In short
Darren O’Lean discusses doubt as a constant mental “radio station,” arguing it never fully disappears and must be met with action, discipline, grief processing, and daily visualization.
Guest backgrounds
No guests are featured; it’s a solo episode by Darren O’Lean.
Key claims
Doubt is fear/ego trying to control outcomes, not intuition. The antidote is “do it anyway,” gather information, surround yourself with good people, and visualize/feel the desired future daily. Even setbacks can unlock deeper healing and growth; sometimes you receive what you need rather than what you want.
Notable examples
Career-ending college football back injury (tore back; depression; later built a self-designed study path in physiology/nutrition/kinesiology). Business doubts: Barucas Brazil nut venture since 2009 with no profit. Woolsey fire (2018) destroying his home while he was filming in Peru; he rebuilt for seven years from a yurt, weeks from finishing a guest house.

0:32Darin Olien:One of the biggest questions I get constantly is, Darren, where can I find the best non-toxic cookware? Listen, I don't mess around with things that go ultimately in my body. And that includes what I cook with. That's why I swear by Our Place. Because from day one, they've been committed to making clean, healthy, non-toxic cookware. and kitchenware. No sketchy coatings, no forever chemicals, just pure conscious design that are beautiful as well as highly functional. I've been using their titanium always pan for months now. It's the only pan I cook with and here's why. Pure titanium, non-toxic PFAS free.
1:27Darin Olien:Extremely durable, metal utensils, high heat, dishwasher safe. This thing can handle it all. All in one performance. The best stainless steel cast iron nonstick in a single pan. And here's the real kicker. Most nonstick pans, they're still loaded with PFAS, these forever chemicals that break down in your body and stay in your body, and they accumulate over time. We just don't need that. They disrupt the gut microbiome, testosterone, dysregulation, metabolic issues, hormone imbalances, immune dysfunction, and chronic inflammation they contribute to. Think about it. Every time you cook, you could be introducing toxins into your body, and the simple act of switching to safe cookware eliminates that.
2:17Darin Olien:This is why it's the easiest, most powerful change you can make, certainly in your kitchen, for long-term health and the elimination of toxic exposure. So Our Place is having their biggest sale of the year. 35 % all site-wide products through January 12th. So head over to fromourplace.com forward slash Darren and see why over a million people have made the switch to Our Place Kitchenware. Hey everybody, welcome to the show.
3:08This is Darren O 'Lean and this is the Super Life Podcast. This is going to be a different episode. Maybe sometimes I say that, but this time is actually true. Instead of researching a subject, I'm going to open up and try to be vulnerable with you. Some of it is going to be steered around doubt and some of the things that have happened in my life that I have used to overcome and some things I'm right in the middle of. And maybe my hope is that you gain something from this episode through the lens of understanding a little more about me and a little more about the challenges I've had and the things that I did to overcome them.
3:48The first thing I wanna talk about is, and some of these questions some people gave, and so I'm adding a few questions in here to invoke some of these responses. And one is, when did I realize that doubt doesn't really go away? And that is a very interesting thing. Do you have doubt? And sometimes we think that successful people don't have doubt, but that's not true at all. Everyone you see, I don't care who it is, has doubt. Everyone, including you. And these are products of this mind, of kind of this experiment that we're in, this life, and any of us who have achievements, we want to have things that we want to put in the world and also in relationship and all kinds of relationships.
4:37You may doubt someone loves you. You may doubt that an idea could exist in the world. You may doubt yourself on a regular basis. I guarantee that that is part of what is happening. So if any of anyone, any self-help anyone says that there is no doubt crossing the mind, then that's BS. It's just not true. And I know, and I'm going to explore more as we get into this episode, but I, putting my hand up, I have doubt every single day. And especially the more and more that I've done and the more and more that I want to put in the world, certainly the more and more on my heart that feels so big, I have extreme doubt.
