In short

Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Anthony Alanga and Johan Visser scoring; the episode analyzes Newcastle’s fast, direct attacking plan and Tottenham’s defensive issues, especially early and on set pieces.

Guest backgrounds

Jamie Redknapp and Ryan (match analyst/pundit) discuss tactics and player performances. Patrick Davison interviews Newcastle manager Matthias Jaesler and players Anthony Alanga and Johan Visser.

Key claims

Jaesler’s match plan worked immediately (including a move tried 40 seconds in that nearly scored). Newcastle’s pace and “playing in behind” repeatedly exposed Tottenham’s man-for-man defending. Tottenham’s captain/center-back leadership (Micky van de Ven) is criticized for poor positioning on the first goal, and Spurs struggle with second-ball responsibility on set pieces. Nico Gonzalez’s delivery is highlighted as a major impact signing.

Notable examples

Alanga’s pace run behind Andy Robertson and his finish; Visser’s “player reborn” form and second-half goal via improvisation; Newcastle’s early 30–40 second attack; Tottenham’s two Premier League defeats with no goals scored.

0:06This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Thanks for joining us. Saturday Night Football came from North London this week as Spurs played Newcastle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This is how we saw things at full time.

0:30A first Premier League win for Matthias Gaislers, Newcastle United, and an impressive start by the new manager, who's got his first three games unbeaten. Last weekend it was Ilanga and Willock that earned him a point against Liverpool. This weekend it is Ilanga and Wisser who have done the business for Newcastle. There's been a bit of a bad tempered finish because for Spurs this is another poor result that extends their bad record here at home which they failed to make their fortress last season and they've started off on the wrong foot here as well. two matches in which they've been beaten two matches in which they've failed to score in the Premier League and Newcastle rammed home their advantage with those goals from Ilanga and Wisser with a brilliant bit of improvisation in the second half an impressive start by Newcastle, Jamie Yeah, absolutely fantastic as I said, decimated in the summer real negative feeling about the place but winning football matches makes you feel completely different and those supporters cannot believe what they've seen in the last couple of games and we've lost stars players they always remember for a long time considering what they did in terms of winning that trophy but maybe there's some new stars emerging at the club so Spurs in it for the long haul and have to pick themselves up but all the smiles are on Newcastle faces Tottenham nil Newcastle two what a result for Spurs for Newcastle I should say what a second-half performance from them spearheaded by that pace and directness from Anthony Alanga and Spurs just couldn't handle that attacking threat Newcastle so impressive Spurs worrying two games in two defeats none scored five conceded but for Newcastle that is a dream away day Jamie yeah absolutely fantastic today I think the way they set up for minute one that guy there was a constant threat they kept playing the ball in behind him the manager deserves a lot of credit for that because he obviously had a game plan and they exploited Tottenham's weaknesses down that side and with Alanga and Dedic they were absolutely brilliant and I'm so pleased for Visser and I'm so pleased for players that have had a really tough time like Alanga because last year it must be so difficult for me I've probably thought many times have I made the right move here but today these are the days that makes you think yeah it was worth it you play for a huge football club like Newcastle even though they've lost players this club will always survive you know and I think today was one of those days where they look back and go what a moment for all of us because there's been a lot of pressure surrounding that club they're all dancing they're all dancing oh and I wonder Ryan what Eddie Howe must be thinking watching this with two of the players that we were told he pushed the boat out to bring to St.

3:25James's Park last season and just didn't perform for him as soon as he leaves now he's starting to see it yeah they obviously had some injuries last season that probably affected that but I think it just goes to show the type of manager Eddie Alhiz that has left that club in a good place. There's some good characters in that changing room and it looks like they've made some good sign-ins. The manager's getting more out of other players as well so positive start for them. I thought they deserved the win today. Their third away win of 2026. All three have been in London and two have come at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

3:58Another big step back Jamie for Spurs today? Yeah, but I said it last week and I said the same thing again. This is going to take time. There's a lot of new players all coming in and the manager's got a jigsaw puzzle and he's got to figure out how do I fit these players in? What's going to be the best system? What's my best free in midfield? Have I got the right wide men? Who's going to be my number 10? So there are going to be a few teaming problems. I will also say that I look at the senior players there and I think Mickey van der Ben as an example, leading. I don't think he did enough in that respect today.

4:31I think certainly in the goals. So even some of the players that have been a long while there, they can do better. That's not good enough today, even though they can give that excuse. But from Newcastle's point of view, fantastic. It certainly was. And another key player for Matthias Jaiste today was Johan Visser, who looks like a player reborn, doesn't he? Here he is right now with Patrick Davison. Johan, I don't know if people at home saw it, but you've just been in the Newcastle fans. Who have you been to see? Yeah, I've been to see my family, my wife and my son. because they travel all the way from Newcastle to be here.

5:01So, yeah, I'm very happy. You know, I'm part of the team, part of the club, and I want my family also to enjoy. Just looking at that away end, it's a special club when it has momentum. Of course. You know, I know these fans, they are so lovely. They love their club, they love their player, and what they want is just us to give them what we have in the body. So we try. It's been difficult today, but they never stopped singing, shouting. So yeah, today's for them. So you know there was negativity around pre-season. You lost the manager, you lost a lot of top, top players. Why has the season started so well?

5:41The team first. For the team because, you know, of course we lost so many players, but I think the club worked well and it's good because this is challenging. So we need players to step up. You know what I mean? So like me, for instance, I didn't play. You really are stepping up. Yeah, you know what I mean? Like I didn't play last year and so now I have the chance to play. So I just need to enjoy every single moment. And there's so many players, you know, new players. Even Amar today has been unbelievable. You know what I mean? So, yeah, even Anthony now. So, yeah, so many players have to step up and I think we enjoy to be challenging.

6:20And with the fans behind us, no one can step up. So why has the start of this season been so different for you personally? Injury is part of it, but confidence as well? How tough did last season get at its lowest moment? First, because I'm not injured. That's the first thing. And secondly, because I feel confident now. I trust myself, I trust the manager, I trust the club, I trust the player around. Even when I didn't play last year, I had so many training with them. so I know all of them, you know, we've been training a lot, a lot. So now I know, they know, actually they know me, you know, and they know my movement and for sure for myself, yeah, I need to enjoy it because last year it's been tough, but I enjoy every single moment now, but it's just the beginning.

