In short
The podcast episode examines Perez Hilton’s rise as a pop-culture gossip “gatekeeper,” then catalogs his controversies—especially misogyny, fat-shaming, outing celebrities, and sexualized/tabloid attacks on young women—along with where he is now.
Guest backgrounds
The hosts are Christy and Sophie (millennial pop-culture fans who say they grew up refreshing PerezHilton.com and also followed Dlisted). No other guests are named in the transcript.
Key claims
Perez Hilton (Mario Armando Lavendiera Jr., born 1978 in Miami) built his brand on celebrity access plus mean-spirited, often misogynistic captions and edited images. The hosts argue his “visibility” logic for outing people is harmful. They also claim his “I’ll be nicer” rebrand after backlash was too little, too late.
Notable examples
Vanessa Hudgens nude-photo sharing; claims about Miley Cyrus (17) “upskirt” imagery; Britney Spears insults during 2007 breakdown; calling Miss USA Carrie Prejean a “dumb bitch” after same-sex marriage comments; Will.i.am incident involving a homophobic slur; outing Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris; Khloe Kardashian calling him her “personal bully”; TikTok bans and Charlie D’Amelio plea; memoir TMI (2020) and his surrogacy children.

0:29Christy Noel:Hey, everybody. Welcome back to another episode of Snarkbait. I'm Christy. I'm Sophie. And today we are covering someone who, unfortunately, it's embarrassing to say, kind of raised me and Christy. Oh, it's so embarrassing to say. I'm so sorry. Please don't judge us. But as millennials who love pop culture, there's a lot to say about Perez Hilton. So let's get into it. His background, his blog, his many, many controversies, and where he's at today. Are you ready, Christy? Let's do it.
1:12Hi, Christy. Hey, Sophie. How are you? I am good. How are you doing on this lovely, We're recording on Sunday, July 20th.
1:22Christy Noel:We're in the past and I'm doing pretty well. We had like big family day. My cousin came in from Hong Kong and me and like all the girly pop cousins hung out with all the kids. And it was really sweet to see like my four-year-old nephew hang out with little Monroe, who's like five months. It's just like really sweet. It's like the first time we see our generation have kids and it's something very, very special. And honestly, as an aunt, I love that I can just be cool and fun and play with them and then just like walk away. And then I spent all night watching Idaho 4 documentary, which if you guys don't already know, we're going to do an Idaho 4 documentary.
2:01Christy Noel:I mean, Idaho 4 episode on the Patreon, patreon.com slash snarkbait pod in a couple weeks here. So God, that case is crazy. That was actually one of the best docuseries I've ever watched. The one on Prime. The Peacock one was whatever. This four-part series on Prime was so well done, and it made you feel like you knew. It focused more on the victims. I felt like the Peacock documentary focused too much on Brian Koberger. This one focused so much on the victims, and Ethan's parents participated, Maddie's mom participated, and you felt like you really knew the victims. Yeah, we've heard so much from Steve Gonsalves because he's been kind of at the front end of the press, but we rarely hear from Maddie Mogan's mother and from the Chapin's.
2:44Christy Noel:The Chapin's have been a little bit more vocal, but I haven't really heard much from Maddie's mother. So yeah, we'll be covering really the entire case end to end on the Patreon. So I don't want to say I'm excited about it. It's, there's a lot, so much information has come out over the last couple of weeks. So we decided this is kind of a good time for us to cover it. But how was your weekend at the shore? It was good. It was, you know, not the best weather. We kind of had a rainy day yesterday on Saturday, which was a bummer, but it was perfect for me to just kind of like snuggle up and work on my Perez Hilton research, which this is an episode that we're both really excited about because Christy and I unfortunately grew up on PerezHilton.com like many of us millennial pop culture lovers.
3:29So he is someone that is kind of just, I don't want to say near and dear to our hearts because he's a really bad person, but just someone that we grew up with, unfortunately. But yeah, there's a lot of lore. There's a lot of controversies. So there's a lot to squeeze in. So I feel like we should like get right to it. Christy, yeah. You also, we talked about this just as millennial pop culture lovers. We kind of grew up on him and you were kind of the same way, like reading him every day after school, refreshing his blog, that pink, pink blog.
4:03Christy Noel:Yeah, with the sunglasses that lives fully ingrained in my memory. Yeah, I was really obsessed with the website, the blog back when we were on our desktop computers and didn't have iPhones to give us news 24 seven. But I remember refreshing the website every couple of hours just to see what was going on in the pop culture celebrity universe. And he was the first of his time to he was like the TMZ before TMZ was a thing. And I think the one thing that me, you and Jordan have all kind of related on was we're all kind of around the same age. And we really grew up with his website. Did you read D listed also D listed.com?
4:44Oh, my God. My sister and I were obsessed with D listed also. And it was also just like a celebrity gossip blog. But the blogger behind it. He was just named Michael. He was kind of like this anonymous, mysterious figure. He was so funny. He called Prince Harry, like Prince hot ginge. He had like really funny nicknames for all. I know that like, doesn't sound that funny when I just say it, but like he had really funny nicknames for all of these celebrities. And my sister and I were like obsessed with his blog. So D listed Perez Hilton and just like the tabloid, my mom would get like the weekly people magazine in the mail.
5:19And then we also would go to, you know, the grocery store. we would always pick up in touch and us weekly and star magazine. And then every time we, we traveled like at the airport, that was like our airplane reading. I got it from my mom also. Like we were just obsessed. My mom, my sister and I just with all of the celeb gossip all the time. And that is why I am the way I am, I guess.
5:42Christy Noel:Wait, that's so interesting to hear that. It's like a, it's a linear, a genetic thing. Like I didn't realize that your mom too was into celebrity pop culture because my mom wasn't like that. I don't know where it came from. All the tabloids all the time. I'd be like, are you done? Like we would pass around like the weekly people magazine. We'd be like, oh, are you done with it? And then it would be like my turn. Let me know if you guys were the same way growing up between tabloids and Perez. I imagine that many of our listeners were the same way. Like we're all kind of obsessed with pop culture, but Perez was definitely one of, he was like a gateway drug into pop culture.
