In short

The podcast “Snarkbait” episode discusses Ariana Grande’s public image and “snark,” reframing her frequent appearance/era changes and relationship controversies through a lens of trauma and early industry experiences. It also covers a timeline of her career and major life events, then moves into her dating history and public backlash.

Guest backgrounds

Sophie and Christy are the hosts. They reference their own pop-culture fandom (Christy has seen Ariana on the Sweetener tour; both discuss Nickelodeon/Disney nostalgia) and their podcast work (including Patreon episodes and research via other celebrity podcasts).

Key claims

Ariana is portrayed as exceptionally talented (vocal range compared to Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston; Oscar-nominated for Wicked). The hosts argue her “iterations” (e.g., “Blackiana,” later appearance shifts) are partly explained by trauma and discomfort with being publicly scrutinized, while still acknowledging that some changes are hard to ignore. They emphasize major traumas: Mac Miller’s overdose death, the Manchester Arena bombing, and alleged hypersexualization/abusive Nickelodeon-era dynamics (Dan Schneider context).

Notable examples

Manchester One Love Manchester benefit ($23M); Ariana’s brain-scan PTSD Instagram post; her Yours Truly debut at #1 on Billboard 200; relationships including Big Sean (Naya Rivera overlap allegation), Mac Miller, Pete Davidson (lollipop photo; “10 inches” comment), and later Dalton Gomez (married 2020–2023; prenup; $1.25M settlement mentioned).

Hey everybody, welcome back to Snarkbait. I'm Sophie. I'm Christy. And it has been two weeks since you and I recorded together.

1:23I know, we're recording on Thursday, July 9th. So even though you guys will hear DET before this, this is our first time recording together in quite some time, which is very exciting. I am excited to be back. I'm feeling relaxed and rested after my little vacay. So, yeah, we're back. How have you been? Oh, my God. I want to hear all about Curacao. We could probably should we talk about it on DET? We can talk about it on DT because you guys will hear that, I guess, first. But yeah, all you need to know, it was a good time. Highly recommend Parasau. It's a beautiful, beautiful island with beautiful, kind people, amazing food.

2:06The weather was great. Got a little bit sunburned. So if you're watching on video, don't judge my peeling skin a little bit on my nose. but and trust me I was good with the sunscreen I was very very very good and I still got got burnt the sun is pretty strong down there so just a warning sometimes you can't avoid it like if you're not wearing a hat usually it's like well it's unrealistic to apply sunscreen every hour I know what that's what I did no but I literally did I literally did and it's so funny because Henry is so pale that like, I'm like, you know what? Like I'm the tan one in our, in our couple, even though I'm the palest person in my family, my entire family is like olive skin, like dark hair.

2:51You, you've met Mandy. Mandy is like olive skin, black hair, brown eyes. I am the pale one in my family, but with Henry, I'm like, I'm the tan one. So watch out, honey. Like I am getting tan this trip. And I was like the first person to burn between the two of us. Um, but yeah, we're back so yeah yeah i'm excited for our topic today but i know i know um me as well it's i know it's really good to be back on the mic you know we thank our lovely team rachel and olivia for stepping in yeah last week i know that was like a difference in programming but we really appreciate you guys giving them all the love and um they're both so amazing so thank you to both of them for covering for both of us while we were out of office.

3:37And yeah, no, I got nothing. So I'm kind of ready to get into the Ariana Grande of it all. Let's jump in. There is so much to say about Ariana. And I am such an Ariana head. I've seen her in concert. I saw her on the Sweetener tour. I just love my girl. I'm curious what your thoughts, top line thoughts are on Ariana. Aren't her fans called Arianaators? You're right. Arianaators. Am I pronouncing that right? You know what? I love Ariana. Like, I feel like she is incredibly, I wouldn't call myself an arianator, but I do love her music. I think that she is one of the, you know, vocalists of our generation.

4:15Like, she is just so, so, so talented. She has proven herself to be, I don't know if she's a triple threat because I don't know if she's like that good of a dancer, but she's an amazing actress and singer. And did she get nominated for an Oscar for Wicked? One? uh let's look Ariana Grande Oscar yes yes she was nominated for yeah Oscar nominee she just she kind of does it all she's incredibly talented um and I know that there's been some you know concerning behavior here and there but overall I think you know she has turned out okay given the fact that she was famous so early on in her life. Yeah, it has been very difficult to watch her over the last, I would say, two years since Wicked released.

5:02And I think that we'll get into all of her lore and what we know about her. And frankly, I think out of many celebrity, at least like the girlies of our generation, I should say, the Miley's, the Ariana's, the Demi's. I mean, it's not even good to compare struggles. I just think that publicly she has struggled a lot with a lot of events outside of her control. She's dealt with the traumatic death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, who passed from an overdose. She experienced the Manchester bombings at her concert. She has sustained a lot of trauma for someone of her age. And I think that people often judge her for her iterations of herself.

5:40You know, she was once what people like to say, Blackiana. And now she was, you know, she was Asian fishing back in 2021. And now she's this like transatlantic accent, thin linda. She has, she's worn literally so many hats. And I think that when you kind of understand her story, it kind of makes you wonder, it's not judgmental, it's more just curiosity about the life that she's frankly endured. And I think a lot of what we don't know, she was a Nickelodeon girl. She was with Dan Schneider at a very young age. She was hyper sexualized. I don't think that's subjective to say objectively, she was hyper hyper sexualized at a very young age.

6:17And all of that is for the internet to consume even now in a 2026 lens, where she was a young girl squeezing a potato saying like, oh, I can't get the water out of it. You know, it's just, it's actually very disturbing looking at it. And it kind of makes you wonder, what did she go through behind the camera? Like, what did we not even see that could inform her decision making now as a 33 year old? So I actually have a lot of sympathy for her. I know people snark on her a lot because of her appearance, which will obviously we have to get into when we talk about Ariana, but I want to do so out of respect because I don't think she's necessarily a bad person.

6:52I think sure. A lot of her decisions over the last couple of years have been questionable, a la Ethan Slater and her allegedly breaking up a marriage for a man who just had a child. I get all the criticism, but I try to be gentle when talking about her because you just don't know people's stories and how she's kind of struggled with the trauma. So let's get right into it. She was born June 26, 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida. And I don't know if this is because I watch Real Housewives of New York, but Boca just feels like a very like shee-shee, upper middle class area. And it comes as no surprise because she comes from a very successful family.

7:28What do you know about Boca? You know more about Florida. Yeah, I grew up going to Boca all the time as a child because my grandparents had a condo there. Um, and yeah, it's very, I would say like, it's very Jewish. Like that's where a lot of the East Coast Jews and, um, and I say that as a Jewish person, obviously. Yeah. Um, and what are they called? What's it called? Snowbird. When you're a snowbird, you, you winter in Florida, you migrate down for the winter. So a lot of New Yorkers go down to Boca. It's very like New York East Coast, like you said, you know about it through Roni. So yeah, it's, it's pretty affluent, I would say.

8:06Yeah. In Ariana, I think when we think about Disney or Nickelodeon girls, when I think of Selena or Demi, for instance, they didn't come from upper middle class families. In fact, Selena Gomez grew up very poor. She grew up to like a single, very young mother. And it seemed as if, or like Britney Spears, for instance, when their parents really pushed them into the industry because they were poor and frankly, they needed money. Ariana Grande was nothing of that sort. She didn't come from that quote unquote pedigree. Her mom, Joan Grande, was the Brooklyn-born CEO of Hose McCann Communications. And basically, they were a manufacturer for marine communications equipment.

8:40So for instance, like the PA systems on ferries, her mother developed that. And I find that when you find, when you think about companies that are the least sexy, they often make people the most money because they kind of monopolize on that industry. I have a friend whose husband works in like parking, parking meters. The parking industry. It's like the least sexy industry, but it like prints money. It prints money because how many companies are there that do that? So her mother is no different. And her mom is, you know, CEO. So she's probably likely very analytical, very logical, very type A.

9:12Her dad, Edouard Butera, is a graphic design firm owner in Boca Raton. And I was listening ahead of this episode to an episode on Podcrush, Penn Badgley's podcast. What? Penn Badgley is a podcast? Yes, I know, right? That's a new sentence. You're like Penn Badgley's. Ariana was on Penn Badgley's podcast. What's it called? Pod Crushed. That's the most random thing I've ever heard. It's so random. And it's kind of like the Amy Poehler type podcast where they have all these celebrity guests. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a dime a dozen these days. So I just simply listened to the episode because Ariana, he starred in one of her music videos where she was a cat.

9:54You guys are yelling into the audio. But you know what I'm talking about. he was in one of her music videos so she kind of you know extended the favor and she started his podcast episode and she said that her family they were artistic like on the side like her father yes graphic design firm but it's not like he was in the arts like he did this for his nine to five for his job right mom liked to sing but she wasn't someone who was like lindsey lohan's mother dina lohan who was like a rockette she's like yeah my grandparents like to sing and i have cousins that are they have bands and stuff but no one in my family was in the arts until frankie and i were born.

10:28And Frankie, she kind of followed in his footsteps because he was really into theater and dance and singing. And she looked up to her brother a lot. She's like, it was kind of my brother that brought me into this whole world of the arts because he was my older brother and I looked up to him. Also, fun fact, Frankie Grande, what are your thoughts on Frankie? Or do you even have any thoughts? I really am pretty indifferent towards him. I do think it's weird that he looks so much like Ethan Slater, Spongebob. It's uncanny. Spock Woodsman. Right. It's uncanny. Whatever you want to call him. Yeah. I've seen visuals of people creating on the internet.

