In short
Liverpool vs Tottenham at Anfield ended 1-1, with Richarlison scoring late to earn Spurs Igor Tudor’s first point as head coach. Topic: match analysis plus wider Premier League table implications. Guests/interviewees: Pedro Porro (Spurs player; discussed mentality and belief after missing chances), Richarlison (Spurs; former Everton; said he keeps going after missed chances and scored a “big point”; noted he likes playing big teams), plus Igor Tudor (Spurs coach; credited team spirit and simplified tactics, including a back-four/4-4-2 approach).
Key claims
Liverpool were “sleepwalking,” dominated in shots/XG/possession but conceded too easily and failed to see out a 1-0 lead; Tottenham deserved at least a point and used two strikers for physicality and direct play.
Notable examples
Liverpool’s 17 shots, XG 1.67; Richarlison’s goal after a direct ball and second-ball pressure; Dominic Szoboszlai’s free kick and Vicario’s save from Gakpo. Also covered: Man United’s 3-1 win vs Aston Villa, relegation-point swings (Spurs/Leeds/Forest), and debate over Michael Carrick’s credentials at Man United.

0:26and that's it and in dark times a substantial Spurs silver lining Igor Tudor has a point he has a start he has a foothold he had Henry Charlton an Anfield specialist who came here and haunted Liverpool again, as so often in the past. Nobody is entirely thrilled about it. For Liverpool, at least it is a point that carries them back into the top five. But for Spurs, it is a rare, rare scrap to take home from Anfield. It is a rock stopper. It gives them reason to look up and it gives those who have travelled good reason to smile, to cheer, to dance and to sing. and they've done precious little of that since the turn of the year but for Liverpool Jamie, it feels a little dumb Awful performance considering the opposition and that's, I'm not trying to be disrespectful to Tottenham right now but they've been the worst team in the Premier League now for probably the last couple of months exactly who you want to play playing at home, the incentive of the other results this weekend as well and to put in a performance like that but it's been like that all season and the big question on everybody's lips is that down to the manager or the make-up of the squad?
1:47Could a new manager completely revitalise these type of players and bring that energy and sort of intensity back into this team? I'm not sure, I think a lot of it goes back to what happened in the summer the profile of the players come in and there's just too many players, you just want to play when the ball's at the feet, they don't want to dig in when the opposition have got the ball and make it difficult and that's why it's so easy to play against this Liverpool team thank you Jamie and Jamie of course will be back on Monday Night Football tomorrow examining all the issues of the weekend and this will certainly be amongst those so for Liverpool a couple more points have escaped them but they creep ahead of Chelsea into fifth for Spurs still no win this year still their worst winless league run for 91 years but it is something for Igor Tudor this point just might be the big point something is a whole lot better than nothing.
2:43Liverpool won, Tottenham won. Kelly. Peter, it's that man Richarlison again. He's been a thorn in Liverpool's side over the years and it proved to be once again at Anfield as he scored the goal that earned Spurs. That precious point. It may well kick-start their battle to survive another season in the Premier League. It's been a difficult season for them but might this be the result that turned things around? Plenty of questions to be asked about that Liverpool performance, and we'll be doing that. We're on air between now and 8 o 'clock.
3:19One of the big winners in the race for Champions League football, Manchester United. Probably the big winners of the weekend with a 3-1 victory against Aston Villa. Casemiro, Cunha and Seshko on the score sheet. That one.
3:34But it finished goalless between Nottingham Forest and Fulham. But again, a precious point that takes Forrest out of the bottom three. They did have a goal disallowed for the narrowest of offside. Remember, you can see everything on the Sky Sports app just by scanning the QR code that you can see on your screen right now. And it was also goalless between Crystal Palace and Leeds. But again, a big point for Leeds United as they tried to survive another season in the Premier League. They played the whole of that second half down to 10 men. and Palace had a goal chalked off for offside in the second half as well.
4:10So here's what happens at the bottom of the table. West Ham back inside the bottom three, having briefly escaped it yesterday. Nottingham Forest also on 29 points. That point for Tottenham moves them on to 30, Leeds now on 32 and then there's a gap to Crystal Palace and the teams above them. Meanwhile, in the battle for the Champions League, Chelsea and Aston Villa on the wrong end of those 1-0 and 3-1 scorelines. Liverpool get a point. It means they're in fifth place and they're one point above Chelsea. But they're two points behind Aston Villa. And Manchester United now starting to open up a real gap.
4:46Three points to Aston Villa. Five points to Liverpool in fifth. And if Champions League places go down to sixth, they are now six points clear of Chelsea in that position. And right at the top, after Arsenal got the win and Manchester City could only manage a draw, The gap at the top is now nine points, although City do have a game in hand.
