In short

The hosts discuss James Franco’s rise as a charismatic A-list actor and the reasons he’s “out of the spotlight,” focusing on allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of power, plus related incidents with women and his public persona.

Guest backgrounds

The transcript doesn’t name the guests, but it features two main hosts (Sophie and another co-host) who share personal memories of being fans of Franco (and Dave Franco) and discuss celebrity news and interviews.

Key claims

Franco allegedly abused power by sexually exploiting women who were his students/mentees through his acting school(s). The hosts argue his explanations (e.g., “addictive personality,” sobriety, “social media is tricky,” “teenage angst”) are excuses. They also claim he was aggressive on set (Busy Phillips memoir) and inappropriate with a 17-year-old via Instagram DMs (Lucy).

Notable examples

2014 Lucy Instagram DM exchange where he allegedly tried to meet her despite her stating she was under 18; Busy Phillips memoir describing Franco screaming and violently shoving her to the ground; 2018 LA Times/New York Times reporting by former students (e.g., Violet Paley, Sarah Tither Kaplan) alleging coercion, unsafe conditions (removing protective plastic guards), and exploitative pay; 2011 Oscars hosting awkwardness with Anne Hathaway; 2017–2018 Me Too-era backlash including a Times Up pin controversy.

2:21watching some clips of our episode topic today, James Franco, which is not the best way to wake up. I hate that this man used to be so good looking because I hate him so much. I used to be obsessed with him. I mean, I get it. I get why. He used to be my number one celebrity crush. I completely understand. Obviously, those days are over, but there was a time. Yes. With cigarette smoke. Yeah. There was a time when we all adored James Franco. And I've never been able to get over his brother, Dave, because he really is my all-time celebrity crush. Yeah, you love him. But I think that James Franco definitely was on top of the world.

2:59And he 100 % is deservingly out of the spotlight because of his heinous acts. Yeah. Abuse of power, sexual harassment, reaching out to underage women. I mean, the list goes on. Yeah. But before we get into that, Sophie, what is your history with James? Obviously, he was your biggest celebrity crush. When was the time that you decided like, wow, this guy is really handsome and I really like him? I remember actually there was a specific moment. So there obviously were movies that I, you know, watched with him 127 hours. I thought he was great in Pineapple Express. He really like towed the line between comedy and serious dramatic actor.

3:38So I always just appreciated his work. But I remember there was a moment where he was like on the Oscars red carpet. I can't remember if it was the one that he was hosting with Anne Hathaway or if it was just he was, you know, a guest or a nominee. I don't remember exactly what Oscars it was, but he was just wearing like a tux, obviously, sunglasses. He looked like just such a movie star. He's always kind of had like a James Dean kind of look to him. And I just remember being like, wow, like that guy's fucking hot. He's a movie star, like just hot. And it seemed like he had a good personality, which we know now he very much does not.

4:15But yeah, he, when I'm watching videos of him interacting with women, his co-stars, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, the girls of Spring Breakers. I mean, he has this captivating glance or this eye contact that really brings you in. And I see why women are very charmed by him. I mean, even above his good looks, like he really has a way of talking to women and making you feel very special. And I think that's how he lures girls. And I mean, also the fact that he was like an A-list Hollywood star, Oscar nominated, Golden Globe. But he just has a way with women and kind of reading more about his background and how he grew up and his early life.

4:54A lot of that he likes to blame on his addictive personality. And we'll get into that. But what I've learned about James is that he kind of had one of those like checkered past where he went through a lot in his early life. and he often blames his addiction to women and the sexual assault allegations on his addictive personality and how, you know, I used to be an alcoholic, so I've kind of replaced that addictive personality towards women and attention and fulfillment and validation. But it's like, why don't you just admit you're a piece of shit? Like, let's not blame any addictive personality to the fact that you were assaulting women and reaching out to 17-year-olds.

5:28Like, separate. Separate things. Completely separate. Right. Wait, you know what other movie I loved? Sorry. I was just listing off, you know, I said Pineapple stress 127 hours, which I remember seeing in theaters. And he was just so good in it. I fucking loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes. All of the Planet of the Apes movies, but especially Rise of the Planet. You never saw it, did you? No, I. Your stare got me with a blank stare. Yeah, no, never. Oh, my. Nance. I can't with you, Nance. I know. I'm not a cinephile like you. Like, you're so much better at movies. I'm a cinephile. You are. I guess I am.

6:05I'm such a cinephile, but he, yeah, Caesar is home. Is that a fan of the movie? I know that means nothing. That means nothing to you. Yeah. See, my favorite movie of his is Spider-Man. I saw Spider-Man in theaters with Tobey Maguire. And I know there have been multiple other Spider-Mans out with Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield. And I love and adore both men, okay? But something about the Tobey Maguire rendition is just like A+. Is that like widely agreed upon? I think, I mean, I feel like those are the ones that we grew up with. Yeah. Like the Andrew Garfield ones and the Tom Holland ones, I was just like out of the game at that point.

6:43I wasn't like going to see Spider-Man. But I remember as a child watching the Tobey Maguire ones and being like, yeah, these are fun. Kirsten Dunst, the upside down kiss. Yeah. James Franco was a really good villain. Killed my, yeah. The Green Goblin. The Green Goblin mask. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. He played Harry Osborn in that movie. So let's get right into it. So James Franco, he was born April 19th, 1978, making him 48 years old today, which, when did I wake up and James Franco is now 48, nearly 50? I don't like that. That is kind of crazy. That is, yeah, makes me feel old. Yeah. He has been in many movies that we already mentioned, plus Milk, Eat, Pray, Love, which, like, I completely forgot he played Julia Roberts' love interest.

7:25I never saw that. Oh, okay, finally, one movie that I've seen that you haven't. No, but it's always some, like, weird rom-com. that you've seen that I haven't. It's never a serious movie, just so we're clear. He was in The Disaster Artist, for which he won a Golden Globe. I remember this was right around the time of his cancellation. Yes, and he was getting a lot of accolades for this specific movie, but at the same time, like six months later, he was canceled. It was around the time of the Me Too movement. It was like 2017. Yep. He also won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of James Dean, which was one of his first works of art after he did Freaks and Geeks, which only went on for 12 episodes or one season.

8:02He has two brothers, Dave Franco. Like I said, my celebrity crush. It's so jarring to realize that Dave Franco and James Franco come from the same family because you think about Dave Franco and he has such a good edit, such a positive public perception. I think he's really been able to distance himself from the allegations and like the negative kind of thoughts and aura that James Franco has. But his relationship with Alice and Brie seems so commendable and they seem so normal and they don't have kids. They're just like cool cat parents and they work together. Oftentimes, Alison Brie stars in the movies that Dave Franco directs.

8:36And I just really admire their relationship. And I often forget that these two are brothers. And Dave Franco has made it so abundantly clear. He wants nothing. Like, he doesn't want to speak about his brother ever publicly, which I get. Like, that's your family. But also, you have to keep in mind, like, your public perception and you want to distance yourself as much as you can from your creepy brother. Totally, totally. And we shouldn't hold Dave accountable. for like what his brother does because they're two separate people, you know? Yeah. So I think that's entirely fair to say, yeah, Dave, you are a separate person.

9:09You are innocent until proven otherwise. Yeah. You know, he has no allegations. He seems like a very wholesome wife guy. Yeah. Yeah. I got it. I think Dave Franco, I think he's even more attractive than James Franco at his peak. See, that's where we, I feel like we have very similar taste in guys. And Dave Franco doesn't do it for me. I think because he's like petite. He is petite. So yeah. And petite like doesn't work as much for me as it does for you. Sure, sure. But so I saw him when I was at Bon Iver at the Hollywood Bowl and he saw me staring at him. He was leaving the men's restroom. And I remember thinking like, if I see anyone tonight, I'm going to see Dave Franco.

9:46And for whatever reason, I saw him and my friend was like, dude, you manifested that. But I could tell he didn't want to be bothered. So for once in my life, I didn't approach. But I will forever regret that day because I love him. But interestingly enough. He was like security. Yeah, he's like, I can't deal with this right now. Like this crazy girl. But my sister, when she lived in LA, she has a picture with Dave Franco and McLovin. Her and her friend Emily were at a park and they asked Audrey to take their picture of their group. And Audrey was like, wait, you're Dave Franco. And he was like, so sweet.

