Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Hi, and welcome to Snacks, the podcast where we dive into the crazy food habits of your favorite celebrities. I'm your host, Jo Salt, editorial director of Delish. Today, we have a real icon in the house. Someone who is known for her incredible interview style, known for her early, early mornings, and has also been to space. But she's also known for a very famous best friend, and apparently they have some food exploits that we're going to dive into. Please welcome Gail King.
36We'll be right back. Now, at McDonald's, wake up to a$4 breakfast meal deal. Wake up to a sausage McMuffin or a sausage biscuit. To hash browns and wake up to a hot coffee. Get your$4 breakfast meal deal. Limited time only. Prices and participation may vary. Prices may be higher for delivery. I'm so excited you're here. Nice to meet you. It's so nice to meet you. And I've been a far, from afar, a big fan. So I'm thrilled. But I also, the thing that you are that I am not is you're such a morning person. And so I need us to start this interview with what is the day in the life of Gail? Oh, my God.
13Eating. Like, what powers? Oh, eating, eating. Well, eating. But also, like, you don't drink coffee very famously. I don't drink coffee. I don't drink alcohol. I don't. i'm a big square i'm a big square and my hours are really just dreadful i don't care what anybody says you never get used to these morning hours what is your schedule my alarm goes off at 324 and i need three snoozes you know the snoozes are like seven nine minutes three so i admire people joe that can just alarm goes off and they just jump out of bed or the people that don't even have an alarm they just get up naturally i'm not that guy three snoozes second snooze i go and start running the bath water jump back in bed wait for the third one and then by the time the bath is full i like a bath every day you know some people like to take a bath or shower at night who are those people crazy people no a lot of people a lot of people take their baths i have to do it first thing in the morning that gets me going i like it hot hot hot hot i like bubbles and then it's off to the races so do you eat before you leave the house definitely not no I'm not hungry who's hungry at 324 in the middle in the morning so what's the first thing you eat um by the time I get to work um a little after five you know there's fruit sitting there so I have some fruit like this morning I had orange slices okay everyone knows it's better to have orange slices than orange juice agree because the the orange juice is just a sugar going right to bloodstream as opposed to natural little orange slices yep fiber fiber that's all have that or some blackberries but it's normally fruit and uh i like the um the vitacoco pineapple water yep i enjoy that so you get on the air in the morning with just a little bit of fruit oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah i'm like flabbergasted by this why are you flabbergasted who is eating that early in the morning i get the timing but you have like i think of you as infectious energy you are focused it's liquid cocaine you should try it it's fabulous i'm like get me what you're having literally because it's like you you just have such a clarity about you that i would have thought that you were someone who was like up making egg white omelets or something at like two okay that's one thing about me that i wish if i could change about myself I really do wish I could cook.
38Do you cook? I do cook. I run Delish, so I have to cook. Of course, of course. But you don't cook. I do not. Interesting. I feel badly for my children who will have no favorite memories. Remember Mom used to make because they were raised on SpaghettiOs, Tater Tots, you know, the stuff. It's really bad. But those are the children of Delish. Do you understand? Those are, like, these are our people. The SpaghettiO people are the Delish people. That's just not how children should be raised. I know. I'm sorry. I know. With fish sticks and chicken fingers and chicken nuggets, that's just not good. So what do you order in?
12What's your dinner of choice? Well, I've discovered this service. It's called Yura, why you are a catering. Okay. And so every day I get a menu. Like this morning I ordered, I'm having the sea bass this evening. So nice. Yep. And so it's basically just like delivered to your door. So they deliver to my house. They deliver to my house. wow so you get the menus for a week so i'll do that or i used to have this oven where you could order things and you stick it in the oven i forgot the name of it it's yeah i already know what you're talking about where it came with the did it come with the special oven or is that that one yes it comes with a special yeah yeah i don't remember the name of it i know i don't remember sorry whatever your company is nobody it's good i feel badly that i don't remember it because i know i it but then i got a little bored with that yeah yeah um because after a while even though the food was good it appeared to be repetitive even though it was good even though it was good interesting so i'm always trying different things do you have a guilty pleasure takeout um i don't feel guilty about ordering stuff i don't so i don't have a guilty pleasure takeout i really don't what's i sort of order what i want i actually i order what i want that mantra i think it's really the other day I had Shake Shack what's your order of Shake Shack cheeseburger I love a good cheeseburger and you know they have crinkle cut fries I like that the best and then when I'm really really feisty I'll have a milkshake what's your what's your milkshake well lately they've had some caramel ones which are really nice caramel I had Chinese the other day but you know I really do need my eating is okay I know I'm giving you all the bad stuff but But I really do try to eat a balanced, healthy meal.
