2:14Hey, everybody. Welcome back to an emergency episode of Snarkbait. I'm Christy. I'm Sophie. And this is an emergency press conference, you guys. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey, Akilah Trav, as we all know by now are engaged to be married. And I am so curious to pick Christy's thoughts. Our group chat was blowing up all day. And I feel like Christy, uh, she was like the secretary of state today. She was fielding calls. There were so many international implications. It was impossible to get in touch with her all day today. We're recording Tuesday, August 26. So I need Christy's thoughts right now.

2:54This is going going to be my first time hearing Christy's real unfiltered thoughts as a true diehard Swifty. Christy. Yes. The floor is yours. Do I have the floor? Okay. Fabulous. Interestingly enough, I was at work and I just popped open my phone and literally one minute ago, I saw that Killich Rav and Taylor Swift announced their engagement. And I was so fortunate to be so early to the announcement. Immediately, I sent it to several group chats. Of course, Snarkbait being, I think, the first. And Olivia was screaming. Everyone was freaking out. I think I might have been the first to deliver it to all of you girls.

3:28Yep, you were. And my jaw literally dropped. I found myself getting honestly emotional. And we're going to get into why, of course, in this episode and why this parasocially does mean a lot to me. But I think honestly, I was pretty shocked, but not shocked, but really actually taking a step back. Not surprised. I don't know if that's an oxymoron, but like, I don't know. as I thought about it, and Shannon of Fluently Forward and I have been talking about this, and she made this theory and she said it on a TikTok of hers. Shout out to Shannon. But she said, you know, I feel like Taylor would have never done Killitra has a new heights podcast if they were not engaged, like they have to be officially engaged or already married.

4:11She speculated. And I think that there's certainly the fact that Taylor Swift has never publicly really been shown with many of her boyfriends i think she might have at one point shouted out one of her boyfriends at like an award uh ceremony but she's never been so public with anyone i don't think she's even so much as walked a red carpet with anyone let alone one showed up on a podcast with her boyfriend and to release life of a showgirl her new album on his podcast like it It all just felt so unprecedented. And that's why I really believe Shannon's theory when she's like, dude, they're already engaged.

4:49What did you think? Have you heard that theory as well before, Soph? I had not heard that theory. I know that after the podcast episode dropped and we talked about this, we were like, they have to be endgame if she went on his show to announce her album. Like we were like, OK, this is like more serious than we even thought. We knew it was serious. but I totally agree with you about being shocked, but also not surprised at the same time. Like, it's like, oh, of course, of course they're engaged. But at the same time when it happened, we were like, oh my God, holy fuck. Taylor Swift is engaged. Like, it's just like, oh, the biggest news.

5:27I was like, guys, if there's ever a time to do an emergency episode, because we were like, okay, we both had really busy day-to-days days today. We were like, okay, like when are we going to have time to hop on the mic? Because if there's ever a time, like this is the biggest news in pop culture of the easily the month, probably the year, maybe even the decade. No, 100 percent. I think certainly the decade is very fair to say. And I want to get into the photographs that were released. There was only, I think, four, but it gave us enough to talk about. So I want to hand it over to you because you know so much more about rings because you're a married woman.

6:04but walk us through the ring and your thoughts on if it's like, do you like it? And then I'll give mine. It's not personally my style. It's a gorgeous ring. Gorgeous. So, okay. It basically is, I had to look up what an old mine brilliant cut ring is. I was like an old mine. Like, does that mean like a blood diamond? I didn't know what that meant. So I Googled it. An old and 19th centuries that is characterized by its soft cushion-like shape, high crown, small table, large coulette, and large chunky facets. Again, this is like diamond speak. I don't, I don't, this is very inside baseball that goes far beyond my knowledge, but this is interesting.

6:49Unlike modern machine cut diamonds, old mine cuts have an imperfect organic appearance due to their manual creation, which was intended to create a warm romantic sparkle that was best seen in low light conditions like candlelight. And I actually noticed that her ring in the pictures, it photographed very warm. Um, it had kind of like a yellow undertone to it. Uh, and it has like a vintage gold setting. I feel like I would like to like get an even closer. I love how they posted the closeup. Cause obviously we all want to see the closeup. Of course I need to see the setting even more. I'm like, what is the setting?

