Transcript
Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:06The Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Welcome along. We were in the northeast for Monday night football as Newcastle played champions Liverpool at St James's Park. Here's how the game finished.
0:28Two wins out of two for the champions but they were mighty lucky in this one and they have to rely on a 16 year old substitute sent on by Arneslott to win a game for them that seemed to have slipped away. The spirit shown by Eddie Howes Newcastle has to be praised to the highest. They were two down within 20 seconds of the start of the second half and yet despite being a man down, despite injuries, they fought a way back in through Bruno Gimurais and through Willa Sula, a substitute sent on by Howe at a time where they are we're told struggling for a striker. Ekotike scored again for Liverpool to add to the goal that had been scored earlier in the game for them to give them that 2-0 lead by Grafenberg.
1:22One or two tempers have frayed in a game that was always going to be high stakes because of all the talk around Alexander Isak leading into it and Newcastle's problems added to now with the fact that their makeshift striker Anthony Gordon is due for suspension after his red card here and they've picked up a series of injuries as well Tonali, Joe Olynton and Fabian Scher, all casualties tonight but the smiles at the end of the evening belong to Liverpool and in particular to the teenager who won it for them, Newcastle 2, Liverpool three that is the most extraordinary game of football I think any of us have seen for a long time that young man just 16 years old not 17 until a couple of days with the final twist in a second half which went one way and then dramatically the other Thierry how would you How do you sum it up?
2:25Last time I really thought that Liverpool was going to control the game in the second half and straight away if he scores and you would like to think that it was going to be over. And that's when Newcastle started to play and boss the game even with 10 men. They bossed the game already with 11 but they bossed the game even with 10 men which was difficult to watch at one point. You're looking at the champions struggling against a team that's playing with 10 men but it can happen, right? And then you're like, OK, 2-2, that's going to be a tough one for Liverpool, a tough one to swallow. And then obviously we see him, he has Rio on the back of his shirt, we're going to call him Rio, but so was Sly.
3:03To have the awareness to let the ball go through your legs. And I know he didn't touch the ball, but that for me should go down as an assist.
3:09David Jones:I think what we've seen tonight is possibly one of the worst performances from a winning team and one of the best performances from a losing team. Liverpool won't care right now of course they'll be absolutely ecstatic but Eddie Howe's men and his team tonight were absolutely outstanding it seemed like it was game over at 2-0 didn't it James? it did but that crowd the intensity they played with I mean I actually fear what the score might have been if it was 11-11 you know to put in that performance with 10 men what's your hunch? I think Liverpool Lucas would have won the game I think they were far better than Liverpool in every aspect I agree with that Thierry I do think so, but yet again, even being superior in the first half, Liverpool won 1-0 up.
3:53And you can put it on maybe today on that's how at times a team that's champion, that's how they win. Although in the second half you would like to think that they didn't play really like champions. They didn't have that hang on the game even in the first half, to be fair. But you were talking about the comeback of Newcastle and I have to talk about Grouw Maddox. He was outstanding, really. What he did, the way he went forward, the way he grabbed the game by the neck and how he went forward. You lose Johnington on the way, you lose Tonali on the way. The guy played almost alone. You've seen the big guns there tonight, the chairman Yasser Al-Rumayen, who's not there too often.
4:37I think the last game he was at was the Carabao Cup final. There he is, consoling Eddie Howe, Jamie Rubin, and fellow owner on the touchline there as well. They've got some big things to sort out, Jamie, in the next week.
4:49David Jones:They have, but I think they knew what they had there in terms of the manager, the quality of the player, the connection between the pitch and the supporters. This is, you know, listen, people talk about it being a special football club. Every supporter thinks theirs is a special football club. There's no doubt the passion and intensity up there and what Eddie Howe has brought to them. and that tonight even though they'll be absolutely devastated tonight now with what happened in the last kick of the game I think there'll be a feeling when they get in tomorrow morning at the training ground about we were outstanding we were proud and I think the supporters will be exactly the same I think they're in a little bit of shock they can't quite believe what they've seen they thought they'd managed to grab a point and it was snatched from them 90 plus 10 minutes which means we have three sides who've started the season with maximum points.
5:44Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and the champions Liverpool. Four points so far for Chelsea who's had that 5-1 win on Friday night and Nottingham Forest who got a point at Palace yesterday. Three points for City, Sunderland and first wins for Everton, Bournemouth and Brentford this weekend to get them on to three points and so too Burnley. Leeds brought back down to earth at the Emirates. Have their first win on the board, two draws for Fulham and for Crystal Palace, one point from two games for Newcastle United. So too for Manchester United for Aston Villa who await their first goal for Brighton and nothing so far for Wolves and West Ham United.
6:38There's more live sport for you this evening because on Sky Sports Tennis the US Open continues right now. Jack Draper safely through earlier incidentally. US Open continuing on Sky Sports Tennis.
7:01And new film coming your way on Thursday, new series I should say, Atomic, starring Alfie Allen on Sky Atlantic.
7:13Well, it all went off tonight at St James' Park. Much more to come from Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher. An extraordinary game which we will do our best to make sense of when we come back. There was the Anthony Gordon red card, the lead before half-time, extended just after the break, and then came the Newcastle fight back. Spearheaded by Bruno Gimares. William Asula thought he'd snatched a point. Rio Ongomoa, the boy with the final say. The Reds have a new hero.

