In short
The “Snark Bait” episode covers Shane Dawson’s rise as an early YouTube “shock humor” pioneer and the scandals that drove his fall from mainstream popularity, including racism/blackface, sexual violence jokes, transphobia, and later misinformation/conspiracy content.
Guest backgrounds
The hosts are Sophie and Christy, discussing from their perspective as long-time YouTube watchers/critics. They reference prior coverage of other creators (e.g., MrBeast, Tana, Jake Paul, etc.) but the transcript does not name additional guests.
Key claims
Shane Dawson used offensive stereotypes and slurs (including repeated hard-R N-word use and blackface), made rape/date-violence jokes (e.g., “How to Get Pregnant” with drugging and Craigslist “fuck me till I bleed”), and mocked critics with violent rhetoric. Later, his 2019–2020 conspiracy series allegedly normalized dangerous misinformation (Apollo 11 moon/flag claims, Flat Earth sheep-herder analogy, 9/11 crisis-actor narratives, and wildfire “laser” claims). His viewership reportedly dropped about 90% over time.
Notable examples
“Shanene” character/merch; Jenny Craig sketch leading to job loss; “Not Cool” film panned by critics; The Chair (Zachary Quinto producer); “Conspiracy Collection” (Flat Earth/9-11/wildfires); “The Haunting of Shane Dawson” ghost show; “Conspiracy Collection” makeup collab with Jeffree Star.

0:49Or just like a good guy. From the director of EZA and anyone but you. This whole thing is nuts. There's nothing traditional about this night. On August 7th, the clock starts on the summer's biggest rom-com. I'm Owen. Allie. What about me and me? Monica Barbaro. Callum Turner. I've been told I'm a 7th. By who? Your mom? No. She thinks I'm a 10th. One Night Only. Rated R. Only in theaters August 7th. Hey, everybody. Welcome back to Snark Bait. I'm Sophie. I'm Christy. And hello. How are you doing today, Christy? It's another episode of What's a Snark? YouTuber edition. And I just have to say, you know, sometimes when we cover these male YouTubers, some people are like, oh, we don't want to hear about it.
1:33They're some of our most juicy episodes, like genuinely, because they're so, these men are so problematic. I just have to say that up top. Yes. Thank you for saying that because I feel like, and I've said this before, when we did our Mr. Beast episode forever ago, so many people were like, we don't care about Mr. Beast. And it's like, okay, well, I do. And you should. Not about him, but his problems, because they're so great. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Like that's still one of my favorite episodes. And not that I've ever been like a YouTube, like you guys know, I feel like Christy and I, we've talked about, we kind of like missed that YouTube craze in the 2000s, 2010s.
2:09I feel like maybe we were like a little too, even though we were young at the time, I feel like, I don't know, I always felt like I was like too old for YouTube. I don't know why. Me too. So what were your like feelings? What are your feelings up top about Shane Dawson if you have any. Honestly, I just know that he's friends with everybody. Like when we did our Tana Mojo episode, I remember he was kind of comforting her when the TanaCon thing blew up and like it ended up kind of being a Fyre Festival before or maybe I forgot if it was before or after Fyre Festival. Yeah. He seems to be friends with all of these huge YouTubers and I don't really know his work too much.
2:45And to be honest, why do I feel like him and Mr. Beast? I can't tell them apart physically. I don't know why. They're like such bland, indistinguishable white men. Right. They kind of look alike. I don't know. I can't describe it. Yeah. I am only familiar with Shane Dawson from his scandals. I never followed his work or his YouTube content. But like you said, the YouTube community, he is friends with, you know, Jeffree Star, and he was involved in the James Charles dramageddon. He is very interconnected. I feel like the whole YouTube, all those YouTube OGs, Tana included, it's very incestuous.
3:27It's really interesting. But he was definitely a pioneer on the YouTube front. But like I said, I really only became familiar with him because of his many, many, many scandals. So just a trigger warning up top that there is just about every offensive thing in the book that this man has done, including, you know, racism, blackface, rape jokes, just very problematic transphobic jokes, every single problematic thing you can think of. So this might not be for you if you want to tap out now. Yeah, he is not a good guy. Not a good guy. And I'm curious what your guys' relationship, if any, was with Shane Dawson, if you watched him on YouTube growing up, because he got his start pretty early on.
4:16And like I said, he was kind of like a pioneer and he was huge at one point. And I will say something that is very satisfying about Shane Dawson's career trajectory is that he really, his views have gone down so much. It's insane. He's lost like 90 % of his viewership over the years. So the scandals that he has had have really, really, really had a tangible effect on his career. And I know we always joke that like, you know, cancer culture isn't real and that so many, especially, you know, white men can go about their lives and do whatever they want. And then they don't face any consequences, really.
4:51He actually has had such a dramatic, you know, fall from grace, in my opinion. So let's get into it, shall we? Let's do it. So Shane Dawson was actually born Shane Lee Yaw, July 19th, 1988. So he is 37. Oh, my God, his birthday. We're recording on Thursday, July 16th. Happy early birthday. So he's about to turn 38. He has two older brothers named Jacob and Jared. And he was raised by a single mother, Teresa, in a low-income household. And he first became interested in making videos when he would work on video projects in school with his friends. And it's interesting. I didn't realize that Shane Dawson wasn't his real name.
5:33But when he was first starting out, everyone was like, you have to change your name. Oh, really? But meanwhile, it was his selection. Yeah, so he chose Dawson because he was a fan of Dawson's Creek. Did you watch that show? I feel like maybe we were actually too young for that show. I think we were too young for that show. Yes. But I feel like there's so much nostalgia around it, and I love the theme song. I don't want to wait for our lives to be over. So something about it I feel like is calling my name. I've thought about it that I feel like I need to, like, start it. And I'm such a fan of, like, Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, that, like, hello.
6:07They have. Obviously, James Van Der Beek. A-list. I know. Recipes. They have A-list celebrities that still stand the test of time. Their careers are still booming. Like all the people on that show. So I think maybe this is my sign to finally start it. He described himself as having a rough childhood. He was bullied a lot for his weight as a kid. He later ended up losing 150 pounds as an adult. Yeah, he said he lacked a lot of confidence due to being overweight. And he actually lost that weight via Jenny Craig. But his relationship soured with Jenny Craig after he used Jenny Craig as the setup for one of his YouTube sketches and kind of poked fun at it.
6:51Do you know what I think about when I think of Jenny Craig? Brittany Cartwright? Yes. Yes. Forever now. I was like, I didn't even know that Jenny Craig still existed until I realized, oh, wait, isn't Brittany Cartwright the brand ambassador? And then I was reminded. She was. I don't think she's like diet. Diet. Oh, yeah. That was like so early 2000s. I feel like Jenny Craig Weight Watchers, all of that. I know Weight Watchers like rebranded. It's still like Weight Watchers rebrand. A lot of people in my life did Weight Watchers and it was successful. um now it just goes by ww and it with a new tagline wellness that works so now it's more about wellness and less about like losing weight right but it's like the same thing yeah yeah exactly um so yeah he described having suicidal ideation growing up um and he in 2013 addressed this in a video and he made this video after news of paris jackson's attempt on her own life broke He said, as most of you know, I had a very rough childhood.
