In short
Arsenal host Newcastle at the Emirates and win 1-0 to return to top of the Premier League, three points clear of Manchester City. The episode focuses on how Arsenal ground out the result despite nerves, with the key moment being a set-piece: in the 10th minute, Eberechi Eze scores from outside the box after a short-corner routine that takes Newcastle by surprise. Mikel Arteta and pundits stress “one outstanding moment” plus a clean sheet as the difference, even if Arsenal weren’t dominant (shots 11-13, possession 45-55). Notable examples include Arsenal repeating short corners until the third attempt pays off, and goalkeeper saves plus defending from Gabriel and Saliba.
Guests
Paul Merson (former England/Arsenal player, pundit) and Jamie Redknapp (former Liverpool player, pundit). Also interviewed: Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, goal-scorer Eze, manager Arteta, and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.
Key claims
Arsenal must “chalk off” games and win the next matches; pressure can “strangle” performance; Pope’s VAR incident was debated but not decisive.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:07This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Thanks for joining us. Arsenal welcomes Newcastle United to the Emirates for Saturday night football this week. Here is how the game finished.
0:30back on top and you can see the relief that Mikel Arteta feels because his team have really put him through the ringer one goal ultimately enough a goal scored as early as the 10th minute from a well worked corner routine a Berreze with a beautiful strike and it's a strike that means Arsenal now have a points advantage over Manchester City again. One that they can extend if they repeat this victory here against Fulham in a week's time. Anguish and angst took over. Newcastle made life uncomfortable for them as well, but in the end, Arsenal hold out on what really, Gary, has been a real test of nerve for them today.
1:23Well, exhausting all round. Those Arsenal players just slumped on the ground at the end of the game. The Arsenal fans, they'll need a week off working between this one and Fulham next Saturday and it's going to be an uncomfortable running, but one that they're very much still in. The victory is absolutely essential today. Yes, in a perfect world they get more goals, but they didn't play well enough. They're actually fortunate to come out with the three points and he was the key man. He gets them out of the match just for his goal and we move forward. Well, Arsenal players, manager and fans will need a Sunday lying down in a darkened room after that.
2:02Final score, Arsenal 1, Newcastle 0. Well, they're celebrating now, but this, I tell you, is absolutely exhausting for anybody in an Arsenal situation. I don't know if you were watching from home or here in the stadium, but I can tell you, we stood with the Arsenal fans for the last 10-15 minutes of this and they are aging rapidly and it's just relief getting over the line they groan when seven minutes of stoppage time was uh went up but it's one down four to go and crucially it's Arsenal now with a three-point advantage and that goal has seen their goal difference go one better than Manchester City's as well.
2:52And now it's Fulham here next week with a chance to go six points clear. They've got to come back and do it all again having already gone to play against Atletico Madrid. Paul Merson, I'm just explaining how exhausting it must be for anybody who has been asked on persuasion. I can't believe it. I don't get here too often anymore to the games but wow, honestly a bag of nerves, you know, just the tension, the freak it but as a result they've got the result they need it wasn't right but they won and that's the most important thing guy i was talking to jeremy said this is damaging for my mental health absolutely as we were walking down because we've found ourselves a pitch side now a guy just said to me i've aged 10 years today and that's every single game the emotion that they're going through can you imagine how the players are feeling and the manager and mikhail arteta's there giving everything to this team, but they won.
3:48It was exhausting, but they won, and three points was what it was all about today. Can it be any more than that, Paul? The fact they've got another clean sheet, if they can rely on that, it might just take one goal in each game. It's just winning games, David, and that clean sheet is a bonus. We'd like to score a couple more goals, but I said before, just got to win the next two games. Put pressure on Man City before they play. That's one game ticked off, Another one to come. That chance by Visser. Oh, my goodness. That goes in. It's all changed. But they withstood it. They defended Everson well towards the end.
4:23Gabriel, Saliba, he'd cap it up. What was fantastic. Big three points. And were there just glimpses as well, Merce? When Bakayo Saka came on in that last 20 minutes of something a bit brighter for Arsenal to build on. Yeah, I just think him and Odegaard work as a real good pair. and he occupies the Fender's sack. And people don't take liberties with him. They don't want to bond forward. And it keeps the Fender's back. And I thought, yeah, I thought he looked sharp when he come on, had a good shot. But, yeah, you can see the atmosphere in the crowd now. The fans are buzzing. They know big result against a very good football team.
4:58We can grab some instant reaction because the skipper, Martin Odegaard, is with Patrick Davison. Martin, it's not supposed to be easy winning titles. I saw you just collapse to the turf. at full time. How much did that demand from you? Yeah, it was tough. It was very intense, very physical. And, yeah, especially for me playing 90 again was tough. But, yeah, we did everything we could and we got the win. And that was the most important thing today, to bounce back with a win. And I thought we did well, you know, to get off the line and get the three points, which was the main thing. Talk us through the corner routines today.
5:32We've seen you go long to great effect all season. I wondered, would it have been like a late decision when you see, like, the big lineup that Eddie Howes picked? I mean, we practice it all. We practice a short one. We practice first post, second post, everything, you know, and that's our quality. We can score in so many different ways and today we did it brilliantly. I thought we were quite dangerous a few more times as well, so, yeah, credit to the work we do at the training ground, you know. How much nerve almost does it take to keep doing it? Because you could almost sense people getting irritated with you doing it for a third time, but I guess corners one and two sort of open up that space for third time and then obviously Ezra's quality is unbelievable.