56I do try to do that. I'm not always successful, but I do try. I do imagine that with your schedule being what it is and with you doing all the things you do. And it's funny because I've actually brought this up before. We've had a few stand-up comedians on this show. And I always think of them as debaucherous eaters, right? That they're eating late night. But a lot of them do say that it's a stamina thing. Like they have to eat well and they have to like get good sleep in order to do what they do. And so I imagine it's the same thing with you that like, you know, for the most part, you need to be good.
28This is the thing, Joe, except when it comes to sleep, I really am dead man walking. Every day we hear stories on the news about you got to get seven hours. You got to get eight hours. You got to get blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I never get any of that. I wear this watch so I can see how much sleep I didn't get. Yes. I mean, I never I haven't had a good night's sleep in old 20 years. I mean, I just feel like that's all of us now I'm just for grins, just curious How much sleep did you get last night? But please continue, I'm listening to you No, I want to know how much sleep you got last night Because I really feel like you're the Energizer Bunny Is how I would have thought of you As someone who just doesn't need a lot But is powering through the day I got three hours and fifteen minutes Stop Then I got Let's see I know it's bad, it's bad, it's bad, it's bad That was Super Bowl night So three hours of sleep Then I got five hours and five minutes That's good for me Five hours and five minutes is very good.
19Five hours of sleep and some orange slices. So when we see you in the morning. I'm doing the hula if I get five hours. That never happens. Okay, so you're a Shake Shack person. So you mentioned cheeseburgers. I also hear you're a cheeseburger aficionado. I don't know about aficionado, but I love cheeseburgers. They just asked me to be a judge at Burger Bash. Are you familiar with Burger Bash? Yes, New York Food and Wine Festival. Yes, but this time they've asked me to go to Florida. So I'm going to Florida. South Beach. Yes. Another great one. My first time. So good. I cannot wait. So fun. I cannot wait.
50Oh, my gosh. I need to come and watch you do that. Five best cheeseburgers in your life. Can you name them? Well, this is the thing. Years ago, GQ, this tells you the power of a cover line. GQ had a cover that said the best burgers you have to have before you die. Right, of course. Right? That's a digital lock cover line. And I looked at that friggin' list, and I said, I must go. I must. There was one in Florida called La Tub. Okay. which is very good you know just a regular kind of place um i went to a place in philadelphia i went to a place in california but in town i like jean george at abc kitchen so good are you familiar with this burger it's very very good the jane hotel also has a really good it has a really good burger yep um burger joint is good burger joint another great one um the one that uh the tap that has the big milkshakes oh black black tap they have a great burger i told you they do actually and they're known for that it was crazy shakes but their burgers are actually really good very tasty what about corner bistro can i get you on a corner bistro i've been there and i think they're great i think they're fine i think they're fine i think they're fine i just i where did the love for burgers the cheeseburgers come from not know i do not know but there's something about you know they always say if you had your last meal what it would be it would be a cheeseburger and something else i don't just like a burger i like a cheese right what's your cheese bun i know just you asking that question just makes me smile i just am so glad that you're here do a cheddar cheese and pepper jack together think about that for a second it's so good it's melting over the meat oh god oh my god can we just get a burger in here i don't like swiss i don't want i don't i'm not a big swiss girl but i love pepper jack swiss is what i order when i'm trying to be healthy yeah Well, there you go.
38You know what I mean? Fantina's also very tasty. Yes. Also, Munster. I like anything. I like Munster, too. I like anything cheese. So I want to rewind back. Provolone. Provolone. All of these things. Mozzarella. Well, when you host Burger Bash, you're going to get to taste all of them. I know. Because I've been there, and it's great. It's great. I've never been, so I'm really psyched about that. I'm super excited for you. I was glad they asked me. It's such a great ask. Let's go back to your childhood. Yeah. Childhood and food. What were your food memories when you were a kid? Well, you know, my mom cooked, but I didn't walk around thinking it's so great.
