Transcript
Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:28This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Aston Villa very much in this three-way battle for the title and it's Oli Watkins who's rescued them in their Christmas program coming off the bench to hit two and turn around this game against Chelsea of whom they now move ten points clear they are up there on the shoulders of Manchester City and the leaders Arsenal who they play next on Oli Watkins 30th birthday but the celebrations for him today are clear and present because in a game that for Villa didn't promise much in the first half when they conceded to a Rhys James corner turned in by Xiao Pedro it was transformed by a triple substitution from Unai Emery and Cole Palmer dejected when he was taken off pretty much sums up the mood here at Chelsea at the moment because Villa have moved further clear of them and restated their own credentials to stay up there this season with Arsenal and with City.
1:35It has finished here at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea 1, Aston Villa 2. And it's a win that has equaled the all-time club record of 11 successive wins for Aston Villa. From a goal down, Steve, to winning it 2-1. Did you expect it? Well no not at all, not at half time, when we've done the analysis and the way we see Aston Villa play in the first half they were very very poor, couldn't get out of their own half, you know with their four complete passes in the final third. But you know in football when the score is 1-0 and me and Jamie have been on a team, when we've experienced this, you're just waiting for that one moment, just a half chance, just a bit of play to give yourself a bit of confidence and that's all this Aston Villa team needs and we see that and they just built on that and grew and grew.
2:22and this Villa team doesn't know when it's beaten. They are superb and the movement that they are on, they are fully in the fast lane at the moment. How much, Jamie, does it tell you about the reaction in that second half from this Aston Villa team? Absolutely. It showed they've got quality, it showed they've got real character but they've also got Ollie Watkins. That was one of the great impacts on the sub in Premier League history. Honestly, the way that he'd come on, he'd changed the whole complexion of the match. Obviously, Jadon Sancho had an impact and Inanna But those three subs, especially him, it was absolutely incredible.
2:55They couldn't handle him, couldn't handle his pace, his skill, his aggression. It was a brilliant intervention from him and he completely changed that game around. It was amazing. It was because I think Steve's right. First off, you couldn't see anything else. But this side right now has a confidence and a belief about itself. And when you're bringing on subs, they're not coming on with the arm. They're not thinking, oh, I'm not involved. I don't want to run around. They're coming on knowing they're going to make a difference. and that was amazing for him. Absolutely top class. I'm really looking forward to talking to him and seeing what his thoughts were because you don't know players about not being involved, not happy about not playing, but he was amazing today.
3:30You can see the celebrations from the Aston Villa players and what it means to them, but will Chelsea be questioning how they let that go in the second half? It sums Chelsea up. I mean, look, you talk about a team, you know, people are saying they're a few years away from even challenging for the title, but they've not won consecutive back-to-back home games to the Premier League this season. I mean, for a team that's trying to cement themselves in the top four, that's not good enough for Chelsea Football Club. And that's just been the story of them, you know, from the start to now. So, listen, they'll be kicking themselves.
4:01First half, they were brilliant. You know, they created chances. They strangled Aston Villa. The game plan worked really well. They needed one more goal. They didn't get that goal.
4:14Well, Oli Watkins, certainly very happy at full time. came on as a substitute and certainly made a very, very big impact. I'm delighted to say we can speak to Oli Watkins live now. Oli, congratulations. That must have felt like a really big win tonight. Yeah, amazing. Amazing win. Obviously, for me personally, to come on and score two goals is a great feeling. But, you know, to keep up this run and to come away here and to beat Chelsea at a tough place is amazing. It's the word to sum it up really. What were you thinking when you were watching the first half, you were on the bench and what did the manager say to you when you were brought on?
4:56What kind of impact did he want you to make? He changed it because Chelsea were going man for man, but they had the extra centre back when we were going long. So when I came on second half, he brought Sancho on the wing and Morgan and I think it gave us a little bit more space and then put Yuri in the number 10. So we had an extra body up there and yeah, tactical genius I would say. Ollie, Steve, Sidwell, congrats on the victory today. I just want to dive into your own personal sort of headspace. You've probably not been as clinical this season as you've been in and the standards that you've set in previous seasons, but you never seem to get flustered.
5:42You've got a real calmness in your personality on the pitch and off the pitch. And I said at the start of the show that you probably had a bit of fire in your belly when you was watching from the bench to come on and do what you've done. So just to see where you're at at the moment in your own game. Yeah, obviously not where I want to be. As a striker, you want to be scoring every game. So if you're not doing that, then you want to be playing well and helping the team. I feel like I've had some good performances this year, but maybe not at the standard that I've set for myself and put a bit of pressure on myself.
6:15And yeah, the highs and lows of football, you know how it is. You've played the game. So yeah, I haven't been where I wanted to be, but I can use this as a marker now and push on from here for the back end of the season. Oli, Jamie, Redham, let's talk about the highs of football, because that's as good as, obviously, the way you came onto that pitch and made such a difference, it was absolutely incredible. Amazing, as you said. So let's talk through the first goal. It felt like you had a really good piece of passage of play just before the goal and then you got a little bit of confidence and obviously you coming onto the pitch made a massive difference and that confidence came from there.