7:04And I'm not saying Eddie Howe wasn't, but are we seeing a real top, top manager at work here in the TLCIs? So we looked at the, not your goal, but the first goal. You tried it about 40 seconds into the game as a team and then eventually it got you your first goal. That looked like something you'd worked on again and again on the training pitch? Yeah, for sure, for sure. As you said, Ediha have done a top job at the club. We need to respect that. So now the new manager came with the new identity. And yes, that's something we've been working, but it's everything we've been working because today we scored that one, set pieces, okay?

7:35So yeah, everything, every part of the game, we are really precise. And of course, he's a really dynamic manager, so we need to give everything. But yes, I think it's the best signing of the Newcastle match so far. Well done. Thank you very much. What a great win. What a big smile. And I'm sure that Newcastle fans will be sharing that tonight because he is a player reborn. Anthony Alanga is as well. And Newcastle United have come flying out the traps with a very encouraging performance against Liverpool. Couldn't quite hang on for the victory, but they have their first win of the season at Spurs tonight.

8:31Big stories elsewhere today. Hull City's incredible start continues. Two wins on the bounce for them. The first promoted team to do it since Huddersfield nine years ago. He was the match winner, came off the bench with the only goal of the game. Disappointment for Frank Lampard and a late equaliser for David Moyes' Everton side. After Alex Scott had put Bournemouth in front, Marco Rosa hoping for his first win, but James Tarkovsky had other ideas, equalising in the 91st minute. Liverpool held earlier today 2-2 by Nottingham Forest. That was the other game that took place on Saturday. Last night we saw Manchester City make it two wins out of two.

9:13Palace two defeats out of two. And as you can see, there is a lot more to come still on this Premier League weekend. And you can watch it with us as well. But scan that QR code right now and you'll see all the goals so far on the Premier League app.

10:09Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. It's time to get more analysis of today's match and head back to the studio. What a great evening this has been for Newcastle United tonight. A reminder of the opposition of one of those players that they've lost this summer. But they have a manager who seems has hit the ground running in Matthias Jaesler, not just in terms of his Newcastle career, but his Premier League career as well. And he is bringing the best out of these players. And great to see Johan Visser's reaction at the end there. It's all smiles for these Newcastle players right now.

10:43Did we get though, Jamie, a glimpse 30 seconds into this game with their new signing, Nico Gonzalez, who, you know, I told us before the game we've brought in to bring quality to this team. What they're going to be about moving forward. Yeah, absolutely. I think if we can see the goal here, this is their, if we just stop it there a sec, this is an indication of how brave they were going to be. You can see the top line there of just players going forward 30 seconds into the game. This is your right back, Derek. This is Anthony Alanga. Now, one thing I will say about Nico Gonzalez is playing for Manchester City, I didn't know.

11:16I mean, I always thought, yeah, nice player, technical, could break the play up, put nice five-yard passes. I didn't really know he had this in his locker. But today, he actually proved he has. You know, the manager is already telling you there. There's your pass. There's your pass. Can you deliver it? Because not many can these days. I think of how many players can actually ping a ball and give this delivery into here. Anyway, sorry, just let it roll on now. You can see that Dedic makes a good run. Now, Antti Ananga has run Anthony Robertson into a bad position he doesn't want to get into. Now, you can see Ananga, very unlucky.

11:47All of a sudden, that goes in. It's 1-0. Andy Robertson has got nose right there. He's got a problem. And you can see there's been other examples as well of it. You know, with Tenali, he doesn't really want to run in these areas. It's a great pass, great pick out. And there is an energy and a desire about this Newcastle side for a minute one. And as a Tottenham Hotspur player, you're straight away thinking, we've got it on here today. We're meant to be the home team. We're meant to be attacking like this, get the crowd going. But that set the standard, didn't it, very early into the game, Ryan?

12:15It did from Newcastle. And I mean, we said at halftime, they probably didn't play that ball enough or look to go forward quick enough with the front line that they had in the first half. For anyone who wasn't watching at halftime, Ryan, just show us what you identified that was a problem for Spurs. I think it's more the principles and the idea of how the manager wanted to go about the game. so if if we stop it here so we said it's it's man for man so Tonali has followed Elanga, Miki van der Ven's gone into the striker Wieser which is fine I think if you're aggressive with it and you go on a backwards pass you go you'd be aggressive you try and get the crowd up be on the front foot as we play it through I think this is where the problem was for me in this it's it's a bit too passive for my liking so stop it there so Miki van der Ven's here if you're going to go and be aggressive you've got to go so marmouche go robertson go go and be aggressive and end the end the attack there is that what we would see from a brighton team under the zerbi i think yeah maybe maybe it's releasing the fear um because you've got to be brave to do this you've got to be brave you've got to be aggressive these ben the distance for me is just far too big far too big and as the play goes on the center back so we play it through the centre-back's able to step inside which opens up this area of vulnerability so as a midfielder Tonali doesn't want to be there so like I say if you're going to go man for man fine that's what you're doing that's your idea your game plan go and be aggressive in that moment if he comes inside you foul him you take your medicine you get back in the shape and you set up again because that position there for Tonali as a midfielder it's not a natural one is it Jamie it's not something No work.

13:54Because if Malik Chow, as you say, plays that ball, you can see he's saying to him, play it into the space. You can see the manager, he wants that ball played into the space. It's a mismatch. From a physicality point of view, if you think of Miki van der Ven there, that's a good race. It's a good race. It's perfect. But as a midfielder, having to track that from a top-line player where you're constantly having to look over your shoulder, it's very difficult to manage. Let's roll it on again, because you see the manager's frustration as well, and it doesn't quite come up. And do you think he would have been saying at halftime, Ryan, let's try this again.

14:26Let's try and keep this working. Well, they had success from it early on in the game. So they was on the front foot. They had a chance for Malanga. They had a couple of set plays where their frontline players were running forward. And they played a few forward passes. They had some opportunities. But as the half went on, they stopped it. Whereas in the second half, they come out. One of the first things they did, they played a Langer in and almost got a penalty. And it was dangerous for Tottenham. And let's see the goal as well. because, again, I mean, we almost take it for granted because of the quality that comes from Nico Gonzalez here.

