In short

Angela Ardolino argues that conventional veterinary medicine and large pet-food/pharma interests drive harmful outcomes in dogs—especially over-vaccination and routine use of steroids, antibiotics, and immune-suppressing drugs—while many pet supplements and kibble rely on synthetic vitamins and fillers (she cites “sawdust” microcrystalline cellulose and sand-like silicon dioxide). She promotes full-spectrum hemp extract and dual-extracted medicinal mushrooms (lion’s mane, chaga, reishi, turkey tail, cordyceps) as alternatives/support for inflammation, liver/gut health, and canine cognitive dysfunction (“dog dementia”).

Guest backgrounds

Angela is a lifelong animal advocate and senior dog rescue operator. She became a veterinarian-cannabis and functional-mushroom expert after her own rheumatoid arthritis and her dog Odie’s degenerative myelopathy; she also studied the endocannabinoid system via the University of Vermont School of Medicine cannabis program.

Key claims

Vet schools are influenced by pharmaceutical and kibble companies; drugs like Apoquel and Librela have serious adverse events and are marketed without adequate side-effect transparency. Synthetic supplements overload the liver and can contribute to issues like copper storage disease. Natural plant/mushroom compounds can support the endocannabinoid system, gut microbiome, detox, and neurogenesis.

Notable examples

Her dog Odie improved after full-spectrum FECO cannabis oil. She describes rescue cases of dementia-like behaviors and a spine tumor case where a dog’s function improved after ~60 days of her regimen. She also contrasts chaga grown on live birch vs grain-grown chaga, and discusses her MycoDog formulations.

0:32Darin Olien:Before we begin this podcast, I want to talk about what's happening inside your cells right now. Most people think of supplements as just filling gaps from where they are in eating or whatever, but NAD Plus doesn't work that way. Your cells don't wait on the food to supply it. They manufacture it continuously from inside. There is a process called salvage pathway where your body takes the byproducts of used up NAD plus and recycles them back into fresh fuel, sort of like a composting system running inside every cell. Here's the problem. As you age, the enzyme that runs that recycling process called NAMPT slows down.

1:20Darin Olien:It's like the shift manager of your NAD plus factories calling in sick more and more often, right? When your cells actually demand more NAD plus to repair accumulating damage. This isn't a disease, it's just biology. By the time you're in your 40s and 50s, your cells are working much harder to produce something they need more of. True Niagen is powered by patented Niagen NR, which feeds into the NAD plus system through a separate pathway that doesn't rely on that slowing manager. It bypasses the slowdown to give your cells exactly what they already know how to use. It's backed by over 45 peer-reviewed, published human clinical trials and studies, and it only takes one daily capsule.

Today, we are taking a raw and emotional dive into the world of pet health with a truly disruptive voice, Angela Ordolino. Angela is a lifelong animal advocate, senior dog rescue operator, and leading expert in veterinarian cannabis and functional mushrooms. Her journey began when both she and her sole dog faced severe degenerative diseases. Finding conventional medicine lacking, she turned to full-spectrum cannabis oil and natural adaptogens to heal them both.

3:16Darin Olien:In this episode, we expose the shocking realities of conventional veterinary industry, pulling back the curtain on how pharmaceutical companies and massive kibble brands heavily influence vet schools. We discuss how this leads to a system that routinely over-vaccinates and hands out steroids, antibiotics, and dangerous immune-suppressing drugs like Apoquil, while relying on synthetic vitamins and literal sawdust fillers in many, many, many of the PET supplements. But Angela isn't just about exposing the problem. She is entirely focused on the solution. We explore the powerful regenerative properties of full-spectrum hemp extract and the dual-extracted medicinal mushrooms like lion's mane and chaga.

4:11Darin Olien:Of course, because that's my dog's name. Angela breaks down her groundbreaking clinical research on reversing canine cognitive dysfunction. peer-reviewed research that she headed up, or otherwise known as dog dementia. Using these natural adaptogens to promote neurogenesis and restore vitality in senior dogs, this is an incredibly empowering conversation about taking radical responsibility for the animals we love. Bypassing toxic pharmaceuticals, the quick fixes, and remembering that Mother Nature holds the true keys. to healing. Let's dive in. Welcome. Thanks. To the Super Life Podcast. So stoked you're here.

4:57Darin Olien:I'm glad you instigated me for the people that don't know. My dogs have made the studio for the first time. Woohoo! I love that. Anything I can do to meet the dogs. And it's like it's not really a big deal. Like I just you know they're out in the country in their kennel but it's like it's fun. They want to be with me. And they're so well behaved. Yeah. They're already laying down. Yeah and they want to be with me right and it's like it's so cool it is they truly are a man's best friend oh man they're evolving totally with us 100 yeah they uh

5:33Darin Olien:they've helped me through a lot of stuff same and also their mirrors right so they mirror a bunch stuff too and actually the desire of getting chaga well led to me wanting to get like seeing things in myself that I wanted that I was maybe stuck in and allowed me to kind of move into more consciously because I kept reading their mirrors and I was like okay well if he's taking something from me or trying or whatever then let's you know it's that whole thing it's like well keep focusing on my healing and the world is better at that right you know what I mean right so well yeah so thank you for coming I'm so stoked and we already started talking about Chaga's situation and stuff and and yeah so this comes from clearly a deep place for you.

6:32Darin Olien:Yes. Right. Absolutely. And, and I want to see that journey from your human experience to then dog. So you had rheumatoid arthritis. Yeah. Yeah. When I was 42, I had a flare up in my eye and I went to the eye doctor and he didn't know what it was.

6:57So he And it jumped to the other eye and he goes, you need to go get tested for rheumatoid arthritis.

7:07Darin Olien:I've never even heard that. It comes out in the eye a lot. A lot of things come out in the eyes first. So it's kind of like the canary. Actually, the canary was GI digestive issues for two years prior. So that's a sign you're going to get an autoimmune disease if the gut is imbalanced for two years and you can't figure it out. So, of course, I went, did the standard of care, the American standard of care, and went to the doctors and had the insurance and had every test and then go, nothing's wrong. We're not finding anything wrong. That's when I was having the digestive issues. They're not taught anything about the gut or the gut microbiome or how it works or any of that.

7:47So I had to go, all right, well, I'm not going to find answers here. Let me start logging down what I'm eating and what effect is happening that's making me get to this state. But anyway, figured out the gut, figured out the rheumatoid arthritis. But back to the dog thing. I had a soul dog. His name is Odie. When I lost him, it was harder than losing my mom, which was crazy and very like why and how. And it's because they are unconditional love at its finest. but he was diagnosed at the same time as my rheumatoid arthritis with degenerative myelopathy.

8:24Darin Olien:Wow. And I was immediately prescribed Humira by the doctor, which is a pharmaceutical that is prescribed for most autoimmune diseases and is already linked to lymphoma. And I was like, no, thank you. I was already talking about natural life for your family, including your dogs, how to get the toxins out of your life all of that good stuff so I was like well I'm not doing that and that's when I found a FICO or full extract of cannabis oil someone gave to me thank goodness it was a good product and I took it and I knew that I was in pain but I had no idea how much I was until I took that and literally felt the pain leave my body wow not only did it leave my body straight away like yeah like all of a sudden I felt like wow and then my stress and anxiety levels went down and I'm like what is this magic that I just took I am not high of course I stayed away from it my mom literally worked for the just say no to drugs organization so we're organization oh my god so this was this CBD and THC or just so this was a full full extract of cannabis oil Oh, okay.