6:54Just talk us through this goal. Yeah, I think I just tried to stay in between the centre-backs. obviously Morgan's found me here. My touch, I felt it was a little bit heavy. Look, I've got a nice little ricochet off me but sometimes you need that luck. It's hard to obviously turn and hold off a strong centre-back like that. Yeah, I can't say that's a classy finish at the end of the day because it's just hit me off my knee but I'll take it all day long. You get your left arm up there, Ollie, just and that makes such a difference, just to give you that half a yard and that you get you you deserve that bit of luck yeah yeah and you have to put yourself in that position to to obviously get that um and then building off that uh you know i felt a lot more confident um grew into the game i had some other opportunities as well and um and then yeah i think the second one's a lot better than the first well here we go i can see that smile on your face talk us through it because obviously comes from a corner you end up in a nice area really and i I think Marlon Gusteau's marking you.
7:55You probably can't believe you're luckier. Yeah, I felt like they were stood off us. Obviously, they had a lot of chances from our own corners. They were countering and stuff like that. But I've just gave him a little shove. And he wasn't marking me too tightly. So, yeah, it's basically a free header. And, yeah, it's nice to see that not roll into the corner, but float into the corner. And, yeah, it was a nice moment for me. And a great header. and this sets you up nicely for obviously a really difficult game against Arsenal, but have you got that feeling at the moment of almost invincibility?
8:30You think that it doesn't matter if you go a goal behind, I think that's 18 points from losing positions or 17 points now that you've got. You feel like you could beat anybody at the moment? Yeah, I feel like teams are worried about us. You know, they're thinking, oh, we've got Villa next. Even if we may not play the prettiest football at times because we're sat behind the ball and just defending, but they know we're going to eventually cause them problems when we do string a few passes together and grow into the game. So we're taking each game as it comes and just focusing on ourselves, really.
9:05Obviously, there's a lot of talk about us, people asking the question of winning the title and stuff like that, but, you know, that's a long way away, and we're just focusing on the next game. Oli, you've got Arsenal coming up next, which we've said. It is on your 30th Thursday, though, so how much are you looking forward to that game? Yeah, really looking forward to it. A lot of family coming to it. I've got a lot of family that support them so they can be in the other end and hopefully watch me have the same outcome tonight in a couple of days. Oli, thank you so much for your time. Well done today.
9:41Well done, Oli. Thank you very much. Cheers, guys. Thank you. Well, really good to hear from Oli Watkins there. It's interesting, isn't it, what the players will be feeling like, especially with Aston Villa, this run that they're going on, the confidence. He said it's still the early days to start talking about a title race, but they're absolutely in it. Yeah, and they're full of confidence right now. There's no better place as a footballer or as a coach. Every substitution you make, you feel like you've got a chance of it paying off. And obviously, three substitutions that you made had a massive impact on the game.
10:10In terms of winning the title, I'm a massive fan. Massive fan of the manager of the players, you just worry if they've got the strong enough squad. I think the January transfer window is going to be a really important one for them. If they can go and acquire a couple of players and just beef that squad up, I think they possibly could have a chance. I just feel that right now, Arsenal and Man City are just a bit ahead of them. And that's not because I don't want any hate from Aston Villa fans. I'm just saying that's how I see it. I think they've done amazingly well. And to the players, the system and everything that the manager does.
10:38And one thing for sure with him, he knows how to win. He knows how to win competitions. He's an incredible, he's a master tactician and a brilliant manager. Yeah, absolutely. All right, then let's have a look at what changed for Aston Villa then when Unai Emery made that triple substitution because not long after that, they had a really good chance. Well, we said that we'd like, Jay, you've heard the video. We said that at the start, you just need something to start, you know, a catalyst, whether it's a chance, a half chance, a corner, and they get the substitutions and then this is the chance really that gives them the impetus to go on and have a bit of belief and confidence in this game.
11:11Yeah, but you mentioned it, Steve, just after the game finished and sometimes you need just a passage of play don't you and they obviously chose you in a good position and they lose it and this is probably the first time in the match where a little bit of space opened up every time they got it they'd lost it all of a sudden you've got players like Jadon Sancho Morgan Rodgers on this side and then they work it really well Steve and they pass it with like purpose with force precision and detail and that is what you need to get up the pitch and then when you do that and you've got willing runners to get in behind like Kamara does as well now what a goal that would have been at a time where they was probably really on their knees so that then just sparked that little bit of life into them and just go we're well and truly in this game now It was amazing really I think from the manager's point of view because what happens when you make great substitutions it looks like wow that's incredible what he's done and if you didn't know better you'd think I tell you what we're going to do lads first half we're going to be terrible we're going to be absolutely useless and in second half we're going to come out and make a couple of substitutions we're going to win this game but obviously that hasn't happened because he's a much better manager than that but they were so off it in the first half.
