In short
A flashback rerun of Snarkbait Pod revisiting Arielle Charnas (“Arielle Tarnas”) and her “Something Navy”/influencer career, focusing on contradictions between “quiet luxury” claims and heavy logo/label spending, plus major backlash during the March 2020 COVID scandal and its fallout (sponsor losses, Nordstrom distancing, and public apologies).
Guest backgrounds
No guests appear in this episode. Hosts are Christy and Sophie Ross. The episode discusses third parties (e.g., Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Charnas, Nordstrom, and a healthcare worker follower) but they are not interviewed.
Key claims
Arielle built her brand from 2009 blog street-style success and later became a label-obsessed influencer; she allegedly tried to “cosplay” quiet luxury while buying/advertising high-end logos. Her husband Brandon is portrayed as repeatedly disrespectful and “lames-coded.” The March 2020 COVID test/Hamptons quarantine behavior is framed as privileged, tone-deaf, and reckless, leading to sponsor drops and reputational damage. Her apology is criticized as victimizing rather than addressing timeline harm.
Notable examples
filmed COVID test with a doctor/nurse; unboxing Louis Vuitton while awaiting results; relocating to the Hamptons while COVID-positive; nanny spotted during quarantine; Brandon DMing a critic “you’re such a loser”; Nordstrom ending partnership; investors/launch hype for Something Navy; alleged blind item about employees buying launch inventory.

2:28Get started at Redfin.com. Own the dream. Hey, everybody. Welcome back to another rerun episode of Snarkbait Pod. I'm Christy. I'm Sophie. And yeah, what better way to start 2026? This is going, this is January 1st, 2026, right? Yes. What better way to kick off a new year than with one of our favorite episodes of all time? It is our Ariel Charnas episode from October 2024. This is one of our very first episodes. OGs, remember, if you're not an OG, please enjoy. This is one of our favorite episodes. Christy, have you been paying attention to Ariel Charnas since we did this episode or not really?
3:13When she posted that Prada red and blue striped long sleeve. Yeah. I don't think we've ever received as many DMs other than Chase Stokes and Kelsey Ballerini. Or what other things do people like ping us about when something happens? Always Chase Stokes. Always when Jesse Solomon does something cringey. There are a lot of people. Arielle Tarnas is one of them because we've talked before about how she swore off logos and labels. And I was like, this isn't going to last. You know, like she's obsessed with having a T-shirt that says Prada or Miu Miu on it. So we have definitely been tracking her contradictions, her hypocrisies over on our Instagram at Snarkbait Pod on plenty of dark energy Tuesdays, I think.
3:55But this was our original deep dive on her. And you know what? She's still up to her old tricks, linking$6 ,000 jackets that have Chanel logos all over them. You can't just throw down your credit card for a$6 ,000 jacket, Sophie. I mean, come on. Get richer. I know, right? Guys, keep listening to Snarkbait. Tell your friends, maybe we'll be able to afford$6 ,000. Even if I had that amount of money, why would I spend$6 ,000 on one jacket? That's just not smart. No, I'm embarrassed. Even say that sentence out loud. Yeah, it's embarrassing. And that's not me being a hater. It's me being practical.
4:29I'm sorry. Yeah. I also don't know what's happening. We've talked about this before about how her husband, Brandon, was at one point indicted for insider trading by the DOJ. And there is no update on that. We don't know if the charges were dropped, if it's still in progress. There's really been no update. So still don't know what's going on with that. I am always on Brandon Tarnas, like, going to prison and watch. I think Brandon Charnis in an orange jumpsuit would heal a lot of us. And if you don't know any of this lore, then this episode will be even more exciting for you. If you're not familiar with the Charnis lore, like, this is going to be a fun ride.
5:11And I hate to even admit it, but—and I speak about this on the episode that you guys are about to listen to— she had this clothing line that is now Shuttered Operations called Something Navy. and there was a location in Fashion Island in Newport Beach, California. And I hate to say it, but I used to go to it because I was like, oh, and the store was always very empty, but the associates were always very nice. But that's also part of her lore, how like kind of messy of a boss she was and how the finances were never like, you know, kept in check and she didn't have the right team around her. I find her to be very interesting in her wealth, like so many influencers, gives me a lot of pause, gives me a lot of question marks.
5:52Put that alongside Shannon and Lames. Yeah, there are a lot of influencers where it like just doesn't track. And I know that influencers make a lot of money. Obviously, we know this. At least Shannon is a homeowner, owns multiple homes at this point. I mean, the Charnas's are not. Yet, she has 25 Hermes bags and multiple$6 ,000 jackets. So the math does not math when it comes to Ariel. Do you ever think with these types of influencers that don these really expensive purses, they have to be going on Vivrelle, right? I think that that is definitely possible. And Vivrelle is a luxury bag rental service, by the way.
6:34So Christy is saying that they're probably renting some of these bags. I think it's definitely possible renting them or buying them and then selling them on the secondary market or wearing them and returning them. I don't know. It's a very mysterious, mysterious situation for a lot of these influencers, but specifically Arielle. Her finances are the most confusing, I feel like, to all of us. So yeah, I hope you guys enjoyed this really special rerun and you had an amazing holiday, an amazing new year. We miss you guys. We are so excited to be back. Our regularly scheduled programming next week.
7:16Yeah, I miss you guys. I think that both of us had a nice vacation. I mean, we're recording this from the past. So future me, I hope you had a good vacation. So we're going to be in L.A. on May 15th, New York on June 12th and Chicago on June 14th. all 2026. So within the next, you know, five to six months, we're so damn excited to see all of you guys in person in the flesh, dare I say, though I know that some people can say that's a dark energy term.
8:04We are so excited. We are pulling out all the stops we promise this is going to be the show of a lifetime. We're so excited to get to meet you guys in real life. 9:27Welcome back to another episode of Snarkbait. I'm Christy and I'm joined by my fellow co-host, the beautiful, the stunning, the smart, Sophie Ross. How's it going, Sophie? Oh my God. Thank you. Hi. Good morning. I know you guys, it's very early. it's 6 45 in the morning it's 6 45 christy's time and it's 9 45 my time which is like basically my 6 45 like 9 45 to me is 6 45 i know well we don't talk about logistics for recording i go so how does 9 45 eastern sound and she responds oh my god yeah i was like i i'm not a morning person. And I do love recording in the mornings because it's just kind of like we knock it out.
10:15Yeah. We're both here with our coffee. But yeah, hate mornings. Not a morning person, but this makes it a little bit better. I know I'm such a morning person and I'm really annoying about that, but I agree. It's kind of nice to kickstart our day talking, talking shit. Talking shit. No, like I literally quit my last job because I wanted to be able to sleep in more. So now I have a fully remote job so I can sleep in. And most of your company is also on the West Coast. Yeah. So I have no meetings in the morning. Literally, it was what drove me to this job was being able to sleep in. I love that for you.
10:57How have you been doing since we last recorded? Good. Actually, though, I will say you can see Christy, you can see Baxter in the background my dog so I don't get to sleep in as much now that I have a dog um but good my wedding is next week which is crazy to say my uncle texted me this morning and he was like see you next week and I was like wait wow it's literally next week are you doing a honeymoon directly after the wedding? No, we're doing our honeymoon in December. Got it. We did that on purpose because we basically are taking the entire month of December off. It's like a three-week honeymoon, which is, I know, a privilege.
11:43One of the perks of my job is that I have unlimited PTO. And I already ran it past my boss. I was like, so I'm going to go away for like a month in December for my honeymoon. She was like, okay, cool. And my fiance has been saving up his PTO. so we're taking a three-week honeymoon and then when we get back it's like Christmas and New Year's which we don't celebrate Christmas because we're Jewish um which again anti-Semites turn it off see yourself out um so yeah we're basically taking like a month off for our honeymoon which is such a privilege and I'm so excited after all the stress of wedding planning and just everything, I am ready for it.
12:24Where are you guys going? I know you were deciding between a few places in Asia. So where did you guys end up landing? Oh, my God. I thought I told you. We're going. I'm sorry to everyone. This is I sound like the most annoying person ever talking about this because it's so like braggadocious. Again, I haven't been on vacation in a long time. we're going to Japan and Thailand. So I know I actually am getting so excited for Tokyo. What's part of Tokyo that, oh my God, what's the name of it where it has the little like cozy bars? Oh my God. I can't remember the name of it. It's been a while for me since I've been to Japan.