14:55Again, I think if you're talking about going, just stop it there, Seth. If you're thinking about being aggressive on the front foot, I think he's got to get closer, Fernandes. He's got to stop that. He's already had a warning sign earlier on that he's got that pass in the bag. There's your right back. There's obviously Antti and Lange. Willock's one of the highest midfield players. And I think that there's obviously Micky van der Ven. You've got Parvi Barnes here and Visser. So they are doing the same that they did in the first half. but I feel that from Tottenham's point of view, they don't really ever get sorted.

15:24This time, Tonali doesn't really get with him. And I think that's something that they had a problem with all game, Ryan. Yeah, look, I think from Newcastle's point of view, it's a magnificent goal. Yeah. I've obviously worked on it. I think the run, to be aggressive with the header, the time and the swivel from a langer, it's top draw. But from Tottenham's point of view, I hate it. I've got to be honest, I hate it. Normally in this situation, it's fine. You're in a 4-4-2. Normally the priority is to protect inside. to stay as compact as possible and protect inside. It's not a normal situation for me to have a man-for-man reference in this moment of the game.

15:59When you're being passive, to ask Tonali to have, this is his reference, like I say, a player that's behind him. Normally, if you think of man-for-man teams that are really aggressive, it's on a backwards pass and they go, they have a reference that they can see. They go, they're aggressive, and they're on the front foot. For the midfielder to do that, it's it's nearly impossible for him to manage if mickey van der ven doesn't slide and it goes back to principles normally you'll see this ball happen a lot a lot in the premier league in the championship league one the jewel goes up the the instinct or what you're taught as a defender ball goes over your head you run back you run back you slide you go and you protect your mate but we didn't see that and i think that comes down to the principles and the idea of how they were trying to defend.

16:46Mickey's focus was on him. And heck, focus on him. Tonali's responsibility is a langar. And in that moment, there's only one winner to get that. And how good is that finish as well, Ryan? I think it's top draw. Honestly, this finish is top draw. It's with his weaker foot, his run up pace. I think they'll probably underestimate the quality of the touch to slow down and set himself. And yeah, like I say, the finish, the move, the timing of everything, it's excellent from the passers point. And that run again, we could just see him there. Obviously, they've got that space and they've got that 2v1.

17:18Andy Robertson knows he's got a problem. He's been pointing at Tenale. He wants his captain to do more. But as that ball goes, and you can see your right back is on the mark because he knows he's got that delivery. If he can't play that 50-yard pass, he doesn't even bother running. So as he hits it, you can see then that he comes alive. Alanga knows he's on to that second ball. He's going to win that race. Gets a good first touch. Now, can you stop yourself? Can you calm yourself down? because last year... And that was, I know you're going to say, that was a criticism. He couldn't slow down. No, but last year, he wouldn't have had the confidence and the belief.

17:50And Joanne Visser said it. And it feels to probably people at home listening and go, is it really that simple? Sometimes it is. It's confidence. It's a belief. He's got a manager that's putting his arm around his shoulder. He started another game. And that was an absolute wonderful, absolutely wonderful piece of play from him. And I love to see it because we're so quick to doubt players and to say, you know, I heard Newcastle fans last year, and I'm sure he did, going into games. And I thought, it's so hard for him because the crowd was second-guessing everything he did. He was probably second-guessing himself.

18:20But now, he looks like a real player. He looks like a real player. So does Johan Wisser, because Johan Wisser wasn't a bad player at Brentford. He just looked a bad player last year, for whatever reason. He started the season poorly. He was trying to force a move. He didn't have a pre-season. Went to a big club like Newcastle and couldn't handle any expectation. Now, he's had a full pre-season. and the manager's putting his arm around him. Oh, and he looks like a player. And this is how simple it is sometimes. You need a bit of time and you need to be calm and patient with players. But that was a brilliant team goal from Newcastle's point of view, exposing exactly what Ryan said, where a team were playing man for man, too aggressive, but not quite got it right yet because they're two weeks into the season.

18:56That will change. Did it look like that was a move and a series of moves that had been constructed on the training ground by Matthias Gaisler? I think so. I think so because it happened early and we probably didn't see or touch upon it, but as it goes on, the players sort of look at the manager as if to say, like, perfect. And Jamie referenced it early on when it happened 30, 35, 40 seconds into the game, the manager was there pointing. He was there and it can be a tactic. Sometimes you feel there's a mismatch on the pitch, whether that be from a direct ball, 1v1 situations. It's incredible play from the right back being aggressive and I can't speak highly enough of that finish.

19:36That is a top, top finish. And I think probably what we're seeing now with the right-back going up, it's bringing Alanga inside the pitch. When you're inside the pitch and you've got that pace, you're closer to goal. You're closer to the goal. And I think he's probably a player that doesn't need thinking time. And that's an instinctive finish. It's a great thing. You said you hated it from Tottenham's point of view. And I think we were both in agreement on this. If we could just see that one last angle there, please, Kelsey, on the first goal. because this, for me, is a problem. The captain, this is why I mentioned him and I referenced what he does.

20:12So, Miki van der Vem, you're the captain, you're the leader, and you can see everything. That's why you're a centre-back. I think his body shape, his body position is all wrong here. We could just let it run on just a little bit, please. As that ball gets into Nico, there's a couple of things, as I say. I think Fernandes says, look, what's he doing? Go close him. Put him under pressure. Get his head down. Now I look at Mickey van der Ven. He's walking. He's walking. Is he really in a position? He's crossing his feet over. I want to see him ready. Because now this is starting to evolve. Andy Robertson's got a problem.

20:45He's already pointed to him. Now, if I'm the centre-back, I'm thinking to myself, I can help my mate here because that ball's going to go over my head. If I shift over with my electric pace, because he's not even in the same line as his defence, he then can get that second ball. and save him, this man, who doesn't want to run back 50 yards to have that problem. So as we let it run again, just watch Mickey van der Ven. Look, he starts to jog. He's still a sprinting now. You sprint, Mickey, because if you sprint, you stop this. But he doesn't, and he keeps jogging now, and then he keeps jogging, and then he decides to think, oh, OK, I better go and press him now, and he's one yard away.

