In short
Jutes (musician; Diet Coke devotee) and Jo Saltz bond over childhood snacks, touring food rituals, and fast-food cravings—especially Diet Coke and American Taco Bell—plus Demi Lovato’s “Michelin-worthy” avocado toast and homemade meals.
Guest backgrounds
Jutes is a hard-rock musician and Diet Coke lover with a famous wife, Demi Lovato, who wrote a cookbook and cooks more than he does.
Key claims
He prefers Diet Coke in cans over fountain and bottles; McDonald’s fountain hits consistently. Taco Bell quality is better in the U.S. than Canada. He makes protein “ice cream” using Fairlife protein shakes plus zero-sugar pudding mix. Demi’s avocado toast beats his because she uses better bread and seasoning.
Notable examples
90s pudding cups, ketchup chips, Dunkaroos, dry “Mr. Noodles,” and gas-station cinnamon rolls/Cracker Barrel cinnamon roll pie; Taco Bell orders (Crunch Wrap, cheesy gordita crunch, cheesy roll-ups); post-show Waterburger/Whataburger; In-N-Out fries debate; Boulevard Steakhouse and Mastro’s butter cake; Bacio ice cream.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Welcome to Snacks, the show where we talk about the craziest food obsessions of your favorite stars. I'm Jo Saltz, the editorial director of Delish. Today, our guest is a super talented musician, but he's also my new food bestie. He's a Diet Coke lover, he's a really hard rocker, and he's got a really famous wife. Please welcome my new BFF, Jutes. We'll be right back.
0:26So we're going to bond over our love for Diet Cokes. We are.
0:30Jutes:I feel like we're family now. I feel like we're part of a very kindred spirit. And if you know, you know. Yes. If you're a part of it, you know. How long have you been into the D.C.? Since a child, my mom was always just like, you know, trying to not bring as much sugar as possible into the house. So it's always been diet sodas my whole life. As a little kid, I would say like sneaking a regular Coke was like, like a lot. like i was like let's go this is awesome but now i've it's the taste of a dc is just better okay from a purist dc like perspective what type of diet coke tastes the best can can for me can yeah fountain is like too inconsistent wow yeah can is like i don't know something metallic and good about it just crispy like i can get into that like i am honestly sort of against bottle diet coke how Bottle is too bubbly, no?
1:29Jutes:I feel like every time I take a swig, it's like it's traveling too far and fizzing by the time it hits my mouth. I'm getting like a mouthful of fizz. Wait, why are you breaking the science down so well here? You know what I'm talking about, right? A hundred percent. Well, can, by the way, keeps it cold, right? And can, I guess to your point, it's like a closer distance. But I got to say McDonald's fountain is just like... Always hits. McDonald's is his own thing, though. That's not like fountain. it's mcdonald's fountain like they get a different grade of syrup i feel like than every other fountain place all almost soda at mcdonald's has like that bite that extra bite it's the bite yeah yeah that's why honestly why i can't drink regular coke even as a kid it was just like too syrupy like yeah it's like sticky almost yeah it's a lot as a little kid i was just like i guess deprived of sugar so if i was at a friend's house or something like as a kid it was like super whole green bread like zero sugar whatever so i'd go to my friend's house and just eating a slice of wonder bread and having a regular coke was like i was like oh this is like me going to the club right now as a child like i was going crazy oh by the way i love that we're like we're like yeah my mom was like a real purist she only wanted us to drink saccharin or like right right i feel like i don't even know if we knew that at the time who even knows yeah i'm like what is even his diet coke i don't even know okay and so then like let me ask you one more polarizing question diet coke or Coke Zero?
2:55Like, can you substitute with Coke Zero?
2:57Jutes:I feel like Coke Zero is better than regular Coke. And I feel like they're doing like some cool, like, I want to say that there's like a holiday vanilla Coke Zero that happened this last holiday, which is just nuts. Like, that's good. With a little vanilla in it, I think Coke Zero is fine. But just as like bare bones, it's DC. By a lot. Like can't tell you how much like in the deepest part of my heart. I'm enjoying this conversation because like and I want to go further and I'm just gonna go one more step further and then we can talk about other things. But we're gonna go all the way. Like have you done the coke experience like one of those big fancy like fountain machines that are only at.
