0:06You're listening to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Welcome along. South London met North London on Super Sunday as Spurs made the trip across the capital to Silhurst Park to play Crystal Palace. Here's how things sounded at full time.

0:31Well, he needed that. Goodness me, he needed that, Thomas Frack. wins have been thin on the ground just the second in nine Premier League games and after some deeply damaging trips on the road he's come here to Selhurst Park tonight Thomas Frank and come away with three points a performance of grits, a performance of determination and a performance where a set piece did the trick touched home by RT Gray he's all smiles and well may he be his first ever career goal in his 112th career appearance. He's the match winner. He's the star of the show for Tottenham Hotspur. As far as Crystal Palace are concerned, though, what has been an historically good year ends with disappointment.

1:16Five without a win. Three successive Premier League defeats. This evening, 2025, ends with a win for Tottenham Hotspur against Oliver Glasner's Crystal Palace by one goal to nil. Well, it didn't need to be pretty. it didn't need to be spectacular it just needed to be effective and that is enough for tottenham hotspur and for thomas frank they get three points on the road their good away record is back up and running and thomas frank's team got it absolutely right against crystal palace who've had as we were hearing such a great 2025 but it ends on a whimper archie gray the match winner for tottenham his goal made sure that they take all three points.

2:00Lots of action that we've already missed today, including that one-all draw between Sunderland and Leeds. Sunderland went ahead in that game. Leeds went through Dominic Cavett-Lewin, came back and took a point. And this is how the table looks at this stage. So Tottenham Hotspur taking that win takes them on to 25 points for this season so far, and that's how they end 2025. Leeds stay in 16th place with their point. And moving into the top half of the table, which is where we'll find Crystal Palace, who are in 9th place after that 1-0 defeat. And a point for Sunderland is enough to take them into 7th place.

2:44They're now on 28 points.

2:53Let's take a look at what's coming up for you. Really busy Tuesday night of action in the Premier League. There are four 7.30 kick-offs, starting with Chelsea against Bournemouth, Forest Everton, Burnley, Newcastle, West Ham, Brighton. 6.30 for all the build-up across all the Sky Sports channels. And you can watch it on Premier League Multiview. Then on Sky Sports Premier League, the two 8.15 kick-offs, Arsenal against Aston Villa, Manchester United against Wolves.

3:24New Year's Day, Liverpool against Leeds, 5 o 'clock for all the build-up to that one. At the same time, it's Crystal Palace against Fulham and then two later kick-offs, which is Sunderland against Manchester City and Brentford against Spurs, who are back in front of the Sky Sports Camera. So 7.45 for the build-up to that one. Oh, Amadeus is available right now on Sky Atlantic, a new original series all about Mozart. You can watch it. live or watch it right now. Coming up though we're going to have lots more reaction to a big three points for Spurs on the road courtesy of Archie Gray's first professional goal.

4:49Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game.

5:00Borough's delivery is deep. Danso was there. And in! Archie Gray got the final touch. More set-piece problems for Crystal Palace. Archie Gray in his 112th appearance in senior football. has his first goal and it's given Spurs the lead. Jamie, it wasn't exactly a dominant performance from Tottenham, but given that they did manage to have two goals disallowed for offside as well, did they edge it in the end? Yeah, and hit the post as well, Odebeu, when he came on. Yeah, I think so. They had a lot of good opportunities. I think it was never going to be a classic because Tottenham, part of the Spurs, haven't been in the best of form.

5:40It's been difficult. The last away game was Nottingham Forest, you lose 3-0. But I thought today, all in all, I think it was a really hard-working display. I thought Richarlison, although he didn't get the two goals that were offside, I thought he led the line well. He gave a bit of a focal point to the team. And obviously Archie Gray scoring that goal. It was a lovely moment. I think we all enjoyed that one, Alan. Yeah, really lovely goal. But a difficult vote for Crystal Palace. As Jamie said, they've been on a run now of five games without a win, having had such a brilliant 2025. Does it feel like this is just a temporary dip?

6:09Are they struggling, do you think, with the effects of playing so many games this season? Well, they look like, you know, the Christmas champagne. They were flat, you know, there was just no bounce to them, no spark. It all looked a bit kind of slow. And that's the sort of mode they're in at the moment. They've only won two games at home. So it was not a surprise the result. They have been struggling a little bit. But I think it was just a game that kind of was perfect for Spurs. They got the first goal. Thomas Frank set his team up. It had his blueprint all over it. And unfortunately for Palace, they just couldn't find that moment.

