0:25Arsenal launch with a win. A win on the ground where for them wins have always meant plenty. They had to dig for it. Boy, they had to dig. Riccardo Calafiore was the improbable scorer of their only goal from right on the line from a mischievous Declan Rice corner, discomforting one goalkeeper on a day when the other David Raya excelled with certainly one maybe two really outstanding saves. United had plenty going for them positively, Cunha was good and Bermot was good, Szczesko got the last 25 minutes or so and might be a weapon in weeks to come but Gary ultimately Arsenal came for their win here and it is another Arsenal 1-0 win yeah they really dug in as you say Peter a lot of resilience we know how good they are defensively the goalkeeper made a couple of great saves the back four got better as the game went on they were never at the best Arsenal but to come here to Manchester whether it's been to Old Trafford or to Old Trafford or Manchester City's ground it's always tough and to get three points is a big one for Mikel Arteta there's a lot of United players there looking dejected and they're all on the floor but I actually think if they keep up this level of performance which is the big question they'll actually win a lot of points this season because I think there were quite a few decent things out there but Arsenal just very strong and that set piece in the first half was the big difference in the game but there were points of difference to appreciate around Manchester United Brian and Bermot certainly one of those all of which eclipsed by a moment when Riccardo Calafiore who started at left back for Arsenal got up and in front of goal made good and so Arsenal at Old Trafford have indeed made good, they love to win here and again by a single goal that is, Dave, just what they have done in the sunshine at Old Trafford it's Manchester United 0 Arsenal 1
2:34Daniel Sturridge:Away victory for Mikel Arteta on this first weekend of the season what was it that got them over the line, Micah? I think it was just them being resilient i don't think they're not the best at all throughout the game i think big characters big performances from center half goalkeeper was very good as well um i think lucky long term we're talking about the first game of the season but arsenal looked a little bit leggy didn't look sharp um so there's positive measures to take but all in all i called it one no before the game i I think they'll be at the actual best today. But to get a win in the first game away from home...
3:13Daniel Sturridge:Great. Is that one of those days, Daniel, if it's not working for you as an attacking outlet, that you just have to make sure you keep a clean sheet? And yes, you rely on your goalkeeper at times. Yeah, they were working their socks off there, banging out of the knocking on the door, and the goalkeeper was answering. But when you look at the defensive framework of Arsenal, they were a little bit more open today than I've seen them. To be fair, I didn't feel like they were at their best at all. This isn't the Arsenal last season and the season before that. Of course, we're a lot better defensively, but we are early in the season.
3:49Daniel Sturridge:It's the first game, so I won't take much from that. I imagine they'll improve as the season goes on. We can hear now from a couple of members of that Arsenal defensive unit. They're speaking live with Patrick Davison. Well, David, to fight for a title, to win a title, as you hope to do. You have to show lots of different faces, I guess, through a season. Was today a day where you showed fight, resilience, character to get the three points? I think so. I think when the quality wasn't there, we went in our best day with the ball. Defensively, we went in our best, so that was our fight. We got our goal in the first half with a corner, and from there we just fought until the end.
4:30And credit to the boys that in the end we kept a clean sheet. We know we could have lost the game but football is like this and days like these days that's when the three points count. Let's bring in the goalscorer, Riccardo we know that you brilliant team at set pieces and it looked like a new routine so a lot of hard work in pre-season working on your corners. Yeah, like always we're working a lot on set pieces and I think we showed it today. Every season I think we have to improve if possible and yeah we have to keep going like that. How pleased were you even to get the start today? Because you had great moments last season, but it was a bit stop start.
5:08And an example of the depth you've got in this Arsenal squad is those full-back positions where you've got such strong competition. Yeah, I mean, if we want to compete at a higher level, we have to be good in every position. Of course, my teammates are ready to play. So it's not easy to play every game. But, of course, this concurrence that we have inside is going to help us and it's going to bring up the level. So we just have to keep going. And hopefully I'm going to play a lot. But if not, there is another teammate who's going to play with me and it's going to be even better. David, I feel like you always play well here.
5:42You certainly did last season. Pick of the saves today, maybe that one from Cunha first half. That one from Cunha, I think. It was a tough one. I don't know how I saved it, to be honest. It was very, very close to my feet. But no, delighted to have the team to get the three points. And that's the main thing. OK, well, well done. You're the player of the match. Thank you. Ricardo, do the honours for us.
6:06Daniel Sturridge:1-0 to the Arsenal. How often we have heard that in recent seasons under Mikel Arteta. They got the job done enough, that early goal here at Old Trafford. Roy Keane, how significant do you think that victory is? It's an important start for them. With the other teams doing so well over the weekend, wasn't great the second half. I thought you lacked quality, particularly from Arsenal's point of view. but you take a win on the first day of the season and you move on obviously a home game next week to Leeds they'll fancy themselves in that match but overall I think the game was poor second half the expectations that you neither know is so low that even when Gary was talking to commentary everyone's even comfortable with 1-0 defeat you know you've got to do better again does that trouble you?