12:12The system didn't really work. I didn't feel that Morgan Rodgers playing as a sort of a 4-4-2 alongside Marlon didn't work for me. And then he changed it and he made some important substitutions and then you start to get players, what I would call, starting to play in their best position. Now, straight away, that automatically looks like a better system for me. You've got Jadon Sancho out on the right. You've got Tielemans just behind Ollie Watkins. I think it suits Tielemans. He found it really difficult playing here in the first half because he was having to get attracted with Cole Palmer, kept having the run that way.
12:43So you've got Inanna and Kamara, and then you've got Morgan Rodgers in a position. Steve mentioned this right at the top of the show, and he's exactly right. Off that left-hand side, where he can just drift into these areas here, into these pockets, obviously what happens is Badia Shield gives away the ball really cheaply, but then once that happens, it just shows what Aston Villa do really, really well. Straight away, you've got a nice shape there. Now, Inanna's got that one. He knows that pass is going to get played into me. Now, the key is this and this. You've got two players. Once that ball changes hands, they need to narrow up really quickly.
13:17Does Chalibur get across quickly enough? No. Rhys James is thinking from a forward perspective, if that ball gets played out to me, I can get up the line. We can get Neto in the game. We've got a chance to score in. But because, as Steve mentioned before, they've got their tails up. Now the ball gets played. He wins it right now. Can we get this into our best player? Absolutely. I will just take that back because I love what he does there. It's so important. Just watch how he checks his shoulder. He knows now. Just checks to the right. Have I got time? Yes, absolutely. Now, Morgan Rodgers, sorry, Ollie Watkins does really well because he's got his body shape there.
13:50He's got his back to him really at the moment. But then what he does is open his body shape up. Now that he will want that ball, if possible, just played into this space. And watch how quickly Ollie Watkins changes his foot pattern. Chalabar doesn't narrow up. It gets to him, but obviously Oli Watkins does so well. Now, that pace of pass has to be fast. It gets it into him on the half term. Yes, element of luck, but that was how the game changed. And that little bit of play was so key, Steve, wasn't it? It's just how Villa really set up. They go with that sort of box midfield where they just sort of see more and more and more compact.
14:22And then the presence of just Inanna, you know, there. And then this is the area. You know, we spoke about this area at the top of the show, like you said. that when he gets in this position, Rodgers, you know he can cause damage. And like you said there, Ollie Watkins, as soon as Rodgers secures the pass, secures the ball, Rodgers knows that he can then get on his bike. And yeah, the first touch did get away from him, but the left arm to get out because Trevor's a real strong boy as well. And that's the luck that he needs sometimes. But like I say, he's not been hitting the standards in the form that he set in previous seasons, but he carries on doing the exact same run.
14:57doesn't go from what's given him success in previous games. And the pass, I think, from Morgan Rodgers looks a relatively simple one, but it's not. It has to be perfect. It has to be fast. It has to be at the right pace. And then it gives Ollie Watkins the chance to get it under his spell. He mentioned it was a poor first. I didn't think it was, really. It was a hard one because Chalabar's coming. But that left arm is everything, isn't it? He just gives him that moment. And all of a sudden, you're back in the game. and there was only really going to be one winner from there, Pien, because Chelsea are completely gone and Aston Villa, because of that confidence, were in the ascendancy.
15:33Set up from the corner, what do you think, Steve? Well, we was looking at it, wasn't we? Chelsea are in a sort of a zonal, a few players on the zonal, which we see a lot now from different players. Well, let's highlight. So, is it Chalabras at the front post? I think he's probably too far forward there. I think he could do with being a few yards back. You've got Badia Schiel and then you've got De Lapp. And what changed? The substitutions that made, I think, Villa a much bigger side, because you can see Inanna and you can see then, obviously, the players in and around them and Oli Watkins, they make the team just a lot bigger from those situations.
16:05Yeah, I just feel as though there's no one really highlighted on Oli Watkins. Is it Enzo on Inanna there? Is it Casado on Konza? But you look at Oli Watkins and then we'll find that Augusto gets back in time to mark him, but there's no one really set on someone who's just come on, scored a goal, made an impact in the game as well. you're thinking you need to get close to him. I think that tells you everything. I think Gusto's thinking, is that one going to get played back to him? Because Aston Villa don't mind that one and it comes in in a first-time pass. But it doesn't. And then once he gets back in, I don't think he shows any appetite to head it.
16:35I think he almost ducks down because he's worried about what's behind him. And then you can see it. Look, he's looking. OK, now I've got to become like a blocker defender. I'm not really... I don't really want any of this. This isn't for me. It's too easy. He gets pushed out of the way. Doesn't do enough. Just keep your eye on him there. Number 27. Not enough. If you're blocking, because you talk now about blockers and you talk about markers, he's doing neither. And that's no good. In the game, you're one-all. I'll just take that back. Look. One second. Hold on. Just take that back. I just think this sums it up a little bit, really.
17:06Number 27 there. Just keep your eye on him as he jumps. Is that a man that's trying to attack the ball? Watch. Is he trying to attack that? Not really. He's got his head down. He's worried about someone's going to hit him on the back of the head. Unfortunately, you need to hang in there this time. and that really was a massive moment and I've not done enough justice to Oli's header because it was a brilliant goal but he summed it up nicely and then you can just see that confidence and everyone's running away. The fans are involved, they're engaged, they love their team right now. They're in the ascendancy, Steve.