14It's just that I was raised in a house where you eat what is served. Right. Where did you grow up? I lived in Ankara, Turkey from first grade to sixth grade. Wow. So my mom was at home. So every night we had dinner together as a family. She cooked every night. And, you know, I didn't really think about food. You know, it's just you have to have food because you have to survive. But I wasn't really thinking, oh, my God, you know, this is wonderful. This is wonderful. It's just it was pretty basic. So I'm still a meat and potatoes girl, still very much so. And do you feel like you like food, your love for food?
48Because I do actually, you don't cook, but you really do have a passion. I really do. Where did that come from? I mean, I can people that know me well will say I will get stuck on something once. This is funny. I was visiting open Telluride Colorado okay the electricity went out in the whole town now we had been on a diet and I've been thinking all day about the burger I was gonna have at the end of the day all day I was gonna go to Fudd Rucker's which is very good in Telluride really good yep Fudd Rucker's and I said well they have a generator so let's go so we go the generator wasn't working it was only coal sandwiches only and I said well we because literally I'd been thinking about this friggin burger all day they also have bottomless fries too to note yeah also very good not to sell very good yes we went to three different places everything was closed i said well let's go to the grocery store we went to the grocery store because she has a chef and the chef said well i'll make you one so we ended up having it but but we went to four or five different places and she said you know gail this is not normal you realize that don't you i go why is it not normal i've been thinking about it all day i i didn't you know what joe i didn't even think that was weird when we went to the fourth place and i said well can you call art and see if he would make us something and she said you realize this is not normal can you call art and get the fudruckers running please we need to get the chef art oh my god yeah can you can you call art he was at home because you guys have a char-willed grill yeah and she goes you realize this is not normal and honestly i didn't even think it was abnormal i just thought i'd been thinking about it all day and i just we just can't have it she said but gail there's no electricity everything is closed so where does this come from where i don't know is it joy is it like because i do find that because food does give me a lot of joy you know this is a thing we live in such a fractured world, but even before this, things that really unite people, sports, music, and food, we can all come together around those things.
55If you hear a good song, even if you don't know the language, the first time I heard Andrea Bucelli, the hair stood up on the back of my neck. I didn't know a word that he was saying, but it was so beautiful. So I think you can be really united by those things. And I can't think of anything that's more loving than to be able to prepare a meal yeah i wish i could do that prepare a meal for someone i really care about and serve it to them i think or better yet somebody do that for me well here's what i'll say to that because we always say at delish you don't have to know how to cook you just have to love to eat and i do think coming hello my name is gail yes yes but also this is also why the super bowl for delish is like our official food holiday right because it's very much about all three of those things things right coming together and I think you've hit the nail on the head there all right so I want to you talked about Oprah and I need to know what are you what is Gail and Oprah eating on a girls night in what's your um well they do a very lovely lemon pasta over there at her place it's like something that I I'd never tasted it before she'll call me and say they just made blah blah blah blah blah and she'll show me the picture of it oh my god please make that next time i'm there and i tasted that lemon pasta that that's our go-to lately i need this lemon i need a friend like oprah i need a friend sending me those pictures okay i say when i die i want to come back as one of oprah's dogs they live very well that's what you want joe are they eating the lemon pasta too because no they're not i mean they have other things they've got better stuff yeah they have other things oh god bless oh how do you eat french fries i hear that you eat french fries in a really fun i don't think this is weird now let me just say this about french fries i love a good crinkle cut french fries nathan's has them shake shack has them wait shake shack or nathan's which wins i like both of those i like a crinkle i do i like a crinkle okay mcdonald's fries are the first fries that i found you could eat without ketchup agree i actually really like mcdonald's fries yes I don't like them.
01They're the only skinny fries that I like. I don't like the medium ones. So I like crinkle cut or I like a good steak fry. Like a thick. You know, that's flat. That's flat and large. Those are my favorites. Steak cut is Fuddruckers, if I'm not wrong. You are correct. That's a good one. So I like that. But you don't want them too puffy, so it's like a mini baked potato. I don't like those. No, no. I like a flat one that's sort of big or crinkle cut. But the best way to eat them, dip them in a little ketchup and then a little mayonnaise on top. Oh, okay. You're welcome. I love it. And people said, you put mayonnaise on your French fries?