13:06The last time I went was in 2017. Oh, Golden Guy. Golden Guy. I don't think I ever made it there when I was over there. It's like a little like cozy alleyway of all these little tiny bars. Yes. Okay, of course. I know exactly what you're talking about. I didn't realize that there was a name for it, but Tokyo is incredible. It's so easy to get around. The people are very nice. Everything is very clean. Everything is very technologically savvy. And then Thailand will be a completely different world. Yes. Thailand is more for like me literally being on my ass the entire time. Absolutely. Like you need a vacation where you have the touristy stuff where you run around and do five million things.
13:46And then you need to decompress. And typically those vacations are like two separate vacations. But the fact that you get to do two in one, amazing. It's yeah, it's great. And it's funny because my fiance is the kind of person that like loves guided tours and like activities. And I'm like, we can do that in Japan. When we get to Thailand, I am on my ass. You know? Yes. Yes. The best of both worlds. I'm very excited for you. Thank you. How have you been, Christy? Enough about me. Oh, how have I been? Nothing really going on here. I myself am going to be in Asia next month. I'm going to Taiwan. And I've never been.
14:24My mom is from Taiwan, but she's not been back since she came from there to the U.S., to Huntington Beach, California. So we're going to go back to her old stomping grounds, though, of course, it'll have changed significantly since she last lived there. I'm going to do like a trip with my dad and my mom. And my sister's pregnant, so she can't join us. But I'm very excited to just eat my way through Taipei because Taiwanese food is like my favorite. It's like the soup dumplings. It's like scallion pancakes, like that kind of greasy, oily Chinese foods. Oh, my God. Yum. That's so fun. So we'll both be Asian girlies over the last quarter of the year i had a layover in taiwan once but i've never been very commonplace for layovers because i too had a layover in taipei when i went to thailand this was a long i will say the airport food was great but that was like my only yeah yeah but should we get into the episode this has been a person that has been highly requested and i have to shout you out that the reason I first became introduced to you was because I did an episode on X's all about Arielle Charnas and who is, by the way, our person today, if you couldn't tell by the episode title, but you had a really, really good Twitter thread about all of her lore, all of her scandals.
15:47And this is when I had reached out to Emily Rose of It's Become a Whole Thing and said, do you think Sophie Ross would do my show because I want to talk about Arielle Charnas? So she's kind of the impetus of our relationship. I see that you wrote that in the outline. I was like, wow, was that really what happened? But yeah, that Twitter thread about Arielle Tarnas in 2020, it was during her COVID scandal, was kind of like my first viral moment. It ended up going super viral. There's a lot of lore. Our outline is extremely long. We were saying we might need a part two. We're going to see where we land with timing.
16:23but there's a lot to cover when it comes to Arielle Charnas and just like the greater cinematic universe when it comes to Arielle Charnas. There are a lot of side characters. So yeah, I guess like let's get into it. I'm really excited and I think exactly like what you just said about her being one of the OG influencers. The kind of star class I'd imagine her to be a part of is almost like an Emily Schumann of Cupcakes and Cashmere. Yes. The Girlies that started on blogs, on websites that were doing looks on the street, you know. That was such a core memory for us millennials in like late high school to early college.
17:04And they all had names. So like Emily Schumann's was Cupcakes and Cashmere. Ariel was obviously Something Navy. I was obsessed with Rumi Neely Fashion Toast. I was obsessed with her blog. I remember like literally that was back when we would actually look at websites. Oh, yeah. I remember. Yes, of course. websites back in the day and not just like Twitter and Instagram. Right. And who else? Oh, Man Repeller, Leandra Medine. And these are all people I feel like that maybe deserve their own episodes. But yeah, so Arielle Tarnas was one of those OGs. And she started her blog, Something Navy, in 2009.
17:44She was 22. She was a recent Syracuse grad. And if you're listening this, I feel like you probably know who Arielle Tarnas is, but if you don't, we're going to explain all of the background, all of the lore. A big talking point of hers is that she started her blog originally to impress an ex-boyfriend. She really took off even before Instagram. Instagram is what really, I think, catapulted her, but her blog was definitely popular before Instagram was even a thing. Started in 2009. And she was known for kind of mixing and matching high-low. She would frequently wear, you know, Zara, H &M, and then would like mix in a Chanel bag.
18:26As time went on, and we'll get into this, she has become a label queen. She is obsessed with any sort of splashy label. Anything that like shouts, oh, I'm wearing a Miu Miu sweater. Oh, or this casual striped sweater is Celine. Everything needs a label. So that's kind of what her brand has evolved into. But originally, she wasn't as much of a label whore. Can we talk about that, the brand thing, really quickly? I want to touch on that because I came across a Twitter thread that I believe you might have sent me about The Row. And if you're unfamiliar with the brand, The Row, it's a company that was founded by Mary-Kate and Ashley in the early 2010s, I believe.
19:11They relied basically on letting the clothing speak for themselves. They had serum marketing. There's no branding associated with any of the clothing or the items or the handbags or anything like that. And I think it's really interesting when we have the designers have these products that just splash their label on them. And if you think about it, wealthy people do not wear things like this. When does it actually become something that's truly coveted like the row? Right. And that's kind of like when we talk about old money, the old money aesthetic, quiet luxury, like that is what we're talking about is kind of Kate, Thoreau, Totem.
19:53There are a lot of just like quietly luxe brands that don't have those flashy labels. And then, you know, the people that we see on Instagram, I feel like those influencers that have gotten their wealth from social media in the past few years, that's more of like a nouveau riche aesthetic. I think what's interesting about Arielle is that I think that she tries to cosplay as, you know, quiet luxury. Like she loves, she does love The Row, but nothing about her as quiet luxury because she loves labels more than anyone you will ever see on Instagram. Just go to her Instagram right now if you don't believe me.
20:27Anyway, that's an aside. Really quickly, who do you think is more flashy with their labels, Shannon Ford or Arielle Charnas? just based on the way that Shannon spends money. Oh my God. I think that Shannon is more overtly nouveau riche in the way she dresses. Ariel, again, I feel like tries to cosplay as quiet luxury, but like isn't. So I think she tries, but then like she just like can't help it. She needs the label. She needs the sweater that has the huge Celine label on it. You know, like Ariel really tries not to be, whereas I feel like Shannon just like, is just like proudly nouveau riche.
21:04Like I don't think she pretends to be quiet luxury. Instagram launches, obviously, in like, what, 2010? Ariel starts her Instagram in 2011, and she immediately takes off on the platform. And by 2017, she has over 1 million Instagram followers and over the years, tons of brands. I think I discovered her in 2014. I was like a postgrad and living in New York City, and she was really known for her street style shots in New York at the time. She's always promoting brands. She's in a Tresemme commercial. She has tons of brands enlisting her to promote their products and what she promotes really sells.
21:45Like she, she's just one of those classic influencers who kind of started the genre of influencing. In 2014, she marries her husband, Brandon Charnas, who more on him in a bit. So much scandal surrounding his name as of late. Yes, there's a lot to say about old Brandon. And in 2016, she has her first child, Ruby, and her hosting her children becomes a big part of her brand also. I feel like she kind of transitions into not a mommy blogger, but kind of. Like, her kids become a big part of her content moving forward. In 2017, she parlays her success and devoted audience into a very successful partnership with Nordstrom.
22:33It's her first foray into turning her brand into something tangible with a clothing line. And it was an instant hit and sold out immediately. That's interesting because when I think of Emily Schumann, she too had a line with Nordstrom with the self-titled name of her blog, Cupcakes and Cashmere. And I actually don't think they sell at Nordstrom anymore. I haven't seen Cupcakes and Cashmere in years, but I remember always seeing it near Brass Plum. But it's these OG fashion influencers that got their start on these websites doing street fashion that perlay their success into tangible clothing line.
23:08Become such a commonplace thing. And I always say it, Mary-Kate and Ashley started it at the very beginning with their Walmart fashion line. But it's very interesting kind of the parallels that I'm starting to see with Ariel and Emily Schumann just at the onset of their careers because I'm more familiar with Emily. Totally, totally. And it's kind of like, oh, can you turn this kind of digital audience into real money? And in their cases, yes, at the time. I'm not saying, you know, present day, that's possible for a lot of these influencers. but this was kind of like the heyday of some of these influencers, the 2010s.
