In short

“Back to school” special about the end-of-summer dread, seasonal depression, existential thoughts about time/death, and practical “winter blues” coping tips (abstinence, hobbies, reading, community, and reducing social media).

Guests

Susan and Luzan (co-hosts). They discuss their personal weeks, festivals (Dry Mollen in Tilburg, Netherlands; Raleigh; All Points East), and their creative/work plans. They also mention their partners: Bill (Luzan’s boyfriend; hobbies like mudlarking; touring/creative life) and Sophie (a friend referenced in the “back to school” segment).

Key claims

End-of-summer anxiety is mainly weather/light and can trigger seasonal affective depression; quitting smoking/drinking helps mood/voice; winter blues can be beaten by “lock in” routines, finding a hobby, reading, and joining supportive communities; online relationships and school social dynamics still echo modern online behavior.

Notable examples

A passage about fearing the “fun ending,” quitting cigarettes (cold turkey) and improved singing voice, festival stage/drone details, mudlarking for fossils/pipes, and book recommendations (Dreaming of Dead People; Let Go My Hand; This Is Not a Pity Memoir).

28Hey Chicago, class it up with Crocs. Legally, we can't say drinking Storm makes you smarter and more focused. But with zero sugar, 200 milligrams of caffeine, and immunity support, you're smarter and more focused for drinking Storm. Storm. Good energy in, good energy out. Energy for life. So, so, soggy. So, so, soggy. Right. Um! Um! Piss. Piss. Piss. Piss on my useless life was body and it set me on fire. Did you see that we got on a Spods thing? Yeah. Shout out to Spods. Mummy. Are we asleep now, Mummy? If anyone doesn't know who Spods is, Spods is one of our favourite accounts on TikTok who makes edits of us sometimes and clipped up our last podcast amongst some brilliant moments of British culture.

31It is so funny. So check S-B-O-D-Z on TikTok for all your niche talk needs. Hi, Susan. Hey, Luzan. You okay? Yeah, I'm good. How are you? I'm really, really good. Thank you. Yeah. I noticed I say good, good a lot and sound like a kind of a nonce teacher or something. Good. How has your week been? Nonce teacher. Speaking of, I'm back to school. How's my week? Yeah, really nice. I really missed a week. Just been enjoying myself. Yeah. So not doing any work then? Yeah. No one's giving me any work. Someone please book me. Please. Yeah, not been doing any work. Just been loitering about. Went to Bill's mum's art show.

15That was lovely. Bill's who's art show? Mum's art show. Bill's mum's an artist? Yeah, she's painting. Wow. She did the one of them on the wall that was there. I love mum's getting into painting was it a later life thing or has she always been I think so I think she's always done it okay yeah that's sick she's a legend and then I went to the beach on Sunday which beach did you go to there's one in like Dover and then you have to like walk I put a picture of it on and someone was like is this the Dover like ladder beach and I was like yeah not Seven Sisters no I did that walk once I did that walk once I'm never doing it again yeah You're pulling my leg But yeah No Thank god Okay nice But what about you How was your week Sexy lazy The candle has been Fully burnt To it's To it's Wicks And max capacity There's no wax left Yeah There's no scent Left in the candle It's just The wood wicks It's just a dying ember Yeah I was at a festival Called Dry Mollen that sounds horrible with all the love in my heart for you that sounds awful it was really fun it was obviously like going into it I was kind of a bit stressed because a little bit behind on my work you could say and you know it's been a it's been a fun summer and you know we're in September 9th now and the battery is the battery is depleting I just really remember It'd be like March And we'd done like I don't know Eight podcast episodes And we'd be like Yeah Yeah We're rolling And now it's September And I'm like girl Yeah And now No no It's like Reality beckons Yeah I felt like two minutes ago It was the start of summer That was the end babe Now it really is the end But yeah Dry Moline was very fun I was just telling you I saw your friend Reese who I see At every single festival so shout out to us because we're the ones partying the hardest yeah um you had a send it summer yeah i did have a send it summer but it was it was only two days um i was quite sensible was hanging out with all my friends that went to uni with so i don't really hang out with them that much anymore so um that was lovely and it's it is an amazing festival despite the scary name yeah um it's like it's got all these amazing it's in a it's in a little place called tilburg in the Netherlands.

49Oh shit, it was in the Netherlands? Yeah. Oh, I didn't realise. Such an easy flight. 50 quid return to Eindhoven. 40 minute flight. Don't mind if I do. Girls, if you want a weekend away go to Tilburg. Tilburg, honestly, Tilburg with the divas. Cheap beers, nice people, lots of cycling if you're into that. And Spliff. And Spliff. But anyway, the festival was great. If anyone is into kind of horrible dance music It's the place to go. It is the place to go. The stages are like nothing else I've ever seen. They really put their whole pussy into making these stages cool. There's one with a pit. Ooh.

32And it has a drone flying above it that shines a spotlight down onto the crowd. That's cool. And moves around. God, it's like seeing Tiesto, but in real life. Yeah. It's like Tomorrowland for heads. For cool people. Yeah, exactly. Because Tomorrowland has those I guess Boomtown has these ridiculous stages as well But I had a very fun weekend Oh my god yeah Was that this year? Tomorrowland yeah No but Boomtown also had a fire like many years ago Try my one's next Anyway I had a great weekend And I'm just feeling like You know Well I felt like this last week and then I fucking went to a festival But it's very much There's no festival this weekend It's very much you know I've said it last week I'll say it again the pill is wearing off yeah and winter beckons change that pill to a vitamin D supplement yeah so don't be gay I just mean oh I did have my first happy Tuesdays though oh did you I thought you were going to say gay experience I was like I did get with Angus at Raleigh but did you do that but that's standard kiss it and cuddle yes oh I loved the Raleigh video I really loved it with crack there's one video of you at the start where it's like showing you walking around rally and then you're just like you're just like oh i look like nervous you're so nervous and i was like oh me and bill watched also everyone's a bellend at that festival those questions oh yes i'll be listening to like someone even said lauren duffers like and i love lauren duffers and i like screamed because like she's literally a friend i love lauren um but i was just kind of like i was like everyone's giving such wanky answers and then someone said lauren i was like work and then they went back to wanky answers and i was like work like i feel like it felt like a niche festival.