6:47it does worry me yeah even there was obviously the couple of the new signings a lot of encouragement with that they're getting you up to pitch and there's a bit more power you think obviously results will improve it's always tough against Arsenal but again no goal and not a defeat first day of the season so yeah still problems over the United and then we see it obviously with the goal terms of set piece physicality determination to get a result your goalkeeper really not doing well enough not being strong enough so yeah there's still there's still that worry I had it before the match encouragement from somebody attacking players but what was your main worry before the game I suppose what we saw again not for all the bit of encouragement hitting the posts and keep them making saves not you never felt United two or three goals in them and even ask to get into one goal obviously have asked and I think that that's a worry when I see what ask we're doing you wonder why I asked another just coming up short because they're still happy enough to kind of sit in at 1-0 and then you go is that the reason you drew so many games last year you know for comparing them to a Man City or a Liverpool they're always thinking let's go and get the second goal that's even on a bad day with Liverpool you think that's what two or three goals so that's the challenge for Arsenal but for The first day of the season, obviously their sharpness will improve.
7:58Saka, Odegaard, Rice, I think there's a lot more to come from them. But of course you take a win on the first day of the season and a clean sheet. United had their moments, didn't they?
8:05Daniel Sturridge:But did you ever feel that Arsenal were vulnerable or they were going to concede? Yeah, I did. And Bermuda was in some great positions. And, you know, if you're thinking he makes the perfect connection on the ball, it's a goal. You know, the keeper made some good saves. they showed a different side to Arsenal that we haven't seen which is that they were a lot more open in those central areas they found a lot of joy down the right-hand side with Mbamo especially in the first half and I think all in all Man United's attack will go away thinking to themselves on another day I could have left scoring one or two today that's how I would have felt certainly if I was in Mbamo I'd be going to bed thinking wow I should have left with one today So I think they're going to take confidence from their performance, Man United.
8:51Daniel Sturridge:But in the end, the result's all that matters. And Arsenal will leave going to London, buzzing with themselves, saying, look, we didn't perform to our best today, but we're going on with the three points. As you said, Mikey, before the game, if your ultimate goal is to win the title, you have to win here. Yeah, and they won it. And it wasn't pretty at times, as the guys have said. But it's how much you can dig deep. And I think with Arsenal, what's helped them? sort of staying the fight for the title of the previous seasons. When they get into that low block, they're very difficult to break down.
9:23Adding the set pieces and they're a good side, I would just like to see them be a little bit more brave. And I'm not just talking about today, I'm talking about previous games as well. But how to start a season, to come to Old Trafford and get the three points, you can't ask for much more than that, especially when your players are not fit at this moment in time.
9:43Daniel Sturridge:And probably predictable, the source of the goal, because we know Arsenal are so good from set pieces, and here they were, their first corner of this new season, and you saw Manchester United in disarray trying to deal with it. Yeah, again, good delivery. We know Arsenal are big and strong, and they vary it. If you stop it where it goes, where the ball ends up, the goalkeeper, that's your keeper's job. So for all the blocking and the advantage, the goalkeeper, that's his area. he has to be he has to come with violence he's got to be aggressive he's got to be almost saying to players yeah come in here come here I'm happy to deal with it you've got to be aggressive but look he's just he's not he's not strong enough you agree Daniel he can do more there look he's appealing to the referee don't be appealing to the referee so Fleds look he's on his heels if a player comes into your area you go yeah you come in you invite him because I'm going to I'm going to hopefully punch the ball and I'll take you with it far too easy it's like you wouldn't see a kind of it's like schoolboy stuff we've seen it before from Hampton last season against Spurs in the Carabao Cup so the warning was there that's part of the goalkeeper's job we talk about shot stopping but that's about taking command of your area and also letting your own defenders know lads if it does come into this area where it came into first of all I've got it I've got it listen if something else happens to that we react to it but if that comes into me I am favour for it I am going to be favour he's what 6 '2 6 '3 and he ends up on his heels and he's getting bullied why don't you bully the other lads Why don't you come and punch it and go, if you come near me, listen, I'll take your head off as well, there's no problem.
11:16But they're all a bit, referee, don't look at the referee, take control of it. It's like a weakness to it, physically and mentally. And especially on an inswinger, you must know that when it's an inswinger, it'll always be coming towards me. Outswing is slightly different, you think, well, I want to be careful, I don't want to be drawn out to it and getting dragged into bodies. But when it's coming in on top of you, people go, hey, happy days.
