0:09Duncan Ferguson:Welcome along. Everton's new stadium was the venue for Monday night football this week as the Toffees came up against West Ham.

0:17Jamie Carragher:Here's how the game finished.

0:24Jamie Carragher:It's a point of peace and the first West Ham United game under Nuno Espirito Santo doesn't end in defeats which is important for the Hammers the way their season has gone. It's Bowen's equaliser, the first goal conceded by Everton in a competitive game at Hill Dickinson stadium to cancel out the opener scored by Michael Keane in the first half. Frustration for Everton in the ends as they can't beat a West Ham side who were particularly good in the second half. Some smiles on West Ham faces, a hug from Nuna for Bowen who helped his side to the point. So encouraging start for West Ham in their new journey under new management and for Everton just a point at home.

1:12Jamie Carragher:Final score, Everton won, West Ham won. Seb, thank you very much. Yes, one apiece. And particularly in that second half, Jamie Carragher, something to build on for Nuno.

1:23David Jones:Yeah, I mean, it wasn't great. First half, he sent them out early. For the second half, it had the desired effect. I thought they were fantastic down that left-hand side, caused Everton real problems in the right-back, right-centre-back area. And Somerville, especially right throughout the game, really energetic cause problems but I thought Juve's second half from left back was absolutely fantastic and a huge part of play in the equalising goal as well.

1:48Jamie Carragher:Yeah very impressive performance from him yet again he has certainly caught the eye at the start of this season a real shining light for West Ham United a good performance as well from Somerville in front of him the coaching goes on from Nuno and Everton Idol Duncan Ferguson also with us Duncan what was missing from Everton?

2:09Duncan Ferguson:Stryker, Beto for me was very poor. They never seemed to be getting the final third and create any real good chances. I can't remember that Evan actually having many chances until Garner hits one late on at the goalkeeper. So they were poor up front, to be honest, although they were comfortable in the first half. I never saw where West Ham was going to get back into it. But you could just smell it in the second half. Evan started making a few defensive mistakes and then West Ham creeped into the match. and the 3rd of almost 2nd half West Ham will be feeling.

2:43Jamie Carragher:The man for West Ham again! And the first goal under Nuno! And the first by a visiting team at Hill Dickinson. So often the man for the big occasion for West Ham United. Jared Bowen strikes again to cap a much improved second-half performance for West Ham United under Nuno Espirito Santo. And we can hear from those two, Jared Bowen and Crescencio Somerville, who is the player of the match with Nathalie Gedra.

3:16Nuno Espirito Santo:Boys, well done. How pleased are you to get a point here at Hill Dickinson tonight?

3:21David Jones:Yeah, it's a big point for us. I think we had probably chances to win the game as well, but I think they had a couple of chances as well. So on reflection, probably a fair result. But, you know, it speaks a lot about the character of the team, you know, going down 1-0. And, you know, we said at halftime, it's only one goal, whether it takes us up to 90 minutes, 95 minutes. But we knew we would get our own chances and we did. And then even at the end defended well when, you know, they were pushing for a winner as we were as well. So, yeah, not a bad result.

3:48Nuno Espirito Santo:Was it especially important tonight, given the circumstances, everything that happened in the past two or three days with the change of managers, you needed to show a good sign to the fans after everything.

3:59David Jones:Yeah, I think it's always tricky when things like this happen. And I think the boys did a really good job today to focus on the game. And yeah, I'm happy with the point we took here.

4:11Nuno Espirito Santo:You were busy during the game. A lot happening, that left-hand side. So how have you been feeling? Because it seems like you and Juve and Paquetá, you've been connecting really well on that left-hand side.

4:22David Jones:Yeah, I think the team knows me and Jared on the side just give us the ball and we try our magic. So we try to do that today. And what Jared said, we we went one no down and we stayed in the game. And yeah, our guy, you know, happy with the goal. So very, very happy.

4:37Nuno Espirito Santo:Nice strike. Right.

4:38David Jones:Thank you.

4:39Nuno Espirito Santo:Yeah. No. And you there were a lot. There was a lot of things happening in the left hand side. But you were very connected to what was happening because the goal obviously came out from you. Talk us through that strike. Nice strike.

