In short

Brie Larson and Courtney McBroom promote their cookbook Party People and discuss how to throw better, less labor-intensive gatherings centered on snacks, queso, chips, and playful “party” traditions (including compostable servingware and “dump parties”). They also do snack superlatives and argue about whether hot dogs are sandwiches.

Guest backgrounds

Brie Larson is an actor and co-author of Party People. Courtney McBroom is a longtime food lover/cook and co-author of Party People; she’s from Texas (“queso town”) and Brie is from Sacramento.

Key claims

Family traditions often have real “science” behind them (e.g., hot vs. cooled twice-baked potatoes). Parties don’t need a reason—celebrate “here now.” Compostable plates/cups can reduce guilt for gatherings. Thanksgiving can be optimized by skipping turkey for faster dishes.

Notable examples

“Skip’s Peach Chicken” (25 minutes); queso made during a 2016 presidential debate party; a vegan cleanse that ended with driving to Taco Bell; chip cootery board; Hot Dog Festival with trivia and sponsors; snack picks like Takis, jalapeno chips, chili-cheese Fritos, and beef jerky.

We're here with Courtney McBroom and Brie Larson, who are the authors of the new book, Party People. And I need to know, are you Party People?

1:30Brie Larson:Obviously. Yes, we are.

1:32Courtney McBroom:So in honor of your Party People status, we brought you guys Party Poppers. And I got to tell you, I'm a little bit nervous because I've never opened one of these, but can we open? How do these work? You just twist the bottom. Hold firm twist bottom. Can I, do we all do it right now or do we kind of like pick and choose a time during the interview to do it? Oh, random. We'll just do it now? Okay, we'll do it now. Okay. Sorry, I like taking it. I think it's difficult. I actually appreciate that, but let's see. Ready? One, two, three. Ouch!

2:04Courtney McBroom:And then they all went deaf. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh, I'm pressing the wrong way. You get it, and then you don't get it. Those are so wild. I guess I've never done that before. Those are fireworks. That was? Welcome to the party.

2:22Brie Larson:Welcome to the party, people. Again, again.

2:24Courtney McBroom:I want to do this all the time. I just feel like that was so much more extra than I was expecting it to be. I'm so sorry to whoever has to clean this up. I was just about to say, I think it might have to be me, because I couldn't possibly be like, here, can someone get this? Can somebody please clean this off? We'll help you. We'll do it quick. Jeez, those are loud. That was real.

2:45Brie Larson:So how did party people come to be? We knew each other for probably at least eight years before lessons in chemistry. Wow.

2:52Courtney McBroom:So it was 2016. It was the presidential debate party. Oh, boy. The least fun. The least fun party you could ever attend. We make that party fun. We can do anything.

3:02Brie Larson:Yeah, that's true. That's true. Maybe that was what it was. Yeah.

3:05Courtney McBroom:And I was making my signature queso. What's your recipe? It's in the book. You got it. It's in the book. Yeah, you can have it. We won't give it away. But so I was making that queso, a version of it. And it was still in the pot. It was still melting. And Brie comes in. And she's like, ah, it's nice to meet you. And I'm like, oh, my God. what's that gets a chip dips it in like it's not even fully melted not even finished and she but she loved it obviously and i was like oh and i knew i was like anyone who loves queso this much much like even like not even finished queso like it i was like friends for life and and how was the

3:38Brie Larson:queso oh it's amazing the queso has always been amazing and it's only improved like she continues to tweak it you know a little bit here and there she's never not tweaking are you from queso town

3:49Courtney McBroom:Like, are you from a real queso place? Oh, yeah, Texas. She's from queso town. I'm from queso town.

3:54Brie Larson:I am queso town, USA.

3:56Courtney McBroom:I am the mayor, some might say. Mayor queso town. Yeah. Some half said. I mean, I honestly don't hate that for you. How about, but where are you from, Pri? I'm from Sacramento. Oh, cool.

4:06Brie Larson:Which is the capital of.

4:08Courtney McBroom:Not queso. Sacramento has a chain restaurant that I'd never heard of before called Twin Peaks, which is a ski lodge themed restaurant a la Hooters. Oh, Twin Peaks. Oh my gosh, that's great. Is this a new thing?

4:27Brie Larson:I think it's a new thing. I mean, it doesn't sound like something that my parents were very keen to take me to as a child.