19Everyone was being really niche. It is niche. It is. It's not just a niche festival. It's like where where that is rewarded and like the everyone is trying to say a cooler answer or a more different answer. But I was so happy that someone said Lauren because I was like that's so nice because she deserves every success. Yeah. But no. But yeah it was like wow. It's also like But you did a really good job and you really smashed it babe. Thank you. It was weird doing it um oh cap cuts popping up on my desktop sorry lads um it was weird doing i haven't really done much vox pop it's weird doing it i feel like there's a tendency for us especially to be silly gooses yeah and as soon as i got there i realized that well i had i did anticipate it because of the magazine crack is quite serious and rally's quite serious yeah that like maybe uh it wasn't going to be like that so it felt kind of weird but also refreshing for me to not trying to be like well yeah sometimes it's nice to not be like yeah yeah zany goofy i would struggle doing it yeah no i don't think you would have who's your favorite niche artist if they said someone weird i'd be like all right it would have been you would have been sick of it yeah but like ultimately it's all about um like even the way you come up go up to people and go like hey so sorry to bother you but like i'm asking people questions i feel like um not to to our own horn well you especially are very good at that you just like it's all about just being charming and non-inventing non-threatening res yeah as i would call it you have a lot of non-threatening it's all about non-threatening res life is all about non-threatening res life is worth living um but yeah that was fun and um maybe the start of my TV presenting career.

08Who knows? T4. T4. Oh. If there was T4, we would present. Yeah, we'd be on it. Me, you, Leia, the Opia Girls, and maybe Zooey. Simon Amp still making a comeback when he stops being so boring. Yeah, I'm gay.

26Fag it. But anyway, on this week's episode of Straight Diva, it's a back to school. Yeah, back to school. Back to school special. Back to school. Let's go Sophie It's all I can think about at the moment Sue And I feel like anyone I speak to Has this kind of Panic It's almost like New Year's again Yeah it is I think that this is a more vital New Year's than New Year's Yeah And it really reminds me of like Sunday scaries Feeling times a thousand But so I wrote a little reading I wrote a little passage Just to start off this section and then I'm gonna ask you a question so here it is are you scared of the fun ending are you scared of winter weather or are you simply scared of the remorseless cycle of time and as every summer goes past your appetite dwindles though it should and it must it's good that it dwindles, you are still begrudgingly marching towards your inevitable end.

33And though layering that new Nicholas Daly under your oversized trench will hit differently when you roll pub with the gang, partying every weekend in the winter really loses its charm, like a 45-year-old man wearing superstars. So green juice now, start looking at marathons, make all the overreactions that will underwhelm because when it really comes down to it, you can live with the colder weather and darker evenings. You are just lazy. You are poisoned. You are a creature of eating, cumming, and loafing. You live for fleeting moments where you forget who you really are and that's it. So, Sue, I think, why do we hate the feeling of the end of summer?

46This episode is brought to you by Facebook. So you were scrolling on Marketplace, and there it was, the bike you'd been searching for. You sent a message, and it turned out the seller was super chatty, kind of funny, and an avid cyclist. The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew. Well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook.

24Oh, feel a bit existential. This is what I've been going... This has been my head for the last two weeks. Just that passage over and over and over. I don't think the drugs are helping. No. Why do we hate the end of summer? No more babes in bikinis, am I right? I'm going to miss you langers. right so obviously there's the weather there's the light I think it is primarily the weather I think even like the other day like when it started raining like all week it got me down I felt seasonally depressed oh god I forget that that hits me every year like a ton of bricks and there's like a week of my life in October where I want to get killed but I don't know why do we hate it I think it is the weather You'd think it's just weather And the heat, obviously being cold Is not nice So I've been going under a rabbit hole As you can tell from this little stupid thing Who's Nicholas Daly again Nicholas Daly is a fashion designer From London Who makes really nice Well, most well known for Really nice tracksuits I think I know Very very trendy at the moment with with straight east london men i would say um but he's a really great designer um but anyway as you can tell from this passage i've written there is the weather and the light obviously and sad uh seasonal affective depression for any of you that didn't know um but i've obviously been getting a little bit more existential is it something deeper?

11Is it that I've been having so much fun and I don't want to work because I'm lazy or is it that a bigger existential thing that I'm like how many of these summers do I have left? I think about death all the time. I think about death all the time because I've got to a place in my life where I really enjoy it. yeah and i'm like i think about it where i'm like okay statistically and realistically i have two more of the goes that i've already had like i'm 20 i'm 26 so i've probably got like two more of those in me so say like 30 my partner certainly i think we've got sorry what do you mean by that like so realistically hopefully with health care and such and so forth we got till we're 90 till we die right so realistically with bill for example i've got 60 years with him so we've got two more of what we've already done together, which is nice.