6:11Yeah I mean I think the stadium was a bit annoyed that we took it short a few times but yeah it paid off in the end and a great finish from Ebb so yeah it was brilliant. Basically how demanding is it? I mean I reference you dropping to the turf obviously you've lost looks like you've lost Kai today lost Ebb as well for all of you does it feel like I don't know, like you're right on the brink, you're really having to push yourself. I mean, the schedule is crazy, but it is what it is. And we're used to it, we just have to keep going, you know. And yeah, it's the end of the season, so just leave everything out that we have inside and just fight every single game and for every single win.
6:47And we did that today and we just have to keep going, look for the next game now and win again and keep going. And of course, like for so much of this season, tonight when you look at the table, you'll see Arsenal on top of the league and that's the beat on Endor right? Yeah that's where we want to be it's going to go all the way to the end and we're ready for it, we're going to fight every single day and yeah looking forward to it thank you
7:13Yeah Martin Odegaard with a pretty honest reflection there, it's just grinding them out isn't it, just ticking them off Mikel Arteta said five games got to win them all and this mini season started tonight against Newcastle and the clean sheet was everything and that set-piece goal, the set-pieces which have been so crucial to Arsenal have helped them over the line here against Newcastle to take advantage at the top once again.
7:42Right, what a day it's been of Premier League football. Well, what a weekend already because it started last night, embarrassing for Sunderland, but a five-goal victory for Nottingham Forest, pull them clear of the bottom three. Fulham beating Aston Villa by a goal to nil in the early kickoff. Brian Sessegnon's goal, the difference there. That sees Villa slip to fifth in the table. Overtaken now by Liverpool, for whom Alexander Isak was on the score sheet in their 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Andy Robertson with a lovely finish there, and Florian Wurtz finishing it off as well. West Ham managed to beat Everton by two goals to one.
8:16They led. Everton got themselves back into it through Kieran Dewsby Hall, but then off the bench came Callum Wilson, 90 plus 2 for win it for the Hammers and that was a real blow for Spurs who thought they were climbing out of the bottom 3 having won 1-0 at Molyneux and losing maybe a couple of players in the process Solanke and Xabi Simons both going off injured but Palinja came off the bench to score the winning goal and just 9 minutes into this contest this evening a very Eze from outside the box from the short corner routine won it for Arsenal you can scan the QR code there it will take you straight to the Sky Sports app Well, you can catch up on all the weekend's highlights so far.
8:56Just one more Premier League game this weekend. None tomorrow. We do have the Monday night football. Manchester United taking on Brentford.
9:13So it's Spurs still in the bottom three. They climbed out for all of four minutes and 20 seconds before Callum Wilson actually won the game for West Ham to keep that gap at two points. Forest not quite there yet. They have a five-point safety cushion and Leeds six-point advantage over Spurs. Remember, they still have to play. Newcastle staying there in 14th with a fourth successive Premier League defeat. That's nine in 12 matches now. And for Arsenal, that is all that matters this evening, that they are out in front once again. Three points clear of Manchester City. one superior on the goal difference.
9:54They're slowly catching up on the goals scored just two behind now. And remember, they play next before City then play two games on the bounce. It's Fulham here next Saturday. Confirmation of that, it's live with us. We do it all over again if Arsenal fans can bear it. Five o 'clock next Saturday. and Manchester City have to wait till a week on Monday to go to Everton on the Monday Night Football. 12:57This is the Sky Sports Premier League Podcast. Let's get more analysis of the game and return to the studio. A sixth 1-0 win of the season with a 22nd set-piece goal that they've managed at Fashion as well. It still needed that quality strike from Ibirri Eze from outside the box to beat Nick Pope. And really, there's not too much in this when you look at the statistical breakdown between these two. I think the conclusion is there was very little in the game. 11 shots from Arsenal, 13 to Newcastle. Their shot count did dry up a little bit in that second half. They still managed to create a big chance for Visser, which blazed over.
13:41That would have had City fans hopping. And Arsenal with less possession as well, 45 % to Newcastle's 55%. It was all about the moments and Arsenal managed to create a moment and finish the moment, which has been your mantra, I think, all day today, Paul. It was just about getting over the line. Yeah, it sounded a lot easier saying it than doing it. Was it harder than you actually expected it to be today? Yeah, I don't get it too often, but I could get the feeling, even I was getting involved, the nerves were setting in, and it's not a nice watch. And I don't mean that in a horrible way with the team, I just think it's very, very nervy, very nervy.
14:23It's been so long that it's sort of unenjoyable, if you know what I mean. Do you know what I mean? like you should be enjoying these moments, but it's hard to enjoy at the moment because it's just so nervy. And that's with the players, that's with the fans, that's with everybody. You know, I'm not blaming anybody. I just, it's not enjoyable at the moment. It's hard. But this isn't new, Jamie. This has been the case for quite a few weeks now coming here, hasn't it? Years. Two years. Two years. You're right, Paul. I totally agree. And you can tell yourself all you like. Pressure is a privilege. We're giving ourselves such an opportunity, But actually, when you're out there, sometimes fear can strangle you.