40Have you ever tried that? I have not tried that. But doesn't that sound good? Just take it in for a second. Take it in. A little mayonnaise, a little ketchup, then a little mayonnaise together. And this is the other thing. Don't mix it ahead of time. I was going to say not Russian dressing. No, no, no, no, no. Okay, no. no no it's not russian dressing no it's not do not do not mix them ahead of time it's a little dip and a little dip and then in your mouth i mean it's a party in there it's a crinkle cut with that yes oh my god yes i actually am gonna have to try that we're gonna have to do a whole video about that would you like a movie snack recommendation i would love to know what you're eating at the movies i could have just had a full meal but you go to the movies and i just think it's it's it's criminal to watch a movie without popcorn no of course so i prefer buttered popcorn of course with some raisinettes so you take a little bit of butter popcorn a little bit of raisinets and put that's another party in your mouth you're welcome so when it's warm the chocolate melts in there a little it doesn't really melt because you know butter popcorn at the movie only gets so only gets a little but it's it's like the butter and there's a salt and the chocolate it's very delicious raisinets have not made their way with the young with the young generation has it i just feel like people need to love it most popular i'm not going to say that no but i forgive them i just love a raisinette though i do too i also love a milk dud i feel like a classic movie that is too uh chewy it gets a little it gets stuck on your teeth but i do as opposed to a raisinette yeah i guess you're right i do feel like a raisinette is kind of like i could see my son being like annoyed that he got a chocolate covered raisin though i'm like i just feel like a young person doesn't appreciate how old is he he's 19.
24he's 19. so i could see him being like raisins i guess this is healthy i was thinking he was a little boy no no no he's potty trained and everything oh yeah yeah yeah he's old he's an old man he's gonna be mad at me for saying that um okay then what's your you look great to have a 19 year old oh you're very sweet i thought you had little little guys thank you make sure we get that turned up yeah you have a little guy I thought you had little guys. Damien, make sure that's... No, my youngest is actually... Make sure, Damien, you leave that part in. Leave that in. My youngest is 12. And my middle son is...
53I have to mention all three. 12, 16, and 19. So you have three boys. I have two boys and a daughter. Oh, good. Okay. And they give me a run for my money with food and snacks. Let me just say that. I want to know... Okay, so you don't cook, but you must have the opportunity to eat really well. You travel the world. You've been to space. Yeah. What did you eat? We didn't have any food in space. No? No, it was only 11 minutes. Not even like astronaut ice cream? No. That's a bummer. There was food when we returned. Right, what they gave. And you could have food before you left, but I wanted to make sure that my bladder was clear.
27Oh. I didn't want any problems. So I didn't eat anything. I didn't eat anything that morning. I was actually too nervous to eat. But when you came back, they had like a full spread for you. It was very nice. That's nice. I imagine eating before you go up into space must be hard, too. Well, some people had a little light breakfast. I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it. That's interesting. I want to know, though, what's your dream breakfast? Like, what's your... Oh, okay, you'll like this. I will. One thing I really enjoy, I love going to a great hotel and ordering room service. Best. I just think I love laying in bed, watching something good on television, and just really soaking it up.
08That's one of my favorite things to do. So, and breakfast, believe it or not, is my favorite meal because I don't get to eat it often. So I normally, if I have it, it's on weekends or when I'm on the road, but I normally don't really just get to have breakfast on a regular basis because my hours are so screwy. Favorite thing, you're in a hotel, I call room service, this is my order. Scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, bacon extra crispy, hash brown potatoes, pancakes, light and fluffy, please. and just for grins, English muffin and hot chocolate. So I'm giving the order, and the lady goes, for how many?
48And that threw me. And so I went, two. When she said, for how many? I'm thinking, oh, because I asked for orange juice, too, fresh squeezed orange juice. And when she said, for how many? I went, oh, she thinks that this is a lot of food. So I said, for two. And she said, okay, two. So they bring the order up, Joe. And when it comes, I go, honey, the food is here. Well, then I ran and turned on the shower, turned on the water. And I said, honey, the food is here. And I go, you can just set it up right there. That's good. Because I'm thinking, I don't want them to think I'm piggly wiggly. I said, honey, the food is here.