06However, I'm just kind of like, that might not be true. He might get hit by a bus tomorrow. Do you know what I mean? Like, I'm so scared of death now because I like my life. Do you know what I mean? So I think the same now where I'm like, okay, I'm enjoying it at 26, but who knows what will like come at 28 or like 31. People get like lung cancer. Not me though, because I stopped smoking. When was the last time you had a cigarette? Two weeks ago, nearly three weeks ago. Wow, sweet. Yeah, but I really quit. that's great it's really hard and it's like it's not that it's really hard for the uh the like wanting one it's really hard for the emotions that you go through because your body's so used to having nicotine in it babe it was like being depressed again have you been having any like nicotine no i just went cold turkey so that week after i was like crying in bed and i was like i have depression okay wait run me through your um i'm enjoying this digression run me through your emotional process like quitting cigs no no no like the feeling of when you go from like I want a cigarette to crying okay so you don't want a cigarette so what I did in Montay and like Provence was I was smoking too much I was smoking to the point where I was like this is gross then I came back from the thing got really really drunk at all points east and then was like I've got to stop drinking and smoking so I stopped smoking did end up having a drink in Bath was sick again and I had three drinks and my body's like clearly just like girl please stop drinking so i was sick so much in bath the next morning and then hello um and then still i've had a cigarette but a week later i was like in bed a week after and i was just like you're just miserable like you want to die it's horrible wait from the feeling of not being able to have one no no moreover like i think your body like once needs it so like and then you just have like uh like a hormone imbalance because your body's so used to having like...

57I think I honestly just smoke out of fucking boredom or like it's a nervous tick. But what I will say, what I will say, what I will say is my voice is so much better. Like singing voice. Really? Babe, before I have to like warm up to sing. I've just, I've been putting things on in the kitchen just being able to like sing it and I was like, oh, like I can actually sing. I was just absolutely shagging my voice from being drunk all the time and smoking. so I'm going to stop smoking and drinking until the end of October and then I'll probably have a drink at the end of October but I really don't want to go back to cigarettes because I literally have asthma I've got really bad asthma as well you have asthma?

34babe so bad I've got like two different inhalers shit I think you did tell me that actually yeah it's crazy okay wow how did we digress to smoking? how like seasonal depression seasonal depression I think smoking doesn't help and I don't think drinking helps either I do think there needs to be like a period when it changes from summer to winter just to stop drinking to just like feel awful because you're going to feel worse yeah we were talking about being scared of death yeah and wanting to lung cancer and quitting smoking yeah do you do you get existential about the end of summer or like are you quite happy with the passage of time i'm quite happy with passion of time and i don't really regret anything nor do i think like oh realistically i've only got like i'm thinking a lot about what you said the other day being like we're in the years and i do believe that but i'm like you'll be in the years for however long you want to be in the years and then i think some people stay in like especially all the girls that are like in the scene they've stayed in the years and probably be in the years for a long time like there's a lot of people in the scene who are like 40 50 that have like stayed in the years and like you kind of look at them like do you know do you know i mean gosh let them party yeah well yeah Not forever Yeah Like Miss me Like do you not just want a morning stroll Like what happened to that girl I want to rave Yeah I want to hear that baby Yeah I'm just scared of the party ending basically Really Yeah And Yeah I think it's similar to what you touched on It's Life being good Yeah And not wanting that to be over Scared of it being over But it's never really over If you don't want it to be over Because you're still there at the end of the day.

17Your party still continues. But I love partying so much. And also, once you do like five festivals in a summer, the hangover's like barely anything. Yeah. I'm so seasoned right now. My liver's just like on fucking 20 % the whole time. You'll smoke paprika. Yeah.

40But apart from quitting smoking and drinking. Yeah. What else are you doing Like this winter To kind of Going on tour That'll do it Going on tour with Lapsley Which is a dream We're going to London 02 is Linton We're going to Manchester Gorilla Which is nice Actually quite a snazzy establishment I once had a K-hole In Gorilla Manchester And thought I was in the 02 in London and O2 Arena. It was really fun. We're doing Rough Trade in Bristol. We're doing somewhere in Newcastle and we're doing Glasgow. Fuck. That's amazing. Thank you. Where are you most excited to go? London.

32But like, do you know when you go to gigs at like O2, I'm like, I deserve to play here. And now we'll be playing here. So I'm just like, do you know what I mean? I don't feel nervous over this shit because I'm like, this is what I deserve. Am I being thick? Where is the O2 in Islington? like in Angel oh have I been there? well it's O2 Kentish Town yeah it's not that one it's like the one in Angel like the software Angel Station um okay that's amazing so you're putting yourself into you're doing some abstinent stuff you're doing some quitting of stuff yeah in order to real focus on that stuff uh and yeah you're putting yourself into work yeah trying to be a better artist this winter um and then I'm releasing the project what about you?

12what are you doing? Wait when's the project coming out We don't know yet The project is out I actually don't know But it's out Keep them guessing Yeah I will So I think there's a few things here And you've already touched on a few of them There's There's some sort of abstinence Which comes naturally After like People's summer Because they've gone on holiday They've eaten a few too many You know Moussakas Or something And there's a natural inkling to pull it back. Clean behind the head. And I think that is good, but it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt because it does, or at least for me, lend itself to the bad parts of diet culture, maybe.

06But I don't think doing Sober October or So September or anything is a bad thing. I think it's only good. But I haven't really figured out my abstinence thing yet. I know that I want to limit stuff in some way. I think I might try kind of limiting rather than completely detoxing. Because I feel like I have a problem with yo-yoing, as it were. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like the...

