In short

Rose Gray discusses East London nightlife and gentrification, her music career and stagecraft, and mental health/social dynamics in the music scene. She also talks about performing at Primavera, Hackney Wick vs other areas, and identity (Weaver Line/Essex vs East London).

Key claims

club music became her “home” after earlier indie/soul/poetry phases; her second record stays in an electronic-pop lane but feels “bolder” and less overthinking; sweat on stage reads as “sexy” and signals commitment; TikTok Live can be awkward; social comparison is managed by muting/deleting Instagram.

Notable examples

Broadway Market post office closure due to rent; Stitches “Judgment Square” vibe; Primavera highlights including Addison; her “Louder Please” album cohesion; Village Underground show as a stagecraft turning point; Sugar Hut (Brentwood) club lore; Kesha’s “Tits Out Tour” and arena staging logistics.

Guests

Rose Gray (host/guest; North East London/Walthamstow background, musician). Other named people are collaborators and artists she references (e.g., Okay Lou, Addison, Sega Bodega, Salv, Justin Tranter, Swedish producers Matt Man & Robin Matthias, Alex Metric, Kesha, Scissor Sisters), but no additional podcast guests appear as interviewees in the transcript.

00Good energy in. Good energy out.

08Storm, zero sugar, 200 milligrams of caffeine and immunity support. Storm, energy for life. This episode is brought to you by State Farm. Listening to this podcast instead of doom scrolling? Smart move. Another smart move? Getting help from one of State Farm's 19 ,000 local agents when you choose to bundle home and auto. Bundling. Just another way to save with the personal price plan. Prices are based on rating plans that vary by state. Coverage options are selected by the customer. Availability, amount of discounts and savings, and eligibility vary by state. Is it on the field? Have you guys heard about the post office on Broadway Market?

45Yeah, it's closed down because they're asking for rent for COVID. They asked him, what, 18 months of rent? We're getting, start the episode, we're getting right into gentrification. You know?

00Rose, you don't have to say where you live, but are you sort of part of the Hackney supremacy, shall we say? Well, I'm actually not technically Hackney. Okay. I'm a North East London girl, but I will be moving into the into the big bad world in moving in okay and how are you feeling about that I'm excited I just want to wake up and be in it a little bit more yeah I'm quite suburb right at the moment and I'm ready to like for sure be in it but here's the thing right I was saying to Naomi before I live in Haringey and I love the sort of proximity to uh East London life but crucially I can still leave the house and like not feel like I'm gonna bump into anyone yeah so that's what you're doing market catwalk exactly babe it's sometimes it is have you ever been to sitchers yeah yeah and they're like that judgment square thing with all the gays where it's like, oh, it feels like that, but every day.

01Rose Gray:My mate Lou, I think. Yes, oh my God, we were there together. Yes. Oh my God, we were there together. But there was one night I ripped my skirt and I like, I just got into such a bad mood because I was like, oh my God, people are going to see that I've ripped my fucking skirt. And I was like, as if anyone's going to care. What, down Broadway or? No, in Stitches. Oh, Broadway, I couldn't give a fuck. I'm like, have a look at that. But yeah, but Stitches is crazy. Sorry, could you just explain Judgment Square? Judgment Square is kind of like Broadway Market, but it's actually it's like that instead of like that and it's just a bunch of people sat like facing opposite each other and then you have to walk down oh like like in paris how they yeah face the street right but like it's a bunch of gays and so like you know i just don't get lou was lou was telling it's so scary yeah so scary i mean they were there every night we went to see lou there lou lou we were having drinks it was so nice yeah it was so did you go after Primavera yeah how we couldn't get into your set yeah speaking of we couldn't get into your fucking set because there was 300 people in that it was like there was like thousands of people outside the gate yeah but the actual show was like 300 cap it was crazy like because we we all went in together I think I was with Lou and we all went in together and then we went to look at the queue and it was like you there wasn't even any point joining it I knew that Lou didn't watch my show we tried just to know you know you might know this feeling when you like bump into a friend you can kind of i like oh i know they weren't at my show yeah because they're like not talking about it or when you see a friend before one of their shows and you know you're not going and you have to like pretend yeah you got like yeah yeah yeah yeah loved your shirt yeah it was great i'm glad it was on the friday not the um the rain oh the rainy day that was all that was really terrible Were you there for the rainy day?

47Yeah. Yeah. Were you out? I was out until Massive Attack was just like, it's off. Yeah, yeah. Okay, no, no. Just go home. No. You catch cold, catch death. It was freezing. Yeah. But more importantly, how was your set? Yeah, it was great. Yeah. Really great. I had to wear Levi jeans. Okay. I actually didn't go all these jeans. So it's quite hard to perform in jeans. Right. It's a new thing for me. In Spanish climates as well. In Spain, yeah. But yeah, it was great. so like you're sort of you've got your shades on you're sort of trying to navigate like swan passes i call it as which i'm navigating on the victoria line not making any assumptions about how much you sweat um but how does that affect your performance are you like are you sort of it's showtime or are you are you conscious of how sweaty oh oh wow um so i definitely sweat a lot on stage but i think that sweat gets to a point where it's quite sexy and it's like almost like a like it gives me a glow oh it shows you're committed as well it's like wow they're really they're vulnerable right now i think i've thought a bit about like if because sometimes i wear like shirts and if they're like silky i have thought about the i don't want to have any any like marks no yeah that's i don't think that's where you draw the line yeah patches yeah but i have i always have it's on my rider uh for fans on stage oh gorgeous not not you know yeah yeah wind fans