3:41OK, let me set the scene. I don't even think I've heard of it. OK, let me set the scene. and they have them at like AMC theaters or like I'm trying to think oh those giant machine where you just like our choosing yes and you're like okay Diet Coke like cherry yes maybe a little
3:58Jutes:orange or whatever so have you done those I have and I don't remember I usually am quick to go for a vanilla if there's I love a vanilla I do a little cherry vanilla mix yeah I mean you can't go wrong what a delight you are I'm so happy you're here did we just become best friends over Diet Cokes the fridge cig you calling it a fridge cig is the greatest phrase ever known to man yeah like it's just that's exactly what it is people are like coke zero is better because it doesn't have what is the aspartame or what yeah and I'm like that's but that's the point give me the aspartame 100 because I'm not smoking cigarettes anymore and I'm not drinking so I'm like let me get a hit of something I mean if that's my worst vice because I don't drink either like that's my worst vice like fine like let it be in this world that we're living in if that's the worst you're doing like 1 ,000 % like let me have let me have my space please all right I want to talk a little bit about so you went back to your childhood so what were good sex like what is the childhood snack that sends you right back well it was the 90s pudding cups were huge I don't know what kids are eating these days but where'd you up in Canada and Ottawa.
5:09Oh yeah, Ottawa, Canada. What was Canadian kids snacks like?
5:12Jutes:Like ketchup chips is a good one that is very slept on in America and like kind of like people are like what and I'm like what's more American than ketchup? Ketchup, barbecue, sour cream and onion and salt and vinegar. I mean that's a party right there. That is kind of a party. That's a party. And that's what you used to eat as a kid? Yeah when I go back to Canada I still do. That's a my favorite chip. I'm trying to think of other snacks as a kid. I mean, Fruit by the Foot was like a super big treat. Dunkaroos. Did you guys have Dunkaroos? We had Dunkaroos. And those are still like, you can buy them on eBay.
5:47Jutes:And you just like, you take the tiniest amount of icing until the last one and you just, just the whole thing. Why did they go away? I don't know. Those were like, in my day, you would, you would like barter at lunchtime and you'd be like, I got dunkaroos and basically you have like your pick of like someone's sandwich like you would get their main course kind of thing at lunch um dunkaroos was a very valuable item so your mom let you had dunkaroos no oh god i would have to trade for you were like sneaking okay i'd have to give up like i would be super lunch yeah dunk malnourished just to get the dunkaroos um also like mr noodle like Chinese noodle packs?
6:26I don't know what that is either. Like you mean ramen? I guess ramen.
6:31Jutes:It's called Mr. Noodles in Canada, but I would eat them like dry. Like I would crush it up and then dump the thing and shake it and just eat those as a snack. Which is probably horrible for you. It's probably horrible for you, but also again, worse things have happened. I used to eat in college, I used to eat dry stovetop stuffing. Do you know what stovetop is? do you guys have like stuffing like yeah like stuffing mix like yeah and it's like it's basically because dry stuffing is just like croutons yeah yeah it's just like toasted croutons though it's like soft it's crunchy okay and because it doesn't get soft until you like add layers of liquid in and so then you um and it's like so it's stuffing flavored with it's like croutons flavored with stuffing flavor i mean what's not that delicious it's like minus the salad that's the best it's the best part um okay so i would eat that as a kid i think that weren't preparing it right like it hit different somehow like the noodles like not boiling them and just crunching on them was like it somehow was better are you a crunchy person generally or a chewy person i used to it used to be like mainly crunchy mainly savory but lately it's been like i've been on having a bit of a sweet tooth.
7:49Jutes:Where do you think that's so like ice cream and kind of gooey more like I don't know probably my wife she has a sweet tooth. I was never really into like chocolate I mean I liked chocolate I wasn't one of the people who didn't like chocolate but it wasn't like I was crazy about it it was like chips and salty stuff and popcorn I love movie popcorn but now I have this crazy sweet tooth I have ice cream every day now. What's ice cream flavor i make my own with a ninja creamy what using protein shakes oh so i'm trying to ice cream i make it really well plus i get these brownies and i put half a brownie in and mix it in and it's basically like brownie batter chocolate okay what is your recipe tell us because we're actually you're going to tell me what this is and then in the delish kitchen we're going to make your recipe and try it it's so simple it's like the most basic because i'm I'm pretty lazy when it comes to chefing up my creamies, but it is Fairlife Protein, like a Fairlife Protein shake.