6:16And I was just, I was around like 12 when he launched his blog, I think. So we were really young, but let's get into kind of his background. So Perez, surprisingly, it's not his birth name, Perez Hilton. He was born Mario Armando Lavendiera Jr. on March 23rd, 1978, only four days before my birthday. So he is a Pisces Aries cusp, which I feel like tracks for him. The Aries definitely tracks. And he was born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents. They were actually Cuban exiles. And he was raised in a Spanish-speaking Catholic religious household. And he was raised in both Little Havana and Westchester, both neighborhoods within the Miami area.
7:00Which, side note, I love how there's a Westchester in every major metropolitan city. There's a Westchester, Pennsylvania, outside of Philly. There's a Westchester area of Cincinnati. There's Westchester, New York. Like, why are there so many Westchesters?
7:12Christy Noel:It sounds so upper middle class. Maybe it's just an East Coast thing because I was thinking about this while I was, I was like, why are there West Chesters everywhere? Anyway, he attended Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in all boys Catholic school in Miami, where he graduated valedictorian. Actually, he was a very high achieving student. He said before that he realized he was gay as a child, but kind of struggled with coming out due to his conservative religious upbringing. It's not clear exactly when he came out, but he knew at a young age that he was gay. He ended up getting a full scholarship to NYU where he majored in drama because he was actually an aspiring actor.
7:51Did you know that, Christy?
7:52Christy Noel:No, but that totally tracks. Someone who's in the celebrity pop culture world, if you can't join them, teach them. What's that saying? If you can't beat them, join them. Those who can't do, teach. Exactly. That's, yes, thank you. Whatever we're trying, dumb and dumber over here. But he was also kind of interested in becoming a journalist. Either way, he was obsessed with Hollywood, the glamour, the glitz, Tinseltown, if you will. And after graduating NYU in 2000, he briefly attempted this career as an actor, didn't have a whole lot of success. So he worked a number of odd jobs in the meantime.
8:30He was a receptionist for a New York City gay events club. He was briefly the managing editor of Instinct, a gay men's magazine. He was a media relations assistant for the LGBT rights organization, GLAAD. And this was before he ultimately started his blog in 2004. And did you know that he called it Perez Hilton, obviously, as a satirical play on the name Paris Hilton, who was the celebrity of the moment?
8:59Christy Noel:Yeah, this was around the simple life-ish times. And Paris Hilton was on top of the world. Like you literally could not open any tabloid or go on Perez Hilton without seeing her face. This was like peak Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears era. And I just I had a feeling like it was obviously play on. Yeah, it's pretty obvious. But the name Perez reflects his Latino Cuban heritage. And, you know, soon this kind of became his alter ego. And he explains it later that it was kind of almost like a defense mechanism using this pseudonym instead of his real name. It kind of protected him from criticism or backlash.
9:39I think that he was deeply insecure. He still is. He always has been. But especially at this time, I think that he was someone that was really insecure and that this was kind of his alter ego. And of the blog name, he said, I just thought it was funny. Like, I never imagined it would blow up into what it ultimately became. something that was unique about his blog at the time was that it really reflected this unapologetic desire to mingle with and be associated with celebrities, hence the name. But he wasn't just someone that, I mean, he was an outsider. He was on the outside looking in, but then he often would be at some of these celebrity events and post pictures with celebrities.
10:19And he would comment on everything celebrity related from paparazzi shots to award shows. And again, would even attend some of these industry events himself. Like I said, I was so obsessed with Perez Hilton growing up. I remember this so vividly. I would get all the tea. And this was just such a gateway drug for so many middle schoolers like myself and like you.
10:45Christy Noel:Yeah, I remember distinctly when Amanda Bynes was going through her meltdown and I think 2012, because I was still in college. And I remember vividly, like ferociously updating, refreshing that website to see what the latest was. I remember she was throwing like a bong outside of her New York City apartment. She was going outside in wigs. And I remember he was the only person who had moment by moment updates of these celebrities. And it was addicting. You're right. It was like a gateway drug. because he would refresh it so frequently that you had every opportunity to know what was going on with your favorite celebrities at any point in time.
11:22Christy Noel:And honestly, I remember the Lindsay Lohan downfall when she was caught like stealing jewelry from stores and she was, you know, stumbling at clubs. Remember the knife picture? With Vanessa Milano. Was that who it was with? Yes, who's now married to Nick Lachey. Oh, Vanessa Lachey. What was her maiden name? Milano, right? Vanessa. Oh my God. I think you're right. Yes. Oh my God. What a time. Yeah. Vanessa Manilo. Manilo. Yes. So he had all of these photos before anyone else. Again, I don't even think TMZ was a thing or if they were, it wasn't nearly as popular as Perez. Yes. And like you said, he was just updating it so frequently.
12:07He was just, I don't know how he had time for anything else. Like he, the amount of the sheer breadth of blog posts that he put out, like he was just prolific. And if you read his blog, you remember that he definitely had it out for certain celebrities. He had favorites and he had people that he hated. And of course, everyone he hated, they were women, obviously. That was a huge part of his blog was just sheer misogyny. He did not like Vanessa Hudgens, Khloe Kardashian. he was extremely, extremely mean about. And she eventually, we will get to this, but ultimately called him out at one point. Miley Cyrus, Taylor Momsen.
12:50And he had an affinity for other celebrities like Paris Hilton was one of his faves. Lady Gaga, before they had a falling out. Sophia Bush, et cetera.