18boiler room style like we're gonna make it look like a party on stage my mate does that in j it looks really cool on stage yeah well maybe that's on the next rider yeah just hundreds of people just like yeah just sometimes actually sometimes it's the there's that's the kind of my only thing that i have on stage is just the fans yeah that's fair did you manage to enjoy some of primaveral were you jetting off to somewhere no i stayed yeah i stayed that night and it was good what did you did you see anything good so addison okay so fierce really good so good wow which jumped into the crowd i was like that's real as fuck it's amazing and the looks um why has my mind gone blank what else did we see we kind of just we walked around a lot there was a lot of walking who else was there though that was Dijon that night or was that the next night I didn't see I didn't see Dijon I saw okay Lou the night before okay yeah before it all went a bit peaked on yeah I wasn't there the night before I threw in on the Friday morning smart yeah so the night before I felt quite smug actually I was just in London like all right that's fine yeah it was um so I'm quite happy to have missed it but I don't know Okay Lou sounded amazing Yeah and she had the Like the storm She also became the headliner For Friday night Which I thought was quite Easy The crowd was huge I like I'm a big fan of Okay Lou But I didn't know she could Pull a crowd that big That was Really I feel like She is Massive She is doing things I mean it was prime time slot as well I was really happy for her Are there any like Are there any artists In that sort of lane That you're looking at right now That you're like I'm obsessed with them i mean i love sega bodega oh yeah it's kind of like we all i think okay lou works for him i feel like all of us kind of electronic yeah pop girls are like salv is our little wizard yeah and he's called salvador and he's called salvador and he's like irish scottish chilean or something yeah his accent he's just got it all he's got it all yes he's he's incredible he's he's a genius yeah man it's very special and sometimes he just disappears for like a couple of weeks but i think that's what all the greats kind of seem to do yeah realizing for sure and you're you're like i've i've been listening to uh your interview with justin tranter and like i didn't realize because obviously my introduction to you personally was like um louder please and like i I didn't realize that sort of you found club music, like not late in life, but like sort of in your early twenties, right?

58Yeah. I mean, I was going out before that, but I hadn't made the link that that's like the music I wanted to make. Right. So what were you making before that? I kind of like went through many phases. You have to. Yeah. I was like Indie girl, the guitar. Sweet. I had like a weird, yeah, an era where I was just sort of speak, singing poetry over course. Okay, nice. Yeah, probably could work now. Yeah. And then I went like really soulful. Right. And like, you know, like Duffy and kind of that world. And then I just found the club. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Found your home. Well, and it worked. It worked magnificently.

39Do you feel like, do you feel like you will sort of over the course of your career, like dip into different styles? or do you feel like you've kind of found your i'm definitely like really enjoying what i'm doing now but i never say like i can see i love it i do love an era i've always looked at pop stars and been like how amazing you can just shake it all up right but right now like my second record's not she's not moving too far away okay i thought you're gonna say like she's she's dying she's not okay right now yeah no it's she's okay it's really good she's healthy she's healthy okay fantastic being made and it's still it's in that sort of a similar ish world yeah it's definitely electronic it's pop but maybe almost it's a little bit like a bit bolder a little bit less like giving a crap.

38I'm not, I'm feeling like just very good about everything. I'm not overthinking things. How do you, please can you tell me how you do that? I would love to know. Do you know what? I think playing loads of shows helps. Having thousands of people sing your songs back to you. That's really, that's really good for the hit. Okay. I don't know. I think I'm still like a couple years off of that. Maybe you'll like it. Never know, Manifesting You're a year off it Maybe I think less Maybe We'll see I love There's a song That's like stuck In my head And it's from Oh yeah Oh my god Yeah love Oh god K-I-S-S-I-N-G Maybe Yes Yeah I like to say P-I-S-S-I-N-G Just to be silly But Before you came And just Spelling out pissing Do you know what I mean It's like It's like Rimblin But when you're making Oh sorry when you were making Louder Please.

40You didn't know that you were making an album, but it all sounds very cohesive. It sounds like... Hey, it's Kelly Rowland. You may not know this, but I have eczema. So I get how it can steal your time. But why let eczema take over when you can talk to your doctor about EBCLIS? EBCLIS, Lubrikizumab LBKZ, a 250 milligram per two milliliter injection is a prescription medicine used to treat adults and children 12 years of age and older who weigh at least 88 pounds or 40 kilograms with moderate to severe eczema. 12:04really easy elevated vibe whether it's to and from the studio or just for every day the breezily collection is in store now or you can shop online at lululemon.com yeah it's really i i was that's interesting that people say that because i actually didn't think that it felt that kind of easy but i felt like it was like you've got like damn which is like almost techno and like breakbeat and then you've got switch which is just like pop yeah um But I think because it's me and it's my voice, it is cohesive. I've heard other like artists saying this. I think Charlie said it. She's like, it's people think I'm, oh wait, I'm actually referencing a lyric.

48No, it's when she says like, you say all my music's the same. Yeah. Because what is that? I don't even know that. Is it the same? Yeah, I'm like. Sorry, I'm looking for a lyric. but yeah it what it really worked i think loud and please and i i mean i loved it and my mates loved it and i was playing it for like six months to just all my friends so i knew that it was kind of good because they liked it it was so fierce i mean it is so fierce like yeah we're talking about like it's like yeah yeah no it is loud and please i remember uh bill sent it me and i was in such a bad mood i was headed to brighton and i was in such a fucking mood

25Rose Gray:it has that effect yeah it's crazy I was like I'm always writing absolutely furious and he sent it to me and I was like right I'll give it a listen honestly Dan was the opener right yeah fierce and it's just fierce on fierce just every song no skip album but I do have to ask do you actually think Hackney Wicks is fierce Hackney Wick is fierce not anymore yeah okay sorry it's the truth when was the glory days of I still go there and I still go out there sometimes going out there this Friday okay but it's yes different it's a bit different i have to agree do you agree i do agree i mean i we've we've publicly shat on hackney wick really i love hackney every time i go for all its issues it's got hackney is one of the best areas in london for sure hackney wick to me is like it happened too quick it's very quick yeah and it also kind of sometimes feel a bit like a no man's land like you're quite far out you're kind of on the motorway i still think the clubs there are great the clubs are fab color factory see us um yeah i love it i'm always there but i do think it what it feels like to me is what i changed to is like no offense to the girls from essex but like it's turned very like the weekend is very essex you know i mean no offense

