contract that I should enter myself in and then obviously Lottie picked me up and I think my career just kind of took off from there um yeah I then quickly got a Surrey contract in there sorry as a Southeast Stars contract players you play.

9:08And then, yeah, kind of from there, it's been the rest. So, yeah, hugely important. Well, no wonder she was delighted. £105 ,000 should be paid for this summer's 100. Delight to say Ravi Vapara has joined the cell, Nas and Tash. Now, you've been involved in these. What's it like as a coach when you're trying to fill in the names of an auction? what's it like as a player when you're waiting to try and find a spot on the side must be emotionally like that very emotional especially when you've got owners sitting on the table as well because they've got their eyes set on certain guys that they want in their team you know no that's the guy i want that's the guy i want i want to put my hand up so you need to talk to the owners first say look we've planned this over the last month couple of months these are the guys we really want to go for these are the budgets that we want to get go up to uh but i find that auctions never really go to plan.

10:04You might have planned for about three or four weeks that we're going to have a strong batting line-up and these will be our bowlers. And all of a sudden, you get outbidded on those batters and you have to switch now and go, OK, maybe we may need to go with a strong bowling line-up and spend our budget there. So things can change so quickly in an auction. But on the players' side of things, it's quite exciting. It does depend where you come out in the auction. If you come out a bit later when the budgets are depleted and you think, oh, I don't get much money, But when you come up front and you're one of the marquee players, very exciting to know how much you're going to get.

10:37Is it going to be life changing? So all those things. I mean, you've had more clubs than Tiger Woods, let's be honest. So what's been your biggest earner? IPL. IPL, yeah. What club? Who have you played for? Punjab. Did you? Can you remember the exact figure? Yeah. It was peanuts compared to what they pay now. 475, it was there. A couple of years at the IPL. and that was played for sunrises as well had a little stint with the sunrises not quite as much as the first couple of years it's worth we're going to talk about the the women's side of the hundred for the next 10 or so minutes again going back that first draft and that first year 15 000 pounds was the top now 105 000 for young tilly 210 for the likes of uh sophie divine extraordinary it is i think that's what's happened uh with the auction it's sort of elongated from bottom to top, whereas when the draft was there, they were all a bit more closely packed.

11:36And I think that's why your question to Ravi is quite a good one. It's not just what happens on the day, it's what happens after. Because there'll be some players now, like Tilly, like Danny Gibson, players like that, that will suddenly be like, wow, the focus of attention is on me. I've got to deliver. The pressure is on. There'll be a bit of jealousy out there as well. Why? Why so much money? Why not me? and you've got overseas players like Deepti Sharma going at a fraction of the price. So it does just alter the dynamic of your career a little bit and that's where coaching comes into it as well.

12:12A coach will have to put some of these big name, big money players to one side and sort of build them up but also say this is why we're paying the money for you, we really value you. So it is a dynamic of your life that changes in the dressing room and out of the dressing room. It's a good point because, again, we keep talking about the headline numbers, but let's just drop it down. So you've got Sophie Devine, Beth Mooney, Kiwian Australian, 210. Danny Gibson gets 190, which was extraordinary. We'll touch on her in a minute. But then as Nas said, you've got Deepti, one of the biggest names in the game, getting 27.5 grand.

12:44Alana King only went for 37.5. So that disparity is something that does need to be managed somehow. Yeah, it does. And actually, you've seen a couple of domestic, well, quite a few domestic players, actually, who have earned less than they were last year because obviously the big stars have gone for way more money and actually by the time it got round to the sort of second band of players, those domestic players, people like Bryony Smith and Emma Lamb, they're actually earning pretty much half of what they earned last year. So as Nass said, you know, the auction actually does just open things up a lot.

13:16I guess that's just your market value, isn't it? And, you know, it's not, as a player, I guess you would have to be in a position to sort of make sure that you just perform as well because, you know, you can go for all the money in the world in the auction, but actually you're only going to get kept at that team if you do well as well. So just something to keep an eye on. And, yeah, just the disparity has gone a little bit bigger in that women's side. Let's have a look down some of the teams. We're going to start with the Birmingham Phoenix, who directly signed or pre-signed four players. Capsi, Lauren Filer, Lucy Hamilton on a direct signing and Elise Perry.

13:51So the first pick yesterday was Davina Perrin, came out at 50 grand. I'm wondering if she could have gone into the pre-auction and got a bit more. Well, she probably could have. And I think we were all expecting Davina Perrin, obviously 100 in the Eliminator in the last year of the 100, for her to go for actually a little bit more money. But because she came out first, and you almost saw the first four picks, the teams were quite tentative to get going. And the auction didn't really get going until Danny Gibson came out last. So someone like Davina Perrin, she put herself out there going into the auction, obviously coming off the back of a brilliant hundred last year.

14:28And she probably would have felt that she would have gone for a little bit more money. But, I mean, 50k, she's going to be batting at the top with Tammy Beaumont. So she's got a nice opening partnership there. And then also getting to play under Elise Perry, who's going to captain the side as well. So that's also one of the nuances of the auction, isn't it? As Ravi said, it's where you come out as well. What do you see in that line-up with the Birmingham Finals? What stands up for you? I mean, the two openers, Perrin and Beaumont, you've got the experience and you've got the new kid on the block.

