In short

The hosts trade stories about drinking too much and feeling “fragile,” then pivot to music culture: free/creative live shows in unexpected London venues, social media’s effect on music relevance, and music journalism (especially the need for honest criticism). They also review Olivia Rodrigo’s new album, debate specific lyrics, and discuss a UK policy banning social media for under-16s. The episode ends with a playful “England World Cup squad top or bottom” segment.

Guests

No named guests appear in the transcript; it’s a two-host conversation (Stray Diver). One host mentions interviewing a band the day before, but the band isn’t clearly identified by name in the transcript.

Key claims

  1. Drinking is becoming a problem mainly via negative effects, not necessarily dependence.
  2. Live music and good music should drive relevance more than TikTok/PR.
  3. Music journalism should return to genuine, non-ragebait criticism.
  4. Olivia Rodrigo’s album is strong, with standout ballads and a notable Robert Smith feature.

Notable examples

  • A free gig in a disused Marble Arch Tube exit with a dramatic frontman (band name unclear).
  • Tyler, the Creator’s UK ban/unban story tied to Peckham/Bussy Building.
  • Olivia Rodrigo: “What’s Wrong With Me?” and the Robert Smith collaboration; lyric about “blunts in the bathroom” sparks debate.
  • Social media ban for under-16s (Keir Starmer mentioned).

0:57O-Rod:Hey, welcome to Stray Diver, the show where we talk about our favorite things and you listen.

1:03David Platt:Pop culture, wanks, pop culture, wanks and sob stories from our very own listeners. Listen, how are you all doing this blessed June day? Mid-June, this year's flying by. How was your Juneteenth? It's not been Juneteenth, has it? I assumed it was Juneteenth I assumed June 13th was Juneteenth Oh, I don't know I don't know what Juneteenth is Is it like an American thing? It's an American thing I have no idea then How was your weekend?

1:36O-Rod:Yeah, really nice, wholesome I've got to quit drinking now, girls Yeah? It's hit the point It's hit the point

1:43David Platt:You've had a good stint for a bit

1:45O-Rod:Yeah, I've had a good old go But I Do you know when you send it And then you're like oh I'm not being I didn't represent myself in a way I'd like to represent myself you didn't you you didn't come in soggy biscuit yeah basically I just kept going it's like being on G no um I was only meant to have one ended up having like five it was the day before the studio so I kind of turned up to studio a bit groggy my voice was a bit groggy um I annoyed my partner which is obviously not fun and I apologise to these flowers but maybe it was his fault it wasn't his fault which is yeah

2:26David Platt:I'm kind of feeling

2:27O-Rod:and we're okay immediately he was like it's literally fine but

2:30David Platt:I kind of feel in a similar place to be honest yeah I just feel like it's scary because it's June and yeah

2:37O-Rod:and it's World Cup we're all about to send it yeah but ultimately there's not a bigger sign telling me I need to stop for a bit right Because ultimately, I think all of us are, especially young London, young England, we drink so much. I do drink so much. And I don't mean like, I never have a drink on my own, but I go to the pub and I'll easily down four drinks at least. I mean, four pints to me just gets me, I'm such a lightweight as well. By the end of it, I'm like, I am gattered. I actually can't remember, I can't remember really leaving the pub the other night. I was just gone. I was meant to stay for one.

3:16O-Rod:And then I had one. then I made it two then I made it three and then from there people like do you want to drink I just

3:19David Platt:said yes like yeah I remember one of the first parties we went to you had three drinks and you

3:24O-Rod:could barely walk yeah I know it's bad I know it's really bad that's what I mean so like I need to like especially if I have like a minimal dinner like it's even worse so do you say what do you

3:35David Platt:say when someone asked me recently what's your like what's your relationship like with drinking

3:42O-Rod:and I like I didn't really know where to start when I say to the doctor I'm like look I have more than multiple drinks like i know i'm over the limit of what you think is headspace drinking and i think we all basically are like because i mean everyone that i i mean i like go to the pub like especially in like have some like three four times a week because we set high standards in this country when your local pub know you by name yeah there's an issue and we do and we have such a key i love my local but and i wouldn't have it any other way yeah no but like ultimately too like there does come with something with that way like i yeah i'm drinking too much and i came home and i was like i'm a drunk like i do know like and it's not like i'm a drunk i can't stop being drunk it's just more like i definitely yeah i just sent it a bit too much so it's probably just time to stop

4:25David Platt:for a bit yeah it's not like it's not like you're dependent on alcohol it's like it's it's more the

4:30O-Rod:effects the negative it's more like i'm out every day and like my life is events and my life is going out and being social and if it's not something for work it's like oh this person's town because i know them from this job i did or bill did or like you did or whatever like someone will be like oh you must meet this person so you'll go and you'll have a few drinks and like god i've been drunk especially from like primavera like hungry i was drunk every night because it was like we're meeting different people doing different things and i come back and i go to primavera i'm drunk every night and i come back to london i'm like kind of technically

4:59David Platt:drunk every night how do you get good at meeting people without alcohol well you do and i'm so

5:05O-Rod:good at it i've like especially throughout my early 20s like i i've gone like years without

5:10David Platt:drinking like i got like fully sober you're fucking autistic as fuck i know i can do it like i know i can and this time i know that i don't want to i i i don't want to be like i'm

5:21O-Rod:going to go sober for a year that's not what i'm trying to do at the minute but i like i just need to take a step back from soggy biscuit yeah basically just just i'm not yeah being drunk for a bit let my voice get better like i had that really bad like i think got post-nazal drip from my really bad congestion that i had like a couple weeks ago my voice still isn't there you got post nasal drip yeah yeah um but no but it's yeah so you i'm not letting my voice heal i'm also 27 like i'm not 18 i don't bounce back from drink because like it just doesn't help like i might

5:51David Platt:want to do it so i'll stop for a few weeks but what are you going to be doing instead i i was at the pub yesterday but i had zeros oh good for you like lemonades and it's nice because

6:01O-Rod:then you get to like 9 p.m and you're like god this is late and you go home like instead of wait

6:06David Platt:staying around till 11 p.m smoking yeah and then you're at the end of a night like do you want to put a label on how long this period is going to last or is it because it's going to be more of a

6:15O-Rod:feeling yeah more of a feeling also i'm going to hold a light in august i've got the show on july 16th which sold out um but it's just like you like i'll probably have a drink then because i enjoy drinking that's the thing but it's just like it's funny because once you say like it's not i'm saying i have a problem it's just i need to stop drinking but now it sounds like i've got a problem

6:33David Platt:no it doesn't it's more like it's uh it's not an admission of like you have an alcohol issue well maybe maybe we do have an alcohol issue but it's not like it's it's almost like reminds me of when people talk about vegans like yeah oh if you're you know if you don't eat this like you shouldn't be buying this or you shouldn't be doing this it's like just because you do one thing that's good and like improving your life doesn't mean you have to hold yourself to a higher standard than everything else yeah yeah and like just because you're just because you want to stop drinking for like a couple of weeks or whatever how long doesn't mean that it's like oh my god i have a drinking problem like my life is in tatters like i'm a fuck up like

7:18O-Rod:it's like if anything my life's like actually exactly the place i want it to be right now it's just like i'm just i've just taken your foot off the gas yeah i've just been a bit drunk at the minute i just don't want to be drunk at the minute yeah and you are a bit fucking you smell yeah you stink yeah you haven't showered in ages how are you how was your weekend

7:33David Platt:good similar i'm feeling a bit fragile myself to be honest feeling kind of in the same uh zone uh did quite a lot of drinking uh had had some pretty demonic sleep last night as a result yeah like one of the worst had had sleep paralysis and i woke i was like i could i fall asleep to a podcast yeah woke up straight to you yeah i fall asleep to a basketball podcast oh my god go next go nick go nick go nick i love the next um and i i'd fallen asleep and then i i was on my back which is never good for my sleep paralysis missionary tease missionary can we do missionary again

