In short
The Snarkbait hosts discuss Dax Shepard’s life and career, focusing on his childhood trauma, addiction and sobriety, Armchair Expert’s interview style, and major controversies around his humor and guest handling.
Guest backgrounds
The episode has two hosts, Sophie and Christy (“Snarkbait”); they reference their own research and prior listening to Armchair Expert (Christy listened to an episode with Kristen Bell and Justine Lupe).
Key claims
Shepard was sexually abused at age 7 and later struggled with addiction; he has been sober since Sept 2004 with relapses tied to injuries and painkiller access. His film directing is portrayed as vanity-driven and frequently criticized for offensive humor and self-casting. Armchair Expert is described as lucrative and influential, but also as sometimes patronizing/interruptive, with backlash for how he debates marginalized guests (notably trans rights).
Notable examples
Punk’d (his start); “My Father’s Horniness” post; Mila Kunis/Ashton Kutcher bath-time “waiting for stink”; Brett Weinstein episode not pulled; “measletov” tweet; Jonathan Van Ness trans-rights debate; Cynthia Erivo toilet-wiping question; Brad Pitt/AA anonymity issue; Eric Dane fistfight story.

1:24Only in theaters May 15th. With special engagements in Dolby. Hey, everybody. Welcome back to Snarkbait. I'm Sophie. I'm Christy. And today, we are talking about the one and only Dex Shepard. Low-key, one of my favorite members of the Punk'd series. I actually forgot that he got his start on Punk'd until I was researching this episode. I can't wait to get into it. Totally forgot about that. Yeah. Can't wait to dive in. But first of all, how are you doing? How am I doing? I'm doing okay. we tomorrow's our live show that's crazy like what what the hell are we how are we already first of all it's been a year and a half of snark bait a little under or over give or take a couple months yeah a little over a year and a half so wild yeah and i can't believe it's already here we got tapped to do live shows like i want to say six months ago i don't remember it was like just, no, it was before December.
2:22It was last fall. Yeah. And I just can't believe it's already here. We're going to be in Santa Monica at the Illusion Magic Lounge. And I don't know, I feel like I'm not nervous because we've just been preparing for so many things related to the trip and the show. But I don't know, are you nervous? I've never been on stage in front of all these people. I don't feel nervous. I know I will be nervous at some point, I'm sure. But I don't feel nervous. I just feel excited. So if you are in Southern California and you have no plans tomorrow, hopefully there's still tickets left. Baby Snark 25 for 25 % off and you can have a last minute fun night with us.
2:59We are so excited. It's going to be so much fun. So yeah, I mean, we're recording right now on a week ahead. It's Thursday, May 7th. So I am just trying to get my ducks in a row. And there has just been a lot of moving parts, a lot going on. But yeah, I am so excited to be with the team and see everyone and see the baby snarks. It's going to be a time. It's going to be a movie. I'm really excited to meet your mom and to meet Henry finally after like years of... I know you guys already like talk all the time, but like now you're going to like meet him in the flash. Yeah, I get to meet your mom.
3:35You get to be my mom. I know. Oh, Nance and Amy. Nance and Amy. The actual mother snark. And a bunch of my friends from like out of town are coming in. And I'm just very, very excited. It's like it's very meaningful when people take time out of their busy weekends to like fly out or hire sitters. It's just like very heartwarming. And that goes for also the listeners of the show that don't know us personally. It's just we know this is a lot of time out of your day and like mental gymnastics to schedule. and I went childcare and all that. So we just, we're really grateful. I'm really grateful. So thank you.
4:11Yes, we very much appreciate it. And we're so excited. But yeah, I feel like that has been consuming me. So other than that, I feel like life as usual. Yeah, it's just, it's simply life as usual. By the way, did you ever, did you find out an outfit? Did you figure out the outfit? No, I still don't know what I'm wearing, you guys. I ordered a couple more options that should be arriving within the next few days. One of them, I think I would need to get tailored. So if I do end up choosing that one, I'm going to be in a time crunch to get it tailored. So I don't know. Stay tuned. This is a big question mark.
4:42Christy has had her outfit picked out for a few weeks now. But yeah, I am the type B person that I am waiting until the 11th hour. So I'm still I'm still lolling at you going, you know, I sent it to the group and no responses yet. No responses. And then Olivia was like listening to the episode and then she didn't even acknowledge that I said that. But she wasn't like, Sophie, oh my God, I forgot to respond. I really do like the dress. She just ignored it. So I think that's a confirmation that Olivia and Rachel don't like that dress, which is fair, which is fair. I thought it was beautiful. I think I'm going to keep it.
5:19I returned a couple other options that I ordered and didn't like, but I think I'm going to keep this one just to have because it is cute. I feel like once we're done, I will share with the baby Starks what this dress looks like and you guys can let me know. Yeah, we'll put it on our stories also. I was like, do you and I just egg each other on? Because I'm the one that sent you that initial dress I was going to wear. And my best friend goes, is that a boat neck? What the hell are you doing? She goes, silk? You can't wear that. I was like, oh my gosh. She goes, it's going to make your arms. Anyway, I have insecurities about certain parts of my body.
5:49But she was like, you can't wear that. And I was like, me and Sophie might just like think each other is just fabulous. And we're like, yeah, that looks going to look great. But you sent it to me on the hanger. And I was like, yeah, that looks cute. It was like a little boat neck mini dress. I was like, yeah, that looks cute. Nothing about it. jumped out at me. And you know that I will not, like, I will tell you if I don't like something fashion-wise. No, I appreciate that. I appreciate that. I'm not afraid to let you know. But it was literally on the hanger. It wasn't on your body. So I was like, yeah, this looks like a nice dress.
6:19Totally. So yeah, TBD, what I will end up wearing, you guys. Maybe you're a fashionista. You'll look great with whatever you choose. Hopefully I figure it out and get my shit together. Obviously down to the wire. But OK, let's get into it. Dax Shepard. Christy, what are your top line thoughts on Dax Shepard? Listen, listen. OK, I know he has scandal. OK. And I admittedly, I'm I'm anxious to go through this document because I don't know too much about a scandal. I used to listen to Armchair Expert off and on. And he's had some really amazing guests. Yeah. Like maybe three years ago. You know, I haven't listened in years.
6:56I had no idea. Yeah. And I think he does a really good job of making his guests feel really comfortable. And I think I appreciate how vulnerable and honest he is about his struggles. I'm sure we'll get into it in the document, but he was molested as a child. He struggled with addiction. He's been very open about his relapsing over the last couple of years and how Kristen and Monica, his co-hosts, were super open about, listen, we know you're using, just be honest. I like that he is an open book when it comes to his life and it makes people feel disarmed when they're in that chair across from him on the podcast.
7:29I know that there's a lot of controversy surrounding him and Kristen's marriage and the way that he maybe is towards Kristen, how controversial he is. So I appreciate him for his transparency about his life and his struggles. Beyond that, I don't know too much. So just with the slice of him that I know, I appreciate him. But I know that when I say that, people have a really adverse reaction to it. Yeah, no, he definitely has his fair share of controversies, facepalm moments. And I have never listened to Armchair Expert until I was doing research for this episode. I listened to one episode. That's all I could.