14:56You've got Alana King, Lindsay Smith as well. So there's two qualities. I think Lindsay Smith is a top, top signing there. Got a lot of experience. I think Annery Dirksen that came out last, I think that's 15 ,000. I think that's a really good value bid. When you look at these things, it's about the value of a player. They've got an absolute steal there. That's a good mix. Cordelia Griffith, I like her. I've always liked her as a cricketer. So they've got a good mix in there. Going back to Davina Perrin, I think at her stage of the career, it's very easy for me to say this, at her stage, it is not so much just about the headline figure.

15:32It is about who she's playing with, Elise Perry. Where is she playing as well? What's that pitch like? I think sometimes, you know, Ravi will tell you batting at Lords or something. I looked today, Joe Root, and Joe Root came up. Was he the first one out? I think he was. Very first. and there was a bid between Headingley, Leeds, and Welsh Fire Cardiff. And if I'm Joe Rue, and you don't have a say, do you, as a player, as a batter, I want to go and be playing on that flat pitch at Leeds, whereas playing at Cardiff, where it can be a bit trickier or whatever, just makes it a little bit harder. So it's a different dynamic from when we played as county players.

16:07We would have that in the back of our mind. I'm not going to go there. That's a dodgy pitch. I will go and batter the oval. That's a top pitch. Whereas now you just go where you're told, And I think Davina going to Edgbaston, which is a very good pitch, having the likes of Elise Perry there, having Tammy Beaumont, who's been there, done it at the other end as an opening combination. I think that's more important than the 50 grand headline figure. On a broader point, building a team. Now, I've got the Birmingham Phoenix women's team and the Birmingham Phoenix men's team in front of me. That's all right.

16:37That's on paper. But what about building a team when you've got so little time together? that these guys and girls will turn up five minutes before it starts and you're into it? Well, you could try getting them together before that, ideally. I mean, there's going to be a lot of county cricket going on. There's going to be the domestic T20s going on. So it is difficult to get them all together. But if you can get the overseas in nice and early and get them practicing in England and get them together, that's the best you can do. on the positive side a lot of a lot of these players know each other anyway from playing other franchise cricket so it does you know you do kind of go into a dressing room knowing each other to a certain extent and when you're playing on the big stage you just want to get your job done you remember you're you are playing for your reputation so you want to do the best you can the most important thing you can do is do your job as the best you can do at your ability I'm going to move on to the London Spirit women's side and the pre-selections were Charlie Dean, Mahika Gore, Grace Harris the Australian and Marazan Cap.

17:40Now Marazan Cap has gone across the Thames to London Spirit. Now we were talking earlier about affiliations with the Oval which is now MI London. She was part of the furniture at the Oval. She's now got to go across to the Thames. As a player do you have to just completely ignore that this is my new franchise team, teammates, coach, whatever, get on with it. Absolutely in franchise cricket yes slightly different if you've been at a county for example for 10 years and then you have to suddenly move to another county that's slightly different that can become emotional but I think in franchise cricket there's no real loyalty when it really comes down to it it's a business at the end of the day and that's a little bit how the players have to treat it to some extent it is a business they've got short careers whoever's going to pay the money to for for those players you go there and you perform and you do a job.

18:28What sort of bases of London Spirit women got covered? Would you stay there? What are their challenges? Well, I think their seam attack is brilliant, which actually suits, obviously, the Lord's pitch as well. We've seen it swinging around. Obviously, you said Marazan Cap, Mahika Gore. She was a brilliant signing for them. You can sort of see Mahika Gore coming in from the pavilion end and Marazan Cap from the other. I think their biggest signing from yesterday was Nadine de Klerk. She's had a brilliant World Cup. She's also had a brilliant WPL as well. I think they got her for 170k. So I think they look slightly stronger in the seam department.

19:01Obviously, Charlie Dean, she's probably going to captain the side. So I think they've got some good youngsters. And then Grace Harris, they've got the firepower. So I think they look pretty balanced. And I would just say their seam attacks looks the most strong in that side. What are you looking at with Manchester here? So you've got Sophie Eccleston, Meg Lanning and Smriti Mandana as the direct signings. Paige Schofield had a nice pay day at 115. What about the balance of their side, given the pitches at Old Trafford as well? Yeah, I think they've got a good combination there. If you talk about domestic cricket, you then talk Paige Schofield, you talk Rhianna McDonnell-Gay, Catherine Bryce, Maddie Villiers has been around for a while now.

19:40And then there are overseas superstars in Meg Lanning, Mandana, Richard Gauche. I thought that was a steal. 50 grand. 50 grand. I'm going double that at least. Because what you want in the women's game, and there's more of them now, are people who hit boundaries, who clear the boundaries, are six hitters, and she is definitely that. So that looks like a good combination. Obviously, you've got Sophie Eccleston, who's world class. You've got a good combination of international players, but domestic quality, real quality domestic players there as well. OK, MI London women, you were here obviously yesterday.