9:36Full spectrum. Right. And so I immediately, I was in Florida at the time. It wasn't legal. So I became an advocate because my magazine was like, I had a magazine. I had a TV show segment. I had a radio segment that was affiliated all over the place. All I did was talk about, I've been talking about BPA and plastics for 20 years.

9:59Darin Olien:Wow. So... And you're from Vermont too. No, I'm from Florida. Oh, you are. I went to the University of Vermont School of Medicine's cannabis program. I was actually invited because I became such an advocate. But I started reporting on stories on moms, a group of moms called the Canna Moms who were healing their kids with cannabis. So I literally sold that business and threw myself into the industry because I was going to conferences where, I don't know if you've ever been to these types of conferences where you're listening to people go, we went to this many doctors, she had this long to live, and they're talking about healing kids, stopping seizures.

10:36I personally knew people whose kids would have seizures in front of me, and they'd open up their purse, take out their little tincture, lift his lip, put it on, and the seizure would stop within 30 seconds, and the kid would go back to having a normal conversation with me. And I was just sitting there going, how is this illegal? It is inhumane to keep this all natural, no side effects medicine, true plant medicine away from people. So anyway, I sold the business through myself into the industry. I had no idea where I'd end up. I already had a rescue that I had been operating for years, mostly farm animals and old dogs.

11:19But when I got my diagnosis, I was started immediately with the FECO, changed my diet even more, you know, than I thought I already was doing, removing any toxins left from my life did the same thing with my dog and then in 2016 I'm sorry I hired like the best consultant traveled everywhere learned how to source what different strains did if I put this strain if I know these cannabinoids you know everything with this guy from fundraising to the best grow house to the worst grow house like how everything was done so that I could go, what do I want to do here? And then in 2016, I was invited to the University of Vermont School of Medicine study for the endocannabinoid system and its biology of the cannabis plant and its therapeutic uses.

12:11And that's where I learned that animals had the endocannabinoid system also. And I was like, I'm going to become the cannabis animal, especially dog expert. And that's what I've been doing for the past 10 years. So I started bringing in, after I learned, I already knew a lot about herbalism and about 10 mushrooms I know very well. So I just started formulating. If I already had research showing if I put more than one adaptogen, I consider cannabis the queen of adaptogens. You put anything with her, you've turned up the volume of synergy potency everything works better so I love combining other adaptogens with hemp mushrooms being one of my favorites so I would just start taking cases from veterinarians you know that would call me rescues dogs that would be left at my boarding facility because what I learned at my boarding facility which was very I purchased it and then of course made it a holistic daycare boarding and grooming, which was a lot of work to do.

13:17Because if you saw that industry and what they do behind the scenes, it is not good. So I totally had to remodel the whole place. On a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I'd see 100 dogs each day. So on a weekend, I'd see 300 dogs. And I'd have always between five to 10 to sometimes 20 dogs at my rescue. and most of the dogs were suffering most of them had lumps bumps skin issues missing hair unhealthy too fat too skinny horrible dental and of course I would talk to them and they'd be like we've been to every vet we've changed the food a million times so I lost my first dog when at seven years old.

14:05So this is what started my natural living thing. Also lost my mom to cancer. So everything of questioning, everything that was in my environment started then. But to know that most people were going through that, most people were putting, stacking prescription meds and shampoos and sprays, and the dog is still suffering and in lumps and I'm like it's not working right can we stop right you're right it's gotten worse I would be able to do more with a dog doing natural remedies for three hours while I had them in my care and have them feeling better looking better everything or the amount of people that would show up with their dog drugged out on trazodone or something because they're fearful of the groomers I'm like not allowed anymore you want to come here you got to do my CBD with lavender formulation.

14:56You give it 20 minutes behind, we'll have it here. Now we're training them. Now we're teaching them to be calm. And this is what a grooming experience is. It isn't bad. It isn't scary. So it's just, it was sad to see that. And then I was like, all right, I'm a get to the root cause, whether it's the disease or a problem and it's the food and it's the medications and it's also the supplements. It's the supplements that are filled with isolated ingredients and synthetic vitamins and minerals. Like that's where I'm at now. I've got the pet parents who are know about feeding right, know about trying to avoid the antibiotics and the steroids and all of those things.

15:41And now they're stacking all of these supplements and most of them are filled with synthetic vitamins and minerals, additives and fillers that all have a side effect. They all cause the liver to work overtime. The liver doesn't recognize them. Like I wanted to know why 90 % of the dogs coming through my shop had lumps and bumps on them because that's a groomer's nightmare, right? They cut or shave one by accident. It bleeds and now they've cut an animal and now we got to deal with that so groomers inspect good groomers inspect the whole animal most of them had them i'm like why why oh that's because when the liver doesn't know what to do with a synthetic ingredient it tries to process it it tries to metabolize it sometimes we're lucky enough that it goes okay i gotta get rid of this and sends it out other times it stores it copper being one of the worst, you know, that it stores it in the liver, which causes copper storage disease.

16:39And a lot of raw feeders are experiencing that because they're getting their food from a factory farm or a grocery store. And then they're adding some sort of powdered vitamin and mineral mix, which is also synthetic. You don't know what the copper content is of the actual food that you just bought and now you've got copper storage disease which of course to diagnose that you get the dog gets diagnosed with everything else in the world because veterinarians don't know shit about that because they weren't taught about that they're the ones prescribing the synthetic vitamins and minerals because that's what they were taught they don't know they haven't gone to that next step of why is this dog still not at homeostasis?

17:25What is preventing this dog's endocannabinoid system from functioning properly? What can we give it or remove it from its life that will help it get that way? So dogs like yours are my specialty when I'm like, all right, he's doing the right feeding. Now let's look at everything else. Let's even see if we got a right diagnosis. let's look at what german shepherds are prone to let's look at his environment um and i know you're looking at it all but i look at shit that nobody looks at because i always want to know

18:00Darin Olien:yeah well i mean in terms of that yeah i mean in terms of chaga um it's like i'm not stopping but there's still like the homeopathics in the last two months have helped a lot good and it's moving in the right direction. But it's like, you know, this form of skin lupus, whatever, I forget the exact term, but it's like, again, like we talked, like it's, of course there's a source of what this is and there's balance that needs to be strived for. and um and i'm again like i'm never as soon as a vet says i've gone through so many vets i can i don't i mine is on a zoom call yeah that's what i do now i don't i don't ever i it's got to be an emergency situation otherwise unless they're a holistic or naturopathic which is equivalent to a holistic in the vet world and even then yeah you know when you look at the supplements that they're going to go to I just got a new I just moved not too long ago and got a new naturopathic doctor where I went to where I moved to and she prescribed nine supplements all but one of the supplements had additives and fillers in it so I went over to Claude and said hey Claude could you find me these without the fillers and additives in it.

19:34And not only did I find them, but bought it down to five, five little capsules. But people don't understand that things like microcrystalline cellulose and silicone dioxide are literal fillers. Microcrystalline cellulose is sawdust. It's literally wood pulp and it's used so that they don't have to put as much of the compound in there for sure or they want to fill that capsule up all the way so you feel like you're getting more medicine right that every day or every day on a dog's food or capsules or whatever disrupts the gut yeah and it's been proven it's not just my opinion right silicon dioxide is sand so i don't know about you i'd be pissed off if i was buying a supplement that had sawdust and sand in it and those are the least of the offenders right because the synthetic vitamins and minerals to me are what's really hurting our dogs really because they're i literally know holistic veterinarians right now who are selling a powder that is just a combo of them and throwing them on top every day because remember you know i know you know about afco and you know about balanced and complete bullshit we don't do that we don't have to do with our dogs either real food is real food is real food.

