In short

The episode covers Saturday Night Football double-headers: Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea and Fulham 3-1 Brentford, plus broader Premier League context. For United, it focuses on Ruben Amorim’s “glimmer of hope” after a rain-soaked win featuring early chaos: Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez sent off in the 4th minute; United led through Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro; Casemiro then received a second yellow just before halftime; Trevor Chalobah scored with 10 minutes left from a Rhys James cross.

Key claims

United’s second-half resilience (10 vs 10) was their biggest home result under Amorim; Fernandes’ second-half performance was decisive; the win lifted United into the top half (7 points from five). For Fulham, it highlights Marco Silva’s side bouncing back after conceding first (Josh King error; Damsgaard goal). Fulham equalized and then took control via Alex Iwobi (goal and assist) and Harry Wilson (scoring/creating), with a late third that benefited from an own goal.

Notable examples

Fulham’s long-throw/second-ball preparation; Fulham’s defensive control in the box; Brentford’s away struggles.

Guests

Jamie Redknapp and Gary Cahill (studio analysis), plus match interviews with Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Alex Iwobi, Marco Silva, and Brentford manager Keith Andrews.

0:05This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Thanks for joining us. There was another double header of Saturday Night Football again this week. First up was Manchester United against Chelsea, followed by Fulham against Brentford. This is how we saw things at the end of the night.

0:30They've had too many full storms before, but for Ruben Amorim, this is a glimmer of hope, a glimmer of light. It started well for his team with the sending off of the Chelsea goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, in the fourth minute. That eased a path to a two-goal advantage. Bruno Fernandes with the first and Casemiro with the second. but it was a second yellow card for Casemiro that made it a nervous second half for the home team. And when Trevor Chalabar scored with 10 minutes to go from a Rhys James cross, it did make it very nervous indeed. But they do hold out. Manchester United 2, Chelsea 1. And perhaps the most significant home win so far for Ruben Amirim as Manchester United manager.

1:22They had to fight in that second half when it was 10 against 10. They had to hold on in those final minutes when Chalaba did give Chelsea some late hope. How significant, Jamie, could that prove to be? This is the biggest result of Manchester United manager, certainly at home. I think about the one at Manchester City last year, but this was a huge blood grim today. It got edgy. Once Casemiro got sent off, you weren't sure if they were going to be able to see out. Bruno Fernandes was magnificent. His second half, especially, carried the fight for his team. and it feels like a big occasion, but they've got to build on it.

1:54One game isn't enough. They've got to go and win two, three, four games. It was a mad game. I have to be honest, some of the substitutions, some of the tactical changes, it was very hard to keep up with the tights, but it was a joy because it was so chaotic. What positives do you think that Amarin would take from it, Gary, beyond the result? I think the way they went about the second half, to be honest, clearly in the first half they had the advantage. I think he'll be pleased with the second half. It was 10 v 10 and the way they managed the game at the end, or towards the end, obviously got over the line, which is the most important thing.

2:25And indeed, it is the United fans in full voice, and yes, they are, singing it the rain in the Stratford end tonight. Finally, they have something to shout about at Old Trafford. Manchester United into the top half, seven points on the board from five games. Chelsea slipping to sixth place. Two defeats in the space of a few days with the first of the season away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Liverpool with a 100 % record, making it all look very easy. Five wins out of five.

3:02Could this be the turning point for Manchester United under Ruben Amrim? On a sodden rainy night in Manchester, they have got the job done against Chelsea, who were down to ten men after just five minutes. That was when their goalkeeper was sent off. Casimiro sent off just before halftime. And there was a late goal from Trevor Chaliba to give United something to think about it. But they managed to get through. 2-1 victory. Gary Cahill is here with Jamie Redknapp. But we'll start, Jamie, with the red card, which is, of course, a very significant moment in this game. Absolutely. As early as it did.

3:35The earliest the goalkeeper's been sent off for 30 years. Five minutes into the game. Gary and I mentioned before the game, the weather, it made it very difficult, decision-making. Let's start from Magic Knight's point of view because it is a good piece of play. And what it shows is that they've got something to really work on because when you've got Cesco and you can hit him and then you get a good run from Mbamo, you can cause teams a lot of problems. You see Cesco gets up really early, beats Chalaba, and that's a good run. You can see there that the keeper comes out. It's a bad piece of play from his perspective.

4:03But I think from Chelsea's point of view, let's look at it now. You can see there that they end up in a bad position, really. You've got Caicedo, you've got Chalaba, and obviously Cesco just there behind him. Kukarela has now gone out to press Masraoui and I think that what he does is he becomes a left back he falls asleep he doesn't dictate he doesn't see that there's going to be a little bit of danger or read that there's going to be the flick on Kaiselu's body position's wrong now Umbermo is off and you can see he's got a header speed he gets inside him I'll just take that back just a second just to show because obviously from the red card perspective as he does it just there you can see that he's definitely going to get ahead of him and Bermot, Fafala's not going to get it and he's denied a goal-scoring opportunity.

4:46But now this is the other big factor for me. And this is where it all goes wrong for the co-keeper. Robert Sanchez, where he stood exactly now is where the impact is made. But the mistake he makes is indecisive. As that ball then gets flicked on, he decides to go backwards, which is the mistake. Because if he stays where he is, he'll probably come and clear it. He can be the first there. But he goes back and then too late, then he decides to come out and he makes a right hash of it. You can see him, just watch his movement here. He goes back, then he comes forward. It's too late and Umbermo gets there ahead of him and it's a really bad piece of goalkeeping.