8:16O-Rod:my new ep can we do missionary again sometimes it's the best sometimes it's the best sometimes

8:23David Platt:Kissy ones I love it Eye contact Sue me I don't want to be detached From you like a dog

8:29O-Rod:Sue me I wanna be wanted Audrey Hobart Trans people exist And that's okay Really don't know My Audrey Hobart That's it I met you at the party Drinking a jam in the party That's how every Audrey Hobart And Grace Abrams Sounds to me

8:50O-Rod:Words words i'm singing in the karaoke bar you look like a star going in the fast car la la la la that's what it is or it's like sad version where it's like i'm upset i'm sad i'm upset you're a fucking ugly skirt and i miss you my friend gotta think i lie but i think i lost it but they can't breathe after it yeah Gracie Abins in mascara bra

9:17David Platt:Gracie Abins does have that sort of Diana Vickers vocal fry But good for her Which also Elie Rodrigo has But which we will obviously be getting onto

9:27O-Rod:But somehow she pulls it off That song is possibly one of the best songs to come out this year It's a phenomenal song And his voice is so good on it It's amazing I feel like it's maybe Grammy worthy And he's 95 Yeah That's so nice went to the doctor and he said I was fine it's so good I got trapped in sleep paralysis and I

9:54David Platt:could hear the podcast going but I was still locked in for like 20 seconds and it was Timothy Chalamet at the end of the event yeah it was Timothy Chalamet just going like let's go baby

10:04O-Rod:Let's go, Nix. Let's go, Nix.

10:07David Platt:And then I had a bad dream where a jock from my school was trying to get with the girl I'm seeing at the moment. And then I...

10:16O-Rod:Oh, so you're not single, this Pride Mind?

10:20David Platt:We're sort of in an in-between stage.

Read the full transcript

10:23O-Rod:Scene's fun, isn't it? That's so nice.

10:25David Platt:Not like you where I can just lock it off in two days. In two days. Yeah. But yeah, I really slept badly tonight. So apologies if I'm a little bit cuckoo today Cuckoo banana But I'm good, I'm good too I had a fun, crazy weekend I went to a really fun I went to a really fun gig And I want to talk about it because It was in a disused tube exit of Marble Arch Tube station Right on the corner of Hyde Park And it was like in this big pit and it was obviously a bit crazy. I don't know if anyone thought my stories. It was a 65-inch nail gun. It was, yeah, it was 65-inch pussy plower nail gun, pussy destroyer, Yahweh nail gun.

11:15David Platt:And they were great. They were amazing. And I interviewed them yesterday. And everyone keep your eyes out for that on a certain magazine platform that I do work with. But the reason I wanted to talk about it is because I was like, this is so great because one, it was free. and two, it was like an interesting gig in an unexpected location that wasn't like - It did look fun. Let's do a rave in a chip shop or let's do a rave in an off license basically for TikTok. And that leads singer. Oh my God. So lang. Such a - I haven't seen anyone do a front man like him. He basically does like this campan and goes like - Like sobbing almost.

11:56O-Rod:Is that the guy from Scary Movie that says, grab my good hand? and make some mashed potatoes.

13:02David Platt:Anyway, and then at the end of every song he does a sort of like Marcus Aurelius gladiator are you not entertained thing just like imperious. Anyway.

13:11O-Rod:It was very like all the cool people on my Instagram with it.

13:14David Platt:It was a very pitchfork NTS mosh bit.

13:16O-Rod:It was an ADC 11 PR event.

13:18David Platt:Yeah, it was a very don't touch my beanie in the mosh. yeah yeah yeah that one video the girl oh my god that poor girl she messaged me oh bless her uh

13:28O-Rod:she's okay okay i'm glad you're all right that's so funny um but no free gigs in interesting places that are good never happen in london and i feel like it's coming back i think that's going to be

13:39David Platt:the new way to like really get people involved and like i don't know if it's i i i don't know anything about the topic i don't know if it's because all our councils are really boring or if it's because people just aren't being creative or because we have so many good places to just have normal shows.

13:54O-Rod:I think bring back like 90s club kid tees where they just don't ask and just do it. Bring a sound system and make it quick and obviously you've got a big crowd there.

14:01David Platt:Where would you have a sort of an outdoors or like, I was interviewing them yesterday and they said they want to do a show in an active prison. And that's actually like a fee. Sorry, that is so like. But I didn't even know that was a thing. but like not a thing is it no but prisons have uh music performances for their i mean this might be in america and not in the uk but like elvis did it fuck why can't we because they're not

14:28O-Rod:sheryl cole going to see the armed forces for red nose day okay would you do yeah would you do a show

14:34David Platt:an raf base yeah a throat show you do a show for the tradies oh honey a scaffolding show that would cool oh my sister working staff scaffolding what millie yeah mate she's got that car out of scaffolding just quantity surveyor babe um it's funny because my younger sisters are so much more successful than i different forms of success yeah a party i was at the weekend that everyone's like oh you seem to be doing well i was like yeah i'm doing i feel like things are going well but like i don't earn any money and they're like yeah but you know you're you're on the right path and i was thanks i needed that but i feel like our version of success is maybe you know we get um we get

15:13O-Rod:people coming up to say like i have a parasocial relationship with you i my thing is i and i say this to everyone that i meet at the minute like whoever's in the industry love love the people that are saying that by the way love you but ultimately i think that um everyone's like there's no money in the creative industry at the minute whether it's just this year or whether they've like you know there doesn't seem to be money moves around and you need to find the places who have it but at the minute the goalposts are changing gigs are free in rob larch do you know i mean like you say i think that's where the world's going where it's more community and actually money will come in different forms i think we're about to see a big shift again i think people are shifting from social media and tiktoker yeah for sure and such and so forth so i think we're going to see a big shift on who's relevant and why they're relevant um because i do think i think everyone is just a bit sick of seeing like influencers trying like uh privatize something and make you feel like you

16:14David Platt:can't have it because you absolutely can't have it and the like i feel like even really casual music fans are very aware of when something is for like the look or tiktok and when it's for like yeah and i feel like yeah very even casual music fans are very yeah they're craving just like

16:35O-Rod:live music really just like artistry what a band is yeah they put out music and play i was saying this to nick the other day and i was talking about ear for example ear put out music that works for people put out shit loads of it and they just play all the time yeah that's it i think that's where things go about it's not rocket science they're not out here like for tiktok doing like tiktok dances like they're just doing good music that's like impressing people they look cool you're interested in them and they make good music like it actually turns out that maybe at the basis of all these pr campaigns maybe the the ones that have done best actually just good music

17:10David Platt:yeah i mean i feel that a lot in my area of work of social media for musicians i'm like i don't want to say to people i work with that like yeah maybe it's maybe it's just the music

17:23O-Rod:because that's the thing like there's been many people like especially back in my like earlier tiktok days when i used to get views but like when i used to like you know really like it was like my daily mission when i was posting every day for a year making like loads of views getting millions views whatever when that was happening you get paid by like record labels like post music and you do it but like and you have to take the check because i need to live but ultimately like the music was shit at the base you know these people are forgettable they're like whatever and It's just like, that's, is what it is.

17:53O-Rod:There's no like striving for better. It's like, okay, a PR campaign will save me. And I actually think these days it won't. Like the people that are popping through in the industry are actually musically talented. And they have really good - Don't get me wrong. They get PR campaigns to them, but the bass note, they're out fucking playing, they're out putting out good songs and they're inundating people with music. I think that's the only way musicians can be.

