In short
Leeds United thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road on Monday Night Football, with Leeds moving up to third. The episode focuses on Leeds’ dominant first-half intensity, their tactical rotations, and how they punished Newcastle’s young squad under new German manager Matthias Jaissle.
Key claims
Leeds were “brilliant” and “very well coached,” starting games with high intensity; their pressing and duel-winning created chances; and their threat isn’t just direct play to Dominic Calvert-Lewin but coordinated runners and numbers in the box. Notable examples include Calvert-Lewin’s headed goal (plus a second goal ruled as an assist/credited to Jadon Sancho after a halftime clarification), Noah Okafor scoring, and a Lewis Miley own goal. Jadon Sancho (Leeds winger/forward) explains his rotation with Calvert-Lewin and how training patterns create space.
Guests
Rob Edwards (former Luton and Wolves manager) and Jamie Carragher (pundit), plus post-match interviews with Leeds manager Daniel Farke and Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:06This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Thanks for joining us. Elland Road was the venue for Monday Night Football this week as Leeds played Newcastle. This is how we saw things at full time.
0:30They don't get a chance to take it. But they certainly took their chances tonight. Leeds United, a dominant victory. And then Newcastle United, the first meeting of the two German managers. But Barker got the better of Gaisler. Dominic Calvert-Lewin with just the one goal tonight. His other came off ahead of Bogle in the end. Okafor with a goal on the evening as well. there was an own goal from Lewis Miley in the mix as well Bogle fantastic performance from him in that wing-back role and Toure did get his first Premier League goal near the end but it was a real moment a real night to forget for Newcastle United the first defeat for Yeisler and Leeds United remain unbeaten in their start to this Premier League season.
1:25The final score at a raucous Ellen Road. Leeds United for Newcastle United 1. Raucous as it so often is, under the lights. As the Kaiser Chiefs ring out, no rioting there, just party time. Although there's still time for the coach to get a few messages across. It's becoming a bit of a trend, isn't it, in the opening weeks of the season. There's a manager maybe not happy that he didn't get a clean sheet after so much hard work tonight. But the first home win of this Premier League season, nine across last season. And what a difference that made to their overall finish. Now they've got bigger targets on their mind, Leeds United.
2:05And where could this start get them to over the course of a 38-game season? Time to celebrate now, Daniel.
2:18How about that? Up to third. Now, Leeds last season, beyond August, didn't manage to get themselves in the top half of the table. That is a very healthy start to this season. Unbeaten four games in, for the first time at this level, for 25 years.
2:41And not what Matthias Siaisler was hoping for. First defeat for them. They have five points on the board though from their first four games.
3:01Friday Night Football, Brentford Chelsea underway from seven then on Saturday night it's Nottingham Forest up against Coventry. Four matches for you on a busy Super Sunday with three kicking off at 2 o 'clock Bournemouth, Liverpool, Manchester City, Sunderland and Leeds back in action against Crystal Palace followed by Fulham, Manchester United from 4. And remember you can catch up with Saturday Night Live UK the first of the new series star Jeff Goldblum as the host is available right now on Sky One. Rob Edwards, the former Luton and Wolves manager, is here with Jamie Carragher tonight. And you'll get their thoughts next on a comprehensive victory for Leeds United in front of their own fans.
3:52Thumping first-half performance and another for good measure in the second. Formidable.
4:10The football season is back and you can keep across all the action on Sky Sports with 1 ,500 live games available for you to watch this season. That includes 80 % of all televised Premier League games plus matches in the WSL, EFL and Scottish Premiership. If you're not already a Sky customer and want to sign up, head to sky.com to get all the details. Now, though, let's get back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
4:43One of those nights and the more celebrations, the better for Leeds United to absolutely put Newcastle United away here tonight. Remember, both sides unbeaten going into this. Leeds United's record remains untacked. 50 intact, 15 shots to seven. 11 of those 15 in the first half in which they were so dominant. Six of Newcastle United's seven shots came in the second half, which they managed to get a goal back late on from one of their new boys. That's the furthest that Leeds have run this season, 118.3 kilometres. Possession was shared, but the points were not. All three in the back for Leeds United up to third.
5:22Rob Edwards, what did you like most about Leeds tonight? I love the way they start the games. I think their intensity that we spoke about before the game, it was there. But there's more to them than just, like we showed before, about fast attacks and running. There is more there that we've noticed. Lots of rotations, especially on this right-hand side as well with Bogle and Justin and Tanaka. They've got a really good relationship. So they're really well organised, very, very well coached. But they've got a threat. And if you go and press them, they can miss it out. If you back off, they're comfortable and happy to play, as well, and Padua and Tanaka in midfield are exceptional footballers as well in their own right.
5:58They're obviously involved in the first goal, playing to each other. they've got so many strings to their bow you know they're a really really good team and this is not a one-off with Leeds United is it Jamie this is a trend that's building here it's been going on for a while we keep going back to that game don't we in December we highlighted that before the game they move up that table now I think to fifth since last December in terms of the Premier League so in some ways that should almost make Newcastle feel a little bit better about themselves tonight it hasn't gone well it's been a bad night it'll feel like the whole world's watching on Monday Night Football and they've just been beaten up by a really good Premier League team who are on a completely different level physically and when you're by bringing young players to the Premier League a lot of them from Europe have come in and it was probably a little lesson for them as well but also for the staff and the club that it's not going to be easy this season it might have felt easy because the start of the season's gone OK, haven't lost a game, some really good performances there at home to Liverpool, away at Spurs but that was almost like back to reality in the Premier League and it will be a tough season at times for Newcastle because as I said new manager a lot of young players and they're finding their feet in the Premier League and they've just beaten up Did it feel like the first one was coming?