11:38Daniel Sturridge:By contrast, did we see, through David Raya, the example of that positive goalkeeper who's going to make sure it doesn't cause him problems because he's going to deal with it. Yeah, I mean, the conviction in it is there, his experience and confidence. Similar situation, isn't it, really? But if you look on there, who's he got defending a little bit more? He's got Gabriel, where on the other side, it was Mount. So if you look at the balance between Saliba and Mount at the time, he's getting ragdolled everywhere. I just thought Dalit could have come inside and Mount could have gone outside. But in terms of the goalkeeper making that decisive decision, it was a really good punch.
12:14But if we just look here... Mount and Saliba, it's difficult. I agree with Roy, Bender should have done a lot better. Saliba doesn't do much more. Saliba's not even... Look at the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper's not even aware of him. The goalkeeper's on his heels and now he starts moving. and he should be on his toes bouncing going, I know you're going to come in here and be a nuisance. So he was doing very little to him. Do you know what he's doing? No, but he's leaning. He's actually, he's only leaning into him. The job of that player in that role there is to protect the goalkeeper so he can come and punch it.
12:50There's a lot of chaos going on within that. This is big. This is big, boys. But you've got to delay. There's going to be a mismatch. If your team, if they've got players, There's a lot more players bigger than your, Latch. You're going to be outmatched somewhere. But not in the centre of the goal. But if it comes there... It's come to the centre... But he's only leaning to... But that's the goalkeeper. You can't babysit a goalkeeper. I agree with you that the goalkeeper should definitely do better. But I also believe... The last player you want in there is a lot more.
13:18Daniel Sturridge:Is that, my character, a little bit to do with the smartness of Arsenal's routine that they sort of eliminate Manchester United's best aerial defenders in that situation? Why I believe De Ligt was at the far point, Palace, because Arsenal sometimes have all the players start at the front and then go to the back, show they must have thought the ball was going to the back post. That was the reason I believe De Ligt was there. But unfortunately, Rice, we've not talked about Rice's delivery. It's on a sixpence. Absolutely brilliant where it's in the centre of the goal and that's where you want your strong centre-half to be to help out the goalkeeper.
13:54Daniel Sturridge:You say that, right? But they've got Casemiro, the big defensive midfielder, and Jorowell lose another centre-half. I totally agree with De Ligt being at the back post. Are there best markers on people? Only the manager knows that. What I will say is I've done the role of Saliba in this situation and it does seem as if he is getting the better of Mount, but I'm not going to say it's Mount's fault because in the end, when you're on the football pitch, right, what do you want? You want one thing, it's your goalkeeper to come and clear everybody out. Any question that he's fouled there? No. I wouldn't say so.
14:33I don't know, he should go and play chess then, shouldn't he? Come on. The players you want to impress the most when you're a footballer, you're not about supporters or the... There's your teammates. Your teammates want to be able to look at your goalkeeper going, if it does come into this neck of the woods, what would it be a Schmeichel or all the top goalkeepers going, he's fine, I think he'd be OK. But instead of us going, I'll block him, I'll block... He's only leaning into him. they must do obviously they go through their own set pieces we saw before the game and if a goalkeeper can't deal with that part of the game well you are in trouble because we know the importance of set pieces we saw first in their first goal today set pieces are deciding huge games we saw the stats from Arsenal that's one of the reasons they're competing so well at the top of the table just alone from their set pieces so if you're a goalkeeper before the game if they're doing their chats this morning the last few days and you're going through what you have to sort out and you said to your goalkeeper if that comes in here your goalkeeper coach would be saying to you, that's on you.
15:28And he's not dealing with it. So it's on him.
15:31Daniel Sturridge:Let's bring in more reaction. Bruno Fernandes is with Patrick Davison. Well, Bruno, of course, the result isn't what you wanted, but in terms of the performance, was that a step forward? No, it's the first game of the season, so we can't speak about step forwards. He's the first one. So I think we made what was was asked during the season. We did a lot of good things, but obviously it wasn't enough. We conceded a goal from a set pieces in the first half, and I think from there on Arsenal didn't have any good chances. They didn't create any good chances. We were defending very well. I think, again, we created too many chances without scoring, so that's a point we have to look at and make it better next time.
16:23Is that a real positive though, the way you were able to limit them and control large portions of the match? No, obviously. I think in the first half, the game was very divided. Obviously, in the second half, Arsenal was defending the result, so it's normal for the teams to drop a little bit more, but I think we controlled well the game. We were very good on the ball and, as I said, we created some chances, but we didn't score. I think that's the main negative of the game for us today. Is the goal you've conceded a really disappointing one? The way you've given the corner away and then conceding from it when you know their strength in that area?