18:14David Platt:Yeah. And, but also they have really good branding, which like, I feel like people associate with PR, but it is like a is an artist i think it's a very simple thing like i think with ear like their

18:24O-Rod:branding is so fucking simple just the headbanging yeah headbanging bright lights flashing yeah and then they're like and even just like the images it's just like a photo of a smashed glass like

18:33David Platt:it's just like yeah it's it is when is that aesthetic gonna it never goes though i was

18:38O-Rod:doing that like 10 years ago the toilet aesthetic just zooming into an image yeah yeah just pixelated so like people think it's cool and rock on you know what i mean and like wear a ballet flat

18:49David Platt:because it's relatable because it's a relatable content honey but if you were going to do an outdoor show yeah where would I do it

18:58O-Rod:oh god I mean I'd play I'd play fucking anywhere to be fair oh my god what a question I'd love to do one like just like throw up in a field like London field Bermondsey Beach lol that's funny go back to your roots go back to my roots go back to Bermondsey I could do one on Barnes Pond Yeah Deathford High Street Just shut down That would get shut down Well do you remember when Tyler the Crater got unbanned from the UK I remember because I was in Camberwell I was at James's house in Camberwell We were all sat around And he tweeted Show at Peckham Oh yeah Peckham Rye Was that post Yes he got unbanned From the UK So he was in the UK And then he said At Busy Building There's going to be a show And he shut down Peckham And then

19:44David Platt:Sorry and then he got banned again

19:45O-Rod:or is this post i don't know like it was when teresa may was out so he was right okay and then he did bussy building said i'm gonna be a bussy building this time everyone i mean james and sam at the time hopped up and left like they were like we've got to be there and i love tyler but like i'm not like i'm not gonna run around peckham with a bunch of scare boys anyway they shut the whole thing down he had to cancel the gig because you couldn't move in peckham like police were involved like the whole bit of peckham ryan was just full of fans like i think that's what it's Actually like wanting to see people And do things you know

20:17David Platt:And living life And in speaking of Musicians doing sort of Real musicianship Someone you saw live last week Only Olivia Rodrigo Has released a new album And I would love To hear your thoughts You're pretty sad for a girl so in love

20:39O-Rod:My thoughts are I like it I love Olivia Rodrigo I think she's so talented. I love the singles. I think, What's Wrong With Me? What's it called? What's Wrong With Me?

20:51David Platt:I think, What's Wrong With Me?

20:52O-Rod:Yeah, yeah. It's amazing. I think that's such a beautiful song. I think it's so good. And The Cure. And also, I love Drop Dead now. Some of the other songs are great. I actually wish she'd lean into more what the singles were. And I feel like she was almost, I'm not saying she was ripped, but she was very, I think, influenced by The Cure. But then I think there are certain songs that aren't. and like they those songs stick out like sore thumbs in my opinion where i was like i actually

21:16David Platt:think that if she almost went out this one like the more ballady yeah and like i think if she like

21:21O-Rod:went more like mono with it all and like more like very specific that sound like there's one like a drum machine where i'm like this is this is cool like this is cool direction and then i think some were like almost reminiscent of like could have easily been on the first album in my opinion and so it's a great album and i enjoy it ballady ones you mean yeah and i'm just kind of like i don't know maybe it would be cool to just like and one thing i will say there's a lyric uh my friend's smoking blunts in the bathroom yeah no one smokes a blunt in the bathroom you're gonna get a cigarette you're gonna get a line if someone's smoking weed in the bathroom you'd be like freak i i was saying this will in the car and i love livry rodrigo and please livry rodrigo forgive me if you ever hear this but like lean into just like not being disney say sniffing lines yeah it was the same with all american bitch oh you're going that way yeah like perfect all american hips yeah that was that was it's babe just say tits like i know like just say it like be like i i think did she not say tits she says hips oh perfect all american here and she did say bitch though yeah okay but like i just think it's like no one smokes blunts in the bathroom like blunts was like a half i mean maybe people disagree but i think it's just like full fist it like do you know i mean go baddie go miley do it like i'm just like yeah people don't smoke bronze or it's like a cigs or or lean into the fact that you're a disney girl and yeah and

22:42David Platt:you don't want to do it and nobody expects you to be doing this thing for sure and i also it

22:45O-Rod:literally doesn't matter why weed is no man's land yeah we yeah it's just like who's holding up a line to smoke a blunt in the bathroom just go on the balcony like weed's fine like well and that was sniff lines do you coke like i don't know is that boring is that boring like i just it's just like my friends are sniffing lines in the bathroom that's funny also like and also it's

23:06David Platt:like very like fuck disney but maybe they aren't she's quite yeah she is a disney girl and she

23:10O-Rod:seems still relatively well put together to sniff coke but it was my main takeaway from the album

23:18David Platt:was like uh really liked it but um how does she get away with lines like that and like like for the same reason i don't like someone like gracie abrams or something yeah yeah like like the sort of the vocal fry and like some lyrics that are, I don't know, like slightly cringy, I would say, but like for some reason with her, it works. It works.

23:46O-Rod:But then I'm like, maybe actually it works because maybe we've just seen the worst of the world. Like I'm like, just say Coke. And I'm like, maybe it's not normal that your friends do Coke in the bathroom. Do you know what I mean? Like, and then I'm like, am I the issue? am I just like living in fucking like um what's that Scottish film with the dead baby oh train spot train spot am I just like living in an episode of train spot do you know I mean maybe I've just moved to London and seen the worst sides of like what people can be and everyone cheering out and yeah whatever and actually she's and actually she's just like in a nice friendship group like who like the riskiest thing they do is smoke weed and that's great yeah yeah do you know I mean like maybe all these cringy lyrics are cringy to us because we've seen like the worst do you know what i mean like yeah i'm struggling to remember specific lyrics i'm thinking

24:35David Platt:of but like i guess they're kind of part of the world she is very influenced by which is like pop punk to me yeah like just like or it is it can be quite middle of the road sometimes like especially with the ballads the ballads the ballads yeah um can i have a chicken season a ballad please although i do think one of the ballads was incredible which one uh less it's it's the one after what's wrong with me okay and it's like um i wish i wish i wish i loved you less it almost sounds like a song from like a musical um which i would usually

25:16O-Rod:there's another song she did live as well um oh what's the one i can't remember how it goes

25:22David Platt:This one's a banger as well.

25:25O-Rod:Pause it. We'll get banned. What's the one? It's like a... It's like purple or like... Or begged. What's begged sound like?

25:36O-Rod:That's an amazing song. Begged is an amazing... And it's like... Yeah, it's amazing. Yeah, that's an amazing song. It's actually a really good album And I like the, I think you seem so sad for her personal love. I think she explained that perfectly. Like she falls in love with someone. It's a beautiful story. Falls in love with someone. And then eventually she's like, you've not fixed what I thought that this was going to fix. And so I need to leave. I think it's beautiful. So I do really like the album. It's just like, I think sometimes I'm just like, but maybe, yeah, like I said,

26:12David Platt:maybe I'm just a bit extreme. Isn't you're saying lyrically or like what you've said about it before in terms of being like the same producer?

26:20O-Rod:I think this is the most mature thing she's done This is my favourite album of hers It almost reminds me, though it's not very similar Of Billie Eilish, Hit Me Hard and Soft Because I think that is Billie's best album, but it's like a third one Or fourth one Where I think it's like This sounds like you, this sounds like Liv Rodrigo Distilled At her very best But I hope that the next album is like Completely different And a bit more experimental

26:48David Platt:Yeah, for sure, it would be nice to see her It is a beautiful storytelling adventure. And it was so cool how she's bringing out Robert Smith.

