Episode Overview
Episode Title
The Inflammation Conspiracy: What If Your Body Isn't Broken? Key Theme: Challenging the mainstream notion that inflammation is inherently harmful and emphasizing its role as a vital response mechanism of the body.
---
Key Concepts Discussed
- Understanding Inflammation
- Inflammation as a Response: Inflammation is described as the body's emergency response system, activated by threats like pathogens, toxins, or injury.
- Acute vs Chronic Inflammation:
- Acute Inflammation: Short-term, necessary for healing.
- Chronic Inflammation: Long-term, indicating that triggers have not been addressed.
- The Mechanisms Behind Inflammation
- Inflammation triggers a cascade of immune responses involving cytokines and other molecules, which serve to protect and heal the body.
- Specialized molecules like resolvins help to turn off inflammation once healing is achieved.
- Misconceptions About Inflammation
- Common narrative suggests inflammation is the disease, but it is often a symptom indicating underlying issues like poor diet or stress.
- Chronic inflammation is linked to major diseases (e.g., heart disease, diabetes), but is a sign of the body's ongoing response to continuous threats.
---
Identified Drivers of Chronic Inflammation
- Gut Health
- The gut microbiome's diversity is crucial for maintaining a healthy immune response.
- Disruption from processed foods and stress can lead to "leaky gut," allowing toxins into the bloodstream and triggering inflammation.
- Dietary Factors
- Modern Western diets, high in omega-6 fatty acids and refined sugars, exacerbate inflammation.
- The ideal omega-6 to omega-3 ratio has shifted from 4:1 to closer to 20:1 in many diets, increasing inflammatory responses.
- Psychological Stress
- Chronic psychological stress impacts the HPA axis, leading to persistent inflammation.
- The gut-brain connection highlights how mental health is intertwined with physical health.
- Sleep Disruption
- Sleep is essential for immune function and inflammation regulation. Poor sleep leads to increased inflammatory markers.
- Environmental Toxins
- Toxins such as PFAS and microplastics trigger immune responses, leading to inflammation.
---
Ancient Wisdom vs Modern Medicine
- Ancient systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine have long understood inflammation as a sign of imbalance, focusing on restoring health rather than merely suppressing symptoms.
---
The Role of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
- Concerns About NSAIDs: While effective for acute pain management, their chronic use can delay healing and lead to further complications by damaging gut lining and increasing inflammation.
---
Practical Steps to Manage Inflammation
- Diet: Focus on whole, diverse, and fiber-rich foods. Minimize ultra-processed products and sugars.
- Gut Care: Identify and eliminate factors damaging gut health; incorporate fermented foods.
- Stress Management: Engage in breath work, meditation, and community-building activities.
- Sleep Hygiene: Aim for consistent, restorative sleep.
- Regular Movement: Incorporate daily physical activity to release anti-inflammatory agents.
- Minimize Toxin Exposure: Use non-toxic cookware and eat organic where possible.
---
Conclusion Darin Olien emphasizes that inflammation is not an enemy but a vital communication from the body. True healing requires understanding the underlying triggers rather than merely suppressing the inflammatory response. By addressing these root causes, individuals can foster better health and well-being.
---
Key Takeaway Inflammation signals that the body is responding to stress, toxins, or injury. The journey to healing begins with understanding these signals and removing the sources of disruption rather than silencing the body's warning system.

It's about living in harmony with your greatest and highest potential.
2:24Darin Olien:is never wrong. And I absolutely believe that. Today, we need to talk about this thing, this inflammation that you hear all the time. Suppress it, push it, get rid of it, all of these things. But maybe that's not correct. Maybe inflammation is misunderstood. Maybe we need to have an intervention because suppressing something that the body is doing for a reason may not be the right way to go. This topic is important. You've heard it a thousand times, anti-inflammatory diets, anti-inflammatory pills, anti-inflammatory everything. But here is what is not being talked about enough and what the research actually is saying and confirming.
3:12Darin Olien:Your body does not make mistakes. I recently, I'll reveal more. I'll have them on my podcast, but this incredible researcher out of Norway, told me this one thing that changed it all for me. When he looks at biomarkers, a million different biomarkers for every patient, he has never seen the body make a mistake. It's just a matter of understanding why it's doing what it's doing. And sometimes we need to look at the big picture and get enough data points to understand that. Every time inflammation shows up in your body, I mean, every time, every time, it's there for a reason, not just to get rid of it, but it's there for a reason.