7:25Like I couldn't, like, it's obviously very, um, it's very vintage inspired. Yes. And it's not personally my style. I think that a lot of what Taylor Swift wears is not my style and I'm interested to see her dress. Uh, but it's a beautiful ring. Apparently it's designed by the jewelry designer, Kendrick, Kindred Lubeck of the brand artifacts, fine jewelry. And it was co-designed by Travis, according to People Magazine. Wow. Not, so everyone was like, this was all Taylor. According to this article, at least, they were saying that Taylor was not involved and it was designed by Travis. Interesting.

8:08So I don't know how much I believe that, but either way, it seems very her. And it's estimated, I saw initial estimates at around$550 ,000. This article speculated that this Hollywood jewelry designer, George Khalifa, who was interviewed for People Magazine about the ring, speculated that it's between$3.5 and$5 million, which is way above$550K, obviously. Right. However, another jewelry designer estimates it as even as low as$125 ,000, which I feel like is, that's probably too low. So no one knows for sure how much it costs, obviously, but that's a wide ballpark. I think it's safe to say that it's a very expensive ring.

8:54I mean, what do you get one of the wealthiest women on the planet? And fortunately for Travis, he is also super fucking wealthy. So whether it's 500k, 125k or 5 million, it's chump change for, for both of them. But I'm so curious if they, I mean, when people get engaged, you talk about the setting that you want, the cut that you want, like these conversations are had. So I'm curious. It just, I don't know. I didn't see Taylor with this ring, but I also don't know what other ring I would have seen her with. I think it makes so much sense for her. Like it's like the old fashioned vintage inspired.

9:30I could not see her with, picture her with like fricking, like Danielle Bernstein's ring. Like Hayley Bieber's ring. Hayley Bieber's ring. Like Pace Around's ring. No. But I think what's also interesting is that she had a very prominent watch on in her engagement photos. and it is a Cartier Santos Demoiselle. I cannot, I'm going to watch this. D-E-M-O-I-S-E-L-L-E. A Cartier Santos Demoiselle, a discontinued watch actually, and it looks like it is diamond encrusted also. And she's wearing Louis Vuitton shoes and also a striped dress by Polo Ralph Lauren. yeah like that is what our American royalty would be wearing Ralph Lauren I would expect nothing less of course I went on the Ralph Lauren website and found the dress for 398 dollars it retails for so it's high low you know and that's just our girl oh it's definitely sold out by now right oh 100 % like the website was spinning oh my god that's so funny wait what did you okay so you said when you first saw the ring you were like I don't know what I would have expected I don't know know if this feels like her but like what are your thoughts on it I definitely thought she was going to go vintage so with that respect it makes so much sense um not that any of the listeners know my sister but my sister is very much I feel like her and Taylor are kind of the same like old souls and Audrey has like a very like she has a vintage ring and I feel like that makes sense for their prototype um it's lovely I mean it's ginormous and I feel like when it comes to rings I would want something a little bit more subtle.

11:18But for her, a multi-billionaire, it makes sense. I also want to talk about the place where they got engaged. Again, listening to Fluently Forward before recording this episode, she said that people were speculating that this rose garden that all the photos were taken was her Nashville home, which I don't know if that's correct, but it does make sense that they would want to do it in some place like very sacred and private. That is her home. Okay. So I had seen speculation. I think that totally makes sense. That makes more sense than what I had heard. What were you, what did you hear? I mean, both the theory is, you know, up for debate.

11:59I had heard that Donna Kelsey, who, by the way, going to be on the next season of the traders, Donna Kelsey had posted from the Biltmore estate, which is in Asheville, North Carolina. And so people speculated that this was actually at the Biltmore estate in Asheville, which I don't know what Asheville even means to them. I don't know how accurate this is. If it was just Donna going on a vacation, like she's allowed to take a vacation without it involving Taylor Swift. Uh, so I don't know, this is pure speculation. That is just what I had like seen on the internet, I think it makes way more sense for them to get engaged like at their home.