20:13Their direct stylings were Mealy Kerr, Kiwi, Hayley Matthews, fantastic. And Danny White-Hodge has come up from the south coast. I know she's been in and around Surrey, but what do you see when you see that side? Well, I think they've got a lot of all-rounders in their side. It was interesting yesterday, actually, Lisa Kitely. She was obviously Northern Superchargers coach last year that won. And Holly Armitage, she said to me yesterday, is one of the best captains that she's ever seen. She's brought Holly Armitage into her side at My London. So I think she's going to be the captain of the side.

20:48And I think they've just got really good all-rounders. They've got Nick Carey, who has come from Mumbai Indians as well. They've got Chanel Henry, the big hitter. So I think they look a really well-rounded side with a lot of all-rounders. Tara Norris is a weird one. She just seems to bowl in the power play. I think last season she hardly bowled out the power play. Can we stop before we go on to the other sides? You mentioned Lisa Kitely there. It's been written by a couple of papers today that it was a very male-dominated room yesterday. and she is the only senior full-on female coach in that team.

21:23How much of a problem do you see that? And should there be others? And what names would you throw out there? I think then you want there to be others in the future, but you don't want to rush female coaches or staff members almost before they're ready. They need to make sure that they've got the experience. And obviously, because of the way that cricket is, there's been a lot more auctions and franchise cricket in the men's game. So there's going to be a lot more male domination in sort of a room like this. But obviously you want more people like head coaches like Lisa Kitely, Charlotte Edwards.

21:58It was great to see Sarah Taylor here yesterday and also today on the men's table. She's obviously worked across men's game and the women's game. So I think you want more women involved, but you also don't want to fast track them too much because you want to make sure that the people you have in your teams have the experience and just getting the balance right of obviously getting more females involved but also the ones that have the experience to sort of move up to the next level. How much does home advantage play a thing in the 100? We've seen the Trent Rockets try and sort of scuff pitches up a little bit which they did at the start of the 100 and then the ECB came down quite harsh on there to make them a bit flatter.

22:35Do you think that'll happen more now that it's not ECB run, it's franchise run? It's funny that because looking at the auction today, a lot of the teams were sort of preparing around their sort of home advantage. You saw teams going with heavy spin like the Manchester Super Giants. I thought they've got some good spinners. They've got some good players of spin as well. And you can see with some of their seamers, the ones who take the pace off the ball, they've put them in the squad because they know that they can give them good value on home grounds. If you can win your home games, you're pretty much halfway there to qualifying, or even more than halfway there.

23:14And you've got to win a couple of games away from home. You're into the next round and quite close to the final. So I've seen teams now planning for their home pitches, very much so. Southern Brave, what you've seen with the Southern Brave. Izzy Wong, 130. I mean, she obviously has been in and around, but has that surprised me, that number, given what she's done of late? and obviously you've got Tilly Courtine Coleman and Lauren Bell's been paid a fortune to be taken straight in. Yeah, she has, isn't she? I think there's probably some England players actually that were almost seeing yesterday, hoping that they'd actually put themselves out there and gone in the auction because we saw Lauren Bell and Natsi Rebrunt at 140k pre-signing and then obviously we saw Danny Gibson come out for 190k.

23:55But I think the Southern Brave, I think they had a very good day yesterday. Their head coach, Jonathan Batty, along with Anya Shrubsall, they've got an international bowling attack. They've got Sophie Molyneux, the new Australian captain, Izzy Wong, Sarah Glenn was a great signing yesterday, Lauren Bell, and obviously the youngster Tilly Courtine Coleman. So their bowling attack looks really strong. And then their pre-signings of Laura Woolvard, they got Jimmy Rodriguez for an absolute steal, and also Lizelle Lee and Maya Boucher. So I think they had a really good day, if not the best day yesterday.

24:26And I'm not surprised with Jonathan Batty. He's been involved in a few auctions. The two I'd like to just name there are actually at two ends of their careers. In Lizelle Lee, at 27-5, that is a good signing. Lizelle Lee, I can guarantee you she'll win three games for that side. She may go 0-0-0 and then she'll get 140 deliveries. She's a real talent. She smashes it, Miles. And Jodie Grucock, England are looking for a left-hander. I think you're going out to South Africa soon to interview some of the team. she's out there she's a she's a talent I think this is a big big hundred coming up for the likes of Jodie Grucock let's move to Sunrise's Leeds and the headline there was yesterday when Danny Gibson got picked up for 190 I want to just talk about targets on players back when they've got a number like that and the pressure that you have to deal with right Danny Gibson we didn't think you're going to get 190 but you know what you've got 190 now deliver that's different that's that's massive pressure when you've got that number on your head and you know you've got to perform to that level especially when you've got owners as well there'll be owners about they want that performance from you because you're one of the most expensive players and that's a that's a difficult thing to to deal with as a player just you feel like everybody's watching you all the eyes are on you there might not be people just kind of forget about it and they but nasa will keep mentioning it on on comms and keep mentioning how much they're being paid but it's a difficult thing to to put up with and keep performing because you feel like you need to perform in every game but the reality is in franchise cricket world-class performers will win you two games three games out of ten and contribute in a couple others and that's how you've got to break it down can you can I break it down and say out of ten games if I can win my team two or three games I've had a good tournament and if I can chip in somewhere with a couple of games here and there that's a pretty strong tournament for any player I think where she's lucky is Aidy Beryl the coach.