17:03No, it's part of the game. Corners, obviously, we know that they're very good in set pieces. Obviously, I haven't seen the goal again, but obviously, you know when you touch the goalkeeper, when he wants to jump and go for the ball, is very difficult, it makes it very difficult for him and unfortunately Altair couldn't get the ball out of the goal. Did you get a view on that? Any sense from you that it was a foul? No, no, no, as I said I haven't seen the replay and I was in the first ball so I can't talk about it but Altair was saying that in the moment he goes to push the ball, he gets a touch but obviously we know in the Premier League they don't give much in this type of situations even if they had a meeting with us saying that if the players are blocking and not looking at the ball, they will whistle more.
17:48But we know that's just kind of a saying, but not really going to the game. Did you feel like the new boys started the game, so Mbamo and Cunha, added quite a lot of threat to the team, even though obviously no goal to show for it? Yeah, but they create a lot. They were in the right positions. I think obviously Matheus, when he came as a 10, he was much more dangerous. But even as a striker, he creates some chances. We know they're dangerous. We know they're a threat and they can help us a lot in that position, on the counters, coming inside with the ball and get them shots. So we're very aware of what they can give to the team.
18:27It was a good first impression for them, but I'm pretty sure they will do much better. Do you have the sense, despite this defeat, similar to the first question, that this isn't just a repeat of last season? There is some hope that comes out of what you've done in pre-season and what you've done today. No, obviously we have a big hope for this season, for what we want to achieve, for what we want to do this season. So I think, as I said, obviously losing the game is difficult to look at some positive things. But is there positive things to look about? Defending better on the set pieces is something that we need to look about also.
19:05Scoring goals is something that we need to look at. But as I said, I really like the reaction of the fans at the end. them. I really appreciate what they did. The sign of hope that you talk, for me, there was more the sign of hope than what we did on the game. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thanks Bruno.
19:27Daniel Sturridge:What hope did you see? What fresh hope did you see for Manchester United? Come on, Roy, it's the first game. Roy almost fell off the sofa. It's the first game. Give them a little bit of leeway. It's still getting up to speed. There was definitely positives in Man United's play today. OK, they didn't get the result that they wanted. I thought Dogu and Dalot in the first half were outstanding. I thought they took more wrist. Normally, Man United played more a low block. I thought it was more in the mid block. They took chances when Dogu got his chance. Then they bring on Dalot in the second half.
20:03He couldn't create as much as he wanted to. And Mbremel was really good in running in that right-hand channel. I thought there was positives for Man United today. Daniel, would you add to that? I think Kunia today lit the place up.
20:17Daniel Sturridge:I thought he was the best player for Man United for me. Maybe on the pitch. I think what he was doing is going to bring something different to what Man United... They haven't had something like that where it can get you on the edge of your seat. And I think for me, as he continues to go, he's going to be a special player for the team. I think in attack they looked really good. They were knocking on the door, like I said before, Raya was answering. It's football. Sometimes you give your best going forward and it's not good enough. I think defensively they looked better. They were positive in their defensive action centrally.
20:54Daniel Sturridge:You know, you saw the doggy chants in the first half where they swarmed in the middle of the park and off they went. And then he was positive going forward and taking a shot. And I think all in all, of course the result's all that matters. It's football. That's what it's all about, right? You want the three points, but if I'm going into that dressing room off the back of last season's performances, I'm thinking to myself, you know what, man? Yeah, we've lost today, but we've played Arsenal for one. We've given our best. Of course, we should... They drew home with Arsenal last season. What I'm saying is...
21:26Man United should be capable.
21:27Daniel Sturridge:No, they should be capable, but they've also finished. Where in the league? What was it? So, we're talking about... We're not talking about head-to-head. It's a new season, right? if I'm a Manchester United player I'm going in there thinking we've lost today I'm absolutely devastated but in comparison to where we were there's loads of positives to take away and the new players don't have that mindset they're coming in with a fresh mindset thinking I'm coming to Man United I'm coming to rip it up I want to tear this place down I want to show everybody what I'm all about and I want to change this club and bring them back to where they were that's what the new players might say We will give you a chance to respond to this, Roy Yeah, but I just think talking about the new signs they did look like Man United players I give them that they looked like they enjoyed it and they embraced the pressure There are positives Yeah Good We will give Roy a chance to respond to everything else Manchester United in a few minutes' time.
22:14Daniel Sturridge:But when we come back, we're going to get the reaction of the Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, to this opening weekend win.
22:37Daniel Sturridge:I'll be joined as ever by my good friend Dahmer Sheff and a host of top journalists to dissect all the latest transfer business in the Premier League. So if you don't already, give Transfer Talk a follow wherever you get your podcasts from.