12:40Right. It just seems very Taylor coded. Do you think that Travis asked Austin Swift, Taylor's brother and Scott, her father for her hand in marriage? I feel like you tell me, Christy, I feel like, you know, the inner workings of the Swift family dynamic better than I do. But I would say yes, that they're traditional like that. Yes, I think he certainly asked for her hand in marriage. And through listening to the New Heights podcast, it seems like Taylor's family is incredibly close to Travis's family. They didn't speak too much about Taylor's dynamic with Travis's family on the podcast. But it's very clear because Taylor, I mean, not only is it her family, they work for her.

13:24Austin Swift is on payroll. Austin Swift and her mother were the reasons why she ended up regaining her master's. they were the ones that had a meeting with Shamrock. No one else on her team because she was so personal to her that she's like, my family needs to be there to represent me. No one else. So I think it completely makes sense that he would ask for her hand. That makes sense. Oh, also one detail about the ring that I forgot to mention, I think, is that it looks to be 7 to 10 carats and it's an elongated cushion cut. So again, if that helps us estimate the price, 7 to 10 carats, that's a lot.

13:57So anyway, just let us know in the comments, how much do you guesstimate it was price wise? And I seriously, I might be a married woman. I am not an expert when it comes to diamonds. I feel like a lot of you baby snarks are probably more knowledgeable than I am. So let us know. We're not diamond appraisers over here. So I'm curious what you guys think. What do you think her dress will look like? What do you see? Again, you being very involved in wedding dress shopping. What do you see Taylor in? I honestly don't know the answer to this question because I'm so out of the loop when it comes to weddings.

14:29I was talking to my mom about this today, actually, because my mom's in town. And I said that I picture her in a princess, a very like classic princess ball gown. I would say probably strapless. I feel like she likes her shoulders and arms as she should. She has great shoulders and arms. And she would look she would look good in anything. Like, let's be real. I just think that her style. I picture her in something very classic with like a princess ball gown, but like not, I'm not talking lace or like any intricate details. I think that she will do something really classic with obviously a red lip cat eye, uh, hair, hair down.

15:12I would say that's my estimate. What about you? I imagine her with a wedding dress, like a, a princess type of like froofy as well. She talks, I think if you guys are familiar with her discography, Speak Now, where she's in like that purple enchanting dress. Like I'd imagine like that kind of dress almost. Oh, so like kind of like isn't the enchanted dress like there's like sparkles and stuff. Yeah. Like I don't know. She just is very much so much for music is a nod to like fairy tales. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Saving her. And I could be speaking to 2011 Taylor Swift. if this may not be 2025 Taylor, but what we know about all of her music videos from the Speak Now era, I just feel like I'm going to see her in this like poofy dress.

16:01Yeah, honestly, I definitely think it's going to be poofy. Like I think that that is objectively going to be the case. But wait, can we talk about the caption really fast? What did you think of the caption? Everyone is saying that it's such a millennial caption. And I have to know, I don't agree or disagree. Like I sure, Like it's a millennial caption. How long did it take for them to come up with that? And who came up with that? Because I feel it was Taylor because she's the she's the writer. And she was like, wait a minute. So high school, my song, gym teacher, English teacher. Let's go. And I mean, Travis was like, whatever.

16:35That sounds cool. Yeah. You know what I mean? Travis was like, he just speaks in grunts. He's like, huh? That was him being like, yeah, that's fine. um but the dynamite emoji did you see this yeah tnt oh yes yes yes yes yes yes see she's so fucking clever she's always on it i love the people also like on twitter are like already starting to be like oh my god this easter egg i'm like oh my god is even her engagement shoot an easter egg or her caption in Easter egg? 100%. 100%. She cannot, she's spoken multiple times of how she totally leans into the Easter eggs because one, it's fun for her, but she knows how fun it is for the fans.