4:50David Jones:Yeah, no, I just try and get in the box and when it falls. And I feel like, you know, when I'm in the box, it's, you know, I know what I'm going to do before the, you know, the defenders do. And, you know, I think for me, it's just about hitting it towards the goal. And, you know, tonight it went in for me. So I'm really happy with that.

5:07Nuno Espirito Santo:You touched upon the character of the team and everything you guys showed tonight. What do you expect? How do you expect this team to react to another change of manager and a change of style as well? because Nuno is a different manager from Potter.

5:23David Jones:Yeah, no, like I spoke to you before the game, I think we've all been in football long enough that, you know, we know change happens. Like I said, teammates go, managers go, but, you know, we're professionals. They've been in the game long enough and, you know, we want to do well and we've got a really good group here that really want to work hard and change our fortunes that we've done. And I think you saw that tonight and, you know, we've had Nuno now for two days and, you know, I thought we put in a really good performance. So it's about time, about putting the work in, about listening to the new gaffer.

5:48David Jones:And like I said, we've got a group that wants to work, that wants to do well. So, you know, I think we're heading in the right direction. And tonight's a good start for that.

5:56Nuno Espirito Santo:How's it been these past couple of days for you guys? And what was the main message that Nuno managed to get across?

6:04David Jones:It didn't change a lot, obviously, say for two days. But, yeah, I think we enjoyed ourselves today. And, yeah, I think we're going to build on this. And we go on Saturday, you know.

6:16Nuno Espirito Santo:And finally, for you specifically, you went through such a hard time with injuries last season. How pleasing has it been for you? Of course, it's been a tough season for West Ham, but for you in particular to be showing this progress and showing so much on the pitch already.

6:31David Jones:Yeah, I'm just grateful to be back on the pitch playing. And I want to show the fans and the people what I'm capable of. And yeah, I try to do that. But I just enjoy every minute now.

6:41Nuno Espirito Santo:Well, then do the honors, Jared, player of the match.

6:44David Jones:Congratulations, brother. Thank you very much. Only deserved.

6:46Nuno Espirito Santo:Thank you, guys.

6:48Jamie Carragher:Yeah, we enjoyed watching. I'm sure West Ham fans did as well, with Geoff bombing on behind him as well. So this is what it breaks down as in terms of the match stats. 12 shots from Everton, 14 from West Ham, 6-3 on target. But that expected goals is quite significant tonight because that 0.73 from Everton represents the lowest XG number that West Ham have faced this season, which would point to an improved defensive performance or a poor effort from Everton in terms of their attack tonight. You can see it either way. He said, Nuno, before the game that he couldn't change much. He wasn't going to change much, Duncan, but it certainly looked different in that second half, didn't it?

7:34Duncan Ferguson:Yeah, he certainly said something right at half-time, didn't he? Yeah, I thought they were much better in the second half. They never looked like getting into the game in the first half, but second half they were much better. They got in the ball, they controlled possession a bit better. Everton started to get a wee bit shaky five, ten minutes in the second half, and I think West Ham smelt that. And Everton started making a few defensive mistakes. But they capitalised, didn't they? And they were really strong on the left-hand side with Juve and with Somerville on the left-hand side. That's where the attack came from.

8:00Duncan Ferguson:Bowen was quite quiet in the game, I thought, but he popped up with a bat of clash. He's their main man, isn't he? He popped up with the goals. West Ham, I think, was scoring goals. West Ham struggled to score goals in Everton tonight as well. They struggled to create any real clear-cut chances, didn't they? But West Ham, to be fair to them, I never saw it coming in the second half, but to be fair, they dug out a result.

8:21David Jones:Let's see where the goal, the equalising goal, comes from then, Jamie. Well, I mentioned before about Duf and the problems he caused Everton down that right side, in behind O 'Brien and Tarkovsky on that side. And it comes to Jordan Pickford. He goes long, actually, and it's O 'Brien almost in the right-back position. So that's your right-back, really. They use him in terms of going long, but there's a big distance now between himself and Tarkovsky. Now, he jumps for the header, I think it is, with Juve as well. And then as they land there, he's just got the head start on them. And he's never going to catch him.