6:41Let's take a look at the goal then. And this is the moment that separated the two teams. As you said, it came for Archie Gray in the end. And it wasn't, you know, the most efficient of finishes, but he just was in the right place, Jamie. Yeah, I totally agree. Colin Warnley does really well at the back foes, wins that first contact. And then Richarlison shows great athleticism to jump and leap so high to get the next one. Because he's got two, he's got Lacroix around him, he's got Lerma, and then Archie Gray is always on the move. You can see him here. He's just trying to dart in and out of areas.

7:12and he gets in behind Gay, just there, anticipates it, gambles and he gets his rewards. You can see his face there. It's starting to light up now and he's thinking, OK, I've got a nice position here. Can someone just flick it to me? Yes, I'm in. Get a little touch to it and obviously just goes over Mateta's head. He was trying to dip down to get it, but that is what you call jubilation. That is what it's all about as a footballer. It took a while, but it's come for him. I loved it because I was thinking he hasn't quite got his celebration yet. I don't know what his celebration is going to be. It's just going to go mad.

7:41Might not have had one ready just yet. But this is an area that Thomas Frank has been able to improve on with Tottenham. And it's something that he's been working on in the meantime. And it's certainly working for them away from home and worked for them on this occasion. And the match winner, Archie Gray, joins us live now from Selhurst Park. Archie, congratulations. I don't think you've stopped smiling since that goal went in. No, I mean, when I turned around, I didn't see my teammates celebrating me. I was a bit confused. I was like, have I actually just scored? But no, it's a good feeling and definitely one that took too long.

8:15You know, I don't know how long it's taken, especially the one against Leicester for Leeds. It wasn't my goal, but yeah, it's an amazing feeling. Listen, it's 112 appearances, but none of them matter now because you've got your name on the score sheet. And look, that's for Leeds and for Spurs, obviously. But listen, tell me about that moment when the ball's coming into you and you think you've got that opportunity. to be honest I didn't really think about anything it was just like a matter of I'm so close to the goal it wasn't really like I didn't really have to do much I don't think it's on here yeah because obviously I'm so close to the goal all I had to do was just flick it on really I knew Mateta was just stood on the line and Henderson couldn't really react quick enough because the ball's so close to the goal I didn't really have to do much to be fair I can't remember who flicked it on but it was a good flick Archie Jamie read that talk to us about the celebration mate just what's going on there what's going on in your mind that feeling it's the best right?

9:07Oh I can't even describe it to be honest after games even the last one even though like I said it wasn't my goal I remember the feeling and it's the best feeling you know for you work your whole your whole life for that moment and you know hopefully I can just keep keep it going so yeah. Archie, Alan Pardew you know in the dressing room have you been in there yet? Have the boys patted you on the back? Messed you around a little bit? Yeah I mean everyone was just saying and they wasn't expecting it to be a header, you know. I mean, I didn't really expect it to be a header as well, but I think that one came off my dad's instincts.

9:40So, yeah, thankful for my dad for that. Archie, because I'm going to give you a bit, because I've said 112 games, but I've watched your career very closely when you was at Leeds. You played right back, a lot of centre-back last year. So I don't think we should be too unkind on that in terms of where you've had to play. But if you were picking your team and you're the manager, where are you going to play Archie Gray in that Spurs? So where do you feel is your best position? because you play pretty much everywhere for Tottenham Hotspurs. Yeah, definitely. I'm grateful for wherever I play, but I think my best position is like a number eight.

10:10I've played there my whole life pretty much throughout the whole academy. And I think if you ask my dad, if you ask my family, someone who's watched me, you know, my whole of my life, they'll all say a number eight. So I think anywhere in midfield really is, you know, where I'd like to be the most. So, yeah. Yeah, and that's where you'd like to be playing going forward. But being part of this team and getting the victory today, how important was that after just a little run of not quite getting the results? Yeah, definitely. It's been quite a few difficult games, you know, starting from Forest.

10:44Obviously, we've had a few good performances, a few, you know, not so good ones. But like I said, it's just good to get a good result and, you know, turn things around a little bit and hopefully we can carry this on. so yeah. Archie the manager was saying that beforehand that while there might not have been back-to-back good results at times there's never been back-to-back poor performances that it's all you know a poor performance will always be followed by a good performance how important is it for you guys as a group that you managed to bounce back from difficult results? Yeah definitely I think you know I think like I said the Nottingham Forest game was was a difficult result both in you know the performance and the result as well I think that was the most important one where we had to bounce back because, yeah, it was a difficult game and, you know, every day on the training pitch with the manager, we're learning new things and, you know, trying to get better in the unit and the way we press and the way we build up.