46Rose Gray:but but it is not the we it's not the weaver line commuters it's not it's not like you know you're also i'm kind of slyly essex we love it but it's like there's a type you know the type the s16 i know i know and they'll be walking through victoria park on like i don't know friday evening you're like oh shit it's happening and you know that it's about to go off in hackneywick you know they haven't got hotels gonna stay out all night they'll be at the canal in the morning you know the vibe everyone knows they're gonna go to night tales yeah maybe it's a tree you know what i mean that's the palm tree yeah i actually disagree with you i don't i don't mind the Essex Weaver Line people it's the aesthetic I grew up on the Weaver Line and we love the Weaver Line also the Weaver Line is down right now for a long time because there was fire on the Weaver Line really I didn't know that in Walthamstow what the fuck yeah Rose Grey Walthamstow straight the other correspondent yeah I am the Walthamstow I'm the mayor of Walthamstow I actually saw Stella the other day and I realised she follows me Stella Creasy the Labour we gotta follow the The mayor of Hackney filed us the other day.

52And I thought, that's cool. No, that's... Like, yeah, following straight diva. That's cool. The one who's just... The green diva, yeah. The one who's just got elected. The green diva with the pink hair. She just follows straight diva. Oh, no, sorry. Another councillor. Zara?

05Rose Gray:Is it Zara? That's quite... Zara Larson. Yeah, it's Zara Larson. She would be an amazing mayor. It would be the best. She would absolutely eat it up. Smart girl. Smart, smart girl. Okay. And so you're from Walthamstow. Yeah. you're a real east londoner yeah yeah but you were born i was born in a place called hymes park which is like oh no technically i was born in muswell hill technically you were born in a paddling pool in muswell hill yeah first thing on your wikipedia so weird rose gray was born in a paddling pool talk us through i could use that on a day like today god damn yes very it's new year's eve new york's eve went in a paddling pool parents were like having friends over and couldn't contact them all to to say the party was off so there was also about six sort of like roaming like bohemian like actors i don't know who i don't know what they were they but i keep i bump into people nowadays and they're like i was at your you had to make dance pop it was literally it was the setting you were born into okay but you grew up i don't i don't remember muswell hill i always think about imagine if i'd grow up in muswell hill there's a decent decent looking spoons in muswell hill that i'm yet to uh yet to experience i guess you're kind of new i am i'm i'm in the green lanes world but muswell hill is i hear great things you guys hear great things about muswell hill i hear good things i hear great things i think it's a good place to have a young family yeah yeah oh and that's nice like right in the morning with the babe but you i'm from so so i grew up like very close to wathom so it's called heim's park oh yeah uh confused little area okay it's like either you're like an east ender or you're like essex and it's like you either come into town like was what i did and grew up on like brick lane in camden or you're like at sugar hut okay like there's not really much but i used to kind of dance between them both Head to Brentwood on a night on Friday.

01Talk me through Sugar Hut. I have no idea what that is. You don't know what Sugar Hut is? No. Oh, are we about to do this? Oh my God, it's the club, babe. It's in Brentwood. Okay. It's a club. How do you know about it? Because it's at Essex. It's at Essex Divas. It was featured heavily in Only Maze Essex. Is it? Yeah. It's Sugar Hut. And they would open it at like 10am and shoot there. Pretend it was a club night. Oh, gorgeous. because some of my friends used to be extras in it and stuff that's so sick that is so fucking sick i would love that that would be dream job just in the background like watching the argument

43Rose Gray:oh i'd love it so much no i used to what about faces you had a face no oh that's like the other that's the other one gants hill oh that was good there's some good there was some good nights there but um did you feel like you were choosing your identity when you were like spending one night friday night in brick lane yeah saturday night in brentwood yeah what was cooling out what were the pros and cons of each um i could get a i could get like a lift to uh gants hill and stuff from a dodgy boy from a boy or from my dad okay and then i think but i think brick lane was yeah quite it was definitely my place being more in london and the way i dressed and yeah the friends i started to form was quite clear that was gonna be my your calling my calling yeah do you do you remember like when everyone went to brick lane all the time i used to work in brick lane when i was 18 yeah in a vintage it was such a bad vintage shop it was called will it probably shop there It was called Blitz.

47Rose Gray:Oh. Is it not there anymore? It's the, it's still a shop, but it's called something else. I don't know if the people - I remember Blitz. I used to hand out flyers on Brick Lane. Oh, one of those do you feel? 15%. They used to do the 15%. Yeah. There's still someone there with a sign holding it. Have you seen the sign holder? God bless. You do. I'm a sign holder for a vintage shop. I think that's so funny. I didn't start going to Brick Lane until 2016. Yeah, Which I don't know. I don't know when you were going there. I don't know if I got it at its good part or not I definitely used to really love it and I used to go there a lot where would you be going to like bars or just get a soul beef bagel lovely there's always too much mustard we need to get into that no so reasonable though yeah reasonable price too much mustard no I disagree I think you need that amount of mustard because there's too much beef yeah there is so much beef And you're basically just having beef on its own.

45So the only thing to cut it with is the mustard. Okay. Maybe we can meet in the middle, cut the beef. Yeah. And then we can also cut the mustard. Do both. What's your favourite bay of Gilrose? I'm just thinking it's really embarrassing. I used to get the egg one. Okay, cut. That's okay. Let's take a break.