8:04All I could stomach. Which one was it? It was actually with Kristen Bell and Justine Loop. I think her name is from Nobody Wants This. That's the girl who plays her sister in Nobody Wants This. And I love that show. So it was with his wife. So it also was an interesting, like, hearing their dynamic, you know? Yeah. um but what's funny is that i did not realize that he had a co-host named monica he has a co-host of the podcast she is not as involved in like the interview portion uh she does i guess like fact checking quote unquote at the end of the episode and then also books guests and edits episodes and like basically does all the heavy lifting then dax is like the face of the show yeah because he literally is the face when you look at the artwork of the show and it's this is dac shepherd's show.
8:50Like you don't realize that there actually is a woman that is behind the scenes with him too. And, you know, co-hosting with him on many occasion. So that was an interesting factoid that I learned. But as I was scrolling and like looking for episodes to listen to, I'm curious what the Baby Snarks think about this. I was like, I'm not interested in this guest. I don't care about this person. And I wonder if Baby Snarks, do you listen to episodes of Snarkbait based on who the person is because like yeah I mean I would assume so because that's like when I was scrolling through I was like I really don't care about this person right it took me a while to find an interview that I cared about um so yeah I also am curious if what what do armchair expert fans call themselves I think it's like uh cherries or something do we have any baby snarks that are cherries let us know yeah I could be watching that but yeah I the I remember listening to his one episode about how he talked about how he recently relapsed and how Monica had to confront him and was like, I know you're using, stop messing around and stop lying to me.
9:54And he was like, this is why I relapsed. This is the thoughts leading up to it. So I was like, wow, he's so vulnerable and honest. But yeah, I'm curious to hear a lot about it because he's also dated a lot of celebs too in Hollywood. I think a lot of the kind of backlash, I mean, a lot of it is because of the locker room humor and like problematic things that he says, but also a lot of it is kind of like everything I know about Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell is against my will. Like they are both such oversharers. He is such an oversharer. And a lot of people love that. Like you said, like he's very vulnerable and he's very open, but a lot of people are like, okay, let's leave some mystery.
10:30Like we don't need to know that you guys don't bathe your children until they smell. We don't need to know that Kristen does yoga naked, like in the backyard with socks on. Like, there are just things that are maybe should be kept private. But yeah, let's get into it. So Dax Randall Shepard was born January 2nd, 1975. So he's 51. He is from Ypsilanti, Michigan, originally. Definitely pronouncing that wrong. Don't yell at me. We're going to have all the Michigan people yelling at me. Just like, what was the town in Canada that we mispronounced? And everyone was so bad. Was it a Patreon episode when we about the girls that went missing in Thailand?
11:08No, it was like one of our main episodes. And we were talking about someone from Canada, and we were talking about Canada, and completely botched the pronunciation. Added to the list. I mean, we need a list of things that we said correct. Added to the list of things that we mispronounced. Yeah. Sorry. Sorry. Okay. So he graduated from UCLA, and today he is actor, comedian, and filmmaker, podcaster, mostly podcaster. We will get into the fact that his Hollywood career has not been the biggest success. And I think that there might be some underlying resentment of his wife there, but we will get to that.
11:46She's Frozen, right? Oh, yeah. She is. Elsa or Anna and Frozen. Yeah, she is. His podcast makes over$10 million a year, but she is the real breadwinner between frozen and like just her acting career in general she is very successful obviously and um i think that there might be some resentment there especially because i think dak didn't set out to become a podcaster you know like he wanted to be an actor and comedian who sets out to be a podcaster you know like who does that no i know it was such a who does that seriously it's so embarrassing to want to be a podcaster no i'm just kidding you guys that's like there's some respect on the industry i feel did you see that apple has video podcasts now i don't use apple podcasts i hate that apple podcast is my dark energy object like of my life like i don't like i never open that app it always crashes i think it's like so the ux is terrible that's why i'm a spotify girly i'm an apple podcast girl really yeah shocking shocking but that's why you're always reading our reviews and i'm like i never read our reviews i'm sorry i don't open that app yeah i what i what was i gonna say i just have to say about dex shepherd the first other thing i wanted to point out at the top of the episode is another work of his body of work that he's been engaged in without a paddle with steph yeah no we will get to that don't jump don't jump ahead i love that movie sorry me too out of paddle don't Yes, justice.
13:14I'm leading this episode. You just sit back and let me take the reins. Sit back and relax. Okay. Sit back, relax, drink your coffee. Yep. Okay, so Dax is the son of Laura, who worked at General Motors, and David, who was a car salesman. And his parents divorced when he was three, and he has talked about his dad being a womanizer. Growing up, he wrote on his Tumblr at one point that his dad was an addict who was absent for most of his son's childhood. So it might be that addiction runs in his family. And his dad died in 2012 of small cell lung carcinoma at 62. Dax wrote a now infamous post titled My Father's Horniness, describing him flirting with nurses on his deathbed.
13:55Ew. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. So he was raised in Detroit. It was like a Detroit area. Ypsilanti, however you pronounce it. And he actually is distantly related to George Washington on his mother's side of the family. Very interesting. Did you know that? No. That's so quite American of him. Yeah. So he's an OG American. Yeah. His mother worked her way up from a midnight shift janitor at GM into running four shops. And she married four times. He had three stepfathers. Four times. Yeah. Wow. So that also is, I'm sure, something that influenced him a lot. Also, like, maybe, like, a love addiction or... Yeah.
14:34Yeah. So he has an older brother and a half-sister. and he has cast both of them in his filmmaking projects, which might be why some of them have a 0 % of Rotten Tomatoes. I would probably love it. And you probably would love it. And I probably would do the same thing. And you probably would do the same thing, too. I would cast my sister. I'd be like, yeah, Amanda, get in here. Yeah, I'm like, I don't have to pay you, right? Yeah, Audrey. Yeah, I don't have to pay you for free, right? Yeah. Monroe, Baby Monroe and Baby Miles are like, we're like, we're your child actors, but we're going to keep you on set until 1 a.m., okay?
15:07Yeah, there's no labor laws when it comes to Monroe and Miles. No labor laws when it comes to family. Yeah. He graduated high school in 1993, attended Santa Monica College and West LA College, and then eventually transferred to UCLA, where he graduated magna cum laude in anthropology. Okay, anthropologist. Not the magna cum laude. I mean, I don't want to stereotype, but I didn't see him as that bright. But good for him. No, not at all. Not to stereotype. But yeah, no, never would have guessed. He trained at an LA improv comedy troupe for five years called The Groundlings. And he ended up in a group that included Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer, obviously huge names, Fortune Feimster.
15:45And I had to look up who Fortune was. And Fortune is a huge comedian who actually was just a guest judge on Top Chef. So as you guys know, huge Top Chef head over here, Tate Taylor and Nat Faxon. And like you had mentioned, he was sexually abused at age seven and didn't tell anyone for over a decade. and apparently it was an 18-year-old neighbor of his who sexually abused him. And he says that this was probably the underlying cause of his addiction. He told Playboy in 2012 that, I just love to get fucked up drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything. Mostly my love was Jack Daniels and cocaine.
