0:31So settle for that Two games in And here still are two Winless teams Thought between Thought processes Plenty going on between the ears Of Bruno Fernandes who might have altered The course of the narrative but blasted his First half penalty Over the bar Goals followed in the second half The first via Rodrigo Muniz, Euro 1 Manchester United's header he had the unwanted touch which established United's lead a lead that lasted only until Emile Smith-Rowe burst off the bench and within a minute and a half provided a truly adept finish to equalize and so satisfaction such as it is Gary has shared. Yeah I think Marco Silva and Fulham would be really happy in how they've finished their first two Premier League games.
1:28They got stronger as the game went on with the substitutions. I think Ruben Hamerim and Manchester United, the optimism of last week slightly checked. They've missed some really good chances in the first half. Bruno Fernandes misses a penalty and obviously the course of the game could have been so different but in the second half they definitely deteriorated. In the end, draw to fair result it's actually the first time in 15 years that Manchester United have failed to win at Craven Cottage and in that context perhaps Fulham will consider this a bonus point however you read it, it's a point either way Kelly, it's Fulham won Manchester United won Peter and Gary, thank you very much as you say it is shares spoiled at the end of that game and both sides still looking for their first win of this new Premier League season.
2:19We're only two games into the season, and there is still time, but Emile Smith throws equaliser, cancelled out an opener for Manchester United. Brian and Bermot are with a great opportunity to score for them. They also had a penalty that was missed by Bruno Fernandes, and it means it ends 1-1 at Craven Cottage.
2:49already so far today Chelsea beat West Ham 5-1 in the Friday night football, it finished Manchester City 0, Tottenham 2 Bournemouth v Wolves 1-0, it finished Brentford 1, Villa 0, Burnley with that 2-0 victory against Sunderland, that means all three promoted sides have now won again, all three of those wins coming at home for the sides as well, Arsenal with that impressive 5-0 victory against Leeds and then earlier today It finished all square between Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. Palace went ahead 1-0. Nottingham Forest got the equaliser. And Everton have christened their new home with a 2-0 victory against Brighton.

Manchester United took the lead. Fulham came right back into it. Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty in the game. We'll look at all of that after the break.

For now, though, let's get back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
7:25It finished all square at Craven Cottage earlier on in the game. Bruno Fernandes nudged by the referee as he prepared to take a penalty. Was that the reason? They went over the crossbar, but then Manchester United were in front. Leni Oro's effort deflected by Ofra Grigo Muniz. And then Emile Smith-Rowe, with his first touch of the game, 94 seconds after coming on, made it one-all.
7:53And we're joined by Calvin Bassi. Calvin, thank you very much for coming out to chat to us. Always a bit nicer when you managed to earn a draw from a losing position. Yeah, 100%. I think especially second half we pushed. Could have deserved more. I mean, we had some good moments, you know, with a better final pass or better finishing. It could have been maybe, you know, 2-1. But we did well to get back into game. And of course, they've missed a penalty as well. So, yeah. Talking of the penalty, because you were right at the centre of a lot of the decisions that were made today. Let's start with the penalty one, because if we don't, you'll just be waiting for us to do it.
8:30Now, you think this might be a little harsh, but have you seen it yet? Yeah, I still think it's harsh. I understand why it's given. I think, you know, where my foot is, I'm trying to stay strong because I know the block's coming. And then I've just sort of pulled him over my foot. I think if my foot isn't there, but I mean, you've got, ref's got to protect us as well. I think I'm just, obviously I'm strong, you know, so it looks a bit more aggressive. If it's someone stronger, I don't think it looks as bad. But yeah, I mean, you've seen it given, you've seen it not, it's just one of them ones.
9:05Ashley, what did you think as Calvin's friend? As his friend, definitely he shouldn't have been a penalty. If I take my friend off, head off, then, you know, I'm not too sure. I think that it could go either way. We said it in the studio that, you know, at times referees will see it and give it. At times referees will not give it. You know, I think watching it in slow-mo like that, it looks worse. Everything looks worse slow-mo, doesn't it? Everything looks worse. Well, actually, we've actually got your half-time analysis and we haven't. It was a good one, don't we? But look, from your point of view, Lewis, you know, they give away the penalty.
9:40There was also the incident behind with Luke Shaw, but obviously VAR can't go and look at that because it's not a penalty incident. There was a lot going on in that box and that's something that referees have been asked to look at, especially this season. Yeah, that's the thing. You know, when you're now playing with this new technology, you have to be aware that your hands, whatever, your body, your position of your foot will have a situation to be looked at. So there is definitely moments where you have to actually make sure that you're on the good side. It happens, as you said, sometimes it's good for you, sometimes it's not.
10:13So in those situations, you always think that whatever you are using your hands, you are trying to avoid too much contact for too long. And that's what happened, so unfortunately. What's the briefing been on what those decisions are going to be? I mean, it's hard, you know. Sometimes when you feel the contact early, you go down and the ref can give you a foul. I mean, sometimes when you're in the game and the ball's there to be won, you're just trying to get to the ball as quick as possible. sometimes you've got to get the man out of the way and I think there's a fine line between you know giving a file away and getting away with it and yeah maybe they're a bit more contact on another day maybe ref doesn't look at it or I don't know it's just one of them ones we just as players have to try to be clever and I tried to communicate with the ref because I knew the block was coming so I told him you know every corner watch the blocks watch the blocks and yeah I mean That's what happens when you're maybe like wrestling for a player who is weaker than you, obviously.