13:01Christy Noel:I remember him really being vicious about Taylor Momsen for some reason. Like that really, I forgot about that. But this is when Gossip Girl was a huge thing in like 2008, 2009. Yeah, he would viciously attack Taylor Momsen for everything. He hated her, hated. And that was kind of his style, was being so, so, so mean to some of these celebrities he didn't like. Really inappropriate, misogynistic, mean captions, the illustrations of penises and jizz on top of the celebrity photos, powder under their noses, you know, the little white. He would use like MS paint. and do the little like white font.
13:41He'd scroll things like Coke slut, whore, Coke head over images of Lindsay Lohan, Amy Winehouse. May she rest in peace. He referred to Misha Barton as mushy fartone.
13:52Christy Noel:Oh my God. I remember him always calling her mushy. That's like a core memory. So fucking mean. And now I'm putting that together, what that means is because she was like, quote unquote bigger. She had gained some weight after the OC. He was so mean. He was so misogynistic. He was so fat phobic. Did you watch, sorry to interrupt, but did you watch The Hill's New Beginnings? Yes, I'm so glad you added this to the notes because I was like, oh my God, I forgot about that when Misha ended up confronting him. Yes, and like you mentioned, she was hated to like the nth degree. I feel like she was one of the most hated people on his blog and he was at a party that Spencer Pratt was hosting.
14:34Christy Noel:And of course, Misha was on The Hill's New Beginning season one. And so it was part of our storyline to approach Perez Hilton face to face. And she basically, I had to rewatch the clip because I was like, I was forgetting what exactly she said. So I went on TikTok like 30 minutes ago and just looked and she basically said, you really body shamed me. You were outing celebrities before they were out of the closet. What you were doing was really mean spirited. And Perez was trying to take the high road and he was basically saying, you know, I think you're speaking on behalf of so many other celebrities that were abused on my blog.
15:03Christy Noel:Like I really apologize. and Misha basically was like, I don't accept your apology. It was vicious what you used to do to me when I was so young. And I'm glad that she, as Justin Bieber would say, stood on business.
15:20Guys, you know we swear by One Skin Skin Care and now they have a newly launched scalp serum, OS01 hair. Christy and I are both obsessed with it. I've been using it since they launched it just a few months ago. And if you're familiar with OneSkin, which I hope you guys are by now, you know about their patented OS01 peptide and how it's scientifically proven to target aging at the cellular level. We love that for us. It's what powers all of their skin and sun care products. And now it's targeting age-related hair loss and thinning. And the OS01 scalp serum is already getting rave reviews, including from us.
15:57My hair has never felt this thick and full in my scalp, which unfortunately often gets sun damage during the summer. has never felt healthier. And it's not just me. OneSkin scientists did a clinical study showing that after just six months, participants had significantly thicker and denser hair. And if you're ready to give OSO on hair a try, you can get 15 % off your first three months supply with code snark at oneskin.co. OneSkin is the world's first skin longevity company. 16:49Yeah, I'm good for her. He was absolutely vicious. And it was very like of the times. That was what the early 2000s were like for especially female celebrities. The fat phobia of it all was crazy, especially considering his own struggle with his weight. He went from like being over 200 pounds to down to 160-ish pounds in 2004. He was just like so fucking mean. It was wild. But again, like this was the early 2000s. not to like make excuses for him, but the tabloids were also this way too. Do you remember like, remember when Jessica Simpson wore those jeans? Oh my, at the cookout? She was performing.
17:34Remember she wore, it was like that barbecue. I think it was like a barbecue. Yeah, and she was performing and she was wearing those bell bottoms with like a leopard belt and she looked great. But for some reason, everyone acted like she was the fattest person who's ever lived.
17:47Christy Noel:And like thinking back and now I'm more familiar with Instagram Eagles, anyone would have looked quote unquote and I'm putting this in quotes bigger because of the way that the angle was it was taken from the bottom but she like didn't even look but she didn't even look big like she didn't even look bad agreed she looked great but I think people we were so desensitized to how we talked about women's bodies that we were so used to her being like size triple zero in Daisy Dukes and Dukes of Hazzard that we were just like how dare a woman you know rock this look and look bigger and I remember in Jessica Simpson's book she said the saddest part of that was she loved her fit that day she thought she looked fabulous she did took her down she looked so fucking good but again this was like the early 2000s where we're used to you know stick thin heroin chic this was still it was kind of like that 90s early 2000s supermodel body type that was all the rage Kate Moss Nicole Richie um Lindsay Lohan back then they were everyone was so thin and like god forbid you were a celebrity who was paparazzi on the beach and had a little bit of cellulite you would be on the cover of every tabloid with the words she's let herself go remember when tyra tyra banks who by the way we have a tyra episode on the calendar which is very exciting but remember when tyra said kiss my fat ass i loved to the Tyra show.
19:16Christy Noel:To be very clear, after high school, I would come home and I would watch it. I was obsessed. Oh my God, you would. I loved ANTM. I was like ride or die ANTM. But Perez, despite being so mean and biting and horrible, was so influential at the time. He was this massive, massive voice in the pop culture space. And he was rewarded again and again for his mean-spirited behavior. Readers loved it. So did entertainment execs. I have no memory of this. And you wrote down that you don't either, but he got his own TV show on VH1 in 2007 called What Perez Says. I have no memory of this. So I don't know where I was.
19:59Must have flopped, but it was like, I think it was like a six episode mini series. Also in 2007, he was a contested on MTV celebrity rap superstar. He appeared in music videos for Simple Plan, the Pussycat Dolls, Rihanna, and so on. Like he was mingling with celebrities all the time. He also, do you remember on Keeping Up with the Kardashians? He was like at one of the parties in the first season, like with Kim and Chris. And not that like they were huge celebrities in season one of the Kardashians, but like he was just always everywhere, like on the scene, on all of these reality shows. In 2008, his nationally syndicated radio show Radio Perez premiered.