11:34It's learning new things every day and we're just getting better as it goes. And Archie is a strict regime as a Premier League footballer, so you don't really get a proper Christmas and New Year, but you've got plenty to celebrate tonight. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you. Thank you very much. Well done, Archie. Well done, Archie. Really lovely to hear from Archie Gray there. And lovely that he gets that goal. And you both know what it's like to have that feeling. And he was giggling when you were saying to him that feeling as he just kind of ran away celebrating, Jamie. Absolutely. And he comes from great football pedigree.

12:06He was granddad, uncle, amazing footballers. And obviously his dad was a really good player as well. So for that young man, the feeling and the expectation, he said he's spoken to his dad about it. The first thing he's got to want to do is talk to his family. and that feeling of scoring. And once you've scored, Al, and I'm sure you'll agree that all you're thinking about is now, please let us win. Please let us be the winning goal. Please let me be involved in a winning team, especially when you get your first goal. So delighted for him. And it hasn't been easy. Obviously, since he came to Leeds last year, there was a lot of injuries in defensive positions.

12:34So he had to find himself in lots of positions. Probably made him a better player long term because he's learned how to probably defend. He's fought for it. There's been times he's had to play as a right back, times as a centre back. But like he said, he wants to be a number eight. He wants to be an all-round midfield player. And I think he's certainly showing that. So really pleased for him. And hopefully now he can get a good run of games. And once you get a taste for that, once you score your first goal, you say, OK, I might get another one now. You start to get in the box a bit more. And that's what he certainly needs to add to his game.

13:00And he's got the capability to do so. It's an interesting problem for the manager to try and find a solution to where you've got a player who's played really all the way through in one position, but you need him to do something else, especially when they're young and still developing. Well, I think, you know, the Spurs fans have grown to love him because he's just come in and done a job wherever he's been put. And an honest job, which he did today. I mean, he got the goal, but he was always in position. His positional sense is excellent. And that number eight, I think, is probably him. When you look at his body shape and the power and size of him, he doesn't look like a centre-back or a holding midfielder.

13:34He looks like somebody, you know, you need to release. And I thought he had a good game today. I thought Spurs played a very kind of strategic game. They stopped Crystal Palace at Salks, really. He was part of that. and Richarlison up front, I think Jamie was right, I thought he was excellent in both boxes. Did the job and he gets a lot of criticism at Spurs. So I think there was some real positives for Thomas Frank today in that performance, not least the win. And of course, a 19-year-old getting the winning goal is brilliant as well for everybody. Yeah, really good news story for Tottenham Hotspur.

14:05But for Crystal Palace, the disappointment of another defeat, another game without a victory. Let's hear from Will Hughes, he's with Emma Saunders. Will, you've huffed and puffed out there, haven't you? Where do you think ultimately you've fallen short again today? I'd probably say being ruthless in front of goals. We had our chances throughout the game, just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. I think the manner of the defeat, we can be proud of the performance as a whole, compared to last week against Leeds where I think the manager said we deserved to lose and that was one of the first games in a long time.

14:39The manager's really honest with us in terms of performance but ultimately performance doesn't get you three points and that's why we're frustrated today. That lack of ruthlessness you talk about in front of goal, 12 shots carved out today what's at the bottom of that do you think? Is it a lazy narrative to lean on fatigue and the sheer amount of games that you've had this season? Is it quality of finishing? How do you see it? Yeah definitely lazy to say that because it's nothing to do with energy or fatigue. It's just we're going through one of those stages now. All teams will go through it where they're creating chances but just don't put the ball in the back of the net.

15:13Unfortunately, we're going through that at the moment. We're creating the chances. That's the most important thing. The next stage is putting the ball in the back of the net and the results will change. We've seen that previously. I was kicking you down. Another set-piece goal conceded as well today. As a group of players, are you disappointed in yourself at the nature of that goal? Yes, especially after last week conceding four. I think we've been pretty strong on them previously for the majority of this season. So it's very frustrating because we've got a strong team, an aggressive team. There's minor details.

15:46There's been a lot of goals in the Premier League this season from set plays. So we'll have a look at it again and try and figure out. It's a shame because it is a disappointing end to what has been a truly historic year for this football club. Your 150th appearance today. You've seen a lot in a Bristol Palace shirt. How much do you think you need to lean on the positives of this year as you now turn into 2026 and hopefully turn a corner? Yeah, it's hard to see that now, being emotional after the game, but I think we'll take a step back and look at it over the next few days going into the new year and look back on the year as a whole and see it as very successful for Palace.

