In short
The episode covers Manchester United’s 5-2 comeback win over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, focusing on how Bruno Fernandes’ hat-trick (three goals in 28 minutes) swung the match after Ipswich led early. Topic includes Ipswich’s strong first half, key turning points (a slip leading to an early United goal; a contentious handball/VAR decision involving Harry Maguire that resulted in an own goal; a penalty conceded), and United’s second-half attacking surge. Notable examples cited: Fernandes’ left-foot finish after the slip; the pre-half-time equaliser; Fernandes’ penalty; and his assist for Brian “Bermot” (B. Ubramo) in the fifth goal.

0:30While Bruno Fernandes was beautiful and Manchester United are on the board after a stumble on day one, a stabilising, in his case, stellar start at Old Trafford. his hat-trick alongside a goal for Brian and Bermot and an unlucky moment for Jacob Greaves took Manchester United in the end to five albeit after a jolting early half hour for Michael Carrick who saw a really purposeful progressive Ipswich team take the lead through Leif Davis and for quite a while until his misadventure and misfortune for quite a while to remain competitive against the Manchester United side which in the end, in the end, Gary, pulled away.
1:17Gary Neville:Yeah, in fact, I think in the end, from a point of view of the scoreline, but for Michael Carrick, I'm sure he'll look at all of the game and he'll be proud of a lot of the great attacking football in the second half. I think he'll want improvements in the defensive part in the first half of the game where Ipswich were a real threat. And usually when a promoted team from the Championship gets beat five, you'd all never be thinking, well, they're going to be in trouble this season, but I actually think the opposite of Ipswich. I'm more confident in them today than I was before the game and that's unusual, I've been seeing the scoreline but a couple of goals went against them that were a little bit unfortunate and that then just left them asking a lot, needing a lot of problems with Manchester United basically, Bruno Fernandes caused most of those problems Thank you Gary, there you go Kelly it was a rattling good watch in the rain and Manchester United won it by five goals to two Peter and Gary, thank you very much Ashley Young, we do need to talk about Bruno because Fernandes, as he has been so many times, the absolute key for Manchester United.
2:18His third half-trick for the club, his first in the Premier League for five years, and it all came in 28 minutes. He was fantastic. He's the one that gets many tickets. He's been that player that, you know, there's a reason why he's been voted player of the year by his fellow professionals and his performances like this. We've seen it time and time again, but he was the one that, he was the driving force for Manchester United. especially in the second half, to get a hat-trick, to get an assist. The way he played, it was just phenomenal. I think he brings other players around him up to his level as well.
2:53I think Man United showed that they weren't messing about in the second half. Yeah, they wanted a reaction today. Did they get it in terms of the overall performance? Because the scoreline at 5-2 is really impressive. As Gary was saying there as he was sort of wrapping up, maybe it wasn't a 5-2 scoreline kind of game, or there wasn't that big a difference between the sides? No, I don't think so. And I think Ipswich can find themselves unlucky, especially in the first half, the way that they performed. I think, you know, many nights scoring at the time they did. I was saying at half-time, you know, the stretch then will help the team in the second half and, you know, will get the goals coming in.
3:30If the players start running in behind, you saw Marcus Rashford, you saw Brian Ubramo, you saw Cunha, everybody, everybody had a fantastic game. and you can still there's a real togetherness. Everybody knows their jobs, everyone knows what they need to be doing. I think Michael Carrick's got them saying, listen, we're going to work, but at times we're going to play football and play in a way that the players like. I think you see that, the smiles you see after the game. Talking about managers who have everybody knowing exactly what they're doing, that's what Gary O 'Neill's got at Ipswich to success last week.
4:01Disappointment today, but can they take some satisfaction from that performance? Gary O 'Neill was saying he's more confident now that they're going to be more than good enough to stay in the Premier League this season? Yeah, I think so. I think certainly that first-half performance, I think, where they had three or four really good chances, scored a really good goal as well. I think there'll be a lot of positive thoughts from Gary O 'Neill. Second-half, yeah, maybe a little bit of capitulation. A few decisions went against them, the handball of Harry Maguire, things like that, the Jacob Greaves, obviously the penalty.
4:28But I think you can. You come to a place like Manchester United, you expect a reaction. You know they're going to come out all guns blazing. In the first half, you managed to contain that. But second-half, Bruno Fernandes, in particular was absolutely outstanding. His goals, the assists, his vision, everything he did in that second half was positive and that's why Man United ran out outright winners 5-2. We'll continue to talk much more about this game, but overall on Super Sunday, there have been 17 goals today. Seven of them, of course, at Old Trafford and seven of them at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea beat Brighton by four goals to three.
4:59Cole Palmer on the score sheet and this, as it did in their opening game, proved to be the winning goal come the full-time whistle. At Elland Road, it finished Leeds 1, Brentford 1. They went ahead, Brentford, through Sharder. Kevin Sharder, every time he scored, Brentford have never lost the game. That continued, even though Dominic Calvert-Lewin managed to get the equaliser late on for Leeds United. And just the one goal in it at the Stadium of Light, where Sunderland got their first win of this Premier League campaign. The goal came eventually from Wilson Isidor, who just missed a chance just before this, but made sure of the three points with that strike.
5:50Manchester United, five two winners at home to Ipswich, 33 shots, 12 of which one target is more than any other team so far this season. And having been the lowest in terms of duels won on the opening weekend, 65 % of Jules 1 is the highest from this round of matches this week and an XG of 4.5 compared to 2 for Ipswich. So pretty much playing out as expected in terms of the chances. Bruno Fernandes at the heart of everything. He got a hat-trick in this game within 28 minutes. Harry Maguire almost on the score sheet and both of them are with Pien Mullenstein. Bruno Harry, congratulations. That must feel like a really big win, first win on your belts this season.