16:21I lived for going down the rabbit hole of meeting weird people. He said from age 18 to 29, he was a heavy smoker, heavy drinker, drug addict, terrible eater, and philanderer. uh so let's talk about his career acting career particular uh low-key kind of a flop actor um he was auditioning for years and years and years and wasn't getting much work until he auditioned for punked and then was cast in this uh in 2003 and like i said i totally forgot this is where he got his start i loved punk did you love punked oh my gosh i was interestingly enough that you bring this up when i was on tiktok the other day the usher episode of punked oh my god it's Remind me what that what that prank was.
17:02It was his little brother. And they were at like Bloomingdale's or something. And the store manager comes up to him and he goes, you know, your brother stole some merchandise. And Usher goes, no, he didn't. Like, show me the show me the footage. And then, you know, his brother stuffing shit into his bag. And the manager goes, you know, I think we can strike a deal, Usher. You can perform at our mall concert. And these are the lyrics I want you to write. And then Usher goes, I prefer you just press charges. I don't really want to do that. It's so funny. I need to go back. Is performing anywhere?
17:30I'm going to look it up. I would. It was BJ Novak. And I was crying. And he's like, I mean, can I just pay you for the merchandise and we can leave? Unfortunately, no. You're going to have to sing. Stop. In order for us to drop the charges. No, it's so funny. I'll have to send it to you. You could buy Punk'd. Oh, my God. And Amazon Prime. Then, though, me. Let's split it. You could. I think that we should, like, buy it and watch it next week when we're together. So, wait. The screen grab on Amazon Prime that's, like, Punk'd. Like, buy an episode for$199. And it's the Justin Timberlake where he's like about to cry.
18:01You took my dog? Did you remember my fiance put the star on the tree and the tree fell? Oh my God, you guys. That show was so fucking funny. You're unlocking so many. There was like an Ashley Simpson episode too. I'm shocked I don't know that one because you guys know I love Ashley Simpson. I might be making that up. Punked episode. Like there was definitely an Ashley. I mean, everyone was. Oh my God. Oh yeah. She visits an art gallery and the prank involved an art gallery where her jacket supposedly started a fire, setting off sprinklers and destroying all of his artwork. Do you remember that?
18:33No, I don't. I need to re-watch that. Guys. Or watch that. So anyway, he was on Punk'd, and this is where he got his start, which, again, I totally forgot that he was part of that. But he became friends with Ashton Kutcher through the show, who helped him get an agent. And a film career of sorts followed, but these movies weren't very good. But like you said, Justice for Without a Paddle. I saw that in theaters. Without a Paddle was one movie we agree on. Like, that was such a good movie. It has a 15 % on Rotten Tomatoes. That must be wrong. That has to be wrong. One reviewer wrote that the bear puts in the best performance.
19:09How dare they? Seth Green, Matthew Lillard, and Dax Shepard. I just remember when they were like, we need to keep each other warm by, like, snuggling together, cuddling one another. You know what? Like, we used to be a proper country where Seth Green was in comedies all the time. Like what happened to Seth Green? Austin Powers? Austin Powers, one of my favorite movie franchises of all time. No, 100%. I was just talking about Seth Green with friends of mine. You're totally right. He was in every movie. Yeah. Like what happened to that? You guys, someone's going to be like he got canceled for something.
19:43I don't know. Maybe we need a Seth Green episode. But I, to my knowledge, I did not know if he got canceled. I don't think he has been. In my eyes, he's an unproblematic king. All he does is just produce Oscar-worthy movie after Oscar-worthy movie. My entire family, my parents, my cousins, we can all recite every single Austin Powers. I saw Goldmember in theaters. No, and like, thinking back, Austin Powers is like so stupid, but like, that used to be a revolutionary franchise. Oh my god, it like, hypothetically should be bad, but it's like an amazing franchise. eyes and the fact that mike myers played uh fat bastard bastard austin powers and dr evil i mean come on the range and goldfinger i don't remember that he played goldfinger and then remember beyonce was in goldfinger of course speaking of beyonce oh my god that's also like maybe that a movie night that we do with our patrons because what a fucking it's never on netflix by the way I don't know where I can stream it.
20:43Excuse me. Bless you. Thank you. Austin Powers streaming. We are so, like, not on track. I know. We'll never get this episode done. Austin Powers streaming. It's only for rent, so. I mean, then we'll be renting it. We will be renting. I will be paying. Yes. Oh, my God. What a fucking classic. Okay. Anyway. I'd pay$20 to see that movie right now. Oh, my God. I'm just sneezing. Excuse me. I couldn't hit my mute button in time. Sorry. He also was in a movie called Employee of the Month in 2006. Wasn't Jessica Simpson in that? Was she? That sounds familiar, actually. Or maybe I'm thinking of... Yes, she was.
21:21Good memory. That was in 2006. That debuted with a 20 % of Rotten Tomatoes. Then Let's Go to Prison in 2006. Debuted with 13 % of Rotten Tomatoes. Critics called its 84-minute runtime a five-year sentence with no chance for parole, which is funny but mean. Then he started directing, which got even worse for him. So he wrote and directed three films that should have ended his career, honestly. Brothers Justice in 2010, it was like a mockumentary about himself, like starring himself. And it got a 0 % in Rotten Tomatoes. And if you remember James Kennedy talking about Rand's movie, 0 % in Rotten Tomatoes is hard to get.
21:59Yeah. So he directed a movie called Brothers Justice 2010, which debuted with a 0 % on Rotten Tomatoes. It was like a mockumentary starring himself. And if you remember James Kennedy on Vanderbilt Rules talking about Rand's movie, 0 % on Rotten Tomatoes is very hard to achieve. Wasn't it gaudy? Did I make that up with John Travolta? Yes, with John Twigod. Then there was Hit and Run in 2012, which debuted at 49%. Critics described it as a vanity vehicle for its co-director, writer, and star, a.k.a. Dax, trafficking in jokes about racism, sexism, and homophobia. Also, Brothers Justice was criticized for having homophobic slurs also.
22:41And in Hit and Run, he cast his wife, his half-sister, his best friend, Bradley Cooper, which, best friends with Bradley Cooper. Then there was Chips in 2017, had a 17 % in Rotten Tomatoes, and it lost studio approximately$14.6 million because it was such a flaw. Oh, yikes. I mean, I haven't heard of any of these movies, honestly. No. RogerEbert.com called it a film about overcompensating characters made by overcompensating comedians, often devolving into the same chauvinism and homophobia that star writer-director Dax Shepard half-heartedly mocked. So he is someone that clearly likes to cast himself in movies, constantly casting himself in projects, and also has this really offensive sense of humor that just is gross.
23:27So his TV work fared a little bit better. He was on NBC's Parenthood from 2010 to 2015, and this is considered his best work. He was also in a show called Bless This Mess, which was canceled. called Top Gear America, which was panned. And this was a reboot of a British automotive series. Like, okay, who watches that? Parenthood, I've heard is incredibly good. Yes. Parenthood, I've heard is really good. I've never watched it. It's with Lauren Graham as well from Gilmore Girls, but I've heard like rave reviews about that show. Yeah. So yeah, his TV work fared a little bit better. But like I said, like his directing work, He writes himself as the lead.