36But it... Yeah, and then it's time to lock in. It's time to prioritise our music. We've been silly gooses for long enough. I need to finish the multi-screen EP. Period. The second single is supposedly coming out in 15 days on the 24th of September. Nice. We'll see how that goes. Yeah. It's a banger. Is it a hit? It's a fucking hit. It's a fucking hit. It's about annoying people in East London. Nice. Slash myself. Yeah. It's about my own diary. But, oh, bye, Sophie. So, yeah. It's about music. It's about fully realizing my goals. Yeah. And maybe taking my foot off the gas hedonistically. No. But I've also got some more straight diva tips to beat the winter blues.

36Okay, I'm ready. Mud larking. Period. Yeah. Bill does that. Bill does mud larking. Yeah, he loves it. Really? Where does he go mud larking? The Thames. Yeah, so I'm yet to go mud larking, but... You should go with him. He loves it. For anyone that doesn't know about mud larking, it's basically where you get a metal detector and scan through all the rubbish on a beach to hopefully find a fossil. On a shite, on a beach. But you probably find just a coin. he finds like piping like old piping like smoker's pipes and he makes art out of it what your boyfriend's so cool he's actually sick but like i guess mudlarking is a kind of a jokey reference to well half jokey i actually would like to try and do it once maybe and then never do it again but like i don't really have any hobbies i've got a bit let's talk about it i've quite a busy life so it's fine i have no hobbies and i guess you can say music is a passion but like when it becomes your job it's different yeah it's pretty different but and then it's like i always say like oh i'd like to pick up painting but it's like i've got enough girl

49don't do shit bitch i'll pick it up and i'll put it down i'll pick it up again but it's like don't you've got enough. On one hand, I feel like I've got enough shit on. Yeah, but you do need a hobby. I feel like I don't have any hobbies. Well, because I was saying this to my friend America when we were at the beach, is I was like, I don't have a hobby, and that's okay, because I'm trying to find one. However, I need to actively try and do things that like,

15influence me, inspire me, to be able to find it, because I don't have any hobbies. But then when I'm alone and everyone else is doing things, I feel incredibly lonely. That's it. and I feel like incredibly without like a point. That's it. We need a hobby for when we're alone. Yeah. And so like, and I'll figure out what it is, but like I've got a New Year's resolution starting in September, which is every week I have to go out on myself one day and like do a me day. I like force myself to do something. Even if it's like go to a gallery, I fucking hate art, but like, or like, but I hate everything.

47I really don't like anything. Like it's really bad. You'll find something. Yeah, I hope so. Like I really do hope so, but I really don't like anything that strong. The things that I like loads is music, talking, and social media, and they're all my jobs. So they've immediately become unfun because they're my jobs. Not unfun, but I'm serious. And you love love? I love love. You love Bill? I can't suffocate Bill anymore than I already do. You love kissing Bill? I love kissing. You love Sophie? I love Sophie. You can't walk Sophie though, she doesn't go outside. I think the most obvious thing is nature.

21Yeah that's why That's why I went to the beach But we live in a shithole I know we get trains places I also have a car Like I can just drive places Should we start doing nature walks Oh my god We should I've got a car We should go Let's go to The Peak District Alright fine Because that's where I'm from I'd love to do that Because that's the thing about One of my tips to beat the winter blues Was to you know Walk or explore the rest of the UK Because The thing about London It's not That great Options wise I'm happy to hear you've been to Dover I might have to hit that up myself It's so easy Obviously everyone and their nan has been to Seven Sisters And it is beautiful but Very busy But if you live in Manchester or the North Yeah you just go anywhere There's so many nice places Go kill a woman, bury her in the moor What else do you want to do?

11Literally Tips to beat the winter blues, murder someone Yeah Murder people Yeah I would love to do that yeah we need to get back in the fiat we should like literally it's outside we could go vroom vroom vroom we should though we should just like drive places um maybe we should set a goal to each pick up a new hobby by the end of the year yeah that's what i'm trying to do like we should do an end of year check-in on how we did okay but i really like your goal of that already that already sounds like it's going to lend itself to a hobby yeah well the thing is my My affirmation that actually really settles my brain in all of this is I'm literally trying.

51Like, I'm trying. I'm getting up. I'm getting out of the bed. I'm fucking trying, girls. No, I'm not trying, but it makes my soul feel better because it's literally like, well, as long as I'm fucking trying, it can't come any quicker than it does. And also, I mean, I talked to Bill about it. I can't come any quicker. Yeah. Come on. But I talked to Bill about him. I'm with people who have real hobbies. And Bill's got so many good hobbies, which is amazing. And I'm quite envious of people with hobbies. and when people like, and my friend Francis has loads of hobbies, goes to choir and shit and does wood carving and stuff.

20But it's like, none of that would get my dick hard. However, I'd need to find what does. My instant reaction is one of cynicism. It's like, fuck off. I know, I feel exactly what you're saying. I was literally googling choirs the other day and I was like, well, yeah, my friend said, I'm going to join the choir at Avalon Cafe and I was like, that's disgusting. Like, fuck that. Where do you get off? Oh, God. And sing what? You can't sing... I can't even sing right now. You can't sing ARCA songs. It's not. Hi, we are Avalon Cafe Choir, and we'll be covering Hudson Mohawk. Whenever you get the tear.

05Yeah. Yeah, nothing holy is happening in Avalon Cafe. Yeah, exactly. So, yeah, we need to find a hobby. The fuck knows what it's going to be. Mudlocking, maybe. Maybe get back into Supreme. I love Supreme. Yeah? I have a couple of Supremes in there. Like, start getting back into... Reselling. Yeah, reselling. Did you do that? No. I was in, like, a couple groups. Were you in the basement? I was in the basement, yeah. Were you in the basement? No, of course I wasn't in the basement. Look at me. I think you could be in the basement. I could now, look. Wearing Stussy and Izumiaki. Yeah. You're a streetwear girl.