For now, though, let's get back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
9:14What an extraordinary moment to announce yourself to the football world. Rio Ngomoua, 16 years old, Liverpool's youngest scorer on his Premier League debut, off the bench to win it in 90 plus 10 minutes for the champions who've been pushed all the way by the 10 men of Newcastle United. Quite a sensational end to the most absorbing, chaotic I described it at half time and it certainly was through the second half as well. 3-2 is obviously the most important line there. Anthony Gordon sent off in stoppage time of the first half. But still, Newcastle United had 10 shots to Liverpool's five, the fewest in the Premier League under Arna's slot.
10:04They also had a higher expected goals count, more touches in the opposition box, almost three times as many crosses, Liverpool with more possession. and they ran out winners in the final seconds of this breathless football match. One young man at the start of his footballing journey, Virgil van Dijk, 34 years old, has seen it all and he's giving his verdict now to Juliet Farrington. Virgil, that was intense, probably what you expected. There was aggression, there was everything, there were injuries, they were sending offs and there was a last-minute winner in added time from a 16-year-old. Yeah, obviously we all know it's a difficult place to come.
10:47We all know that there was a lot of oil on the fire, I would say, this week in order to get especially Newcastle fired up. And what happened tonight, obviously, was expected. I think for us the disappointed part is that we conceded two of set pieces and that shouldn't happen. But overall, great three points, move on. and focus on the next one. How much credit do you give Newcastle? Because they looked as if they had 11 players on the pitch towards the end. Yeah, you know, obviously free kicks, corner kicks, obviously then the pressure gets on and they have the quality. I think if you look at all the traditional top six here last year, I think there's only a couple that actually managed to beat them.
11:35So it's always a difficult place to come. And it was today the same. I think I enjoy this type of atmosphere as well, so I was really looking forward to it. But I think we could have made it a little bit easier if you don't concede those set pieces and then you give them the boost and the feeling and the drive with the fans behind them of course. But we managed to get the three points and we move on. You say you enjoy these kind of evenings, these nights at St James' Park, but you yourself were involved in that sending off on the receiving end of that foul. What did Anthony Gordon say to you as he was trying to talk to you on the pitch?
12:12Well, I said to him, if there's no sending off, then I don't understand football. So I think it was already strange that the manager has to go to the monitor, in my opinion. Well, listen, unfortunately, these things happen in football. If you meant it or not, it happened. We move on. That's it. A word on Rio. I know we spoke about him briefly at the start of this interview. But to finish it off, it was the coolest of finishes and at such a young age as well, just coming on, Premier League debut, boom. Yeah, for sure. I think it's a dream debut for him. I think that whole attack was quite good.
12:47Harvey started it on the right-hand side and obviously I think Feddy did the dummy. So it was a perfect, perfect attack. We stayed calm towards the end as well, trying to find the right solution in order to score a goal. and we did it. So I'm very, very pleased for Rio. I've mentioned it before to him already. It's all about, it's all a start now. He has to keep working hard and stay humble, but definitely have to enjoy this because these nights are, you can't take for granted, of course, if you're in his position. And I'm sure with the players that we have, he will be back in training and having a hard session tomorrow again and then we carry on.
13:27I saw Curtis celebrating with him at the end, celebrating, spraying him with a bottle of water because that's all they've got at hand. How long does it take, Virgil, to get that rhythm and to find that rhythm that you became champions last season? Games. That's the only way. I think there were many good things today. Obviously, what I said, I think the beginning was very intense. All was expected. If you're going to try and be sure that you're the best team on the ball, they will come and attack you from behind and press them with the fans behind them. so we had to be a little bit more direct.
13:59And at a certain point when the fans started to quiet down a little bit, then you have time to play. And I think we did that well. Like I said, you know, it's a very tough place to come. And with their fans behind them, great fans, it's always difficult to come. Rest well. Thank you. Thank you very much. See you. The most remarkable end to an extraordinary football match. And we will go through it blow by blow. but let's just focus on that winning moment. I think it felt like at 2-2 we'd seen the last of the drama, but no.
14:35David Jones:Well, if there was going to be any drama, it felt like it would be a Newcastle goal. There were set pieces at the end and it feels like this was the only time when we look at the goal when Liverpool had almost a period of possession of pushing Newcastle further back. Arnestot had made the substitutions and what Liverpool end up doing is they end up getting players As you should always do Between the midfield And the opposition's back foot Especially when you've got the extra man That's what you do You just keep making passes Simple passes Until you get someone In a really dangerous area Newcastle obviously still Probably still wanting to win the game They've got the Carrad up And they get really aggressive In this midfield area here So they get tight there Now you could say Have they got too tight But if they win the ball there As they had been doing all night here Maybe they go on a counter attack but that means that they've enticed a couple of players in Liverpool so then they've got the space between the lines and you see the space there for that man Chiesa in acres of space as we just said the players between the lines and then they get outnumbered because two or three of the midfield players jumped I think it was on Graven Birch but Mo Salah will get the assist but the assist is Dominic Sabozlice who was absolutely outstanding in this game tonight playing it right back Talk to me here about the composure that this young man shows 16 years old, his Premier League debut, and as soon as Subozlai steps over it, he knows this is his moment.
16:02Composure, the ball is coming well, on the ground, Subozlai knows he's there, but you know, you're like, oh, if I score, this is going to be amazing. Look, he slows down, he bounces a bit, and then guide it. He does guide it, and then you can enjoy it. But it seems that there's so much conviction about that, Sean. Oh, you have to be, but the ball is inviting, though. And you also coming the right way. Everything was perfect for you to hit the target and score. And then obviously if he did put it in, we're talking about it, he could have missed it. But you know what? You know what I liked about him?
