In short
The episode explains insider buying as “the one metric” for finding multibagger stocks, using an academic “recipe” from H. Nayat Sehun’s Investment Intelligence. It argues insider buying (especially by top executives) predicts future outperformance more than insider selling, particularly when purchases cluster and occur after price declines.
Guest backgrounds

Key claims
CEO buys are most informative; insider buying beats insider selling; context matters (buys during uptrends are stronger); trade size sweet spot is 10,000–100,000 shares; multiple insiders buying around the same time is especially powerful; selling can be non-informative due to 10b5-1 plans.
Notable examples
Anthony Noto (SoFi) bought $1M shares; KKR co-CEOs Scott Nuttall and Joseph E. Bay bought in a cluster; ServiceNow CEO Bill McDermott bought ~29k shares and canceled 10b5-1 selling; the biggest headline is Jeff Green (The Trade Desk) buying ~$148M shares (2–4 Mar) shortly before news of OpenAI ad talks.

You're in for a treat with today's episode because we're going to tear apart one of the most bullish signals that you can find for an investment. A bullish signal is something you can see that indicates a stock is going to go up. In fact, this is the most bullish signal as measured. on something that I will discuss soon. And Mike and I will discuss a few recent examples, and I'm going to tell you how to get that information to your phone the minute it is reported to the stock exchange as per the law dictates.
2:16Emmet:But before all that, it's St. Patrick's weekend here in Ireland, well, everywhere, and we are an Irish company of friends who are terribly proud to be Irish. 3:33Mike:back from my holidays i always laugh i feel like anytime i go on holiday something happens yeah so i think it was like friday and i checked the news and the netflix deal fell through and paramount won out and i was like oh that's that's not too bad that's a normal thing and then i think the day later it was like world war three and by the time we're back on the by the time we're back on the pod it's already over according to trump yeah which is funny like as in i always harken back to um i mentioned this on the pod so many times i've with bill mann and the scoreboards the s &p 5 is trump scoreboard and he cares about the scoreboard yes and you and you see like as in when he does something and then the market reacts he kind of has to go fix it a little bit every time do you know what i mean it's mad yeah yeah and like as investors i think it does put us in a in a better place to see a president that is that focused in on this one metric that obviously oh
4:25Emmet:yeah helps us there's never been a bigger capitalist i don't know maybe george washington i don't know enough about his history but the ultimate capitals reagan perhaps but i think capital success if you measure success by dollars in the bank are wealth accumulated pretty sure trump would be number one mike we've bits of housekeeping that i want to just get off my chest the first is i'd like to do a shout out to three listeners who in some way managed to get messages of support and kindness to me in recent weeks and i just wanted to reciprocate first up two young men who are rising stars i understand and who are destined for greatness so thank you Rory O 'Brien and Tom North for the privilege of having your attention and also thank you to Mark Buckley who wrote me a lovely note well wrote in to us but it landed in my inbox it was forwarded to me and I even saved a photo of it to my reel for the days I need to power boost my belief so thank you Mark for that okay Mike uh we said we would randomly select a name for anyone who subscribed to our stock of the month offer two weeks ago to receive one year of horizon completely free and as witnessed by you this morning i uploaded all the names of those who subscribed to chat gpt and i said randomly pick one of these names which was the best i could think of as a random selector we have that on record folks so if you need an independent adjudicator please write in to we don't read this at mywallstreet.com but the winner and it was genuinely randomly selected is kanwaljeet banga kanwaljeet banga delighted to welcome you to horizon for the year ahead okay mike that's all the stuff this week i think we're talking about insider buying
6:26Mike:yeah yeah i thought it was a good episode i just we talked about it loads of times and you mentioned in the intro kind of it's one of the key bullish signals um you've done a lot of research into the topic but there was just an awful lot of notable buys so as you know you kind of teased already we have our own insider bot which kind of highlights highlights within the parameters of what we set notable insider buys depending on who bought it the level of purchase the type of company etc etc And I thought it would be interesting to go through them, to go through why it is such a bullish signal, why insider ownership is such a bullish kind of component of a great stock.
7:08Mike:Not all great stocks have high insider ownership, but there is a big correlation. It's proven out to be that businesses with skin in the game, with CEOs who own a large portion of the company and have a long-term vision fare better than those that don't. Yeah. And then it paired well with just a couple of notable insider buys that came up from the insider bot in particular one. Don't say them yet. Don't say them. Okay. Okay. I'll save it. Save it.
