In short

Stylish episode covers (1) Bailey Smith’s “dating saga” and outfit repeating on TikTok, and (2) Brittany Saunders’ clapback to fat-phobic mockery of her brand Fate the Label, alongside broader “skinny culture”/GLP-1 discourse.

Guests

Madison Sullivan Thorpe (host), Joanna Fleming, Rianne and Joyce (co-hosts).

Key claims

Bailey Smith (Geelong AFL player, ~420k+ followers, brand-deal heavy) was photographed with Talia, then Mia posted she was in the same outfit hours earlier; hosts discuss whether it’s a Tinder marketing stunt, noting Bailey previously worked with Tinder. They also argue Brittany’s response flips rage-bait into brand advocacy, defending customers and calling out fat phobia.

Notable examples

Fate store mannequins mocked by creator Taz; skinny-waist “snatch waist”/overseas procedure chatter; references to Ariana Grande and GLP-1/peptide beauty discussions; examples of brands using controversy (Ryanair, Rachel Wild, Volkswagen Beetle campaign).

0:06Brittney Saunders:This episode of Stylish is brought to you by the Volvo EX30. Small in size but big on style, storage and safety. It's the fully electric SUV designed for everyday life.

0:24Brittney Saunders:hello happy wednesday this is stylish the podcast for all things fashion brand lifestyle and beauty my name is madison sullivan thorpe i am joined by joanna fleming and rianne and joyce hello hey she's back i am back intro is back too well funny that

0:41Bailey Smith:we were having a conversation off mic mads is not happy about the last few weeks we've just been diving straight into the episode. We just thought we'd try something different. Don't say it like that. We've done that as well. I'm not a hater.

0:53Brittney Saunders:You literally said you hated it. Yes. I do. You know what? I do. I'll say it. I said what I said. I'll say it with my chest. I do hate it. I like an intro. Sue me. I like having a system and a format. Isn't the music enough? Nah. Nah, okay. You want the full like, this is who we are. This is what we stand for. I like just the random launch into the chat. Yeah, same.

1:14Bailey Smith:Speaking of, what's your random launch today. What have you got for me? Apparently my outfit's giving Harry Potter vibes. It is giving a little bit of Professor Quirrell? Quirrell. Yeah.

1:24Brittney Saunders:So before I get totally shat on for one, hating the fact we missed the intro and that you've been dubbed Professor Quirrell, I didn't say that about the coat. That was Joanne Affleck. Wait, can I just

1:33Bailey Smith:say, you walked in, I said, love the coat. Thank you. We both do. It suits you so much. It brings out your eyes. And then you put the scarf around the neck. I said, ooh, a A little bit of Quirrell going on. Yeah, obviously visual description needed. Big oversized dark grey charcoal sort of coat. I wouldn't say it's charcoal. What is it? Just dark grey? Yeah, I'd say charcoal. Okay, cool. I've got a big dramatic scarf that flies over the top, which is what is giving the Quirrell vibes. Yeah.

1:58Brittney Saunders:I think the minute you just said fly as well, I'm like,

2:00Bailey Smith:oh yeah, I really flicked it over my shoulder. Like there was drama. She's going to Quidditch practice after this. Do you guys know I would fucking eat up at Quidditch?

2:09Brittney Saunders:You actually would.

2:10Bailey Smith:I would be so good at Quidditch. I really would.

2:12Brittney Saunders:I would be so good. You know those TikToks about, like, my toxic trade is I watch, like, the Olympics and go, I'd be all right at this. I imagine you do that a lot. Yeah.

2:22Bailey Smith:So if you're Quirrell, who imagine I? Ooh. Okay, right now you're actually giving buck beat in that.

2:34I was not expecting that.

2:39Bailey Smith:I thought we were maybe going through personas. Oh, I'm sorry. I thought the outfit inspired the character. And you're giving Rowena, no, not Rowena, what's her name? Rowena Ravenclaw? Oh, I'll say that. Do you know who that is? Yeah. I don't know if that's her name, but that's it. Okay, move on. I just offended Jo.

2:54Brittney Saunders:No, I'm not offended. I thought if we were doing personality, I was like, here we go. Hermione Granger for sure. Oh, God. I thought you were going to be Hermione. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. She wants to be Hermione. I thought you were going to say me. I don't know it's a compliment. I've just got it a few times. I used to get it in high school. because I'm... Oh, yeah, you so were. Anyway,

3:13Bailey Smith:swap time or do we talk about what's on the episode today, Mads? You tell me.

3:16Brittney Saunders:Oh, God, I sound like the, like, structure witch. I'm not Wingardium Leviosa. All right, all right.

3:24Bailey Smith:Let's do the swap. All right, great. You go first. Okay. We've been missing for a couple of weeks.

3:29Brittney Saunders:Yeah, please don't put a missing person file out. I did. This was a well-intended break. Okay, so you know those sticky phone cases that girls use to get, like, their pic or, like, their video?

3:39Bailey Smith:Are you personally attacking me?