8:53David Jones:He's never going to get back in that position. But what he does, the pace, is actually not going past O 'Brien. It's what he does here with Tarkovsky. Leaves him for a clean pair of heels. Brilliant crossing. I thought Michael Keane had done brilliant just to get something on him. And then he's just unfortunately involved. poor deflection for them really but as I said they go direct for it but there's just the space between the right back now and right centre back is too great and that is a blistering turn of pace Duncan.

9:24Duncan Ferguson:Yeah fantastic what a great ball, Michael Keane was fantastic in the game as well weren't he? Yeah. Just very unlucky here, got to try and keep him off his left on his strong side and his left foot there you don't want him coming back inside on that left side do you?

9:36Jamie Carragher:Whose goal is it? Is it Bowen's goal? Is it going in or does it go down as a Michael Keane own goal?

9:42Duncan Ferguson:I would have to have to say the striker. It's going on target, isn't it? It's his goal, isn't it? Definitely. It's the striker. Yeah, absolutely.

9:49David Jones:We know Michael Keane's got a great record on Monday Night Football. That would have been five. We don't want to give him five.

9:54Jamie Carragher:OK, Jared Bowen's goal then. So he's closing in on Mikael Antonio's record as the top scorer in the Premier League in West Ham history. He needs nine more to equal him. For context, he scored nine in his last 14 Premier League games. So this might not take too long. And you remember how proud Mikel Antonio was of this record? He had the cardboard cut out on the side of the pitch,

10:16David Jones:celebrating. I think that's going this season. Jared Bowen, for me, an absolute West Ham legend. You know, you've seen David Moyes come up to him at the end of the game. Yeah, that was fun. Gets the winning goal in the European final. And we were talking, actually, just because he got the goal. And you think of what he's done for the club. He's going to get that Premier League record. And we know West Ham got an unbelievable tradition in history. And you think about the boys who, obviously, in 66, won the World Cup for England, the West Ham lads. But I was thinking, certainly the Premier League, there can't be many above Jarrod Bowen when you think of what he's done.

10:46David Jones:He's going to have, obviously, the goals, he's won them a final as well. He must go down as one of the greatest players probably to ever play for the club, really. You know, you go that far, he's been a fantastic signing. I think it was David Moyes. It was a very good player.

11:00Jamie Carragher:So we were talking before the game, obviously West Ham have had this horrible start to the season. Does this change your perspective on their ability to stay away from danger this season?

11:10Duncan Ferguson:The second half performance certainly does. The first half, no. I thought they were looking good in their certainties to get relegated here. The aggression wasn't there. But in the second half, they're putting out a much better performance. They need their main man to deliver. Just where are they going to score the goals? He's going to have to score the goals. Who else is going to chip in with the goals in that team? They've created a lot of chances tonight, but he was the only one that scored. So they're going to have to rely on him a lot.

11:34Jamie Carragher:And they're going to have to sort out defending set pieces, and particularly corners as well, because this is the eighth that they have conceded already this season, which matches the entire last season.

11:43David Jones:And have they got Arsenal at the weekend? Have they got Arsenal next? I mean, set piece FC. So, you know what I mean? You've got to sort that out in the next few days, otherwise they're probably going to concede at least one against Arsenal. But, listen, I think, to be fair on this, we had a pop at West Ham. They should get up higher, be more aggressive, got problems there. But I just probably wanted to highlight a little bit more on the actual header from Michael Keane. the delivery you're someone who's obviously probably one of the best headed of a ball we've ever seen in the Premier League era the thing I found fascinating when the ball comes in it's actually almost feels like behind him in some ways

12:19Duncan Ferguson:incredible wasn't it and how he got the height for the two he jumped off his two feet didn't he normally he would be jumping off at one but he got off the two he got it behind him what a header

12:29David Jones:yeah I'll just try and take it back slowly here and you'll actually see when he actually makes contact He comes in now. I'll try and freeze it as he's making contact.

12:40Duncan Ferguson:Yeah, it's behind.

12:41David Jones:Yeah, it's almost behind. That's a brilliant header.

12:43Duncan Ferguson:You're on the penalty spot there, aren't you, really?

12:45David Jones:Yeah, he's almost taking his head back, isn't he? He used to take something off it. Fantastic. Wonderful header.

12:49Duncan Ferguson:Got the goalkeeper's positioning.

12:51David Jones:Anything on that?