5:18But brilliant forward play by Sesko and Umbermo. Real pace and energy from them to start after five minutes. No doubt it's a red card. Now you've got a big problem. Forward denying a goal-scoring opportunity rather than violent conduct, which some people are saying it could be because of the height of the challenge on Brian Umbermo, but it's a one-game ban for Robert Sanchez. So straight away, decisions are made by Enzo Mareska and his coaching team. He has to bring in another goalkeeper, of course, Philip Jorgensen. But Esteval comes off. So he's lost pace straight away and attacking dynamism.

5:50Then they decide within this same substitution window to make another change. Neto comes off. You're losing more pace, more creativity to bring on another defender. Do you think that was the right call, Gary? I think he could have bought himself a little bit more time, if I'm honest. The others had a plan in certain situations, I'm sure. But I just think in that situation, maybe he could have bought himself a little bit more time. Because having brought the extra defender in, they suddenly find themselves two goals down. They do, yeah. And it's a great ball by Masraoui. And I think Dorgue, it's an area, when the ball comes in there, it's too far out if you see his positioning.

6:22It's too far out to really head on goal. It's a great little area. You put it in a dangerous area there. And Fernandes, how many times have we seen him time his run to perfection and end up there? And that's where the Manchester United fans want to see him, in that box, as opposed to picking up all of them to their box. Two minutes, 30 VAR, to check that he was onside. He was just. What about the second? The killer blow? Yeah, again, Masraoui and Dorgi were again involved. What about Luke Shaw here? The ball's there. Yeah, Luke Shaw, he was absolutely excellent in this situation. I said this at half time.

6:50I thought the desire, the willingness to come, if you see it in this moment here, is desired to come. And also the... You want your goalkeeper to deal with it? The goalkeeper. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We said half time. Sorry, I missed the clips there. You see it half time. I don't know if you can go back or not, but the ball is in the air for a long period of time in that situation. We counted four and a half seconds, didn't we? which is a hell of a long time and also the position where it is it's in the six yard box you know I'm hoping I'm expecting my goalkeeper to come and either collect that or punch it and clear the danger think how Donnarumma did that for Manchester City so effectively last week against Manchester come a bit of violence yeah I'd be disappointed in that I'm sure didn't do the same and that was well not even all of that first half because Casemiro was sent off in the end it didn't matter for Manchester United because they have what could be a priceless victory and we'll bring you more reaction next

7:40Well, that must have felt very sweet for Manchester United. Back-to-back home victories they've seen off Chelsea tonight in the rain. And we can hear from Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes with Emma Saunders. Well, congratulations to you both on a hard-fought win. How big do those three points feel, Bruno? Every three points is massive at this moment because we haven't started the season as we wanted, obviously. but we go game by game so today was massive as the next one now for us it will be massive too You had to fight so hard Luke particularly in that second half but now that you have got it over the line how much do you think you needed that win in front of your home fans?

8:21Yeah it was massive I think we spoke a lot about the game before the game about winning the most important thing today was making sure we win and get the three points and I think in the second half you could see how desperately we wanted to win and we kind of just sat back and took a lot of pressure from them. But I think the lads and the whole team defended really well and we're very happy with three points. I suppose you could see it in the first half as well, though. The red card, it provides the opportunity, but you've still got to take it. Do you feel that you did that? You delivered the aggression that your manager's been asking for?

8:56Yeah, I think so. Again, I feel like we started the game really well, really sharp, really physical. Put them under a lot of pressure in the first five, ten minutes and obviously that then, you know, brings the mistake from them. And then, yeah, I think we know we can punish teams more with the chances we've created. But I think, yeah, today, definitely defensively, we was much better at defending in the box and, you know, we're very pleased with that. More reaction on that game on Sky Sports News and across our digital platforms. And right here with us before we leave you later tonight because we have another game to bring to you, another live game on this Saturday night.

Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game.

10:37Back-to-back wins for Marco Silva and Fulham. And it's three in a row in the Premier League against Brentford. It wasn't always pretty, but it's just what they needed. Building on the win here against Leeds and seeing off Brentford, whose good week has taken a significant turn for the worst. Brentford, remember, it was who took the lead in the first half. A mistake by Josh King and then Damskart pounced his first goal since last December. but then in the space of a minute and a half it won't be turned around scoring one and setting one up for Harry Wilson who always seems to score in this fixture the third time in a row he's done that this one was taken away from Brentford in the second half and no goal from Pinnock after a lovely ball in by Sessegnon could have been warm and use had one ruled out but in the end Fulham had too much for Brentford who could not find a response final score at Craven Cottage it is Fulham 3, Brentford 1 Jamie, a sweet Saturday night feeling for Fulham.

11:37Yes, they deserved it. They didn't start well, to be honest. They went a goal behind and a little bit bitty in their passing. Not quite what we normally see from Marco Silva's side. But then once they grew into the game and they got the goal back, they were always in the ascendancy and you felt they were going to be the team that goes on and wins it. Munoz was a constant menace going forward. He got all the ball. He was a real handful today and I think he'd be delighted. That's why he's chatting with him. He's still a very young player. You know what? I always wonder though. Why can't this wait until the dressing room?

