In short

This episode of Loose Women centers on “straight men” and the hosts’ experiences with abortion rights, cheating in relationships, and especially how online spaces expose women to “much worse men.” They discuss Lily Allen’s new album as “aggressive,” diaristic “tabloid/reporting-style” songwriting that provokes debate, and compare it to other recent “uncomfortable” feminist art (including Shantay Joseph’s writing and the backlash she receives in DMs).

Key claims

women are conditioned to put others first and apologize often; mainstream feminist content can feel exhausting because it’s a fight, not a “nice” listen; men who are good exist but are fewer, and online amplifies the worst. Notable examples include a story about waiting for a partner after a massage, Shantay Joseph being called “lonely” and receiving abuse, and an influencer making a video without reading the source.

Guests

no named guests; the hosts are Colleen Nolan and Denise Welch, plus “Sue” (likely Sue Perkins) appearing as a co-host/participant.

0:33This summer, serve up the cookout classics. Craft mayo and dressing. Toss green salads with delicious ranch dressing or zesty Italian. Serve smooth, craveably creamy potato salads with mayo. We all know it's not a cookout without craft. Welcome to Loose Women. With me, Colleen Nolan. And I'm Denise Welch. Today, we're going to be talking about... Abortion rights. Hi, Susan. And whether or not to stay with your partner when they cheat. I stuck with Barry when he ordered a Chinese for another woman. And I thought that was rock bottom. Yeah, no, for sure, Denise. And I haven't got anything else. That's okay.

1:21It's going to be a slow day today. I think so too. Slow day, snow day, sent home from school. Slow day, snow day. Oh, my God. It's cool. Hello, Luzan. Hi, Susan. How about thou? Good. Good. Good. How are you? Good, thanks, yeah. How's your week been? Oh, well, I've absolutely loved Isle of My Wife on the weekend. And I absolutely love Sue, I think, at Islington Assembly Hall. I actually did. Yeah, I really loved Isle of My Wife as well. Bill locked in. Bill locked in when no one else would. And in that little one. let's do let's go chronologically how was Islington Assembly Hall for those for international listeners in case you're living under a rocks who I think has been on a support tour of Lapsley the final date was in London at the Islington Assembly Hall lovely venue lovely venue kind of like a town hall yeah very cold in there wear a scarf yes it was the final date of the tour yeah how did it go it went it went really well actually very happy with myself however it was like with in-ears and we were using Xander's in-ear, shout out Xander, because my in-ears didn't come in time, which is annoying because we've ordered some in-ears.

2:31That makes a lot of sense. And there was in-ears all down my back, the in-ears didn't go in my fucking ears and they weren't like wireless in-ears, so I was like plugged in. So it was like my jack-to-jack was getting tangled with my in-ears, thus fallen out my ears. And obviously, if you've seen me porn, which some of you should have by now. Yeah. Fucking hope so. I hope so. it was falling all over the place and I just thought it was fucking shit and then I came off stage and Paul my beautiful who shot us before Paul is a gorgeous gorgeous photographer and legend and he probably supports me and he was outside waiting to film my off stage reaction and I was full diva and I came off stage I was like turn the fucking camera off now Muay Thai elbow to the face and Paul was like what what because obviously he'd seen it and was like I smashed it because I did like upon reflection I smashed it but I was so angry and like just like because I was just like get me off this fucking stage halfway through the set I was like I want to die classic example of getting like way overrating something that happened on stage that nobody else no one cared about but I think because it was like people like build all this thing it was the end of the tour it was like a really huge venue like hormones hormones I got my testosterone blocker shot that day yeah so i was making a silly joke yeah it was true um and i was just like all my friends were there and i was felt like just like i've been smashing this tour but um upon reflection like we absolutely ate and the band-aid dan and james absolutely fucking slayed it and gobbled was the best i've seen you play thanks babe as i've said off podcast maybe three times now uh the voice was the best i've heard it which is crazy because it was so gone i think i was also i was just very like touring's hard like it's actually hard and i only went on a uk tour like imagine going around like the world yeah doing a world tour you'd just be partly because you're knackered like you actually do have to shut the fuck up like i think next time i tour like in the days i should probably not speak do you reckon i only just got my voice back like talking voice yeah it's a different it's a different ball game 100 like i feel like it felt like there was like a marble in my throat all the time and it makes you wonder how people do it slash did it getting fucked fucked up we said the same fucking thing yeah me and james and dan were saying the exact same thing we were literally like how the fuck are people touring and getting drunk yeah like it's impossible it's fucking impossible they don't make rock stars anymore well they don't like also like rock stars just i don't know they just kind of can't exist anymore but could the stones make as many tiktoks as we do no exactly no they wouldn't got very far in the current age.

5:11Could they make kind of music comedy adjacent content that kind of subtly reinforces the messaging of their music? Maybe, but maybe not as good as this. Not as good as Benson Boone. How was I Love My Wife? Wait, sorry, I have one more follow-up question because I think it's interesting. Actually, I have two. In-ear monitors. For the people that don't understand at home, could you just say what in-ear monitors do? There's a really good video by Rina Sawiyama. and she plays you what goes in your in ears so you can have things sent to your in ears they're like perhaps not in the tracks like the piano chords sing on key but what I hear is I hear the click and I hear the track that's all I really want to hear I don't really care about drums or anything because I can hear the drums anyway right because the drums are fucking loud next to me so I'm like with that I have the track and the click in my in ears and that's kind of about it and in my own vocal tiny bit that's what's in my in ears but like your in ears for example like james has like everything dan will have the drums and his in ears with a higher click i mean it was fine i think the thing within is is you're also because when they're both in and they obviously weren't my in ears and like when they were both and i couldn't really hear myself anyway um so it was all like a learning experience but do you think it helps with your performance i think it will i think it will definitely help me sing like in better i think it'll help me sing better especially there's one song called yeah cool that i do and i think i need the piano chords in because sometimes i go a bit flat right uh and but other than that not really okay i actually do first why don't do prefer small venues like i want to play arenas and shit but i do think small venues are fun because you can just hear everything whereas that you could actually when i was on stage i could hear the latency like it was like really yeah so like if latency latency for those at home basically if when you're on stage like if i clap there's a delay there's a delay for the time to get through the system yeah so like it's playing out to you like maybe like 0.1 millisecond yeah i've always but you can hear it so like so i'll be like ah and then it'll come out to you but i would have already done that i guess that makes sense um so i could i could hear it and so that was why all the i was just like that's why i was so close to dan or so close to the drums because i was like I can sing to the drums I'll just sing to the drums And do you reckon that You having been on tour Like obviously you've done the set Like a few times then But do you think like specifically You being knackered Yeah A bit helped your performance at all Or it was just a good performance regardless The last couple of songs I just fucked off the in-ears And was like oh fuck it Oh did you?