07Rose Gray:It's so embarrassing. Health queen. You know what? I think that one's only like two quid isn't it I think that's why and like a cup of tea was like 60p oh easy yeah loads of sugar and then I like the drama between both places but they are owned by the same person I think but they're do you know about this they're ones that are next door to each other yeah yeah they're exactly the same but no one goes to one of them everyone goes to the other one because people just join the queue now like there's still a queue outside I heard some controversy recently but I can't remember any details of it and it's probably not worth spouting on the podcast.

45Rose Gray:No, someone will probably find a comment. Okay, so you're growing up in Hyams Hill. Hyams Park. Hyams Park, apologies. It is like the bottom of my road is walking so. Okay. But yeah, it is technically Hyams Park. And what is, what's soundtracking your life at this point? What music are you listening to? Definitely quite a lot of Lily Allen. Okay, period. Yeah, a lot of fuck yous. You know, the now comprimations. That was just everything to me. Do you remember the one that they put video games on by Alana Del Rey? And it was like so upbeat and then video games came on. Do you remember the first time you were like either shared the YouTube video of the visual that she made or first heard that song?

33Yes, 100%. I remember being on Tumblr and seeing that and be like, who the fuck is that? with her like I just remember her face and her lips I'd never seen like lips done before honestly and I was like obsessed and they shot the cover in like Watford right or something really yeah they shot it in the UK and they made it look like it was like in like I don't know Beverly Hills or whatever it's crazy I did not know that yeah yeah it's this like random set house in the UK I know that she's like she was signed through Germany and like had more going on in the UK and it was Fern Cotton that put her on right I remember that where Fern Cotton and like playlisted her all week and then that was a thing that like took it off and then The Weeknd posted her.

12Really? I remember it happened. My like best friend from growing up sent me the YouTube video and I remember it had like 10 ,000 views. Oh. And then it just popped off. Popped the fuck off, yeah. Were you a Tumblr girly? No. Okay. This dog, I'm just going to shut this up. Sorry, yeah. Is it okay? There is this dog up there called Sandwich and it's the most jarring dog. And like, they'll just like scream like sandwich all the time. Sandwich. Sandwich. Sandwich. Yeah, actually the worst. Okay, you were Lana. I was actually Lana, yeah. Not Lana. Lana Diva. Wasn't really on Tumblr. I don't really know.

50Did you do Marina? Were you on Tumblr? Yeah, I loved Tumblr. Probably for the best. That was like my main thing. I was on like the dark side. Loved Marina. Loved Florence. Oh, so good. I was also quite into my like soul music. Yeah, you like. I was just obsessed with Dusty Springfield I don't know what happened there I still listen to her but Girls Aloud The best Don't get me started, love it When they did a crossover with Sugar Babes for Comet Relief What? I've not seen that I think it was for Comet Relief It was just an encyclopedia of niche Niche pop culture From 2010 to 2020 Just like the worst type of pop culture No it's brilliant Just absolutely useless knowledge We were just talking, so Kirstie, she's literally just left.

38We were talking about Paul's Boutique and I sold my brown Paul's Boutique bag that had all the badges and she said she bought one and I'm just convinced that I like sold it on, I don't even know what it was. It wasn't Vinted, it was eBay. And you're convinced it's yours? Could you imagine if your initials were in it? I think I want it back. Why have you got that image on you? Was she a big influence for you, speaking of Paul's Boutique? Like obsessed. I also think everyone fancied her. I think - Do you remember? I remember when the album dropped I was in year six and I was on a French trip I'm not even kidding Swagga Jagga came out I bought that honestly that album Cher Lloyd Sticks and Stones are you kidding?

14Rose Gray:Cher Lloyd by Cher Lloyd she invented grime can you remember Dub on the track? remember when she released that? yeah and those so those trainers they're Isabel Maron they're back in they're back in literally amazing oh god she's the best X Factor was a big part of mine 100 % growing up do you still feel that you chase the x-factor feeling because i do i feel like one day i'm expecting confetti to come and all the nations when you're when you're performing yeah yeah it definitely sets some like unhealthy yeah ideas of like just it happening overnight as well thank you i just thought that simon was gonna call i don't be like you've got a number one single like tomorrow and it's gonna happen i honestly i yeah i think it's ruined the minds of our generation to be fair there could be a whole thesis on i reckon so what it did to us i like ruined my brain who's your favorite winner or favorite contestant katie wrestle i always think about her i think about her once a week they did and she was signed before do you remember when that all came out and she was signed before and it came out oh yeah in america and everyone tried to cancel her for and i was like she's just a working artist yeah because they were like she's already failed once why she allowed a second chance do you remember when she had the fight with katie hopkins about tattoos no was that on like the one show on like this morning or something i loved diana vicars i loved it once like banger and her she's yeah she's the past if you think sorry i should be speaking off mic but if you you know gracie abrams phoebe bridges that sort of course singing they're running no they're walking because Diana Vick has run or something yeah she's quite close Diana Vick's quite close to like Ellie Goulding yes and I did not play about that first album did you do Ellie Goulding when that dropped I was into it I was really into it Goods and Horses are you kidding I was really into it and a very good songwriter I love her she's great yeah shout out Ellie Goulding she's playing shows like about to have a baby any moment I think she might have had the baby A half-time show at the World Cup or something?

27Is it? Yeah. Really? In the quarterfinal.