10:14Like he looked so hot in this photo with McLovin. And I love that he was also at Bonnevere. Wait, Dave? Dave. Not James, yeah. Yeah, and he was with McLovin at the park when Audrey took a photo with him. And he was with McLovin at the Bonnevere concert. So they're like legitimately very close friends. Oh, they're like besties. Yeah, super cute. Cute. His, they also have his other brother, Tom Franco, who is out of the limelight. The other one. Yeah, it reminds me of like Frankie Jonas. Yeah, the bonus Jonas. Frankie Jonas also hosted Claim to Fame. Frankie Jonas hosted Claim to Fame alongside Kevin Jonas.

10:48It's like they are so bored, Kevin and Frankie, that like they have time to host this like canceled reality. I love that show for the record. That was like one of my favorite shows. I'm really sad. It was a show about, it was a show about like celebrity relatives and it was a mystery who their celebrity relative was, but the game was to guess and they all lived in a house together. And I love that show. I'm like really sad that it was like, it was partly canceled. I think because I, me and Henry were the only people that watched it. And then also because the Jonas Brothers like went back on tour.

11:24So Kevin was busy. And they're like, Frankie can't handle this on his own. He doesn't have the star power. No, legitimately, like, I think about that often. I'm like, there are four brothers and they literally excluded one. Obviously because he was, like, probably six when the boys took off. But, like, how must that feel? Yeah. Okay. So James is born to Douglas Franco and Betsy Franco. His mother, Betsy, born in 1947, is a children's book author and occasional actress. And their father, Douglas Franco, ran a Silicon Valley business. I'd imagine they are wealthy because if you live in Palo Alto, it's a very she-she, very nice, very wealthy neighborhood.

11:59Like, I feel like median home there is at least$2 million. Yeah. He was raised in a very academic Palo Alto family, and he was a very gifted math student. In fact, his father was very upset when—we'll get into it—when James ended up going to UCLA to major in English. He later dropped out to become an actor, and his father was like, you were destined to become a mathematician. Like, how could you leave your, like, higher education to pursue acting, which ended up working out for him somewhat. But even in high school, James interned at Lockheed Martin, which is like an aerospace engineering defense military.

12:30It's, yeah, that's, yeah. It's intense. Like, I know three people from college that worked there and they're all, like, very gifted and brilliant and, like, engineers and, like, just smart. But the fact that he was interning there in high school, I don't know anyone that interned at Lockheed Martin in high school. That's pretty crazy. Yeah, so he's just a really bright guy, but with a lot of brightness comes some troubles. So in high school, he was very rebellious, and he was arrested multiple times for underage drinking, graffiti, and shoplifting. He was kind of an entrepreneur in his early life.

13:02So he would go to the store, go to the mall. He would steal designer fragrances and then sell them to classmates in the black market. Okay. Oh. And he would get arrested for underage drinking. And ultimately, he became a ward of the state. And he was facing the possibility of entering into juvie. But he was given a second chance by the judge. And James says, quote, it was teenage angst. I was uncomfortable in my own skin. I was shy. I changed my ways just in time to get good grades. And he managed to recover from addiction at the age of 17. And as a way to stay sober and focused, he basically threw himself into the world of acting.

13:37And after the age of 17, he's really been sober ever since. And which makes it all the more like even more nefarious. I'm not saying that it's ever okay to sexually assault people. It's also like even weirder that there was no alcohol involved, that you were like approaching people soberly. Like you were just such a weirdo. I don't know. Like I feel like there's a lot of social lubrication and alcoholism that comes with like hooking up. But the fact that you were doing this all this soberly to your students, no less, like you're a weirdo. I find that people that are people, predators that are sober, it's because they need a vice.

14:13It reminds me of Crystalia. Crystalia is famously a teetotaler. We need a whole episode on Crystalia, honestly. Olivia and myself used to be huge fans of his, both of us, until, you know, he also was similarly canceled for being inappropriate with underage women. And he was famously sober, teetotaler. And this was his vice. I feel like, and I'm not saying that obviously for all sober people, but I think for these creepy men, it's like, I'm going to kick drugs and alcohol, but I still need that, you know, that thing that gets me high, which is being a fucking creep to teenage girls. Yeah. And James Franco actually did a serious XM interview the last three years, and he still continues to attribute his behavior to his students and to these underage girls to his addictive personality.

14:59And it's like, again, you can have that. I don't doubt that you have an issue with alcohol. But like, why do you keep leaning on that to say that's why I was inappropriate? It's just like a very convenient excuse that is just not legitimate in my opinion. Yeah, gross. So he's a low-key genius. And I feel like the reason why many of us women were so drawn to him was because not only was he a gifted actor, but he was also very seemingly intelligent. He was an academic too. Yeah, he was a professor. He taught acting lessons. He had an acting school. So it began in 1996 when he enrolled at UCLA as an English major.

15:32And like I said, he dropped out during his freshman year to study acting full time. And 10 years later, he re-enrolled at UCLA after establishing his Hollywood career. And at a surface level, it's like, oh, my God, James, good for you. Like, you dropped out of school, but you want to continue to pursue higher education, even though it doesn't mean, like, you want it for the money, you want it for the intellect. But it's like, I feel like for James Franco, he probably honestly did it just to be around younger women. or just students in general where he has much of an upper hand. Two years later, he earned a bachelor's in English with a creative writing focus from UCLA.

16:05And subsequently after his bachelor's, he went to many a top university. He studied at Columbia University to get his MFA. He went to the NYU Tisch School of Arts to get his MFA in filmmaking. He went to Brooklyn College to get his MFA in fiction writing, Warren Wilson College to pursue his MFA in poetry. and he also was at Yale University for six years between 2010 to 2016 to pursue doctoral studies and worked towards a PhD in English. And I read a lot of these articles online like, okay, he was this Oscar-nominated actor and he was also taking, he had a full plate of like of units that he was taking in university as well.

16:43And apparently professors were quite literally giving him a pass just because he was who he was. Because a lot of people were saying, How is this man taking like 24 units in school while at the same time being a full-time actor? Like that's not possible. There's frankly not enough hours in the day for you to do both. And it's because professors were giving him A's just for being there. That tracks. Yeah, that tracks. So we already talked a little bit about his sobriety and his journey. But he did say that validation is like a drug and it's never ending. And he said, you know, while also staying sober from alcohol and attending Alcoholics Anonymous, women are kind of my cognitive dissonance.

17:22They're the reason why I have this. I was kind of like given these accusations against me. Well, let's talk about his career. So he played in the 1999 to 2000 series Freaks and Geeks, which has since developed like two decades later, a cult following. I think it was. Oh, yeah. Have you seen it? I haven't seen it, but I know that it has like a very passionate cult following because he was also in it with Seth Rogen. Yeah. Yeah. And people are like obsessed with it, but I never watched it. I was watching a clip of the showrunner talking about James Franco and his decision to hire him. And he's like, when I decided to hire James, I kind of saw him as like this goofy looking kid, big mouth, kind of a dick.

18:01He didn't really get along with the other cast members. The only person he actually did get along with was Seth Rogen, which is why they ended up working together for decades and decades and decades. But he did say that James really did not get along with really anyone. And we'll get into like his interactions with Busy Phillips and what she wrote about James in his book. But he just doesn't seem like an easy person to get along with. And people have noted that his work ethic while working with him was very compulsive. He would method act, which we just did an episode on Timothee Chalamet last week, where Timothee does not method act, whereas James is the complete opposite.

18:36So in the James Dean TV show in 2001, just to be like James Dean, he would smoke two packs of cigarettes a day. And he would really get into the whomever he was portraying on minimal sleep, dozens of simultaneous projects he was taking on. He would do multiple graduate studies. And I was thinking about this guy that I went to high school with. And I'm curious if you have like a similar story growing up. Like there are people that are sometimes so smart, but sometimes they lack some social skills. And I'm not saying like, I don't know, they're like on the spectrum or anything like that. They just they're so smart that they're so in their head that they can't have like normal interactions.