11:02They put Frankie Grande's head with like red hair. That's scary. It looks just like Ethan Slater. But I remember hearing rumors back in like 2018 to 2019 when Ariana was like at her peak. Remember like Sweetener, Thank You Next, where Frankie Grande would be at SoulCycle. And if you've ever been to a SoulCycle class, I feel like rest in peace. We did a whole episode on SoulCycle on the Patreon, start to finish about the rise, how they were able to kind of like tap a very niche market, and people were obsessed. It created a true cult-like community. But back in 2018, that's like the height of the workout.

11:36I feel like people, girlies are more into Pilates and low impact workouts, but back then it was everything. If you've ever been to a SoulCycle class, it was very much like therapy. You would go in there, they would dim the lights, they would play this like hard-hitting music. And sorry, there was a fly and I had to capture it. I hate when that happens. Oh my God. Frankie Grande. It's very normal for you to get emotional in those classes, but Frankie Grande would collapse on the floor in tears during SoulCycle classes. I feel like at that point, you just want attention. A hundred percent. He is so extra.

12:07Like, I remember just thinking he loves being Ariana Grande's brother. I mean, who wouldn't, you know? But I would love to be a Nepo sibling. Oh, my God. You don't have to do any of the work. You don't have to get any of the real scrutiny or negative attention the way that your sibling does. But you get to, like, profit off of, like, their private jets and their, like, success. Absolutely. Like Ashton Earl. Oh, my gosh. I know. She is a professional Nepo baby at this point. Yeah. Like, I would love to be a Nepo sibling. I always said that to my sister. I was like, why didn't you and my mom, like, release your sex tape and then I could have, like, been, you know, a Jenner to you?

12:42Oh, my gosh. That would be incredible. Or it could go the other direction where you're Haley Duff and Hilary Duff and you end up being resentful of your sister who's way more successful than. That could happen. I would just be thrilled to have a successful sibling. Absolutely. Yeah, I completely agree. But I also understand living in the shadow of someone else's dream. Exactly. Or you could take the Ashley Simpson route where you become equally, if not more successful than your sister at some point in time. Exactly. So in 2008, Ariana landed her first major professional role in Broadway at the age of 13.

13:15And she talked a lot in Podcrash about her bestie, Elizabeth Gillies, who was two years older than Ariana. Do you know who Elizabeth Gillies is? Am I supposed to know who this person is? No. Let me look her up. Yeah. Ariana kept referring to her, oh, I started working with Elizabeth Gillies and she to this day is still one of my best friends. But they grew up in the industry together. They're still very close, which I think is very sweet. she in 2010 played cat valentine on victorious and that show spanned across three years were you a victorious girl no i watched a ton of nickelodeon shows growing up like i did the whole um oh my god wait hannah montana was disney correct but same generation maybe maybe it's because i was watching disney i was watching hannah montana i was watching um obviously like Lizzie McGuire, even Stevens.

14:04Wizards of Waverly Place. That's all Disney. Wizards of Waverly Place. Yeah. Maybe I wasn't watching Nickelodeon. That's why I didn't watch Victorious. No, me too. I wasn't really a Nickelodeon girl either. I would watch Hey Arnold, and I think that was on Netflix. Oh, I loved Hey Arnold. Oh my God. We need to do a Patreon episode on just nostalgic TV shows. Add it to the list. Yes. Yes. Oh my God. And it like stands the test of time. Yeah, it's a very progressive show and teaching young kids progressive values was, yeah. Also, literally SpongeBob SquarePants. That was on Nickelodeon, right? Yep, you're right.

14:40Yep. You're right. So this is, I thought it was a little bit disturbing. Ariana had to dye her hair red every other week for the role, which ended up damaging her hair. When I think about this, I remember back in 2016, I got the balayage. Oh my God. This was like my, never again. Okay. it completely damaged my hair for years i can't imagine when your hair is still like developing at the age of 13 14 15 and you're dying your hair every other week that's traumatic also why did she why did they make her do that because it looked bad it didn't look good like what was the purpose and it wasn't even like a lindsey lohan red it was like a purple almost yeah and obviously looked and maybe they were going for like that i didn't watch it like she was supposed to be like the edgier friend or something maybe i don't know yeah it just it did not look good and to your point why did that push the plot along again we didn't watch victorias but you guys can will definitely let us know but i think that's just scratching the surface of what we know now about nickelodeon and i think at this point if you're a baby snark you've watched quiet on set which is that documentary that air i think on hulu it talks about all the grievances that folks had against dan schneider whether you were a young young person working on set on a nickelodeon show or you were a producer or an adult working with dan schneider it was an abusive set period and And Ariana, she, what?

15:56All that, the Amanda show. Sorry, I'm just thinking of other Nickelodeon shows. Yeah, there were a lot. Yeah, sorry. This is all that. I love that theme song. Yeah. Keenan and Kel. Keenan and Kel. You like orange soda? Oh my God, Keenan and Kel. Kel loves orange soda. Good. It was amazing. And what I thought was really interesting is, for whatever reason, I just assumed that Ariana was able to become a singer because she kind of created that triple threat just being a Nickelodeon girl, similar to Hilary and Demi and Miley. That actually wasn't the case. So while filming Victorious, Ariana made several recordings of herself singing covers of songs by Adele, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, which I feel like are definitely her predecessors.

16:33Ariana, people may get offended by this, but I feel like she is kind of the Mariah, the Whitney of our dance. She is. Yeah. Well, when you think about like vocal range, like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are obviously known for their range. I don't know, like, the technical terms, you know, the falsetto, the soprano, the octaves, whatever it is. Ariana is the only person alive today that can reach those notes, I would say. I completely agree. As well as they can. It's that whistling voice. Yeah. There is no person of her start class that can mimic her or even be compared to Mariah Carey. And she uploaded her videos of her singing to these artists on YouTube, kind of like Justin Bieber did when he was discovered by Scooter Braun.

17:19And a friend of Monty Lipman, Monty Lipman is a chief executive officer of Republic Records, came across one of her videos and she sent it to the CEO of Republic Records. And that's how she ended up getting a contract with the label. And she kind of dabbled between music and acting in the early beginning of her careers. and she said like yeah acting was fun for me but music to me was always my priority and in the Jeanette McCurdy memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died which released in 2022 which by the way did you really did you read that no I never read it did you no but I feel like that required reading for people like us that are really interested in like that time but apparently there was a lot of juicy tidbits from that memoir and it included an anecdote where Jeanette McCurdy describes a feeling of jealousy watching Ariana and how Ariana was able to miss a lot of Sam and Cat work that was another show on Nickelodeon that she was on because she was pursuing other opportunities like music.

18:11And she also said that there was a big pay disparity between her and Ariana. So Ariana definitely got special treatment. She was kind of like a golden child. I remember listening to, whether it was a podcast or a TV show, where people would say that it was very clear who like the cool kids were when you would walk into like a Disney Channel party. Hilary Duff, all eyes were on her. She was the star. Even though they were all on their own respective shows, Hilary Duff was the GOAT and everyone kind of knew it. I feel like Ariana Grande was kind of the equivalent in the Nickelodeon world. She was the it girl.

18:39Yeah. And I get it because she's so damn talented. So in 2011, that's when she really started to transition into music and become a full fledged star. People think of Ariana Grande as a musician. They don't really think about her as like a Nickelodeon girl. Like she was able to really transcend that stereotype very early on. Like, yeah, she had a lot of good work from her early acting years, but people don't really talk about that, nor do they care. I feel like there were probably some people that are like, are you kidding me? I love Sam and Cat and I love Victorious. But like the normal population is not thinking about her Nickelodeon days.

19:11Yeah, especially because I didn't watch that show. So like I was introduced to Ariana Grande as a musician. Exactly. And I also feel like people watching Sam and Cat and Victorious are not really our age. They're probably a bit younger. Yeah. Yeah. So in 2013, she shifted to she had like a bubblegum pop song called Put Your Hearts Up in 2011. I don't remember that song at all. She came across my desk in 2013 when she shifted to a more mature R &B pop song, pop sound, when she released her debut album called Yours Truly in August of 2013. And that album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and it made her the 15th woman ever to have a debut album reach, number one.

19:49So she was already creating a name for herself on her first track. And the lead singles from that album, The Way, featuring Mac Miller, hit number nine on the Hot 100. And this album is considered multi-platinum certified. I love that song, The Way by Mac Miller. Do you remember that music video too? No. Oh my gosh, it's so sweet. And obviously knowing what we know now about how Mac's story ended, people look at their relationship very fondly, which I completely understand because it just seemed very, it was like young and young puppy love. It just seemed very sweet. After yours truly released in 2013, she followed it up with My Everything, which was released in August 2014.

20:26And that included the hits that we know and love, Problem, Break Free, Love Me Harder, And this sophomore album earned her her first Grammy nomination for Pop Vocal Album. And then 2016, next came Dangerous Woman. And this was, I feel like, what really put her on the map. I feel like this was the cat ears, that like mass era of hers. And she's had so many different eras. But I feel like this is when she really started to make a name for herself. And I was literally Ariana Grande for Halloween. Like five months after this album released, I was Ariana. I wore like the cat ears. and like the black getup, that whole thing.