20:36He also appeared on the Howard Stern show. He also appeared on Kathy Griffin, my life on the D list, which I loved that show. I need to rewatch it because it's on Peacock. He also appeared on Paris Hilton's my new BFF.
20:48Christy Noel:I loved that show. Did you watch that show, Sophie? Yes. I barely remember it, but like, yes, like it was so stupid. I don't know why I loved it, but I wonder if they're still friends, Paris and the girl that won. No, they're not. They had a huge falling out. See, this is the shit that my brain remembers. They had a huge falling out a year after the show aired. Yeah. I need all of the lore about that. TRL Extra. In 2008, he co-hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards. 2009, he presented at the Much Music Video Awards in Toronto. Also in 2009, he served as a judge for Miss USA. Oh God. Do you remember this controversy?

21:26Christy Noel:Well, that's the last person I would want judging my body. No, yeah. He asked Miss California, USA, Carrie Prejean, Prejean, whatever. It's been a while since I've heard this name, but I remember this was such a thing when this happened, whether she believed every state should legalize same sex marriage. Remember, this was also 2009. This was like Obama's first term still. And she responded that marriage is between a man and a woman. Perez said this question lost her the competition. And he later referred to her as a dumb bitch on his blog. Both of them got backlash for this. Like she got backlash for her answer, but also at the same time, people were like, it's a free country, free speech.
22:06Again, this was like before same sex marriage had been legalized. This was Obama's first term. Like it was a different time. So she had a lot of defenders also. And then people were like, you're calling her a dumb bitch. Like you can say your part without using a misogynistic slur.
22:21Christy Noel:Right. Right. And this was around the time of prop eight. Do you, do you remember that? Yes. No, Hey prop eight. Yeah. Yes. Yes, you're right. Also in 2009, he released his first book, Red Carpet Suicide, a survival guide on keeping up with the Hiltons. And it was all about, you know, how to chase fame and celebrity. And his second book, Perez Hilton's true bloggywood stories, the glamorous life of beating, cheating, and overdosing. In 2011, he released his third book, a children's book titled The Boy with Pink Hair. He said it was inspired by his own childhood. I've always considered myself a freak, an outsider, and a bit of an interloper.
22:59I never really fit in with any group, so I just did my own thing. That's what he said inspired the book. In 2015, he took part as a housemate on Celebrity Big Brother and was the seventh celebrity evicted. I never watched Celebrity Big Brother or regular Big Brother. Likewise, yeah. It's a blind spot. Yeah, I don't have the time. Also in 2015, he launched the Perez Hilton podcast with Chris Booker, which still airs today, a decade later. in 2017 he won worst cooks in america season 11 and in 2020 he was permanently at the time permanently banned from tiktok at 1.6 million followers it's unclear exactly what did him in but it's funny because he was like he always picks new female celebrities to bully and be mean to even though he likes to pretend that he's a changed man all the time he was really mean to and about Charlie D 'Amelio.
23:51And after he got banned from TikTok, he released a video of himself crying and begging Charlie for help getting his TikTok reinstated.
23:59Christy Noel:And Charlie was what? How old at this time? Like 15? A teenager. A teenager. What? He's such a weirdo. Why do you hate someone who's a teenager? Like he's such a freak. Exactly. Exactly. Such a freak. He ended up returning to the platform but was banned again just a few months ago, like earlier this year. In 2020, he also published his memoir, TMI, My Life and Scandal. And he also has three children born via surrogacy, a son born in 2013 and two daughters born in 2015 and 2017. And he actually has gotten criticism for saying that he hopes his son Mario is heterosexual because it would, quote unquote, be easier than being homosexual.
24:39And said he wouldn't sign Mario up for dance class because dance class might make him gay.
24:44Christy Noel:Do you know what this reminds me of? Have you seen The Family Stone? Yes. Yes. Oh, my God. The Family Stone I watch literally once a year. No, I would watch it today in July. It is so cringy. It reminds me of that scene where Sarah Jessica Parker's character says, well, you know, no one would hope for their son to be gay because it'll just make their life more challenging. Yeah. Yeah. You don't want them to have to face adversity if, you know. And she keeps digging herself a hole at the table with the gay brother. Oh, my God. You guys, the cringiest but best movie of all time. It's so good. But that's what this is reminding me of, like him being Sarah Jessica Parker.
25:21Christy Noel:Like, well, why? I'm just saying if he had a choice when you want them to be normal. Meanwhile, I'm like, I want my sons to be gay. Me and my girlfriend say that all the time. All the time. All we would hope for a gay son. Please. So as for his many, many controversies, speaking of being gay, something that Perez is known for is outing celebrities back in the day. So since he has, you know, for the most part, always been somewhat open about his sexuality, he thinks that outing closeted celebrities is like somehow righteous, which if you go back to what he said about his religious upbringing, he also was a little trepidatious about coming out because he had such a conservative religious upbringing.
26:08So the fact that he's like, I'm going to drag these celebrities out of the closet, which is something that he actually has said, that he drags celebrities out of the closet, kicking and screaming because he thinks that it's better for the world.
26:20Christy Noel:There's going to be some like projected shit about that. Yeah, it's like a self-hatred. He's projecting to force people to also hate themselves before they're ready to make the decision. Is there something there psychologically with him that's not right? I would definitely agree with that. He was partially responsible for outing both Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris around 2006 after frequently speculating about both of their sexualities and before either of them had ever come out of the closet. He told Access Hollywood after getting criticism for, you know, this practice about speculating constantly about the sexuality of closeted celebrities.
26:55He said, it upsets me that people think what I'm doing is a bad thing. I don't think it's a bad thing. If you know something to be a fact, why not report it? Why is that still taboo? And he also said, I know there is some controversy about outing people, but I also believe the only way we are going to have change is with visibility. And if I have to drag some people screaming out of the closet, then I will. I think that lots of celebrities have an archaic fear that being gay will hurt their career. But look at Rosie. Look at Ellen. And that was he said that to midweek politics.