21:23If he'd have sprinted at the start, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind, and it's not about being... The manager can tell you instructions, give you instructions about going man for man, but there's sometimes in football you have to figure it out for yourself. You're the captain. He could have stopped that at source. That's really poor play from Mickey van der Ven. And he needs to lead with his team because he is the captain now. Second goal, set-piece. Now, Spurs did have a problem last season, perhaps the season before, in terms of their goalkeeper constantly being crowded at set-pieces. This is a different kind of play, but it felt easy from a Newcastle perspective.

21:56What did you spot here, Ryan? Obviously, they've just made subs, so responsibilities can get a bit lost. But Valtemar is a big boy. This is his first touch of the game, by the way, Valtemar. I think we spoke about it before the game, and I think the way Roberto wants his team to look is going to be a lot more technical. So then, if you stop it here, we can just stop it. Which is fine. We need more responsibility from Yamiki van der Veen, Jovan Hek, and Rodrigo Bentancourt is the other zonal player in this moment. So they're the three big headers. But do you think that's a personnel issue to start with?

22:30Is there anybody there that really wants to head the ball? I don't think so. I think it's just understanding your roles and responsibilities. Normally in those moments, your three big headers, you want them free. So if the ball comes in their zone, they go, they be aggressive, they head the ball. I think where the goals come from is Ben Sencour is in the back post zone. He's thinking, this is my zone, I'm going to go and head the ball. So he takes a couple of steps back and vacates his zone, but he doesn't affect the ball. doesn't affect the ball so when when the knockdown happens it goes right into his zone so I think they'll probably analyze that and listen everyone has different ideas of how they want it to look if we stop it there so Mickey van der Verne van Heck in their zones they couldn't affect the ball they slide they stay compact in their zones here I think Rodrigo Bentancourt the second he realizes and can judge the flight of the ball I'm not affecting this I need to stay here because then my responsibility changes.

23:22I'm not a header of the ball. I'm someone that needs to defend the zone and to protect inside the goal. It's really poor from Spurs' point of view, quite easy from Newcastle's point of view, but again, great bit of play. Lovely improvisation for the finish as well. The finish is unbelievable. It's really instinctive, really good. So right, here's a question for you as a coach and as a manager. So you've had two games now and you've conceded two goals from set pieces. Last week, I thought they defended it poor with Sangare. The ball came into the back post with Collins, knocks it back to Sangara, gets your shot, and they win the second ball again.

23:53That's two goals where they've lost that second ball duel, if you like. How do you go about changing that? Obviously, I know they made two substitutions because it ends up with Kudus and Doggy as the two men that are trying to do the blocks. It just depends. I think sometimes the timing, the run, the ball is perfect. I think in the goals they've conceded, it's probably structural things. It's early on in the season, and I don't want to be too negative towards Tottenham, and I don't want to take anything away from Newcastle because I thought they fully deserved the win. and thought they was excellent.

24:21But the goals they've conceded, I think they was avoidable. And probably more importantly, understanding the importance of those moments. They're so big. The first half was cagey. Set plays are so important. Nico Gonzalez comes into the team. You see the impact he's had in terms of the goals. And you wonder actually how many training sessions that he's been part of since he joined from Manchester City and then able straight away to impact the match. Yeah, I mean, good players. They shouldn't need too much time. And let's be honest, he's a player that's come from a fellow Premier League club, a club that's been very well run been successful as well so he's a top player he's a top player I don't think there's any doubt in that and he's come ready and I think credit to him he's obviously had a pre-season where there was a bit of uncertainty but he's come into the game from a physical point of view and mentally he was ready to compete from minute one and that's the mentality you need that's the mentality you need for top players What did you like about him today Jamie?

25:11Everything I mean it was a really good signing didn't it and you know they lose Gimaris Tonali two of the most important players arguing in Newcastle's recent history. You know, they were the engine room with Joe Linton in there. And he came in and it was seamless for me. His passing was good. His range of passing was good. And I think he's actually got probably a lot more to his game than what he showed. It was difficult. When he first went to Manchester City, he was probably almost in a no-win situation. You were taken over from Rodri, who was so formidable at his job. and he didn't quite, obviously, he didn't go to plan because Man City lost so many games and everyone was just talking about Rodri all the time.

25:49Now, he's going to go here. He's got an opportunity to be the main man, play well, you know, look at that, the line-breaking passes, you know, things like that and the confidence that he's going to have and he'll know, he probably didn't realise how big a club Newcastle is. He does now. This is a huge club and a huge opportunity for him. I bet he can't wait for his home debut now. They were brewing the absence of Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes and they might well have a new hero here for Newcastle fans, and they haven't had too long to wait, have they either?

27:41You'll see that Friday at 6 o 'clock on Sky Sports Football.

27:47First victory in the Premier League for Matthias Gaisler as the Newcastle boss and we can get his reaction with Patrick Davison. Well Matthias, I think a good start just became a great start. Are you stood there really happy with what you've seen from your players today? Yeah, incredible. I'm really proud. We are really proud as a club, as the coaching staff to see a team on the pitch delivering already on a high level the match plan but also seeing players fully committed to what we're doing and this is a good start. Really, really proud and also a moment to enjoy. Did this feel performance-wise and in terms of understanding your match plan, did this feel like actually quite a big step forward, even from last week?

28:32We did well also last week. Therefore, it was a step in the right direction again against a strong opponent with huge signings during the window now. So this is something we were aware of, but how we handled that challenge was amazing. And it looks like it's been a hard week of work on the training ground because the first goal you tried that move 40 seconds into the game, nearly got a goal. And then it did work, obviously, for Alanga opening the scoring. So just tell us in your preparation what you'd seen in terms of where the space was and how hard you worked on that. It's always the same. As a coach, you try to emphasize where you could potentially stress the opponent.