3:54Darin Olien:So think about that for a second. This incredible vehicle that we have, that we get to play around with, that I consciously am talking and I get to use while we're living on this incredible planet has an intelligence. And that intelligence is protective. It's biological, it's chemical, it's mysterious. Inflammation is not a bug. It is not a malfunction. function it's your body talking to you and what modern medicine has largely trained us to do is reach for the pill because our body needs to shut up right how many times you've had something oh my god the body is doing so the body's wrong the body's thing it's got this condition it's got this autoimmune thing it's just a catch-all phrase for the doctor not knowing what the hell's going on.
4:42Darin Olien:So without ever asking why, it was speaking to us in the first place. That is the conspiracy. I don't like to use that term because I think that term is being thrown around and it's weird and good and it's truly conspiracies and all that stuff, but I'm being jest. But I'm also being very clear. So today we're going to blow this thing wide open. You ready? You ready to blow this thing wide open with the science, with ancient wisdom, and with practical common sense and truth? I believe we can change our health forever when we understand what is going on. So let's go. Okay, so the biology, what is really happening?
5:20Darin Olien:First, let's understand the mechanism. Because when you understand it, you will never see inflammation the same again, I promise. Inflammation is your body's emergency response system, okay? The moment your body detects a threat, whether it's a pathogen, a toxin, damaged tissue, cellular stress, it fires up a cascade of chemical messengers. There's all kinds of things you don't need to know, but there's cytokines, chemokines, prostaglandins, NFKB pathways, activate, all of this stuff that you don't have to know. But I got all this stuff in the research and in the show notes. The immune cells flood the scene, blood vessels dilate, the area gets hot, it gets red, it gets swollen, that voltage actually goes up, the electrical forces help to bring healing things, and it's also painful.
6:16Darin Olien:It's telling you, whoa, man, something's going on, slow down, I'm trying to heal. And here is what every single one of those symptoms is. Heat kills pathogens. Swelling delivers healing compounds. Pain makes you rest the injury and pay attention. Even the symptoms you hate are doing a job. And we're going to unpack this. One of the most important papers on this topic in modern science, I believe, was published in Nature in 2008 by immunologist Ruslan Medzutov. I don't even know how to pronounce his name. His conclusion was groundbreaking. Inflammation is not just a defense mechanism. It is a fundamental program underlying a huge variety of physiological processes, tissue maintenance, repair, metabolic regulation, not just fighting infections.
7:13And critically, the body has its own off switch as well. Specialized molecules, this is interesting, called resolvins, protectins, and maresins are produced to send the stand-down signal once the job is done. Now, this is key. The body was designed to start, do the work, and then stop. A 2025 study from University College London identified small fat molecules, epoxy, oxylipins, that naturally regulate the immune cells response for winding down inflammation. Your body built in the resolution. It is a complete program. There are two kinds of inflammation. I want to be very clear about this. There's acute inflammation.
8:03So that is short term, targeted, proportional. You know, you sprain your ankle. I've done that so many times. It swells. You get a cut. It gets red and warm. This is heroic biology. You want your body to do this. People with impaired inflammation or inflammatory responses are more vulnerable to illness, not less. Now, there's chronic inflammation. It is stuck. It's like chronic inflammation is like a stuck alarm clock. It just keeps going and going and going and it doesn't get shut off. It's what happens when your body's warning system just stays on and not because the body is broken, but because the trigger of it has yet to be identified or removed.
8:50like the food you're eating, the reaction you're getting from that, the chemicals you're being exposed to and from, the stress that you have both physiologically or biologically, the sleeplessness, the disrupted gut. Your body keeps fighting because the threat has never gone away yet. And this is very important. And chronic low-grade inflammation is now linked by research to virtually every major disease we face. That's powerful. Heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, depression, autoimmunity. And keep in mind, this is not the cause of these diseases in isolation, but as the body's ongoing response to the conditions that create them.
9:41We don't yet know why or how to shut them off. So the inflammation stays. is that inflammation is a symptom of the disruption, not the disease itself. That distinction is everything. Okay, so if chronic inflammation is persistent and it keeps signaling this persistent threat, the question we need to be obsessed with is what the hell's going on? What's the threat? So let me give you five big ones to get your head around this. Now, there's the gut. This is a growing, growing issue. And this happens a lot for all of us, and sometimes you don't know until it becomes a bigger wildfire in your gut. More than 70 % of your immune system lives in your gut.