12:04What could be so vital that has to come out now? Sometimes if it's on your mind as a manager, you just want to say it. And it would only be positive because I thought he was excellent today. Obviously he didn't get that goal because he was giving us a free kick. But his all-round game was good and he was such a nuisance for the Brentford defence. But I think he'd be delighted with that one today. Big result for them. And I thought they were certainly the better team going. Yeah, I'd echo that. I agree. I think they had their nose in front and in the game they dominated spells like you said they had a goal shots off three goals at home but this man you're pitching out he will be disappointed conceding especially two other goals that they did but for me I can call him with the stressful one again stressful this management oh he's got some more coaching tips he's telling Kevin now Kevin's exciting isn't he he's got some ability he was a sharp when he came on didn't he but the main man and I know they obviously give him mad and the match was Alex Iwobi today.

13:01Took his goal well and then a fantastic assist not long after. So yeah, better team. He'd be delighted with that one today and as I say, hopefully we'll talk into that guy in a minute, see what he thinks about it. Let's hope so. Just the flip side, of course is the Brentford story this evening, having taken the lead. They've ended up on the losing side and Keith Andrews is getting used to this, unfortunately, this feeling of defeat away from home, three away games, three defeats at Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and now Fulham and there are tougher games around the corner. He's learning quickly in this job, Gary, isn't he?

13:36He is learning quickly and obviously is an experience in terms of managerial roles. He's obviously been a great coach and there's been a lot of change at the football club, hasn't there? You know, there's been two of the main players, let's be honest, in Nguembe and Rissa, who's left. Arguably a lot of their goals came through them. The manager's changed. 39 of them, 66 last season. Exactly, you know, they're big shoes to fill. and the manager's changed as well. So there's a lot of change. There's no need for panic there, I don't think. It's an extremely well-run club. But, you know, they'll be looking for results to turn for them.

14:06Yep, and as the fans head for the exits, head to walk along the river, maybe back to Putney or through Bishop's Park, off to continue their Saturday evenings elsewhere. Most of them do so with a spring in their step. The day started with a Merseyside derby, which Liverpool won by two goals to one. Five wins out of five for the champions to top the table. Brighton had a two-goal lead against Spurs. Very different story to this fixture last season when Spurs actually led 2-0, ended up losing it 3-2. This time round, Spurs came back under Thomas Frank to take a point. It finished Burnley 1, Nottingham Forest 1.

14:47Forest still waiting for their first win under Ange Postacoglu. Crystal Palace's unbeaten start to the season continues and it's three straight home defeats to start the season for Graham Potter's West Ham United. Great victory for newly promoted Leeds, their first on the road back in the Premier League. It came at Wolves, who've lost all five games at the start of this season. Leeds had only scored one before today, but three goals today, all from new signings. Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the scoresheet, Anton Schaap with a brilliant free kick, Okafor also scoring, you can see all those goals on the Sky Sports app by scanning that QR code including the three we saw from Old Trafford this evening and a very wet and squally Old Trafford.

15:31Manchester United beat Chelsea by two goals to one. We'll bring you more reaction to that a little bit later on and Fulham winning the West London derby by three goals to one and three live games for you on a busy Super Sunday.

15:47Five points clear. There are only five games into this season. Champions having it all their own way at the moment. Arsenal will hope to get a bit closer tomorrow when they take on Manchester City in what looks like a really exciting game at 4.30. Palace continuing their great start. Bournemouth also in action tomorrow. They've had a really good start. Fulham climbing up to 7th. Now looks like a really good start for them with back-to-back home wins. And Brentford four points from their first five games under Keith Andrews. Behind them are West Ham United with just three points on the board so far.

16:22Aston Villa who go to Sunderland tomorrow and Wolves who remain pointless.

16:36The Sky Sports app is the place to get the biggest and latest sports news stories, live blogs, updates on goals as they go in and all the video highlights of the Premier League and much more. It's free to download from your app store and you don't need to be a Sky customer to use it. Now let's get more reaction to today's game on the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.

17:06And that is back-to-back home victories for Fulham. Inspired by Alex Uwobi. A goal and an assist for him tonight. And all that happened just one minute, 38 seconds apart. and the man himself is waiting to speak to us now, live from Craven Cottage. Evening to you, Alex. Congratulations on your performance and also the victory. How close was that, would you say, to your team's best performance of the season so far?

17:36Yeah, it's up there one of our best performances so far. I mean, we've been performing well, maybe results have been going our way, but to win again at home sends a message and yeah, we're using that as confidence and hopefully we can go into the next week with that confidence as well. What do you think the team did well tonight, Alex?

17:54We knew that Brentford are very good at long throws. So we worked on a lot of long throws and training this week. And yeah, we were basically working on the second balls and reacting to them. So we were able to withstand that, which was the main threat today. We were able to do well. We had a lot of players that were able to create chances. So we believe we'll always have the opportunity to take our chances and we were able to do so today. How hard are they to defend against when Coyote is throwing them in at that angle as well, it looks pretty challenging. Yeah, it is because you can't really judge the trajectory because it's so flat and you don't know where it's going to land.

18:30So we were literally working all week on second balls, but credit to our defenders, they're able to head away the first balls and clear it from the penalty box. Alex, it's Gary Cahill. I just want to say I read an interview you did recently just saying that you like to have fun on a football pitch. You look like you did that tonight. so congratulations. I want to ask you, in terms of personal ambition for this season, you had a great goal scoring season last year, what's the ambitions for yourself first of all and secondly for the club? You're starting seventh position right now, which looks healthy, what's the ambitions?

19:05For me personally, just to improve from last season, I mean, like you said, I had my best goal season, so hopefully I can achieve a better season this year and hopefully get into double figures. but for the team, I mean, we broke our points tally for the Premier League last season, but hopefully we won't just do that. Hopefully we achieve a European spot as well. Alex, Jamie, Redknapp, right, let's have a look at this goal. The first one, I'm delighted with it, I'm sure. You just reacted really well. Talk us through it, please, mate.

