In short
Sky Sports Premier League podcast reaction to Newcastle vs Brentford (Newcastle 2-3 Brentford), focusing on Brentford’s late winner, Newcastle’s poor run, and key talking points including penalties and defensive set-pieces.
Guests/backgrounds
Izzy Christiansen and Les Ferdinand (pundits/analysts on the show). Luke Shanley interviews players and managers. Keith Andrews (Brentford head coach) and Eddie Howe (Newcastle manager) give post-match comments. Kieran Trippier and Jordan Henderson (Brentford) plus Vitaly Janelt (Brentford) are interviewed.
Key claims
Brentford deserved the win, were composed and stifled Newcastle’s rhythm, and showed “character” to respond after conceding and equalising. Newcastle’s main issue is a lack of goals and confidence; they’ve struggled to convert leads and “put games to bed.” The third goal was “poor” for Newcastle, and the handball penalty decision was harsh/controversial.
Notable examples
Sven Botman’s corner goal for Newcastle; Brentford’s equaliser header by Vitaly Janelt; Jacob Murphy handball leading to a penalty scored by Bruno Guimarães; Thiago (Thiago/Thiago Janelt context) penalty finish; Dango Watara scoring the winner to give Brentford their first win at St James’ Park in 90+ years and only their second ever there.

0:37Welcome to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. We were back at St James' Park to watch Newcastle take on Brentford on Saturday Night Football. This is how we saw things at full time.
1:03Another outstanding away day for Brentford. Their fourth Premier League win on the road in five matches away from home. And Dango Watara earning them their first win at this ground in more than 90 years. It's only their second win here ever and their second league double over Newcastle, who are absolutely devastated. Gimmarais thought he might have earned Newcastle at least a point with a goal from the penalty spot on his return to the team. But Thiago had struck for Brentford with a penalty. Vitaly Janelt had struck for them with a header. And after a good start for Newcastle when Sven Bottmann scored from a corner, it all went wrong they are shaking their heads at the end of a desperate week which has seen them lose emphatically at Anfield see them go out of the Carabao Cup and now seen them lose another match at home as it finishes here Newcastle 2 Brentford 3 boos around St James' Park at full time but there certainly will be celebrations though for Brentford because it's a huge win for Keith Andrews side it's the most points ever for Brentford after 25 Premier League games and this is just their second ever win at Newcastle.
2:40Izzy we spoke about it at the start of the show about Brentford dreaming of European places and this is proving exactly why they could have that dream. Yeah absolutely I mean I think the belief in this side it's there it's it's clear for everyone to see that Brentford go to big stadiums to big sides like Newcastle and they believe they can win and that's exactly what they've done tonight they deserve that I thought for minute one to minute 99 I thought those Brentford players the thing that stood out to me the most was the work the hard work that they put in and if you listen to any interview that Keith Andrews has done this season I can guarantee he's alluded to hard work at some point during that interview and that team run their absolute socks off for him and you can see they're getting their awards they're in a good place and they've just beaten a champions league team in newcastle united who have got some top top tier players in their side and it's a massive win for the manager you can see how happy that the brentford players are and rightly so but as it was a brilliant game of football though the game wasn't it did brentford deserve to win this yeah i think as he said from from the start they they just looked relaxed they looked composed they they didn't allow newcastle to get into any stride um they looked very very comfortable out there.
3:47Newcastle huffed and puffed but I thought defensively, Brentford were fantastic and credit to Keith and his coaching staff because I think they set out to stifle Newcastle they did it and got the result in the end of it because they didn't just defend they went out and attacked as well and got the goals What about Newcastle then? Because you heard the reaction from the fans at full time clearly not happy they were desperate for a result here they thought they might have got away with a point but then of course Brentford getting that winner Yeah, and when they got the second goal, when they got the penalty and got the second goal, I felt if there was a side that was going to go on to win it, it kind of looked like Newcastle.
4:24They were in ascendancy. Eddie made some positive from changes at half-time. And then during the game, Asula came on and caused a threat. But, you know, as I said, the goalkeeper didn't have, you know, the Brentford goalkeeper didn't have too much to do. It was probably one save from Tiao. And that was it. You know, Newcastle's front line really struggled today to have any impact in the game. Okay, so big victory then for Brentford at St. James' Park against Newcastle. Plenty of other fixtures and other results happening over the weekend. Of course, Friday night football saw Leeds beating Nottingham Forest 3-1.
4:59Earlier on today as well, Manchester United 2-0 winners against Tottenham Hotspur. Of course, Arsenal 3-0 against Sunderland. A big win for them right at the top of the table as well. Burnley against West Ham, that was a huge game in the fight against relegation as well. West Ham winning 2-0 in that game. now three points away from safety. And Chelsea with a hat-trick from Colpalma to secure all three points in that one.