7:53It was horrible. As many times as I thought to myself, maybe I should end it, I didn't because I knew that, you know what, it sucks right now, but I'm going to make it fucking better. So he talks about, you know, fighting through depression and just a really rough childhood. So let's get into his career. In 2008 was when he officially started his channel, Shane Dawson TV. And that was early on for YouTube. Like 2008 is very, very, very early. Like he was, you know, right. It's so crazy to think about how like one choice to start uploading videos on YouTube obviously changed the trajectory of so many people's lives.
8:30No, entirely. And I remember in high school, we used to have to do, I was like in an AP English class and we had to do a video like kind of satirizing books we read. So my team was assigned King Lear, Shakespeare's King Lear. And I remember how difficult it was to do a video. Like this was before the iPhone. We had, I don't even know what we did to actually record the video. But back then it was such a layer of complexity that like young kids decided to learn at such a young age and then upload. Like this was such early days. And I'm always very shocked at how innovative these young kids were.
9:05Shane Dawson, David Dobricks, all these guys. Because it's like Tana Mojo. Because it wasn't easy just to pick up your iPhone and click record. Like you had to go through so much incremental effort. And I don't know. They suck. Like this guy sucks. But I'm always just very impressed by these young kids that were able to do this in 2008. Totally. I completely agree. I am forever in awe of people that are good at editing videos. I find it very, very difficult. I took a, I was a journalism major in college. So I took one of my classes that I took was video journalism. And I had to, you know, make a news segment with a video.
9:39I had to rent video equipment. It was so heavy. Yeah. So annoying. Editing was really hard. I had to get like B-roll. It's like very difficult. And it's something that I notice now when I watch shows. I'm like, oh, B-roll. Oh, my gosh. They do it all the time on Love Island. All the B-roll. It's probably like seagulls. No, literally. And I feel like with me and Sophie, the way that this video is so overstimulating, even for us to click record and like load in the SD card. Oh, my God. We always have drama with our video. And like, thank you, CarTech, for managing it, our video editor. Every time it's like, hey, we have this.
10:12You got to fix this. Like, it's so much effort. We don't even do anything. So respect on these people's names just for that respect for trying and learning. So he started, basically started his career with comedy sketches, character impressions. Let's start with the Jenny Craig incident. So he found the fact that Valerie Bertinelli was the brand's spokesperson at the time. And he found that funny considering her kind of colorful past she had written about in her memoir. And he imagined a scenario in which he was trying to sell the Jenny Craig diet to a bunch of elderly clients using passages from the actress's tell-all book.
10:45And he said she talked about sex and drugs a ton in the book. So then I was like, I want to do a video of me forcing my 80-year-old clients to read filthy passages from this book. So I did that. I don't think she liked it. I don't think Jenny Craig liked it. So he uploaded a video of himself pole dancing in the building he worked at and showing before and after photos of clients saying that all these people gained their weight back. So really making fun of Jenny Craig. And he, you know, kind of soured his relationship with them after they helped him lose weight. And he said that actually at the time, himself and his mom and his brother were all in some capacity working for Jenny Craig.
11:22And they were all let go because of this sketch. Oh, my gosh. And he said it was really dark that, you know, he really messed up his family's livelihood at the time. Well, also, he didn't come from money. Like you said, he comes from a low income, single mother or household. So that job probably meant a lot to his mom at the time. Exactly. And as we will get into throughout this episode, pushing the boundaries and like being edgy with his comedy is like his whole shtick early on in his career. Like he knows that he is being offensive and he thinks it's worth it. Like to him, probably at this time, he was like, you know what?
11:57This is so going to pay itself off in dividends. Even though everyone is like mad at me right now and everyone has lost their job because of me, it's all going to be worth it in the end because I'm edgy and I'm pushing the envelope. Amen. Shane Dawson. Good for you. I mean, not really, but. Yeah, not really, because like he ends up like this becomes his whole MO and it's so crazy how poorly so much of his quote unquote comedy has aged throughout the year. So let's get into some of it. So again, you know, these character impressions, comedy sketches. He had one famously called Shanene. Oh, no. And this was a quote unquote ghetto girl.
12:42Obviously an offensive stereotype. And Shanene, let's go down to, where did I put? Okay. Okay, sorry, sorry. I lost my place. So in one video entitled How to Get Pregnant, his character Shanene drugs her co-star with too much MDMA, places an ad on Craigslist with the subject line, fuck me till I bleed, and offers her up to a man that asks, can I kill her? So obviously themes of not only offensive racial stereotypes, not only is he wearing blackface, but themes of sexual abuse, date rape, under the guise of boundary pushing. Like this isn't just like dark, edgy humor. Like this is obviously extremely offensive.
13:24And what's interesting also is that he still has, like, Shanene becomes one of his most famous characters throughout his career. And he still has, like, Shanene merch that you can find online. Oh, no. And even the name Shanene is just so, it's just offensive. It's such an offensive stereotype. Right. Yeah. And I'm thinking of all those YouTubers back in, like, when he got started. This was 2008. But I think of Jenna Marbles, too. Back then. And I'm not saying this behavior was at all okay. Like never in my life in 2008 where I think this was an appropriate skit to put on. But the environment that we were okay with and the things that we just overlooked at that time.
14:05Jenna Marbles did blackface, for God's sake. And remember when she like exited the interview in 2020 because those videos resurfaced? The things that we were getting away with as kids was so wildly offensive. But no one really said anything. Like there wasn't a cancel culture back then like there is today. But like, regardless, this is wrong, period. Cancel culture or not. But it's wild, just the environment that we were just laughing with and thinking was appropriate. It was definitely like, you would be remiss to not acknowledge that it was a different time. Even though obviously, like, we look back and we're like, that was so incredibly offensive.
14:41We knew better than to, you know, use the N-word. He would use the N-word. Oh my gosh. With a hard R, um, repeatedly in skits. He would be blackface. There is obviously no excuse for that, but like you would be remiss to not acknowledge that it just was a different environment that we were in in the early 2000s. Yeah. Or not even the early 2000s, early 2010s. Yeah, even 2010s. Late 2000s. It was like 2008 to 2012, around that time. Yeah. So he would do, he had a bunch of different characters, Barb the lesbian, a football jock slash bully who was a closeted homosexual, the jock's insecure girlfriend who thinks she's overweight, a fashionably bulimic high school girl whose finger is her best friend, Aunt Hilda portrayed with a thick New York Jewish accent, trans characters, Farouk Lupe, Guadalupe, a Mexican with a stereotyped Chola accent.
15:33and obviously just so many stereotypes that were incredibly offensive then and now through the lens of 2026. But at the time, again, there were so many people that were like, this is funny. Ha ha ha. And he ended up getting 500 plus million views within two years, which is crazy. And in 2010, during all of these offensive skits, he was named Forbes 25th most famous web celebrity. I will say this. I mean, he didn't discriminate when he had to offend every single box, like every single race, ethnicity, religion. He was not discriminatory at all. In fact, he hit every point, you know? Yes, exactly.
