In short

The episode argues that modern life keeps people “stuck” through five “silent diseases” of disconnection: numbness (inflammation/flat affect), disconnection (chronic stress/loneliness), distraction (screen-lit mind/never quiet), comparison (highlight reels/psychological cruelty), and forgetting (ignoring body needs/mission). It claims loneliness and disconnection harm physical health (heart disease, stroke, dementia risk) and that ultra-processed food, nutrient-depleted soil, and heavy social media use contribute to chronic conditions and anxiety/depression.

0:32Darin Olien:I'd like to take a quick break from this episode to thank our sponsor, Fatty15. That's right. I want to talk about something that isn't talked about enough, keeping our cells healthy. Here's what I'm doing now to prioritize cellular health, supplementing with this new exciting research, and it's called Fatty15. Fatty 15 has three times more cellular benefit than omega-3s or fish oil. This is dietary odd chain saturated fatty acids, OCFAs. There are present trace levels in dietary fat, some fish, and plants. Higher circulating concentrations of this OCFS. we realize through the research that higher circulating concentrations of this is extremely good for us.

1:28Darin Olien:It is called pentadonic chaotic acid or C15. Omega-3 fish oils and algae oils often go bad before they're even in the bottle. That's right. They're susceptible to oxygen and sunlight and the supplements can't even help to improve our health usually. But fatty 15 or C15 naturally protects against damaging oxidation both in the bottle and in your body. If you want to get a little more science-y about it, studies show that C15 works by strengthening our cells, improving our mitochondria function, and protecting us against damage from free radicals on a very deep level. The result? Better long-term metabolic liver and heart health functioning.

2:18Darin Olien:It ends up many of us are massively deficient in C15, which results in weaker and weaker cells that makes us have less energy and we quit working earlier. We're seeking to find that energy. Where is it? All of this makes us age faster and faster, and the science around this is so fascinating. We sleep poorly, we feel sluggish, and we're all looking to feel better and have more energy. Does it sound familiar? Fatty 15 is science-backed, award-winning, vegan-friendly, and pure C15 supplement. That's it. By replenishing ourselves with this newly discovered C15, the nutrient of fatty 15 effectively repairs our cells and restores our long-term health.

3:15Darin Olien:That's when you have to celebrate science. When science discovers something sitting there all along. After 90 years of discovering essential fatty acids like omega-3, 6, and 9, we now have discovered this incredible odd chain saturated fat C15. Fatty15 is on a mission to replenish your C15 levels and restore your long-term health. And I'm with them in that. You can get an additional 15 % off your 90-day subscription starter kit by going to Fatty15, F-A-T-T-Y-1-5.com slash Darren, D-A-R-I-N, or use the code Darren, D-A-R-I-N, at checkout. 4:13Hey everybody, welcome to the show. I want to start with something true, and I want you to sit down, if you can, and just take this in for a second. Right now, today, about one in five adults in this country feel lonely. Not sad, not busy, but lonely every single day. Not once in a while, every day. And loneliness isn't just an emotional weather pattern. it raises your risk of heart disease by nearly a third. It raises your risk of stroke by even more than that. For older adults, it roughly doubles the odds of developing dementia. So let's just let that sink in. The U.S. Surgeon General put it plainly.

5:00Being disconnected from other people is now doing to your body something close to that what smoking a pack of cigarettes does every day. So let that land. We're going to move in this episode in an interesting way. So hook in and hold on. We are the most connected generation in history of the species. Everyone is in your pocket all the time. And we are lonelier and lonelier and lonelier. This is not a coincidence. This is a signal. This is information. And this episode is about that signal, what it's actually pointing at, and what you and I are going to do about it in the next 20 minutes. Okay, so here's what nobody wants to say out loud.

5:53Most of us are not even living. We're maintaining. We're managing inboxes, managing symptoms, scratching by, working so hard, managing a low hum, constant anxiety. And so I don't think that's your personal failure. I think it's the predictable result of a handful of systems working exactly as they're designed, just not designed for you and me. Start with what's in your body. More than half of the calories the average person in this country eats, which is about 55%, come from ultra-processed food. For kids, it's even worse. It's about 62%. That's not a moral failing. That's a food system failing.

6:46And it's landed us here right now in this world, in this society. Over three out of the four adults now live with at least one chronic condition. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, diabetes. 194 million people. Not an outlier, is it? It's the norm. And it's projected to nearly double again by 2050, if nothing changes. Now let's go one layer deeper to the soil itself. Multiple studies compare crops today to crops 50 to 70 years ago found that the same fruits and vegetables now carry 10 to 15 % things like iron, zinc, calcium, and other key vitamins that used to be there but now isn't.