26:56O-Rod:And that is, she must imagine him like getting the confirmation that he was going to do the verse.

27:01David Platt:Yeah. And it's probably one of the best songs of the year. Yeah, I think that's the best song on the album. And I hope it wins a Grammy for vocal performance or like duet or something. It's so cute seeing this old, older like pop star. And there's just no element of creepiness because Robert Smith is so lovely. Yeah. and i don't know why and another inexplicable thing is like why is robert smith's voice so

27:25O-Rod:great so amazing and also what i like about it is like she doesn't do features he doesn't do features and they're like yeah this calls for a future work do you know what i mean it's almost like kylie when she did nick cave because it's also like why is this happening really this it's happening yeah that song wasn't for me but like it's yeah it's like a very nice choice well it's

27:45David Platt:because also even though like the cure i mean they released an album this year and it got like very well reviewed they're like they're not like yeah they're not trending it's not like the hypey they're legends yeah do you know i mean um so well done olivia rodrigo um chat let us know what you thought yeah please let us know what else we should be listening to if we shouldn't be listening to uh the most mainstream of pop if you like it you like it if you love it you love it also um see anthony fantano with jane remover yeah did you see anthony fantano with detour

28:16O-Rod:he was like it's just not cohesive and i was like it is so cohesive you're actually a prick i actually do think sometimes he is so wrong i'm increasingly like the vroom vroom ep that he went back and re-reviewed because he was at a really fucked up and i was like yeah you actually don't get things and when he did the fiona apple album which was literally about like the talking about the worst type type of men and he was like it just isn't silently good i'm like and you've just proved the point like pitchfork giving it a 10 out of 10 and anthony being like i'm gonna give of a three it's like you're actually wanked back you're not listening to it i i felt recently that

28:50David Platt:he's just like too he's too similar to pitchfork in that like in a way i don't think he used to be like i feel like he used to have this summer serve up the cookout classics oscar meyer hot dogs and

29:06O-Rod:heinz mustard grill up a dog add classic yellow mustard or loaded chicago style we all know it's not a cookout without Oscar Meyer and Hines.

29:18David Platt:When you finally find your thing, you want the whole world to know about that thing. So you use a thing called Canva to make it an even bigger and better thing. Whether you want to create flyers for that thing, make presentations for that thing, or design merch for that thing, you can do anything. So people can see your thing, feel your thing, love your thing. The next thing you know, it's a thing. canva the thing that makes anything a thing yeah a nice thing to say not well nice things to say but also like he just didn't like i feel like he's too just like industry darling his taste too well aligns with what is cool yeah i want more i actually don't think it is because when

30:02O-Rod:he was talking about detour yeah he was saying it's very reminiscent of like 2012 so is that this is nothing new and i'm like no that is the point like it's we're now living in this world where like you know like indie sleaze and like i mean slate is now kind of like ipop it's like now the thing yeah but i think that is happening because things move quicker it's not like people bring back 80s music it's like indies i remember when indices was coming out when i was growing up do you know what i mean like crystal castles were kind of going like boom like i remember this happening and it's already back and it's only been like what 10 20 years yeah do you know what i mean and so it's like i think the cycles are just shorter and so i don't think he gets that because he's like it feels it's not cool enough to come back but i'm like bitch it's already back do you know what i mean yeah yeah i don't really know what i'm saying but it is still

30:50David Platt:i don't know would you say the kim petrus album is fresh or would you yes i think it's fresh in what makes it different it's their take

30:59O-Rod:on the music from like 2012 like i think it's like taking 303 it's taking like die young by kesha it's taking like i agree yeah it's taking example like i think there's so many bits that example could have hopped on like kickstarts it's taking all that type of music redoing it in a bitchy cunty way that's like more modern because it's like compared to saying maximalist

31:21David Platt:it's more like the production is probably better as well it's like more impressive and so it's like yeah exactly a bit more like like for whatever hype is or like 100 gex it's like it's also incorporating some of that like weirdness which i say for sure a lot of the music that it's being accused of or said to reference lacked it's a bit more quavy yeah which i'm which i'm like that's surely what one hopes for but i think sometimes he hits the mark i think not sorry

31:53O-Rod:i think now times where he does a review and i'm like yeah fuck it lol that's funny but i think this time yeah i think the important things he misses i think actually detour might be something that he comes back to later but i don't know whether it's going to make as much as a

32:06David Platt:scratch as like vroom vroom ep because that changed everything what's your general stance on uh music

32:13O-Rod:journalism i think it needs to come back and he's come back hard i feel like is that shard magazine he's really cool because fan of the pod yeah i followed him the other day he's fan of i kiss bill he bought an i kiss bullshit did he yeah shout out but he uh is a legend and i think what he's doing is really cool unnecessary because not only is it just like notes are odd calls which is so easy to digest but also like i think he speaks honestly on things and i think he even if he likes something is i didn't like this and i think we need that more i think if anything there's never been more of a time for pitchfork to be original pitchfork than now like i think it's like we actually do need people to be like guys this was shit yeah and like we do need to bring it back i don't think it necessarily needs to come back like things like restaurants and stuff or like a restaurant's career could get defined by one person review i understand yeah but i do think we do need like honest music criticism and actually to be like guys a bit lackluster and i think it's come it's coming full circle because i think from artists like taylor swift dropping like some really shit albums and even their fans being like yeah do you know what i mean or like when nikki menage and obviously canceled but when she re-released or like pink friday too she's like this is the best thing i've ever done she released it like half bakes and everyone was like this isn't that good like obviously it streams because it's saying and everyone's like it's like it's okay but it wasn't that good and i think that's why we need music journalism to hold

33:39David Platt:people to that to be like yo like yeah for sure shit yeah you know what i mean and the good thing about uh shard uh is that he'll do criticism but like i feel like a lot of when publications try to do like super critical stuff they'll make it like rage baity which is obviously like you know the nature of how social media works but like uh not to uh dog them out because i'm a huge fan of resident advisor but they they did like a thing recently where it was like what are the it are the few things recently but one was like what are the what are the trends of the 2020s what the musical trends of the 2020s and like you could tell that like the first things they put in the part it was like a carousel classic carousel sort of journalism piece the things they put at the top are the just the most like cynical rage-baity things the things that actually transpire in the article are much more positive yeah and i feel like the good thing about shard is that i don't know if it's just because the way he's doing it or presenting it is it's just like just notes app is that like and it's just text there's no hook or anything but like it feels like genuine criticism and not criticism for the sake of just

34:56O-Rod:hooking people in to just get them but i don't know like and i i don't know what the

35:04David Platt:because you wouldn't expect you wouldn't have called that to be cool like just a text post and obviously like i don't know if that's the future but like pitchfork and everyone else they either do a picture yeah and it's like go and click on the article or it's like here's like half an article like among 10 slides and then i also think i think a lot of things with like

35:28O-Rod:resident advice and such such like that if someone gets something gets enough hype anyway they'll kind of like say nicer things to it and i actually think bring back being like everyone loves this i think it's shit like and i think that is like kind of almost like and i'm not like tooting our own horns here but i think we are quite good at that and i think that's why a lot of people get annoyed at us being like you know why are you hating this thing that collectively everyone loves and i'm like i think we honestly for individuality and people i think people need to do that like you do need an opinion on things and i think that's really important i think when me and bill got together we spoke a lot about this because he really thinks people need an opinion like what do you prefer and it's i don't mind and he's like you can't live your life just saying you don't mind even if you don't mind i don't care it's almost like decide choose like make yourself valuable to that situation and make yourself and make your brain think what would you prefer allow yourself to allow yourself to have an opinion like force yourself to do that i think that is really important but that yeah that's why i'm really such a fan of like shard and such so forth i actually i remember doing a piece for somebody years ago i was assisting whatever the fuck it was like successful singer at the time and we took her to a magazine and this magazine was i'm not going to name who it was or the magazine but at the time this magazine was like we're not going to take this because we just don't like her and i remember being so annoyed because she was really successful at the time and i remember being like oh my god that's so fucking annoying you fucking idiots but i actually really rate it and respect so who's we we're not