10:27When your microbiome is healthy and diverse, i.e. getting a lot of fiber, diversity of food, it produces short-chain fatty acids that actively reduce inflammatory signals, and then it maintains the integrity of the gut lining. The barrier that keeps the outside of everything and you getting into the bloodstream. And this is very important. But when your microbiome is disrupted through processed food, antibiotics, way too much of them, stress, those damn pesticides that they're throwing on our food, that gut barrier breaks down. And what scientists call leaky gut. bacteria and their toxic byproducts then enter the bloodstream.
11:14But they're not supposed to be there. Your immune system does what it's designed to do. It inflames. And because that leakiness doesn't stop, the inflammation doesn't stop either. There was a study in 2019 published in Nutrients, and it showed that Western diets dramatically reduce the bacteria that produce these protective compounds, which damage the gut lining, spike pro-inflammatory cytokines. The bad food is the trigger. The body is just responding. Our grandparents had a diversity of food. They didn't have all these chemicals on it. And research shows that the omega-6 to the omega-3 ratio in our diet was four to one.
12:01Today, because in industrial seed oils, now listen, not all seed oils are bad, but how they're made through the chemicalized process of them then increases more of that inflammatory response. Also processed food, fast food, that ratio in most Americans is closer to 20 to one. It's out of balance. So it creates a response.
12:23Darin Olien:One of the biggest questions I get constantly is, Darren, where can I find the best non-toxic cookware? Listen, I don't mess around with things that go ultimately in my body. And that includes what I cook with. That's why I swear by Our Place. Because from day one, they've been committed to making clean, healthy, non-toxic cookware and kitchenware. No sketchy coatings, no forever chemicals, just pure conscious design that are beautiful as well as highly functionable. I've been using their titanium always pan for months now. It's the only pan I cook with, and here's why. Pure titanium, non-toxic, PFAS-free.
13:18Darin Olien:Extremely durable, metal utensils, high heat, dishwasher safe. This thing can handle it all. All-in-one performance. It's the best stainless steel cast iron nonstick in a single pan. And here's the real kicker. Most nonstick pans, they're still loaded with PFAS, these forever chemicals that break down in your body and stay in your body, and they accumulate over time. We just don't need that. They disrupt the gut microbiome, testosterone, dysregulation, metabolic issues, hormone imbalances, immune dysfunction, and chronic inflammation they contribute to. Think about it. Every time you cook, you could be introducing toxins into your body, and the simple act of switching to safe cookware eliminates that.
14:08Darin Olien:This is why it's the easiest, most powerful change you can make, certainly in your kitchen, for long-term health and the elimination of toxic exposure. So stop cooking with toxic cookware. You can change that right now. Go to fromourplace.com forward slash Darren and get 10 % off site-wide. You also have a 100 day free trial to check it out, to try it out. Free shipping, free returns, no risk to you. omega-6 fatty acids in excess not all of them you don't have to eliminate all of them but in excess of these overly processed foods creates inflammation because it's out of balance omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory unless they're exposed to oxygen and light that's why fish oils and everything else can can largely by the time you're trying to supplement can be inflammatory because they're rancid in those bottles or whatnot.
15:11You do have fundamentally altered the chemistry of every cell membrane in your body when you're not in balance. And to add insult to injury, refined sugars. Every spike, every overconsumption of way too much table sugar, sugar added to processed food, spikes your glucose, triggers your insulin, produces advanced glycation end products, which are directly activates this thing that you've heard before that I just said, the NFKB, the master switch for inflammatory signaling. This is documented in the research all the way back to the 1980s. Your body is inflamed because it's being assaulted meal after meal, bite after bite, and it is doing exactly what it should, which is telling you if you keep eating that food, it's gonna blow you up and keep that inflammation going.
16:09So now we get into something like chronic stress. Same thing. This one is underestimated constantly though. Psychological stress is just certainly in your head. You can ruminate like crazy, but it is also a biochemical event. When you are ruminating, when you want something to be different than what it is, you're stressing and your body knows it. When you are chronically stressed, this thing called the HPA axis floods your system with cortisol. Now, short-term cortisol is part of the process. It's fine. It actually is anti-inflammatory. I bet you didn't know that. But the chronic activation is not what we want.
16:54Your immune system becomes resistant to the cortisol that is flooding your system. the result is sustained elevation of this inflammatory storm. And the gut-brain connection here is stunning. A 2019 study found that transferring fecal matter from depressed humans, fecal implants, into the micro-depleted rats induced depressive behavior in those rats. Think about that. Microbiome, stress, inflammation, and mental health are one system. When we reduce things down to just a thing, we're blowing apart this incredible, miraculous body system that we have. Then you go to sleep. Sleep is when your immune system rests and resets.