15:01It can take over you. And all the simple things that normally you just do because you've done it since you were 10, 11 years of age, you find so difficult. And that's what's happening with Arsenal right now. You know, individual mistakes or players maybe not having that final pass. And it just suffocates you. It stops you being the player that you are. And that's why it was so important today that there was one outstanding moment of real quality by Eberiche Eze that was the real difference. An absolutely incredible moment. Exactly what they needed. And then you know you've got the back four to just hang on to that lead and a fantastic goalkeeper.
15:35A massive three points. And it's going to go on an awful... If they hadn't won today, you just couldn't see a way back for them. But right now they've given themselves a great chance and they can build on this now and get back to that winning run because I think they're going to have to go perfect to the end of the season. And isn't that ultimately, Paul, what it comes down to in these really tense games, in these really tense moments when Arsenal and Manchester City are both trying to win the league. It's those players with X factor, with a little bit of magic in their boots, who can make a difference, like a Cherokee for Manchester City, and like an Eze, who could be that guy for Arsenal.
16:10Well, that's what they bought him for. They bought him for that magic. He's got the magic. He's a very talented footballer. Plays with a lot of freedom. He plays with a lot of freedom. Not many people score that goal. You know, professional footballers, you can take it many times. to get that the way he hit it against a very good goalkeeper in Pope. He's the X factor. You need to get the X factors on the pitch. And they're the ones who make the difference. You know, you'll get your players that run around, you'll work hard and they'll be great for the team. But you have to have to that little bit of magic.
16:40You have to. Otherwise, you just, nothing ever happens. So for me, you know, he's paid back everything in one go. Let's have a look how they managed to create an opening for Abiriezzi on the edge of the box. And Jamie, this is something that we noticed in the first nine minutes. They took three short corners, six before this all season. And it was almost like every time Odegaard was reinforcing the points of Maduweke, because often we'd see Saka swing these in. Because it's exactly right. Because what they're expecting, obviously, with Gabriel and Saliba at the back post, they're going to swing that one in.
17:10They're not expecting a short corner and they're actually thinking, well, OK, we're fine. We've got a good position here. Eze has a shot on his left foot there, which is not his favoured foot. Now, this one, it works perfectly because they're actually thinking, they're not going to do it again. and you can see Havertz find himself in a really good position. He keeps the ball, sets it back perfectly. And Eberici, just watch how he opens his body up here because he knows this time he wants it to be on his right foot. Just keep your eye on him. You can see that they feed it into Havertz. Now he's got an enormous amount of space if he can lay it back.
17:37He just opens his body now. Now he's just started to creep and just say, right, pass it onto my right foot this time. That short step to the left. And then he hits that so well. And as he hits it, you can already see he knows he's off. His body's taking him that way. That's flying into the top corner. Wonderful. technique. Just to be clear, is all that movement, do you think, choreographed so they know if they can get Odegaard out there, they can get the marker to follow him, that that will open up a little gap for Havertz, who knows behind him is Eze waiting? Oh, 100%, 100%, but fair play to Medellewiki and Odegaard because the fans are getting restless after two of them.
18:14The first one went horribly wrong, second one weren't great, but yeah, it's all done to take everybody in for him to be there on his own and it's just a phenomenal phenomenal finish it's worthy of winning any football match you know and and he's done that today and that's that's why that's what he was bought for he was bought for them moments because not many people on that football pitch could do what he done today do you think he his football looks less tense than some of his teammates yeah i'd say a little bit i think as well odegaard as well i feel at times it wasn't necessarily his best game but i always felt when he had the ball there was a bit of calmness about it.
18:51You know, he tried to find the right pass and when Bukayo came on for the last 10-15 minutes, they linked up nicely. But it's difficult. It's very easy for us to sit here. I've been in that position trying to win titles and giving away goals in the last minute and set pieces. Maybe someone hurting you and you're thinking, we're so confident here, we should win. And all the messaging and you can have all the videos, all the positive, you know, information given to you. Pressure can take hold of you. And the fact that they managed that game at the end was a great indictment of what they're trying to do here.
19:20Now, I'm sure the manager were like, let's just keep ticking them off. Yes, you want to win 2-3-0 if you can and try and get your goal difference up because it might come down to goal difference. But right now, the objective was to get three points. They did that with a moment of magic. Did that matter that they didn't push on? You know, when he scored the goal, I said to you, I went, oh, it could be three or four, four or five. Not really. I mean, long as they got over the line, I think if they'd have gone and scored late on Newcastle and drawn one all and we'd be sitting here going, Why didn't they go for it?
19:48But no, it was so important just to win today. Just important. I'm pleased for Jose because, you know, it's been hard for him in ways. You know, he played at Aston Villa away and he fell asleep at the far post and Cash put it in. Never played for a while. It's only the second time that he and Erdegaard have been in the starting line-up since then. Yeah, and that just tells you, I think now it's one of them where Mikel's got to go, you know what, I've got to get my talent on the pitch now. It's gone past that now where we're going to be tight and we're going to be solid, nick a goal. He's got to get his talent on.
20:18And today I thought Odegaard just gives you that calming influence. When he gets on the ball, he's good in tight spaces and he just plays the game at his pace, never panicked. You know, he hasn't got back to the heights where he is at the moment, but that was good enough today. You know, he's a calming influence on the team. We talked about game management, Jamie, just a moment ago. Still, there was a lot of Arsenal fans that were drawing breath when Voltemada manages the fashion little chance that Visser goes through. and it almost is the equalising goal. Yeah, absolutely. It was a good piece of play.