6:36No, obviously it was massive for us. We knew we lost three points last week, so it was all about to get three points, give a good performance to our fans. First game at home, they've been waiting long for this, so we wanted to... It's not make up for last week because you can't get six points in this game, but we wanted to start the game on the front foot, be strong. I think we were in control of the game, even if we considered the goal, and then second off we were very, very good. It felt like a real statement win today. What do you think the team did particularly well? Well, I think we started the game really well and the goal knocked us back a lot.
7:10I must say the defeat last week was tough to take and when you lose at this club there's a load of noise and it feels like you're in a crisis again after one game. But no, I think when they scored the first goal, I think that was five, ten minutes after that, I think we lost control of the game. We spoke about it at half-time, we come out and got control again and the second half. We know that we can score goals in any moment and we've proved that we could have scored many more. How important was that equaliser that you managed to score just before half-time to keep that belief going? I think scoring before the half-time is always important, even if it's to get on top of the game or to draw the game, because it gives you a little bit of belief that not everything you were doing was wrong.
7:53And I think, as Sage said, we were in control of the game. We lost the control for five, ten minutes after the goal we conceded, but then we got back on track. And I think in the second half, after some adjustments, we were very good. You played your part in that second goal. There was a bit of a debate about whether it was your goal, whether it was going to be handball. What was your view on it? No, I actually hadn't seen it back, so I can't really comment. I know it was tight. It wasn't handball on purpose, for sure. I don't know if it brushed my fingers. But I actually dragged the shot a little bit wide, so I think it's going to go down as an own goal, unfortunately.
8:23So probably that's the reason why it counted, because I think if it was my goal, I think they disallow it. I think that's the rules nowadays. But no, thankfully, it was on our side today and I think we deserve the win and we deserve that little bit of luck. Hat-trick for you, Bruno. You're third now for Manchester United. Just how good does it feel to do that? No, score goals. It's the best feeling in football, obviously. And then doing a hat-trick in the game at home with our fans, it's something amazing that I'm very proud of. but the main thing is that I need to score goals to help the team to win games.
8:56Today I did that and I hope that I can do much more and help my teammates score goals too. How important does a result like this feel, especially after what happened at the start of the weekend, the opening weekend, to be able to respond like you did today? Yeah, it's massive. I think, like I said, I think last week was disappointing. We've prepared all pre-season to go and win the game against Hull and unfortunately we got done by two set players and we couldn't respond. so we knew today was massive in front of our fans it's been a long time since we've been at Old Trafford so we look forward to playing here and thankfully we managed to get three points and listen, it's three points, we move on we've got a long season ahead and we'll be focused for the next one Harry, will you please do the honours?
9:35You are the man of the match Congratulations, another honour Thank you very much Congratulations, thanks guys See you soon Yeah, Harry Maguire hasn't seen that own goal yet but he has been very briefed on the handball loss So he's right across that one. We'll look at that in just a second. And Bruno Fernandes, obviously, with the hat-trick. The opening goal, the chance came about from a touch of good fortune with a slip. However, the move from then on and the finish from Fernandes was impressive. Yeah, it was. You know, it's unfortunate for Nunes here when he gets the ball, he slips over. But, you know, as Bentley said, couldn't you?
10:11I thought he was going to carry on going. But, you know, he sees the run from Bruno Fernandes. And Bruno Fernandes has got one thought on his mind. take a touch out in front of me and hit it as hard as I can in my left foot if it's on target I've got a chance of scoring it was a fantastic goal to get Man United back into the game and then go into half time that goal there was massive, getting the goal before half time to then come out in the second half and produce a performance in what they did, it was just a blime Ok, so here's the goal that Harry Maguire hasn't seen back yet, there is a question as to whether it's deliberate handball, that's what we're looking at from Harry Maguire here when he receives the ball.
10:48And then he has the shot, which is deflected in. It was going wide, therefore it goes down as an own goal by Jacob Greaves. So that's the handball. You can argue the toss as to whether that's accidental or deliberate. He will say that it's a natural body position and therefore is accidental. And then there's the deflection from Jacob Greaves, which makes it the own goal. So that part is not in doubt. Any question mark as to whether that's accidental or deliberate? I mean, listen, he's in a sense of accidental. I understand that he's a challenger with Chuba Akpong and his arms are up there, almost trying to protect himself.
11:23And listen, I understand the rules of the game and obviously it's accidental. And then if he directly scores it, it gets ruled out. But I still think he directly impacts the goal. By having the shot at goal, yes, he drags it and gets it wrong. So it used to be the case that any handball by an attacking player would have meant that the goal was ruled out. However, that has been changed. So now this is what Match Centre have said. this is what has been confirmed by VAR. Harry Maguire wasn't the immediate goal scorer. It was an accidental handball, so it's an own goal, and therefore the accidental handball is not punishable.
11:56So they recommend, they said, that you award the goal. So this is the laws of the game, as spelled out by IFAB. It's an offense if a player scores in the opponent's goal directly from their hand or arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper. So that wasn't the case because it wasn't direct from Harry Maguire. immediately after the ball has touched their hand or arm, even if accidental. That wasn't the case from Harry Maguire. And then this is where it is pertinent. Following an accidental handball by an attacker, if the ball is clearly moving wide of the goal but is touched or played by a defending player and a clear own goal occurs, the goal should be awarded.
12:34So that's the direct interpretation. And that's the direct advice on particularly this situation. if we're saying that Harry Maguire's handball is accidental? Well, I think it's, you know, it could go either way. Of course, Harry Maguire's arms are up, they're across his chest. Like Bennington said, he's protected himself from, you know, whether it's going to be a tube wrap on his foot or whatnot. You know, he's got away with it. Like I said, you could feel aggrieved if you get it against her. You could feel aggrieved if, you know, it works in your favour. it's one of them things that it's a difficult one it's hard but they've got a way of it they've got the goal it's one of those rules where I understand it because obviously it's there in black and white you can see it but it still doesn't feel right because Harry Maguire directly impacts what happens the ball ends up in the back of the net at a crucial time for Ipswich and they get the awarding of the goal and I understand the rules but if it hits your hand with that player and he's still the one who kind of directly impacts it yeah still not a nice one to take but he will argue if your hands are here and you're protecting your chest it's accidental, where else are they meant to go in that situation?