8:50Jutes:So chocolate, I'm assuming. Sometimes, but then sometimes you go vanilla and then you add like three heaping tablespoons of, I do zero sugar jello, like pudding mix. But sometimes I go vanilla with the butterscotch pudding mix. So you got like butterscotch ice cream going on, throw a little brownie in there and it's like brownie batter butterscotch, crazy. Or I do chocolate with the chocolate mix. Sometimes I do salted caramel pudding mix, but all zero sugar. So this is me like being like, how do I have ice cream every single day of the week, but also like not go crazy before bed and eat a bunch of sugar every night.
9:31I am like, I really was hoping that it was like you and like a pint of Ben and jerry's is what i was hoping i like what it was that got out of hand and i was like i'm not willing
9:45Jutes:to stop eating ice cream every day so i have to find a way to make the ice cream like a little bit more reasonable and then now if i like go to a restaurant or something like that and i have ice cream it's just like a crazy treat it's such a treat um ice cream does hit differently right i do feel like there's something about that that like when i'm feeling any type of way i could have like ice cream and then I think about the protein ice cream is that I can have it for breakfast if I want I mean you could you could I mean crazy you probably should I'm thinking and I have okay all right just to be clear but but God bless the creamy because I do feel like I'm gonna one-up your your your thing and you should also get a ninja slushie oh yeah and then you should make like frozen hot chocolates like it just really good milkshakes I just I'm like ninja can you just send both Jutes and I just like all the things I've made them some good money because I have really pushed a lot of people to go buy a creamy I send pictures and they're like whoa affiliate codes I really push the ninja creamy like I have sold if I was making commission on that I could probably like chill on the music you probably should probably think about a side gig as a ninja representative.
11:02I feel like that's something that could like.
11:05Jutes:If they call me, I will pick. I feel like your next tour sponsored by Ninja could be legit. All right. So let's talk about because you mentioned Demi and I want to talk about that a little bit, too, because on a scale of one to ten, what would you consider yourself as a foodie? Ten being like maximum foodie. Pretty low. I'm easy to please. Interesting. Yeah. I think of foodies as like. Adventurous. Oh, like someone who's eating like someone who's just. usual yeah like kind of not a connoisseur that's a whole other level but a foodie someone who's like always trying to find a new place and i'm like i'll go to the same place every day of the week but okay so then let me change that i would say i would say on a scale from one to ten to answer your question i would say i'm like a i'll say a four okay or a five because i do enjoy i love going to eat well i was going to say what if instead of foodie i said food lover what are you on a like how important is food in your life one to ten I love food I do love food and I'm I'm not one of those people that can just eat food for like sustenance no I'm really bad at that I tried I've gone through periods where I've tried to and it's just like it never like sets in as like oh this is my lifestyle now I'm okay with this like I'm fighting tooth and nail the whole time yeah yeah so I would say as a food lover we'll say seven because I know There's there's levels and there are people I know people that are like really into food Well, I mean Demi your wife wrote a cookbook.
12:31So I'm like so where do you where does she fall on the spectrum of foodie? And she's higher than me.
12:36Jutes:Okay, she's higher than me. I she will get Tired of stuff because I'm just ordering it all the time. She'll be like, you know, I'm pretty burnt out on this Whatever, but I can like eat the same thing all the time That's why I don't put myself super high because she'll be like I want variety and I want to and I'm like I have the same breakfast every day like when I go to eat I make this I get the same thing I make it home like I'm so simple when it comes to food all right I'm gonna ask you a million questions now okay so what do you get all the time like what are you ordering all the time I order from this place called goop kitchen which is like a chicken broccoli rice thing that's me being healthy sorry is it goop like Gwyneth Paltrow's yeah oh yeah yeah oh I like I order from there a lot I didn't know she had a kitchen I'm so bad at knowing things it's good it's just in LA or is this all over the place okay I don't even know if there's multiple in LA it might just be the one I have no okay so you order something healthy from I try that's me being healthy a massive Taco Bell guy what's your order a Taco Bell a lot of times it's a good good old-fashioned crunch wrap I like the The cheesy gordita crunch with the Dorito shell is really good.
13:50Jutes:That's an order. I mean, cheesy roll-ups with extra cheese. Got to have extra cheese. Was this a teenage thing that has followed you into your... No. In Canada, Taco Bell is like dog food. Oh, really? It's not even like... If you have it, you don't tell anyone about it. Really? It's like a shameful thing. I don't know why. And they're always in kind of like scary part of town. And yeah, Taco Bell is not the same at all. In America, it's like the quality is better. Like I have Canadian friends that like first night in L.A. when they visit, they're like, we're getting Taco Bell. Quality is just better.