20:52Valdemar just keeps hold of it. You can see there that Arsenal are deep. Valdemar finds himself a nice bit of space. Visser makes a good movement, just can't keep it down. All he has to do is hit that one into the ground. Even if he scuffs it, it goes in. But there was a huge sigh of relief, as you say, Dave. I think that pretty much showed up his season, really, that has. Lovely play. Congratulations. Congratulations. Mikel Arteta has just joined us. You don't want to watch that. What was your feeling when you saw the ball just landing at Viss's foot there? Yeah, there were a lot of balls to watch, to be fair.
21:28That was the biggest chance that they had. But overall, yeah, we got the results that we wanted, and we are very happy. How tense were those final moments? Just one nil. And I guess this team, I think they made five sobs. It felt like they made ten sobs. they keep bringing players in and you see you have the necessity to win the game the margins are very very very short and yeah I think we go through it What did you think of your team's performance though today? There were moments there were moments in the first half there were moments in the second half certainly we had so much discipline and courage and great habits defensively but with the ball there are moments that we have to do much better we want to be much more dominant in the game With the ball?
22:09Yes, with the ball In what areas particularly? In many areas, in the way that we don't finish actions, the amount of time that we get into positions, that we have to have some end product and get set in the final third and continue there, and the play breaks up. But the important thing is the reaction to those plays when that happens. Mikel, it's only the second time Odegaard and Eze have played together. Is that now like all in, get the best players on the pitch, or is it just the way it's just worked out? Well, they haven't been available much in this season, And so that's been a big part, I think, with Kai and Bukaya.
22:44They never played together, which is incredible. So we had to manage a lot of situations this season. Let's see. We have lost a few players tonight as well. But the good thing is that team continues to compete. Mikel, the goal, the set piece. Took three times to get there. Third time lucky. Obviously, something that you'd worked on just to get Eberici Eze, just on the edge of the box free. You scored against Newcastle earlier this season from a short corner. Was that something that you'd obviously worked on to open up that corridor? We have to be very unpredictable in everything that we do in the game.

23:13And obviously when you look at the size, the physicality that they have, the way they defend, we believe that it was a big opportunity for us there to exploit even though the crowd reacted in the first and the second way. In a certain way, which is understandable, but we do things because we believe they're going to give us value and it was a great action to defend. This is why you signed Eze in the first place. Yeah, the ball has to arrive. If you can do anything, the ball has to do the right play in the right position. And if that's the case, then the chances of this happening are bigger. Was your plan for them three corners banged short every time or would you leave that to the players for that?
23:51Because obviously when the first one doesn't work, the fans get restless and then the next one, it was all right, he has a shot. But it takes them to do it again. Do you know what I mean? Was that the plan, would you just keep on doing that? That's the correct answer with the man to the player because we can put it direct and Pope is really good. He can catch it, he can counter with the three front players that they have. And it might not go well. So if we believe it's the best thing to do, do it. And if you make a mistake, an error is part of football, do it again. Mikel, just a couple more for you.
24:19How difficult is it when you've got the lead to get that balance between protecting it because of so much that is at stake and going to try and make it more comfortable for yourself and for the fans? Half time was clear, go and get the second one. But as I said, we didn't finalize enough action. We had openings. there is obviously a really debatable no red card for the second time in two games because against City we should have played against 10 men with 1-1 again. You thought Nick Pope was there. Yes, yes, and I would just watch it back and for me it's clear. Because if that happens with Pope inside the goal and the defender is outside, he fouls and he's a red card.
24:54Personally, I thought Jucharez stopped and that's why I didn't think he got sent off because when the ball goes over, he thinks that Pope's going to clear it. He misses it and then he goes again. and then that's why I thought maybe he didn't get sent off. That's why, because he stops. He stops the trajectory and the run and the speed. Yeah, but if he had carried on running, I think you'd never know. I think, yeah, I thought that was a 50-50. Eze and Havertz, how are they? Let's see. At the moment, they have to be looked after, but hopefully they're going to be OK. One down? One down, four to go.
25:25And now we have to go to Madrid with the spread to go because that's such a beautiful moment for us. We wish you well. Thank you so much. Congratulations on this evening. Thank you. Because it is all about just chalking them off, isn't it? As he said at this point of the season for Mikel Arteta. And there is obviously concern in the camp about... Oh, still got a bit of talent. There is obviously concern in the camp about two of their better attacking players in Eze and Havertz. Yes, and it makes it more difficult because at least when you've got an option to come off the bench and you need that striker, whether you start with Havertz, which does feel like the better option out of the two, otherwise it puts an enormous amount of pressure.
26:06Maybe you could play someone else up front. You could even think about maybe playing Eze as a false knight so he could come into areas as well. But you'd like to have that other one as an option. So it didn't look good, to be honest. Eze, maybe less so. He might be OK. But I didn't feel that Havertz was going to be OK for a couple of weeks. But I'm not a doctor. But he was really honest there, wasn't he? And that is not a manager that's pleased with the way his team's performed this evening. Yeah, I understand what he said. I mean, the one for me was when Jucharez went down the left. He's just got to roll it across.