20:55And mushrooms and plants, I know you already know that, provide us with just about everything that we need. Our dogs need a little bit more of things from animals than we do, but it doesn't have anything to do with making sure that they get this amount of vitamin D, especially if it's synthetic. It's not helping them. It's hurting them.

21:19Darin Olien:Yeah, so you got, I mean, I'd like to take a quick break from this episode to thank our sponsor, Fatty15. That's right. I want to talk about something that isn't talked about enough, keeping our cells healthy. Here's what I'm doing now to prioritize cellular health, supplementing with this new, exciting research, and it's called Fatty15. Fatty 15 has three times more cellular benefit than omega-3s or fish oil. This is dietary odd chain saturated fatty acids, OCFAs. There are present trace levels in dietary fat, some fish, and plants. Higher circulating concentrations of this OCFS. we realize through the research that higher circulating concentrations of this is extremely good for us.

22:17Darin Olien:It is called pentadonic chaotic acid or C15. Omega-3 fish oils and algae oils often go bad before they're even in the bottle. That's right. They're susceptible to oxygen and sunlight and the supplements can't even help to improve our health usually. But fatty 15 or C15 naturally protects against damaging oxidation both in the bottle and in your body. If you want to get a little more science-y about it, studies show that C15 works by strengthening our cells, improving our mitochondria function, and protecting us against damage from free radicals on a very deep level. The result, better long-term metabolic liver and heart health functioning.

23:07Darin Olien:It ends up many of us are massively deficient in C15, which results in weaker and weaker cells that makes us have less energy. And we quit working earlier. We're seeking to find that energy. Where is it? All of this makes us age faster and faster. and the science around this is so fascinating. We sleep poorly, we feel sluggish, and we're all looking to feel better and have more energy. Does it sound familiar? Fatty 15 is science-backed, award-winning, vegan-friendly, and pure C15 supplement. That's it. By replenishing ourselves with this newly discovered C15, the nutrient of fatty 15 effectively repairs our cells and restores our long-term health.

24:04Darin Olien:That's when you have to celebrate science. When science discovered something sitting there all along, after 90 years of discovering essential fatty acids like omega-3, 6, and 9, we now have discovered this incredible odd chain saturated fat c15 fatty 15 is on a mission to replenish your c15 levels and restore your long-term health and i'm with them in that you can get an additional 15 off your 90 day subscription starter kit by going to fatty 15 f-a-t-t-y one five dot com slash Darren, D-A-R-I-N, or use the code Darren, D-A-R-I-N, at checkout. You will not want to miss this incredible deal and this incredible uptick to your healthy cells.

25:02Darin Olien:You got exposed to so many dogs, right? And would you say then that the leading kind of thing that you could see right away was the skin issues was the liver stuff yeah because of the kibble because of the kibble stuff because of kibble yeah they've never my dogs have never had kibble there's no way awesome man it's the same like of course but it's hard because that's what your vet is prescribing you that's what you're you know when i normal when i talk about when i talk about losing my first dog at age seven i was in my 20s and i waited to get a dog so when i got a house and I had a yard and state-of-the-art veterinarian opened across the street and I was like I took my little puppy over there and I said I want to do everything I can to keep her alive so I did the monthly flea and tick the heartworm the vaccinate the over vaccination and by age six she's got diarrhea I'll purina pro plan what they all you know prescribe well you know why they do that because they get them while they're in school because i know because i go teach about the endocannabinoid system at vet schools i don't get invited by the school of professors i get invited by the holistic club and they come listen to me during their lunch hour you walk through the hallways and it's all mars hills they give them free food it's literally like brainwashing they fund the school now they're buying up the vet offices the food causes the problem that then gives the drug and then the drug has a side effect and then we're stacked up and i know this because my rescue is a senior dog rescue so i'd get these dogs in that were all on five to ten medications and ear things and eye things and special shampoos and sprays and freaking everybody was on a steroid and antibiotic they hand out steroid and antibiotics like they're candy i'm like why did Did they find a bacterial infection?

27:00I don't think so. What do you mean? You don't know?

27:03Darin Olien:Right. Yeah, they didn't test. Because we blindly put the health of us and our family into someone else's hands, and we should not be doing that. Right. We need to be in charge of our own and our pet's health. Yeah, it's the same playbook that you're doing for the humans as they are. Except their property. Right. So if I'm a pharmaceutical company that makes a drug like Remetil, I'm sorry, not Remetil, Librella, Librella, as we should call it, and it's the newest drug being prescribed to old dogs, whether they have arthritis or not, it was a human drug that fell out of favor and caused all these issues.

27:45It literally causes OA and literally stops nerve growth factor. So, again, the audacity to change what the body does blows my mind that people do that in a lab and sell it. So this drug, when that happens, they've gone in and they've spent millions of dollars developing this drug. They're not about to just flush it down the toilet. It comes over to the vet space and starts getting used. It has over 17 ,000 adverse events. The FDA has written letters to them and veterinarians saying, hey, beware. and still being prescribed every single day and killing dogs every single day.

28:25Darin Olien:So people have, usually the older dogs, yeah, people can be aware and ask their vet, like, and say no. If that's not going to know because the vet. But they can ask their vet what they want to prescribe, and you can obviously say no. Absolutely. You need to go home because they're not even giving you the little pamphlet that goes with, like, Apoquil that is connected to, like, over 20 cancers now. and or even what I just did my first piece of clinical research so I learned a lot. I hired a research center that was run by a conventional vet who's been doing this for 15 years for pharmaceutical companies and he literally told me hey you know you just have to run it for three months you just have to prove that the health of the animal doesn't change.

29:10So they go to you know about the Ridgeland Beagles. They go to Ridgeland and they test it for three months on young healthy dogs and then oftentimes this is all my research I'm like why is Apiquil on its third research? What happened to the first and second? They killed dogs so they got to change something. Like Apiquil has a warning do not use for dogs younger than 12 months old. How do you think they came up with that warning? They killed freaking puppies. So I just want people like you love dogs, drugs are being tested on them when we don't need to. A full spectrum hemp extract does the same exact thing as Apoquil does.

29:52The Remedal, forget about it. Same thing, full spectrum turmeric extract, frankincense. I could go on and on with what was amazing for inflammation and whatever, and you do not need to go turn to that drug. But a pharmaceutical rep comes into the vet and says, here's this new awesome drug. It works really well. The vet goes, are there any side effects? Nope. And that's literally like, I've had several people on my podcast, the attorney who's doing like a class action type, one of the, another lawyer who they killed, they killed two attorney's dogs. So they're coming together. I'm loving it. I'm loving it.

30:30Like we're watching Zoetis's, which is owned by Pfizer's stock crash and Remedaloo's and they put more marketing and advertising in. They've now released an injectable because injectables you can't get out. Injectables, they have to go back into the vet office and inject them like Cytopoint. You know, just, it's crazy what they're doing to our animals. And there's no, their property. So what are you going to do? The judge is going to go, how much was your vet bill type of thing? So there's no, there's no repercussions for the evil that they do.

31:05Darin Olien:Yeah. So, so there's a lot that we can do. we can say no to that stuff and start to build for people listening, start to build a foundation of healthier eating, healthier supplementation. So where do you think people, and then I want to get into your actual research because that's so fascinating. And then all the work, of course, on the adaptogenic side, the functional mushroom side of things. Incredible. What do you think, because I know it's nuts what goes on in normal health care, normal veterinarian care. But listen, we get to stand up for we don't get to go to sleep in our own health. We have to be the CEO of our own lives as well as, hey, we decided to be a caretaker.