7:33Emmet:Save it. Can I go out academic on it for a minute, Mike?
7:36Mike:This is the perfect setup because I think you've gone into this heavily in the past and there is a sweet spot, if you will.
7:44Emmet:Yeah. And it makes so much sense. I mean, when you see someone inside a company empty their piggy bank to buy shares in the company in which they're working, you know they're acting on an insight that we outside of that company are not privy to. And there's been tons of studies on this particular subject. But the one that is most lauded, I would imagine, is a book called Investment Intelligence from Insider Trading. And it's by a guy called H. Nayat Sehun. And this book is effectively a recipe book. It's the here's what you look for when there's an insider buy, because just any old insider buying any amount of shares, as your logic would dictate, is not really a formula.
8:31Emmet:What we want is a formula. So this is a well-known academic book that studies decades of insider trading data to determine what insider activity actually predicts future stock performance. um i don't know uh if it's the only book dedicated to this subject um i doubt it but it's the only one i've read 100 and i've read it a couple of times to go back and revisit uh my understanding and make sure my understanding is correct and there's a few main conclusions from the book which i'm just going to go straight to the bottom line and i do hope i'm not depriving Nayat Sehun of a few sales because I'm about to spoil it.
9:15Emmet:So apologies, Professor Sehun, if you're listening. So the main conclusions from the book are number one, senior executive trades matter more. So a CEO trade is the most informative. When you see the CEO buy shares in the company, she or he is running in that company, followed by other officers such as the CFO and the COO and then board members they're further down the ladder that is the most bullish signal so the most senior person at that company's activity is the most information laden and by the way an insider is a director or an officer or somebody who works in the company it makes sense they're inside the closed door they know what's happening up there as well is it someone who owns more than 10 % that's yeah that's true as well yeah that is correct so if you own if you own more than 10 %
10:08Mike:of the company i hope you know a lot more than the average investor out there that is that is correct
10:13Emmet:but a 10 shareholder generally will know less than the ceo no no for ceos so you're absolutely right so the the waterfall of knowledge up at the top of the pyramid and the most bullish signal is the ceo so that's the first thing we put in our equation we want to see ceos and i would argue cfos cfos are CEOs in robot mode.
10:42Mike:We're talking about the future and all the CFO is doing is modeling out future revenue, future profits, all the rest. If they are very bullish and they're putting their own hard-earned cash into the company, that's telling a lot. I think CFOs definitely go up there as well.
10:57Emmet:Oh, big time. You know it. And generally, if a CEO has to stand out of the business for any reason whatsoever for a period of time, the CFO has given the steering wheel. And that says that kind of illustrates the point. Okay, so the second signal that is documented and studied in the book is that insider buying is far, far more predictive than insider selling. And yeah, so buying basically only indicates one thing. I'd argue two things, but let me just stick with the happy path. It signals that the buyer believes that this asset, the shares in the company which works, are undervalued. However, selling happens for any number of reasons.
11:43Emmet:Diversification, or paying a tax bill, or some kind of liquidity event. Like I know a ton of entrepreneurs in Ireland and in the UK and even in America who are worth small fortunes living in the same house, driving the same car, eating at the same restaurants that they did before they created this so-called wealth. Not to say there's anything wrong with your first home. Your first home is as good as your last. And that's that. It's about the happiness inside. But generally, we start with a modest home. And I know people who have, on paper, created hundreds of millions of euro and dollars of paper worth in their own life, still kind of doing it the way they did when they were 27.
12:27Emmet:So taking some money off the table, as it's affectionately called, I'm going to take some money off the table, is just natural and normal. I mean, we're only here on this little planet in this mortal coil for eight or nine decades, if we have a good innings. And, you know, most entrepreneurs don't have access to any money before four or five of those 10 year lots have passed. So a sell event is just you can't interpret anything. And that isn't my opinion. That is comprehensively documented in the book, whereas a buy signal is way more bullish. Now, the second thing I alluded to earlier, there are virtue buys, virtue signaling, where you see a CEO buy a million dollars worth.
13:11Emmet:And if they're worth billions of dollars, it's literally they're not doing it to create wealth. They're doing to show, hey, look, I'm buying shares in the company that I'm running.
13:20Mike:We're going to get into that as well, because I've kind of highlighted a few recent ones and some of them definitely fall into that category.