5:27So having a look at the top of the table, Brentford currently in seventh. They certainly can stop dreaming about those European places as well. Arsenal currently with a very big gap at the top of the table as well. Manchester United securing that fourth spot so far. But Villa and City joint points, 47 points before. City play tomorrow.
5:49The bottom half of the table then, Newcastle stay in the bottom half in 12, 33 points at the moment but then in the relegation you can see West Ham, Burnley and Wolves but West Ham just three points away from Nottingham Forest and they will be hoping that they can keep that fight going.
6:14And the big day is almost here. Super Bowl 60 Seattle Seahawks take on New England Patriots and Sky Sports are across it all in San Francisco. What a night we have in store with superstars everywhere. The Patriots and Seahawks go head to head for Super Bowl glory. Sue and Cam Jordan take a trip to Alcatraz. This is not cool at all. A social confinement to the sky. Phoebe and Kirk Cousins go back to the future. What I find interesting is the hills of San Francisco. The brake pedal really is going to be our saving grace here. And Devin McCourty breaks down the Patriot way. 11 men working in harmony, working as one, always team, overselling.
6:57Grammy-winning global superstar Bad Bunny headlines the halftime show. And we've got all angles covered in the studio. It's Super Bowl 60. Come on. Where else would you want to be?
7:13Still lots more football to look forward to. Super Sunday tomorrow. That all starts at Brighton against Crystal Palace. One o 'clock, the coverage gets in the way. Sky Sports Premier League. And then stay with us because it's Liverpool against Manchester City. 4.30pm kickoff for that one. Also Sky Sports Premier League.
7:31And as a once-in-a-generation storm hits, former detective-turned-teacher Jackie Ellis investigates a shocking crime in her small town that stars Kelly Riley and Rafe Spall under Saltmarsh, which has a new episode every Friday on Sky Atlantic. Well, what a game we had at St. James' Park. Brentford getting those all-important three points as their dream for Europe continues on. huge celebrations at full time for Brentford but what does this all mean for Newcastle? Reaction to come next

8:44welcome back to the sky sports premier league podcast let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game
8:56Nice. Benz in another one! And Sven Botman just got the touch. Swerves it in, and it's an equaliser. As Brentford show their character again. It is a penalty.
9:18Thiago strokes it in so coolly. Ilanga drives one in. ...the final decision, it's better to kick.
9:31Gimurais marks his return. Opening here for Watara to strike and he's got it through Nick Pope and put Brentford back in front. Well a hugely entertaining game tonight at St. James' Park. You can see that from the match stats as well. Brentford securing just their second ever win at St. James' Park. Plenty of shots, not that many on target, but of course the ones that mattered will count towards Brentford. Three huge points for them tonight.
10:04And the celebrations at full time for the Brentford players. Big hugs as well from the manager and the players. Certainly enjoying that. Let's hear them from one of the goalscorers tonight, Vitaly Janelt and Jordan Henderson. They're both with Luke Shanley.
10:20Gentlemen, very well done. Jordan, just how satisfying a win was that today? Very. We knew it was a big game for us. I'm not sure, I can't remember the last time we won here. 1934, a long time. So it was a big game for us to come here and try and put on a performance and get three points and I thought the boys were outstanding again. Given the grit and determination you showed last week, what does it say about the way you won it today? Same. I think from the whole game, dug in at times, conceded early with a set-piece, which I was a little bit disappointed with. But I thought the reaction from the boys was top class, going half-time 2-1.
11:00And then we knew coming out second half it would be difficult. Send James apart in the atmosphere and they were a top team. So I thought the lads dug in really well and deservedly got the three points in the end. Does that say a lot about the mentality of this team and the way it's building throughout the season? Yeah, I think throughout the season we've grew as a team. We've grew in confidence. The work rate that goes on behind the scenes during the week and preparation for these games is huge, really. I think all we do is take what we do in training into a game and you get your rewards for that.
11:35And again, today we've got the three points, so we're delighted with it. Dali, the way the manager tried to tweak it in the second half, you got the note to try and get that across to the team. The way it was going in that second half, did you feel it was maybe you were starting to lose control or was it a case of trying to regain that control? Yeah, I think as George said, sometimes you have to dig in, especially when they come out flying second half. I think we did a great job first half, I think, to come back after 1-0 at this ground. I think it's very difficult. We showed personality, we did very well.
12:04And then obviously, as we knew, they come out flying and we lost a bit of control. But I think it was an open game after the 2-2. I think we had a lot of chance to kill the game but at the end obviously you know how it is legs tired and then just to get it over the line First goal in over a year, special? Yeah, first goal this season I can't remember, maybe I scored last season one goal Yeah, not used to it It was a great cross as well in terms of Dango, that cross and obviously scoring the winner just how good is he to play with and how special is he? Yeah, he's a special player I think he shows his quality especially left foot, right foot you don't really know if he goes left or right to be honest I think it was a corner from my side before it was very bad and I was very angry I should go back in my position I said you know what let me stay up and a brilliant course from Dango Well he is the player of the match can I trust you to hand over the award please?