26:36You know, them little moments, you know, they could have gone up the other end and scored then. You've got to take care of them moments. And I think it's concentration. Again, nerves gets the best of you. You ask any footballer, if it's one thing you could bottle up, it would be confidence. And sometimes for a team at the top of the league and in the semi-final, the Champions League, they don't have that swagger. You know, they don't have that, you know, you're not going to beat us. we're going to steamroll you. And I think that's the biggest worry at the moment. But, you know, they've got to get together and go.
27:07Semi-final to Champions League and three points clear with four games to go is some going for a phenomenal, you know, fair play to them. Yes, but it's because of where they were, isn't it? That everyone's getting a little bit, well, very, very tense. They've done it three years on the trot. That's the problem. And he thinks, of course, it could have been easier because he is, as you heard, is convinced that Nick Pope should have been sent off for this incident for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. And, Merce, we heard your argument as well. And the VAR had another look at it, and they were of the view that the Newcastle defender there is going to stop Jokeres having a shot on goal.
27:44But Jokeres, as I said to Mikel, if you watch now, he stops. And that's why. He stops, but he's trying to get round him, but he can't, can he? Yeah, but he gives up because he thinks that Pope's going to get the ball. And then he stops, and then he misses it, and he goes, I'm going to go now. And then he pulls him down. But I don't personally think, I don't think that's a stone wall sending off, in my opinion. It wouldn't have surprised me one bit if he'd have sent him off. I think I can see why, you know, Malik Chow has gone, he's sort of covering ground, but he stops himself. Don't get me wrong, he's extremely quick, but you can't judge it on how quick somebody is.
28:16It's just what's going to happen with the action. But I can see why, if he'd have sent him off, I don't think there'd have been too many complaints. But it's not a clear and obvious opportunity. He's got a lot to do. He's not going to get there and then just roll it into the net. There's a lot to do. You know, he's got to beat the defender. The question is, is the defender getting there first? I don't think he is. They both stop. They both stop. I don't know. I think that's the problem there. He has to stop Paul because he's getting fouled there. Well, and then he gets sent off then when he does that, if he runs quickly.
28:44But he doesn't. He goes and he stops. It's done now. I mean, yeah, I didn't see... I didn't think it was Stonewall, in my opinion. There was a lot to do. The ball's out. It's a long way into the thing. He's not going to wait it and roll it in from 30, 40 yards on the right-hand side. So for me, it wasn't clear and obvious. It would have been a much louder and obvious opportunity. A louder and longer debate had Newcastle actually got back into the game. Then I would have said send him out. Then you would have said absolutely a red card. But 1-0, it finished to Arsenal. And as Mikel Arteta said himself to us live just a couple of moments ago, one down, four to go.
29:23More to come from us here.
29:54We'll be right back. Head to nowtv.com to check out the latest packages.
30:11Arsenal have gone three points clear of Manchester City at the top in this titanic title tussle, which looks like it might well go down to the wire. Who has the nerve? who has the firepower to potentially win their final five matches. Well, now it's a case of one down, four to go for Arsenal, thanks to a very Eze strike from outside the box, which won it from the short corner routine. What else was good about Arsenal today? Keeping a clean sheet. I think that was it. I didn't think the play was great, but it didn't have to be. They just had to win football match. And yeah, defended very well. I can't remember Raya bar that save where it moved.
30:55Well done, brilliant. Hello, nice to meet you. Good to see you. Congratulations. Zabiri Eze has joined us. The goal scorer, the match winner. First of all, I have to ask you how you are. Yeah, I'm all right. I'm all right. I'm all good. Come on. I'm good. I'm good. He said he's all right, Dave. Leave him alone. Why did you come off then? Because you were playing very well. Just precaution. Just didn't want to do anything. So, yeah, I'll be okay. Okay. So we were talking with Mikel and he was wearing a little bit of frustration about how hard it was at times for the team. What was it like for you out there?
31:32Yes, it's tough. You're playing against top teams and top players, so it's always going to be difficult. You're always going to find different challenges. But we done what we needed to do today, get three points and the boys gave everything, which was everything today. We'd love to know about the set piece routine. Because you scored a short corner against Newcastle earlier in the season at St James' Park. In fact, the only previous goal that had been scored from the short corner. Is this plan all about getting you free on the edge of the box? Yeah, whenever we play short, we were looking for an advantage.
32:05Each team sets up different to defend it. But yeah, I just found space on the edge of the box and if it came to me, I'll have time to shoot like I did in the opportunity before. How important is you just got to stay calm in that and not obviously slash it? You just seem to get a really good connection. You took the one before on your left foot and making up the angle so you can then take this one with your preferred right foot. Yeah, these are little adjustments that you have to make in the moment. I just knew that if the ball came to me at that pace, then I knew I could shoot and calm enough to take it.
32:34So thank God for that one. Did you know it was as soon as you hit it? Because it seems like you're going. Kind of, kind of, kind of, kind of. How is it playing? Because you don't play too many times, probably because of injuries to you or Odegaard, but playing together with him, how do you find it? It's beautiful. He's a special player and he's always looking to find players in their pockets. He's so creative and these are the types of players you want to play with. It makes you better, puts you in better positions. So, yeah, I enjoy it a lot. You've got some important goals this year. Is that the best one?