13:27Emmet:Oh, I'm looking forward to that. I don't know what you're going to say, because I haven't seen those. um i know you've been looking more closely than me so the third sorry just before you get on to
13:36Mike:the third i wanted to touch on the selling as well because yeah i believe that this is sometimes misconstrued misconstrued as a negative uh signal by a lot of people because they see insider selling and it goes with say downward momentum they put two and two together and get five whereas an awful lot especially founders will have what's called a 10 10 b 5 1 um oh you have paperwork nerd but a bit but essentially what it is is it's just like i'm gonna sell x amount of shares every month on this schedule within these time frames within these uh pricing kind of uh pricing ranges as well and so unless you're like really tuned into what is an automatic sell what is like x what is y maybe his daughter's getting married uh you know whatever it is it's it feeding into what you're already saying of not to take a sell too seriously especially when you know they could own 20 of the company it might look like a big deal when they're selling 100 million dollars worth of shares but it could be absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things what was the name of that flute who run
14:43Emmet:who used to run gopro he was paid more in a year than uh bob eiger the ceo of disney like the body camera company gopro and and that the we're gonna have flying drones company that didn't happen and he paid himself and it's time to be corrected he might be a flute but i'm pretty sure he sold 147 million dollars worth of shares one year while we were all getting excited about gopro's opportunity which wasn't a good look so i consider that a signal but um your man uh spiegel at snapchat
15:17Mike:as well i just snap now he yeah pays himself an incredible wage um yeah in the form of shares which he then sells while the stock is trading sideways basically so yeah i don't know greed is
15:30Emmet:a is a funny old beast uh not to say any of these people are greedy so the third signal uh number one as we said the more senior the individual the more information laden number two insider buying is far more predictive than insider selling. Number three is all about the context. And insider trades combined with recent price movements contain more predictive power than either signal alone. So in plain English, if the CEO buys shares at a meaningful level, which I'll describe in a moment, while shares are moving up, it's a very bullish signal. So if you see a CEO and she's bailed in a pile of money to buy shares in the company in which she's running or founded, while those shares are already on the way up, we've really got herself a green light.
16:25Emmet:Now, trade size. Number four is the trade size matters. This is the one element of the book that I was always most uncomfortable with. and what the book says is that medium what what he says describes as medium-sized insider purchases which is roughly between 10 ,000 and 100 ,000 shares historically contained more of a bullish strong signal and this one always left me uncomfortable because as I said I felt a dollar amount was more important or a percentage increase in their existing position was more important like you're like 10 000 shares but what if it's only a penny a pop or what if it's a thousand dollars a share like it didn't for me make sense this is probably the scientists coming through of this is what the
17:19Mike:data shows without i know diving in too deep but yeah yeah that totally grated with me i mean you're
17:26Emmet:right i started my life on the physical sciences which is all about measuring stuff and understanding quantums and this to me never sat well but it's proven with data and according to sehun 10 000 to 100 000 shares literally units is the sweet spot so put it there whether you like it or not that's what the book says folks now there's more there's more there's four signals for you but the book actually starts to refine it a bit and goes okay so there's the there's the ingredients you need for the recipe but you still need to understand what to do with the ingredients and i'm going to tell you what that is so clusters of insider buying matter far more than single purchases so one insider buying shares is good it's interesting but multiple insiders buying around the same time is statistically proven as powerful because very seldom do insiders collude to hey let's virtue virtue signal at the cost of our kids yacht you know like it's they they when you have several insiders buying um that is a very very powerful signal and say unfound that when several executives independently bought shares within a short period future returns were meaningfully higher because insiders have different information silos inside the company if you're a chief technical officer apart from going in to a few meetings with your peers that the chief human h hrd human hr director human relations director is that the hrd um the coo CFO, CAO, CBO, all the other CEOs.
19:14Emmet:If you're the CTO, 99 % of your time is thinking about the technology of the organization in which you work. You go to the COO and 99 % of their time is on the operations of the entire house. And so it continues. Everyone is working in a silo, but when several of them buy simultaneously, it suggests the signal isn't just personal optimism. it reflects a broad internal confidence about the business that's been discussed by the board. They can see this thing coming and I'm pretty sure in the examples, I can guess one of the examples you've got on your sheet there, Mike, although we haven't discussed it.