14:23Jutes:And it's like it's a thing. So wait. So you're you're you're in America. And like so what happens one day you stumble into a Taco Bell and you're like, wait, what? Taco Bell. And I was like, why is it ordering Taco Bell? Like it's it's just this never I've like never ordered Taco Bell with my friends ever in Canada. but I have gotten it in like if I'm like on a road trip and there's like a truck stop that like they're always attached to KFCs yeah yeah yeah yeah they're here sort of like that too yeah so like sometimes it's just like KFC or Taco Bell and right and you'd go for it but like you don't feel good after like yeah it's it's it's totally different here though it's like if someone mentions Taco Bell everyone's like let's go like Taco Bell is like it's a lifestyle and so my friends were ordering it whatnot and they're like what do you mean you don't have taco bell like it's like a twice a week thing here yeah and then obviously i tried it and was like this is my life is different now everything's different from this moment on and now it's like probably my favorite fast food so when you order taco bell what is your wife saying is she like loves it she loves it yeah yeah yeah what's your order together we get a lot of the same things like i wasn't she put me onto the cheesy roll-ups she loves the mexican pizza that's like her that's her go-to is Mexican pizza.
15:39Jutes:She put me onto the cheesy roll-ups, but we get a lot of the same stuff. Sometimes we do mix it up and like the nice thing is like they're always with these new items. They're so good with the lunches. So sometimes I'm just like, well, we got to try these and like, and then they'll take them away and then you have to like kind of grieve a little bit. I know. And then what do you, do you cook at home at all? Do you cook? So I'm the breakfast guy more so than any other meal. And I do, I just learned how to do like a like a soft French scramble eggs or whatever so good that my friend's girlfriend taught me how to do because I was like your eggs are better than mine how do you make them and she explained it whatever so I do a lot of scrambled eggs I like making parfaits simple ones but I like parfaits yeah um I do breakfast sandwiches sometimes sometimes avocado I used to make, Demi used to ask me to make her avocado toast.
16:32Jutes:Oh. And then she just, like, learned how to make it so much better. It's not even close. Mine is, like, Canadian Taco Bell, and hers is, like, Michelin star. So now she does the avocado toast. Wait, what makes her avocado toast better than yours? I don't know. It's just, like, there's, it's, like, she just uses better bread and prepares it better. And I'm like, so just throw a couple pieces in the, in the toaster and spread it out. Like, I'm just so basic with it, but she's like, no, it has to be this bread and I'm going to use this seasoning. And you mean ingredients matter? Like they all say.
17:07And she knows it. Yeah. She knows what she's doing. And, and I mean, she's just like, obviously like it's been a big part of her life, uh,
17:15Jutes:the past few years and she's grown a lot as a cook. And so I'm just like, yeah, there's a lot of things where I'm like, oh, I'm obsolete now as far as the cook goes. But eggs, I'm still like pretty good with the eggs. I make good eggs. And I'm trying to think of what else I make. Very simple. Does she make dinner a lot for you? And what do you request? What's your number one meal that you request from her? Oh, she makes this chicken and veg. I usually, I'll take care of the veg. Okay. like i'll do the veg and it's still her telling you what to do but like that's i'm like sous chef doing the veg what's the method what's the veg method oh it'll be like uh sweet potatoes broccoli carrots uh like snap peas and then i can't remember i have to follow her directions pretty close but it's like there's seasoning and there's like oil and all this stuff and then bake them it's like the easy part of roasting deliciousness it's yeah it's the easy part of the recipe that i can handle um and then she makes this amazing chicken with this amazing like creamy white sauce it's nuts and she does a barbecue chicken that's so good too yeah i get spoiled i just love that for you though yeah her newfound love for cooking i'm just like i'm so here for it you're like let's taste it especially because she's got a cocoa coming out i feel like she's probably been testing a lot of those recipes too and you've probably been reaping the benefits and i can just go through the thing and like she'll just be like pick something and and she'll make it and it's just but then you said you have a sweet tooth what's your what's your so your ice cream i'm an ice cream guy i also love butter cake love butter cake if there's butter cake on the menu that's not something that shows itself very often and when you find one when you find it and then there's some places that i know are just like they never miss with the butter cake.