12:57Of course I can Thank you very much Thank you, well done You didn't give it? Did he get the award? No chance Who decides that? I thought he was going to say it's about time he got one it's about time he got one But he doesn't know that. Come on, you've got to give him the time. Come on. Wow. Jordan Anderson, not quite keen on the play of the match, given by Alan Smith. Dango Taro got it, by the way. I'm sure he'll be very happy with that. There's so much to go through. So let's start with it, because 95 seconds into the game, Brentford felt that they deserved a penalty. What did you think? I've seen it from here, and he goes into the box.
13:35Trippier does grab his shirt, but he comes off his knee, and I don't think he gets to the second ball. But as I said earlier on, if you're the home team, I think you might get this. And so, you know, Brentford would feel very disappointed that they didn't. But the way he goes down with both his hands, perhaps the referee decides from here, you see the ball go away from him and then he goes down. But yeah, they'd be disappointed they didn't get a penalty. It was a big decision as well, Izzy, because had that been given as a penalty, it would have been a red card for Trippier as well. Yeah, and I think it set a precedent.
14:04You know, the start of the game, Newcastle, I think, throughout the whole game by their standards they were off it today and I think that opening 90 seconds where that penalty should have been given I thought it epitomised the way that Newcastle then proceeded in the game and then but then against the run of play they got the goal the opening goal Sven Botman just highlight here the way that Brentford defends only you know packed out inside the six yard box you can see here there's the back four in terms of like the the zonal markers and then the man-to-man markers and I think the key one here is Rico Henry on Sven Botman who ends up scoring the goal there's a massive height mismatch 5 '9 Rico Henry 6 '4 Sven Botman and you can just see here it packed the front area Sven Botman's got a leap on it but I'm just wondering whether Jordan Henderson here he gets a little bit isolated at the back the hindsight's a wonderful thing but I'm just wondering a step back from Jordan Henderson in this very moment could have possibly prevented that goal from Brentford's perspective that's the second goal they've conceded off a corner all season the first one was the opening game of the season so they're obviously doing something right but on that occasion I thought Newcastle they got off to a flyer they did and then they get the equaliser Brentford a brilliant header but it was also a really good cross wasn't it and here it is this ball coming in he just gets his head up and puts the ball in and the end I've just got to get his head on the end of it he said he shouldn't even have been there but he was and I'm sure he's glad he was because he gets a great header but I think the cross makes the header just got to get your head on it and it beats Pope and that's them 1-1 and then like I said it was it weren't against the runner play it was well deserved by Brentford at this stage all right so Brentford managing to get the equaliser then there was a controversial moment in the game here because Brentford got a penalty through this handball from Murphy what did you make of the situation Izzy?
15:51Well again a tar at the heart of it for Brentford you know the the creative side of it but it's what happens here in terms of the penalty decision is given Jensen arrives onto the box I personally think I don't know if we can roll it back to just when Utara lays it off to Jensen he should have hit hit it first time Jensen if we can just have a look it's coming it's coming in this moment is it coming is it coming here we go okay no anyway basically the way that Murphy then attracts himself to the ball he has to get in line with the ball to block it he has to and in that way you have to move your body and you need your arms to move your body you You know, you're moving laterally.
16:28You have to get across. We've discussed it, haven't we, Les, a lot. I agree with the fact that the arm has stopped the ball going in the back of the net. You can clearly see the ball's going to go in. Yeah. But is that an unnatural position? And that's the massive debate. Yeah. Personally, played the game. Is it a handball offense? Played the game. I don't think there's anything Jacob Murphy can do there with his arm. He's got it down. Yes, there's probably sort of a move of the arm towards the ball. but for me that is a natural position because of the movement that Murphy executes to get himself in line with the ball.
17:00And I think from the point he was making you just saw it there Jensen just takes the ball to his left so Murphy has to move to his left and as he moves his arm moves with him but he's bringing his arm in here and to say yeah I agree with Izzy yeah the arm stops the ball from going in the back of the net but I don't think it was an unnatural movement. It's bringing up a similar situation that happened a couple of weeks ago in this game between Chelsea and Crystal Palace. Kambo, with the handball there, eventually was given as a handball by VAR. KMI looked at it afterwards, they reviewed it, and they thought it shouldn't have been a penalty.