19:53Emmet:But let's go there in a minute. So that's why loads of quant strategies focus on cluster buying. So insiders are best at identifying when a stock is deeply undervalued. They are not great market timers in general these are people are not professional stock market folks they're not in the sport of stock investing or you know they're not necessarily at the sport of stock investing um but they are very good at buying when their company is extremely cheap because they have as they say in the movie industry they can cut a wide shot and see things coming and say and found insider buying tends to spike after a couple of things large price declines bad news cycles periods of market pessimism you could guess all of these and those purchases often proceed longer term rebounds now before i shut up mike in other words insiders behave a bit like value investors they buy when sentiment is terrible so let me tell you or hit you with a bonus insight which is the strongest insider signal ever historically and it is when the ceo buys after a big stock decline and i'm i'm almost certain you're going to have an example of that so when the person with the most information and the most reputational risk buys after bad news it's very often a strong confidence signal now listen to this you actually mentioned this at the top of the show a few years ago i built a little bot that immediately posted to Twitter when there were insider buys that fit most or all of the criteria I've just described because I built a filter based on the book.
21:36Emmet:And I went, okay, there's the recipe. Let's just spit out the answer. And I even put the little bot's date of birth, the same as Peter Lynch, legendary investor Peter Lynch. So when you went on to Twitter, as it used to be called, and you went to at the insider bot, date of birth was the same of Peter Lynch's but I can't remember what that was but boy what a cat I am I thought you'd be sending him a card every year no but alas when Mr. Musk bought the social network and renamed it to X bots were banished from the platform for good reason I'm sure an insider bot was kicked out however he or it lives on and anyone who subscribes to Horizon as they already know gets access to a secret telecom channel where insider bot writes to with the exact same consistency and dependability as he did 2x before he was booted out so if you subscribe you get this tiny hidden freebie of massive value that's you just install the telegram app on your phone which is a messaging app akin to messenger and whatsapp and every time the insider bot has something to say which is several times a week as you and i know because it also publishes to our internal slack channel um multiple times a week uh you will get it delivered straight to your phone the moment supported to the stock exchange which is usually within 24 to 48 hours and as i said at the top of the show if you want to talk to a man about a deal email frank at my wall street.com and he might even get on a zoom with you right mike examples let's talk about insider buys because they've been flying at us
23:14Mike:thanks to insider bot recently yeah so i highlighted kind of the notable ones from that i'm going to go through a list of them first and then we'll finish with the biggie which is making the most headlines but i think it fits in because a lot of that fits into what we mentioned already whether it's the cluster buying whether it's the virtue signaling um whether it's the true kind of meaningful signal bullish signal um so let's jump in so the first let me shout let me shout out to
23:42Emmet:I'm going to interrupt you after everything you say with a three second random thought. Okay. I promise you it'll only be three seconds.
23:49Mike:Go. Okay. Okay. First one I'm going to mention is Anthony Noto, CEO of SoFi. He bought a million dollars worth of shares on the 2nd of March for$17.88 a share. He owns about$200 million worth of the company. I've seen him do this before. So in my eyes, not majorly significant. What I do find interesting is he almost called the bottom to the cent here. stock is down about 40 % from its November highs and Noto obviously saw a deal this isn't on the same page as the others we're going to list here uh but I do find it interesting and what you mentioned um about them not timing it very well it's kind of the opposite in this instance
24:29Emmet:that is in the Horizon portfolio a pitch that I bought it several times I think highly of Anthony Noto he used to be the CFO of Twitter and he's got brains to burn and I trust him I think he's one of the world's best business leaders love that although i agree a million out of 200 million
Read the full transcript
24:46Mike:yeah yeah okay okay next one up now this fits into the more cluster buy we'll say as the co-ceos of kkr you know kkr is the famous private equity company um it's been tanking this is two kind of bad news cycles which you've already mentioned are playing with each other there so there's the software sell-off uh so obviously most if any private equity companies will own a lot of software companies and then there's this fear around the private credit market as well which kkr is heavily involved in so both of those are coalesced the stock is down about 40 since july of last year actually interesting did you ever read that book barbarians at the gate at the gate
25:26Emmet:oh yeah great book i read that when i was too young to read it yeah it was okay kr were one
25:31Mike:of the main players in that whole fiasco they were kind of is that so i have no recollection of that yeah they're the early proponents of junk bonds which kind of fed yeah nabisco take over and everything else um so they're they always have a strong place in my mind whenever i look through them so their co-ceo scott nuddall and joseph ebay they both ebay that's cool uh joseph ybay why am i saying i'm breeding it in french they both bought about 12 million dollars worth uh on the at around 100 bucks a little over 100 bucks a share on february 17th what i like about this one though is that they came back 10 days later when the stock went down further and they bought another 50 000 shares each at 88 bucks a share oh and they're not the only ones so we're talking about cluster buying here so a number of other directors have been buying up shares too in the month of february and early march so that for me feels like a lot more than virtue signaling that