27:27Christy Noel:Yeah, because every person who gets dragged out of the closet will will see success like Rosie and Ellen. Exactly. What? What kind of analogy is that? Outing someone is evil. Obviously that goes without saying you are robbing someone of their agency. It's 100 % a personal choice. When, if someone wants to come out, just like with Perez, when he was coming out, no one forced him to come out to his Catholic conservative family. He got to do it on his own time. And like you said, like not every celebrity, unfortunately is going to have an amazing thriving career as a gay celebrity, like Rosie and Ellen.
28:05It can actually put, unfortunately, some celebrities will see it as like, you are putting my career at risk if you out me because they're worried about how it'll affect opportunities. We do still live in kind of a bigoted world. Think about how many leading men today in Hollywood are openly gay and getting, you know, roles as leading men.
28:27Christy Noel:I mean, I would be curious to see if anyone has a legitimate answer. Jonathan Bailey. Jonathan Bailey is like the one I can think of. I was going to say Jonathan Bailey was the first person that came to mind. Yeah. I'm trying to think of anyone else. That guy, he hasn't gotten how many roles since 13 Reasons Why, but like the heartthrob in 13 Reasons Why. I was obsessed with him. I saw him. I think I told you this. I saw him at Outside Lands when I lived in San Francisco and I was like - Brandon Flynn. Brandon Flynn. I saw him in line and me and my friend were like going to the back of the line because there's like a huge freaking line like twisted around the entire encampment or whatever.
29:03Christy Noel:and I stopped dead on my tracks like and I go oh that's Brandon Flynn and I turned around and I went up to him he was so high he was so high remember he dated Sam Smith of course I remember when he dated Sam Smith that photo of them in New York City on the street and they were making out I was so happy I love them as a couple but yeah he's cute yeah we're like I want him I want to see him in more stuff I feel like he kind of disappeared after 13 reasons why I really wanted him and Anthony Porowski I thought they would be a very attractive couple and I remember when Anthony and like his boyfriend had broken up at one point years ago I commented on like the E!
29:41Christy Noel:News headline and I went at Brandon Flynn and like all my friends were like dude what the hell are you doing oh my god weird ass so weird they're like you're so fucking weird did I just see you comment on people's thing oh I love yeah he's cute but again it's like there's a reason why unfortunately a lot of these celebrities choose to stay in the closet because they're worried about their career opportunities. Because again, we can barely name two celebrities. Let us know too in the comments if you can think of any. Yeah. Let us know. Earlier this year, actually, Matt Bomer did an interview. I think it was with, yeah, without magazine.
30:15And he said that his early career was stolen, quote unquote, by Perez. He said it was a time when folks could kind of take over your own personal narrative before you even had a chance to. I remember outlets like Perez Hilton talking about my personal life before I even ever had a chance to even do it myself. And he says, I wasn't even like really in the closet per se. He just was still figuring it out. And he said, you know, it wasn't even because I didn't want to, I just didn't even have an opportunity to. And it felt kind of unfair to me that that was stolen by people who had a microphone at the time, which is really sad to think about.
30:48Christy Noel:I had to look up who Matt Bomer is. He's not familiar to me. Because you don't watch like Ryan Murphy shows or American Horror Story. No, I love American Horror Story. Oh, you do? All of them, yeah. He's an American Horror Story, like, favorite. Like, Ryan Murphy cast him in, like, everything. You've definitely seen him. You've definitely seen him in, like, American Horror Story. Okay, some of these look a little bit like ringing a bell. But yeah, he's very handsome. Oh, he's so hot. Nothing makes you appreciate good bedding more than a hot August night. Having something that's lightweight, breathable, cool, and easy to sleep in, no matter how hot it gets, is so freaking important.
31:22That's why I love Quince. It's my go-to for bedding for so long now with high-quality materials like 100 % European linen and organic cotton. You can feel the difference, you guys. It feels like you're in a hotel bed, okay? As a lifelong renter who's probably going to be renting for the rest of my life at this point, it's hard for me to justify splurging on custom furniture or, like, chic, expensive vintage home finds when I know this isn't my forever home.
32:47That's what Wayfair is for. Because even though renting makes me less enthusiastic about spending money on furniture and home decor, I still want my apartment to feel chic and elevated, duh. 36:16Obviously, many members of the gay community have heavily criticized Perez for outing these celebrities. Kim Fichara of AfterEllen.com said, I have to question the character of a man who attacks others on such deeply personal levels without provocation. and for self-benefit, monetary or otherwise. If he's emotionally incapable of exhibiting even the tiniest bit of compassion for closeted people, if he can't be sensitive to the fact that coming out is a very personal decision and that the process can be difficult for some, especially celebrities, I feel sorry for him. GLAAD spokesperson Damon Romine told Salon.com that media speculation about a celebrity's orientation is not something we support.
36:56This kind of gossip can lead some people to the decision to come out, as we have seen recently, or it may drive others further into the closet. People are going to become more guarded and secretive and not less because they do not want to create any opportunities for anyone to out them, which makes sense. It's like if you are, if someone is trying to out you, it might just drive you further into the closet, which is just not great. In 2007, do you remember when Perez outed or not didn't out, released? Physically outed. physically released into the stratosphere. Vanessa Hudgens nude photos that you shared a censored version, but link to the uncensored ones.
37:43And she was a teenager at the time. No,
37:45Christy Noel:I can't believe that wasn't flagged as child, child pornography. She was, she may have been of age. Let me check exactly how old she was. She was, she was 18 or 19. So she was, she was legal. She was of age, but she was still a teenager, right? He later apologized. It does not make it any better, but it legally wasn't. Yeah, he did this to many female celebrities. He was obsessed with a nude photo scandal. Britney Spears. Oh my God. During her lowest point. And if you guys don't know this about me, I am a Britney stan. I always have been. How could we not? I mean, how could we not stan the greatest female artist of all time?