27I went, thank you so much. But I was thrown by it for how many? I have to tell you something that I literally never told anybody else. You did that too? I have done the same thing before. There you go. I really appreciate it because I travel a lot alone. Look at you looking all sane and everything. No, I travel a lot alone for work. And you're a crazy lady. But I also, like anyone who knows me knows, I like to sample a lot of things. Me too. That's the thing. You don't have to eat at all. No, exactly. I eat quite a bit. I also love an appetizer. I'll order a bunch of them. But I like to try different things.
00Yes. So have they ever asked you for how many? Yes. On my last trip, they were like, how many? And what did you say? Three. you said three yes because i was like but i didn't do i couldn't i couldn't hide three people so i was like oh they'll be right back you didn't say honey the food is here there's two people in the bathroom my imaginary boyfriend yeah exactly my friends are in the bathroom come on out leon oh my god like honestly yeah we're kindred spirits i love that but also you can tell anyone you can until say joe salts is in the back room she eats a lot you can just throw me right under the bus and we'll be right back there's no one like you and there never will be from the producer bohemian rhapsody there are many legends but there is only one michael rated pg 13 in theaters april 24.
00I have absolutely loved getting to know you, but I have a couple of fast, like super fast questions. Okay. This is our lightning round. Are you ready? I'm ready. Sweet or salty? Oh, sweet. But I don't mind salt, but definitely. I have a terrible sweet tooth. Okay. Hot chocolate or milkshake? Oh, hot. Oh, wow. Sorry, three for a loop. Oh, God. That's hard. but I'll have to go with hot chocolate. Oh, interesting. I love hot chocolate. Who has the best hot chocolate? There's a good place that we just discovered called G-L-A-C-E. Glace, gloss. How do you say it, Maria Clara? Glace. Oh, is that the one with the crazy marshmallow on the top?
41They do it from scratch. It's the grandson of Zabar's. Yes. He's amazing what they do in there. He is amazing. And they have different kinds of hot chocolate. Yes. And so we got to see him when he was doing, when he was making the marshmallows and they have different flavors that come. People think it's serendipity. Yeah. But I'm telling you, Glace is amazing. Also, also note to self, Starbucks white hot chocolate with skim milk, also very good. Oh. I have that quite a bit. Okay. Is that, so I was going to ask you, like, what's your afternoon pick me up? Knowing I can go home soon. No food. No, no, no, no.
21I like anything with icing. Like I said, sweet. I will sometimes just walk around the office and go, does anybody have anything sweet? And I'm not kidding. Especially anything with icing. Do people present things to you? Because I would. You come to the Delish Kitchen anytime. Sometimes they do. But I will say, does anybody have anything sweet? Or also like a popcorn too. Seriously, we need to figure out how to get a Delish delivery to your office every afternoon because there is so much sweet stuff coming out of our kitchen. I know, but don't do it. We want it. Yeah. Okay. I don't have willpower.
57What's your chip flavor? My hips would not be happy. What's your chip flavor of choice? I like a truffle. Ooh. I like truffle. Now, that's fancy schmancy. So for regular, barbecue. Okay. Barbecue. What's your favorite fast food? I might have to go with Shake Shack. I like them. Interesting. I like them. What's your road trip snack?
22You know, when you're just stopping at the store? Yeah. Or, you know, something you need to have in the car if you're on for a long drive. Or on the plane. What do you eat on the plane? You know, lately the nuts have not been good. No. If I could just say to the airlines of the world, where's my camera? Over here. The nuts have not been good. Here, talk right to them. The nuts have not been good. Yeah. And they used to be very tasty, but now I find that they're a little dry. I'm not going to name any particular airlines, but I used to enjoy, and they used to have nuts with little balls of cheese and olives.
56Oh. They used to have that. Yes. And now the nuts have just been a little dry. Okay. But I will get the nuts. That's it. I will get the nuts. But also JetBlue has great plantain chips. I do like those. That's a good one. And they have a special drink called Zero Proof because I don't drink alcohol. But they've got a nice little welcome, they call it zero proof or something. It's got some kind of cucumber agave action. It's very tasty. And the plantain chips. I'm going to say something about what you just said, which is, because I'm not like not drinking. I just am like, I'm not sleeping well. You know, I'm at the same thing.