33:06The best one? I don't know. The volley. I like the volley a few weeks ago. The volley is probably better. But that's an important goal for us today. We need the points today and it's put us in good stead. You know, you obviously hear pundits, everybody talking about handling pressure. I don't hear pundits. People just talking about handling the pressure, you know, and then the crowd and the anxiety. How hard is that to deal with when you're actually out there and you're trying to hang on to a 1-0 lead? Because every wheel, you've just got to do it, you've got to deal with it. But how difficult is it when you're in that dressing room preparing for those kind of moments?
33:40Honestly, I feel like the pressure that we put on ourselves is so much more than what's coming from outside. like we're not too interested are you putting too much pressure on yourselves then I wouldn't say so I say it's the necessary pressure to win you know what's at stake you know what's in front of you and we've got an opportunity to do something incredible and it's it's not it's not negative this is a beautiful beautiful position that we're in and to be able to achieve something that a club hasn't achieved in how long so this ain't this ain't this ain't negative for me this ain't negative for me how have you found it coming from Crystal Palace where you know great club Crystal Palace don't get me wrong but here it's like must win it don't matter how you win or what you've got to win and if you don't win you're in big trouble sort of thing and the way you play and I love the way you play you play with that with that swagger and that I'm not arrogant but it's just cool do you know what I mean like you're playing on the beach how have you found bringing that to Arsenal where it's like win win win for me I feel the same football is football wherever you're playing and of course you play to win you play to achieve um but i don't feel like it's do or die i play football because i love playing football and i do everything i can to win a game and if i can do it i do it if i can't i can't and i don't take in the the noise from everyone else because it's honestly you you guys you've you've had your time you've done incredible things we give anything to have our time It has to be in your position.
35:14Exactly. So it's like, now it's your turn. So that's my mentality. I just enjoyed the opportunity that I have in front of me. Do you actually watch the games when, you know, Manchester City are playing or? Yeah, because I love football as well. Do you actually listen to what the pundits are saying before the games and after the games? Before the game and after? Yeah, yeah. Do you listen to the pundits? If I'm honest, no. Why not? Because we talk nonsense. Because you guys talk a lot.
35:43I know and I don't blame you I don't blame you but for me it's just I know what is good for me Be honest right that's a great goal today how many times will you watch that later? Yeah if it comes up I will try to spend most of the time with my family enjoying that to be honest But you would also acknowledge that this was really important today after last week against Manchester City Yeah definitely we wanted to bounce back As I said, it's a race to the finish line now, so we're going to need three points every single game. And that's the level that we've set ourselves. Jamie's actually got something.
36:20We've got a player of the match award. Who's it for? Well, he doesn't like pundits, so can you give us a second right, please? Congratulations. Thank you very much. Great moment. I appreciate it. Thank you very much, guys. Thank you. Thank you very much. Well done. Wish you all the best for the rest of the night. Well done, my man. Viri Eze, who is the match winner, the player of the match, and the goal scorer as well. And do you know, when we were talking to him, you've still got pockets of fans in the hospitality shouting down, I love you, love you, Eze. Could he be the guy, Jamie? Could he be the guy for Arsenal?
36:54Well, he is the guy. He's the guy today. Yes, absolutely, because he plays, like Paul says, it's not an arrogance, it's just a confidence, and he's taking it upon his shoulders to make things happen. I've always been a big fan of him. Crystal Palace, when he was there, I used to do his games and I used to obviously watch him and think, okay, can you get to that next level? Can you affect big games? He obviously did that at moments for Crystal Palace and then he's had his opportunity here. And like Paul says, he's such a cool guy. He's a cool dude. He's a great footballer. He's such a personality as well.
37:25And he must just breed that sort of, that calm to teammates around him. And Paul, you sort of said to him, you know, he's been in and out of the team because of injuries. and availability and sometimes selection. Do you think he has to play now? Oh, he has to play every game. Every game that he's fit, him and Odegaard and Saka, when he's fit, will have to be on the pitch. They've got to win football matches. When you need to win football matches, you've got to put your best, best players on the pitch. You know, there's a saying, when it ain't going too well, just go back to your best players. Some of them might not be playing to their standard, but they will produce.
37:58And he produced today, and next week it might be Odegaard or it might be Saka. but that could be one of the most important goals he ever scores in his career, in my opinion. With him in the team, and then obviously you're sacrificing a little bit of skill rather than speed. Because if you weren't with Martinelli on that left-hand side, because you're obviously going with a three in midfield with Odegaard as a sort of the number 10, and then if you're going to play Saka, because if Saka's fit, he plays on that right-hand side. And then you're going to ask him to come and play in those little pockets.
38:29But you haven't then got that outlet, especially if you've got Jokeres. so you haven't really got that pace. So what you have to sacrifice is that skill, ability, staying on the ball. So that's why it's vitally important that he does have those moments, you know, and it was a key moment today because he is such a, it feels like now, especially with Paul was that kind of player. Paul would drift into the game and make things happen and take the responsibility and that's what he has to do now. It feels like that. You know, Bakayo Saka coming back to fitness is going to be key from a really important time because he hasn't been the Bakayo Saka of the last few years.