36:48David Platt:going to take i'm not going to say who we was but like a sorry a publication or a man me someone

36:53O-Rod:did a shoot for somebody hello okay it just died a little bit that's so strange but um so yeah sorry it cut off at the end but basically we took this magazine this magazine were basically like you we just don't like this person that you shot and like at the time i was really really annoyed and it feels like your second year life is ending because like i was trying to get my foot in the door and i was like why is this magazine not taking this very like very iconic person at the time but i'm really glad that they didn't actually because they had an opinion they had an opinion and it wasn't an opinion like we're going to put this out and dog it it was instead just like we're not even going to take it because we don't like it yeah which i really actually do right yeah but it's interesting because i feel like there was a bit and i feel like some a lot of people

37:36David Platt:still feel like it is that like music criticism is sort of dead and it's like people for a second were like yeah why would you it felt very uncool to to criticize music online um and just like generally yeah be critical of anything online if like yeah just if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all and i feel like we've slightly moved past that now i even think though that that slipped into like and i don't want to make this political but i think it's it's slept

38:15O-Rod:in it slipped into leftist minds where we're told if you've got nothing nice to say don't say it so we don't whereas actually most people who are rightly named are taught fucking tell him that it's wrong so like for example someone did a post apparently on facebook someone like screenshot upon an instagram story the other day and it was like this like post it was something about this person doesn't believe in gay rights and the comments were like good like good good good but it's like i know more people believe in gay rights than don't believe in gay rights but the people who don't are fucking squawking online and we've been taught not to say oh or like you know get on with don't pay them no mind bitch pay the mind say your opinion stand up for people like and i'm not saying that you need to go out here and every day post translate matter like i'm not saying that and it's not just about like pride or whatever but it's about everything like race and there's this fucking like race why it's going on in the uk right now like we need to just speak out and like even when you're in the conversation but like yeah it's fucked these people are fucking weirdos doing that fucking uneducated dickheads and there was like a case study on all these people that are getting arrested around there and they all they all have been done for domestic abuse previously like they're just awful men that like protect our women but they're not protecting the women they're beating all these like fucking women up

39:22David Platt:where are the race rights in the UK

39:25O-Rod:yeah there's like a couple race rights have you not seen them

39:27David Platt:no

39:28O-Rod:are they in the UK there's like race rights

39:30David Platt:the Straight Diva podcast live

39:51David Platt:oh my god oh my god glenn gormley on the northern edge oh the shit happening in belfast yes i did see this damn

40:10David Platt:um so there's one yeah it's crazy but it's interesting i agree with you i feel like it's less part of leftist politics now but yeah for a time it was too

40:26O-Rod:i think you get told to rise above whereas actually now like rising above's not going to work babe because rising above you might be rising above with somebody who's on the fence anyway and then missing is going to hear this that and a third from becky down the road who thinks trans people are men in wigs and then they're gonna be like yeah becky's probably right because you've not said shit like i think we just need to use no voices and i'm but that's not me being like everyone's got to make videos i'm just saying like i think we need all a shift yeah even then that goes towards like music criticism music journalism and i think we've lost our opinion you are more infighting on the left no we don't that's that's already happened yeah she's a brick like shut up that fucking idiot I'm still recording on Logic I'm worried I'm worried so guys what have you been doing this week for audio listeners Sophie is sat on my coochie

41:16David Platt:guys if you're not following already make sure to hit follow and subscribe and if you're not

41:20O-Rod:on Patreon you're only getting half

41:22David Platt:of the story and leave a comment on the YouTube and the Spotify because it really makes a big difference what did we speak about on our Patreon episode last week.

41:34O-Rod:Last week we spoke about music production, which is quite fierce. So if you are a fellow music producer, why don't you hit it up and have a listen? And if you're not and you're interested in starting that, maybe you should do that.

41:43David Platt:We went deep. We had a great question from our patron, Luke, who submitted the topic through our WhatsApp chat. Shout out to Luke. Always bringing the heat. And we discussed influences, production flares that we like, production X kind of it was one for the heads but I think like head I think just a music fan would like it and if you just like us if you like listening to our voices maybe it was nice to do one where there wasn't any pressure to be yeah silly yeah and speaking of which yeah we're gonna do

42:23O-Rod:England World Cup squad top or bottom top or bottom can you just go on to logic just to make sure that we're still recording there because I do worry England squad Top or bottom What else do you worry about? Not really much at the minute I'm on ADHD meds So I don't really feel much But it turns out That a lot of my mood Was affected by ADHD Because I have started Feeling much better Really? Yeah like even just like Feeling okay Really?

42:46David Platt:So it's not like a Just a focus It's not just a focus thing I think it's like focus But it's also like It's mood

42:52O-Rod:Yeah and you're able to like Focus on what makes you feel good

42:55David Platt:Can I try one? Yeah they're over there Sorry is that bad? No Neurospark Is that bad?

That's the most bottom one. Have we had many bottoms yet? Not that we need to... We've had loads of boxes. We're not trying.

45:25O-Rod:I feel like we've barely got any more talks.

45:27David Platt:We don't need to fill any quotas or anything.

45:29O-Rod:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Guys, this is allegedly.

45:31David Platt:The England World Cup squad, if you're watching this, both are good. Yeah. Sorry, all three are good. Yeah. Versus probably the best. The best, I think. Kobe Maynou. Versus. Jordan Henderson, my favourite.

45:45O-Rod:Ooh, I don't know. You can answer this one.

45:47David Platt:Okay, Jordan Henderson. He, well, so Jordan Henderson has got a lot of accusations from media members that like he shouldn't be there because he's not like he's quite old now okay he's passed his best but he is there basically because he's a great leader and he is a great captain and everyone says he's really funny but he's basically the vibes guy okay top yeah i think i agree eberichi eze sorry they espn.co.uk it's ebery as a now dead naming as a You prick And this Morgan Rogers Oh bottom He's from Brum Yeah bottom for sure Bukayo Saka

47:16David Platt:That concludes our World Cup top or bottom Guys, if you can think of any ways to make the World Cup interesting.

47:23O-Rod:Then we'll be all ears. Then we'll be all ears. I'm going for a pint of zero and a curry tomorrow to watch the Cup. Oh. On Harry's. Also, can I just say, and I hope if there are any people in music that listen to this, that like are in booking and stuff, or brands or whatever, if any, is any brand sending, like, I'm sorry to beg it, but if anyone is sending people to Hayley Williams, I will do anything for that ticket. I've just got sent another code to try and get pre-sale tomorrow but if anyone is working at the roundhouse and can get me and my boyfriend into Hayley Williams it genuinely is like make a wish at this point I'm sure that can happen yeah please what labour is she on?

48:00O-Rod:I think independent these days really? or is she with like dead oceans? don't know I've got no clue Plan B is a backup birth control option that's there for you when things don't go according to plan It specifically works after unprotected sex and before pregnancy occurs by temporarily delaying ovulation. 48:37David Platt:You have one new message. Translating. Disney and Pixar's Hoppers is now available on Disney+. You could say that again. Critics are calling it Pixar's funniest movie ever and a wildly entertaining ride. Blizzard Potato. It's certified fresh and verified hot.

48:56O-Rod:Now we party.

48:58David Platt:This is incredible! Wow, I am clear in the rest of the day. Disney and Pixar's Hoppers, now available on Disney+. Rated PG.