5:10Well, we know that Arsenal and Manchester City will face each other again in the league this season. They will also play each other in the Carabao Cup final, 3.30 next Sunday on Sky Sports Football. But here we'll be reflecting on what's been a really busy day in the Premier League and could prove to be a pivotal day in the race for Champions League football. Liverpool at Anfield thought they may have had the three points in hand, but a late equaliser from Richarlison may have kick-started Spurs' season.
5:57hello i'm simon lazenby join me and a host of top guests on the f1 show after every round of the 2026 formula one world championship we'll analyze and debate every twist and turn of what's sure to be a memorable season. 6:33This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get more analysis of the game and return to the studio.
6:43It is Randall Kolomawani. It's Richarlison. It's one each. A glimmer of Tottenham sunlight. Tottenham take a point from Anfield, having been behind in the game with Charlison once again, scoring against Liverpool, who had 17 shots, an XG of 1.67, almost three times as many touches in the opponent's box and twice as much possession almost as Tottenham. And yet Tottenham had seven shots on target and two big chances. Took one of them and took a point away from the game. Could that be the moment that kickstarts Igor Tudor's reign? Could that be the moment that turns their season and allows them to pull away from the relegation places?
7:32Pedro Poro and Richarlison are with Patrick Davison. Guys, well played. Pedro, a really difficult moment, a really low point in your season. How much fight, how much determination have you come back and shown today? Yeah, of course, I say before the game, we need to put in the pitch of our mentality today because it's a difficult game. I think today the team is good. Not the team, everyone, the fans, unbelievable also. And yeah, keep going now. Richarlison, what was the key today? Was it fight? Was it mentality? Yeah, in the first half I missed two chances, but I keep going and keep continuing.
8:17In the second half I have the opportunity again and I score a big point. We stay focused for next week. In the middle of the week we have the Champions League, but the focus now is important in the Premier League. And somehow, given you're a former Everton player, is this a ground where you just seem to do well? A ground where you just seem to feel good? Yeah, I like to play against a big team. It's a big opportunity for me. I want to stay fit for the club, for the national team, because we have a World Cup in June. I need to stay fit because the club needs to be fit. Pedro, how did you do it today?
9:06Probably everyone watching, maybe even Spurs fans would have thought I'm not sure what chance we have today and how important was it that you guys in the dressing room didn't feel like that, that you retained belief? Of course, I always believe in this thing I say this for my team my teammates before the game believe in us I think in this moment you need everyone together and yeah, I think today we have a good game I think the most important for us now is to take the point take the positive thing and keep going in the next week in the Champions League we have two games next week and yeah, it is How much credit does the manager deserve today?
9:54He's had a lot of criticism but it looked like he simplified the plan went to a back four kind of, you know, a back four and then another four sat in front a block. Did that help today? Does he deserve credit for his words not allowing you to think too much and worry too much and also for his tactics? No, I think we need to follow the plan for today. I think the team is the same, follow the plan and stick it in the game. I think the first half for us is Richie Seide. I have chance, but in this moment we go to the second half stay 1-0 in the game this is important for sticking the plan of course always in every game follow the manager I think this is important, stay everyone together now Thank you, well done Well Pedro Porro wants the players and the manager to all keep together between now and the end of the season in order to get Tottenham out of the situation that they find themselves in, however However, today, they got a point at Anfield.
11:00They got the point at the home of the champions. And yet, it was not a fluke. They deserved at least that from the game. They dug deep. People have been poking fun at sports the last few months. It's been a difficult season from no doubt. But today, they showed that fighting spirit. It was ugly sometimes. They went direct to goal. And the other chance came from direct play, probably unlike Tottenham. They showed a bit of spirit, fight and quality at the right time. To go goal down is all you're thinking. We'll find out about these lads today. And I tell you, we have to give them credit today. They've showed plenty of, as I said, fighting spirit and quality, deserves it.
11:33And towards the end, yeah, Liverpool obviously had one or two half chances, but we were sitting there going, Tottenham could even go on to win this late on. Big problems at Liverpool. There's something missing there. But for Tottenham to take a point, a bit of momentum, they have to get some momentum into their season. They're on the home straight now. Teams are running over the games. So that point will lift everyone, the supporters. Obviously the manager who's been heavily criticised. Big lift for everyone at Spurs today. and not a big few games coming up, obviously. And as much as it felt as though Spurs were going to get back into the game, it definitely felt as though Richarlison was the man who was going to do it.