16:24Unprecedented in terms of what we've done, the trophies we've won, so right now it's hard to see it like that after the result, but I'm sure this week we'll see it. Thanks for your time today. Thank you. Well, Alan, they will be able to put this into context. After a few days, they'll be able to look back on this year and reflect on the trophy that they've won, reflect on the trophies, plural, that they've won and reflect on the success that they've had in progression in terms of the league. But this one will sting, and particularly because, as Will Hughes said, this sort of lack of effectiveness in front of goal has been a theme for Crystal Palace.

16:57They're the biggest underachievers in terms of XG so far this season. So they're just not being ruthless enough was the word that he used. So just show us what exactly is going wrong for them. Yeah, well, you know, the problem is that, you know, when your main striker is, you know, off form and not quite got the confidence, it's like this strike here. He's hit it between the defender's legs, which is usually a great situation, but he pulls the shot and it goes too wide. This is a well-worked set play. They overload the back post. it's a good chance you know normally you're expecting your striker to score that they didn't create a lot of chances today there's no the right side of the pitch is a little bit of a problem this was Di Veni's chance it's a big one Alan wasn't it yeah this is where he's a left footed player and he he should actually have turned the other way and he would have had a proper chance on goal the Cats have come on and improved them you know and created a couple of situations but it was just flat you know and it's another set play, first contact, it comes back in, good cross this is from Walton, good defensive header, another chance, probably the best chance of the game for Palace and that's what Will Hughes is talking about, it's those moments and the margins that we're talking about in the Premier League, those moments need to go for you and they're just not for Crystal Palace but when you look at the calendar year they've probably had more moments go for them than most clubs.

18:29So, you know, it swings and roundabouts a little bit. And we saw there a couple of chances coming down the left-hand side. But as you said, that right-hand side is a problem at the moment because they've got players missing. Yeah, because Munez has got such energy down that right. And his injury probably impacted this team more than anything. Saar's away with the African, the African. And he's been a source of one of the sort of understudies that doesn't get a lot of attention. But he nicks important goals. and like today is a typical sort of game where he might nick a goal. So there are two or three.

19:01Richards is injured and missed the game. Three big players. But, you know, they're stretched at the moment. 30 games, you know, already. It's a hell of a lot for a squad that small. Yeah, there are other teams in the Premier League whose squads have been decimated either by injury or they've got a lot of players away at AFCON. But for Crystal Palace in particular, and this is something that Oliver Glasner has been talking about since the summer. The squad depth, he feels, isn't there, Jamie. No, it's hard enough. But then you throw into the mix, obviously, being in Europe. They're very unlucky to go out the Carabao Cup on penalties.

19:38I find it really hard to be critical of Crystal Palace. They've been absolutely amazing. The effort from every single player, the management, the staff. They've been a fantastic story. And to win the trophies that they've won, no one would have believed it. But Glasner's done wonderfully well. So they'll be all right. I mean, they'll pick themselves up, lick their wounds and make sure they're ready for, you know, obviously some big games that come up. But he needs to get players back. Richards obviously had that one. He was an important player, that right. Because it's not just when, with Richards being injured, it means that Jefferson Lerma then has to go as a right centre-back.

20:08So, and then you can, it just changes the dynamic in the team. I'm a big Will Hughes fan. He's a lovely footballer to watch. So, you know, he still came in. I thought that he still had a lot of control in that midfield. But it's just tough at the moment. But as I say, I find it hard to be critical because they have done so well. And like Alan says, they're decimated by injuries. Yeah, and then that draw in Europe just means that they have another two-legged playoff. They've got two more games in their calendar and there's more games that they're trying to get through. Do you think they might go for someone in January to try and, or more than one person in January, to try and kind of strengthen their squad a bit?

20:37Well, I think there is that situation with the manager. He's obviously sort of suggesting, I want some more players. His contract's out in the summer. He's probably more important than anything else to keep him at the club. He's done such a tremendous job. So if I was the board, I would certainly be looking to feed him a player or two. Mark Gay as well. Yeah, and Mark Gay is obviously out of contract in the summer. And we could sign a pre-contract in January. Not that that would affect his performances, of course, because we know he's such an honest citizen. He's done brilliant throughout this whole saga with Liverpool.

21:12I just think that with the board that they have there, with the American ownership, that there is finance available. Whether they can get the targets over the line is another matter. Always difficult in January. Here on Sky Sports Premier League, we're going to continue to reflect on Spurs' 1-0 win against Crystal Palace. We'll be hearing from both managers, Oliver Glasner and Thomas Frank, up next.

22:16Sunderland still unbeaten at the Stadium of Light. Simon Odingor opened the scoring in this game, gave Sunderland the lead, but Leeds fought back. Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his hot streak. That's six Premier League games in a row that he's scored in now. Point to piece then at the Stadium of Light, but Spurs took all three points at Selhurst Park. Archie Gray with his first goal to make it Crystal Palace 0, Spurs 1. Let's hear from Thomas Frank with Emma Saunders. Well, Thomas, congratulations. That must feel like a really big, significant win. It was. You asked me before the game, you said it would be important to win.