7:53Yeah yeah I thought you still had one ear in And I was like fuck this And I was just getting me off this fucking stage but I think yeah because I think you're so like knackered you just want to get off stage yeah you played it cool though thanks because I was like that was more what I was worried about is that I looked like I was like shaken but I wasn't thank god but like inside I was like furious and people are calling after the show we have all the labels all the agents all the promoters in Sue's fucking puss yeah they're right in my puss right next to my vulva man-made vulva vulva what about you how was i love my wife i loved it very much and so did my wife um thank you very much for coming thanks everyone who came yeah um it was fun um it was a little bit rushed um for those that don't know i love my wife is a night i put um there's been two before this best night in london best night in london um it's usually at the george Tavern this one was at Moth when it's at the George Tavern we have until 3 a.m.

8:58yeah um when it's at Moth we have until 10 30 p.m. so it was a little bit there were five acts on it was a little bit rushed and I also think just like it was it was quite a chatty audience and I don't really blame them either because there wasn't any real break to catch up and it was at the start of everyone's halloween night so everyone's like fucking buzzing yeah yeah and you could and it's a friday night or maybe i just run a night where nobody cares about the music i think they did and i think over time they they cared i felt bad for the diva who's first on just because i think it was everyone was turning up together and then meeting their friends and exactly like we did natter through the first girl she was very talented but like we i'd i'd be lying well and it was also I think the quieter acts the folkier stripped back acts that struggled with because also like when you go into Moth it's like nobody really hangs out in that other bar room everyone kind of just immediately goes to the venue room and then it's just catching up with everyone but the artists were all great raised lots of money for charity I had a good time I proceeded to get very drunk, I mean to be honest I was quite drunk when I was there Hence me telling the audience to even shut the fuck up at one point Did you?

10:21Yeah Glad that wasn't obvious But no, it was really fun And then I spent the rest of my weekend doing more drinking Nice And then, which ended in me going to a Colombian discotheca on Saturday night Nice I don't know if you've ever been to a Colombian discotheca I've actually never It struck me because they go to the club with their whole family. Love. And it made me think, would I ever go to the club with my abuela? Yeah. And what would we talk about? And what would I be like in the club with my mum, let alone my abuela? You'd be throwing it back. But your mum's come to I love my wife. Yeah but she's also said like She's also stopped giving an excuse For coming It's like when the first one happens It's like I've got to be there And then by the third one it's like Oh you're doing one of your Oh you're going But no It was a wonderful Wonderful weekend And I'm still feeling fragile I've woken up at 11am the past two days How do you put the acts together how do you know what works just to use a fake no it's um well for this one i wanted it to be potentially spooky oh oh so there were a couple of eerie folk girlies yeah there were and it was really good uh there was a quite a grungy band um and then to be honest the other two were just because I liked them.

12:05I chatted to, I once got this bit of advice from one of my musical mentors called Nick Tasker, who runs a label called AD93. AD93. And I used to work with him. And I think when you're first starting in music, you overthink creative direction, maybe. Yeah. And you can get overwhelmed by it a little bit. And I was just like, why how did you decide what the direction was for your label and he was just like it's just music i like and i was like you know what you know what i think that's so fair that's fine yeah and if people like it they'll like it and unless it's like and who's to say it's bad if it's kind of or less interesting because it's very i think sometimes sometimes as well it's not even like the music that pulls people together um i know that like the label management that i'm on they we're having a conversation with somebody and one of the artists was having a conversation with another like artist and they were like it's so funny because like realistically we don't necessarily even like the two other artists don't make the similar dance music as each other right but i think personality wise it all makes sense and like so much of the truthfully the success i've had from booking artists is through like knowing them or knowing the manager yeah and like it is a bit of a tough sell sometimes actually it's probably not as varied as i want it to be it's probably a little bit band focused not i want to book bands but i don't want it to but when i first started the night i had a vision of it being like distinctly cross yeah pollinating um but no but i know what mean uh but it's hard to get people inside and i'm a i think i'm gonna actually take a break from putting on the night just for a little bit yeah just because i need to prioritize what gets my dick hard artistically yeah and what makes me peace and yeah we need to make promoting can be a really easy job and it can be a real slog yeah and i am just kind of you want it to be fun you do this for the fun of it and it is really fun and it what it is really helpful for like understanding how a show is put on because like even though i've been making music for so long like electronic music is a completely different live setting yeah so i don't really have much knowledge of like what goes on into putting a gig or like preparing for a gig or like sound check yeah so it's been great in that regard but i think ultimately it eats into Your time for yourself Music Podcast And paid work Yeah Which is Has to come first Unfortunately But I sound like I'm being a Debbie Downer I can be a Debbie Downer But It was really good It's coming up to Christmas It's coming up to Christmas And speaking of that Paid work If there is any out there We'd love it Paid work Or we just need to do more Content Speaking of Who wants vlogmas on the Patreon channel I seriously want to talk to you about comment below i mean lord knows our fucking patreon needs some love yeah do we do me and louis just do vlogmas i might put actually no i already sent my video of me throwing it back at the columbian discotheca into the chat so i can't put that on the patreon but no vlogmas is a good idea vlogmas i'm trying to think of ideas guys if there's anything you want us putting our families on camera and just how awkward it is honestly let's do it i know you're not going home for christmas no it's just me and bill okay well we can we can workshop um the vlogmas yeah we could do an advent calendar like zoella it's just like i i just like to make money guys and yeah and christmas is looking quite bleak at the minute lads if we don't pull something out the bag how many presents do you have to buy oh i can't even say i can't even bear like to think like it's like i really need to make money like this month i actually need to make money moves yeah I just got a long overdue paycheck and it's and now I think I'm just gonna spend it all at once and then I just need like no I'm not gonna beg guys you know you know where I am you know where we are well yeah and I was speaking specifically to people with uh marketing budgets I guess yeah um but elsewhere in happenings this week so I oh hey Sophie um I know people well actually I was gonna say I know some people are gonna be like why are we bringing this back up yeah but I actually think the appetite for Lily Allen album is still fucking She's touring it.