16:36Rio. As soon as he came on and he had the ball, he went straight away to play his 1v1. There was a 1v3. He didn't care. He took the ball at desire, will. And he got his reward at the end, being high and wide and the awareness of the team, bodies between the lines. But again, I'm with you. You don't have to touch a ball to have an assist for me. What he did, he moved everybody, not everybody obviously, but the right back away to make sure that he could free a real subverside there that has to be his assist, or at least two assists. It's a historic moment for Liverpool Football Club. Not the fact that they've won a game so late on.
17:16They've done that hundreds of times. But this is their youngest scorer in history, Jamie. me.
17:21David Jones:Wow, it's difficult to create history at Liverpool because the club's got such great history but for a young man, and listen it's been the weekend of young players coming in, you obviously think of what Arsenal had with Darwin coming on but there's been something about this lad in pre-season where Liverpool supporters are getting really excited and Louis Diaz has moved on, he was the competition with Cody Gakpo on the left and there's a feeling of Liverpool need to replace Louis Diaz but what do you do when you've got a young player like this? That is definitely going to be in the minds now of the Liverpool hierarchy in terms of what they do in the next week.
17:55David Jones:Because when someone has an impact like that as such a young player, that's just not enough now. I mean, I'm not talking about him playing every week, but he's shown himself in a big moment, high-pressured moment, composure at such a delicate stage of the game. You can't not see him now on the bench and coming on in games for the next two or three months. So he's got to be involved. Does he need to play? Or play? It's a bit early. for the playing, but he announced himself. Playing, it's a bit early, but I'm very happy for him being able to finish like he finished. He looked like a player that I've been playing for a very long time, how composed he was.
18:35I love the celebration, but like I said, as soon as he came on the field, he had that desire, that will that he wanted to change the game. Grandstand finish to what has been an extraordinary football match tonight at St. James' Park. and here is the winning boss, Arne Slot, speaks to us live now. Well, congratulations first of all, Arne. How would you sum up the 90 plus 10 minutes that we've just experienced? Now, when I heard you correctly, you were saying a football match. I'm not too sure if I saw a football match today. It was set-piece after set-piece, long throw. It didn't have a lot to do with tactics, what I said before the game, but I liked a lot how we stood strong.
19:22Very difficult, first half hour, 45 minutes, but we didn't collapse at all. We stood strong, and as a result of that we came 1-0 up. They, going down to Dan Mann, you would expect that that is a big plus for us, but when a goalkeeper takes every free kick, then there's not so much help if you are one player up. and that's why it was so difficult for us to bring the 2-0 over the line. Boss, congratulations. As you said, Jamie and I played a lot of games like that back in the days. Trust us. But Jamie and I spotted something on the free kicks. A lot of the free kicks, the line that you were having wherever they were trying to throw the ball in, you had it very low.
20:13The line was very low. And on the goal, Van Dijk decided to go really high. And what was the thought process of that? You got punished, and it's easy now because you got punished. It's easy for us to bring it up. But you did it the whole game. You played low to attack the ball, and on that one, you went high. True. I don't think it's fair to blame Virgil. It's a combination. he has contact with us at the bench. All the other ones were further up the pitch so we know what their idea is. They bring the ball to the D. Then Bern is there attacking a ball trying to make it difficult. There were a lot of difficult situations for us coming off that.
20:52So either a second ball or a throw in or another cutter kick. So at that moment of time we decided that because the ball was so deep so deep that it was smarter not to get a second ball inside our 18-yard box again. But that was definitely the wrong decision in that moment, looking back at it. For all that you said about the style of football that you faced tonight, Arne, having taken the lead just right at the start of the second half, were you disappointed with what your team gave you from that point on in the second period? I think your first shot after going 2-0 up was the winning goal. Yeah, we didn't play well enough with the ball.
21:34every time when we came in the end phase of an attack, our attackers immediately tried to force something, which never led to anything, a few crosses that ended up behind the goal. But like I said, I have to look back at it, but I don't think there was so much open play to be played. And as I said, in a set piece, a long throw and a long ball from the goalkeeper, you don't need an extra... Yeah, it's always nice to have an extra man, but it's not as beneficial as if they want to bring the ball out from the back and we can press them. So, yes, with the ball, the one and only attack that was good in the second, apart from maybe the 2-0, but after that, that was the one that led to the goal, which was a great attack.
22:19And for the first time, we went from right to the middle to the left and a great goal for a 16-year-old.
22:26David Jones:Arnett, the impact of the substitution the young boy Rio has caused huge excitement I think amongst Liverpool supporters certainly in the pre-season games and on the fact of Luis Diaz moving on does it make you almost change maybe your thought process in terms of maybe replacing Luis Diaz in this next week because you've got such a young special talent like Rio? Yeah, we have and he's shown that already a few times and what I like maybe most from our players is that after the 2-2, I think we had to defend five set pieces, three throw-ins and two free kicks. I don't know how many, maybe I exaggerate a bit.
23:06And that wasn't a moment for me to bring Rio and Javi in because the both of them are not so tall. But I did feel because it was 2-2 to bring two players in that can do something special in a moment. And then it's always nice that he scores a goal. I do remember, Jamie, before the game,
23:29David Jones:I'm delighted to be proved wrong, boss. I can assure you. Yeah, I know. But you were right. Last season, I could bring in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz and Dominic Subaslay. But the end result is not the same because last season, we were 3-2 up in the last minute and they scored the free all. And today, it was 2-2 and we could score in the last minute. But I think this is also what makes the Premier League special. Maybe it wasn't the best game in terms of tactics or in terms of playing football, but I think every fan everywhere around the world enjoyed watching this game of football. Also, because their fans were amazing in terms of the help they gave the home team.
