In short

Bournemouth beat Liverpool 3-2 at the Vitality Stadium with a last-kick winner, after being 2-0 down. The episode focuses on the dramatic comeback, the stoppage-time winner from Amin Adli, and the tactical/mental themes: Bournemouth’s relentless pressing and belief, and Liverpool’s late-game fragility. Key claims include that Bournemouth weren’t playing a low block, that the wind affected long balls and the stoppage-time sequence, and that Liverpool’s handling of an injured Joe Gomez (and substitutions/ball-out-of-play decisions) was costly.

Notable examples

Van Dijk’s first-half goal to make it 2-1; a second-half free kick by Samoslai to set up; Bournemouth’s equaliser and then Adli’s decisive finish from a long throw.

Guests

Alex Scott (Bournemouth midfielder; England U21 Euros winner; joined from Bristol City; discusses pressing, running, and his England call-up) and Emma Saunders interviews plus manager/players including Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool captain) and Arne Slot (Liverpool manager).

0:06This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Thanks for joining us. Liverpool were on the road on Saturday evening as they headed south to play Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. Here's how the game finished.

0:23What a way for Bournemouth to win it And they have won it with the last kick of the game Amin Adli is the hero for Bournemouth A hard-fought victory in which it paid off that they kept going for the victory Even after Liverpool had got themselves back into this match the first half lead that they established was a sign of things to come and Doni Irola as a manager gets his first win against Liverpool and for the second season running here Bournemouth have beaten the reigning champions they did it to Manchester City last year they've done it to Liverpool this year in the most dramatic circumstances Arna Slott is absolutely fuming about it conceding that goal in stoppage time his team had come back from two down Eben Nielsen and Jimenez having given Bournemouth the lead Van Dijk at the end of the first half and Samoslai from a free kick played to him in the second half but the final word belonged to Amin Adli and for Bournemouth it is sheer delight for the broken champions it is a seventh Premier League defeat of the season.

1:47So successive home wins now for Iriola's team in what had otherwise been a lean spell for them. What a night. Bournemouth 3, Liverpool 2. Jamie, incredible scenes at the Vitality Stadium. It's one hell of a way to win a game of football, particularly for Bournemouth's side, who, while the performances may have been there, have not been getting the results. No, absolutely. As he said before, again, this game, it could be wild, this one, because of the weather and everything that could contribute to this kind of game. But what an effort they put in today. That performance in Liverpool pretty much sums up their whole season.

2:26It's almost hard to identify with the side that we watched last year, with the pace, the energy they play with, the way they're defending right now, how passive they are in possession. And for this Bournemouth side to play in that manner they did, this wasn't a low block tonight. This wasn't a board team sitting back. This was just a team. We just wanted it a little bit more a bit more energy They knew everything they had to do they could have won with an even in some chance they didn't but they kept persevering they showed Unbelievable endeavor and attitude to get that win and I have to say in terms of not possession I think in terms of just looking like a threat going forward Bournemouth deserve that one today What does it tell you about Bournemouth as a team and also Liverpool as an opponent, that Bournemouth instead of protecting a draw when they've been on a rocky run of form go for the winner that late on in the game?

3:16It's not in the manager's blood to sit back like Jamie said there, it wasn't a low block at all that Bournemouth presented today, it was an attacking front footer team full of energy like Jamie said the attitude was spot on and I think the belief in everything was there, you can see the scenes at the end the players and the manager connecting with the fans. This is a team where Iriol and the way that he's transformed this team, yes they're probably not where they want to be in the table, but beating the champions in that manner, in that capacity, they'll have so much belief moving forwards from that.

3:43New players coming in, they're in a good place and I'm sure they'll just continue to kick on. The heartbreak of Brighton equalising on Monday Night Football and then this, it just shows you the emotion of the game. The crowd stuck with them, they kept going they threw balls into the box at times, it wasn't pretty. They've lost Antoine Semenyo but they kept going tonight unbelievable result for them especially with West Ham scoring you know now they give themselves a nice little break between the you know of the back three and they can start to the bottom three sorry and they can start to look forward he was magnificent today Scott in midfield they played with a two in there against Liverpool three and I thought they worked their socks off they kept going they created opportunities and they ran a marathon for those fans today so unbelievable result for them as you say Jamie it's not just the fact that they've beaten the reigning champions.

4:28It's not just the fact that they get that last gasp winner in that game, having been pegged back from 2-0 up in the match. It also has real practical ramifications in terms of what it does to the table, because earlier on, results didn't necessarily go their way, because West Ham got that 3-1 victory against Sunderland. Burnley got a 2-0 draw against Tottenham. A late, late goal in that one, and a late goal, a winner this time, Harry Wilson for Fulham and their 2-1 win over Brighton. Manchester City with a 2-0 win against Wolves. And you can see all of today's goals on the Sky Sports app. Best way to get there, as always, is to scan the QR code that you can see on the screen right now.

5:10And let's just have a look at the significance of that late winner for Bournemouth at the bottom of the table. It takes them up into 13th place, but they are 10 points comfortably above the bottom three. even as it looked like West Ham were starting to claw their way back into the mix. And there they are, still are, only two points off Nottingham Forest to play tomorrow. Burnley with a point takes them on to 15, but they're still seven points from safety.

5:39And for now, Liverpool come away with nothing from that game. They do still stay in fourth place, but Manchester United yet to play this weekend. they could catch them and overtake them, as too could Chelsea.

5:57Now one last spling at it. Should be it after this throw. Brought in by Hill and there's danger here. Could go anywhere. It's gone in the Liverpool goal! Bournemouth have won it late on!

6:16The win for Bournemouth, another defeat for Liverpool, their seventh of this campaign. Here's the captain with Emma Saunders. Well, Virgil, having fought so hard to get back to 2-2, just how disappointing is it to come away with nothing in the end? Very disappointed. Yeah, last minute of the game. Very tough to take. but like you said we worked very hard second half especially to get back in the game and obviously at times we were open as well obviously on the counter because we're trying to push for the winner but yeah to concede that late is very disappointing You look to be venting frustrations with the officials at the end there what was being said?