16:49She's touring it at fucking theater houses. Yeah. Theaters or playhouses. Yeah. But like I've been very interested by some of the talking points between me and my friends about the album. And I think they're more just they're less so about Lily Allen, but more so just about art in general. and first one is like the accusation that lily allen like wrote like essentially like a gossip tabloid thing i'm seeing a lot about like it must have been in the pr because like it's like lily allen like masters the art of the tabloid herself yeah that's like that's an interesting idea for an album in itself and then the the the criticism i've been hearing is like well it's just like it's just gossip like it's their life it's just reporting so good so good so good new summer arrivals are at nordstrom rack stores now get ready to save big with up to 60 off brands like rag and bone levi's adidas and free people join the nordy club to unlock exclusive discounts shop new arrivals first and more plus buy online and pick up at your favorite rack store for free great brands great prices that's why you rack Whatever your thing, it could be anything.

Whatever needs to be done for your thing, Canva can make it an even better and bigger thing. Canva, the thing that makes anything a thing But then isn't that what songwriting is? Well yeah, that's kind of what I want I mean, I feel like it's one style of songwriting And there's many styles Yeah, but Lily Allen's always been that I look at the sun and I look in the mirror I'm on the right track, I'm onto a winner Banger But it's like I get it's like maybe not the most abstract No Or it's like not the most subtle neither is Taylor Swift neither is Taylor Swift well we don't really like Taylor Swift neither is Charlie E.C.

19:08yeah neither is Pink Pantherus neither is sorry to bring him up again Matty Healy no 100 % apart from when he's talking about philosophers and all that bollocks yeah but yeah who's to say that a reporting style of lyrics is even bad like it's kind of it's diaristic it's straight to the point it's confessional I have been re-listening to it and I do think it's slightly like it is so aggressive we and me and Bill have stopped playing it in the car I can listen to it, I like, I love it like I love it for songs, like it is sad it's such a good piece of work that it is like, it's sad like I'm going to go to the shows however it's like there is a part of me that's like I'm not going to come away from it like I know I'm not going to come away from it guys it's sad, like it's a very sad thing it reminds me of sad times in my life like i like even like they're doing that dance in the minute where it's like pussy palace i'm like guys this is so sad like not dances i'd like girl get your marketing but like i can't view this i don't know why what it is about this album particularly whether i'm just like such fan of lily and whether i'm deep in it too much but there's a part where i'm like yeah this is just like really sad just as much as like the new florence and machine album like if you listen to that no i didn't even know it's just similar I know that the single's out.

20:30Yeah, it's out. Everybody scream. But it's a similar thing. Like, men are getting it in the neck. Women are standing up, babe. We're sick to death. But it's like, this song. Not everybody scream. The second one. The one where she's like. Tennis, was that three? No, no. Where she's like. That's Lily Allen. Where she's like. It must be good to be a man and make boring music just because you can. But don't get me wrong. I'm a fan. You're my second favorite front man. and then in another lyric it's like I listened to the 90 for 75 and thought I'd give music by men a try it's fierce she's coming for Mattie Healy she's coming for everybody let's go wait who's the who's the second favourite rap man I think well she's quite with the singer The Macbethys did she yeah god what a mid off yeah but like what exactly but she what are you for into the machine then historically oh heavy on what her beat mid I don't think she's mid at all I think she's an ethereal band I'm chatting out my arse.

21:29I think she's a genius. As with the Maccabees. I just assume they're both kind of like - But similar, it's a very angry album. Okay, fun. But it's not, again, it's like, I'm really grateful this stuff's happening, but it is like, it's an uncomfortable listen. Like the last couple albums from Florence and the Machine I've absolutely loved. This is like uncomfortable in a sense, like she's screaming a lot and she's doing a lot of like, not off key, she's never off key, but like a lot of like a different type of harmonies kind of thing. like it's all she's almost like it's her album kind of is like not saying lily's not poetic but it's a more poetic version of what lily's just done lily's molitor hers is more poetic and it's fucking like it's depressing but it's also i suppose it's depressing because i relate to it and i get it do you know what i mean but like it is and it needs to happen too like i've done i'm not saying it's bad it's very very good it's just like i think it is kind of like me and bill are actually we're actually having a conversation about it um particularly about men like there are like it is bleak like there really is and i think the shantay joseph of all and like they are the that piece absolutely blowing up and she deserves everything but like even that like happening and just seeing how men react and there was this one guy that i saw the other day like an influencer and he made a three minute video and at the start he started talking about the title of it and then at the end he said but i haven't read it and it's like you have just proven why men ain't shit you did a three minute video talking out your ass and like the abuse like shantae's getting like the people in her dms and shit oh the shit people are saying and the shit people are like saying about her saying that she's fucking lonely this on the third it's like Oh, Sophie, what the fuck, man?

23:17That really hurts. She's like, scratch me down. Do you know what it's like? You're absolutely fuming. I'm absolutely fuming. I'm going to sit here for a sec. And then I won't do it. Because I'm also in pain.