19:36Yeah, I mean, like I said, we've been working on long throws to react to second ball, so it's the same thing when we're attacking. I couldn't really tell you where the ball was going to drop, but you just have to stay on your toes. And lucky for me, I was in the right spot at the right time. I just had to make sure I got good contact. I'm putting in for the target. Lucky for me, I was able to go through the defender's legs, keep us on sight, and then went in. Nice feeling as well, you get your team back into it. And I'm not saying you couldn't make this pass, but does that pass that you make for the assist for Harry Wilson become a little bit easier because of the confidence running through your veins after scoring?

20:14Yeah, naturally when you have that confidence, you feel like you're able to do anything and you almost try anything. So it's something me and Harry work on in training. Like when I see him, I know he's going to make the running behind and yeah, it was a tight gap, but credits to Roger as well. He made a run to make that space for Harry and H is one of the best finishers on our team. And you see that from the finish today. It was a beautiful pass. One of the assists of the season, the weight of it, because you had to sort of put it through the two defenders perfectly and then Harry with a gorgeous finish.

20:43Yeah, yeah, it's something like I said we work on in training. The Gaffer, when we're playing playthroughs, he likes everything to be almost perfect so we work on it in training so it's nice when something on the training ground comes off into a game. Just tell us a little bit about the Fulham forward line because there's been this change it looks like really at the start of this season that Rodrigo is going to play a little bit more and Raul Jimenez is the guy that's going to come off the bench. What difference does that make to you in the way you attack?

21:13I mean they're both aerial threats, they both work hard for the team but credits to Rodri today, he works his socks off and we know that almost like eight times over ten if the ball's in the air he's going to win the first contact so we just have to gamble off him but it's the same with Raul, like you see the impact he has off the bench and he's a Mexico international, he always does well for Mexico. So it's a headache for the manager. But for me as an attacking player, it's amazing to have two strikers that not just do well for themselves, but do well for the team. And we need to talk about Kevin as well, Alex.

21:42He looks some pretty exciting talent he's got in those boots. Yeah, he's very, very sharp. He's very, very, you say about me, I like to enjoy my football and so does he. He's very entertaining and you can see the confidence. He's willing to try things and make things happen. So, I mean, it normally takes a lot for a player to settle down, but he's very confident and we give him the license to go and express himself. So, as long as he's working in our favour, we're going to keep on encouraging him to literally just play with freedom. And just a word as well on Josh King. He looked devastated, Alex, with the way the first goal was conceded.

22:15What have the team said to him? I mean, yeah, I was one of the first to speak to him because, I mean, 18 years of age, it was brave of him to actually show to feet and try and collect the ball on the edge of the box. And it's something we work on in training. Of course, it don't always come off. So I literally ran to him. The whole team said to him, yo, you've got a lot of quality. Just keep on doing your thing and I'm sure we'll get back into the game. And obviously he was grateful when I scored. He said, oh, thank you. Got me out of a pickle. But he's such a talented young man and it's something to learn from.

Read the full transcript

22:44But credits to him. Like he kept his head and he kept on going until unfortunately until he had to come off while he kept on doing his thing. Yeah, he's learning from you, Alex. He's certainly a great example. Congratulations on your performance tonight. terrific and a really good victory as well. Thanks for talking to us. Thank you very much. Take care. Well done, Alex. Thank you. Great performance from Alex Iwobi. I love what he says about Josh King there. We may as well start there with, Jamie, with the analysis because it was interesting what he said about the fact that Josh King was brave enough to come and receive it on the edge of his own box.

23:15Under pressure as well. I mean, I've watched Josh play probably since he was eight, nine years of age and he plays, when he plays for England under 17s or 16s, he will tend to play in a number six role. So it's not, it shouldn't really be anything that he's not accustomed to. I think he just makes a mistake. It can happen. You know, Brentford are trying to press, you know, and you can see Josh comes into frame here. He's getting pressed by Jordan Henderson. They roll out and then you can see they're pretty much man for man all over the pitch, Brentford. But Dam's guard number 24 is the player that's obviously the key to it because he's the one that, as we say in the modern terminology, he jumps.

23:49He's with Sander Berg there, you can see. and as that ball then gets played into Josh now, he sees the pitcher, just turn it back just a touch, you know, he has Anderson, Anderson would be the sensible one, but because he is a progressive player, he wants to always look forward, he tries to whip this ball into Tete, number two, but you can see that Damsgaard's left his man, he anticipates it, obviously Josh doesn't get quite the connection that he wants, it falls to Damsgaard, and when this happens, all you do is just hold your breath and think, please don't score, please don't score, but because Dam's guy is that kind of player, he has that quality, he composes himself and finishes it really well.

24:26Gets that one touch, another one, and then bends it into the corner. And then he's got his head in his hands and all you can do is just go brush your shoulders off. You know, and all the players are going to come around as much as they can, but we all make mistakes, Gary. Listen, it's a learning curve for him today, wasn't it? And it's great, actually, what Alex just said, you know, an experienced player, 29, I think he is now, to go over and have them words with him. He's a young boy, he'll make mistakes during his career. But what I was watching, actually, and what I was interested in after that was his reaction.