7:04Obviously what I felt on that pitch was that I was clearly blocked but obviously the ref and the VAR don't give it and that's something we don't have to accept but in my opinion I was blocked but listen I can stand here and say should it not be given by this given and it is what it is I suppose whilst there was a huge positive that you did manage to come back to 2-2 ultimately I suppose you'll reflect that you gave yourselves too much to do at 2-0 down how do you make sense of that seven minutes where Bournemouth went to a head? Well, the first goal, I think it was a difficult ball to judge during the circumstances.

7:47The win was very tricky. I think you saw it especially when we played long balls and that side, it was very difficult to judge. So to concede that one is obviously it's not an issue but obviously it doesn't because I think we controlled the game quite well before that and then obviously when we were with 10 men, you can argue that you have to maybe kick the ball out or not. But yeah, to concede that two goals in a short period is obviously not good at all. But I think the goal I scored before halftime was very important in terms of getting that momentum and the feeling for the second half back.

8:24And I think we showed the second half, we worked so hard to get back into the game with a great free kick. I think we had some good opportunities as well. But in the end, the throw and the cost us. You mentioned there perhaps the indecision as to whether or not Alisson should have kicked the ball out when Joe Gomez was injured. It's not an Alisson, I think, as a team. Obviously, after a game or after a moment like that, it's easy to say, oh, yeah, you should have done this or that. Where do you feel perhaps responsibility should lie? Is it from your manager? Is it as a team you should be communicating more amongst yourselves?

9:01It is just a very split second. I think now it's easy to discuss this and say you should have done this and that. I know that's what will happen. We decided to keep the ball because we had the possession and eventually they had it. Obviously a good ball from them in behind. Unfortunately for us, the goal we conceded. Having got back into the game, so many of those teams directly below you trying to get a Champions League place played tomorrow. Does it feel like a missed opportunity? Losing never feels good, especially as a Liverpool player. This season we're trying to find consistency. We had a fantastic performance midweek and we were trying to do that today as well.

9:45Very demanding game, of course, under the circumstances, the intensity that obviously Bournemouth bring anyway. So, yeah, it's a tough one to take. but Wednesday will be another game and we go home now and focus on that one. I suppose it's been a week hasn't it where the pendulum has swung so much with the disappointment after Burnley you mentioned there the highs of Marseille and then disappointment here today is it testing you as a group that sort of togetherness keeping in the right direction? Well I don't think there's any question about our togetherness but the consistency that we're looking for that's something still needs to be found.

10:27And that's the reality. I think there was a lot of praise of our performances and a lot of individual praises. And we know how it works. And three days later, you lose a game like we did today and then the other side of the world comes out. So that's something we have to deal with. But we want to perform, we want to win games. And today it didn't happen, unfortunately. Appreciate your time. Thank you. Thank you very much.

10:55Well, it's a difficult interview for Virgil van Dijk to give. We're struggling to kind of pinpoint exactly where things were going wrong. He did say, look, the referee sees it how he sees it. He gives what he gives and we have to accept it. But he did feel he was blocked for the winning goal for Bournemouth. Did either of you spot that? Well, he was blocked. He was fouled, but he was fouled by his own player. That's the problem. Curtis Jones, Virgil van Dijk, you can just see him here. Virgil van Dijk, the ball was starting to launch balls into the box with his long throwing by Hill. Virgil's in a decent position there.

11:27He's got Unal there and then Sanessi is another player that's with Gravenberch. But as that ball then comes in and it's an incredible throw, you can see he gets it to a long area there. Virgil goes to attack it. But I just want to just take it back because I show you if I slow it up, as he goes to win that ball now, you can see there, number 17, Curtis Jones, he just trips over him. Watch Virgil's right foot as he goes to jump. There, he catches his own man, then can't get the header. Then it all becomes about Adli. He's brilliant. Look how alive he is here. Gets the first one in. Then he gets the second one.

12:02He's the only one that's alive to this situation. You know, you can see it there. He wins that first. There's no right, he's not a big player, but he's got desire. Then he goes to the next one. Sanessi does great. Obviously, it's a huge mess by Alisson there. And somehow he creeps that into the corner, agonising for Liverpool. but for Bournemouth, pure ecstasy. And you can see it from the players, from Christie and everybody that are running off. What a moment for them. It was a really huge moment for Bournemouth, particularly because they've come into this. One win in their last 14 in all competitions before this game.

12:35This is the kind of result that can really drive them on, isn't it? It can certainly kickstart their form, you know, in terms of the belief that they showed from minute zero to minute 94 this evening. I thought they had that belief. and I think if any team was going to go on and win this game, it was going to be Bournemouth. They had that chance earlier on. Evan Nilsson, you know, just sliced it wide beyond Alisson that should have hit the back of the net, but they still believed they would get another one and they got it. And that moment there, I think it epitomises the game. I think Hill had the opportunity to start launching the ball into the box off his long throw-ins and I think the warning signs were there for Liverpool that something's coming.

13:09And then they end up getting their goal from a long throw-in, which was poor organisation from Liverpool's perspective. Van Dijk was the only player in Liverpool's back four who started the game, who finished it. They had three other changes in the back line, which you could, you know, raise attention to. But the fact is, the long ball's come in, they haven't dealt with it, and Bournemouth have got their reward. Bournemouth got their reward. They take all three points. It's an important one in terms of the table, Jamie. They weren't in relegation danger, but maybe just having a look over their shoulder.