26:22I think he's got really good emotional intelligence. He's a very experienced coach. He already has spoken about this situation. He had a similar one with Tristan Stubbs in SA20, went for a huge amount of money. He will drag Danny to one side and he'll put an arm around. And that seems an odd thing to say when someone's got 190 grand. But when you're being paid more than international players have done it for a decade or so, you have a target on your back, as you just said so you will need looking after so just with Sunrise's lead the women so Phoebe Litchfield and Annabelle Sutherland they're two top top overseas Kate Cross is there Danny Gibson as we mentioned Deepti Sharma so Lauren Winfield Hill has actually made the trip up there she's got captaincy experience I want to move on to Trent Rockets how do you see them lining up well their top four is absolutely gun isn't it Dunkley Mooney Nat Siverbrunt and Ash Gardner I wouldn't like to be an opening bowler there for sure and I feel that they've gone really batter heavy.

27:20I think they might be, they have kind of bits and pieces bowlers. I thought it was quite strange yesterday. I felt that they needed an extra seamer. Shabna Mishmael, she went unsold and she was kind of there for the taking. And they've gone a bit left field. They've picked Samantha Bates, the left arm spinner from Australia. So I think they've done well with the batting. I think they look a little bit lacklustre with the ball if I'm honest in the men's much like sam billings which will come on to but georgia adams went unsold to start with an event she was picked up by trent rockets which is remarkable she's done so well down at the southern brave leading that side they had a really bad year and then they bounced back now all of a sudden she's in the ranks at trent rockets i know it's something that leading up to this uh auction it's been noticeable how ruthless it's become some of them don't even get a text or whatever they don't get the owners is it that ruthless isn't it i mean sam billings was saying he was captain three people so did lauren winfield hill she said is that the same thing yeah No messaging or whatever.

28:15We're not interested. Move on. It's just a business, isn't it, Rav? No wonder you love it. It's no loyalty and just a business. It's no loyalty. Right, Welsh fire finally on the women. Sophie Devine, what a payday for her. I mean, quality, but she is coming towards the end. Emma Arlott got a nice 110. What about the way they line up, given the conditions that are in Cardiff, which can be a little bit tacky. You've got wide, straight boundaries, very short. sorry, wide square boundaries, very short straight boundaries. Yeah, well, they've obviously, you know, their leggy would be Georgia Wareham, who probably bowls at that quicker pace.

28:52So she does sort of get hit square of the wicket. So that's probably why they've gone for a leg spinner of her sort of kind. If I look at their team, I was glad that they got Sophie Devine. I think she's going to have to captain in this side. I think it's a very young team. I felt that maybe could they have gone for a little bit more experience? You've got the likes of the youngsters of Elimac, Freya Kemp, who I'm really looking forward to see. England needs a left-hander and she's probably the first one up for grabs. And Sarah Bryce. I think what Welsh Fire have done, they've actually picked a few players that they've had at their side previously, which is interesting because you've got the loyalty, but they also haven't done that well.

29:32So what I would say about Welsh Fire, they've got a lot of potential, but do they potentially need a few more senior players with Sophie Devine? A lot rests on her shoulders. It's a good point you make about captaincy, because one thing we've noted about the England women's cricket team is that at times they've lacked leaders. When Heather Knight was axed and then they moved on, there wasn't a long list of people. And I'm pleased, like Charlie Dean, Dean's done quite a bit. But the problem with franchise cricket is you get your overseas in, they captain, I'd like to see a bit more, and I don't know how much, I don't think they can anymore.

30:04I've spoken to Lydia Greenway about this, and Lidz has said they can't interfere too much. If you do want someone to play a bit more, if you do want someone to get a bit more captaincy experience, it's none of your business now. It's down to the franchise.

31:21Right, so as I say, over£6.6 million were spent on the women's auction yesterday. today if you include the pre-selections the men's teams north of 15.6 and Tom Curran took a little chunk out of that he's staying at the Oval it's not for the Oval Invincibles it's for MI London and he's been speaking to Alex Hartley. Tom Curran you're going home you're going back to MI London how are you feeling? Yeah you said it there going home I'm buzzing it's been a nervy morning to be honest. So yeah I've been watching, been watching, been shooting. Yeah it's crazy, unbelievable. Obviously some amazing players and so many different scenarios playing out in the head so to be going back home and obviously for so much money is obviously very very exciting.

32:14Well£260 ,000, when that kept going up and up and up how were you feeling? well I must have paused at some point over the morning because my phone started going off I was like what is going on here so I clicked sky to go back to time and we were up to around 180 and Polly had that paddle so at that stage it was a win and I just wanted to be back at home so yeah like I said huge results be back at the Oval MI London new chapter let's go Had you had pre-conversations with the Oval or MI London? Sorry about going back there. I mean, a few, a few. Sam's obviously captain, but he does keep his clothes sort of close-ish to his chest.