24:10He casts his family members. He is shirtless throughout. It feels like a vanity project. It's not good. He structures the plot around living out his own weird fantasies. And then also has extremely disgusting offensive humor. So it's no wonder that his filmmaking career never really panned out. The way you're describing him kind of reminds me of like a Sam Levinson. Not that Sam Levinson casts himself, but it's just like his own fantasies played out on screen. Yes, that's, yeah. And Sam Levinson, you guys, is the writer slash director behind Euphoria. We've got to do an episode on Sam Levinson.
24:47Yeah, it's gross. Like all of the exploitative, like there are so many gratuitous scenes in Euphoria where I'm like, this was not necessary. Like this was like, what does this add to the plot? Nothing. This is literally just, and same with, you know what, even though I love Ryan Murphy, a lot of Ryan Murphy's work feels the same way, where it's like you are just trying to live out your fantasies in some way with these, you know, actors that you cast. You guys know I like to have a good time, and Cheers has genuinely changed my relationship with going out. I feel like once you hit your 30s, even if you're just having a completely normal night, like a couple of glasses of wine at dinner, a friend's birthday, whatever, the next morning just hits differently.
25:28even if I think I'm doing everything right. Baby snarks in their 30s and above, I know you know what I'm talking about. And what I didn't realize until recently is that it's not just dehydration. Alcohol actually affects your brain and your liver, which is why you can feel off even if you drank responsibly and did everything quote unquote right. This is why I'm so happy I discovered Cheers Restore. They're capsules you take after your last drink or before bed, and the ingredients support both your brain and your liver. I personally keep them on my nightstand So if I go to dinner, have cocktails with friends, or just have a random Tuesday night glass of wine, I take them and actually feel like myself the next day.
26:04And this isn't just some random internet product. Cheers was originally developed by Princeton Student, was featured on Shark Tank, and has sold over 50 million doses, which makes sense because it actually works. 26:37Even though I spend a lot of time on the internet, with my house being renovated, all I want to do lately is be outside. Whether it's strolling on the beach or walking Hank. And of course, I feel like I kind of need a new wardrobe for my new outdoorsy persona without having to break the bank. That's why I love Fabletics. I joined Fabletics as a VIP and it's completely changed how I shop. I actually recently ordered the Principal built-in broad tank in the shade almond milk and I paired it with the same matching set for the leggings. It's called the Oasis Pure Lux high-waisted legging in that same color.
27:06It is honestly so stretchy, makes my boobs look perky, and is one of my favorite sets that I own today. I actually was at Le Gris the other day and someone was like, wait, that's such a cute matching set. And I was like, thanks, it's Fabletics. Being a Fabletics VIP means I get 70 to 80 % off everything. It's so easy to grab new, high-quality activewear sets and loungewear without overthinking or overpaying. And is there anything that makes getting dressed easier than a matching set? Don't even have to think about it. Also, for all of our healthcare provider baby snarks, Fabletics has scrubs too.

29:06Okay, let's get into Armchair Expert. Obviously, the biggest hit of his career, his podcast. So Armchair Expert was launched February 14th, 2018 with co-host Monica Padman, recorded in his Los Feliz attic. And Monica is a friend of theirs. And this idea evolved from Monica and Dax's habit of debating ideas on the back porch of Kristen at Dax's home. It focuses on in-depth conversations about guest's upbringings, challenges, and successes. Monica edits each episode. She books the guests. She does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work. And he has gotten backlash before for being kind of patronizing and interrupting her, even though she, again, does all the fucking grunt work of the podcast.
29:51I feel like there's like a little bit of misogyny in there, if I had to guess, by the way, that he treats both Monica, from what I've read, and also his wife. Featured guests on the show have included a bunch of nobodies like Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Ashton Kutcher, Will Ferrell, Julia Louise Dreyfuss, hundreds of others. Armchair Expert became the most downloaded new podcast of 2018 on iTunes. By 2020, Forbes ranked it the number four highest earning podcast in America at roughly $9 million annual revenue with 20 million monthly listeners. And that was in 2020. So you can only imagine how much more money they're making now.
30:26In May 2021, he signed an exclusive Spotify deal. And in July 2024, he announced an$80 million deal with Wondery and Amazon, including back catalog rights, video episodes, inclusive merge, first look on future shows, etc. So let's talk about some of the armchair expert controversies. In 2019, Brett Weinstein was a guest on the show, and he was a quote unquote expert. This was before he became one of the most prominent purveyors of ivermectin disinformation and was demonetized by YouTube in 2021. So this is before he was spreading COVID misinformation, but the episode was never pulled or disclaimed or it was just left up and people took issue with that.
31:08And then there was the hashtag measletov tweet in June 2019. He tweeted, this is Dax. I would have a hard time keeping my opinion to myself if someone was telling me they're eight month old, do not need a car seat. The same hard time I'm having currently with anti-vaxxer. Hashtag you're not a pediatrician. Hashtag measletov. And some online Jewish people called it anti-Semitic for kind of echoing the Jews spread disease trope. Because like, why measletov? Why is that the hashtag that you're using? It's completely irrelevant to what the point you're trying to prove. Exactly. Like Jewish publications said that, you know, this hashtag made them deeply uncomfortable.
31:44Because that is a longstanding anti-Semitic trope. Sure, yeah. Um, so in 2021, there was a Prince Harry episode and he had Prince Harry on the pod. Big deal. Prince Harry called the First Amendment bonkers and slammed Joe Rogan and Dax Shepard famously defended Joe Rogan. And a lot of people also took issue with that. And I think that like, if you are a podcaster, you are always going to like, you're obviously going to have not to defend him at all but you're obviously going to have moments where you have opinions that not everyone agrees with um i think in this case it is not surprising at all that he defends joe rogan like i feel like him and joe rogan have a lot in common oh they're they're old friends i feel like yeah and also i feel like i'm not defending him i'm just saying that sometimes it is refreshing just in general to have an interviewer go against the interviewee i'm just thinking of Alex Cooper, for instance.
32:39Alex Cooper? Exactly. Mm-hmm. I mean, I'm not saying I agree with... Yeah, defending Joe Rogan. You guys, we did a whole episode on Joe Rogan. He's the worst. Right. But yeah, I get what you're saying, that like Alex Cooper is just like, yeah, oh my God, upset. Yes. So at least you like to see some kind of like... Pushback. Rhetoric and pushback, yeah, about the conversation. But yeah, I mean, does this surprise me? Zero percent. Yeah, and like the fact that his listeners like there were people that were surprised and angry at that is is surprising to me sure because i feel like that's very like that seems on brand for him um and then there's the famous mila kunis and ashton kutcher bath time episode in 2021 um they don't have good hygiene habits it turns out none of them do so ashton kutcher said i wash my armpits my crotch daily nothing else ever mila said i wash pits and tits and holes and soles so nothing else um dax agreed and revealed they hadn't washed their daughters in years, basically saying they waited for them to smell dirty before washing them, which is disgusting and also negligent parenting, in my opinion.