22:57So I listened to you and we got the three points. Now, jokes aside, a very important win. Clearly a game where desire beats detail. I don't think that we hit a top performance today, but I like how we digged in worked very hard and I think we were very disciplined against that very good Crystal Palace team so we avoided a lot of those small half transition they're very very good at that we really had good positions there and I think we also managed to create enough chances going that way and we also defended very well so I think we gave one chance away in open play and then the rest was was set pieces so to do that in a game that is tricky and come here and win 1-0.

23:44That's just so important you do that in a long Premier League season. I suppose added to that as well, to do that with all the scrutiny, noise that's around the team as well at the moment. You were very clear, as you said, about the tactical discipline that was required in this game. Just how impressed are you with this group of players that have got it over the line ultimately, especially when you are still missing so many personnel for multiple reasons? Yeah, I think it's very impressed with the players who work very hard to show that resilience in games and also when things are not perfect.

24:17And this was a game that was not perfect but we did so many things right and also kept it very tight. And there's games you need to win like that. Also, as you say, we're missing quite a few of the offensive players and also missed the captain today. So with that in mind, he's even more impressive and I'm very happy with the win today. What about Archie Gray? How do you sum up what was a huge moment for him in the context of what he's done as a Tottenham player so far in his career. As a young player who's come in, who's adapted, who's been so flexible, he finally got his moment. Yeah, he got his match-winner moment very big, very happy with him.

24:53I think he's growing a lot. I think he's doing more and more things right in the middle of the park. Really liked that today. He just added up with a goal, so I think it was very good. What about Lukas Bergval? What can you tell us there? He was giving everything to this before he came off? Yeah, giving everything. I don't know exactly what it is. I think hopefully just a minor thing. So we'll assess him tomorrow. It is a result that sees you just edging the top half of the table almost at the halfway point now. All things considered, how do you reflect on where this team is at right now going into 2026?

25:29I think we are in that transition process. I think we've been the whole time coming into a season where we play Champions League and want to compete in the Premier League as well. I think there's been a lot of positive in terms of the resilience we show today. In a game that is not perfect, coming here and being able to win 1-0 in a tight, tricky game, I think that's huge quality. And we've also done that a few times in the season. And we just need to keep building small layers every single game. Even though your players have thrown a lot at this and got you through this one today, how do you see the picture in January in terms of what you need?

26:08The conversations will be starting with the window imminently opening now to get to that consistent level that you are talking about so often every three to four days reaching those levels that you need. Of course the window will open and we will be in the market and see if there's anything we can do but I need to be something where we clearly think it can improve the team. If not, rather want to wait but we will be out there. There are reports I will stress reports this stage that Fabio Paratici is being linked with a move away from the club I just wonder whether you can say with any certainty at this point that he will still be involved as we go into January.

26:50There's a lot of rumors out there about staff members players everything so as long as there's rumors you know like you know me very well then I'm not commenting on any of these players we want to we are linked to or players you want to sell then so that's very simple all right thanks for your time today and well done thank you thank you thank you well tottenham didn't quite park the bus against crystal palace but they certainly did protect their lead once they went in front through through archie gray and there has been some criticism of the way that that thomas frank sets his teams up particularly at home for tottenham and less so what you know at selhurst park but if they are going to maybe go into the market in in january and and kind of cover for some of the players particularly the attacking ones that are out injured at the moment.

27:32Does it make it a more difficult scenario if someone like Fabio Paratici is either moving or in the process of moving? Just the uncertainty of it. Well, I think, you know, sometimes a move like that has always, may have been kind of done already. You know, I sense that they've got a team that's doing the transfers probably without him. It looks like a new regime at Spurs. Daniel Leeds is obviously gone. And I think this new regime want to make a statement. And I think in January, that's a possibility that could happen. So the technical director... Has he gone on Bosman? Pardon? Yeah, but the technical director...

28:12There was a time where directors of football and technical directors... Well, technical directors... Yeah, the glamour role in football. Very much a vote. Very much a vote, you know, and they're part of the Premier League. And in fact, why we have so many foreign managers is because most of the technical directors are foreign. That's a normal route for them. And to be clear, we don't know yet whether this is actually happening. It's just the talk of that. And it's about whether or not Spurs do want to go into the transfer market. And Thomas Frank says they're looking for that. Is that the answer, do you think, for Tottenham?