4:33Courtney McBroom:I was just gonna say, I've never been there, but I was looking up fun restaurants to go to in Sacramento because I was visiting my sister and Twin Peaks came up and I was like, what's the click? Give this the click. And then I was like, huh. I asked my staff, have you ever been there? She's like, I've never been there. Yeah, good to know. Do they also serve delicious chicken wings? I hope so. I feel like, what's ski lodge food? Hot chocolate? I don't know.

4:54Brie Larson:I know, that's all I can think of is like, yeah, what's ski lodge food?

4:57Courtney McBroom:Also, Sacramento, the last thing you want is like ski lodge. It's so hot every time I go there.

5:03Brie Larson:Is it?

5:04Courtney McBroom:I don't know. I guess sometimes it's not, but in the summer.

5:06Brie Larson:It's kind of, yeah. I just feel like Sacramento is just like a place. It's a place. Sorry to my fellow people from Sacramento. I'm just like, Sacramento is a place.

5:12Courtney McBroom:But now you guys are food lovers. And then so then you started working together on lessons in chemistry.

5:18Brie Larson:Yes. I've always been a food lover, love to cook, love to eat, love to go to restaurants. The culinary arts are a big deal in my life.

5:28Courtney McBroom:So getting that role must have been a big deal. Well, I developed it.

5:31Brie Larson:So I like I there's many reasons why I sought that out and wanted to make it. And one of the reasons was that, and was this concept of food being a way that we show love, a way that we eat. And that it is chemistry. That it is, that's the truth of it. And there's a lot of times that we forget that, but I've learned through, I mean, I learned through making this book, putting my grandma's twice baked potatoes, and I have a very visceral memory, which my entire life is Thanksgiving, my mom and my grandma with oven mitts with piping hot baked potatoes and they're scooping the filling out and filling and putting it in you know a blender or a food processor with sour cream and butter and then when I started making it myself I was like I'm at home I don't need to I always thought that they were running late for Thanksgiving and this is why they did it this way and then I let the potatoes cool and I did it and it turned into glue and I called my grandma and was like what happened what did I do wrong and she's like oh you you did it when the potatoes were cold they need to be hot and I was like why she was like I don't know it's just how we have to do them right and and then you know these are things that I would talk about with Courtney he goes oh well actually this is because yeah it's cool but you know there's things that are traditions in your family ways that you do things that are just like there's science in them but you just think that they are like you know the folklore of your family totally yeah do you make Thanksgiving now My family, you know, I was proudly against Thanksgiving, starting from about 15 years old.

7:06Brie Larson:I just... What was your stance?

7:07Courtney McBroom:I don't like the food. Yeah, it's bad. I agree. Sorry. I'm really sorry, Delish. Please give us clicks, but also...

7:14Brie Larson:Yeah, he's shaking his head. Some people love it.

7:17Courtney McBroom:Yeah.

7:17Brie Larson:I personally don't think the juice is worth the squeeze. Yeah. I don't think... I feel like we're working way too hard for turkey. Yeah. To make turkey a thing, I'm like, relax.

7:27Courtney McBroom:Even the best turkey is still not great. It's not great.

7:32Brie Larson:And it's like a whole day activity, which I'm like, there are things that are a whole day activity that are food related that I would much prefer. Sorry.

7:40Courtney McBroom:Pause. What? Give me one.

7:42Brie Larson:Almost anything. We were talking earlier about a friend has like a latke party where you like spend all day peeling potatoes. So fun. That would be down for.

7:53Courtney McBroom:Every Christmas I make tortellini and brodo. Wow. And it's like, I'll have the filling all prepared, and then I'll invite friends over, and everyone assembles tortellini, and we eat it. And it's one of those things where we spend all day assembling, and then it takes five minutes just to slurp it up. But that type of stuff. Yeah, making traditions out of making food together, I agree, is better than just a turkey.

8:17Brie Larson:For sure. There are things that take so much labor. There's so much preparation. For me, a whole Thanksgiving meal was never that. so we actually have what my family so I don't know 15 or 16 I was like I don't like Thanksgiving and my family was like I didn't know you were even allowed to say that yeah they didn't know there was a thing you're allowed to say and I was like the potato casserole can stay right um the turkey can go the stuffing can go cranberry sauce can go actually cranberry sauce kind of came back in because my mom was like low-key I like that and it requires no effort we just take it out of the can so I was like yes but basically over the years more and or more of my family was like, actually, I don't like Thanksgiving either.