33:49Kristen Bell also told The View later that year, I'm a big fan of waiting for the stink. Once you catch a whiff, that's biology's way of letting you know you need to clean it up. No. How about you don't wait until you smell to bathe? Like that? Yeah. It just doesn't really seem sensical, but also what is their defense? Sensical. Sensical. Yeah. Like, is it sensible? Yeah. Like, it doesn't, what is her argument? Is it because, because you know, some holistic people are like, you know, the body produces natural oils or whatever. Like, I'm not really in that space. Natural pheromones. Like Shailene Woodley, who like makes her own soap.
34:24Yeah. What is their defense for this? Because it just seems like they're just saying, oh, we just don't wash our kids until they stink. But why? Can they offer some reasoning behind that? I'm sure they would say, well, like, you just like, Like, you know, it's not necessary. And like, you don't want to like, like a lot of people are like, oh, you shouldn't strip your natural oils, you know? Like, I don't personally agree with that. I understand, you know, if someone is like, you know what? Like, I, if I'm not working out that day, if I don't get sweaty that day, I don't need to shower every day.
34:53You know, like maybe every other day I shower on my workout days. That is not me personally. I'm a shower a day, girly, whether or not I get sweaty or not. Oh, absolutely. I get it. I also think it's because I live in New York, so I always feel, like, dirty when I get home. Like, I feel grimy, so I always get in the shower before I get into bed. That's just me. But there are some people that, like, are like, you know what? Every other day. Good for them, not for me, though. I completely am with you. I need to shower daily. Otherwise, I can't go to bed happy. I don't wait until the stink. Like, before you even stink, don't you feel gross?
35:27Like, you feel gross. Yeah. Yeah. Psychologically, too. I'm like, ugh. Yeah. Yeah. Like, I feel like greasy. I feel gross. And also like their daughters. Like, I feel like that's just think about kids playing around like they play in the playgrounds and they're in the dirt. Like they don't need to stink to need a bath. Right. Anyway, it's basic hygiene. Just period. Basic. Yeah. Basic hygiene. Exactly. So one of the biggest controversies with Armchair Expert was the Jonathan Van Ness episode. So JVN is non-binary, and there are so many stories about JVN, you know, from people that have worked on Queer Eye, so that's a whole other thing.
36:07I feel like JVN has been on my list to do an episode about for so long, but fully on JVN's side in all of this, obviously. So while having JVN on the podcast, Dax pivoted into a 20-minute trans rights debate saying, Some people are very uncomfortable about teenagers transitioning. How do we know that the person's not going to change their mind? Will I elevate her rights over women? We're pretending that women aren't the ultimate marginalized class throughout history. JVN was saying, I feel like I'm talking to my dad. I could just cry because I'm so tired of having to fight for little kids because they just want to be included.
36:42I have to tell you, I'm very tired. And a lot of publications slammed this interview. HuffPost, BuzzFeed, GLAAD, and The Daily Beast, which asked, has the day finally come where we all collectively agree that Dax Shepard is a freaking moronic asshole? JVN later told Kiki Palmer on her podcast that significant pieces of the conversation had been edited out without their approval and that they almost got up and left twice. Oh, no, that's really sad. You don't feel safe in an environment where you're just wanting to have an open conversation about you. And it's like, it gets to the point where it's like, why are people even going on this podcast?
37:13Like there is like, like you said, like there's something to be said about a podcast host that interviews celebrities and pushes back on them because it's like the antithesis of Alex Hooper, for instance. But when you're like insulting them and arguing about their rights as a human being, that like crosses the line, obviously. This pushback is not what I was referring to either. Like, this pushback is inappropriate and emotional abuse, period. Yeah. Exactly. You're making this person feel unsafe. Sure. As a guest. Yes. Cynthia Erivo in 2024 was another example. Dax pressed her on whether her long nails interfered with her wiping after using the toilet.
37:52She said, I'm annoyed by it. Come on, guys. Like, again, why are people going on this podcast? Cher in 2025 repeatedly told Dax to his face on his own podcast. You're lucky. Kristen is definitely the better half. You must have something that I don't see. Kristen defended him saying he's a slow burn. He's almost too good for me. I love Cher for saying that. Then there was the Brad Pitt episode in 2025, and he publicly recounted nearly fist fighting Eric Dane outside of an AA meeting before they bonded, breaking the AA Alcoholics Anonymous anonymity. That could have been edited out. You should know as an addict that Alcoholics anonymous is anonymous, should be anonymous.
38:33And apparently Dax and Brad Pitt have bonded over doing AA, but they're both, what's the word? They're both consenting to that information on their own terms. You can't like out someone, obviously, for being an AA, like they outed Eric Dane. Actually, it's interesting that you're bringing this up because obviously, unfortunately, Eric Dane passed from ALS. Yeah. RIP. I know. And Dax Shepard was on stage. It wasn't in an armchair expert setting. I just watched this interview on my phone somewhere. And he was recounting how close him and Eric Dane had become. And he talked about this exact story.
39:10And he said, Eric Dane is no longer with us, but I guess I can tell this story now. When we first met, we both absolutely hated each other. We both grew up without father figures. We were almost too similar. And we triggered one another. And there was a point in time where we We were both at a meeting and we got into a fistfight and people had to break it up. But after they had realized that they had more in common than they realized and they became very close up until the day that Eric Dane died. And Dax was recounting this memory as something that he cherished because he's like Eric Dane and I were like brothers almost.
39:41But it wasn't always like that. But I think, I don't know, it's still tough because I didn't know Eric Dane was an addict or struggled with it. And I think Dax was trying to recount a very sweet story in his friendship with Eric, but also kind of unleashing a lot of Eric Jane's traumas as well. So it's kind of a catch-22. Like, I don't think he meant harm by it, but it also was like— It's just like not your place. Yeah. Does his family appreciate that you're, you know, telling all this stuff about him? Yeah, it's not your place. Right. You disclose that information. It's also when you say, like, that he said, oh, you're just so similar.
40:12It makes me laugh because Dax definitely thinks that he is just as hot as Eric Jane was. Like, Dax Shepard thinks that he is so hot, which is why he's always, like I said, casting himself, being shirtless, being the star of all of his, like, movies that he directed. Eric Dane. He looks at Eric Dane. He's like, yeah, we're, like, the same hot. Eric Dane was so handsome. It was, like, disgusting how handsome he was. Oh, my God. I didn't watch Grey's, but, like, McSteamy for a reason. Yes. Like, that is a good-looking. Beautiful man. Gorgeous. Beautiful man. Beautiful man. Beautiful man. Yes. Beautiful man.
40:49And also extremely talented. And we miss him all the time. Every week when I watch Euphoria, it's tough. But anyway, so in 2026, earlier this year, Dax interviewed Marcello Hernandez from SNL and was pushing Marcello, who is in a relationship. I think it's Marcello. Marcello Hernandez. Sorry. You guys, I don't watch SNL. No, but I think. Everyone's going to yell at me. No, but I think I said sensical. It's fine. Sensical? You guys, my vocabulary is not that vast and wide. But I think in some cultures, it could be Marcello. Like when you say pharmacy, pharmachia. Yeah. Well, Marcello. Okay, so Marcello apparently was pushing Marcello, who was in a relationship and has spoken about being in a relationship with a normie.