13:43But you're right, it was a pivotal goal in the match because it's the one that gave Manchester United the lead for the first time and at that point Manchester United just ran away with it and it was the Bruno Fernandes show. It was, yeah, Bruno Fernandes, he turned up. This from Cope Meno was fantastic, he releases Kunja, Kunja takes a great touch and unfortunately Jacob Reeves, he takes him out. An own goal and then a penalty conceded. Of course. It was a tough day for him. But like I said, the pass through from Kobe was absolutely fantastic. And, you know, Kunio does, he's smart here as a striker.
14:20He gets the touch and he sees the challenge come in. Bruno Fernandes steps up to take the penalty. And as cool as he always is, you know, with a little stutter, watch the goalkeeper move and, you know, he slots it away. I mean, it was hard for Epswich maybe not to wobble at this point. having had so much of the game in the first half, having been really organised and really well-disciplined, having taken the lead, and then Rony were level at the break to then find themselves 3-1 down and then 4. Yeah, as quickly as that, I mean, it's quite a scrappy goal, but again, this touch from Bruno Fernandes here, he reacts really well, and it's all in one movement.
14:57He takes it within step and then just rolled it into the far corner. It's a lovely finish, lovely first touch there, and then just kind of rolls it into the far corner. And in that period there, Manchester United were absolutely rampant. Just the way when it takes the deflection when it comes through and the way that Fernandes adjusts his feet down to take that shot. It's incredible because even the spin, if you look at the spin on the ball, that could have gone anywhere. But because of how good he is and obviously the confidence is flowing, he's just scored a penalty, scored that great goal in the first half.
15:21His touch is absolutely perfect. And all in one movement, he touches out of his feet, rolls it into the far corner and effectively the game's over. He is so important to Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes. And he is something of a, at times, controversial figure from outside the club. certainly not from inside it. But in terms of what he brings to that team, if they don't have Bruno Fernandes out there to have that kind of motivating factor to drive the rest of the team on, it potentially works out differently. Of course it doesn't. Bruno Fernandes is one of them players that, like you say, some people like him, some people don't like him.
15:55Bruno Fernandes brings so much to this football club. He's fantastic on the pitch and he's a winner. He's got that mentality that he wants to be the best. he wants to win. It is huge for this club. If they don't have him, there's going to be a big hole in this team. And, you know, me and Ben, he said, he keeps himself so fit as well. He's always available for his team. And, you know, at times there's been a lot of question marks and throwing his arms up, but he just wants to win. He just wants to get on that pitch and do everything he can. And I think that it showed today that, you know, the attitude that he went about his job with, you know, the character that he did, He galvanised his team.
16:37With the first half, first 30 minutes, 35 minutes, he said there that the goal, they didn't see the goal coming again, which Ipswich had gone, got another goal as well. They were fortunate. But like I say, the way that he performed, you need the players to step up. And when you've got Bruno Fernandes playing like this, it is fantastic for this team. And he was instrumental in the fifth goal as well, in the assist from Bermot. What a pass. because I mean Mbremo's run he runs with real purpose and it's just like please pull it there and Bruno Fernandes puts it in the exact spot he needs it I mean it's a fantastic finish because I'm thinking just nod it past the goalkeeper and put it in the empty net but the pass and I think this is the angle here he just swivels all in one move and just drops it in beyond that Ipswich back line and then Mbremo good run times it to perfection and again Jacob grieves him a bit indifferent afternoon the spin comes off the bar he thinks he's going to clear it and the batsman takes it back over the line and he puts it into the roof of the net but for Mbremo there the run the pass from Bruno Fernandes, absolutely superb.
17:35I think it's the awareness that Bruno Fernandes shows on the pass. You know, he sees Brian Umbermo running through before I think anybody else sees. He's just taken one look. He knows he's going to make that run. I think that was something that was said at half-time, that they need to get players running in behind them. You know, you see, he just knows that Brian's going to be there and he just puts it, you know, right on his path and it's a fantastic finish. I was going to ask whether Brian Umbermo does that if it's still 1-1. But then I think probably he's the type of player who would try something like that.
18:05They didn't do it often enough in the first half. Me and Ashley said that. We said about how many times you're going to run in behind because I thought Ipsos' back line was quite high. But in that moment there when, obviously, again, the confidence is flowing, that pass from Bruno Fernandes because Ibrahimov probably knows. And do you know what I'm saying? If Kobi Maynou's probably on the ball, he probably doesn't make that run with that same purpose. But because it's Bruno Fernandes with the range of passing he's got and the vision that he's got, as soon as it's anywhere near Bruno, he just makes the run and it's a fantastic pass.
18:29There have been some question marks as to why Manchester United haven't spent on defence in this transfer window. But Gary Neville joined us before the game and was talking through the transfer policy and outlined the money that was spent on the forward line. The money now has been spent on midfield and maybe defence is next in line. Did we see the benefit of what has been spent so far in trying to build this Manchester United squad? Yeah, I think you do. You look at the front line of what they performed today. Marcus Rashford coming back into the team. I think there's going to be a lot of hype and talk around him being back.
19:02Probably some fans wouldn't have wanted him to come back. But his performance today, he was brilliant as well. You've got Kunja, you had Brian Bromo getting on the score sheet. It's them connections. When you build up them connections in training and you can go and do that in the games, it is fantastic. Of course, we spoke about the defence and there is worries about them. I'm sure there's going to be, if Caras can, and get a few more bodies in through the door to bolster the squad. Because like I said, they've got Champions League football this season. It's going to be tough. It's going to be hard.
