In short
Arsenal vs Everton and Newcastle vs Chelsea were the focus. Topic: Arsenal win 2-0 at the Emirates with late impact from 16-year-old Max Dowman, who becomes the Premier League’s youngest-ever scorer (16 years, 73 days). Victor Jorokes also scores after Dowman’s introduction; Arsenal move 10 points clear at the top.
Key claims
Dowman’s calm, fear-free confidence “changed the complexion” of the match; Arteta’s double substitution at 74 minutes was decisive; Everton’s chances were blocked/denied, with Jordan Pickford and Everton’s defense unable to stop the late swing.
Notable examples
Dowman’s byline cross/delivery leading to Jorokes’ goal via Pickford confusion and a deflection; Dowman’s own finish after a difficult header/strength/close control.
Guests
Jamie Redknapp and Daniel Sturridge (studio analysis), plus managers Eddie Howe (Newcastle) and David Moyes (Everton) and Victor Jorokes (post-match interview).

A brilliant away performance by the men in black and white stripes. They had a game plan, it was executed to a tee. a performance of character a performance of defiance and a performance that saw the one goal from Anthony Gordon on 18 minutes enough to win it Chelsea on the back of their draining evening in Paris, huffed and puffed but could not blow Newcastle's house down and it's their house that's breached, a first home Premier League defeat for Liam Rossini Chris Sutton absolutely brilliant performance from Eddie Haran, his men defended superbly some of the blocks they got in were absolutely outstanding and Aaron Ramsdale in the Newcastle goal not overly worked and then they took the chance when it did come along good forward run from Joe Willock and unselfish fed Anthony Gordon and Newcastle take the three points from Chelsea it's a big chance missed the opportunity to go into third place and they were pummeled in Paris in the week and this will be a sore one for Liam Rossignor a tough night for Chelsea Newcastle really against the odds taking all three points Chelsea had the chance to set the pace in the race for Champions League qualification next season instead they find themselves off the pace not a good week for Liam Rossignor back-to-back defeats in Paris and here in West London on Saturday night where they have been beaten by Newcastle by one goal to nil.
1:57Arsenal have never had a younger goalscorer and they've rarely had a better chance to win the Premier League in recent seasons. Mikel Arteta's side have left it late, but they've left it late to produce another memorable moment in what they hoped will be the most memorable of seasons. But it is the teenager who will steal the headlines. It was Jokeres with the goal right at the end, but not right at the end enough because that young man there who's expected to be a superstar, but he'll feel like a superstar right now for this Arsenal side who have taken another step closer to that overdue title.
2:45they increase their advantage at the top but that will be partly forgotten in all of this because what's more important is that they've won tonight and that that young man off the bench as well as slightly older man in Victor Jokeres have earned them the point and Alan one more word from you well it's not good for the blood pressure of these Arsenal fans it was a really tough watch for so long until right at the death. Is it going to continue in this vein? We'll wait and see, but for now, three points are all that matter. A young man who's 16 years and 73 days old has become the youngest scorer in Premier League history and has helped Arsenal to win this match.
3:34Final score at the Emirates, Arsenal 2, Everton 0. not just one of the moments of this Premier League season one of the most incredible memorable moments in Premier League history officially the youngest scorer so you can barely believe it can he what were you doing at 16 and 73 days because Max Dowman might be winning the Premier League with Arsenal that is just extraordinary Jamie unbelievable what is a context he hasn't even done his GCSEs yet and he is doing things like that and making the game look so easy. Now, I'd like to say I'm surprised. I've seen that little boy since he was seven, and I remember watching him thinking, oh, my goodness, you have got so much talent, and he's a lefty.
4:19And as we all know, Daniel, you're a lefty. Lefties do it better. He's such a fantastic player. I mean, what joy he's given to you. Whether you're an Arsenal fan or not, how could you not enjoy that? Welcome back to Viewers on Sky Sports Premier League, by the way. We've just been watching Chelsea and Newcastle. you've missed an incredible moment from that young man Max Downman, Daniel Sturridge. I mean they were playing salt and pepper on, I'm talking about he brought the season of today,
4:43Daniel Sturridge:he brought that flavour to this game, that moment of magic at the end was scintillating and to have the ability to do that at that age, it's just wow. How calm he was in that moment Daniel? I mean the level of confidence to be able to do what he did there, not just physically but technically, it's so difficult to do, a young man of that age to do that in such a big game, Wow, special. And it wasn't just that. It was the assist for the goal. It was when he came onto the pitch, the lift that he gave him. Because I promise you, Arsenal were not going to win that game until he came on. Totally agree.
5:17They were in quicksand. They had no energy. The crowd were on them. He changed the whole complexion of that football match when they brought him onto the pitch. Brilliant ball it was, wasn't it? From the byline that went over Jordan Pickford. He got confused whether to stay, whether to come. And then that deflection, which has laid it on a plate for Victor Jokeres, who tucked it away for that first important goal. And we can hear from the goalscorer now, Jokeres, that is. He's with David Craig. Victor, a match with so many moments, so many talking points, but let's just talk about that very special moment at the end for that young man, Max Daumann, 16 years of age.
5:57Just sum that up. No, it's incredible. I think you can see how he plays. he plays so calm
6:04Daniel Sturridge:and yeah without fear every time he gets the ball and I think he takes the right decisions most of the time as well and you can see the goal definitely took the right one and yeah he's an amazing player and it was a great goal for him and yeah I'm so happy for him The two of you came on together it changed the course of the game what was Mikel's instructions other than just try and win the game? No it was just getting information and do the plan that we talked about before the game. And yeah, we knew that. And then, yeah, of course, try to change the game and to get the win. So yeah, we try to take our chances.