23:33Sophie, you're actually useless. I don't want to absolutely... I can't look at her. Ow. I'm a little tart. no worries guys love you but so come on man but we're having a mare today but with the Shantae Joseph overall I think and these albums coming out I think there really is a movement that isn't necessarily like nice to experience and I think it's nice for like women to like you know think about it and like and address it and i think that's wonderful however my point being sorry that my original point being like there really are very few men out there that are good um yeah i thought about when you said that last week because i feel like i am maybe in this might sound wanky in a bubble yeah for sure quite uh good straight men in terms of the ones I interact with but then as soon as you go online yeah um you you're opened up to a whole world of yeah of of much worse men and I think sometimes maybe I forget that yeah and I think I think it is easily forgetful and I think also there's so much there's so much like internal stuff that like I see like men I know and I'm like oh you're doing that like even the other day I was like I had like my hair up do you know what i mean like and i was just quite obviously quite masculine as i do and i went to the i'm not gonna say i went to the garage with but the guy like talked to me and it wasn't even my car that was being taken into the garage like it was my friend's car but i was with a girlie and he just wouldn't he was like direct he was like talking to me about it right and i don't know whether he was either just gay or whether like i've like had that so many times there's been like men in like coffee shops girl you need an mot girl

25:36but like i i think it's like there'll be times where like there used to be there used to be like this italian guy that used to come to the cafes i used to work into uh like mot the machine and we had like a female manager yeah it's this female manager and i'd be there and at work i never used to present feminine i was just like your head tied up whatever and he never would speak to her and he'd tell me about the machine and it wasn't my job and i'd just be like but like he would never tell her and i think it was very much like i think there's so much like conditioning and like ways that men don't put women first and even the way that you think like i'd love to go into a deep dive about this but like even a way women are conditioned compared to like how uh men are conditioned it's like we are taught to look after and yearn and like so it's like it's really nice that women are getting taught a different way to think about relationships because i think for so long even now like i'm in the most healthy relationship i've ever been in and like the most loving and get quite gay relationship um but i think there are times where like i'll catch myself and i'm like why am i doing this do you know what i mean and like and bill like yeah why are you doing that like but it's because i think that i need to um god i mean there's so much like like waiting up or like waiting for somebody whereas like he'd just like just go and do it But I'd be like waiting for them.

26:55I'm trying to explain in a way that works. Okay, this happened with my ex-boyfriend. And this is like the perfect explanation, I think, of it. Which is about what Women Who Love Too Much is about. My ex-boyfriend was like, I'm going to go get a massage. He was getting a massage. He was getting a massage. And he was like, I'll come to your house after. And I said, do you want to do dinner? And he said, yes, right? So this was, he was getting a massage at six, say. So I was like, okay, he'll be home at like seven, eight. the girl that was given his massage was like a mutual friend of us both I it then got to like 9 p.m and I was like winding myself up because I was like one where is he and two like I haven't eaten like I'm fucking starving anyway I wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait he comes at 10 he's not even hungry because he's had dinner with his mate but his phone was off and I was like I thought we were having fucking dinner and he was like we are gonna have dinner I'm gonna eat with you now but like why have you not eaten yet see what I mean because I was hungry but you I'm not playing this on you put somebody's feelings above your own right right you almost get taught like that's what women love too much is about where like basically when you love too much and I think women mainly are taught this is to like put other people above themselves well yeah and I would also echo it you apologise very casually very frequently yeah all the time and I think it's but I think that shows in like relationships and even healthy relationships like I'm in now and like bill is the best person i've literally ever met but like there are times where like i'll still in my head be thinking like kind of like an old rhetoric and you've got like rewire your brain to like make it not that yeah but again it's because it's so ingrained in you so i think this is like the first step to like women and especially women i think a lot of girls have been open to it around our bubbles i think um however now i think people are really taking the mainstream yeah it's having a moment it's having a moment but ultimately at the same time it is sorry final point it's like it is awful to look at sometimes you don't want to there are times where it's awful to look at well awful to look at because it's like as somebody who's had to go and do the work it's hard to do the fucking work you've got to like dismantle like everything that you know in your brain and everything that you got taught um it's when you get all these old women as well when they get asked on the street by like street interviewers like what's your one regret it's getting married young and staying do i mean it's not necessarily marriage doesn't work but like if it were one person you're taught that you're the woman this sat on a third it's like i don't know i think the rules were always broken but i think there's been a grand standing up and i think it is though amazing still uncomfortable to watch because i think men i think a lot of men actually don't know what's going on and it's hard to see neither the men listen, the few men listen, whereas the most of them aren't.

29:45For example, today, I'm really going on, but today, Bonnie Blue is on a new show. Uh-oh. She's on a new show with, I can't remember the comedian. But he's just, he's just, yeah. But she's on some podcast, and he's just calling her like a whore, like everything, right? And this is the gaggery about it, right? Everyone was, all of these women were like, yeah well she's a whore this sat on the third and now you've allowed this to happen so much so that she goes on a show and this guy thinks he now has the right to call her a whore and everyone's happy but if you let one fucking man call this girl a whore all men are gonna think you can call all women a whore you've just done it to yourself this whole issue that we've been going on about specifically about body blue which is like i think it's like the issue isn't with other women the issue is with the patriarchy but now men are going to play into it and go further further right instead of listening to women and be like this is what you want to be like oh well you're fucking scared anyway it's just gonna get worse like and people are like commenting on this like people actually now come to me like i actually do feel a bit sorry for it he's being vile but this is what you wanted this is the thing this is we've all laid down we you all like these girls online have like agreed with men so much and are so fucking digmatized it does make me angry and I suppose this is what I'm saying is like it's this collective stand up of women that feels uncomfortable because if you haven't been told that you have a right to say to say is uncomfortable this whole era feels uncomfortable amazing and great and will lead to such amazing things but I think it does feel uncomfortable as in the era of kind of women fighting back against yeah but it doesn't it like this is the thing is it's like it doesn't feel fun because now we're fighting do you know what i mean i feel like this is the thing is like we're fighting it's the same shit with like trans rights and everything that's going on with like fucking edl and everything that's happening right now it's like it feels good to stand up for yourself but ultimately at the same time it's like oh i've got i've got a fight now do you know what i mean i've got to have a scrap like i've got like really stand up for myself and that's exhausting in itself but that being the consensus i hope that made sense no no i just think it's it's just getting worse for women and women are finally standing standing up and what i'm saying about all this art that's coming out which is amazing and beautiful and i'm like blessed to experience it is it's like the final where that concludes is it's like it's not necessarily always an enjoyable listen yeah for sure because it reminds me of the fact that like so do you think it's getting worse or do you think this is like the uh i think it's getting better for women fight that needs to happen and then it gets better but it's i don't think it's a fight i actually think it's a a collective stand up and leave it like we don't need a boyfriend ignore it then if you're not gonna book up your ideas so then it's this like awful thing because i think women are like oh fuck it yeah i'm like i'm not i'm not doing this anymore so they go and then men are like well you're fucking scared anyway so then the men are getting more right and the girlies are just like respecting themselves do you see what i'm saying yeah but i kind of think it's like i think it's a good thing for men who are good but i i really truly believe and really on my on my life i think have like i think you can name like three four good men sorry i fucking i hope i'm one of them yeah let me see but like but you i could literally name them okay they're in my life they're straight yeah they're all real there's few like that i trust and can give eye contact to damn that sucks but it is it does suck but i think now people are hearing it and like and seeing it all the time and that's a real good thing however at the same time it's like it's not a happy subject is what i'm saying no and it does i don't know if i agree that well it it could be getting worse it often feels like i think i toy with the idea like is it's becoming more polarized and like every single way all the time or bill's just getting into his sidekick um or or is it like are the fringes of these debates just much more amplified are much more visible like kind of i don't know you just used like i haven't seen this clip you're talking about but the bonnie blue podcast yeah i'm guessing the podcast she went on was like probably like kind of like a manosphere yeah it definitely definitely is yeah um kind of alt-right free speech guy yeah um and then we we paste that onto kind of like much wider groups of society but but it does break my heart to hear you say that like four there's four straight men in your life that you like but i guess that's kind of testament to the fact that you're not taking this just it's not an online thing this yeah this is your this is your day-to-day interaction yeah and reality i think what there was like a video on tiktok that was like it was like their auntie saying to them like girls you pick a man that you can stand and you just stick with him and i just remember thinking that was like the most bleak sentence in the world but like as i got older like i see people do that people are doing that people i know were doing that yeah that they're finding someone who's like fine and doesn't knock them about.