13:38I'd say at this point, you're having a glance. You're not necessarily looking, but you're just glancing. But I said it before the show, This side has too much quality, too many good players. They've got a genius of a manager who I'm such a big fan of. And they've got players of real quality. And we're going to talk to one right now, Kelly. We are indeed. Alex Scott joins us live now from the Vitality. Alex, thanks so much for joining us. Congratulations on the win. That's some way to win a game, isn't it? Yeah, no, it's unbelievable. I think it was such a hard game. And it always is in the Premier League, whoever you're playing.

14:08And Liverpool are topside and, you know, they really took it to us there in the second half. and we dug deep and got that goal at the end. I think you could see some of the faces, the manager and obviously for all the fans as well, it was a massive moment. The bravery to keep pushing for that winner late on in the game, where did that come from? Is that something that's kind of built into the side? Does it come from the manager? Is that the word from the bench? Yeah, I think you're spot on. I think we pride ourselves on that, pressing non-stop until the final whistle and we got our rewards there.

14:40Like I said, it's tough and we've had a, you know, a tough run of games, extra time at Newcastle. And there's been a lot of tough fought games, especially Brighton as well. So it's been hard and we've had to dig in, but I think that's what this club's all about. The manager really puts that into our players and we've got to work non-stop for this manager and for these fans. So we got our reward at the end there and it comes from us being there to the final minute. Alex, Jamie, Redknapp, congratulations, mate. Amazing win. I mean, we've just seen so many emotion here. We can see your manager. He's normally quite mild-mannered, but he was loving that one.

15:12Big moment for you and the team. I enjoyed your performance today and I felt obviously slight tweak in the formation. Today with you and Cookie in midfield, it made it a bit more difficult. You know, you had two against the three a lot of the time because you played obviously Kruppi and Eva Nilsson. You had to, I bet your running stats were high today. Yeah, I think they will be. You know, yeah, you're spot on it. It was really tough today. the way they set up you know Soboslai, McAllister Gravenberg and Wurtz as well there was almost four of them in the middle of there non-stop and you know it's tougher for me and Lou and obviously Kruppi as well but you know the way we set up as well the centre-halves need to jump as well but when you've got top quality players like Wurtz and Soboslai you never really know what they're going to do, they have that freedom to go wherever they want and I think in the second half it definitely worked a lot more for them but yeah we really dug in a good defending and good from Petro as well.

16:09So, you know, it was a tough game, but I enjoy playing with Lewin there. I know how good he is defensively. Obviously, we've got Tyler as well. He's unfortunately injured, but there's so many players that can step into that role. So playing next to them and obviously Kruppi as a 10, you can come up with magic non-stop. So it makes my job a lot easier when I've got Lew there and Kruppi in front. Well, it doesn't sound easy. I've just been told by our great stats guys at Sky that you ran the most today, certainly in your team. And I think that summed it up because in your midfield, you had tremendous energy.

16:37I want to talk purely about you individually. You've had a great season. You broke into that England squad as well. What does that mean to you as a young player that obviously came from Bristol City? Your career's gone from strength to strength. You must be so happy you made this move. Yeah, of course, it's been great. I really enjoy my time here. I think it's been tough. The first two seasons I was here, I had a lot of injuries and it was hard to get rhythm with my game and I wasn't playing as many minutes as obviously I wanted to. So it's been hard and I've had to almost bide my time a little bit.

17:07But now this season, I came off winning the under-21 Euros with England and that gave me a lot of confidence going into the season. I think since then, the managers definitely trusted me. I've played the majority of the game, so obviously grateful to him and everyone at the club for giving me the chance. I'm playing probably my best footballer at the minute. I got my call up at the end of last year, but it's a long way to go. I've got to keep working hard, keep playing at this level, keep performing. Fingers crossed I maybe get another call in March, you never know. but that's down to me to keep working hard and keep playing well in this division.

17:38Alex, speaking of working hard, you had a big part to play in the opening goal, your forward running behind. Was that something that you identified pre-game or is that just what you do because you're so good at running and beyond? I think it's more instinct. I probably don't do it enough, to be honest. As a number eight, it's picking when to come to feet and when to spin and behind. I think that one there, I probably would have left it if it didn't hit me in the face and just taken the corner. but I feel like I had to do something and thankfully Eva was there to finish it off but I know how good Marcus is you see here he does that ball so many times in a game and it's down to us forward players to be in the right position to pick the scraps up and yeah you see it's come off my face I probably would have left it if it didn't and taken the corner but yeah happy to get an assist you know I don't get enough of them or I don't get enough goals but you know I've got to try and work hard in training and get in those positions more because I know I can definitely add that to my game Did the wind play a factor in the ball holding up in the air, do you think?

18:34I think so, yeah. I think it made it more difficult for Virgil there to deal with it. I think the conditions were tough out there today. The first half we were playing into the wind and second half with the wind. So, yeah, it was tough. And like you said, I think it definitely played a part in that goal. For him, I reckon it just stopped in the air a little bit. But I was thankfully there to make something of it. and obviously happy to get the goal there early on. It's obviously a win that feels good, but it's also a win that has real practical ramifications. We were talking about the table before you joined us and saying that while Bournemouth never really looked in danger, it was maybe just in terms of results starting to get to the stage where there might have been a little bit of a cause for concern.

19:20But that's seven points now from the last three and it's looking very comfortable in the table. Yeah, and there was a point we spoke about. We were honest about it and we had to come to the realisation that we probably were in a bit of a relegation fight at some point. I think after maybe the Brentford game, we had a tough run of fixtures, I think Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham. So, you know, with those sort of fixtures, it's tough to pick up points. I think we've got through them pretty well. A point at Chelsea and beating Spurs, drawing to Brighton. So, you know, we've got some points out of those games.

19:52But yeah, I think now we're a little bit more comfortable. But, you know, the job's never done. And the team's also picked up points this weekend. So there's always people fighting below us. And, you know, we've got to be on our toes and win as many games as possible. It's been really good talking to you. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you, guys. Have a good evening. Congratulations on the win as well. He talks really well about what, you know, the manager wants Bournemouth to do, what the manager asks him to do and sort of gives us a real insight into how they set up. And apart from anything else, the mentality.