17:35They don't know when they beat this Villa team, they really don't and with the manager at the helm as well, it's just, you know, they've picked up more points from losing positions and dropped the least points from winning positions. That tells you straight away in games and Oli said it there, it's not the most prettiest of times because they sit back and they do suck up you know a lot of possession but when they get their noses in front they know how to keep in front and then when they when they're behind they know how to get to chase and get a goal because that's what they do they're just relentless they'll keep on going to the end and when it gets to 85 minutes 87 minutes they'll go and take the ball to the corner flag you know they'll sort of gain management they'll waste time just to get the win over the line and like I say you know another few results these are well in the mix.
18:15And I think as management as well, I think it helps. Because yes, he changed it, but realising, I've got it maybe wrong in the first half. I don't know what he's going to say and whether he'll get asked the question, but I felt first half, it didn't work. It wasn't working. So then you have to change it. You look at the system. Oli said they went man for man. Yes, they did. But it wasn't even so much that. It's just they started to play a little bit. And you've got players in their right positions. That's football. If you play too many players in the wrong position, you're not going to get success.
18:40Second, last half an hour of the game, people started to play. Morgan Rodgers, the most important player, exciting player, the one that makes you tick, come into that position, Pien, and all of a sudden everything starts to click. There will be questions being asked of the Chelsea performance in that second half, but they had a really good first half performance and João Pedro able to get the opening goal. Let's have a look at it because there was a brilliant corner actually taken for Rhys James, who said it was his goal. I wonder when he watches it back what he will be thinking, but João Pedro at the end got the touch.
19:08Yeah, and I think we did this at half time, Steve, didn't we? And obviously Martinez, the goalkeeper there, is obviously worth keeping an eye on because he's got a fellow countryman there just behind him and he's causing a real problem, Fernandes. He doesn't know whether to just leave him alone. He ends up having a fight with him. The goal scorer is just there, Jal Pedro. Good delivery that comes in, Steve. And they just get themselves in a bit of a mess. They highlight their keeper. Look, you see, Chalabar first of all, he comes in. Then Enzo obviously has a little go. Then Pedro. So he's never set.
19:38He's never set Martinez at all. And, you know, Brees James has done this call so many times where they just float the ball in. They want to cause carnage. Look how many bodies there are in and around that six-yard box. Look how many players there are around Martinez there. He can never get set. He can never predict where it's going to go because there's so many bodies. It could ricochet. And look, it comes off the shin or the outside leg of Jean-Pedro. But look, he's still fighting. The ball, as it's coming down here, he hasn't even got his arms up. He's not set. He doesn't know where he is. He's flustered by what's going on around him.
20:10Like you say, he's just fighting everyone at the moment. And then before you know it, we get a little bit of luck from Charles Pedro where it comes off and claims the goal. Just comes off the back of his calf just there. The slightest deflection. He'll take that. He needed a goal. And then, as we both said, I think, Steve, they were so much better first half, Chelsea. They were so comfortable. You couldn't really see Aston Villa getting back into this game. But the only reason why you did is because you know how much confidence they've got. and they are an elite team coming back from these positions.
20:41How will Chelsea be feeling after this performance though? Because we spoke before about sort of inconsistency, I suppose, in results. People are expecting more from this Chelsea team. When you see them performing like they did in the first half to then how they performed in the second half, how disappointed will they be? I think it doesn't help in terms of like there's been lots of games and I've seen that inconsistency of the first half against Newcastle. If you flip it, you think, well, they were so poor first half. Second half, they were excellent. And they come into a game now and it just feels like they were so in control.
21:12And then second half, those three substitutions, yes, masterclass from the manager of Aston Villa. But from Chelsea's point of view, you can't all of a sudden just capitulate like you did. I don't remember them creating another real chance, a real opportunity. Esteval had a couple of little moments, but not enough. And that isn't ever really going to get you in a position where you're going to be winning or competing for titles. And of late, things have just gone the other way. and there's no real confidence or belief in the team. Yeah, you feel as though there's a real lack of know-how in games.
21:43Earlier in the season, where they performed so well against Barcelona and Champions League and Arsenal, then they go to Leeds and try and play the same way. You're away at Leeds, you can't do that. It's the same again today. They just need that real clinical edge and a real cutting way of winning games. We know the model with Chelsea. it's going to be youth and giving them experience. I think it's been 90 games since they've played someone that's over the age of 30, which was Thiago Silva. They need someone with an experience hitting that team. Hi, everyone. Tom White here. Welcome to Sky Sports FC, the place to have your say on the biggest football stories.

22:54Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game. Well, it surely was a good end to the day for Unai Emery and his Aston Villa side, who secured victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. That is now equaling a club record of 11 successive victories in a row and some really big wins, actually, in and amongst these. Arsenal, of course, Manchester United and tonight Chelsea too. So I'm sure there's one very happy manager. Let's hear from Unai Emery now. He's with Patrick Davidson. Unai, it's a special resilience that your team seems to have.