11:15That's what happens. If it was a stronger center forward, you can challenge. I think it's someone similar to my size. As I said before, it probably doesn't look as bad. Slow-mo, it's always going to look worse. Always going to look worse. So, you know, I mean, it's something to learn for me and all the boys. And yeah, just be a bit more streetwise and smarter with it. So a bit of relief then when the penalty was missed by Bruno Fernandes. I think, you know, I say it's justice. God had my back to, yeah, I mean, I didn't think it was a pen and then he's missed it. So, I mean, yeah, it's sort of a let off you see me put my fist up in the air.
11:54It's a bit of relief, yeah. Yeah, I think it's interesting. Gary Neville pointed out in commentary that the ref kind of knocks Bruno Fernandes in the build up to the penalty. to not obviously in his run-up, but in the sort of time just before. Is that really something that can put a player off? I think that, you know, at the time, obviously, a penalty taker has got a routine that they like to go through. And when you're practising it in training, you're not going to have a referee that's in the way, that steps into you or bumps you out of the way. And I think Lui will know, he's taken many penalties, that once you've got your routine and you go through that routine, you don't need anyone putting you off.
12:34You know, you could say the referee's not really done a lot, he's only just touched him, but when you've got a routine and you go through it and it's the way you take the penalties, then maybe it can put you off. And, you know, I think to be honest, as soon as he's been touched by the referee, he's got anger inside him and then I see the penalty going over like it did. You know, you can tell that it's a problem. This is the type of reaction you have seen over the years. We complain about this overreaction, he's throwing his hands and all that. So those reactions where everyone is going to judge every movement, I think he put himself in a position.
13:06And when you miss, you obviously come back to Ponditri and say, oh, this is obviously something that has had an effect on him. So that's something that you need to work on. Calvin, as we said, you were at the centre of a lot of decisions today. The other one was there was an incident in the build-up to the goal. So it was Leni Jorra's header. It came off Rodrigo Munoz in the end for Manchester United. there are there are two hands on your back here i think it's it's the same as my one it's a foul like um he's pushed me and stopped me from getting to the ball so i think when the ref looks back at it they'll be disappointed um but yeah i mean i don't know it's just can't say too much before i get a find you know they said they said not enough force did you talk to him on the pitch Come on, it's a foul.
13:54Everyone knows, you know how it is as a player. You know, it's when you go up to jump and any little touch can put you off. And yeah, he's got two hands. I don't know. How much force do you need? But yeah, on another day, it works in our favour. Did you talk to the ref on the pitch? Yeah, I did. I told him. I told him. Obviously, they've got a rule. Only the captain can speak to him. I told my captain and he spoke to him, but they haven't checked it. Did you ask him why he didn't check it? yeah he just I'm not really sure like he weren't trying to speak to me he was trying to speak to our captain and he wouldn't speak to anyone else so I was like just make sure you check it and I don't know he's took a minute before he's given a goal so maybe they have maybe they haven't but they are checking it but like you said they've come back and decided that there wasn't as they say enough force to understand the decision what do you want me to do like jump on the floor I mean it's enough for me not to be able to win the ball and I think it's it's an advantage to him so it should have been disallowed.
14:53Do you think it's a similar level of force to the penalty that was given? Is that enough to disallow a goal? Is that enough to overturn? Calvin's telling us how it felt to him. This is normal. This is how he felt during the game. His strength sometimes is an advantage. Sometimes he's not, depending on the size. And there is like, obviously, in slow-mo, it's a bit less worse than what we've seen for the first penalty. So I will think that based on a moment where you have motion, you have speed and you have strength, it's always very hard for the referee to make the right decision. And this one is not as obvious.
15:31That's why you get away with it. Let's take a look at happier moments. Let's take a look at the equaliser. 94 seconds, Emil Smith-Rowe was on the pitch before he brought Fulham level. Yeah, I mean, Emil is a player with a lot of quality. We trust him, we believe in him. He didn't start today, but what a reaction. I think he gives us something different to Josh. He arrives in the box so well. As you've seen there, he's arrived amazing and just got there in front of the keeper. Yeah, we're just happy with him and hopefully he can keep building and building and getting more goals and big moments like that for us.
16:07You have a lot of playmakers. You know, Andre Pereira was not there today, but with those kind of movement, those kind of solution all the time, with your strikers that you have, you're always creating chances, but on the way you're starting the game and you feel like more confident in the second half, you're starting to actually impose in midfield. We couldn't cope, I would say, in so many moments in the game. So is this something that the manager really asked to actually get dominant, get confidence in midfield? Yeah, of course. I mean, you know, all week we're analyzing and seeing how we can hurt them.
16:38And of course, defensively, it's five, two, three. Obviously, We have three in the midfield, clear overload, and it worked for us, you know. We just had to be dynamic. Alex went in there and got the ball and sort of had like a free roll, same as Josh, and it was working for us, so we kept on doing it. And, yeah, I mean, for that goal, it's just a bit of quality, and, yeah, we've been able to get level. It looked like there was something you was working on. Obviously, the eight's running in behind. You know, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount were in there. What we say is the corner run. and Alex, I know Alex from playing with him, he passes that ball all the time and if you've got players that are running off there, you know he's going to find you.