20:24Yeah, absolutely. And purely individually. I mean, what Bournemouth do, they're brilliant at it. They recruit great players and they sell them on. Semenya, great example. I wouldn't be surprised in a couple of years' time if they'll have a contingency player for someone like him. Right, where's the next one of his quality? They'll bring him in because there'll be clubs looking at him. He runs so much. He's got great energy. He assists. He actually has to make more assists. I will admit that. But in terms of what he brings and that first contact, getting after people, it's infectious for everybody else in that team.

20:52I'm a really big fan of his and he deserves everything that's coming his way at the moment. I'm delighted for him because, as I say, it was not easy for him, but when he first came, he had a lot of injuries, but now he's very settled. The manager trusts him, like he said. And yeah, a really big performance from him and his team. And he talked about playing in that number eight position, but picking those moments when he wants to get in behind. That's what you asked him about, Izzy, and he timed it perfectly in this game. Yeah, he did. He timed it perfectly. And I think that they used the win to their advantage in the first half.

21:20The ball was holding up. They wanted to put the centre-backs for Liverpool under pressure. And I think, you know, Jamie's spot on in terms of his work rate, his mindset. But he's now got competition as well with Tork coming in in the January transfer window, who sounds like he's an exciting prospect. But you can just see here on the first goal, the forward run and being beyond. And I think the centre-backs for Bournemouth had such a big influence on the game today. This is Sinesi with the ball over. Now, it's nothing special, but Alex Scott just doesn't give up. And I just think it epitomises the belief in this Bournemouth side.

21:49And I think Evan Ilsen takes it so well. But you can just watch it here again. The way that the ball just drops, the ball forward I think it's got a wonderful pace on it I was just going to highlight him for you there Izzy because he makes a good run there's a big gap for him and he anticipates it doesn't he he just runs off McAllister's shoulder he then becomes Virgil van Dijk's player the ball holds up in the wind van Dijk doesn't clear it and again just that little glance back into the inside of the box we can see a better angle of it here yes he almost gets a little bit fortuitous the way it sort of bounces off his face but he gets that look because he makes the run puts it into a really good area for Evan Nielsen and that connection between those two there.

22:24It's like he knows he's going to be there. They've got that hunger, that instinct, and that's what got Bournemouth off the mark. And this obviously has ramifications for what happens next as well, Kelly. You can see here, good finish by Ivan Nilsson. He anticipates it. Joe Gomez goes clashing into his goalkeeper. Now, you can see it's a nasty injury. He's in trouble. He's not going to be probably playing on in that. You give him maybe a minute, two, then you maybe try to make a substitution. This took seven minutes before Liverpool decided to make a substitution. I think from a team... In which time Gomez wasn't on the pitch.

22:57On the pitch. And then they obviously end up conceding that second goal. I find it staggering in this day and age that you're going to have a situation like that. Now, we had to go through it a few times because we obviously want to check, give Liverpool the benefit of the doubt. Have they got an opportunity to kick it out? Have they got an opportunity? Has there been a free kick? Has the manager spoken to the players, made this a priority for everyone? because I think sometimes I don't want to just criticise the manager or the backroom staff. I think sometimes as a player, you take responsibility.

23:27You realise you've got 10 men. Gravenberg just had to drop into the back four. What can we do about this? Now, I'm just going to give you sort of how this unfolded. Now, you can see Joe Gomez is walking off. There must be dialogue. This doctor physio will be able to talk to the staff and say, right, we've got a problem. This was one opportunity to get the ball out of play. Now, I'm watching the players here. You can see there's Arnaz slot. he's probably thinking, so I'll just take it back. Because nobody is actually saying, right, let's get the ball out of play. Let's get a centre-back on. We need Endo on this pitch so we can get back to 11 v 11.

24:01Joe Gomez isn't coming back on. They don't take this opportunity. You can see Arna Slott, he's saying, OK, maybe get the ball out of play. I don't know what he's saying. But anyway, it's not the point. Someone has to take this responsibility. That's not a quick free kick. So they give Liverpool an opportunity to get it away. Now they're making a substitution. Right, so Arna Slott is saying to his players, get this ball out of play. The guy here who's telling him, giving him instructions, do not worry about instructions right now. Just get him on the pitch. This isn't like you're making a substitution, a tactical one, where you've got 11 v 11 at the moment.

24:32You've got 10 men on. This is paramount importance that you get him on to level this game up. And whenever you get an opportunity, you then change it. Get your gear off, get on the pitch, mate. Bear in mind that Gomez is already off the pitch with the doctor. And Endo's still got his kit on. Just for balance, to reiterate what Virgil van Dijk said, which is they had the ball, they felt they had control of the game and maybe there was potentially a bit more time. I'm not having that, Kelly. I'm not. Not when you've got 10 men. You've never got control. And the control come, they end up conceding the goal from it.

25:02They get another opportunity. This time, Alisson, he knows he's got Graven Birch in there. You can see the manager, bottom corner, he's telling him to kick the ball out of play. He doesn't. He decides to go the other way. You don't have control with 10 men, especially at Bournemouth. This isn't like they're just sitting back. They are on you. They're trying to win the ball back. They should have made this substitution. Seven minutes. I use the words amateurish at half-time. I think it is. It's not good enough. And that comes as a consequence because just before they make the substitution, this then happens.

25:32Now, Liverpool end up with two up front. You can see Salah and Wurz. Now, I would like to see one of them drop back in. Now, I'm just going to stop it just here because now you've got your back four. You've got Graven Wurz. You've got Virgil van Dijk. Soberslai sort of come in there. And Milos Kerkhez. Now he defends awfully for this goal. Really good bit of play. You talked about Sanessi having a great bit of play as a centre-back as well. This time it's Hill. Really good. He comes forward. You can see Jimenez, that's right, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. Jimenez is making a really good run. His body position is really wrong, Milos Kerkes.