23:34How, again today, have you found a way to win from such a difficult situation? Good evening, yes, of course. But we know, we know it. And before the match, we were speaking about how we could keep our mentality and our consistency. The Chelsea was defending when they needed to dominate like usually they are doing the match and playing at home of course. Our plan was to try to dominate a bit of our momentum in the first half better than we did but they were pushing us, they were pressing very good and they were as well dominating with the ball more than us. But we were resilient, we were defending, we were feeling comfortable defending and And this is one thing, even struggling, we must feel it.
Read the full transcript
24:21And we did it. And of course, we were a little bit upset with the result, with how we were performing the first half. But it's something normal playing against Chelsea here at home. And we can analyse the matches they play here as well and the quality they have. But 90 minutes is 90 minutes and our momentum as well. All the matches we are getting our momentum and through it we are as well showing our capacity to play well. In the second half, Progues were getting better and of course we came back to the result because the players showed their capacity and their resilience and their mentality to keep the mentality in the game plan to follow it strongly.
25:03Oli Watkins has just been in for an interview and he said it was tactical genius that turned the game round. So firstly, can you tell us what problems you felt Chelsea were giving you and then how you solved those problems in particular with the triple substitution on 59 minutes? We need players and we need to try to add players and of course the players played in the Stati 11 as well, they deserve to be there and we are playing out of matches and we need as well to refresh something, fresh legs and as well try to do some rotation for different matches and this is the reason I decided for it. Of course, we are performing very well with one starting eleven in the last matches.
25:45But today as well, we needed to add players like Emiliano scoring goals, like Malin scoring goals, and try to get the best performance of them. And then the players, when they are shoot, like they were the last matches, getting good impact and trying to help with the mentality we have as a team. But of course, they are protagonists. And today, Oli Watkins, after he was in the bench, his mentality was amazing. his commitment amazing and he showed it as well sometimes playing 35 minutes can get some numbers like he needed when you put a player to the bench or rest the player or drop a player whatever the right word is is that the sort of response you love to see yes yes of course of course we are getting mature individually and we are being responsible this is the message every every match we are trying to set in the dressing room and the players must be mature to follow the decision I am taking and of course every work we are doing.
26:52And being responsible and being as well in combination and trying to get our stuture strong tactically overall and as well individually each one, we can show this performance and we can show this resilience. We had the first half and of course through it be as well positive the second half to come back to the side like we did. Just going back to something Oli said in his interview did they give you problems by going man to man? Did that surprise you? Was that kind of what you had to figure out and then you go 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 and that gives you that dominance in the last half an hour? Is that kind of accurate?
27:35Not surprised because we analysed them and they are playing sometimes man-to-man clearly, sometimes one player covered in the middle like today with Caicedo, but they are strong players as well and getting man-to-man. Of course, getting these duels is our challenge and we got better in the second half but we had as well in the first half we had some action getting their box. In case we were being a little bit better, Morgan and Malen, we could get something more. but to play 90 minutes it means sometimes you must be resilient, not performing and whiten your momentum to get better performance like we did in the second half with the same players or different players.
28:16I don't know if you heard the Aston Villa fans towards the end singing we're going to win the league. Now I know you're not thinking like that but does it mean a lot to give them that joy? They love seeing their team play at the moment. You've won 11 in a row. No Aston Villa team has ever won more in a row. On the day 34 we will speak about it. Now we are on the day 18. The next match is 19. We are going to play against Arsenal. We are going to finish the first half of the season against Nottingham Forest the next week. Of course, if the league was finishing the next match against Arsenal, we were in the race for the title.
28:53But in the 38 matches, there are teams like Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, they are contented more than us and still being contented more than us. Of course, we are competing very well, we are progressing getting better. Two months ago, we were speaking about different moments and of course we were worried. Now we are happy but as well now, we learned a lot with the process we had two months or three months ago. We learned a lot and now we are humble and we know and we are realistic how we can do each match, each competition, how we can compete, how the difficulties we are facing, we were facing, and how we can beat some teams like Chelsea today away, playing, competing, being resilient, and as well, getting our mentality strong, strong collectively and individually.
29:39Thanks Unai. See you at the Emirates. Thank you. Thank you. Unai Emery is certainly happy with the resilience of his team's performance today. And that goes to show as well, they've won the most points from losing positions, Aston Villa. 18 points. I'm not sure they want to be in a losing position, really, Aston Villa. But in terms of what Unai Emery was talking about, the resilience to get back into the game and to go on and win it is really impressive. Yeah, absolutely, Pane. I think you're spot on. I think in terms of just having that energy and confidence, knowing that when subs are going to come on, they're going to make a difference.
30:13It's a lovely place to be. I think in the last seven times they've conceded the first goal, they've won six of them. I mean, that's a manager's dream, knowing you're never out of the game, knowing you've always got people that are going to come on and make a difference. And obviously, he's a very good tactician. He knows how to win matches. But when you think as well, the start they had, the first five games, they had three points and one goal they'd scored. If you'd have said that they'd be in this position right now, you'd never have believed it. But it just shows you it's a great team effort.