12:51Duncan Ferguson:I thought about that, really. I think he could have done a wee bit better, maybe. It's above him, isn't it? But it's middle of the goal. He maybe have got his sell up there and made a save, but no, it's a great header. I think the defending could have been better, to be fair, as well.

13:05Jamie Carragher:Where does this leave Everton? I mean, it sounded like the full-time whistle there, that the fans weren't too happy with that outcome.

13:12Duncan Ferguson:Yeah, because they were winning 1-0, and you thought we were going to go in and win the game with more goals. It didn't happen in the second half. Everton have struggled. They struggled to create chances tonight. Grealish, Ndiaye, the striker.

13:28Jamie Carragher:You still didn't have a shot tonight, by the way, Jack Grealish. That's still just two from open play.

13:32Duncan Ferguson:But you need a better platform, don't you, as well? You need a striker to hold the ball up for you. Beto's good at running in behind. Something to bounce off? So you can get up the pitch. A better platform, I don't think Beto gives him that. He's good at running in behind, but both of his feet, technically, he's not there.

13:49David Jones:The three players behind the striker have done really well since the start of the season. But Dewsbury Hall, I think he was very unfortunate to get a yellow card, as he was to get one. You think it was a foul? I didn't even think it was a foul, but he was really unlucky. I think the last two yellow cards he's got, You think of the one on the Merseyside derby as well. But he's actually going to miss the game now. So what that does is actually give Tyler Dibbling an opportunity. He's the big money sign. He's obviously a young boy. Comes off the bench here tonight. But that gives him an opportunity.

14:13David Jones:Do you like what you saw with Tyler Dibbling?

14:15Duncan Ferguson:I'm not sure. Junior version of Jack. Yes, he's only 19, isn't he? So he's got a lot to come. And he'll be the future. But he'll have to get in the team as well. They paid quite a few quid for him, didn't they? Same as Barry up front. Another young guy they paid money for. so they need to play them, don't they? Get them into a rhythm. But yeah, what I see him, I quite like him.

14:36Jamie Carragher:And it's Crystal Palace. I'm beating Crystal Palace at home next Sunday which you can see live with us on Sky Sports kicking off at two o 'clock. So different nights, contrasting halves for these two. Moyes and Nuno and we'll hear from them next. The Sunday Supplement Podcast is back for the new Premier League season.

15:27Jamie Carragher:Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game. We'll win a few days for West Ham United. It sat Graham Potter on Saturday morning. Nuno Sprito Santo appointed to succeed him, took his first training session on Saturday afternoon. And this evening at Hill Dickinson, they fought back to get a point against Everton. his reaction with Natalie Gèvre.

15:55Nuno Espirito Santo:Nuno, a good point here at Hill Dickinson. What have you learned about your team tonight?

16:00Jamie Carragher:We are still learning so many things, Natalie. But like you said, it was a tough game. The reaction of the boy was good. And I think overall we compete well.

16:08Nuno Espirito Santo:What are the main positives that you can point from that performance to build on?

16:14Jamie Carragher:There are some positives, there are some things that are not so... They are negatives, but now it's about analyzing and trying to find the right solutions, how we should approach. Our message today was very clear, it's about competing as a team, being close to each other and the boys did well. I think overall is a good first game for us.

16:37Nuno Espirito Santo:I have a positive stat. The XG you guys faced tonight was the lowest so far this season, which points to a good performance defensively. So what do you put this down to?

16:50Jamie Carragher:That statistic has different readings. What I saw, I think, for example, in the goal that we can see, we should have been more aggressive, more contact, closer to Keane. But in second half, we started defending better. Everything starts from there, I think. And the team did well in that aspect. But like I said, things will come naturally. Now it's about taking the right steps forward.

17:18Nuno Espirito Santo:We've seen in your teams how strong defensively your teams can be. How is it to build this process of defending in a strong way, especially considering how many corners and crosses West Ham has conceded throughout this season?

17:34Jamie Carragher:It's too soon to say that what the boys did today, Today is too soon to have this kind of analysis, not about my team or no, it's not that. I think the team was well in defense, a lot of things that we have to improve, a lot, a lot of things. But this game is going to be the tool, the main tool for us to move forward. Now we're going to analyze, like I said, it's all about knowing the players better, trying to take the right decisions in the right moments. Everything now is very, very soon.