7:41The food isn't just processed more. The real food is quietly less nutrient dense. We're depleting the ground the same way we're depleting ourselves. You know this, but I'm illuminating it in a different way. And then there's the mind. Teenagers spend more than three hours a day on social media and roughly twice as likely to struggle with anxiety, depression. So the kids here in the highest usage rate of the screen times is it's nearly three times the rate of those who aren't. and this is generational our kids it's shaping their nervous systems the kids the then adults who will grow up to try to live in this life so depleted soils depleted food depleted attention depleted connection four different headlines one story we built a world that is remarkably good at keeping us occupied and remarkably bad at keeping us alive.

8:50I knew for me when I got into this world, you know, from my career ending football injury, but then when I started studying nutrition, physiology, kinesiology, all that stuff, I started to see these patterns. Why I even got into superfood hunting is because supplements were horrible. They were marketing something to try to fill in the gaps of our world, and yet they were not holding up in terms of testing and what was actually there. So I got into that world going, I always want people to thrive. I want us to live. I want us to thrive in a powerful way. I want us to live a super life. I've come to think of it as the five silent diseases, not diseases in the clinical sense of the word, obviously, diseases of disconnection.

9:44Each one has a physical root and a psychological twin. And once you see the pairing, you can't unsee. So number one, numbness. The body's version of this is inflammation from food that isn't really food. It's this highly processed stuff. The mind's version is emotional flatness going through your days without really feeling them, just kind of numb going through it. The fix isn't more willpower. It's more truth. What you actually put in your body changes what you're capable of feeling. Number two, disconnection. Physically, it's nervous system stuck in low-grade stress. never really feeling fully rested.

10:38And psychologically, it's the loneliness we opened with, surrounded by people, starved for real contact. The fix is not more contacts in your phone. It's fewer. It's deeper. It's eye to eye. Third, distraction. Our body's version is a screen lit brain that never gets bored, never gets quiet, never gets to actually digest a thought. The fix is boredom on purpose, like be bored. Let your brain figure it out. Real boredom is where your best ideas and your honest feelings can percolate, can come to the surface. Number four, comparison. The one's almost entirely psychological, and it might be the cruelest of the five, because we're measuring our entire textured, complicated life against someone else's highlight reel.

11:48The fix is remembering that a feed is not life. It's a performance, a performed one. And number five, forgetting. This is the deepest one. Forgetting that you are underneath everything. The job, the roles, the noise, a body that needs sun and movement and real food, a nervous system that needs connection, and a heart that has something specific it came here to do. Your mission, your vision. Most people don't need more information or new information. They need to remember something they've already blown off or brushed off. None of these five are necessarily your fault. All five are your responsibility to address.

12:39Those are two very different things because one creates a victim and the other creates power, power to choose. So I want to do something a little different for the next 90 seconds.

12:55Darin Olien:I'd like to take a moment to mention my amazing sponsors, the company Body at Shakeology, my baby, who I helped to formulate way back in 2006. Most people think of a protein shake as a quick fix, but Shakeology, because I know, was built with a completely different intention. It's superfoods. It's nutrient density. It's a superfood nutrition shake where quality actually comes first. I know this firsthand. When you talk about the quality story, we're talking about a refusal to take shortcuts. While most of the industry uses generic blends to cut costs, every single ingredient in Shakeology literally is individually researched, vetted, and sourced from global partners all over the world who meet the strictest standards of purity and sustainability.

13:50Darin Olien:We're talking about seven layers of testing. These are not just words. This is actual. from the raw ingredients to the finished bag to ensure that what's on the label is exactly what's in your glass. There are no artificial sweeteners, no fake flavors, no compromises. It's measurable quality that evolves with science. Experience the difference for yourself. I still drink this every single day. Head to Shakeology.com and use the promo code DarrenO, D-A-R-I-N-O, 1, body, B-O-D-I, for 15 % off your order. That's Darren, D-A-R-I-N, the letter O, the number 1, body, B-O-D-I, to get 15 % off. I can't wait for you to try it.

14:41The next 90 seconds, wherever you are, driving, walking on a couch, just let your shoulders drop. Literally. Take a deep breath in and let them drop. Take a deep breath through your nose and let it go. Slower than you think. And then pause on the top for five seconds. Inhale in the nose. Hold for five.