38:59but having him back and I felt a little bit of sharpness about him that little rest might have done him good but it does feel like Eze is going to be the man and I just asked the question to at the top there about how he was because Mikel Arteta said to us he might have lost two and he took Eze off and he took Arteta off as well um sorry he took uh Havertz off as well and Kai Havertz actually was just walking out here and chatting with people very freely and look quite relaxed and we're not doctors we're not doctors but who knows whether they have been lost to him or indeed um here he was look or indeed they will be fine maybe for Madrid because they still got a game midweek and then another big game next week then another big game the following midweek so they have to manage their their moments as well if if there was going to be any concern Paul would it be that it could you know ultimately it could come down to goal difference and you have not got a team here in Arsenal who are creating freely or scoring freely right now.
40:00Yeah, but the main thing is to keep on winning football matches first. I thought the most important thing I said before, win the next two games, even if you win them 1-0 against Newcastle and Fulham, go six points clear. You know, Everton's a difficult game, Bournemouth difficult game. Brentford don't let in too many goals. And then you get put through the West Ham game if you can, and then the shackles come off Burnley and Palace and then it's a free-for-all. Stay in the race until the last two. And then it's a David Platt in San Marino. You're running to get the ball out of the net. This is the breakdown of Arsenal's goals so far this season with Jokeres at the top.
40:37But who are you going with when it comes to the crunch? Who are you actually going with? Odegaard is probably a certainty, isn't he, now in this midfield at the bottom there. For me, it is. I think with Odegaard and Eze in the team, it was better when with Havertz, because There was a phase in the game where there was a little dummy by, I think it was Odegaard, and Havertz tried to flick it round the corner. And they have that brain. If you tune into the same, you know what I mean? They're on FM, do you know what I mean? You bring Jukka Rez in and it's Radio Luxembourg sort of thing. You're losing a lot of our younger viewers.
41:10You know the wavelength. You know when you play, you want to flick it round the corner. Some players don't want to come here. He's looking for it there. But he will still play a big part in it, Jukka Rez. For me, he plays in Europe on Tuesday night because he'll hold the ball up. They'll be under pressure, Arsenal. It'll be a difficult game in Madrid. So then that's when you need Jucares just to get you a throw on down the touchline. He runs after lost courses. The biggest time that the whole crowd lifted today was when he cleared the ball from a corner. Jucares, yes. Yeah, and he chased it down here and won it back and it lifted everybody.
41:42Then it went back to the goalie again after that. I mean, we've got Arsenal to attack. The moment of the game, and we were stood next to each other watching it, when he was going down this left-hand side behind us, and all he has to do is just caress that into, I think you've got Odegaard and Saka running onto it, probably go 2-0 and everything's calm. They're the big moments. That's when the moments when you've got to just have that bit of calmness and quality, and he just doesn't at the time possess that. But they have got over the line tonight. One down, four to go, and now they head off to play Madrid, Atletico Madrid, in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.
42:14so when we come back we are going to be turning our attention to Newcastle United because in the in the midst of this we shouldn't forget this story either because they're on an awful run they're worst under Eddie Howe and we'll get his thoughts next

43:13Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game. What a chance for Ian Bissett. That goes in at the end and it's a very different story and a very different narrative of the back of this game as well. But another defeat for Newcastle and for Eddie Howe, talking to Patrick Davison. Eddie, obviously in terms of result the bad run continues but in terms of performance was there a lot to like about that? Did you recognise your team out there today? Yeah, I think we did I think it was our best defensive performance for a long, long time I think we looked solid today we looked good from a defensive viewpoint there were some good bits with the ball as well during both halves we didn't create enough and when we did create the couple of moments that came along we didn't take them and they took theirs from distance from the corner.
44:13So it's another frustrating defeat for us. It was a much better performance overall. What was better today? What did you see today that maybe you hadn't seen for a week or two, maybe longer? I thought we saw defensive resilience, a lot of blocked shots. I thought we didn't have the feeling or the look of a team that was going to concede today, whereas I think in recent weeks we have. I thought there were some good individual performances within that the team structure was good so I think there was a lot better in that respect off the ball I think it's as I say our best performance in a while but we've got to try and put it together and losing games isn't good enough Yeah and I guess the downside of being more solid is maybe in your team selection you have to sacrifice a bit of that creativity so getting both, getting that balance is really difficult Yeah we didn't necessarily try to do that from the team selection I mean I think that there's still enough attacking players on the pitch to do more than we did.
45:04I think we had a lot of ball to maybe express ourselves more. A lot of crosses from deep areas that didn't really trouble them. But in saying that, there were a couple of big moments. Will Asula's right at the start of the game where he doesn't make contact. We set towards the end. What was his chance? He's probably the big one. Dan's header, back post. There was enough for us and a lot of set plays for us as well. Nothing dropped. We're in that moment where we're finding ways to lose games even when we look stronger. So we've got to be resilient and find a way. Anything you could have done about that short corner?
45:35I guess it comes as a surprise, but it's a high-quality moment as well. Yeah, we feel there is something we could have done. We got our structure slightly wrong in saying that. It's an unbelievable finish. And yeah, of course, the short corners weren't something we necessarily expected, although it's something we always prepare for. So the corner you're looking to turn, you haven't got the result today. Maybe you have got the performance. How close are you to rounding that corner? Well, I think closer than we have been because today's a big step forward. Now we need to make sure that's not just attributed to the fact it was Arsenal away from home and obviously the players hyper alert to make sure we perform.