21:03And this is kind of when I feel like as if she hadn't already sustained what we assume to be trauma from the Nickelodeon years. On May 22nd, 2017, there was a suicide bombing at her Manchester UK concert and that ended up killing 22 people and injured thousands and a lot of them being young girls that were attending this concert. And an extremist motivated by Muslim casualties from the US intervention in the Syrian civil war detonated a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb as people were leaving the arena. So it didn't actually happen inside the venue during her concert. It was subsequent to the concert.

21:36And she suspended the tour, and she returned only two weeks later for a televised benefit, One Love Manchester, in which she raised$23 million for victims. And there were a couple of other artists that were there participating in the event. Liam Gallagher, Robbie Williams, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus. They were all there to support the efforts. And to recognize the efforts, the Manchester City Council named Ariana the first honorary citizen of Manchester, And later in the year, she was reported to have declined an honorary UK damehood. Yeah. So the city really put respect in her name for, yes, we understand this tragedy occurred at your event, but you really did a lot to make lemonade out of lemons if, you know, for the worst horrendous event that could possibly happen, especially to young people, which is horrible.

22:19Yeah, it's awful. And like, obviously, it was incredibly traumatic for her. And I feel like she probably carried a ton of survivor's guilt, I imagine, because those were her fans that were literally only there because of her. Like, I could understand her feeling guilty. Obviously, it's not at all her fault. She should never blame herself. But I can only imagine how traumatic that was for her. Yeah. And I had to look it up. She was only 24 when this happened. So your brain is still developing. You're used to being one of the most famous stars on the planet. And then this tragedy happens. It's not normal for anyone to go through.

22:57And did you ever watch the Ares documentary on Disney Plus that released last year, I think? Yes. I don't remember anything about it, but I remember watching it as like background noise. Yeah. Sorry, Swifties. Because remember when there was that dance class, that Taylor Swift-themed dance class in London? Or excuse me, it wasn't in London. It was somewhere in England. But basically, some young, young girls were killed. This psychopath walked into this dance studio class and he... Yes, I remember. Yeah. ...stabbed these girls. It's horrible. Yeah. And basically, Taylor Swift, before one of her England concerts, she went and interacted and engaged with these families before the concert, which I think is so sweet.

23:34But you can imagine how heavy that was for Taylor and her mother to interact with these families who it's such a delightful experience to get to meet one of the biggest stars on the planet, of course. But circumstances are very dark and heavy. And of course, on the Ares documentary, they didn't end up showing the footage of her meeting with these families, but they showed her leaving the room. And her and her, oh my God, I could literally cry about it right now. I was like sobbing. Her and her mom were clearly just wrecked by that. They just showed footage of her and her mom just sobbing after that.

24:02They didn't say anything. It was just a very deep, heavy moment. And I'd imagine Ariana, that's obviously like the only thing I can compare it to because we watched it on our screens. But that's what I can imagine Ariana felt as well. And I remember in 2018, she shared this Instagram post where there was a story actually. And it was a brain scan of a healthy brain and then a brain that has sustained post-traumatic stress disorder. And Ariana put like a side-by-side of a healthy brain versus her brain. And she's like, guys, dot, dot, dot, my brain, dot, dot, dot, hilarious. and terrifying. And this is why I try and give a little bit of space for Ariana because we like to snark and hate on her changes because they are, at the end of the day, very bizarre and a little bit disturbing, I would say.

24:46But then you look at this, the still of her brain, it's like, how maybe that's the way she handles trauma is through creating different versions of herself, versions that are so distinctly different from one another. And interestingly enough, I was listening to Pod Crush, and she kind of addresses this. And she basically says that the different eras that she was in before the Eternal Sunshine era, which is kind of her era today, she's like, they weren't me. And when you think about a person that has lived through different points in their life, they're not up for debate for the entire world to pick apart or to speculate on.

25:20But she's like, I was never comfortable in these various eras that I displayed to the public. This is the era that I'm comfortable with, and this is me. and I'm now in my 30s and I'm reaching a point where I feel comfortable just being 100 % myself and that wasn't always me. So she continues to push this narrative today that you guys may think it's weird that I was kind of like Blackiana or she didn't exactly say that obviously, but she's like, you think it's weird that I was posing as someone that was very different from who I am today, but that was just me disguising myself from who I really was.

25:52Again, when she says, yeah there's not um photos of everyone to pick apart when you're a normal person but it's like yeah a lot of us aren't disguising with a different accent or looking vastly different so it's like yes i do understand that like obviously the body keeps the score um trauma fundamentally fundamentally changes your physiological makeup your brain at the same time it's like okay but like does that excuse you blackfishing 100 no exactly it's like yes and no What you're saying makes sense, but also the changes are so, so stark that we can't ignore it. So I hear both sides is what I'm saying.

26:35You guys already know we're obsessed with the Lola blankets. And a lot of you have thankfully taken their advice and gotten one for yourselves because they're the best. And if your pets are anything like Baxter and Hank, they probably curl up into your Lola blanket every time you whip it out. It's that soft and cozy. literally Baxter fully takes over both the one on our couch and the one on our bed constantly. He doesn't even pay rent and he gets to enjoy our favorite blankets. It's not right. So when the geniuses behind the little blankets realized pets around the world were stealing their blankets from their parents, they decided it was time to create a full collection for pets.

27:10Now your pet can have the same level of comfort without stealing yours. Not only do they have amazing blankets for your fur baby, they also have incredibly soft pet beds and pads. As soon as we received our little Lola Pet Bed, Baxter crawled right into it and was immediately obsessed. The Lola Pet Bed is designed with that same signature ultra soft faux fur that Lola blankets have, but built specifically for your pet with an orthopedic foam base that supports their joints and helps them rest more comfortably. Plus it's actually cute and stylish unlike other pet beds. And the best part, I can add my Lola blanket to myself again, which if you don't even have a pet and you're listening to this, take this as a sign to finally get the world's softest blanket for yourself.

And if it doesn't, it's not because you have bad taste. It might just be a budget problem. Well, Wayfair fixes that. This is my sixth apartment in 12 years in New York City, which is crazy to think about. So when you move that much, you become less and less enthusiastic about spending money on new pieces.

28:24Of course, I still want my apartment to feel chic and elevated, but knowing it's not my forever home makes it hard to want to splurge. That's why I've turned to Wayfair for home upgrades for over a decade now. I'm obsessed with my latest purchase. It sounds kind of silly, but we were previously throwing our laundry in an open laundry bin that just ended up looking messy and cheap in the corner of our bedroom. It became an absolute eyesore, so I searched for closed wicker laundry bins on Wayfair that can hide the mess and add like a chic beachy touch to our bedroom. And I found the perfect one for under$100.

28:54It seriously was such an upgrade to our bedroom aesthetically and functionally. It's hard to even describe it or put it into words. And it's little purchases like that that can make all the difference in your space. Ready to upgrade your home for way less? Head to Wayfair.com right now to shop all things home and get your space ready for less. That's W-A-Y-F-A-I-R.com. nothing makes you appreciate good bedding more than a hot summer night especially when your air conditioning is broken like ours was recently i don't want to talk about it having something that's lightweight breathable cool and easy to sleep in no matter how hot it gets is so freaking important that's why i love quince it's been my go-to for bedding for so long now with high quality materials like 100 european linen and organic cotton you can literally feel the difference I love waking up not sweaty.

29:44Quince has everything you need to make your bed feel cooler, lighter, and more comfortable for summer. From breathable sheets to linen shams and duvet covers in soft, seasonal colors, relaxed stripes, and timeless neutrals. My absolute favorite is their 100 % organic cotton percale sheets and duvet cover. The material is so crisp and comfy and even has a cooling effect, which is obviously perfect for those hot summer nights. I also love the look of it. It's a soft gray gingham and just has this classic look that instantly elevates our bedroom. And I love knowing that we're sleeping on 100 % cotton and not some cheap polyester blend.

30:16I also love their Mulberry Silk pillowcases and eye masks. They help keep your hair smooth and skin hydrated overnight because they don't absorb your natural oils like other materials do. Quince bedding is made for literal beauty sleep, you guys. And in case you need a reminder, everything at Quince is 50 to 80 % less than similar brands because they work directly with ethical manufacturers and cut out the middleman. 31:24And I think the first instance that we saw of her kind of being a boyfriend stealer was with Big Sean. Do you remember this relationship with Big Sean? Who was he? Naya Rivera. Yes. May she rest in peace. Yes. Oh, my God. That I was actually just I know this is so off topic. I was just watching an interview of her the father of her son, Ryan Dorsey, I think his name is. And he was talking about how they keep her memory alive. And it was like just so. heartbreaking because it's coming up on the sixth anniversary of her death that was so bizarre let's call it what it was that was a very bizarre death it was tragic absolutely tragic she died trying to save her son absolutely and she did save him she died saving her son she did um and she also her body was found on the i believe seventh anniversary of cory montez death and i think there's something to be said about what we could i don't know if it's like a glee curse or you know i i'm not going to call it a glee curse but there are a lot of dark dark dark things surrounding the the glee cast yeah that that i think actually could be a patron episode because the behavior i added that to our patreon list in our notes app yesterday yeah oh amazing we're on the same page yeah it's tragic and it's so sad because she left behind a very young son and i'm glad that he's having the support of Naya's family, who it seems is still very involved, and the fathers, which is amazing.