29:17You find gaps, you analyse that and this is what matters today. But in general, we try to keep our principles on the pitch independent of the opponent today. It happened two or three times and we're happy to see that. Are you surprised in any way with how quickly this team looks? I mean, it doesn't look like you only had three weeks in pre-season. It doesn't look like a new team. It's also not a complete new team and the DNA of Newcastle United is a good fit to the playing style I like to see. So therefore we saw already in the past similarities and now we use the time in the best efficient way.

30:02And I'm again proud to see that already. I asked you before the game about Nico Gonzalez, what does he add? And you just gave one word, quality. You were right. So you see. We need a longer answer this time though. Then I'm happy that you somehow think that I'm smart because I think it's just obviously when he has the ball, he has a good timing when to deliver in the last line, but also when to slow a little bit down the game and finding time to regenerate our batteries. So it's a really good debut. So Wyssa and Alanga are, by their own admission, delivering far more than they did at any point last season.

30:45How much of that is down to you? I don't take the compliments yet, so I try just to encourage them, to motivate them, to support them. Not only the two of them, the whole squad together with my staff, we're here to deliver these tasks. That's our job. But again, I'm really happy to see the improvement. And on a personal level, you were a few seconds away last week from your first Premier League win, but this week you've done it. What does it mean? I know you've probably not done it yet, but you look back at the journey, getting to this point. It's only one step, but it must mean a lot. Yeah, it means a lot.

31:26I just said that to the lads in the locker room that we can count now also on our defensive stability. The clean sheet was today a big, big goal and we delivered, so I'm pretty proud. and just a couple of days left until the transfer window closes. From what you've seen today, no more business needed or is it important actually not to think like that? You still need a bit of help. Yeah, we are realistic. We don't see the high too high now. Don't expect me now to think already too big. We have high ambitions and we know what is needed. The squad is strong. That's also something we saw today. But there are still a couple of days left and then we can talk again.

32:10Can you be specific in terms of any positions, in terms of what must happen for you to be right up until January at least? I'm here now for three weeks. You know me already a bit. I expected a one-word answer, to be honest. No. Thank you. Well done today. Thanks. I've seen his bigger press conferences. He gives absolutely nothing away on that front, but he has certainly made an impact already, hasn't he? Ryan from young manager yourself to young manager Jaesler what's impressed you about the way that he's handled himself the way he's gone about things over his first three or four weeks I think ultimately he's got results which is always the most important thing to come in the stage in which he did into pre-season brings its challenges but he's obviously he's got something about him which I think is when you're managing a big club it's how you manage the media the messaging that you get across to the fans to the players they'll be able to feel that and like I say he's following a top top manager who've done an incredible job they've lost some big players um but they've also they've also got some players there that that are stepping up let me drill into that a little bit is that then in terms of he's got a bit about him is that is that perception is that aura is that personality are those things all that you need to be a top manager yeah I think everything and ultimately you're being judged by the players every single day so on the training pitch in the meeting rooms, that's something.

33:36But then also to the fans and to the outside world, you see him, you hear him, and I think he speaks very well. He's got a good personality. And like I say, you need that when you're managing a big club. It's a bit of that. It's a bit... I remember when we first saw Jurgen Klopp, I'm not trying to compare him to Jurgen Klopp just yet, but I remember Jurgen Klopp having cuddles with his players. We used to talk about it, and we'd go, who am I, one of those cuddles? Because there was that kind of relationship with the players, and we don't see that very often. But already you see Anthony Ilanga, They're embracing and there's obviously a bit of mutual respect and love for each other already.

34:08That's hard to find. Now, I think what has helped him, and some people thought, how can that help because you've lost two good players, is getting the likes of Guimaraes out and Tonali out when they did. Because I think if they would have stayed at the club, in and around the dressing room, every single press conference, every single talk, every single thing in the dressing room, would have been circling around those two players. The fact they've got him out, the fact they've kept Hall, Lewis Hall is a really big thing as well. He'll stay. He's not going anywhere. There's no chance he leaves. Not now, maybe in the future Windows he might, but no way they sell him now.

34:44I think it's really helped him because he can just get his arms around the players that he wants that are here and they want to do something. And I think the fact that they're playing so well has a lot to do with that because sometimes it's not what you get out, it's who you keep in. You want players that are going to play for you. It wasn't just those two, Jamie, as well. It was Anthony Gordon. So there were three big players, three big personalities, three big characters, three players of huge experience in that Newcastle dressing room. And actually, when he took over, it did feel a little bit like he was, well, Kieran Trippi's experience as well.

35:14It felt like he was almost walking into a crisis club. That was the perception at the time. Of course. And taking over from, as Ryan and I were saying, taking over from Eddie Howe, who's an icon at the club. I thought, this is a really difficult one. If you don't start well, you're going to get under pressure in about 10 games. That's how it felt. But he's obviously got a confidence and awe about him, as you mentioned. And now it looks almost quite healthy. You know, if you looked at, you know, Tonali and Gonzalez, that feels like it's a reasonable replacement for him. Kimmeres is an amazing player.

35:42You know, they're going to miss that energy. And he was talismanic for that club. You know, Anthony Gordon, the pace that he's got. But, you know, they've got Alanga now. And hopefully they can still get a couple of players in for him. We can speak live now to the match winner, Anthony Alanga. hugely impressive last week against Liverpool, hugely impressive tonight at Spurs. And here he is waiting to speak to us. Anthony, thank you so much. We were just talking about your new manager. Tell us your impression of what he's like. Since day one, I feel like we've clicked. He spoke to me and he spoke to all the lads as well.

36:17We know what he expects from us. He pushes us every single day. I feel like you can see in the performances, we really want to keep a clean sheet. and then we know going forward we've got the speed and the quality to hurt teams. It's a lot of noise external, but we've got to focus on what we can do in a team. We believe in ourselves, we believe in our qualities, and all we can do now is just let our football do the talking, really. Now, Anthony, you are certainly doing that. Here is a stat for you. The last Newcastle player to score the first two Premier League games of the season, Alan Shearer, 23 years ago.

36:50I got the celebration. So what do you think of that? Nice, obviously. I just want to keep on pushing, really. I feel like since the manager's come in, it's given me that freedom, that confidence to just keep pushing on. And obviously since the World Cup coming back, I feel really good. And the lads as well are helping me on and off the ball, you know, and the way we want to play. It's just about keeping going. We've still got 36 games left in the Premier League. We can't just dwell on these two. We've got to keep on pushing on and find ways to improve. and that's the type of player I am. I know I'm not a finished article.