19:13Jutes:Yes. What's your favorite place? I think Boulevard Steakhouse in Sherman Oaks has taken the crown for butter cake in the city. At least that's my opinion. We're going to have to try that. I think Mastro's is amazing and probably the most known for their butter cake. Is that in LA? Yeah, it's also a steakhouse. I might blow your mind because I'm pretty sure Jenny's ice cream has a butter cake ice cream. Oh, whoa. So you might try a little butter cake in your Ninja Creamy. I mean, oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I would do that for sure. You should try that and then circle back. But I think I need to just get it from Jenny's.
19:53If you're already having butter cake, there's no way I'm doing the protein shake.
19:58Jutes:That's just gone. That's so out the window. It's so upsetting. It's one or the other, yeah. You're like, here, let's make this slightly better. No, it's not going to be. It's already a wrap. If you're putting butter cake in anything, then I think you've got to go all the way. there's a really good um like birthday ice cream cake ice cream at van lewin really good like chunks of icing in it their their ice cream is really is really good do you have an ice cream like a brand i know you're you're on your protein thing but you have an ice cream brand that you go to all the time it's more like restaurants i don't really buy ice cream pints from the store it's like I'll get a pint from I guess it's the same thing but um what's it called bat uh like Baskin Robbins you know what I'm trying to say uh Bacio oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's fancy that one it's so good yeah they got like a pretzel it's like a pretzel something ice cream that's like it's like a top five in the city for me it's so good i don't even know what it's called but it is really i know but i know exactly uh i think butter buttercream does any buttercream pretzel yeah buttercream buttercream pretzel and that one's yeah you definitely want to get a pint of that i don't want to i'll leave the entire thing and we'll be right
21:28back all right i the other thing i want to ask you a lot about is your touring life because i imagine i'm and i've asked this of a lot of different guests that i've had whether they're like stand-up comedians or um just like eating on the road and is that like a joy for you or is that really hard like do you love going to different cities leg of my last tour i was
21:50Jutes:hitting the gym all this stuff beforehand leading up to it i was like i gotta get in shape and i was eating i feel like fairly disciplined and whatnot and i went into the tour really like killing it first half of the tour i was like dialed some guys on the crew i got my guy who does my merch ethan he's like 22 years old or something this guy and he like he's a big gym guy but like he can eat literally as much as he wants. God bless 22 year olds. So like, he's just like, it's like cinnamon rolls every day, like just whatever he can find going crazy. And I was super dialed and I wasn't engaging, um, too much.
22:28Jutes:And then there was like a halfway point where it was like, I don't know what happened. A switch got flipped and I was just like, kind of like, all right, let's do this. What's your gateway food. What, like what spins cinnamon rolls? Like you just see them everywhere. I don't know why, but like gas stations have like crazy cinnamon rolls. There's like Cinnabons attached to the gas station. We were on tour during Thanksgiving and we ended up at a Cracker Barrel in Wichita for Thanksgiving and they had cinnamon roll pie. I was like, what is going on? Cinnamon roll is making a run this year. Why do we need that?
23:03Jutes:I don't know, but it's like I can't say no. Cinnamon rolls are just like, it's everything you would ever want in a food. Also Cracker Barrel is just like, there's just something about that place. they had that in canada at all i think that was always my memory of cracker barrel was like driving through i lived near the new york border yeah yeah and like driving through like kind of not major yeah exactly yeah and i would always see cracker barrel and i just remember the mac and cheese being just insane cracker barrel was also like a late like late 90s early aughts thing like i didn't i grew up in new jersey and like we didn't have cracker barrel until i was like until like the early 2000s.
23:42Right. So I feel like it doesn't surprise me that it didn't exist there. But now, for some reason, they have cornered the market on just like homes, fun, cinnamon roll pies. You know? Why?