Read the full transcript

32:03Darin Olien:so let's be the best caretaker we can. Right? So we need to inform ourselves and we need to have these conversations. We have a choice. Yeah. Just like when I got my diagnosis, I was given one thing. I wasn't taught about diet, nutrition. I wasn't taught about toxins. I wasn't talking, nobody told me about epigenetics. Nobody taught, none of that. Yeah. So just knowing that you have a choice and that even if you want to go the conventional route because you're not comfortable. Here's what you can do to prep beforehand and afterwards to help the dog clear out whatever toxins or whatever it is. Because some shit we still have to do, you know, and there's no way around it.

32:43So what can you do to help them prep and detox afterwards, just like us? But they are, they're just like us. I wouldn't myself or my family member, I wouldn't put Ella agrees.

32:56Darin Olien:Ella says, yep. Ella agrees. I wouldn't put anything in or on my child, my pet, or myself without literally, and, you know, I say do your research, but of course you're going to find the wrong information. So going in there and saying, I want to know, I'm sure you know about ewg.org, you know, where you can literally look up, is this product safe? It doesn't exist for animals. I want to start it because I have so much information. Well, just also, like, just as we're talking here, I want to, like, plug your podcast so people can come get more information. Thank you. Your natural dog. Your natural dog.

33:32Darin Olien:Perfect. Your natural dog. So, yeah, I'm here to let you know you have a choice. Every pharmaceutical drug comes from a food plant or a mushroom that did the job, but you can't patent those and make billions of dollars, so they recreate it in a lab. and there's going to be a side effect to every drug because you've changed it and the body doesn't know what it is anymore. Right. So one compound does the action, but then there's all the other things that happen because it needed all the support to get there. When Mother Nature doesn't make mistakes, neither does our body. Right. Mother Nature provides us with all the food and medicine that we need And we just have to grow it right, extract, harvest it right, extract it right, preserve it right.

34:19Like alcohol. I didn't set out to be a disruptor. I just was pissed off that I lost my first dog at seven, and then I could see the state of how many of these dogs, you know, what they were like. But I'm even a disruptor in the herbalist world because dogs shouldn't have alcohol. Why do I have to say that? We know alcohol is poison. It's an amazing tool for extraction. But you know all you have to do is evaporate it off. But that takes time and money, so we're not going to bother with that. So I got herbalists that want nothing to do with me because I'm anti-alcohol, especially for pets. Or us.

35:01Why am I taking something that's good for my gut that's in alcohol or something that's bad for my gut?

35:07Darin Olien:How does that make any sense? Yeah, yeah, no, I get it. So, you know, I'm, yeah, a lot of people don't agree with me, but I don't understand how you don't. Animals don't, especially dogs, don't make the same enzyme that breaks down alcohol like us. And we do, and it's still harmful to us. So what is it doing with a dog that can't break it down? Yeah, even in dose, dose is poison. Like it does. It's like them doing a little shot. A little shot, yeah. That's what I'm saying. Oh, it's just sawdust. oh it's just sand every single day yeah along with all the other things that don't they shouldn't be taken and everything else that their liver and body has to deal with the pesticide the chemical on the sidewalk that you know fire retardants in the in the carpets and the and they're down there smelling it licking it licking their paws a lot more sensitive um Um, so if, if someone's listening now, what do you think are some of this, I mean, food is one clearly, um, and we can unpack that a little bit, but, um, what are some things that people can start like right now, generally speaking, um, to create a good foundation from your perspective?

36:30Well, if there, you know, I, I've been on stage talking like this and look down the audience and seen people crying. So A, I ain't judging you. I did it. I just told you I did it to my dog. I killed my first dog because I didn't know better. And I put her health in someone else's hands and it was just a stacking. So her body could no longer heal itself. Her detox systems did not work anymore. Her gut was gone. And that's where our immune system lives. I want people to understand that we have an innate ability to heal ourself. And so are pets, especially our pets. They are animals. They used to live in the wild.

37:04It's called zoo pharmacognosy. They would go out and find the plants and the mushrooms that healed or brought them back to homeostasis. They would eat the parts of the animal that would bring them back to normal or homeostasis. They need more vitamin. They ate the liver. They need more. You know what I'm saying? It's just, that's nature. And we have gotten way far away from nature.

37:28Darin Olien:Okay, everybody. Are you ready to upgrade your operating system. I know I am. I'm always game to do that. Not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Yeah, right. And that's all they do because that's all they're taught. Right. Not because they want to go out.

39:09This is why we have veterinarians as one of the highest suicide rates. people who want to actually go out and help animals the good ones and they get out of school and they're in debt and they they're not able to help animals i understand that yeah all i want to do is be a vet as uh when i was a kid and i'm so glad i didn't go that route and i'm glad i'm where i'm at but it's exhausting this is all i do so you have a choice know that you have a choice even if you have you're on medications right now you can literally naturally support the body and the detox systems to help them get rid of whatever the bad stuff is that might be built up so milk thistle seed extract for instance is one of my favorites for helping the liver function and do what it's supposed to and get all of that out of there you literally could keep on doing what you're doing and give them a full spectrum hemp extract and maybe a dual extracts of a mushroom combo because the way they detoxify support the gut help the immune system do its job the receptors are everywhere all over it's like the skin has its own endocannabinoid system separate from the whatever and the endocannabinoid system is our master system in charge of all of our other systems And do you know it's called the endocannabinoid ohm now because the gut microbiome is part of this system.

40:37So being able to feed this system, if this system has a deficiency, it's no longer producing the endocannabinoids that it needs. There happens to be this beautiful cannabis plant, which is what hemp is, that makes phytocannabinoids that feed that deficiency. So you literally still, even if you're feeding the kibble and doing everything wrong, you can still help your dog. You can at least help them feel a lot better. Any pain or discomfort or inflammation, they're going to feel so much better. And it's helping the immune system. So understand that. Helping the body do its job is what you want to do.

41:17Know what your choices are. Look at everything that you're at. Like people contact me all the time and go, is this okay? You don't have Google? You don't have chat? And say, I want to know the side effects. I want to know, is there any reviews or reports? Because, of course, like literally the FDA has to tell these pharmaceutical companies, you need to tell everybody you're killing dogs with your drugs. They don't have to. It's the pharmaceutical company's job to go, we should pull this. We should recall this. people don't understand that people think we're being protected by the fda and we're not and your vet doesn't know better you're responsible if you're prescribed a drug that you give your dog that your dog then deteriorates and dies it's your fault not your vet's fault because you can say i don't want that right and i'm not taking that i'm gonna look up the holistic for instance reishi a dual extract of reishi reishi with water and alcohol is like steroids Tremela is like hyaluronic acid.

42:24Every drug comes from something that a mushroom or a plant or whatever does. So you literally can find what is the true full whole spectrum of wherever this drug was derived from.

42:37Darin Olien:Right. Without the side effects. Without the side effects. Now the new thing happening is milk thistle extract, like I just mentioned. The active compound, the most powerful compound is silymarin. So now what do they do? They have a milk thistle extract with a thousand milligrams of silymarin. Did you see the National Geographic article about supplements? They just released an article about supplements and they're talking about, they call out turmeric and ashwagandha turmeric because turmeric root has two to five percent curcuminoids i don't know if i said that right extract raises it about five to twenty percent most of the supplements on the market are going 95 to 97 curcuminoids right liver no longer knows what that shit is right now you've now you've made it toxic and people think more better whatever and this the product that i even looked at was an a based on ayurvedic medicine and i looked up and i'm like i'm pretty sure traditional chinese and ayurvedic have never isolated anything ever for any medical medicine reason and i'm right so no it's not you're using natural ingredients but you're using them in the wrong way.