24:07Absolutely, Arne, it was a great watch. And when that ball falls to Rio with 100 minutes on the clock, did you expect him to score? it was a big chance and he's a player that that that can finish really well for his age so how firm his shot was you don't see this often and for a 16 year old i did hear someone say afterwards in the dressing room i'm not going to say who it was but i probably would have taken that ball have a first touch and then finish it off but he's so confident that's also what i like because the first ball he got he wasn't afraid he immediately took someone on and when the second player game he even got across him and for him to score that goal is not completely coincidence because for his age he's a really good finisher as well.
24:57It was an amazing finish as was the second goal. Did you actually see it did you Arne? No, I was still inside. I heard people cheering, so being happy, and I was like, this can't be a red card for us, because then the whole stadium will be much louder and they can't have scored, so what must have happened? I thought maybe a player coming in for them. But when I walked out, I heard it was a goal for us, so a pleasant surprise. But now this game is out of the way, Arne, the burning question, do you anticipate there to be conversations between the higher-ups at both clubs about the future of Alexander Isak?
Read the full transcript
25:38I think the story should be about Hugo Iketike scoring another goal for us and it wouldn't be fair for me to talk about anything else. He's been three games with us now, scored three goals, impacted the games he played and as the other ones of my attackers and this is not the place to talk about anything else than that in my opinion. But I can understand you asking. Yeah, we will watch this space. Arne, well, it was a joy to watch. I know you didn't feel it was a flowing football contest, but it was certainly entertaining. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Entertaining, that's a better word than a joy to watch, in my opinion.
26:14Thank you, Arne, as ever. Well done. You're welcome. Where should we go? Should we go back to the start?
26:26All right, what do you make of... We'll tell you what, we're going to go to a break in a minute, but let's just sum up what we heard from Anaslott there. And it was interesting because the very first question was open-ended about the kind of game that he thought it was. His response straight away was on this wasn't football. Well, this is why I said what I said, because we played sometimes in games like that. And the Premier League sometimes will give you games like that. But what I like about what he said, and Jemmy was mentioning it at the end, and we were talking about it so many times, they were not patient enough on the ball.
27:00every time they put the ball down and they tried to make three to four passes to go on the right and on the left, they did open up Newcastle. But they didn't do it very often. I don't know why. Obviously, the crowd, they got bullied at times. They were over them. But, you know, I think they got away with one tonight, Liverpool. But look, that's how it is. It reminds me of, you know, the other day when Arsenal won at Man United. People were talking more about Man United than Arsenal. Same thing tonight, but they managed to find a way to win it. Through strength, like he said?
27:33David Jones:I'm not sure. I mean, you mentioned the duels in the first half. I thought Liverpool lost a lot of duels in the first half. And in some ways, people always say the best way to win is win a last-minute winner. Of course, everybody knows that. But in some ways, the way Liverpool won is almost the worst way to win, taking away the last-minute goal. But in terms of, like, you've been dominating, you've got 10 men, you're hanging on at the end, but they found a way to win. So I said Eddie Howe and Newcastle will be so disappointed tonight. But in the morning, they look at each other and think, we were outstanding.
27:59David Jones:I think it will almost be the opposite for Liverpool. They were absolutely ecstatic in that dressing room. When the coaches and the players get back to the training ground, the axe set in the next couple of days, we were like, we need to sort ourselves out. I think he was talking about Van Dijk. Oh, Van Dijk was outstanding. At the very end, if you compare Van Dijk and Konate in terms of clearing the ball and the impact that he had on going... That's like comparing me and you. No, but I think Van Dijk was immense tonight once again.
28:31Hello, I'm Juliet Perrington. And I'm Joe Tomlin. And we're the hosts of the one-on-one podcast from Sky Sports. Each episode, one of us will sit down for a chat with one of football's biggest names.
28:42David Jones:These players themselves are now more focused on numbers and things than when you were a player. Yeah, the only number I cared about was the mark I got on the paper. Yeah, exactly. In one-on-one, we'll take you beyond the pitch to meet the player or manager behind the headlines. I bet the former Man United player WhatsApp group is insane. It is good. It's good. Who's admin? I think it might be real, you know. He loves it. And we're here every week on your podcast platform of choice, so you can watch us across Sky Sports as well, on Sky Sports News, on the web, on the app, and also across our social platforms.
29:19How good was Oasis? Ah, really good. We have been the best band in the last 50 years, a rock band in the last 50 years.

30:16Hold it!
30:26David Jones:Oh my God! Oh my God! Wow! You lucky, lucky Redmen! Oh my God! Football! What a game! So Bosnye let it go. Oh my God, what is going on? Is this one of the greatest games in Premier League history? Am I going too big there? Well, I'm not sure about that, but it's certainly one of the games of this season so far. Football, it's what it does to you. You did say it got pretty lively in here. Thierry and I enjoyed watching that from afar. Let's take you all the way back to the first goal. And for context as well, this came against a run of play. Newcastle were right on top in that first half. Newcastle were outstanding.