38:25The greatest artist of all time, honestly.
38:27Christy Noel:Greatest performer of all time. greatest performer. I don't know why to qualify that with female. Like she is the greatest artist of all time. Hands down. Can never forgive him for this. He was so mean when she had her breakdown in 2007. He would call her a train wreck, an unfit mother. He actually, his nickname for her was unfit me. Good one. And this is fucking awful. I do not remember this happening. I maybe, maybe I blocked it out of my mind. After Heath Ledger's tragic death in 2008, Perez sold. Why couldn't it be Britney t-shirts what what come again that's deeply disturbing yep wishing death he never saves this kind of heat or hatred for men it's always always women celebrities he hates women he is such a fucking misogynist and again she was at her lowest point in 2007 at her lowest Yeah, that's violent.
39:24Christy Noel:Yeah. Oh, yeah. Wishing death on someone on a fucking icon, no less. And he got so much backlash for this, obviously, later pulled them at the 2009 Much Music Awards. I don't know if you remember his spat with Will. I am. No, but when I read your notes, I was like, holy shit. Yeah. So Perez claimed that he was struck in the eye at the after party for the much music video awards, which he either co-hosted or presented at one of those. He was a figure at that event. Why can I talk? Anyway, at the after party, he said he was struck in the eye by the Black Eyed Peas operation manager, Polo Molina.
40:06Will.i.am released a statement saying he had approached Perez regarding derogatory comments that he had made about Fergie. Of course, Perez had made comments about Fergie because he hates women.
40:17Christy Noel:Right. And good for Will. I am standing up for Fergie. Go Will. I am. We have no choice but to stand Will. I am. We have no choice but to stand Will. I am. Perez called Will. I am the F slur, a homophobic slur to a straight man. Not that it matters, but he later admitted in an interview that he originally considered using the N word to will.i.am to provoke a reaction out of him. And apparently this is why Polo Molina attacked him. Justified, in my opinion. Oh, 100%. If you say something, you have every right to use physical force, in my opinion. 100 % justified. Like what? Molina was detained because of the incident and Perez later filed a lawsuit against him seeking an unspecified amount over$25 ,000 to cover medical costs and compensation for the humiliation, mental anguish, and emotional and physical distress that he quote unquote suffered as a result of the attack.
41:13Christy Noel:What about the emotional and physical distress that you're causing? Well, I am for calling him the F slur and potentially the N word. Yeah, idiot. I know he's horrible. And again, he used a homophobic slur and glad called upon Perez to apologize for that because why are you as this supposedly gay activist an advocate for gay people throwing around the F slur. Yeah. Like that doesn't even, what an idiot. I know he's just horrible. Oh my God. Okay. So you know how we, I think on the Mary Kate and Ashley episode, we talked about celebrity deaths where we remember exactly where we were like Heath Ledger.
41:51Um, I talked about how I remember where I was when princess Diana died in 1997, even though I was five, Michael Jackson is one that I remember the day exactly where I was. it was 2009. Do you remember where you were? Was that a formative celebrity death for you?
42:07Christy Noel:Obviously, I remember all the chaos that ensued or just like the world sadness or like it was weird because he was accused of so many horrific crimes. But I remember the aftermath. I don't remember the moment, though. Yeah. So I remember exactly where I was. You could tell me any celebrity death since 1997, I think. And I could tell you exactly where I was when I learned about it. I have a photographic memory when it comes to that, to nothing else. I have a horrible memory when it comes to anything else. My brain only has capacity for pop culture. But anyway, when Michael Jackson, it was reported that he had a cardiac, he went into cardiac arrest and died.
42:46Right. Perez competently claimed that this was a hoax, that this was a publicity stunt. obviously he was he was wrong extremely wrong and he got so much backlash for that everyone was like how dare you claim that this was like a hoax publicity stunt when this person died like they're fake he's faking his death and I get that you know Michael Jackson is was always this very theatric crazy figure but like come on use your brain you know what this is kind of giving if we
43:17Christy Noel:about it in a 2020 lens is when Dumois swore that the Ocean Gate submersible was going to be found everyone was like what yes yes oh my god wait what did she just say I have it on very good authority yeah she said that she had it on very good authority that the Ocean Gate submarine had been or submersible had been found yeah that everyone was safe we should never let her live that down by the way no like people forgot about that real quick forgot about that way too quickly yeah like literally to was such an idiot um she's a hack no like that's totally what it reminds me of it's like never forget hashtag never forget and then in 2010 he okay so just for some background In case any of us forgot, Perez had this fixation on young female stars.
44:15We were talking about Vanessa Hudgens, him leaking her nude photos when she was just, you know, 18 or 19. He was obsessed with publicly shaming some of those young Disney Channel stars like Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez for their looks, their choices, their sexualities. And they were minors.
44:33Christy Noel:Yeah. In 2010, he tweeted a photo up the skirt of Miley Cyrus, who was then only 17. She wasn't wearing underwear. Allegedly. I have not seen the photos, but everyone who saw them said she was not wearing underwear. She's a minor. Like this is child pornography. Right. People were like, he should be charged. The photo was ultimately removed and he claimed he swore up and down. She actually was wearing underwear, whatever. It's not a big deal. either way is either way who's going in and photoshopping zooming in on somebody's crotch area and photoshopping that you sick freak i'm not saying it was perez but like whoever did that and then he posted that touch grass like get a life you're disgusting a sick fuck and again like he had this fixation on teenage girls when we think about how hard some of these child stars some of these disney stars like when we talked about this also on like the mary kate nashley episode, how hard it must be to grow up in the spotlight.
45:27Perez Hilton was one of the main voices that was tormenting these girls.