43:57You don't isolate it. Like cannabis is a perfect example. The main receptors are CB1 and CB2 receptors. THC has to bind to the receptor first before CBD can. You take out the THC, now CBD doesn't bind. So that's just one little example.

44:21Darin Olien:The chemistry is so complex. Exactly. Mother Nature made it to do what it does, and it needs all its terpenes and flavonoids and phytonutrients and fatty acids and all the thousands of things that are in it. Even in cannabis, there's 118 cannabinoids discovered. They all do something, but they also all help each other do whatever it is that they've been studying. Synergy at its best. Yeah, don't mess with it. Yeah. In terms of food, what's your path? Do you like to prepare all of it yourself? No. No. I'm like you. I don't got time for that shit. So one of the things that I discovered on my rescue is, because I got really good, my expertise is old dogs.

45:09And all the diseases they get and how you can support them and the pain and everything that they go through like us. So, of course, I'm doing great at my age figuring shit out because I learned it through studying them. um by the way my rheumatoid arthritis and my dog's degenerative malopathy i made one formula where i took a full spectrum hemp extract with turmeric extract and frankincense extract and i healed both my disease and his disease wow so same formula same formula his little picture is on the the bottle so i um and nobody makes and it doesn't even come anywhere close to what i do because I'm not, my intent is to make real medicine out of plants and mushrooms.

45:53My intent is to help the body heal anything that it's going through. So degenerative malopathy, you go from, he went from not going, he was a miniature schnauzer, not going up the steps to haul an ass up the stairs again. You know, there's no denying it. The moment you put one dropper on, the moment that connection, you know, a lot of dogs that lose and go lame in the back, the moment that inflammation goes down now that message is now going back to the back legs and a dog who hasn't walked for four years this is a true story gets up and walks again wow and you're like yep i learned i made it right i grew it right i preserve it right i make it a therapeutic dose and that's what happened with mushrooms my doberman got osteosarcoma one in nine large breed dogs gets osteosarcoma you got a rottweiler doberman a german shepherd i would start on a full spectrum hemp extract now to help their body prevent it but she that's when i was like all right i was a practitioner for another mushroom company so i'm like all right here's my my research my school this is how much turkey tail how much reishi how much chaga how much cordyceps how much everything that I need to give her to help.

47:15Wait a minute. I'm going to have to put half this packet in her food. I'm going to have to give her six capsules to get a therapeutic dose. That's what people don't understand either, is most products aren't made a therapeutic dose because they're more expensive. And they don't want to spend$99 on something. Well, when you buy my$99, taking sure it does what it says it's going to do, and then you're going to keep on buying it that's my philosophy but that's not what most are so that's when i became like oh my god i gotta find whatever then i found out they were being grown on sawdust from a sawmill in china that they all came from china because then that was my next question if mushrooms are water why is a dual extract coming in a powder yeah exactly if i put powder on my skin and rub it it's not going to go it's not going to go into my skin put an extract on my skin it is right so how do you say that they're the same right how do you say they're just as effective bullshit you've put it through another process and the only reason you're doing it is because it's coming from china it's a lot cheaper to ship powder it's easier to put those fillers in all the things that we get scared about products coming from china that they put all the other stuff in it is true happens so So I found a myco-alchemist here in Oregon, not here, we're in California, but in Oregon, who makes human products.

48:40And I got with him and I said, can I give you some of my formulas and can we burn off that alcohol after? And so that's what we've been doing ever since. And I was worried at first because my hemp formulations, the moment they hit your gums, you're feeling something within 30, 60 seconds. So is your dog. mushrooms I was like I don't know if they're going to have that same effect should we should we tell anybody if they hear snoring it's not us yeah yeah Chaga's snoring Chaga snoring can you hear it can you hear Chaga snoring

49:16Darin Olien:everyone if you if you listen very closely Chaga will take you through a meditation that's right snoring just listen as he goes up you go up Yes, he's the embodiment of chaga, the mushroom, and he is... Which actually is a canker. Yeah. And I love chaga. You know, chaga has more antioxidants than anything else. Anything. It's the king. It's the king. But you know what? That chaga has to be grown on a live birch tree to have those medicinal compounds. Otherwise, it don't. Most of the chaga is being grown on grain. Yeah, especially with... In a plastic bag in a basement somewhere. especially with the you know that's the problem too is like as things get marketed and the information gets out people want it so then it shows up in every product but like i knew like i i formulated some stuff human stuff with chaga in but it was super late because i originally i was like there's no way the supply can handle and we did get um you know tested you get qualities you can get definitely get some qualities so it's like there's no what we tested in the quality control there's no downside but you're just not getting you can't you can't recreate nature to your point um and you got to be careful with that stuff but um but yeah this is i mean i remember one of my favorite stories is um getting pricing for lion's mane because what you just said is exactly true the supply is small yeah so i've gone around and turned a lot of culinary farmers into medicinal mushroom farmers because it's really not that hard the changes that they have to make.

51:06We just have to go. It's just like how our feed animals that we feed our dogs with, we want them to have a biologically appropriate diet, right? Because a grass-fed, grass-finished cow is going to have all of the nutrients that we want to give to our animal. Same thing with our mushrooms and our plants. They need to be fed the biologically, the healthy soil or the wood or the decaying matter that they find in nature or the live birch tree. Otherwise, they don't have it. Even shiitake, there's research that shows shiitake grown on sawdust versus hard log. Hard log has so many more of the magical compounds.

51:42That's what nature wants. That's what the mushroom wants. Leave it alone.

51:46Darin Olien:That's what we recognize biologically. Right. So now, yes, we have enough farmers. Everything we do, we either wild forage or wild craft. And wild craft means we grow it on the wood or the substrate found in nature. We haven't had to go out of the United States yet. If we did, it would be for chaga and it would be in Canada. And we already have that as a backup going, you know, that meets our standards. But like when I started, I would get pricing. So lion's mane, for instance,$5 a pound and$80 a pound. What do you think the difference is? so when people look at my formulas or my tinctures again they're like how much for this extract or whatever it is yeah but it's gonna work it's gonna do what it said it did because not only was it grown right when it got because most products don't even have mushrooms in them right they're either all coming from china or they're growing they're taking grain and they inoculate that grain with the spores and the mycelium takes over they don't even wait for the mushroom to pop up they grind that thing up and call it a mushroom right yeah that's that's where it gets it gets really tricky and then the the it's just a label and then there's no active anything and nobody regulating it right and there's not even there's not even like in hemp or cannabis labs that test the bioactives in it and then they'll go oh well here it has this many beta glucans are those beta glucans from the mushrooms or are they from the grain that they were grown on exactly well that's a we don't need to get into that nuance um so you have all these products available yes for pets okay they're all human grade but they're yep they're all for pets great so just just know um so my research yeah well first off what's the website for the for the products uh mycodog.com mycodog great um yeah so the research so this is interesting so i didn't even i wasn't even aware there was cognitive decline with dogs which is sad which actually really awesome because that you're not seeing any of it yet in your 10 year old yeah because that's that's kind of when it starts i mean she became a senior he became a senior he right he became a senior when he turned nine actually when he turned six oh really yeah so when he turned six he became 60 he's a little bit older than you and it's all the same things that we deal with aging and i didn't know how alzheimer's or dementia killed you i i honestly remember you just forget right everybody thinks it's just the forget disease so how bad could it be?