7:09Yeah I think so I mean it was I thought they'd weathered that first 10-15 minutes relatively well Newcastle but then it was growing and the pressure was increasing we spoke about this at half time and before the game the ball into Calvert and he heads it it's a pass and even under pressure it's a headed pass Bogle's around it and even though they lose it like we said at half time they're in great positions to be able to win the ball back and press again aggressively. Newcastle have nowhere to go other than going long and Ampadu's in a really good position for the regain so they compete for the first and that's the other thing as well I know Jamie you said the duels they're so good in the duels they land on the first and second ball so well and Okafor I didn't even mention him before he's a really good footballer really good player getting in a 1v1 situation alright we thought Tanaka could have gone a little bit earlier with the hit and they get a bit of luck but they earned it.
7:59They earned it. They have got a great mix when you think of those two players in midfield, Tanaka and Ampadu. They were a real highlight for me. Last season on the ball technically but it's funny listening to you Rob listening to so many managers coming into the league as well. I know Newcastle are a promoted team as such but it's a new manager coming in. Everyone always speaks about the physicality and I know it feels like we always say that but it does feel like over the last year or two it's jumped again it really does feel like the size of the players I sometimes look at Premier League tunnels now when players are going to come out and I do look at it and think I'm not sure I'd have been able to cope and I'm saying that seriously I wasn't the biggest centre-back I was just on six foot and I'm thinking I think I might be too small now to play you know just the actual power the pace the physicality of everything it just goes up and up each year it doesn't seem to stop yeah the speed it's the speed I think you would have though because you'd have come through the same sort of system and the same things that the lads nowadays have gone through.
8:57So you'd have been able to. But it's quicker. So the distances that you showed, you know, just at the end there, it is important, the total distance. Of course it is, but it's the speed. That's not changed loads over quite a period of time, I don't think. But it's the speed they're doing it now. What is the... When you keep talking about the duels, now that's always been important. Winning headers, tackles, all that type of thing. But is the amount of duels you can test in a game, is that going up all the time? I think, well, a lot of teams now, because they're pressing so aggressively, it is forcing teams to go a little bit longer again now, isn't it?
9:33So then you're inevitably going to get more first and second balls again. I think when teams were maybe dropping off to more mid-blocks and it was a little bit more build-up and a bit more controlled football, there's not as many teams, if you think about it in the league now, that will have that style of play, that real control and dominate a game with 70 % of the ball. It's probably less of it now. So there's more duels. and so your positioning is really, really important. So you want good positioning when you've got the ball to be able to link and play and penetrate but also when you lose it you need people around it to be able to try and win it back quickly which leads to really well.
10:04And I suppose you can't afford when you're playing at Ellen Road to be giving the ball away on the edge of your own box as we saw in the build-up to the second goal. Yeah, we did. But listen, I said this to Rob as the game was going on, no matter what team I'm watching if I see a young player playing and make a mistake I really feel for him no matter who the team is. But he wasn't expected to be on this early either. No, he wasn't. Because I think Gonzalez had to go off. It's a poor pass. But listen, your players make mistakes. Hopefully, I'm sure he'll learn from it. He's come in. He just hasn't punched it in hard enough.
10:34But for me, this goal is about Calvary. But Rob, you were talking about the actual rotation. So before we get there, we'll just stop it now. So that is your... Right centre-back. Right centre-back. And that... Right wing-back. Is your right wing-back. So there was a lot of that going on. It's not just a case of getting up to Calvert-Lew and getting on the second ball. There's a lot of rotations going on when we were watching Leeds. Obviously, we just highlighted the goals at half-time and we're doing that right now. But there's a lot more to it than just knocking up to the big guy and him holding the ball up.
11:03It's the risk they play with and numbers that they get in the box. I mean, again, a lot of stats and numbers now. The more numbers you commit forward and get into dangerous areas, the better chance you've got of scoring and creating chances. Leeds do that really, really well. How do you coach this, Rob? Is this just repetition, getting people in the right places when the ball is here? Bogan, you need to get in the box? Well, I think now he's brought his own dynamic a little bit to this role as well. He's been doing it for a long time. We came up against this and were planning against this last year.
11:29He gets on that last line as much as anyone now from that position. And obviously there now, the regain, okay, they're in good positions. Those set up, ready to regain it and ready to get in the box again. But now he's got, a bit like what we talked about with Munoz earlier on, from that wing-back position. He plays on all three of those lines. but because the way Leeds built and James Justin would go higher and almost play as an orthodox full-back it pushes Bogle right into that last line and whether he's outside or inside the game as he was there that's almost he had five touches of the opposition box tonight and there's only one player who had more than that and that's the fella who took the goal off but listen can I just I absolutely love this I'm fascinated by by people who've got good spring because I actually think I had decent spring myself but certainly not what Calvert-Lewin's got.
12:23Now, forget the ball. Just watch Calvert-Lewin and Bogle as they both come in together. Bogle's coming in now. He's running. He's running towards it to make a jump. Calvert-Lewin is still in the air now with both feet. He's made a little step. Calvert-Lewin's feet now land. He hasn't landed yet. His left foot's going to land now. So, Calvert-Lewin, from almost a standing jump, is not running. Bogle's running. Calvert-Lewin is doing this from a standing jump. Two-foot jump. Look how high Calvert-Lewin gets from a standing jump on two feet. Bogle's running. Jumps off that right foot. He's still climbing.
13:05He's still going up in the air, and he's going to meet this ball at the highest point. I'm going to stop it now. Look where Calvert-Lewin's feet are. how high in the air he is. And that Bogle is so fortunate.