37:26I know I can always improve and it starts again. Got to go back to the training ground and see what I can do better and learn from there. But you'll be aware, you've referenced the outside noise, Anthony, already. You'll be aware that people are saying that you are a player reborn. Your first season at Newcastle, big price tag, no goals. Now two in two. What is the difference? Did it score in the Champions League? I know, in the Premier League, I didn't score, but all I can focus on is what I do at the training ground. I know last season wasn't my best, but I feel like as long as I keep on improving and keep on learning from the guys at the training ground, eventually it will click.

38:07Right now, it's going well, but I just want to keep on improving and keep on helping the team win in games because at the end of the day, that's what matters the most. Yeah, one today. Looking forward to the game against Bournemouth next week. Anthony, Jamie Redknapp, congratulations. Congratulations, mate. Wonderful performance. Great goal as well. Just talk us through it because I want to take you back to about 30 seconds into the game. And there was a clear plan of what you were trying to achieve with yourself and Dedic. You made a run in behind Andy Robertson. Hopefully you can see it there.

38:35This was something that the manager has spoken to you about very early? Yeah, for sure. We know the first 15 minutes, they're going to come all gone blazing. So it's important to hurt them in behind. and I've got a really good relationship, me and Amar, and we've been working on things like this in training, and I feel like that was the start of it. I was a bit annoyed at the first half because I felt like I was making runs for runs, but no one could find me. But at the end of the day, you can make 10 runs and only get one ball, but I just need to keep on doing it, keep on doing it. And I feel like that was the warning sign, and in the second half, we got it right.

39:09And it felt like there was a little battle between you and Tonali, where he was having to mark you at times, and I can see you smiling because you know you had him for pace. And as that ball comes in for your goal, and it was obviously a brilliant goal, that seemed to be something as well that you worked on. Nico Gonzalez with that pass from left to right and then obviously your pace running off the back of Tonali. Yeah, again, something we've been working on in training. When you get in them situations, it's instinctively. I know where the goal is. When you're feeling the way I'm feeling right now, it's just about getting it on target.

39:43It's something I've been working on a lot during the summer. with my coach. So I just want to keep on improving. I've not even seen the replay. That's a really nice finish. It's a really nice finish. You talked about your coach. I think I know who you're talking about. I saw a lot of stuff on social media working one-to-one with him on your touch, your skills. How important has that been for you this summer? I think Harry King, is that right? Yeah, there's a few coaches I've been working with and Harry is one of them. But the main thing is when I get in them situations to to to be calm because at the end of the day i'm working so hard to get in them positions and now it's just by finding that getting the end product right and that's something i've been working on and i just want to keep on working on it um because again i'm not a finished article and but yeah that's just a credit to the guys i've been working with at the club as well and yeah it's just about keeping going really and you're you obviously have you've been got such great pace how important then is it to at times because you have that pace just slow yourself down and compose yourself to get that finish away like you did yes it's really important because i could get in them like last season i got in a few of them opportunities but it's just the final bits and it's important to slow down because you could find a pass or again you could find a finish so i just need to there's times where i can speed up and there's times i can slow down but it's just about finding that balance.

41:08And like I said, two games in, two goals, it's a decent start. But I want more. I just want to keep going. The celebration looked familiar as well to us, Anthony. So we just, we'll show you this in the monitor as well. We think we've seen this somewhere before against Spurs. I've always said Deleuze is my favourite player. So I knew if it scored today, that celebration was going to come out. Well, he's got his statue, of course. So maybe you can have one next to Alan Shearer's now because you've matched his start to the season. No, I've still got a long way to go to match Alan. He's a legend, so he's an inspiration to keep pushing.

41:46We've enjoyed talking to you. Keep it going. Thanks very much. Congratulations. Thank you, guys. Well done, Anthony. Cheers. What do you think of that, Ryan? There is a man who, and I've had this impression talking to him before, he's very serious about his football. He seems humble, hardworking, and that's what you want. That's what you expect. and he started really well, but you can't get carried away with yourself. His two games, he started well and he spoke about the confidence and instinct in that area of the pitch when he arrived. And I guess the challenge for him now is to keep arriving in there as much as possible because when you start scoring goals and you get that feeling, you can go on a run.

42:26So the challenge for him is keep arriving, keep practicing on the training pitch, like he said, building those relationships and trying to affect as many games as possible. He was nodding in approval, Jamie. Your question about that slowing down. Because when you're a player so fast, why is that so important? I think we'd all love to have had that pace, you know, and it is. Thierry, we've got Thierry on Monday night football. Thierry's a great exponent of that. And somehow he managed the beautiful speed with the balance and the poise and be able to compose himself when you have opportunities to finish.

42:57And I always think about Thierry as he cut inside and just sort of, as he's falling, just bending it into the corner. and that's something that Anthony does possess. I genuinely, I saw it in Nottingham Forest. There were times when I thought, there's a real player there. And then last year, like all of us, and I'm sure he would have moments at home thinking, what's happened to me? Scored in the Champions League. Yeah, but what's happened to my game? Why can't I, what am I, I don't, I can't, the ball doesn't feel like it's my friend anymore. You know, and then the crowd starts to get on you and that relationship goes between the body and the ball and it's hard.

43:27And once you're in that place, sometimes you never think you're going to get out of it. And then he worked hard at pre-season. a good World Cup and he comes back to pre-season and then a couple of doors have opened for him like Anthony Gordon going okay, it's my chance now I'm going to start the first weekend of the season he picks a team he sees his name on that team sheet and that's all it takes sometimes you need that little bit of love and that belief and he's taken it now and now the Newcastle fans that have probably given him plenty of grief are starting to think actually we might have got this wrong we've got a player here and that finish last week when he did have time to think about it could that be the difference the springboard for an entire season because as you well know It's just that intangible confidence.