54:36Well, when you run a rescue with old dogs, I would get dogs and I would get them all the time because this is when the family gives up. They don't even recognize the person anymore. They're suddenly going to the bathroom in the house. They never did that before. They're not sleeping through the night anymore. One of the worst things that happens, they fall into the pool and they drown. And they're like, how? The pool's been there his entire life. How did he forget? But he's got dementia. Wow. The first sign is them not sleeping through the night. Suddenly they get up. Am I thirsty? Do I need to go outside?

55:12Whatever it is. Whatever it is. And it's not. It's just their sleep getting disrupted and dementia is setting in. But it wasn't until one of my rescues, and this was like one of my best cases, she had MCT, big old golf ball-sized tumor on her spine. She was already lame, dragging one leg. Her owner died. She was in my boarding facility for like 30 days. I'm like, what's going on with this dog? Call the family. They're like, you think we're just going to take her to the pound? I'm like, nope, I'll take her. Literally exploded that dog. By this time, I was like, MCT, no problem. I mean, unbelievable watching the body kill and remove things.

55:56And that was internal. That was on its spine. So I got to watch it. So, yes, internal and topical. And the topical. And we filmed everything of it. And it's disgusting and bloody and gross. She felt no pain because, of course, it gets rid of pain or whatever. And how long? Got her about 60 days for it to be completely gone. 60 days.

56:18Darin Olien:She had it for how long? Oh, I don't even know because it was like the mom's dog and they didn't know or care or whatever. Got her function back. And then when she was 18, she all of a sudden is getting up. She was a Beagle Black Lab mix. She was getting up from her bed, walking over to her water bowl, just standing there, going back, never drinking, doing it like four times in a row. And my partner goes, I think she has Alzheimer's. And I'm like, what makes you say that? How the hell do you know? What do you know? Well, my dad, he lost his dad to Alzheimer's. And you lose your, you don't remember how to eat and drink.

56:55What? You're thirsty and hungry, but you can't eat or drink. You don't know how to eat or swallow anymore. And I'm like, are you kidding me? So, of course, Angie goes down the rabbit hole again. Nothing exists for dogs. This is why my rescue is filled, because people can't deal with this. That's what was wrong with that dog and that dog and that dog. Oh, my gosh, and there's nothing for them. The recommendation at that time, and this is like four years ago, five years ago, the recommendation then when you go, my dog is confused and I think walking in circles was to put them down. Right. That was the vet's number one recommendation.

57:37And they can't do that. So they end up at my dog or left in my boarding facility or the vet calls me and goes, I think you can do something with this one. So I start going into my adaptogens because I love my adaptogens. and there's something called metropics, which are adaptogens that help the brain. Lion's mane extract, dual extract, Bacopa mineri, which is another adaptogen, have both been proven already in research to regenerate neurons and regrow our telomeres, which I don't know if you know what our telomeres are. I do, yeah. So I think that's effing amazing.

58:17Darin Olien:Yeah. This is an extract from a plant and a mushroom that helps my brain anti-age. Mother Nature is amazing. I don't care what anybody has to say now. So I put a formulation together. I lost Daisy to dementia because she couldn't eat and drink anymore. And that's how people die too. They're feeding tubes and whatever, keeping them alive. There's also nothing for humans. Dogs' brains. I'm not saying I have the cure for dementia or anything, but. Right. There's some strong evidence. There's a lot of evidence. And I went ahead and took my formulation because I literally watched magic happen at my senior dog rescue by giving him this formula.

59:05Now, I do a dual extra. I do lots. I am an extra. I am that bitch. I'm going to do everything. So from growing them on the right substrate, harvesting them at a certain point, dual extract, which is both a hot water, then an alcohol. After everything that's left over that extraction, we purify it and put it back in. It's called a spagyric preparation. It's the best that you could possibly do. And preserve it in an organic vegetable glycerin. and I watched dogs go from standing in corners, not sleeping at night, to completely going back to normal. I didn't have anybody severe on my case, but I have lots of customers now that do.

59:50So I'm like, all right, there's nothing on the market for these dogs. They're literally being told there's nothing that they can do. In the human space, there's two drugs and they're terrible. and one of the warnings are and there's a there's a drug coming out for longevity or what do they call it an anti-aging I don't know if they've named it yet called loyal which literally has a warning that it shouldn't be used for more than a year so they already have no intention of whoever's getting that to live longer than a year how is giving more synthetics for your liver to your overworked liver going to help anything.

1:00:27Yeah, that's good. So we hired the vet I told you about. He's the one that taught me about how most research is done for pharmaceutical drugs. Librella, sure enough, three months. Apoquil, three months, both multiple things. Librella's research was, I can't remember how many dogs, but their only way of documenting everything was pet parent surveys. Oh, gosh. That's a, Pfizer made$300 billion in, I think, 2023. Zoetis is their animal arm. Little old me did more in my clinical research than they did. Wow. So I brought on dogs that were already diagnosed with mild, moderate, and severe CCD, which is canine cognitive dysfunction or disease, which is doggy dementia.

1:01:21and we gave them the formula and we tracked by an activity caller so that we could track heart rate activity are they sleeping through the night are they constantly pacing we also did pet parent surveys so that we could track the pet parent could track and we also did two blood biomarker tests so we tested bdnf which is brain derived metropic factor and proved that We were regenerating neurons and neurogenesis. And we also did CRP, which is C-reactive protein, which is an inflammation marker. And we had an 81 % improvement rate. Dogs that were severe stopped getting worse. And the moderate and the mild reversed.

1:02:12So it went back to being normal.

1:02:15Darin Olien:How long was that? Three months. We did everything in three months. Three months, yeah. So of course I'd love to continue it and do it longer, but it is very expensive, very time-consuming. Did you raise money for that? Nope, I funded it myself. Wow. So I funded it and did it for, it took a whole year to recruit, get it. We got thousands of submissions, but I wanted to battle the Dog Aging Project, which we've got great data from, But the dog aging project is to push rapamycin. And rapamycin already has, is for people who get organ transplants and they have proven in rats that it's doing anti-aging things.

1:02:58And I get them all mixed up. I'm pretty sure that's the one that does the same action as fasting does. Right, right.

1:03:06Darin Olien:Have you talked with the Forever Dog, Rodney Habib and Dr. Karen Becker? Yep, they're colleagues of mine, yep. we've spoken on lots of i was uh rodney's first hemp expert back in what was it 2019 i believe he's he's he was like a period of time he was like every other day talking with me like he's and i was helping him with his dog yeah really yeah wow it's and it becomes such a small world like that yeah i remember going in into the canna because uh cannabis dispensaries had just opened it because he's in Nova Scotia and I remember going into the cannabis I'm like I'm gonna find you something here and I remember walking in and asking hey I'm looking for like a one-to-one and they're like what do you mean what do you mean and I'm like do you have tinctures what's a tincture wow like extracts of cannabis in a liquid form oh my gosh so it was like I I was so excited because I learned.

1:04:10One of my first educators was a man who had a license in Canada, and he was the way he was growing. My first thing was who's growing medicine and not a recreational product? Who's growing the ones that have all the cannabinoids, not the ones who are just trying to get as much THC out of a plant as possible? And so, yeah, just how it was grown and extracted and everything. I know it all. I know how to do it. I know how to make medicine and formulate it. and make it work. But to me, if you got an old dog, first of all, you got a large dog, give it full spectrum hemp extract.