13:21We're laughing because we can see that Jadon is watching the analysis. Jadon, I thought it was a brilliant finish from you. Thank you. I'll take that. Didn't know anything about it. Nothing about it. But Jadon, you said you didn't know nothing about it, but I think you got told at half time about the situation. and it looked like that no one really wanted to give Dominic the news, so the referee had to give him the news. Yeah, I said to the ref, yeah, I don't fancy telling him, especially at half-time. Yeah, and it was no different after the game. He was a bit raging, to be fair. Yeah, no, he's happy.
14:01He's happy with the points. This is you here, Jadon. You're just telling your team, I think you're telling Noah Okafor there. You can never guess what's happened. And did you see this? This is Dominic's reaction with the referee.
14:15Oh no.
14:19Yeah, he's raging. Yeah, he's raging with a goal, but he's happy with the points. Jayden, we've just been looking at your goal and your role in it, and obviously you've got the goal, but me and Rob Edwards here tonight, and we're sort of fascinated with your role in the team and how much rotations were going on. At times you found yourself on the last line, sometimes you found yourself at right wing. how much work is going into that on the training ground? Yeah it's quite a bit of work it's just having an understanding on the players that you're playing with when we've got Dom up there in the middle he's going to compete for everything that goes along so having runners off of him players underneath him to support to get underneath the ball it's massive for us and yeah it paid off well tonight Jadon it's Rob here now well played tonight I thought you were outstanding fully deserved the win as a team but you yourself full of running and you look like you're really, really enjoying your football and playing at the top of your game.
15:14We came up against you last year, and obviously you were finding the same sorts of positions that Jamie was just talking to you about now. James may be playing as an orthodox right-back, and then you go higher up. Can you talk to us a little bit more about when you might find yourself on the outside, and then why you might then drift in or find yourself almost making that run? Like a number 10 would. Can you explain a little bit more around that? Yeah, it's just to do with the rotation. Like today, JJ was going a bit higher and wider, and sometimes it leaves the pocket open for me to go into. If we go a bit more direct, you know, Dom usually occupies two centre-backs, so there's a bit of space in behind as well.
15:48So it's just getting a feel for where the ball might go, different patterns and different movements that we work on in training to get an extra yard and a bit of space. Overall, though, Jane, a really emphatic victory. Just talk us through that first half when you felt like you really had Newcastle United on the ropes. yeah um you know we wanted to start well we wanted to get to get the fans on board and and get them going because it's really tough when when they're like that um and we've done that to start with and then it was just about trying to maintain it um keep the energy high it was a tough game a lot of running for everyone um regardless of the scoreline it was it was a really tough game physically um and yeah they're a top side so we wanted to stay on it because you know they can hurt you at any point the guys have been really praising you not just for tonight but for your contributions from really the second half of last season as well.
16:38What do you think as a group it is possible for Leeds United this season? Yeah, at the moment, I think just take it game by game. I think that's the important thing, not to get too carried away. You know, everyone's ambitious in their own ways, but as a group, we want to just stay focused and take it game by game. All right, Jadon, thank you very much. Listen, you've scored in back-to-back games for the first time in your career, I believe. So you take that goal and you run with it, my friend. Cheers. Thank you very much. Jadon, congratulations. Thank you so much. Cheers. Thank you. So Jadon takes the goal.
17:15Dominic Halbert-Lewin did score one. He, of course, wanted the double. This was the moment that you just saw there, where at halftime the referee broke the news to him. The first one. The first one. Oh, no. Taken off him.
17:31He would not let it lie. They took it off me. They took it off me. And at full time.
17:44I can't believe it. I'm out at half time. The ref told me that they'd give it to Jade and that's the first I heard of it. We saw your face. Did you? Yeah. So then, you know, I felt about that one. I didn't even know he was there to be fair. I just got up early. watched the ball, bang, and then just seen it go in the corner. So it's what it is. I'll take the assist, I guess. It's a goal contribution, isn't it? At the end of the day, they scored from it and he had that marvellous leap. And he got the goal, which was a very different kind of goal. I wonder which would have given him more satisfaction, Jamie.
18:16Maybe this goal, because this is the type of goal that Dominic gets criticised maybe for not putting away. We've seen him so often, you know, score that goal with his head. and I'm trying to think now is there anybody better in the year than Calvert-Loon as a centre-forward in the league right now? There certainly can't be many I think he's outstanding physically and he always has been but this is maybe the part of his game that has let him down at times showing that composure when he's got time to think in front of goal but he was unplayable wasn't he Rob? Yeah he was whether it's going up to him in the year like I said he can pass it with his head which is an incredible skill but he has got this quality and obviously a couple of the chances that we showed before the game that he's had against Brighton, you know, arguably, arguably easier than this one.
19:01They'll get a little bit of fortune with the deflection, but it's a brilliant bit of skill. He's had like a 40-goal season last season. He's had a 15 and a 16 before. No, he's capable. Could he go to a 20 season? Yeah, he can. Yeah, he can because of the chances that he's getting and the way that Leeds play now. It suits him. A lot goes through him, but they can attack on the outside, on the side as well and they'll put dangerous crosses and they'll put balls in the box he's always there for one such finish between the posts if he gets it right and he gets hot there's no reason why he can't get that it's so such a handful to play in the situation when you think of the club he left in terms of Everton and even though he's doing really well now it was probably right for him and right for Everton at the time it's almost a fresh start yes so Everton probably as we know they've got problems in that centre forward area and you're probably looking at him tonight as an Evertonian probably thinking oh why didn't we keep him but it had just for a number of reasons it was right for him to move and sometimes that just rejuvenates the player and he feels like a different player or certainly the player that we saw at Goodison Park under Ancelotti and he was outstanding for a year or two but for me he's the type of player when you look at an ex-Premier League centre-back thinking I'm glad I'm not playing now he would have been an absolute nightmare to sort of handle his leap I love watching him play Yeah a massive handful and it was interesting that Leeds didn't really look to recruit somebody that was going to challenge him in his position, but what they have tried to do is get goals elsewhere.