32:52But Naya Rivera's story back in 2014, she was linked to Ariana. And Naya actually wrote a book, and she hints that the romance between her and Sean definitely had some overlap with Ariana. She says that she found Ariana hanging out with him at his house not long before he had called off their wedding. I had no idea until reading this, our notes and doing research for the show, Naya and Big Sean were engaged to be married. And he called off their engagement in and around the time he was caught hanging out with Ariana. And Naya and Sean called it quits, or excuse me, Big Sean and Ariana called it quits in 2015, talking about scheduling conflicts.

33:35And they released a joint statement that their breakup was amicable. And right after she broke up with Big Sean, she was spotted with her backup dancer, Ricky Alvarez. And if you remember, he was a part of that donut gate in 2015 where she lit that donut and stated that she hated Americans. And it was like one of, I think, her biggest scandals up at that point in her career. And now it seems as if they're dating actually now. So in some of her concerts, you know, and thank you, next, she says, wrote some songs about Ricky. Now I listen and laugh. She has altered the lyrics live. And she says, wrote some songs about Ricky.

34:10Now they still kind of slap. And she, interestingly enough, I just saw a post about her liking every single one of his posts as recently as this week. And they were spotted grocery shopping together. Like, they seem to be out and about and spending time together. So it looks like she boomeranged right back. And she dated Mac Miller between September 2016 to May 2018. They collaborated musically in 2013 for The Way. And they went public in September 2016. and right, let's see, five, four months after they broke up, Mac died of an overdose. And there was a lot of female blaming, honestly, of people saying, wow, like it's Ariana's fault that Mac died.

34:51And that's just like sick trolls on the internet. It's horrible. Scum of the earth. But Ariana did have to respond. And it's misogyny also. It's misogyny. Like, obviously, rest in peace, Mac Miller. I love Mac Miller, one of my favorite artists to this day. I was very upset when he passed, but I feel like we have, you know, Oriana's not the one that cost the overdose, but so many fans at the time were blaming her directly. Like, oh, you couldn't keep him, and he died because he saw all the stuff with you and Pete Davidson. And she had a response saying shaming and blaming a woman for a man's inability to keep his shit together is a very major problem.

35:27I'm not a babysitter or a mother, and no woman should feel like they need to be. I've cared for him and tried to support his sobriety, but shifting and blaming women for a man's inability is a very major problem. Please stop doing that, which I totally get. She's not wrong. And we would be remiss to not bring up the Pete Davidson relationship. And this feels like such a lifetime ago. I feel like the internet was so different. The internet was on fire when this happened. Do you remember that distinct photo of her sucking the lollipop? Yeah, it was such a cultural moment. First of all, because of her fashion, she wore the oversized sweatshirts and the knee-high boots and the ponytail.

36:03And it was like such a look. And then everyone was like, Pete Davidson? I think because, first of all, he was fresh off of a breakup with Kazzy David, where I think there also was maybe a little bit of overlap. And people looked at this Pete Davidson guy because at this point, he was just known for being on SNL. He hadn't dated all the high-profile women that he's dated today. They were like, he's not very conventionally attractive. Ariana Grande is obviously beautiful. What does she see in him. And then I believe it was The Cut posted the article that said, you know, he has that big dick energy.

36:35And that's where the term big dick energy was coined because it was like, oh, like that's probably it. He does have this kind of like big dick energy. And then she obviously confirmed on Twitter that his, what did she say? Like nine inches or something? She says, because someone asked, how long is it? And they were referring to the song and she goes like 10 inches. Oh, I mean, like a little over a minute. So she fed into the rumors and they were spotted everywhere together. And to your point, he was kind of this nobody, this kind of weird looking dude who was just funny. But he had this swag about him and people started to get it.

37:14And it felt honestly, I think this is more talked about in the blind items. I feel as if their relationship was very, this is all alleged, but I feel like their relationship was very filled with drugs. I don't know. I mean, we know at the time that he was an addict. He's talked about that. And yeah, I can totally see that. And for the record, I still don't see the, like, I understand, like, the big dick energy and the swag thing. Like, I get it. But I also, like, don't with Pete Davidson. Like, I still don't fully get it with him. Yeah. And it's pretty crazy how he's been able to sustain this big dick energy persona for, I mean, at this point, we're almost coming up on a decade.

37:53Emrata, Kim Kardashian, Kate Beckinsale. Like some of the most beautiful women in the world. And I think also like once you date one beautiful woman, like other women are like, wait, okay. So like you dated Ariana Grande, Amrata, and Kim Kardashian. Like that's hot. That's attractive. There must be something very like attractive about you, even if you're not attractive. And Kim has even said that that was the reason she even had an interest to begin with him. Because she was like, oh, okay. I kind of got to see what this is all about. She said that on the Kardashians Hulu show. So, yeah, 100%.

38:27Didn't he date Madeline Klein, too? Yeah, for like a long time. Oh, God. Can you believe? Can you imagine? Also, Margaret Quailey. Speaking of Margaret Quailey, the news just came out about her breakup with Jack Antonoff, which I have so many thoughts on. Oh, wait. Were they together? Yeah. Oh, my God. Yes. The list goes on. Oh, my God. It's crazy. I felt as if their relationship was very drug-fueled and very love-bomb-y. Pete got a bunny tattoo on his neck, which obviously is a reference to Dangerous Woman. and Ariana got a tattoo honoring Pete's late father, 8418 on her foot, which is like, I think his firefighter number.

39:03And the comedian, excuse me, Pete shared a photo of Ariana wearing a gold necklace with a pendant of his late father's New York City Fire Department badge. And people were like, whoa, you're giving like memorabilia from your late father to her. It must be pretty serious. And only after a couple of weeks of dating, Pete ended up popping the question with a$93 ,000 pear-shaped engagement ring from celebrity jeweler Greg Yuna. And the couple's engagement was confirmed by people on June 11th. And there was no fireworks, huge spectacle. It wasn't a public, you know, will you marry me? They literally were like hanging out in bed after watching a movie and he proposed with this ring.

39:38And she was so infatuated with him. It was like so lustful, I feel. And just a couple months into dating him, they ended up breaking off their engagement. And this was a month after Mac had passed away. And I think everyone kind of had a feeling, how do you have a normal relationship with someone? She was so fresh from leaving Mac and then jumped into the relationship so quickly with Pete Davidson. And then Mac ended up passing. All this happened with a span of a little less than a year. It's not normal. And I think Pete has even talked about how difficult it was on their relationship. He's like, we couldn't go back.

40:11She was too depressed, which you completely understand. Right. And I was reading some references from Cassie David's book. She released this memoir and she talks about how traumatic it was for her to watch her ex-boyfriend that she was with for years trot around town being a culture. Like you said, it was an iconic moment in time when they were dating. And she says that it was very traumatic for her to watch it all unfold. She said she told me that they were in matching Harry Potter sweatshirts, which is particularly comical apart from being so stereotypically millennial. Because for our first date, we also, embarrassingly enough, went to Harry Potter World.

40:46There we bought the same matching sweatshirts that they wore in their photo, except mine was Ravenclaw and hers was Slytherin, which is too ironic to make a joke about. And this is in reference to that Halloween picture that they took of them in matching Harry Potter, like, sweatshirts. Yeah. And I remember that photo broke the internet because they posted it on Instagram. And she was like, that was so traumatic for me to look at. And she went on to say in her memoir, Well, I cannot adequately put into words the type of aggravation that occurs after eight days in a row of waking up with one of her songs about being really good at sex stuck in your head.

41:16It felt like an authentic form of torture meant to personally make me go insane forever. I think we forget how, like, Cassie David was kind of thrown to the side and all that. But that was fucked up. It was fucked up. And Cassie David, you know, like you said, wrote about this in her memoir. I think it was called Nobody Asked for This. No One Asked for This or something. Which no one did because it wasn't very well written, apparently. But I still obviously feel for her in some of these chapters. She was saying that she was on a trip to Africa. like on the way to Africa on this long flight when the news kind of broke and she was having a panic attack.

41:52And it was either the news broke or Pete had broken up with her while she's on this flight. Like she was straight up having a panic attack and then, you know, had to watch this all unfold along with the rest of the world. And like you said, it was kind of just thrown aside. She had dated him for years and was there for him during some of his like darkest days of his addiction. And it sounded like it was just a very, very, very traumatic relationship with a very troubled person. And she had been there for him. And then all of a sudden she was cast aside. Yeah. Pete Davidson. It's kind of like with Ariana Grande.

42:26I understand kind of the way he is, why he is the way he is. But at the same time, you're kind of a piece of shit. The way that you discard women so flippant. Yes. And it's like trauma, like obviously, like we said, Like, trauma will inform the way you are for the rest of your life, obviously. But also, like, a lot of people have trauma and they don't turn into horrible, problematic, or, you know, whatever it is, lying, cheating people. Right. Not saying that Ariana and Pete are necessarily either of those things, but we do know that Pete Davidson has a history of being a bad partner and bad to women.