23:55Jutes:It was one of those things where I'm like, it's not going to be as good as it looks. And then I had it and I was like, it's better. And then you pass a Cracker Barrel every 20 miles. Yeah, you start noticing them everywhere you go. And yeah, so on tour, it's like I said, I'm like very like ritualistic or like I can just get into a loop and like especially before shows when there's nerves involved. Yeah. I'm very much like at this time, like I go and I do my sound check right after sound check. I have the same sandwich. Which is? it's like a turkey cheese and maybe lettuce but usually even simpler than that like turkey cheese and like mustard maybe mayo super simple super simple right and by the end of tour i was i was like all right i am pretty over this at the beginning and up to like three quarters of the way through i was like i don't know why i feel like i could never get bored of this sandwich like it just always hits but by the end tour i was pretty over it but that is my sandwich i have every time and then i go do meet and greet and then i come back and i don't really eat a ton before the show and then after the show it's always like what is it it's like find the closest thing it's like raid the cabinets on the bus or the fridge and the snack that i thought was going to last me all week like finish it in a night like after a show and having not eaten a lot before a show i'm like just ravenous like i'm so hungry so what's the craziest thing you've eaten after a show we hit a water burger drive-through on foot in the middle of the night um and got breakfast after a show one time because our bus obviously wouldn't fit through the drive-through and all of us were trying to jump to like trigger whatever the weighted thing on the ground is to be like yo because they were their doors were locked and then the guy was like yo you guys can just walk around i'll serve you like we're not supposed to on foot but he could see that there was no way we were getting through and we all got like whataburger how do you like it i love whataburger i think it's like a premium uh fast food spot they don't have them in la do they they don't have them in la i feel like they only go as far west as like arizona or something maybe they're definitely in they're in texas oh they're in las vegas oh okay i had it in las vegas um i feel like they're all over texas all over texas that's where i first had it yeah was touring through town.
26:16Okay, so Whataburger or In-N-Out, where do you stand?
26:20Jutes:In-N-Out is like, that's the home team. You know what I mean? Just living here, it just feels like, I'm an In-N-Out fry hater. I hate In-N-Out fry. Oh my God, we are best friends. Yeah, we're very aligned. I literally just had this argument with my sister because she lives up in Sacramento and every time I go to see her, we're like, let's get In-N-Out and I'm just like, why are these fries so bad? Has to be animal style just to like give them flavor yeah like coat they're not even salted well i don't know what's wrong and they know that they're like that's the one like bad grade on the report card everything else is just like don't change a thing also but is this a problem everywhere because also i'll be honest that like generally i've never eat out in and out i always get takeout so but they're always cold but i'm like are are they better hot like am i just not eating them properly or are they just like bad order them undercooked now to get them a little softer and like kind of closer to like are you crazy that's the craziest thing i've ever heard yeah you can get them overcooked so they're crispier if you like crispy fries yes i do who likes undercooked fries like mcdonald's fries are like soft no yeah yeah get them undercooked so this is our first fight and our first disagreement on food okay totally i like don't understand what you're saying we agree that we don't like the fries.
27:43Jutes:I agree. I'm just trying to do something about it. You're trying to do something but like what are you trying to make it spaghetti? I don't even understand. I'm making them softer. Not that undercooked. Just like they're cardboard right? They're just like flavorless. I feel like they're like unremarkably texturally and cardboardy. So I'm like trying to give them a little life. It feels like maybe they like maybe overdo it. Well I guess my point is I can't tell if and this is honest so like if someone from in and out wants to yell at me like my actual issue is like am i like do i need to eat them hot and fresh there or is are they getting cardboardy because i've taken them out and brought them home and so that's where i'm like i can't i feel like i've had them i've definitely eaten them in in and out before like on tour again it's a bus so like we'll just find one and go like there was one in utah i'm pretty sure randomly we were all at a planet fitness and there was just an in and out beside it and i was like this is that's also a very good marketing very awesome yeah um but we didn't work out and we just hit the planet that's exactly how you should do it yeah um and i did eat it eat them there and it was still like just not they're not great but animal style like obviously they're coated and the sauce is amazing and yeah this is good so i just i appreciate so wait so given all the like you're all your devices what fast food are you choosing if you have the full lineup i mean i feel like you're a road food expert at this point like you're like pull the bus over we gotta get so i try not to i try my best it's mostly like an after show if there's something nearby okay because my band will order food before the show sometimes and so i'll be like oh there's a water burger nearby or like i'll see what they got yeah and then afterwards like if there's like a mcdonald's right beside the venue we're having mcdonald's after the show that's just convenience i mean it's just like what's your order it depends sometimes a big mac sometimes um crispy chicken oh that's a good one yeah like the real crispy not a mcchicken the crispy chicken yeah yeah yeah i don't get mcdonald's very often though it's one that i used to like kind of go for more as a kid yeah because i had the mcflurries and all that also did you do you ask wendy's here you have wendy's wendy's yeah wendy's was a big thing when i was a kid and i just don't know anyone that even gets wendy's now kind of falling off the radar i do feel like it's a little bit of a like a sleeper hit i feel like wendy's fries are superior see i haven't even had them in so long they're really good they used to have like baked potatoes that were good oh baked potatoes i i loved a wendy's baked potato yeah wendy's was like a go-to in canada growing up yeah no it was i would say it was a big it was big in the 90s and i mean i think when wendy's like when i was a kid so i'm like a child of the 80s so like 90s i was like you know in high school so and i feel like wendy's came on the scene as like they were trying to be weirdly like healthier like not healthy but they were like and then they were like baconators i know And then they've got like the Baconator Junior.