23:46In 2018, she has her second child, Esme. And something about Arielle is that she's always kind of received criticism for quote-unquote setting unrealistic body standards. She is presumably naturally thin. If you see her family, her mom is like an Instagram chef whose account is Carrie's Table. She's also very thin. She has two sisters. Danielle Goldberg is a very successful Hollywood stylist with a lot of successful, very famous clientele. Her other sister, Michaela Podolsky, is married to the founder of The Farmer's Dog. Michaela sucks and deserves her own episode, but her whole family is thin.
24:30So she's presumably naturally thin, but she would occasionally be tone deaf about it. So it's like there's only so much you can help the way you look. And also I will say that skinny shaming, it's not a thing. And I say that as someone who has been quote unquote skinny shamed before. Like it's not a thing. It's not a thing. Like it's just, it's just not. I'm so glad you're saying that, by the way, because I hate when influencers come on and say, thin influencers come on their platforms and say since when did it become okay to comment on women's bodies and it's like yeah they're like you wouldn't say that to a to a fat person and it's it's the whole age-old tale of being in a big body is not seen to u.s societal to general societal standards as being attractive, whereas thin women are seen as being attractive.
25:29I don't make the rules, so it's a completely different argument, and I hate when people say that. Exactly. In 2019, she posts a photo of herself in a bikini looking very thin, obviously, as she always does, with the caption, proud of my body after two kids. Actress Amanda Seyfried, who you probably know for Mamma Mia, Mean Girls, etc. The Dropout playing Elizabeth Holmes, which she won an Emmy for. So it deserved. She calls her out for promoting that archaic idea of, oh my God, my body bounced back after kids. A bounce back. I'm so proud of how my body bounced back. Like, what are you proud of exactly?
26:09She posts basically a long, long paragraph about how if we're ready to get, I'm trying to kind of paraphrase this because it's really long. It's really long. Yeah. So she posts a message from her friend. This is Amanda Seyfried that says, totally fine that you're privileged and thin. Good for you. Got no problem with either of those things. But if you don't acknowledge how your wealth made your workout slash body possible, you're just perpetuating the patriarchal and totally unrealistic notion that mothers should bounce back after childbirth. An impossibility for anyone who can't afford ample child care, which is almost everyone in this country.
26:45And you're glorifying an unhealthy body image. I don't care if it's natural. Don't even try that shit with me. In a society that already fetishizes the adolescent female form, young girls don't need any more images of emaciated women. Thank you very much. I know you're better than this. And Amanda goes, my very smart friend wrote this on a semi-influencer's feed. So that's kind of a dig, a semi-influencer. And she blocked both of us, even though I didn't tag her. At least she's getting the message. If we're ready to get paid for flaunting our lifestyle and inspiring some in the meantime, we have to be open to the discussion surrounding what we're promoting.
27:19We have to back ourselves up, not run away from the issues it presents. There are gray areas everywhere. Each of us has a chance to back ourselves, especially on this platform. If you know who you are, take a second to decide if what you're throwing out there is worth it in the big picture. So yes and no. I don't have a problem with the way that Arielle just posted a bikini photo of herself. If she wants to, whatever. there's nothing wrong with that right it's the caption it's proud of my body after two kids like it's a problematic caption and i'm sorry it's intended to me that's intended to make women feel like shit about themselves because no one looks like this after a baby typically a normal woman i don't look like that before two kids right it's the caption it's made to make women feel inferior, I am better than you.

28:07Yes, exactly. A little while later, Brandon Tarnas pokes fun at all of this by posting a photo of his bikini-clad wife with a caption that took aim at her critics. It said, Warning, this body is not attainable. Please do not attempt to attain such body by working out. Please note, such warnings have been provided for in compliance with the ABSA, or the American Body Shaming Association. Like, poking fun at it. which, again, Brandon Tarnas, piece of shit. We know this by now. He's the worst. More to come on him later. I don't know about you guys, but my New Year's resolution is to keep my skin in freaking check.
28:43And obviously, One Skin gets the job done. Especially in the winter, the right skincare is so important. I absolutely love how hydrating One Skin's products are, from their signature longevity moisturizer to their concentrated eye cream. I go to bed drenched in One Skin products, and so should you, TBH. At OneSkin's cores are patented OS01, the first ingredient proven to target senescent cells, the root cause of wrinkles, crepiness, and loss of elasticity. All key signs of skin aging. Ugh. With results validated in five published clinical studies. That might be why they count so many ageless celebs like Jennifer Aniston and Katy Perry as fans.
29:21Born from over 10 years of longevity research, OneSkin's OSO1 peptide is proven to target the cells that cause the visible signs of aging, helping you unlock your healthiest skin now and as you age. As a proud auntie to the newly one-year-old Miss Mo, I take my role very seriously.
29:54I may not be responsible for keeping her alive, but I am responsible for being her favorite and gifting her amazing pajamas. And here's the thing. If there's anything I know about Miss Mo and other babies in general, if they're uncomfortable, they will let you know. And that's why I and my sister and Miss Mo are obsessed with little sleepies. First, the fabric. It's so soft, I literally want to wear it myself. They're also designed with thoughtful little details that make getting dressed easier instead of a full contact sport. You're welcome, Audrey. Also, their pieces grow with your kid, which is huge.
30:28Because every time I see Miss Mo, she's somehow a completely different size? Little sleepies actually last, so you're not replacing everything every five minutes. Which, as someone who buys the cute stuff, I deeply appreciate. If you're expecting or dressing little ones, check out little sleepies. You can visit littlesleepies.com and use promo code GOODNIGHT for 10 % off your first order.
31:14progressive.com to see if you could save on car insurance. Progressive Casualty Insurance Company and affiliates. Potential savings will vary. Not available in all states or situations. What are your thoughts, by the way, on men coming to defense of their women? And the first couple that comes to mind is when Olivia Coppola was getting all that flack on TikTok about her dress and Christian McCaffrey entered the chat and started shaming all these influencers that were putting his wife down. What are your thoughts on men? When Christian McCaffrey called a TikToker who basically just said that Olivia's like modest dress and her like modest quotes that she gave in Vogue were very archaic and he called her evil.
31:55He called her evil. And so did Olivia, by the way. Yeah. You know, part of it is like, yeah, like I want my man to defend me. I want my man to have my back. But at the same time, it's like stay out of women's business. Stay out of it. But like, especially when it comes to the body shaming stuff, like Brandon could never understand what it's like to live in a patriarchy with the beauty standards that we have as women. He just will never understand that. Like, stay out of it. And especially the fact that he's like poking fun at something that is kind of a serious topic is just it's classic Brandon.
32:34It's classic Brandon. I think there's a distinction between what Christian McCaffrey and Olivia, what Christian McCaffrey did on behalf of Olivia versus what Brandon did on behalf of Ariel. I think the Olivia Culpo thing was a little bit less nefarious. And it wasn't touching on a very, very sensitive subject that is so deeply felt by so many women. Whereas what Brandon Charnas was saying was really hitting a lot of women's insecurities. And it's just like you said, you have no relevance in this conversation. you need to exit the chat immediately. Right, like stay out of it. Yes. Yeah, totally.
33:13And 2019 is kind of like the heyday of Ariel, of something Navy. She had what appeared to be this thriving office, this thriving company with several employees. They all look just like her. They're all, you know, thin brunettes. A lot of them are like influencers in their own right. And in 2019, she decides to branch out and announces that she's making something Navy into its own clothing line separate from Nordstrom. She raises money from investors, and it's valuated at over$45 million.
33:52And everything kind of comes crashing down in a way, starting with 2020. this is kind of the year that would come to define Arielle Tarnas's legacy and in large part not to toot my own horn because of that aforementioned Twitter thread that we were referencing at the top of the show and even before kind of what happened with this COVID scandal of hers in March by the time 2020 comes around she's kind of losing touch with her followers she's becoming increasingly out of touch. She's constantly posting only exorbitantly expensive and extravagant clothes. She's no longer that kind of relatable girl next door wearing the occasional Zara.
34:33No, it's all the Ro, Celine, Chanel, Bottega, just everything expensive. She's losing touch. In March 2020, and this is the perfect example of how just completely out of touch and in her own bubble she is at this time. In March 2020, when COVID tests were still really hard to come by, I'm sure you guys remember this month very vividly, Arielle posted herself getting a COVID test because she has a quote-unquote doctor friend that let her cut the line, and she immediately got backlash for this. This was only the beginning, but she films herself getting this COVID test in her car. A nurse came out so Arielle wouldn't have to walk in.