31:11David Jones:Virgil van Dijk said in his interview he knew what was coming, but they didn't handle it at all, Liverpool. And they were very fortunate not to be 1-0 down at this stage. And then, listen, how often have we seen this in the Premier League era? A team under pressure. The team don't score. they don't capitalise and then they find themselves 1-0 down something the manager mentioned before the game in his interview with us about sometimes Newcastle going into that deep block maybe not getting out to people who take shots on the edge of the box so Ryan Grabenbert who listen I think Soliemus certainly last weekend comes into the team and does something that we don't normally know just takes it away from Nick Pope doesn't it gives him zero chance and really this happens right on the cusp of the end of the first half.
31:59And we're going to have to be honest, at that moment, Gordon was the best player on the field by a distance. Did it feel like at that point that this was the end of the game for Newcastle United? Goal down and a man down. What I thought, and Jamie thought also, is like, we had a good game. Now it's going to be maybe a team going low, defending, that's going to kill maybe the intensity of the game. But obviously we all know that that didn't happen. But it's very difficult to say that that's not a red. It is a red.
32:29David Jones:There's not too much to be negative about Newcastle tonight. That's what all the lads will be looking at. Anthony, as Thierry said, he was outstanding. And normally when you see someone sprint like that, I was asking the lads to take the video back. Has something happened a minute before? Has he had a bad foul and he didn't get one? Might they reflect they were just a bit too revved up? Listen, that was always going to be a problem. A lot of the times when Liverpool go to Everton, that normally happens. We'd go into derby games thinking, these are going to get a man set up, keep your heads. And that was definitely a feeling from all of us here today, right?
32:59David Jones:Throughout today, Newcastle have got to be careful. We're getting a red card. I thought it'd be one of the midfield three, not one of the front three. Just as the players emerged the second half, I was asking you, Thierry, is there a way back here for Newcastle United? And it certainly felt like 20 seconds into the second half. You're probably right, because I was like, there's no way they can come back into it and stuff. And I was like, Sub-Slaug are going to go in midfield, they're going to control the midfield. and then you know maybe a longer can do something on the counter and then this happens you know Galpo goes inside shoots ricochet now he gives the ball on the platter for for a critique but make no mistake the way he did finish that is outstanding looks like the goal scorer Thierry to go yeah it is look at Rennes it was outstanding I mentioned it already when he went to Paris Saint-Germain may be, not maybe, you know, when you have to play in front of Neymar, Messi and Mbappe, you're obviously going to be on the bench, unfortunately for him.
33:55But that's a hell of a finish. And that's three games, three goals.
33:58David Jones:I mean, you know him better than us, Thierry, but two out of his three goals now, certainly the one in the Community Shield and that one, the finish is outstanding. But they're like passes. It's not like he's just hit the ball. It's like he's picked that spot out. He did the same in the Community Shield. I mean, is this a feature of his game? Is this what we've got to get used to watching him? Yes, and also what I like about it is, you know, sometimes when there was a ricochet just before you shoot, or you know the one also he scored at Anfield, where he kept his composure. Although there was luck in the build-up, he kept his composure, aim, and I finished.
34:30This is how he does finish, and hopefully for you he can do more than that. The first Liverpool player to score in his first three competitive matches, Community Shield, first two Premier League games since Daniel Surridge. Oh, since, okay. our friend Daniel right the comeback then the unexpected comeback where did it come from
34:50David Jones:long throw and listen long throws have been a feature of this Premier League season the first two weekends everybody has I don't think there's a team who have not taken a long throw of yet but I mean I must say when we're talking about new players coming in we're talking about Ekotika the start he's made Kierkegaard has made a really poor start to his Liverpool career he found it really difficult in the first game against Bournemouth a little bit nervous he was up against Alanga today not easy but this this is not enough you've just got to go and head the ball. And he's almost just trying to stop the play.
35:18David Jones:I mean, that is really, really poor. He's not the biggest, but you've got to jump. You've got to challenge in that situation. Of course, from Guimara, you mentioned Guimara. How impressed you were with him in the game? His desire, the connection that he has with the crowd, the way he brings his team forward, he brings his team back into the game. And you said that Kerkers is not big. Guimara is not big. Try and head that away. I'm trying to look to defend him. Does he just get trapped under the ball a little bit? Yeah, but as soon as you go into this type of situation, trying to grab the shirt of the player or keeping away, the desire of Grimarese was always going to win that and that's a great finish at the end of the day.
35:56But Blackjack, go for it. Put your body in.
35:58David Jones:He's not even looking at the ball. He's just getting his head down. And he's actually useful in the air, Bruno. That's three of his last six goals have come with his head. But listen, Newcastle deserve to get themselves, not leveled, but... This really put the energy back in the stadium. You can see it there. You felt it even watching on here in the studio. It just felt the game was suddenly alive again. And I think even you were saying, Jamie, at that point, it might just take a set piece, a long throw, a goal kick or something that Newcastle could grab. I said before about, in some ways, that was one of the worst ways to win Liverpool's performance was so poor.
36:36David Jones:11 v 11, it was poor. Arnie Stott talked about the duels in the game. They lost a lot of duels at one stage. Remember Anthony Gordon winning a header against Canate in the first half? And you're thinking, that can't happen. Liverpool's front four really found it tough up against that back four. People coming behind them and being strong and aggressive. But the biggest problem I felt with Liverpool tonight, when they had the extra man, they were almost just keeping the ball like there was a minute to go and going back to the goalkeeper. You have to go for the next goal. Because I kept saying to you, all it needs is a long throw or a set piece.