12:04Absolutely, Kelly. You know, all game, he was a fool in their side. Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk really struggled with him. They had a bit of physicality, but what we've seen today is they might have fallen on system here with two strikers, two up front. You can see with Solanke there at the back post with Richarlison. They're a handful. They've got physicality. They were powerful. Callers were coming in or free kicks. They went direct. You could hit them. You can see Solanke bumps into Gomez there. Virgil van Dijk now has got a problem. And that happened time and time again. As Roy rightly says, it wasn't pretty.
12:33But they had opportunities. And they were just always there. You can see they land on this second ball here. Gets his strike away. And it just became uncomfortable for Liverpool. The longer it went on, you felt that they would get something. Jamie Carragher said it perfectly. They were sleepwalking into this Liverpool. But you also have to credit them. You can see here, just gamble Colin Warnie at the back post. Richarlison doesn't quite get on the end of that. And then they obviously get the goal. which is one direct ball, Colin Warnie wins it. He shouldn't be able to do this. Look, three touches he takes here.
13:00One, two, three. Joe Gomez gets dragged across, and Michalosin, Soboslai doesn't tuck in. I think if he doesn't strike it, because he scuffs it, I think that's why it goes in, actually. Yeah, of course it does. You know, when he gets set up here by Colin Warnie, if he hits it well, I think he could go past the post. But, you know, he's created that for himself. You know, today he's been a handful, like we've been saying. And you know what? this could be something that then turns the season around, but they've got to build on this again. They can't just sit back now. They've got to go into the next game and build on this, build on the momentum and take this into that next game.
13:35Yeah, it's only a good point depending on what happens next, particularly against Nottingham Forest. It's a great point though, Kelly. They're on a run of five defeats. They've won three points from the last possible 30. Coming here today, I didn't give them a hope. I have to be honest. I looked at the team. I thought, how can this team get a result today? They've been spineless in every aspect of playing football. But now it's going to be interesting. It's kept them managing because you'd have had all that turmoil. I think if they'd have lost today, they'd have had to get rid of Igor Tudor. Right, who do we bring in?
14:01Is that going to actually change what we're doing right now? They've got two huge games, Atletico Madrid and then Nottingham Forest at home. Now, can you somehow get some points to keep yourself and get yourself out of this horrendous predicament they've found themselves in? So it will be interesting. Does he stick to the same two centre-backs? Does he bring Romero back in and Van Der Ven, who have been awful lately? They haven't really shown a lot of quality. I think your discipline hasn't helped. So he's got a few decisions to make. But one thing I for sure I would do is keep those two strikers up there.
14:28Because I think that gave him a platform, Roy, didn't it? And it gave him an outlet for players. And Liverpool struggled to deal with it. And generally Spurs, you always think there's a softness to them. But that physicality, the two players up front were huge. Were a huge bonus today for Spurs. And it was an outlet. They were knocking people over. And between now and the end of the season, but then battles they have every week. Nick Forrest, our next league game, huge, huge. We'll talk about what the future means, what that means for the future of Tottenham Hotspur and for Igor Tudor between now and eight o 'clock.
15:01Next, though, we're going to take a look back at that game from Liverpool's perspective and we'll revisit that free kick. Another beauty from Dominic Sobbers-like.

15:54Meanwhile, Liverpool were 1-0 up against struggling Tottenham Hotspur and only took a point from the game at home. Let's get some reaction now with Patrick Davison. Well, Dom, to put it bluntly, is that just a huge disappointment? Yeah, it is. What happened with the performance? I don't know, to be honest. Really, nothing to say. Again, in the last minute, I don't know how many times it happened in the season already. Really, I don't know what to say. We have to wake up. Do you just feel so flat, stood here now? Because I am. Because at the end, we have to, as I say, we have to wake up because it's nine, eight, nine games to go.
16:45I really don't know. and if we keep going like this next season, we should be happy if we play conference league. Why do you think it keeps happening? I don't know. If I would know the answer, then probably I would tell the guys and we would change it. But I don't know. Honestly, honestly, I don't know. It's a huge part of the frustration that a lot of the failings are familiar. They seem to happen week after week. The late goals being a key example, the play getting a bit slow being another example? Well, I think in the first half we played very well. We controlled the whole game. I guess they hardly created any chance.
17:28Maybe they had one or two headers, but I think we were under control. And second half, it seems that we go out. And I don't know. We just don't do the same things like in the first half. And the question is why? but probably we'll sit down together. And this is the most difficult time, but we have to stick together. The boos from the supporters full-time, do they, rare at this place, really hurt to hear? I didn't hear the boos, but obviously we can understand them because last season we became champion and this season we are not performing in a way that we should be. but I think they should stand behind us because last season when we were champions, four games before the end, everybody was happy.