26:26Emmet:oh yeah yeah yeah i agree with you there's cluster buying that cluster buying is real that's not you know there's no board there's no team that decide hey let's all buy shares in this company because we want everyone to see it they don't do that that's just not a thing yeah very much
26:42Mike:fitting into the mold you kind of portrayed right before so that one that one i would push much more significant than sofi much more significant than the one i'm about to say next which is greg abel new berkshire hathaway ceo yeah he i don't know if he's completed this yet but he's committed his 15 million after tax salary to buying shares of berkshire hathaway that's
27:03Emmet:greg abel can leave that as a tip i just wanted to know that right i mean it would be a lovely tip and fair play to him if he did but yeah so a good indication of like cultural alignment
27:17Mike:doesn't tell us too much about the short-term business at all this is just going to be the thing he does to show his dedication loyalty because it's expected of him as well do you know what i mean that's and then he's going into warren to sign his mileage receipts he's like um
27:31Emmet:did you hear i bought 15 millions worth of shares and marlin is in what well berkshire boss our former boss warren is like but how come you claimed 115 miles to go to omaha when it's only 107 and anyway sorry i'm going off i'll write it play don't worry folks uh look if there's ever a ceo
27:51Mike:with higher expectations greg abel like he's going to do what's expected of him unfortunately he will and then last one i want to talk about which i feel is significant as well even though it's not a huge uh nominal value is service now ceo bill mcdermott so on the 27th of february he bought about 29 000 shares at around 100 bucks a pop it's only about three million dollars but it's significant because it increased his stake in the company by about 20 percent now you can imagine mcdermott hasn't been an insider service now for long he was only brought in in 2022 from sap his career ceo um but for him to go because career ceos are kind of viewed as mercenaries in a sense to him to go out into public markets and spend his own money is a good uh i don't love how little of the company he owns for a public ceo uh that's not enough skin in the game he is remedying that fact but it is important to get that skin in the game so you know it's kind of a seesaw in a small bit uh he almost nailed the bottom two which i found interesting which is going against what you were saying but on top of that him the cfo and a couple of other executives they actually cancelled their automated selling plans that 10b51 i mentioned earlier so they just do not want to be sellers at this price which i do find encouraging because you're talking about being able to identify when their own company is undervalued and that is very much that that that is what that is signaling like they're refusing they have an automatic selling plan you know i get stock grants in the company i automatically sell them because that's how i make money blah blah they're cutting that out they're much happier to keep those shares in hand than sell them at this price.
29:36Mike:So I think that is significant. And I think the fact that they're buying at the bottom is significant. So yeah, that's a good mix there. And I think that goes to show that while this is a bullish signal, you have to be able to decipher the difference between virtue signaling, what's actually bullish, what is just posturing and what's automatic as well. So like I said, I'm sure that'll make headlines that'll pop up in an insider bot or wherever else greg abel is buying shares and everyone knows berkshire hathaway and what is this thing but then you look into it more and you're like actually it's not that important but what is 100 significant is the next one i'm going to talk about and this is the one that's been making headlines which is the trade desk ah i knew you'd say it yeah so the ceo and founder jeff green bought six million shares that's a bit above your ten thousand between March 2nd and March 4th at prices ranging from about$23.50 to$25 a share.
30:38Mike:It was worth$148 million.
30:44Mike:It's something we always track and there's always a kind of few, oh, look at that moment. I know the business. Oh, that's interesting, whatever. But I don't really remember anything to be this big. Do you know what I mean?
30:54Emmet:No, I don't think so. Your man, the guy who did, oh what's that a competitor competitor to atlassian um he was a former just dustin markovich
31:05Mike:oh yes yes yes um it wasn't monday yes he was buying shares like good oh a billionaire a
31:12Emmet:billion there you're like really and honestly i've never seen it was phony it was like again your spider senses start tingling but i only mention that because you said you never saw an insider buy quite like jeff green and i agree with the exception of your man dustin what's his
31:28Mike:head and that's a good call yeah he was oh no i got it wrong now he was a founder of facebook originally i know yeah i'm trying to think which one he was in the social network but i think i have it wrong i was going to see he's under garfield but he's not oh spider one that was eduardo severin i think anyways i'm getting way late so yeah shares the trade desk they're down about 80 % since their all-time high in December 2024. Seen a pretty major slowdown in sales, and that's thanks in no small part to Amazon quickly becoming a major competitor with its own third-party ad network. It's taken away a number of key accounts from the Trade Desk.