35:19Arielle filmed it all for Instagram and tagged the doctor in his office. So it was like, oh, is this SponCon, like your COVID test that no one can get right now? Like just the privilege and just not being able to read the room is really apparent here. Her husband, Brandon, once again, he's like so lames-coded in several ways. Lames. Lames. So they're getting their COVID test. He posts a hashtag sponsored Volvo story while they're getting a COVID test. She also, while she's waiting for her COVID results, posts herself unboxing a new Louis Vuitton bag. Again, just completely, completely tone deaf, out of touch.
36:05She finally posts that she tested positive for COVID. And this is also after there's already been like a decent amount of backlash daily. Mail, page six. She got backlash just for getting the test. But this is, again, only the beginning. She tested positive for COVID and she says she will be resuming her regular content from inside her apartment. Great. Great. Stay inside. She posed herself dancing in different workout sets. Remember at the time in March when like it was all about like the chic matching sets or the tie Tie-dye. The tie-dye. But you needed like the Aviator Nation. Like, there were no one in March 2020 if you didn't have a matching Aviator Nation set.
36:46I'm sorry. Just like, we're not a knit girl. And how TikTok had its huge come to rise to fame when everyone was just posting themselves dancing. It's like a trigger response when I think about that time. Yes. Like, if you didn't have Free City sweatpants in March 2020, like, don't even talk to me. no um so she's like dancing she doesn't necessarily like she's not acting like she's sick so people are like are you using your hashtag or your quote-unquote positive diagnosis to shield yourself from this criticism like what is going on you're not like it's just a weird representation of what this at the time was a very new and scary virus like what's going on anyway i mean like she could have been positive but not showing symptoms, whatever, who knows.
37:39But eight days after being diagnosed with COVID on March 26, 2020, Arielle posts that she and her family are relocating to the Hamptons to quarantine, even though she's currently COVID positive. And if this doesn't sound like crazy to you, because maybe in today's day and age, if someone posted they were COVID positive and went to the Hamptons after their diagnosis, you'd be like, well, that's stupid, but like whatever. Again, this was March 2020. Like people were dying. People were terrified. All we knew is that we needed to stay isolated. If we were COVID positive, you do not go out in public.
38:20Like you don't. Yeah, I'm looking at these tweets that you reposted of her from her. Sorry, I'm looking at her Instagram that you reposted on your Twitter. And just the complete shameless nature of these posts. I was telling a girlfriend of mine the other day, we need to bring back Shane. This is crazy behavior that in March 2020, she was frolicking from the city to the Hampton, posting herself like it ain't no thing while she's carrying this very contagious, very deadly virus that we knew absolutely nothing about. This is crazy behavior and the most out-of-touch thing that you could do in that time.
38:56Yeah. She starts immediately getting backlash from her followers. Again, she has such a loyal following people were like really disappointed in her. Like one comment says, I've liked following you, but to be honest to my principles, I must unfollow you. What has helped spread this virus is exactly what you did. Another person goes, I have unfollowed you and it has been really hard for me to do this because I have followed you for years, but the disconnect you've shown here is so incredibly disappointing to me. You went to the Hamptons immediately prior to being sick, but then you went back home to recover.
39:27Now you're recovered and you're back on the road exposing others to this virus because you may still be carrying it. It literally lives in the air after you've left the room. And people were asking, like, how did you even go through your apartment building's lobby if you're COVID positive? And she says that she had the doorman clear out the lobby for her. People are mad. Why did you come to the Hamptons? We've become the next hotspot for corona because all of you won't stop coming out from the city. And the Hamptons also, like, famously at the time, a lot of the wealthy New Yorkers were fleeing to the Hamptons.
39:59and the Hamptons doesn't have the infrastructure. They have eight ICU beds. So people are upset. People also spot her nanny in the background of one of her Instagram lives. She's not addressing the backlash. She's acting like all of this is normal and just posting as usual. But she's supposed to be quarantining, but they spot her nanny in the background. And when someone asks her about it, she says her nanny got sick at the same time. How convenient. Poor nanny still has to work when she has COVID. I mean, when I had COVID, I literally couldn't get out of my bed. But sure, go off. I know. Oh, my God.
40:34Also, these new variants, you guys, are so awful. They're so awful. Like, it still hasn't gone away four and a half years later. Like, it's still awful. I remember thinking, I will never want this ever again. No, yeah. Last time I had it, it was horrible. She just keeps going on linking her stupid loungewear sets, but, you know, refuses to answer her followers' questions about her decision to bring COVID to the Hamptons. She's back to posting in Chanel, no less. And Brandon, meanwhile, is not helping her case one bit. What's wrong with him? He's literally in. So a fan tags Ariel and Brandon in a post and is basically like, I am disappointed in you.
41:28I've put up with you setting unrealistic body goals. I've put up with your obliviousness to your privilege and your lack of empathy to those of different socioeconomic backgrounds. And I've put up with letting my friends look up to you when I strongly disagree with your principles until today. Your decision to migrate to the Hamptons having tested positive for COVID-19, knowing the deadliness and contagiousness of said disease, prancing around as if others were immune and would not suffer the consequences of your actions. And justifying your behavior on professional opinions given by doctors you acquired through connections and your privilege is reckless, selfish, and irresponsible.
42:02Shame on you for disrespecting those who've been complying with quarantine in order to mitigate the threat. Shame on you for putting the elderly and the immunocompromised like my loved ones at higher risk. Shame on you for using your platform to encourage reckless behavior like your own rather than using it to protect and inform. Shame on you for portraying health as a privilege of the rich and illness as a disadvantage of the impoverished. And especially shame on you for nullifying doctors, nurses, and other emergency employees, sacrificial and selfless work with your actions. So, yeah, and this is what turned out to be a health care worker.
42:36So this follower was clearly very passionate, tagged Arielle and Brandon in this Instagram story. Brandon DMs her and goes, you are such a loser. Get a life. Cornell was a safety school. Ha ha ha. Because I guess like it was obvious from her profile that she went to Cornell. Loser. Loser. Energy. Yeah. He's a loser. I know. He's just a clown. Another person, you know, tags how disappointed they are. And he replies, who cares? You're irrelevant. I would expect more from you. You don't have the facts. You had potential. Now you have to be blocked. You are just like the haters in gossip columns. And this is not like Brandon's first foray into disrespecting Arielle's followers.
43:27At one point, a commenter on Arielle's Instagram, he replies with, good thing you went private after posting. And I don't know, actually, I don't have the context of what this person posted. But what's important is that he says, good thing you went private after posting your disgusting comments because some of your pictures were pretty pig emoji oink. So he calls this person a pig. Not him body shaming a stranger online, being a true online bully. Speaking of the American Association for Body Shaming or whatever his joke was, like he's body shaming someone here, but calling them a pig. Again, skinny shaming is not a thing.
44:05It will never be a thing. It will never be a thing. How is she not embarrassed by this man's behavior? She never is. It's almost like sad also if you pay attention to, and I'll get into this, but at one point she launches a podcast and just hearing them, hearing the way that he talks to her and about her, it's almost like she had to force him to propose, to get married, to have kids. It's like, even Ariel deserves better than him, in my opinion. And finally, the backlash becomes so immense that she has to address it. She posts an apology of herself crying and a longer written one. And the video apology, she says, you know, we never meant to hurt anyone.
44:58She's sorry for her actions, etc. Oh, it's like a nine-page Instagram grid. A very long apology. Yeah, the apology did not necessarily go over well. Some of the comments were paraphrasing her. My family has made the decision to do so in the Hamptons. The house we moved into is on a new, largely unoccupied street with little to no car or foot traffic. My God, the tone deafness of the entire post. In my opinion, this does not count as an apology. It sounds more like you playing the victim and gaslighting people to try and justify the dangerous actions you took. The timeline of your diagnosis to when you traveled putting countless people at risk of you spreading the disease does not sound like advice any decent doctor would give.
45:43You put a lot of people at risk. I'm sure all the elderly and at-risk people are thrilled with your let's talk about my needs actions. So again, apology does not go over well. Well, Nordstrom publicly distances themselves from her and says they have no partnership with her anymore. She lost almost all of her sponsors at this time because of the backlash. Like Amazon, ShopOp, Stuart Weitzman. Remember, like 2019 was her heyday. And in 2020, it seems like it kind of comes crashing down. You know, this kind of reminds me of when so many people during 2020, all these things were resurfacing of their past or their current behavior during the pandemic.