24:49and I felt like he kept playing to his strengths. He kept trying to get in the spaces, in the pockets, turn, carry the ball. It didn't deflate him in that sense. I'm sure he goes to bed tonight and he's devastated. But also from his point of view, I was happy that Fulham got the result, you know, because it's not that costly now. So he's going to learn from that for sure. Absolute talent. And I thought, yeah, it was great from Alex. Great leadership skills. Yeah, when he said, he said to me, thank you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, that is a relief though. That is definitely a relief. If you lose this game 1-0 because of that, it feels so much worse you go back home now you go in the dressing room the lads are having a laugh you've got three points it's almost in the past he's going to be he's going to be we both like we've said before yeah yeah yeah but he's going to be a tremendous talent isn't he he is yeah yeah I just like his like I said how he carries the ball forward how he gets on the ball in tight areas he seems like he's got a lot of confidence that will be a big blow and like I said just learn from that just learn from that you're a young boy you're going to go through these moments in your career yeah and huge potential that is for sure Sounds like it's been a fun week on the Fulham training ground, working on second balls.

25:50That's a right laugh. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it's paid off this evening, hasn't it? Yeah. Yeah, go on. Let's have a look. Let's have a look at the equaliser. Oh, the equaliser. Because he talked about the pinball and reacting. Sorry, David. They've been working on the defensive side of things, but it pays off because, as he said, he's sharp there where the ball does drop. He is, and he's just alive. And like, you know, he obviously said he didn't know where exactly he was going to land, but it's important that he's on his toes and he's in and around. He makes a second movement there, which I like.

26:18You know, he showed it at the edge of the box the first time. He's not just stood and watched it. He's made a second movement. You can see it here. He's just on the edge there. He shows there on the edge of the box. Have you stopped at that? Yeah, highlighted. There he goes. Yep. You know, a lot of players can just stay there and watch. He makes a second movement and he gets his rewards. Yeah, he's alive, isn't he? Yeah, he's alive. He's on his toes. And like you said, he hits the target and scores. Foul. Just on Nathan Collins there. You can see that Muniz gets his arm up. I should say, yeah, from the defenders' union, shouldn't I really?

26:49I think I said to you off air, I think it's more of just using a bit of strength and just knocking him off balance as opposed to a full-on push. So for me, no. And Collins will be disappointed with that. Sorry, does that go back to what we talked about with Muniz? He's a bit of a handful in there. He is a handful. His physical causes chaos. Yeah, he's definitely a handful. I think he'll be disappointed, Collins, that he doesn't try and get the first header. But then after that, if you just adjust your feet and clear the ball, But there's plenty of times where the other defenders could clear that.

27:17It was a bit of a pinball after. So from Brentford's point of view, a bad call to concede. But from Alex's point of view, he's alive in the box and he gets his rewards. Yeah, and 1 minute 38, they found themselves in front. Goal of the night, Jamie. Yeah, and the crowd were up. They were buzzing. They started to win a few second balls because they'd been sloppy in the opening 20-odd minutes of the game. They hadn't quite got their normal game. They weren't being that productive. They didn't really pass the ball with a normal enthusiasm and quality they had, but they start to win a few second balls.

27:46And then once that ball gets played out to Alex, Munoz does really well. He takes a couple of touches. I'll just take that back because this is so good. It's one of the best passes we've seen in a long time because, as I say, you've got that area there to just play that ball. Can you dissect that defence? You see Vandenberg and Pinnock is trying to get back in. Harry Wilson's got his arm up. He thinks, yes, can you play that to me? and I asked him the question because we've all had that feeling I remember you scored an over-head kick for Aston Villa once and you probably feel like you can fight the world after that Oh, remind me of that A beautiful one You score plenty of goals but you do you get that amazing rush that you feel like you can do anything after that don't you?

28:23So that confidence just was seeping in through his veins Yeah, full of confidence there and you see Harry from the minute he made his run he knew where he wanted it he's got his hand up put it there, put it there and the way to pass for me is the most important thing because the way to pass allows Harry to take that first time almost feel like He's already got a picture in his mind, Harry, that he wants to play in that corner. He's just waiting for the weight of pass. But he must make that decision very early. Yeah. Because he adjusts his feet, doesn't he, when he sees it? I think if he takes a touch to defend, he has a chance to come across.

28:48They're the small margins, and it's such a good finish. He makes it look so easy. But he's got this ability, you know, with his left foot. But the weight of pass from Alex was super. Yeah, he's got a wonder of a left foot, that boy. Yeah, he has, yeah. He's scored so many good goals, you know. He scored two in this fixture last year, didn't he? Yeah, Brentwood is sick of the sight of him. Oh, absolutely. But you're right, the weight of the pass and it's coming along the ground and the pitches are so pure now. And he can just, as long as he gets that right connection. And what you also do by taking it first time, you give the keeper no chance because he doesn't have a chance to set himself.

29:18And that is why that's such a great finish and a really well worked goal at a really important moment. Great piece of quality. Fabulous goal. A little bit of fortune about the third goal. Not for the first time for Fulham this season, benefiting from an own goal at the same end. In fact, he goes in the same corner as well at the same end. Jamie? This is a real feature. I said it to you, Gary, about Anderson. He can pass the ball beautifully, can't he? We saw him do it for Crystal Palace. He pings it out wide and then they get a one-on-one with Sessegnon and Coyote. And sometimes, I've said a lot about Coyote lately, sometimes you can't beat him at pace.