8:57Brie Larson:And then I was like, actually, I don't really like using the fine china because it's so much work. Actually, can we all just drop our shoulders a little bit and just like, what's everyone's favorite food? And let's just make that.

9:09Courtney McBroom:That's it. That's what I do. That's Thanksgiving. It's so fun.

9:12Brie Larson:So we have basically a lot, I'd say about half of our Thanksgiving is in the book currently. Oh my gosh. So my mom's peach chicken recipe, it's called Skip's Peach Chicken, That is what we do instead of a turkey. And it takes, I don't know, 25 minutes to cook.

9:29Courtney McBroom:Right, half the time. Yeah, not even a quarter of the time.

9:32Brie Larson:Yeah, not even a quarter of the time. Let's give you back your day. Right, let's be honest. Yeah, exactly. Let's give you your day back, folks. 100%. And then, you know, another thing we talk about in the book, and we talk about just, like, any chance we can get, which is, like, compostable plates and cups are, like, here and now. Yeah. And they're for real. And, like, you don't have to feel so bad about polluting the planet. and it's not something that you use for every day, but if you are going to have a gathering of friends and family, and again, this is about maximizing your time with the people that you love, unless you are the type of family that really gets a real hoot to get that dishwashing line going, which you know what?

10:11Brie Larson:I love a family that wants to do that. But if you're not that family, don't do it. get some cool chargers and put like a paper plate, a compostable paper plate on top of it and enjoy.

10:25Courtney McBroom:I mean, there's so many good looking also disposable plates right now. I'll say this, I'm campaigning right now for desserts only Thanksgiving because I am a dessert, a Thanksgiving dessert fan. I do love a pie and I do feel like I could pumpkin all day. But one of our editors here.

10:42Brie Larson:Allow me to introduce you to the pumpkin spice queen right here.

10:45Courtney McBroom:Really? well she just loves pumpkin spice i have to tell you i just really love pumpkin spice lattes i'm that girl i'm not ashamed to admit it i feel like it's okay it's still a thing i get a lot of grief i get a lot of grief sometimes not from you not from brie brie you like it i do like it she

11:03Brie Larson:just likes it so much that i never make a comment about it because it's like that rule's already taken the role of lover pumpkin spice is here so i just am here and she started going well brie hates it and I was like don't start rumors about me just because I don't like it as much as you.

11:15Courtney McBroom:Do you live in LA? So like is it like are there like cool baristas who will give you dirty looks when you order? I'm certain that the fancy coffee shops don't have pumpkin spice. Yeah I literally go to Starbucks although we were at wherever we were today. La Cologne. Yeah well Cologne does one and it's good. Well I mean my problem with the pumpkin spice is that nothing looks less genuinely like pumpkin than the bright red syrup they're pumping into it and i'm just like can you like diet orange yeah there's no pumpkin

11:47Brie Larson:no there's no pumpkin it is this is before the pumpkin it is nearly the vessel literally never

11:53Courtney McBroom:even looked at it they've never even looked at each other pumpkin spice latte and pumpkin no no no the pumpkins are involved they're not really and you know what i don't want i don't want pumpkin to be involved i don't want a pumpkin flavored coffee i want a pumpkin spice flavor yes right Like a candle.

12:08Brie Larson:And the pumpkin spice is that we've somehow just not said, it's a cinnamon and clove. Yeah. Yeah, that's what I did. Let's be honest. It's a cinnamon and clove. Maybe a little nutmeg.

12:17Courtney McBroom:Maybe a little nutmeg. A little nutmeg for sure. You know what I'm, a spice that I don't understand is mace. What? I don't know. It sounds like I'm going to murder somebody every time I put it in. I don't understand. I know. I don't think I've ever used that. Yeah. My boyfriend randomly has like six full bottles of mace in his spice cabinet. Sorry. That's something you bought. He bought for one recipe one time. And then he forgot he had it. And then he bought it seven more times.

12:43Brie Larson:What recipe are you using mace for? It's a pepper, right?