35:06So they stay with them. Like it's fucking peak. But I think what's really nice is that women now just like, Oh, I'd rather not have one. I don't need it. I've got money. I make money. Like, and I think that's one of the things that makes me think it's like slowly being eroded away that maybe it is getting better. I think it, well, ultimately it will be better. It'll be better for women, which is great. But I think, I think it ultimately comes with like a lot of like, I think there's a lot of fear that rises in me because if you step away from this thing, men are awful, and so they'll just get fucking worse.

35:40Do you know what I mean? Right. Because as we see in the man is fear, they're talking about ways in which they can be like a sigma so they can catch females. Do you know what I mean? They're almost trying to mind game themselves into an emotional connection with a woman. It's like, you're tapped, man. You're tapped. Cracked is a word I'm seeing a lot now What's that? I think it's when you shag someone Oh yeah, cracked ear Which caught my attention slightly But yeah, I guess it's It's interesting that It's Resulting in Two high profile albums in the last week Yeah Being about this subject matter And I don't think you should Well, it's slightly off topic now I don't think you should doubt your instinctive reaction to For sure liking the album i think it's with the i haven't listened to the for instance the machine album with the lily allen album i think it's like particularly different as you said yeah i think you were saying like it's i don't know why it's different yeah i think it's different because it's not like she's playing it at theaters for a reason and whether you think the writing was good or not it's because it is like a show and it's not like something that you're gonna you're not gonna of put on in the background maybe yeah for sure yeah exactly and it requires your your full attention it's almost yeah it is a show or a movie or a proper story which is slightly different and yeah i guess it is also very different in this well i guess it's not different i was going to say it's different because it's kind of and openly aggressively um taking down a man and i think when you're talking about like um shantae's article it's like uh and these these dms that people get it makes me think that none of the none of my straight male friends i think would ever be offended by lily annan's album yeah about her personal relationship or about Shante's article about how people are embarrassed to have boyfriends like I just don't understand why people it's taking it personally I guess it's like I don't take offence from it because I know or I believe oh no I've gone too straight boy I've gone too uni lad I don't take offence to that because I don't think that's me but I think that's the baseline of it where it's kind of like you shouldn't be offended.

38:24I don't think I'm part of the problem, but maybe that's naive. Or at least I don't think I'm part of the problem in terms of some of the poisonous shit we're mentioning. Yeah, for sure. Now, but... Wow. Yeah. Let's fucking go. So we got deep. How do we even go from here? I know, honestly. People arguing whether Lily Allen's album is high or low art Is it a problem if it's low art? What does that mean? Also as well I'm like Is that just like another way to put women down? Yeah or have I just got to work for my orgasm? Who cares? Let me just cum Yeah yeah yeah literally Literally Sex is sex Or my ultimate kind of finding from this and makes me think about the rest of just culture in general.

39:18I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's been a real long day. Sue just yawned for listeners. Are people just endlessly looking for the hottest take to give? Yeah. Are people just, as Subway takes got us so fucking cooked that we're just endlessly looking for the new thing to say. Well, yeah, and mostly everyone's saying the same thing. And yeah, it's just a relentless cycle of contrarianism. Yeah. Or am I projecting exactly what I think and I'm constantly looking for new things to say? But I just feel like... Top marks to Lily Allen because a couple of my friends were saying, oh, she's kind of begging it on socials, calling her album West End Fool.

40:08I was like, guys, whether you like the album or not, It's been a hit. Yeah. Like the campaign has been a massive... I looked at her. Her stats are amazing. Her stats are amazing. It's already outstreamed her last album. Yeah. So like whether you liked it or not, she's fucking... She's a genius. And she provoked some great debate. And it's really good. And it was a great campaign and it was good. And I will be enjoying Stranger Things final season.