29:51So the best thing to do is just maybe make a little bit of move, just get half a yard and then you can play that ball in. as when you see because not very often the game now Gary because we see so many players out here normally that want to cut back and then play it how much more difficult is it to defend against when Sessignon plays it and it's coming in that way as a defender yeah it is but I think from here his body shape the defender's body shape allows him now to go to the line and I think it's just that extra yard where he gets that space to cross it in it's a great delivery great ball isn't it it's a great ball yeah what goes wrong here then for Pinnock who looks like he can see it all the way I'm not quite sure, I'll be totally honest.

30:29I think maybe he sees it late just because Collins doesn't get the contact that he wants on it. But again, I'm not quite sure what he's thinking. Whether he's looking to duck out and let it run out the back post, which is a possibility. Other than that, I don't see another reason why he wouldn't just head that away. So it's a strange decision for me, that one. Do you think Collins might just get that flick? That's what it looks like. Yeah, maybe he thinks he's going to get the flick. And like I said, with that there, it looks like he's looking to duck out and maybe it go out the back door. if he's not sure what's around him.

30:57That goal took it away from him as well, didn't it? That made it so difficult after that. Yeah, it really deflated him, yeah, definitely. Disappointed goal to concede, and as Jamie says, that really put the result beyond any doubt. 3-1, it finished. Here's Keith Andrews now. He's talking to Natalie Giedra. Keith, tough loss tonight. Of course, Fulham did a lot of good things, but is it more frustrating because a lot of those mistakes were kind of self-inflicted? Yeah, I think the moments of the game, in terms of the two goals that we conceded just before half-time were very frustrating. We knew tonight was going to be a difficult game.

31:32We knew the types of qualities they would have. And in a local derby, you need to always have that level of aggression and concentration around how you perform. And then you need to manage, I mentioned it before the game, the games within the games, the momentum swings. And you can take the sting out of the atmosphere within the stadium and ultimately try and deal with those scenarios as an individual where it's concentration, aggression, focus, togetherness, all those types of aspects and the timing of the goals really hurt us. Talking about managing these momentums, 98 seconds before their first and second goal.

32:07The first goal looked a bit messy. Do you think the team didn't recover well enough from that goal and then they concede the second? Yeah, possibly. I think it goes back to what I was mentioning around the concentration, managing the game. The second goal comes from a throw-in for them deep in their half where our structure was pretty good in terms of how we set up for it. But then we allow runners to run off us. Basics of the game are a dirty word at times, but I think they're really, really important. Simple things like aggressive duels, tracking runners, nullifying the opposition. Unfortunately, we allow them to get to a position pretty easily from deep in their half into our box where Harry Wilson is able to finish.

32:50So the timing of the goals so close together just before halftime really hurt us. You're listing, analyzing the mistakes from those two goals especially. But do you see a pattern in the goals you've been conceding? Ten goals conceded in five games, eight goals in matches away especially? Not so much a pattern, no. I must be honest. I think when you look at tonight, the types of goals that they scored. Similar to last year when we were here, there were types of goals like that. I think it's more Fulham-related in terms of them. Tour goal in particular, stopping crosses, dealing with crosses, and we can say it's slightly unlucky from an own goal from Ethan, and I suppose the actual final action was.

33:33But you always have to look at the actions before the goals and what leads to it. Something we alluded to all week in terms of the build-up to this game. So, yeah, that was a disappointment. On the offensive side, Do you think there was maybe a little bit of lacking a cutting edge in those final decisions, especially? I think that's fair. Yeah, I think it was disjointed at times. I think we got into good areas and whether it was the belief, the conviction, a little bit of quality at times when we did get into those areas, whether it was the final pass, final shot, decision making at times, just didn't quite create the opportunities that we probably should have.

34:10Thank you, Keith. Thank you. well Gary alluded to it earlier Jamie but was it always going to be a tough start for Brentford this season given the hand that Keith Andrews in his first job as a manager has been dealt in terms of those key personnel that have that have moved on Brian Embermo, Johan Visser, the goalkeeper Mark Flecken plus Christian Norgard yeah yeah it was it's going to always going to be difficult you know and the you know the performance the first one certainly the first one of the season against Nottingham Forest was live on Sky. I watched the game. They were poor. And they had a really good result against Aston Villa.

34:45Fantastic win in the Cup against Bournemouth. I know they changed a lot of players that day. And they could have won at Sunderland. Chelsea, they picked up a good point. That was a really good one last week on Saturday Night Football. Beat Aston Villa. And then today, it feels like a bit of a punch on the nose again. And that's what it's going to be a bit like this season for Brentford. I think it is going to be up and down. They've got to try and find some away form. That was something they struggled with in the first half of last season. but that was due to their fixtures and how difficult they were away.

35:10But the ones they've lost to this year are games that you'd be thinking, we've got to be more competitive. We've got to make sure we get something at Sunderland. Today in a local derby, can we get a point? But the next six games, it doesn't get any easier. It's always going to be difficult. Who knows what's going to happen at West Ham in the coming weeks. Manchester United next week, they've got to make sure they make it really difficult. He's a record at home against them, beating them twice. Yeah, and they bashed them up a couple of times. So that will be a game they'll look at next week and they've got to be good and they've got all the details, the set pieces, and make himself hard to beat, Gary.

35:39Gary, do you think Brentford would be one of those teams, given what's happened, given the big turmoil and the big turnover of players, and a new manager as well, that the promoted clubs would be looking at and saying, this is one that we can target? I think it's a risky time for them at the moment. Yeah, like I said earlier, I think just with the amount of changes, especially the two key players, you know, in Brentford and Mesa, I think there's big onus on Thiago this season. He was injured for a lot of last year. So, you know, they'll be looking for him to hit this season up and running and get some goals for them.