1:04:46Darin Olien:Like straight up. Straight up. And I would do 40 to 50 milligrams a day. And that's the - Food doesn't matter. Just food. Food does matter. Yeah, okay. Food is the number one thing. No, but I mean with food or - With, oh yeah. With the - Sorry, when you're giving it? Yeah. Yes. So you're always going to want a full spectrum hemp extract. Yeah. You're going to want to make sure it has a COA, a certificate of analysis proving that it's free of contaminants. And you're going to want to make sure it's yours. No. I'm just saying. There's probably like 10, maybe 10, that we all started at the same time that are all making full-spectrum good products.

1:05:23Darin Olien:I know Danny gave me some. Yeah, and I know Danny is a full-spectrum believer in all that too. Of course. The difference between us and our dogs is we've got proof research that shows that dogs have more receptors than we do. Wow. So that's why they're more sensitive to THC, but it is not toxic to them. Now, people are going to go on, because I get called out all the time online, people go on and Google, it's toxic. So let's get ahead of it. Exactly. They're going to Google, is THC toxic to dogs? And there's going to be one article after another that says, yes, it is. It is not. Now, a recreational product that you're getting from a dispensary most likely is toxic to your dog.

1:06:06And yes, it's not going to kill them as long as it doesn't have chocolate or raisins or anything like that, but it is going to make them high and they may not have a good reaction. But a pure product will still get your dog high, but it is not dangerous. And they literally did a research study in 1973 called the Rosencrantz study, where they wanted to see how much THC was lethal or toxic to a human. And like they do with everything, They tested it on animals. So they tested it on rats, beagles, and chimpanzees. And two rats died after they slept, went to sleep, regurgitated, and asphyxiated on their vomit.

1:06:48Oh, jeez. No beagles died, and no chimpanzees died. So they gave them 9 ,000 milligrams of THC, and they couldn't do it. It's called there's no overdose, like LD50. There's no lethal dose of cannabis for humans or any mammals.

1:07:09Darin Olien:It can knock you out, obviously. It can make you high. And if you got the wrong product, make you feel like you're dying. But it will not kill you. It's not like an opioid. It's not like a pharmaceutical drug where it's messing with your cardiovascular or your respiratory or anything like that. And your body knows what it is. So it's like, we got this. Just give me a minute. Yeah, just give me a minute. It's going to have the reaction. So it's a lot. This is a lot. Exactly. But the chimpanzees, like, I can't remember how many months, but it wasn't very long, and the chimpanzees regulated themselves and didn't even act high anymore.

1:07:42Darin Olien:I want to see a chimpanzee high. Yeah, I know. It's probably really fun. There's got to be pictures. But not high for mothership. No, good stuff. I don't want to see abuse. Right, exactly. I want to see full-spectrum, TAC. Well, haven't you ever seen the animals that are eating like the fermented apples in their pie? There's a fermented fruit in Africa that like pops off once and all the monkeys and a few other. And they're drunk. I think they're, yeah, it ferments. They're drunk as hell. I remember I was watching Hamilton, you know, Hamilton that does all the drugs and whatever. I was watching his like one of his shows.

1:08:24I think it was on Vice or something. and he was literally in my neighborhood in Florida talking about psilocybin mushrooms and cow patties. So I had a cow field next to my, so I went out there and sure enough, there they are. I'm like, all right, you're going to be ready in like a week. So I'd come back, check every day. It's getting a little bigger. I'm like, oh, tomorrow I'm harvesting. You're going to be perfect. Come back. Somebody ate them. Somebody else was watching and ate at the same time. And I was like, okay, that's a coincidence. So every time I do it, I'm like looking for the squirrel up there who's going.

1:08:59Right. Because nature knows. Because they know. Nature knows. They know.

1:09:02Darin Olien:Like I was trying to grow like raspberries and strawberries outside of my greenhouse. Everybody ate them. And I'm doing the same thing. I'm watching them going, oh, it's almost there. And as soon as it's ready, it's like full on pop. You can watch chickens. You literally can put this into Google. Watch chickens. Just take the ripe berries versus the. yeah they know the redwoods it's like i used to watch my dog when in florida one of my dogs julene who's allergic to flea saliva she'll break out if one bites her um found the lemongrass plant and would eat the lemongrass and literally would show new dogs new rescues or borders anybody walk them over and i literally could if i could hear her she'd be going yeah and you eat this they won't bite you anymore they'd all be going and they'd smell it and then try it that's so Yeah, they're smart.

1:09:54They're connected. They know.

1:09:56Darin Olien:So once you got that research done, that's significant. I think it is. But like it's not hitting the, you know what I mean? Like when was that completed? We got it peer-reviewed in December of 2025. Okay, so it's not that long ago. But it is really, nobody cares. Right. It's really hard. First of all, so much research is bad. For instance, I just told you how they do it for animal drugs. I've heard human aren't any better. I used to have a colleague who was in the human pharmacy side, and I met her at a speaking gig in 2019. And I'm like, why is she over here in the animal side? Well, she had already been canceled and kicked out of the human side because she was a Merck C-suite employee who became a whistleblower.

1:10:50And she said on that stage in 2019, if I'm ever found dead they killed me and she was found dead that December swear to God and I'm getting the same threats it's really

1:11:08Darin Olien:just for doing the study and then for speaking out and having your podcast I've already been turned into the FDA the FDA actually wrote me something telling me that I couldn't do my podcast if i'm gonna talk about my cases i can't say these are the products i use yeah and i'm like i'm a literal clinician formulator journalist prodcaster and you're telling me that i can't talk about my cases and what i did in my formulas you get weird you know there's a someone i want you to talk to it's a really good friend i she's um i don't want another witch she's she's I'm trying to build a cover. Every once in a while.

1:11:51Darin Olien:I won't say her name just because I would like to get her permission before that, but she's a dear friend. Biophysicist in the 70s, 80s, and the FDA calls her. But she's one of the smartest people in the room and with a hippie heart, and she is my go-to. and I put her in touch every so often, it's funny, every so often, Dani will send me a message just to say, thank you so much for putting me in touch with Barbara. Because they now have their own bond. And so her ability, and offline we can get more into this, but her ability to navigate, because at the highest level, she can walk into a room and be respected.

1:12:46Darin Olien:and at the nutritional level, at research level, at FDA level, at insurance level, like you name it. She is like N of one, this person. Nice. And she is like exactly, and she can maybe even help because also she has clout in, she can go, okay, say this. I mean, do you know that our hemp and our homeopathy are under attack right now? Hemp is being banned in November. Homeopathy is like fighting for its existence. So they are quietly taking away our rights even more right now. Yes. I mean, that's literally, I'm on that fight then, because that's literally homeopathy has been the one, many things that have worked, and it's not just everything.

1:13:34Darin Olien:But it has profoundly helped. Right, because the body's like, thank you, I know what this is, and I can put this to use, and it's helping. I know. It's beautiful. And I want to get back on the full spectrum. So, well, let's, is there any way that people listening to this who love their animals, love their dogs, can help kind of bite this cause? Is there a way? Yeah, you can call your senators. Yeah, call the senators. These damn people. And fight. Start hoarding your medicine now. Right. I mean, I don't know what to say. I don't even, I can't even, do you understand like how many livelihoods this is going to destroy?

1:14:14Farmers, extractors, manufacturers, like it is so icky and corrupt and bad. And it's because the marijuana industry and the liquor industry are losing money. Every time a state becomes medically legal for marijuana, you know, gets the dispensaries or whatever, big pharma loses 1.5 to 2 % of their revenue every time a state becomes legal. They don't like that. That's millions. That's like 20 million, 50 million dollars that they're losing. So they now we look and our president has said, OK, we're deschedulizing cannabis, which sounds like great news, right? No, that's so the pharmaceutical companies can create pharmaceuticals out of it.