19:10And I'm talking about like the brightest people. Like the guy that I'm thinking about was like a guy that went to MIT. He was like into physics. Like there is something to be said about super like academic people that also are kind of socially awkward because they're just like they're too intellectual. Oh, I think that's very, very, very common. Yeah. Yeah, like, and I think that's kind of what he was like, not to say that that's the reason why he was assaulting women. But like, I don't know, I feel like I know what James Franco from my high school specifically, like good looking. He was apparently outside of being, you know, a sexual predator.

19:41He was also just socially awkward and socially weird and people didn't like being around him. Yeah, they said that he was just kind of rude, not disarming whatsoever. People thought he was kind of in his own little corner. Like no one in the Freaks and Geeks cast got along with him. But like Seth and him, for whatever reason, took a liking to one another. And Seth was also at the beginning of his career. Which, side note, even though people have or even though Seth Rogen has since distanced himself from James Franco and has said that he doesn't associate with him anymore, et cetera, et cetera, since all this came out.

20:09I also fucking don't like Seth Rogen. I can't tell you exactly why. I just don't like him. And I think that he not to say that he's just as nefarious or just as bad as James Franco, but you can't be that close with someone for that long and not know what's going on. But now he's like, I'm just a good guy. I'm like the funny stoner, you guys. I didn't have any idea of what was going on. I don't associate with him anymore. I don't know. He just, he gives me nefarious vibes also. So I'm just gonna, I need to get that off my chest. Honestly, that's a really good point because birds of a feather flock together.

20:40And Freaks and Geeks aired in 1999, okay? Seth Rogen distanced himself publicly from James Franco. Only after, yes, the accusations. And it's like, oh, you took it took this going public. Yes. For you to distance yourself from your longtime best friend and creative partner. Right. That's. Yeah, that is convenient. And I watched an interview of Seth Rogen talking about Dave. I mean, James Franco very recently. And when asked by the podcaster, whomever, he really was stuttering on his words. And he kept saying, you know, I'm not saying much because I don't really know how to answer this question right now.

21:16And the reporter was kind of trying to redirect the interview. you and she's like, okay, I just have to ask, like, what is your relationship like now? And Seth Rogen basically said, professionally, I've made it very known that I will no longer work with him personally. And I said everything I can say professionally on that topic. Personally, there are a lot of people involved that I don't want to bring into the limelight, but I have many thoughts and feelings that I can't really speak about. And I was like, what other people besides you and James? Like, what are you referring to? Are you talking about the victims?

21:43Word salad. Word salad. Yeah, yeah. But I'm curious if they have a private relationship. Do you think they do? I think probably yes. And that would be my assumption. In any case, I just, yeah, I think it, I don't know. How do you not know what's going on with your longtime best friend and creative partner that you spend basically every day with? Well, and it kind of reminds me of the Diddy and Ashton Kutcher relationship. Yes, exactly. Exactly. Birds of a feather. Birds of a feather. So I'm just going to leave it at that. And I know that Seth Rogen has a ton of fans because he just plays that like stoner.

22:19Look, I'm just like a stoner guy who's like this funny, fat Jewish kid. And I like to do pottery in my free time. I don't buy it. I don't buy it. Yeah. I really don't. Because you were there in the decades that you were there. Exactly. So you can't. I'm sorry. What do you guys think? Do you think that there's any way Seth Rogen didn't know what was going on? Do you like Seth Rogen? Something about him just gives me really bad vibes. You know what? It kind of reminds me of not to say that he's the same or at all similar to Wes Wilson, but it's kind of like, oh, look, I'm this like approachable, pudgy, like funny kid.

22:56And it's like, no, there's something deeply sinister about that. No, I think that's completely, completely fair. And I always kind of question like just everyone in general that has a still really positive kind of thoughts about Seth while at the same time not questioning like we are. Like I feel like Ashton Kutcher was not granted that same treatment. But I think it's because Ashton Kutcher has had many a scandal of his own separate from Diddy. Yeah. Seth Rogen, on the other hand, has had zero. Yeah. As far as my knowledge. Yeah. I don't have any scandals. But yeah, I'm curious what you guys think.

This is my sixth apartment in 12 years in New York City, which is crazy to think about. So when you move that much, you become less and less enthusiastic about spending money on new pieces. Of course, I still want my apartment to feel chic and elevated, but knowing it's not my forever home makes it hard to want to splurge. That's why I've turned to Wayfair for home upgrades for over a decade now. I'm obsessed with my latest purchase. It sounds kind of silly, but we were previously throwing our laundry in an open laundry bin that just ended up looking messy and cheap in the corner of our bedroom.

25:07It became an absolute eyesore, so I searched for closed wicker laundry bins on Wayfair that could hide the mess and add like a chic, beachy touch to our bedroom, and I found the perfect one for under$100. Yes, and it was widely panned. Yes. So the Oscars Academy Awards, they decided to have, they selected James and Anne because they were like, oh, they're young, they're fresh. They're going to attract a younger demographic to watch the show. But this broadcast is widely considered as one of the most famously awkward hosting performances in Oscar history.

27:37And there was simply just a jarring contrast between James and Anne Hathaway's energy levels. I was watching a few clips and Anne was like super enthusiastic. She tried to carry the show. She was dropping all these jokes and she would reach over to James and he would be so deadpan, so disengaged. It almost seemed as if he might have been like stoned or something. Yeah, I remember this. It was almost like he was like too cool to be there. And it's like, well, you're hosting the Oscars, so you accepted this job. You're not too cool. You need to show up and get your ass up and work. Wait, Sophie, that's the best way to describe it.

28:12He did think he was too cool to be there. It's like you're on the biggest stage in your entire industry and you think you're too cool to be here. Give me a break. And for the record, I love the idea of the Oscars switching it up with different hosts. Because those five years in a row where Jimmy Kimmel hosted, worst Oscars ever. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But they just, it was just an awkward pairing. Because you have Anne Hathaway who's like the theater kid, the geeky, excited theater kid. And then he's like the too cool for school guy. Yeah, I like poetry and like, yeah, I don't know. He just, yeah, he's too cool.

28:43And Oscar writers later describe their dynamic as being like watching an uncomfortable blind date. And even now, four years ago, Anne was on Watch What Happens Live and she's like, yeah, we really sucked at hosting. Like she acknowledges it was a flop. And luckily for her, I feel like she's been able to like skate by, but yeah, I completely forgot this happened. But this is kind of dark. So it was actually James who ended up convincing Anne to take the job because she was a little bit hesitant initially and she does talk about how she was like, I should have just followed my gut instinct and told James, no, like this isn't for me.

29:14But after the whole dynamic flopped, James ended up just downplaying it as, oh, it was just an experiment of mine. Head writer David Wilde recalled Anne suggesting that James try something funny in rehearsal. And James snapped back at Anne and said, don't tell me how to be funny. He's weird. And I also think this tracks because Anne Hathaway has had such a contentious relationship with the public. Like she has been torn apart for just existing and for being, like I said, an excited theater girl. And meanwhile, James Franco, if you are an attractive white man, you can do whatever you want and kind of get away with it.

29:52I think if anything, this was way more of a hit on her career than his for sure. Of course, it's always like that. Yeah, always. They do the same exact job. And actually, I would say she did a far better job in comparison to him. A hundred percent. But people give her so much more shit than him. They're like, oh, well, that's just James. He's high and he's just like a poet. Yeah. Okay, so this is not the first time he's kind of been aggressive towards his female counterparts like Anne. So as I mentioned, James had an onscreen girlfriend played by Busy Phillips on Freaks and Geeks. And Busy Phillips, she wrote a memoir in 2018.

30:23And she writes about an account in which James screamed at her before violently shoving her to the ground. It was during a scene where she was directed to lightly nudge James's chest. and James ended up breaking character. He grabbed her, screamed at her, and threw her to the ground. This is in Busy Phillips' memoir, This Will Only Her Little. And Busy said that James threw her on the ground hard enough that she had the wind knocked out of her. Oh my God. Like, what the hell? Busy ended up telling her co-stars, and one of her co-stars advised her to report it to HR, to the manager. And James ended up apologizing the next day, only after being ordered to by producers.