18:22So support us now when we are in a difficult time. Can you wake up in time? It's still there to qualify for the Champions League and of course this season's Champions League with the game you have in midweek. Of course, there's always, not always time, but there's still time to show how much we want. we have to stay together we have to fight for each other we have to fight for the club because everybody want to play Champions League next season Thank you Thanks Jamie, significant that he used the phrase wake up about the performances when the phrase that's been used here and in commentary was sleepwalking about Liverpool's defence in particular Yeah, defence but also I think from an attacking point of view Kelly, they go 1-0 up and you think they just put the foot on the gas they could win this game comfortably 2-3 even the subs that come on And Eketike's been magnificent this year, but he came on, he didn't show any real desire or energy to make something happen, get himself a goal.
19:14I think that epitomised the performance. Salah come on, done a few bits, but he looks like he hasn't got the pace that he had last year, the goals that he had last year. Everything just seems missing in the energy in midfield. And defensively, when you look at that goal, I think it epitomises Liverpool defensively all season. You know, individual mistakes, not strong enough winning the second ball. And then when you can see the goal like that, when you should be thinking, right, no matter what happens here, If we don't win 2-0 or 3-0, we make sure we win 1-0. And I think that was just too easy from Tottenham's point of view to get that last goal.
19:44And they have to be careful. But they're still right in the Champions League race. Make no mistake. You know, look at Chelsea. There's no one revealing any momentum apart from Manchester United who had a great result today. You know, Chelsea don't have that momentum. Aston Villa are struggling. So all they have to do is find a little bit of form. They're certainly not out of this top four, top five race. But they have to win games like today for sure. Yeah, there's a few teams that are sort of limping a little bit towards the end of the season. But equally, actually, at the same time, it's a missed opportunity given that Aston Villa and Chelsea both lost their games this weekend.
20:18This was a chance for them to try and get themselves a foothold in it. Yeah, and they would have seen that as well, seeing Chelsea lose yesterday. Obviously, it would have come through that Aston Villa lost again today. It's massively disappointing for them today. You know, the way they went about it, and obviously they got themselves 1-0 ahead, and all signs were there that they would come back out and get the second goal. But you've got to do things in the right way, in the right manner and if you don't get that second goal, like Jamie said, you see out of the game and win 1-0. But Tottenham were very good in the second half and I think Liverpool allowed them to be very good with the defensive fraughties that Liverpool actually showed.
20:54The goal in itself, there's so many errors there. So Bozla is way out of position. Vicario is taking a long free kick and you're standing way out. you need to be tucked back inside. You know, the header as well from Robertson, then Van Dijk, and it just mounts up Joe Gomez and obviously Richardson coming back here as an Everton player as well. You know, for him, it was a fantastic day. But like we say, Liverpool are always going to be in this Champions League race and they're always going to be there, but they've got to start turning things into positivity and the inconsistency they've been showing is far too often.
21:32it's now they need to be at the back end of this season last eight or nine games to get points on the table to get himself looking further up when they get opportunities like this with Chelsea losing Aston Villa losing you've got to take that and today they just didn't there are moments and there was a moment for Dominic Soberslay when he scored the free kick we've seen him do that so many times this is fourth of the season Jamie yeah and we've seen we've said it half time Kelly he's becoming a master he's got this beautiful technique He gets sort of like top spin. He gets on it and it's dipping.
22:05This one, I just can't help but look at the goalkeeper. He takes his step. His foot pattern is wrong. Almost like a negative step to start. He takes a little one there and another little one instead of making one big step. And it's just completely wrong. If you see someone trying to do the high jump, they're not going to go small steps, are they? They're going to make big steps to get that trajectory so you can get up and reach for it. He doesn't do that. But I will also say, and he's been poor, he made an unbelievable save, I think, from Gakpo to keep his side in it, you know, and he just poured it onto the post.
22:33They're big moments. So in fairness to him, he reacted well and kept his side in the game when he needed him. Yeah, Vicario does not have a good record in terms of trying to stop shots from outside the area. But for Dominic Soberslay, of the 16 that have been scored in the Premier League so far this season, he's got four of them, which is one short of David Beckham and Lauren Robert, who've got five. And, you know, there are a clutch of players who've got four goals direct from a free kick over the previous seasons. But it's gone really well for Dominic Sobersi, at least in that side of the game.