17:50When your brain's glymphatic system clears metabolic waste. when inflammatory calibration happens is when you're sleeping. Research published in the physiological review documents, what scientists call the sleep immune crosstalk. Disruptive sleep, inflammatory markers rise, and the vicious cycle. Inflammation also disrupts the sleep. So it just keeps happening. Once you're in it, they both need addressing. But you can't just look at one. And movement, so very important. Your skeletal muscle is an endocrine organ. When you contract muscle, it releases anti-inflammatory molecules called myokines.
18:36Sit all day and you deprive your body of one of its primary inflammation regulating systems. Movement literally is medicine. It's biochemical. Then you got things, environmental toxins. Oh my God. You want to hear me talk about PFAS again? But PFAS is in the water. Microplastics are in the water. They're in the human blood. They're in the lungs and the brains. They're getting all over the place. Pesticides, residues in the food. Your immune system was not built for this chemical onslaught. And so it goes. And it does what it knows. When these foreign things enter the body and inflammation goes up, it's doing its job.
19:18It's trying to neutralize the toxins and protect. The inflammation is not wrong. It's never wrong. The environment and what you're doing, the terrain that you've heard me talk about, the terrain theory, the terrain is the soup that's causing us inflammation. The environment goes haywire. Here's what stops me every time I go deep on this thing. Ancient healing systems, Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, were describing this framework thousands of years ago, before modern medicine had the tools to confirm it, or that they just scrapped this idea altogether and tried to get a pill for you to take because inflammation is somehow wrong?
20:03No, no, no. In Ayurveda, inflammation is understood as excess called pitta, the fire principle, arising from accumulated toxins called ama. Improper diet, irregular lifestyle, and unprocessed stress. The Ayurvedic approach never starts with suppression. It always starts with a question. Where is this coming from? What is the fire responding to? It's like if a fire is here and it started my place on fire, God forbid it happens again, hopefully not. It's like going, oh, there's a fire. So don't let the firefighters put out the fire. That would be stupid. Ayurveda centers around this digestive fire.
20:47It's called anjni. When the fire is weak, food is improperly digested. And then this builds and it builds up and becomes fuel for the chronic inflammatory states. Modern science has confirmed this almost in verbatim. When the gut is dysbiotic and the lining is compromised, bacterial byproducts in the bloodstream create exactly the persistent low-grade inflammatory trigger. Ayurvedic physicians literally described this system 5 ,000 years ago. So Ayurvedic herbs like turmeric, curcumin, which is the active compound in turmeric, modulates these inflammatory cytokine storms, but they don't suppress it.
21:35They support it. There's things like ashwagandha reduces the immune system dysregulation, and it goes on and on. And this is published, and this is research. Traditional Chinese medicine, the same thing. Disrupted qi, accumulated dampness and heat. Different metaphor, same insight. The symptoms are the body trying to restore order in the response to a disruption. The healing starts by removing that which is creating the disruption. The ancients weren't guessing. They had tens of thousands of years of figuring this out, but we washed it away. We somehow came up with the modern medical association and wiped this whole thing away, going to reductionism.
22:19Reductionism is not going to get you well. The ancients were observing outcomes across generations, and they arrived at the same conclusion. Now, modern research is trying to understand more and more. You do not suppress a response to an issue. You address the source. So here's where the conspiracy becomes more visible. Every year, approximately 30 billion doses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are given. Ibuprofen, napraxen, aspirin are taken in the United States alone. Let me just say, 30 billion doses of this stuff is given, with not one going after the source of why the response is there.
23:07They are among the most commonly used drugs on the planet. And I want to be clear, I am not saying that there is never a time for pain management. Definitely there is. Acute injury, post-surgical pain, these are legitimate use cases for pain management in these acute situations. What I am talking about is the chronic, habitual use of these drugs to silence a signal the body is not getting wrong, but we never asked why it's doing it. Here's what a 2025 study published in Nature Communications from the NYU researchers demonstrated. Suppressing inflammation with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may actually delay healing and prolong recovery.
23:59Inflammation, the very thing the NZs are trying to suppress, play a critical role in the healing cascade. By shutting it down prematurely, you may be interrupting your body's own repair program. The Cleveland Clinic states it directly. NZs don't help your body heal. Research suggests they can slow your body's natural healing process. And the collateral damage, the COX-1 enzyme inhibitors, the NZs block, don't just mediate inflammation. It also protects your stomach lining, regulates kidney function, and maintains cardiovascular stability. Block it chronically and you damage the gut mucosa, increasing your risk of gastric bleeding, stress on the kidneys.