30:59And he faced no formal written documentation about the incident. Nothing happened to him. And she, Busy ended up talking about it in a 2016 talk show appearance. And she's like, yeah, it was a brutal experience, but nothing that we didn't get over. Like we made amends since then. But Busy did say that she was kind of a bully. And she attributes it to like him just being 19 years old and kind of dumb and like kind of hormonal or whatever. But I did watch an interview of her over the last couple of years. And she's like, I hate that that part of the memoir was used as clickbait. Like me and James are so good now.

31:32We've talked since then. And like, you know, years after this incident had happened, he and I got lunch. We sat down and he was very apologetic. And I felt like he was very genuine about the entire thing. And she's like, I hate that it's now being used as clickbait. But it's like, well, you talk about like a scorned, formerly A-list actor shoving you to the ground, knocking the window at you. It's going to become clickbait, yeah. Yeah, what were you thinking? Yeah. And she's like, yeah, I accepted the apology, but I still get to tell it because it fucking happened to me. And I'm thinking, like, if the script read a light nudge and he shoves you to the ground, that's like a, that's assault.

32:08Yeah, that's literally assault. I can't even imagine any man, whether it be for a work thing or in a personal life, wanting to shove me to the ground where I lose my breath. Yeah. It's just, like, very traumatic. Okay, let's talk about his other interactions with women, most notably the 2014 Lucy Instagram incident. Do you know what I'm talking about? Yes, I do remember this. This is honestly makes me sick. to my stomach. Yeah. So in 2014, a 17-year-old girl, she was visiting from Europe. And he, in 2014, he was how old? 35. 35, okay. 35 and 17. She was in New York City to watch a Broadway show that he was on of my cement.

32:45She was there with her mother. And she is in like... Side note, I waited outside this theater for a really, really, really long time back when I was obsessed with him to try to catch a glimpse of him. And I didn't. But I remember being in that crowd back when he was on broadway and i was like i need to see james ringer that's how i was with him okay sorry so back then lucy got her wish and she was like i just want to take a picture with james and this is also when like instagram kind of started to become a thing this is 2014 so it wasn't the instagram that we know today yeah um lucy is a scottish was scottish tourist and she met him outside the theater and there were so many girls like screaming like james take a picture take a picture and she was one of those girls that was lucky enough to snap a photo with him and after she snapped that photo, James looks at her and he goes, you got to tag me in that.

33:30And she's like, okay, yeah, I'll tag you. And later that evening, Franco saw that Instagram tag and he tried to initiate a conversation with Lucy. And I'm going to be Lucy, you be James, okay? Start with the okay, be well. Okay. Wait, is that James? Yeah. Oh, okay. Okay, be well, X. I'll come back when I'm 18. Oh, so he definitely knows she's underage. Yep. He says, well, this is a story my Scottish friends will never believe. Don't tell. I just want proper evidence that it's you and I won't. I gave it to you. If you don't want to meet, then text me when you do. Bye. You sound so dodgy, though.

34:07Bye. One second. I will meet you if you write my name on a piece of paper, then send it to me with your face also in the picture, please. Sends a photo of his face with the name Lucy on the piece of paper. He knows that she is only 17 or that she is under 18 because she says, I'll come back when I'm 18. He's trying to fucking meet up with her. He's disgusting. He's a 35-year-old man, mind you. Disgusting. Okay, go down to the next page when he says, how long will you be? Oh, wait. When he says, can I see you? Oh, how long will you be in New York? Oops, sorry. A few days. It's my 18th birthday present.

34:42You're 18? Who are you with? Do you have a BF? question mark nearly 18 i'm with my mom and not if you're around the heart eyes emoji very explicitly not 18 yep okay go to the next one this it's getting worse where he goes can i see you as long as you're james franco i am you're single what's the hotel should i rent a room april fools was an hour ago though dot dot dot he sends a selfie and says it's me yes or no tomorrow or thursday oh my god and i'm looking at pictures of this young woman who's texting of what she looked like when she was texting James Franco, she looks like she could be in middle school.

35:19Like, it's actually not even funny. I had chills when I was looking at this. And of course, this is 2014, right? So guys, this is before he actually suffered a real cancellation in 2018. So when this happened, everyone sided with James. Like how fucking disgusting, okay? It was such a sadly different time. 2014, this was pre-Me Too movement. It should have been a no-brainer to side with the 17-year-old child. But oh my God, that's so upsetting. And in the lens of 2014, when Lucy came out with this story and she was brave enough to come out this story, she got a wave of online hatred and abuse that she still suffers.

35:57People tell her to go kill herself. We'll enjoy watching you die. Go video it. She was a victim in this entire thing. And what's so sick is that James Franco addressed it publicly when he was asked about it on the Kelly and Michael show. By the way, Kelly Ripa's so annoying. I don't like her. I have, like, no feelings towards her, honestly. She's— I'm, like, very indifferent towards her. She was on—I know that her and her husband, Mark Consuelas— Yes. Is that his name? That they are very, like, open about how much sex they have. Yes. Which is like, okay, we didn't ask. Yes. She also guest starred on an episode of Broad City and was so funny.

36:33Playing herself. So I give her points for that. But other than that, I'm very indifferent. Okay, you won't be indifferent by the time you listen to this. But I was going to say that back when I was a toaster, there was like this inside joke on the toast that Kelly pays for like random articles to be published about her. So like anytime you open Instagram, it's always like Kelly Ripa decides to show off that thong bikini on a Bahamas trip with Mark Consuelos. And it's like, why is Kelly Ripa always be written about? So it got to the point like anytime I would open Instagram and there would be like a People magazine article of Kelly Ripa, people would like tag Claudia Oshry or like girl with no job because like it was actually true I was like why is Kelly Ripa always being discussed about the sex life or like a random vacation she's taking or like that's like no one asked no one asked Kelly Ripa gets a new rug to her hot New York City living room Kelly Ripa gets a new rug for her Upper East Side apartment like the most random shit so this is why I don't like Kelly Ripa for real so when she asked James Franco in 2014 about Lucy and about the allegations of him DMing an underage woman.

37:37James responds, I didn't want to come on the show and feel awkward. So yeah, I mean, I guess, you know, I'm embarrassed. And I guess I'm just a model of, you know, how social media is tricky. And by the way, again, this is 2014. So like he blames it on social media being tricky rather than not focusing on him DMing an underage girl. And she wasn't tricking him. Like she explicitly said multiple times, I'm under 18. I'm under 18. She was being very honest with him. She wasn't trying to like trick him right and he keeps saying it's tricky what clarify she should have said clarify what is tricky yeah what exactly what's so tricky also you're a fucking like you you interned at lockheed martin you have like 20 bachelor degrees or master's whatever mfa is whatever the fuck yeah like you're acting like you're too dumb for social media great point like you're like a literal like genius unfortunately but you can't understand that a girl has explicitly told you she's underage.

38:31So he goes, it's the way people meet each other today. But what I've learned, I guess, just because I'm new to it, again, give me a fucking break. Just because I'm new to it is like, you don't know who's on the other end. You meet somebody in person and you get a feel for them, but you don't know who you're talking to. And you know, so I use bad judgment. I learned my lesson. Unfortunately, in my position, I mean, I have a very good life, but not only do I have to go through the embarrassing kind of rituals of kind of meeting someone, sometimes if I do, then it gets, you know, published for the world.

38:56So, you know it's doubly embarrassing but anyway no one feels bad for you yes then stupid fucking kelly ripa and probably uh michael praises james for telling his truth on the show and she goes on to say i think the way you came out here and handled it is perfectly acceptable it happens to everybody and i think it happens to movie stars on a much grander scale like you just said because everyone knows who you are i promise i will not reveal our text messages to the world Shut up. Like, what are you talking about? Also, like, saying this is just a universal experience, especially if you're, like, a hot, famous guy.

39:30Like, of course, teenage girls are going to trick you into hitting on them. Once again, this girl was not tricking him. Right. He fully knew how old she was. Like, please. A hundred percent. And in 2014, I could even defend what Kelly's rip is saying if Lucy said, yeah, I'm 24. Okay, yeah. The age difference is a little weird and it's a little gross. But, like, at the end of the day, you're two consenting adults. No. This is like just black and white and wrong and disgusting and stop acting like it's okay. Right. Okay. So four years later, 2018, the LA Times reports that five women have accused James Franco of inappropriate or sexually exploitative behavior while Franco had an abusive power.