3:40Brittney Saunders:Me too. They've both got one. I love you both dearly. I've literally got it on the back of my phone right now. But you both know how overstimulated I get when you put your phone sticky side down and wear somewhere and you pick it up and it's like. And I'm like. Should I try and do a little bit of audio for the people that don't know the sound? Ready? Oh, my God. Like literally that sound is deprived, like derived from the gates of hell. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. Anyway, the amount of times like I've been out with either of you and been like. Please put your phone front facing down. Anyway, I was like, no, but I want to film my outfits, but I don't want to get one of those annoying sticky cases.

4:16Brittney Saunders:So there's one that you can get on Amazon. We'll link it in the show notes. But it's magnetic to the back of your iPhone so you can take it off. And, you know, then you don't have to, like, be in a professional setting with, like, your sticky case on.

4:28Bailey Smith:I will double down on this wreck. I just bought it. So Maddie had it on the weekend. So it's literally a magnetic. It's a magnet on the back. Hang on, show me. I want to see that it actually sticks. Here's one I put that earlier. Only flag, it doesn't stick through a case like mine. So I have like a silicone case. I have to take my phone off and stick it on. See, that's annoying.

4:45Brittney Saunders:No, not to upsell and not at all sponsored by this brand. A Lego is the brand. So my silicone case is by them and they also make this. Oh. That's where they got us. Okay, sold. They match the case to the thing.

4:59Bailey Smith:Okay, so I bought the really cheap silicone one. This was really cheap. Can I get a feel for how much it sticks on? Because I don't want it to slide off the mirror. It doesn't. Okay, well, I put it in my lift and it doesn't go.

5:08Brittney Saunders:Oh, okay. I trust you. The nerves I feel on those minimal floors that I go down every morning filming, I'm like, oh my God, one elderly neighbour away from deep rooted shame. Jo, what have you got for us?

5:21Bailey Smith:Mine's actually one that I recently started using again, because in the lead up to my wedding, I had some whitening trays made just with my dentist. And I really recommend doing this instead of using the strips. I feel like you get a much better result over time. So I just did like my first one again last night after like a very, very long break. And I use the Zoom whitening like gel. Yep. And you just put it in the pre-made trays. It is a really easy way to whiten your teeth without needing to constantly buy strips. You just get the little gels. And I feel like it lasts way longer. Yeah. And it's a bit of a one and done, right?

5:54Bailey Smith:Yeah. And I think it's also like a lot more potent. Yeah. The potency is definitely stronger. Yeah. And you don't get the sensitivity of in-chair. That's the thing that I wanted to mention is that I've had in-chair whitening a number of times and my teeth are way too sensitive for it. So if you've tried that before and you're like, nah, cannot do that again, but you want the results of in-chair whitening, then I'd say get the trays.

6:13Brittney Saunders:It's like you breathe in cold air and you're like. Yes. Yeah.

6:16Bailey Smith:Yeah. You can't drink tea because it's like, oh. Yeah. I don't like it. Yeah. We've all just gone like. Cut that. It's a social clip. Riri? Product for me this week because I banned accounts to wreck. I'm back on my foundation game. I'm using the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation, mostly off the back of my trip overseas because when I went to the wedding, had a few events after, and I was like, okay, I need like heavy duty foundation in this weather. And my good friend, Cartier, who's a makeup artist, recommended this one. So I knew it was good. And I'm obsessed with it.

6:51Brittney Saunders:I'll vouch for that, Rick. It got a reformulation. They did reformulate it. Everyone on the internet like kind of hated it for a little while. I'm obsessed with the new formula. If you are slightly oily, it is a great foundation.

7:02Bailey Smith:Yeah. That's me. I didn't know what the original one was like, so I have no baseline to compare, but I'm really enjoying the new formula. It is a cult classic. Okay. Yeah. It's a long-term favourite of a lot of makeup artists. All right. Today we're going to be talking about the Bailey Smith dating saga, which we've all seen on TikTok, I'm sure, but specifically his outfit repeating. I cannot wait to get into that. We're also going to be talking about Brittany Saunders' TikTok. I'm not sure if you guys have seen this, but there's a lot of it focusing on the business of being skinny, but we'll get into that right after a word from today's sponsor.

7:32Brittney Saunders:This episode of Stylish is brought to you by the Volvo EX30. Small in size, but big on style, storage and safety. It's the fully electric SUV designed for everyday life. I feel like one of the biggest luxuries these days is when something in your life just works. It doesn't ask for your attention. It just quietly makes your day a little bit easier. And I think that's exactly the appeal of the Volvo EX30. It's a small, fully electric SUV, but it somehow manages to fit everything you actually need. Whether it's your work bag, Pilates gear, a grocery run you weren't planning on, or the oversized tote that's permanently living in the boot.