24:01Daniel Sturridge:The runners up for three successive seasons. Arsenal fans are asking, could this be their year? Well, they're off to a winning start here, away to Manchester United. Let's hear from the boss, Mikel Arteta, with Patrick Davison. Well, Mikel, we can come to how you did it shortly. But firstly, what did you think about the character your team showed? How important was it that you got the result today? Well, massive. To come in the first picture to Old Trafford with that atmosphere, the way they are building momentum with the new signings and the excitement around it is top. I mean, it's a great feeling.

24:35Then we have to be really humble about the way we did it. And we did it, one, because we put a magnificent set piece in, and after because the way we reacted to mistakes, to enforce mistakes and mistakes that are very far from the standards that we normally have, and we constantly reacted to that in a really possible way. And that's the reason why we had the opportunity to win the game. OK, so for your best level, far too many mistakes, but the reactions to those mistakes got you the result? As you're talking about character and spirit, that's it. I'm not having the best day from the first action, I can make a mistake.
25:07How do I react to that? And it wasn't one, it was many players that acted because there are many moments that, I mean, in open space we should have killed them and after the win, the other way, immediately catching us in the back foot, the way everybody tried, the way everybody defends, it was phenomenal. So you scored with your first corner of the season. We know you're always a threat from set pieces, but it looks like you've worked hard on them over pre-season. A slightly different set-up, it looked like? Yeah, in many ways. We have changed and evolved certain things that obviously we don't want to make it unpredictable for the opposition.
25:40It pays the price. At the end of the game, I won in both boxes, and that's what we've done today. Do you think today, with the expectation that's on you, that was a huge moment? I know it maybe sounds a bit odd to ask it. after one game, but with United and the games you've got to follow, narratives around big clubs can build quickly. Yeah, and it is, and it says a lot, because I just look at the players' faces and they want much more, and we know that we are much better than certain moments where we played. I think before I came here, it was 18 or 22 years without winning at Old Trafford, and now we come here, we won many times, and still unsatisfied, and I take that as a massive compliment and as a way to build what we want to build.
26:19What needs to be better? There's a lot of aspects. I think especially the way we started the game with duals, with 50-50 actions, with simple giveaways after getting in the ball, we need to be very careful against a team that has the speed, the ability in the front line to thread you that way. We need to be very careful. Lastly then, what did you make of your new boys? Zubimendi, Jokeres, the two that started the game? Well, I'm very happy with them. The ones that they come in as well, I think they had a massive impact in the game. We need to glide them together. Some of them physically are still at the highest level or the way that we need to get.
26:52We'll get there. Thank you. Thank you so much. On the back, Mikel. Cheers.
26:56Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, very satisfying victory for Mikel Arteta. But admittance that they're not at their best at this stage of the season. Have they almost, Daniel, got to learn how to use Victor Jocherez at the top of the pitch? I think so, yes. I really do. Why? Because when you are an attacker who's used to doing certain actions, and I think Saka is used to playing a certain way and doing specific types of things. Likewise, the player on the left wing and they've been playing with a striker in Havertz who's very different to Jokeres. It does take time to get used to that player's runs. He's going to have to also alter his game.
27:34Daniel Sturridge:It's not just about the team changing for him. It's about him changing for the team also and understanding how he's going to perform best. The manager's going to have to implement certain things on the training pitch. He's going to have to have personal conversations and that's what it takes for you to hit the ground running. So how did you adapt your game when you went from different clubs, from Man City to Bolton to Chelsea to Liverpool? I think it's, again, the conversations, understanding who you're playing with. So, for instance, when I was at Chelsea, I was playing on the wing. So I knew Didier would like certain types of passes or crosses and Torres was different to him, so I had to play different with Torres.
28:13Daniel Sturridge:And Nico, Analka would be different and maybe you could change positions with Nico a little bit. Likewise, when you talk about Bolton, I was up front with Kevin Davis, so Flickhans, okay, cool, I'm big man, little man vibe today. You know, old school, you know what I'm saying? And then you go to Liverpool, it was me and Louis to start with, and again, it's like you're both almost playing in a split strikers thing. I view it as, Joachares is used to playing a specific way with sport in Lisbon. Throughout his career, I think he's a traditional centre forward who's going to make runs in behind, is a strong player.
28:46Daniel Sturridge:He's got pace, he's powerful, and his game is predicated on that power and those first yards of making a run to get himself in a position to get a shot off. He missed a lot of pre-season, didn't he? He did miss a chunk of pre-season with all the transfer speculation. I don't think he was training. So you're thinking about a few more games. He might get up to speed. He didn't look sharp today. Yeah, he didn't. We can show you his touch map. And this may be, Mike, has suggested that he and Arsenal are some way from unlocking his real potential. I think we've got three touches in the opposition box.