12:46Courtney McBroom:No, it's like, I don't, I'm embarrassed that I don't know. I should know this. It's a spice often used in pies. When Owen goes to edit this, can you just edit in a little pop-up video style thing? Yeah, we'd love to learn. It's mace, what this is. We need to know. Exactly. I feel like this is a lesson. I'm kind of embarrassed that I don't because as a professional chef, I should know this. You should know everything. I should know.

13:06Brie Larson:everything and there's absolutely no excuse I should know every actor 0 % of recipes

13:12Courtney McBroom:I'm sure you've ever made though have had mace in it I can't think of one thing the only thing I know that it's used for is pies maybe a mincemeat whatever happened to mincemeat pie mincemeat pies full of mace I'm telling you that's what it is

13:28Brie Larson:I will say I love a mincemeat pie I don't think I've ever had one

13:32Courtney McBroom:they're not what they sound like they're sweet and delicious and that was something I learned late in life. But I also want to understand, you said you love to party. What are your favorite kinds of parties to throw for your friends? Creative parties. I mean, the worst party is the one you never threw. So anytime you throw a party, it's going to be good. Do you need a real excuse to throw a party?

13:58Brie Larson:No, actually our whole thing, the thesis of this is that you don't need a reason really yeah or like the reason is less than what you think like it's the it's the opposite side of this culture which is like oh i'll celebrate it when i get to there and we're like no no no no

14:17Courtney McBroom:find a reason what if you don't even get to there right we're here right now let's be here now

14:22Brie Larson:and so it's like let's make the goal a little closer yeah 100 and all the other parties that you know of anniversary birthday new year's eve party whatever retirement a milestone of any kind those are still on the table and those need to be there. But we're also saying there are times in life when like maybe this is me. You're working in a foreign country and you can't celebrate your birthday in a traditional sense. There's other ways to have parties in your life. There's other things to celebrate. Maybe your 35th or your 30th birthday doesn't really feel like the big birthday. And it's like 31 and a half.

15:02Brie Larson:You're allowed to. Or let's even get off of birthdays here and say it's like you finally dumped that dum-dum that you should have dumped a while ago. Like, can't think of a party that you deserve more than that.

15:15Courtney McBroom:What do you serve for that party?

15:16Brie Larson:It depends on what it is, right?

15:18Courtney McBroom:What's the dump party? What are we serving for dump parties?

15:20Brie Larson:I would say that, like, there was a time that I went through, like, a bad breakup. And we, my girlfriends, immediately were like, we're going out. We're going to have a party. and it was just like probably as close to a bachelorette party as i could have ever gotten where it was just like girls and dancing and drinking and like if you were throwing that at home it would be like jello shots jello shots pizza um wear whatever the heck you want but be free playing music dance party maybe some dump cakes we were talking about dump cakes earlier

15:54Courtney McBroom:like that'd be a good one yeah or a rice crispy glob something that you're just like digging right

15:58Brie Larson:into, you know, like thinking about something that's like freedom, tactile, like, untamed.

16:06Courtney McBroom:Maybe like some quail or like a roast chicken because you're Freezaburg.

16:11Brie Larson:Yeah, yeah, you can do that too. Bernie loves to get really literal and punny with it.

16:16Courtney McBroom:I love a pun. Yeah.

16:57Brie Larson:Love that.

16:57Courtney McBroom:That is good. Which is, we only had ranch here, but normally I do like a sour cream and onion and a ranch and whatever. What's your favorite chip? What's your potato chip of choice?

17:08Brie Larson:I love a barbecue.

17:09Courtney McBroom:Thank you for asking. That's a good one.

17:11Brie Larson:I love like a kettle barbecue.

17:12Courtney McBroom:Like an old school barbecue or like one of those nouveau kind of like?

17:17Brie Larson:Well, recently the Siete barbecue chip is so delicious to me. It's a kettle chip, but they use avocado oil, I believe. Yeah, they do. And so I feel like a chip like that is really going to take in the oil. I like a good quality oil.

17:31Courtney McBroom:You like a good oil.

17:32Brie Larson:I do.

17:33Courtney McBroom:You really have thought about that. I appreciate that.

17:35Brie Larson:Oh, yeah. I think about it a lot. I mean, I'm a very chip forward household.