26:03He doesn't get himself in the right position to stop this pass. Virgil van Dijk drops too deep as well. Now, this is not, you are not comfortable. You've got 11 men on. Endo might have been the other centre-back. Brilliant finish. Great piece of play from Bournemouth. but this is other thing I want to just look look at Virgil van Dijk he then drops just take that back a little bit he's just sort of lead centre back he should be commanding that if he pushes up one two yards gets level with Milos Kerkes Graven Birch and Frimpong he plays him offside he doesn't he drops back to he almost covers himself there you can see that the back there Jimenez makes a really good run poor I don't like his body position one bit there but a great pass and a really good finish but that is not comfortable and here all the time and the highlight again There's your man there trying to get on the pitch.

26:48He should have been on four minutes ago, Kelly. If that happens, this doesn't, none of this happens. We won't even be showing this goal. Is he going to go? What's happened to him? Oh, here we go, here we go. From Bournemouth's point of view, brilliant. Great pass from Hill. That's what you want, the centre-backs to step in and play passes like that as well, Izzy. And Jimenez, who normally play right back, he's asked, you know, sorry, Rayola's asked him to play higher up in the game because that's a position where Bournemouth are struggling to feel players at the moment. You know, they've got seven injuries out at the moment.

27:18You can see here he's on side, but times has run to perfection. But that's so reassuring for Iriola to know that those three players, Evan Nilsson, Jimenez and Adley, have all got on the score sheet today. And they're all players that are playing in that forward line for Bournemouth, sort of in a makeshift fashion, but they've proven today they can do it. Jamie, what does that result do, do you think, for Bournemouth? I know we talked about what it does in terms of the table, but in terms of what happens next for them, because they will have had confidence in their performances. They will have had faith in the manager who was getting absolute plaudits at the start of the season.

27:50At one stage, Bournemouth were in second place in the table. What can they do from here on in with that result? It's a great question. They've had two really good home wins now against Tottenham and obviously Liverpool. Probably you say on paper a good point at Brighton, but when you're winning one meal with a couple of minutes to go, you want to hang on. So I think they'll be delighted. You know, it was a good performance today, amazing effort. And only we'll know he needs players in to help him as well. They've obviously got a couple in the pipeline. They've signed one, maybe get two or three in with their good recruitment.

28:21And that will certainly help because they need a few bodies because they are running on empty to a certain extent. Do they look like a relatively favourable run of fixtures? Yeah, when you look at them, you do think that. But you've got to understand Wolves obviously losing today to Manchester City. But they are starting to galvanise themselves here. Rob Edwards is starting to get momentum with the side. Obviously, Aston Villa, we know they're going to be very, very tough. But then you look at the other four fixtures below that and you think that if you're Bournemouth going into that game with the belief that Iola puts into his team, that they can go there and win.

28:51And I genuinely believe Bournemouth go into every single game in this league thinking they could win because they've got a system, they've got effective players and they've got a fantastic manager. And that manager joins us now live from the Vitality. Andoni, thank you so much for your time. We normally see you as quite a calm figure on the touchline, but you really went for it in terms of your celebrations this time. How much did you enjoy that victory?

29:15Andoni Iraola:I really enjoyed it. I think we needed this one and also, I think, 10 seconds before. As the fourth official, he told me, now it's over, this play, and it's over. So when you score and there is no option to receive another one, I think you enjoy it even more. Was there any part of you at 2-0, even though you'd been 2-0 up, that was thinking, just protect the point? Or was it always the intent to go for the winner? I think the goal from Van Dijk in the corner has hurt us. You know, because you are 2-0 down, you want to prepare the second half with two goals, and you know when you consider that goal, the second half is going to be long, because they are going to push.

29:53Andoni Iraola:I think we started probably playing better once we received the 2-2. We were kind of defending for me too much, and once you probably receive the 2-2, there is less things to lose and then I think we've started playing better. We had, I remember, a very clear chance from Evan Nilsson. We didn't score, but I think we've been better in the last minute. And only Jamie Redknapp, congratulations. You tweaked it a little bit. Obviously, you play a lot of different systems, but you're a very attacking system today with obviously Evan Nilsson and Kruppi, almost those split strikers, which put a huge emphasis on your two midfield players today.

30:28I thought they were magnificent for you. They ran marathons. You must be so proud of them.

30:33Andoni Iraola:Yes, I think Alex and Lou are doing an incredible middle part of the season. I think we are being able, between everyone, to keep, as you said, Junior, Kropi, Evan Nilsson, two strikers in a game where Liverpool put so many players inside and you need help from everywhere. I think wingers also did a really good job. Probably not playing completely to our style. I think we are finding ways to get in points lately, managing better, situations where we go a little bit higher and situations where we go a little bit deeper. You've obviously got a great long throwing as well in Hill. He can step in, make good passes, but this is obviously a massive part of the game.

31:16I want to show you this goal because I think it's really important and it gives you a... Considering you haven't got the biggest side in the world, you are so alive to every second ball.

31:25Andoni Iraola:Yes, I think it's... We know, everyone knows. We are probably the shortest team in the league. and we are struggling in defensive set plays. We consider today especially Bandai's goal, but offensively I think we are very lively, as you said. I think we are getting good numbers for our stature and to score in a goal like this in the very last second of the game it doesn't matter how, it's always lovely. Andoni, congratulations on the win. The area of the pitch, I think you're suffering a lot with injuries in the wide areas, you've had to adapt. How pleasing was it for you that the players in those positions today had a big contribution to the game?

32:07Andoni Iraola:Yes, as you said, right now, basically as a winger, we have Amin Adli. The others, I think we can adapt Alex Jimenez, even Alex Scott today finished playing wide. I think even Alex Todd, who has been training with us a couple of days, has to help us at the end. But it's a situation that also the club knows, We will try in this last week of the market to have some help there and also wait until Bruxy Tavernier especially recover. Andoni, you've obviously got great recruitment in the club. Are you working hard to find the next Antoine Semenyo? Not easy, eh? Not easy, eh? We take, even if it's not totally, totally 100 % Antoine Semenyo.