20:27How important is that? We saw it from Noah Okafor lashing in a fourth in the second half. How important is that for a manager to have players who can contribute from all positions? You do, and if Dominic continues along that trend of 14-15, then you're going to want goals from all over the pitch. This was a really unorthodox finish, if you like. It was a fantastic finish as well, the way he kept it down. It was almost a bit side foot, swinger kind of thing, but it found its way in. Sorry, we'll get to the finish. I just want to ask you about long throws. It's just taking over the Premier League in the last year or two.
21:04Now, it's so difficult to defend that. Not to just defend it, it's very difficult to clear it. So when you think Newcastle get the head on that, sometimes in a corner, if you get your head on a corner, you get the first contact, you can get it right out your box. A long throw, it's very difficult to actually clear the ball out your box. You can hem teams in anyway. I mean, is it a case of the best teams in the league are doing it so we can do it? If you've got someone like Ethan Ampadu who can do it, you'd use it. It's an opportunity. They've scored from it. It's an opportunity to put the ball into a really dangerous area with good numbers, but be set up behind the game as well.
21:35So you're right. You're almost, yeah, you want to win the first and you're set up to try and win the first because you might have Tanaka sneaking in at the back post. A bit like Coventry had a big chance against City from a long throw last weekend. This drops down now. You see, you get your positioning right behind the ball on the edge of the box for exactly that reason. For exactly that. Suffocate the opposition and create opportunities. Not necessarily a first-time strike at goal, but just keep the ball in there. Keep asking them questions to defend.
22:05Yeah, really good strike from him. Eight last season for Noah Okafor, who, if you believe reports, was attributed to forbid from Sunderland at the back end of the transfer window, but Leeds decided they very much wanted to keep him. Will them report too, Dave? We'll make no comments on that. Would there be frustration, though, from Leeds that they did concede? Yeah. You see Daniel going on at the end of the game there now, and I think I could only imagine what he's thinking. He'd be delighted, three points in the Premier League, and obviously a great performance, especially in the first half. There'll be elements of frustration that he wasn't able to continue that dominance.
22:42But there's no two halves the same. You know, there's no two halves the same. So he was probably expecting Newcastle to maybe have a period. But he would have hoped that they could have weathered that. What was it? 19th minute. Batsumana Touré off the bench, getting some minutes and getting a goal. And I suppose that will be a consolation for Matthias Geisler on what was otherwise. A pretty sobering night for the young German. The other German got one over him. And we will hear more from the managers next.
23:40We'll see you next time.

23:44Way fair, every style, every home. You walked in to the commentary box, giving it the biggest name drop of all time. Ishigua texts me saying, Chris Martin wants your number. And I was like, what, the former New Zealand fast bowler? But she went, no, Chris Martin from Colquay wants your number. I thought this was a wind-up. And I get a text from Chris Martin saying, I love the pod, I'd love to meet you and Af, and I still think it's a wind-up. So thank you, Chris, for following us and listening to our nonsense. 24:25However you get them, we will be there. Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. It's time to get more analysis of today's match and head back to the studio.
24:41Great night for Leeds United. They've beaten Newcastle by four goals to one, continuing their really promising start to this season. Leeds fans are starting to get excited. Another goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and maybe there is a new contract around the corner for Daniel Farker, who has won the growing adulation of the Leeds fans at Ellenbrode, not just tonight, but he is building quite a body of work now. Let's take you back to that moment it all turned round for Leeds United in December last season. And Jamie referenced it earlier, but only four teams across the last 29 games. That is quite a body of work, have taken more points than Leeds.
25:21Liverpool only one more point in that time. And that has continued into this season. Remember, beyond August, they didn't get into the top half last season, but sitting pretty in third place with one game to go before the first international break of the season. in what could be possible for Leeds this time round. But even after all that, he wasn't entirely satisfied with the way the game ended. Here he is now with Juliet Farrington. Daniel, it was a special night out there. The fans were lapping it up. If you had one disappointment from tonight, would it be the goal you conceded? I saw you in the technical area and you were fuming.
26:09Yeah, for each and every manager it would be a nightmare after such a game to concede so late and not to have the well-deserved clean sheet. Yeah, of course, I was not happy with the situation. We opened the centre and allowed them to score one goal. It doesn't take anything away that my boys were brilliant today and we fully deserve to win this game. Yeah, perfect start right now with eight points, terrific performance. But yeah, there's never a perfect performance, there's always something to moan about. and this was definitely one of the very rare points I have to criticise. So much energy out there on the pitch.
26:42Yes, energy, quality, good structure in and without possession is complicated against Newcastle because you need to find a good balance out of pressing them but also to be aware of their unbelievable pace and strength and counter-attack. So we found this balance today and especially in the first half we were the dominant side. You say you found the balance, physicality. it was like brutal for them to experience Yes, we have a good fitness level now so it's not just like the will because otherwise always a team who would have the stronger will would win a game, you always need to do this out of a good structure, you need to find the right triggers also like how to press, everyone has to be spot on on the same page and you know it's lots of work on the training ground to be that compact and to be that intense and pressing, it's not like okay we go out right now and run them over, no chance otherwise also the other opponents against Newcastle would have done this.