17:39Courtney McBroom:Interesting. Courtney, what's your chip? Well, I think it depends on what the... Are we talking chip with dip or just straight chip? I say let's just do purist, straight chip. Straight chip. Potato chip or any kind of chip? Any chip. Well, let's do potato. Let's do it in two parts. For potato chip, I love a jalapeno zaps situation. Super good choice. I thought I had a jalapeno here, but I don't. Incredible choice. That's a great choice. And for just like any chip, the chili cheese Frito is my favorite. That is a deep cut. It's a fantastic choice. What's your favorite regular other chip, non-potato?

18:14I'm thinking the twisty spicy ones.

18:19Brie Larson:Oh, yeah. Oh, yes. Why can't? I'm sorry. We've been on a press. Talkies? We were on a. The Takis ones? I've been up since 5 a.m. Takis. Takis. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're really good. I will hurt myself on a Takis. I will also hurt myself on, are we adding pretzels into the mix? I'll take it. I'll accept it. A Pennsylvania Dutch. Oh, that's another good one.

18:35Courtney McBroom:Really will get me. You guys have high bar of, you have like. We're snackers. You guys are legit snackers, but also like quality snackers. And we are explorers, I'd say. We're snackers and explorers. But are you like crappy snackers? Like what's your crappy snack? Like gas station snack. What's your go-to? Chili cheese Fritos. I guess that is pretty close. Also, if a gas station has a hot dog, I'll eat one.

18:58Brie Larson:Of course I'm eating a gas station hot dog, and I'm putting chips on it.

19:01Courtney McBroom:Oh, wow. Chips on a hot dog is important. It's so good. I love crunchy in my sandwich. Chips on a gas station hot dog. What did you just say? Can you say that again? Can we run that back? Cut that. Cut that. She just said, I love chips on a hot dog. She said, I love chips on a sandwich. Chips on a hot dog is important. It's so good.

19:22Brie Larson:I love some chicken sandwich.

19:24Courtney McBroom:Yeah. Did you just say that a hot dog is this using a hot dog is a sandwich ring? No, it's not. Wait, are we debating this?

19:33Brie Larson:It's its own thing. It's its own thing. I'm sorry. I've just been like complete. I need to be re-educated. I've been around somebody pushing opinions on me for a long time. We just really

19:43Courtney McBroom:had a moment, an important moment. Can we play it? Don't tell anybody it's a huge fight. Like on the deal where she says that hot uh yes we're talking clearly talking about hot dogs and she said i would love a chip

19:54Brie Larson:on my sandwich i lost god for a minute but don't worry i'm back i am in my face this is hot dog is

20:00Courtney McBroom:his own thing hot dog is not a sandwich i will i unfortunately have to side with brie on this one however we do have it on tape so if you need blackmail for future or anything it's like the

20:10Brie Larson:scariest part about being under pressure is how much is recorded how much is recorded well that's

20:15Courtney McBroom:not something you want getting out. I just want you to know.

20:18Brie Larson:No, I'm ashamed. I'm embarrassed. Please. I'm looking to my publicist to say, you'll never work in this town again. Don't you scratch this from the record.

20:25Courtney McBroom:It's very important. This is a day that I will never forget. I really love it. I love it. I was here to witness it, to be honest. Although I do have to say, bold choice. Hot dog from a gas station with chips on it and then getting back in the car is really, that is a bold choice. I just don't think,

20:43Brie Larson:I think maybe what you're going to learn in this interview is that we are gutter rats. I just love it. And I just need you to, we need you to just highlight that. I gotta be honest. Whatever you thought we were, we are not that. Well, my last guest was. I mean, we like fine dining as well.

20:59Courtney McBroom:But really deep down, we like the high, we're very high-low. Mostly low. I love that. That's what we all are, right? I feel like that's what we are as eaters, right? Some days you want filet mignon and some days you want. Taco Bell. Taco Bell.

21:12Brie Larson:Most days you want Taco Bell.

21:14Courtney McBroom:100 % or some days you want to follow up your filet mignon with a little late night Taco Bell.

21:19Brie Larson:Listen, we were throwing so many parties promoting this book that we felt like we needed to go on a cleanse. And we checked ourselves into like a boot camp place. That was a week long cleanse place. It was vegan food. Oh, my gosh. And we I am so sorry. I won't even say the name of the cleanse place we went to because I don't want to shame them. But we literally drove away and drove directly into a Taco Bell.

21:41Courtney McBroom:That's the best story I ever heard.

21:42Brie Larson:What were you eating?

21:43Courtney McBroom:What did you have to eat the whole week?