16:11He also was inspired by, like you said, he didn't discriminate. Even his mom, he was inspired by. In one video, he's wearing a bright red wig, red lipstick, to portray his mother, an alcoholic, Southern, lazy, and semi-abusive character. When she forces Dawson to attend school, she sends him out the door by saying, later, F slur. And these instances of gay slurs drew some criticism at the time and his actual mother who later appears in several videos like doesn't have any you know bears no resemblance to this character it's so random um he also drew criticism for portraying a pre-op transgender female character who appeared in a skit about speed dating and the bulk of the character's appearances consist of such lines as i'm sick of this penis chop it off and that's how they're going to turn my penis into a clitoris Yeah, it's.
17:00And then at that point, Shane, who's portraying himself in the skit, is seen turning to the side and vomiting profusely. So the concept of a pre-op transgender woman is vomit inducing to him. And he's so disgusted as eliciting a physical reaction. Yeah. So obviously most of his skits were centered around stereotypes, disabilities, just like really, really, really offensive shit. And but again, like this type of quote unquote comedy was kind of the standard for online humor at the time. Like you said, Jenna Marbles, like this was what people were doing. And it just it was a crazy time. Like this was also around the time of like Jersey Shore, which if you watch back Jersey Shore now through the lens of 2026, calling women grenades.
17:46Landmines. Landmines. Like it was just incredibly, incredibly. The domestic violence that we are exhibiting between Sam and Ron. Yes, exactly. I mean, that entire show, the way that we, I want to speak for everyone, the way that me as like teenager or whatever, early 20s watching the show, thinking it was funny that men were calling women landmines and grenades, not even batting an eye that Sam, excuse me, Ron was domestically violent towards Sam and the roommate said nothing about it. And then now watching it now being like, oh my God, how do we let this skate by? How do we uplift this man, Ron, for as long as we did?
18:21Thank God now he's, that could be a whole other episode. Jersey Shore. It's so crazy. Yes, absolutely. But like the way that we were laughing and made them the most famous celebrities in the entire world. Like it's crazy. The reason that the Hills ended up tanking was because they had nothing against Jersey Shore. I mean, the show was incredible. Wow. I didn't even think of that. The fact that Jersey Shore kind of ran the Hills out of business. It did because the Hills was so boring in comparison. Jersey Shore was one of the most incredible reality television shows, is it problematic? 100%. Was it compelling television to watch?
18:56100%. But again, this is around the same time. I just think, yeah, I think it's worth mentioning in the context of, you know, that time, 2008 to 2012. This was the environment that we were in. Like, it was just a totally different... So bad. It was like pre-woke. And I know that's kind of an annoying word to use, but like it was. I feel like there's no other way to really describe it. So in 2014, he actually got to compete in a show called The Chair, in which two novice directors are given the same script and must each make their own film around it. People who watched both films then voted online for who their favorite was.
19:37And his ended up being called Not Cool. Zachary Quinto, remember when we saw him in LA? At the audition, yeah. And I was like, Yes. Zachary Quinto. Oh, my God. Zachary Quinto. So Zachary Quinto was one of the producers of The Chair. And Shane's final project, Not Cool, ended up getting absolutely panned by critics, Zachary Quinto included, called it deeply offensive and tasteless. He said that Shane Dawson should not be making films at all. He completely removed his name from the kind of disowned it. Yeah. And he also criticized Shane as a person, said he was inflexible and difficult to work with.
20:12Even though Shane ended up winning, he won the$250 ,000 prize. But it's so funny, the reviews. 14 % on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating overwhelming dislike. A critic from The Hollywood Reporter wrote, filled with ethnic stereotypes, scatological humor, scatologicals and, you know, poop jokes, profane language and characters who are not so much caricatures as cartoons, not cool well lives up to its title. The characters are vile, the acting is terrible, including Shane Dawson. there's not an original thought or joke in the thing. It's an insult. The LA Times called the film an abyss, an insult to the craft of filmmaking, storytelling, and entertainment in almost every way.
20:52So again, it's like, there's something to be said about the fact that his only, what's the word? Legitimate piece of work. No, his only like tool in his toolkit was shock humor. You know, like he always wanted to offend people. Like that was the only thing that he had going for him, I guess. And he didn't even have that going for him. Because clearly, like, you know, real people with taste are like, yeah, this isn't funny. This isn't interesting. This isn't good. But, you know, everyone can find their audience if they work hard enough. And he clearly found his audience of people that found his humor funny.
21:29Yeah. And I'm thinking of as well as like comedians today. Like people always say don't go to a comedy show if you don't want to be offended. Because if you go to a comedy show, they make so many jokes across the like spanning race, ethnicities, religions, whatever. I think there's something to be said about comics that can actually relate to like the human experience. I saw Joe Coy two weeks ago, and so much of his sketch was built on the immigrant experience and like his mother coming in from the Philippines and not being able to speak English and how hard she worked to bring them to life and how his family scoffed at the idea of him being a comedian.
22:01And he ended up he's now like worth$50 million. Like he's one of the most wealthy comedians out there. But I think there's something about true comics where you can poke fun and you can be offensive, but at the same time, you can kind of connect on like a human level simultaneously versus Shane Dawson. It's like, no, no, you're 100 % shock value. Yeah. And like, where is that actually connection to like being a human? Like, that's where I feel like you can distinguish true comics, Robin Williams, Joe Coy, I don't know who else, but versus people like this that are just kind of like gross and tacky slapstick humor.
22:35I'm actually seeing Shane Gillis tomorrow. He's so, he's the go. Like, I feel like he's one of the guys. He's so funny. And he's definitely had his offensive moments. And I think, you know, he does toe the line. Like, there are, you know, offensive jokes always from, like, pretty much any comedian. Yes. But I think he also does a good job of, like you said, relating to the audience in a way. Mm-hmm. And also poking fun at himself, first and foremost. I've never seen him live. This is my first time seeing him live. But I've watched some of his specials. I'm so jealous that you're going. I got these tickets for Henry forever ago, and I honestly forgot we're going to Philly to see him.
23:15Wait, that's so exciting. Yeah, Sophie, he's literally known as one of the greats. I know. He's really, really, really funny. But yeah, again, you could argue Shane Gillis also offends people with his humor. Totally. But I think he also has other tools in his toolkit. It's not just that. Like Shane Dawson, it's just that. And he doesn't even do it well. Right. And I mean, I should say the past tense because he doesn't do this type of content anymore, really. But that was his whole thing at the time, obviously. Right. So in 2015, in 2016, he published two New York Times bestselling essay collections.
23:51I hate my selfie and it gets worse. In 2015, he also came out as bisexual in a video and he received tons of support online from fans. At this point, he's very much like favored in the public eye. Like people still really liked him. 2018 he starts to make his YouTube pivot and kind of go more into less sketch comedy and more long form YouTube documentaries. So he did The Truth About TanaCon, which our Tana episode, if you listen to, you know what happened at TanaCon. The series received tens of millions of views in one week and garnered tons and tons of media attention. So that was a really, really, really, you know, well-received one of his.
24:35He also did The Secret World of Jeffree Star. So he just, like, basically called up his YouTube friends and he was like, I'm going to make, like, a docuseries about you. That's actually kind of brilliant. Kind of, yeah. So he also did one about Jake Paul. And this one is interesting. So he includes a licensed therapist, Katie Morton. And they talk in this documentary about antisocial personality disorder. And they kind of diagnose Jake Paul with that. And it's kind of, this one was criticized because it's, you're kind of like sensationalizing something that's serious, antisocial personality disorder, and casually diagnosing someone as a sociopath.