43:02And look at how he's treated Elsie Hewitt, the mother of his child, completely discarded her to the side, seemed to not be a present father whatsoever. and why would Elsie he would just throw out these allegations if they weren't true I mean no I totally believe her even though she's annoying and like I'm getting really annoyed of her like like sexualizing you know the things that she's sexualizing with her like did you see that she posted a picture of herself with poop on her baby poop and then she was like just got shit on by Scotty but here's a picture of my boobs you know what it's um who was that giving who were we just talking about that does this Imrata with her weird baby oh yeah with her exposing her boobs on Instagram.

43:39Oh my God, Amarada. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So Elsie Hewitt, don't love her content, but I totally believe what she has to say about Pete's behavior because it's a pattern for him, it seems like. It's a pattern. And similar to Ariana, he jumps from woman to woman to woman and he can never be alone and it's quite concerning. Yeah. So after Pete Davidson, she went on to date very seriously Dalton Gomez in January of 2020. And they stayed together until they divorced in September 2023. But I remember when she started dating him and everyone kind of chalked it up to some COVID romance. Like we were all kind of like hunkering down with random people and we wouldn't really know them.

44:16We're like, hey, we're hanging out. I know a lot of people actually that ended up getting married from being locked down in COVID. And other times it just completely ended up being a shit show. But I think in Ariana's case, she started dating this random guy, L.A. realtor. And she told Vogue in September 2020 after only dating for, at this point, less than a year that they were engaged. and they ended up marrying six months later. But unfortunately, that relationship ended two years after they ended up filing for marriage. They ended up divorcing. And she said it's irreconcilable differences. And there was a prenup in place, fortunately for Ariana.

44:51And I remember when they divorced, they gave him honestly not that much. I mean, not that he's necessarily deserving of any of it. Like she's worked hard for what she has. But I remember being like, damn, he's got nothing. He got a wife. No, 100%. I agree. I was just like, oh my God, that kind of sucks for him. He got a one-time payment of$1.25 million, which of course I too would like$1.25 million. But when you're married to Ariana Grande for two years, that's not that much in comparison to what she's, you know, her net worth. They split proceeds of the LA home that they shared and she covered up to$25 ,000 of his attorney's fees.

45:24And fortunately for Ariana, no spousal support. But I came across a couple of random tidbits about Dalton Gomez. I guess he was a close friend of Miley Cyrus's back in 2017. So he's kind of been in and around a clout-chasey group for a while. I didn't know that. I think, first of all, Ariana, like this is just another example of her being incredibly impulsive. She gets engaged to Pete Davidson after just, you know, a month. She gets married to this guy after a few months. Like, it's just incredibly impulsive and reckless the way that she is with men a little bit. So first of all, that. Second of all, I read a theory or saw a TikTok or whatever it was.

46:02and I think I mentioned this to you that Dalton Gomez broke up with her and this was like the first time that she had been broken up with and now he's with Micah Monroe who is a beautiful talented actress and I think this kind of fucked her up she was like I I got dumped and now he he looks good he's dating you know a gorgeous talented actress like this never happened to Ariana before I feel like she's always had the upper hand I agree I've heard that as well but Interestingly enough, as I go down the Dalton Gomez infidelity with Bach, Ethan Slater, it seems as if she was also two-timing him when she was filming in London and he was back in LA.

46:41And I'll go over a specific instance where it seemed as if both Ariana and Ethan's partners were blindsided when they started hooking up, allegedly, when they were still with their partners. But I think regardless, maybe she was trying to one-up or get ahead of it and started hooking up with Bach because she knew that Dalton Gomez wasn't interested in her. And honestly, her music in Eternal Sunshine speaks as if he was cheating on her the entire time. And that's why they ended up breaking up. Like she talks about how she's like, I hope you're happy inside of her. Like as if he was two-timing her before she was two-timing him with Ethan Slater.

47:12But we've heard so many blind items. If you guys are in the blind item world, there's a lot of blinds that well before Dalton, well before Pete, Ariana loves cocaine. Like that is forever been in the blind item industry, industry world, whatever. And I think a lot of celebrities probably are. But there's this blind item that was released in 2020. The A-plus list singer newlywed Ariana is going to have big problems in her life if her husband, Dalton Gomez, keeps using as much as he has been. Our singer kicked coke, and I would hate to see her back on it. So maybe, again, she was using with Dalton after kind of like weaning off the drug.

47:48Who's to say? But I thought that was interesting because like you never hear anything about Dalton Gomez ever. Like, he has been able to sustain so much privacy despite being in such a high-profile relationship with a high-profile star. Also, what does he do? Like, what does he do for a living? He's a realtor, but I don't get it. Like, is he a nepple baby? It kind of reminds me—I would assume he's kind of like Matt Kaplan where he's been around a lot of wealthy, famous people for a long time because maybe his family grew up in that area. But he's not famous himself. It's really weird. Like, I just don't— I think he's so hot.

48:18Ew, I don't. Really? I will. Okay. Google him. I just Googled him in the first picture that shows up on Google. He looks like he's like 14. But I think that's just a bad picture of him. He had. Okay. I know exactly. Yes. That's his realtor photo with the black backdrop with the black. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He looks like he's 14. He has no facial hair. Like. No. He doesn't look like that now. It depends. Okay. It depends. It depends on the photo. Yeah. Oh my God. I just, I just came across. I literally, when I was just talking about Miley Cyrus, there was a picture, an Instagram story of him and Miley.

48:49Oh my God. Yeah, so they were friends. He's like in and around the industry. When he was with Ariana, I didn't think he was hot. He looks really good now with Michael Monroe. He glowed up. He glowed up. Okay, then this is when her and Ethan Slater started to maybe get together. So she obviously met him on the set of Wicked. And there was some controversy because Ariana announced her separation from Dalton in February of 2023. And Ethan Slater announced his separation from his wife. That became public in July 2023. and the public quickly started to brand Ariana as a homewrecker just because less than a year prior to that, Ethan's wife had just had their son.

49:28And people were like, what the hell? Ariana, why are you with Ethan when they just shared their son together? You are a homewrecker and you have a history of doing this. And Ariana maintained, she's like, all that is just negativity that was birthed by disreputable tabloids. and Lily J, Ethan's wife, went out to say, quote, to page six, Ariana is the story, really. She's not a girl's girl. My family is just collateral damage. The story is her and Dalton. So basically saying like people should be, I don't know, I feel like Lily J has always kind of told people that Ariana is the reason that Ethan left her.

50:04And I think we can all kind of agree that is the case. And I came across this Reddit post two years ago. This is when there were rumors that they were together, Ariana and Ethan. It says Lily J and Dalton Gomez were blindsided. This person with a username, username Sunrise Effect says this information comes from people close to Lily. Ariana made her now ex-husband Dalton Gomez fly to London for her birthday. Guess who was with her at the birthday dinner? Ethan and more of the Wicked cast. But most importantly, Ethan was there. The same night or the next day, Ariana broke up with Dalton without giving him much of an explanation.

50:38Lily and Ethan had an argument because she didn't want him to have dinner with ariana for her birthday because at this point he had a child at home i'm quite sure it's because she knew ariana and ethan had had an affair months prior and then a few weeks ariana and dalton's divorce news was posted and lily realized oh my god my marriage is over too and if ariana was brave enough to leave her husband and meant that ethan was now hers to like she was leaving with dalton because she knew she had someone else waiting for on the side kind of like amanda and west a bit then ethan left lily over a text and when she flew to confront him he said that they would discuss everything at court and he quickly filed.

51:10He became so cold. Lily feels like he completely changed and she doesn't recognize him anymore. That's not the man that she fell for. Yeah. And it's like you have a child together and you're going to break up with her over text and like just be like, OK, bye. It's disgusting. And Dalton Gomez's sister, her name is Tori, she kind of was pushing these rumors ahead about Ariana and Ethan having a relationship, even when Ariana was married to her brother. So Tori Gomez posts a Daily Mail article that says Ariana Grande went on a birthday getaway with new beau, Ethan Slater. And Tori posts, same day she left my brother.

51:47Interesting, what the upside down smiley face. So all the family members of Dalton and Ethan Slater are saying, yes, the rumors are true. But of course, Ethan and Ariana were like, no, no, no, these are just rumors, you know. Oh my God. Why am I giving her the Michael Jackson voice? Because that's like kind of how she talks now after Wicked. I agree. She's like, I'm Ariana. When I was listening to Podcrush and her with talking with Pem Badgley, it was so distracting, dude. Like it really was. Because then you hear other interviews of her from 2016, which is like, yeah, yeah. The black set. Yes.

52:20Yes. It's like actually creepy to me. It is something like something on the Wicked set just changed her fundamentally. Like it's very bizarre. And the way that she just in general, just because we've been seeing her so much more like out and about on tour, she like infantilizes herself. Oh, she's like, here's me. And look, I love the baby doll dress trend as much as the next girl. I don't think necessarily that like, I know Olivia Rodrigo, everyone was like, ew, like stop with baby doll dresses. Like, no, it's a fashion trend. Like, you know, whatever. She clapped back so well. She's like, the problem is not with me wearing the big old dress.

52:58The problem was with you talking about how that is aligned with like child. Absolutely. Gross. See Sam adjacent material. Like that's weird. You're weird for saying it. Yes, exactly. With Ariana, it's not just the fashion choices. It's the way that she's acting. That's like very bizarre. It's like you're a 33-year-old woman. Like what are you doing? It's the voice. It's the clothes. It's the behavior. It's the makeup. Everything from head to toe is infantilizing herself. And it is weird. One other thing about Ethan and Lily J. So there's a receipt from Facebook on June 1st, 2023, of Lily J wishing her husband a happy birthday.