8:11Brittney Saunders:It's proof that compact doesn't have to mean compromising. It also makes everyday driving feel surprisingly calm. It's quiet, intuitive and effortless to drive, which honestly feels like a bit of a reset in the middle of a busy day. And because it's a Volvo, you get that incredible sense of confidence that comes from a brand that's been redefining car safety for almost 100 years. Experience the Volvo EX30 from just 55 ,990 drive away. Visit your local Volvo retailer to test drive the EX30 today and thank you so much to Volvo Cars for making this episode as stylish possible. So, unless you've been living under a rock this week, you may have seen that Bailey Smith got caught a little red-handed, some might say.

8:54Brittney Saunders:Should we recap who Bailey Smith is? Yeah. Look, Bailey Smith probably, I'd say, the poster child of hot in the AFL. Oh, okay. Well, this is a podcast for women, largely. What do you want me to say? Like he averages 26 touches and like two goals? Like no one gives a shit.

9:10Bailey Smith:What team does he play for? Geelong. Okay. I was about to say the Bulldogs, but yeah. Go to the kitty cats. If you're an international listener, you definitely don't know who Bailey Smith is. And you definitely don't know what the AFL is. So the AFL is like the main sporting league. It's Australian football rules. Baylor Smith, to Mads Point, is like the poster boy of hot. Everyone is pretty obsessed with him. He's got a lot of brand deals. He's got a very prolific profile on social media.

9:34Brittney Saunders:I would suspect he's making more off the field in brand deals than he's making on the field as a footballer. And he's probably like one of the top 10, 15 paid footballers in the league.

9:42Bailey Smith:And I think he's the most followed as well. He's got like 420 ,000 followers or something. Same. But I'm glad you mentioned the partnerships though,

9:51Brittney Saunders:because this really ties into this conversation. So basically what happened with Bailey, as we've mentioned, a young footballer, I think he's in his mid to late 20s, he was photographed with a woman named Talia who posted a TikTok claiming she was dating Bailey. And I saw this video very early on because a lot of the comments initially were like, was waiting for this, so glad cat's out of the bag. And then it quickly turned. They were like, girl, when was this? Wait, when was this? And I was like, oh, no, I think I've seen this film before. in the AFL world and I didn't like the ending. Spoiler.

10:24Brittney Saunders:So then Talia uploads another one with the caption when he's planning his future with you and 400 other girls. Then Mia jumps in the chat. Mia enters the chat. Mia enters the chat and Mia posts claiming she was posing with him at the exact same time in the exact same outfit he'd been in with Talia just hours earlier. And this is where it went like bang because the internet saw it

10:47Bailey Smith:and they ran with it. There were like thousands of comments that fluttered in. Some think it's a dating scandal for the ages. And I think it's really important to clock that Bailey has worked with Tinder in the past. And he has done this little strategic breadcrumb tactic, famously with Tammy Hemmerow. Do we remember that ad?

11:05Brittney Saunders:How could we miss the pap shots or the ad? But a lot of people were quick to be like, wait, was this the same day? Is Bailey outfit repeating on the date? Then a lot of people were like, is this AI? Is this a marketing stunt? I think a lot of the girls who were in the photos sort of came to the party going, no, I didn't AI this. And unfortunately, this is not a marketing stunt. What did we think of it all?

11:27Bailey Smith:Well, I want to focus on the outfit repeating piece. That was kind of iconic. If this is Bailey's go-to dating outfit, I like tip my hat to him where he's just like, you know what? I just want to be confident. I want to feel good. I'm just going to wear the same thing. Play on. If he was double dating on the same day, I'm like, I don't know about that. Also, those particular photos, I believe, are from a hotel in Sydney. But if he plays for Geelong, then he would have been at an away game or away for the weekend. So he would have only had a few things packed. So he maybe didn't have the choice of his whole wardrobe.

12:00Bailey Smith:It's giving regular crime podcast listeners details. Devil is in the details. She's like, I'm going to go one step further. I am not convinced that this is not an ad for Tinder. Me too. Because Mia and Talia are both like influencers and models. So I'm like, have they also been contracted by Tinder to play into this entire campaign? Because Bailey then followed up posting on his story like date night wrecks. And then he was sharing responses to that. Like he was taking the piss out of it. So he clearly wasn't taking it that seriously. If you were dating someone and you cheated on them and got caught out, would you be taking it that lighthearted?

12:34Bailey Smith:I don't know. Yeah, I think he's king of leaning in. But the Tinder thing is on my mind. Like that OG Tinder ad and everyone was speculating. I'm like, this does feel very similar.

12:45Brittney Saunders:My hunch is it wasn't. But if I was in his team, I would have had Tinder on the phone within the hour and probably Freedom Furniture and said, let's do something with a mirror. I've got a concept. You know, like I would have called them both and gone, how much cash have you got in your FY27 marketing budget?

13:02Bailey Smith:So all of this got us thinking about our date night outfits, naturally. Our go-tos. What was my go-to dating outfit when I was single? Like, did I do a Bailey and rinse and repeat? With a trucker cap and a big ballooning spray jacket? No, I definitely opted for something that was a little bit more structured and a bit more timeless. But I'm never going to hate on someone if that's what they feel most comfortable in. Did you guys have like a go-to dating outfit that you wore? I don't think I have a specific dating outfit. I can't think of one that I specifically always went for, but I definitely leant into jeans and a nice top a lot.