25:10Which he is. I think Jake Paul is a sociopath. But it was just like, yeah, totally agree with. But it's like, how, you know, ethical is this? You know, like, it's obviously exploitative. And obviously Jake Paul is signing up to be part of this. But it just felt kind of like icky. and also it notably did not include much pushback on Jake Paul's. It's like, oh, you're going to diagnose him as a sociopath, but then you don't push back on kind of some of the sociopathic things that he did at all. Kind of like excusing his paper because it's like, oh, he's just a sociopath. So like, it's fine. Yeah.

25:44It's like how people used to think about Jax Taylor. Like Jax is just crazy. His brain is broken. His brain is sprained. I don't have a drinking problem. I have an anger problem. Oh, my God. It's like, Jax, please. Jax, please. Oh, there's so much to say about Jackson. We're recording on Thursday, July 16th, and we definitely will be talking more about him on DET. Also, I could not this morning. I was trying to, like, hype myself up because I was really tired. And in my head, I was like, let's fucking go. Let's go. Wait, who's that again? Danny Booko, four under four. Let's go. Four under four.
26:18Why not try for one more? Like, shut the fuck up. I hate him. I hate him. And dare I say, so I know this is a bit of conjecture, but Lala Kent is giving us what we all need. Specifically as it pertains to Danny Booko. Like, thank you so much for saying something because everyone is too chicken. I know. Honestly, I was the number one hater of Lala at the beginning of the season and not wanting her to be on the show. But thank God someone is standing up to him. Right. We needed this for three years. Thank you. needed this let's go okay so four to four so 2019 this is this is like when i feel like it turns from offensive to like actually dangerous in a way so shane starts his new conspiracy series about you guessed it conspiracy theories um where he would platform uh you know 9-11 conspiracy theorists flat earthers etc etc like i've said many times everything is a conspiracy theory when you're a dumbass like i just feel like it's so funny it's like the definition of having like this over because it's always conspiracy theorists that think they're the smartest that they've like unlocked some sort of like, you know, oh, they don't want to tell you this, but the earth is actually flat.
27:38I don't even get the flat. They think they're so smart. I don't either. They think they're so fucking smart, but they're actually the dumbest people on the planet. And it was interesting timing because this was 2019. So he was starting to kind of like normalize. It was like the timing of it. He was normalizing conspiracy theories right before the COVID misinformation boom of 2020. So I feel like he was just like normalizing this way of thinking where it's just like, oh, we don't trust the government. We don't trust anyone. And again, it's like there's nothing groundbreaking or smart about a conspiracy theorist.
28:11I'm sorry, there isn't. And, you know, he would have all these, you know, theories and all of these truthers, 9-11 truthers, whatever it is. And yeah, like spreading misinformation left and right. Here are some examples. So Apollo 11, he recycled classic thoroughly debunked arguments, such as questioning why the American flag appeared to wave in space or why stars were not visible in the background of Apollo 11 photos. Flat Earth, he famously compared humanity to brainwashed sheep being kept inside a gate by a sheep herder to explain why the government would hide the Earth's true shape. My question for Flat Earthers is why.
28:51Like, why would the government hide this? No, I... What do they get out of this? What do they get out of this? If I hear people going down conspiracy rabbit holes, I'm like, even if that were true, okay, let's just say in the world that were true, how does that impact your life? How does that affect any type? Yes, exactly. How does that actually impact your day-to-day? And like, we live, we die, the earth is flat. Like, what are you talking about? How does that actually impact? Like, why are you getting so bent out of shape about this? Right. And also just like, I just want to know, like, what?
29:17Like, there are so many conspiracy theories. It's like the government is hiding this from you. When it comes to, like, the flat earth, like, maybe some other conspiracy theories are going to be like, okay, like, I guess that's something. like the existence of aliens. Sure. I think aliens for sure exist. I don't think that's a conspiracy theory. No. I can understand why the government want to keep something like that under wraps. But the Earth being flat, what would the government get out of that? I'm literally going to just look it up myself because I'm genuinely just curious. Why? Yeah. Why does it matter?
29:43Oh my God. It's so funny. Remember when Ben and Ronnie used to, before Lacey was on the Valley, they would say that she was a flat earther and then she had to dispel the rumors. Yeah. She reached out to them and she was like, I'm actually not a flat earther. I know Earth is round. So funny that they kept saying that because she's from Orange County, like hilarious. That's so funny. So media analysts from The Verge at the time noted that Shane Dawson's massive validation of the flat Earth theory directly inspired other creators like Logan Paul, for instance, to film their own flat Earth documentary.
30:12So you're giving life to this thing that doesn't deserve to have life to it. You know, it's like, why? Why are you doing this? And then 9-11. He entertained deep state narratives, the idea that major historic tragedies were internally orchestrated or utilized crisis actors. And then he also presented the 9-11 trutherism with playful pop culture conspiracies like whether Avril Lavigne was cloned, desensitizing his viewers to the severity of like historical misinformation, almost like meme-ifying dangerous political conspiracies like this. This is also how people get radicalized, you know, like this deep distrust of the government.
30:50And I, there are so many conspiracy theories that I hate, obviously. And I've always said that, like, I also have, like, a very, very, very maybe more intense dislike of conspiracy theories than the average person, maybe, because I'm Jewish. And I feel like so many conspiracy theories, there are even 9-11 conspiracy theories that are like, the Jews did it. Right. And I feel like I just, if you are a conspiracy theorist, I automatically am like, I don't like you. Yeah. But the 9-11 ones in particular, as someone who has read so many books on 9-11, has watched so many documentaries, I have consumed every piece.
31:27Even we watched, I showed you the movie United 93. No, I mean, it's such a life-changing movie. It's incredibly powerful. I highly recommend watching it if you haven't seen it. And it's supposed to be incredibly accurate to what actually happened. There were so many real, I mean, they were all, all of the victims were real that day. So, like, to say that there are crisis actors involved or that it's a conspiracy there with government, it was caused by the government. It's like, I hate that. Like, that actually pisses me off so much. Like, nothing about 9-11 conspiracies are funny, cute, okay, in my opinion.
31:58Also, the California wildfires. He, a 2019 documentary series, he pushed the narrative that the fires were not natural environmental disasters, but were instead intentionally set by the U.S. military using high-powered lasers. So. Yeah, I don't know about that. I mean, California always has wildfires. I can't imagine every single one is set by a U.S. military high-operable laser. I mean, they're just part of natural. And also, I know I haven't watched these full documentaries, so I can't answer the question of what would the government get out of doing that? I think there's a lot like creating.
32:37I actually, I don't know. I think there's a lot of things of like they want to completely eradicate like homes to build up new, newer homes and then create more real estate. Like rather than if you wipe out all the Palisades and you create smaller like apartment buildings and then you create more revenue. Like that's it comes down to money, basically. I don't know too much. I could see that being a plot in a movie about like a super villain, I guess. Yeah. Like, that is so evil to think about. No, I know. I know. And, like, I know that the government is evil in a lot of ways. That is just so crazy to think about.