45:32Christy Noel:Right. I don't think he ever bothered Zac Efron. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong. It was always the women. Oh, wait, Jordan, our producers goes, he did. Okay, sure. But it was mostly the women. In 2010, Perez became involved in the It Gets Better project urging celebrities to support gay teenagers who are being driven to suicide because of homophobic bullying. It was like this big anti-bullying. The call is coming from inside the house. Sorry to interrupt. Call coming in front. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. It's like, oh, that's rich. That's rich, Perez. And this prompted Khloe Kardashian, good for her, to describe Perez as her personal bully.
46:12Again, we mentioned how he had such a vendetta against certain women, and Khloe Kardashian was one of them. He was one of those people calling her fat and ugly in the 2000s. Even though she wasn't, you look at her now and it's like, I think compared to Kim and Kourtney who were so petite and like just stunningly beautiful, she unfortunately got compared to them, but like she was in no way fat. Same with like Lena Dunham in 2012 when Girls premiered. It is crazy how some of these women, like I said, Jessica Simpson in that infamous jeans photo, like these women were not fat. It's so crazy. But Perez was such a fucking fat phobic misogynist bully.
46:49Chloe said that it was so hypocritical of him to be part of this campaign. And this prompted Perez to release a YouTube video titled, I'm going to be doing things differently. Oh my God.
47:00Christy Noel:I totally remember this when everyone started to come onto the fact that, oh, he's actually really mean. And I remember his whole campaign. I'm going to be nicer now. I'm not going to write dicks on people's faces. I'm not going to put jizz or cocaine powder on their nose. I'm going to try and be better. I literally remember this like it was yesterday. It was like this whole Perez Hilton rebrand. And it's like too little too late, bitch. Like, come on. He addressed his actions over the years in this video and apologized for bullying celebrities. He vowed to change the malicious tone of his website, even if it meant losing readers and revenue.
47:34He also announced the launch of three new websites, like trying to make it more about like lifestyle instead of bullying celebrities. Coco Perez, which is on fashion. Totally remember. Yes, same. I remember Teddy. Teddy Hilton, his animal rights one. Fit Perez, which was all about fitness. He also said that his own son, Mario, would likely be bullied as well. He said, this is why I call him Perez Jr. I want him to have an alter ego as well. So when people do or say things that are hurtful about his dad or hurtful about him, hopefully will not hurt as much because they don't really know him. Those people know you as Perez Jr., but you are not Perez Jr., so it doesn't matter what they say.
48:13And I think, again, this is why like the nickname, the alter ego Perez Hilton was kind of like a buffer for him. I think that he felt like when people were mean about Perez Hilton, which is ironic because he was so mean about everyone, but he felt like people being mean about Perez Hilton, they didn't really actually know him. And this is so Serena Kerrigan coded, by the way. she literally just made a video about her sfk alter ego helping her cope with rejection because it was all just a persona give me oh my god so fucking stupid it's like literally giving split personalities queen of confidence everyone queen of confidence yeah so okay the next controversy
48:58Christy Noel:oh my god sophie you remember this yes i remember the entire internet was divided it was like lady Gaga V Perez Hilton. I'm so excited that you're talking about this. So at one point, Lady Gaga and Perez were actually friends. If you remember those photos from some house party, it must have been like 2008 or something. And it's Perez, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry's there, Amanda Bynes, I think Michelle Trachtenberg, Emmy Rossum. It was like a who's who of young Hollywood, honestly. And again, he was mingling with all these celebrities. So they were friends at one point. and it's speculated that they had a falling out.
49:37No one really knows for sure like what happened, but it's speculated that their falling out happened because he gained her trust through friendship and then he got her drunk and started like asking her very personal questions that she'd specifically said she didn't want to talk about and he kept pushing it and he was clearly trying to like dig for information and tea from her and take advantage of her friendship. This one goes out to all my ladies. All my multitasking mamas who need energy to show up at work and at home. All my empty nest explorers who need a little gut health support for the journey ahead.

52:04So in 2013, a Twitter user told Gaga that Perez was in her New York City building in the lobby. She asked this person. This was all via Twitter. She said, you know, collect more evidence. He's stalking me. She ended up tweeting at him and said, stay at Perez Hilton. Stay away from me and my family. You are sick trying to rent an apartment in my building to stalk me. Leave me alone.
52:28Christy Noel:Do you know what this is kind of reminding me of, Sophie? Demi Lovato. Stay away from her. Get a job. Yeah. And he denied stalking her, just claimed to be apartment hunting and said he didn't know where Lady Gaga lived, but was like, I'm just apartment hunting. And she was like, stop stalking me and stop. Like, don't try to live in my building. Like, get away from me. And also in 2013, Lady Gaga came out publicly against him. She said that she was so freaked out by the stalking and harassing behavior. Obviously, she also said, and this is like so fucked up. She had canceled her Born This Way tour because of a hip injury.
53:02He sent her a photo of a wheelchair with the word karma written across it, another of Madonna pointing a gun. And he, she again tweeted about this. She said, I still have the text Perez sent me of me in a wheelchair with the words karma written across, plus Madonna pointing a gun at me on the day of my accident. What? She said -
53:22Christy Noel:That's literal harassment. Insane. He was clearly, clearly harassing, stalking her. Oh, my God. I forgot about this. I don't remember this. Oh, my God. This is so scary. Yeah. And she said, please, monsters, do not be affected by someone like this. Nothing merits this kind of hatred. I'm OK. And I always survive. Ignore him and just dance. Queen. Queen. Oh, my God. That's so unsettling to get a care package with like this creepy Photoshop picture of you with a gun. Yeah. This is like literally fucking psycho. fucking psycho and you know what really quickly to the picture that you were just speaking of with emmy michelle katie amanda it's almost one of those things where these young celebrities it's keep your friends close and your enemies closer they were probably so scared of his wrath that they were like as long as we keep him in our circle he won't put dicks all over our face like it was probably so calculated you think they want to hang out with this loser they're probably just trying to get him on his good side they're trying to get on his good side you're so right though That's absolutely probably why these young Hollywood stars were hanging out with him.