13:37Bailey Smith:Yeah. Like maybe a slightly sexy top, which I think you would agree with, Rae. And actually you, Mads, as well. Big, big fan of the sexy top. Jeans, I would not. And this is like maybe TMI. Wait, what would you wear with the sexy top? I would always wear like a matching set. So like a sexy top with like a cargo pant or something that was a little bit like a silk pant or something. It was a bit more comfortable. Okay. Literally. I'm a bit KP sometimes with what I wear. But jeans, really hard to get off, doll. Oh! Oh! Wowie! I don't know if that's too far, but I'm like, oh, I don't know about that.

14:12Bailey Smith:I don't want to do the little kick at the end. You guys know what I'm talking about. You know what I'm talking about. It's an ick. I love the listens. It's an ick. It's an ick.

14:23Brittney Saunders:Okay. Mum, just know I wear jeans on every day. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm glad I said that now. Yeah. So no jeans to me, but sexy top all the way, Mads. I wonder you were going in an elasticated cargo pad. I, my girlfriend Beck gave me this advice because I used to really, I'm an hour about what to wear on a date. She was like, it's the girlfriend outfit. It's like a cute little white tank with a little bra or bralette with a pair of jeans. Like that's what you wear when you're going on a date, when you're like actually dating someone. She's like, it's a boot or it's like a little heel. You've got like a cute little leather jacket or a blazer over the top.

14:57Brittney Saunders:I was like, oh my God. Tick, tick, tick. It's effortless. Kind of reminds me of Kendall Jenner vibes.

15:02Bailey Smith:Yeah.

15:03Brittney Saunders:Yeah. Shame about the fact I'm not like 6 '3", built like I'm, you know, built like, I don't even know what she's built like.

15:10Bailey Smith:Yeah, and you know her baby tee is like the row or something.

15:13Brittney Saunders:I've got like my little cotton on baby tee. I don't think I've worn a baby tee on a date ever. I usually do a tank with like a cute little bra.

15:20Bailey Smith:I want to know, Jo, since you've got married, has your outfit for like your routine date night, has it changed? No. Yeah. Not at all. Yeah, I'm still wearing the same shit. But on my second date with Adrienne, I wore this like short red dress. Yes. I remember you telling us this. It was in one of my Hinge photos as well. So I met Adrian on Hinge. Not sponsored. I wish it would be. But it was like this short little cook-eye dress and it was in my Hinge photo and he recalled seeing that photo and then I wore it to the second date and he was like obsessed with me after that. So you locked him down.

15:51Bailey Smith:I remember this story. He like had love hearts in his eyes. It was the emoji, like a little cartoon. Like when Bugs Bunny sees Lola. I want to know what the boys wear. Like, what's their go-to? Bailey obviously has his tracksuit. I asked Adrian last night. What would you normally wear on a date? And who was she?

16:15Bailey Smith:And he said he always used to wear a shirt out of, like, a respectful thing. Like, he wanted to look like he was making an effort, so he would wear a button-up shirt. Do you remember when you were dating, like, any of his outfits? Yeah, I remember heaps of them. Okay. Yeah, I hated a lot of them. That's right. Yes.

16:31Brittney Saunders:Will you not forget that we did an entire, like, on how she, like, transformed Ado to Adrian?

16:37Bailey Smith:See, I was very attracted to Louis because he dressed really well. Yeah, okay. Famously thinks he dresses better than me. Yeah. He does have very good style. Oh, I thought you were going to. He has good style. I was like, you already offended the coat. No, no, no, no, no, no. Also wanted a second opinion from my brother. Yes. Great. Very fashionable man. Bit of background. We didn't just like nepo baby this shit or nepo brother this stuff. I will be like, what do you call it when he's like nepo brother? Nepo brother. Like nepotism, it's not just on the pod because he's my brother. I will hand on heart say objectively, and Jo, you were about to say it before I went off a weird nepo tangent.

17:13Bailey Smith:Yeah. He is one of the most like stylish men I know and very, very like eclectic with his personal style. So I really wanted his opinion on how he got date ready. Mats, you want to push the button so we can hear from you? Our friend Dan. Let's go.

17:25Brittney Saunders:What I like to wear on a first date, so first of all, if it's summer, I really love to go with a navy button shirt and pants, particularly linen with some nice white sneakers.

17:34Bailey Smith:In winter, I will always go with layers, so coat, sweater, and just a t-shirt underneath just in case you don't get hot inside and things like that. A pair of jeans or nice slacks. A finishing touch with that would be some boots or some nice loafers or any kind of leather shoe you like. With both outfits, accessories are very important to me, so a nice watch can be any brand, doesn't matter, just looks nice. and some rings to finish, but don't go too heavy on the rings. I think two or three is enough. But if you don't like jewelry, that's fine as well.

18:02Brittney Saunders:Oh, bless. Okay. Do you know what? I love that he said slacks. I don't think I've heard slacks since my daughter died.