44:04Yeah, I mean, the finish last week was equally as good because I'm pretty sure when the transition happened and he had the foot race from inside of his own half, his eyes were probably lighting up because he see the space and he see the opportunity. And sometimes they're difficult. When you run, he probably had an 80-yard sprint to then compose yourself. And I think when you're running that fast, the tendency is to hit the ball higher. And I think his balance in that one was excellent. He stayed over the ball. He got over it, hit across the keeper. Today's one was a lot different. He had to slow himself down.

44:37He had to adjust. And he almost swivelled on the full. And I mean, the finish today is as good a finish as you're going to see all weekend. Yeah, very impressive. What about Newcastle's business then with just a few days left of this transfer window? I wouldn't answer the question from Patrick on that. But this is what they've done so far. I think what's striking, Jamie, about a lot of these is the age. and that second last column there on the right-hand side because they've obviously targeted potential and youth. What do they need, if anything, to really arm him for another crack at European football?

45:14I think sometimes just thickening up the squad, just getting the players in and around. I mean, the amazing thing is they've got two signings here in Torre and Bamba that we haven't even seen really play yet. We've seen obviously glimpses. Dedic looks like a really good right-back at 24. Sometimes to come into the Premier League, he's adjusted really well. you know Hornicek as well and Stadler midfield player I like so it looks like that business has been smart you know Tottenham have gone with tried and trusted players but a lot of those obviously apart from Nikov I'm right in saying they've all come from you know different countries and but they've adjusted well and I think the expect there was no expectations which has probably helped the manager a little bit because there's no real pressure but he'll just look at it and think maybe another another striker if he could get one in just to give just to help take that pressure off them.

46:01Obviously, Dan Byrne's going to be fit. He's a club captain. Need him back for what he brings as well. But I don't know. What else do you think they need in that squad, Ryan? No, I probably agree. They seem quite a stable squad as a whole. I think they've recruited really well. The one that stands out for me is all the zeros there. So you've got players coming into the league that are hungry to impress. But then I also go back to the responsibility of the ones that know the Premier League. And when you start getting to November, December and the intensity is still super high. They need to add up and take more responsibility and help these players.

46:34But they've started really well, the new signings. There's some relationships that have also been gelling from last season. So yeah, I'm sure if you're a Newcastle fan, it's been quite an exciting start for you. I think as well, Ryan, if they would have lost these first two games, this is how it can change so quickly in football. Their window would have looked so much different because they'd have gone, we need players. The manager, we need players. but now they're probably thinking, no, we're all right. We don't need to do anything and they might live to regret that. So if there are a couple of opportunities and they can, I don't know what their PSR is going to be like now but obviously they must have some money available.

47:07They probably do need to, if anything, my advice would be just to make sure that you give him the opportunity and the players that he needs.

47:20Boom! No! Come on! Kids, what should we order for dinner? Pizza! Thai! tacos hey boys let's not get loco what kind of restaurant sells pizza Thai and tacos I'll never please all my guys why can't we have food without the fight with Wonder you can combine 20 restaurants and one delivery so your family never has to compromise download the app today Wonder food without the fight Jamie Carragher busy David Prutton busy Gary Neville very busy Micah Richards. Getting his haircut. Of course he is. Kelly Cates. Oh, yeah. Oh, wait a minute. Now busy. So no one from Sky Sports can do this radio ad? Yeah, but have you seen how many matches they've got this season?

48:04They're all just too busy. Fine. I'll do it myself. Sky Sports have got 1 ,500 live matches this season. Search Get Sky Sports to find out more. That's not bad, you know. Do you reckon I could get on the telly? Don't push it. Well, there goes that dream. You're listening to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game.

48:31What a good night for Newcastle United, their first win of the season, their first away win and their first win of any kind under their new manager, Matthias Gaisler.

48:46And that will explain why they have done so well on the finalysis ratings. This evening, Anthony Alanga, the top pick. You have been rating the players at home on the app. Anthony Alanga, Dedic, Visser and Hall, the top players for Newcastle. And a bit of a sorry story for Spurs, I'm afraid. Matthias Fernandes, Spurs fans say was the best of them at 60. Alanga, actually, the top rated player across the Premier League today in the finalysis app. 86.

49:21Back down to earth with a bump for Roberto De Zerbi, who was hoping that the game against Charlton in the Carabao Cup was a sign of things to come, but it's been the same old story in the Premier League. It's actually his first home defeat as Spurs manager in the league. And he's giving his reaction to Patrick Davison. Roberto, you've had the players in the dressing room there for quite a while. I know you can't share everything, some of it's private, but can you give us an idea of what you've said to them, what you've asked of them? Can you give us an idea of what I'm saying?

50:16game we shoot we had more chance we shoot more in goal we are not team yet we have to improve in a lot of things but it's normal for now for a new a new team is a is it forget the result because the The result is more important than the other things, but I'm not angry. I think we are working well. We were unlucky today for the result, especially for the result. So the problems you saw today, like you said, the distances, is a lot of that down in your view to it being a lot of new players? Some players came back today. You had five changes from the Brentford game. So is a lot of the problems explained by that do you think?

51:09Yes, but anyway we had more control of the ball. Yes, we can improve in the defensive phase in the distances. Sometimes we regain the ball, especially in the first half and we had a chance to score. I think also with the ball we can improve. we can keep the order better much better and yes but is a is part of work when you change many players when you and when you start the new project a new team is like this football the first goal they scored it felt like they've been trying to do that all match since the very first minute what more can you do to prevent a goal like that is that about the initial press the pressure on the ball being better?

52:02No, Tonali lost the duel with Elanga. In that moment was Tonali with Elanga. But yes, one part of the game, one problem of the game was the defence's face, the order, the distances in the defence's face. But I think we had more chance to score and we didn't. There were some boos at full time from the supporters, which I guess maybe are less about just today, but the fact that they've seen two seasons, not with you, but very poor home performances, very poor league performances. Is the key now not to panic, to be patient if they can be? I have no panic. I know very well where I am going, what was the plan, what could be the difficult problem we could find in our way.

53:08I'm sorry for the fans for the result. I'm sorry for the players for the result. But we have to improve and to change two seasons like the last two is impossible in 10 days or is impossible with the paper in transfer market. We have to work hard on the pitch. We have to find the connection between the players because last season, before the end of the season, we were in championship and we stay up, I think, together. Not just the player, but with the fans, with the club. So now we have to be calm. That is increasingly hard for the Spurs. Fans stayed up on the final day of last season, 17th in the last two seasons.