53:33It says, his birthday is tomorrow, but it's already 12 a.m. in London. So, of course, they were separated when he was filming Wicked. So happy birthday to my incredible husband, the man who helped create our perfect bundle of joy. Here's to a lifetime of love and more adventures ahead. Missing you loads. Love you, short. So again, June 1st, 2023, is when Lily J posts this to Facebook. Then TMZ breaks the story July 20th, 2023, that Ethan sat Lily down a few days before the news broke about him and Ariana and said that he wanted a divorce. Lily never saw it coming. So one month and 20 days after Lily J posts this Facebook post, Us Weekly is talking about how Ethan and Ariana are together.

54:10And we all know— Oh, go ahead. No, no, no. Keep going. I was going to say that we all know that Us Weekly releasing this means it happened like two weeks before. So literally like max a month after Lily J posts this, he had already broken up with her. Right. And it's so like embarrassing because like he blew up his entire life for someone who is the most, like we said, impulsive. She's has a fleeting attention span when it comes to guys. Honestly, like women and male dominated fields like I sure like let her do. Obviously, you know, the homewrecking thing is not great, but she's doing what men do all the time.

54:46Totally. But my point is that he blew up his entire life for her. Now, obviously, we know that they're broken up. And it's just so crazy. It reminds me of, I know you don't watch Sex and the City, but it's like a trending audio on TikToks. You may have seen this before, where a guy calls Samantha and he goes, Samantha Jones, who, you know, not too dissimilar from Ariana. She has a short attention span when it comes to guys. And he calls Samantha and he goes, I did it. I left my wife. I told her this morning. And Samantha goes, who is this? this yes that's what it reminds me of that's hilarious no a hundred percent ariana is a player but also she does it at the expense of other women yeah literally which is which is really bad and let's just not forget break up with your girlfriend because i'm bored she has a song that literally talks about this exact trope that she does you know what it is i feel like it's a complex with her also where it's like it she sees it as a challenge almost like she has been a quote-unquote homewrecker.

55:46And I also know that that term is kind of like misogynistic because it's like the men are making this decision to leave their wives and girlfriends. It's not entirely Ariana's fault. But I feel like some women see it as a challenge or even some men, I'm sure. But there's this woman on TikTok who has been posting incessantly recently about like, she's like, oh, I can steal your boyfriend. Like, I know right away he'll fold for me. Like, I can just sense the vibes if your husband will fold for me or whatever it is. It's like some women see it as a challenge. that they can like steal someone's way from her husband.

56:18Yes. And I think that there is a certain type of personality that will do that, unfortunately, because when you think about maybe certain people in your lives, you know, once a person does that, whether you're the cheater or you're the person being cheated with that person, it becomes kind of this like pattern of behavior that is difficult to ignore because I've seen it in my own life as well. Not in my own life, but people in my life. And kind of speaking to your other point earlier about how she can't be alone. There was a blind item that was released just two weeks ago saying, quote, the team of the actress-singer, Ariana, had to stop her this week from getting married to her boyfriend slash former ex, meaning that now, potentially, she's trying to get married again to Ricky Alvarez, the backup dancer that she's now back together with.

57:02I actually saw that. And like I said, impulsive. It's so impulsive. You have a pattern of behavior of getting married or guys that have girlfriends and getting married to them so quickly after six months of knowing them. It's very, very unsettling. Right. Okay, so let's go back to the kind of the Nickelodeon, the quiet on set rumors. There's been just so much discourse and Dan Schneider himself has had to speak on all the discourse on quiet on set. He actually sued Warner Brothers, Maxine Productions, Sony Pictures Televisions, the directors of the quiet on set documentary arguing that this documentary implied that he sexually abused children when he says he didn't.

57:37So it's impossible to ignore and Ariana had to speak on it at one point at another. And she did. And she said on Pod Crush, and I listened to this exact quote, she's like, there was, when talking about kind of all the sexual innuendos that she was made to do, she says, there was something that we were convinced was the cool thing about us is that we pushed the envelope with our humor. Now looking back on some of the clips, I'm like, damn, really? Oh, shit. She noted content that wasn't approved for the network were snuck onto things like the website because a lot of this like really hyper-sexualized clips of Ariana that are surfacing, they weren't on the main like television show.

58:14They were posted to like direct to website only clips. And she said, quote, I think the environment needs to be made safer if kids are going to be acting. And I think their parents should be therapists. I think there should be therapists there. Parents should be allowed to be wherever they want to be. And she called for mandatory therapy and contracts and said that the survivors' accounts were devastating. And she says that she is still in real time reprocessing her relationship to what happened on set on Nickelodeon. So she's not saying directly, yeah, what these kids experience on the Quiet On Set documentary is exactly mirroring my experience, but she says she's still processing in real time her relationship to it.

58:47So she's saying, I think, as much as she's comfortable on saying, and I think it kind of honestly reminds me of Amanda Bynes. You have all these Nickelodeon stars or these Disney Channel stars that today are not in the limelight. So they can speak about it as adults that have decided to take a step away. And they have themselves have said, yes, it was very traumatic and we completely like, this happened to me. But Amanda Bynes to this day still hasn't spoken on it. Ariana Grande still hasn't spoken on it. And it's like, I can imagine their relationship. What am I trying to say? Quiet On Set said a lot that Amanda Bynes was given special treatment by Dan Schneider.

59:20She would oftentimes be in his office for hours at a time with the door shut, not with any other parent in there. So you can imagine that these children say that, yeah, while he didn't like rape me, I was made to feel very uncomfortable. But we actually don't know what happened to Ariana and Amanda. And I don't fault them for not wanting to speak on it. Because, you know, it's like if they were given special treatment in front of people, what was the treatment they were granted to behind closed doors? We will never know, nor should we be privy to that. It's their choice, right? Like they are at the end of the day the victim here.

59:55And it is absolutely their choice because once you put that information out there, especially as a public figure, like you don't know how it will be weaponized. against you. You can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. And it reminds me, actually, I haven't watched The Valley this week, but I know that Janet, I think, shared something about her being sexually assaulted as a child. And she released a statement. She was like, I have been, you're kind of reliving it when people are talking about it and you're watching it air on TV and you're opening it up to the world. It's a very vulnerable place to be.

1:00:26So I can understand why someone might not be ready yet or may never be ready to talk about it. Yeah. No, that's such a good point. And I think that I don't even want to call it a luxury because that's not the right word. But the kids that are so brave or now adults that are so brave to come on set and talk about the abuse that they sustained at the hands of Dan Schneider and the executives at Nickelodeon, like they're so brave in doing that. And they also don't have the same fame that Ariana and Amanda Bynes have. So the experience is it's all shitty at the end of the day. But to your point, they have a different type of stardom that could they could suffer different types of criticism um so i completely understand why ariana maybe doesn't want to speak on it and we'll never know but i respect whatever it is yeah whatever her experience is and whatever her decision is but again there's so many child stars that come up so fucked up in different ways amanda binds is one story mary kate nashley they want full privacy hillary duff is like the one instance i think out of anyone that has been able to keep a normal life shia labeouf another one so i think ariana the way that she's behaving because she's still very much in the limelight we look at it and we're with a lot of judgment but then we can look at someone like well people still get britney spears a lot of shit too but i think it's britney spears and shia labeouf it's easier to kind of chalk it up to like that's really sad shia labeouf is an abuser so that's kind of different i don't know what am i trying to say ariana is still on her own volition in the limelight so people are ready to criticize her a lot more than they would be to say Britney Spears, for example.

1:01:55I'm not saying any abuse is better or worse. But what I'm saying is if for someone like Ariana who chooses to stay in the spotlight, who's still making a lot of money, she's still up for public consumption in a way that Shia LaBeouf and Britney Spears are not. That's what I'm trying to say. So it's just different, but traumatic nonetheless. All these kids. Well, Britney Spears will always, you know, be in the limelight in some way, even if she's not putting herself out there. She's Britney Spears, So she will always get the attention and the backlash. It's just that Ariana Grande is working still.

1:02:26And I don't know. Yeah. I think you guys kind of understand what I'm saying, though. And it's very sad. And I think a lot of people are a little bit disappointed with Ariana because her not speaking up specifically on Dan Schneider. Does that imply you have loyalty to this man? Why are you silent when so many people were brave enough? I wouldn't say that. I wouldn't make that jump. I wouldn't either. No, I completely wouldn't. I hope people are saying this. I hate that. I hope people aren't saying that because it's like you don't know her reason. You don't know what happened. You don't know her reasons for not.

1:02:56Yeah. No, I completely agree. Not everyone needs to speak on their experience. It is their decision to tell like what Janet said. Like it's right. I have a lot of anxiety even talking about this. So obviously it's a very delicate balance. But whatever she decides to say or not say, I respect either way. um we kind of already talked about her black scent and just her changing and evolving style um another thing that i think wasn't really talked about too much when this happened was when she was in her blackiana era when thank you next came out when sweetener came out she was still very much spray painting herself super bronze and she was sorry my phone needs to go on dnd um she had this black scent and people often thought she was maybe mixed which is so crazy because she's just an Italian girl.