37:09David Jones:And that's exactly what happened. Liverpool were so poor On the ball Really really poor But listen Credit to Newcastle And exactly what They deserve But this is the point We're going to look at here Now on the free kick What Thierry mentioned To the Liverpool manager Arna Slott About the line Because I've noticed this Last week In the Bournemouth game That Liverpool are going deeper On free kicks Whether that's a new tactic With you know Virgil van Dijk's decided The coaching staff have decided But What was really interesting Was on this one They went really high Now listening to the manager He mentioned because of the position of where the free kick was.
37:44David Jones:I didn't know if it was something to do with the fact that Newcastle were a man down or something. And Van Dijk thought, no, we can actually go higher. No, that's something that you go with what you're saying. There's something that I just noticed now. Sorry, Thierry, but just look at Thierry Van Dijk. Because we've showed other clips. He's actually telling the line to go back on certain clips. So just keep an eye on Van Dijk. People are wanting to actually go deeper. I think the line should be deeper. And he's saying, no, stay. you see Kierke's behind the ball there but on other clips that we had he was doing the opposite Can I go back?
38:16Yeah If you go back to now So we mentioned that they went low on everything before Deep, yeah Sorry, deep Have a look now him looking at the bench Van Dijk Yes Now play it He's like, what? Like, he has a little He's looking at the bench He did look at the bench before he's going low and then they did say and then and then he goes like whoa in conjunction with the bench yeah but just for me please where would you then based on the first half what we've seen through the game where would you have expected that line to be not so much on the first after
38:54David Jones:there's a different it's where you think the line's right i actually i'm actually watching liverpool now and for the majority free kicks i think they're too deep i i think the right line is probably around about there. And you go high a lot of the time to give space maybe for your goalkeeper. Yeah? Now what was happening when teams were going high was the fella on the ball was looking at the space he could put it into. Now it almost looks like Liverpool have gone a very Italian way. If you still watch games in Italy and in Serie A, teams on wide free kicks are almost in the box. So Liverpool now are going right into the box on the wide free kicks.
39:32David Jones:We've maybe got a couple of clips, but that's probably the line where I would be. As soon as we looked at it, we both felt, oh, that's high. And I think if you're Newcastle, you're thinking, oh, we put that over the top and we let them run onto it. But listen, we're going to get to the free kick now. But there's a, I mean, there's people for Liverpool who've made a really poor start to the season. Mo Salah's one of them, even though he scored a goal and got an assist. Kanata is another one. He has been all over the place. Now you want your centre-back to go and win that header. He's going backwards, but he still should deal with that.
40:00David Jones:he's up against Dan Byrne and then Gravenberge goes on the run but it felt like it was coming it did you can't deny that Newcastle deserved it you just said it Jamie he's up against Dan Byrne 6-7 I want my centre back to go and win that he was all over the place last week he's more interested in grabbing his arm he was really poor in the first half as well he was he's not at the races at all and I absolutely shudder to think where Liverpool would be without Virgil van Dijk has been absolutely outstanding. Can he finish from Basula as well, Thierry? Second Premier League goal? The ball, yeah. He has to do way better, Connate here.
40:38But you can see here, Becker doesn't get... Usually in this type of situation, he wins this battle. But, you know, it's one of those where you just put your leg and hope for the best, and that's exactly what happened. But to go back to your point, and Jamie said it, the line should be there. What was fun is the whole game, they didn't do it, and you could see that it was the bench. the bench that called Van Dijk to say we've got to go higher. You could see Kerkers was going back and it was kind of with an after. Just after. Look. Now he's telling them oh, there you go. Let's get back here. But it's almost...
41:13Yes. Like he took, now he took the decision.
41:17David Jones:But even, so that was Liverpool right throughout the game. That is too deep for me. So every free kick, I'm not saying they got everyone wrong. This is a decision from Van Dijk. You know, They conceded from the one that they were too high, in my opinion. And it's too deep. Why, Jamie? I mean, look how far away... Because this is the question that fans are always asking. They can never work out why these lines are drawn by the defender. No, but wherever you hold your line, you're always going to go further back because the ball's going to go over your head. So you're going to end up on the penalty spot.
41:42David Jones:So you're on the six-yard box with your goalkeeper coming. He's got no space to come. He could clash into one of your players. And if it drops down, it's just you're in the six-yard box. So that's the reason why going higher, to give the goalkeeper more space to come and get it. And if you lose a header higher, it's further away from your goal. My thing was, and again, I go back to it, why did you change it? No, I know, but I'm saying you did it the whole game, do it the whole game. Newcastle event with 10 men at that high line. They stayed high the whole game. They didn't change what they were about.
42:15That's why I wanted to ask the coach why he did it. I mean, they got punished for the only time they did it. So obviously it worked for us to talk about it. but that was the question which we thought it was a bit weird. Yeah, the most unlikely comeback that was from Newcastle United. It felt like where there was a will there was a way 2-2 surely it was all done. But no, as you've heard as we all know now Rio has written his name into the history books this evening with a moment that Liverpool fans will long, long remember and that young man will never forget.
42:47David Jones:No, listen there's probably only Liverpool supporters tonight and Sunderland supporters it was delighted that that young man has probably got that goal they wouldn't want Newcastle to get their result but I think a lot of the neutral fans would have in some ways been disappointed because Newcastle deserved a lot more but what a moment, you think about Premier League moments you know special moments that happened we highlighted Michael Owen I think scoring a hat check at maybe 17-18 before that game and you think of the career he goes on to have and what he goes on to do and I always think young players who go on to have great careers you can always pinpoint a moment or something special very early on.