32:50Andoni Iraola:You're going to turn them into that kind of player, though. Yes, yes, yes. But it's true that we need help there outside. and it's a difficult market to sign because no one wants to lose a good player in January. But I trust the club. They've shown before that they know what they are doing and we have to be a little bit more patient. Andoni, a big win today that you and the players can celebrate. It's seven points in the last three games as well. Before that, it was a really difficult run for you. How hard was it to keep your nerve, to keep the players' confidence up in what they were doing and their belief?

33:25in what they were doing, and how pleasing is it to get the reward now?

33:30Andoni Iraola:This is the Premier League. At the end, the parties are so small. We've played even better games than today, and in this long run, I remember two draws against Chelsea, one against United, games that we've lost, Barnaby again here last second, even the other day against Brighton, stop at time, we concede, and sometimes it has to happen. It cannot always happen to the other side, and in this case, and especially against the Spurs, I think, are two wins that in our situations were very needed. Maybe balance is out that late equaliser by Brighton in that game as well. Yes, probably we were so disappointed.

34:08Andoni Iraola:Monday night, I think we were probably deserved more than even today or we were closer to the win than today, but you can celebrate it even more probably today. And Donny, thank you so much for sparing the time to talk to us. Congratulations on the win. Thank you very much. Congratulations. Thank you very much. Jamie, I know you've always been impressed with him as a manager. He was talking there about every game in the Premier League is difficult, but talked about how small the margins are in terms of getting the rewards for the performances they put in consistently. Yeah, absolutely. The margins have been tough for him.

34:44And I said about him getting maybe he should be up for the May United job. A few people laughed at that. How can he be up for the May United job when he's lost so many games? People don't understand football. That's the sort of thing they would say. Because when you're doing as well as what he's done over the years at Bournemouth, continuously improving players, the style of play that they play with, they never give up, they run. It's a dream for any kind of club should be looking at him. But because he's had a bad run, and it has been a bad run, people quickly judge you and go, he's not a good manager anymore.

35:13This is an elite manager. I've watched Bournemouth closer than probably any team over the last three or four years. And if you people can't see that, they don't know what they're talking about. He's had a bad run, but you just see him now and how that team will progress. I don't know what his future brings. At the end of the season, we're going to have a massive manager merry-go-round. It's going to be probably one of the biggest in years, I feel. And it'll be interesting to see what Bournemouth do. But in terms of people questioning him because he's been on a bad run, they don't understand football because he is an amazing coach, manager, and he improves players.

36:19Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game. Big performance and a big three points for Bournemouth. A last gasp winner to get the victory over the defending champions Liverpool, for whom life has not been a bowl of cherries so far this season. It's the seventh defeat of the season. Let's hear from the manager. Arna Slott is with Emma Saunders. Well, Arna, that must hurt you scratching your head a little bit at how you've come away from that empty-handed in the end.

36:56Andoni Iraola:Yeah, although we were 2-0 down, of course, at a certain point. But good comeback, although it didn't feel to me that we deserve to be 2-0 down at the moment we were. But players reacted really well. We came back to 2-2. And I think then in the end it was a very open game where both teams had their chances. They probably even more than us, which doesn't come as a complete surprise to me, knowing that we've played two days ago at Marseille. And for the last five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten games, we mainly have to play with the same players for the players we have available. and then sometimes a few of them could be in the end of the game a bit tired and I think that's what you could see today in the end as well.

37:39Yeah, I was going to ask, was it credit to Bournemouth's perseverance in the end or are you finding you're looking at yourselves a little bit? It also looked like you were a bit frustrated with the officials at the final whistle.

37:52Andoni Iraola:I think first of all we have to look at ourselves and in the end of the game it was more open. Both teams were trying to score a goal. they had better opportunities than us in the last 10 minutes. And then in the end, there was a long throw-in, which led for them to a goal. For me, four minutes of edit time was by far not enough. But in the end, that didn't matter because they scored, although maybe we could have had them two or three minutes, but this game should not have had four minutes of extra time. There was one free kick that already took two or three minutes. There were three arm moments.

38:22Andoni Iraola:There were substitutions. So that was why I said to them in extra time that four minutes wasn't enough. But yeah, they scored in extra time. Whilst you did find a way back to the 2-2, I suppose ultimately you gave yourselves a lot to do with those two Bournemouth goals inside seven minutes of that first half. How did you see that period of the game? It's difficult because I think the moment we conceded, there wasn't a thought in my head that that could happen. because I think we played a game where a lot of times our players were in a very promising position and it felt to me that it was waiting for the right moment and for the right execution and the right pass for us to score a goal.

39:04Andoni Iraola:And then we conceded one, which had to do a little bit with the adjustment of a long ball and the wind had impact on that ball. And then we went down to 10 men because of that goal. We were down to 10 and they scored their second and that was the only few minutes apart from the last 10 minutes, I think, where we had some problems with them. But, yeah, the result is another loss. So the trouble was you were a man down for that second goal and it looked like you were doing everything you could to gesture to the players, kick the ball out, let's get him on the pitch. How do you see it now? Is it with regret?

39:41Perhaps you didn't get the player on sooner. Is it the player's responsibility to kick the ball out?

39:46Andoni Iraola:You can play a player on sooner if the ball is not out of play. And the player was injured, Joe Gomez. The moment when he was injured, he said, I want to keep on trying, which is, I think, what most players try to do if they get a knock. But when we started playing, he said, no, no, it's not possible, I can't go back in. So, yeah, then it is the best thing. What can happen is go to 11 men as soon as possible. We had the chance because we were quite a long time in ball possession, but we kept it. And the moment we lost it, it took us a long time. We couldn't make a foul to get the ball out of play.