46:25people were dropping uh or sponsors were dropping their partnerships with all these influencers this kind of reminds me of when stassi schroeder lost oh yeah everything in march or april of 2020 when she was fired from vanderpump rules every sponsor dropped her and it's crazy to look back on that time and we're now four years out more than four years out nearly five years out which is crazy to think about and nothing fucking happens to these people yeah they like face accountability for like a week and then it's kind of like back to normal and saucy oh my god saucy's racism scandal definitely deserves and i actually was not to derail this conversation that actually was kind of like a watershed moment for me where i literally stopped being a fan of this person forever like i was diehard saucy fan and that scandal and also some of the comments she made about Me Too victims, which were disgusting.
47:22That's the only time I can think of like going from being a diehard stan, which is so embarrassing. I have a selfie when I went to a meet and greet of Stassi's in 2016. Oh, likewise. Me too. I went from being a diehard stan to like literally not giving a fuck about this person. Like Stassi, I recently re-followed her after years of not following her and she's the most boring person alive and I just do not give a shit about her and I don't know how she's still his fans. They retweet all that and the fact that she now has three New York Times bestselling books. I still don't understand how that happens.
47:54I still don't understand how she has fans after her disgusting, disgusting accusations against Faith, a person who was ex-military that could have lost her military benefits. It is truly a heinous thing that she did. And it's wild to me that people still follow her and love her. That's a lot of other episode that we can do. But this whole thing with Shopbop, Amazon, Stuart Weitzman, Nordstrom publicly distancing themselves just shows the climate that we were living in at that time and how everyone was held accountable for a week. 2020 was a year of accountability for a lot of people, but short-lived accountability.
48:29After this happened, she disappears from Instagram for about three weeks and resurfaces with lots of photos of her children and is showing herself, you know, doing charity work and philanthropy and, you know, trying to stage this comeback. back on May 9th, Brandon finally apologizes for his part in the scandal. There have been articles since this happened that have been like, why did we cancel? Like Vanity Fair had an article once that was like, why did we cancel so many influencers during COVID? We didn't know enough about the disease. We can't. We went too hard on them. And she's posted those articles being like, thank you, Vanity Fair.
49:08Thank you for vindicating me. Like she didn't learn anything from this. I think that if she were to look back at this time and if you were to ask her about it, she would say that she was victimized, that she was the victim. So I don't think she learned anything from this, but alas. The Toast Girls say that a lot, too. They were also eaten alive in their Facebook group because there was a picture. Wait, it was the Toast Girls? During maybe May or June of 2020, they had posted a picture of one of the husband's birthdays on an outdoor patio in one of their New York City apartments. and their mom was there.
49:44The other sister's husbands were there. I remember this. They were like having a gathering during COVID. And a nurse came on their toast after the dark Facebook group and basically ripped them apart saying, this is very, this is not smart of you guys. You guys are helping spread the virus. And even to this day, they say, isn't that so funny how we got canceled for having that outdoor gathering, knowing what we know now? Like to this day, they say shit like that. Oh my God. I can't with them. I cannot with them. Yeah, it's bad. Shut up. Very reminiscent. It's probably, if you talk to Stassi too, she probably still thinks that she's the victim, even though she does the lip service of like, I am taking accountability and I was wrong.
50:25Like, you know deep down that she thinks that she was the victim. She lost everything. Like, it's just, they never learn. Back summer 2020 is where we're at. This scandal is pretty unfortunate timing for Ariel because this is when she is slated to launch her standalone brand, Something Neby, as well as its first store in the West Village, which is not a cheap location to open a store, by the way. Not that there is in New York City, but the West Village in particular, definitely a pricey area to open a store. And the store is open in collaboration with Brandon's business, Current Real Estate, by the way.
51:03So she, you know, when she talks about starting the standalone brand. Her narrative is that she left Nordstrom because she, quote unquote, wanted more control. She wants to be the next Tory Burch. And the brand is going to be elevated basics, affordable luxury, et cetera, et cetera. I think everything, and again, I'm kind of pulling this out of my ass. I don't have the exact numbers in front of me, but I think the brand was like, everything was between like$60 and like$400. So maybe like, you know, reformation pricing. Yes. They name CEO is Matthew Scanlon. And Ariella's named chief creative officer.
51:48And they have these big investors like billionaire Silas Shue, who has invested in Michael Cora's Rent the Runway, etc. And the brand's first launch, like, it quote unquote sells out and seems to be doing really well. There is a blind item at the time in Crazy Days and Nights that says this blogger, influencer, designer made her employees buy all of the launch of a new clothing line just so they could say the line sold out in an hour. The employees had to pay full price and will not be reimbursed. So people are wondering like, oh, did you coordinate so that it said you sold out in an hour? Is this, you know, all contrived?
52:33No one really knows, but the brand is quickly lambasted for its crappy quality. And despite claiming to do$1 million in sales in one hour, She did take out a$350 ,000 PPP loan in 2020. And one thing I will say about what we know now is a failed brand, Something Navy, is that Arielle was never wearing it. It was like she didn't want to be caught dead in that brand. She would wear the Roe in Saint Laurent instead. She was kind of sending a message that she was too good for her own brand. There's actually a video of her doing a promotional. It's a promotional video for something Navy. And she's saying that women don't need to spend a million dollars to look trendy.
53:25Great message. I totally agree. She's wearing a$1 ,600 The Row sweater in this promotional video for her brand. What is she thinking? what is the marketing tactic from her perspective of wearing the non-clothes on a promotional video i truly do not understand from a business perspective why that is something she believes is smart it will never make sense to me it will never ever i think that it's like she's she is obsessed with being better than her followers like she needs her followers to feel smaller than her. Like, she needs to be the skinniest, the richest, the best, the most perfect life.
54:08Like, she is obsessed with portraying this perfect life, and that includes all of the uber-expensive clothes that the average person couldn't even dream of buying. I'm sorry, even if I had all the money in the world, a$1 ,600 sweater is not something I would like and spend my money on. Like, that's crazy. Yeah. And, but again, it's like that is something that she needs to portray to her followers at all times. I don't know if it's like an inferiority complex where it's like she's insecure, but she needs her followers to know that she is richer than them. She's skinnier than them always. There is something to that psychologically.
54:45It's fascinating to me when it comes to influencers that portray such an aspirational lifestyle and have this energy of that of I must be better than you. I want you to feel inferior. It has to come from somewhere and I always wonder is this like a childhood thing that developed that now is peaking because of their career or did it stem from this very very vapid shallow career I'm fascinated with how the brain operates and where this comes from because it's it's very peculiar to me and I see similar things with Shannon Ford as well it's yeah fascinating yeah it we really do need to get like a psychologist here to break it down.
55:28But again, this becomes an ongoing thing. And when her brand inevitably does fail, it's kind of like you don't really have anyone to blame but yourself. And there are a lot of different factors that go into the failure of this brand. But like that is such a huge thing to me, because how do you expect other people to buy your clothing line when you don't want to wear it, when you are too good for it? It just like doesn't make sense to me i am so embarrassed to say that i own several pieces from something navy and there was a brick and mortar shop at fashion island in newport beach and i've visited it many a time i've purchased many an item and i can attest that the quality is very very cheap wait what did you get i'll shoot the pictures because i have like photographs in them i had this asymmetrical shirt that like blue that has flowers on it.
56:20I have this cropped long sleeve black kind of it's not mesh crocheted crop top long sleeved that I wore one summer in Nantucket. I have a matching like a lot of things. It's really oh my god. Yeah. And these black shorts with this black long sleeve kind of like blazer also cropped i sold it never worn it once but yeah it's quite embarrassing to say that i wasn't really in on the ariel charnis lore until somewhat recently and i had i known i would have never supported her brand she's slimy to me but it's very embarrassing to say that i own many a piece oh it's very embarrassing I mean it happens it happens I did go into her West Village store a couple times literally not even to make fun of it or scope it out I was just like I wonder if there's anything cute in here like I'm genuinely curious and it was empty I mean all the stores have since closed and the stores it you know has since been reported on that the stores were money pits like many brick and mortar stores are in this economy.