43:26David Jones:And you look at those names there. Wayne Rooney. What am I asking? A day younger against Arsenal. Yeah, I remember. Thank you. Yeah. No, but you know what it is, and you said it well. When that ball arrived, I think if you're watching the game and you love football and you love great stories, everyone was with him when he did hit that ball. Everyone wanted the ball to go in the back of the net because the story is too beautiful. You wanted to... No, you wanted... No, seriously. No, come on. You've got to be above anything. As a 16-year-old kid that can make his team win, you've got to be above all the hate and everything.
44:01That was beautiful. Fairytale moment to finish. An incredible game. What has Eddie Howe made of all this tonight? We are going to find out before we leave you in just a couple of minutes' time.

44:58Well, it's been a remarkable night. And in truth, Newcastle will reflect it might not have gone much worse than it has because in the end, they suffered a last-second defeat. They were down to 10. Gordon is banned. Joe Linton, Tonali, well, we're not sure about their fitness moving forward. Let's get some answers, if we can, from Eddie Howe with Juliet Farrington. Eddie, how are you feeling? There were so many stories in that game of football. Yes, a bruising game for us. I think so many different emotions because really proud of the performance, really pleased with how we played, great energy, great intensity, really pleased with the following of the game plan and then adapting because we go to 10 men and for me we're the better team in the second half as well as the first.
45:45So to come away with nothing and injuries and suspensions and concussions, it's a pretty bad day. Where are we with all the injuries then that you've picked up tonight? Yeah, Sandro doesn't look good. He was in quite a bit of pain. I don't know the full extent of him or Jolinson's injury, but they both look threatening for us in the sense that they could be out for a while. And then, of course, Ant's going to be suspended, which is a big blow for us. Just reflecting on that, I thought there was no intent. People say it looks bad. I've not seen it again. I've seen a really quick image of it. I thought he was trying to pull out of the tackle in the end.
46:20You seemed to lose your cool a little bit. You talked about emotion before the game and not letting that override your performance, but you did seem to lose a little bit of cool heads once Liverpool went ahead. I think it was a game where both teams were on the edge. Liverpool the same as us. There were a few contentious moments for the referee. It probably wasn't an easy game to manage from his perspective, but I don't know, I don't think so. And Thane's challenge, of course, is a red card and that doesn't look good in that respect but as I said, I don't think there was any intent from him. It's a solution you need to try and find now what with his suspension, you've got your concussion as well involved as well, you've got the two injuries as well.
47:05Well, you need to find a solution rather quickly now. It's not about one individual anymore, is it, that so many of us have been talking about? No, it's not. We need to find solutions to make the team perform but I think the team is performing and creating chances and I couldn't be more pleased with the performance. But obviously, as I said right at the start, it's a difficult game to digest because, well, the opening two games is difficult to digest because we've played really well in both. We've ended up with one point. So, of course, you're looking at points and the ability to win games, it's not quite been there, but the general feel is we're a really strong team.
47:41But you have shown that ability that you can win games, as you say though, but you haven't got the points to show for it. I think historically we've always done that, so we're going to have to do it again. We're going to have to find a new way at the moment without Alex. And it's great to see Will Asula step up and score his goal today. That's a great moment for him. We desperately wanted it to be meaningful in terms of getting points, but it wasn't to be. On Alex, there were reports this evening suggesting that the club have actually met with him. I don't know if you were aware about that because your focus was well and truly on the game tonight.
48:14Can there be a peaceful solution to this situation? Yeah, I wasn't aware of that. So obviously talks have been going on since Alex decided to not go on tour with us. And I've concentrated on coaching the team, so I've got no update for you. But as we referred to earlier, you picked up these injuries tonight. You've got the suspensions as well. This transfer window, this week that you have left, do you expect it to be a busy one for the team, not the individual? We hope that we can bring players into the football club. We've been trying all through the window, especially in the forward positions.
48:50So we'll continue right to the end. Eddie, thank you. Thank you. But of course, there's going to be a sharp focus on that Isak situation now, particularly with what's happened tonight. The ban for Gordon injuries to two key players in midfield share potentially as well. If you're in Eddie Howe's situation right now, Thierry, What are you saying to those people above you about Alexander Isak? I think it's been saying to them since the beginning that he has to stay. We all know that. But sometimes when you are the club and you're a manager, it's out of your hands what's happening when it's in the end of what's happening above.
49:29But, you know, the solution might be him staying. I said before, and I will say it again, it looked like the best thing for everybody was for him to leave. I said, maybe if he apologised and come back, maybe he can stay. But because of the situation of what happened tonight with all the injuries, even more so now, you know, you have him, make him stay. Do you sense there might be a strengthening of Newcastle's resolve? Jamie, we saw the powers at B. Pitchside at full time, consoling Eddie Howe.
49:59David Jones:I think there will be a feeling amongst the supporters that Liverpool have just done us in the last minute, they're not getting our man. That type of feeling. I think Anthony Gordon now being out for three games probably doesn't help the situation in terms of maybe Liverpool getting their hands on them. But I think it all comes down to if Newcastle could get two forwards in this week. They put a bid in for Larson you mentioned before the game. So they're obviously looking to bring those players in. I think if they bring two forwards in, I think they do sell them to Liverpool and get the money.