33:10I don't know. What do you guys think about some of these conspiracy theories? Are you on board? Actually, don't tell me if you're a 9-11 pruther, because I actually will get so upset. Yeah, the 9-11 conspiracy theories are bonkers. Like, they're— It's insane. Like, there is so much— It's crazy to have so much— That's the thing also about conspiracy theorists. You have so much documentation, so much evidence, and they will hand wave it all away because it doesn't fit their narrative. You know, like there has never been more evidence of anything in ever. More than 9-11 probably. And I think with 9-11, it's like maybe the American government had an inkling that this was going to happen because of the level of security that they have and we have intelligence and everything.
33:48Yeah, that I believe is true. But like in terms of it's an inside job or it was the Jews or whatever, like. Absolutely not. Yeah. Right. Um, okay. So he also did a documentary on Eugenia Cooney. And as many of you may know, Eugenia Cooney is a very famous, for whatever reason, anorexic woman. And it's actually wild that she is still with us. If you look at photos of her, it's just, it's deeply disturbing. and obviously she has been criticized a lot for kind of like glorifying her eating disorder in a way and Shane also talks about his own struggles with bulimia in this documentary and this you know had it got mixed reviews because you know like I said it's kind of glamorizing something that shouldn't be glamorized it was seen as exploitative he did use a licensed therapist as a consultant, which people praise.
34:44But overall, it was kind of poorly done. So also in 2019, going into 2020, this is when Jeffree Star and Shane collab on The Conspiracy Collection. Oh my God, of course. A new makeup. Yeah, exactly. And also the fact that Shane Dawson, obviously, like, makeup is not his thing. Like, why? I would never look at him and be like, oh, I will grab his palette. Yeah, exactly. What are you talking about? Totally, totally bizarre. But it ended up selling out immediately, generated tens of millions of dollars in sales, and remains one of YouTube's biggest creator merchandise launches of all time. I'm like so shocked by this.
35:25I just need to look at what, oh my gosh, it's like crazy metallic, jewel-toned colors that I would, and this is so 2016 too. Like no one would ever wear these colors. The conspiracy collection. I mean, I get, yeah. It's like alien colors, I feel like. Yeah. And 2020 is also when some of his past racist videos resurfaced, which we will get to. And he was demonetized on YouTube. Oh, my God. Like Logan Paul or I think Logan Paul as well was after the Japanese terrorist incident. Yeah. And he is actually demonetized. I think they may have monetized him again at one point. But right now he is currently demonetized to this day.
36:03So he doesn't make money from YouTube anymore. Um, okay, so October 2021, he returns to YouTube after a 16-month hiatus and moves to Colorado. And he said he was so grateful after being canceled. And, um, he announces that he's doing a new ghost hunting show with his partner, Ryland Adams, called The Haunting of Shane Dawson. So that's his new thing. Um, and his fans were apparently begging him to return. They missed him so much. So he does still have fans. he has fans to this day is rylan i'm just curious is rylan adams a man a woman yes yes shane is gay or he's bi he's bi sorry sorry he's in a relationship with a man gotcha okay yes so um shane like i said his views have gone down significantly um so prior to taking his hiatus in 2020 his views were around 20 40 million views per video i can't even i can't even understand that level of view.
37:05I know. It's crazy. And recently, his videos get about 4 million views per video. So that's a decline of around 90%. So again, huge, huge, huge decline. And then in terms of like his YouTube presence today, no longer super mainstream, still putting out content. He does a lot of more like lifestyle-y, like parenting content because now he has twin sons with his husband oh wow okay yeah uh and he also does his like ghost hunting stuff it's a little more low key like i said not as mainstream but he's still getting you know views like four million views per video is nothing to sneeze at um but it is crazy because he was like kind of the king of youtube at one point so he's definitely had a major major major fall from grace and this is why I don't know about you guys, but with summer in full swing, I am on the move constantly.
38:01And if you're looking for some footwear that can move with you, rather than slow you down and give you those pesky blisters, look no further than bionic shoes. 39:17I don't want to talk about it. Having something that's lightweight, breathable, cool, and easy to sleep in, no matter how hot it gets, is so freaking important. That's why I love Quince. Quince has everything you need to make your bed feel cooler, lighter, and more comfortable for summer. 39:46My absolute favorite is their 100 % organic cotton percale sheets and duvet cover. The material is so crisp and comfy and even has a cooling effect, which is obviously perfect for those hot summer nights. I also love the look of it. It's a soft gray gingham and just has this classic look that instantly elevates our bedroom. And I love knowing that we're sleeping on 100 % cotton and not some cheap polyester blend. I also love their mulberry silk pillowcases and eye masks. They help keep your hair smooth and skin hydrated overnight because they don't absorb your natural oils like other materials do.

40:50And if it doesn't, it's not because you have bad taste. It might just be a budget problem. Well, Wayfair fixes that. This is my sixth apartment in 12 years in New York City, which is crazy to think about. So when you move that much, you become less and less enthusiastic about spending money on new pieces. Of course, I still want my apartment to feel chic and elevated. but knowing it's not my forever home makes it hard to want to splurge. That's why I've turned to Wayfair for home upgrades for over a decade now. I'm obsessed with my latest purchase. It sounds kind of silly, but we were previously throwing our laundry in an open laundry bin that just ended up looking messy and cheap in the corner of our bedroom.
41:24It became an absolute eyesore, so I searched for closed wicker laundry bins on Wayfair that could hide the mess and add like a chic, beachy touch to our bedroom, and I found the perfect one for under$100. It seriously was such an upgrade to our bedroom. aesthetically and functionally, it's hard to even describe it or put it into words. And it's little purchases like that that can make all the difference in your space. Ready to upgrade your home for way less? Head to Wayfair.com right now to shop all things home and get your space ready for less. That's W-A-Y-F-A-I-R.com. Wayfair, every style, every home.
42:02let's go through his scandals so blackface like i mentioned the shenanay character which is crazy but he also did recurring blackface impressions of wendy williams and chris brown in skits he also did blackface in high school videos that resurfaced oh my god so she was showing up to high school with that that is so crazy yeah that is so i mean i i can't i don't even think I went to school in Orange County. Not that there was a lot of racism, but like, I mean, I don't know. I can't ever imagine this ever happening in my high school. Absolutely not. Like, what? Is this normal? I don't know. He grew up in Long Beach.
42:40No, it's not normal. Long Beach is like 30 minutes north of where I grew up. That is, it's a very diverse community. Like, that's crazy to me. Yeah, it's absolutely insane. He also, he tweeted, I've done blackface for Randy Jackson for a while back. It's like, oh, okay. So Randy Jackson also. Add it to the list. use, like I said, racial slurs in videos, the N-word, N-word with the hard R. He would play these caricatures, like I said, of Black celebrities, and he would throw around the N-word a lot. I'm sorry, this photo of him is very chilling. I know, it's scary. He looks deeply disturbed. Like, he doesn't, I don't even know what you're trying to do.