30:50I order like, my son ordered a son of the Baconator sandwich. I'm like, what the hell is the son of the Baconator?
Read the full transcript
30:56Jutes:Yeah, you're like, you guys just threw the script out. I'm just like, these aren't even, yeah, these aren't even words. Like, I don't even know what's on this. But they had the baked potato. They were like kind of the first fast food restaurant to have salads. And so, and chili. I don't know why we think chili's healthy. But like, so they were like trying to be like, I just remember that being like, we're not going to get fast food. We're going to get Wendy's. I remember that being like the conversation, you know, like and then like the frosty was like to me. I would think that's like Subway as a kid.
31:24Jutes:I was like, yeah, yeah. Subway is like healthy. They became that became when that came on the scene later. And then it was like, you know, Subway and then like Panera, you know, then you had all these like Panera wasn't one until I moved here that I really discovered Panera. And I'm sure that they are in Canada. Like I definitely think they are. It's just never something I had. And then I moved here and I like Panera. I'm going to reel from... I like their soup, their cheddar broccoli soup. Cheddar broccoli, their tomato. They've got great soups. I am going to send somebody to a Canadian Taco Bell to verify your concerns because I really do feel strongly that, like, that's a shame that they can't get it together up there.
32:00Although maybe it's for the betterment of the Canadian public. You don't need to sink down that spiral. Maybe, but it was like...
32:07Jutes:I feel like my life got better when I started having Taco Bell. It's just like, what's the point? It's to be happy, right? That's what food is supposed to be. Okay, I am going to say, I'm going to do a couple of rapid fire for you. But I feel like some of these we've already gotten through. So, all right, gas station buy. What's the thing you buy at the gas station? Probably, what are they called? So it's like, they're the thing that's in, this is a weird one. There's the thing that's in like a Chex Mix. They're like the brown. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The little sandwich. which they're like called bread crisps or something.
32:43Oh, my God.
32:44Jutes:I think it starts with a G. Yeah, Giordano's, Giordino's. Okay, wait, Sarita, you got to have bread chips from, look up. Like such a weird one to throw out there, but it is. They're bread chips from the Chex Mix. And they're dark brown. Yes, and they're dark brown. They're like almost like Gartettos. Boom. That is the best. It feels like there's some judging. No, no, no. There's no judgment because, okay, so let's look at it. You have the Chex Mix. What is your go-to? What's the best piece of it? That. The bread. And then they now offer that as its own bag. Yeah, that's a great answer. I used to always get Chex Mix.
33:21Jutes:And then I was like, I don't want the pretzels at all. But I'm eating them because they're there. And then I'm like, these are like the highlight of the bag. So then when I saw that, I was like, oh, done. That is a fantastic answer, honestly. But also, I think the only place you can find those is like in a gas station. Yeah. I don't know that I've ever laid eyes on that at a supermarket. It doesn't exist. It doesn't exist. It doesn't exist. And that is wild. And I wouldn't even, if I'm in a grocery store and saw them, I'm just, there's no way. It has to be like limited options. And then you're like, oh, that's what I'm getting.
33:52That's how I feel about combos. Do you guys have combos?
33:55Jutes:Combos is the weirdest. Me and my friend always take pictures when we see, like, I've never seen someone order combos, but they're stocked to the ceiling everywhere. I'm always like, yo, why is there like 40 flavors of combos? And there's who's buying all someone at the R &D combo at the R &D Department of Convos is like working their ass off. If someone was walking past you on the street eating a bag of combos, you would like take it in. You'd be like, oh, they're eating combos. Well, but also like the only place I see those, you don't see those in a supermarket. You only see them in like a gas station or airports.