21:45Brie Larson:Like a handful of nuts and a prayer. It was infuriating.

21:50Courtney McBroom:Literally. We were so angry. We were both so angry. We were so hangry.

21:54Brie Larson:And I should have thought to bring snacks we could have hidden in our room. It was that kind of thing. And I was like, oh, oh, oh. Oh, my gosh. Sorry, we're just eating kelp noodles. Like, what the heck is happening here?

22:05Courtney McBroom:One day we were like, we're so hungry. Can we have extras? And they were like, no.

22:09Brie Larson:They were like, oh, no. They said, oh, we've got an extra bag of nuts. and and i felt so angry like i was so bad and i like what important room i was like i don't want

22:19Courtney McBroom:these not oh my gosh could you imagine being the poor staff that works there and the violent outburst they must have to deal with all the time no actually we the more most infuriating thing was that it seemed like we were the only ones who were mad everyone else was like this is great isn't it's the best we're having the best time isn't the food wonderful struggling and we and like really We kept looking at each other. You're like, have you seen our new cookbook? This is crazy. But also, I don't know if you were, Courtney, if you were catching Bree, like organizing her, organizing the confetti in her hand.

22:50Courtney McBroom:She had like a little pile of bread in her hand. And look what I did with it. I love it. See, this is the difference. And hashed it into nothing. I'm just like, mm-hmm. It's so good. I do appreciate it. I have been looking at the floor going, oh boy. All right, we got to get this going. But I feel like now we need to throw a clean up the confetti party. Yeah. I feel like we'll do that. I love a cleanup party. All right, we're going to do snack superlatives. We like to end everything with a rapid fire game. So you guys have to each give your answer on these snack superlatives. Similar to yearbooks.

23:21Courtney McBroom:Did either one of you win a yearbook superlative? I was homeschooled, so I won everything. You won everything. I did. You were the most likely to succeed at your school. You know what I mean? At least likely. It wasn't a superlative. It was like most likely to. And you want to know what mine was? Yes. Best hair. Most likely to get married the most times. Stop. Yeah, isn't that weird? I've never been married. And so jokes on all y 'all back home. You guys. I haven't even been married once.

23:46Brie Larson:I think. Do you think maybe that superlative stopped you from because you were like, I will not. You're like, I can't possibly. Thanks.

23:53Courtney McBroom:Yeah. That is hilarious. All right. Well, that's not any of the ones that I've got here. OK. Snack most likely to ruin your appetite, but totally worth it. Case. Talkies.

24:03Brie Larson:Oh, too much spice. I will harm myself with the too much spice or like a hot Cheeto.

24:07Courtney McBroom:The spicy to me, not until I got older did I realize how much it was really ruining my stomach.

24:13Brie Larson:I'm talking like three days ruined after eating a bag. And also will do often.

24:20Courtney McBroom:It is worth it though. Queso is another great one, but that's like a meal. That eats like a meal. Once I start, I can't stop. And then I'm like, I can't eat anything else, but I'm 100 % okay with that. The most devastating thing I ever saw on social media was the guy who showed us that like tortilla chips are basically just tortilla shells cut into quarters. And then when you realize how many entire tortillas you've eaten. You're eating. I can't. I'm so mad at that man for doing that to me. It's true. Okay. The Captain Marvel of snacks.

24:50Brie Larson:You know, I keep getting asked about superhero foods. I know. It's so annoying. Superheroes don't eat. What's the main character energy snack? No, but they don't eat.

24:56Courtney McBroom:I know.

24:56Brie Larson:I'd say superhero is like a monster energy drink. you know yeah and like a in a hope and a prayer like you know what i mean like yeah i get it really hard for me to think about superheroes eating like i keep getting asked that and i'm like what no but we came up with one didn't know the closest thing i could think of is if i was making something that was like an ode to a superhero i'd probably just go with like the color palette like a trifle was something i thought of that's kind of like got layers and like is like fresh and bold but also like smooth and you know and we have the colors maybe I put some like gold flakes on top or something you know that's the closest I can get to but like I would love for anybody for the people of this planet who have watched anything in the MCU to like point me in the direction of a superhero who's eaten anything

25:47Courtney McBroom:no superheroes don't eat or go to the bathroom I mean it's the thing we've decided they hardly ever sit down

25:52Brie Larson:trust me no I can't they're always you are the official authority always moving they're standing hands on hips or they are walking flying that is so true I have never laid eyes on eating it's a lot of walk and talk it's a lot of fly and talk I get it it's a lot of on wires and talk

26:08Courtney McBroom:I think the question was more like what is the snack that has that main character energy and I was kind of thinking like Takis but what if Takis was the answer to every single Takis when I go back down to it

26:19Brie Larson:it's like Fiery

26:20Courtney McBroom:Takis are fiery like Captain Marvel was

26:23Brie Larson:I could see if Captain Marvel was a chip like a cool ranch oh It's again kind of a color palette thing in like America.