36:11Also, the manager change, you don't always get an immediate reaction with that, obviously. That sometimes takes time to settle tactically, etc. So, yeah, I feel like it's the matter of settling the ship and trying to get a bit of momentum this season for them. Tenth last season, finished above Fulham. Yeah. Do you think the ambitions are different this time? Well, I don't want to undersell Brentford because I think they do a great job. They're so well organised. But when I look at, when you've had that amount of changes, you have to be realistic and I think Burnley, Sunderland, Leeds are more competitive than any of the three teams I've seen come up in a long time they will pick up points they're going to be really difficult to beat so I think that the expectations have to be obviously they have to change and I think as long as Brentford stay in the Premier League and they can build and they've always got great ideas about bringing players in and I'm sure everything is always well managed there but you just have to be careful because of the other sides in and around them I still think they're going to be perfectly fine but Keith Andrews will be well aware they're going to have, this is going to be one of those seasons where they need to make sure they pick up points that'd be more difficult to beat away from home.

37:11Yeah, Manchester United and Manchester City up next for Keith Andrews and Brentford. Up next for us, we're going to bring you more reaction from Craven Cottage. But also we will be reflecting on our earlier game from 5.30. Had a bit of everything this one. We had the two red cards and we had three goals and in the end, we had a much-needed victory for Ruben Amorim. All the reaction coming your way next.

38:53This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get more analysis of the game and return to the student.

39:02Feels like Fulham might have turned a solid start into a good one with this victory tonight. That makes it back-to-back home wins. And we did the double over Brentford last season and they have beaten them again in front of their own fans. Let's hear what Marco Silva has to say about it. He is with Natalie Gedra. Marco, how pleased are you not only with the win and the amount of chances you guys created, but also the control you show throughout the game? Very pleased and very proud of the players, really. They deserve all the credits for what they did and the way they did it tonight. Great first half, great one.

39:42Started on the front foot like we did prepare ourselves and we wanted and was, of course, our objective, our goal to do it. And very good moments of football, the way we create in our build-up. The way we did it, we didn't give many chances for them to press as I like they like to do it in a man-on-man situation. Of course, they scored a goal from a mistake from ourselves, but I think we did it really well. Good 20 minutes, we considered a goal, but the reaction was even better. we kept ourselves cool and with the same the same view and taking the same pictures from the game that we needed to play throughout their spine in some moments or out wide with some dynamic that we did create and we were leading the score at half time and the players deserve it of course the third goal gave us that confidence and calmness that we needed and of course until the last minute we did control the game very well we scored the fourth goal was disallowed, but the reality that the players did really well.

40:43Proud of them, proud of the fans. They deserve this type of nights to have a good weekend. Yeah, three goals scored, but the way you guys defended their long throw wins, we were talking about it before the game, and Alex was actually speaking to the studio and saying how much you guys worked throughout the week on those second balls. So how proud are you of the execution? It was close to perfect. I told the players now it was a good challenge. Of course, we can prepare ourselves well, and we did it throughout the week, but the best challenge they are on a match day definitely is where you have the pressure, where the opposition goes with everything, and I don't know how many throw-ins they have or long throw-ins they did inside our box, but probably around 20, between 15 and 20 probably, and the way we challenged it and the way the players, they kept the concentration because it's very important to keep it, to don't lose the players, to go with the runners because normally it's not going to be the first ball in that moment that is going to be, to punish the opposition, it's going to be much more the second action or the second ball and I think we did really well.

41:48We were brave in the first, but we did really well in the second too. And all the defensive set pieces from ourselves, I think we did control it well and I have to congratulate the players because it's a moment that you have to be brave, but you have to keep the organization and at the same time we have to keep the focus. And they did the three things in a very good way. Our offensive set pieces, they were good. We did create a great chance with Roa King as well in the first half. Josh King, he makes the mistake and then he gets the support from his teammates. He gets a standing ovation from the crowd.

42:17How do you make sure an 18-year-old absorbs what he needs to absorb from this mistake but also moves forward? I think he did show it. He did show it after the mistake. and this is what I really like on him and I love on him, that he made a mistake, but straight after he went to receive the ball again and to go and he never lost the confidence, never lost the faith on himself and more than that, what we wanted from him in each moment of the game and showed maturity for a player that is 18 years old. It's not normal to see it, but showed the maturity that I love to see on him and I really love the way the players, they support him straight away.

42:56It's so nice to see. They knew how important moment in the game, but they kept the focus and support a young lad like Josh in that moment. Like they are going to support Rodrigo or they're going to support Joaquin or Calvin, it doesn't matter who is going to make the mistake. We are going to be all on it and we won because we as a team were much better. Well done. Thank you. Josh King has an awful lot of fans in that Fulham dressing room, that is for sure. Does it feel like Fulham are slowly growing into this season, Gary? Yeah, the league table suggests that, doesn't it? It's out of seventh now.

43:31It's been a good start for them. They seem like a very settled club. Settled squad, settled manager, options off the bench. I know they've only brought in a couple of players this summer. But like I said, it just seems settled. So, no, good start for Fulham. Well, you heard the ambition from Alex Iwobi, Jamie, to improve on last season when they finished 11th. They got a record number of Premier League points. But for a while, there was a little bit of a flirtation around Europe. Has that got to be the next target? Yeah, I think so. And there's no reason why it can't happen. You know, they have that quality.