6:44And yeah, I think we did. You got the all-important first goal. Before that, you could feel the tension, the atmosphere in the stadium. Were you aware of that? Could you sense it? Yeah, I think it's normal when it's 0-0. And yeah, it's only a few minutes left. and yeah, of course, we always try to win the games and we know how important this win is and yeah, it can happen but yeah, you saw the atmosphere also after goals and that's what we love. I mentioned special moments. How big though and how special could this moment be with Man City still to play tonight but the gap at this moment is now 10 points?
7:24Yeah, I think every win is important and yeah, of course, we try to do our best in our games and we can't control the other results. But, yeah, we're in a good position and, yeah, we try to enjoy this win now. At moments like this, with a young man scoring a goal like that, his first senior goal for Arsenal, is that what makes teams special and bring you things that are special? Yeah, I think if you always go into the game with the right attitude and with the right belief, I think together and with a good atmosphere between the group or in the group, I think we can achieve anything. When Max comes on, I think he can feel that.
8:09We're behind him like we are behind every one of us. That's why we play good. Well, Victor, well done. A great contribution from you and a great contribution from Max. He is the player of the match. Will you give him the trophy when you get in the dressing room? Yeah, let's see about that.
8:29He's keeping that for himself. There's plenty of time for Max Zaman, but Jokka has certainly played his part coming off the bench, getting his 16th of the season in all competitions, 11 now in the Premier League, and that intervention from him might just have been super crucial for Arsenal in this title race. So the story so far this Premier League weekend, no goals between Burnley and Bournemouth, who are now beaten in 10. Sunderland beaten at home for the third game in succession by Brighton side, who look like they're improving at just the right time. Three wins out of four from them. Minter with a strange sort of goal.
9:01The only goal in that contest, 2-0 victory for Arsenal over Everton. And Newcastle winning at Stamford Bridge for just the second time in 38 years in the league. Beating Chelsea by a goal to nil. You can scan that QR code, you'll see all of the action so far. A lot of football still to be played, as you can see on this Premier League weekend. end. For now, this is how it looks and crucially, Arsenal are indeed 10 points clear at the top and it's still very much in their hands. They've only got seven games to go. Four at home, three away from home to get their first title for 22 years. Manchester City in action this evening at West Ham, Then come Manchester United, who play Aston Villa tomorrow.
9:48Chelsea in there in fifth place. Liverpool, who play Spurs live on Super Sunday. Then Brentford, who we watch on Monday Night Football against Wolves. And actually, there is a chance for Brentford to be pushing on for Champions League football. That is a realistic possibility at this stage of the season. And who would have thought that? This is how we look at the bottom, with Brighton slipping back into the bottom half. With Newcastle's climb into the top half. Sutherland slipping today and West Ham with a chance to get out of the bottom three if they can pick up something against Manchester City.
10:29Right, what have we got ahead to look forward to? How about this? The Chinese Grand Prix. We are underway with our first race of the season in Australia and second race comes to you tomorrow from 5.30 on Sky Sports F1 with 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli on pole in the Mercedes. 11:21Lots to come from us here tonight, reflecting on two very interesting games in the capital this evening with Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Redknapp. Yes, the scenes of celebration continuing at the Emirates, but we will reflect on quite a bizarre evening at Stamford Bridge where Newcastle came away the victors.
11:42And of course, the big story in the title race in North London, Jokeres off the bench to score the goal, but he is not the talk of Arsenal tonight. It's Max Power, young 16-year-old downman, who might just have helped Arsenal take a huge step towards the title.

12:48This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get more analysis of the game and return to the studio.
12:58Newcastle got the win at Stamford Bridge tonight. Joe Willock bursting through the middle and teeing up Anthony Gordon. For just his second goal from open play in the Premier League this season, but that is 16 in all competitions for Gordon, who wasn't fit to start against Barcelona, but did today to great effect for the Geordies. And two goals for Arsenal in the end, but they were made to work mighty hard by Everton at the Emirates tonight. The substitutions made the difference. Jokeres scoring the first, helped by Max Dahman, who then scored himself in quite an incredible fashion, becoming the youngest goal scorer in Premier League history at just 16 and 73 days.
13:41What a story for Arsenal tonight. What a story for the Premier League, because Arsenal, because of that, are now 10 points clear at the top. So this is the breakdown. 25 shots, the most that Arsenal have had in a game this season. Nine from Everton, three of which on target. No discussion in terms of the expected goals because there were a couple of tap-ins in the end for those Arsenal players. After that double substitution on the 74th minute that made all the difference in the end for Mikel Arteta's side. And that was it, wasn't it? That was the big moment in the game when it swung in Arsenal's favour.
14:19Where are they? There they are. Down and coming on. Jokere's onto the pitch as well. And that was the big difference, wasn't it? Yeah, and Braves, I think you have to give the manager credit because you've got a young man. It was quite out for him. Gabriel Jesus, he didn't use tonight. But this young man's been out for three months. He had a bad ankle injury. So, Arsenal fans are probably wondering where he was. But the impact when he came on was just sensational. That ball, yes, Jordan Pickford should do better. But it was a teasing cross. It comes in at a really difficult flight to stop. He just thinks, maybe can I get it?
14:51He gets his finger twitch to it. Hits in Capia and they'll never find an easier goal than that, Dan. You would have liked those ones, wouldn't you?