19:32But if you've got a front line that is producing what they produced today, and they can do that all season, stay injury-free, then you won't be worried too much about the back line. Marcus Rashford, you mentioned there, making his first Manchester United start since December 2024. He's been off in Barcelona. He comes back to Old Trafford. Michael Carrick makes sure that he knows that he's part of his plans at Manchester United. Did he justify his inclusion today? Absolutely. I thought he looked really sharp. I mean, the only thing that would have topped it off would have been a goal. But I thought he looked really, really good.
20:03He was going past. He was positive. I mean, he had run incredible volley back across the goal, which Embroen will probably should score from as well. So I think looking back at his overall performance, he'd probably say to himself, yeah. But I still think there's more levels to him. I think he's that good of a player that when he's in red-hot form, you go back to that 22 season where he scored the 30 goals, he was unplayable. If Marcus Rashford could get back to anywhere near that, that's going to be like a new sign-up for Manchester United because I believe he makes Manchester United stronger.
20:27If he plays like he did today, Manchester United could go very far this season. Plenty of optimism then around Manchester United after that 5-2 win. An impressive scoreline against Ipswich, but plenty to admire in that Ipswich performance, particularly in the first half of the game. We'll get the thoughts of Gary O 'Neill and Ipswich Reaction next.

21:40Let's get the thought of Gary O 'Neill. He's with Keen Mullenstein. Gary, there were lots of elements to that game, but on reflection, what are your thoughts? really unlucky to be 2-1 down like really unlucky two of the most unlucky goals you'll ever see but then not good enough from that moment to get back a hold of it like emotional discipline ended up stepping out on things leaving big spaces and got punished by a very good side but yeah the two goals to put us 2-1 down were a tough blow and to lose Emi at half time of course could have been very different to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford you need the moments to go in your favour they didn't, the couple that went against us and then we weren't good enough in the end for the last half an hour to sort of get a hold of the game and make it look how it did at the start, we lost control to sort of the momentum, so that's the bit that we'll focus on really is trying to improve that because it can happen, people can slip referees can, or rules can go against you or a deflection There's lots of things that can happen in the game that are beyond your control.
22:47It's then how we respond to that for the last half an hour that we need to get better at. But we were proud of the players. I thought they gave everything. They were arguably the better side for 58, 56 minutes. But we have to improve that last little bit. Is that really the overall feeling on that second goal that it's just the rules really that went against you for that? I think so. It's a complicated rule. Handball if it's the goal scorer. but not if this takes a deflection and the ball was heading off target. I think that's tough to ref to be honest because if it's heading at the post, you know, is that, I mean, if it's close, how's the ref going to be able to tell whether it was going in or not going in from if Maguire's shot was a bit more accurate?
23:29Would it still be disallowed? So yeah, difficult rule to ref but no problem, I'm not here to moan about refs or I'm going to look at our bit, look at how we did so well to start with and then look how we lost our way. and this result is we get no points, which is at Old Trafford. A lot of people are leaving with no points, but we leave with understanding what we need to get better at, some real positives in what we did for the first hour, and we have four days to prepare for another big game against Liverpool, so it doesn't stop. Is that one of the important things now for you, is finding those positives that you just spoke about for that first hour and being able to build on that so early on in this season now?
24:06Yeah, we've got three points from two games, two tough games. So a good start for us. A real good effort here for a long time. Disappointed that we lost our way as much, which we will fix. But it's the Premier League. The lads understand that there are going to be highs and there are going to be lows. As a newly promoted side, it's going to be that. Obviously, we don't want there to be too many lows, but the lads are fine in there. They understand that we had to go. Things didn't go our way. We lost our way a little bit. Let's get on the bus. Let's get ready for Liverpool and see if we can add another three points.
24:40You obviously made that change at half-time you had to make the change, how is he doing? He's okay I think, sort of landed awkwardly so they're hopeful that there's no structural damage, it was just a sore one for him so we're hopeful, it was a big blow obviously to have a slip and a goal, lose your number nine and then a big debate around the handball and the deflection all in the space of ten minutes was a tough one for us but no excuse to lose our way the way we did, we need to do better so let's see what we can do this week, put some work in and then easy game against Liverpool on Friday. Well, I spoke to Leif before and he said there's fire in the bellies now to be able to go out there and get a result against Liverpool, obviously on home soil.

25:18Yeah, we'll always be ready to go again. I don't doubt that. So whether we'd have won today, whether we lost, we'll be ready for Liverpool on Friday. We'll give everything and we're a really good group accepting what comes. So we give our best, we accept today's result, we understand that we need to get better and we'll do the same again against Liverpool. We'll give everything we can and see what we can do. and just finally last couple of days left of this transfer window how happy are you with the squad that you've got are you expecting any more additions yeah we're trying to do a little bit we are but really pleased obviously the club have had a real good go trying to bridge the gap between Championship and Premier League owners have given an awful lot Mark and the recruitment team and everybody's worked their socks off for the manager to change as late as it did as well and not be able to start the recruitment until the new manager was in there was a lot going on this summer at the football club and everyone's given a lot to get us in this position.
26:10You can see that we have quality and we can be a threat. We just need to make sure that we keep picking up points, we keep pushing forward, and let's see what we can do in the next couple of days of the window. Thanks for your time. All the best for Friday. Thank you very much. Good to see you. See you soon. Yeah, they've got until Tuesday, until the transfer window closes, if they want to do more business. 13 players in already,£190 million spent. They're giving it a really good go, Ipswich. And you said at the end of the game, Gary, oh, Gary Neville's joined us, by the way. You said at the end of the game that you feel more confident about Ipswich's chances this season off the back of that performance.
26:43Even though it was a 5-2 scoreline, what made you say that?