28:45And look, they've got the win today, but to start picking up in terms of performances and playing a bit more on the front foot, a bit more in the way that Tottenham fans would like to see them. Yeah, that will get enabled as well by getting players fit. You know, I don't know. Obviously, James Madison's got a long-term one, which is a blow. I don't know what Kulicheski is, what the latest is with him. And I mention him all the time, but he's such a good player. He makes a difference. Solanke will make a difference to Tottenham when he comes back as well. So that is as important as buying players.

29:11Alan said it, and he knows it better than I do. The January transfer window is not that easy. Yes, you will get gems. You'll get your Virgil van Dijzen. You'll get your Suarez's that tied in January. It's amazing. But they're not that easy to find. And we still don't know what the future for Tottenham with the Lewis family, what kind of players they're going to be attracting, who they're going to sign. And as Alan says, is he maybe Parachicci part of the old regime? So does it really matter? So they'll have an idea of what they want. I'm sure they'll be speaking to the manager, Thomas Franks. I think if they were to look at addressing one part of the pitch, we'll be certainly going forward.

29:48Brendan Johnson's had a few mentions maybe he might be leaving and there'll be clubs that will come in for him because he's got a lot of pace than there is Southern in the play. He just needs to do a bit more for Tottenham. So I'll be fascinated to see what the next move will be. But the most important thing was getting that win today. Now they're four points behind Chelsea in fifth. They've got a run of fixtures that look, there's good possibilities for them. So they're not in a bad place. Yeah, they're coming up, Alan, against teams mostly that are struggling at the bottom of the table, or certainly not in a good moment at the moment in the case of Bournemouth.

30:19And then Manchester City at the end of that. Now, despite the fact that Manchester City is always a tough fixture, Tottenham are the team that City have lost to more in the Premier League than anyone else. They've won seven of the last 12 matches against them. So that looks, and with a return to Thomas Frank's Allside Brentford in there, that looks like a group of fixtures in which they can start to really add to their points. Well, absolutely. You know, sometimes when you get the fixture list through as a Premier League, it's scary. You know, when you're Spurs manager, you know, I look at that list that I would be quite confident of all those games leading up to Manchester City.

30:52You know, their home form has been a problem. And just going back to the point that Jamie was making about the offensive side of Spurs. If you're going to open up the pitch and you're going to kind of play a more Spurs game, not be so enclosed, open the pitch up, then offensively you've got to have more armoury than the opposition. and might be Thomas Frank feels that he hasn't got that armoury to open the pitch really up and kind of make it a little bit more kind of you have it, we have it. So it's very constructive at the minute, very tight. So the players are actually constrained to that. There's not much room for the game to flow.

31:30So that's part of his problem. But those fixtures, I don't know what you think, James, they look good fixtures to me. Well, the corresponding fixtures, I think they haven't played Sunderland yet. Bournemouth beaten convincingly early in the season but it's a different Bournemouth that we're seeing now and they'd won the rest of them so it's I think they're pictures that are pretty you know pretty good Man City are obviously in great form but probably their best performance of the season was at Man City early in the year where they were brilliant we were all waxing lyrical about how aggressive they were on the front foot we haven't quite hit those heights there's been a few performances Everton away was a good one obviously winning there and obviously today's a big three points for them but for Thomas Frank I think I guess is right now when you're in that position Alan and you're just trying to establish yourself and get that bit of belief and confidence in the team.

32:12It's just about winning games. It is, absolutely. And I think that was the criteria today. There was nothing about being flamboyant and kind of, you know, let's appease the fans, let's give them something to shout about. Let's just win the game. Get some confidence. Get some inner confidence as individuals. Like Archie Grayhoff coming back for that. He's going to grow, isn't he, to such an extent. And the senior players will as well off the back of a win. so it will do great things for Spurs but the waveform hasn't been their problem Thomas Frank is very good at that it's about bossing the game at home opening creators opening the game up a little bit and taking a few more risks and I think that's what Spurs fans really want to see But is that based on what we've seen of Thomas Frank and albeit at Brentford who will have different expectations from Tottenham perhaps is that what we know of Thomas Frank Is he a manager who can set a team up to play that style of football?

33:10Well, when I went from Reading to West Ham, I went from a team that was very much on the back foot to a team that was very much on the front foot. And it took me a while to kind of work out, when we're bossing games, how I was going to create chances. In the end, you kind of work it out. If I'm honest, when I look at him, I see him going through that process. I think he's bright enough to understand how to do that. and, you know, there are certain games at Brentford where you are dominating some, you know, cup games, etc., etc. So it's not like it's immune to it, but you need a real kind of plan of what that looks like and what Archie was sort of hinting there about on the training ground, what we're learning, we're learning all the time.