31Rose Gray:Talking of World Cup. Yeah. What is everyone doing tonight? What's everyone doing? I haven't watched a single game in a pub. I have watched every game from home and just had people over in the garden. Yeah, maybe a better vibe. It's so nice. I think sometimes watching football in a pub can be like, firstly your view and queuing for drinks can be a bit of a vibe kill sometimes just other people the lads can can ruin the lads yeah that being said though i went to watch it old nun's head you know the gay pub in nun head um and it was the worst experience of my life i don't know if you've ever watched football in a gay pub babe they don't give a fuck and so i was like not me giving a shit and i was like well and it was like and then the football chants are making up they're all about bumping it i was like why not we were only screaming when david and victoria came on screen oh my god looks amazing where have you been watching it um i actually i ventured to south to watch the last game um at the ivy pub nice gorgeous your ivy house gorgeous but so far yeah took me 90 pounds to get home did you uber it yeah 90 pound is that a joke she ubered it she's rose fucking no no i wanted to get the trains but the it was so long it was the same so long who was for the last who said this it was 150 from east back to south the other day when the other world no i did like i limed on the way there from liverpool street god lovely lovely lovely over the bridge across the whole of london oh god and i started to think okay i get it about south london now i get it south london i love it do you yeah did you used to live there i just moved to east which is great because east is great because it's convenient but south is where my heart is that's real yeah and also it's just like i think it's greener and nicer and i think the people um a little bit more chill yeah less yummy mummy yeah in my opinion well and just less clout as well just just less clout just less clout just what in a good way yeah no i love it or at least than this like this little micro climate you're in right now yeah you are right right in the heart of it yeah this is i am taking the piss every day i wake up and i'm like what am i doing this is not i have because I have tried to figure out, like, because I've seen you do a pod...

06Oh, sorry, is that my phone? Someone's phone.

10Rose Gray:No, it's not. It's not mine. Is it yours, Louis? No, mine's filming. Oh, it's mine. I'm sorry. No, no, no, it's all good. We can pause.

He's just really positive and he's got a whole little community. But he's on it all the time. Yeah, you have to really, to stream, you have to give up your life for it. We've never done streaming. Have you ever done TikTok Live?

06I don't know if I agree that it actually does anything. I did it once and I just get like, I ever get someone calling me trying to, or someone trying to like shag me, which is quite fierce. Like if you want to feel a high high and a low low, go do it. but yeah it's not I do I do it sometimes when I'm getting my glam done oh see that's smart just to like see what's going on sometimes I'm like in the flow and I really enjoy it and you just have good conversations with people other times I just feel like I'm I don't know what to say like I just feel a bit awkward I feel like I just don't I end up being like Chelsea Lear where she's like thank you Cindy all the love Becca thank you so much Nicholas it's very that yeah what I mean thanks for the rose yeah thanks for the rose thanks for the rose Kimberly oh yeah have you ever made money on it no no I never no not from it just from live Jasmine for Sue yeah just live Jasmine yeah um that's dreadful but speaking of going out you've got new music coming out thank you oh the same way on Friday

05Rose Gray:on Friday yeah how you feeling about it I was like I feel good I feel really good we heard it this morning we did it's fucking fab when it kicks in it's like and and the the sort of the looping melody is your own voice yeah gorgeous yeah well i i did it because i didn't know what was gonna go in right i didn't know if it was it was like a demo yeah and then i was like oh i think that's quite cool actually sweet it's a little bit um someone told me they it reminds me of white lotus that okay i get what i don't know how i feel about that but i don't know if it yeah i don't know if i'm glad you You guys don't think that.

42It's just like a sample-y voice. It's just because it's, yeah. Yeah.

45Rose Gray:Or is it a sample or is it just... It's my voice and it's just like... And the breaths and stuff and we just made it into like a little... I haven't seen White Lotus, but I thought the vocal performance reminded me of Sauvignon Blanc by Rosalia. Oh, wow. On the hook. I mean, she is... Top tier. North star, yeah. Top tier. Who did you work on that song with? I did it with Justin. Okay. and I did it with they're called Matt Man and Robin Matthias and Robin they're these two like Swedish wizards I started working with Swedes fuck you leveled up baby check I had my first yeah love I had my first trip to Stockholm like this time last year and I was like I really get it I get it I don't know what I think it's to do with their precision really yeah they're like hyper fixated by melody and Would that not get annoying in a studio, in like a writing session?

Read the full transcript

43It's not like - Okay, I think we got it now. Yeah, you don't leave, you know, some, you probably have this, like sometimes you're in a session and it's fun and you leave buzzed. But sometimes like the song's not always all that. Sometimes the harder sessions are where you actually like write the song. Yeah. So I had that in Stockholm a bit. It's like, I wasn't leaving, like wanting to go out for a drink. I was like, I need to go to bed. Exhausted. But the songs - Okay, sweet. yeah yeah really i learned a lot actually from them i think maybe working with a swedish producer is like above like top 10 album for me in terms of like hopes and dreams i want to get sent to

23Rose Gray:sweden yeah i'm sent to yeah i did feel a bit like i've been sent it's like you made it yeah because i was like i was sort of told i had to go are you are you um are you good in just sort of like blind date sessions generally yeah i actually really enjoy them if it's a nice person they're always nice they're always nice um yeah i do enjoy it i sometimes think a little bit of magic can be made the first time yeah really interesting because like especially if they don't know much about right i think when i went to sweden they didn't know the robin and matthias aren't really like plugged in on everything that's going on which i think kind of works I was like showing them stuff like was out and they didn't that's so sick it's quite cool yeah but I like that I kind of like when they don't know exactly what you're doing and how much of like the next project if you're allowed to talk about it was done in Sweden probably like four or five songs sick on that album yeah oh yeah and are we allowed to is any information about our future potential projects no no it's not she's not to be disclosed shut the fuck up Lily shut up I'm still finishing it as well which is kind of it's quite new for me to be like putting out stuff and finishing and touring but I'm liking it actually it feels like it's all it's all like merged together rather than like one thing at a time right which kind of happened with louder please so finish the album put the album out tour that album and then it was loads of lives yeah it was the the tits out tour the tits out tour tits out that was crazy getting that call did did kesha actually like did anyone get their tents out that wasn't oh yeah yeah yeah oh wow okay oh yeah kesha's like she's she is a hippie really i think if she could she would just be naked all the time and she says this i listened to her call call her daddy podcast actually she just talks about kesha's been on call her daddy yeah wow it's really good talking about Dr.