40:21Andoni Iraola:And then the ball went in when we were down to ten. Just finally, there's been a lot of headlines linking Andy Robertson with a move away to Spurs. I suppose you brought him on at half-time. Says you need him. I think I need all my players. But Robbo had to come in at half-time, in my opinion. I always knew that for Miloš another 90 minutes against a very intense bomb of sight was not a possibility for him. So I always knew I had to bring him in, but I had already had one substitution in the first half. Then you only have two moments left. So I thought let's bring Rabo in at half time to make sure that Miloš stays available for the rest of the season.

41:03Andoni Iraola:Because there are a lot of games to be played with the players available. I have to manage that as well because the last thing we could need right now is another injury. Appreciate your time today. Thank you. You're welcome.

41:19Jamie, what did you think of Arna Slott's comments? I always think he calls the game sometimes almost too honestly. You know, we've spoken to Steven Gerrard I thought was spot on and he actually agreed with him. He said, talking about low blocks and you're giving away almost, you know, too much information at times. Now he said they couldn't have got the player. I don't agree with that. That just doesn't make any sense to me. You've got to get him on at all costs. You know, you're 10 men. You're away from home. You've got to make the sub. Whatever you do. And I felt it was a bit of player naivety.

41:46Staff meant naivety. They just got it wrong. And it come at a vital, you know, come at a huge cost to them. But they had enough chances to get themselves back in the game, especially when it gets to 2-2. I think there's only one winner. But they didn't capitalise. And that's where Bournemouth were then in the ascendancy. They shouldn't have wrestled that ascendancy back, but they did. And I think it tells you a lot about where Liverpool are right now. They're incredibly fragile. They haven't got that tenacity, that ability. And last year we'd see them. They're a shadow of the team from last year where they would somehow claw back victories and had that never-say-die attitude.

42:16But it's been very difficult for them this season. It's been a real struggle. And I think this game pretty much encapsulated that as well. Antonio Rowla said when they went in at half-time, because Virgil van Dijk had got the goal, it made things a little bit more difficult for Bournemouth because they were maybe protecting their lead rather than going all out for another goal. But that goal, you felt, gave Liverpool some of that momentum back. Yeah, spot on. I think the dynamic of Iriola's half-time team talk significantly changed after this Van Dijk goal just before half-time. I'm just going to highlight in there that little area where Van Dijk ends up scoring from that area.

42:52But it's a good ball in from Sir Bosley. But this is a moment of hope for Liverpool to grasp onto it. And I think it's actually really basic in terms of routine corner, good delivery from Sir Bosley. Is it just taller players against shorter players? That's another thing Andonio Rowla said. I think when we look at it from another angle, the front post space, you can just see here Van Dijk and the connection. Evan Nilsen is the man in the front post space. For me, if I'm being really critical, I think Evan Nilsen needs to get in front of Van Dijk and that's his job. But Van Dijk ends up meeting it first, ends up going in off his back, if you like, sort of loops over Petrovic.

43:25But I think that was a really big moment in the game because I thought for Liverpool to go in at half-time at 2-1, they'll believe in themselves they'll galvanise but they just didn't come back out in the second half in that capacity and then it was another Dominic Sobbersly free kick after scoring in Europe in midweek Bournemouth made sure they did have the draft excluder for this one yeah they did they needed it but it didn't matter he's so good at the moment I think in terms of this season with Dominic he's been so far Liverpool's best player he's not even close you know player of the year at Liverpool it's just a one man one man show he's been magnificent now there's been a little bit of dialogue between Mo Salah and Sobbersly And I think this actually helps a little bit because when you open up that angle, because Andoni Iriola was talking about this man here.

44:07That's Florian Verts, I think, isn't it? Yeah. Florian Verts, because you have to have a gap. We've seen a goal disallowed. I think it was Crystal Palace. Was it last year? It feels like it was last year. Started this season. Feels like a long time ago. Started this season. So but what obviously once this ball gets touched by Mohamed Salah, it becomes in play. So that becomes irrelevant. So when you're that close, taking three kicks, I always feel if you can get it up and down, keepers um left sorry right hand side Petrovic has a lot to do but it's not an easy one especially with his technique where he's got that real dippy one it's probably better to go keepers left so once that ball then gets played back I'll just let it run slightly let it run full pace to start Mo Salah just opens up that angle for him and his technique is so good it's like no back lift and no follow through now it's such a vicious strike into the keepers left hand side you can see it here little open up of the angle just take that back because I think it's Smith that tries to yeah Smith comes in here now when you're hitting that shot I took three kicks my my feeling would be I wouldn't necessarily aim there I would try to pick a player and almost think can I just aim almost at those bottles there and just try to bring it back so I would almost feel if I could get it anywhere around him the keeper's going to be unsighted until it gets to probably this point and then can he move his feet quickly enough?

45:27And obviously he can't. And with Soboslai's technique, which is this vicious dipping strike, it's very difficult for the goalkeeper. Look, you can see there, it gets low. But where he goes wrong, I would say Petrovic, is his, I'm not a goalkeeper coach, by the way, so goalkeeper coach is probably telling me more. But I feel he's hopping to his right because he wants to protect this wall. So he's waiting. But you're saying this from the point of view of somebody who's trying to read the goalkeeper if you're trying to score a free kick against him. I think he steps to his right, Jamie. Yeah, he does.

45:55Because of the wall, but because he knows that he needs to see the ball through that gap. Because Smith's gone and charged it. If you look at Petrovic, where he stood, his angle where he's going to sight the ball, because the ball's been moved, that I think he's stepping so he gets a better look at where the ball's going to come from. But I totally agree with that. But then one thing, once you step that way, what that then does, Izzy, I think, is put all of your weight to your right side. So then to get back as quickly this way when someone hits the ball as fast as what Dominic does is almost impossible to get back.