32:05Mike:This is a stock you had a dalliance with last year, and this isn't like you, but you got in and out quickly, which was very appreciate looking back at it from what the stock has done since, which I found quite interesting.
32:16Emmet:Yeah. Oh, for sure. and it's a stock i got very well familiarized with and it was a it was a stock that was very much in focus by the retail investing community in general and it's the real deal it's a phenomenal business that's done extraordinarily well um but you're right i got in and a couple of weeks later the wind was changing uh the the revenue accelerate revenue growth was decelerating and uh there was just a few elements that i just didn't feel comfortable with and you're right it's down quite a bit since but i think what's most relevant and interesting about that insider buy from jeff green recently was the news that followed a couple of days later
32:59Mike:100 percent uh like we're getting into this do you know what i mean and and i what's interesting about jeff green as well is that i assumed he owned a lot more of the business than he did which uh which kind of shocked me was he the founder i'm pretty sure he's the founder
33:14Emmet:Yeah, right. Okay. Dilution is a beast. Honestly, it really is. Unless you're participating in every round, you'd be left.
33:20Mike:Well, that and then this falls into the automated selling plans as well. But I think also what a big factor was is that he had a monster pay package back in the day that was attached to stock options of the company. So I think he was the highest paid CEO on Wall Street in 2022, or he was close. He nearly made a billion dollars or something. but now with the stock going down when those options don't come to fruition because the stock is going down we end up in this situation where okay he doesn't actually own as much of the company as he as you would expect him to so maybe that is what is motivating the big buy as well but then you're going to talk about the timing yeah so two days after he initiated the buys i think no he's initiated his first buy on the 2nd of march and the news came out on the 5th of march that the trade desk held talks with open ai to sell ads on the platform so open ai just launched ads last month and for the start at least it's going to external partners i think it intends to eventually build its own in-house ad marketplace similar to what you'd see with facebook or google but at the minute there's 910 million people using chat gpt at the minute the vast majority of them aren't paying anything that's a huge potential ad market and if it is temporary or not for the trade desk you know even still that's numbers it hasn't really seen in terms of just sheer volume now not all llms are going to have the same resources to go back and build their own ad tech as open ai is so this could be a real proven ground for the trade desk to become a leader in this area so hence the stock was up i think the stock is up he started buying on march 2nd and by march 5th when the news of the insider purchases came out and the news that open ike open ai came out it was up 22 or 23 percent in the space of a couple of days which on top of 148 million what's that nearly 30 million bucks um now what i want to know and i don't think this has really been answered is is this not insider training i mean exactly i was as you were talking
35:23Emmet:i i'm like i was thinking i have got to go back to rule book and remind myself because these ceos at that level they have a chief legal counsel who advises them on exactly what they can and cannot say into a microphone let alone what they can do so i'm i'm really interested and glad you said that because i was like i don't know what i don't know but i don't know something what like is in it that
35:46Mike:the the rules for insider trading are like i think simple enough on paper to be proven is the big difference or whatever else but it has to fall under material non-public information and i don't think any of that was public before it came out. The news came on the 5th of March.
36:03Emmet:Sure, Beryl Martha Stewart was absolutely thrown headfirst into the slammer for buying the price of a ham sandwich's worth of shares in her own company or whatever it was because it was like, what? Don't lock her up. The Americans love her. Don't put her in jail. We won't know what to cook. But she was thrown it was quite a minor infarction. But I'm not saying Jeff Green did anything illegal because i don't know but i'm sure i'm sure he was asking his lawyers can i do this like uh-huh yeah oh yeah yeah yeah yeah in fact sorry even worse he i'd be quite certain he can't budge without the lawyers giving it the green light like i don't believe he you can run a business of that size and notoriety and just decide to log on to schwab and type in 148 million And Schwab brings you, go, are you sure?
36:52Emmet:Who is this? Oh, it's me. It's Jeff. Oh, Jeff, here. Just click the button. Yeah, no, I think they've got to be wrapped up in governance. Nobody wants to see the perp walk. Not in America. I don't want to do jail in America. It looks horrible.