17:36I totally agree, it shouldn't have been a penalty, because I don't know what he does there. It's not like he stuck his arm out. He's right near his body. Yes, it hits his arm, but there's nothing he can do. Unless, as we spoke about earlier on, unless you're putting your hands behind your back... how much of a difference is this Izzy when you look at what happened in that game Crystal Palace Chelsea to then looking at what happened today hindsight says there's nothing different between the two incidents you look at the review and the result of what KMI said after the Chelsea Palace game that came out and said it shouldn't have been given, this is exactly the same for me I think that emergency state of defending inside the box, when you're moving your body small steps, you know you're in a low position, yes it was brilliantly dispatched yeah of course but we're going to go back to the decision and look at it and go was it an unnatural position in my opinion it's not an unnatural position I thought it was very harsh on Newcastle does the does the hand stop the ball going in the back of that yes it does but I don't think that should have been a penalty in hindsight so Igor Thiago as you saw there scoring the penalty but then the drama didn't stop there did it Les because we go into the second half and this is what happens yeah and we you know we thought Osula made the wrong decision here but then as the ball goes across I'm thinking why is Guimaraes not tapped in the back of the net should this have been a foul do you think in the build-up to it I really don't because I think it's Rico Henry's trying to stop a langer and it's actually Rico Henry that goes into the defender and then here you see him getting back and he and he clips Bruno's heels as he comes into the box here just clips his legs accidental yeah but it stops him from putting the ball in the back of the net and so for me it was a penalty for sure so penalty was given and that was uh taken by Bruno Gimaraish who was finally back in action for Newcastle as well after missing the last four games and that really lifted the spirits in St James's Park they thought that they were able to get away with a point in this game really good well taken penalty from Bruno Gimaraish but to break Newcastle hearts this is what happens for Brantford yeah and again I just think Newcastle finishing the game how they started it a little bit unorthodox defensive you can see Trippier top of the screen I don't know if we can pause it here now in this very moment you can just see Trippier he's out the screen Otara's there on Chiao's back shoulder Chiao isn't aware of where Otara is and this is Brentford in a nutshell you can actually see here as it's paused you can see Jensen he's such a smart player he knows he has a little look he can see Otara's through he just plays it and then obviously the finish is fantastic we can watch the finish but he should no way have that much space.
20:12Trippi is out of position. It's a super finish. I'll let Les go through the striking detail. I was just thinking about what you said, where you said Newcastle thought they might have got a point out of this. I think they were going for the three points. And that's why Trippi is up there. He's high, isn't he? He's expecting T.L. to come around and he doesn't. It's a great ball from Jensen. Watara does what he does. On that left foot, you knew it was going to hit the target. It was just whether Pope could save it or not. It's a great finish. and Wattara player of the match dessert for you? yeah certainly not like what John Nemson's going to go yeah we've got to be careful he's saying Janel because he's team midfielder isn't he?
20:51Janel and obviously with his with his goal and then I think his all-round performance tonight Janel I thought he was absolutely superb his work rate was just fantastic and one of the reasons why Brentford got that three points okay guys thank you very much for now lots to get through when we come back after this break we'll be focusing on what this all means for Newcastle and for Eddie Howe, another frustrating result in a difficult week.

22:39Well, not the best reaction from Newcastle fans at full time. Difficult week for Newcastle over the last couple of games as well. No win in their last five now in all competitions. That's four defeats in that time as well. If you look at their last couple of results, their fixtures to come as well, Les, what does this say about Newcastle, do you think? Yeah, going through that difficult period that you don't want to go through as a player. And you know, sort of like when you look at those stats there at the moment, and those results, sorry, you know, there's a lack of confidence in the side. You know, I was thinking about it and I'm looking at Brentford and if you contrast, you look at Brentford and you go, right, okay, at this stage last season, Wissler had 11 goals.
23:22Thiago's got 17 now. Yep, yep. Izak had 17 goals for Newcastle. They brought in Wissler, who's got one goal. Alanga has got no goals in the Premier League. The highest goal scorer is the Gimaraes at nine goals. Voltemada's got six. A lack of goals. And, you know, we see when you're looking at the 2-0 away from home, you know, there's three games here, four games where they haven't scored a goal. So that's the biggest problem for Newcastle. And you can see that today. You know, a lack of confidence, a lack of, you know, the fact that he's made the changes that he made at half-time, took two forward players off, put two forward players on, and then brought another forward.
24:02That's where they're lacking at the moment. You know, defensively, they were great last season. leaking goals but they're not scoring goals and that's the biggest problem for Newcastle. The Newcastle players and the manager Eddie Howe as well still in the dressing room so we're waiting for reaction to see what Eddie Howe has to say after that performance but when you look Izzy at the competitions that they've been in this season at Newcastle it is obvious that they've had a really busy fixture schedule do you think that has affected performances then? I think without a doubt and there's twofold with that you look at it from a head coach's perspective Eddie Howe and his coaching staff and the time he's getting with his players to rectify these little tweaks these little issues he's not necessarily getting on the training pitch you know where the players are active you know you do a lot of walkthroughs you know a lot of your training is done in the analysis room and it's very hard in that way to get your messages across the players but this doesn't make a good viewing for Newcastle fans you know bottom half of the table you know their form their record is not great at all and also the other thing is that kind of push last season to qualify for Europe.