14:56Daniel Sturridge:Oh man, the joy that I would have felt if I was Giocarez looking and seeing that ball just fall into my lap. Empty net. As you said, Jordan Pickford must feel like he could have done better with that one. But for Giocarez to position himself in between the posts, being aware, he's the only one who reacted. As you can see, the defenders didn't react. They thought the play was over. Giocarez is the only one sniffing for a goal and he deserves it. He did more in those 16 minutes in that wide area. Plus, obviously injury time than what Bukayo Saka did on the right. it probably helped change Ibakaio into a like he came into that sort of number 10 role Everson of course pushing for an equalising goal Jordan Pickford comes up the pitch there's nobody in the Everson net but he makes it look so simple this Daniel talk us through this I mean I don't know if people quite understand how difficult it is to do what he's done like to be able to head the ball down at speed look the anticipation the job on the edge of the box is to be reactive to clear things to be able to have that the strength get us now the dribbling on your weaker right foot to be able to keep it so close to your body, checking your shoulder every time, making sure you've got the time and the space, fully deserved goal.
16:02Daniel Sturridge:This kid, what is just done there, this young man? I mean, come on, man. The strength, the agility and the power. Jamie, what do you think about it, brother? Oh, mate. As I say, I've seen it. I've seen it. Anyone, if you even look at some of his goals he scored in the Youth Cup against Manchester United at the Emirates last season, is just unbelievable. The pace and the power that he possesses. Like you say, he can transfer that ball from right foot to left foot. And he's just so calm that he even pulls his shorts down there. Like, you know, there is a swagger about this young man that I haven't seen with many footballers.
16:38I've seen some incredible, like I remember seeing Gerrard at 16, 17, and being blown away by his talent. But seeing this young guy progress and the talent that he possesses and coming on at 16 years of age and changing a Premier League game of this magnitude, because you have to put it into context. If they don't win today, Arsenal, this swings it massively back into Manchester City's favour. But he changed everything when he came on. If that was you, right, and you were going back into school on Monday, what would you be giving him? Me? I'd be giving... No one meant like...
17:12Daniel Sturridge:That's the vibe. I'm coming. And you know what I will say, though? How difficult it is to come off the bench. We know what that is. Coming to a game, the pace of the game, how difficult Everton made it for Arsenal, to be able to come on at that age and impact the game. Both goals came from him. You have to give the young man a wealth of credit because it is very, very difficult to be a game changer. And that's exactly what he was tonight. And I think you're exactly right, Daniel. And what I felt watching Arsenal today is I saw a lot of players, and I totally get it. I've been there. I've not won a title, but I know how to lose one.
17:43and their anxiety just comes on you and it transmits from the fans to the players. And I'm seeing Mikel Arteta. He's, you know, like a cat on a hot tin roof. You know, he's getting the anxieties getting to him. This young man came on and was just sort of like, it's okay, I'm here. I'm going to take care of this. And that was the difference in the game. It was absolutely incredible how he kept his nerve and never let anything affect him. All the others were letting it affect them. But it was also a big, bold decision from the manager, wasn't it, as you said, to actually throw him into the action when you needed a goal, when you needed to change the game.
18:15And that is exactly what Mikel Arteta did. And here he is now reflecting on it with David Craig. Mikel, I said to Victor Yoceres on the pitch, a match with many, many moments, but one moment is going to write all the headlines tomorrow. Young Max Dowman, 16 years, 73 days, now the youngest ever scorer in the Premier League. Just sum up, not just as a manager and a former player yourself, but also as a father. How special is that moment for a youngster at that tender age? Yeah, it was a great moment, especially the way the goal built up, you know, and we had like 10, 15 seconds to really enjoy actually what was about to happen.
18:57And it was magical, all the bench and all the players together, jumping off the crowd. It was a beautiful day. Can you remember being that age and can you remember what those kind of moments might have meant? No, nowhere near the level that he's at, obviously. He's not only the goal he has scored, I think he changed the game. Every time he got the ball, he speeded the game, he made things happen and it looked like we were more of a threat. So to do that at that age in this context with the pressure, the expectations to win the game, it's just not normal, obviously. We're talking a lot about his age, but what about the maturity that he's showing?
19:33How do you rate that at this moment in time? But it's so organic for him. He doesn't feel the pressure. He goes there, he gets the ball, stops on the ball. It's natural for him, and that's the best thing. So make sure that he does what he feels. And when you have such a talent, I'm sure good things are going to happen. When you sent on Victor and Max, you could sense in the stadium, I'm sure you could, the tension was building. What was the instructions other than just go out and win me the game? That is at the moment. The same with Gabi. I think all the players that came in, again, the impact that the Finals are having in the season is remarkable.
20:12Everybody is important, everybody is adding to the team. There are moments that we have to be patient because with all the dominance and amount of short situation that we have when you don't score, the anxiety is building and you have to stay composed, be relentless in your desire to win the game and make something happen. The team really had that experience today. Everyone, as we know, will be talking about Max, but Victor is the other part of that, Joe. So it's his 11th Premier League goal, 16 overall now for Alistair. Do you sense he's really growing into that role that you brought him into now?
20:44Yes, and he does so many good things for the team. And today he's got a massive goal. You have to be in the right moment, in the right spot. He said something was there and he helped us win the game. And of course, the all-important question in terms of the title race, the headlines will be what they'll be tomorrow. But what does this do in terms of the title race from where you could be by tonight? It could be as little as seven, it could be still ten. Well, the job done from our side in every level because I think the performance in many situations was very, very good. And what we are doing every three days, I think the players deserve a lot of credit.