1:03:42Like 100 % her families are both Italian on either side. But she did look very racially. Which again, people did not like realize that, that she's literally just a white Italian. Yeah. Yeah. And I came across a specific TikTok of her saying, me and my friends can't stop saying, that's my cookie, that's my juice. And I'm not even going to try and mimic how she said it because I can't do that accent and I feel and comfortable doing it. But it's just so different from how she speaks now. And that same could be said about the way that she was musically inclined to talk in a way that kind of mimics Black artists.

1:04:17So for instance, in Seven Rings, she was actually sued by a rapper that went by the name DOT because he said that the similarities to your song Seven Rings sounds just like my song. And let me go down. Yeah, his name is Josh Stone. And in 2020, he filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement for Seven Rings, saying that he was not credited on the track. He alleged that the song was a forgery and plagiarized from his song, You Need It, I Got It, that he wrote two years earlier. And the suit names Ariana and seven other songwriters as defendants, along with several publishing companies involved in the song, including Universal Music Group.

1:04:50And according to the lawsuit, a comparative analysis of the beat, lyrics, hook, rhythmic structure, metrical placement, and narrative context by musicology experts or everyday listeners alike demonstrates clearly and convincingly that Seven Rings copy the song, I Got It. And specifically the lyric, you like my hair? Gee, thanks. Just bought it. He says it sounds just like his song where he says, you want it? I got it. You want it? I got it. And I listened to his song. The beat is very similar, but like, I don't think it sounds that much like it. And I think that this often, a lot of songwriters do have lawsuits against them saying this is a copyright infringement of my other song.

1:05:27Like, I actually don't know. I'm not like a musical, musically talented person. But I don't know. You guys can let me know what you think if Seven Rings sounds like D.O.T.'s. Yeah, I don't know. I have no idea. I'm not one to say. But I will say that how many new melodies can be invented at this point? Yeah, exactly. It's like I don't understand how you could even be original at this point. Like every song exists already, it feels like. I completely agree. Like even like, oh, I've been listening to Olivia Rodrigo's new album. by the way, which I love based on your recommendation. It's so good.

1:06:04There are like, and it's so original. It's so like her. There are a few songs. Like there was one, oh my God, what song was it? Where the intro, it's guitar. And I'm like, this sounds like a Nirvana song. Like there are just like so many like callbacks. And I think that there are some, you know, references that every artist will take, you know? Yes. Yes. And I think I talked about this in the Lana episode, but Without You by Lana Del Rey sounds eerily similar to Taylor Swift's Wildest Dreams. And Without You came first. It's like... And it sounds very much like Wildest Dreams, lyrically, sonically, but you didn't see Lana suing Taylor.

1:06:46I mean, who would at this point? You know, that's very scary. But let's move on to a lot of her other cultural misappropriations that goes above her black scent. So she got this tattoo. It was a Japanese palm tattoo intended to read seven rings. But she mixed up the Japanese characters. And it actually looks like it says seven rings wheels. And it spells, I can't say this. It's a Japanese word for small charcoal grill slash barbecue. Shishirin? Yeah, shishirin. And now she calls it her Japanese barbecue finger. but she's like i can't read or write kanji obviously but it was done out of love and appreciation but this doesn't help the rumors that she is asian fishing in 2021 she started to wear different eye makeup she wasn't black yon anymore it wasn't the bronze look she had a very different like fair skin she was wearing like her normal skin color finally her dawning there was no spray tan involved she had eye makeup that made her look like she had monolids it was her eyes were very snatched very light makeup which is a huge change from her usually bronze look and again it's kind kind of harkens back to people saying, like, why are you kind of, there's a lot of Asian stereotypes that were like sexually submissive and very demure and almost like, I think a lot of cultures will infantilize like Asians.

1:08:04And Ariana Grande was kind of playing into those tropes. So not only was her makeup very Asian inspired, it's like the Eastern methods of doing your makeup, but also the way that she was dressing looked very young. And they're like, even the way that you're posing, It promotes and stereotypes like that fetishization of Asian culture. And after these accusations, she deleted the pics from socials. Honestly, like, I'm Asian. And I can say I'm not offended by these photos. But I can see why people think. I think given her history, I understand why people can be offended. Yeah, it's also just, like, weird.

1:08:36Like, it's weird. Yeah. You've been blackfishing for how long? And then all of a sudden you, you know, decide, oh, that's not cool anymore. So I'm going to Asian. It's, like, just bizarre behavior. Exactly. It's not offensive. It's just like, what's going on? Why do you keep changing? Like, why are you doing this? It's strange. Yeah, right. And I don't want to come at this judgmental. I also, wait, just really quickly before we get into that, because I obviously think that's really important.

1:11:58I think, because I know that there's like a whole like, you know, the plastic surgery, the change of appearance thing. I think that she got an upper bluff. Yes. And that's also what makes her look like she's constantly surprised. Yes. And it gives her this, like, bizarre, like, it's uncanny. Yes. Like, seeing her in the trailer for the new Not Meet the Fockers Focker-in-law movie. Yeah. It's like she can't play a normal person. Like, it works in Wicked when she's playing, like, a fairy, like, witch princess. Yeah. But when she's playing like a normal human being, it doesn't work. Like there's something so uncanny about how she looks now.

1:12:36Sorry, I just wanted to say that. Yes. Thank you for saying that. I think the upper bluff caused such a distinct change in her face. She's constantly surprised looking. And I think because of the weight loss, she's so gaunt and her face is so hollow that it doesn't help the surprised look either. When you talk about Ariana's weight loss, it is, I think, at the end of the day, very startling. and it is hard to ignore. I think that when we talk about someone like, for instance, Alex Earl, she's just coming up in my feed recently a lot on TikTok and people commenting on who she's hanging out with and her body.

1:13:08And I think Alex Earl has lost a lot of weight. And I think that people talk about that in a way that feels more like early 2000s, 90s, of like Lindsay Lohan, heroin chic. When it comes to Ariana's body, it's more so just troubling. And I think coupling that with her old Tumblr and IG blog posts, She would often post pro-anorexia content. For example, how it feels to have three coffees and no lunch, liked by Ariana Grande. Under my Met Gala Sophie shorts, I'm wearing, under my Met Gala dress, I'm still wearing my Sophie shorts that still fit from the fourth grade. I hate Americans. I hate America.

1:13:42When she was talking about that donut gate thing, but I think people were saying that was a commentary on like obese Americans. And she even said herself, she's like, when I was saying I hate Americans, it was more a commentary on like the obesity epidemic that we in America face. but when you're looking at a lot of her tumblr content it's a lot of body checking it's a lot of food like post-show dinner and it's just a picture of just like six strawberries and some edamame which is like not a nutritious meal at all like you don't have your veg your starch your proteins it's just like rabbit food um there's a picture of her from her backside saying uncalled photo uncalled for photo of my tush lol and it's like that thigh gap kind of look um in many a photo there's a picture of her saying veggie monster and she's eating edamame a lot of like green juice a lot of her photos even today i can tell on her instagram we're very much body checking she'll be like stuffing herself in like a guitar case like look i'm so small i can fit into these like tiny little spaces um she just doesn't look healthy um there's a snapshot of her it's a Snapchat photo of her eating spinach and it says the divine spinach.

1:14:48And I think honestly, what was very troubling for me was that Papwalk she did just last week or two weeks ago at this point where she's leaving Whole Foods with a bunch of groceries in her hand. Yeah, that was like so, it felt like so performative. It's like, oh, you're trying to prove that you eat. Yeah, it kind of reminded me of when Mary-Kate Olsen, right before she checked herself into an eating disorder treatment facility when she was on SNL and she was cosplaying as this paparazzi and she was like mary kate you're so skinny eat a sandwich and like that was part of the bit when really that's you kind of leaning into feeling superior because you're not eating and people noticing that you're not eating because you're so thin right um yeah informative is a good way to say it something something like happened like i said something happened on the set of wicked i don't know what it was about that movie that when you look at cynthia eribo also before filming wicked she also was a normal weight and she was healthy and strong healthy Yeah.

1:15:43And then all of a sudden, you know, they both just came out looking extremely gaunt and frail after filming the movie. And the way that they would be on the red carpet, I think also people were like, what is going on? Like, they would be like very like touchy feely. And it was just kind of like bizarre. And I understand they went through this, you know, incredible experience together playing Elphaba and Glinda and, you know, were filming together for months and months and months and probably became incredibly close. But it almost seemed like it was like this weird, like, you both look sick. You are acting a bit off and strange.

1:16:20Your demeanor is strange. It just, you know, there's something very bizarre about it all. Yeah. And I think Ariana addressed it one time during the Bicked Press tour. and people were very confused by the hip behavior, reasonably so, because it just seemed very off. But Ariana basically clapped back and said, in a polite, respectful way, she was basically like, you know, the body that you guys are used to seeing was me at my least healthy. Like I was on a lot of medications. I was drinking a lot. I wasn't eating what fueled my body. And now what you're seeing is my homeostasis body. I can tell you with my entire chest without knowing her medical history or anything, this body is not normal, period.