33:54That's the process you've got to go through. A lot of information incoming at Tottenham and the fans are looking to see that in terms of performances, but they did get the result today. against a Crystal Palace side who've had a great calendar year, but have struggled a little bit of late over the last five matches without the win. We'll hear what Oliver Glasner made of today's match next.

34:21Hi there, Sumi Goulden here, the host of the Essential EFL podcast from Sky Sports. We're well into the swing of the season now, and the action is hotting up nicely across the Championship League One and League Two. On the pod, I chat with the Sky Sports EFL experts every week about the latest games and big talking points from across all three leagues. So if you're a fan of an EFL club or if you just want to keep up to date with what's going on in the Football League, search for Essential EFL and give us a follow.

34:55This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. let's get more analysis of the game and return to the studio in crystal palace's eighth game of december it's now been five games without a win after losing one nil against tottenham here's oliver glasner with emma saunders well oliver you were cutting a very frustrated figure in that dugout this afternoon how do you sum up the game and what is ultimately a defeat. Yes, it feels very disappointing and frustrating because for me it was a game like you can never lose, but we lost and it's a little bit of the story of this year. We are constantly underperforming in the chances we create and how many goals we score.

35:42Yes, we have to agree that we are now struggling with scoring goals. When you see who is scoring, very often it's from a set place, our defenders and our attackers. if we have chances we are missing them and that's then we get punished by a set play so it's a little bit because I can't remember that that we dominated Tottenham like we did today in many parts of the game but at the end where the game is decided in the box we were not good enough we did we right at the moment we have a little bit of lack of finishing quality but then it's now to support the players to encourage them and because I see all the effort I see all the structure in the game looks nice so we're getting into the right areas but then it's just missing the goal or taking a wrong decision.

36:25I can't remember how often we have been in the dangerous areas, but it looks like the closer we come to the goal, the more nervous we get, the more wrong decisions we take, and that's why we lost the game at the end. Yeah, 12 shots in the end today. You mentioned quality of finishing there. Do you feel that's the trend maybe across these recent games that is holding you back in front of goal? Is that the main factor? Yes, absolutely. I think we're the team most or mainly underperforming from XG to goals. We score every single game. We are higher than the opposition, but now we lost all the games, even against City, and we don't give them a lot, and then we get punished by set plays.

37:06And on the other side, a few hours know it's tough right at the moment to score goals even when we create the chances, and there were a lot of them. and even many times we were in really nice areas where we just didn't get the finish. And yeah, that's a little bit frustrating. But again, it's nobody to blame because I see all the effort and everybody tries his best. And now it's to support the players because, of course, they feel the same. And they are also disappointed, they are frustrated. And so the good thing is that the structure and the way we are playing and the way we are defending is really good.

37:44but yes we have to improve in how we defend our set-piece and we have to definitely improve in the final third to score more goals. You mentioned it there, another set-piece goal conceded. This is an area that you have been raising concerns about particularly after that Leeds defeat. How do you see that when you've conceded today? Of course we're disappointed but again we just lost one point because if you don't score you can't win.

38:14We also know that we are missing a few players who are always responsible for how we create our chances in scoring goals. They are with Danny Munoz, with Saris, with Kamada. It looks like right now that we are struggling. But again, when I see the way we are playing and when I see the effort, when I see the belief right until the end, then I'm looking forward very positively. and yes, then we will get these results. I think everybody felt it's a game you can't lose, but we lost and it's not the first one. So that's what we have definitely to improve. Appreciate your time. Thank you. Thank you.

38:49Thank you. So this was Crystal Palace's eighth game of December. They've averaged playing a game pretty much every three days since December the 3rd. Their longest gap between games, five days from that Arsenal one to today, and they haven't had a gap of five days since the end of December. They've been coming thick and fast, these matches, and he's got five players who've started every Premier League game so far this season. He's not really changing things up in the course of the 90 minutes, he will say, because he doesn't have those options. Is that backed up when you look at the squad, you look at who was on the bench, for example, today?

39:30Well, let's just go back to that run of games because when you're in Europe and you haven't got a squad that's big enough, then your sports science energy levels, the ratios of all your players, they really go down. It's really significant. You're not going to have that detail because you're not going to be allowed it, but internally you do. So you know the players are tired. You understand it. So you have to move the squad around a little bit. He hasn't got a lot of room in that squad to move around. And when he has done it, he's come a bit of a copper in terms of results. So I think he's reluctant to make changes.