25:04The trophies they've won under Eddie Howe, that surge they've had into European football, but they're just paying the price for it right now. And it's sometimes a case of careful what you wish for. But I think St James' Park, Eddie Howe as a manager, the players they've got in their squad, to me, they've got such a strong squad and I just think they're in a very, very bad patch at the moment. OK, well, we can get some reaction from Newcastle now. Kieran Trippier is with Luke Shanley. Kieran, how tough was that to take today? Raritov there's no denying that we'll start the game we'll go 1-0 up and again just disappointed with the goals that we conceded especially at home over the past couple of years we've been a real force at home but like I said the other day we can't put our heads down the reality is we've got another big game in the midweek but it's tough to take of course you're getting into winning positions or at least looking like you could have got a point is that even more frustrating that it's not the first time that you've lost leads or not been able to come out with something?
26:04100 % I think the games that we've had as you just mentioned we've took the lead and it's about putting more pressure and maintaining and keep putting pressure on and getting that second goal but we're going through a tough spell at the moment we're not denying that but again we've got another game midweek we just need to refresh we just need to get our heads down and another big game midweek In terms of the senior players how do you try and keep the confidence high because understandably it would be dented when you see the run results in a tough run of games. It's my responsibility, like Bernie, the senior players, to calm things down in the dressing room, lead by example, because myself, I've been in this position many times in my career as other players in the dressing room, the senior players.
26:50So it's my responsibility as well to help the players because it's a demanding season, there's a lot of games, so I take full responsibility as a senior player in the dressing room. Just finally, what do you say to those a bit frustrated with the run towards the players, towards the manager in terms of going forward? First I want to say it's nothing about the manager. We take responsibility for the performances. The manager puts their plan out, we try and execute it so I'm not going down that route about the manager. I'd never do that. It's those players who need to take responsibility on the pitch.

27:23now we have to regroup and you know put performances in when you start winning games for ourselves most importantly and the supporters and the club and for the manager most importantly as well Appreciate your time Thank you very much Well Kieran Trippier saying there that the responsibility lies with the players how much of the responsibility does lie with the players do you think Les and how much is it with the manager? Yeah I think you know the booing at the end of the game I think it doesn't matter where you go now half time if you're losing and you're at home and at the end of the game if you lose the crowd boot it's just it's just the the situation we're in right now with football if you're losing at halftime we're at the end of the game so I wouldn't take take that on board too much you know I mean okay they've gone through a bad run of results but he's right the players will take responsibility for it yeah the manager puts them out and the manager makes decisions sometimes someone thinks they should be playing when they shouldn't be playing and vice versa but you know as a collective um the manager never comes out and says it's all about me he always includes the players and I think the players vice versa it's not just the players it's the manager as well so as a collective you want to get things right so I agree with what he said we as players they'll never put it on the manager they'll just look at themselves and see how they can improve their performances This will feel really bad for Newcastle at the moment but there certainly were positives to take in this game lots of good chances as well is it?
28:42Yeah and I think the Newcastle fans Newcastle side the expectation is you know the high energy team you know offensive team they want to score a lot of goals and they did have chances in the game this one early on it was Harvey Barnes with that little sort of snapshot I mean if that goes in the back of the net early you know it could have been a different story but I think the general kind of feeling was they were flat but still they're going to create and this is the Wisser chance here it would have been absolutely you know brilliant for him to get off the mark but it was cleared off the line the very last second there and that was the that was probably the biggest chance that Whitter saw in the game and then there's the Chow chances coming up and he just here just steps in, takes the authority himself brilliant strike, catches it really well, better angle from here and I think Kelleher does well to tip this round the post super save but I think on the whole I think the way that this is probably one of the best ones as well and this one again falls to your centre back you want your centre forward but it was a good little bit of initiative taken by Lewis Hall in that kind of quick free kick moment and it falls to Chow and you don't want Chow in there, do you like?
29:44And that's exactly what we're talking about. You know, you see those four chances and when confidence is high and things are going well, one of them end up in the back of the net, you know, or two of them end up in the back of the net. They're just going through that period at the moment where things are just going the wrong side of the post for them. OK, well, chances for Newcastle, but not quite taken in this game because it was Brentford who were able to come away with all three points, really important points as well. When we come back, we'll get the reaction from both managers We'll see you in a moment.
30:41So, if you love boxing, join me on Toe to Toe, wherever you listen to your podcasts. That's Toe to Toe, a Sky Sports podcast.