21:17And very finally, it will be a special day in Arsenal's history. How special a moment do you put this down as? Very much. I think what we do is to create memories and to create moments. and I'm sure for many years people that was in the stadium today would say, I was in the stadium I was at the Emirates that day when that kid at 16 scored that goal in such an important moment of the season. Mikel, thank you. Thank you. In a few years' time, there'll probably be 400 ,000 people that would have witnessed that goal in that moment in the stadium. Those celebrations, Daniel, did that tell us that Mikel Arteta and everybody knew that was more than just a goal?
21:57Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, and Arteta knew and knows what Everton are all about. Just look at what it means to the players, though, and how happy they are for Max Downman as well. But I think for the team, they knew how difficult it was today. They felt the pressure. They felt like this is a really, really difficult game. The manager would have told them what it's like to play against Everton as well as them experiencing it over the years. And it was a tough match for them. It looked like it could have been a draw. it had a draw written all over it and then a moment of maybe not madness but you know a goal that was from a cross and a deflection and then boom you get it almost like a gift but then this goal is a moment of magic and it wasn't anticipated or expected.
22:41Daniel Sturridge:You don't see that. You don't see managers going over right. I mean they do, they rile up the fans and they get them on side and all of that stuff but you could see. The set piece guys who didn't score from one today. Just keep an eye on Mikel Arteta here because I think after all the sort of the excitement when the euphoria wears off. He's got something to say. It looked to me when I saw it live. To a section of the fans here.
23:05Yeah, it's all right. That's the passion. But we've seen these celebrations before when they've not won the title as well. They scored a late goal against Bournemouth and these things happened. So they've still got a long way to go. And you could see today, up until 74 minutes of Max came on, they were struggling. And they have to remember that. This is not going to be an easy season. every game has been a struggle. Everett were great today. I thought first half, a couple of really good moments. If they'd have scored that first goal, Rear made an unbelievable save down this side here. That goes in, everything changes.
23:34But they have a little bit of luck and obviously a good substitution. You're bringing on players at the right time, brave enough to bring on that young man. And obviously everything changes. You get those vital three points. And sometimes there is a point in the season that you do look back and reflect on a moment that can change things, that swings things in your way, in your favour, Daniel.
Read the full transcript
23:51Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, and this young man here changed the game completely. The reflection of it, he came on with a confidence that maybe we haven't seen. We haven't seen this from a player of his age in a very, very long time. The abilities that he showed tonight on display was brilliant. He brought his teammates on the ball. He was getting into pockets, drifting past players and making things happen. And that's what you're supposed to do coming off the bench. It's easy to say it, but to go and do it is a very, very difficult thing. This was the only surprise for me that that didn't go in the top corner. And the thing is, right, because we've seen him do it so many times.
24:21Daniel Sturridge:And the thing is, right, is to even have that thought about a 16 year old shows the level of quality that we know he possesses yeah this is this is wild this is genuinely wild that header then the strength get off touch right foot right foot and then he's off that's the importance of doing those you know when you go through the cones and you do the weaker foot you do the right foot and the left foot that's that's why when you train as a kid it's important to do both feet cool i'm left footed, I'm going to go ahead and do my left foot through the cones. That's why when you do the cones, you go through with your right foot.
24:54Daniel Sturridge:You time yourself. I remember I used to do that when I was a kid. You time yourself. Is that nature or nurture? I think it's a bit of both. I think he's got abilities that he's trained on and he can see he loves the game and he plays with a smile on his face. And I think you have to work on it. You get abilities from above and then it's, and now I've got to work on them. And there's a whole family sharing in that moment. Yeah, look, his dad there, he's so proud. There's his mum. Oh, incredible for them. What a moment. Amazing night. But it is funny with all the lot of players that sort of possess that, I would say, that difference.
25:25They have that left foot, you know, that can just drift past people and they make it look so effortless. And he possesses that. You know, the game is naturally so easy for him. Has such great balance, size, and you can just see it there. I mean, it will be an amazing moment for all of his family. They'll never forget it. But not every young star that shines brightly goes on to have an amazing career. That's just a fact. unfortunately. What is it going to have to take from Max Damman to go on and have the career that his talent is sort of saying that he could have?
25:55Daniel Sturridge:I mean continue doing what he's doing. It seems like he's got a very supportive family who's in the box. The club are supporting him very well in terms of his development. As long as he keeps his head on his shoulders which as you can see the players love him. They're keeping him on side. He's got older more senior English players in the dressing room that will nurture him, his personality, keep him in check and I think players like him with the talent that he's got deserve the respect and the understanding that it's going to take time. We know we can do these moments and it's going to take time for him to, I suppose, get into the team.
26:27Daniel Sturridge:But look, we can never doubt the quality this player's got. I think that's such a good point, Dan. And I think almost a senior player should have a duty or care as well. I look back to, you know, my career when I first signed for Liverpool and John Barnes was so influential on bringing me through. I was a 17-year-old young man that had just got into the first team. He helped me so much. I remember when Gerrard come through, I felt that I had to almost do what John had done for me and tried to help him. And not that he needed a lot, because he was such a great player. But I look at him and I look at, okay, where's your senior players, your role models?