41:40Like she is not a celebrity. She is not, you know. And this also was something that came up during like the rumors about him and Paige DeSorbo. He's like, I have a girlfriend who I love deeply. And you guys, I don't appreciate this. But Dax was like, you need to date Sabrina Carpenter. Like, you really need to get with like, you really need to date her and get together with her and blah, blah, blah. And Marcelo's like, I have a girlfriend. Like, what? Like, it's just like creepy and weird. Again, irrelevant. Yeah, it's so stupid. It's like, do you have a crush on Sabrina Carpenter? or you're trying to like live out your fantasies through me?
42:14Like weird. So the overall sentiment is that Dax likes to play devil's advocate with marginalized guests. Correct. He mansplains. He interrupts women. He's patronizing to women. He doesn't really like interview. Like I noticed this again. I only listened to one episode. What are your thoughts on like his interview style? Because I know that it was with Kristen Bell, Justine Loop. So it's like his wife and like his really good friend. So it felt like more of just like a loose conversation. It didn't feel like an interview. Yeah. So again, it's been years since I've listened to it, but I recall it being more of a conversation.
42:46It wasn't an interview. So sorry, I hate to bring up Alex Cooper, but it's just top of mind right now. Question, answer, question, answer. For him, it was just it felt like it flowed like you were having dinner or you were having drinks. Like it didn't feel like a formal interview. So some people prefer that type of podcast. Others don't. That's what, excuse me, that's what Jake Shaino said. He's like, I'm not a journalist. I don't interview. I have a conversation. Oh, God, but I would rather listen to Dax over Jake. I've listened to Jake's podcast for this podcast research purposes. I would 100 % rather listen to Dax Shepard interviewing or conversing.
43:19But yeah, some people like that style of interview that feels just more like a conversation. He also kind of like steamrolls his guests and makes conversations about himself. Like a lot of things get turned around to himself. He has a lot of locker room humor, clearly. Basically a classic straight white guy with podcasts. You know, the comments that we've gotten on like TikTok, that's like tariffs on podcast equipment, like tariffs on podcast equipment for straight white men. Yeah. I love those TikToks where they're spoofing like every white man with a podcast. Hey, guys, it's me, John, back at it with my two bros.
43:54And it's like so many white guys have podcasts and they're all sitting in a little circle and they do say and do nothing. Yeah. And it's like women should be in the kitchen. Like, come on. It's like literally what it is. No, it is. It is. Like, that's the crazy thing. That's not hyperbole. Yeah, it's not exaggeration. Yeah. Yeah. So let's talk about Dax's sobriety. He has been sober since, with a few relapses that we will talk about, but he has been sober by all accounts since September 2004 when he was 29 and he joined Alcoholics Anonymous. And this was right before his career really took off.
44:29That same year, he was on Conan O 'Brien and he was actually banned from the show. uh he ended up blacking out sleeping through his prep was woken up by hotel security 20 minutes before the show um he woke up next to a stranger he was covered in urine um he went straight to the studio for his taping with conan and he completely slurred and ad-libbed his way through the segment god uh the audience laughed but conan o 'brien was irate they ended up he ended up having Conan on Armchair Expert and they recounted this. So he was banned for several years. And he even talked about the same year in 2004, smoking crystal meth.
45:08That's actually really sad. It was like a dark period. I actually watched this interview and I could tell that he was slurring his words and drunk, but I didn't think it was that terrible. But obviously, if you're Conan O 'Brien, you're trying to produce a show and make something watchable. I'm sure that was very difficult to deal with. So he ended up getting sober later that year. In 2012, he got into a motorcycle accident. He was prescribed painkillers and relapsed. He later revealed that there were spurts during his period of sobriety where he did take pills for injuries, etc., but he still branded himself as a sober person.
45:43So he was kind of cheating a little bit, which he later admitted to. He stole pills from his dying father in 2012 because his father had cancer and was prescribed Percocet. And this relapse was a secret until later. His sponsor told him not to reset his sobriety clock. So yeah, this was kind of just a secret. Until 2020, he got in another accident. And I think this was an ATV accident. He broke four ribs, snapped his clavicle in three places, and required a surgical metal plate to be put in. And his pills were prescribed him, Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycontin, obviously not great for an addict. But once the prescription ran out, he started buying them illicitly.
46:28He was actually high during his own 16-year sobriety celebration, calling it the worst hour of his life. Yeah, this was the podcast episode I listened to. It's really sad. It was an ATV accident, right? Oh, God, I don't... He was on... Oh, no, it was another motorcycle. Oh, my God. Okay, it was a motorcycle. Sorry. That's so sad. And I feel like That is so common for addicts that are in recovery. When they get into an accident, you're in so much pain. So you want to relieve yourself of that pain. And the only thing that's available to you in hospitals is these intense drugs that bring you right back to what you've been trying to escape for so long.
47:04I genuinely just feel super badly for him. And he was super honest about how he was tricking everyone. And he was showing up late. He was slurring his words. And Monica knew something was wrong. and Chris and Monica had to intervene and was like, something is seriously up with you and you cannot hide this anymore. We know you're using. Like, stop fucking around with us. Be honest. And yeah, he was trying to hide it. Yeah. But on September 25th, 2020, on his podcast, he released an episode called Day 7 and he had Monica interview him about what just happened. And the title refers to him being on his seventh day of renewed sobriety.
47:37And he was very emotional and vulnerable throughout. And you said you listened to this episode. Yes, yes. And it was just like so honest. and you just felt really felt for him. Like there was a lot of empathy I felt for him because it was clearly struggling and he didn't know. Like it's scary for you to be in recovery for so long and then one thing will set you back and it can completely derail your life. Totally. And the stakes are so much higher. He has a family now. So it's like it changes things. Yeah. I now understand. So when we were, we have like a live show segment that we're doing, we've talked about this before, called Things We Can't Say on the Pod for Legal Reasons or like controversial opinions, hot takes.
48:09And Christy's first one that she said was, I actually think Dax Shepard is really brave. And I was like, what are you talking about? But now I understand what you're talking about. This episode was widely praised as being, you know, very brave and honest. And it definitely was. In 2021, he had another injury on an e-bike this time. He ended up damaging the surgical hardware in his shoulder. And Kristen ended up taking over managing his meds so he would not abuse them. He needs to stop riding things, first of all. A hundred percent. Motorcycles, e-bikes, stop. Like, just stop riding games. And he continued with AA.
48:44And like I said, Brad Pitt said that they are in the same group. He was an armchair expert. And he said that Dax is kind of like an elder statesman of AA. September 4th, 2025 marked his 21-year total slash five-year post-relapse sobriety milestone. So congrats to him. That's an amazing accomplishment. So he was in a nine-year open relationship with a film crew assistant named Brie Morrison, and she ended up coming back into an episode of Armchair Expert, I think, last year.