40:37Tough week for horny men though. Honestly, Judd Friar. Sorry, David. get your Trojans on the way out, mate. I also watched The Beatles Get Back last night, so I think. Oh, did they? I will not be watching. Yeah. Well, I thought it would be interesting because I feel like I assumed it was kind of a more straight part of the straight people. I think The Beatles are so boring. No! I won't even be watching the remake with the girls in it. No! I think they're so boring. Let me introduce you to my culture. I actually can't. but it was my whole childhood like being told that the Beatles are like geniuses I honestly I it makes me feel like what why don't you like it I think the thing is what gets me is almost literally relating to what we were just saying I obviously grew up really liking pop music like and don't get me wrong the Beatles are great I think one thing that really turns me off about the Beatles is when people talk about the Beatles they talk about them with such vim in them which is like you know like the geniuses right if you're if you challenge it or you're just kind of like well do you know who else is genius chelle lloyd they're like no and you just kind of like people who like the beatles and just like claim the beatles like these like big geniuses it really just like honestly makes me go so soft like i'm just like there's something in me that's just like so actively against liking beatles right it's like because i'm just kind of like i don't know it just it's not giving i think the music's just like fine i think it did what i did for the time i'm really glad they like congrats like what do you want but then i could like listen to like something else like we're so far past it a lot of people have this with radio head yeah like girl they're fine he's paying his rent who cares i like creeps a lovely song do you know what i mean fake plastic trees rock out so it's not so much that you think the music is bad it's that the music is so overrated in your opinion or over intellectualized is there not another band we can like i love little mix yeah why is there not a film about little mix happening is it is it a male voice thing there's too many yeah i think it is and i just don't care right okay and half of them are dead hey let it go hey they're dead so there's alive people like i'd rather people talk about oasis oh no disagree really like because i'm just like oasis is my beatles about actually i quite like at least robbie williams is my beatles i hate robbie williams but like I yeah but nobody like nobody thinks Robbie Williams is like a genius you'd be spised really people love Robbie Williams and I'm not even capping I honestly no people love him but like obviously they had good songs yeah great yeah but I just like men still are in Beatlemania the girls have let it go men like John Lennon do you know what I mean the only fierce thing about John Lennon is Joe Capone and that's just because she's weird and the only reason she's fierce is because of an oni Wake it up So I think If you were going to get into the Beatles This might be the way You're obviously not going to watch it, that's fine I'm not going to watch films as well Well that takes me on to our next fucking discussion It's basically straight diva It's like It's because it's basically So uncut, it's nine hours Of fucking footage It's just the girls Having a chat Oh no I can't Like honestly makes me sick John's on heroin The only John is smacked up Period He's like When you've lost interest In what I'm saying John is just there Just like I don't give a fuck So why is that enjoyable Because it's like It's kind of like reality TV And like You see all of their arguments And All of their jokes In a way that I've never seen But that would be like me Going to the pub A straight pub And then watching a family of five I don't care but you like reality TV but I don't like the Beatles so that see what I'm saying like that would be like me like what don't I like who else don't I like it's also like straight diva as well because Yoko is always there like you know how people joke about like Yoko was like always there no she's always there she was no she was like there for every single conversation she's just sitting there and it made me think of Bill Bill is definitely Jonathan I am Yoko I think I just I honestly also do think that it's the Beatles are the personification of my like dislike of like straight people of men of like hype pseudo intellectualization I just actually want like with the Beatles I'm just like I'm actually a bit too different for that I'm really sorry I'm too out maybe it's Marvel movies for me or something yeah I'm just like I just don't it just goes through me.

45:30When people are called geniuses, there's something in me. If anyone called me genius, I'd shoot them in the head. Because I'd literally be like, you're tapped. No one's genius. Do you not believe in geniuses? Yeah, I do. Would you not say Lily Allen? Yeah, she's genius. She's a genius. Lily's a genius. But I think that I really struggle with that stuff because the Beatles were obviously there. like Elvis was there which is just kind of like they just kind of like were the first and I'm like well I'm not gagging now because they're not the first anymore Uni and J exist like I'm just kind of like JLS exists that is too fucking far you were true you were close at Little Mix shut the fuck up like JLS exists the one it exists like it's just like they were fierce because no one I feel your heart cry for love and you wear a little rule But do you know what I mean?

46:27Like, it's like, we have more. We don't have to keep going over and over and over. Or JLS. Everybody in Love, Put Your Hands Up is a much better song than anything the Beatles have ever released. What are you singing about a fat walrus for? I want everybody in love to put their hands up. They're on drugs. I don't care. So was I. Sue, I think, was also on drugs. And that doesn't mean, you know, we shouldn't listen to the art from that. You should. There's a reason why I don't know who I was at that point. I think that's fine. I think that's the thing. It's like they did have some absolute smash hits coming out the gate.

47:06And then I think there was this like obsession with them. It's like the geniuses. I'm like, no, they're not. They're actually just on drugs. And there was no one else to compete with at the time. And they were just given all the money in the world. There was no one else to compete with at the time. Who was to compete with at the time, please? The Rolling Stones. Boy band. Boy band. Rolling Stones. They were the first boy band. Oh, yeah, okay. Maybe you got me there. It's like, do you know what I mean? It was like Wonder Woman Direction was up there. No one was competing with them. They're so big.

47:32It's like, and it's like Taylor Swift of it all. Like, it's just like, she could do whatever. She could start doing Ket and then release an album and everyone would be like, oh. Like, it's just, it's so Tyson to me. And it wasn't like they got better. They actually got worse. And then one of them died. Like, it's just like, ooh. It's Peaky Blinders for me, girls. Curtains. And they're just doing all these films. And I'm really happy for everyone that's in them. because the cast looks amazing but I will not be watching. I don't think you hate the Beatles. I think you hate the straight male pseudo intellectualization.

48:05Yeah. Straight females as well. Because it was so in my world as a kid. Yeah. I would give anything to listen to Sticks and Stones by Shia Lloyd right now. Is it the Y album? Is that the Beatles? Yeah. It was like my mum taking me to musicals as a kid. Yeah. And it's like I hate musicals because I was overexposed to them. Thanks, Mum. Now you're listening to this thinking, what a privileged fucking cunt. But I hate musicals. Yeah, because of that. And it was purely because they were forced upon me. Like, why do I want to hear about Sergeant Pepper and all his Nancy friends? Nancy? You're just making up things now.