26:30Courtney McBroom:I like it. I like it. All right. I'm going to make you answer that one because it's funny. She wouldn't even not answer that. That best represents your friendship. Well, queso. Yeah. Probably. Are you guys similar? Are you different? We're very similar in a lot of ways, which is I think why our tastes are very much aligned. We're obviously different people and humans and different. But like. Are we though?

26:53Brie Larson:I'm starting to wonder. Now that you say that out loud. I'm like, well, we haven't considered if we are the same.

26:59Courtney McBroom:Okay, here's what I'll say. Our tastes are very similar. We're very much aligned, which is why it was so easy for us to make this book. Another reason why it was so easy for us to make this book is because where we do differ, it's in very complementary ways. So, like, we, like, fill in the, we fill in each other's gaps, if that makes sense. Like, what she's good at, really good at, maybe I'm not as good at, and vice versa. And then we can certainly agree that, like, there definitely needs to be a hot dog party in the book. Yes. You know what I mean? so I feel like queso and chips two things you can't have alone they go together

27:30Brie Larson:or I would say if you consider this a snack a hot dog yeah

27:34Courtney McBroom:is a hot dog a snack yes I think it could be yeah I had a hot dog for a snack before dinner just two nights ago Nancy did too yeah a little hot dog snack a hot dog is the kind of thing that you don't realize how amazing they are until you eat it again well we know very well you guys eat them often

27:50Brie Larson:oh yeah we have a hot dog festival Courtney's the president of the Hot Dog Appreciation Club. Wait, what's the Hot Dog Festival?

27:57Courtney McBroom:CEO and founder. What's the Hot Dog Festival? It's our yearly festival that we throw for our friends and family and anyone who appreciates hot dogs. And you bring all different kinds of hot dogs? Oh, yeah.

28:10Brie Larson:We've got now at this point, because it's basically the most famous thing we've ever done. I mean, now this cookbook is hopefully more famous than our Hot Dog Festival, but we'll find out. But yeah, no, we have sponsors. We get free booze and buns and hot dogs. Yes, because people like every year see it and they're like, what the heck is this party? My stepdad dress is a hot dog. We do hot dog trivia.

28:31Courtney McBroom:Of course, yeah, we'll show you.

28:32Brie Larson:We posted a video of this last year. That is amazing. Next year will be the fifth year, which we feel like we have to like elevate outside of my parents' backyard and maybe get like a venue and invite more people.

28:42Courtney McBroom:I love that. Oh my gosh, I did not know. Hot dog is a snack. Snack that you'll most likely have to share with each other.

28:49Brie Larson:French fries?

28:50Courtney McBroom:French fries, yeah. Or also queso. I mean, I feel like they have a caseo and takis.

28:56Brie Larson:Well, yeah, we shared it. I would say fries, for sure. I'd say french fries.

29:00Courtney McBroom:Yeah, it's good. French fries is the kind of thing I never like to order, but they taste better off of someone else's plate. That's how I feel.

29:07Brie Larson:Yeah, and one of our friends, Jocelyn Novak, who's a brilliant mind and stand-up comedian, has a whole bit about how she will not share her fries with anybody because she's like, you can't take this away from me. I was brave enough to do what you couldn't do.

29:21Courtney McBroom:That's exactly it.

29:21Brie Larson:And that's what it is. That's it. No. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You have to be brave.

29:25Courtney McBroom:That's your punishment. Yeah. A hundred percent. Oh, shit. She just saw it right through me. Okay. And then the snack you're most likely to take home from crafty.

29:34Brie Larson:What do I take home from crafty? I eat a lot of beef jerky.

29:39Courtney McBroom:Oh. Oh, serious concern. No, no, no. I think it's great. I have two teenage boys, so we have a lot of beef jerky in our house. Yeah.

