And you want to thrive. You want a thriving body, mind, and soul. I'm Darren O 'Lean and that's what I'm committed to and I hope you are too. Welcome to today's episode is all about wisdom teeth, those infamous third molars, which so many people are told to get out.
33But what if we've gotten a lot wrong with it? What if keeping your wisdom teeth isn't just harmless, But what if it's beneficial energetically and biologically? And what if the mass removal of wisdom teeth is more about profits than prevention? That's what we're exploring today. Now listen, I got fascinated with this. And because it's my podcast, I can dive into any subject that inspires me. And luckily, I have all of my wisdom teeth. I had space as a kid. I actually had a gap in my front two teeth and they were concerned about it. But that gap that then closed when my wisdom teeth came in was a blessing.
21And there was space. So I never had to deal with it. But I grew up with so many people pulling wisdom teeth and I wasn't really thinking about it. And then you come up upon these videos of these kids after anesthesia, right? And they're saying all kinds of stuff. And it's funny, but I was sitting there going, how is it that there's something wrong? So much in the population with wisdom teeth that we have to yank these things out as kids. When mine seemed to work out, thank God. Most of us grow up hearing that wisdom teeth are the troublemakers. We don't have enough space. They come in crooked.
02What if they're actually supposed to come in a bit crooked? They hurt, certainly pushing through. I remember it hurt a bit. And there is impaction and space and a potential cause of infection. So there is some stuff here, but I'm going to dive into it. But removing them is almost a rite of passage in late adolescence and early adulthood. Historically, though, wisdom teeth had a function, a functional role. Our ancestors certainly had, it seems, bigger jaws, and they ate tougher, less ultra-processed, zero ultra-processed food, very little processed food at all. And there were extra molars that helped chew on roots and chew on tougher things, and that was necessary.
55As our diets have changed, also our nasal breathing, more people are breathing through their mouths that the great work of Patrick McEwen digs into the history of this, that if you're still breathing through your mouth, that this is affecting the space of your jaw, your structure of your face. So a lot of things in our modern world is pushing us towards having less space. But what if we were aware of that? And the teeth are these things like, they're just wisdom teeth. It's a flippant kind of thing. So there's something wrong. So pull them out. But that doesn't make sense. It doesn't land for me that there's something inherently wrong in the body.
42So therefore we should pretty much just pull them out. Now listen, the technology of removal often became widely accessible with advances in anesthesia, radiology, surgical techniques, And certainly with all of that, it became easier to do this procedure, to extract these out of the body. But let's look at some hard evidence. It's not as clear cut as you may believe. There was a Cochrane review of prophylactic removal versus retention of asymptomatic or disease-free impacted wisdom teeth. And they concluded insufficient evidence. No eligible studies reported the effects of removal on health-related quality of life.
34The evidence is very low and completely uncertain. In other words, the standard, just pull them out, may not have virtually any evidence to support. A researcher, Jay Fredman, he is a public health researcher that calls mass extraction a silent epidemic of itrogenic injury. Around 10 million wisdom teeth are removed each year in the U.S. 10 million. The cost is over 3 billion annually. More than 11 ,000 people suffer permanent nerve damage as a result. Is anyone talking about it? Nope. Friedman estimates that two-thirds of the extractions may be absolutely unnecessary. Recent studies indicate that from the M3BE study show that older patients over the age of 25 are at risk of complications such as persistent pain, swelling, nerve injury, and confirming that removal is not without real consequences.
52When removal is medically necessary, there is, obviously, times when it is. There is clear situations when wisdom teeth should be removed. The caveat here is get a second opinion. Maybe get a second opinion from a holistic or a biological dentist. There is impaction with infection. Partially erupted teeth tapped under the gum that can't get through can cause severe pain and swelling and infection. So you need to watch out for that. There can be cysts. There can be tumors. But these are rare. But they are serious. They can hurt the jawbone and they can damage neighboring teeth. Of course, severe pain is an issue, damage to adjacent teeth, but keep in mind.
45Darin Olien:One of the biggest questions I get constantly is, Darren, where can I find the best non-toxic cookware? Listen, I don't mess around with things that go ultimately in my body. And that includes what I cook with. That's why I swear by Our Place. because from day one, they've been committed to making clean, healthy, non-toxic cookware and kitchenware. No sketchy coatings, no forever chemicals, just pure conscious design that are beautiful as well as highly functional. I've been using their titanium always pan for months now. It's the only pan I cook with, and here's why. Pure titanium, non-toxic, PFAS-free.
39Darin Olien:Extremely durable, metal utensils, high heat, dishwasher safe. This thing can handle it all. All-in-one performance. The best stainless steel cast iron nonstick in a single pan. And here's the real kicker. Most nonstick pans, they're still loaded with PFAS, these forever chemicals that break down in your body and stay in your body, and they accumulate over time. We just don't need that. They disrupt the gut microbiome, testosterone, dysregulation, metabolic issues, hormone imbalances, immune dysfunction, and chronic inflammation they contribute to. Think about it. Every time you cook, you could be introducing toxins into your body, And the simple act of switching to safe cookware eliminates that.