18:08Bailey Smith:He's really thought about the full look, and I love that he went for two seasonal options. Yeah. I want to talk about the rings for a second because my brother loves to accessorize, but I think this is something that some people might be put off when they would first meet him because he wears man bags and wears quite a lot of rings, so I thought it was quite interesting that he was like, oh, maybe pair back on the rings. Two or three is fine.

18:27Brittney Saunders:Not on every hand, every finger. I'm like imagining like those NFL players that have been in like eight circles.

18:34Bailey Smith:But I'm glad he sprinkled in a bit of his personality with the accessories because that's something I feel like he's known for. Also, I think if you're like quite proud of your style and you do like to accessorise, why would you dull that down for a date? Like you don't want to then bring that out on date four and be like, surprise, I love rings. Gotcha. And his girlfriend, Emma, also said to me when they first met, one of the things that he loved, she loved most about him was his personal style and the fact that he really cared and invested in what he looked like. So I'm like, investing in your personal style and taking pride in what you're wearing and not shying away from, you know, having a bit of fun.

19:07Bailey Smith:Yeah. Like Dan can actually, you know, land you with your friend. One of my friends said something really funny. I voice noted her and she's currently like in the dating game. And I was like, just a question, because she, I would say, has a very particular style. And I was like, what do you normally wear for a first date? She sent me a two and a half minute voice note. And essentially she said like she has a date formula for dates that are just a standard run-of-the-mill date. But if she thinks that it's a potential husband, she'll wear something entirely outside of her normal dress that she would wear.

19:35Bailey Smith:She's got one for winter, one for summer. So she's got a little red dress too. I think. Well, she gets told she looks like Miss Honey from Matilda. Oh. Yeah, so she leans into like the sexy. Yeah. Like milk your. Yeah.

19:47Brittney Saunders:A little bit. Every time I've said red dress, all I have is that Jonas brother like Nick Jonas, red dress. I don't know what that is. What? Sorry. High heels, red dress.

19:58Bailey Smith:Is it Camp Rock?

19:59Brittney Saunders:All by yourself.

20:01Bailey Smith:Gotta catch my breath. We'll never find out. What's my red dress? My red dress is a black St. Agni top that's completely backless. I've worn this a few times. That one's sexy. I also have tattoos and you can only see like half of one of my tattoos, which is like also a little bit like a wink wink. I don't feel like I've ever seen your tattoos. Yeah, I've got two. Are they all hidden? Yeah, pretty much. Okay. Do you think mine's the lacy bra and the P.

20:22Brittney Saunders:Johnson top? 1000%. Yeah. 1000%. Just wanted to check. Which P. Johnson top? The black sheer one.

20:27Bailey Smith:The sheer one. Oh, yeah. And she wears a sexy bra underneath.

20:30Brittney Saunders:Also comes in a blue. Yes. Gorge. I had a male friend, though, say to me, I know if you give a shit about a date because you'll blow away with your hair and wear it out. And I was like, got me. Damn it. Yeah. It's a slick bun. I'm like, oh, it's going nowhere fast. Ouch. I hope no one's going on a date with you. Here's this. Have to go on a date to actually do the hair. So.

20:49Bailey Smith:You go on dates? Yuck, you're young?

20:51Brittney Saunders:I'm so young. To use her own words against her. I've been on a small sabbatical. I'm back. Oh, four, one.

21:01Bailey Smith:All right, next up, Brittany Saunders has clapped back at a creator for mocking her brand fate, but we'll chat about that right afterward from today's sponsor.

21:07Brittney Saunders:There's something really satisfying about a car that's designed around how you actually live. The Volvo EX30 is a small, fully electric SUV that's big on style, smart storage, and everyday practicality. It delivers the quiet, effortless drive you'd expect from an electric vehicle, along with the safety Volvo is known for. Visit your local Volvo retailer to experience the EX30 and thank you so much to Volvo Cars for making this episode of Stylish possible. Look, before we get into this segment, we do want to say that we will be discussing women's bodies and we understand that that can be really sensitive for people for a triage of reasons.

21:43Brittney Saunders:And so we do just want to give that warning before we get into it. We have an endless amount of resources to support in our show notes if you do feel that you need support during this time.

21:52Bailey Smith:So Brittany Saunders, who's the founder of Fate the Label, we've actually hosted her on the podcast before. So our audience is likely quite familiar. Brittany is a very well-known Aussie entrepreneur. She's a content creator and a founder, but she is most known for starting inclusive brand Fate the Label. It's spelt F-A-Y-T. And I do think that's a really important distinction for us to call out. They are a women's fashion brand and they actually size, their size range is between six all the way through to 26. So I would say it's one of the most inclusive Australian fashion brands that we know.

22:22Bailey Smith:Brittany's also been a huge advocate for inclusivity and making sure that, you know, all people can shop together. And when we did our interview with Brittany, oh God, ages ago, was it you, Matt?