27:34It's always hard work and also quality work and well-structured work. You need to be good in possession in order to open them to create many chances. We had more chances to score more goals tonight. But overall, I was very happy with our performance. Different goal scorers as well, although the first one was lucky, wasn't it? I wouldn't say lucky anyhow, because we brought ourselves into a good shooting position. You have to ask questions. If the opponent is defending more or less with all players around the box, you have to go also sometimes for a strike out of distance and the quality strike and a few were blocked even before sometimes from my players themselves and yeah, if you ask enough questions then sometimes there's also like a deflected strike to go in but I would also say it was important to combine us into this area and also that I was so brave to be there with a good strike.
28:21The one thing I was going to ask you about Dominic Carvert-Lewin is the fact that 12 months ago you didn't have a club you had that phone conversation with him you brought him here he believed in you you believed in him I put to him that 12 months on he's becoming a bit of a Leeds hero a bit of a cult hero, proper centre forward Yes well deserved, he's in outstanding shape and he plays with lots of confidence, his fitness level is top and I expect him also to lead the group together with a few other players and he's done this, he's overtaken his responsibility and his workload is never in doubt, he scores goals but not just the goals, the way he plays for us is outstanding and for me one of the standout strikers in this league.
29:00What's impressed you the most about this start that you've had? Is it something that you've worked hard on in the summer that you're actually seeing come to fruition? The consistency of the performance away performances. We had difficult away games, also very difficult home games against Brentford and Newcastle but also we played the games very consistent and very much on the front foot. Also flexible, we can change the base formation if needed. We look very, very solid at the back but we have also created many chances could have scored more than just the goals that we have scored. So overall, at the moment, a good balance.
29:35But again, we're just on eight points. If we right now stop to win points, we won't achieve our goals. But you can at least enjoy tonight? Tonight we will enjoy, but from tomorrow, we prepare for the next difficult game on Sunday. Enjoy your week, Daniel. Thank you. We will. Generally pretty happy, but he's going to be whipping them for that one they conceded at the end. You get that sense. They love him, don't they? so Bournemouth Sunderland Brighton all playing in Europe this season why can't it be Leeds turn next season any reason no no reason at all if they keep people fit they keep the performance levels consistent like he's just mentioned there Daniel I don't see any reason why they can't they're definitely in that bracket of teams now they'll be in the mix there's no doubt about it and I keep pointing there to Alan Road at the moment I'm looking at on the big screen because that is it almost that brings a few more points I think the fans are incredible there and obviously with the intensity the lads are playing at it's a real fortress it's a difficult place to go their home form will be key to it as well It's a bear pit isn't it it's a throwback Ellen Rold you just you imagine what it's going to be like and it is and it's because we've got so many new grounds I'm thinking of Everton as well good as someone's like that you know that old fashioned ground they get behind or they get on top of you you know the opposition and Ellen Rold feels like that but as I said we're losing them aren't we because of the nature of you know new stadiums and different things but It's a fantastic atmosphere.
30:56Imagine what it's going to be like when they bump that capacity, which is the plan right now. Newcastle found it tough tonight. Here's Matthias Eisler with Juliet Farrington. Matthias, you know it's going to be a season of ups and downs and you're new coming to the Premier League and you've got this new young team as well. That was brutal out there tonight. Yeah, that's football. It's the Premier League. It was clear from the start and I said that many times that we will have up and downs, challenges along the way. And tonight, yeah, we face that challenge. And it's tough, it's really tough. I have to say, difficult to digest.
31:37But I hope, and this is the chance now also, to learn straight away out of that. Because not that long time now, till the next match at home, this is good to show the right reaction again. When you say difficult to digest, what frustrated you, annoyed you, disappointed you the most? Well, you know, again, it's clear with our young squad that they will be up and down. So I said that just now, and you need to bring the fundamentals on the pitch, especially against the physical strong team. Leeds is so intense, especially here at home, and we couldn't match that physicality in the first half. So that was a key element.
32:17Of course, there are also some other aspects as well, but I don't want to search excuses now. We need to learn out of it and to do it better. One of the words I wrote on my team sheet was overwhelming. Were you overwhelmed as a team? No, I think it was just what I said. We missed the fundamentals. This is normal. If you don't bring that on the pitch, then you struggle. And that's what happened today. And I guess as well, you don't really have a lot of options at the moment, do you? Because of injuries and Nico as well, the concussion. Do you know the severity of that yet? This comes down all together, right?
32:56But this is also a challenge we need to overcome and we will. What message have you said to your players? Exactly this, that we need to learn out of it. We need to bring first the fundamentals on the pitch and then we can build on that. And I guess you do have the confidence that you will show up in the next game. Of course. No problem at all. there won't be a confidence hit from this. No. Thank you. Well, they are a young team and they have got a lot younger this summer. They have a very young manager as well. Is it fair to expect moments like this, nights like this, given this change for Newcastle?
33:38Yeah, it's not a surprise. I don't think most teams other than the very, very top ones can have a night like this in the Premier League because teams are capable of blowing your way like Leeds did in the first half. I like what he's saying there. no excuses got to use it as a learning opportunity now and let's see how he and his young team react in the next game but he's not making excuses he's not hiding behind anything it sounds like a bit of a cliche Rob but can you actually learn more on nights like this sometimes well you won't sleep so you're on the however they're getting back he's looking at it straight away now so you'll be watching it and watching it and watching it so you'll be able to get it out of the system quite quickly with the players and try and almost yeah learn from it put it to bed and be looking forward to the next game as well.