37:05Mike:No, that's true as well. But like, yeah, I don't know. On the face of it, it just seems very weird. But again, I don't know enough about insider trading to know if it's illegal or not. But it's bizarre, isn't it?
37:19Emmet:it is bizarre i'm glad you said it because i i nearly didn't say it because i was like okay i'm gonna unveil my ignorance here but he bought like 150 million bucks worth of shares a couple of days before the company announced that it's suddenly gpt's advertising partner i was like hold hold on back up the truck here now what happened yeah so um i don't know the end of the story i don't have
37:41Mike:it but there's definitely worth talking about especially oh yeah there's a couple of other ones that were interesting mike i don't know if you picked up on them uh oh i didn't include uber
37:52Emmet:right why not that was one of the two i was thinking of yeah cfo bought a small enough
37:58Mike:amount it is small enough amount but it did increase their overall holding quite a bit so probably should have included uber but i didn't have more to say than that
38:04Emmet:yeah but what is interesting though and you mentioned bill man earlier in the podcast and it was in investicon sorry no it was the horizon member event two years ago we're on stage in the irish stock exchange he said that thing about trump's ultimate uh like donald trump his scorecard is the s p 500 but he also said a another thing on stage that uh day which was and let me just search my memory banks here it was that a cfo in by is now as appealing or more appealing than the ceo buy because everybody's watching the ceo and nobody watches the cfo the cfo's name is so rarely known like you and i know jeff green granted this is our sport but you and i could do a roulette and name the ceos of a whole pile of companies i'd argue you and i could rattle off hundreds of ceo names cfos hey look anthony noto was cfo of twitter i only know that because he's now the ceo of sofi like i kind of uh i just don't know any cfo so when they buy they know
39:15Mike:they're invisible you know okay that's interesting so there'll be less virtue signaling there i like
39:20Emmet:that yeah yeah and it just kind of sounds right that's why the 10 000 to 100 000 units of stock didn't sound right to me i'm like no that don't make no sense but yeah apparently makes sense but But I do think the CFO one, yeah, I'm going to trust my intuition with that. We saw one recently. What was the second one I missed? Skyward. Skyward. It's a recent pitch I made on Horizon. Skyward Speciality or Specialty Insurance. They're like Kinsale. But a few of their insiders bailed in recently. The insider bot tells me. And I was quite excited because I'd only pitched it in recent months. In fact, possibly just last month.
40:00Emmet:I can't even remember. Yeah. but yes skyward insider buys nice okay very good i think that i i don't really have a
40:10Mike:ball to tie this up with so we were finishing on accusing a public ceo and it's great isn't it
40:16Emmet:great we get to find out folks in a good shot did you hear what your man nuber did what do you do buying shares in his own company that can't be legal oh it is it's legal yeah it's good gossip but it's also good information it's real information a couple of years ago we had an intern we've had many many many many interns and they're all very intelligent which bugs me my god this guy's got too much brains i can't send him off to the photocopier but ben was a the whiz kid in mathematical finance in one of the important universities and i said here come come here to me young fella have a look at all those insider buys and tell me how they all worked out and the insider bot had amassed an absolute ton ton like 10 years this robot had been tweeting away and hey guess who bought what guess this guy bought and it was a lot of information on on um on a kind of pivot table and ben went off and diligently figured how did all those insider trades go since up until the day where he days where he was conducting the study and the net bottom line was amazingly well and i'm sorry folks i don't have the exact number but it was like uh when he showed me it was like my face lit up with a gold color like you see in the movies when a chest opens because i was like wow that's amazing yeah the inside of bars this is why we track it you know oh sorry oh for sure but um we so yes and don't forget with horizon you get the insider bot to your phone that information's worth something folks we never even mentioned that as a perk so come on and you can talk to other horizon members and you can tell each other and it's great or that emma is getting it wrong but i tell you what i ain't leaving this room to succeed so put that in your pipe and smoke it okay all right that's insider buying done you're going to
42:12Mike:finish up with a bit of uh following profit before we end the show yeah we forgot i forgot about
42:17Emmet:now okay so right folks it's following profit where you mike or i spotlight one of profits current 10 stocks are just tell me what to do service it always holds 10 stocks and it rebalances every four weeks so easy a child could do it though children should not do it i am not advocating that this is bought for your trial that's being bought for you anyway as usual i need to caveat that we are talking about a service where we don't it's not human led but this thing was built with more data than you could ever believe um 17 years of 26 investment books being tracked daily and when i was sitting in portugal two summers ago um i told my family to head on home i'm gonna to stay here and have a look at how that thing went and profit was born and one particular method annihilated the others completely outstanding results so you mike and i and the team started to tweak a few of the parameters one of which was that the 10 stocks that profit talks about can be bought with any brokerage you could have entry-level beginner baby pants broker as per any financial app right through to the most sophisticated brokerage in the world you'll always be able to buy these 10 stocks and then all you have to do is buy an equal amount and in four weeks when we say sell these two sell them take the cash and buy the new two and then go back to sleep for another four weeks and its results are stunning so since profit launched it's up 1 900 sorry since we clicked go on this method in real time we didn't back test this stuff It's up since December 2009, 19 ,000, sorry, 1 ,982%, which in plain speak means it's up nearly 21-fold, okay, in 17 years.