29:16Daniel Sturridge:And for context, I think Szczesko coming on late in the game actually had four touches in the opposition box. And just to add on Jokeres, it's the first time in a league game since he left Coventry that he's not actually had a shot at a game. Yeah, I think what I mentioned is coming back late to pre-season. You'd like these touchmats to be a little bit better, but you expect someone to be the sharpest on the first game of the season. Daniel makes a great point about how to adapt to the team. I think he's a striker where he plays wing-backs and he just makes that run. I think Arsenal, the way they want to play that, Inquitius is through the mid-block and then Havertz getting on the ball and all them sort of things.
29:58But today he just looked a little bit frustrated. And that was not just Arsenal. I think it's because when Man United at times, last season, they were dropping off. But Luke Shaw was engaging, really tight. He knew exactly what he had to do. I thought Jorah was good for a young player as well, reading the game, reading situations. And I thought the atmosphere was just a lot for him today. I think we're different once he goes to the Emirates and he's got the home team behind him.
30:25Daniel Sturridge:Luke United next week, he'll be looking forward to that. Of course. He struggled today, but we didn't expect him to be at his best today anyway.
31:00Daniel Sturridge:you know? to a winning start here. Yeah, and listen, most teams have difficult starts. You can't look at any game and think it's going to be easy. But from Arsenal's point of view, the sign of a really good team is when you're not at your best to win football matches. The worry for me a little bit in the second half, and the manager mentioned it there, is that there were opportunities to really go at United. And we're not talking about difficult passes. Sometimes it's just a simple pass or a simple run. They seemed awful from that point of view. But if you can win when you're not at your best, then that's a big plus.
31:28But going forward, when you're competing, you're trying to compete now with the likes of, obviously, we see Liverpool and Man City. They seem to have that more of a, they want to go for that second goal or that third goal, whereas Arsenal are still a bit. We've got 1-0, we maybe hold on to it. And that kind of backfired a little bit last year when, again, we go back to it, they had too many draws. Too many draws won't win your league titles and that's where they have to improve. So when we see them next week, if they're 1-0 up against Leeds, that they're really clinical. And obviously Leeds at home is a different animal to Man United away, no doubt, as much as United are struggling.
31:57So I think Arsenal will need to find that. And we didn't see it today, and it's the first day of the season, to be really clinical in their play and really go for the second and third goal. Don't be hanging back and thinking we'd hold on. They've done that last year and it cost them.
32:09Daniel Sturridge:I think that they need to score different types of goals to take the next step. More penetrative passes in the central areas, which in turn will give Giocares more opportunities to score goals. I think a lot of the goals he will end up scoring will be goals like Haaland scores, which is one-touch finishes in the box, crosses coming in, headers, poaching in the six-yard box. I think he also thrives off of, similar to Haaland does though, in that those penetrative passes around the box, which is going to give him the chance to make that burst over a few yards to get his shots away. And will Zubimendi help with that as well, when he's got a bit more time and a bit more space?
32:42Daniel Sturridge:For sure. Yeah, well, they scored a goal exactly like that in pre-season, where it was cut back, it went out wide, it come back to Zubimendi, first time cross, and Jokariz was there to head it in, so it was just about building... And when you're a big, strong man like that and you do miss pre-season, Sometimes for the bigger lads who are big units, and he's a big, strong boy, he's like an old-fashioned striker. You definitely need a bit more time to kind of get up to speed. Sometimes the slider lads are a bit sharper up here, but for the big lads, it just takes a bit longer to get back in the swing of things.
33:09Daniel Sturridge:Maybe then worrying signs for Arsenal's opponents in this title race this season, because being far from their best today, they have kept a clean sheet, and they've got the three points here at Old Trafford, which might be a more difficult proposition for visiting teams this season. We will see. And we'll hear from Ruben Amarim next.

35:00Daniel Sturridge:Well, it's all too familiar for Manchester United. Fifteen times they failed to score last season, and it's happened again on this opening day, beaten by Arsenal. Here's Ruben Amarin with Patrick Davison. Well, Ruben, if you just saw the result, You might say same as last season. But if you see the performance, did that feel like progress? Did it feel like a stride forward? I'm really proud of the guys. I think they were really brave in everything they did during the game. So the performance, congratulations for the performance, not congratulations because we lost the game at home. I think we deserve clearly a different result.
35:42and we need to move forward to the next one. So what did you like about the performance? What did you do well that gave you control in large parts of the match? We were more aggressive than last year. We sprinted more. We were more brave. We let one against one all the game. We pressed high. And then with the ball, we had quality. Even when the stadium makes some sounds, we continue to play the way we play we lost fewer balls in the build-up compared to last year we struggled a lot and then the small things that we talk about in the beginning of this season that players like Cunha, like Brian in one moment can elevate the stadium so I think the most important thing we were not boring No, you weren't boring So Mbamo and Cunha even though they weren't able to get on the score sheet today, did you feel like, compared to last season, they gave you a threat, even in moments where maybe Arsenal were on top in the game?