44:03I think Gary's spot on, you know, and Kevin's going to be a great addition, not just to Premier League, but also to Fulham. They've got a lot of exciting players. Munez is always such a handful. I like the way he plays. He's got, you know, he brings people into play. He's got lovely qualities. Yeah. And it feels that they are, they're in a really good place and they're a good side to watch. I'm pleased to see Harry Wilson getting a run as well, because at times he's had to suffer being a sub and coming on and you get that as a bit of a label. But he's more than that. He's a quality player. You can see with that left foot, with goals, assists, he's always looking to be progressive with his passing.

44:34I really like him. But yeah, they're in a really good place. Really good victory tonight for Fulham and a really important victory earlier for Manchester United. This was our 5.30 kickoff and they took on Chelsea at a rainy, stormy Old Trafford. and striking early after Brian Umbermo was brought down by Robert Sanchez. Out of his area, straight red card for denying a possible goal-scoring opportunity. And Manchester United made them pay in that first half. Bruno Fernandes with his 100th Manchester United goal. Philippe Jorgensen replacing Sanchez in goal. Didn't come for that one. Luke Shaw did.

45:13And Casemiro headed home. Casemiro, though, wasn't to see the second half, picked up a second yellow card in first half stoppage time. So then it was 10 apiece and a bit more of a contest going into the second half, which Chelsea edged after Chalabar gave them some hope with 10 minutes to go. But United held on to Ruben Amrim's great relief. And Emma Saunders was there to get the reaction. well Ruben a big sigh of relief I'm sure how good does that victory feel yeah really good now it's time to to create a little bit momentum so I think I think we started the game really well really aggressive and again you I think I cannot remember a very good play from us but we pushed the opponent for how aggressive we were in the second balls, the first balls.

46:11So it was a good thing. An eventful afternoon. How do you sum it up? Very difficult, especially because after three, four minutes with the red card, completely change the game. All the plan and everything is in the bin. You asked your players to be more aggressive, more clinical today. You feel you saw that, You got what you wanted. I felt the urgency, especially in the beginning of the game. Of course, the sent-off helped us. But again, if you remember the first half, we had so many opportunities. Three against one, three against two. We have to be more clinical to finish the game sooner and again.

46:50So with the sent-off of casa, you never know what is going to happen. So we have to take every chance to kill the game. Let's go back to the red card. What was going through your head? Nothing. First of all, it's a situation that we can avoid because we knew that this kind of long ball for Cesc, they tried to flick for Beumo. We knew that. Unfortunately, we considered that moment where, again, after three or four minutes, when you are one player down, it becomes completely defuelled and changes the game. You then decided to make the double substitution, withdrawing both your wingers, adding another defender into the mix.

47:34What was the thinking there? No, they used to attack with five players, so we need to defend in that moment for me we need to defend with five players. We can defend absolutely with four. When we are 11-11, when we are one player down, the idea was to defend with five, so So we decided to change Estevão and Pedro Neto. And then after also we changed goal because he made an effort to play this game because he was not 100 % fit. This morning he had the test and he was OK, but not 100 % fit. Bruno Fernandes with his 100th Manchester United goal. Just how valuable is he to what you want to do with this team?

48:22He has a great spirit, he's our captain and he scored a goal playing as a midfielder. So I'm really happy with that. Pointed, I think maybe from Ruben Amrin, but a really important victory. Could it be, Jamie, the turning point for Ruben Amrin? I think I'd reserve my judgment on that just now. It was a great result, but they played against the Chelsea side for half an hour with 10 men. and they got their noses ahead. They made it difficult for themselves. But let's applaud what they did today. It's a good win, but now you've got to go to Brentford and win. And now you've got to keep me known. What was the best thing about the way they did this today?

49:03It was really difficult to say. And the reason why, because playing with 10 men after five minutes and you're playing against the side, you go 2-0 up, you're in a great position. So did I really learn a lot about Magic United today? No. But will I say that it was a great result and a brilliant performance in terms of what they had to do to get the win? They showed a bit of aggression at the end. They showed some discipline and desire to get the three points. Yes, absolutely fantastic. But you can't say it's a turning point because, as I say, it was quite an unusual game. There were so many things happening, you know, 10 men.

49:32And then I think the Chelsea manager got in his own way, making the substitutions he made. He took off two wingers. He gave them the real ascendancy. And then Cole Palmer got off in. Just little things went in their favour today. But take nothing away. It was a really important three points. Gary, before the match, we asked questions about how Chelsea would cope with this challenge this season under Enzo Maresca of Champions League, followed by Premier League a couple of days later. Do we still have those same questions? I think we still have those same questions, yeah, because ultimately today was obviously a sending off that changed the game totally, you know, so early in that football match.

50:08so yeah I think that's yet to see how they're going to react with that don't get me wrong obviously midweek playing arriving back probably Thursday morning traveling again Friday to go to Manchester but these are the obstacles that are going to have this season and I'm going to have to manage let's hope Cole Palmer's okay and didn't pick up too much of a big injury but these are the tests we're going to have this season I don't think we can judge them off this game you know sending off as a sending off and it changes the game like I said totally so we'll reserve the judgment for that. Okay. Gary, thank you very much.

50:37Jamie, thank you as well. He's not convinced that this is a turning point, but maybe they'll spend the whole week practicing, defending long throws before they head to Brentford next weekend, Manchester United. It's an important victory for them, certainly this evening and for their manager, Ruben Amrim, who must have been feeling the pressure. Certainly feeling the rain today at Old Trafford. Great victory for them. And in the West London derby, an important victory for Fulham as well. And don't forget, tomorrow, a really exciting Super Sunday is coming your way, headlined by Arsenal and Manchester City.