30Darin Olien:This is why it's the easiest, most powerful change you can make, certainly in your kitchen, for long-term health. And the elimination of toxic exposure. So Our Place is having their biggest sale of the year. 35 % all site-wide products through January 12th. That extraction should be evidence-based until you get an opinion and a second opinion and you can really understand what's going on.
30You should thwart the extraction process. The body is not always broken, but the medical establishment seems to always think that it is. Just have surgery, just pull it out, but we need to have evidence. Keep in mind, this is big business, and this is affecting millions of children. So why are so many people still getting wisdom teeth removed? The answer is partially economic. You just can't look at this and not see that. With billions of dollars flowing through the extraction industry, there are profit motives. Medical establishments, hospitals need to profit. Certainly here in the United States, younger patients heal faster.
20When you don't even have the full picture as a young person, they want to pull them out. That is not necessarily always the best approach. There are complications. And the culture of dentistry favors just remove them. No big deal. But they're not taking everything into account. And we're going to dig into some other issues around that. You can also monitor and watch. And many patients are unaware that watchful waning is a legitimate and very wise decision. Wisdom teeth aren't just molars. In holistic dentistry, they're part of your energy system. Mapped on tooth meridian charts to organs like the heart and small intestine, these things are meridians.
10We are electric beings. So every traditional Chinese medicine knows this. Ayurveda knows this. And this far outdates our white coats and our American medical associations. Far, right? So we are doing things with a very limited approach to what is actually going on energetically to the entire body. Some practitioners believe removal can disrupt this energy flow, affecting emotional and spiritual awareness. Spiritually, wisdom teeth are sometimes seen as a rite of passage that come in at a particular time in the development of that human, signaling personal growth, integration, and ancient and ancestral wisdom.
03Now, I don't mean to go out here and make it a woo-woo thing. What I'm saying and suggesting is that we are an energy-flowing system, perfectly designed by our Creator, in tune with all things. You extract one thing, it affects another thing. Period. We cannot extract ourselves from reality. Our minds can, but our bodies cannot be. We are affected by energy. And so when we affect those energy flows, we affect everything. The holistic approach often pair extraction when necessary. Sorry. The holistic approaches often pair extraction only when necessary with meditation, nutrition, healing rituals to maintain energetic balance.
56If you don't need to extract it, don't. This, you don't have to go along with the old system. Keep in mind, it's a business you're dealing with. Here's what's shocking. The lack of strong evidence for routine removal of wisdom teeth. Only two studies. Neither measured long-term quality of life. Zero zilch. Again, we're very short-sighted in this Western world. We don't look further ahead. We want to do things now without the consequences. And the risks are underestimated. Permanent nerve damage happens by the tens of thousands every year. Persistent pain, recovery, and complications. There is an economic motive that you can't deny.
50Billions of dollars, millions of extractions may not be necessary in all of those cases. neglected wholism in this process just like many other in the western model there is energetic and spiritual aspects that are rarely ever considered wisdom teeth sit at the intersection of biology culture and energy yet decisions are often made without full awareness so you can take that on You can be the steward for yourself, for your children, and watch and get second opinions and wait. Is this truly necessary? If you don't have an immediate medical need, you have other options. So what do you do? Get informed.
41Request imaging and data. Look at it yourself. Ask a second opinion. Or third, consider watchful monitoring for asymptomatic teeth. If you do not have symptoms, you do not need the extraction. Don't fall for it. Keep your power. You do not need to give your power away to another white coat. They're trying to do their job. They're following their old patterns, their old cultural patterns. but it doesn't necessarily mean it's good and right for you. Seek those second opinions. And if you can, find a holistic or biological dentist. Even if you go in just for an appointment and just for a second opinion.
29I get it. There's insurance and all of these things. If removal is absolutely necessary, then timing is a really good thing. Before the age of 25, if possible. That generally reduces a bunch of risk. Support your recovery, both before it and after it. Nutrition, rest, possible meditative or guided visualization, energetic practices. These are all very powerful. Wisdom teeth are more than a dental nuisance. They reflect our biology, our energy, and our culture. Sometimes just doing things is not the best approach. While extraction is sometimes necessary, research and holistic practices remind us that removing teeth is not always the wisest choice.
23Stay informed. Listen to your body. Listen to your children's body. Ask your children how does your body feel. Get them in tuned with their own body and embrace the wisdom in your wisdom teeth. Thank you for tuning in for this wise report on wisdom teeth. Stay in tuned, stay wise, stay strong, and keep charging forward on your super life. Peace. Love you.