54:25It's like, keep your enemies close. In 2014, Perez criticized Ariana Grande's hairstyles. Just shut the fuck up, Perez. Enough. He was just like so fucking mean for no reason. Her fans began to harass him and even threatened his son, which is obviously fucked up. Perez then tweeted at Ariana, her brother Frankie and her employer at the time, Nickelodeon, with accusations that she'd been doing cocaine at a party. Ariana denied the accusations. I think also that that is why, like with the Lady Gaga thing, I think that he was when he was mingling with celebrities, he was always trying to collect dirt on them that he would he would be able to use against them at some point.
55:08Like, I'm sure he was at a party with Ariana Grande and she was doing coke it was you know young hollywood but he leveraged that information to use against her
55:16Christy Noel:when he needed it those accusations about ariana to be clear have been rampant on crazy days and nights for like yeah so yeah she's like i mean if those allegations i mean i believe it is what i'm saying i mean it's hollywood you know showbiz baby perez told ariana that she needed to wrangle her fans and disavow their comments, which he eventually did. So that's the rundown in terms of like his major, major controversies in terms of today. He's really cooled off quite a bit when it comes to both his popularity and how fucking mean he is to celebrities. Um, he still, you know, has his podcast. His new persona is all about being kinder because he knows that's the vibe now.
56:04It's not the early 2000s anymore. He just kind of like goes and flows with what's cool at the time. In the early 2000s, the tabloids were really mean to celebrities. So, so was he, but now that's not as much the vibe and he's just like not really relevant anymore. Again, he has the podcast. He has his YouTube channel and he's been staying on top of the Blake Lively versus Justin Baldoni saga saga saga. Blake's legal team has actually issued subpoenas against him and other high profile commentators as part of like this ongoing lawsuit. So TBD, what happens with that? He has also been someone that's very, very, very outspoken about Ozempic and GLP one weight loss drugs as someone who for his part lost weight, I guess, naturally through fitness and eating healthy and exercise, whatever.
56:52But yeah, I don't keep up with him anymore. Do you at all keep up with any of his content? Yeah.
57:00Christy Noel:He's one of those people that have just kind of poof, like went away and no one has noticed his loss because the way that we consume celebrity pop culture is vastly different than it was in the early 2010s. And so I feel as if he wasn't modifying his platform to kind of be part of the new way that we consume media. Like he wasn't on Instagram. I know he has all these things now, but when we were changing as a society and how we consume, he wasn't. His website was a static blog. So to me, he's kind of just went into oblivion and I'm fine with that because he doesn't really deserve any of the fame or the, if I'm putting fame in quotation marks or money that he was garnering from his website through advertisers, it's like you don't deserve any of that on the literal broken backs of people's trauma.
57:45No, exactly. And then you see all of these things that he said and he did, and it's just none of it aged well at all. It's all just horrible when you see the stuff that he was writing about celebrities and the things he was saying about Misha Barton, just the things that he was saying were so fucked up. Outing Neil Patrick Harris and Lance Bass, the things he was saying about Amy Winehouse, May She Rest in Peace and Britney. It's like literally none of it aged well. So what do you have to offer this world today?
58:17Christy Noel:Right. Not a whole lot. You know, it's a very crowded landscape, celebrity, pop culture, commentators, now with podcasts everywhere, including ours. Why keep including someone so toxic in the mix? And it sucks too, because I feel like I was complicit in all of this just through reading and giving his blog hits, right? We were refreshing it on an hour by hour basis. and it sucks that, you know, did we know better? We probably did, but we were just there to consume the pop culture. But like at the same time, we were pushing that narrative, which sucks. Yeah. I mean, in our defense, we were like 12.
58:52Christy Noel:Yeah. And we didn't know. That's also like we were reading the tabloids that were also so mean, but almost like a sanitized version of the stuff that he was saying. The stuff that he was saying was so, and that's what made his blog so popular is that he was so unfiltered. So just like off the cuff stream of consciousness, just so raw and mean in a way that even provocative, that's just, that was his style. And that's what made him so popular at the time. Yeah. Yeah. I think we know the difference now. I don't think that if this webs or this type of Instagram account existed today, no one would really be giving it hits.
59:25Christy Noel:I think we know a lot better now and we're just learning and growing, but yeah, exactly. And then wait, did you see that just like last year, like two years ago, he tweeted about Lucas Gage, who I know is from San Diego, right? and he tweeted somebody needs to tell this dude i guess it was about lucas gage and chris appleton like their relationship and he tweeted somebody needs to tell this dude he's not as famous as he thinks he is all the hashtag lucas gage details here and then lucas gage responded it his tweet got 29 likes and then lucas gage responded and said somebody needs to tell this dude that nobody has read his blog since 2009 details here and then lucas gage's tweet got 3 500 likes oh my god that's so funny yeah lucas gage is like he's just like harmless like i don't know yeah chills yeah exactly it's like he's just like so bitter and jealous i think also some of it comes from the fact that he wanted to make it in hollywood and as an actor it never did and he's triggered because lucas gage is this like hunky uh gay guy gay guy who has garnered a shit ton of attention through yeah exactly celebrities kardashians that's probably what so much of it comes down to is that he couldn't make it as a celebrity as an actor so everyone that makes it in hollywood he is so fucking bitter and jealous of that jealous jealousy is the worst thing you can wear like and it's so evident sometimes and it makes me cringe for people i'm like yeah you're just really jealous aren't you miserable miserable i guess that's about it for perez hilton i know that there are so many horrible things he's said and done.

From the publisher
For millennial pop culture lovers, he was one of the earliest introductions to celebrity gossip, an endlessly scrollable pink gateway to becoming obsessed with (and hating on) famous people. And that’s not something we’re proud of, especially through the lens of 2025…