50:26David Jones:Because what they've got up there and since Eddie Howe coming is something pretty special in terms of that connection between the pitch and the crowd. It goes back to sort of Keegan days And Keegan's teams didn't win a trophy This team have won a trophy You see that fight in the second half They can't have someone between now And maybe the next transfer window Diminish that And if he's not willing to sort of give it everything And he's saying he's injured when he's fully fit And he's not training right There's a cloud over your club And Eddie Howell, they get asked about that Press conference after press conference I actually think it's in the best interest of Newcastle To sell it to Liverpool And that's not me as a Liverpool fan because I'm not 100 % with these transfers.
51:05David Jones:I've said that before. I'm thinking from a Newcastle point of view, my experience in those situations, get your two strikers in and get as much money as you can and keep creating that sort of atmosphere and intensity that they've got right now. So do you think what happened tonight, because you lost Gordon, because, you know, the injuries, and do you think that doesn't change a tiny bit? Maybe a little bit, the Gordon situation, but I know the fans emotionally... But those emotions could be in the boardroom as well, Jamie. For sure. Yeah, listen, they might be, but I'm thinking from Eddie Howe's point of view, everybody gets emotional, and I totally understand that.
51:38David Jones:Liverpool's an emotional football club. That's why the passion for the game is so strong in both cities. But Eddie Howe's the one who's going to have to be going in those press conferences twice a week, getting asked about Alexander Isak all the time, and what's a player who's probably not involved in his team. Maybe in a week's time when the transfer window is shut and Alexander Isak is still at St James' Park. It might be because of the meeting that happened this afternoon, we don't know. So maybe they got in front of him and convinced him they would offer him a new contract. Maybe that's been presented to him already.
52:08Maybe there is talk of release clauses within that.
52:11David Jones:Tia, you said earlier on, and we've had this at Liverpool, by the way, with Luis Suarez. I think almost apologising and coming back into the fold. You said he could apologise and be taken back. But do you sometimes think when a player's gone that far the other way against his teammates and his club for making promises they haven't kept, Do you think a player, when he's gone that far, will apologise and say, I was in the wrong? Look, I do believe you. We've been in dressing rooms. I will accept it. I made mistakes in my life. If someone is honest enough and can do it and say, look, I wanted to leave, it didn't happen, but I will be fully committed to the cause, I'm sorry, then let's...
52:52David Jones:No, I'm not talking about his teammates accepting him. I think teammates will accept him. I'm talking about himself. Do you think the fact how far he's gone against his own club, do you think he'd be big enough to say, I got this totally wrong and I'm out of order? Look, I've seen it before. I've seen guys that really wanted to stay and went, look, I'm going to stay. And then they couldn't go over it because they didn't really accept the decision that they've taken. They were sorry, but they didn't accept it, if you know what I mean. But if you go back to, I've seen players that missed a transfer window.
53:21I remember Suarez, Luis Suarez was supposed to go to Arsenal. He didn't make it that way. He stayed and he had a great season. So I do believe that at one point he needs to have an honest discussion with himself. And you know, sometimes agent gets involved and I don't know what gets involved. Your family gets involved. At one point you need to sit in a room and have an honest discussion with yourself. What do I want? But ultimately, Thierry, a lot went against Newcastle tonight in the sense that they were without Isaac. They lose Anthony Gordon by a red card. They are 2-0 down. They've had injuries to play as well.
53:54Yet they found their way back into this football match. Is that what they should take away from tonight's experience? That spirit? Yes, of course. But the coach said it. Like, it's very difficult to take this one. What you want is the points. You want the points. And yes, after that, you're like, if you lose, you can lose like that. But ultimately, what you want is points. And I've seen that before. I've seen that crowd being able and that team being able to turn around a game. I remember Arsenal being 4-0 up there and the game finished 4-4 in 20 minutes or whatever it was. So I've seen that before.
54:30But the situation of having the Isak situation, losing that game, didn't start well against Villa, although they played really well. But you played two games really well, but you have nothing to show at the end. And you have injuries at the end. Sorry, Jim.
54:45David Jones:The manager is more important than Isak. what they've got and the job that manager's done at that football club, he is a special, special manager. I'm not just talking about for Newcastle, I'm talking about managers in the Premier League. The job he's done there from where they were to where they are now, I'm not saying they're going to lose the manager, but if you're talking about players or manager going, he's much more important than Isaac. Look, if he stays, if Isaac stays, we all know that he's going to have to get the heart of the Newcastle fans back. Some of them, I'm sure, like okay we understand maybe not a lot in all fairness but it is doable I've seen I've seen that before and at the end of the day you don't want to play like that not on the field not being well but at one point you have to be honest with yourself and stop listening to what's happening around you.
55:31I wish I had a crystal ball see how all panned out over the next seven days it's going to be absorbing not just the story at Newcastle United I think there is still plenty of Premier clubs that feel there is a lot to do in and out. Next weekend Newcastle United back in action now they head to Ellen Road, Leeds with a winning start at home against Everton, 5-0 defeat as well at Arsenal remember that's next Saturday at 5. Super Sunday, they'll be getting used to this by now, two games kicking off at two, Manchester City head to Brighton who are looking for their first victory and Nottingham Forest take on West Ham United side looking for their first points.
56:09And how about that at four o 'clock? Liverpool and Arsenal. I'm afraid, Thierry, we went out of time to talk about Arsenal. We promised it to Arsenal fans. We'll have to make it up to them next time. I just wanted them to watch the show. And also next Sunday night, 6.45, thoughts turn to Aston Villa Crystal Palace. a live match next Sunday evening. What a lot of football and there is more to come because we've got 19 live games for you tomorrow night from the Carabao Cup. Headlining is Leeds United as they go to troubled Sheffield Wednesday.