40:05I think he knows they're tired. He's kind of trying to make a game plan that's going to work with the energy levels alone. I certainly had it at Newcastle when we went into Europe. It was a real problem. Not so much the European game. It was the Premier League game after it, after the travel, after the excitement of that competition to come to a Premier League game and get to that level again. their expected goals and everything else is quite good. They just can't find the moment. And sometimes it might be like just the tiredness of the team a little bit. And this isn't about, you know, playing a tiny violin and asking people to feel sorry for the players.

40:45This is explaining why there is a drop off in their performance levels. And one of the things that you mentioned there is their XG, where they are underperforming by just over eight. So they should have scored eight more goals from the chances they've created this season than they have. Tottenham, by contrast, incidentally, at nearly 10 more goals scored than you would expect from the chances that they're creating. So is that encouraging in the sense that they're creating the chances? Or is it worrying? Because Will Hughes said in his interview with Emma earlier, we're not ruthless enough in front of goals.

41:21So is that the pattern? or is the pattern that they're creating the opportunities? Well, firstly, if you ask any Crystal Palace player, sorry, fan at the moment, they'll all say the same thing. We're creating chances, we can't seem to take them. There's so many chances. I mean, the striker is a little bit hitting Miss Mateta and I think he is part of the problem, if I'm honest, at the moment. He can't seem to find a goal, no matter what he does. I think the bottom line is that's always a good stat, actually, for when you go into the director's box, because usually that would be something to put against your name.

41:53You say, oh, their expected goals is really low. The team, we're never going to win today. They can't say that to Oliver, you know. So he has the defence of that. But it's still a problem. That isn't a solution. It's a problem. You've got to correct that. So the goals need to come in. Maybe he needs to arrest the striker. Maybe he needs to change the way they attack a little bit. Yeah, they're missing vital players. But just purely from a management's point of view, So how important is it that Oliver Glass has done a great work and Donny Areola is a good example as well. He's all of a sudden on a bit of a difficult run.

42:28How important for a manager is, purely from an individual point of view, is striking well the iron's hot in terms of you don't want to finish the season poorly. You want to keep the momentum in your name because it can quickly go the other way, can't it? It can. And not just, you know, not to get a move to a bigger club, you know, even internally for the club that you're at to maybe secure a new contract. and so that the vision that you have for the club you can take forward. Sometimes the club are very quiet with you about a new contract. You know, you can't seem to get an answer out of them.

42:58So you need your flag at the top all the time. And when that is there, you want to push for it. Now, at the moment, Oliver's contract is running out in the summer. He's done an incredible job at Crystal Palace. So I think he's, you know, he's not committing to a new contract. So it's a problem for Crystal Palace. I'm sure they're pushing him, you know. What an answer. and he's elite and only they're elite managers they're very few and far between but it doesn't take long for people to go okay well he's on a bit of a bad run as you become a bad manager you don't become a bad manager overnight but sometimes your luck or your performances or players are out of form you pick up injuries at the wrong time you get a player that goes to AFCON the whole dynamic changes then Alan doesn't it?

43:37But the clubs know that they've got players going to AFCON I mean they know that that's coming when they sign the player unless you've got someone you know like we saw earlier on with Simon Odingor who isn't picked for Cote d 'Ivoire and hasn't gone over. But in terms of trying to operate in the January transfer window, if you've got a manager who they know that the contract's going to be up in the summer, if you've got players where you know the contract's going to be up in the summer, how much more difficult does it make it? We talked about maybe Fabio Paratici, should he leave Spurs, if that does happen?

44:09It might not make too much difference because the structure might already be there. but if it's the manager and if it's key players does that make a difference? Well it will in the conversations you have with the agent and the player of course because sometimes and I've had it myself the agent or the player might say are you going to stay you know are you there are you committed how long are you there and but sometimes that's a bit tokenish because they you know they're going to come anyway with the financial demands are met for example. I think particularly at Crystal Palace, I think the players that they go for, I don't think the manager's that key, if I'm honest, but it does play a role.

44:46And I think particularly the success they've had, if I was an agent going there with a player, I would ask that question, are you going to stay? What's your intentions? Etc. You might not get the answer, but you'd put the question. I think January can be a good window. In Newcastle, we had an outstanding January window. It turned our season. We put Suzuki, Suzoko in and Debussy from France. It was massive for us and it changed our season. So, it can be a great window. So, you mustn't eliminate it because people say, you know, oh, it's tough in that window. You've got to be ready. You've got to be ready.

45:21And we all know, I think the world knows that football, Semenyo is available, you know, at a fee. If I was a Tottenham director, I would certainly be looking at him. That's one the Tottenham fans would like to see, I'm sure. it'd be great. Alan, Jamie, thank you very much for your company. lovely spending the day with you today.