51:04So great to know they're on good terms. That's pretty cute. he briefly dated Kate Hudson in 2007 for around three months. And it kind of started out as a joke. Kate said, while we were there, we said, wouldn't it be no Dax said that's wouldn't it be funny if we came out holding hands and I was your new boyfriend? Dax said during this episode, we were just pals. And then we added, wouldn't it be great if her new boyfriend didn't wear a shirt at Nobu? So their plan worked. And that night, Kate and a shirtless Dax were photographed as the media started to speculate. And this like joke made Kate want to have sex with him, according to her on the podcast.
51:40And so then they became a real couple. And what's interesting is that Dax described during this interview as feeling less than about her career success. I mean, Kate Huntson is the girl. Yeah. Back in the 2000s. Yeah, she was the girl. Exactly. He says, I think I was just in the point where I was not going to get hired for movies anymore. I had a bunch that didn't work. And I'm like, I don't fucking know what's next. And you were at that time making the most you ever made and having the most opportunity. And great of him to admit this. I also think this is how he feels about his wife a little bit, too, because she is so successful in the television industry.
52:16His podcast is obviously successful, but like we said, like, I don't think he sought out to be a podcaster. He sought out to be an actor. And yeah, his calling has shifted. And I actually think I did listen to the Kate Hudson episode and I remember her describing Dax as like you wouldn't see it because i don't think he's objectively like as handsome as say brad pitt or ashton kutcher or whatever but she said that he had this from what i recall like a big dick energy like it was like his presence he's like a boisterous loud yeah tall man and he kind of didn't give a fuck and he was walking out of nobu shirt looks like she liked that funniness to him and that he didn't take life too seriously so she did gravitate towards him and she did admit that.
52:57I could see that. Yeah. He was also linked to Tara Lipinski around this time, Mike Queen, from the Traders and the Olympics. Then Julie Andrews' granddaughter, Katie Edwards, sold the Daily Mail a story in 2018, alleging that she hooked up with Dax in 2009, two years into his Kristen Bell relationship. He denied this. So who knows if there's any truth to it. But let's talk about Kristen Bell, his longtime partner. They met at a producer's dinner party in 2007. Kristen didn't recognize him at first. She was like, is that one of the guys from Jackass or something? Which is hilarious. Jackass also underrated, by the way.
53:35Like that show ran so David Dobrik could walk. Oh no, walk so David Dobrik could run. I actually just saw a TikTok that's like, you are growing up on like Jake Paul and David Dobrik pranks. We grew up on Jackass. We are not the same. Right. And I was like, that's true. That's perfect. And I started looking up where to stream Jackass. And that's another one where I think you have to rent. You have to purchase. We're going to do a Punk'd and Jackass marathon. Punk'd and Jackass. Yeah. I remember seeing Jackass the movie. Oh, my God. I forgot they used to come out with movies, too. Yeah. Wow. Yep.
54:06Good times, guys. Film and television ain't what it used to be. I'll say that much. It ain't what it used to be. They don't make stuff like that anymore. No. Remember Hey Arnold? That was also way ahead of its time. A cartoon that was so diverse. Hey, that's so random. We'll talk about Punk'd and Jackass, and you're like, and Hey Arnold. I loved Hey Arnold, though. Loved it. Loved Hey Arnold. And, like, I look back at the topics and themes they would discuss on the show. Very diverse. I talked about the immigrant experience, being a person of color. Like, that show was so... Ahead of its time.
54:35Love it. Love it. We've got to do Hey Arnold. Kidding. Hey Arnold, deep dive. Yeah. So, where was I? Kristen Bell. Yeah, yeah. So, Dax said initially she seemed like almost too good of a person for him to consider having a walk. term relationship with. They ended up reconnecting later that year and had their first date in October 2007. He broke up with her after three months to date other women, then came back four days later. Of course. And couples therapy started six months into their relationship. And I think that couples therapy is an amazing thing, no matter how long you've been together.
55:11Dare I say that six months is like a little quick to need couples therapy or to want couples therapy because Because that's like still your honeymoon phase. No, completely. Right? Is that problematic to say? No, no, no. I am in favor of couples therapy. No, I think it's a great thing to engage in with your partner. But six months in is a little bit odd. It's odd. Yeah. Yeah. We're not judging. It's just odd. Yeah, it's different. Yeah. It's different. They got engaged in late 2009, and they refused to marry until same-sex marriage was legal. When the Defense of Marriage Act fell in 2013, Kristen tweeted Dax a proposal.
55:45And they got a little bit of, while it was nice that they are allies, obviously they got a little bit of backlash for making this day in history about themselves. They ultimately married at the L.A. County Beverly Hills Courthouse on October 17, 2013. Cost$142. And they had their daughters, Lincoln Bell Shepard, March 28, 2013, and Delta Bell Shepard, December 19, 2014. So they named their daughters Lincoln and Delta. Delta's interesting. Lincoln, I can get behind. Delta's a little strange, but okay. Celebrities just love doing things differently, you know? Yeah, those are just very unique names for little girls, but sure.
56:23They often talk about how tough monogamy is, which again, a lot of people say is refreshing to hear. Kristen has said monogamy is tough because you're still attracted to other people. She has also said that Dax's attraction to other people, she doesn't let it get to her. He can tell me someone he finds attractive, but it doesn't make me feel like he's going to leave me for that person because I'm not allowing my self-esteem to be affected. Again, this is like the everything I know about these people is against my will because they've talked about how she had a clogged milk duck when she was breastfeeding and Dax had to extract the mastitis to unclog it and said, we'll leave everyone's imagination to wander.
57:04And so, yeah, that, you know, I guess some people might appreciate their candor in sharing this. Other people are like, why do we need to picture that? Like, why do we need to know that? That's really graphic and something we didn't need to hear. Yeah. So that's my personal opinion. I don't think that's necessary, but I'm sure there are some people that are like, you know what? I appreciate the destigmatization. I'm sorry, my brain is not like firing on all cylinders today. Words are hard today. It's okay. It's really, it's really hard today. Okay, so this was a big controversy. If you remember this, just last year, Kristen posted, happy 12th wedding anniversary to the man who, after an episode of Dateline once said to me, I would never kill you.
57:52A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I'm heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would, in a heart emoji. Even though I'm heavily incentivized to kill you, I just got chills. That's not... It's like trying too hard. It's like very like millennial core trying to be funny and not landing. It's kind of like it reminds me of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively and how they talk about each other on social media. It's like it's not funny. Like you're trying too hard. It was also posted during Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the National Network to End Domestic Violence formally condemned it.
58:22The director of Family Violence Litigation Clinic at Albany Law School explained to the Daily Mail that such comments normalize abuse and silence survivors. And Kristen Bell ended up limiting comments on Instagram and she ended up skipping a Today Show appearance. And yeah, like it just was kind of like their biggest PR nightmare at the time. Yeah. And understandably so. Like what is even the point of like, again, like you're trying too hard to be funny. You're being like a corny millennial. Yes. But it's not funny. It's actually offensive and it's tone deaf and it's just like, why? Wait, perfectly said.