23:08Yeah, he's been Liverpool's best player by an absolute mile, Kelly. But we should also say that he's conceded, Vicario, 11 goals from outside the box, and the next highest on there is seven. So we know that he's not strong from those long-range efforts. What he has done is keep Spurs in the game at times, though, Jamie. Absolutely, this is huge. This really was. because you felt at this point in the match, Liverpool go two and up, could be four, could be five, because obviously they are so frail. But that is a brilliant save. It's unbelievable when you look at it from behind the goal because he has to be strong, he has to be alive.
23:42His confidence is a bit low from the one that he conceded before. Liverpool work it well. Gakpo doesn't take it, he just gets it out of his feet and strikes it. Look at this here, he's moving to his left. Then he takes that step there and just look at that. That's beautiful. That is an excellent save that's kept his side in the game. And you could talk about the ones that he hasn't made. When you're struggling, his confidence is low. He's obviously not playing in midweek. Then he comes out to come back onto the pitch. You need that. And they're going to need him to make a lot of saves like that before the end of the season.
24:09Because as much as this is a good point, Spurs have still got an awful lot to do. They've won two home games. You start to think, well, OK, the home games, they've got Notching and Forest at home. They've beaten Brentford and Burnley this season. They've got to try and find some ways to get some home form going. Otherwise, they're still banging trouble. And just to go back to Dominic Soberslay's interview, he seemed at a loss to work out what the way to fix it was. He seemed at a loss to explain what was going wrong for Liverpool. Well, they've defend better. Defend better. The goal they gave away in his position for an experienced player.
Read the full transcript
24:39I know people say it's not his natural position. You can't be on the outside looking back in. You've got to get back in. You've got experienced defenders. Get back in. You're 1-0 up. We're under the cosh. We've already throwed the season, conceded a lot of late goals. So take your 1-0 victory and you move on. so the goals when players get interviewed afterwards they say well if I knew the problem I can see the problems defend better have more desire would it be Robson with your headers your two centre halves from a free kick from a goalkeeper that's exactly where you've got to be tucked in so there's have they lost that bit of there's definitely something missing at Liverpool obviously they're way off it their performance today you go one and up you're thinking come on Liverpool this is your chance to flex your muscles but there's a bit of there's definitely tension in the stadium there's nervousness there's something they miss with Liverpool where it'd be obviously the players obviously issues with the manager whatever but recruitment that's not that's not really panned out the way they hoped and there could be issues with that obviously in one or two injuries like every other club out there but Liverpool have got to have a good look in the mirror and say listen let's get back to that fight and desire that we had last year when we were scoring the late goals and winning these tight games now they're coming even that we were here a month or so ago against City and they found a way to lose that even though they had good chance in the second half so yeah they're players need to take responsibility because the goal they gave away is schoolboy stuff

26:57Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League Podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game.
27:08Tottenham take a point from Anfield, a late, late goal from Richarlison to earn them a share of the spoils. And it's Igor Tudor's first point as Tottenham Hotspur head coach. And it's an important one because the teams around them, also involved in the relegation fight, all managed to get a point this weekend. Wolves, of course, still in action on Monday Night Football, but Spurs needed that to stay out of the bottom three. Here is Igor Tudor with Patrick Davison. Igor, you said before the game, no crying, we need fight. Did you get that fight? Yeah, yeah, we get that. We get that. See the situation, what it was with 12 players in the pitch.
27:55Amazing, incredible point we take here. Deserving. I think we show the spirit. We show the team spirit. So congratulations to the guys. And how, what would you say about the players showing that spirit in the circumstances you've faced, particularly this week? Yeah, I agree with the circumstances. It's very difficult even to explain the circumstances because you prepare in one-two training one thing and then in this morning Conor said that he's not able to play so you need to change the players, the positions and everything. So, this moment is really strange but what I said before to the player, even more challenging to show who you are as an individual and we as a team.
28:41So that was the goal. And the players, I liked them very much. They were really, really amazing. So, I mean, now that the game's done, can you tell us about how you had to change and adapt tactics in the build-up to this match? It looked like you went basically 4-4-2 and tried to simplify things for the players? In the infancy, we played like that. In attack, you tried to do something different. But in this moment, it's very difficult to work on any kind of structure in attacks. So we need to simplify. Otherwise, it can be even more difficult for the players. So the moment is that. The style of football is that.
29:21What is it? But I think it's a good start. What was better today? And would you say that's the best your team have played since you took charge a month ago? What I already said, the team spirit was amazing. they were very honest to give everything today what they have in this particular moment this was the main demand and then in the end the quality is there otherwise you don't stay in the game and you don't take a point in this stadium against this team If you're enjoying this podcast there are plenty more from Sky Sports we think you'll love too there's the Gary Neville podcast for Gary's immediate reaction to the biggest matches.