26:55I think Declan Rice. It was good for Declan Rice. Mark Noble. Mark Noble took Declan Rice under his wing. People like Odegaard. Although they're a threat, which they inevitably are going to be, and Bakayosaka, he'll be looking over his shoulder going, wow, this young man's going to be incredible. You still, it's part of the football hierarchy. Do the right thing. Help him. Make sure he keeps his feet on the ground. Don't get too excited because everyone now, his life has just changed tonight. It was always going to change, but tonight is the night where everything's going to be different. He walks into restaurants, he's going to get the best table.
27:25It's not allowed in yet, really. Everything is going to be, people are going to just make such a fuss of that young man. They want to be part of him. Who are your mates? Who are the people you've got to make sure that, no, I don't need those people in my life. All these things, his mum and dad are going to have lovely people. but they're going to have to take control on that. Keep the circle small. Absolutely. That job's got harder as well, though, hasn't it? Absolutely. But the club will do really well in nurturing young players, but they've got to make sure they get it right. And he's going to need a lot of support, but I've got no doubt he'll have it.
27:54And first of all, a great moment for everybody. And of course, Manchester City are about to kick off any second now against West Ham United. That news will have come through to their dressing room shortly, won't it, as well?
28:04Daniel Sturridge:100 % yeah. And it wouldn't change anything for them psychologically. Logically, they know they've now got to win. They would have been getting a little bit excited, though, wouldn't they? Oh, yeah, of course they would. I'm thinking, oh, boys, listen, man, we go out there today. You know, we get the job done. But now it's like, OK, you know, business as usual. We've got to go out here. We've got to win. We have to. And they're going to feel a little bit more added pressure if West Ham can keep them, you know, nil-nil 70 minutes or whatever it may be. They'll have the same feelings and the sentiments that Arsenal had.
28:34Daniel Sturridge:And then moments of magic at the end have to be the difference. Of course, it's in Arsenal's hands. So they should probably be our focus, first of all. And of course, they're still juggling four competitions and it's Champions League this week and then the crucial Carabao Cup final next weekend. And then after the international break, they return with FA Cup action. And then we're into the serious business of the Premier League again at this point. Three of the next four are at home, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Fulham. Sandwiched with that fascinating game at the Etihad. on April the 19th. Could that be significant that Arsenal have got three of their next four at home?
29:12Given the atmosphere there this evening, given the joy and the euphoria that was around the place, maybe taking away a little bit of that tension in the process.
29:20Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, and no game's easy. We know that for a fact, right? But now that they've won that game today, I think it even elevates their belief even higher because this was a game that, again, the anticipation would have been. It would have been a draw. Now they know, listen, boys, we can do this. we can have those moments of magic. Remember back in the days you watch Manchester United and you see last minute goals and you think, oh, it's inevitable. You know, I wouldn't say I had that feeling with Arsenal even today. But when you see Max Dalman come on and you see him have a moment of magic, you go, you know what?
29:50Daniel Sturridge:They're showing that grit. They're showing that title winning mentality. And you can't doubt them now. They can go all the way as long as they keep doing this. These are the nights that feel special. These are the nights that make champions. Do you know who I think is going to deserve a medal at the end of this season? I think the Arsenal fans are going to deserve a medal because they have been put through the ringer at home, particularly, I think, Jamie, for a lot of this season as well. They haven't done it easily, have they? No, they haven't. That's the emotion, not winning a title, and they won it so badly.
30:16And people could say, oh, you have to stay calm. Don't get onto the players. But it's natural. You paid your money. You want this so badly. You know, you've not won it for many, many years. The Invincibles, the last time they won it. 22 years, yeah. If they'd have said at that time that you won't win a league for 22 years, no one would have believed you. But this is the case. and I think it's credit to what Mikel Arteta has done. You know, he's got them into this position right now. It's, I think this is the best, out of all the others, this is, this feels like it because I just don't think Manchester City are as strong as what they have been previously but they are going to make them work hard.
30:50There is no foregone conclusion just yet but they are in a fantastic position. How old was Max Dam, was Theo World Cup, by the way, when he went to the World Cup? Go on. 17, 17. Was he? Yeah. I hadn't played a lot for Arsenal at that point. Let's see. Wouldn't be the craziest thing, would it? Sky Sports main event are leaving us to go to Sawgrass, where Ludwig Oberg is looking in control at the top of the leaderboard at the players. This to go, three clear on the sixth. What do you think, Daniel? Is it in? This has got to go down. Oh, it stays up, it stays up. He's won over today because he was 12 under yesterday, wasn't he?
31:29It's getting exciting at the players. There's lots of European interest, the top leaderboard as well. That is on Sky Sports' main event, Sky Sports Premier League next, as we continue to round up an exciting evening of football with a special look, not just at Arsenal next, but at Stamford Bridge, where Newcastle United have pulled what has been a rare away victory on the road this season. Anton Deck enjoyed that one in the capital tonight. And Eddie Howside certainly did as well.
32:25We'll be right back.
32:39What a win for Newcastle United. One goal was enough at Stamford Bridge tonight. To the delight of the watching Anton Deck, Chelsea's frustration continues having drop points at home against Leeds and Burnley. In draws, they are now beaten by Newcastle United, winning just their fourth away game of the season in the Premier League. It's a real disappointment for Liam Rossini off the back of their defeat to PSG by five goals for two in the Champions League this week. Newcastle also involved in that competition, drawing with Barcelona. They head there to the Nou Camp this week. 22 shots from Chelsea, the most they've had in a league game this season, but couldn't manage to find a way past Aaron Ramsdale, who kept a clean sheet.