29:48Brie Larson:I eat a lot of beef jerky when I'm at work because it's like, yeah, it's a much better sustaining snack like nuts and jerky. I feel like for some reason on set, I end up like snacking more because you don't have a full stomach. But it also doesn't feel good. Yeah. Not eat all day, of course. So I end up eating like lots of snacks, like protein snacks, because you're also like using your brain in a very intense way that you don't even realize that you're doing. It's a lot of things that you're negotiating when you're on a movie set.

30:21Courtney McBroom:Well, I'm also sure time goes by very quickly there, too. So if you don't eat when you have the chance, it's probably a real issue.

30:28Brie Larson:Yeah, depending on what it is you're doing. Yeah, for sure. So I do eat a lot of jerky, and I found that it was the thing that I really had to think about because I just got here to New York from London a couple days ago, and I'm pretty sure you can't take that through customs. and so I had to check every pocket of my backpack because I was like, I'm going to go to jail because I have jerky and salami sticks stuck everywhere.

30:51Courtney McBroom:But also snacks you can take on the plane. I do feel like what can you take through customs or through the airport and TSA? There's probably a very short list of things. I'm actually not even sure if you can.

31:03Brie Larson:I'm confused on whether or not you can take cured meats through. Do you know? Well, here's a horror story of somebody who took a salami through and never was able to come to America again.

31:14Courtney McBroom:I don't think you can take that type of stuff through international borders, but I will tell you this. So I come from Texas, and every year my dad buys a cow and gets it butchered, and then we'll just keep the meat in a big freezer like a cow from the local ranch. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And the beef is delicious. And one year I was flying back to New York, and he was like, I have all this ground beef. Do you want some? And I was like, sure. and I had like 10 pounds of frozen ground beef in my suitcase. Oh my gosh. In like ice packs. They let me through. Did they check it or anything? You checked the bag.

31:53Courtney McBroom:No, I carried it on. And they weren't like digging into the meat? I'm shocked. When year was this, they didn't even stop me. They didn't even stop you? Stop this woman. I know, I was going to say like suddenly now all things are getting hidden in ground meat after this podcast. I don't want to give anyone any ideas. No ideas. But it seemed fine. That's wild. Yeah, it was like 2008. How did it get home? Did it make it home okay? Yeah, it was still frozen.

32:20Brie Larson:It was just still within America, so it's fine. Yeah, it was like a three-hour flight. Meat and cheese crossing borders, I think, is a real issue. Exactly. That's it. I think you really can't do it. I think there's certain places where it's less of a thing.

32:32Courtney McBroom:But I don't think of beef jerky the same way I would think of a cured salami from Italy or something.

32:37Brie Larson:But like as somebody who there's so many parts of my life, you know, like I keep saying, like, I don't like Thanksgiving. I'm such an outspoken person. And also I am the deepest rule follower of them all. And like I am deeply afraid of doing something wrong with the airport. Like specifically the airport. I am like.

32:55Courtney McBroom:There's something really embarrassing about getting in trouble at the airport. I won't do it.

33:00Brie Larson:Like the airport is like my second home. Like I'm not making this an uncomfortable place for me there. I can't. I can't bear that.

33:06Courtney McBroom:Well, and you also don't know how long it's going to set you back if you do make a mistake. They're going to be like, come with me.

33:11Brie Larson:So I just am like, is there any beef jerky? Leave it.

33:15Courtney McBroom:Also, the airport to me is sort of like the no man's land of food. I feel like what I eat at an airport is like I eat nowhere else.

33:26Brie Larson:Courtney and I have eaten at an airport. We should, you know, that's a whole. That's your next book. We'll come back on another podcast. That's your next book. Another episode and tell you about. What happens at the airport is kind of like the wallaby darned cocktail from the Outback Steakhouse. The Wallaby Darned, for example.

33:45Courtney McBroom:It's actually pretty good. It's really good. Well, I mean, of course it's good. It's from the Outback. Yeah, it was good. Well, on that note, you're going to end up with about one million bottles of Wallaby Darned being shipped to your house. Happily. Outback Steakhouse. Call us. Call them. Okay, well now I'm officially inspired to throw a big party. Make sure you check out Brie and Courtney's amazing book, Party People, wherever you buy your books.