5:26And some of the only ways to overcome that is do it anyway. Create discipline, focus, and do it in spite of the doubt that's playing in your mind like a radio station. And over time, that will go away through information gathering, through good people around you, to taking action towards anything will lessen the doubt that you may be having. I'm going to explain a few things that I've had to overcome. Some of you maybe I've heard on other podcasts, but I had a career-ending football injury in college, and I was grateful to be starting as my sophomore year as a fullback, beating out a lot of people that were bigger and stronger and faster.
6:19And I beat them out. I'm stoked. First season of the year, I tore something in my back and that was the end. That was the end of my career. And I couldn't get back on the field. And that depression, what was I feeling at that time? You know, your world ends. You have to grieve through those things. And I don't think it's good to harbor resentments in that because that's unrecognized grief and unacknowledged isness of the situation. If you don't take in that situation, this is what happened and own that. It's hard to grieve through it. And then you end up living in the past because emotionally you've shut yourself off and you have an accepted reality.
7:06In that process will also create resentments, anger, fear. So maybe you even thinking right now of things that you haven't quite let go, that you wanted to be different than what it was. These are opportunities to accept, feel. When my career ended playing football, I was really depressed. I transferred colleges and then I started saying, well, I want to learn about this body. And it was the first time professionally, I started to grab and grasp the idea that I was interested in something for me that potentially I could then learn about and create a career from. Didn't know what that was going to be like, but it was that coming together instead of just grabbing a major that I didn't give a shit about.
7:58It was now collapsing the worlds of me understanding this is something I'm interested in because I need it. I was injured. I wasn't getting back on the field. But I needed to grieve through that process and grieving through it created the opening for me to realize that, wow, I can learn about this body. So I studied physiology and nutrition and kinesiology and athletic training and kind of created my own major at university and changed my life. I got fascinated with the body and fascinated with nutrition. And then later, I figured it out. I never set out to go down a normal path. I was always checking into what I really wanted to do.
8:50So the event I wish didn't happen at the time, I'm glad it did happen as my life unfolded and the rest is history. I have another question here. Was there a moment in that healing process from my back where you genuinely didn't know if it would work? Yeah. Acutely, when I was trying to heal my lower back, it didn't work and I couldn't get on the field. So the realization that it wasn't working was really within six months and then I had to basically retire from football. That's when the depression really set in. When I was still training with the team, still trying to get on the field, but couldn't get on the field and really play again.
9:34That's over time I realized it wasn't working. Now, cut to this injury has been around with me for the last 30 years. Still is giving me some issues and still unfolding some opportunities. And I'm not going to get into all of the somatic work, but just to give you a little bit, this back injury unlocked unworthiness. It unlocked birth trauma. It unlocked relationships with my dad, my mom. What I grew up in was very, wasn't the safest emotionally to grow up in. So this back represented more than just this acute injury. It represented so much more. So it keeps giving, even though I don't want the pain, the pain keeps revealing and peeling this onion.
10:25So I'm going to go back into doubt a little more and approach it from this other angle. And the question is, have you ever built something you were deeply proud of and watched it not happen? Yeah, several times. One of the things that comes to mind is this nut out of the savanna of Brazil called Barucas. We're still selling it at barucas.com, B-A-R-U-K-A-S.com, the greatest nut in the world, most nutrient-dense nut in the world. I started doing it in 2009, discovered it through some connections, Brazilian friends, discovered this, the most amazing tasting nutrient-dense nut in the world. And it's still, you know, through different business partners and very challenging, straining relationships very difficult getting that nutrient dense nut from the savannah of brazil to the united states at a price that people will buy over and over again a lot of challenges i've never made a dollar not one cent on this product since 2009 and we're still selling it like i said we have some uh issues that we're working out so i'm not pushing it every day at all.
11:42We're waning on a few things, but we're still selling this nut and it's still supporting people in Brazil. But, you know, from superfood hunting for 15 years, this was one of the great discoveries that I had to bring to the world and me to be able to bring it to the world and to have it not really get out in the way that I want it has been very, very challenging. Again, And it's unsustainable for me to not make any money on it. In fact, we lose. We have lost a lot of money. So that's one. Another one is more recently, and that is really...