1:14:54That's what's happening. That's not good news. They're banning the stuff that's over the counter and works, not the shit that doesn't. They're only banning full-spectrum hemp extract, not broad, not isolates, because those don't work and they cause damage. So that's okay. That'll get them back to pharma. They're taking away the real stuff. They're trying to restrict your act. They already do. I became too loud, too many people, and helped too many people. I did not go there. I followed the hemp industry. I didn't follow FDA. I didn't even follow the animal supplement industry, nothing, because they're all corrupt.

1:15:32They don't care about the animal. It's a business to them.

1:15:35Darin Olien:Not on our watch. Not on my watch. This is what I will do. They are, again, often people's only access to unconditional love. I have felt it from animals and my soul dog. I'm still not over my soul dog being gone. And I know that they're so important. And what bothers me is the people that do go to the natural or holistic route, but then they end up with the wrong food, the wrong recipe, the wrong supplements, and they can't figure out what's wrong. And it's because they're over in the space. Like, I picked this space. I'm a cannabis, fungi, endocannabinoid expert clinician formulator. I chose animals because I thought I'd literally be around a bunch of hippies who love dogs.

1:16:24But instead, I'm surrounded by evil players who know people like us are going to spend more money on that natural stuff. And so they take full advantage of it. And they go, this has this much more curcumin in it. And we've paired it with pepper because that helps with absorption, right? No, not as well as ginger does. And it's an irritant to pets. So no, why is that in there? Why have you taken that human formulation that's now toxic with too much curcumin in it and now made it a pet product? And that happens all the time.

1:16:55Darin Olien:Yeah, and for humans too. Oh, yeah. like that the people are formulating the vet formulated the doctor formulated your vet and doctor doesn't know how to formulate products that work let's give people a top we don't need to have a number but five seven ten whatever three whatever the top things people can walk away from right now what what can they what can they do to better their pets regardless of age of course food so what do you what do you recommend on food what real food is real food is real food so if we're already knowing that we have to eat organic and we have to know where our food comes from same goes with them in my opinion if we're cooking for ourselves whatever you're cooking for yourself with the exception of like five things that dogs can't have they can eat it right um so i think diversity is good right we're not counting our nutrients and calories every day you don't need to do it with them if you're feeding them real food the kibble is not real food yeah kibble is a whole bunch of crap yeah and then they put synthetic vitamins and minerals on it yeah and And it's not real food.

1:18:11Know that you have a choice. Don't put anything in or on your pet that you don't research and make sure that it's worth the part.

1:18:21Darin Olien:Use AI properly. Exactly. And you've got to train your AI because your AI is going to go conventional. Totally. It's totally going to go, nope, FDA considers that safe and effective. What? Yep, nope, they did research and it proved this. How do you crack it? How do you crack it? tell it that I only want holistic. I only want organic. I only want here. I'll even give it to sources. So, um, my favorite resource for CBD is projectcbd.org. You can literally find products for now and you can find, you can literally type in, in the ailment and it will show you all the research that's been done already.

1:19:01That's what's so incredible is that, you know, I know there's a meme going around, like you just pop that pill. But the moment that I tell you cannabis will get rid of that pain you go where's the research oh it's done it's out there cancer project project CBD org and then of course ewg org is my favorite for products and cleaning products and personal care doesn't exist for dogs but I'll get around to that at some point and you said cancer you're gonna say something so cancer just cancer for instance operates through 12 signaling pathways cannabis alone has been proven to interact with eight of those pathways in more ways than one.

1:19:38And you add medicinal mushrooms and a right diet and some fasting, you really have a chance of getting ahead. We all have cancer cells in us. It's just a matter of not letting them take over the body and supporting the immune system to keep them at bay. So the research is out there. It's just not being talked about on the news or anywhere. It's only being brought up by people like us who have to go, did you know this was out there? And that it's not just it's real research they're not just trying to sell a product or a drug or anything like that so everything that you do for yourself and your family reading the labels that's a big one looking at not only the ingredients and understanding what they are but on that supplement label label there's something called other or inactive ingredients and that's where all it says inactive so you think it's not really doing anything oh no it's doing something right it's making your liver work over time.

1:20:33It's disrupting your gut. It's taking away your body's natural ability to keep you healthy and protected.

1:20:40Darin Olien:And then of course, get yourself a full spectrum, uh, hemp. Every senior human or animal should be on a full spectrum hemp extract. And then medicinal mushrooms are a dual, at least a dual extract because they are going to pair with that hemp for that cannabis and just really become powerful and synergistic adaptogens get in us we could have one formula and you and i could take it and it's going to do different things because it's adapting to what we need modulating that's so cool yeah yeah it's not suppressing the immune system like drugs do which is awful apiquil cytopoint even the the remodel they're all suppressing an action of the body that makes the body turn off the itch hemp does the same exact thing without disrupting the body it's modulating the immune system instead of ramping it or turning it off and then there's that synergy between the adaptogens or in this case other adaptogens and the hemp full spectrum hemp too so you get that multi-adaptive yeah it's like you go from Hemp by itself is like aspirin, you know, hemp with another adaptogen that's known for pain or inflammation, like a turmeric or frankincensex.

1:21:55Now you made that codeine, you know, by adding those two other adaptogens. With no side effects. No side effects. None. So it's except a really happy, you know, what I hear day after day is their puppy-like again. That's the most common thing we hear. They're playing with their toys again. they're sleeping through the night they're getting up on the couch again you know you can tell you can see them come back to life and feel good and i know what it feels like i know you know what it feels like it's a literally oh okay wow okay well you better make me a truckload of that stuff i

1:22:33Darin Olien:will it'll be my pleasure because i'm i'm gonna light these dogs up for sure good well thank you so much for the this is i think this is a start of uh us staying connected on this stuff and i can't wait to dive in more and obviously my jog has been on a journey so he's most have you know he's uh i will do ever anything all i do is look at people's vet records that they send to me and they'll be like is this drug bad and then i'm like i've just taken it the chat go here's the side effects here's what it does and then here's the plant or mushroom or food that will do I can't remember if I said it on the podcast.

1:23:12Reishi is a steroid. Oh, really? Silver hydrosol is the original antibiotic. A full-spectrum hemp extract is the original pain reliever. These have been used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

1:23:28Darin Olien:Some of the oldest, I remember looking at the oldest herbology in hemp was always there. Always. Yeah. Well, that's how I operate now. Start with that because it's going to help. It's the real OG. It is the real OG. Yeah, for sure. You're awesome. So do you. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Yeah, for sure.

What if everything you've been taught about caring for your dog needs a second look?

In this eye-opening conversation, Darin sits down with lifelong animal advocate, senior dog rescue operator, and canine wellness educator Angela Ardolino to explore the hidden forces shaping modern veterinary medicine. After both she and her beloved dog were diagnosed with degenerative diseases, Angela began questioning conventional treatments and discovered the transformative potential of full-spectrum hemp extract, medicinal mushrooms, species-appropriate nutrition, and addressing the root causes of disease.

Together they examine the influence of pharmaceutical companies and large pet food manufacturers on veterinary education, the importance of gut health, the endocannabinoid system, functional mushrooms, and Angela's groundbreaking clinical research on reversing canine cognitive dysfunction (dog dementia). Most importantly, they discuss how pet owners can become empowered advocates for the animals they love by making informed, holistic choices.

This conversation is a powerful reminder that true healing often begins by supporting the body's innate ability to restore balance.