29Luke and stuff or just talking about her career? No, talking about the Tits Out tour. I was kind of... I was waiting. Say my name. Did you say?

45Rose Gray:Because it's like two hours long. I was really... You're sitting on two times. Bless her. She's amazing. But mostly about the tour and just being... and all of her sort of spiritual practices. It was very, very spiritual. What was that tour like? It was the Kesha Slater. Kesha and Sator. And Scissor Sisters. Oh, and Scissor Sisters. Holy shit. It was so fun. It was this time last year. Right. Literally probably to the day. It was all I could have ever imagined. Like when you're growing up, what you imagine an American tour to be like, it was that. It was like the tour bus looked like something from S Club 7.

23That's amazing. Are you sleeping on the tour bus? Yeah. Wow. With the dancers. and how did you find that like sleeping on the bath i'd already done it with sugar babe so i kind of was a bit used to it i quite like it yeah good like i i felt like i was like in a cocoon every night what was something that surprised you about sort of a tour of that size that you didn't well the machine of it yeah how many people it takes to tour and something that blew my mind in fact on this tour it's not fully the case on the because they were amphitheater so they're already built but on like arena tours like for sugar babes no arena actually has staging so they have to put that up every night yeah they're all empty shells yeah which just is as like a business it just doesn't make any sense well it does make sense because the artist has to buy the staging or pay for the stage it just feels like a way to like charge artists on it it's insane because you wake up in the morning you're literally you're just in a shell yeah but if you're harry stars you want the coolest stage of all time obviously you want a track yeah everyone just wants a different stage well if you are I guess if you're Harry Styles you do want the ability to have your own stage whereas if you're someone who's you know who's the best and I know probably shouldn't talk about him but the way yeah he does his staging is amazing really that world in the middle and he's just in a world Travis does quite insane stage yeah oh so fierce and is like a floating what would you do if you do yeah i do i do think about it i i want like movable stage i want stage that moves like but your fans have to push it

05have you ever like i've seen something in the national that's like where the stage just like moves around like a lazy susan just on was it the one simple oh i saw that did you see it i go see it but i heard everyone yeah like a lazy susan that would but massive yeah and then sort of it's actually interesting because i saw that pink panther did something a little bit similar so i can't do that but like um i really love the idea of like a train that can kind of become a club like that could be like yeah okay but this is we're talking like this is arena i don't think we're getting this in at coco you never know i'm a girl but like what was um what were the crowds like were you were you like having to sort of win over people yeah i was opening so and it's quite early sometimes it was like 6 30 four artists every single night or was it like slater did the first half she did like a lot of dates yeah and then i took over from slater okay um so we like missed each other by a day um yeah some nights were harder but what was amazing it was so young her crowd loads of young girls with like glitter in their hair yes what yeah animals are they still called animals yeah yeah oh because i think it was like it was like her fans and then it was their children as well.

35Like the mums with their like 11 year old girls. I bring back being a freak. I feel like Kesha's whole thing was like everyone's a freak and it's great. And I feel like that needs to come back. Yeah. What happened to being a weirdo? She is amazing. Yeah, she's fab. Yeah, but then you can't force being a weirdo either. Yeah, true. Yeah, you can sense that on my life. Yeah, on TikTok. Awful, awful. but in your conversation with Justin it seemed like I don't know if I read this wrong but it was almost like the discussion was that like you were sort of a recorded musician first and then live came next is that correct yeah yeah yeah I definitely was like very much in the studio right and I've been making music literally since I was 17 16 like and professionally like seven years and writing for loads of other people but i hadn't really i didn't really have my stage right okay at all and what and so what's that what's that journey been like the journey i mean last year i kind of went from never having in is to do you have yeah yeah they are the change is wild the change is crazy i've never used because you just can't really hear yourself you're like well no you also can though yeah you're hyper amplified yeah they do help so much more but then the changes i i don't maybe i'm just doing it wrong taking them fucking out batters i hate them so much like because you know you twist them in twisting them out i just seem to forget so i'll be like on the stage like ripping my ear out and it's the most pain i've ever felt yeah also there's like i've seen memes about it like every artist is always struggling with their inner life yeah your show with uh oh my god i played where where was it like is linked to an assembly hall one of the islington assembly hall things and um was playing there and i didn't have my mould yet so i was using these other fucking in ears oh they're evil oh my god they kept falling out and i was like that was the worst step i've ever done and i came off and it was like filmed me coming off stage and i walked off i was like get that fucking camera i've never ever done it before i was human i threw the mic on the floor after the last song i was being a prick it wasn't like bad like no one would have noticed it was like all like it was part of me like serving it no i did i like throw up the floor i was fuming i was absolutely fuming no it's really annoying and it's no one's fault it was my fault like it was actually my fault yeah i didn't have so last year i didn't have molds and i didn't have any idea how it worked i didn't understand well i played a few shows but um i kind of had to like learn on the job because i booked the sugar babes support slot which was like the ot arena and i just went i just went with troy my dj and like he literally just like press play and it was a track like i didn't have a built project or anything so you weren't using in is for that one because it was just you know i did have my in-ear sorted i don't i don't think you can actually like play an arena without in this right i think that's a requirement and for for listeners who have no idea what in is it's basically just your backing track in your ears and your voice in your ears right just like wearing headphones yeah it's the shit that every sort of uh yeah larger musician has in there but they didn't used to have them you know really just be ringing it and trying to run run off the bands and yeah if you look at like footage from before like 1990 whatever they don't have them so weird but was there a show that you think everything changed perhaps um my show at village underground yes was a bit of a moment where it's like i felt like okay i think i've got this stagecraft thing and i feel yeah just very free on stage you know it's quite revealing like you feel very like especially i just i'm on my own on stage yeah and i had to really get out my head and also no one actually really knows when you're in your head so i learned that even if you get them little things come up just like put it down but now like my my last few tours and like festivals i i love it i feel i love it i love the feeling of like i just don't even remember what happens when i'm still on stage to be honest right i was gonna ask like in this associate this idea of like stagecraft are you sort of are you talking about obviously you're talking about your voice and the way you move but is it like is it have you prepared stuff or is it sort of that just like you're less you're actually less in your own head basically it's just that yeah it's not um it's more it's just like holding the crowd as well and like knowing when to you know bring them in and also just like being still something i'm i'm still working on it right it's really hard to be still on stage but actually when i watch artists i love it when they're just yeah centered like hi ryan reynolds here for mint mobile are you looking for a beach read this summer, may I suggest your big wireless bill.