32:55So I just said, get that paddle ready, boy. You know, I want to be back. Apparently your brother said, we'll sign him, but not more than me. Yeah, that sounds about right. No, look, I knew, obviously, they were keen for me to come back. It was just how hard they were going to push and how hard other teams were going to come. So, like I said, it was, yeah, I had a feeling that they were going to come. I just didn't know how hard. And I've been a part of auctions for a fair few years now. And from my personal experience, they are so unpredictable. You know, teams will be thinking on the fly here, having to readjust.

33:33And I thought it was no different for me. So, yeah, huge results and super, super happy. so Tom stays at the Oval but plays for MI at London Tash has disappeared Owen joins us welcome along what have you made of the whole process and what have you made of like the Oval as we spoke about earlier with these two the new identity that needs to be created we're so often seeing Sam Billings lead Oval Invincibles to glory at Lords or whatever got to restart all of that sort of stuff where do you sit with building that team ethos yeah here to start with it's been a great day. Huge success, the names behind us and all of the eight teams will be happy when we're getting selected and picked up because there's a level of anxiousness that goes when you're being put through the ring and for those that went for above market value or premium price, absolutely over the moon.

34:29It's a great sign for the game and the country but also the development of the young players, particularly that come through and have opportunities to play against premium international players. When it comes to the investments and the partners that teams have partnered up with or sold 100%, sport moves on. Sport is bought and sold, teams are as well. But I think it's important that each and every team recognises an identity that has gone previously, that fans have recognised and acknowledged and respected to continue that on. We see that with MI London. London, we see it to a certain extent with the Manchester Super Giants.

35:08So I mean we all move on at different stages. I think this is one of those stages that the 100 has brought. Let's do some of the specifics then with the teams. Ravi, we're going to start with Birmingham Phoenix who pre-selected, direct signed, retained whatever. Rahehan Ahmed, Jacob Bethel, the powerful Donovan Ferreira, Jloin from Australia and And we saw Scott Curry's stock go through the roof, got up to 210 ,000. And also, Usman Tarek got a go. Yeah. He was one of the guys I was looking at for this auction. I thought, is he going to get bought? Is he not going to get bought? I'm glad he did.

35:45And I want to see him on the big stage, especially in England, on these wickets, how he performs. I think it's going to be very interesting to watch someone like that. I think they picked up a really strong side, bowling side especially. They've got the fizz. They picked up towards the end. Scott Curry as you said Saki Mahmood Usman Tariq so there's plenty of strong Woody as well Chris Wood who's experienced he's shown he's shown his skills throughout the last 15 years now in the blast so a very very good strong bowling line up in my opinion and a couple of dangerous players in there but I think just on the batting I would feel probably a little bit light on the batting and not many bankers in there in my opinion Not Bethel?

36:31Well there's one there in the middle order he'll be batting in the middle somewhere but for the rest of them I think look Ferreira's got a great record of it in a six every five balls or something in the hundred but how do you get over there you just don't bowl the fifth ball at him simple as that I don't think that's in the law I'm pleased they gave Bethel the captaincy by the way just going back to the point of what I made about the women's and lack of captaincy experience which if you play domestic county cricket that does fall on you but so I'm really pleased because England obviously see him as a future leader he's already captain in Ireland wasn't it so they gave it to him young he's not disappointed yet in anything he's done Jacob Bethel so on to London Spirit and they pre-signed to all Brevis Liam Livingston who obviously was at Birmingham the side we've just been discussing Jamie Overton Zampa is the spinner so he's come across the Thames come on give us the inside track on London Spirit what do you think how did their auction go how does that side line up for you?

37:25I would say measured. I'd say they went into the auction with a certain set of goals and parameters and values. Remember when you go into these auctions players set their baseline. It's not by pure value, by average, by wickets taken. It is a player sitting there going I think I'm worth 100 grand so I'm putting it at 100 grand. Others at 31, others at 50. So the challenge for coaches, statisticians, analytics companies is to determine that value as opposed to distinguished from the payment. I think London Spirit have done that well. They've proved that saving money for James Colts, who was incredibly popular around the room, you have to highlight that you just don't sign a player for 390.

38:10It is market value in this room and everybody in the room really, really liked him. I also like him. I also think it's quite ironic that he goes for the highest amount today when Devolt Brevis in last year's SA20 also broke a record, went for£800 ,000. There's a year between the two of them. Devolt will be 23 by the time the tournament starts. Young Coles will be 22. So a huge amount for both to learn off one another, but one, how to carry the opportunity that the big price tag brings. I was going to hold that back a bit. James Coles, what a story, 390. I mean, the room actually started gasping towards the end.