15:13exhale. You can do that at any time. Now just ask yourself one question and you don't have to answer it out loud or even answer it all right now. What is the one true thing you've been avoiding? What is the thing that makes your heart sore when you think about it? You don't have to solve it today, but the things that you're avoiding could be the gateway. You just have to stop pretending you don't know. One of the great questions from a great guy, his name is Gary Douglas. He said, what do you know that you're pretending not to know? That if you were to know it, would change your reality. We offload our knowing.

15:59We're distracted in this world of algorithms, social media, the news, other people's thoughts, feelings, emotions all the time? What if you became silent for a bit throughout the day, tuned into your breath, started listening to your heart because that can change everything. So this is what I'm asking. I don't want you to wait another day where you don't live your life. I want you to take that on right now. What do you want? Who are you? What are you pretending not to know? What do you really, really, truly desire? What have you been unwilling to acknowledge about yourself and your life that if you were to acknowledge it would change your life?

16:48Also, there's a few more things you could do, literally do you could better your health right now i dare you eat one real thing today if you're already in the health kick great but eat a whole food it doesn't need to be perfect but one meal one thing real food no packaging that's how you change your life number two have one real conversation this week, not a text. Call someone. Sit down with them. Tell them what you're feeling, who you are, what your dreams are. Give them the chance to do the same. This single action will create connection, depth, love. Number three, take a two-hour window and put the phone somewhere you can't see it, let yourself sit there.

17:47You can meditate if you want, but don't fill the space with anything. Be bored. Watch your mind. And that space will open up other things, will open up who you are. Number four, write down the one true thing from that stillness exercise, not to fix it, not to conclude it, not to make up a story. But sometimes we lie to ourselves about what we are, who we are, what we want, but being honest with what comes up. Do one thing today or this week that moves you towards the life you actually want, not the one you've been managing. What is your dreams? One of mine is something I'm doing right now. It's doing a docuseries on happiness.

18:38And if I didn't do this exercise, if I didn't do these things to become silent in the not doing anything so that messages could come to me, I wouldn't be able to take action that I never even occurred was there. Start small. What do you want? What do you desire? What does your heart yearn for? Stop avoiding it. Walk into it. Just say yes. Those things are simple things. But if you don't do them, nothing changes. But if you're willing to, you'll have greater connection to yourself, to your body, raise attention of the moment, be present, and you be honest with yourself. And you then get to take action on that.

19:29Nobody needs elaborate system, but you can do something powerfully just by actually being. So here's what I actually believe. Nobody is disconnected because they're not broken. People are disconnected because the world got very good at keeping them busy. But if you slowed the busy, stopped the busy, you could gain and garner so much more. today by you, starting with one real thing, one real meal, one real conversation, and one of you being honest about what you want and then write it down, you start to create a different life. I promise. You didn't come here to just manage your life and exist.

20:20You came here to live on purpose and to live a dynamic, beautiful life. I believe that, and that's what I choose. Are you in? Because I am. If you were moved by this episode and you want to pass this on, if you got anything from it, please give a comment, share your insight on social, tag us, share this episode. Together, we come together to make the world literally a better place.

From the publisher

What if the biggest threats to your health aren't diseases in the traditional sense—but invisible patterns of disconnection that quietly shape every aspect of your life?

In this thought-provoking solo episode, Darin explores what he calls the Five Silent Diseases: numbness, disconnection, distraction, comparison, and forgetting who you truly are. Drawing on research surrounding loneliness, chronic disease, ultra-processed foods, nutrient depletion, social media, and nervous system health, he reveals how modern systems have become remarkably efficient at keeping us busy, distracted, and disconnected from ourselves.

More importantly, Darin offers a roadmap back—through real food, meaningful relationships, intentional stillness, honest self-reflection, and daily practices that reconnect us to purpose. This isn't about adding more information to your life. It's about remembering what you've always known and finally acting on it.

You weren't born to simply manage your life—you were born to truly live it.

 Key Takeaway

"The greatest threat to your health isn't simply what you eat or how much you exercise—it's how disconnected you've become from yourself. Modern life constantly pulls your attention outward, leaving little room to notice what your body, your heart, and your intuition have been trying to tell you all along. Healing begins when you slow down enough to listen. One real meal. One meaningful conversation. One moment of stillness. One honest decision. Those small acts don't just change your day—they change the trajectory of your life."