33:22And Johnny Phillips was there to mop up their reaction, starting with victorious manager Eddie Howe. Eddie, what were the qualities your side showed in that victory today? I think defensive mentality was incredible today, especially off the back of a massive week for us on Tuesday. I thought we were really, really good off the ball today. In every respect, we pressed well first half, we were better deep per second half, and we rode our luck at times a little bit in terms of they had a few chances in the second half, but I think the amount of times we've been hurt this season, I think we've more than deserved it.
33:55Such an intense game, I still can't believe you've caught me. probably too early after the game here but just everyone, the blocks in the box defending crosses everything we want to be as a team everything we've always been was there today Liam, obviously a lot of frustrations in the manner of that defeat how do you assess it in all? Frustration, frustration first 15-20 minutes dominate the game
34:18Daniel Sturridge:attack wave of attack in the first 15-20 minutes we switch off on the press it's a really poor goal They play a straight pass through the middle of the pitch and they go 1-0 up and it gives them something to hold on to. And then the rest of the game for me was attack v defence. Credit to Newcastle and Eddie because they defended their lead and they were happy to sit back and we didn't have that mental freshness to unlock them, which is what ultimately cost us the game today. When you talk about it being a poor goal, you don't often see goals like that in the Premier League going straight through the middle.
34:48Was it just positionally caught short? Yeah, there was an issue with cover and there was an issue with understanding on the press.
34:55Daniel Sturridge:That will come. It's new in terms of what we're asking the players to do, but there's still a lot to happen. Did you think it was an unusual type of goal because it looked to go straight down the middle? Yeah, they're back line. I think they were playing man for man, so we knew we could get him behind them. But it did seem very open. And when I seen Joe running through, I was just hoping he lifted his head up and seen me, and he did. Every time the ball bounced in the box, it just fell behind one of our players instead of in front of them, or they would just get a block on, there's a header gone wide, Rhys hits the post, we have chances, but overall there was a lack of cutting edge and that's something we need to improve.
35:30It's a really important week for you now coming up. You'll have to ask your players to go again and go again, but to get a victory here like that under these circumstances, it'll do them a lot of good, won't it? Yeah, a lot of good, a lot of confidence, I think, from not just the win today, but the performance against Barcelona as well. And yeah, two huge games now to finish off this week, but mouth-watering for us, and I think we can go there in good spirits after today. Yeah, two huge games for Newcastle United coming up. First Barcelona, then Sunderland next week with revenge. Very much on their minds.
35:58But as Johnny was saying in his questions there, slightly strange goal because, like we saw the tap-in for Victor Jokeres, we saw a tap-in for Anthony Gordon. It's just his second goal from open play this season. Where does this come from, Jamie? Well, there's a couple of mistakes they make. You can see that the ball gets played inside. I think that's Rhys James there. And then Willock just runs off the back of Fofana. Just keep your eye on Fofana there. and I can't see it, but it's not on the screen though, Dave. But you can see that as he plays that ball down the side, it's too open. You can't let someone run in as easy as that.
36:30And then Wesley Fofana has to sprint. He has to follow that run. He doesn't. And obviously then a player with that kind of pace shouldn't happen, Daniel.
36:38Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, I mean, for me, we talk about Anthony Gordon talking about man for man. You have the midfielder in Rhys James in this moment chasing Joel Willock and Trevor Chaloba's position is more with Walter Marder, which is why the space is there. and of course, you know, Fofana's not aware of Gordon, which he has to be. You've got to run as fast as you possibly can to get back and ensure that the slide rule passes there for you to just have an open net. How good is that from Joe Willett, though? Just to be able to, just say, because there's a lot of players now, they get an opportunity to see the whites of the goal, I'm going to score.
37:09But just to have that composure, that quality, and also selfless, just to give it to your teammate. There you go.
37:16Daniel Sturridge:That's it for me there. Anthony Gordon wants to score a lot. Fofana isn't prepared to do the same run on the defensive side of things. Well, look at that there. If we can see this here, there's the two of them. Look, he catches up three yards on him. That's just really poor. You can talk about, you know, all you like about the press was wrong, this was wrong. No, that, my friend, is wrong. That's wrong. Sprint, sprint, sprint. He doesn't because he doesn't believe that he's going to pass it to you. Then he has the audacity to put his arms out. I don't know what he's going to play. Look, what? Just run with him.
37:46If you run with him, you stop the goal. Liam Messina saying teething problems, though, still, tactically.
37:51Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, and look, he's had a really good start. I mean, you know, the last few weeks haven't been what they want him to be. You talked about a lack of cutting edge. You know, you're creating opportunities. And Joao Pedro has been brilliant in terms of scoring goals, but he needs his teammates also to step up and score goals for the team. Defensively, clearly that central area being so wide, it's defensive tactical problems is potentially what it is. Is that a sore one off the back of what happened at PSG as well, Daniel? Yeah, confidence-wise, because they played brilliant for 70, 75 minutes. So then they've come in now, having conceded three goals at the end of that game, and you're sort of thinking we're potentially out of the Champions League to then come into this game, whereas I think Newcastle's mentality was a little bit more confident.
38:36Daniel Sturridge:They played brilliant in the week against Barcelona. They come into this game with an air of confidence, and now they're going to go into the next game feeling the same. It gives Liverpool a huge incentive for tomorrow. Obviously, they've got Tottenham Hotspurs at home. They'll look at that one. They can leapfrog them. Then they put themselves into that top four. But it also gives these two the massive incentive, doesn't it? Everyone's been writing Aston Villa off in recent weeks. Yeah, well, there's a huge game there. Magic's night and Aston Villa tomorrow. It's going to be a huge Sunday in the sort of top five race, we believe it will be with the Champions League.