57:38But you know what? Sure. I need to see the pictures of the clothes you got, though. Yes, definitely. In 2021, Something Navy does seem to be doing well. She announces in November of 2021 that Something Navy plans to open 15 more brick and mortar stores by the end of 2022. So that's a lot. That's a lot of money. You would expect that it's doing well. She also, at the beginning of 2021, relocates to a luxury high-rise in Miami and becomes friends slash neighbors with Ivanka Trump. along with her and Brandon, Brandon's cousin, Candace Miller, and their kids, who we will talk more about Candace Miller later in this episode.
58:18And so that's a whole thing that she becomes friends with Ivanka Trump. Wait, Sophie, I'm looking at this article and it's so funny because you're famous. You're mentioned throughout this entire article. Wait, am I? Oh, my God. Yes, you're all over this article. Let me share my screen. Oh, my God, I am. Wait, I didn't even notice that writer Sophie Ross tweeted about the budding new friendship on Friday. Wait, did they get your approval to post this? That's so funny. No, it's the Daily Mail. Like, this is crazy. You didn't even realize that. Yes, you're all. I literally didn't know. I posted the article just because I just like Googled like Ivanka Trump, Ariel Ternus.
58:57But yeah, love the shout out. Thank you so much. which you can post that on your Instagram handle, mentioned by thedailymail.co.uk. That's so funny. And it's this really luxurious Miami high-rise, this new Miami building at the time. And it's an extremely luxe, expensive place to live. I'm pretty sure Ariel's oldest daughter and Ivanka's son, Theodore, at the time, are friends. uh my god like why am i talking about a friendship between like at the time they're like four years old but uh that but that was what was that was the tea why am i talking about a four-year-old's friendship why am i talking about a four-year-old i'm so sorry but anyway that was a thing that happened in 2021 i've been shopping on poshmark for years it's my go-to when i'm searching for a holy grail that sold out on the primary market or everyday essentials that i really just want to pay less than retail for.

1:03:01And yeah, a lot of there's some evidence out there that Aria and her family are Trump supporters, but won't get into that. I don't think it's like particularly relevant to this conversation at the moment, but I think that that is some supporting evidence that they are. she also launches a short-lived podcast in 2021 called in-house with arielle charnas again very short-lived she has on her sisters her husband her friends it's nothing really groundbreaking or candid i feel like she always does have a wall up she never really lets people in is kind of the pattern that i've noticed with her which is fine you have to protect yourself but But I feel like maybe since the scandals that she's had, she's had her guard up even more.
1:03:48But I don't think she's ever had a true, genuine, deep connection, vulnerable connection with her followers. I don't think she's ever been truly, truly vulnerable on Instagram, honestly. I think, again, it's all about rejecting this perfect, polished life. Right. In 2021, she also has her third child named Navy, which people thought was interesting because of her brand, Something Navy, which is, yeah, which we'll see is now crumbled. And in 2022, something Navy from the outside appears to still be doing well. She does, at the same time, post about, I think this is during a Q &A, someone asked her what her hours are, and she posts about working from 10 a.m.
1:04:35to 2 p.m. every day. Which, if you're like a real founder of a brand, and I know she's not claiming to be the CEO, she's a quote-unquote chief creative officer, which in her capacity might be like a completely made-up role that doesn't have a lot of responsibilities. What even is that? I was actually wondering when you first shouted out her title at the company. What the hell is even a chief creative officer? Though I guess that's kind of like what it's one of those nebulous creative director roles. It's just vibes. It's vibes. You're cultivating vibes. And trust me, when you work in the fashion industry or the media industry, you will see that those roles are abundant and you will wonder what those people do all day.
1:05:17Not every time, but frequently when you come across someone with the title creative director. So, yeah, working from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., again, is just, like, not something that her followers react well to. They're kind of like, oh, well, what do you do all day then? Like, you're not actually, like, boots on the ground at your company at all. You don't seem very hands-on, etc. And in late 2022, this is when things in the charnis world explode again. because de Mois posts about something brewing in Charnisland, and theories just abound. Everything from, did Brandon cheat? Are they getting divorced?
1:06:07Did Brandon embezzle money from something Navy? That was kind of like, to the extent of what de Mois posted, it was something insinuating that Brandon embezzled money from something Navy, which turned out to not be true, but there was like a lot happening drama-wise within something maybe. I remember Reddit was absolutely fucked up about this. And everyone was speculating, when is the Business Insider article going to drop? What's actually happening? Are they getting divorced? Is he embezzling money? And again, we soon find out what it actually was, but I remember Reddit was on fire. You could not go to any snark page without seeing Ariel Tarnas being mentioned.
1:06:49It was crazy. Yeah. And like the fact that there was so much interest in an influencer from an account like Demois that usually posts about A-list celebrities, but people were obsessed with this drama. And I think that that's something that Hariel and Brandon have been, you know, kind of become infamous for, is for just having this drama-filled life, it seems like. and people are kind of like obsessed with all of like the mystery and the intrigue around them there have been rumors about brandon cheating for years and this is just alleged like none of it is but you know people are very fascinated by them eventually the article that demois was teasing does come out and business insider drops the article titled arielle charnas's company something Navy is floundering amid dwindling sales and employee exodus and furious suppliers.
1:07:50And it talks about how suppliers who are owed hundreds of thousands of dollars are watching Ariel on Instagram living this extravagant, lavish life. And one India-based supplier who's owed hundreds of thousands talks about how it looks like, and they spoke to Business Insider, the reporter who wrote the article, talks about how it looks like she's having an amazing and awesome time in life while they're struggling because of the missed payments from Something Navy. In conjunction with this, there's also a major employee exodus. That fun office environment with all of her mini-ARiels running around is no more.
1:08:25All the employees have left. And meanwhile, Charnas, despite being the face of Something Navy and its chief creative officer, is increasingly detached from her own business. People say, more often photographed wearing designer pieces like a$2 ,600 Hermes boots and$3 ,900 leather jacket from Kate than clothing from her own brand. Again, this goes back to what we were saying, like, what is the strategy here? When Insider began contacting people for the story in September of 2022, something Navy decided to finally pay its suppliers. It paid off most of its$364 ,000 balance when Insider reached out and let Something Navy know that they were working on this story.
1:09:11And again, there were freelancers and models that haven't been paid. There was a five-year-old model because Something Navy had children's clothes too. A five-year-old model that worked with Something Navy and hadn't been paid for two shoots. They're on the hook for a lot of money and aren't paying. And even something Navy employees, so those mini RELs that a lot of them had been by her side for years, were paid three days late after what management called payroll processing error. Staffers were spooked and they were like, okay, it's only a matter of time until we stop being paid to mass exodus of employees.
1:09:50And this all comes down to the money not being there. Right. Them spending extravagantly on Ariel's huge birthday party that costs over$100 ,000 easily, while sales were extremely, extremely low. They weren't selling product. And again, it's like you have someone, it's kind of like a celebrity makeup brand. Look at Ariana Grande's Rem Beauty, which no one really buys, right? There are so many celebrity makeup brands that I'm always confused on. Gwen Stefani's, Halsey's. Right, right. Lady Gaga's. I actually just bought, I restocked my Selena Gomez Rare Beauty blush the other day. So it's like, you can make people buy something once if you're a celebrity or you have fans, but they'll only keep buying if it's like a good product.
1:10:45Right. I think that was something Navy's Achilles heel also was that the product just wasn't good. It was bad quality and people just weren't coming back to buy it. Unless you're me and you go back to buy it four different times. Unless you're Christy. Oh, my God. No, but that's such a good point. It's this cheap quality. People are interested. They're like, wow, my favorite influencer finally released this clothing brand. It must be great because I idolize her. I idolize her fashion. Proof is in the pudding. bitch. Yeah, that's like, no, again, it's like, that's like Ariana Grande's makeup brand, Rem Beauty, because what people say again and again about her brand is that the quality just isn't there.
1:11:25And that's why it's not a successful celebrity beauty brand, because successful celebrity beauty brands do exist. Rare road house labs. Fenty, rare road house labs. Yeah. Yeah. But then if the quality isn't there, people aren't going to keep buying. Correct. I love this part of the Business Insider story. Three former employees said staffers had to beg her to make good on something Navy's contract with Vivrell, which is a luxury accessory rental company, because she didn't want her followers to think that she rented handbags. Again, it's all about projecting this image that like, why would I rent handbags?