35It's got suspense, mystery, a slightly flat emotional arc, and a shocking twist where you realize you've been overpaying the entire time. Fortunately, though, Mint's story is better. Upfront payment of $45 for three months,$90 for six months, or$180 for 12-month plan required. $15 per month equivalent. Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only greater than 50 gigabytes may slow when network is busy see terms right yeah i'm still yeah it's quite commanding and uh yeah powerful powerful is there a track that you love to play the most um my song tectonic weirdly it's not like it's not like the biggest song but when i play it live always after once i've done it i always feel like i've got the crowd yeah so i always need I think I need to bump it up in the set a bit because it's like just captures people straight away right yes but a bit of a vocal moment as well yeah tectonic moment yeah love getting geological and can you share who else you've worked with on the album like yeah like Saga again Fab welcome to Saga Sir Back Caroline Sands yeah um Matthias and Robin um Who else am I working with?

56It's just kind of them lot. Alex Metric I do a bit of stuff with. It's actually basically the same people. Oh, gorgeous. Amazing. And Justin Trentoff. So famous. I love Justin. Hell yeah. What a line-up. Decent five-a-side team. Yeah. Don't know how good a football team would be. Rose, we like to do Agony Ants submitted by our listeners on our show. would you like to pretend to be informed as we do every week? Yeah, how fun. Let's see if anyone's left any. If not, we can get them from last week. And just a warning, some of our listeners, I'd say 70 % of the questions are basically like, I like this person and I can't tell them.

43Hopefully there'll be some interesting ones today. Have you guys ever had that where you like someone and you can't tell them? Oh, I mean, just... Can we talk about high school? Yeah. Yeah, school. Yeah, school. school school was big for that school and um but i just think wreck it i used to just tell them did you yeah and i was like deal with it like i can live i don't have you ever had it there's someone tells you that they like you and you just have to live with it have you had that i remember at school at school not as an adult yeah i mean yeah not as an adult but school it felt so crushing if someone didn't like you.

21I really like you. It's all right. It feels crushing if someone doesn't like you back now. It's like, okay. I feel like adulthood just you're like, okay. As soon as someone doesn't like you, you're like, oh, obviously I don't like you. Yeah. Yeah, it was a joke. I struggle finding out if someone like just on a friendship level maybe doesn't warm to me. yes real friends man how many of us you know the worst one is when you meet someone and you're like oh they're an op and no one else can see they're an op but you know they're an op when you say op do you mean like like a bastard yeah or like you'll meet someone and like it's not even that they treat you badly they just treat you a bit different to everyone and you're like oh you're a snake that's my like talent is spotting these people especially in our world I can see them a mile off a rat a rat is a rat do you know what I mean a rat is a rat a rat is a rat yeah I can tell do you find that sort of you know compared to Sugar Hut right there are more where are we going where are we going well I'm comparing I'm comparing sort of Hackney Socialite Life to Sugar Hut Life I'm asking are there more ops in these circles do you think like do you think basically the the clouter it gets the more cunts there are is what i'm saying yeah i yeah probably yeah i think so what do you think um well it's hard because i feel like the main thing about it is people might not like you but they'll pretend to like you in this thing like i feel like in like this industry i feel like you might get like people like you per se but they might not actually like you i do you know i do always think a lot of it leads back to insecurity though like when people are just not very nice i just think that maybe they're just in their heads and just having a bad day ate it up ate it up are you ready for the first one yeah how does one focus on themselves and stop comparing their lives to others don't ask me yeah delete instagram for uh like in your evenings i do that really take off your take off the app and get it back at 10 a.m yeah yeah yeah and the circle continues yeah literally deleting instagram really helps i've started muting people as well people even that are friends i'm just like you're doing really well i love you but i just can't see it anymore sorry because i need to like i've started muting i've started muting people that i think are like really amazing but um i just can't see it and then i've also started muting yeah i can't see it yeah i think you're really and then occasionally i go on their profile i like everything and be like oh my god you're doing amazingly but like i think when people are doing so amazingly and then you're reminded about every day you're like oh shit like you know i'm not in that cycle at the men god am i the insecure one no no no oh and then i've also start unmuting yeah and then i start unmuting um activists which is horrible no no i think it's bad no i've started no but like i think specifically trans activists i love you but i started muting them because every day you just you just reminded how bad it is so yeah so once you're friends who are activists like love their work and they're obviously amazing but sometimes i just don't want to click on their story and see like a tranny getting their head kicked in do you know what i mean yeah so i've had to mute activist which is peak but which i should just delete the app is that just muting everyone yeah but rose okay so you delete instagram once a day basically yeah and you and because i have friends that do that and they sort of say it there's like yeah i deleted instagram again and but you're speaking about it with a refreshing sense of shamelessness crucially yeah i mean we're all it's fine it's part of our routine really addicted yeah exactly let's be like i'm sure everyone in this room is yeah um yeah like um like my younger brothers it's snapchat they're just like on it all the time but it's crazy i think that's more like whatsapp isn't it like sue started using one called marco polo and we're just giving them free.