36So I'm just like not drinking alcohol as much as I used to. I don't judge you, Joe. No, and I'm more jumping on this to say, I actually do feel like people have gotten really creative with mocktails, and I almost find that more interesting than drinking. My go-to is Shirley Temple because you can always get those. But lately, I was someplace just the other day, and the guy concocted up something. I said, ooh, this is really good. He had some kind of ginger beer, some kind of agave, something that was very tasty. You know, my drinking stems from when I was in high school, and I had gone to the Christian Youth Leadership Conference, and I was one of the leaders, as you might imagine.
16I can imagine. I was one of the leaders, and somebody got a big keg of beer, and they brought it in. I hadn't had beer before. And I got so drunk, it made me so sick, that I thought, I never want to feel that way again. Never. I was throwing up, I had diarrhea, I had a headache. I know you want the details. I want them all. So I woke up the next day, and my head was throbbing. I said, I never want to feel that way again. And I haven't had anything since then. Wow. And Oprah always teases me. She said, you know, they have other things besides Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill because sister girl enjoys a lovely glass of wine.
49Although she doesn't really drink anymore either, but she used to enjoy a lovely glass of wine. I can't believe you just name-checked Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill. Don't you remember that? Yes. Yes. That was my college. Oh, my gosh. You're just giving me all the feels. That's what it was. That is so good. But I just, no, I'm really fine. I don't feel I miss anything. I don't. I totally agree with you. I totally agree with you. Okay, last and final question. Okay. You don't sleep, but what's your late night snack? What's your late night craving? Oh, I really try to be good about that. So nothing.
23If you could be not good. Although the other day, this just happened to me last night, I had a little chocolate craving. Okay. Because sometimes you just want a nice piece of chocolate. There's this icing called Betty Crocker. I know her. And you can just eat that baby right out the can. yes you can i went and got a spoon and you know i go like this i dipped in a little peanut butter and i just i passed by the mirror and i said you should be ashamed of yourself and then i went back and got one more scoop you should still be ashamed of yourself but it was so good so good i do not recommend that chocolate what's the frosting flavor it's chocolate chocolate it's chocolate it's betty crocker's milk chocolate i don't like dark chocolate milk chocolate and i I like, you know, Skippy's or Jif peanut butter because choosy moms choose Jif.
13Obviously. But I also like Skippy, too. And you do a little bit of that and a little bit of that, and God, it was good. I mean, I could still, you know, where you can see that your teeth marks on the spoon. I just did that last night. That's so good. You would think I'd be embarrassed, but I'm not. No. So it just means you just work out a little harder. You just work out a little harder. Yes. That's all. You just do a couple sit-ups. Fine. No big deal. You've been a joy. Thank you so much. i hope this was at least one of the most fun interviews you've done in a long time because i do feel like this is just i mean we're just having such a nice team sarita's here dating's here the best everybody knows you're going to leave in all the things she said what's your name sir christian christian is christian you went for best hair but also delish what's your name hi cindy hello cindy also back in the test kitchen we got a great team i know i know you anytime you this is fun over here come over when maria clara my assistant who's here she says it's in the shuffle i go god we gotta walk over there i know it's annoying it's annoying i mean i think i had to walk 50 steps listen they keep promising up i'm gonna make jordan um wortley listen to this because they keep promising us a bridge between the buildings that's what we need when we came and the guy sent us he said you're in the wrong entrance you have to go the freight elevator i go okay freight elevator the guy said does anybody ever tell you look like gail king i go yeah all the time he goes oh wow there's something i go i am gail king he goes you're okay okay oh well then gail let me walk as he's saying you got to go to the freight elevator well let me walk you back there to the freight elevator i went okay you're like so then then we get on the freight elevator we come up here of course it's locked so we're going boom boom boom boom i can't i'm thinking gosh i thought they wanted me to come i can't believe i thought you wanted me to come this whole time and she had the boone's hill and she had the boone's farm i can't even say she's got the other when you get off the freight elevator and you open the door it's darkness no so i'm thinking is this right we open the door you have to step into the darkness and then the light pops on i said i said to i said to shelby we could be murdered right here nobody's out here that might make news but see the king and shelby murdered at sheffield at the sheffields and then And you came into the light.