17:21So was that something that you'd worked on in the week that you saw a weakness maybe in Manchester United's defence? Yes, I know. I think it's one because, as you said, Alex does it all the time, you know, and it's about building relationships, you know. Alex got a good relationship with Emil and with a lot of the boys, Sasha, and both our strikers. Every time he cuts into that right foot, He's looking for that ball, either front post or back post. He's just got away from Raul, but Emil's just been alert and made a good run in the box and it fell to him. So, yeah, I think it's just building relationships and understanding each other and how they play.
17:55Alex likes to float inside because Jedi's always going to be out wide. Listen, Calvin, really appreciate you coming out to talk to us. We've kept you here for quite a while, so we're going to let you go. Thank you. Cheers. Thank you very much. Thanks so much. Good to talk to you. Thanks very much. Thank you. Cheers. Thank you. Thank you. We've heard from Calvin. We're going to hear as well from Alex Wobi. We were just talking about him there. And Emile Smith-Rowe. They're with Natalie. Boys, well done. A good point here against Manchester United. You made it hard for them in both ends. So what pleased you most about this performance?
18:29The resilience to come back. We knew that the difference can be made off the bench as well. It happened last game again. So, yeah, we were able to fail until the 90 minutes. And, yeah, it's better not lose. so we were able to get that point against a good team as well. Talking about difference from the bench, Emil, you needed 1 minute and 33 seconds and 1 touch to score that goal. Could you talk us through that? Yeah, it was all really quick to be honest. I know when Alex gets the ball, I know his trademark cross. I knew where he was going to put it and I just had to make sure I was there at the right time.
19:02Did you see his movement? I'll be honest, this time I didn't. I was aiming for Raul but then I know he makes that running behind as well So I just put in the area and I trust them to get onto the ball. We kind of got used to seeing players coming from the bench and making a difference in this team. How do you think you guys keep these competitive levels so high because you don't have a large number in terms of squad? I think it starts from training, you know, we're very competitive in training and, you know, I think it comes from there. We want to score goals, we want to contribute to the team and we know when we come off the bench, we have to work hard and try and score, so, yeah.
19:38Alex, you kept putting yourself in good positions throughout the game. What helped you the most to find this position, especially to play through Man United's midfield? I had trust in whether it was going to be Cesc or Jeddah or Anthony Robinson coming on the pitch to push on high and it allows me to go in that pocket. It's something we worked on in training and we were able to execute in a match. We knew that we would be able to get behind their two midfields and the three centre-backs wouldn't want to jump. So we exploited that today. And Emil, of course you had a tough season last season with injuries.
20:08So what are your expectations for this one? I think just to stay fit, get consistent minutes on the pitch. Give my all for the team and hopefully we can start winning games as well. And what would be a good season for Fulham, Alex? To get more points than we did last season. I mean, we broke the record, so we aim to break it again and hopefully challenge for our European spot. Emil, well done for the goal. but please do the honours for Player of the Match. Thank you, my guy. Appreciate you, bro. I'll shout you, dog. Player of the Match performance from Alex Iwobi. And while Fulham are still to get their first win of this very new season, have you seen enough to be encouraging for them for the rest of the season?
20:51Alex Iwobi talked there about their target being just to improve on what they did last season. I think there is a good sign. There is an element where Marco Silva can bring them forward. There is definitely quality there. They're showing it regularly now. They need to get more points. That's obvious. But in a way, it's against the team that they expect to win. There are moments where they have great performances against big teams like Man United, Liverpool and all those teams. They managed to do that last year. But they're right. I think they have conceded goals. They have, obviously, show a bit of moment during the games where they're off a bit and they get punished.
21:33So they need to be a bit more clinical again. And that's what Fulham will be looking for this season. We'll hear what their manager thinks of it very shortly. In fact, we'll hear from both managers, Marco Silva and Ruben Amarin, will be speaking to Natalie next.
21:57Hello, I'm Juliet Farrington. And I'm Joe Tomlin. And we're the hosts of the one-on-one podcast from Sky Sports. 23:40A one-all draw for Manchester United, having led 1-0 in this game. Bruna Fernandes also missed the penalty. United still looking for their first win of this very new Premier League season. Let's here from Ruben Amorim with Natalie Jedra. Ruben, you looked frustrated during many moments in the match. What frustrated you the most about the performance? It was, I think we can do better, but we are putting the effort. So that is the most important thing for me. I think in some moments we did well, especially in the beginning of the game. And I felt that after the goal, we were thinking about the result.
24:23Just the result. And this team needs to win games. So we need to focus on the performance, what we need to do. Because if we think about the results, we forget to do the normal things. So that was my feeling. We were okay until the goal. We scored a goal and we should do the opposite. So we have more possessions, push more the opponent. And I think we were not smart in that moment. Do you think then the challenge, the main challenge is to keep that urgency, that mentality of not only the result, but also how do you push that into the players? No, it's just we have to think in this moment we need to think about the performance.

25:06Of course, I'm not crazy. I know what is the feeling of a player that plays in the team that has to win every match. But I felt that in the past. I don't feel lack of urgency in this moment. What I felt is that we missed the penalty, we missed some chances and then we scored. And I have the feeling that the team was now we have to defend this goal. And that is not lack of urgency. It's maybe urgency in the opposite side. So we just need to focus on our movements, the way we have to play the game until the end. Yeah, defensively, why do you think Fulham kept getting into good positions and with corners as well?