22:32Brittney Saunders:Yeah, I think it honestly may have been the third or fourth ever episode we did of Stylish in terms of interview format. It was really early on.

22:39Bailey Smith:Really early on, but Britney's also been a very strong advocate that you can make affordable fashion that is also size inclusive. So she's done a great deal of work in this space. So Britney's vision for Fate has always been to create a place where women aren't separated into different collections because of their size. Most recently, she's clapped back at a TikTok by creator Taz for mocking her store's name and making a fat phobic joke. If you haven't seen this, the original creator Taz made a post videoing the Fate store mannequins in Queensland, I believe, captioned, who would call a plus size store fat?

23:12Bailey Smith:Before we get into the discussion, we do think it's really important to play some of that TikTok. So Mads, I'm going to get you to just jump over and hit that button. So shout out to Taz. She walked past my store and she took a video of our mannequins in the window and said, who would make a plus size label and call it fat? My business is called Fate. She very quickly deleted her TikTok, but then posted on her story, Fat, Fate, Fate, Fatty. I thought it was funny. Only fatties taking offense. This actually isn't about my business name. It's about what's wrong with society and having a problem with people that have bigger bodies.

23:51Bailey Smith:The reason that Fate exists as a brand is because we want to create a space where women can come and shop together. So Brittany actually used the caption to call out the user, but she also used it to promote her store location. So she's very much leveraged this moment of negativity as a way, like flipped it on its head, really. And look, I would say that the support flooded in. There were so many comments with many users saying that they were previously unaware of fate and their brand ethics, but now will be sure to shop them. Brittany's TikTok also called out the biggest social issue being fat phobia.

24:22Bailey Smith:People taking issue with people with bigger bodies and the separation of women who are smaller and bigger in sizes. So this discourse isn't only just reserved for TikTok. We are seeing it in mainstream media. We've spoken at length about the resurgence of skinny culture, particularly driven by GLP-1s and Pep Dives. We've done a whole Friday episode on that.

24:38Brittney Saunders:And look, more recently, Ariana Grande, who's been on my feed a lot, and I think, you know, an obviously shrinking frame and a lot of concern from fans and people online about her health.

24:50Bailey Smith:For me, it feels like it's coming at all angles. It's not just big celebrities and TikTok. I'm also seeing this huge skinny waist. or what is it, the snatch waste job.

24:58Brittney Saunders:So I hadn't heard about this until you guys were telling me about it, which I'm like, thank you, algorithm, you've got my back.

25:06Bailey Smith:So Bec Zachariah from MAPS, I think that was last season of MAPS, she went over there and then also an influencer called Matilda Baxter went over there as well and I think they were over there at a similar time. But this is like medical tourism at its finest, but they're allowed to promote the procedure because they're overseas having it done. If this was in Australia, like we strictly cannot do this in Australia, promote a cosmetic procedure or like medical procedure of any kind, because that would be a major breach of ARPRA. ARPRA is the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Right.

25:39Bailey Smith:So they're like the government body that makes sure people aren't doing advertising for procedures that they shouldn't. Exactly. Okay. Exactly right. Yeah. So both of those influences went over there. I think Beck started to actually get some heat on her socials when she was posting that she had arrived there to consider the procedure. And in response to that, she was like, oh, no, no, no. I haven't decided I'm getting it done yet. I'm just here to explore it and have a consultation. And she did end up having it done and then shared her experience. There's just so much. We've just listed off like three or four things that have really, you know, searched this whole skinny trend.

26:11Bailey Smith:What did you guys think about Brittany's approach to this video that was created? I'm glad that she was able to spin it into a positive thing for her business and maybe making more people aware of her brand because I think that's helpful in a way. It just feels like a lot of this content on TikTok that's ignorant and problematic and negative is just really overwhelming my algorithm at the moment. I feel like content that is negative and nasty is really just taking precedent over things that are more positive. It feels like, Jo, the algorithm is rewarding people for being controversial. Exactly.

26:48Bailey Smith:And I don't know and I can't say that there are metrics to prove this, but that is definitely how I feel when I open my feed. And it feels like people like this who are rage baiting, she knew what she was doing. I don't think for a second that this was as like innocent as what it was paid up. I don't get why people do this though. Like what do you gain out of rage baiting people into engagement farming? I think people honestly are looking at ways to bring people to their profile and they know the algorithm is going to reward them for being negative or talking about someone who has a profile like Brittany, who stands for something and has like a very values-led brand, trying to undermine that will bring people to your page and bring commentary.

27:25Bailey Smith:Bizarre behaviour. It might be negative, but some people just value clout.

27:29Brittney Saunders:For some people, any publicity is good publicity. Any view is a view. It doesn't matter whether the comment section is negative or surging. I think they're just happy to have the views. I loved Brittany's response and I loved it for so many reasons. I loved it because it was really quick, like it was speedy and that's the benefit of her being the brand founder, right? She got to be front facing as quickly as she wanted to be. But I also loved that ultimately she was there to defend her customer because not only was her brand under attack, anyone who shops that brand, the comment, this is a brand for fatties.