30:54This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get more analysis of the game and return to the studio.
31:04So it was another defeat for Newcastle in what has been a pretty frustrating couple of performances for Eddie Howe. Let's hear from him now. He's with Luke Shanley. Eddie, what's your overriding emotion after that today? Yeah, massive disappointment. I think it was hard work for us out there today. It was the type of game that we probably thought it would be. Two physical teams going at each other. And at 2-2, I thought we were in the ascendancy and we'd go on and win the game. But yeah, the third goal is a bad one from our viewpoint. Does that make it more frustrating? You get ahead and then you get level.
31:37You're unable to take it on. Yeah, definitely. I think there's been a feature of some of our performances this season when we've been leading. We haven't really gone with the conviction to put the game to bed. There was a couple of moments possibly where we could have made it 2-0. We didn't. We then conceded two goals and we have to do it the hard way again. I thought we were going to, to be honest. I thought we were going to go on and win the game, as you say, from 2-2. But the third goal is really poor from our perspective. We're really disappointed with it. And, yeah, we just have to deal with it.
32:04How key was it at halftime to make the changes? Because obviously you lose that penalty and maybe get your view on that as well. but was it important to try and find your feet again in the second half? Yeah, we thought we needed a different viewpoint, a different spark. So we made the double switch, I thought we were better for it. I felt we had a bit more attacking threat. And yeah, bar the goals, I don't think, difficult to say, but bar the goals, I don't think we defended too badly in the game. But they were always in it with their transitions. I thought they had, Tara played very well and Thiago's a threat physically.
32:36So they were always in the game, but I felt we were managing them and that's where the third goal coming out of the blue like it did certainly set us back and then we probably lost a little bit of belief at that stage. Just for housekeeping on that penalty with Jacob Murphy in the handball, thoughts? Yeah, I have seen it. I think it's one of those. He's not raised his arm. I don't think it's too far away from his body. I think it's harsh on him, but I think if I was the other way around, I'd be wanting the penalty as well. So I think it's one of those that could have gone either way. It's gone against us.
33:06We spoke before the game about trying to get that complete performance Does that add to the frustration where again there were elements today which were good But it's putting together the 90 minutes? Yeah of course but I think we pride ourselves on finding ways to win And we have done historically and at the moment we're not So it's a huge frustration for us I think we're battling, we're fighting The players are 100 % trying I don't think we're playing at our best It is fragmented, there are mistakes And at the moment we're on the wrong end of any mistake it's costing us and it's something we've got to rectify quickly.
33:37There's mitigating circumstances, but what does this do for the confidence when you're on a run like this and the manner in terms of the difficult games and a lot away from home? Yeah, it's damaging. I think it's damaging from our psychology. I don't think there's any getting away from that. There's only one way to solve it and that's to dig out a win from somewhere and then you can totally flip the feeling in one match. I think that's what we've got to try and do. Away from home, the bigger the challenge, we've got to try and rise to it. Of course, the fans get a bit frustrated. What do you say to them to make sure they're all behind you and the rest of the team when you're on a run like this?
34:11I thought the crowd, considering today, I thought we were really, really good. We haven't performed as we want to consistently this season. I think they've backed us and supported us and tried to stay with us. I think they tried to stay with us today. I've got no issue with anything that they delivered for us. It's up to us to deliver better. It is another tough run as well now. What is going to be key now going into a lot of away games? Character. resilience, spirit, fight, all those key characteristics are what we need at the moment. Do you feel like the team's got it just now or is it a case of you trying to help them re-find that?
34:45No, I think the individual players have got that fight and that spirit. That's why we're in the positions that we are in terms of the competitions we're fighting in. But yeah, reminders and healthy reminders, I think are a really good thing and we need to get back to basics. We can't keep conceding the goals that we are. Appreciate your time. Thank you. a really damaging assessment actually from sorry a really honest assessment there from Eddie Howe who says it's very damaging for the confidence I suppose of the players when you go on a run like this they're 12th at the moment in the table what do you think though the reaction will be from the fans in terms of Eddie Howe is it even fair that people would be questioning him do you think?
35:24No I don't think the crowd will be questioning it will be one or two fans that will say right like, you know, maybe we need to change and all, because that happens at every football club that you're at. But, you know, he's done such a fantastic job there, and they're just going for a bit of a run at the moment. We all know they're going for a run that is not great. And as he said, they've got to try and dig something out. I mean, last season, they were absolutely fantastic. Away from home, they've struggled this season, and, you know, the next few games are away from home, so they have to find something.
35:51And, you know, we always want to see them play with this flair, but it might just be an ugly win that they need to get. And once you get that win, it lifts confidence. And that's what they're searching for at the moment. He did sound down in that interview. However, you mentioned it before, Les, about everything that Newcastle have achieved in their time, especially under Eddie Howe as well. How much do you see from players when you're in a situation like this where you really need them to get back and find that resilience, find that fight again? Well, firstly, listening to Eddie Howe there, personally, I don't think I've ever listened to a manager in the situation that Eddie Howe's in speak any better than Eddie Howe just did there.