25:46They were always looking dangerous. Yeah, it's normal. I think we tried to press high and was after one, two times, we need to understand that sometimes we need to manage the game to wait for the opponent. Was that the option of Fulham? And sometimes we pushed the ball to the side too soon. It was easy, quite easy for the opponent to mark us. And we wanted to press all the time. We want to do that, but sometimes we have to be better in that moment, understand the game, try to drop a little bit and then start the pressure. So they had more space than us when they were attacking. Bruno's penalty, we saw that the referee kind of bumped into him and he looked upset and disrupted by it.
26:31Did he mention anything to you about that? Do you think it was enough to disrupt him in the way that he took the penalty? No, I think he's not used to miss a penalty. He knows the importance that every moment in this context can have a huge impact on the team. And I felt that during the game he was not so happy, not so involved, because he has so much responsibility and I think he felt that miss the penalty was a use for us. You mentioned the result. Do you think this is something that the team is bringing from last season? This need to get results and you guys need to deal with it better mentally?
27:16That is normal. We just want to win games. And there are humans, they know the context, they read everything and they know they're playing in one club that they need to be better. But for me, during the week, it's completely different. They work really hard. Today, they work really hard. Sometimes not in the good way, but they work. So with that, I can work. And with that, I'm really confident that we are going to get many wins. Thank you, Ruben. Thank you. So Amarim's impressed with the level of work, even if, Louis, it's not quite what he's asking them to do just yet. He said sometimes they're working hard, but in the wrong way.
27:55But there were suggestions that there were improvements last week, despite the defeat by Arsenal. There were certainly signs that there were improvements this week in this performance at times against Fulham. Are there signs that things are moving in the right direction under Amarim? I think so. There is the right communication. He's very honest. He says what he sees. And I like the kind of clear vision that he's got. He's got a clear vision. Yes, they are in a process, so things are not going to be understood by everybody. There are mistakes going to be made and all that. So I like this process.
28:28You still have young players, especially in a forward position. Last year, it was a bit of difficulty to manage that, because you have to teach them, and at the same time, you have to show confidence. Now, I think we saw there is like links coming. You know, it's strength coming. There is courage in taking certain type of position. but yes, they're still liking that dominance in midfield. That's why I think you'll be highlighted that. There is elements where the position of the striker is going to be very decisive. I think we need to play in a way where the two playmakers are a bit narrow. They can give a bit more creativity or whatever, but they need to really be together in all the moments of the game.
29:13This is why I think it's unhappy. sometimes they slow down the speed and get exposed because teams are fit as well. They are committed as well and they need to really put them at a level where they're struggling physically or whatever and that's not the case. So that's why he's not happy, that's why he's frustrated and you think that they can do better. So yes, they score a goal but that's not enough. Man United need to do more and to upset and score second goal and third goal and this is the situation they are in. I think, in a way, I like what he's trying to improve or try to address. And then I think he's coming.
29:48It was quite a big topic of conversation last season that Amirim actually wanted to come in the summer. He didn't want to come in mid-season. He's now had a transfer window. It's now much more looking like his group of players. And we're not at the end of that transfer window yet. Is this almost a clean slate for him, the start of this season? or are we still judging him on what went on last season as well? I think it's a clean slate. Like you said, he'd come in halfway through the season and it wasn't when he wanted to come in. He's had a summer transfer window. Obviously, there's still time to do a few more dealings.
30:21Maybe they will, maybe they won't. But I think once the window shuts, then you know this is his team. Like Louis has been saying there, you've got to take positives out of what we've seen, especially like the man just saying in the first 20 minutes, how they started the game. And they started quick. and Fulham didn't know what to do. But it's just then when you go a goal up, especially when you come to Craven Cottage, you need to go and get the second goal. You need to kill the game off. And they wasn't able to do that. So it's still a bit of indifference there, but there's, like I said, there's positives to take.
30:52And, you know, we spoke about, you know, if you're going to have Cesco up top, the big target man, you've got to have two number tens that want to run off him and, you know, get him behind. We haven't stretched the pitch enough. And, you know, I think Fulham felt comfortable when, you know, he come on that there wasn't really much running in behind and you know I think fitness tells us as well that Fulham looked like they went up a gear and United literally just sat there and you know when you're doing that and you come to a place like Craven Cottage it's going to be tough so it was there was positives in the game and I'm sure the manager will take positives out of it and you know like you say it's a clean slate but you know it's about getting the wins and moving forward and scoring goals.
31:30If they do add more in the transfer window where do you think they're going to be looking to strengthen? Obviously, the goalkeeper situation needs to be sorted out, but do they need to strengthen in midfield, for example, as well? I think so. This is why I think they've been in the transfer market looking for some Brighton players, just to mention. They need power. They need people who are able to take on the ball, maybe suck the opposition, whatever, like technically, but physically as well. There is a moment in the game where you need that. You really need that aggression, but at the same time, that confidence to actually drive on and show that you are dominant.