49:14O-Rod:When is she playing? Post-Atlantic. Post-Atlantic. Yeah, which probably isn't Atlantic.

49:20David Platt:No. Don't know. Do you reckon she's called it that?

49:23O-Rod:Yeah. Just to be crazy. Yeah, like I left Atlantic. That's quite fierce.

49:28David Platt:And under-16s are going to be leaving our waters pretty soon because Keir Starmer's announced that social media's banned for under-16s. Did you see that diva? Yeah.

49:37O-Rod:That was like, they're like, what are you going to do? Probably stare at a wall.

49:40David Platt:Why did she sound American?

49:42O-Rod:Well, you can have an American accent.

49:43David Platt:Look at a wall

49:44O-Rod:She ate She ate heavy I would have hated that I had Tinder at 14

49:49David Platt:And I'm fine How do you think It's going to affect Our audience Probably half it We can't brainwash Them into being trans anymore Yeah

49:58O-Rod:It's probably a good thing I don't know if it is Like you'll They'll just find a way I think the minute I was actually About this the other day Yeah like I was thinking about this The other day If you ban something Or like I was dying to drink When I was a kid Because people were like You shouldn't drink So I was like I was absolutely gasping and it's the same with everyone. The minute someone tells you you can't do anything, you just want to do it. Also, you just reset your TikTok to 18 and then you're fine.

50:21David Platt:Yeah.

50:21O-Rod:Do you know what I mean? So instead, I actually think it might make kids unsafe, but I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong.

50:27David Platt:It'll be interesting to see. It certainly hasn't worked with porn, has it? No. Because you can just get a VPN, as both of us know. Mine's fully banned from my phone.

50:38O-Rod:There was like an iPhone update and you can't even get it.

50:41David Platt:Oh, really?

50:42O-Rod:Okay. well this is interesting information that i did not know yeah i think you can turn it off but it's

50:46David Platt:an extensive process i really don't care about okay interesting so maybe that we maybe maybe this is legit maybe like the sort of era we're in now where it's just like yeah you can get a vpn

50:56O-Rod:because isn't it like grinder like if you download if you're banned from grinder it can tell from like your sim or like your account so like it's actually quite hard to get like once you get banned from Grindr you're kind of fucked it's like one of those things so I think maybe if they related to like your sim card or something and it says you're 16 you can have like shacked

51:17David Platt:do you know what I mean

51:18O-Rod:I mean

51:20David Platt:it is good I guess I just feel bad because I I can scroll for ages and I know but like yeah I need a 27 year old band

51:29O-Rod:it's definitely not good for us no no the more and more I get like the closer and closer I get every day to just like deleting everything well like it's my job but like the minute it's not my job anymore i'm off girls but i also i

51:42David Platt:don't know it's so it's so hard to me i do feel like there are so many benefits social media i

51:46O-Rod:think i met my friends like i think yeah all my friends online yeah fuck that's crazy actually yeah i like kind of like met my community online so i was like lucky in that way fuck that's and i'm also lucky like even like you know like parental bans where it's like after 6 p.m you're like yeah you get banned from my instagram whatever i really i really would have struggled if like that was a thing and my parents would go through on my Instagram like that would have ruined everything. So it's quite hard.

52:10David Platt:Yeah, fuck. I didn't think of the effects on the rural gaze of this poem. That's tough. Yeah. Or just, yeah, general people who are sort of hyper online. And finding community online. Yeah. That is tough. And I also like, obviously we are people that spend way too much time on our phones. Yeah. But I still say to people that like I generally, I definitely spend too much time I'm on TikTok and Instagram. Yeah. I generally still enjoy it. Obviously, it does benefit my job a lot to be across stuff. Yeah, and to know things, yeah. But like, I don't know, the amount of laughter I've had, I mean, I don't know if it's useful information, but I have learned a lot through social media.

52:50David Platt:I've met a lot of great people through social media. And I still think I generally have a good relationship, but maybe I'm just fucking deluded. Yeah. And it is actually just - I mean, it is ruining our brain. I do feel stupid.

53:04O-Rod:Stupider than when I was on it all the time But is the solution to just completely ban it? Well no because I don't think banning anything It's the same like they ban vapes So now you just have people illegally selling vapes

53:16David Platt:Do you know what I mean? It's like saying kissing's illegal And then it's just making me want to kiss more

53:24David Platt:What do you think we should actually make illegal For under 16s instead of social media? I don't think I care enough

53:32O-Rod:Yeah E-Numbers Yeah E-Numbers And Electrolytes Yeah Is that bad for gigs? I don't know No, it's fine Coffee, maybe I was drinking coffee From like year nine I think it did fuck up my anxiety How much of Kate King's audience

53:47David Platt:Do you think is under 16? Not a lot Really? Yeah, not a lot at all Super millennial Or super gen Zed rather

53:52O-Rod:Gen Zed, yeah Not gen half, no

53:56David Platt:What's your version Of Shepherd's Pie On a Saturday night?

53:59O-Rod:Yeah, so we need to get into this Kate King said that shepherd's pies are saturday night food which famously is not everyone's like oh hang on shepherd's pies i mean famously i can eat shepherd's pie whenever i do love shepherd's pie yeah in fact though me and bo were talking about it i actually do like prefer a cottage because it's veg in there right no one's lamb and one's beef yeah they both they both have carrots so i like i like the beef one so we always just have cottage pie technically um i can have any night of the week i just think it's a saturday night treat that's a takeaway imo but then that's friday night isn't it and i'm never in on friday or saturday yeah i'm an alcoholic saturday night okay i'm an alcoholic i can't be having shepherd's pie on a saturday i wonder i wonder how much kate

54:47David Platt:king drinks i wonder if she drinks she never talks yeah like a little like i think she'll have a white white wine spirit yeah yeah blossom hill and did you see the video that she made she was saying

54:55O-Rod:that she like she knows what we've been calling her mom val online evil val yeah but if you see now it's now delight val which is just bliss delight if any of our listeners comment nasty

55:09David Platt:yeah we will block you you're a fucking yeah you're actually shit because you know what though

55:13O-Rod:her mom's been doing the vlog she's been watching her mom yeah she's lovely she's so sweet she is the thing is why evil val was funny i'm not defending it but i remember being in the cafe and the thing that would make me laugh out so much when I'd do an open, like we're having my coffee and no one was going to come in for the next hour because it was fucking six or seven o 'clock. Is I do it and it was just like, it was just like, it's just so not correct. Like her mom's never been evil, but it was the things people would say like, evil, evil Val is bewitching a plan. Like, do you know what I mean?

55:45O-Rod:Just like, just stupid words and conjuring the plan against our lovely, lovely Princess Kate. Like it was a way people use language. I think that was the reason why it was funny is it wasn't laughing at Evil Val or Kate. It was actually just, oh, I don't want to get in the way. For audio, this is, Sophie just went in front of the camera. But it was the fact that she, it was the way people use language that made me laugh about it.