1:16:55Like, I don't think that's a controversial thing to say and it shouldn't be a controversial thing to say. I think that this body coupled with prior posts on Tumblr, things that she likes on Instagram, she clearly has struggled with food and body image, which I think is very normal for any woman. But when you look at her body today, 100%, I can say with certainty, if she checked herself into an eating disorder treatment facility, they would say, you cannot come. You need to go to the hospital because she looks like she's about to break in half. She's so thin. It's just not normal to me. And speaking of blind items, there was one recently that she is so, she's obviously on tour and she is so weak that apparently her team has been having to like carry her off the stage.

1:17:41Yeah. And even when you kind of look at dance moves from her when she was on her Sweetener tour, I remember watching her on that tour actually and feeling like she just didn't seem happy. But I don't know. I just feel like she was still dancing her ass off. She just didn't seem like her full. She didn't seem happy touring. And I don't know if like being on tour right now when her body looks like this is the best for her physical and mental state. Touring is fucking hard. Like me and Sophie were joking, even going to three cities, it's hard because you're out of your home. You're not in your normal routine.

1:18:10You're traveling. You're on planes. It's very difficult on your body. And I think that if you're not eating, that makes it a million times more stressful and dangerous, quite honestly. So I think, yes, it's never okay to comment on a woman's body, but we're not even commenting on it in a judgmental way. It's more so it's hard to ignore when it's in our faces this frequently. It's also been. It's all over TikTok. Yeah. It's also it's been like there's been so much discourse around it because she is so out there right now on tour. Yeah. She's not hiding. She is out there. She is showing off how she looks right now.

1:18:46And a lot of people are saying that she does not look healthy. And that's, I think, OK to say, especially because she has so many fans that are like young women. And I hope that there aren't young women watching her that are like, yes, that's my ideal body type because it shouldn't be. Like, she does not look healthy at all. Yeah. And I think that's okay to say. Yeah. But, yeah, obviously, overall, always hate commenting on any woman's body. But I think that this is something that is worth saying, obviously. Yeah. And I think that when we were talking about the infantilization too, I think a lot of what happens when you're deeply anorexic is that you lose like your period.

1:19:24Like that's a very common symptom. And I think that it's like you lose all functions of being a woman and like, you know, the intuition, like just being able to be a woman is so special. And I think that when you lose all your faculties for your body to be producing normal hormones and like your body to do its thing, it almost kind of like goes into like if you're losing your cycle, then you become like prepubescent. It has this darkness to it. And I think that couple with like the voice and the way that she's dressing. Yeah. Yeah. It's like you're regressing almost into a child. You look like a child.

1:19:56But I think that's kind of the desire. There's this last frame that I have. Look at that last picture that I put of her. None of the pictures have loaded for me this entire time. It's all like a, yeah, none of them have loaded for me. So weird. Yeah, it's okay. But basically, it all showed on my screen. Can you, this one. Oh my, yes. That is exactly the dress that I was thinking of. When people are like, why are you dressing like this? She's dressed like a child. Like that is like what a five-year-old wears to their birthday party. Yes. And like even the birthday hat. And just to describe it, you guys, it's literally like it looks like, what's that children's store called?

1:20:34Osh-Bosh? Osh-Cosh-Babosh? Osh-Cosh-Babosh. Yes. It literally looks like a dress from there. It's a little cap sleeve, like baby doll dress. Like it's literally just a baby doll dress, but it's like long. It looks like just a princess dress that like a five-year-old would wear to her birthday party. Yes. And yeah, there's just, yeah, part of being a woman is like you have curves, you have boobs and like, you know. But also it's okay if you don't have those things. It's okay. Yeah, it's okay. We don't need to talk about women's bodies anymore. Like it's just, it's concerning, obviously. It's concerning.

1:21:04Yeah. So I just want her to be well. And I think that people snarking on her in a mean way, it's just not good. Like I think above all else, we need to be concerned in a loving and compassionate way towards her. And my friends always say they're like, she's a bad person. like look what she did to like that i'm like yeah but look what she's gone through i really try and give her grace because i do think she's a very soft like ooey gooey compassionate person i just i don't think she knows how to handle her life sometimes and i want better for her i like want to hug her and be like you were so safe and a good person and i want you to come back to yourself and reach for that inner child without having to like physically be an inner child like reach for that compassionate side of you that we all know and love.

1:21:50So I just really love her and I hope she is well. And any closing thoughts? Yeah, I guess like you said, you know, she has been through a lot. It doesn't excuse some of the, you know, strange or troubling or problematic behavior because there is, you know, a lot here that, you know, is not great. But she has been through a lot. And I think all things considered, like I said at the beginning, like she became famous so young and I think she has turned out relatively okay it's crazy because we were just talking about how unhealthy she looks and how like sick she looks but like for the most part she's turned out like okay yeah you know what's so like it's not funny obviously but what the difference is between like men and women sometimes is that men like Shia LaBeouf they go through a lot of trauma when they're child actors and they go and they're like violent and like hurt people whereas women it's like the hurt is to themselves you know yeah like um which is sad so you guys let us know your thoughts i know that there's a lot to unpack because i think that a lot of things about ariana can trigger a lot of people so i try to do this as with as much grace and compassion yeah and i think you did i think you did a great job thank you thank you um let us know what you guys think and i'm frankly very excited in two weeks here her new album pedal will be released so i'm very very very much looking forward to that i think more of her story will hopefully be told through that album and you guys um we do patreon episode bonus content every wednesday and add free dets and what's the snark over there as well and we do sub stack every friday where we're talking about shows we're loving things that made us pee our pants links we're loving to like clothing or beauty products all the fun things the sub stack link is in our bio all of our instagram uh links are in our bio as well.

1:23:34Sophie. In our show notes. In our show notes, yeah. Sophie and Rachel do such a fabulous job with our Instagram and the DET carousel is cracking up every single time. So follow us over there. TikTok, all the things. You can find all in our show notes. We'll see you next week for another episode of DET. Yes, we'll see you next week. And I think tomorrow's bonus episode is we haven't recorded it yet, but it's going to be about... Yesterday's bonus episode. Oh, you're right. Never mind. Never mind. You guys have already listened to it then. But it... Okay. Bye. No, but plug it. Plug it. Plug it. Because I, okay, so we haven't recorded it yet, but it will be about things that we have learned from Lena Dunham's fame-sick memoir and tying it back to the recent news about Margaret Quayley and Jack Antonoff.

1:24:18Brilliant. Oh, I cannot wait. Yeah. So yesterday, you guys, that episode's on our Patreon already. So I'm actually really looking forward to that because there's so much to say about Jack Antonoff. So much to say about all of this. And I know nothing so far. And like you guys said, this is very snarkbait-coded, this whole scandal. It's Lena Dunham. It's Drew Starkey. I mean, it's not really a scandal. It's like a divorce. But there are a lot of rumors going around. So very snarkbait-coded. Very excited to talk about that when we record tomorrow. But you guys will have heard it yesterday. Okay.

1:24:47Anyway. Okay. Bye, guys. Thanks for listening. Bye.

1:25:06Your home design should feel like you. And if it doesn't, it's not because you have bad taste. It might just be a budget problem. Well, Wayfair fixes that. This is my sixth apartment in 12 years in New York City, which is crazy to think about. So when you move that much, you become less and less enthusiastic about spending money on new pieces. Of course, I still want my apartment to feel chic and elevated, but knowing it's not my forever home makes it hard to want to splurge. That's why I've turned to Wayfair for home upgrades for over a decade now. I'm obsessed with my latest purchase. It sounds kind of silly, but we were previously throwing our laundry in an open laundry bin that just ended up looking messy and cheap in the corner of our bedroom.

1:25:41It became an absolute eyesore, so I searched for closed wicker laundry bins on Wayfair that could hide the mess and add like a chic, beachy touch to our bedroom, and I found the perfect one for under$100. It seriously was such an upgrade to our bedroom, aesthetically and functionally, it's hard to even describe it or put it into words. And it's little purchases like that that can make all the difference in your space. Ready to upgrade your home for way less? Head to Wayfair.com right now to shop all things home and get your space ready for less. That's W-A-Y-F-A-I-R dot com. Wayfair, every style, every home.

1:26:17Nothing makes you appreciate good bedding more than a hot summer night, especially when your air conditioning is broken like ours was recently. I don't want to talk about it. Having something that's lightweight, breathable, cool, and easy to sleep in, no matter how hot it gets, is so freaking important. That's why I love Quince. It's been my go-to for bedding for so long now, with high-quality materials like 100 % European linen and organic cotton. You can literally feel the difference. I love waking up not sweaty. Quince has everything you need to make your bed feel cooler, lighter, and more comfortable for summer.

1:26:47From breathable sheets to linen, shams, and duvet covers in soft, seasonal colors, relaxed stripes, and timeless neutrals. I also love their mulberry silk pillowcases and eye masks. They help keep your hair smooth and skin hydrated overnight because they don't absorb your natural oils like other materials do.

1:27:24Quince bedding is made for literal beauty sleep, you guys. And in case you need a reminder, everything at Quince is 50 to 80 percent less than similar brands because they work directly with ethical manufacturers and cut out the middleman. So you're paying for quality materials without the luxury markup. Make your summer bedding feel better. Go to Quince.com slash Snarkbait for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. Now, I was looking for fun ways to tell you that Mint's offer of unlimited premium wireless for$15 a month is back. So I thought it would be fun if we made$15 bills. But it turns out that's very illegal. So there goes my big idea for the commercial. Give it a try at mintmobile.com slash switch.