34:20But there'll be some key things. He talked about the physicality there, but he said there's one or two other things as well, which is obviously going to keep in-house and deal with the players from a tactical point of view, I would have thought. So lots of work to do now between now and the next game. But it forces, I think, a defeat sometimes forces you into really looking deep inside you and going, OK, it was the brutal honesty here. We've made some mistakes. Let's learn and get better. Reality check, do you think? Yeah, a little bit, because it was never going to be easy this season for Newcastle.
34:47and what we saw tonight they were probably fearing first game of the season against Liverpool you know and then you've got Tottenham away as well your next game so they've made a really good start Newcastle considering what happened in the summer change of manager bringing young players in who don't know the Premier League when you think of the results they've got they'd have taken that but because that's just happened tonight and you've lost 4-0 and the cameras are there and all Newcastle fans are watching at home to be bitterly disappointed but yeah but listen they've got to dust themselves down But unfortunately for them, I think there will be more nights like that this season because that's the nature of a young manager coming in with a young team.
35:25And at times, like what happened tonight, losing 4-1 away from home will happen because, as I said, the physicality in the Premier League and when you've got young players like that, at times they will find it difficult to cope. Yeah, they've got themselves a consolation, but it won't really feel like that, will it? But Leeds will do that to a few teams this season. You feel very strong tonight and an exciting season ahead for them. and potentially for one or two of the new boys. That's what we're going to have a look at next through the prism of Rob Edwards' expertise. Do stay with us.

37:07Welcome back to Monday Night Football. We're talking now about the battle to beat the drop and focusing on the three promoted sides who've made different starts. Hull City, magnificent so far. And on this list is amongst the best starts we've seen by promoted sides. Eight points on the board from their first four games. And this was the team I think everyone was writing off before a ball was kicked because of the way they got to the Premier League, because they weren't that impressive in the championship last season. Did you see this coming, Rob? No, in all honesty. well done to them. They've been incredible.
37:41Obviously, it is early days, but the fact now that they've taken points off Manchester United and Chelsea away as well now and the consistency that they're showing, the stubbornness that they're showing without the ball and in terms of giving up chances, and they are creating chances as well the way they do it. It's almost because of the way they got promoted. They're not having to change as much as maybe some of the other teams when they have gone up. And it could suit them. Direct? Yeah, but fast attacks, playing to their strengths. Olly McBurnie there, we just talked about it with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, you know, just bumping and being strong.
38:15I know Ryan Giles really well and I've worked with him a number of times. It's great to see him doing so well and playing to his strengths. He's brilliant at delivering crosses and especially on the run as well. So he's involved in a goal, in creating a chance, the corner that leads to the next goal. Is this interesting here, Rob, in terms of Chelsea's tactic? We highlighted this against Arsenal where they put four up. and you know I just think sometimes you put four up that means they've got to bring players back but I almost think the man marking situation in the boxing there's so much more space for the attacking player to move because I sometimes think when you're in an attacking corner there's that many bodies there it's hard to actually get a run or actually move I mean what's your thoughts on that actual set up well you're always going to give something away first of all whatever you do you bring everyone back then you might be giving up people to say why can't you leave one up and try and take another player back or give us a counter-attacking threat they obviously feel it's the best opportunity to free up more space in the box to maybe there's numbers that will suggest this as well from that point of view but take some of the bigger threats out trusting the players the big you know the the big defenders to be able to do their job and then deal with it with that first contact and then give them a huge counter-attacking threat as well with the players that they're leaving up but the one thing they have give up you mentioned you've got to give something up edge of the box definitely so they'll talk about that and they'll work on it And I'll say, look, if anything comes out, a bit like what we were talking about with the long throw and then dropping out to that position, who's getting out there quick to be able to close it down?
39:40It's going to be the nearest man throwing themselves in front of it. But obviously, yeah, they're not able to they're not able to affect it. And obviously, it's a brilliant goal from Hull's perspective, getting the first contact, first of all, and then following it in. But you're going to give you're going to give something away. It wasn't just that, though, was it? I mean, this is Chelsea playing at home, a Chelsea team that has been so expensively assembled that people have been talking about as possible title contenders. How much confidence will they take from this? Loads, loads. We went there early in the season as well with Luton and it was a difficult night for us.
40:10We lost 3-0. At home, it was a different game. We lost 3-2 and we really gave it to them. But to do this away from home, a newly promoted team, and like I said, a team that's not necessarily going to have loads and loads of the ball, but they are effective when they do win it back. Here he is now on the run. That is him. That is Gilo at his best on the run. What a chance to win the game. It's an amazing chance. A great cross. Again, arriving with good numbers in the box as well, showing real intent. Not just sitting back for the draw as well. They've got to try and win. He's a character as well.
40:43And there's Ryan Giles. Top of open play crosses this season by some distance as well. We were thinking about your Luton team that you came up with and looking at the way that Hull City came up as well. You talked about the pace of getting forward, the physicality at the top of the pitch, winning those duels, but also the quality from that same position of the pitch. You had Ryan Giles, but also Alfie Doughty. We did. We were slightly different. I think they were really good on the counter-attack last year in getting success. We were different. We would really press teams. We would play fast and direct football, but we would smother teams and try and keep the ball as far away from the goal as possible, whether the opposition had it or whether we had it.
41:21And we create chances with, yeah, width, crosses, numbers in the box. They were really good at counterattacking. It suits Gilo down to the ground. That was why we brought him to the Premier League. His athleticism, the stuff that we're seeing there, that's what we were expecting from him. Alfie stepped up and obviously we had the two of them to go, you know, go to war and go toe-to-toe and almost the best man will play. And Alfie did great that year. And Gilo would have been frustrated. He didn't play as much, but he's matured again. He's learnt again. He's gone to Hull, done really, really well.