46:25because it's like, I just think we should run it slowly because you can just see him here. Because he's close, isn't he? All of his weight now, they can see how wide he's gone with his right foot. Now he's dipping that way. Can you then get your body back that way as quickly as you can to your left? You can't. It's too late. And then he sees it late because obviously he bends it around Smith and it's an unbelievable finish. And at that moment, we both went, well, Liverpool are going to win this game, but are certainly going to get a point. And they obviously couldn't. Well, I thought they would.

46:51But the point we should make about Florian Wurt was that what we believe match centre, or the officials thought, is that he was standing next to one player, and one player they think does not a wall make. You need to be next to all. You can see it, I think, better from the behind-the-goal angle than you come from behind. But once he touches the ball, that then changes it, Kelly, no? Yeah, but it's at the moment, because Mo Salah rolls it to him, but it's at the moment that Mo Salah touches the ball, he cannot be part of the wall. And what they're saying is Florian Verde is with one player, not with the whole of the wall.

47:26I also think Andoni could not care a less much. He has forgotten about that like it never existed because they got the win. Exactly, exactly. So they do go on to get the win. But at 2-1, Liverpool could have had a penalty. Riengermoa was definitely knocked off the ball. It's whether or not the force was enough for it to be awarded as a penalty. And also the question is, had he gone down, would it have been a penalty? Well, this is Bournemouth in a low block towards the end of the game because they're defending deep. Jimenez is having to drop back in and defend. Ingramoa has done exactly the right thing.

47:59Go 1v1, he's got the space. There's no contact here because he gets inside the box, which is the key thing. It's that moment there. For me, if Ingramoa goes down, I think a penalty is given because you can see it here in slow motion. Excellent 1v1 play. Jimenez is trying his best, busting the gut to get back in. It's just that leg there, that left leg. Knocks him off balance. He does really well to stay on his feet. Really honest from him, Ingramoa. but I think that could have been a penalty if he went down. I know this is a sort of perennial debate when we kind of point the finger at players who dive and strikers will always say, if we don't go down very easily, we're not getting the decisions.

48:35Well, if you're Ngomo in that context and in that scenario in the game, you've gone on the pitch, your manager sent you on the pitch to go and win the game for your team. He's done exactly the right thing, which is be positive, get in the moment, be creative. And in the moment, Ngomo is not thinking about going down, he's thinking about assisting. He wants to score or assist and he's done exactly the right thing, but it's one way. I don't endorse it at all in terms of looking back at it and go, oh, should I go down? Absolutely not. But I genuinely think if he does go down because of the contact, I think it's a penalty.

49:04Andy Robertson has been strongly linked with a move to Tottenham, other reports, Jamie. Yeah. Do you have concerns, especially if he does make that move, about Liverpool's depth in defence? Well, from the reports that we're hearing, Simakas would then come back just to give some strength in depth on that left-back position with Milos Kuerkez. So that would make sense. But particularly when you look at the players who are unavailable, we should also factor in the players who left over the summer. Simakas went off on loan. Trent Alexander-Arnold obviously left. Jarrell Kwanzaa left the club. There have been wholesale changes in the Liverpool defence.

49:46Yeah, obviously Conor's picked up a really nasty injury, so we're probably not going to see him again this season. Same with Giovanni Leone, he only played a couple of games. And he looks a real prospect, he looks a real talent. He picked up that injury in the Carabao Cup, and obviously hopefully Ibrahim Kanata will be back soon. But it does feel like it's a very, they are down to the bare bones, if you like. They need some players, he needs a little bit of help in that department, because if they were to pick up an injury or two more, they're going to have real problems. I felt, I don't know the ins and outs, so I can't talk, but Gueye felt like a big miss.

50:21That was always something that everybody would say that he's going to be going to Liverpool. It looks like a done deal. Manchester City obviously came in and offered him a huge amount of money to go there. And it's, I don't, you know, it's a really good move for him. I'm not, you know, fully understand that one. But it just felt like that would be one that Liverpool would have certainly partaked in. They didn't. So now they have to be clever in the market. The hard thing is, is you go and buy a player and Leone is going to be a real star, you know. and then he's probably going to be fit for the start of next pre-season, hopefully.

50:50So you're in a bit of a position, really, but you've got to make sure you've got some strength in depth. Jamie, people will not have sympathy for Liverpool's squad being thin, given how much money they spent over the summer. Do you think there's another... This is a point that Arnaz Lott made in pre-season, and he made it ahead of the game against Bournemouth at Anfield on the opening day of the season, that not enough people were talking about the players who weren't available, who had either left the club, obviously we know about the Jota situation as well, Nunez had gone, Luis Diaz left as well.

51:22Do you think there's an argument that their squad is thinner this season as defending champions than it was last season as Premier League champions? Yeah, and like today, Eketike's been brilliant, you know, and you'd love to have started him today, but you obviously have to be careful. And the ideal situation would be that Alexander Isak would have played, but he's obviously picked up a really bad injury. So they haven't been lucky with injuries, But I think if you're talking now about Liverpool having bad luck with injuries, I think a lot of other clubs will go, it's the same for everyone. That happens.

51:51There's nothing you can do with that. And I feel that Liverpool have to make sure that they just, if anything, and it's not easy finding good centre-backs, good young centre-backs. Chelsea are probably trying to do the same thing right now. Other clubs, you know, Arsenal have obviously got really, they've invested really well in the summer. They've got strength in terms of right-backs that can play centre-backs. And that's an area where Liverpool are going to have to strengthen. but the injuries have certainly cost them but it costs every team it's not enough of an excuse and it's certainly when you get back to two today I was asking more about transfers about players leaving the club rather than the players who aren't available through injury and horrendous situations as well Kelly and obviously Trent left but you knew that Trent was going to leave him so you brought in Fring Pong and obviously then Connor Bradley is finding form then he picks up that bad injury it has been difficult in that respect but Kelly all teams pick up injuries