30:39Let's have a look at the table then, because you're right, Jamie, the start that they'd made was not a good start. And then there was questions about how they're going to get their form back, which they absolutely have done. I mean, look at that. Third in the table now, just three points away from Arsenal, one point away from Manchester City as well. Of course, they face Arsenal in their next game, which is going to be a really exciting one, isn't it? They're well and truly in the mix and they deserve to be there. And just one of the reasons for that and just seeing that interview there, I get sort of reminiscence of Jose Mourinho where he just gives you that belief.
31:10And if you're in that dressing room, when he goes into half-time, he's sort of giving you your tactics and saying that we've done wrong in the first half and giving you the belief to go out in the second half and do this game in, game out, the demands day in, day out of the training ground. This is why they're there. This is why they're there. And this is why the players are playing. This is why the players that are coming on like Oli Watkins today make an impact in 35 minutes. Others that have done it throughout the season. But the next few games, this could well and truly propel them. And listen, they have blown teams away in certain games of season.
31:41But like what, again, Oli said there, they sit back, they restrict teams. they play a little bit sort of boring at times in terms of what fans would want to see compared to a Man City and an Arsenal but it wins and it gets you over the line and it gets points on the board A couple of small negatives though for Aston Villa when they face Arsenal is they are going to be without Mati Cash and Mubakar Kamara as well who will be suspended for the game after getting their yellow card so how much of an impact could that be? It's going to be interesting to see what he does because there's obviously no Mings no Pau Torres I don't believe for the near future anyway.
32:18So Kamara is probably an easier one to deal with. But in other games, Lindelof's gone to play right back. If you had a Pal Torres, that might be fine. But otherwise, the right back situation is going to be a really difficult one. And obviously Arsenal, they're fantastic in those wide areas. So whoever decides to play there, he always gets every decision right. So he'll find a way. Whoever has to play right back will have to come in and do a great job. but Matty Cash has been in such good form of late, so they really miss him. Kamara in midfield does a great job, but he might end up finishing with how he finished today.
32:52Sorry, he can't finish with Kamara, but Anana and one other, maybe John McGinn comes in alongside him. So I don't see that as a major problem, but right back certainly will be one that he'll have his thinking cap on with his team, looking at what way we can make sure whoever the left winger is of Arsenal, how we can nullify them and stop them causing any problems. Obviously on a really good run at the moment, 11 wins in a row in all competitions, but the January transfer window is coming up. How important could this window be for them to really maintain this level now? It's always a tricky one, isn't it?
33:21The January window, especially when a team are really in the ascendancy because you want to bring quality in to add to that, but then you don't want to interrupt and disrupt what you've already got in that dressing room. In terms of, like I said, the culture, the environment, all the players there, they want to play, they want to be in the starting 11, the ones that are on the bench, they can't wait to come on, make an impact, try and start the next game. It's a real juggling act. And like what Jamie said there, he normally gets it spot on. They do need additions to bolster and get a little bit of impetus again for that second half of the season, but they've got to do it wisely.
33:56What do you reckon, Jamie? I can't have any subs. There's no more loans, I don't believe. I think they've used all their loans. Obviously, Elliot hasn't quite worked out as a loan. So I'm going to find out on that. Someone's in my ear going to tell me a second. but no I think in terms of bringing in players this it feels like for Aston Villa fans right now and everybody concerned with a chance of a lifetime and you'll be kicking yourself if there is an opportunity I mean last year they utilised it brilliantly didn't they they brought in Marcus Rashford and from Spain Asensio was a great signing so that was really good so if there are options to bring in players be it by having to spend money and you feel this might get us across the line and win a title with Aston Villa, he'd think he'd have to go for it.
34:39He'd have to gamble. But right now, whatever that manager wants, whatever Unai Emery demands, you've got to give it to him because he's a genius, the guy. And I think you've given a chance of a lifetime. So just let him have whatever he needs. Hi there. Sumi Golan here, the host of the Essential EFL podcast from Sky Sports. 35:58Well, it was all going so well for Chelsea, but a much improved second half performance from Aston Villa meant they went away from Stamford Bridge with all three points. Let's hear now from the Chelsea captain Rhys James. He's with Patrick Davidson. Rhys, all defeats hurt. This one especially so, having dominated two-thirds of it. Yeah, I think it's always disappointing to lose at home. You know, we dominated 60, 65 minutes of the game and in the first 60 minutes they didn't create any chances and then yeah they get one and you know the dynamic of the game changes. So firstly what gave you control of the match did you think?
36:43I think we came out sharp the way we set up, the way we wanted to play, we got off on the front foot and in the right way and yeah second half you know one or two moments, you know changed the game they picked up momentum and you know it was more difficult. Did you feel like it was down to a personnel shift on their part? Did you notice them change shape within as a player? Do you notice that within a game and then how does that play into that dynamic you talk about? Yeah of course you know they made substitutions you know shape maybe changed slightly but nothing we shouldn't have been able to deal with you know we've seen you know them play numerous times this season and you know we understand the style and the type that the way they want to play um but no i think you know we need to um you know look at ourselves from you know this we wanted to win and you know we didn't today and you know we're super disappointed can you pinpoint what more you could have done in that last half an hour you said like there's nothing you shouldn't have been able to cope with i mean keep the ball out the net as simple as that you know we make one or two errors.