41:50And now he's doing it in the Premier League where he's always wanted to be. But they're playing to his strength. He's really quick. And on the run, that cross that he's got when he gets it right is really, really dangerous. I heard this theory that Hull City, it's different for them than it is for Ipswich Town and for Coventry. And Coventry, a bit like sort of Leeds the previous season getting almost 100 points. Whereas Hull City, it was through the playoffs. They knew they had a lot to do. And they, I think you said it before, they're almost playing the same way as they were in the championship.
42:21Yeah, I think that same message that the manager will be giving them will help. The same style and same way of playing. Clearly, it's getting results at the moment. So they'll have total buying and belief from the players. But they're not then having to search for a different way. Whereas I felt this as well with Luton. Possibly, I'm not saying he will because I'm not them. but Frank Lampard might be having to figure out a different way because they were so dominant, really, Coventry last year. Maybe like Burnley were the year that we got promoted with Luton as well. It's so different and so much harder in the Premier League.
42:57Maybe that style suits home more. A possession-based team who dominate games to basically being out of possession, maybe having to defend a lot of teams. More so, Jamie, definitely. I mean, Coventry were really, I thought they were really intelligent last year as well because they mixed the game up well. They weren't a team that just dominated every game. They would play forward quickly as well and utilise their strengths. You know, they didn't have to have more of the ball to win games. I thought they were really good. They could build and control the game, but they could hit you quickly and get the ball forward quickly, fast attacks with quality as well.
43:24So they could play a number of different ways. Look, they've had difficult games as well, Coventry. You know, they have played Arsenal, they've played City. I watched them closely against City as well, and they had three big chances. It could have been different. On a different day, it could have been different. But it's not quite gone their way at the moment, where it has gone holes. So they've got the belief, they've got that buoyancy and energy around them at the moment. Now, Frank Lampard will be working really hard with his staff to keep the belief and the motivation in the players because they will be doing a lot of good things.
43:51They are doing a lot of good things. They did great things last year as well. And it took us to the fifth game to get our first result with Luton. And, you know, why not? Why not for them? It will come. there's also that balance isn't there between loyalty to the group that got you there and thinking we've got to be ready and equipped for the premier league has that been easier in some respects for Gary O 'Neill at Ipswich Town because he doesn't really have any loyalty to the players that got Ipswich promoted because he's just he's just come in in the summer he's new in I mean yeah another one Gary's that you know they've had a great start and he's doing really really well in the short period of time that he's been in.
44:31Obviously had a pre-season to work with the players. But you're right. You're right. But again, for belief, two victories early on. It's just a late win as well now. They'll be feeling so much confidence from this. But I watched them again as well against Liverpool and I thought, all right, they lost the game 2-0. But after that first 10 minutes where they were a couple of goals down, I thought they played very, very well as well. Gary knows the Premier League well now. He's He's done a good number of games in the league. So he's got a real good understanding of what will get results. You know, he's done it before with Wolves and Bournemouth and keeping them in the Premier League and more with Wolves.
45:08And they've got a couple of goal scorers. They have. Yeah, they have. They've got a threat there. That was canny, wasn't it, from Fleming? Yeah, he could be a really good bit of business. I think he's, again, another one, a handful, a bit more of an old school sort of likes to use his body and be a bit of someone to play off. but he did really well last year, obviously in a difficult year for Burnley. So I think you're right. I think you hit the nail on the head there. Gary will be able to now, he comes in with fresh eyes, real clear, this is what I want to be able to do. I know what gets success in terms of staying in the league for a newly promoted team.
45:47But yeah, you won't be feeling that loyalty like maybe other managers will do when they have taken a team up. So two brilliant starts in terms of points from Ipswich and they should feel very, very hopeful about the season ahead now. It's so hard to get six or eight points. It can take six, eight, ten weeks at times. Well, 100%. And that will make Frank Lampard and Coventry feel even worse, won't it, Jamie? Will there come a point, do you think, where he almost goes, OK, I've tried it with the ones who've got me promoted and now I'm going to start afresh. I'm not sure they have that many options, actually.
46:21Listen, you see that he looks really poor, but this was a game where anybody could have got the first goal here and let's not forget they're coming up against a really top Premier League team in Brighton they're a really good outfit and the fact that they never took their chance were probably not quite clinical enough meant that they go 1-0 down and then this just takes the game away from them I think there was a chance as well just before this in the second half we've seen some chances Coventry had in the first half but they had one I think very early in the second half as well round the edge of the box and then listen the game just gets away from them And, OK, I think it's Bobby Thomas makes a poor challenge there, but then a couple of the goals are too, you know, great goal.
46:59I mean, Lewis Dunks score another goal. You do get punished, you know, you do get punished at this level more so than the championship. But they are creating chances. I know they haven't scored yet, but they are creating chances. I mean, three brilliant ones last week at the Etihad. I mean, that doesn't happen really in the championship. So when you're a Coventry player and it feels like everything the opposition hits is hitting the back of your net, How do you, as the boss, manage to keep everyone's heads up and keep trying to convince them and give them that belief? You remind them how well they've done in the first place.