40:08He was their acting coach. He was their mentor. He had an acting school. And just to like kind of set the scene, the Me Too movement happened in 2017. So this was on the heels of the Me Too movement. So finally, the tides were turning and people were starting to believe women. And this whole reckoning in 2018 broke the same week that he was nominated for a Golden Globe for the disaster artist. And he actually ended up winning for Best Adapted Screenplay. In that same year that that award ceremony was, he wore a Time's Up pin. And that's when the accusers are like, wait a minute, wait a minute.

40:44You're out here on the red carpet showing your support for women of sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual harassment while you were literally assaulting us last year. You fucking idiot. So four of his former students ended up standing together. And another one was like a self-described mentee of his. And they said that, no, you coerced sexual contact and you exploited us. You had exploitative work conditions at your acting school. So just to set the scene as well, James had run a film school in both L.A. and New York City called Studio Four, which abruptly closed just a couple months prior to all of these allegations.

41:16And two of the women were interviewed by the L.A. Times. Their names were Violet Paley and Sarah Tither Kaplan. And they had previously called out James when he had worn that Times up pin at the Golden Globes. And they ended up tweeting more and more allegations, which later were corroborated by the New York Times. And Sarah Tither Kaplan, one of the victims, alleged that during an orgy scene for the unreleased The Long Home, James removed protective plastic guards before simulating oral sex on her. And Sarah was like, looking back, I feel like there was an abuse of power. There was a culture of exploiting non-celebrity women and a culture of women being replaceable.

41:51And Sarah also said that James pressured her into doing two days of nude photo shoots for only$100 a day. So not only are you like exploiting, you're putting us in unsafe work conditions, removing plastic guard, you're using your power and who you are as an actor to push us to doing things that we're not comfortable with, but you're also giving me$100 a day. Like you're a piece of shit. And Violet Paley also said that her and James did, in fact, engage in a consensual relationship, but she felt like there was that dynamic power play in place. And she says that at one point, James had pressured her into performing oral sex on him.

42:27And she's like, looking back, that power dynamic was incredibly off. She said that the actor pushed her head towards his penis. And she said that other women in the acting school received phone calls from James apologizing for his behavior. Like, I'm sorry that all this is coming out. I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable in my acting school, but like all the girls weren't buying it. They're like, you're just saying that because you're being caught. And I'm like trying to think back on like instances of this is where it gets really gray, right? When you talk about sexual assault or women being made to feel uncomfortable, like there are times where I have hooked up with someone and I was like looking back, I'm like, that felt so wrong.

43:03And like, yeah, it was consensual, but I felt coerced. like I was made to feel like I wouldn't be sexy enough or like enough of a woman if I didn't agree to this. Like and then you couple that with a man who is a wealthy A-list actor like you'd be very hard pressed to deny that. I mean, I completely understand where these women are coming from. I think it's that and also the fact that it's their teacher. Like he is he is supposed to be their teacher. He is senior to that. He is not on the same. He's not their peer. Like this is someone that they look up to and that they respect. And yeah, so it's an inappropriate power dynamic.

43:41And then also the fact that he was, I remember this so vividly, the story of him forcing one of his students to give him oral sex. Like he literally forced her. It sounds like it was just, that was an example of it purely not being consensual at all. Right. And it wasn't just the power dynamic at play. It was that she was literally forced to perform a sexual act on him. And then also, you know, with that simulated sex scene where he removed the things that are supposed to protect the woman in those situations, the whatever it's called, the plastic protective guard, like that is assault. Yes. Yeah.

44:19And I think another thing that I haven't mentioned is if he's teaching an acting, if he's a teacher at an acting school, he owns his acting school. You go into that acting school thinking that you're going to have your next big break. James Franco is going to notice me. He's going to put me in movies. I could be a superstar. He was actually not only assaulting these women, but he was telling them like, well, if you don't agree, I'm going to blacklist you. It's like Harvey Weinstein. Yes. It's Harvey Weinstein. It's like, well, if I don't do this, then I'm going to fuck up my entire life and career.

44:48So I have to do it. It's obviously a completely fucked up power dynamic. Yeah. And that is not consensual. Even if they are consenting in the moment, it's because they feel like they have to. Right. It's coercion and it's assault. Another two victims, Hillary Dusam and Natalie Schimmel, described a hostile shoot at a strip club where James allegedly pressured them to remove their tops and grew visibly upset when they declined. And Katie Ryan said that James implied rules were available to those who would perform sexual acts or take their shirts off. So, again, you do this for me, you perform a sexual act, I'll put you in movies.

45:21Super, super wrong. So when all these allegations started to come out, he responded via his attorney who disputed all the allegations. and on the Colbert show, he said that Twitter claims were not accurate while voicing support for women speaking out, adding that if he had done wrong, then he would fix it. James' attorney denied the allegations to the LA Times, though both of the victims, Tither Kaplan and Paley, both said that the actor had reached out and apologized to them for his behavior and directed the publication to Franco's interview on the late show with host Stephen Colbert on Tuesday.

45:50Quote, the things that I heard were on Twitter are not accurate, but I completely support people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn't have a voice for so long. If I've done something wrong, I will fix it. I have to. And I was watching a more recent interview on like a late night talk show. And James kept saying like, I do have my side of the story. And unfortunately, I will not be able to tell my side of the story because that was their experience. And I want to give a platform for their experience because that's important. So it's like you're still kind of basically saying.

46:19You're insinuating, oh, well, there's another side of the story. Yeah. Like they're not telling the truth. Right. Like he knows what he's insinuating. The facts are the facts. There is a position of power. You were blackmailing them and you assaulted them. Yeah. One of the girls said that a couple weeks ago, James offered me and a few other girls an overdue, annoyed, convenient phone apology. I don't accept, but maybe other people's lives would be made easier if he donated all of his earnings from the disaster artist to RAIN 101, which is the Rape and Incest. So what does RAIN stand for? Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network.

46:55Mm-hmm. So ultimately, it didn't just go—it wasn't just Twitter allegations, and then it went away. So all these acting students filed suit against James Franco and the studio for alleging sexual harassment and fraud, and the suit was eventually settled for$2.2 million in 2021. And the complaint alleged that the school functioned as a scheme to supply young female performers that the men could exploit, with students signing away rights to recordings. And in the settlement, Franco and his partners, Vince Jolivet, Jay Davis, and other related entities agreed to pay that settlement out. And the agreement noted that the defendants still denied the allegations, but acknowledged that plaintiffs raised important issues about the mistreatment of women in Hollywood.

47:34In the payout, resolved the fraud and tuition claims. The sexual harassment claims were handled separately, with the individual exploitation claims dropped or dismissed without prejudice. Yeah, and it's like when you think about these girls, they are new to the industry. They haven't broken into the industry yet. So they're like, is this normal? Is this how it works? Like they, you know, they are not established actresses that are able to differentiate between what is normal and what is not and able to say no. And yeah, it's just describing it as like a funnel, a ways of funneling these young girls to be preyed upon by these men is so accurate and like so deeply nefarious and disgusting.

48:17And he's been asked about it. Like, did you start this school to exploit young women? And he's like, no, no, no, no. I did it for the love of the craft. But it's like, I don't know. And he admits he's like, yeah, I did sleep with a lot of my students. But it's like that right there. That right there is not okay. Right. And unfortunately, a lot of blind items or allegations against him aren't just towards women. There is a really triggering blind item that I came across that the New York Post ran in 2008. High, high trigger warning. So back in 2008, the New York Post infamously ran a blind item alleging that an unnamed closeted actor snuck into his ex-boyfriend's apartment and raped him in such a brutal, violent manner that the man was hospitalized.

48:58lies. The paper also claimed that said actor paid his victim$500 ,000 to keep the situation quiet. How do we know this is potentially about James Franco? So James Franco ended up being like, it was presented to him as him. New York Post actually ran the line item saying this is about Franco. Then the gawker picked that up and did, and then, so this is what James said in response. He goes, quote, then gawker picked that up and did this gay rapist story that was so fucking offensive because I have friends who've been raped. They did a very classy online readers poll asking which actor who had a big movie out that summer had beaten up and raped his boyfriend and then paid him off so it wouldn't go to court.