30:06Transfer Talk has the latest on all the big moves in and out of the Premier League and beyond. And for WSL fans, check out Pitch to Pod with Jordan Nobbs and Nikita Paris. Just search for Sky Sports wherever you get your podcasts. For now, though, let's get back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast.
30:35Nottingham Forest with a goalless draw against Fulham. It could have been even better for them. They had a goal disallowed for offside by the narrowest of margins from Ndoy. But it was an important point because it takes them back out of the bottom three. Leeds United down to ten men for the second half of their game against Crystal Palace. They missed a penalty. Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit it wide. and yet they held on to earn a point. You can tell how satisfied their fans were with that performance. In terms of Champions League qualification, huge game between Manchester United and Aston Villa.
31:11Manchester United with a 3-1 victory in that game. Goals for Casemiro, Cunha and Seshko.
31:21And let's see what that means for the table. Manchester United now three points clear of Aston Villa in fourth place. Then it's Liverpool, five points behind Manchester United. Then Chelsea, a point again behind Liverpool as they fight for essentially top four, but very likely top five for Champions League football come the end of next season. If that's how it finishes, and I know you've said Manchester United shouldn't rush into a decision about Michael Carrick. They finished in third place this season from where they finished last season, from where they were when he came in and they put in that kind of performance against their Champions League rivals.
32:00Did they seriously consider giving him the job? I would have thought so, yeah. Would you? No. Why not? I think there's better options out there. I think the games where he's come in in terms of winning football matches, he's done a very good job. He's obviously simplified things, but there's been no jeopardy in other games. He's had three weeks to prepare for the matches. it's been good timing for him to go in there and he's done a very good job. I take my hat off. I mean, if he does get the job in the summer, he'll say, listen, good luck to you. But I think there's far better options out there for the next manager of Man United.
32:36If Carrick had been mentioned three months ago, he would have been locked up to be the next United manager. We would have said he wasn't even the reckoning. But timing, he's got the opportunity to do a very good job there. I don't think, well, I think there's better options out there. Simple as that, but he's done a very good job. United are searching out to be in the Champions League, of course. But United, obviously, making the decisions, there will have to go out and interview people and see what's out there. If he's winning games, if he has a really experienced backroom staff, which he has, that have experience at England level, if the fans love him, if the players as we're hearing and as we'll say publicly, love having him around the ground and he's turned things around for Manchester United, why is there a better option?
33:17Most players do like a caretaker manager. It's different when he comes in, then he's got to make decisions about contracts and pre-season and medical staff and he's involved in all that, transfers and recruitment. His job the last few months obviously has been to win football matches. I know that's a manager's job anyway, but he's not had any distractions even as a manager. Of course, he's done it. I give him credit for that. But if he's given a job, then there's different responsibilities for him. And I think to manage a Man United, I think you need someone a lot more experienced in terms of winning trophies, competing in Europe and he hasn't got that he might have it in a few years and he might be in the mix then but the fact he's winning football matches at the moment of course gives him a great chance but I think if he becomes permanent manager and all this chat that everyone loves him you know I don't know if they were loving him last week when they couldn't beat Newcastle with 10 men you know there's a game you can look at and I'll just go well what happened there he beat Aston Villa today Aston Villa was shocking absolute shocking the more I look at Aston Villa I'm thinking they'll be missing out in Europe how bad they've been today so the timing was good for United for today's game, Ville on the back of a European game, and United, because they were so bad at the start of the season, they got no distractions.
34:26Remember, this is the same group of players that finished 15th. So everyone else can get giddy about my United being third in the league. I don't. I'm not one of them. I don't get all excited for stuff like that. I get excited when teams are winning trophies and competing week in, week out. So I'm not one to get too giddy. I know. Ashley, what would you do? If he's going to keep going the way that he's going, I think you do give him the job. I'm going differently to what Roy's saying. Good luck. I think the way that... You have the right to be right. I'm all right, no problem. You know, I think the way that he's gone back into Man United, he's just simplified everything.
35:08And I think if he does go from caretaker manager to permanent manager, I don't think courage changes. I think he stays the same way. You know, like you've seen him, he's gone to the FA Youth Cup, he's done stuff for the foundation. He's got fans, you know, hoping again. If anybody had said Man United were going to be competing to get in Champions League months ago, you would have been crazy because there was no way they was going to do that. He's gone back to a simple formation. He's put players in the right positions. And also, he's got fans, he's got the players wanting to run, wanting to play.