47:28And, all right, you've lost. And everyone looks at the result these days and they think, oh, he's doing great or he's failing. It's not that. You can get promoted and be a brilliant manager. And all of a sudden then you lose a few games in the Premier League and you're getting judged against Mikel's Arsenal now or other teams like that. And all of a sudden now it's not that they're competing well. I know the other day the scoreline didn't suggest that but you know it can happen as we've just alluded to in the Premier League they competed really well against Arsenal and Manchester City it'll remind them of the performances it'll remind them of how well they've done before and they will be looking at little tweaks all the time now whether that is a new player that's coming in or whether that's something tactical they want to shift or they need to get better on some of the basics or you know whether that's set plays or we need to play forward a bit quicker or whatever it might be he'll be looking at that little edge that they can that they can get we had to change at Luton after about 12 games we had a game at Brentford where we were too passive and I didn't really like us and then after that I thought right we've got to be we've got to be us here if we're going to go down we've got to go down swinging and giving everything so against Arsenal in the next game right we are total man for man we're going to show the best side of us and go for it and that was a bit of a a bit of a Luton 2.0 if you like so we had to adapt and evolve how did the The players received that.
48:42Yeah, they loved it because it was positive. And it was me saying, look, I don't care if it's Arsenal, we're going to go for them, you know? And it was at home and Kenilworth Road is obviously a little bit different. But we used that to our advantage. And then they'll be looking for that. They'll be looking for that. The fans will be totally with them. They'll love Frank Lampard for what he's given them. They're a great atmosphere. They'll love him for what he's given them. He'll have the players right there still because of what he's given those lads as well in terms of promotion, playing in the Premier League.
49:08And the new ones that have come in will love him as well because of the opportunities giving them the chance that they've got now. So he'll have the players right there. And him and his staff are really, really good. And they'll know there's areas that we can improve on. And obviously, whether that's giving one or two chances away that they wouldn't have done before, or how they're going to try and exploit the opposition team in different ways. Can I ask you something? I sometimes think when you come up as a promoted team or as a manager, you're used to winning. You've almost got to get used to losing in some ways.
49:36and then almost every promoter team will go on a run at some stage in the season where you don't win for seven or eight games or something. I mean, what's it like as a manager? Yes, it's disappointing. You've never had that, have you? No, but the points you're trying to make is, do you almost have that feeling that you think, you can't see yourself winning another game? You don't know how you're going to win a game in football. I think with two different experiences, the two experiences I've had in the Premier League have been quite different, actually. Luton getting up and the expectation was really, let's be honest, was low.
50:07And so it was almost a little bit more of a shot to nothing. And we could go and be brave and go and be us. And I know this sounds silly to people listening. I might think, what is he on about? But competing, maybe losing 3-2 against Chelsea or losing 3-2 against Villa, 4-3 against Arsenal, going up to Newcastle and drawing 4-0. That's like a win for what we are and how we're performing and competing against these top, top teams and managers and players. So the players take a lot from that. And we've got to then, all right, yeah, we try and show the things we improve that we need to improve but lads you're doing so well you know and and really really try and be as positive as possible which i'm sure frank and joe edwards and all of his staff and that they'll be doing now um so you can go a period of time and if look if it goes on and on and on and on and on then all right there's there's there's questions with wolves it was different when we first came in there was you know we arrived and it was difficult you know two points from 11 games and And it took some time then to try and get it to where we wanted to become competitive.
51:08And that bit's hard because it was different. We hadn't taken the group up. We've inherited a group that's low at the moment. And that one was a different challenge again, which we knew it was going to be really difficult going in. And that bit was probably a little bit tougher. But we knew why we were there. We were there because we're in a difficult spot. So consistent messages, you know, making sure that you get the training right, the meetings right, and the energy needs to be good. And if my energy drops, then I've seen it towards the end of the loop and I know then that can affect the whole group as well.
51:41So my energy, our energy as the head coach, as the manager, everyone's looking at you. It needs to be right. That belief, when we stand in front of that group of players, has to be there. I have to believe totally that we can go and win. We can go to the Etihad, we can go to Anfield, we can go and win. And then you can see the nods from the players in the meetings and you can see it when you go out on the training pitch. What happens if you see the shakes? time's close bye lads Compton have had a really tough start haven't they with that whole game in the middle which will feel like one that got away but again Brighton such an impressive Premier League team they are becoming consistently year upon year and they are the League of Nations as well thanks to Bill Edgar a Times contributor for pointing this one out for us 15 nationalities taking the field for Brighton this weekend, which is quite something, isn't it?
52:35So you start to think, Rob, you know, how are you doing the team talk here for a start? Yeah, it is interesting. I mean, the majority of the lads, I'm sure, will speak English, I'm sure. Did you make that a rule in your dressing rooms, even at Wolves, where there'd been a big, I suppose, Portuguese influence? No, I think it was something that we would want, but at the same time, it's almost inevitable, especially when they're having some lunch or they've got their own time, that they congregate together. some of the boys are from the same parts of the world and they might try and speak in their native tongue.
53:06I think what was key for us at Wolves was I had a brilliant group of staff that I was working with but brought Rui Silver in who was um it would work with Nuno previously and is back with Nuno at West Ham now but was was able to help us with some of those language barriers. I think it's really if you've got those blanks you know if I've got those blanks then I'm not speaking three or four languages to try and fill that in the staff as well so that really helped us with maybe some of the Brazilians and different nationalities that we had. But yeah, that is interesting there. But Fabian, I'm sure, has got a few languages in the locker and I'm sure that most of those lads will speak English.
53:41But it does make you wonder if more Premier League sides are collecting these multinational groups of players, why anyone would need or want an English-speaking British manager? It's something that we've got to look at as well and try and get back to school. how's that going Rob it's been a pleasure having you with us thank you so much and a really interesting insight into the challenges facing those three newly promoted sides on their travails so far the football keeps on coming this week on Sky Sports because the Carabao Cup continues into round three and we've got three nights of it coming your way busy on Tuesday tomorrow night Liverpool Spurs There's Ipswich Arsenal, also Peterborough, Barnsley, West Ham, Fulham and Reading taking on Brentford.