49:33My lawyer called them and said that it was completely untrue and to take it down. They said, well, we're just reporting what the New York Post told us. If James wants to make a comment on our blog, we're happy to report it. It was a choice. Either let this thing build and become bigger and bigger or just let it go and let them be the petty scumbags that they are. But it's like, why are there so many sexual assault allegations against you, James? And it's really actually unfortunate that this happened in 2008. Again, it's a blind item, but it was big enough for James needing to respond to it that this was happening for over a decade until you were finally kind of you had this reckoning.

50:05Right. But this happened. Right. Oh, wait. Like you were running around rampant being an A-list actor for as long as you were with these really, really disgusting, disturbing and violent accusations made against you. Like, how were you in business for that long? How were you as esteemed as you were for as long as you were with all this running around? Can you imagine if it were a woman? No. I mean, they would have been kicked off the curb and never worked again. Um, so in 2021, he did an interview, one of his first substantive interviews, uh, in four years. And he admitted that over the course of his teaching, he did in fact sleep with the students.

50:36He called it wrong, described himself as being a sex addict who'd sought treatment. And I was like, God, that's giving Jax Taylor. I don't have an alcohol problem. I have an, I have an anger problem. It's like, yeah. And also like, just because you're now like taking accountability and like acknowledging what you did was wrong, doesn't make it okay. It's like, all of a sudden it's like, you know what? I did it. I did that. I slept with, you know, my students. I abused my power, but I'm admitting it. So like all is forgiven, right? It's like, no, no, no. Fuck you. Yes. And it's especially like, that's so terrifying to know that if we were to give you your power back and you're becoming the A-list star that you were in 2011, like, who's to say you wouldn't do this again?

51:14He would absolutely do this again. Exactly. Exactly. It's like, this was such a pattern of behavior that went on for years and years and years. Like, just because you got caught, like, we're not going to pretend that all of a sudden you're like, you know, so remorseful. Yeah. And something that he also does to kind of cognitive dissonance himself is he always says that the interactions with him and his students were between two consenting adults. He said that an alcohol recovery sponsor once told him when he was, you know, in his teens that whatever happens between two consenting adults is fine.

51:42And James Franco was like, listen, I kind of ran with that and I used it as an excuse to kind of hook up all over the place. And it's not consent if someone is being coerced. Yes. If someone is like, well, what's going to happen if I say no to this guy? Which obviously you should recognize that as, once again, a really, really, really objectively smart on paper guy that you are abusing your position of power. Duh. Right. And he continues to give excuses about that protective guard that we just mentioned. He's like, listen, I never remove that protective guard and there's footage that proves it.

52:16And I bet you he's probably referring to like, there's probably multiple sex scenes that he was that were part of like his acting school. And he's like, yeah, no, no, no. There's footage that proves that there was a protective guard. It's like, but I'm sure there's many times where you didn't use it. Like, yeah, I'm sure that whatever you're talking about, the footage exists. There's probably also footage that doesn't exist or shows that shows that this victim's claim is, in fact, accurate. Right. Like he just tries to twist himself into a pretzel to make it seem like all these women are wrong when, in fact, it's like, just own it.

52:43Let's see. He said in this interview as well, he uses a lot of buzzwords. He uses things like, you know, when these allegations first came out, my first instinct was to get in front of it, make it stop. And I really had to sit with myself and make sure that I did the work. He keeps saying, I did the work. But I'm unsure. What exact work did you do? What work? What work? Is the work in the room with us? That's why you rack. um if we talk about his relationships and sexuality he's kind of always joked also like not that this has anything to do with the assault but just like some conjecture he's joked that he's a little gay and that he's played queer characters and he's played in queer films like milk interior leather bar soul and remember when he had that weird book of poems called palo alto oh my god yes when he thought he was like such an artiste and he's like yeah my artistic ability extends beyond just like film.

57:20I'm an artist. I'm a writer. I'm a poet. He has this poem called Straight James Gay James. Read it in italics. So random. Wait, where is it? Oh, straight. Okay, I found it. Straight James Gay James. Actor James Franco's new chat book of poems explores the facets of the public and private personas. Straight James Gay James is a poetic buildings Roman, whatever that word is, raw, candid, and uninhibited. James Franco writes about life as an actor, sexuality, questions of identity, gender, family, Gucci, Lana Del Rey, James Dean, and Hollywood. His poetic style varies from the imaginistic to the prosaic.

57:55The chapbook also contains an interview of gay James conducted by straight James. Yes, straight James asked the question, let's get substantial. Are you fucking gay or what? Like, what? It's like manic writing. Like, what are you talking about? But publicly, you know, maybe he is a little bit fluid. He seems to kind of give a nod to this in his book but he's dated like a lot of a lot of women do you remember marla sokoloff you know who she is she plays like the mean girl in every 90s drama wait let me look her up because i'm sure i would i love her and she's so pretty oh yeah yeah yeah i know so he dated her before he was who he was and how sad is this they had like a pretty private relationship they were together for three years but you have to remember when they were together marla was far more famous than James, but how sad is this?

58:42So he notoriously filmed a sex tape with her. It was never released, but he has admitted on camera on like late night shows that he did a sex tape with his girlfriend. And he's like, you know, I never watched that ever again. It was like horrible to rewatch, whatever. But apparently when he would go and start acting and be on site, he would tell Marla, I can't spend time with you. I can't talk on the phone with you. Like I'm in a method acting position. Like I just need to disconnect from my real life and be totally in like my character. So he was like, we're allowed one phone call a month or something absurd like that.

59:12I guess one time she was allowed to visit him on set, on site. When she got on site, apparently everyone on set was talking about the sex tape that they had made. He was like going off and showing it to everyone. This guy's a fucking monster. He's so, he hates women. He does. He does hate women. Gross. Poor Marla Sokoloff. She was in Dude Where's My Car. Yes. Thank you. Thank you. Yes. she was in Do Where's My Car. She played one of the twins. Yes. And she also was in, yeah, she played one of the girlfriends. Yes. Yes. Sugar and Spice. I love that movie. And she was in like a Boy Meets World, I think.

59:51She was like in a lot of Disney, like early Disney movies. Yeah. Yeah. And we talked about this. We did an episode on Patreon about Lindsay Lohan's fuck list, but I just have to talk about James Franco's interactions with Lindsay, he besmirches Lindsay's lame publicly so often. It makes me very uncomfortable. And kind of looking back on how we as a society treated Lindsay Lohan in like 2010s, it was really mean. Like everyone picked on her from Paris Hilton to Hilary Duff to James Franco. But on Howard Stern, Howard Stern confronts James and was like, listen, you're on a list of Lindsay's. Can you speak more to that?

1:00:25And James Franco literally goes, I swear on my mother's life that I never slept with her. she was stalking me at the Chateau Marmont. He's like, I was getting my bachelor's at UCLA. I lived in the bungalows at Chateau Marmont. And I remember I came home late night after like a full night of classes. It was super late. And someone came up to me and was like, hey, Lindsay's having a party. And I was like, I'm not interested. I'm tired. I go back and retire to my bungalow. I fall asleep on the couch. I wake up. Lindsay Lohan's literally standing over my couch, staring at me as I sleep. And she broke into my house and she wanted to like hang out with me.

1:00:56And this sounds so cliche, but I ended up reading her a bedtime story. Like I had to study for a class and I thought might as well kill two birds with one stone. Let me read to Lindsay Lohan. I'm like, you're such a fucking liar. We don't believe you. We don't believe you. Simply don't believe you. Like that is so mean of him to go publicly and say she came into my room and stalked me and was watching me as I slept. Like that's just so horrific for you to say. He doesn't stalk. He's like, you know, I think Lindsay Lohan had a crush on me. And it had been a couple of years since I'd seen her. And, you know, I had my acting school in New York City and she texted me wanting to see me.