28:00Brittney Saunders:I mean, ultimately, it's just a cruel and crude thing to say. And it's offensive to Britney, who's made the brand and named the brand and offered this sizing. But it's also incredibly awful to her customers who are shopping and feeling wonderful in this space. and it kind of put them under siege because it's like everything that fate stands for was being attacked by this creator and I love that she went in with the receipts of the fact she's been doing this for nine years and really went into bat for not only her brand but more importantly her customers and what she stands for for them.

28:34Bailey Smith:I think I'm just I'm honestly guys I'm just so overwhelmed about how much I'm seeing people shrink on the internet and I know I'm not alone in this because Britney's sentiment is really echoing that people were feeling pressure. I've also seen a number of other creators who have pretty big profiles like Gemma Diamond, Sofa Dofer, who have gotten onto the app and have done a piece to camera to be like, hey, guys, I just want to remind you that you're probably seeing this too. And you don't need to do this.

28:59Brittney Saunders:I think as well, like it's so hard to not become what you consume. And I think that everyone, ultimately, we want to feel like individuals. We want to feel like we have this really singular, unique way of thinking. but the reality is you get served something enough, it kind of comes into your repertoire and your mindset. I could not believe how quickly my algorithm retrained when we first did that peptides episode re. Naturally, I was trying to find myself on that side of the internet so that I was informed about what a consumer was seeing about this unregulated illegal peptide market and so quickly was getting all of these videos about if you feel fat in your genes, you are fat in your genes, then getting the next girl telling me what peptides I should be using.

29:40Brittney Saunders:I probably spent two to three days having to hold down multiple videos, not interested, not interested, irrelevant, dangerous, irrelevant, dangerous. Yeah. Because I just couldn't believe in like a 48 hour period of researching what I was being served, encouraging me to shrink my frame.

29:55Bailey Smith:Yeah. I'm really glad you brought this up, Mads, around the social pressure that you're seeing in terms of the feed serving you content. I know we've spoken about this before and I've said it on the podcast in the past, but I think in the context of this conversation, it's really important for me to reiterate that GLP-1 medications are transforming health outcomes for many people, particularly people living with obesity and metabolic disease. That benefit is really well established. What's not well established is the use of GLP-1s and peptides for beauty. And I wanted to bring this up because I did see a study that analyzed more than 46 ,000 Reddit discussions.

30:28Bailey Smith:And the main center of that discussion was not the use of GLP-1 for medical reasons. It was for beauty standards. So what it actually discussed was actually through the lens of cosmetic weight loss rather than their clinical use, which for me just signals such a scary spike in not just consideration, but also curiosity about how people can take this drug to shrink themselves. Even if you are one of the most discerning, intelligent, critical thinking people, you are constantly exposed to your point as your subconscious over time will adapt and evolve to sees this as a standard of beauty. Yeah. Like you, I have to sit there and ask myself and say to myself, why do I feel pressure to get something done is what I'm consuming.

31:10Bailey Smith:And I feel like I'm constantly doing that day to day and it's still infiltrating my brain.

31:15Brittney Saunders:Yeah. And I think to assume that you can critically evaluate everything you consume or everything you continually see is just incorrect. Like the brain gets tired. It can't do that for everything.

31:25Bailey Smith:I don't think it's fair to like demonize the people that are also potentially struggling with their body image or eating disorders and kind of they're thrown into this conversation. Like they may not be promoting GLP-1s or peptides or anything, but they may be struggling in another way. And they are existing in the same time that we are right now in this skinny epidemic. And we as a generation have all been through this before. Like we went through the 90s, we went through the early noughties where, you know, heroin chic was in. And we've also come out the other side of that and swung into an entirely different beauty standard.

31:57Bailey Smith:and inevitably in our lifetime, we're going to go back the other way as well. And it might be a quicker trend cycle. But I think for us as a generation, like you were able to avoid some of that content previously because we didn't have social media. So when you were absorbing this stuff, it was magazines, it was maybe TV shows. It wasn't in your face 24 seven when you're on your phone. So I think we're just being exposed to it a hell of a lot more now. And as a result, it's just infiltrating our lives very, very quickly. It's like, it's almost like just been this year, I feel like it's really just infiltrating so much.

32:29Bailey Smith:Whereas previously, I feel like that trend cycle has been a lot more gradual and incremental.

32:34Brittney Saunders:I think that is so succinct, Jo. And I think as well, where we're consuming it now is not just celebrities in glossy magazines or on TV shows. It's people you're walking past in the coffee shop. You know, even if you delete the TikTok app, even if you're not on Instagram, you can't help but notice it in the world around you. and I think for me like I read a comment the other day that said I'm way too fucking millennial to be seeing this again and I was like oh my god we did this as teenagers. I do not envy the young girls in my life and how they are growing up right now and I am genuinely scared.

33:07Brittney Saunders:I went to an all-girls high school. I have seen more than enough young women struggle with their body image and the relationship. I cannot imagine being on TikTok and Snapchat now.