36:49Yeah, you always feel in the game that they can do something and they can push the team, not just with the ball, but without the ball. They press really well. They are working really hard. Again, I'm proud for the game that they played, everybody, but we lost and we need to work on different things. Did the reaction of the fans at full time actually tell you something? Did that tell you that I think they quite liked what they saw? Even during the game, but again, we need to win games, but that was a completely different game from last season. What did you make of the goal you conceded? More or less the same that happened sometimes last year.
37:30For me it's not playing the ball, it's protecting the guys that they are attacking. I understand that we want goals, but when you're touching the goalkeeper in that way, I think it's hard. And especially to lose with a goal like this, I think it's hard. What would you say to your goalkeeper then? Bad luck, that was a foul, or does he have to be stronger in that instance? It's hard to be strong when you have to push and to go for the ball. Sometimes you are pushing and then you don't have more hands to go for the ball. We need to be stronger in that moment, but especially we need to do the same thing in the opposite side.
38:02so we are not changing the rules we have to adapt to the rules and today it's hard to accept because I think we were the better team Lastly then, how do you see that goalkeeper situation moving forward? Bayern Deer was obviously in goal today you've got Tom Heaton and Arna not in the squad at all is that a fight between the three of them? In the last few weeks of the transfer window would you like to add a goalkeeper? No, we have players to win any game of Premier League we need to focus Forget about the noise. We are fighting for the places, that is a good thing, but we are playing as a team.
38:37It doesn't matter who is playing, we want to win games. Thank you. Thanks, Willem.
38:41Daniel Sturridge:Thank you. Well, Roy, we touched on it earlier. Do you see reasons, ground for optimism here for Manchester United this season? Yeah, I think with the couple of signings that come in we saw today, I was encouraged by that. Again, they look like Man United players, they were happy to deal with the pressure, they look like they're good characters. We discussed it many times before, we can be going to run in circles. There's still that worry about United at the back. Ultimately, they're all talking about, I'm hearing obviously noises again about Proud was a good performance, but they've lost the game.
39:13You know, talk about not being boring, but you've got to score goals to win football matches or you're constantly under pressure. There's a good chance you will concede a goal in the Premier League, but if you can't score even the last two competitive games, if you want to say they lost to Spurs, never scored a goal in the final. They've lost an important game again today, didn't score a goal. You look at the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Man United even over the last 20, 30, 40 years is about their attacking players and goal scorers and people who win you matches in big moments.
39:41I know they've got a couple just in the door, but I don't see that with the other group. They can come out afterwards and say, we're a bit unlucky, or Bruno say, the fans are great. But all that means, it means very little to me. But again, I think the expectations around the club and the expectations is that low now, that everyone's almost happy with that. Well, they're starting from such a low bar, aren't they? Would you accept that? Yeah, but that's down on the players because the manager now, he's had his first pre-season, he's had 28 league matches, he's got 27 points. And at the start, we're being told about these coaches coming into the club and they're brilliant coaches and all we're hearing is constantly, well, I need to get some players in.
40:18And then you bring players in, you spend hundreds of millions and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. And then we're talking about the importance of the set pieces. We've seen before, we're watching him here in the warm-up, going through set pieces and set pieces. But the importance of the set pieces is when the game starts.
40:34Daniel Sturridge:Sorry, this head coach never wanted this job middle of last season, did he? He wanted his season, his Manchester United career, to start, if you like, today. I know, but listen, with timing, you can't be picking and choosing when you get a job. Timing's key. So, listen, he's got his foot in the door, he's had his pre-season, there is positives. And I was encouraged by particularly some of the new signings, But you still have a problem with the goalkeeper. You still have a problem defensively. And this was a national team who I think four or five-year-old players haven't turned up. Rice, Nebprez, Odegaard.
41:04I thought Odegaard was shocking. Saka didn't do much. Players off the bench didn't do too much. So this was a blow. This was a poor performance from Arsenal. But again, we gave them credit earlier. You get a result. So from United's point of view, this wasn't a strong Arsenal team coming and going at them. Going, listen, we're up against it. But United still didn't win the game. So we look at the record over the last year or so, or this manager, and after how many games can you sit there and say the same stuff? What's the sign of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again. You come to Man United, part of being a Man United player or being at a club and so on, is entertaining.
41:40And part of entertainment, the best part of any football match is when the ball goes into the back of the air, no one gets excited. They get off their seats a little bit if somebody makes the tackle. But you're here to see goals and last-minute goals in big moments. And has this team got that under locker? Not yet.