43It was pretty fucking laddy, though. And it was pretty nerdy. There's some Chinese in the basement, though. Who was the photographer for the basement who was trans and I was talking to? Was Sam Moore Smith in the basement? Were you ever a reseller? No, absolutely not. I never buy anything of worth. Who was in the basement? Trans. I think it was Sam. Sam Moore Smith? Yeah, Sam Moore Smith was in the basement. And they really helped him through his transition. Didn't know that. That's sick. I love him. Yeah I was never a huge reseller I did buy a couple of supreme items And then sell them but like they weren't I bought the Nan Gold in collab Obviously I never queued for anything I only got stuff online That didn't sell out immediately And I just thought I wouldn't buy like a box logo No, Bogo Three bar logo I would just buy more subtly branded stuff because you're quite luxury it's very you yes okay what else is the straight diva tips to beat the winter blues stop using IG browser a lot of you people what's IG browser so a lot of my friends deleting Instagram the app because it's bad for them but then they'll go on the browser version on their phone that's even worse just as much or worse, you're going on Facebook Reels.

12The worst bit is... Get a grip. The worst bit, honestly, is like... I actually can't pull a thought together today. I feel like I'm a diet. I think you're doing great. I go to say something and I'm like, oh, lost it. I'm like... I think you're doing great. I think this is a good episode. I hope. Instagram. Instagram. Yeah, please. Yeah. Lost it.

39Oh, those people that delete Instagram Because if you go on Instagram and look at a picture of a pretty girl or pretty boy And compare yourself to them You should not have a phone That's stupid Wait, what? You don't do that? No, what? Look at people's Instagram and be like, I wish I was like that No No one's like me, no one has my popcorn I think if I'm in a low moment, I do Well, I wish I looked like that I never think that It's not as direct because I think I wish I looked like that But it's like, oh, I'm not as hot as that really oh my god that's so not me really i just don't feel shit like that that's amazing i'll go on it and i'll just scroll to the point of like i literally it's more like when i'm on it so much i'm like what am i doing with my life it's not like looking at other people and be like what am i doing with my life it's like i look at some people's shit i'm like good for you how did you get to that place of mental thought i've never ever ever ever compared myself to anyone online do you know why i felt someone who thought god she's laying or he's laying i wouldn't i want What?

34In my life, I swear on my life. I remember talking to my friend Rachel about it at uni, and she was like, I do that. And I was like, I don't. That's not something that I do. I see beautiful people on my page and stuff. I just see beautiful people. What's that beautiful people song by Chris Brown? Beautiful people. Yeah, that one. Yeah, we won't sing anymore, because otherwise the woke police will come for us. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. I'd hit him with a car. I'd kiss him and then he'd go what the fuck and then I'd batter him with an elbow and then he'd call him a fair good

10yeah but he makes good music though yeah or that but I love his music did you hear what he did to Rihanna yeah but like I think you can forgive people can't you can you my separating art from artist is so grey I think it just crucially depends on how much you like the artist Yeah, it depends on how good the album uses. You love Kanye West. I don't stand with what he stands with, but his music is undeniably... Or Radiohead. Woke, please. I don't know Radiohead, really. Radiohead are one of my favourite bands, but they're currently getting dragged because they're kind of maybe Zionists. Oh, get rid.

55Who did you just say before I said... Azealia. Azealia, obviously. Like Yeah I think it truly just depends on how much you like the artist Do we always actually feel Iggy Azalea Dr. Luke for you Iggy Azalea hasn't done anything wrong has she No she's just stupid

15Oh Kelly I feel like most people don't Like enough and the crime was so bad So bad that he can rock Michael Jackson Yeah Love Michael Jackson Michael Jackson But yeah, okay, sorry, back into the tips to beat the winter blues Read one book Period Read one book I'm reading a book You're reading a book right now? What are you reading? I just read Take My Plough Over the Bodies of the Dead Yeah And then I'm reading one now called Thinking About Dead People Which is really bleep Thinking About Dead People, what's that about? Wait, sorry, I'm looking at my book I think it's Thinking About Dead People Or Dreaming About Dead People And it's about this girl who's lonely She wrote a whole chapter about her cunt and she kept calling it her cunt.

03And I was like, reading it on the other ground, and I was like, she was talking about her cunt. And she was referring to her cunt? To her vagina. Okay, cool. I loved it. Sorry, and that was called? Dreaming of Dead People. Dreaming of Dead People. Can you just Google it? Yeah. Dreaming of Dead... Oh, God. Yeah. Yeah, by Rosalind Bowen. By Rosalind Belend. Belben. No, it's Rosalind Belben. Oh, she looks lovely. She looks so lovely and she was just like, my cunt, I put a fucking thing in my cunt. More than 40 years on from its first publication, this exploration of one woman's thoughts and fantasies is a gem worthy of rediscovery.

45It really is amazing. If this novel is confessional as it seems, it is truly fearless, death, ageing, anorgasmia. Wow. Loneliness, despair and manners. It's a lot of loneliness, though. And it's really strange because I'm just, one thing I'm not at the minute is, though I feel lonely, I know I'm not lonely. Do you know what I mean? Okay, let's dig into that. Well, I'm like, I feel lonely a lot. Yeah, me too. But it's because I make myself feel lonely. Like, I neglect myself. Because I literally live with my boyfriend and have friends talk to me every day. What do you mean you neglect yourself?

14That's who makes me feel lonely is I make myself feel lonely. So when I'm alone, I don't know what to do because I don't have a hobby or whatever. Right, right, right. So I just sit in and just feel lonely. But I'm not lonely. that I haven't poured any time into myself, but I poured time into loads of other people. Like, I'd much rather buy someone a gift than buy myself something, so I'm forcing myself to buy things. So I bought some shoes the other day. Bought myself a ring. I was going to buy myself a ring, so I bought myself a sapphire diamond ring. Placing your self-worth in material goods.