44:20Emmet:In the last five years, it's up 136%. In the last 10 years, it's up 530%. It's the just don't make me think service. So I thought just to shake things up a bit because the true value of profit is just being subscribed. I thought for fun I just listed 10 stocks that are currently being held by profit. Because hey, what the heck, you can do nothing with it because you just can't. So the ones added this month were MCOR, IES Holdings and Oshkosh Corporation. So who would have heard of those? We've never spoken about any of those companies. and the one the other seven are how met aerospace which is up 111 percent since it was bought into the service jabil circuit incorporated it's up i need my glasses something like 17 percent carpenter technology corporation comes in at number five and it's up 58.7 percent since it was bought med pace is in there a stock we know we've discussed you love i love it's down four percent boo uh nvidia is in there who doesn't know nvidia uh dicom is in there and ulta salon you and me brand ambassadors so they're the 10 stocks that are currently in profit and come on who would have guessed ies holdings inc i don't even know what they do it doesn't matter to me because all i do with profit and everyone inside of me in my family in other words my sons and my wife are all in on profit they're like they know i'm tinkering over there with horizon because i will find the next hundred bagger and i know which one it is already but i just need another 15 years before it plays out um uh all you have to do is just do what it tells you it's brilliant email frank so that's finding profit profit very good i like the echo thank you okay emmett great episode

We’ve pitched you businesses and described graphs, but this week Mike and Emmet put the power in your hands and teach you how to find multibagger stocks. And it can be as simple as one metric: insider ownership.
Inspired by the beloved book Investment Intelligence, we show you how to monitor and understand insider buying. This includes which executives to pay special attention to, how much is considered a meaningful purchase, and how to distinguish between virtue signalling and genuine investment.
Overall, insiders are great at identifying when stocks are undervalued, especially when that undervaluation is driven by poor market sentiment. They might not be the best at timing the absolute bottom (to be fair, who is?), but they often reap the rewards over the long term.
Emmet also reveals that the insider signal with the greatest historical returns is when a CEO buys shares after a large decline. If they’re willing to stake both their reputation and cold hard cash on better days ahead, it’s worth paying attention.
It’s also an apt time for the topic, as there has been a flurry of insider buying recently, so Mike walks you through some of the biggest headlines.
Anthony Noto, CEO of SoFi Technologies (SOFI), bought roughly $1 million worth of shares on March 2nd, almost calling the bottom to the cent.
Scott Nuttall and Joseph Bae, Co-CEOs of KKR & Co. (KKR), also stepped in to buy shares despite growing concerns about the private credit market. With the stock down roughly 40% since July, the pair each purchased 100,000 shares across two rounds of buying. The cluster buying suggests leadership sees an opportunity.
Greg Abel, Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) and Warren Buffett’s designated successor, has committed his $15 million salary to buying Berkshire shares. This appears to be as much a cultural signal as an investment decision, reinforcing Berkshire’s long-standing emphasis on alignment between management and shareholders.
Jeff Green, CEO of The Trade Desk (TTD), bought nearly $150 million in shares at the beginning of the month. The stock has fallen significantly from its highs amid concerns that Amazon (AMZN) is building its own competing advertising platform. However, news broke on March 5th that The Trade Desk may partner with OpenAI on advertising opportunities and the stock soared. But everyone thinks the timing is a little suspicious.
Andrew Robinson, CEO of Skyward Specialty Insurance (SKWD), has also been buying shares. The company recently caught Emmet’s eye so he was excited to see the disclosure.