36:26I thought he was honest, truthful, pragmatic, correct in what he said. And I don't think you can find a better manager for Newcastle United than Eddie Howe. I think we've been so much praise lauded on him and his managerial style and what he's done with that Newcastle side. And there's no point denying that they're in a rough patch at the moment. And if you think back to the summer, the players they lost and the fact that they were operating without a sporting director in terms of recruiting, replacing those players. the players that came in came in very very late in the window which then meant Eddie Howe's ability to then embed them within the side was limited then there's been injuries and he's just struggled to find that kind of rapport and connection and it's part of his coaching evolution I suppose in terms of finding a way to get this team back on track and me and Les were speaking off air around like the different profiles of strikers for example Volta Marder coming in and Johan Visser and Anthony Gordon's played down the middle at times for Newcastle this season and they're just struggling to find that connection but what remains the same is the fan connection and what the fans want to see which is a high energy high high level attacking team that's relentless in the way they attack teams and they're also solid at the back and Eddie Howe alluded to it there in his interview he spoke about you know their performances are fragmented and he can see that it's very uncharacteristic but I just believe that Eddie Howe will turn it around I really do because I think he's such a top top coach.
37:46There were some quotes though from the Newcastle CEO that we saw before the Manchester City game in the Carabao Cup from David Hopkinson. What did you make of this? Could this be a help or a hindrance, do you think, for Newcastle? No, I think because Eddie will be talking to him and all the people at the club and they know the direction they want to take the club in. I mean, they've been hindered by financial fair play and what they can spend. And I think because of the level of the ownership that came into Newcastle, everyone was expecting them to go crazy and spend loads of money. Unfortunately, they can't and they have to do it in an organised way.
38:18but as he says there by 2030 we'll be consistent and I just hope you know I joked with Izzy earlier on I said where it says wood to chop I hope it's not the manager's neck that's being chopped because I think he's done such a great job that he deserves the opportunity to take this club forward Is this realistic of an aim do you think for Newcastle Izzy? Well first I like it because I think it's showing support you know for Eddie Howe and the club and the ambition that they have and that you know we're still here and I think in terms of realism I think there needs to be another push there needs to be a big big recruitment push I would say in the summer for Newcastle because that's only four years away and we know that football you know it can take a long time to get into where you want to be if Newcastle want to be competing for the top prizes what they've been doing in the last few years is they've been getting into that stage where they have competed and they have won they won a major trophy sorry the Cowbell Cup and in terms of that now they're in the Champions League, they want to compete in the Champions League.
39:18To sustain your Premier League charge, you need a squad that's deep enough to be able to withstand the fixtures that they have, which is playing every three to four days at present. And it's proving to be really difficult for Eddie Howe to manage that. And I think one important point that Izzy made was what Eddie Howe does with his squad, and I think most managers like to do it, is if he's got all his squad in place by the start of pre-season, because that's where all your work is done. When you get to the season like this, there's no chance to train. It's just you're going, you're walking through things, you're warming up, you're warming down, and then you're playing in games.
39:51So you never get a chance to work on the training field to do the things that you want to do. So the players that he's brought in, he's not been able to embed them in the side in a way that he probably would have wanted to. OK, so not the night that Newcastle would have wanted, but it certainly was the night that Brentford wanted and Keith Andrews. Let's hear from him now. He's with Luke Shanley. Keith well done how did you assess that win today? Yeah difficult to put it all into perspective I suppose there was a lot happening in the game clearly a lot of drama a lot of decisions going one way or another I think the underlying feel at the moment is just immense pride in the performance levels the character whatever was thrown at us tonight I thought we dealt with it really really well and played a game that was needed coming to a place like this.
40:42You mentioned that word character, also mentality. It was on show last weekend. Does that again come to the fore today? Yeah, I think it has to. When you come here, you know what type of game it's going to be when the crowd get going. The way they play the game, the speed that they have, the transitional threat, the individual quality that they undoubtedly possess. You have to be on your game. You've got to show personality with the ball. You've got to show bravery with the ball. without the ball in terms of how you really get after them. Adapt in game, make big decisions in game for the players.
41:14I constantly happen to make little decisions and big decisions. And I thought they did that so well. And like I said, whatever was thrown at us, going a goal down, again getting ahead, penalty decision, 2-2 to then go again, which I wanted us to. I didn't want us to settle for a draw. I wanted us to push. And thankfully, we were able to get the winner. You mentioned adapt in game. How key was that at times where you had to maybe dig in when it was 2-2? Yeah, it was vital, really, because the waves were coming. We couldn't quite get there with the press. They were controlling little parts of the game where we couldn't quite get there and stop them.