43:18It's just scary. And he has this wig on, his tongue is sticking out, he's doing blackface. It's incredibly, incredibly disturbing. If this man knocked on my door at any time of the day, like dressed up like this, very disturbing. What is this? It's disturbing. It's offensive. It's offensive. Horrible. He also, at VidCon 2012, hosted a controversial segment where he invited teenage girls on stage to participate in what he termed ghetto pranks. The skit relied on racial stereotypes and mocking Black culture. Jokes about chicken and booty dances. Just incredibly, incredibly offensive. um like i said the shenanay character uh you know with the fuck me till i bleed comment which is absolutely disgusting and horrible violent um again like date rape quote-unquote jokes like nothing about that is funny um and he ended up getting called out first in 2014 it didn't really catch on until 2020 during the black lives matter movement but in 2014 youtuber francesca ramsey who is known she's a black creator known as cheska lee on youtube and she called him out she's one of the first to call him out um so props to her because again at the time 2014 like people were still kind of like yeah this is normal this is normal to do this for whatever reason um and looking back it's like no it really wasn't normal really shouldn't have been seen as normal but for these youtube comedians quote unquote at the time it kind of was it's so bizarre but she said characters of Black people were literally created by white people to justify our mistreatment and oppression.
44:55She called him out for blackface, racial slurs, offensive cultural stereotypes. And Shane ended up removing most of the controversial videos and apologizing, but not before he mocked. He mocked Francesca. He mocked other people calling him out, minimized the criticisms he was hearing. So rather than apologizing initially, he became highly, highly defensive on Twitter. He attempted to dismiss the criticisms as hater commentary framing the pushback as an attack on his comedy and free expression or you could just call it what it is it's just racist like what free expression yeah and she said that she francesca said that she received death threats from shane dawson's and racial slurs from shane dawson's fans and wow we're out here canceling ashley simpson for lips lip syncing in that same year like do you know what i mean exactly the way that we were operating as a society back then is so ass backwards, it's wild.
45:47Yeah. And his apology was so, when he did finally apologize, it was like totally panned, rightfully. He focused a lot on how much the negative blogs and comments hurt his feelings rather than taking like real accountability for the harm that he caused. So then he made everything worse on his podcast. Oh yeah, he has a podcast, Shane and Friends. And he went on an aggressive tirade where he spoke about figuratively murdering and raping a female critic. And because this happened right after their public dispute, the internet widely believed the violent rant was targeted at Francesca. And Francesca had also recently opened up about her own sexual assault.
46:29So there's that. He claimed that he was talking about a different woman. As if that's at all normal or okay to say about any woman. Doesn't matter who it is. Like, oh, don't worry. Don't worry, guys. It's cool. I was talking about someone else. Do you know what it kind of reminds me of is David, the guy that killed his like underage girlfriend and put her in the trunk of his Tesla. Oh, yeah. He had very explicit song lyrics about literally murdering his girlfriend. Like if you're having those thoughts, that's a problem. Right. It's you're psychologically, you're mentally ill. I'm sorry. Like you have a problem.
47:02Even if it's just being seen as like a joke or it's just lyrics or it's just this. No, because you're still having those thoughts and you're still putting it out there in the world. Putting it on paper, then creating a melody against it. You know, sometimes when you're journaling or you're writing down your thoughts, it's almost kind of scary to see your thoughts written now on paper. That's like the worst thing you could ever think of written on paper and then distributed to the world. You were sick. Yep, yep, sick. And it doesn't stop there. So he also made jokes about pedophilia on a 2013 podcast that resurfaced in 2018, 2019.
47:36He talks about meeting a six-year-old who was an influencer. He calls her quote-unquote sexy, and he tells the co-host they wanted to explain his justification for pedophilia, basically comparing it to a foot fetish. And he said, first of all, let me just say, having sex with children or touching children or anything of that nature is terrible, and you should not do it. But here's my thing. People have foot fetishes. People have fetishes about, you know, everything. There's websites on the internet where they can look at that weird, creepy shit and jerk off to it. Okay, fine. Everybody do your thing.
48:03He then questioned why someone should be arrested if they masturbated to a Google search of naked baby. What? The, oh, I'm like so deeply disturbed by that. Just absolutely disgusting. Why? Okay, let me repeat that. He then questioned why someone should be arrested if they masturbated to a Google search of, quote, naked baby. Like, I'm sorry, I can't even get that sentence out of my brain. That is so deeply disturbing. No, I know. I told you guys, like, this episode is a, it's a lot. Like, there is just so, so, so many disturbing things he has said and done. It's absolutely disgusting. So this resurfaced in 2018, and he apologized.
48:42And he said that, you know, I made shitty jokes six years ago, and I'm sorry that I was so insecure that I had to play the shock value character. And he acknowledges that his so-called jokes from his early career days were offensive and horrible, and that the podcast clip was cut to make him look worse. So he's still, like, he's still always kind of making excuses. He's never fully taking accountability. He's basically saying, read the context. That's not really what I was saying. That's basically how this is reading to me. No, never is that sentence contextually okay. Yeah, exactly. It doesn't matter what the context is.
49:12Right. Yeah, it literally doesn't matter. And he claims that if you had listened to the whole thing, you would have heard about the experience that he called very creepy and not mistaken his failed jokes for the truth, blah, blah, blah. And he also reminds his viewers and loyal fans that this is a triggering accusation for him because he was molested as a child and has been publicly passionate about shining light and how horrible pedophilia is. And it seems like he, this becomes kind of a pattern for him when he's criticized. He says, but I had a traumatic childhood and I, this happened to me as a child, which is obviously horrible.
49:44But it's like so many people have traumatic childhoods and they don't grow up to be an adult who says and does these things and then doesn't take accountability for it. It's like a cop out. I'm not, I'm not discounting his traumatic experience of being molested. Like that's horrible and traumatic, of course. but it's kind of giving like i'm not racist because i have black friends yeah like let me just let me just quickly latch on to like the closest thing that's adjacent to what i offended and then just make it okay like whatever it's just not in good taste it's just excuse inexcusable totally regardless of your experience yeah it's just inexcusable also around this time old footage emerged of him emerged of him on something called tiny chat and omegle i remember omegle i don't i we're using tiny chat.
50:27It's where you would like talk to random people on video chat, live video. It's kind of like chat roulette. Yeah. And he there's a video of him talking to really young fans, like being kind of sexual with them. And it looks like almost like if you watch the video, it looks like he's jacking off under a blanket. Like it's very disturbing. Okay, let's talk about his cat comments. So it's not just, you know, rape jokes. It's not just pedophilia. There's also bestiality in there. So in a 2015 podcast episode, he described as a joke, he says, a sexual experience involving his cat. He says that he had done terrible things to his pets before describing in detail, one time I laid my cat down on her back and suggesting that he had performed a sex act on his pet, adding that he came all over her, all over his cat.
51:15I know. So he later said, you know, it was fabricated shock humor. I never harmed my animal. He famously took to Twitter and said, I didn't fuck my cat. I didn't come on my cat. I didn't put my dick anywhere near my cat. I've never done anything weird with my cats. And he said, I promised myself I wasn't going to make apology videos anymore. So I'll keep this as short and honest as possible. That story was fake and was based on a dumb, awful sketch idea I had years ago that I never made. Thank God. Why would you even think of that? That's the thing. It's like he says, you know, it was just like it was just a joke.
51:48It was just this. It was just a sketch idea. What like what is wrong with your brain that you even thought of this? Yeah, I mean, his brain is going towards parts of the world that are probably the most deeply disturbing things. And he's like chalking up to jokes. Yes, exactly. He said, yeah, he said my goal with the podcast and with my videos years ago was to tell shocking stories that would make people laugh and scream. Oh, my God, no, you didn't. And think I was so crazy. It's embarrassing. And I fucking hate myself for it. And he also like when he does apologize another thing he does is he goes, I hate myself for it.