1:12:02Like, I'm richer than you. Why would I rent handbags? You pourers rent handbags. I don't. I can afford Chanel's and Bottegas. So again, it like goes back to Ariel needing to project this image of like being perfect and having this perfect wealthy life with endless money. And it's so funny because even to this day, she'll link things and she'll be like, I know it's an investment, but I get so much wear out of it. And it's a$4 ,900 like leather Kate jacket, for example. Like that's more than some people's paychecks. That is so out of touch. Oh my God. That's more than like most people's rent. Yes.
1:12:42Yes. Like, and it's just like, I think she thrives. I think deep down she knows when she says, I know it's an investment. Like she knows it's not accessible to anyone. But she needs people to know. She knows that no one's going to like buy an affiliate link for a$4 ,900 jacket, but she needs people to know that she can afford it. I was going to say, even from a business perspective, she's not making money on that affiliate link because how many people are actually purchasing that item? One, maybe? if that but it's like it's not about the affiliate money it's about her needing people to know that she can afford that exactly exactly she's making no money there's no money in her pocket it's all about feeding her ego it's just yeah exactly and for many former staffers seeing the lavishness of charnis's lifestyle while her company stiffed contractors and suppliers was more than they could put up with.
1:13:33And yeah, that totally makes sense. In 2023, Brandon Charnas, it comes out, is being investigated by the Department of Justice for potential insider treating and was also allegedly not cooperating. So when, okay, let me make sure I'm getting this right. Staples purchased office depot and i'm like i don't know anything about like stocks or like okay so this is i can explain it only because when i was an auditor we had so many explain it so obviously when you're in the business of let's say mergers and acquisitions or you're part of an audit team you know very privileged confidential information that may not even be available to employees at the actual company.
1:14:23So if you're being bought, there's a huge merger that's impending. Everyone is made aware that you cannot trade. You cannot inform your friends, your family that that merger is about to happen because that could impact this company's stock price. So what happened is Brandon Charnas' friend had insider information whether or not he was at the parent company. he knew that this merger was impending. And he informed his friends who knew about this merger, despite no one else knowing, because it was, again, confidential, sensitive information. And they subsequently decided to buy stock, knowing that the merger was going to occur and the stock would likely increase.
1:15:04It's very, very federally regulated, and it's very against the law. And he made allegedly$385 ,000 in profit. it. And the roots of the investigations date back to just before Christmas 2020, when Charnas met friends for lunch in Miami. More than an hour later, Charnas invested$31 ,000. And I feel like this is just so obvious. Like, he didn't even try to cover his tracks. No. He invested$31 ,000 in Office Depot call options, essentially betting that the stock would rise, according to the SEC. Okay, sorry. So Stables announced it. Okay, so... Yeah, Stables bought Office Depot. i think it's the other way around hold on wait no no no staples bought office depot for six billion dollars okay okay so he bought office depot call options knowing that they were going to be bought out by staples very very very illegal yes and this is like literally finance 101 you cannot do this and it pisses me off because you have in the note in the bullet point below that all the charges have been dropped and nothing's come from it that's crazy to me i Which pisses me off.
1:16:11I know people that have gone busted for much less, for not even intentionally providing insider trading to their spouse. But just, this is crazy that nothing came from it, is what I'm trying to say. In the days following, Tarnas and other traders bought options and shares with the parent company, ODB Corp. According to the regulator, on January 11, 2021, the stock popped after Staples announced its offer. One of the traders texted in a group chat, that you're welcome boys with a z and another one goes you the man not the z boys not the z not the z and boys that's the best part to me but it's like you're not even trying to hide it so yeah the charges were allegedly dropped like i don't know there hasn't been an update on it but that's what everyone is saying i guess the charges were dropped that nothing came from it and also it should be noted that leading up to this being announced in late 2023 people did kind of sense that something was off with arielle that she had been kind of like it always looked like she was puffy and had just been crying and just like she seemed off and i this when this came out it kind of like explained it like your husband is under investigation for insider trading.
1:17:31And if anyone like knows how to like access those, I don't know, what like Nexus Lexus, I don't know. And tell us what the status is if the charges were actually dropped. I don't know. I think they were, but let us know if you know. And to make matters worse for Charnisland, in late 2023, something Navy is sold in a fire sale for$1. dollar and the website somethingnavy.com if you go to it now is it looks like an ai article about the rise and fall of something navy and the brand's instagram account is all but defunct so yeah that one dollar for a brand that was once valued at upwards of like 45 million dollars But yeah, no more something navy.
1:18:25Now in the present day, Arielle seems to be going back to her roots of just posting and linking her outfits while always, of course, sporting big designer labels. Of course, no one loves a Celine sweater with a huge logo on it more than her. Again, this brings me back to influencers and their spending habits. The fact that her husband could be on trial with the Department of Justice for insider trading makes me incredibly nervous that she's spending the exorbitant amounts that she is on Celine sweaters and Chanel bags. Yeah. My ass would not be spending anything if this was the future of my life, if my husband could potentially be put up.
1:19:05Yeah, and it does. And I will note here that it does seem that they've downsized their lives. Right. They've scaled back. I'll admit it. They've scaled back outside of her wardrobe. Like, her insane wardrobe always, which I do think that she sells a lot of things on The Real Real. And her sister is a celebrity stylist, Danielle Goldberg, which could help her get some of these designer goods for less than retail. I don't know. Either way, it does seem like they've downsized... their lives, and their lives used to be like extremely extravagant. Like we were kind of saying, they were just spending and spending and spending.
1:19:44Something to be going out of business and her husband being under investigation by the Department of Justice. You know, money is probably tighter. She no longer has that gaggle of mini Ariel's around her. She has posted that she no longer has an assistant, which I feel like is kind of like the bare minimum for influencers to have an assistant. Instead of renting a house in the Hamptons this summer, which they usually do, they stayed with her in-laws. So yeah, it seems like she's kind of like gone back to her roots. She is low-key though. I'm happy she's at least recognizing that she needs to scale down and is doing so by not renting a huge Hamptons mansion for the summer and at least staying with the in-laws or whatever.
1:20:29That makes me a little bit happier. You know, what's funny is that she would always post about like, oh, eventually we want to buy in the Hamptons, like buy a Hamptons home. And they actually currently rent their New York City apartment, which there's nothing wrong with renting. I know a lot of people decide to rent in the city instead of buying because it's just easier. Like you just don't have to worry about like homeownership and, you know, HOA fees and all of that and like maintenance. So there's nothing wrong with renting in the city. I will say, though, that if if they are looking to buy in the Hamptons, what she is constantly saying that they intend to do eventually, it's like, why are you buying forty nine hundred dollar jackets?
1:21:12Like if you're saving up for a house, then just maybe don't like I don't think you need that. Like, I don't know. But like, I don't think you need a forty nine hundred dollar jacket. it again these spending habits the people's financial decisions if our other financial advisor heavily would tell them no no more 4 ,900 jackets it's just not necessary like you can spend your money on better things i promise you yeah i totally agree so you know she posted that someone during a q a was like what are you doing business-wise now she says this creating content affiliate programs, partnerships, engaging and listening to my audience and genuinely enjoying it at the moment.
1:21:54I finally feel in control again, doing what I want and love. She also launched a sub stack that she hasn't updated in a few months, but she posted, I'm here today because my focus is not to rebuild a clothing brand, but to go back to my grassroots, to go back to where I started, to remember why I started, because that was and is the only time I feel happy doing what I do. Good for her. Hopefully she's making money on those affiliate links, considering she's posting nothing but thousands of dollars of items, but sure. Yeah, so that seems to be, she does have a few brand partnerships here and there.
1:22:26She got her partnership with ShopBot back. She has a few here and there, definitely fewer than she did in her heyday. But what she posts a lot of now is just affiliate links and like to know it and collages. And that seems to be her main source of income. and what she also does on Instagram to this day that I feel kind of conflicted about is just the way that she constantly posts her three daughters in an almost exploitative way and I do wonder this with like big platforms and I'm not a mom yet god willing I will be one day but like so I know I'm not I'm not one to judge because it's like I'm not gonna mom shame I'm not a mom but I do feel like uncomfortable with the fact that so many of these big influencers are so complacent with just like sharing their kids in vulnerable positions she posted a video once of her daughter like doing video therapy posting her daughter doing therapy and just things that I feel like cross a line and I know that they get probably more engagement as messed up as it is there are people that enjoy the kids content in a creepy way and maybe even in a non-creepy way and that's something that I feel like has always made me a little bit uncomfortable with her and also her sister, Michaela, and a lot of other influencers with kids that they know that they get engagement when they post their kids.