46:15We've got to make sure we have that mindset in every game. But we have to take the positives. We have to take the step forward in terms of performance and know that that will ultimately change results. And I believe next week you have a meeting of the leadership and ownership of the club. Is that also a really important moment? Because obviously you want to sort of renew it. You want to go again next season. But also you don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. This is a group and a manager that have taken the club to great places in the last few years. Yeah, I mean, these are things that we always have every year.
46:48Obviously, this one will be slightly harder for me, I'm sure. But it'll be good to meet with the owners and discuss the future. Thank you, Eddie. Thank you. Thank you. Bye, Fred. Well, it will be harder off the back of this run of results, which, as we have been saying, has been the worst under Eddie Howe because it's four on the bounce. But going further back, it's nine of the last 12 in which they have lost, which includes a home derby defeat as well, just to make it extra sore. And really, I suppose Newcastle fans and Eddie Howe was saying as well after the international break that this was a chance for a reset.
47:23Final seven games of the season. and let's see if we can win as many of those as possible to push on for Europe. That was what was, you know, still available to them, Jamie, but they've gone on lost four on the bounce instead. So where are you on Eddie Howe right now? I think Eddie has done enough to decide whatever he wants at the club. I think there's a genuine love for him up there. I think the fans will be disappointed with the season, understandably, after they're 14th in the league, they'll be expected a lot more. When you look at what they've done previously, you know, they started off and Eddie come in and just stabilised the club, did a brilliant job.
47:55Then they go fourth and then seventh, and you think you're really starting to build something to fifth. Two seasons of Champions League football, Jamie, and their first domestic trophy starting to do up for 70 years as well. Absolutely. So that's why I'm saying he deserves the opportunity and the luxury of, OK, deciding what happens. Now, they might come to a point where at the end of the season, Eddie thinks I've maybe taken this group as far as I can. I looked at that squad today and the starting team, and you've got, you know, Volta Marder doesn't start. He was a big money signing. Alanga doesn't start, big money signing.
48:24in Visser. So he's obviously something not right with the recruitment. However, that's worked out because for the money they've spent for those players not to be starting isn't good enough. And the performances haven't been acceptable. And I looked at Newcastle over the years. The thing I've always admired about Eddie's side is there's an energy desire to win games. They get after teams, make it difficult. At times today, they were plodding. They were sitting back in shape, which is absolutely fine. But they really miss that energy. And that's maybe going to change, I think, in the future. And if it doesn't, that doesn't represent an Eddie Howe team.
48:55Do you think he needs to finish the season well? Four games to go, Paul. Jamie says it should be Eddie Howe's decision, but is there a danger that if they don't, that decision might be taken out of his hands? It shouldn't be. It shouldn't be. And I won a trophy for the first time since probably I've been born. 70 years? Yeah. Just about. The year before. So, yeah, you've got, you know, the Izak situation. Then they go and buy Volta Marder and Wissler, who haven't fulfilled or got anywhere near what they did at their clubs last season. They had the best free about, in my opinion, in midfield with Bruno, Tonali and Joel Linton.
49:30What a free. What a free. How many times have they played together in that 12 games? Probably none. Just as Bruno comes back. Exactly. And you've got to take all that consideration. I'm a big fan of Eddie Al. I mean, if Eddie Al leaves Newcastle, they'll be queuing up around the corner for him. So that tells you everything. Be careful, Newcastle. Chelsea will take him tomorrow morning you'd like to think so wouldn't you? In my opinion take him all day long I mean we're talking about him being the next England manager yeah 100 % Manchester United as I say everybody will be queuing up to take Eddie Howe he's a top manager he's just had injuries and with the Isaac thing at the end of the season Isaac was a big player for them you know he ripped the Arsenal to shreds in the semi-final last year when they went on and won it he's a top player These two have come in.
50:17No disrespect to them. They just haven't fulfilled it yet. By the way, I haven't had an update yet on the Optus Swingometer. I don't know if we've got one. We could do this live right now with a minute to go on the programme. Just put everyone completely on the back foot in the gallery. Who wins the title for you from here, given that Arsenal have managed to respond to what happened at City last week with the victory? If Arsenal win next week against Fulham at home, Arsenal will win the league. You think so? Yeah, I do. Yeah, I do. I've said it all season. They'll win it. He's getting tight. But I think if they can go six points clear, Everton away, six points behind.
50:52Difficult game. The up to swing-o-meter, Jamie. Jamie, I've got the big news. Drum roll. 72 % Arsenal to win the league. Yeah, but that's from Olivia. She's a big Arsenal fan. I know you're in there, Olivia. So, yeah, I think it's 50-50. I genuinely believe that. It's 72%. I'm just... Anything can happen. we might get down to a situation with goal difference and we see the pressure. I even see, I watched Man City against Burnley on Tuesday night. There was a little bit of pressure when you watched Manchester City's performance. So it changes. Mercer's done it. He knows how to win it. And anything could still happen.
51:27We've got them one of the most incredible seasons in terms of the relegation and who's going to win the Premier League. So we've got a lot to look forward to. Wouldn't they just love to come here though, Arsenal fans, and be able to relax and enjoy a performance, maybe with a free scoring side. Maybe that happens against Fulham next week. I wouldn't hold your breath. trying to find more positivity. They have won. That's all that matters, as Paul's been saying all night. Paul, thank you very much. Jamie, thank you as well for your time. And yeah, Arsenal have got the job done here this evening at an empty now.