12:20Darin Olien:Before we continue the pod, I want to share something. I've tried so many supplements. I've been in the space for 25 years. And every so often, something really pops out. Monovitality is that difference. It's not just about adding minerals. It's about tuning your body to a higher frequency, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Because this is the mana from the earth, the shilajit, the ormus minerals, and so on. There's so much going on with this brand. I'm so excited. Beyond the shilajit, they're expanding into other elementals. The brand is built on ancient alchemy with ingredients like gold nanoparticles, beta-glucans, shilajit, ormus, all geared to elevate you.
13:10Darin Olien:Especially in today's world, you need bioavailable, a bio-delivery system that upgrades your body from the inside out. Every formula is frequency charged to promote balanced energy immune system and cellular renewal. And the wild part, the more consistently you take it, the more you feel everything in your body. It's the same with me. The more I use it, the better I feel. My sleep improved. My skin glows. My stress goes down. My testosterone goes off. It's like my whole system is humming again. So if you're tired of low energy, brain fog, and or just not feeling the same and like something's missing, check out Mana.
13:57Darin Olien:Go to manavitality.com. That's M-A-N-N-A vitality.com. Use the code Darren20 and you get 20 % off your order. This isn't about health. It's about living in harmony with your greatest and highest potential. Building a community. The Superlife community that I've started on Patreon. You know, building a community online is kind of weird. There's great ways to do that and share information. And that's why I kind of pulled it off of social media so that we can build with like-minded people. I want to build it even more. And it's proven to be a little challenging because it's another thing to do. And I'm very, very busy.
14:42So, you know, when you build anything, none of my careers has ever been a straight road. Superfood hunting, I got successful at it because I got hired to do it. And I created an amazing product called Shakeology and it sold$5 billion in sales and it's still selling to this day. So it helped fuel my passion for traveling and finding new stuff. But sometimes these things just don't work out. And Baruca's currently hasn't sustainably worked out so well. And it certainly hasn't sold the millions and millions and millions of pounds of brew nuts that I want to sell to help that area, to support the people and to get you and customers nutrient dense deliciousness.
15:33So that's a challenge. And I think the other one to bring up, and you've probably heard this before, is the doubts around rebuilding my home and my property after the fire in 2018, the Woolsey fire. And more specifically, someone asked, what was it like the first 24 hours after you found out? Now, I was away. I was in the Amazon in Peru filming down to earth with Zac Efron. And we were there and we had a few more days left of filming. And I found out, but we were coming out of the Amazon to go back to a bigger city. not big city at all but a city close to the the mouth of the major rivers when i found out i lost my house i was in shock and because i was away so i didn't i saw it online that there was a fire but i wasn't personally here so it's a different experience when you're not dealing with it so i wasn't here and i knew my dog was safe chaga at the time but it's a shocking feeling you know you know there's no there's no place where you can grok it and it just would hit in ways so the first 24 hours I was still filming and I was just like oh I just was kind of repeating myself oh my god I lost everything I lost it was dawning on me that I didn't have anything anymore the only thing I had was the suitcase that I was traveling with and luckily I'd driven one of my cars to the airport, but it was dawning on me that everything I've lost and all my heirlooms to my family and all pictures and any valuables that I had in my home that I worked so hard to get and barns and trucks and everything else, it's slowly starting to hit you.
17:27But since I was so far away, that grief takes years sometimes. And I chose to come back on the property to rebuild. And as I'm recording this right now, I'm weeks away from finally my major guest house will be erected and I will move in there. So it's a powerful moment. But the point of this is as soon as I was grieving, I would start getting these flashes of what I wanted to create on this property, this incredible piece of property that burned to the ground. And how do I want to live? What's the opportunity? Can I build in a healthy way? And I can't wait to share more of that with you. What building materials I'm using and a healthy home and all of these things.