17:26And absolutely, I have no doubt that this is somewhat of an Easter egg. You were like, you were like, oh, absolutely. Absolutely. You're ready to get to work. Christy is ready to get to work. Yeah, this is what she does best and she knows that her fans anything she does every move she makes i mean even things that she would say about travis in that podcast episode people were saying that's an easter egg that's an easter egg and so many times fans were proven to be correct so i have no doubt that the fans are on to something um today where do you think they're gonna have their wedding because she has so many homes right nashville la new york rhode island allegedly she bought a place in like upstate New York to be by Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, which, oh my God, I have to call it out.

18:13Blake Lively. People were saying Blake Lively. Isn't it her birthday today? Let me look. August 25th. Okay. Her birthday was yesterday, son. Yes, right. Yes, right. Excuse me. Monday, August 25th. We were recording this on the day they got engaged. Tuesday, August 26th. But people were like, hmm. Wonder if that was intentional. I know because that would be like kind of shady. I'm interested to see will Blake be invited? Will Blake be a bridesmaid? Uh, the bridesmaid thing is going to be a whole thing, I'm sure. Uh, but in terms of location, I don't know if like, so when you were listing off all the places where she has homes, like Rhode Island, obviously it was like, well, yes, like that's like a, a wedding destination.

18:57Lots. I actually have a wedding in Rhode Island, uh, this fall. And I know that like, it's like a very popular, you know, like where Olivia Colpo got married, a gorgeous ocean side. So I could definitely picture that, but I think she might have sold that house too. I could be incorrect, but in any case, she did have a, yeah, she did have a home there. I do think that I'm, I, okay. So I would like your opinion on this. Do you think that they are going to go the traditional wedding route with like a big venue and vendors, because the thing is the more vendors they have and the more outside people they let in, the more likely there will be leaks and they won't be able to not like control the narrative, but like you don't want, like when you're that famous, the most famous person in the entire world, I feel like you have to be very careful.

19:56Obviously, if they do have vendors and stuff, everyone will sign an NDA. But I could also see them having a very like, literally just at one of Taylor's properties. Yeah. And I did look it up. She did sell the Rhode Island home. So in any case, yeah, but I, the thing is, I feel like if it were her and Joe, RIP, it would have been obviously very private. And there was, there was so much speculation during the pandemic years, like 2021 one to 2023 that they in fact did have some kind of ceremony to demois yeah demois was like convinced and other journalists were saying yeah i've heard that same you know that same rumor and people have said it was confirmed regardless if they did in fact have this ceremony it was as private as it could be and i think when it comes to travis just given the nature of how she's been behaving over the last couple of years with him everything is public and i feel like travis is just really fucking public and i think even if it weren't obviously taylor's gonna have a say but i think she's going to lean towards uh travis's desires and like okay if he really wants a big wedding like i'm in for it because i love him so much so i want to say they're probably gonna have a big wedding because travis wants it um yeah but can you imagine the fucking security and like how downplayed they have to do it before because i feel like they wouldn't no one would be able to have there will be no privacy that day.

21:22It would just be helicopters and everything. No, I know. So that's that's the thing. It's like the more people that are involved in the planning of it, the more opportunities there are to leak the location, leak the date. And with her rabid fan base, like you just have to be so fucking careful with all of that stuff. So but I think you're right. I think they're going to go the traditional big wedding route. I think that Travis has a lot of Chiefs teammates he's going to want to invite. I think he's going to want the big party. So, yeah, I definitely think that. But again, it's kind of like, what are they going to do about like a potential leak?

22:01Because like no one has a fan base like that. No. And the thing about the Swifties is they decode everything. Yeah. So come hell or high water, they will find a way to figure out the destination, the time, how they can smuggle themselves in. Like they're fucking nuts. Yeah. it's gonna be like a life or death like NDA it's gonna be like something so airtight something like that will make them fear for their lives if they release any information no I completely agree but I feel like with her team they'll make sure to yeah to keep it our time do you think tree is gonna be um planning it dude I feel like she's I was gonna say Mindy Weiss but I was like no fucking way never mind because she's so connected to the Kardashians um I'm sure Taylor has a badass party planner she just doesn't she never like talks about her team like her glam her stylist she's and if she has it's just it's not as common all just you know Kim Kardashian's Chris Appleton yeah and I think also like even like her jewelry designer was like a small like independent.