32:08I don't think that we have that at the moment. It's been said not only by me, but I think that's what you're saying. Then it's all about attitude. I think the approach of the game where they're saying there is maybe sometimes where they think about the results, whatever the approach needs to be a bit more courageous and say, no, we have a style, we have the confidence to score more. And this is where they need to get that level up. It's not about new players or new signing or whatever. It's about this attitude and ensuring that we are good enough and we're going to do that for 95 minutes. Louis said a Brighton player.
32:41Would Baleba or someone like him be the answer for Manchester United? I think you do need someone else in that midfield. I think Casemiro was in there today, Bruno Fernandes was in there and then when it was changed it was Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount. and Alex Wobie was picking up pockets of space that they couldn't track. There was midfield runners that were running off where you need a midfielder if the centre-backs are picking up the Fulham forwards. You've got to track midfielders there and it just looked like there was spaces opening up. It was a mentality thing that you've got to pass it on and talk to each other and help each other out, but I think there's going to be some more movement in this transfer window and I think Man Utd do need a midfielder that can play as well as defend, can get up and down the pitch.
33:27And if it's that player from Brighton, then possibly he might be the answer. And at the same time, just to look at what Amorino said about the frustration of Bruno Fernandes, we've seen it. I think he was like middle of the park, trying to control the game. It was a bit deeper than he usually is. And you could see his body language was saying, I would love to be involved a bit further up. And I think a player alongside him who some moment can show is say, go on, I've got the confidence and I'm going to actually take care of those situations and create some transition for you to create. And at the moment, that's not the case.
34:02Louis, tell me a bit more about the integration of Szczesko. You've both mentioned him. You've both mentioned how Manchester United are going to need to adapt to that and what he's going to need. How much of it is about him learning how to play with that team, them learning how to provide for him? because 25 minutes against Arsenal, 37 minutes today, it's hard to adapt to him if he's not playing. Yeah, it is hard, but it's a process. You have to believe the understanding of the manager. He sees you, he understands the kind of need that you have to, when you come from another championship, it's not the same.
34:40The Premier League is really tough. I was saying about the welcome package that I receive. You get bullied, you get all those things, and you have to really understand. And by being in Man United, it's not the same. You really have to understand there is pressure coming, there is expectation, all this. And you have to learn when everybody is asking a result, asking goals and statistics. So it's a process. And I think the manager understands that. He tries to get not the same mistakes that maybe he's done with Rasmus. It's not him. But there is element where those players need experience. I always felt like, you know, back in two years ago, I was thinking about Hurricane, those type of players who were able to really teach you a lot of things about his movement and all that.
35:23So I think in this situation where if the transfer market is closed and they don't have another addition up the field, I think he has to go with a few games like this where he's brought in, put confidence, he has some nice touches. I really feel like he can create a partnership with those two playmakers just behind him. I think he needs to be closer and I think we will see chances. And as you said, it doesn't look like it's worked out with Rasmus Huelen, not involved in the squad today. The AC Milan deal isn't happening, but Napoli, the latest team to be linked with him. But for Cesc, and you talked about statistics, 16 touches, only one of them in the Fulham penalty area.
36:03Is that down to him not making the runs or him not expecting that the balls are going to be coming into him? A combination? I think it's going to be a combination. You know, he's only been in there a couple of weeks, so he's got to learn a new team, a new style of play, I think, because it would have been different to the club he was at before. You know, Ruben Amrum's going to expect a lot. And like Louis said, when you join a club like Manchester United, there's so much expectation, there's so much noise outside. It's starting to learn what players do, the runs that they do. And, you know, it's a formation where if you're the target man, you're going to need runners off you.
36:36And we said that we said we need the number 10s to be either running behind or getting around him. I think at the time when he'd come on in the game as well, Man United were on the back foot and Fulham had started to grow more and more into the game. So it was difficult, it was tough, but everybody's seen what he can do, everyone's seen what he could produce. It's just learning more in training, getting to know the players even more and then showing his capabilities and his abilities on the pitch. In the end though, just one goal for Manchester United in that one-all draw. Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty.
37:08You've heard us talking a little earlier about the fact that he got that nudge from the referee, which may or may not have put him off his pre-penalty preparations. It was missed by Bruno Fernandes, and he's been talking to Natalie Jedra about it. Shortly before your penalty, it looked like the referee kind of bumps into you. I don't know if that affected your concentration at all, because you seemed pretty upset about it. Yeah, I was upset, obviously. as every penalty taker you have your own routines, you have your own things that you do. It upset me because the referee didn't apologise and that was what triggered me in the moment, but that's not the excuse to missing the penalty.
37:53I just had a very bad hit on the ball. I took my foot to under the ball and that's why the ball ended up going over the bar. So that is that cleared up. Bruno Fernandes saying it did affect him I mean, you talked earlier, Louis, about small margins in football. And just when you've got that penalty-taking routine, it can be something that small that may put a player off their stride. But you talked as well about the fact that he needs support in midfield. It's not just about him producing these big moments, as he has done so many times, these important goals for Manchester United. Other players need to be taking responsibility as well.
38:33It is the truth. so many times he has been the saver, able to actually create in difficult moments where he was pressing, when he was like trying to do the leadership and all those things. So we're asking a lot. And what has been sometimes the focus story, it was about this kind of behavior, lack of maybe calmness in a very important moment. So I do think that it's something that is part of his game. I remember playing with Rayne Wooné and you can't calm those players. You know, it's part of their almost DNA and what they need to fire, to have like that creativity. So it's something I won't say to him, oh, don't do this, don't do that.