39:05But that was a sore one for Chelsea. Because like you say, I knew it was at the game. There were a lot of positives. It looked like a massive threat on the break against PSG. but today, especially when they go a goal behind, they don't seem to be able to just turn that around and throw it away, burning. He used the analogy, didn't he, of like setting fire to points. You can't afford to do that. But there has been a lot of positives but today that will really hurt that result. The other strange thing that came out of the game was this pre-match huddle which we've seen a few times that they love to do for some reason on the centre spot.
39:34But unfortunately this time the referee Paul Tierney at the start of the game was standing on the centre spot but it didn't stop Chelsea. yeah who gains out of this what is anyone gaining out of this well a lot of fans would love to have a cuddle with Cole Palmer wouldn't they so he's had a nice cuddle there so I don't know what that's for
39:49Daniel Sturridge:he knows what he's doing though move out of the thing what are you doing hold on you're blaming the referee why are you getting your backside out of the thing okay but what is that huddle we're doing our thing we're doing our thing but what is that though explain that what is the thing I don't know what it is I don't know because he's getting tell us what they could gain from that situation why do they have to do it there I don't know why they're doing it there, but I also don't know why the ref's in there. There will be some modern day thinking about you are... I don't know. I can't think... You could do the huddle in front of your fans.
40:18You've got the Matthew Harden stand there. You do it in front of them. To do it in the centre circle, somebody somewhere has come up with something that this gives you an advantage to show that you're strong or whatever. What can you...
40:28Daniel Sturridge:Whatever that superstition is, it's not working, bro. It's just that it's... Just maybe do it somewhere else now. You know what I'm saying? Maybe in your own box or something. I don't know, but it didn't work. So it's like, if it's a superstition, you can do it somewhere else now because it's broke. Yeah. Maybe they should all do the max down and walk into school. Before kickoff. It's been one of those nights. And Arsenal will have the final say tonight, as will Everton, because they certainly played their part in the Emirates tonight in what was a pretty pulsating finish, which has put Arsenal 10 clear at the top.
41:08but we'll hear from David Moyes next.
41:36We'll see you next time. Jordan Nobbs and Nikita Paris. Just search for Sky Sports wherever you get your podcasts. For now, though, let's get back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
41:58Two substitutes changed the game for Arsenal tonight. 16-year-old Max Dowman putting that ball in which Jordan Pickford couldn't deal with and another sub, Victor Jokerez, tucked it away for his 11th in the league this season and with Pickford up the pitch, looking for an equaliser, Damian it was, who kept his calm and composure, that incredible skill to become the youngest scorer in Premier League history. Everton beaten, but they put up a real fight. Let's hear from David Moyes now with David Craig. David, when you go away from here, is that a difficult result for you to fathom, given your team's contribution to the game?
42:32I'm really, really disappointed that we didn't get something from the game because we certainly had worked hard enough and earned it. small things. Jordan maybe could do a little bit better with the goal. He gets a bit of it, but not enough of it. But I have to say, look, Jordan's made some unbelievable saves for us, which have won his game. So today, we just needed it at the last minute there, when we needed him. We just didn't quite able to stop it. But other than that, there's no problems at all with the players. Great performance with our players. Put in a great shift. Difficultly officiating.
43:07Coming to Arsenal. So, a lot of praise for the players. Our commentary team said, particularly in the first half, that they sensed you had those bigger chances, bigger moments. Were they just ones that perhaps you needed to capitalise on in a stadium like this, playing against a team like that? I agree. I thought Rhea had more saves than Jordan tonight. He made a couple of great saves, and obviously the one we hit the post with. I think the bigger thing for me was the block. I'm getting told it was Califori's block on Dwight's effort. It was amazing. Scorpion kick, basically. Yeah, well, I mean, it tells you a little bit of it because of how good they are defensively.
43:45They're wholly defending their goal, trying not to let empty score and blocking shots or the keeper saving. So you have to praise them for that and it looked as if we were going to get a goal there. You had to shuffle things round at the back today. Michael Keane came in. How impressive was he today for you? I thought both boys done brilliantly well. I thought they dealt with most things Arsenal offered up. Arsenal started the game brilliantly well. The first 20 minutes, they were right on it. As good as I've seen Arsenal for a little while in the opening part. But we've done enough to keep them out and we grew into the game a little bit.
44:18You made it clear on the build-up to this game that you thought Arsenal were the best team in the country at this moment in time. So it was a big test here today. You've been very good, particularly away from home, and you've got European ambitions. what do you take from this today having pushed Arsenal as hard as you've had to do? We take loads from it that we've moved up but I wanted us to get something from the game today I felt it was a challenge for us to see if we could step into it could really push Arsenal I think we've done I think we've done the pushing we only lost to Arsenal at home 1-0 with a penalty kick and we should have had one as well so we've pushed Arsenal close in the two games.
45:02If you can maintain the standards and the form that you've shown on occasions this season, on numerous occasions, are you still very much in that conversation for Europe? It's been eight years for Everton. You've said it's too long for a club of that size. Are you right in that conversation? Well, we're close enough to be thinking about it. But I'm right up for the fight and the players are as well because we know that's what it's going to take. We're going to have to win some really big games in the running if we have to achieve it. Today, we felt as if it was one of them way we could have a go at but the players done a great job we just pulled up a little shot I don't want to get you into trouble in any way but you mentioned you know some of the decisions did you sense today that perhaps some injustice went your way I'm laughing at you asking me the question really yeah so that's it appreciate it thank you take care well very happy with his team's performance but of course not with the outcome he felt his team deserved something from I'm at Daniel, has he got a point?