41:54Daniel Sturridge:Well, the rebuild had to start somewhere, didn't it? They spent£207 million on three new front players, two of whom started from the outset, Mbormo and Cunha. And they were record levels of low goalscoring last season, Daniel. Do you think these players will score goals for Manchester United? Do you think United will score goals? That was a great save from Ryan. These players are going to score goals. I have no doubt about it. Bermot and Kunja are too good not to score goals. Cesc, I've not seen him yet in the Premier League to really know how the cohesion is going to work with the other two and what type of player he is in this framework.
42:35Daniel Sturridge:But in regards to Kunja and Bermot, we've seen what they can do in the past over the course of their careers in the Premier League. And then coming here today, I'm thinking, wow, Kunja is very, very special. But then, you know, it's going to be a long season, but I am optimistic for them. Let me just talk you through this a little bit. Robert Van Persie was the last Manchester United player to score 20 or more goals in a Premier League season. And look at all those other clubs who've had success at that. Manchester City have had that happen 10 times. Now, that might have been Haaland multiple times or other players involved in that.
43:12Daniel Sturridge:But on 10 occasions, a player scored 20 or more. since a player last did it for Manchester United. Stampton, Forrest, Everton have all done it. Brentford have done it twice, once with Umbermo. Leicester, Chelsea and Arsenal have done it three times. Spurs seven, Liverpool eight. And it's not been through a lack of investment. £761 million has been spent on forwards by Manchester United in that time. And not one of those has managed to get the 20-plus goal. On that list, there's some amazing players on the list. You know, Lukaku, you're looking at 90 million. He plays at Inter, he does really well.
43:53Goes to Napoli, does well. Ronaldo, you know him. Ibrahimovic as well. Cavani, one of the best strikers to run him behind. Falcao, OK, he had his injury problems with his knee at the time. Alexis Sanchez did all right, but, I mean... But what do all these chats mean? We can watch a chat all day. But a lot of it's not the recruitment. A lot of these players come into the club at a bad time. There is that. There'll be reasons for it. Players come in towards the end of their careers. Players had injuries. Or the environment wasn't right. Or the club was too big for them. I suppose the question I want to ask, Roy, is...
44:25Have they spent the money in the right way this summer? Well, we don't know yet. £200 million on the strike force.
44:31Daniel Sturridge:We don't know if they've had much. But you've talked, Roy, about problems with the goalkeeper. Problems with defence. Problems with midfield. Are they right to put all that money at the top of the pitch? Well, we're talking about players getting 20-odd goals here. The team scored 44 last year. So forget about anyone getting 20. You need Man United between them getting 50 or 60 just to try and get it back up the table a little bit. So you have to start some. And I think the signings, yeah, I've been encouraged. I thought today, but this idea of just hanging your hat again on one or two players and having moments, but if these players aren't at it, and we're sitting here again today going, oh, that was unlucky.
45:04Listen, do you know what you get from hitting the post? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You get very little or a keeper making a save. The top boys are clinical. And we've seen that over the weekend. Top boys put the ball on the back, and then they'll go, oh, you're unlucky, or they keep... You put it in the corner, he makes it look good, but it doesn't save it. So these charts and these things, and the money, it's like Monopoly money. You might as well say, two billion. What difference does it make?
45:28Daniel Sturridge:I think they've signed players this year, specifically for the positions. The manager's identified. He has a framework, he has a style of play, which he wants to implement into Manchester United. He's brought those two players specifically for them roles, it's a great thing to say, OK, one of them scored 20 Premier League goals, maybe there were some penalties in there, so in open play, likewise for Kunia. So you'd like to think when they come into this football club, they will be able to make that happen. The 20-plus goals thing, I think that's down to the framework, down to which players, who's taking the onus to take the shot.
46:02Daniel Sturridge:Obviously, them being clinical, the list that you threw up there, you probably got, you know, 10 for Manchester City. Three or four might have been Haaland, and then the other six might be Aguero. you know Salah Suarez I think I was one of them one of those 20s there Sadio Mane Tottenham Harry Kane you know the list goes on so it doesn't really matter as long as they're getting 15 each or even 12 each it's a collective it's a collective thing it's like saying okay you want one for 20 or three for 15 what would you prefer some of them that list there hey there's some bad players on that list I'm kidding he's a good player they want all that good that's really turned you on putting that list up right.
46:42Oh, God, good, yeah. And it's not always the player's fault either. When the club are paying 80, 90 million for an average player, that's not on the player. That's on the club for overpaying for the player. But again, some players come to Man United and the timing at the moment to walk into that dressing room wouldn't be great.
46:56Daniel Sturridge:Yeah. But also, the good thing for a player coming in now, if they can lift them, then the fans will love them. We saw today with a couple of new players, the fans have gone, we're desperate for success. If you can success, get us up to the top half of the table, they'll take that because expectations are so low. Did you know you can stream live Premier League football through Now TV?