48:43Boring. Okay, back to you saying... The only first thing the Beatles did is Thomas Tankenjo and Boots. They didn't... What? They didn't do Thomas Tankenjo, did they? who has the drummer called Ringo, is the voice from Thomas the Tank Engine. James from Thomas the Tank Engine. Like the narrator of Thomas the Tank Engine is Ringo Starr. What? See, me being the proper fan. That was my favourite show as a kid. Yeah, it's Ringo Starr. Your eyes. I'm sure it is. And you don't watch movies as well, was my other thing. No, so this is also the thing. I went for a meeting today and they were like, what movies do you watch?

49:20And I was like, the funny thing is, I don't. It's not a movie, it's a podcast That's the best thing about it I don't really watch movies Unless they're fierce Well I was thinking One of the things I had to discuss today was that I don't like We're just disagreeing on everything today I don't like TV Because TV is like It currently feels like Or at least in the American format I have been enjoying Alan Partridge recently And Girls but even girls there's so fucking much of it it's like it's constant and it almost feels infinite so good but it's not an end and it's like TV is now in this place for me where it's like it's neither the short term payoff of like social media or YouTube nor is it the like deeper like long term but bigger payoff of a film for me but why don't you why aren't you fucking with the films why aren't I fucking with the films I just don't have time I actually would like a film and I would like a TV series but again me and the wife talking the other day there is nothing on TV that I like I think things are actually actively awful at the minute name a good series that's come out in the last two years um that hasn't everyone hasn't just like binge watched and like got out of the way there is nothing that has dropped no you're right other than things that my friends are in.

50:52Did succession stop? No, didn't stop my train. Or. I'm just trying to think. I'm just trying to think. Like a real like juggernaut. Like something like girls. Like something that like is like six seasons long. That has come out in the last couple of years. And even then like. Oh, severance? Depressing as fuck. Did you watch it? Silo. Depressing as fuck. Like it's all just really dark and slow. And I'm just like, guys, we could have a good time. Yeah. Have a good time. And then even now it's like, people are like, oh, we need, I'm not going to name them, but people remake what's already been made.

51:30Like they're already saying that there's going to be like a girls come back. Somebody else do like a girl style thing. It's kind of like, well, can't girls just come back? No, believe me. There are maybe about 20 % of our listeners. Yeah. Who are young, ambitious creatives who are thinking, I'm going to make the British girls well it's already been made it's coming out on channel 4 what's it what is it I don't want to talk about it because it's like not oh okay but I mean we can talk about it I think they're called they're friends with Jack Shepp they're called like Leo Reich something like that they're a comedian the last person that came on it dying to be normal will have to be funny whatever the fuck Jack Shepp's called his night oh the last guy who came on he was on stand up in ages he's about a TV show and it's basically people are saying it's like the British girls and it's coming out soon and there's like a there's like a nice cast okay and i wish i hope it's good okay what's the hesitation are you saying i just fear it won't be oh okay because i don't think anything on tv has been fierce for a long time but maybe it will and that's not me i don't watch enough tv to make a yeah but anytime i do try and watch tv i get this really depressing feeling i do feel quite hateful today though that and you know what that shows do you know what and that you know what i think you're in the wrong yeah and i think you should be ashamed but like it's just the thing i'm saying is like things like fleabag and shit like that like they come out and they're so amazing and so brilliant and then it's like you almost like waiting for three years for like another thing to like sit your tv i feel the same with music i really don't think anything's like rock my socks since brouhaha even like what's came out recently my favorite songs of the year is lord favorite albums of the year is lord and lily and even then like yeah i wasn't like they're not i wasn't like like things don't rock my socks anymore maybe it's just me i think that is a thing of like uh what is it generational first age it's like you're just we are just getting slightly older yeah yeah other things to worry about it is just one it's also just kind of like a down i think it is just a downward slope from when you're like 15 basically yeah like what you think is or maybe it's slightly later but like we're past the peak of like enjoying oh my god this is amazing yeah like i've never heard it before yeah but i do also think there may be something to say in that are less transgressive.

54:03Trans. Is this shit? Albums. Did you love it? Did you love it? Did you hate it? What would you rate it? You're the best. Hit the link if you like. There are less transgressive albums. And even in like, not going to drag anyone, even in kind of the level of artists that I'm booking for, I Love My Wife. Even in my own music sometimes, I kind of just do think we are all derivative sometimes. Yeah. But every now and then you get a lovely little gem. And also you do need I think for emerging artists this is a slightly unfair criticism because you should be given time as an artist to develop your voice.

54:47Yeah. When you're at a kind of a Charlie XCX or Lord or whatever level. I think the expectations are a bit different. Rosalia. or Rosalia but she hasn't released for a little while now fuck you do your lummy that sorry that Burghine song eats no yes it does it's fucking shite it's not shite if it wasn't Rosalia if it wasn't Rosalia we wouldn't care but who could do that that isn't a dead person called Rosa Rachmaninoff yeah are they dead uh yes well exactly they're not doing it now so what's your logic here about when people die and when they're alive they're not relevant they can't do anything anymore when I die forget me bitch fuck it doesn't matter you can't like that's the thing people are like oh let's make another Beatles movie line the pockets of a dead person no point unless you definitely want your kids to line the pockets what kids wake it up wake it up we're never having kids fine you win again no no you can win go on you can have it do you want to watch the John Lewis Christmas advert that apparently sucks.

55:57Yeah. Not really. Yeah, go on. We should do it for the pub. No, no. No, we should watch it. No, it's trending right now. It came up on my TikTok. You're going to be nice? No, actually. No, because the girl, I like the girl. Well, because it's not a new song. It's like an old song. It's like a dance song. It's dance music. Have you seen it? I haven't seen it, but my friend told me to watch it. Okay. Okay. Okay.

58:31Labyrinth Good for you Labyrinth Yeah Fine Labyrinth is back Get your bag No Labyrinth is like We love Labyrinth Songwriter Yeah he's incredibly successful In America Yeah Euphoria Did all the stuff for Euphoria euphoria

58:49yeah that was that was that I I found the rave thing to be done quite poorly yeah and I sort of think it's just not giving Christmas it wasn't giving Christmas it was a bit fucking corny for John Lewis they have quite high standards yeah and it was a bit it wasn't very funny wasn't funny yeah deep and funny and it wasn't funny at all I think it's just really missed something there and I think after I've banged shit loads of turkey on Christmas and I'm sitting there with my new prezzies on that comes on the TV just for the EastEnders special am I meant to enjoy that? I don't want to see dad kind of fist fucking his son in earnestness after he's fucking like overwhelmed with nostalgia after he's gone back to like the only time his life was interesting because now he fucking hates his whole family so much yeah certainly can't even talk to his only son Yeah, the only thing that gets him out of the hole is this reminder of his youth.