26:45Gary Neville:Just the way they played in the first 45-50 minutes. Really well organised, looked like they had quality going forward. I see what he was saying about the fact that, did he say in that part of the game that they lost their way when the second and third goals went in? He said he felt like the first goal was probably unlucky with the slip. The second one, he said maybe the laws of the game went against them a little bit. He's not sure about that one. And then he said after that they maybe lacked a bit of emotional discipline. Do you know what I thought? It may be that, but also it may be because the goals came so quickly, it didn't give him a chance to be able to change it.
27:19Gary Neville:Because I thought that maybe you could see five minutes before that that Manchester United had started to sort of shift through the gears. And they were, you know, Matt Rashford had that one where it had gone across to Mbremo. So I just think that maybe he probably in future, he said he'll reflect upon it. I think he probably would change when he starts to see that game shifting. Because they played 4-4 too effectively with NC. So, and obviously Emerson, the boy up front, and Ackham in the second half, maybe he would have gone to a five earlier. Maybe when they start to see that sort of pressure come in from the big teams, maybe he would shift quicker.
27:48Gary Neville:But the goals came so fast, it maybe caught him by surprise as well. Yeah, it's an interesting point, though, the one about emotional discipline. Because having had a promotion season where pretty much everything kind of goes your way, coming into the Premier League, where you're going to be up against things, you're going to be up against difficult moments more often than not as a promoted side. It's something they're going to have to learn quickly. I think so. I think as Gaz was saying there about the goals coming quickly, I think even individually and collectively, I mean, Jacob Greaves nicks off his goal, his foot and goes in the net for an own goal.
28:16Then he gives the penalty away about a couple of minutes later. So maybe his head was still a bit foggy from what had happened. So, yeah, but again, it's a learning experience. I mean, a lot of these squads were there last time they were in the Premier League. And they have to learn quickly. Another big game on Friday night against Liverpool, which is going to be difficult as well. But I think they definitely showed signs first half that they can certainly cope at this level. I mean, they should have been going in at half time, maybe 3-2 up, 3-1 up, because they created more than enough opportunities.
28:41They just didn't take them. But I thought Gary spoke really well there, because I think he said basically about the emotional part of it as well. But also as well, he was quite clever in what he said, because he's obviously still seething from the handball, which could have gone either way. But again, he will go back to obviously Ipswich and he'll look back at the table and see how they played first half and take huge confidence from that. Yeah, that game against Liverpool live on Sky Sports on Friday night, by the way. And the first goal sort of summed up everything that Ipswich were doing right, particularly that first half an hour.
29:09Yeah, of course it was. They were on the front foot. And you see Fatou here, you know, go past Luke Shaw like, you know, he wasn't there. And then they get bodies in the box. And it's always been a thing that, you know, Leith Davis has always wanted to get in the box. Every time he plays, he's up and down. And, you know, the controlled finish was, it was fantastic. Just, you know, he just controls it there. puts his foot on it and, you know, like I say, it's a great finish. They started so well. That first, you know, 30, 35 minutes, it was them all on top. He likes that run, Beef Davis, doesn't he, Darren?
29:40He does, he really does. I mean, this here, I mean, he's got the jets on because I didn't know he was this quick, powerful. And this is in CISO now, yeah. In CISO, you're going through. I just wonder if you're going to take him maybe an extra touch because he does so well to get in that position. He gets across Luke Shaw. If he could take that extra touch and then Luke Shaw can't touch him at all without bringing him down, but he takes it early and it's a really good save from Lambens. But, I mean, again, I didn't know he was that quick, but I thought first half especially, he was the best player on the pitch.
30:05Yeah, and what does it say about the way that Gary O 'Neill set this Ipswich team up to come and face a Manchester United side? He said before the game, he wasn't quite sure how they were going to line up, particularly off the back of the defeat by Hull City. Well, I think what he capitalised on was the lack of pace at the back line for Manchester United because all of Ipswich's best chances are wide players, getting them behind. I mean, that strike there for Maeda is a fantastic save. and to hill it because it's slightly behind him as well. But, I mean, this one here from Leaf, if he could have it again, could he hit it hard?
30:33Could he really put his foot through, guys?
30:35Gary Neville:Yeah, it's the same. Having just scored as well, you're thinking it's absolutely perfect for him just to do exactly the same thing again. Just doesn't quite get a good contact on it, does he? No, and probably an easier chance than the one that he actually scored. And then Chuba Akpom came on and got his first goal for Ipswich. It was a consolation. and this one made it 5-2 in the absolute driving rain that was tipping down at Old Trafford at the time. So not huge celebrations from him, but an important goal nonetheless. It is for himself personally as well, because it's his first goal of the season.
31:06As a striker, you want to get off the mark. But again, it's all about in CISO. Didn't give up. We saw him do it last week against Sunderland, where he won the ball back and he created a goal, and he does it again there. He takes the right option, and the two-back point he came on. Looked a bit rusty, but that would give him huge confidence. Coming to Old Trafford and getting a golden, obviously, second game of the season. It's massive for them. Well, as well as Ipswich played, Manchester United, particularly in the second half, more than equal to them and went on to win that game by five goals to two.

32:22Manchester United get their first win of the season in the first home game of this Premier League season. Here's Michael Carrick with P Mullen's team. Michael, congratulations. That felt like a real statement win. How proud are you of the team? It was a good win. It was a really good win in the end. I think played some really good football. Obviously in a challenging position to go one down and biggest thing from today really was the mentality of the boys to overcome setbacks. We're going to have them. Every team that ends up being successful has them. It depends how you deal with them and how quickly you deal with them.