24:49And the FDA warns, increased risk of heart attacks and stroke for every NZ you take, every aspirin. You're taking away the firefighters trying to do their job. Think about the spiral. Chronic inflammation drives you to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and then those chronic uses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories damages your gut lining. Damaging your gut lining increases gut permeability. Leaky gut drives more systemic inflammation, which drives more non-steroidal anti-inflammatory use. It's not a good cycle. You're treating the smoke alarm, not the fire. So what can we actually do? The answer is not that complicated.
25:35It is just not what the modern medicine is set up for. It doesn't have source to go after to go, why is there inflammation? Why is there a fire? We're not removing the triggers. So what can we do? Every meal is a message to your immune system. Ultra-processed food, refined sugar, industrial seed oils, they are messages of assault. Whole foods, diverse fiber-rich plants, omega-3 fats, fermented foods, colorful polyphenols, message safety. The Mediterranean diet has the deepest research base for anti-inflammatory outcomes of any diet. Make your plate a prescription for health. Your gut. Identify what is damaging your gut lining and stop.
26:22then rebuild fermented foods, prebiotic fiber, targeted support for what you're going through. Your immune system lives there. You must treat it accordingly. Stress, you cannot out-supplement a life lived in chronic sympathetic overdrive, but you can do a lot. Breath work, stillness, meditation, time in nature, genuine rest, community, meaning. These are all not soft add-ons. These are powerful. They're biochemical medicine. They regulate this HPA access that is keeping your immune system in a state of alarm. And then of course, sleep, non-negotiable, seven to nine hours of sleep, dark, cool, consistent sleep.
27:10This is when your body resolves the inflammation. Moving, 30 minutes a day of movement is anti-inflammatory medicine. It activates this myokine release. It regulates blood sugar. It clears stress hormones. Protect your movement time like a prescription because it literally is. Reduce toxin load. Filter your water. Eat organic whenever you can. Minimize plastics. Support these detoxification pathways with cruciferous vegetables, broccoli sprouts, vegetables, hydration, sweat, sleep. The more important mindset shift of it all before you reach for a drug, this is not medical advice, to suppress inflammation.
27:51Ask, why is it there? Ask your functional medical doctor, your naturopath, why is it there? What is your body trying to tell you? The one question asked consistently is the beginning of a completely different relationship with your health. Your body is not your enemy. Every time inflammation appears, I mean every time, your body raises that alarm. It is doing the most loving thing it knows how to do in your situation. It is protecting you. It is fighting for you. It has been fighting for you every second of every day of every breath and through every meal. So you have a lot you can do. The conspiracy is a culture that taught us to silence this conversation.
28:38I'm not saying this conversation. I'm saying the conversation with your body to take a pill and then just keep going and not listen. And that has cost us enormously in chronic disease, accelerated aging, and in a population that is increasingly inflamed, increasingly disconnected from the wisdom of our own bodies. The research and researchers are clear. the ancient physicians, the Ayurveda, the traditional Chinese medicine, the same truth. Inflammation is a conversation of where the source is. Your job is not to end that conversation. Your job is to listen, understand, and address what your body is absolutely appropriately responding to.
29:25Give your body a reason to stand down. Remove the triggers. Restore the conditions it was built for. Real food, clean water, deep sleep, meaningful movement, genuine rest, human connection. Your body will respond. It always does. Your body never makes a wrong decision. It makes decisions based on what it's been given to work with. Give it something better. I'm Darren O 'Lean. What if inflammation isn't the enemy?
For decades we've been told to suppress it, silence it, and eliminate it as quickly as possible. Anti-inflammatory diets. Anti-inflammatory drugs. Anti-inflammatory supplements.
But what if the body is doing exactly what it's supposed to do?
In this powerful solo episode, Darin breaks down the biology of inflammation and challenges the modern narrative that inflammation itself is the disease. Instead, he reveals a deeper truth: inflammation is a signal — an intelligent response to disruption in the body's environment.
From gut health and modern diet to stress, sleep deprivation, environmental toxins, and movement deprivation, this episode uncovers the real drivers behind chronic inflammation and why suppressing the signal without addressing the cause may actually delay healing.
This isn't about rejecting modern medicine.
It's about asking a better question.

Key Takeaway
Inflammation is not a malfunction. It is your body raising the alarm: responding to stress, toxins, injury, imbalance, and disruption. Suppressing the alarm without asking why it's ringing keeps the cycle going.
Healing begins when we stop fighting the signal and start listening to what the body is trying to tell us. Your body isn't broken. It's responding to the environment it's been given. Change the environment and the biology follows.