35:44OK, at times, it's not a Man United team that, you know, he's going to have a lot of possession. and we've seen him play counter-attacking football. But, you know, they've been used to that. He hasn't got a lot of time to, you know, work on the training pitch. He's got to go and win games. Like Roy said, of course, that's what he's got to do. And, you know, it changes from caretaker manager to when you become the manager. But for what he's done in this short space of time, and of course there's so much more to come, if he keeps on producing results, because right now it's just results, I'm sure if he gets the permanent manager's job next season he then will go, right, this is how a Manchester United team is supposed to look and we're going to dominate the ball.
36:24We'll play counter-attack when we need to. We're going to sit in a block where we're going to find it hard for teams to break us down, which he has done, and then use the players, use the transfer window. Like I said, if he gets the manager's job, use the transfer window. But like I said, the staff that he's got, Steve Holland, it was clever bringing him in. He's got so much experience. you know he needs to to lean on them um like say he's gonna have to make more and more decisions around the club but you know i think for what he's done and you know i i don't see anybody else out there right now if there's a big profile manager i think the only one you say is if you're not going to give cows the job you're going after a luis enrique for me but to be honest i don't think luis enrique is going to leave psg to come to many nights so it would take a lot for him to to come there.
37:12So I think you give Caras the job and you let him do what he's doing. Do you see if he's the best option for all the managers on the planet? Everyone's who's pushing for him. It helps that he's English. So that's good for the media, a bit of spin. Another English coach coming through and apparently Caras got friends, he's friends with everybody, which is fine. But if people honestly think he's the best option, but if anyone thinks he's the best option, where would you go? There's loads of options out there. So we all sitting here, ex-football people saying there's not better options than Michael Caras.
37:41I'm asking who they would be. There's loads of options. You go and get the best. Carrick's not the best. Option for Man United. Simple as... You tried what you called the best and it hasn't worked before. I say. We've got a bunch of them. You've come in, you've got Mourinho at the time, Van Gaal. You've tried everything. So one's come in that probably knows the club better than most. He's done a great job so far. If he gets the third, I think it'd be really hard not to give it to him. And if they do give him the job, yeah, good luck to him. And if he does the business the next few years, United winning league title, I'll happily sit there and go, listen, I got it wrong.
38:13No problem. But I believe there's better options out there. Would the note of caution be around Oli Gunnar Solskjaer or do you think that Michael Carrick is different? I think he's different. And I said that at the time when I say it again. Oli didn't feel right. Would you mention Michael Carrick three months ago? No, of course I wouldn't, Roy. But I'll tell you one thing. I would say right now I'll give him a mention. You think seven or eight games is enough to become the permanent manager of Man United? No, probably not. But we're talking about what he's done right now and he's got him into third.
38:42And I don't see an abundance of elite managers out there that are jumping out. We're talking about the quality of the Premier League in the last 12 months. And I know that's not his fault. He can only beat what's in front of him. We've seen how bad Liverpool are. We've seen how inconsistent Chelsea are. We've seen how bad Villa were today. So this lady of United finishing third, I'm looking going, well, yeah. What is the big game of that? So the people that are getting mentioned, Unai Emery. Today, he beats Unai Emery. And if we're talking about, I know it's obviously over a season, but he's done a great job.
39:09that doesn't do you any harm. People talk about Thomas Tuchel. Thomas Tuchel will be, if England win the World Cup, he'll have any job he wants in the world. If we come limping out, we make the last 16 and we don't do very well, his star is so low, he doesn't get the job. So it can change so quickly. I don't see, I said earlier on, and Donny Arreola, for me, is an elite manager. Does experience come into it for you? You're saying what these other managers have done are they might have difficult spells over next year, but Carrick on the back of maybe 12, 13, 14, really good results, deserves it more than the lands we've just mentioned.
39:40No, probably not. But you're asking me, will he get it? I think if he gets the third, I think he makes it incredibly hard for them. Do you think it's the responsibility of the Man United decision-makers to go out and get the best in the industry? Yeah, but like we're saying, who is the best in the industry? For United's point of view, there's obviously good options out there. You go and find who you think is the best and go and get them. They've done that with Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo. You go and get the best. Who's the coaches then? Go on, name them. There's lots, there's lots. Simone? Enrique? But they don't leave them all.
40:10But you go and seek. As I said, you go and try and find and get the best. There's loads out there. Tuchel, you've just mentioned. Tuchel's only going to be as good as the World Cup. If they don't do well in the World Cup. But he's just signed a new deal anyway with England. Don't get me wrong. But you still have to go look for the best options. It's like when you're looking for a midfielder as a club. You go and try and get the best midfielder. You don't get one who's maybe come and loan for five, six games. He's the one. That's your responsibility. If they go out and try and suss these managers out, and they all come back and they want 25, 30 million a year, you go, no, no, yeah, I get it.