46Yeah, do you use Marco Polo? Oh. What is it? So it's like, it's like video messages like Snapchat, but you can join whilst they're sending you the message so it's like a live.

57Rose Gray:Okay. And then you then get in like a proper conversation. It feels very like to and from. Have they got money? Marco Polo? Yeah. I don't know. Maybe. I hope so. If you want them to sponsor this show. Yeah, I love it. No, no, no. Yeah, no. I use it. Only with a certain group of friends, but the ones that you wanted to be like yeah i just think it's um the stories element it's like the idea that you see things happening real time so you can just feel quite like left out whereas okay our parents or anyone that's not on socials that way doesn't when i'm on holiday i don't really go on social media and i don't think about anything i'm just i'm reading i'm yeah not getting caught up in what's going on god gosh we just need you need to go on holiday whoever wrote this yeah i don't think that was the best advice go on holiday and delete instagram go on holiday delete instagram um journaling journaling yeah affirmations talk to your friends about it and take pride in what you do yeah and know that you have to move your own pace and like yeah that person's really hot and they probably are better than you but like What are you going to do about it?

12There's not really much you can do. And it would just be easier and more fun to just... Yeah. Sorry, did I even talk to you? I don't think I'm there mentally to even give that advice yet. No, neither. That's another part of it. It's natural. It's very normal. Everyone's feeling it. Also, we're in a new moon today.

35Rose Gray:Today. Do you know what it's in? It's cancer and it's very emotional. Everyone's feeling very emotional They're making pretty snappy decisions We all need to just be kind to ourselves Do you want to do your spirit animal card Whilst you're here? Okay, let me grab one Speaking of a new moon You can't not do one What's your passcode? 0741 No, it's quite a powerful day today Yeah, emo Sorry babe Right, so you're going to have to shuffle of these. Me? Yeah. Yeah. Because it's got to come from your hands. And then you split it into three and then put it all on top of each other and then let's just get an animal card for the moon.

21I do tarot every day. Do you? In fact, we've moved on to these because I did angel cards because I'm too scared of tarot.

27Rose Gray:Don't be scared of tarot. But it's the same thing but tarot is like... It's just like, it means rebirth. Yeah. This is the thing. I was brought up on tarot and then I moved to angel because I like nicer things and then we've gotten into the animal spirit because it's more like... I heard that as then I moved to... Angel. Yeah. For nicer things. It's lovely up there, isn't it? Okay, so three. Yeah, and then you pile them back up, whichever way you please. And then you pick the top card and that's kind of like your new moon. Fish. Fish. And then, okay, great. Do you want me to read it out or do you want it for yourself?

04Is it quite long? No, no. So I do a lot of these like circles and then we always pick things and some of the women bless them. They like start to read it and it's like four pages of their... It's one page. Do you want me to read it to you? Yeah, yeah. Right, restlessness, change of focus, lost in the current. The fish loves to be subsumed in life's current. Nothing pleases it more than movement, movement and more movement. The roaming lifestyle of the fish may be exhilarating for a while, but usually leads to weariness and slippery situations. with all the possibility out there in vast waters the fish becomes lost without clear goals and intentions spend some time with the lunar forces gag it dear fish as the peace as the peace and calm of the moon will serve your soul when in balance adaptable and travels well when out of balance distracted changes mind often and to bring into balance set a small goal and accomplish it i really i really relate to that yeah because i've just been away for two weeks and i've never felt more relaxed in all my life and i had a week back in london last week and i'm just like floating i kind of forgot about my career no and then this week you know i've got shows this weekend i'm back i'm going to la i'm writing like i'm back on it and i'm like i literally do feel like a fish looks like bopping out of water swimming the wrong way i need to just get back into get back into the flow yeah turn around fish do you know what i mean if there's a song on your next album called turn around fish and it's quite that that was quite a goal oriented tarot card reading spirit card yeah i mean they usually all are yeah anyway are you a goal i'm a capricorn oh business bitch yeah she's creepy wake it up

49Rose Gray:business bitch what are you guys I'm Sagittarius very similar to very similar to Capricorn but my rising or the one that you appear as is Capricorn so I get Capricorn oh nice my sister's Leo Leo rising Sophie what are you I'm a Taurus oh my mum's a Taurus which to be honest I only ever hear like sort of bad things about no they're grounded now they're quite emotional very emotional yeah do you love the way things look do you love like little bits and bobs candles and little trinkets hygiene hygiene do I love the thing way things look I guess Taurus is meant to just be very like aesthetic okay like they take pictures no I'm a very deep thinker eggs in the morning I'm a very deep thinker I don't take things at surface level okay yeah no I think sure why not yeah okay okay great okay cool what this the green one the green one okay so it's in two parts what would you do if you found out your 47 year old boyfriend was in a relationship with another woman the whole time brackets he said he's changed he's an ex-com okay this is not good so how long have they been together I don't think it says we don't know and we don't know her age but we're assuming that if she listens to the straight diva the podcast she's like 20 she's not over the age of 30 this is not great i think she should get out yeah yeah ex-con what level of what yeah what level of crime are you safe to get out make sure you're safe to get out i suppose i don't i don't like him base base level if uh if you're with anyone and they were in a relationship the whole time probably probably end it gone 47 and ex-con he might be working on himself regardless let's take the conviction out of it Naomi right?