23:05It's not like one of the big name. Kyle Chan designs. Lorraine Schwartz, Kyle Chan designs. Like it's not one of those like household names. So I could see her definitely, you know, finding under the radar vendors for sure. Yeah, I agreed. And I just, can you tell me? Oh, sorry, sorry. Go ahead. No, no, no. Go ahead. Go ahead. I was just going to say, can you tell me why exactly you? Because I was like, obviously, along with the rest of the world, just being like, yay, love, like thrilled. But you were like emotional today. Like, tell me why, what about Taylor Swift getting engaged made you so emotional?

23:42Yeah, so I wrote a couple things down because I feel like otherwise I'll just be really scattered. But I think I have followed Taylor like so many millennials since her debut album. I remember listening to Teardrops on my guitar in like 2008. I remember going to football games with the cheer squad and we will be blasting Taylor Swift on like the fucking boom box. She has just meant so much to me and her music and particularly her lyrics. And admittedly, I know like a lot of the podcast girls that I associate myself with, like they're really into the gossip of Taylor Swift. And I like to kind of, you know, dabble in it.

24:20But I certainly don't know as much as like, say, Shannon. I think I really just connect so much with her lyrics. And I don't really care so much about the gossip. I know there's a lot of theories about like Gaylor Swift and things like that. I just not that I don't necessarily believe it. I just don't know enough to make an opinion about it. But I think that when it comes down to her, we've seen her go through so many different relationships. Like in the early 2010s, right? She was with Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, never forget Jared John. And there was a period of time when the whole world, I mean, she's had many periods of times where the whole world has hated her.

24:56but I think in the early 2010s when she was dating the Joe Jonas's it seemed like everyone just hated her for loving men or wearing her heart on her sleeve and she was deemed this not even like harlot it was more so you're so fucking annoying you're obsessed about boys and so she basically said well fuck everyone like I'm just going to hide away I mean she kind of did it was a little thirsty with the Tom Hiddleston less Calvin Harris but I think after the Tom Hiddleston Calvin Harris era she was like I'm seriously done I want to be as private as possible and then came the Joe Alwyn relationship and I think she kept that so near and dear to her heart and I think along with that came some of the best music we've ever had which to me and I think you we've talked about this and you've been in agreeance with this is like folklore and evermore are some of the most poignant lyrics it's literally like Shakespeare of our generation would you agree nothing makes you appreciate good bedding more than a hot August night.

And I saw a tweet, actually, that I really resonated with. this person said it's in the weeds on twitter with three e's they said this is the woman who wrote the score to every young woman's love life for the past 18 years by the way like it's so true it's it's literally true it has been I can't believe it's been 18 I guess if she came onto the scene around like 2007 2008 yeah it's been like 18 years it's kind of yeah 18 years that she has been the soundtrack to all like you listen back to these albums and you're like oh my god I thought of this ex-boyfriend when I used to listen to this song like I would daydream about this guy and I would cry about this breakup like she literally is the soundtrack of all of our romances that we've had yes and even like just life too and I think as she's gotten older her albums have ascended through just like heartbreak and more so just about being a human in the world like I was listening to um this is me trying and the lyrics like I literally could get emotional even like repeating the lyrics and I won't do it because I'm just too fragile for it right now but like I can assure you guys Christy literally is like starting to tear up yeah like this is me trying is some of the most like heartbreaking but relatable lyrics I think I've ever listened to um when you have someone who's kind of like been adjacent and parallel in your entire life even though she has no idea who the fuck I am it's like she has written the soundtrack of my life from when I was 15 years old all the way to my 30s right and I think something about that you have this parasocial relationship that is beyond just parasocial that we feel with like people on Love Island or whatever.