32:57We had one last week. We had a little one today. I have to say the way the boys responded and took it on, I think. I was really pleased with that. It's easy to look at the result now and say, what a fantastic performance and some great goals and things. but the mentality and the stubbornness and the belief of the boys today really pleased me. Was it also the fact getting that equaliser before the break, that belief to go back out in the second half and obviously get as many goals as you did then? Yeah, I thought we controlled the game pretty well for the most part. First half, they had one break away from our corner, I think, and got in behind our full-backs a couple of times, which was kind of one-off instances, and then said how to make a save.
33:39so I thought a lot of our play was looking like we were on the way to what we wanted it to look and then second half we put a little bit extra on that and spoke a bit at half-time and the boys took it on really well and second half we were fabulous, I have to say. The goals obviously came in quick succession, but a word on Bruno Fernandes, his third hat-trick now for Manchester United and absolutely just loves scoring the goals, doesn't he? Yeah, we'll take a few more of them as well. Yeah, he showed his quality today, I thought, through the middle of the pitch, particularly Bruno, Uri, Kobe and Matthias who played some really good football for us and we relied on that a bit today the way we played and then Bruno's doing what he's good at he's had a big week and with winning awards and bouncing back from last weekend when we all had to take it and accept defeat and learn from it and come back stronger and we've all did that and Bruno was today three goals fantastic performance Was there a moment in the match that you particularly enjoyed?
34:41I don't think there was one I think there was a lot of positives with the ball without the ball but again for me it's the whole mentality really of dealing with it and being confident enough and believing enough in each other to trust each other to put in that performance and last week was one of those games didn't go for us we accept that today was a lot better When you look at the contrast between the two different results from the opening weekend to now. How much can this give you and build on for what you've got in the next couple of weeks? Yeah, we're not getting carried away. You know, we weren't overly down last week.
35:16Well, we were down, but we didn't kill ourselves and everything wasn't wrong. It was something we can improve on today. There's still things we can get better at. You know, the result was great. We haven't cracked it. There's a long way to go and we'll get ready for next week because it's a different challenge, a tough game going away next week and we'll look forward to that. We saw you managed to make four changes today and you obviously used some of the players off the bench. How important is squad rotation for you at these early stages, especially now playing in Europe too? Yeah, definitely.
35:43Definitely part of that was planned really, going into these first couple of weeks as well to give some players the minutes ready for what's coming ahead. I think that's important. Largely, everyone's been on the pitch pretty much, barring one or two, which I think it's good at this stage to have that. We've got the squad to be able to do that and the boys are ready for it as a season with a lot of games. So I'm looking forward to it. That being said, Chancellor Wendell, still a couple of days left of that. How happy are you with the business so far? Is there still an area as well that you want to strengthen?
36:16I think we've done some fantastic business, I think. I'm sure of, to be honest, with the money that we've spent. I think we've done it very well. So, so far, we're happy. It's obviously, you're always looking for if you can do something else or more or whatever. and making the most of the situation that we have. But at the moment, I think the group's in a good place. Their spirit's good. The connection's there. They're really positive and they want to fight for each other, which is important. Congratulations today, Michael. Thanks for your time. See you after. Take care. Bye. Michael Carrick giving the impression that he's satisfied rather than delighted with that result and that performance.
36:56What did you make of his comments on the way that the team played, the way that the team reacted to what happened on that opening weekend?
37:04Gary Neville:I mean, yeah. I mean, look, first half was a really difficult game and I think the goal was important before half-time, but I thought the second half they were exhilarating. They came out, they really went forward well. All of them played well. Did you expect them to do that from the get-go? I actually expect them to start, like a house on fire, in just the first 20 minutes. I thought that Ipswich would be right up against Ipswich. It did shock me the first 20 minutes of the game, but sometimes that can happen. But the most important thing is that they demonstrated today they're going to score a lot of goals this season.
37:28Gary Neville:They did do that last season. I just think that Embermo, Cunha, Rashford's obviously back now, Bruno, Shesko, Ahmad, they're good players. They've got a really good group of forwards, I'm not mentioning Mason Mount and Dogu in that as well. So I think they've got eight or nine there that can do a really good job. The midfield is yet to be seen, but they've got four players that they've recruited in there, which should give them sort of the base that they want. It's going to be that defence. And I think Michael, I think if he was being ruthless and hard in the interview and being probably more honest, he would say, look, I'd love to bring one or two defenders in.
37:57Gary Neville:And I just said up there on the podcast, I just wonder whether, I know they've built the forward line last year and I know they've built the midfield this year, but if they could just get one or two defenders in now in this next 48 hours and bring some and maybe advance some of the money from next transfer window, next August, into this one and not spend it next year, it would give Manchester United and Michael Cavic a great chance of repeating what they did last year and getting up the league and having a good Champions League run. So I do think it's important they sort the defence out. We have conceded four goals now in two games and that isn't going to go away, unfortunately, I think, first half, they could have been two or three down.
38:30Gary Neville:I think Ipswich played really well and created a lot of chances. It didn't sound from the interview, and it might be him, as you say, being sensible or trying to play the political game, but it didn't sound as though they're going to go big again in the rest of this transfer window. This is looking like the squad Manchester United have got for this season. Yeah, I think so. I think you saw what Caroz was saying there, that he's been happy with the business that they've done so far. Like Gaz is saying, I think everyone can see that the defence is problematic. They need to add some bodies there.
39:02I don't think they've got enough to be able to stop bigger teams coming to score against them. They've played Hull, they've conceded two. They've played Ipswich, they've conceded two. So, of course, it could become a problem. But when you've got the attackers in the team that you have, and if they can play like this week in, week out, then it will take less of the way that the defenders are going to have to defend and be. But yet, it's always going to be a problem if you're conceding and you're conceding. Because as a defender, when you concede goals, you don't want to see that. The forwards may be happy with obviously scoring goals, but the defence are going to be looking at it and thinking we need to stop conceding goals and keeping clean sheets.