38:47He picked it. He said, this bloke's going to go for a lot. I said 330, so I got it wrong. Well, you weren't out. I said about 150, so I was a bit further out than you. 390. Leading up to this, a lot of noise about him, and rightly, because when you've seen him in other tournaments, and you've just seen him last year's 100, there'll be moments he'll be sat in the back of the pod, and someone will say, this lad can play. And if you have a gut feel for a cricketer, and just his attitude, and when you watch him, he looks quite tough as well, which you need to be in this format. So there was no surprise he was going to go for big money.

39:22So I don't think it will affect him. The only thing, obviously, I don't want to speak to you about this is Lords and playing at Lords. It can be a difficult pitch. I'm not talking about him specifically. But when you pick a side for playing at Lords, I've noticed they've got a lot of big hitters in there, you know, the likes of Livy. It's not an easy one to get timing on. It may be better to go for your big six hitters. Absolutely. And with the amount of cricket at Lourdes this year with Women's World Cup, Women's Test Match, Men's Test Match, Men's White Ball Match as well, you will be playing either side of the international dead centre.

39:57So there will be one side that is predominantly shorter. So when you look at the bowling that they've gone for, there's an incredible amount of variation with pace, left arm, leg spin, wrist spin, plenty of options to take pace off as well, Coles himself, Livingston. so they have plenty of options. One thing I'd like to say about James Coles as well, for a guy who's 21 years old, it's very rarely we talk about in the shortest format of the game somebody that has a foundation in the game. He has eight first-class hundreds, four of them came last year. So it's great to see a pedigree player getting rewarded, having spent volume of time in a short space of time but being rewarded for it in county cricket because the likes of Bethel haven't done it and been rewarded.

40:38Their final overseas signing was Andre Pretorius as well, which they picked up for 31 grand. Well, I think a lot of their budget was depleted. Because they spent 390 on Colsey. So you're saying he's not a good player? They had to pick up... No, Luandre Pretorius. No, I'm not saying he's not a good player. He's a dangerous player. He's a dangerous player, but they had to pick up someone for a budget. And that's why they went for that reason, because their budget was low. So they had to. Welsh Fire went 540 in their first two with Cox and Root, Root and Cox. And it was like, that's 55 % of our budget.

41:16A bloke with a paddle just went, oh yeah, put it down, put it down, put it down. Right, Manchester Super Giants. There's some power. There's some power with the bat there. I like this team. I really, I think they probably had the best day. They probably did the best business on the day. And it doesn't surprise me with Tom Moody there as well. He's an absolute genius when it comes to auction days. He's been involved in so many during the IPL. He knows how to build a team. He's a winner. We saw that over the last previous four or five years now, that he wins trophies, he builds good teams. And look at the powerhouse.

41:51Butler, Seifert, Markram, Deploy, Clarsen, Moores, all top players, dangerous players. They're the potential of getting big runs in the 100 balls. Yeah, Ravi just trying to get himself a Tom Moody gig somewhere down the line. What I like about them is they've picked for the venue as well. If you think historically Old Trafford, what do you need at Old Trafford historically? Wrist spin and pace. And they have got pace. They have got Tung, Baker, Atkinson. They went scrimshaw late and they've got the wrist spin of Noor Ahmed. So you've got that nicely balanced with all the hitters that Ravi talks about as well with the bat.

42:28We haven't even mentioned Dawson. Yeah, Dawson. Banker. Absolute banker with the ball. Can bowl at any stage of the game and quality batsman as well. Dangerous. On paper, I think they look the strongest. They might not win a game next year, but on paper, walking away tonight, I think they will be the happiest. When we left that first one, we said that about the Southern Brave, didn't we? When the very first auction happened. But we said the opposite of Manchester, if you remember. What on earth have they done? I think this time Manchester have done more. I think they'll lose every game now. New coach, new director.

42:59Right. Mumbai Indians London so the pre signing so there were three retained which was Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Rashid Khan they directly signed Nicholas Puran who probably could have got a lot more had he not been pre-signed but who knows they bid heavily for Tom Curran so they've got that oval sort of feel still there Alex Stewart was right on Kyron Pollard's shoulder and I think that advice was coming about the domestic players that could and would work at the Oval. I don't know if you agree or not. No, well he said in an interview halfway through, it's great to have him involved to start with, you know, vastly experienced icon of English cricket and legend of Surrey.

43:43So to have him at the table, finger on the pulse of, he sat back and watched exactly what the success of the Oval Invincibles previously has harnessed, galvanised and, you know, gelled together a huge amount of superstars which is is very difficult to do so balancing that with one eye looking at the future with the franchise of MI around the world I think they've balanced it really well how about the the just the family they come as a package Curran and Curran but you've you've got to you've got to take them out for an expensive Sunday roast though um Tom Curran apparently his birthday today so delighted for him but they have plenty of options you know even Trent Bould for instance I thought went quite cheaply but he is an MI player around the world they splashed out on James Vince which I really like very experienced his record at home is brilliant and his success in 100 is brilliant so um and one other guy can I mention Sauter yes hugely rewarding day for Nathan Sauter he's been one of the best 100 bowlers since the inauguration a reminder of blast so he was one of the leading wicket takers in blast history coming into the hundred got picked up late came in performed last year when rashid khan had to leave the tournament he actually outperformed rashid khan when he left so it's great to see nathan south to get rewarded southern brave uh pre-selected or directly signed joffa archer for 400 grand jamie smith marcus stoinis and tristan stubbs uh two i've highlighted here Nass.