37:54One error leads to the corner and the other error leads to Oli's first goal. I think we have ourselves to blame. It's two slight errors from us and we got punished. This is the toughest league in the world. Are these important moments, Rhys, for sticking together? Although there's been a lot of decent performances in there, one win in six in the Premier League, and suddenly that gap, I think to Arsenal it's 13 points, Villa it's 10, suddenly those gaps look quite big. So staying tight is really important in these moments, I guess? No, I mean, the table now means nothing. You know, come 38 games, that's when the table means something.
38:38We have to put this game behind us and look forward. We have another game in a few days, which will be another super tough game, which we need to prepare right for. Thank you. Thanks. You're the best, mate. So Chelsea have dropped the most points at home from winning positions. That's now 11 after the defeat today. Do you think, Steve, that is a lack of experience in the squad or what do you put that down to? Well, I think that is always the excuse with Chelsea, the lack of experience. And that is just down to the model and the process and the programme that they do. I think I said it before, I think it's been 90 games in total since the last time that they played or started someone at the age over 30.
39:19and you need that on the pitch you know these lads are learning on their feet and you've got the players like Tosin and Rhys James that are sort of late 20s but you need someone especially in games where scenarios like the corner that might be where you just need we've had it we've had a player where they just grab you like the captain might just go John Terry for me or just go on come here do that stand there do this you're pushing each other you're barking orders whether it's just seeing games out whether you whether you can sniff that you're back in the game you need to do more like Chelsea today to kill the game off.
39:50You need that voice. You need that sort of drive in that team. And I just don't see it at the minute from individuals in that dressing room. They do. Sorry, Pim. I was going to say, they do have the youngest average age in the starting positions here. You can have a look there in the last couple of games as well in the whole of the league. So what do you think is difficult about that in the sense that, you know, you just mentioned that you could have that experienced person in the team that kind of just helps you through those difficult moments. Do you think that's what the main point is? Yeah, I think so.
40:21And this is probably what I expected with Chelsea this year. I looked at the fixtures and the games that they had, going to the Club World Cup. It was a great achievement winning that, but it was always going to have a consequence on injuries and keeping everybody fit. In that period, Cole Palmer's been in and out of the team because of his injuries. He's your star, man. That's been difficult. Excuse me. Levi Colwell, before balls even been kicked, does his crucial ligament. Makes it very difficult. So you're always trying to find out what is your best defensive partnership. And this year, that's been a bit of a struggle They've never really had that dominant figure in there.
40:50And I think that's what Levi obviously brings to the team. In terms of Liam DeLapp. Rory, I play with his dad. Liam DeLapp. Liam is not quite hit the ground running there. He's had injuries. He's been sent off. It's been really stop-start for him. Gerald Pedro, I thought, would have done a lot better than what he has. I'm a big fan. I still think he will come to that point where he does great. But he's found it difficult to adjust so far. So lots of different factors. You know, yeah, you can look at the experience. But I think Steve makes a great point. That goal is a great example of a leader, someone that's just going to, like John Terry's and people that aren't really in this football world anymore, you know, but someone that's actually going to think, right, you've got your three big ones there.
41:26Did anybody actually go and take responsibility and go and head that ball and put Marlon Gusto, I picked him out. It wasn't great from him, but someone else actually could have took initiative there, come and win that ball. All of a sudden, everything changes. But when they are struggling, what I've noticed is, what is Chelsea side? And I don't know, it comes from obviously a number of different facts. The manager as well has to take a little bit of responsibility to players. Somebody has to take the game by the scruff of the neck and start to lead. When you're winning 1-0 in a game, 2-0, 3-0, everybody looks like a good player.
41:54Football's easy. It's lovely. I'll pass to you. You can have it. Yeah, I'll receive it on the half turn. But when you're not, that's when you need your real characters to step in. Like Kai Sado's an ultimate leader in that team, but he needs a bit of help in there. I need to see a bit more from Fernandes at times. Yeah, he's great and he's trying to get into the box and score goals. but I feel that that inexperience probably does play a little bit of a part but there's a number of different factors as well that have to come into it and they just have to make sure they can see out games because you can turn it and flip it and say well look what about Chelsea to Newcastle last week when they're two down come back to 2-2 that was character so it just needs a little bit more consistency is what I would say yeah I wonder what the manager Enzo Marescu would be thinking of that as well of course he was suspended today couldn't be on the touchline he was watching from the stands let's hear from him now after that post after that match tonight life.
42:41Enzo, for an hour, absolute control, complete dominance. Does it hurt to lose a game like that even more because of that control, because of that dominance you had? Absolutely, yes. I think by the time they scored the first goal, we should have scored already two or three goals. And then after the goal we conceded, the dynamic of the game changing a little bit.