39:52Darren, we're hearing from two former Manchester United players here on how Manchester United look ahead of this season. What is the way that Gary O 'Neill set Ipswich Town up against them and the way that they started this game in particular? Tell us about how they're seen from the outside. They're going to be in every single game. I think, as Gary was saying earlier, he expected Manchester United to come and really be on the front foot and really cause them problems. And it was the opposite. Ipswich came out, created chances, played with real freedom. So do you think they saw that vulnerability defensively and targeted it then?
40:21I think so. But also, I think he believes in what Ipswich is going to do this season in terms of the attacking players that he's brought in, the way he set the teams up, Nunez in behind Emerson. I think he believes every single week now, Ipswich can be in a game, they can create problems, they can score goals. And defensively, yeah, I think one or two decisions went against them. You think a slip from Nunez, how often is that going to happen? That doesn't happen again. They got a bit unfortunate with the Maguire handball. So there's another one. So there's a few areas around the goals where you'd go, it's a little bit unfortunate.
40:48But other than that, that first half performance, He'll take the boys back. They'll watch that first-half performance and take great confidence from that, thinking that if we play like this in every single game this season, more than not, we're going to pick up more points and we're going to be in every single game. It's going to be very rare that they get blown out like they did second half. So I think it was outstanding today. The second goal that Manchester United conceded was deep into injury time. It was pouring with rain. The game was already won. It was 5-1 at that stage. Does it matter too much that they conceded that goal?
41:17Gary Neville:It'll matter to Lissandro Martinez. It'll matter to the goalkeeper. It'll matter to the goalkeeping coach. It'll matter to the other defenders. I played it, to be fair, in the United team that did concede goals and were far better going forward at times than we were defensively. But it used to bug you when you conceded one or two goals because you wanted to try and keep clean sheets. And, yeah, it will annoy them. It will annoy them because I think that, you know, you're defending all week in training. You know, Alessandro Martinez, Maguire, Larmans, the defensive coaches will be looking at it and thinking, we've got to try and establish a defensive unit here, not just the actual defence, but certainly they get put under the most pressure when you're conceding goals and obviously the midfield in front of them.
41:56Gary Neville:So to concede two goals will really bug them. It's not material in terms of the impact on the day. Manchester United won the game comfortably. They were brilliant in the second half. The football was magnificent and those fans are going across that forecourt back home delighted that they've seen exciting football and loads of crosses and shots and things like that. But it just will bug the defenders. It'll bug them because they're trying to build trust. and conceding goals undermines that and it just takes away trust. That's the thing that will annoy them. It will annoy them in the dressing room.
42:23Gary Neville:The forwards won't care. You know, these lot, by the way. They'll be out there with champagne, drinking champagne, thinking they've done their job. It's the same thing for all when it's winning 4-0 and not having scored. It's the same feeling, isn't it? You're delighted for the team, obviously, but a personal irritation. We need to get you on Brynna Fernandes as well because we've heard from Dan and from Ashley on him. A hat-trick today, his third for Manchester, United, first in the Premier League for five years. For all the criticism that he occasionally gets, Bruno Fernandes, when he plays like this, when he's driving that team forward and putting in that kind of performance, what can he bring at his best?
42:58Gary Neville:He's exceptional. He's the best Manchester United signing in the post for Alex Ferguson here by an absolute mile. I think the biggest accolade that you can get in football is being voted the PFA Player of the Year because that's your fellow professionals and it's hard to get opposition dressing rooms to vote for you. and I don't think the criticism's been there against him in the last 12 to 18 months. I think that, to be fair, he's ridden that period where his body language or maybe sometimes he did get a little bit frustrated and he sort of reacted and things like that as a captain. He's completely changed in this last 12 to 18 months.
43:29Gary Neville:He's matured. He's now got the respect of his professionals to the point whereby they're voting him the PFA Player of the Year. He's exceptional in the sense that he takes risks. He passes forward. He always looks to impact the game positively. he never doesn't want the ball and look, he's Manchester United's world-class player and everything that he does really is fantastic it's the consistency in that position is very difficult to achieve and Manchester United's teammates should be very grateful that they've got him It's the dynamics as well, whenever he's got the ball if you look at the attacker's movement in Bwemo, Cunha, Sesko when he comes on it's almost like they know as soon as he's got the ball they're on their bike because not only does he give you the pass he sees a pass and he gives you to with quality I mean the Mbrembo goal as you said there he just lets it go across his body and just drops it into an area he's the only player in the Manchester United team that could have seen that pass and then executed it so as Gasper said there he has been absolutely sensational for a long time now and finally you'd have to say he's probably getting the credit he deserves and he could have left he could have left he could have sort of said no this is not for me I want to go and play somewhere else I want to but he's not He's hung in there and I think that builds a massive amount of loyalty with the Manchester United fans.
44:43Gary Neville:He came through that very difficult period where he was getting criticism, people questioning his captaincy, including us. We were saying, well, you know, is this guy the right person to lead the team? But he's got through all that and, you know, look at those players that he's up there with. Gary, we've had a letter in from a Jamie Carragher who says, would you like to talk about Marcus Rashford? It's not really, really. Actually, today, look, there is an element of Marcus Rashford. We will stop talking. Well, Marcus Rashford doesn't want people to stop talking about him because that means that he's not playing football well or people are ignoring him, and that's not what you want to be as a forward.
45:17Gary Neville:But today, what he did was deliver a 7, 7.5, 8 out of 10 performance, and that's what he needs to do every single week. And we were just saying, weren't we, off camera, I love it when he makes those runs from out to in. They're devastating, those runs. And he has got players that can find him in Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, Alessandro Martinez. so those runs are devastating for me, so quick he's okay when he's out wide but he's far more dangerous when he's making those runs inside and he actually got in at the back post a couple of times as well which is what he has to do so I thought it was a good day for him and yeah, you should want to be talked about I think as a forward if you're a forward in any Premier League team we've talked about NC so today because he contributes if he starts not playing well then we'll talk about him for a different reason that's why we're talking about Marcus Rastrow because we've all thought so much of him at times during his career in his sort of what will be last 10 years that we scored 30 goals one season.