40:38But the responsibility of the board surely is to go, let's go and get the best in or in. That's available to Man United. That's it. Well, you've played under really experienced managers and you've also played under newer managers. You've been a new manager, you've been a manager with more experience. When you talk about Manchester United going out and buying the best and one of the main criteria that you think is different from what Michael Carrick offers is experience, what comes with that, that a Manchester United manager needs to have? What does experience bring you? Your profile, your CV, your experience have been in tough situations.
41:12I think there's been no pressure on Carrick the last month or two. Are the players? There's been no jeopardy in their games. They've won a few games and people are all getting carried away for Man United to get in the Champions League position. But if somebody comes, if Carrick gets the job in the summer, what's his remit? I'm guessing to win the league tight in the next year or two. I'm pretty sure it would be. And are we all going to sit there and go, yeah we think he's capable of doing I don't think he is so I think that experience must come into it so when you're Ancelotti for example you said who's out so just if Ancelotti walks in the summer and he's chatting to the players I'm sure they're going this is a guy who's won loads of stuff and if Carrick's the manager in the summer and he's coming back and Casemiro's gone he's making decisions on Maguire it's a different vibe at the club then they won't be seeing him as this nice guy he'll have to make tough decisions and that's where the challenge is coming from but if he does all that and he produces and he starts winning trophies the next year or two I'll tell you what, I didn't see that coming.
42:05I didn't see that coming. But people like Ancelotti, when you're a player and a manager walks in your dressing room, I played under Brian Clough for Alex, when they're coming to your dressing room, they walk in and you go, oh yeah, I like this. Now you're talking. Has Carrick got that huge respect amongst the players? Maybe they have because he's a nice guy and all this, but I'm on about bringing a CV with you. You go, oh, here we go. Now you're talking. We're going places with this guy, with his staff. And I'm not saying Carrick and his staff aren't qualified to do, sessions, of course they are.
42:34And he has brought experienced coaches with him, of course. And I've had, sometimes you have a bit of banter and a bit of humour with people when you're doing podcasts or whatever, but he's a proper serious football player. I get that. But if you ask me, do I think United will get back to winning league titles the next year or two with Carrick and his staff? The answer's no. But I'd love to be proven wrong. I love it. That team, by the way, that team still needs investment. So whoever comes in is going to have to buy some players as well. So if they do believe that Michael's the right manager, he's still going to need to get some plugs and holes they needed elite central midfielder there's no pressure on this team this team there's been no pressure on them what pressure has there been can you win a few football matches imagine if they're at the top of the table you're going we have to win today a bit like Man City the weekend you can't slip up this group of players hasn't shown any that over the last year or two this group of players finished 15 last year so when your when your expectations is so low and everyone gets carried away with third or fourth I don't that's not my scene but everyone's getting carried away with it no problem as I said I'll repeat myself, if he gets the job, good luck to him.
43:34But there's definitely a better option out there that United have to look at. If it doesn't work out, he's proven he can win a few football matches. Let's see if he can win some titles. Manchester United at Bournemouth on Friday night, live on Sky Sports. You're in the studio for that one. That's another one for him. You beat him. He's a corporate. You just mentioned him. I brought his contracts up, isn't it? Big fan. I love him. Is he a good option, for example? You just said to me, name some options. Absolutely. Is he one? Yeah, I said that. I'll say that again. I said it two minutes ago. Are they speaking to him?
44:02I don't know. But should they speak to him? Yeah, I would, yeah. Because I think he's elite. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I said it two minutes ago and I'll say it again. You can talk more about this on Friday night. You can argue remotely. And then we can have a little bit of peace in there. We've got a crew who are about to go into overtime. So we're going to head off now. It's been a really busy day in the Premier League today. And there is still more to come. Monday Night Football. There'll be lots of reflection on what's already happened this weekend. But then the game itself is Brentford against Wolves.
44:32It's Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher, 6.30 on Sky Sports Premier League. And then next Sunday, have a look at this. Newcastle against Sunderland. Aston Villa against West Ham. Spurs back in action with that big game we've talked about against Nottingham Forest. And a Carabao Cup final between Arsenal and Manchester City. You can watch all of that next weekend. Today, though, it's been all about the football. It's been all about Champions League places and about what's happened at the bottom. It's been young, keen and in a league of its own today. We'll see you next time. Bye bye.