52:19You guys should hate me too. He's like victimizing himself almost where he like wants people to feel bad for him. Like he's just, I find him so manipulative and disgusting, obviously. Let's talk about the Willow Smith clip that resurfaced in June, 2020. There's an old video of him mimicking masturbating to a poster of Willow Smith, who at the time was 11 years old. Jaden Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith publicly condemned him and he did not directly address Willow Smith in his apology that he ultimately issued. And he never really publicly apologized specifically to the Smith family. This prompted a significant loss of subscribers for Shane's channel, led to a lot of former collaborators cutting ties with him.
53:03Jaden Smith also tweeted at the time, this man was also doing blackface on the regular. As the youth, we need to create supporters to support us in our morals. This is not okay. So again, it was just resurface clip after resurface clip at the time. And this is when, this is probably when I think about it, 2020, when I discovered him through all of these scandals. Like I wasn't familiar with any of the good things about him. I mean, there really aren't any good things about him in my opinion, but he did have tons of fans at one point. And I was like, why was anyone a fan of him? I'm sorry. Yeah.
53:34And I'm like looking at this next thing about him taking accountability and he's like, here I am taking accountability. He does a whole apology video on June 26, 2020. And I'm sorry, but just because this is fresh in my brain of Love Island and Sincere, not that they're at all the same. I'm not comparing Sincere to Shane Dawson. I'm just saying when people always just say or do bad behavior and they're called out for it, the one thing that they just say rather than changing the behavior is just I'm taking accountability. They'll say those words. Those words are as empty until you tell me that or show me that you were going to do otherwise.
54:06Like people think that just using the words taking accountability absolves them from their horrible actions. It's like, no, no, no, that's actually not enough. Like, you just try to make it seem like you're owning it when in fact it's like, but every other action that you have done up until those words has shown me otherwise. So shut up. Like, I hate that. That's like so triggering when people say that sometimes because it's like, I want to see actions, you know? Yeah, exactly. It's just like lip service. Yeah. So yeah, this apology video, Taking Accountability, June 26, 2020. And this is, again, after hit after hit of all of these resurfaced videos.
54:41And he was like, I want to address them all in this one video. It was 20 plus minutes. He addresses the blackface, the slurs, the pedophilia jokes. And he stated there was no excuse for, you know, these racial stereotypes and his early comedic sketches. He also claimed that his controversial jokes were a result of past abuse from his childhood. Once again, I took that pain and I turned into jokes. And like I said earlier, like this is such a cop out in my opinion. I feel like he is bringing that up as a manipulation tactic in his apology video because he's like, actually, you should feel bad for me.
55:15And it's not only skirting accountability because like I said, so many people have traumatic childhoods and you're not really taking accountability here if you are attributing it to something that happen to you in your past because bad things happen to a lot of people. They don't do offensive, horrible shit like this. Correct. It's not only that, but it's also manipulative. Right. And if we turn that drama into jokes and poking fun at it publicly, everyone would be doing this. Like everyone has some kind of traumatic experience, maybe not to the extent of, you know, sexual assault or, you know, what have you, but that's not an excuse.
55:53Like, shut the hell up. Yeah. There's plenty of people that have been sexually assaulted or molested as a child that don't behave like this. So be quiet. Yeah, totally. You know, like I said, victimizing himself also. He said, I know I'm horrible. I deserve to have my career destroyed. No one has to forgive me. Again, manipulative. And his apology was met with mixed reviews. Some fans appreciated his willingness to lose everything, quote unquote, for his past actions. Other people felt the apology was insufficient and long overdue. and YouTube demonetized all his channels. Yeah, like I said, they demonetized him.
56:28I don't think they ever remonetized him ever since 2020. I think this is when he completely lost monetization on YouTube, which is very, very, very kind of unheard of. Like YouTube will suspend creators, but eventually remonetize them. And he was never - Yeah, they did that with Jake Paul. Or Logan Paul. Yeah, Logan Paul, sorry. Yes, I think, okay, so we were just talking about Jake Paul and I was thinking we have not done a Jake Paul episode. I feel like a Jake Paul episode should happen in the future at some point. We did do a Logan Paul episode with Logan Paul aficionado Shannon from Fluently Forward back in the day.
57:01So that was like our only guest episode ever, I think. Other than when we've had sevens. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So definitely listen to that if you have not. But yeah, just a shitty apology. And this is when he took his hiatus until 2021. Let's talk about his involvement in the bi-sister scandal. Bi-sister. So if you guys remember the Tati Westbrook-James Charles bi-sister scandal of 2019, this is when he was releasing his conspiracy collection with Jeffree Star. And people were saying that he basically was using this James Charles wallet. Also, we have a James Charles episode if you haven't listened to it.
57:43To profit for his makeup collection. Tati made another video in 2020 alleging that Shane and Jeffree Star were feeding her information for her video accusing James Charles of predatory behavior. And that Shane offered to help edit title thumbnail it. He was like, I want to get in on this James Charles takedown, even though he wasn't really directly involved. And James Charles, bad guy, predator. This is more so about the fact that Shane was trying to orchestrate something not for the better of society. He wasn't trying to orchestrate James Charles' takedown to be like, yeah, this is a predator.
58:21Get him off the streets. He was trying to orchestrate his takedown because it would be better for his collaboration with Jeffree Star, allegedly. Yeah, so Tati said that Dawson and Starr explicitly needed Charles marginalized and out of the way so he wouldn't compete with their multi-million dollar product launch that year. And immediately following Tati's video, Shane went on Instagram Live. This was so crazy as it was happening. Like, I forgot how crazy this was. Shane went on Instagram Live in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers having a visible meltdown, screaming at his phone, calling Tati manipulative, shouting that her tears were fake.
58:56So this is when she was saying that Shane and Jeffrey had been manipulating her. Yeah. So he was live streaming to 250 ,000 people and saying that she was fake crying, blah, blah, blah. You can hear his fiance in the background screaming, get off the live. And since Selena tweeted, Shane said, this is a fucking lie and I'm losing my mind. Don't die. Get off the live. I know. You hear that at the back. I know. I don't know why that's funny to me. he's having a literal meltdown so much co-mingling with the other youtubers like so much incestuous messy drama exactly it's so messy it's like hype house before hype house became a thing on tiktok we had the youtube celebrities and yeah they were all just kind of like competitive with one another trying to like push the pull the other down like this is so messy in i drama yeah i fully believe that even though James Charles was guilty of the things he was being accused of by Top T Westbrook, that also Shane and Jeffrey were trying to take him down.
1:00:00A hundred percent. Totally. The weather has been beautiful lately, which means I'm pretty much always out and about doing things. Errands, workouts, beach days, you name it. Protect yourself now at aura.com slash remove so his personal life from 2011 to 2015 he dated fellow youtuber lisa schwartz and in 2015 is when he came out as bisexual and broke up with lisa um and uh yeah he went through this breakup and also shaved his head which people thought was interesting at the time so he began dating ryland adams also a fellow youtuber in 2016 his now husband um And this is when he first started publicly talking about dating a man.