34:28Yeah, or airports.
34:30Jutes:Always in airports. But also airport snacking to me is just like also a different that hits a little bit differently too. And then I'm just like, what am I even eating? I get a lot of like, yeah, I get stuff that I never get anywhere else, like pop chips or popcorners or whatever, like weird like rice cake things. Yes, or like bean chips. Like I'm like, what is this? I eat chicken chips. Yeah, yeah. On a plane, you're just like. I'll eat it. It's so strange because you're like trapped in the sky and you're like, yeah, I'll roll the dice. Whatever. Stroopwafel. What do you got? United? Give me whatever weird thing.
35:02This might destroy my stomach. Quinoa, chocolate covered quinoa bites. I'm like, yeah, I don't even know what this is. okay wait i'm obsessed with you this is so funny okay overrated food trend
35:14Jutes:like thing you're so sick of but i partake in it yeah everything being a protein snack and it being like that that makes it healthy but i'm the guy i'm doing protein ice cream every night so i'm i'm like critical of myself for being like ah the protein chips do you eat a lot of cottage cheese in your house is there a lot of cottage cheese i've hated cottage cheese my whole life just because visually it throws me off until like literally months ago demi was like yo it is just cheese though if you try it and i tried it and i was like it's just cheese it's delicious it's amazing yeah i mean you like ricotta it's like ricotta it's so good i love cottage cheese now hated it my whole life wasn't even willing to try it because it's just obviously obviously it's off-putting looking yes but it's really good it also has a weird connotation like it's a good it's a good source of protein yeah yeah protein we're here for protein all right food you irrationally hate olives cilantro when they ask for my allergy at restaurants i say cilantro same 100 yeah they're like are you allergic and i'm like sure basically yeah yeah like don't test me yeah i'll get sick here it will be there will be a reaction for sure 100 cilantro but olives interestingly second up olives you know how much see it's irrational because i was in new orleans We had an off day in New Orleans on my last tour.
36:34Jutes:And we're eating these like famous sandwiches at this like Napoleon spot, which is like apparently famous. And this is the item. I'm eating it. I'm like, damn, these taste like pizza. These are so good. My friend was like, it's the olives. And I was like, ah, now I don't think it tastes that good. Like my brain switched. And I was like, now I have to start getting the olives off. And he was like, bro, you liked it a second ago. And I'm like, but I know they're olives now. Are you my son? I feel like this is what my daughter does, where I'm like, this has something in it that you told me once you don't like yeah she's like I won't eat it it's like a stance that you made yeah yeah I gotta stick by it okay and then last question dream meal that Demi would make you like anything in the world no dishes to clean up I feel like I always have to say that because like dishes are the worst part of making I'm trying to think of, I'm trying, there's a bunch that she's made recently.
37:33Jutes:I'm trying to think of what the dream one is. She makes a mean chili, which is weird because chili isn't a food that I'll ever order. But her chili is just fire. It's really good. What is it? What makes it so good? Is it spicy? No. Oh. Beef? Chicken? It's beef, I think, and it has chips in it. It has sour cream, and it's insane. I don't know if that's my dream dream. There's just a lot that I've been like, whoa, this is insane. It also just feels good when someone makes you a meal. It kind of doesn't have to be. It really just feels like it comes from the heart for some reason. I don't know why.
38:14A hundred percent.
38:15Jutes:It really does turn your life around. Yeah. I'm obsessed with you, And I'm so glad that we got to bond over all these things. We're going to have words a little bit about the In-N-Out fries situation. Hey, come for me. But I'm going to, like, order them overdone and underdone, and then we're going to put them to the test. It's not like you think. It doesn't taste like it's not cooked. It's just not dried out. It's, like, right before that happens. Maybe that's, like, so because, you know, sometimes when they get overdone, they're like those potato sticks. But I also love those. See, it's either those are, like, slightly have some life to them.
38:50Jutes:But I also like when they're like crispy. Like I will be the person digging in the corner of the bag and like crunching on them. Well, bag fries are categorically like the best fries ever. There's something about them. But I will tell you that all I can think of now is like droopy fries. No, they're definitely not droopy. I don't think they can be. Like they literally cut them from like they're naturally stiff. and they want to be cardboard so bad that I try not to let it get to that point. All right, I'm going to do it. You should try it. Thank you for joining us today. I'm so excited to get to talk to you.