58:57Yeah. It's just too, it's trying too hard to be funny and it's not landing at all. Yeah. And then during this time of 2012 hit and run press drug eclipse surfaced in which Dax deadpanned and then I hit her several times and Kristen laughed and then I got beat up and guess what I never opened my mouth again clearly joking around but again like very toned up being so flippant about domestic violence just like not a good look um Nikki Glaser's golden globes joke which I thought was actually funny it ended up getting cut she said die my love if I had legs I'd kick you sorry baby These are not just Dax Shepard captions for his anniversary post.
59:31These are movies nominated tonight. Wait, that's actually so funny. I know. I love her. That's hilarious. Yeah. So Dax did not address this controversy. And again, this is someone who was very open and candid on his podcast, but he didn't address this for nearly six months. Eventually, he did in April 2026. And he said that Kristen had not told him about the backlash. He had no idea that this was happening. Wow. So he doesn't like read about himself online then because it says everywhere. I guess not. Yeah, I guess not. He said, all these people are convinced I'm beating Kristen. Kristen, none of them are married people.
1:00:01My wife has total fucking autonomy and is a gangster. Don't insult my wife. So he kind of took offense to the fact that people thought that, like, Kristen does not have enough autonomy to stand up to him or to, I don't know, which also is offensive in its own way, where it's like, well, there are also women that are being abused by their husbands that cannot leave for many reasons. That doesn't mean they are less than. Right. So it just was kind of an annoying situation. It's like he continues to dig himself into a deeper and deeper hole. It's like that caption wasn't enough. And now that you're doubling down, not intentionally, but yeah, it's just stop putting your foot in your mouth, please.
1:00:36Other cringe moments. In July 2023, they posted from the Boston Logan Airport saying that they had been kicked out of the terminal, but continue to document themselves like with blankets and pillows trying to sleep there, even though they were being told to leave. And they said, well, all nearby hotels are booked. It's like, you guys are multimillionaires. I'm sure you can figure something out. And it was just like, the rules don't apply to you, apparently. So people got annoyed with them for that. They also told Seth Meyers that their daughters are allowed to swear, not with impunity, but when it's called for.
1:01:11In an episode with Reese Witherspoon in 2025, Dax defended raising his daughters to be disrespectful and entitled. And he said that Lincoln, his daughter, has ordered non-alcoholic beer at restaurants. What? Like, what? What? And then they also talked about letting a then 11-year-old Lincoln and a then 9-year-old Delta to roam around Copenhagen unsupervised for seven hours in 2024. What? Which is crazy. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's not funny. I'm just imagining 11-year-old Lincoln saying, it's like one non-alcoholic beer, please. Non-alcoholic. Like non-alcoholic. That is so not cool. It's funny.
1:01:51It's so weird. It's really not cool. Yeah, there's not alcohol in it, but also like, why are you trying to get your child daughter to like the taste of beer as a child? Like what? It's bizarre. Bizarre and hysterical at the same time. Like what? Just so strange. So many strange parenting choices. Again, people are like, well, I guess it's okay if you do these things and that's your prerogative. You raise your kids how you want to raise them. But why are you telling all this? It's very just oversharing. They are constantly oversharing. and just have this, especially on Instagram, like self-deprecating millennial humor.
1:02:29He uses hashtags like hashtag dad bees. He posted a picture of Kristen Bell naked doing yoga for Mother's Day in 2021, eventually reposted it in 2025 to celebrate her Nobody Wants This Emmy nomination. She's doing like downward dog wearing nothing but blue knee-high socks. And there's a little sensor bar over her tushy. So it's just like stuff like that. It's like, you're so weird. It's so millennial. I'm sorry. I'm not over the 11-year-old daughter ordering non-alcoholic beer at restaurants. I added to the booty for Biden from Tana Mongeau that I thought was so funny. You're like, what? I'm like, what's funny?
1:03:02I'm like, it's just so like booty for Biden. And I was like, stop. But like this non-alcoholic 11-year-old thing is I will never get over that. That's like hysterical, but also like weird and wrong. So as of recently, he has kind of like a new look. Have you noticed this with his face? Like, yeah, look different. And he has like addressed this. He's like, my neck, he was talking to Kumail Nanjiani, who has famously bulked up for some of his recent projects. And he said, you know, like, it's weird. Like, my neck has gotten thicker. I've gotten more muscular. And for some reason, people act like I've gotten a facelift.
1:03:35People think I got jaw implants. I have not. I've got no work done. All I did was I got Botox. And then they were like, while you're here, you want to do your forehead, too. And I did my forehead. So he's saying it was just Botox. Like, OK, Kendall Jenner. He was like, it was just baby Botox. Yeah. I'm looking at a photo of him and Kristen Bell, probably, I don't know, it looks like 10 years ago to today. It looks almost like, I want to say, buckle fat removal. His cheeks look a little bit more hollow. There's something, like, very different about his—I don't know if it was a jaw implants, facelift, but, like, there definitely was more than just Botox done.
1:04:08Okay, Kendall Jenner. If that's his prerogative. Okay, Kendall Jenner, like, why are you lying? Just don't even bring it up if you're going to lie. Just don't even. Right. But, again, I'm sure all of his listeners are like, no, he's telling, but, like, he's so honest. So that's his reputation. You know, he has fostered this relationship with his listeners that they love, that he is so honest and candid, almost to a fault. And I think that is probably a huge part of his success as a podcaster. Again, it may not be my cup of tea, but there's a reason that he is, you know, one of the biggest podcasts in the world.
1:04:41So yeah, that's the tea on Dak Shepard. What are your closing thoughts? Yeah, I didn't know about, honestly, 80 % of this. He definitely has done some crazy, problematic things and said crazy things. I genuinely am curious what their relationship is behind closed doors. We never know what happens in a marriage behind closed doors, but it's just they have so many odd moments publicly. I can't even imagine, like, how dysfunctional are they in private? And I'm curious kind of how this impacts their girls. Lincoln and Delta. Yeah, Lincoln and Delta. But I mean, I don't listen to Armchair Expert anymore.
1:05:19I will just like to keep Dex Shepard in a box. And that was his box in 2003 with Without a Paddle and Punk'd. And I think those are nostalgic parts of my upbringing. And I think his career, not peak, but when he was young and a little bit foolish and crazy. But this Dex Shepard today, I don't identify with. Like, I will identify with the one 20 years ago. And that's what I will choose to remember. I'm curious. Again, what you guys think, if we have any cherries slash baby Starks, very curious. Yeah. I know Dutchman, honestly. It sounds like he, again, like there's a reason that he has been this successful.
1:05:57People love his podcast. So yeah. And you know what? He has definitely, I can see now why you say that you think that he's brave. I think that a lot of his, you know, honesty and vulnerability with regards to his sobriety is, you know, very admirable. Yeah. Yeah. Does that excuse a lot of the weird things he said, especially his comments to JVN? No. Absolutely not. Like that is attack, emotional abuse. You're not making someone feel safe. That is inexcusable for sure. So we have to separate those two things, the bravery and making people feel not good. He does remind me a bit of Joe Rogan in a way.