37Let's go. And I really want to buy a Chanel bag. That's how to beat the winter blues. Yeah. A Chanel bag. Honestly, just buy one nice thing. Just spend thousands of pounds on a Chanel bag. Yeah. Life hasn't changed me. One of my tips to beat the winter blues pigging back off not being good alone is to finally listen to the voices in your head and hear what they're saying. Because I feel like summer is just distracting and drowning them out. Maybe you start to just gently ease yourself back into hearing what the voices are saying.

16But anyway, I'm reading a book called Let Go my hand by edward dock which i don't read many books but the the books i do read are often about daddy issues um and there's um there's another book called this is not a memoir it's a love story which is brilliant which is about uh this woman's husband getting encephalitis losing his memory i've read it and it's not called that it's called this is not a pity memoir it's not a pity memoir It's a love story I've got it You've read it I've read it Of course I've read it I love that book I've got it in there I literally told Bill Because I was moving out my house And I was leaving a bunch of books there And I literally said You need to read that book It's so good And I was like Such a bit of you And I literally I swear on my life I literally thought I was like I wonder if Louise had that That's the illness that my dad had Fuck off Yeah Where he forgets her And then she stays with him And they've got to like Get remarried Yeah Except he didn't remember my mum

15But it's one of the best books It's one of the best books I've ever read It's so good Anyway, Let Go My Hand is a similar-ish book about a guy taking his dad to Zurich because he's got some terminal illness. He's got a cold. And he's like...

37Killing my dad in Zurich because he's got a cold. He's got man flu. But it's like... Killing my dad in Zurich because he's got a veruka.

51Bazooka that Vruca Bazooka that walk Bazooka that walk Um He's taking his dad To Geneva And He His brothers Don't think That his dad's Gonna go through it His dad's basically Saying I need to die And you don't know Whether it's gonna happen And it documents Their drive To Geneva But it's got flashbacks Throughout Yeah But it's really funny Um So that's what I'm reading Read one book Uh What next I'm glad you read This little bit of memoir I'm so happy you've read it I can't believe Sorry, so you came across it because? I used to go to Daunt Books all the time. Yeah. That was kind of like my hobby for a while.

26I'd like have a day off. Read it. I'd go to Daunt Books and I was a gay that worked there, like a gay old man. He was so kind and we used to just kiki and he kind of just knew what I liked. Yeah. And he was like, you should read this. And that was I. It's literally there. And it's the pink one there. You can see it. Oh, yeah. I'm not even kidding. I've got it on my wall. Have you? I love it so much. Just nailed it. and I've also got How Music Works by David Byrne which I think I don't know how I've still got it up there because it's the ickiest thing if I've ever had someone back I'm like what would you think of me if you had a book that said How Music Works like we get it bro you make music yeah anyway self-loathing How to Beat the Winter Blues join a cult yeah could do that what cult would you join The Thinkers The WhatsApp group chat The screeners Which actually you should get on that 19th of September Keep that date in your In your pair I still can't look at the group chat It's still going It's still going Yeah the chat They chat every day It's like It's a community It's mad So my friend Alvin said the other day Did I say this?

33You've spoken about Alvin before I don't know what you're about to say But like my friend Alvin was saying That on LinkedIn People are referencing the group chat Like music industry People are like referencing Really? Yeah Like God Everyone wants to be on my dick Well I mean what I will say Is that You're disgusting What you've done with your Or your community have done Isn't necessarily Replicable for everyone No for sure It's like Your fans are active And I really like them as well Because I'll just get random texts from people Like yesterday it was like Sue I've just been listening to Straight Diva and we should be called the thinkers goodbye yeah and you're like okay like but like i might work like you people have my number yeah yeah same scary but i i started one for my night i love my wife yeah and it's it's completely dead no it's not it's it's fun when it when it pops up every now and then it's funny and people in it are funny but it's not like i think there's something about um i don't want to presume here i wonder what you think but i think it's maybe because it's and we get messages about this a lot queer people finding online queer people find online spaces yeah yeah for sure because they find especially if you're not from a major city you find it harder people who are either moving to london or live in london and they're like going about getting with trades and like kiki and we just chat and like there was someone in the group chat the other day and they were like i just didn't get this job for this modeling job and then they followed up a couple days later and they're like but i've just got scouted because we were like oh babe carry on it's going to work out it's a really nice space where people are just really kind to each other it is lovely every time i go in there it is lovely it's just like if i had it on i would my phone would be beeping every two minutes yeah and i don't know how anyone doesn't have it unmuted because it would just consume my life it's a key though it is yeah 19th of december no 19th of september join the group chat there's going to be a live stream and also live show at the same time if you're in london there'll be deets soon but if you're not in london it'll be streamed but but but but yeah too sorry to be clear that's also for you you should come okay um yeah to be clear i'm not hanging on the group chat the group chat is great um if anything i'm envious and like so proud of how you've created such a wonderful place.

04Thank you, that's very kind. So, while I was being silly saying join a cult, actually maybe join an online community. Or a real community. And see what happens. What else have we got? Drink every day till Christmas challenge. That's awful. Just like, just skip it. Just skip the sober bit and just go straight in.