39:20No, I think it's more about him to understand there is moment for that. There is like those calmness. It's where when you have this ability, you have this expectation from everybody. and those moments where you have a need of reset, your own reset. So basically it felt like bumped or something like this, pop, a reset. And then you are very focused, you know your quality, you have been doing it for many, many years, bang, bang, it's in the goal and that's it. And it's something that's easy to say on the mic, but I think it's got the quality to do that. And there is definitely other players who can, you know, came and have this confidence and showing that he's not the focus all the time.
40:01As we remember, I remember Paul Pogba was the focus. Every time, even if I was on the stand, we were at his back. I think that's the pressure of Man Utd all the time. It's always about the best player, always about who is the leader. I think that's something that he has learned and he has to cope with it. So it was a one-all draw between Fulham and Manchester United. We'll hear what Marco Silva had to say about that very shortly. and we'll also look back on the earlier kickoffs today where it was a battle of the boardrooms elsewhere, but the new home of Everton, they christened it with a 2-0 victory.

41:22Fulham were 1-0 down at home, but they came back to draw 1-1 in their first home match of this new Premier League season. Let's hear what Marco Silva made of it. He's with Natalie Jedra. Marco, a lot of resilience, a lot of diligent performance, tactical tweaks. So, which was the most important thing today to get the point against Manchester United?
41:48Many things. The commitment with the plan, first of all. Of course, the attitude, our will, the desire. Of course, again, the players that come in, they made a massive impact in the game too. And overall, looking to the game, first 15 minutes better, Man United, they started better than us. We had some difficulties to adjust and with some normal things, some runs in behind. In the first 15 minutes I think we lost almost all of them and they built from that moment. They had two very good moments with Mateusz to score. We had a great one with Josh as well, great, great one from Josh. 1v1 with the goalkeeper too, but they started better.
42:37From the first 20 minutes I think we did control really well. The way you press, it'll be tired, sometimes medium, but the way we were prepared for our pressure we didn't give many spaces to them. And after they just created some moments from set pieces, nothing more from the first 25 until the end of the game, nothing more. They scored, great reaction from the boys, proud from the reaction really in the difficult moment of the game. The way the goal came and all that stuff, a clear foul. But the boys reacted very well. You finished the game stronger, you finished the game around their box with some good moments for us as well.
43:14I'm proud of the fans, the way they were with the team, as always, until the last whistle. It was very important for us. We didn't win, we wanted to win. It was important to start with the three points at home, but we have to understand that we face a big team too. I saw you were very frustrated with their goal. Can you understand why the VAR wouldn't change that decision? I cannot understand. I would like to explain everything to you from the first wheel until the last. But I don't have this. It's not my job. I don't have these competences as well. I don't want to go in this direction. I think everybody in the world saw what's happened this afternoon at Grave & Cottage.
43:50Your subs doing well is a story that we've known for a while. What's been important for you from the manager's perspective to manage this group of players, because we know you don't have a very large group of players. And is this as well a good argument for you to have more signings, because you can use really well this group of players that you have? And we need, I'm repeating always, we have a great group of guys, lots of boys, as you want to call them, they have their families, all the things, but they are guys that they give always everything for their shirt, They have the right mindset, open mind always to try to learn.
44:27We adjusted some things this week to prepare well the game strategy point of view and they understood, they executed well and they are giving everything as always. And the guys that love the football club, they love them as well. They have to be proud of course. We as a club, we need help. Myself and the players, they need help and they need the new sign-ins to give different conditions for us to give different solutions at the end, to have more competitiveness every single day because just in this way you can grow. But as you mentioned, the players that came in, they were brilliant again. Last week was the same, last season was the story of our season two.
45:04But if you don't have the right guys, then they understand, for example, Harry Wilson, he has had a great, great press season, probably was the player more highlighted during the press season. And related with our strategy, today he started on the bench, massive impact from him. Raul, that started last week, this week on the bench. And of course, Emil, he helped the team last week with the build-up of the goal for the corner. This afternoon he scored. He knows how it's important for us and he can score goals and arrive in the right spots. Thank you, Marco. Thank you very much. Louis, there was a lot that was familiar about that Fulham side, not least because they only made one signing over the summer, that was the goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, but also this ability to bring substitutes on who will change the game for them.
45:45Emile Smith-Rowe scored 94 seconds after coming on. Talk to me a little bit about Marco Silva's in-game management of his team. I think when you look at what he has brought to Fulham, it's the capacity to play really sleek football. They know how to pass the ball, especially when I was very impressed with Andre Perra over the years. And now they have this confidence, really like from the back, from the midfield. They have the power, the size, those guys. I used to play with Luis Boamorte with Barrières, we are not that big and now they are the unit. So they have the great balance and at the same time they brought some players who really can finish.
46:28So I thought that's his style and I really managed to get those consistency through the season. You don't feel that they don't play with that same spirit and this is where I think that they need to keep going and probably find that belief again to not lose those games where sometimes, as I said, they miss 20 minutes and they get punished. And I think that where you can hear his confidence, he can communicate very strongly and very efficiently with those players and he works really well. And also, just to pick up on a point that Louis made earlier on, which is that they have this ability to put in really good performances and get really good results against teams that they wouldn't be expected to get those points again.