45:59Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, they were brilliant tonight. You know, they worked so hard all over the pitch. Irigboenham in midfield was brilliant. NDI showed some moments of magic and McNeil did as well. And I thought all around the pitch, they gave absolutely everything. Like he said, it was that moment at the end where maybe, you know, Pickford could have done a little bit better. But all in all, they fought so hard, created chances. He couldn't ask any more from his team besides get a point. They came close, particularly in that first half, Jamie. Absolutely. Dwight McNeil, a couple of great efforts. Very unlucky not to score only at the post.
46:31And this is really the first half. They looked the side that was maybe at times more likely. This one here, Calafiore does brilliantly. Improvises to make that block. Could show they do defend their goal really, really well. As David Moyes said, then he's still alive. He comes into an area here. You can see him at the bottom of the picture. Just checks his shoulder a couple of times. Declan Rice comes to close him. Looks like he's in a play of one-two. He doesn't. He goes on his own. Uses Gabriel. Bends it round him. That's such a good effort. It's just that Xay can't quite work his feet out in time.
47:00But this is brilliant by Calafiore, Daniel. Yeah, absolutely brilliant. He can sort of see it coming, can't he? See it happening and he gets himself in that position.
47:07Daniel Sturridge:Yeah, and of course, you know, this here, rebounds off the post so quickly thinking, can you get something on it and guide it towards the goal? But it was just so fast. It was a great effort from McNeil and unfortunately not to put it in the back of the net. This might be really harsh, because you were a goal scorer, Daniel. Do you think if he was an out and out, and I'm talking like one of those foxes in the box, he might have anticipated that a little bit? Yeah, potentially. I'm his biggest fan, by the way, so it's not being disrespectful. Yeah, absolutely. Potentially, yeah. And that save by Rhea, by the way, the one previously, was magical.
47:40Daniel Sturridge:So difficult to make saves like that. But Everton caused big problems for Arsenal today. And no Tarkovsky. On another day, they get a point for sure. Yeah, exactly. Great effort. They played really, really well. Sorry? Could they push on for Europe? They're in a great place. You know, and they're confident. You know, Jack Grealish has been out injured. He was flying early in the season and it hasn't really affected them. They've brought in young players as well. And yeah, they go from strength to strength. They're in a nice position. They are. And it's great to see because the last few years it's been so tough for Everton.
48:07But David Moyes has come into the club and stabilised it. And not just stabilised it, they're playing good football. They're hard to beat. They're resilient. And when you see the likes of Brentford, Everton, even Aston Villa have had a really good season up there competing. You know, Newcastle, and Bournemouth had a little bit of a bad run, but it's nice to see a bit of a change in the guard there. So if Everton and Brentford were to get into Europe this year, it would be a fantastic achievement from both of those clubs. A couple of big decisions. We saw the penalty at half-time, which didn't go in Arsenal's way, and maybe David Moyes is referring to a decision that didn't go in his team's favour as well, with Beto getting clear here, we think.
48:42And then there's a little bit of holding, maybe. Is he denying a goal-scoring opportunity? I think this is the best that our team have come up with when they're trying to find this big decision that they were frustrated with. No, that's not for me, no. Daniel? Nah, soft. I think they got away with a penalty in the first half as well that wasn't given. So they can be, you know. They would say that they should have had a penalty in the game, in the first game of the season when they met Hill Dickinson. Yeah, absolutely. So you get him on the, on Tierno, Barry. All in all, I thought they were fabulous tonight.
49:10They were so unlucky not to get someone out of that game. Yeah. Jamie, thank you very much. Daniel, thank you very much as well. I'm going to try and walk back into my house like that tonight and see how that goes down. If I'd done that at my school, by the way. Tomorrow, tennis. It's the WTA final. First of all, Sabalenka against Ria Bukina at 5.30 on Sky Sports Tennis. And it's the men's final at 8.30, both from Indian Wells. And it is a packed Super Sunday for you. Build up from 1 o 'clock, three games at 2. Man United against Aston Villa, Forest Fulham, Crystal Palace against Leeds United, all key games themselves.
49:50And then at 4.30 we're watching Liverpool take on Spurs. We just can't find a win right now. Monday Night Football, Champions League chasing Brentford, taking on an improving Wolves. Thierry Henry will be our special guest. As ever from 6.30. I'll look forward to hearing what he's got to say about Max Dallman. That'd be interesting. It's very much on my mind. Before that, Jamie, it is season three of Borla League coming your way. I recognise this guy and this guy. Look at Mark giving it a blue still. Tepo trio, baby. Let's go. There are some new managers as well, clearly, as well. We ain't worried about it.
50:28Season three coming your way at 5 o 'clock. I thought you were going to get the sack this year, to be honest. We ain't worried about it. There's a lot of talk about it.
50:32Daniel Sturridge:This is our year. Is it? It's our year. Wait, you've improved the team? We've got some players in? We've got some top signings. We've got Old Brighton. Really? I want to be on Chloe's side. I'm backing her, whatever she's doing. It's going to be a good game. We will hear from Thierry Henry on Monday night about the history maker who is Max Damman, who has maybe changed the course of Arsenal's season just when it looked like they were going to be frustrated by Everton tonight. Off he came from the bench. Involved with the first goal, scored the second, the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer, and Arsenal now 10 points clear at the top.