1:01:28And I told her, I can't. I have classes all day. You know, I have class, afternoon class, a night class. She said, well, let me come and see you at your class. You know, and I begrudgingly agreed. I was like, yeah, sure. Come to my class. She came to my class and she started accosting everyone, saying, you're not doing this right. You're not doing that right. And it was scaring the students. So I had to kick her out of my school. And I'm like, what is with you? and like publicly humiliating her. And we all know that's not how it went. It's like you probably begged her to come to your school. We don't fucking believe you.

1:01:56Yeah, it's just like, who do you think you are? He was also accused of having an affair with Amber Heard in 2016. There's elevator surveillance footage revealing him visiting her penthouse the night before she filed for divorce. I remember this. I remember this coming out during the trial. Yes, and apparently Johnny Depp had a serious problem with James Franco, according to Amber Heard, that when they were filming, They had like a movie that they did together and Johnny Depp was always very threatened by James Franco. But I think it is clear that they probably did have, you know, something happening between the two of them.

1:02:28Also, do you remember his weird relationship with Ashley Benson when they filmed Spring Breakers? No, but I remember Spring Breakers. Great movie. Okay. They had a very weird, I feel like drug-fueled relationship. This was like so niche. But like back in the day, I've talked about this. I was obsessed with Pretty Little Liars. And I remember she was still filming Pretty Little Liars. and she was also in Spring Breakers with Selena Gomez. And James Franco played this like cornrowed gangster from Florida that was like gonna help them rob whatever place they wanted to rob. Him and Ashley ended up having a relationship afterward.

1:03:00And they even had like a three-way sex scene between him, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Benson in the movie. But Ashley and James did a really weird music video to Boyfriend by Justin Bieber or Ashley Benson played Selena Gomez. and it's like this weird camcorder music video that they posted to the internet it's very nefarious it's like it's there's like red lights being strewn well that's james franco's pretending to be justin bieber he has this like baseball hat on with like a hoodie it's like so weird and disgusting and also james was like in his 30s it's like where do you get off making fun of a fucking 19 year old kid who's doing music video again he's weird he's so fucking weird he's weird you guys need to watch this music video it's very very bizarre and like ashley's like twerking on like the bed.

1:03:44He's like zooming in on our ass. It's like it looks like a sex tape. It's really weird. Okay. Finally, what is he up to these days? So he has started a new TikTok endeavor. Have you has this come across your desk? I saw this. This like just happened, right? Yes. Like over the last three weeks. So James has gone on to TikTok and claimed that he's found an alien in his garage. And this TikTok account released on June 3rd. And he insisted, he's like, listen, I'm not promoting anything. I want to document some serious shit that's going on in my home. James claimed that he saw something not human in his garage when he went there to go and paint at night.

1:04:16And in a follow-up video, James addressed all the cynics in his comments and insisted it wasn't a hoax, he wasn't crazy, and that he was only making videos about this alien that lives in his home and he has proof and he plans to expose it. And not only is he talking about aliens living in his home, but he's also like going into New York City, riding on the subway, taking videos with fans, running through the subway station saying, everybody knows, I gotta go now. It seriously reads like, I don't know, like he has a mental illness. Even weirder, Sophie, is remember? It's romantic. It is manic. Do you remember Shane, the guy that we met at Vanderpump Rules' Sir in West Hollywood in August of last year?

1:04:49Yes. He's in the videos with James. What? Yes. He's knocking on James' door. James opens the video. James is filming him and Shane hanging out. And Shane's like, hey, man, everyone's worried about you. And I don't know. It's like, we've really fallen, James. Oh, I see him. I see him now. Oh, my God. That's so funny. No, it's really. Wait, so people are thinking this is promotion for a movie. Yes. So James is trying to get back into the industry. He's apparently about to be in this new film called Love Meets in the Sunshine. And it's the director's name, which is Christian Guiton. And basically people think, Eagle Eye fans noticed that the new account only followed two people.

1:05:26And one of them being the Love Meets in the Sunshine and the other being the director. And they're like, maybe he's doing this. So I think he's promoting the new movie. I don't think he'll ever come back from where he was. Like, or yeah, I don't think he'll ever return. This is how you age when you're problematic. Because if you look at these TikToks, he looks haggard. And I know that he's just aging and aging is normal, but he looks dehydrated. Yeah, he doesn't look good. And even from looking at videos of him and interviews from 2021, he looks significantly older, even in the last three years.

1:05:58Yeah. I mean, that's what being bored will do to you. I mean, who knows how he's feeling his time. I don't. Yeah. Hopefully he has enough, you know, resistance from all these movies. Hopefully, hopefully is enough going on where he doesn't get bored enough to like traffic women through an acting school again. And also what's crazy is I did a deep dive on Alison Brie and Dave Franco a couple of years ago and I came across Dave's mother's Instagram. She still is like very close with James, which I get like a mother. That's your son. That's your son. I totally get it. But it's so weird because she seems so normal.

1:06:27Like we were just talking about Timothee Chalamet's mother and how normal. Nicole, I love her. I swear to God, James and Dave's mother gives Timothee Chalamet's mom. And I'm like, how is this woman so normal? And her son is such a freak. Betsy. I don't know. It sucks because, my God, when I was looking at some of these edits of James and my, you know, my research, I'm like, my God, he was so fine back in the day. Oh, he really was, unfortunately. Like, so, so fine. But he has a girlfriend he's been dating for years now. And he admits, he's like, listen, there's an 18-year age gap, but I still love her more than I've ever loved anyone else because she's the first girl I've never cheated on.

1:07:02He said, I cheated on everyone before Isabel. That's what they always say. He's going to end up cheating on her, too. I know. And then randomly, I swear to God, once you see something, you can't unsee it. I was scrolling Instagram, and a makeup artist posted a look that she did for Madeline Klein. And I was like, oh, who's this makeup artist? I went to this makeup artist page, and her only client is Isabel Paxod. Isabel Paxod. Oh, my God. That's James Franco's long-time friend. Yes. I'm like, wait. Because I was looking at her. I'm like, wait. is that james franco's girlfriend that i've been doing research on the last week oh my god it's like just so random so random um she's like a small time actress she's done like a couple films but she's never been like any shows she's like more of like uh maybe just so it does she she does more so plays not like mainstream television but yeah they've been together for a while she's born 96 so she's like late 20s and he's nearly wait late 20s early 30s yeah yeah that's 28 and he's 48.

1:07:57Yeah. So she's like 30 and he's 48. That's an 18 year age difference. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my God. He is so disturbed. And they've been dating since 2017. So she was in her early 20s. She was like 21 when they first started dating. Gross. It's gross. I'm sorry. And he's he says he's addicted to validation from women. So again like this is probably a pattern for him that he's going to continue doing is seeking out younger and younger women. Wait, I'm like actually so gross that you just put it in that frame of reference. You're right. If they've been together since 2017, he met her when she was like 21.

1:08:34Yeah. It's like, it's literally Nick Vile, Natalie Joy, but like slightly better because Natalie Joy was 19. Yeah. Three under three. But three under three, but it's an 18 year age gap. Like, I'm sorry, that is not great. No. And you know what? 18 year age gaps when, like if they met now, I'd be like, sure. But meeting when you are either a teenager or early 20s before your frontal lobe is developed, it does feel like an imbalance of like something. Something is. Something is off. Something is off. I'm sorry. You will never have me. Like, I know that they're two consenting adults. I get that. Totally.

1:09:08Like, she is technically of age and it's better than him being with one of the 17-year-olds like he's done in the past. But it's still just like gross to me. I'm sorry. It's gross. Like, find someone your own age. No, I'm telling you, that is so incredibly disturbing to me. My friend from my old work who has a 21-year-old son. Like, that's actually disgusting. I look at him and I'm like, you were middle school. Think about yourself as a 21-year-old. Like, we were children. Literally children. I didn't know how to regulate my emotions. I was still a child. I still basically was a teenager. I'm sorry.

1:09:40Like, that's a child. Agreed. It's incredibly disturbing. And we want nothing but bad things for James Franco. Still love Dave, though. I mean, he will continue to be my number one crush. Still love Dave, but fuck James. Who would have thought that, like, you know, when Dave first came out of the scene, we were like, you're just James Franco's little bro. 21 Jump Street. Who would have thought 21 Jump Street is so fucking good? By the way, did you see the announcement for 24 Jump Street? Oh, my God. That's one movie series that I've seen every single movie. Oh, my God. So good. So, like, they did 21, then 22, and then they skipped 23.