45:16David Miller at 110 seems a bargain to me. And Thomas Rue in at 80 grand, he's one of the most exciting talents in the game. And it was quite quiet when his name came up and then gradually interest built. And I thought, I'm glad that one of England's young stars is going to get to get in a dressing room like that. And he got more than his brother. Talking about the Curran brothers. They're split. Split them up. Split them up. So, yeah, that was a good story. Because you do have to keep an eye on it. It's a franchise tournament But you do have to keep an eye on the future of English cricket. And the Rue brothers are, believe me, the future of English cricket.

45:52And you're right about David Miller. You know, he's just a genuine franchise six-hitter all around the world. A banker, basically. You just want in this game, you go in, in that middle order, finish it, a banker who does it time after time after time. David Miller does that. Talk about games in these auctions, Ravi. because Dan Worrell, I was thinking, well, you know, I was at the, I was at Lords when he bowled. The first 10 balls were dots, you know, I mean, when he gets it right, I know the balls might have changed, but those particular balls, he went round the park. Unsold, unsold. And then they got him for 80 grand later on.

46:25How much of that sort of gamesmanship is on? Well, actually, we're going to have to be brave here. We want him, but we're going to leave him and try and get him later for a bit less. Yeah, because you're always keeping an eye on how much you've got left in the person. You may have someone else that you want, and then his name comes out first. and you think, well, the next guy is our priority. If we can get the next guy, then we can come back to Worrell. And sometimes when they go unsold, you're almost relieved, like, thank God he's got unsold, because now we can have a look at him down the back end.

46:52But just looking at the brave side, I mean, powerhouse through the middle. Stubbs, Stoinis and Miller. I think that's some serious power there. I think they set up quite nicely. They'll surprise a few teams, in my opinion. Archer, Adil Rashid. So it's a decent bowling line-up as well. Luke Wood, Chris Jordan. So I think they'll surprise a lot of teams. There's a lot of power there as well. Sunrise as Leeds, and I'm going to start with the politics of this side and the fact that Abrah Ahmed was purchased for 190. Now, a lot of chalk before the 100 that Pakistan players weren't going to be selected, certainly from IPL-owned or associated teams.

47:29A diktat came out from ECB that you can't do that. People talk about law and all this sort of stuff. Sunrise as Leeds, an IPL-backed franchise, bought Abraham for 190 grams. It will be the headline tomorrow in most of the papers because leading up to this tournament it was all about will an IPL side sign a Pakistan they haven't done generally there's been a couple KKR have done in the past but will they sign one in the hundred they were reminded that it's for everyone and the legal ramifications of not signing it and they said we will sign on cricketing ability and I can tell you India awoke the moment that happened, Pakistan awoke, the ECB would have been absolutely thrilled with that signing and I think it's the right thing to do, you know, you sign on cricket and he's a very good cricketer, it's a brave thing to do and they'll cop a bit of flack with it back in India but you know I think you just got to pick on cricketing ability, and that's what they've done.

48:35How do they line up for you? I think they line up okay. I think they've got a very strong batting line-up. I do have questions over there. Bowling, I don't know if you agree. I mean, Abarara, for me, still untested in English conditions. So, you know, bowling in Pakistan, where he'll do the majority of his bowling. Here in England, sometimes the ball that comes out the front of the hand, where you don't get that zip off the wicket. So relying on Abra, I think, throughout the tournament could be tricky for them. I think they do line up really nice in the batting, but I think questionable over their bowling.

49:12I agree with you, Rav. It looks very samey to me. Karras, Ellis, Potts and probably Benny Howell with a bit of change, really. So they needed somebody like an Abra. They could have done with a little bit, maybe a left-armor. So they signed Rhys Topley as well, but they signed him late. So it was a bit of an afterthought. Remember, prioritisation of quality players in auctions are at a premium. So you go after your wanted players. And to start with, they went after a lot of right arm seamers. So that's a concern. I might have to go back a step actually to Southern Brave because I missed Rash. Yeah, 250 grand.

49:44250 grand for Rash. I mean, that's a massive signing. Huge. I missed that one. Huge. And again, you've got to go early. You've got to have direction, what you want. We saw Joe Root go in huge demand early. Adil Rashid we knew was going to be at a premium, but£250 ,000 for Adil Rashid is not a premium. He is at£300 ,000,£350 ,000, even more. And he proved that at this Men's World Cup. I mean, he was the best bowler in the tournament, best wrist-spin bowler in the tournament by miles. Nepal were the ones that actually tested him the most, but he proves against the best, he still is the best. So well done, Southern Brave again.

50:25Right, so my mistake because I missed out on Rash, so we're going to go to Trent Rockets. Now we don't know what the pitch is going to be like necessarily at Trent Bridge now, but we can probably hazard a guess that they're going to probably spin. So what and how have they covered that option? Obviously they pre-signed Mitch Santner for a pretty low number of 175 when you consider probably he could have got, if Abra's getting 190 or whatever it was he might have got a few more quid, but he was pre-signed. How do they line up given the conditions we'll see at Trent? My one memory of this afternoon I think will be the Trent Rockets just constantly putting their paddle up.