18:16Holding that vision through seven years and being in 400 square feet in a yurt, I did not expect. I thought it would be two years at most, but through all of the challenges and lawsuits and bureaucratic hoops that I've had to jump through and money and time, so much time, so much money, I made a choice every day. You know, I asked myself, am I going to, should I leave? Should I sell it? Should I, but I just kept going back to, I have a vision. I want to stubbornly get to that vision. So I'm on the way. And I doubted a billion times, one billion times I've doubted the process. But every time I replace that with an action and a mindfulness and a visualization, visualization has been one of the greatest things because I see myself in the guest house right now.
19:19I see myself in the main house. I can feel it. I can see myself drinking a tea and a cacao drink and petting my dogs and getting out of bed. That has been my medicine. So when doubt comes in, this is a takeaway for you. when doubt comes in towards anything that you want in your, whatever your dreams are, fill it full of, observe it. It's there. It's always going to be there. Fill it full of visualization of what you want and let yourself feel that. Let yourself truly feel that. See it. Experience it. Take five minutes a day, 10 minutes a day, write it down. That is an antidote for doubt. So even though I wouldn't have chosen seven years, I will not take this back.
20:11This has been a powerful healing, extremely painful in that healing, seeing things about myself and the opportunities have been massive. This was, I wanted to quit a million times. I had a billion doubts, but I decided to keep going and holding that vision and visualizing, visualizing what I wanted. And now getting to get just to the other side, starting to get a road redone and the house being built and all of that stuff. I'm in this place where I start to get to share that, share that with you, share that with myself, share that with my dogs, be in that dream. And the dream's not done. The dream is, keeps going.
20:54So those are some things. And I just want to say, you know, there's another question here that says, does doubt still visit you regularly? Every day, every day, it's a practice. And sometimes we visualize and we want something. Sometimes it doesn't work. Sometimes it doesn't get there. Sometimes it doesn't mature in the way that we want it to mature. But sometimes it's none of our business to try to create what we want and the universe and God is only giving you what you need. So the practice of that going, okay, serve me up. What am I here to learn? How can I grow? Another question is how do you tell the difference between doubt that's trying to protect you and doubt that's trying to shrink you?
21:38I mean, doubt is different than intuition and awareness. Doubt is of the mind. Doubt is fear. Doubt is part of the consciousness of this head that wants to control everything and the ego and thinks it can control the universe and force things to get what you want. It doesn't work that way. Being intentional is great, but the difference is in your heart, feeling that and then trusting yourself. That's a different feeling and leaning into that and trusting no matter what happens, I'll get exactly what I need and maybe I won't always get what I want. And that's a practice. So no matter where you're at right now, no matter who you see as successful, they all have doubts like you.
22:25The difference is they take steps towards what they want over the doubt. So they're giving strength to a part of themselves. They're doing mental, physical, spiritual push-ups towards what they want through that discipline and not caving to the doubt and telling a story. See, I can't get there. Oh, it's too hard. My mom and my dad, my partner won't let me. Whatever that damn story is, that's a story. Be the creator of your story. What story do you want to create? Will you have doubt moving forward on that? Yes. Then do it Anyway, that's the difference. I've lived an extraordinary life and I have so much yet to do.
23:12Some of my biggest goals are yet to be even accomplished. And I have more fear and doubt than ever because the more I've accomplished, the more I want to continue to make myself better and give it a shot to make this world better. And that is, and in that, I have a lot of goals. sovereignty, water, power, food, shelter, health, freedom, all of that. I want to go for it. So this is an interesting episode, right? And I hope you gained something from that. And the mastery is not letting doubt fill your cup, but let your actions, your discipline, and your heart take the steps to create the life you want and fill it up that way.
24:00Because why not? This is it. This is life. What What kind of super life do you want to create? Peace. I love you. Go kick some ass.

Key Takeaway
"Doubt isn't something you eliminate, it's something you move through. Every single person you admire feels it. The difference is, they don't let it decide for them. They take action anyway. And when you replace doubt with vision, discipline, and consistent action… you don't just quiet the noise—you start creating the life you actually want."