1:04:58And, yeah, people, his viewers started to notice a shift that he was kind of expressing his emotions more, embracing his feminine side, wearing more makeup. Again, like, I never knew Shane Dawson as a makeup user. Again, that's why I was so surprised that he released a makeup collection. but apparently he did start to embrace, you know, makeup and his feminine side a little bit more after he came out as bisexual. And he ended up getting engaged in March 2019. And I remember when he proposed on two knees. No, I am done. That's my favorite photo. It's so funny. And it's like blurry. It's like the funniest photo.
1:05:37He's on two knees and it looks like it was taken on an iPhone 3. Yeah. No, I was going to say Blackberry. Yeah, Blackberry. Yeah, Blackberry photos. Oh, my God. TVT to Blackberry photos. It's like in the dark. It looks like in like someone's backyard. This is 2019. It looks like Ryland is wearing a backpack also. It's just like so funny. Yeah, where are they? It's like pitch black. I don't know. It's like the flash of the camera. It's so bizarre. It's honestly hilarious. They were ultimately married in January 2023 after seven years-ish together. Um, he, like I said, moved to Colorado from California.
1:06:13Um, and they announced in July of 2023 that they were expecting twins, twin babies via surrogacy. And on December 10th, 2023, Shane became a dad, announced the birth of their twin sons. And like I said, now his content is more focused on parenting, family life, and also still this like ghost hunting, paranormal investigation stuff that he does. But overall, like I said, does not have nearly as much cultural cachet as he did at one point. He still has viewers. He has followers. He has people that keep up with him. But very, very, very irrelevant when it comes to the big picture of our cultural landscape and celebrity landscape.
1:06:58And deservedly so. Like, he is such a fucking piece of shit. Again, like his only tool in his toolkit was offending people. And there is a way to be semi-offensive in a funny way. Like I said, like, I feel like the Shane Gillis thing is relevant, not just because I'm seeing him tomorrow, but I think that he is a good example of someone that has been offensive before. Sometimes it crosses the line. Sometimes it, the majority of the time it does land and it does, you know, it is, it's funny. It toes the line between like offensive, but it also, that's, that's comedy. And I don't think that comedy has to be offensive.
1:07:32Like, I hate when comedians say that. Like, that one quote by, what's her name? Whitney. Oh, my God. Yes, I know who you're talking about. Whitney Cummings. Yes, yes. Whitney Cummings. I was like, Whitwulford. No. No, Whitwulford. Whitney Cummings, where she said, our job as comedians is to take you on a spooky haunted house tour of our darkest corners of our minds or something like that. It was like, no, actually, it's not. Not at all. It's supposed to just make us laugh. And sometimes that is at the expense of like, obviously, there are tons of jokes about like Jewish people that I find funny.
1:08:04Yeah, Asian people that I find hilarious. Asian people. Yeah, like we can both laugh at our like stereotypes if they're done in a funny way. Joe Floyd was doing so much Asian shit. I was laughing my ass off. He's also Asian. So it's like, it's like easier for him to joke. But like there are jokes that land that, you know, I can be the butt of the joke as a Jewish person or you as an Asian person. And it can land. But with Shane Dawson, it wasn't even funny. It was just fucking offensive. And again, I feel like he has surface level taken accountability, but not really. And so that's why I'm happy that Shane Dawson is irrelevant for the most part.
1:08:45Well, I'm on it. I just typed in Shane Dawson makeup and shamedawsonpalette.com. I'm just browsing the website because I'm just genuinely curious. The Shane Dawson conspiracy palette. This is not just an eyeshadow palette. It's a statement piece housed in a custom molded pyramid-inspired trunk with metallic clasps. The flagship Shane Dawson palette. Yeah. Which has 18 iconic shades that range from essential neutrals to radioactive neons. And also it says the finish. Buttery, blendable, and designed for 12 plus outerwear. Ew. But like it's just so extra. And I don't know who was wearing these colors.
1:09:19It's literally neon yellow, magenta pink. Like why was this so popular? Like, it generated tens of millions. Yes. No, I actually do remember this, like, flying off the shelves. Like, why? Who's wearing it? It's ugly. First of all, it's ugly. It's also ugly. It's also ugly. Second of all, they're ugly. Pick a struggle. Pick a struggle. So that is pretty much the gist of Shane Dawson. Let us know, you guys, if there's anything. Like I said, I wasn't really an aficionado of him. I wasn't really a fan of his ever. Well, I wasn't at all, ever. a fan of his. So let me know if there's anything we may have missed or if there's anything, you know, what are your feelings on Shane Dawson?
1:10:03Were you ever a fan? What are your feelings on him? I know, like I said, Christy and I kind of missed that wave of YouTubers, so they're not totally in our wheelhouse. So I'm curious what you guys think. And yeah, thank you so much for being here per usual. Let us know if there's another YouTuber we haven't done yet that is on your list. I feel like we have done a decent amount. Like I said, James Charles, Tana, Logan Paul, but there's so many. Jake Paulson, it works. Maybe Jenna Marbles, dude. I feel like Jenna Marbles would be really good. Jenna Marbles actually would be a good one. We haven't done a Trisha Paytas episode.
1:10:40Dude, she's everywhere now, I feel like. Yeah, she is very ubiquitous. but yeah let us know we love you guys so much and per usual we have bonus episodes and ad-free episodes on our patreon that link is in our show notes also our Friday newsletter goes out every single Friday so tomorrow with things that we're laughing at things that we're loving links to things that we're wearing skincare that we're loving all that stuff and yeah I think that's it yeah love you guys so much we'll see you Tuesday for another episode and love you so much bye Bye.
1:11:28Nothing makes you appreciate good bedding more than a hot summer night, especially when your air conditioning is broken like ours was recently. I don't want to talk about it. Having something that's lightweight, breathable, cool, and easy to sleep in, no matter how hot it gets, is so freaking important. That's why I love Quince. It's been my go-to for bedding for so long now with high-quality materials like 100 % European linen and organic cotton. You can literally feel the difference. I love waking up not sweaty. Quince has everything you need to make your bed feel cooler, lighter, and more comfortable for summer.
1:11:58From breathable sheets to linen shams and duvet covers in soft, seasonal colors, relaxed stripes, and timeless neutrals. My absolute favorite is their 100 % organic cotton percale sheets and duvet cover.
1:12:35Quinn's bedding is made for literal beauty sleep, you guys. And in case you need a reminder, everything at Quince is 50 to 80 % less than similar brands because they work directly with ethical manufacturers and cut out the middleman. 1:13:08And if it doesn't, it's not because you have bad taste. It might just be a budget problem. Well, Wayfair fixes that. This is my sixth apartment in 12 years in New York City, which is crazy to think about. So when you move that much, you become less and less enthusiastic about spending money on new pieces. Of course, I still want my apartment to feel chic and elevated, but knowing it's not my forever home makes it hard to want to splurge. That's why I've turned to Wayfair for home upgrades for over a decade now. I'm obsessed with my latest purchase. it sounds kind of silly, but we were previously throwing our laundry in an open laundry bin that just ended up looking messy and cheap in the corner of our bedroom.
1:13:41It became an absolute eyesore. So I searched for closed wicker laundry bins on wafer that could hide the mess and add like a chic beachy touch to our bedroom. And I found the perfect one for under$100. It seriously was such an upgrade to our bedroom aesthetically and functionally. It's hard to even describe it or put it into words. And it's little purchases like that that can make all the difference in your space. Ready to upgrade your home for way less?