59:46Yeah, a reminder of his youth when he wasn't tied down to his stupid dog bitch of a wife. Where he once had an idea of what it was to be alive and now he's just in this kind of love. They're neglecting his son who will eventually turn up and be a school stabber. Because his dad can't talk to him. Yeah, and he's on the manosphere. The only time his dad talks to him is when he hugs him incredibly intensely at Christmas. And then after that he never said to him anything again. And then it'll be absolutely fabulous when the boy absolutely gets locked up for shooting up a school. Yeah. And when he's in there, he'll think about the song Where Love Lies.

1:00:19I didn't do nothing. I didn't do nothing. Won't do it. We caught you on. I know. I didn't do nothing.

1:00:28Agony Arts. Yeah. Yeah. Let's finish it. Let's wake it up. Let's put it to bed. The opposite of wake up. Let's put it to bed. Let's put it to bed. Who knows how long I've loved you. I've always loved you still. Suck my ass. Oh, please. Oh, baby. Are you ready? Are you ready? Oh, my God, it's gone. Oh, no, it'll be on requests. Lou and Sue. Hello from a long-time listener. I look forward to your podcast every week. It never fails to make me laugh at my friends, and we all send a lot of love from Manchester. I'd just like to send love back because we've been miseries this week. I want to say we.

1:01:09I mean me. Yeah. So I hope you enjoyed this episode. I'm wondering if you two have got any recommendations for feeling hot when you get rejected. I'm dating a few people at the moment, and this guy I slept with a few times doesn't want to see me anymore because he's gotten back with his ex. Lame. It's made me kind of sad. I have wonderful friends, and I'm having a good time with other people I'm dating. But if you have any tips for getting your confidence back after rejection, then I'd love to hear them. Also, people need to listen to your music because it's amazing and can't wait to see what comes next to your book.

1:01:37Love you. But people do need to listen to our music. But I actually don't know if I could give much of a... Just never been pared off. No. Because I'm a wildy. Yeah. I can't give you... No, because I haven't dated in a while. Yeah, but you never forget rejection, man. It's like fucking... But the rejection's got nothing to do with you. It's to do with them. And in fact, if you've communicated and they've just communicated that they don't want you, like, why are you sad? Like, on to the next. Yeah, and they just... They never got over their ex. Yeah. which is just a peak situation to be in so you should let that wash over you and feel that one out but ultimately but I feel like that's the sort of thing that like we all should think but in the moment oh yeah it's awful it's hard to remember so like she needs some kind of tips just to get through each day hair up in a messy bun cute outfit bottle of wine with the girls Friday night sick in a bin later rub it Robert Robert Robert Robert is crazy also take pride in yourself be the best version of yourself possible be the best version no but seriously be the best music be lang wake it up Be the longest version of yourself Be the best, kindest version of yourself Be the smartest version of yourself Be the most charming, rizzful person of yourself The rizzle kicks The rizzle kicks And Yeah, so Buy a nice tracksuit Or a nice shirt Or a nice blouse Or start posting on TikTok and make him sick with envy When you're a TikTok star Or You know what I do?

1:03:35I immediately move on To someone else Because you know what Really turns you off Someone What Is when they don't like you back Yeah Oh my god that's so mean And I know the pride And like confidence thing Takes a hit But you're free When you're not wanted You're free I'm free And um There's plenty more fish in the sea Is that the No it's too Batest There's plenty more fish in the sea Yeah that's fucking tea I'm out Love to Manchester though I love Manchester I miss it so much Did study there I don't know if I've mentioned it on the podcast before Just data science masters I had a panic attack on the toilet at work last week I listened to the pod And then you brought up my suggested topic of Eamon Holmes And made me feel better At least I'm fat racist Guffy Gammon is good for something Guffy Gammon?

1:04:28That sounds like I'm going to be a racial smur Yeah which I hope it's not that's really nice me and my friend always debate is Louis Gay or straight I said straight because pod name thoughts I am straight although I was thinking about the Beatles I was thinking about the Beatles undressed in the bath and I did get a lob on no I was thinking about the so I'm a straight man I've never got with a dude that wasn't my friend You have got with a dude that is your friend I got with Angus a couple times Kiss and cuddled But it's like how girls say they were bi-curious at college It's whack But I was thinking that The extent of my gayness I don't see a man and I'm like No, no, no I see a man and I go foire It's the penis It looks like an alien to me Even my own penis kind of scares me a little bit Whereas, I mean And you could say Vigines are kind of alien and terrifying.

1:05:33Like when you think of like Stewie Griffin when he first sees a porno. Yeah. He like starts screaming and starts shooting the magazine. Because he's so scared of a Vigine. I don't know where I was going with this. I find the male form Leng. Oh, okay. Wake it up. Like Tom Daly. Yeah, like pretty boys. Yeah. Pretty petite boys I want to fuck a fanboy But it's just It's peeing that I can't get my head around And bumholes But that goes for everyone My bumhole there Bumhole cat's bumhole But no that's probably the I reckon just every 10 episodes We should just say that I'm straight Yeah re-up it But no thank you for asking Hope you're okay Should we go Yeah Guys, that wasn't my best person thing.

1:06:31I think people will be... I think it's nice. I think it's the nature of a podcast, a weekly podcast, that sometimes you're not going to be in your best mood. And you were still articulate. I don't think I was funny. No, but we can't be funny all the time. Nor do I think our listeners necessarily want us to be funny all the time. Nor is it natural to be like... because that's not life and the hope of our podcast is that it's real exactly I'm going to go and make some bangers and mash what are you making tonight? probably a sausage broccoli pasta nice nice nice right night everyone love you this episode is brought to you by Google Chrome you think you know a browser but Gemini and Chrome that's new it can help you with practically anything on the web like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50-page restoration block or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks.