29That's it. And then... Sorry, my brain is moving slow. We've got 20 minutes left and I've still got three segments to do. Okay, well, let's just spin it. Let's fucking spin it. Okay, so in the spirit of back to school, I want to know, do you have any seminal back to school memories? Can I give you mine first while you think about it? So, summer holidays start when I'm 13 years old, right? And I start to get a crush on this girl who's friends with my best friend's sister. Let's call her Sarah. Sarah. Hey, Sarah. Hey, Sarah. And literally, the last week of summer, school breaks up and I message her on Facebook like, Hey, what's up?

29but because it's summer is beginning we don't really see each other in school and I'm 13 years old so I'm probably a bit nervous to say hi to her in school anyway because all the lads will be like why are you chatting to that year below girl you fucking pedo so anyway summer breaks up and we start messaging but she goes to Sweden for the whole summer because she's Swedish Aryan tings Sorry So she goes to Sweden the whole summer So I don't see her but we are messaging Every single day So it now Steps into like online territory And we're in love and we say like I really like you and blah blah blah We've never fucking spoken to each other in person Babe I get it And then And then I think we break up over text Like in August or something And then we go back to school and we never speak to each other.

28That is fierce as fuck. Because we're both too scared of what our friends would think by speaking to each other in a public space. That's crazy. And that's what going back to school reminds me of. It reminds me of completely online relationship and being a massive pussy. Fair. Have you ever had any... Online relationships? Completely online relationships? Yes, there was a guy called Mark from Ireland and we were the same age and we were like 14 and he was like, do you want to be boyfriends? Because at the time, I was a boy. Crazy. And we were like, yeah. And then after a while, I was like, why have I got an online boyfriend that I've never met?

06Right. I could be getting my pom-pom stretched. So we woke up. Poor Mark. But I wonder where Mark is now. I bet he's dead happy. Fierce. What do you think he's up to? Well, I don't know. Probably not in Ireland. Do you think he moved on to more online relationships? Absolutely, yeah. But that's just been online and gay when you're young, I guess. but that was it that was my only like wow I was trying so hard to be online and gay by doing just an online relationship yeah trying so hard to be gay but back to school what does that feel like to me I don't really know I was always I was like such a like a grubby kid like when school come back around I was like oh I didn't get a new school bag and I just go with the same shit that I had last year but I was just like fuck it I don't care I really did not care what I looked like at school at all what was your like social status at school No I don't think anyone fucked with me I was the gay one But like I wasn't bullied or anything Because it was like bully or get bullied Sorry when you say fucked with me You mean in an English sense Not an American sense What does that mean?

07Like so if I fuck with you I wasn't bullied In an American sense It means like I approve of you You're my friend You mean nobody like messed around Yeah yeah yeah We had a really good friend I was friends with like all the people So there was like the popular girls and then there was like the beautiful like because the popular girls are also beautiful but they're like the popular girls and everyone saw them as popular girls right but they were good at sports yeah and I was like but there was another group of girls which I was involved with who were like the actual the actual beautiful girls and actually had things going about them we were like online we were all on Tumblr and stuff right so we weren't like alternative but we kind of were and we'd hang around and like that was kind of like how I saw school and then there was the rest of them and like but everyone fancied me and my friends not me obviously everyone's fancied my friends and so like um we'd keep we just kiki so we're kind of like untouchable and i was very mean and i have a very cutting tongue you're very mean oh babe you wouldn't call me a name because i would make sure that me and my friends never let up on you until you were hurt wow not hurt as in like beat up but like we'd like i'm really not proud of how i was at school verbal assault yeah i wasn't very nice at school okay i wasn't very nice but like it was either that or like people weren't nice to me so i was like you'll be killed yeah so i'd kill okay um yeah i remember i remember many a time people leaving the classroom like crying because we just wouldn't stop it was that relentless and i remember being taken out of class by this teacher called miss everyone loved and everyone's like she's the art teacher she hated me and one day she said to me she was like you need to tell your friends stop and i was like i don't control him and then she was like she was like stop and i was like stop what and i'll just play i was i was a nasty bastard in school.

47What was it nasty? I was surviving. Yeah. And it like, and just don't come near me. Like why, why be mean to me? I just wouldn't let out. I would go on and then boys would try and offer me out and I'd be like, all right, then hit me then. You're not going to get very far. Hit me then. You're not going to get very far, are you? I once gave a guy a seizure in a rugby match. That's fierce. That was probably my lowest moment in school. Because you knocked him about too much. He was basically quite small but really powerful and he was fucking everyone up on our team and I was like I need to fight fire with fire here so then I did what is commonly referred to as a high tackle and kind of dumped him on the ground and then apparently he had a seizure and I got sent off by our head of sport but yeah it is kind of kill or be killed a bit unless it's like I was going around bullying people it'd be like people would start on me I just want to make that very clear like if he started on me I wouldn't shut the fuck up like if you started it I'd finish it I'm saying I feel like also it's an it's an asset having humor in your pocket because you can it's like a defense mechanism but also you can kind of be liked by everyone even if you're not necessarily the most popular kid yeah like I wasn't like sporty I wasn't that sporty or I wasn't in the upper echelons but I was in the kind of the same similar groups as they're like the the the slightly the tumblr people the kids that were like got it yeah got it got it yeah it was like that and there was like a bunch of boys who also weren't like the popular boys but they were the boys that got it and so we'd all hang around yeah and they'd smoke weed and we'd like just keep in we just watch yeah we just were like to go home now and we just go over get a Chinese from Coco Sun we're so nice I'm going to drive back there I think I'd really like to drive back there and just sit And also No offence to the people who were The ultimately popular sporty people But where are they now?