51:02They must have bid for nearly everyone in the room and got completely, every time virtually, they got outbid. So they kept delaying and in the end they did get a couple of spinners. They had to go right towards the end and get someone like Danny Briggs because they were looking for experience i like their batting options in in banton and duckett that's dynamic and obviously tim david in the middle order finn allen you know that is you know that is a top top signing so they have a lot of power hitting matt henry brilliant with the new ball sam billings is a good story there will he captain who else could captain satan gregory's the other one who has satan's done new zealand gregory i thought it was going to be between gregory and billings what would What would you do?

51:44If you've paid£180 ,000 for Billings, you want to hope that he's going to do more than just a glove man and bat at number six or seven. You want more from him. And I think that they will want him to captain. Good captain as well. Tasted success at the Ove. Absolutely knows how to get it done. Regardless, you can look at this squad. Again, the most exciting players are the headline acts with whatever, Alan, Tom Banton, Mitchell Santner, those types of players. but he is a very good captain he's very astute even with the gloves on he gets it on even on their worst days the oval invincibles found a way to win there was some confusion when the trip rocket side was being put together matt henry his base price was actually 100 grand which the auctioneer got right and there was some confusion so initially we thought he'd gone for an absolute steal at 75 100 grand for matt henry is is damn fine business and danny briggs they had the wrong picture of Danny Briggs and we all thought it was the fella from Top Gun we wasn't sure if he was a left arm spinner or not but anyway that's what the Trent Rockets cited finally Welsh fire and they went in with a checkbook heavy Joe Root 240 there was a bit between Leeds I thought he's going to he's surely he's going to end up at Leeds and he ends up down in Cardiff at 240 and Jordan Cox 300 now I wonder if that's light I had him similar actually to Coles in and around 300 330 just because he is an international cricketer.

53:09He's not played a great deal. He could have had opportunities. He hasn't played through injury, but he has continued to perform like an international cricketer. So you would pay him international cricket money. He's a top-order batter. He'll guarantee runs a good player of spin. But they've absolutely splashed the cash early. Joe Root, then Jordan Cox. They've even... What's allowed them to do that is retaining or pre-signing Marco Janssen, Chris Wokes. Two genuine all-rounders. that can bat 6 '7 or 5 '6, and then it allows them to either go top-heavy or bottom-heavy. They've gone top-heavy. I don't mind it at all.

53:44So in terms of the money they spent on batsmen, though, Phil Salt pre-signed for£450, Root for£240, Jordan Cox for£300. That's why I made the comparison about all this being like a fantasy football or cricket team. You pick your fantasy football team, you go, I'm going to have Harland, I'm going to have Saka, and you get to the end and you've got like£2.50 left, and you've still got eight players to pick or whatever. That's how I thought the world... Don't get lost for two pounds. You don't. You don't. So they did go in early. There's two ways of doing it. They went in early. They probably said they're the cricketers we want.

54:17And they've got them. I think Jordan Cox, the way he played last year, I think we've forgotten. It's quite an interesting story because he sort of disappeared this winter, Jordan Cox, hasn't he? And if you'd seen him in the 100 last summer, you'd have thought this lad is going to play a lot of white ball cricket for England and he hasn't yet. So I think people have just remembered rightly Jordan Cox is a serious cricketer. He is a serious cricketer. I mean, he can play in any conditions as well. He scores runs. I've seen him score runs in Sri Lanka on tough pitches. Here in England, he's beat the ball.

54:48So, I mean, he's a top cricketer. He's worth every penny. And Sophia Gardens isn't a ground where predominantly batters would go, oh, I can't wait to go and play there. So clearly they've identified, you know, you need to bat a bit deeper, possibly go a bit harder in various different stages and actually what levels out the playing field with the bowlers might be the pitch. So clear and concise. Also, I think, I mean, they paid a lot of money for Rooty and I think Rooty's going to be a big plan in some of their bowling. I think Rooty's going to do a lot of bowling this year for the Welsh Trial.

55:18Got a funny feeling just having a look at their side. Little bit weak on spin. I mean, they've got Ratch in there who will probably bowl 20 balls, but I think Rooty's going to do a lot of bowling. That was the only question. They didn't have a wrist spinner. They ended up picking up Chauhan, which is a very good, young, capable spinner, but he could have easily gone unsold the whole of today. So a bit of an afterthought and a panic. Because remember, they ran out of time here and they were supposed to nominate a player. So a little bit of panic late in the auction. Gentlemen, thank you very much indeed.

55:48It's been a busy day, a long day. That's one of the things with the auction as opposed to the draft. So the women's sides are filled, the men's sides are filled, except for two more possible wild cards at the end, the Vitality wild card. That's a little further down the line. A lot of money has been spent in some very happy players and some perhaps not so happy players. First game though is Mumbai Indians London against Sunrisers in the 100th on July 21st.