56:09David Platt:Yeah, that is the argument against, or the argument for rather, is that like the memes and the jokes that Kate King brings, like it does it does bring out the best in everyone a bit yeah it's just when it it goes

56:25O-Rod:over the line sometimes when you yeah also it's like if you're like absolute absolute bowls was great yeah and i think ultimately to like we're in a generation now where actually if someone says something mean especially to like someone like straight leave listeners for example someone says something mean they're probably joking and it's probably like a term of endearment yeah rather than calling someone evil it's like whenever that one person called like coldo whatever they call like call us at 35 and they're like back in track queen and shit like this yeah you're like girl shut the fuck up but like they are like it's endearment they like us do you know you feel parasocial yeah but like ultimately i don't think 65 year old or 70 year old woman's gonna feel parasocial or understand that calling her evil is actually just a bit of like term of endearment

57:09David Platt:yeah do you know what i mean um but okay so shepherd's pie yeah i guess i do have memories of eating it on a saturday night as a as a wee lad yeah but nowadays are we barn um but yeah nowadays absolutely yeah no no never no but what is your i guess what's your equivalent of a shepherd's partner so the reason i loved it so much is because it's like i like bangers and marsh i love my mom fangs and marsh like you engraver it's such a party it's such a personal thing to say it's so as as as bill would appreciate i guess she really has a strong stance yeah and like i was trying to think of my own my own strong stance of food it could be anything so i had cake hanging on a monday night i i love watching cake on a monday night because it's like my it's my sort of weekend hangover i need sort of like reality wholesomeness uh i had uh Nando's or Pizza Express on Friday.

58:10David Platt:I used to go to Pizza Express every Friday as a kid with my parents. And then when I was a teenager, I used to go to Nando's with the lads in Hammersmith Broadway. And there's something about the possibility of the weekend and getting a few sweeties after from one stop. Creams. That just, yeah, would never hit on a... Yeah, on any other day. On a non-verbal Monday.

58:31O-Rod:I used to love a Wednesday. I know I always talk about Waterloo Road on a Wednesday, but I don't know if anyone else had that thing, But I was like Walling roads Or wasn't it Thursday was Glee So on Friday morning I'd watch Glee At 6 in the morning Because I'd record it Because my parents Didn't want to watch it With me Or was it like The opposite way Or was it like Wednesday night I remember it was on E4 And I'd record it And then the next morning At 10pm And I used to watch it The next morning At 6 in the morning

58:52David Platt:Simpsons on a Tuesday Even though it was on every day Custard creams Ham and cheese bagel Oh yeah

58:59O-Rod:Slamming a packet of biscuits Before your mum gets home And then still Scoffing down your dinner Like a big fat package

59:04David Platt:Alfie used to tell me Offer eating too many custard creams

59:06O-Rod:Alfie, you sound like an op.

59:07David Platt:Yeah.

59:07O-Rod:Alfie, actually, your childhood sounds like Alfie was a big fucking op.

59:11David Platt:Alfie was horrible to me.

59:13O-Rod:Nasty, nasty man.

59:14David Platt:But he's really nice now.

59:14O-Rod:Yeah, I love him.

59:15David Platt:He's been so nice for so long now. Yeah.

59:19O-Rod:He's probably feeding himself at the minute. I'm loving it. Yeah? Full selfies. Shaved head. Yeah, he's like this. I see you. I see you.

59:27David Platt:Yeah, their latest podcast title was Jesse is Ovulating.

59:31O-Rod:I know I did see that and I thought, they're fucking weird. Good for you girls, yeah.

59:36David Platt:And apparently they've got loads of interactions on it They do, they do very well for themselves As far as I know She's got an OnlyFans for hair Good for her What could we do an OnlyFans for?

59:46O-Rod:I can just fuck Bill on OnlyFans or something We were talking about this, me and Bill Where he was like, if I wasn't an actor I would have done porn No he wouldn't And I said that to him I was like, you're only saying that because You're from Teddington I said this to him because I was like No you wouldn't because You wouldn't have even been in that mindset To do that Oh, God. Great. Yeah, do you know what I mean? Should we do some Agni aunts?

1:00:14David Platt:I've just got two really quick more things. Okay. Which you don't have to have any thoughts on this. Okay. Jim's going to Madonna.

1:00:24O-Rod:Yeah, like fine. I like Jim's skin. I like Madonna.

1:00:27David Platt:Okay. And then finally, thank God we covered that. Yeah, fast. And in the spirit of David Platt at the afters Love So I used to fancy him so much as a kid

1:00:41O-Rod:Why is he weirdly attractive? Because he's lovely And he's a lovely guy in real life When he's on I'm a Celeb

1:00:46David Platt:Little pretty boy Oh I love him But in the spirit of In the spirit of David Platt Being the last guy at the afters So funny I wanted us to do like Sort of a dream afters rotation How many people need to be there? I think it's not finite We can just go So I'm gonna start us off With Michael Aldag Yeah Bailey J Mills Vanessa Feltz Kate King

1:01:19David Platt:The Graf Kings Jalal Do you think the Graf Kings and Jalal would get on well? I don't care Because I'd be having such of a key with Jalal that they can literally sit in the corner. The Graf Kings would probably go pretty non-verbal. Do you remember who the Graf Kings are? Oh. Bring your... Yes, I knew exactly. Yeah. Yeah.

1:01:40O-Rod:I knew the minute you went... I was like, I know exactly who they are.

1:01:46David Platt:The guy from Made in Chelsea that went spiritual and does sober raving and talks about being barefoot. Fab.

1:01:55David Platt:Anton Dubec. Wow. And Cheryl. Do you reckon Cheryl and Anton Will get on

1:02:01O-Rod:No not Cheryl Change Cheryl for like Alicia Dixon Cause she'd be like Yeah She'd be good She'd be good She'd be like And she'd be going to like Oi what the fuck are you on Like sorry like Yeah exactly If you're not having fun Fucking leave Yeah exactly

1:02:15David Platt:And then she

1:02:16O-Rod:Shout out Mystique They're back

1:02:17David Platt:Yeah

1:02:18O-Rod:Are they No that's not Mystique What song does Mystique do

1:02:27O-Rod:Who's that That's Sugar Babes That's Sugar Babes Mystique do Oh my god Sorry Mystique Sorry Mystique We love you I love you Mystique But also

1:04:05O-Rod:it oh yes i got it yeah and i think this is really important um i'm not obviously going to reveal you but hi i can't reply to the sticker for some reason but i'm having a nightmare and i need to advise i broke my dry spell about a week ago with a guy i met on field honestly the sex was mid and he was a bit gross so I don't know why I did it I was just mega horny now I have herpes I think waiting on the testicles and it's so painful and awful he claims he does he doesn't have it or didn't know that he did but I 100 % got it from him I've never had an SDI and it's such a shit one to have because now I have it for life and I'm spiraling about the fact that no one will want to date me or sleep with me again because I have the herp and could give it to them or even if I'm super careful how can I have hope that I won't feel alone forever now I used to feel that the universe is punishing me for having sex with someone I wasn't even into and it's designed to to raise my standards and get to know someone to feel comfortable with them first by before jumping into bed with them love you guys tomorrow morning is knocking stock your fridge now how about a creamy mocha frappuccino drink or a sweet vanilla smooth caramel maybe or white chocolate mocha whichever you choose delicious coffee awaits find starbucks frappuccino drinks wherever you buy your groceries this episode is brought to you by state farm you know those friends who support your preference for podcasts over music on road trips?