1:24:07And I don't know. What do you think about that? I think there's going to be a huge reckoning when it comes to minors being portrayed on social media. And I don't mean high school or minors. I mean, young kids, because it really does exploit them and open them up to CSAM, like child sexual abuse materials. And with AI developing, who knows what these creeps are doing online to take their likeness and put them on some kind of weird AI generated video. I mean, there's just dark, dark sides of the web. And I think influencers like Ariel Charnas are living in this bliss because they're profiting off of them showing this very beautiful picture-perfect family when in fact, who is really actually consuming all this content.
1:24:50So it's very and comfortable if you really think about it. And I think something is going to happen in the future about stuff like this. I don't know what it is. I have no idea. But I think things are going to be brought to the service that are going to make us realize this is actually very harmful. Totally. Totally. And I've even seen comments like on her Instagram, where it's like more, more X content, please X as in like one of her daughters, whether it's Ruby or Esme or Navy, be like requesting more content about a specific daughter. That's nefarious. That is obviously nefarious in my opinion.
1:25:25And I wonder if she even if that even phases her or if she is just like, oh, yeah, give the people what they want. Like, I don't know. It's something that has disturbed me about her platform. She did post recently that she was going to pull back on posting her kids since they're becoming older. Should be the opposite to me, but sure. I'll believe it when I see it. If they're older, are they able to give consent now to be on camera? Either way, I'll believe it when I see it because that's something that she has done for some time now is exploit her kids on Instagram. Again, not to mom shame. It's interesting to me.
1:26:00I don't know how I would act in a scenario where, oh, I have cute kids that I want to share with my followers, but I also have 1.3 million followers. And yeah, like where do you draw the line? I don't know. Like I'm looking at her Instagram right now and I'm finding these photos of her children, right? And you know how Instagram now has that functionality or feature where you can see how many times it's been shared? Yeah. So if I'm looking at just a picture, I just popped up a random picture of her by herself modeling on the street. 115 shares, right? Then I go to a picture of her and her kids, 649 shares.
1:26:44I hate that. And it's, I think that's when it gets a little testy. Why would I send you, Sophie, a picture of her and her three kids? Right. In anything but a non-nefarious, creepy way. I would never think to look at this picture and say, let me actually send this and share this with one of my friends. It's literally, it's not like a grid where there's many photos. It's just her and her three children. Right. In little dresses. So I don't like that at all. And I think the share function is probably going to start creeping a lot of influence out. I would hope so. On Twitter, where you can see how many bookmarks and when someone, a viral post of someone's child will have an insane amount of bookmarks.
1:27:25And then people are like, why? What kind of person is bookmarking this? Correct. Oh, I have chills. Yeah. It's not great. Not great. It's not. And I don't know. It's just that's something that like I wonder how I will navigate when God willing I have children. Like, I don't know. Because, again, it's like part of you wants to share those parts of your life and your adorable like photos of your kids. But then, you know, you want to protect them. And I think it's different when you're a normie. I mean, you're less normie because you actually do have a following. But it's different if you're just an individual that's sharing their kids with friends and family and your only followers.
1:28:06And your private account. and your private account, correct. But if you're an influencer with 1.3 million followers, you are sharing your children with 1.3 million people. That's scary to me. Right. And to her credit, she seems like a great mom. She does seem like a great, she seems like very hands-on with her kids, but it seems like she genuinely enjoys being a mom. So I'll give her that. And also just while we're on the topic of her 1.3 million followers, at the top of the episode, we mentioned how she hit 1 million in 2017. And now it's 2024. And she has only gained 300K since then. It seems like she's, yeah, she went through this period of like insane growth.
1:28:50And now it seems like she's kind of plateaued, which she posts about not really, she has posted before about not really caring about numbers. And she just wants to nurture the current audience that she has, those longtime followers, because so many of her followers have been there since she was pregnant with her first child, since she was getting married in 2014 10 years ago. So, yeah, I mean, I just think that's interesting. I think that's interesting that hitting 1 million followers in 2017 to only being at 1.3 in 2024. In July 2024, we mentioned Brandon's first cousin, Candace. I believe Candace's mom and Brandon's mom are sisters.
1:29:34And her Instagram handle was Mama and Tata. Candace Miller, she's no longer on Instagram. She's also best friends with Ariel. So they're family, friends, just do everything together. Their kids are always together. She became a widow when her husband tragically killed himself via carbon monoxide poisoning in the garage of their Hampton's home while Candace and their two daughters were on vacation in Europe. and it turns out that he was millions of dollars in debt. It's actually upwards of like$17 million. You know, since this has come out, I think it's safe to say that Candace was kind of like living beyond her means.
1:30:21She was presenting this incredibly extravagant lifestyle on Instagram between the outfits, Tribeca Penthouse, Hampton's Home, insane parties for her daughters. And you would have never guessed that they were so in the hole, this amount of debt. And to be Ariel Charnas, who is so close to this family, I mean, their family, it's, I'm sure it hit incredibly close to home for her. And it's very, very incredibly tragic. And I think, like you just mentioned, And we're seeing the curtain lift on these influencers' lifestyles. And she had a seemingly very expensive lifestyle, very wealthy. When in fact, her husband was in upwards of$17 million in debt.
1:31:15How do you even get that high up into debt? And I guess when I was reading into this suicide, it sounds like he was expecting this business deal to pull through to get him out of this hole. and I guess the business deal didn't end up pulling through which kind of I think was maybe the catalyst in this happening which is so tragic and so sad. But yeah, he left her with a lot of debt, the wife. Now I was reading this random article and it looks like she has four months of unpaid rent. I mean, they were paying almost$25 ,000 in rent a month per person that was$17 million in debt. It's just crazy and unfathomable.
1:31:55Crazy. Crazy. I would expect it to almost be more than that. Yeah, that sounds low. That sounds low for them in the way that they appeared to be living. And, you know, now she's on the hook and getting sued for his unpaid debts. And it's all very sad and very tragic. and you know i feel for their family for the charnis family who you know was extremely close with with him brandon miller was his name and yeah it's all very tragic i think it just it goes to show again that like nothing is ever as it seems yes on instagram because you would never guess even like in earlier this year she was in the new york times talking about a weekly facial that she got that was eight hundred dollars a weekly a weekly facial first of all don't you don't need that many facials like you really don't that's like damaging to your skin yeah like leave your skin alone but eight hundred dollars a week just on you know getting a facial so it's like this kind of just extravagant lifestyle that she was presenting when on you know behind the scenes this was going on.
1:33:09It's just, you never know. Keep that in mind as you're scrolling, you're doom scrolling late at night, wondering why don't I have enough money? Why am I so poor? Why can't I go on some traffic implications? Why can't I throw my kid this type of birthday party? You're better off living within your means than being$17 million in debt. Yeah. And even if you, again, you look at these people and you're like, oh my God, what I would do with this amount of money, what I would buy, like just having and and i have to remind myself of this too having like health i know it sounds so cheesy but it's like having my health having loved ones like it's so much more valuable than anything money can buy and you know i'm sure that candace wishes that she could go back in time and and actually live within her means and then still have her husband and the father of her kids.
1:34:09You know, it's like, it's just, it's not worth it. And I don't know, I guess. Yeah. Just don't believe what you see on Instagram, I guess, is the moral of the story. And I know that we kind of ended this on a dark note, but there's a lot of intrigue when it comes to the Charnis cinematic universe. I can't believe we squeezed all of this into one episode. I really thought we were going to have to do two parts, but there's probably stuff that we missed. You know, I feel like you were incredibly detailed in your research and you definitely hit the most controversial parts, the COVID scandal and I think Brandon Charnas' investigation and the weirdness surrounding him, the trolling.
1:34:58I learned a lot. There was a lot of things in this outline that I did not know. And I'm glad that we went over them. Happy New Year, baby snarks!!! We’re back to our regularly scheduled programming but in the meantime, please enjoy one of our favorite throwback episodes of all time. What better way to kick off 2026 than with some good ol’ fashioned snark?!
Before Instagram, fashion bloggers were IT—and Arielle Charnas (known at the time as her blog name “Something Navy”) was one of the first. Soon, she became one of the biggest and most successful content creators on the internet… but in a little over a decade, it all came crashing down. In this much-requested episode, Christy and Sophie sink their teeth into the trials and tribulations of the now-infamous influencer (and her extended cinematic universe), Arielle Charnas.