49Where are they now? They got lip fillers They all peaked in high school Whereas the Tumblr people Be out here Have a podcast A brand manager Or fucking creative directors yeah where do you think we learn how to mood board yeah think about that real transferable skills um any school slang for me yes i do i have a four four pieces of derbyshire slang and it's not even just derbyshire slang school slang it's like native to my school so okay spidge spidge okay Spidge is when you Pull someone's trousers down No It's like Have you got any spidge? Oh have you got any spidge? Change? Weed? No Chewing gum Oi Yeah yeah yeah Have we got etymology of that?

43Have you got any spidge? That was it You got any spidge? Fuck That was it I burped on mic Fuck it Have you got any spidge? But why? No idea Because famously There was also like Have you got any chud? Which is chewing gum Chud and spidge? Yeah Chuddy was like what everyone used to use in every school in Derbyshire but Spidge was our school I don't know why it was that you can't do Spidge regional like Catalan versus Spanish yeah basically Bathigan yeah rate rate yeah what is it not like I rate that no no okay rate

23the price of something no like are you okay you rate You're right? You're right. You're right. Are you coming from like all right? Okay, okay, okay, okay. So it's nothing to do with the word right? No, no, it's like right. Okay. Like you're right. Wow. So I'm going to say all right to right. You mean right annoying? It's like you're speaking a different language. All right, dog. All right, dog. Finally, be at. You've said be at before. I know, I have. I was fucking be at. Like disgusting No it's really good It's a fucking B out Which I think is B out Which is I think kind of like out there I don't really know A lot of I was thinking about my old school slang And a lot of it is just good or bad Yeah Like Fucking B out Like buff Yeah Peng Yeah Or moist Moist Moist is crazy Injection was a big thing at our school I've seen this on TikTok talk what is the tea so injection could be like a pinch but i think more prominently in my school it was like if you were stood outside a classroom waiting to go in yeah and you're like maybe leaning against the wall or something um if you like got your shin out and then went like that on sorry got your foot out and then went like that on their shin yeah kicked your heel into their shin that's an injection paralyzing pain everyone goes into the class you're just like writhing in pain so that would be quite fun um and then scrape did scrape make its way to derby you don't know what scrape means oh scrape was the best word like anytime someone tries to get involved in a joke or a conversation um and they maybe haven't quite grasped it yeah you go scrape out or scrape because they're scraping in.

26They're trying to... Like a scrape the barrel kind of thing. They're just... No, it's like they're trying to crawl into the circle and you're like, scrape out. Yeah, okay, back out. It was really cruel but quite fun. And then we've obviously got Skat which hasn't aged as well and ASL was one I thought of. ASX Locations. Yeah. Which was probably more online, obviously. but was quite fun and of its time I think. I don't really hear many people saying ASL anymore. So that was back to school slang. Should we end on Oh wait, have you got any Q4 trend productions? Not really. Do you want to hear mine?

10Yeah, I would love to hear yours. So Straight Diva Fall Off Okay? No. We get done for stamp duty. and then join the reform party in a last ditch for approval. Anyone who mentions skinny jeans being in or out of fashion is elevated to the sky in a rapture-like fashion and is sent to hell. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're allowed to throw tomatoes at them. London Fields gets nuked and we get world peace. Yeah. Fingers crossed. Right and that's Should we do an agony on And then I really do have to go Yes please

58Are you ready? We don't have to do an agony on No no we've got 10 minutes Okay 26 I've fallen in love with someone who's poly And I don't know how to stop Get out and be okay Okay Baby stand up baby That's peak That is peaky blinders

22you're never going to win that is like being like I've fallen in love with a tiger that wants to bite my head off like you're never going to win if you're not poly you can't get with poly I think I am more simpatico to the poly person like who's to say who's to say they might never change is that a bad expectation to have but I think that's a bad expectation to go and expecting somebody to change Like if I say I'm poly you shouldn't be like But I'm going to get with you and hope that you're not I just told you that I am Do you know what I mean You shouldn't expect someone to change no matter what it is Not just you know polyamory or monogamy Yeah Loving someone or expecting someone to change Loving someone Girl you should be loving someone Oh fuck

14I don't really know what to say Not don't do it But it's already happened No no you know what you have to do You have to just put your fucking dick on the table And go like well I love you It's me or everyone else It's me or everyone else And then I love you

36Talk about being a hashtag problem Is that your girl? It's not my girl I love you I swear that's your girl Yeah Would you prefer the Dizzy Rascal one Or the Stormzy one Dizzy Rascal Yeah Don't be laughed

52The only way you're going to get over this Is if you play your hand And then they say No sorry And then Which will be likely Because they're poly And they've told you that Yeah Because realistically there You actually haven't respected them Yeah This is a you problem But like No no offense but like I'm sorry that you've done that and I'm sorry that you're hurting but like if someone says I am this and then you're going to expect them to not be it's like you've not respected yourself but you've also not respected them it's like that's like going out with a celibate person and hoping that one day they'll turn around and want to fuck that's crazy but instead you've done that to the opposite of like somebody who has multiple partners and been like but I hope that I can be like the top partner or like in hopes that they'll stop having these partners that's not fair like that's how yeah do you know what i mean not like i'm sorry that like going out with a dj and expecting them to like not have a cat yeah or like have like security my ex-boyfriend's wild and apparently or respect oh okay i just got loads of tea yesterday we're obviously not gonna talk about that but like do you know when you find out that someone's like not changed you're like oh thank god like i win winning um we haven't suggested that maybe they try being poly as well.

05Yeah. Sensing from the question that you probably don't want to be. The fact you're trying to change poly people. Do poly people fall in love? Yeah. Yeah? Yeah, there are multiple loves. Yeah. Really? And you've watched it straight, do you? Okay, should we end it there? Yeah, I love you. Okay, yeah, you're going to be okay. You just have to play your hand. It's all about playing your hand.