43:11It's frustrating as you said, also because I don't think the game shows 10 points difference between us and them, so it's even worse. OK, so that first hour, what gave you that control? We've had some players and managers from Aston Villa talking about you going man for man and just not allowing them out. Yeah, I think off the ball we were very good. On the ball also we were very good, creating chances. We started in the same way second half, but again, I think the goal we conceded changed a little bit the dynamic of the game. Even before that though, did the treble change that Unai Emery made?
43:51Did that begin to change the match? They obviously changed personnel and shape a little bit at that point, and from there on in they seemed to find it a lot easier to create. I think it's more the goal we concede, that the change will be the dynamic, then the three changes they have done. But again, we need to take the good part, that is the way we have played for one hour and we need to understand how we can improve the last half an hour. Can you answer that for us? How could you have managed that last half an hour better once they got back into it? I think it's also the game management, After we conceded the goal, I think we lost a little bit of balance, we need a little bit more control over the game and then probably this goes a little bit with the game after game experience and you need that.
44:40You're quite a young inexperienced side, certainly compared to them. Does that play into it, do you think, in those moments, sometimes those little inconsistencies we see from your team in runs of games? Can youth be part of the explanation there? Could be, we don't know, could be for sure. Otherwise it's difficult to explain how you can play so good for one hour and then change a little bit the last half an hour. It's something that we need to analyse and understand. Can you talk to us about the substitution of Cole Palmer? I presume it's down to managing his minutes but obviously the game's in the balance there and just watching him come off he didn't look overly happy about it.
45:20But anyway, he was doing well. I think off the ball he worked very hard, you know, pressing. Also he was a little bit tired. We have another game in 48 hours, 72 hours. So he just tried to keep them all over them fit. How big a setback is this Enzo? You said in your first answer it's now 10 points to them, 13 to Arsenal. You've got a lot of catching up to do. So yeah, how big a setback is it? Not just this game, but I think it's one win in six now, Premier League. Yeah, for sure now it's, as you said, the difference between us now, for instance, Aston Villa is 10 points. I think in this moment we don't need to pay attention to the table, in terms of we need to pay attention to our performance, try to win games, and then I think slowly, slowly we can be close again.
46:09Are you surprised though by how difficult the last month has been? I mean, there's been some good performances in there, but that week of the Barcelona game, the Arsenal game, it looked like something was brewing and then suddenly actually on and off the pitch, it seems like it's been a difficult time for you. No, no, no, I said if you remember anyway, but I said immediately after the Arsenal game that Leeds away, Bournemouth away, Atalanta away, they are a complicated game. So I'm not surprised about that because I know how difficult and how tough is the Premier League. Thank you, Enzo. Thank you.
46:42Thank you. Thank you. Well, it was a really good start to November, as you can see, for Chelsea. Three wins in a row. But since then, just the one win in the last six, as Patrick mentioned, there were some really good performances within those games. But of course, it's the results that matter. And that will be the thing that's frustrating them the most. Well, just there, what frustrates me is that he's come out and said, certainly about the Leeds and Bournemouth games, that he knows that they're going to be a tough game. But all of a sudden, that responsibility then has to lie on the players.
47:11you know, then players need to know that away at Leeds, at a midweek fixture, away at Ellen Road, you need to approach that differently to Arsenal at home or Spurs away. They're totally different, you know, and that's the sort of mixed signals that just throw me off. I mean, like I said before, for Chelsea not to have two consecutive home wins back-to-back, you know, for a team that's really striving to sort of be at the top of the tables, is really poor from them. When you were at Chelsea, obviously they had such a great home record, didn't they, for many, many years? And that's the problem. If you take those games in isolation, that Tottenham, obviously Wolves, Burnley, that was a fantastic performance.
47:50Because I think they lost, the man got sent off, didn't they? They did so well in that. Kaysano got sent off. They showed great character in that game. But then you go to Leeds and Steve's right. And he said, it's a complicated game. So don't overcomplicate it then by playing out from the back and asking questions of your two centre-backs that aren't really comfortable on the ball. like Tosin plays it back to the keeper. They lose the ball. All of a sudden, the ball ends up in the back of your neck. You don't deal with set pieces well enough. That becomes a difficult game, so don't complicate it.
48:16Then they got Bournemouth. That looked, at the time, I watched the game. It was a really poor one and that doesn't look like such a good point at the moment with obviously everyone beating Bournemouth at the minute. Yeah, good result against Everton. First half against Newcastle, really poor. Second half, excellent. And then today, for an hour, fabulous. Absolutely brilliant on the front foot. We were both at Waxley Lyrical about it. I think this game could end up 2-3-0 and now Chelsea have got a resurgence. But now he's doing exactly what he looks like there and he's probably scratching his head, thinking with his staff, how do I get this again?
48:44How do I get the consistency out of these players? Look, I think getting Cole Palmer 60 minutes, what did he get? 65, 70 minutes into his legs is important. I wouldn't make that a story. That was always going to be the case. You've got to manage him very carefully. He's had a few, I think, groin issues. You have to make sure you get him back into his rhythm of his game very carefully. The last thing you want to do is pick up a secondary injury to get 70 minutes they should be really pleased with but there are still a lot of positives when I see this Chelsea side but the frustration will be the consistency and you can see what that manager is alluding to