18:06Nuno Espirito Santo:You inherited a squad that was constructed by different managers recently in a short period of time. How do you see this process of installing your ideas and also mostly creating an identity to the team?

18:21Jamie Carragher:It's so difficult. It's so hard. It takes so much time. And our approach is simple. Day by day, the best of us. The best of us every day.

18:31Nuno Espirito Santo:Do you feel you have the profile of players to play that transitional attacking that we've seen in previous teams from you?

18:43Jamie Carragher:We are knowing each other. We are knowing each other. Maybe sometime we can identify better and have a proper answer to your question, Natalie. Now we are knowing each other. It's all about competing. Every ball matters. The message was clear. And the boys are slowly, I think, understanding that a football match is also about how we close our own goal, how many chances we can see. That's the things that we have to work on. But it's too soon to me evaluating them and them evaluating me. Three days. Three days. There's nothing in our history.

19:19Nuno Espirito Santo:Thank you, Nathalie.

19:23Jamie Carragher:I think he's happy to get his first point. tonight and it didn't look it was going to end that way at half time certainly and it is as we've said arsenal to come before the international break and maybe a bit of time to work with the team before they play uh brentford leeds newcastle burnley and bournemouth so maybe it gets a little bit more straightforward after after arsenal um what do you think is going to be his priorities in terms of the training ground work over the next week?

19:55Duncan Ferguson:Defensive work. Defending set plays. That will be his key points. Being aggressive, stopping crosses, doing all the hard work. Getting to your stop across, get your tackles and get some blocks in and being more aggressive in your own 18. He touched on the interview, which we touched on in analysis, that they weren't close enough to the attacker. They need to be more aggressive. You've got to be touched tight. And the defenders, there were enough defenders in the box, but none of them were touch tight to Michael Cain. So they'll work on that. They'll work on his defensive unit and, of course, on how he's going to counter-attack.

20:28Jamie Carragher:And maybe they can make it three years on the bounce, winning at Arsenal. It is a tough fixture on paper, but they've enjoyed good times there in recent seasons. Let's hear now from David Moyes with Nathalie Gedra.

20:40Nuno Espirito Santo:David, the team fought until the end, created a lot of good chances. So what is the overall feeling with the result but also with the performance?

20:50Jamie Carragher:Disappointed we didn't take all three points. It was a home game and it was an opportunity for us. I thought we had moments where we should have probably pushed the button a bit more and tried to get that second goal, but we couldn't quite get it and we left ourselves open quite often for counter-attacks.

21:07Nuno Espirito Santo:One-Nil can be a dangerous lead. Is it more frustrating because you did have chances before and after their goal to score the second or the third?

21:16Jamie Carragher:Yeah, I believe so. Kieran had a good chance with his head, I think, to make it 2-0 at one point. And then I thought we started the second half quite well for the first 20 minutes or so, and I thought it looked as if we could get the second goal there, it would be all important. But we never really carved out a real clear-cut chance to make sure that we could get a finish. We had one or two, a couple of good shots, a couple of good bits of play, but nothing which really made me think that we'd missed a really big chance. But, look, we had to deal with quick counterattacks tonight, in the second half especially, and it probably caused us a goal.

21:57Nuno Espirito Santo:Before we speak about their goal, what was missing to create those clear-cut chances that you mentioned? Because you created a lot of opportunities, but also what is missing in those very final decisions?

22:11Jamie Carragher:Well, probably you've said it right away, the decisions probably in the final third, can you create the right pass or the right cross, find the right opening to get a finish away, and we didn't get that tonight, I didn't think. I thought we had a lot of the ball at times, and we tried to work it into the box and find ways of scoring, but in the end we scored a good goal from a good cross, really good-headed goal, but we just couldn't find a way of getting that second goal.

22:39Nuno Espirito Santo:And what did they do well to push you guys, especially in the second half, because they looked aggressive on the ball?

22:46Jamie Carragher:West Ham have got some really, really good players, some top players. So, you know, do you think that we could come here and just roll them over is far from right. We knew it was a tough game. I know a lot of the players, I know the qualities they have. I thought they played well at times as well tonight, West Ham, and made it difficult for us. But I think we had the opportunities where we could have won the game and we didn't quite take them.

23:10Nuno Espirito Santo:Thank you, Dave.

23:11Jamie Carragher:Thank you.