46:07Gary Neville:Not a lot of players do that, so that's the standards that he's set. So the answer was yes, you do want to talk about Marcus Rashford. Yeah, you do want to talk. Actually, this is one of Manchester United's great stories. He joined the club at the age of eight and obviously he's gone to Barcelona. He's obviously been sent back. This is a big moment for him in his career. It's now or never really in terms of what will be the highest level of Premier League football. He's got to deliver in this next two or three years and I think he can. Seven goals for Manchester United in this game between Manchester United and Ipswich at Old Trafford today.
46:36Of the 17 that we've seen so far on Super Sunday, seven of them as well at Stamford Bridge. Cole Palmer on the score sheet in that 4-3 victory, following on from a 3-2 scoreline in their opening game against Fulham, even with a brand new goalkeeper.
46:54Gary Neville:Yeah, I mean, look, after Monday Night Football, I think we both said, me and Cara in the studio, that they had to make the decision to bring in a new goalkeeper and they've done that and they've brought a big personality in, as he says. I think you specifically said Emi Martinez, didn't you? I did have to have said Emi Martinez, actually. I thought that would be the one that was available. And of all the strange decisions Chelsea have ever made, taking your advice. They've got three centre-backs there. I think it was Colwell, Lacroix and Fafana that played there. And I just look at what I see are very talented defenders in a lot of teams, but I don't see units.
47:26Gary Neville:You used to see a back four, you used to think, oh, they're a good back four or they're a good back three. I actually don't, you just don't see now. I mean, I don't know whether it's just the quality of the attacking play, maybe, I'm not sure. But Arsenal, of course, when you think of, say, Timber and Calafiori and Saliba and Gabriel, you think that's a proper back four with a goalkeeper right behind them. And that's the only real team I look at right now. And obviously, you know, City had it when they were winning the league. And I just don't see it, that sort of back four. Obviously Liverpool had it with Robertson, Trent Alexander, Arnold, Van Dijk and Canate and Matip.
47:58Gary Neville:But yeah, there's a real lack, isn't there, of units that are really good, solid units now that you watch. Yeah, and Chelsea will have had aspirations to go for the title this season. We always talk about title challenges as having those really strong defences. Is this what might cost them at that final hurdle? I think so. I mean, they've addressed one issue, which was the goalkeeper, because you very rarely get a team that wins the Premier League with an average goalkeeper. would have upgraded with Emi Martinez. And they are going to be involved in games like we saw today, 4-3, where they were so comfortable but still conceding goals.
48:30I think them and United are going to be similar because they've both got really incredible and attacking front threes. You look at Chelsea's incredible, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rodgers, Gael Pedros, and you look at what we saw today for Manchester United. They're always going to be in games. I think those final little moments where you need maybe to eke out a 1-0, that's where Chelsea and maybe Manchester United might fall short.
48:48Gary Neville:And Liverpool have got Barkola, Gakpo, Vert, Eketike, Isak, Engelmo. They've got a real great group of attacking players. And then you think defensive, the full-backs, it's to not support Andoni Areola and give him full-backs. And for United not to give a back-up at right-back or left-back to either, because Joros come on today, that can't be a back-up full-back. And for Chelsea, maybe that's the next part of their recruitment. They have recruited well this summer, maybe that's their next part. But they have got talented centre-backs. But yeah, just that defensive part for a few of the teams is a real problem.
49:20Not the ideal debut for Emi Martinez, your former Aston Villa teammate, conceding three goals. Not really at fault for any of those goals, but what will he bring longer term to Chelsea? I think we said that the personality that he brings, he commands his box, is a fantastic goalkeeper. He's won the World Cup, he's won the Europa League. Does he tell you that? Of course he does. Yeah, he makes sure that we know. What's he like?
49:44Gary Neville:I always look at him and think he's someone I'd like to be in my goal because he's a big personality. What's he like? That is exactly it. He's a massive personality. He's loud behind. I said that he'd be shouting to the forward to be doing more and more running. So he's going to be massive for Chelsea. It was like that when we were at Aston Villa. He's confident in his own ability as well, and he'll tell you that too. But, you know, like I said, when you want to be challenged for titles, you need a back line with a goalkeeper that is very, very sturdy. And if you haven't got that, you won't be able to challenge.
50:21Like you said, they've recruited the front line. Fantastic with what they've done. The midfield, with Carseiro going off, they've got players there. They could be losing Enzo Fernandes as well. So maybe they might try to buy another one. But the back line is key for any teams that win Premier League. you need a settled back four, back three, whatever it's going to be, to go on and win a Premier League title. So if they're going to be challenging this season, I'm sure Xavi Lonzo is going to address that.
50:49Gary Neville:It's incredible what Arsenal have done, really, to sign Konza, because they've got Timber, White, Mosquera, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapier, Calafiore, Myles-Louis Skelly. They've already got eight amazing defenders. And then they go and sign another really good sign. They're almost like they're doubling down and saying, we're just not going to concede goals. We're just going to make sure that we're better than everybody else defensively by a million miles. and they are and that will win them title again they're not as good as actually I think if you said would you swap Arsenal's front players for United's Liverpool's Chelsea's you might actually keep the front players in place but from a defensive perspective in the midfield you'd swap all of them Talking of Arsenal they are on Monday Night Football Thierry Henry is in the studio 6.30 build up 8 o 'clock kick off for their game against Aston Villa meanwhile at Old Trafford an impressive performance for a Mipswich but they were on the wrong end of that 5-2 scoreline and while everybody's talking about new signings Bruno Fernandes has proved that sometimes it's better the Red Devil you know bye bye