47:12Yeah, of course. And I think you look at today's game, obviously, you know, the manager said that the first 15, 20 minutes, they weren't really in the game. But, you know, you look at the way they played and Louis just said then, you know, they're playing out from the back. They're playing through the lines. They're getting players on the ball that can hurt teams. And, you know, like you say, when you've got a Fulham team that come up against teams, Manchester United, you know, Liverpool, Chelsea, whoever it is, they're going toe-to-toe with them. and they're not changing their style. They're wanting to go out and play in a way where they want to have the ball, they want to have possession and they've got people that can score that are on the pitch.
47:48They've got players that come off the bench, which we saw again today, that can score. It's a team game and it's like you say, when you've got that confidence in your teammates to go out there week in, week out and go and produce, this Fulham team, they're dangerous on their day and I think we saw that again today. Earlier today, it was party time in Liverpool at Hill Dickinson Stadium, where Everton crowned their first performance with a 2-0 victory against Brighton. Ilamintiay with the first of them, the assist provided by Jack Grealish, a second assist for him, the first time he's done that in a Premier League game for three years.
48:27and that came from James Garner who hasn't scored in two years. All in all, a fantastic day for Everton at their new stadium. Let's hear from, well, we'll hear from Jack Grealish shortly. We'll hear from David Moyes shortly, but first Jack Grealish. Just how special was the performance for you as well? Yeah, no, it was massive, you know. I think I absolutely love my time, you know, at Man City and I had a great four years there, won a lot of things, but I don't know, this summer I felt like it was time for change and I've said before, you know, in a different interview, as soon as I spoke to the manager David Moyes on FaceTime, I knew this was the place that I wanted to come and yeah, there was a lot of reasons why I wanted to come here and yeah, today shows why.
49:15David, congratulations, of course a historic day, but how proud of you are you of that performance? Very proud, I think everybody who manages against Brighton will tell you how difficult it is to play against them. It was again today but thankfully we were able to find a way of getting a great result for the first game here at the stadium. Frustrating feeling, disappointing because I think we had good elements in the game, we started quite well with greater chances but in football it's about scoring and not conceding goals and we are today not on our highest level. First win, first time of asking here in the atmosphere, it was brilliant all throughout the day.
49:52Yeah, and I think that it will grow. The more the people get used to it and everybody gets used to the stadium and all the things, now we need to give them a top team because we'll certainly get a top stadium. In terms of any more sort of incomings or outgoings in the transfer window, can we expect to see anything else happening at Brighton? I don't think so. Can I ask about the transfer window? Do you see any more business being done before the end? Yeah, definitely do, yeah. Well, very strong from David Moyes there. definitely business will be done. What do you think they need? Well, he's obviously looked at the squad and he's like, we want to maybe get more players in all positions.
50:31You know, you've seen the players they've brought in so far that have been attacking players. They've obviously brought in a left back, but maybe he wants to add some more competition to the squad. And, you know, it's always good to have numbers and squad players and everyone fighting and the competition. That's what you want. You want in the squad, everybody fighting, and having that competition to want to be in that starting line-up. So, like I said there, he was very quick to say that there's going to be definitely more additions. So, I guess we'll have to wait and see. There were one of a few sides to struggle for goals last season, Everton.
51:02And I wonder if the addition of the likes of Grealish and those kind of attacking players and giving them the freedom to play in that system has helped them in terms of their creativity. Yes, because when you have David Moyes as a manager, you know that basically your defense and your midfield is going to be strong, compact. The creation of chances is maybe sometimes a problem, but you have to pick some players who are able to create their own chances, obviously with a very good conversion, because you don't have many situations like this, so you really have to do that. But I think from what I've seen, you know, Jack Rilish is some solution, but they need more.
51:43They need speed, they need maybe a bit of a complementarity because similar profile with Beto and now Barry, I think he's shown some really good quality, good sign that he can link up with other players. But I think I understand why David Moyes over the years always wanted to have like two, pretty much like every position, as Ashley said. And look, for David Moyes, he has to look to the future because he knows that atmosphere is only going to be maintained if the results and the performances are still there in a few weeks, in a few months time. But to start life in Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 2-0 victory and to put in that kind of performance, to have Jack Grealish so heavily involved, how big a win was that?
52:25How great a start to life in their new home? I think when he was sat there last night thinking about the game today, you know, he would have taken that all day. I think the players, the way the performance was, Because, like you said, the new signing is coming in and adding to what was already there. And for Jack Grealish getting the assist, it's about being confidence. We said football is about confidence, the confidence game. So, obviously getting the assist, Ineban Ndai scoring the goal as well. Last one at Goodison, first one at the new stadium. So, confidence is going to be sky high. And like you say, it can only work so long if you're putting on performances on the pitch.
53:02So, they've got to keep doing that. They've got to keep working. Like I say, David Moyes wants two players in each position. So, you know, I'm sure there's going to be additions. But if they could keep performing in that way, you know, not just at home, away from home as well, it could be a totally different season than what we've seen in the last couple of years. Yeah. And it's just today was feel good factor just all the way. There was a Jordan Pickford penalty save in all of that as well. Everything. The scenario is perfect. You could see even some players went to the to the fans and try to really like fire up.