41:52They changed their system. The game went a little bit more direct. Guimaraes was getting on the ball to an alley. Good players, obviously. But I just thought we stuck at it. We were concentrating on transitions even during that spell. And then I thought we got a decent grip at the game. look quite dangerous, look quite controlled. And ultimately, I feel over the last two games, coming to really two different football clubs, two different styles, two very good sides, I felt we were really calm throughout the game, regardless of what was trying on us, and that's a really pleasing thing. You needed that calmness, because there were a couple of decisions in the game.
42:26The penalty that went against you to make it 2-2, what was your thoughts on that? Purposely having watched it back. I know that won't be music to your ears. people watching but I don't feel it's about that quite quite consistent in my views around the officials that they have a very difficult job on their hands some decisions will go for you some will go against so I don't know is the honest answer I think there was a little bit of talk of a foul in the build up to the penalty but yeah listen I don't want that to be the overriding talk around the game Most points after 25 Premier League games just how special is this season developing into?
43:06It's a special group. I said that from day one pretty much to them and it came from a very genuine place about how I felt about the players, having known them, known their qualities as people, known their capabilities as players and the staff that were attached to it. And I think basically what we've done is we've grown from strength to strength as the season's gone on and I love seeing the development and the evolution of the team. Well done tonight. Thanks, Luke. All the best, Keith. Well, when you look at the points for Brentford, currently seventh, but they are joint on points with Liverpool as well, 39 points.
43:40And we keep talking about this European dream for Brentford. But when you think, Izzy, about the players that they lost in the summer, of course, a new manager coming in. How good of a job has Keith Andrews done here at Brentford? The fact when you look at where they are in the table as well. Yeah, it's honestly a terrific job that Keith Andrews has done, taking the Brentford baton from Thomas Frank and progressing and he spoke there about evolution of the team. And I just think at the start of the season, there was a little bit of, when he was appointed as Thomas Frank's success, there was a bit of, oh, you know, sort of really kind of thing.
44:13And, you know, I think he knew that as well. And I think that probably gave him that impetus to go, I'm going to prove everybody wrong. And I think he's jumped over that hurdle very quickly. And now he's become a very seriously good Premier League manager in terms of what he's done with Brentford this season already. He's beaten top sides. you know he's staying in games you can see the way they're coached Alan Smith alluded to it a lot during the commentary of the game we've just watched about how well coached they are um and you can see it they were all over Newcastle in every area of the pitch like a rash and in terms of you know they're up to the ball they were moving Newcastle backwards they know that Newcastle want to play front foot football they just stifled their strengths and I'm sure their game plan will change for their next opponent because and that's Macclesfield in the FA Cup yeah so I think that's a you know it's just a sign of how well he's done and yeah I think there's more to come from them as well.
45:02How much do you admire the way that Brentford have brought Keith Andrews in as manager of course started off as a set piece coach bringing him through as a head coach now? Yeah no I you know you've got to take your hats off to what they do at Brentford because in terms of the players that they find and the managers you know when Thomas Frank went in I think that everyone was doubting him as well they didn't think he would do as good a job as he did and And then obviously when Keefe's gone in, everyone was a bit sceptical and everyone was like, well, you know, how does he take them? Especially with the players that they lost in the summer as well.
45:32But he's just seamlessly gone in there. And not only has he done well, he's improved this Brentford side. You know, the football that they're playing and the way they adapt to the different teams. I think he's more than just gone in there. He's improved this Brentford side and he's getting better and better all the time. And well played today, well played to him this season. He said about how happy he was with how calm they kept it on the pitch today as well. that is something that they're going to need, especially when they're playing a game against Arsenal. You look at the next couple of fixtures, but that next game, Arsenal is going to be a big one for them.
46:01But they'll go into it full of confidence. Yeah, I was thinking ahead to Macclesfield. You're so excited because that's where you're from. Yeah, that's my hometown, obviously. I think Macclesfield will do some damage there. But no, of course, you know, Keith Andrews will be, you know, they've watched a lot of footage of Arsenal and everybody knows the way they want to play. And it'll go into that game with belief. And, you know, with Arsenal's, you know, games of late, People saw the Leeds United game last weekend as a potential stumbling block for Mikel Arteta's side. And then the game today against Sunderland and they've jumped over them.
46:29And I'm just thinking the same against Brentford. It could be a thorn in Arsenal step in terms of their title quest because of the way that Brentford are playing. It's just, you know, they're a joy to watch the way they're coached, the way the players apply themselves. They're on a flyer at the moment. OK, Les, Izzy, thank you very much for tonight. Well, plenty more to come over on Sky Sports. It's a huge weekend to come as well in the big weekend tomorrow.