1:05:40O-Rod:It is so fucking, and I've said it before, and I'm saying it again. It's so fucking normal to have herpes like it's so fucking fine so many of my friends have herpes it's not a thing do not worry about having herpes that's one thing like obviously you should worry about having herpes educate yourself on what herpes is but i'm sick to death of like this like you are you did the right thing fair dues the sex was made but you went out there and you tried and i think you went out there and you're fucked and you realize that what he wasn't for you whatever unfortunately caught this thing because you know you got it from him but it's like not even unfortunately because herpes is the thing that's very manageable and you do just live with it so many people have herpes a lot of people have herpes don't even know they have herpes i.e this guy we should never be sexually shamed or sexually shame yourself for one catching sdi and two for being sexually free there will be a point where you will be sexually free again you just have to have the conversation about herpes which actually does just like get rid of the dead weight because if they don't understand what herpes is then they're fucking dickhead anyway bars bars babe um

1:06:43David Platt:yeah I don't know what else to add beyond that but but I saw it and I thought do you know what

1:06:47O-Rod:girl I speak on this because I had multiple conversations with people about stuff like this recently and I'm just like actually like we really need to educate ourselves on what this all is I understand obviously like you put yourself out there sexually maybe that wasn't for you and that's fine but ultimately the herpes thing like obviously is a thing and I'm not saying it's not a thing but please don't feel you have to end the stigma of things you need to have to end the stigma of like things like herpes that you actually have to end the stigma about hiv there's like ways to manage it there's also ways that like i can't tell someone else's story about something but like

1:07:19David Platt:it's like you're good like you're good sorry the guy didn't know he had it didn't have it

1:07:26O-Rod:well said that he didn't have it but like it sounds like he did but it's just kind of like i'm sorry that happened to you too and like that you're in this position but you shouldn't feel any type of um any type of shame towards this because it's like it is what it is and we move and we shake like yeah you know like it's something that might flare up it might never but like ultimately you just have something that like so many people have like we've really got to

1:07:50David Platt:end the stigma girls and it shouldn't affect your journey to sexual enjoyment sexual pleasure and it will yeah as you say it will sort of separate the boys from the men yeah exactly um

1:08:04O-Rod:Have you ever had an SGO? I actually haven't, lads. I was speaking about this with Bill the other day, but I actually haven't had one. Neither. And I've really teetered the line. There have been times where I've been like, especially when I was in that really bad relationship, getting cheated on left, right and center. Like I can't believe I didn't get an SGO. Like I can't, I like honestly at the end of it, I was like, I can't believe. Luckily at that point, because he was swanging dick about it.

1:08:32David Platt:So like, you know. The only thing I would add is that like, you shouldn't, we shouldn't feel any shame about this whatsoever period, but you shouldn't feel any shame talking to your friends about this that will make it like markedly, markedly easier.

1:08:48O-Rod:Like this is something that you just have to like, I'm not saying you need to like wear I have fucking herpes on your shirt, but like it's something you just need to be open about. It is what it is. Like you rock with it. Like if you can get to that point, it will be so much more tolerable.

1:08:58David Platt:The quicker,

1:08:59O-Rod:not saying the quicker you accept, you've got to accept it and also i don't have it so like i can't i'm not lecturing on you and what you should do but like ultimately a situation who was it i'm not changing it it was like kind of like analogy on love or like acceptance where like the the the quicker you admit it and like educate yourself and whatever like the quicker it gets easier do you know what i mean usually

1:09:19David Platt:in life a problem shared yeah it's a problem hard just tell your friends and like educate or in your case doubled because you could give someone else herpes yeah like you just don't know

1:09:27O-Rod:and also you might meet someone and be like oh i've got herpes and i've literally got herpes it's fine like there's so many stories like that and trust me so fucking many stories like that there are so many people with herpes please do not feel bad that you caught it it's really genuinely there was a point where all my friends had herpes i was like i want herpes because i was like why haven't i got herpes because everyone's got it it just shows i wasn't fucking enough are we sure this guy didn't know he definitely knew like no shade like i don't know you owe

1:09:55David Platt:nothing to each other but like now he well no he owed a fucking yeah yeah he owed you the heads up so i'm sorry that that happened but that this also i don't know enough about herpes could he have had it and he didn't know he had it like yeah because flare-ups happen differently okay

1:10:10O-Rod:i don't know so if a herpes educator would like to come on the pod would love to have you one

1:10:14David Platt:actually i thought you gave a really great answer thank you do you want to do one more i would love

1:10:20O-Rod:to do one more i managed to get a grad job out of uni which i love and is amazing however i am contracted for another two years and could achieve quicker career progression there than any other similar place in the UK. So thinking of staying for a few more. However, it's literally on the northern most possible area of the mainland Scotland. I live in a town of 6000 and I'm a six hour drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The only real areas of career scenes I can see myself moving back to in the future. If the roles were reversed, I would never consider any level of emotional commitment with someone in my position.

1:10:50O-Rod:Do I just need to resign to occasional hookups and no emotional commitment for the next four to five years or have you ever managed to start something long distance made it manageable my sister wait start something long distance they're saying because they're gonna have to take this job that's six hours away from sorry are they already in a relationship or like they're thinking am i just gonna have to do like really like long

1:11:12David Platt:distance teas but i didn't before they said am i gonna do long distance i didn't get any impression of like i'm in a relationship or i'm seeing someone or like i would never consider any

1:11:21O-Rod:level of emotional commitment with someone in my position do i need to resign to occasional yeah so they're not saying that they're in something but they're saying like am i just going to be

1:11:27David Platt:hookups for the next well you don't have to worry about something long distance because you're not

1:11:31O-Rod:with anyone so let's start there but ultimately long distance does work my sister if you don't mind me telling her she's in long distance relationship you just make it work there's car journeys there's trains like do you know what i mean like you just make it work it makes hearts grow thunder i'm not i'm not a huge long distance person personally but then i feel like in london a long distance relationship is east to south like i feel like it's like it's different when you're up north there's different markers of like what something is i had to be in relationships with people when i was out in college and uh in uh school where like people were like in leeds where like technically i'd have to travel for like door to door like two to three hours

1:12:08David Platt:i've only i've done it for six months from manchester to london and it wasn't i mean

1:12:16O-Rod:that's not that's not that bad also you might meet someone up there do you know i mean it's

1:12:20David Platt:like queer people do exist in these spaces well that i mean yeah it's hard it's hard in your case because you're going to a place that has a population of oh no sorry she's from a place but she's going to another very yeah rural place at the end of scott rail or something um and this person is in a grad job so they're like 22 or something ooh i mean look you can always try this thing and then go like oh this is really boring yeah i've had friends who like i had a friend who moved to the lake district when they were 23 for like a year and it was tough but like oh i don't know i'm i'm i'm a bit of a hedonist so i i would i would fear against that i would try and prioritize like what's going to give me the most the general best life and that would for me usually be in a city but I don't know what kind of person you are um some people are really good at going to like like really rural places and like being really good on their own and as you say like there will be people there but yeah it's it's a tough it's a tough move to make at your age I would say it all depends on what your priorities are and what sort of person you are do you like is you are you a career person like is that the most important thing to you it's fine if it's not because if it's if it isn't then i wouldn't do the move yeah and i would also be terrified of moving somewhere that small at that age but maybe you're a person that's like maybe it'll be a really beautiful place to live yeah maybe it'll be like really peaceful and that's just not the sort of life that i crave or i definitely didn't crave at that age but i also don't love long distance i think like especially if you don't long distances only make sense to me when you're already in a relationship with someone that's like already got a bit of a foundation like if you know it's worth fighting for like i feel like if you're gonna move somewhere you might as well like it almost feels like a chain to the place where you are so you should just experience the place where you are even if it's like there's three people there um but what was the actual question but like am i just

1:14:37O-Rod:thinking to hookups. Like, am I just going to...

1:14:40David Platt:Well, are you even going to get hookups in the middle of...

1:14:42O-Rod:But yes, probably. I mean, think about Sky. There's so much community up there.

1:14:46David Platt:Yeah, but you have to drive, though, right? I can't fucking...

1:14:48O-Rod:I know, but you have a car.

1:14:49David Platt:Like, it's not like you're going to get dropped somewhere and you're just staying in your house for six years, is it? It's basically about, do you want to shag more? Do you want... Or do you want love? Or do you want a career? You've got to pick one. Sorry. That's what life is, babe. I picked a career until, like, 26. And then you just shagged your way out of it. You shagged your way out of a career. Shagged your way out of a development deal. Shagged your way into one. Yay! And with that...