53:32It's it's brilliant. and this is what they need because if they build something special in that stadium, I am sure I would be very surprised that teams come and feel like it's going to be a run-up park. It's not going to be possible. So I do think that Everton has to avoid what they have experienced in the last three or four years because it's been horrific for the fans. They don't deserve that. It's a great club, great city, so I just can't wait for the derby soon. it's coming it's coming and it's going to be potentially a whole different ball game when they're playing in their new stadium someone is laughing here someone is laughing here all else where today it finished 1-0 between Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest the game that was dubbed the battle of the boardroom because of the row they had with the UEFA over which European competition the sides will be playing in next season Crystal Palace went ahead in the game Ismaila Saar with the goal for them but then Nottingham Forest came back into it in the second half.
54:30Their goal scored by Callum Hudson-Odoi and it ended all square in that game. But before the match itself, lots of the talk was around the future of Nuno Espirito Santo. Let's hear what he made of the match itself. And just a couple of things to finish for. It was a lovely touching moment. You went over to the Forest fans at the end. They showed their love and appreciation. I think a lot of them had heard you speak before the game and making the commitment you did to the club. How happy does that make you feel that you're so revered and so wanted by that group of supporters? I think the bond that was created, the team and the fans, it's there to stay.
55:13It's unbreakable. Due to the fantastic moments that we lived last season together, it was a beautiful journey. We'll stick in our memories forever. No matter what happens, we always have this respect and mutual love. And very finally you spoke very openly and said how you hope to build bridges in the coming days and weeks. Edu was here today, the owner wasn't, he was abroad last night watching his other team. But the fact that Edu was here and supporting you, is this a sign that things can grow between everybody in the coming weeks and everybody can be happier and more content? I believe that that's the only way to operate in a football club.
55:50That everybody is on the same page. everybody is it's it's it's helping in the same direction so hopefully we can do it this week and move forward and take these nonsense questions that and narratives that's going around from our from our daily well i think you've done a lot to remove that today well done and thank you for being so open greg was a pleasure thank you so much thank you well as david craig put to nuno Espirito Santo, he has moved today to try and put to bed any of those rumours. He said that he wants to stay on as Nottingham Forest manager. He said he thinks that, you know, that they can work together.
56:30That's what he's hoping to do with Maranakis and with Edu. He also said in his press conference earlier in the week, where there's smoke, there's fire. So it seems to have either his view on it has shifted or the situation has shifted over the last few days. Is there a way in which this can be resolved? Can you see a situation in which Nuno stays on as manager? I think the only thing Nuno can do is take the team and take positives out of games. Winning games, you look at last season, what he did for that club. You don't understand why this has come about so early on in the season. If anything was to change, then you would have thought it would happen before the season had started.
57:13Give him a window to get transfers in as well so it's a it's a strange situation um and i i don't know how it's going to play out um i'm sure nuno was speaking there and you know we heard him saying that he wants the job and the only way to to sort it out is obviously to talk and and keep things together between him uh the owner and edu so you know i think there's going to be a conversation there has to be a conversation that's going to be talked about and hopefully things will get ironed out and sorted out quickly rather than later. Because this is a conversation, Louis, that has been going on since at least the summer.
57:53That's when people first started to be aware that there was a possibility that despite the seventh place finish that maybe not qualifying for the Champions League could put Nuno Espirito Santos future at Forest in Doubt? That's a crazy situation about football nowadays. The expectations, sometimes, as I said, the conversation you can have in boardrooms are unrealistic sometimes. It comes from a manager knowing exactly his type of players, how long it's going to take. The process is not as mathematical. So all this is a conversation and yes, Edu knows his football. I'm sure that he knows he's a very passionate guy.
58:38There is a lot of elements where you can have like compromise. You have to understand that the club need to go forward, especially after a great season where they've done so many good things together. The fans get behind the manager. So why disrupting that? It's just a matter of having a man conversation and making sure that everything that is toxic, that is negative, should be put on the side. And that's not easy, but it does not mean that it's impossible. Ashley, we need to ask you about Ipswich as well and how things are going there. Look, the results haven't been ideal at the start of the season.
59:11How have the performances been? The performances have been good. You know, we spoke after the game yesterday, obviously a 1-0 defeat, but we had all the possession, we created more chances. and it's just something that's missing. It's just a win that we need to get ourselves going. But the performances have been good. Of course, when we first started against Birmingham away, it was going to be tough. We knew the atmosphere was going to be tough and the Birmingham fans took to me pretty well. But it's one of them things that we look at ourselves after yesterday's game and everybody looks at themselves and takes account for it.
59:46It's a fantastic squad. It's a great group of players, a great group of staff and we're all in it together. We know what we've got to do. We get back on the training pitch from next week and we go full throttle when it comes to the next game, which is Derby at home. The home fans are fantastic. We want to go out there and give them a performance which they're due in a performance where we get ourselves a win and finally get our season started. And at 40, you're still feeling good? I am, yeah, just about. I was saying to Louis, I'm 40, what am I doing? But because I can still get around the pitch and I still play.
1:00:20I've still got that hunger, that desire and that competitive nature to want to win. So I'm still there. I'm giving everything I can in training every day. And I give my experience to the players and even some of the staff as well. So I'm enjoying it. Good luck for the rest of the season. Hopefully see you here again soon as well.