54:07Big transfer spend. They're expecting more. Do they have the patience to go on this journey? How good were Spurs today and did they deserve more than they got? I think goals change games. I agree with him. I thought the second half of the first half, I thought they were the better team. they played between the lines a lot more and it felt a lot more like his team the problem was it was arriving with the wingers and nothing really materialised obviously Pedro Porro played as a right winger now going forward in three or four weeks time that's not going to be the case and I trust the manager, I really like him he's proven he's a top coach I thought the job he'd done at the end of last season was really good because he found a way to win when the confidence was low and I just think in this probably initial period now where players are still building relationships, getting fitter.

54:57You still need to find a way to get a result or two just to keep the scoreball ticking and build a bit of momentum. But I like the manager. He's honest. I think he's a good coach. And I think Tottenham are going to look completely different in three or four weeks' time. It's tough for Spurs fans, isn't it though, Jamie? Because it's here we go again. So poor at home last season. They've started off in the worst possible fashion here. But can you see Green shoots with the way they, particularly today, they've tried to play? It was a lot better than last week. But it couldn't be any worse. They were awful last week.

55:26But what I will say is, and I'm not trying to repeat, but they're a team that's going to look totally different in four or five weeks. Now they still should be doing better than what they are. And I still have a couple of worries. I look to that balance in midfield. I think with Fernandes, Tenali and Bentancourt, I don't think three of them, one of them is necessarily a 10. Tell on that left-hand side doesn't do enough for me. I want more, you know, I want to be more productive. I want a bit more energy, pace, goal scoring threat. I feel they need to get someone left-hand side because they're extremely lopsided.

55:58On the other side, you know, they've got, if they get Kuliszewski back, they've got Savio. They've got Kudus as well, who's now going to be fit. You know, Marmouche and Solanke, they've got those two from an attacking point of view. And I still feel, and I don't know if you agree with this, Ryan, that there might still be a bit of movement because that's the hard thing for him. and they've got obviously players to come back in from fitness. Maddison is out. It could do with him at the moment because I think he gives them a little bit of an extra dimension at midfield. Someone that can play that cute and clever pass.

56:30Now, is he the answer going forward if Tottenham want to become a top four, top five team? But one thing they have to get over, forget about, it's irrelevant about all the players, they have to get over this fear about playing at home because there's no doubt, it can't be a coincidence that their home record is so poor. They have to change that. They have to want to go. When things are going, well, you can't wait to get home, can you? We're at home this week. Brilliant. There's got a crowd behind us. They have a fear about playing at home, Ryan. Yeah, and the results probably dictate that. The energy inside the place, you can probably feel that.

57:04But one result can change a lot. And you get a win and the feeling can be completely different. You need the personality to play at home. You need to look at the stadium. It's incredible. It's beautiful. The fans are amazing. when they're with you. It's an incredible and it's an intimidating place to play at and they need to tap into that. I think you referenced it at half-time, Ryan. You need to be brave on the ball but brave off the ball as well in terms of that really aggressive press. Can it be just a question of adding more to this group? Would you advocate them doing that before Tuesday?

57:37It wouldn't surprise me. Jamie mentioned it on the left side. There was a couple of situations. If I think of Mitoma at Brighton under the Zerbe, he was electric he was such a threat and the way they play with the box in the middle of the park the responsibility of the wingers to be goal scorers is huge in his teams and we've seen the last two weekends the front three last weekend and having Pedro Porro who's arguably one of the better right backs in the league just won the World Cup with Spain playing as a right winger it probably suggests at the moment these players aren't quite fit enough or not quite ready so it wouldn't surprise me but he mentioned there about staying calm he knows they need to work on a training pitch but he also knows they need to pick up results.

58:17We'll know in 48 hours, won't we, Jamie? One thing that was talked about for Spurs last season in terms of a weakness was their ability to progress the ball up the pitch from those central defensive areas. I think the best number of line-breaking passes last year was 18. Van Hecker's done better than that, 22, on his home debut. Is this a real positive, would you say, in terms of Spurs building moves moving forward? Yeah, I think this one here was a really nice piece of play. You know, the ball goes up. No, it wasn't that one, but it was another one in a minute. But that's what you're looking to do, just playing the ball forward.

58:55So you give people more time on the ball. And there was a few times with him, especially Van Hecker, that he gave them that little bit more quality there from Porro, which we normally expect him to do. This pass here, it looks like he's under pressure, but he just cuts across one here and all of a sudden you're out the other side. You know, that's the difference of what he can bring. And that's why I'm not worried about Tottenham in three or four weeks, once they start to get that confidence and belief and you start to get your best players, Tonali up to speed, Fernandes, it will take a different shape.

59:21I think people are enjoying the fact now that Tottenham spent all this money and not playing well, or should they have wasted this money. He will prove to be a really good signing, as will a lot of them. I've got no doubt whatsoever. So who finishes higher, do you think, this season? We like to make snap judgments, don't we, after two weekends. Who finishes higher, Spurs or Newcastle? I think Tottenham will still finish higher than Newcastle. I do. and then listen to some Newcastle fans and they should enjoy this moment but I think that the squad that they have and given them six or seven weeks we're getting the players up to speed I think they will but Newcastle is surprising because I think a lot of Newcastle fans with the start of the year they're probably just thinking we're a bottom half team now we're going to really struggle we just want to make sure we don't get in a relegation fight they should be thinking going the other way now but I think Tottenham will finish above them Where do you think Spurs should be aiming for?

1:00:07I don't think they should set a limit I think when you're a club this size and you're spending the money they have I think they should just try and set the highest possible standard and create the best possible culture. So I think for them, it needs to be higher. They need to aim higher. They've not got European football this year, which the last two seasons, the squad has not been able to cope with the demands of three games a week. Whereas this year with a top coach and new sign-ins, that enthusiasm, I think they'll come strong. Spurs fans will have enjoyed listening to you, Ryan, I'm sure. Thank you very much for being with us tonight.