1:10:15And now they're just going straight to 23. No, there wasn't a 23. They're going straight to 24. Wait, that's so funny. It's written by Jonah Hill. So funny. And also, every time, do you guys know that I'm obsessed with Erling Haaland, the soccer player? The fuck-ass bun. With the fuck-ass bun. And the Norwegian, like, Viking guy. And he's been doing this series with Channing Tatum, like, dressed as him with a blonde ponytail. And Channing Tatum also is so fucking funny. Like, he's underratedly a very gifted comedic actor. No, I completely agree. And, you know, last night, I was, you know, scrolling TikTok.

1:10:47And another one who's hilarious that we've talked about before, Leo. Like you and I would queen out. Yeah. Like, have you seen that clip of Leo? He's like, he's like at a press junket and they're like, oh, I have a question. And he goes, I can't see you. Oh, now I can see you. Have you seen that? No, it's not. Oh, my God. I can't. Oh, there you are. Hi. Hi. It's so funny. Hi. Yeah. 21 Jump Street is one of my favorite movies ever. It really never gets old. Like that is. Find the dealer. Take the supplier. Wait, no, it's. Find the dealer. What is it? Wait. Hold on. Let me look it up. Find the dealer.

1:11:23Infiltrate the supplier. Yeah, yeah. No, it's infiltrate the dealers. Find the supplier. I distinctly remember where I was when I first watched that movie. Oh, my God. I was crying, laughing. It's so fucking funny. Now I want to watch it. Now I want to watch it. Rob Riggle. Rob Riggle cracks me up. I love him. He's the one that's in that trailer for the new Jimmy Stewart movie with KJ Apa. Oh, my God. Where KJ Apa goes, I deserve to serve my country just like anyone else does. And then pans to Rob Riegel and he goes, America can't lose Jimmy Stewart. Honestly. And it's like, this is a comedy. If you have Rob Riegel in the movie, it's a comedy.

1:12:06KJ Apa really thought he was doing his big one. He thought he was going to be like Elvis or whatever. He probably thinks he's going to be nominated for an Oscar. Stop. No, it's like sad. Don't you think? It is sad. But apparently people are like, oh, my God, he did a really good job with the accent. I'm like, OK, whatever you say. Is the accent in the room? Well, it's like, I guess Jimmy Stewart had this accent. Like, I don't know. Like, I don't know what Jimmy Stewart sounded like in the 1940s. But apparently he's nailing it. Oh, I'm still laughing over the bonus Jonas. Oh, Frankie Jonas. I didn't.

1:12:37I can't take credit for that. That's what everyone calls him, I thought. That's so fucking funny. The bonus Jonas. Oh, my God. So funny. OK, well, you guys, we love you so much. Yesterday on Patreon, we talked. Well, do you want to cover it, Sophie? We talked about the 1996 Mount Everest disaster on Patreon yesterday. This has become like my new hyper fixation. So that was if you're into like the true crime stories that we do or like the disaster stories that we do, that will be of interest to you. And yeah, so the link to our Patreon is in our show notes. Same with our Friday newsletter that goes out every Friday.

1:13:16And yeah, we will see you guys next week. See you guys next week. Bye.

1:13:37Your home design should feel like you. And if it doesn't, it's not because you have bad taste. It might just be a budget problem. Well, Wayfair fixes that.

1:14:12It became an absolute eyesore. So I searched for closed wicker laundry bins on wafer that could hide the mess and add like a chic beachy touch to our bedroom. And I found the perfect one for under$100. It seriously was such an upgrade to our bedroom aesthetically and functionally. It's hard to even describe it or put it into words. And it's little purchases like that that can make all the difference in your space. Ready to upgrade your home for way less? Head to Wayfair.com right now to shop all things home and get your space ready for less. That's W-A-Y-F-A-I-R.com. Wayfair, every style, every home.

1:14:48The weather has been beautiful lately, which means I'm pretty much always out and about doing things. Errands, workouts, beach days, you name it. And of course, I need clothes that can actually keep up with all of that. That's why I joined Fabletics as a VIP. It completely changed how I shop and refresh my wardrobe when it needs an upgrade. New VIPs unlock major savings on their first purchase, so stocking up on practical, comfortable, and cute pieces doesn't feel like some major splurge. When I signed up as a new VIP with Fabletics, I got 70-80 % off everything. It made it super easy to grab multiple matching sets, shorts, tanks, and lounge pieces for summer without overthinking it.

1:15:26And genuinely, you guys, the quality is so good. Fabletics pieces feel like ultra luxe activewear you'd expect from those other high-end brands, you know the ones, but without the hefty price tag. These pieces are built to actually last, and I love that for me. My absolute favorite piece I've gotten is the anywhere cropped bra tank. It's the perfect workout top that I can throw on for a workout or to just record, run errands, go to lunch, everything in between. I love how easy getting dressed is with Fabletics, and how put together I look without having to actually think about it. Shop now at fabletics.com slash snark to get 70 to 80 % off everything when you sign up as a new VIP.

Again, that's fabletics.com slash snark for 70 to 80 % off everything as a new VIP. I've been a diehard TaskRabbit stan long before they were a sponsor. I cannot remember the last time I moved without enlisting a tasker, whether it was for assembling furniture, mounting a TV, hanging artwork or shelves, the list goes on. And it's not just during a move where your to-do list can feel like it's 10 pages long. Sometimes I really just need an extra hand for those little things I feel like I never end up getting around to myself, like hanging the collage wall I promised myself I'd do for months.

1:16:36Wherever you are, TaskRabbit is here to help. TaskRabbit connects you with skilled taskers in your area for moving, furniture assembly, home repairs, yard work, mounting, you name it. You can search for a tasker based on cost, skill set, availability, and past client reviews so you know exactly who's showing up and can have confidence they know what they're doing. Taskers have assembled over 3.4 million pieces of furniture, completed 700 ,000 home repairs, handled 1.5 million moves, and counting. It's okay to ask for help with your to-do list. In fact, it's the most efficient way to get things done, in my humble opinion.

1:17:09When life happens, your to-do list grows. Get ahead of it now and get$15 off your first task at TaskRabbit.com or on the TaskRabbit app using promo code SNARK. Nothing makes you appreciate good bedding more than a hot summer night, especially when your air conditioning is broken like ours was recently. I don't want to talk about it. Having something that's lightweight, breathable, cool, and easy to sleep in, no matter how hot it gets, is so freaking important.

1:17:41That's why I love quince. It's been my go-to for bedding for so long now, with high-quality materials like 100 % European linen and organic cotton. You can literally feel the difference. I love waking up not sweaty. Quince has everything you need to make your bed feel cooler, lighter, and more comfortable for summer. From breathable sheets to linen shams and duvet covers in soft, seasonal colors, relaxed stripes, and timeless neutrals. My absolute favorite is their 100 % organic cotton percale sheets and duvet cover. The material is so crisp and comfy and even has a cooling effect, which is obviously perfect for those hot summer nights.

1:18:14I also love the look of it. It's a soft gray gingham and just has this classic look that instantly elevates our bedroom. And I love knowing that we're sleeping on 100 % cotton and not some cheap polyester blend. I also love their mulberry silk pillowcases and eye masks. They help keep your hair smooth and skin hydrated overnight because they don't absorb your natural oils like other materials do. Quince bedding is made for literal beauty sleep, you guys. And in case you need a reminder, everything at Quince is 50 to 80 % less than similar brands because they work directly with ethical manufacturers and cut out the middleman.

Well, now, I was looking for fun ways to tell you that Mint's offer of unlimited premium wireless for$15 a month is back. So I thought it would be fun if we made$15 bills. But it turns out that's very illegal. So there goes my big idea for the commercial.

1:19:23Give it a try at mintmobile.com slash switch. Upfront payment of$45 for three months,$90 for six months, or$180 for 12-month plan required. $15 per month equivalent. Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only. Greater than 50 gigabytes may slow when network is busy. See terms.