33:17Bailey Smith:And my question is like as beauty standards constantly evolve, how do we create better tools for ourself to navigate these shifts in beauty standards? Like especially for future generations, how do we deal with this in future so that we don't get so consumed by it? This is why policy regulations are coming in around the use of social media though. Like I feel there is an onus on government and also the people who own these apps. Like TikTok and Meta have more of a responsibility and Reddit to be able to, you know, filter out a lot of this information, but also provide warnings. You know, if the 46 ,000 people contributing to a Reddit discussion, what health messaging and warning is coming up with that?

33:55Bailey Smith:What caveats are coming up to, you know, safeguard that the person who's consuming this is understanding that this isn't medical advice. Why is that onus solely falling on us as individuals? It feels a bit unfair. Interestingly, I've seen a bit of work from Chanel Contos, who's also been doing some advocacy to change policy around algorithms being something that you have to opt into, not just be served. We'll link some info about that in the show notes because it's really interesting. Sorry for the tone shit, but I do, before we wrap up, I do want to talk about how outrage has become advertising for business and creators.

34:28Bailey Smith:I think to your point, Mads, Brittany's done an incredible job at nailing the tone of her video. Have you guys seen any other examples of when creators or even businesses have done this? Like we've seen negativity and use it as a way to, you know, create a marketing moment. Another founder one that popped into my timeline was Rachel Wild, the founder of the Breakout Hack and Booth Hair Care. Notably, the Gen Z boss in a mini went so viral and was quite, you know, negative. She ended up on the wrong side of X, which is never a nice place to be. No, you don't want to be there. No, no, no, no. You do not want to be there.

34:58Bailey Smith:But then she was able to, you know, reverse engineer it and use it as a promotional package for her Breakout Hack range. Yeah, she ended up in like mainstream media. Yeah. Yeah.

35:06Brittney Saunders:So, you know, really flipped that one on its heads. Another one that I love in very similar vein is Ryanair, who I feel like's entire TikTok is just dedicated to basically leaning into all the ways people shit on them for being the world's worst airline. I'm like they're not here being like we are premium first class travel. They are like you can get a nine euro flight and it will cost you your dignity. But I love that they kind of lean in. I think, you know, the other ones that probably lean into controversy but feel a little more faceless are like Lululemon, Diesel, The Real Real, who all kind of played into the dupe culture and the ripoff culture of, you know, their pieces.

35:46Brittney Saunders:Rhi and I covered the Lululemon one where they were like, bring in your Amazon, you know, ripoffs and we'll replace them with The Real thing. The Real Real did a pop up on Canal Street in New York. So did Diesel, where it was basically selling knockoffs to like, I don't think The Real Real was selling them. I think they were just showing knockoffs on that area. but diesel misspelt diesel on the back of jeans and let people genuinely come in thinking that we like getting a bargain.

36:09Bailey Smith:One of the OG ones that I remember as well was the Volkswagen print ad where it was promoting the Beetle which is like a very small car and they were very tongue-in-cheek being like it's small and everyone was because that was a huge criticism that people were like I don't want to drive this car it's too small and then they they turned it into this whole campaign and became like one of the most prolific campaigns ever in the 90s. No not the 90s? Yeah I think it It was the 90s. No, it was in the 1950s. Oh. Yeah, fuck. OJ. You're like, plus minus 40, swing it. So they're the OJ. They set the trend.

36:40Brittney Saunders:I love this. And look, I think obviously Britney has done an amazing job to bring it back to what is the purpose of fate, bringing it back to how many stores she had, also used it as an opt to announce her new Adelaide store and at the same time defended her customer. So I think full props to her and hopefully there's other ways brands can be marketing instead of having to defend their audience.

37:03Bailey Smith:Flowers for fate. Flowers for fate. All right, guys, that's it for this week's episode of Stylish. 37:39Bailey Smith:This podcast was recorded on Wurundjeri land. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land. Hello, it's Ruby Hall here. I'm the host of Shameless Media's interview show, Inherited, and I'm popping up to let you know about the conversation I had this week with National Treasure, Robert Irwin. Rob likely needs no introduction. he's the son of Steve and Terry Irwin and one of the world's most beloved conservationists and now TV personalities. Robert was only two years old when his dad Steve passed away after he was tragically killed by a stingray. And in our conversation, Robert speaks so beautifully about the legacy his father has left behind and how he feels about following it and carving out his own.

38:17Bailey Smith:Here's a quick snippet of our conversation. I've had people come up to me a lot who, who similar to myself grew up without a father figure in their lives. And they would say, oh, I grew up watching your dad. And he almost filled that kind of void just watching him. That's so special. Yeah. Like that's pretty cool. That's so cool. Yeah. That's pretty amazing to hear. Like that is, that's actually very healing when I hear something like that. You can listen to my chat with Rob Irwin in full by searching Inherited wherever you're listening to this right now. And you can find us on Instagram and TikTok at Inherited The Pod.

38:58Bailey Smith:New Inherited episodes drop every single Tuesday. So we'll see you then.
