In short

Arsenal’s post-international-break run-in—how Mikel Arteta manages squad fitness, selection, and tactics for a “chaotic” schedule; plus a preview of the Southampton away game as a potential banana skin.

Guests (backgrounds)

Elliot Smith and Paul (co-hosts/podcasters). No other guests are interviewed in this excerpt; they discuss players and club-related charity work.

Key claims

  • Viktor Gyökeres’ four goals in two Sweden games is a confidence boost and suggests he’ll be crucial in the run-in; Arsenal’s striker/forward options may be shaped by midfield availability and fitness.
  • Martin Ødegaard’s return is framed as essential if he’s fully fit; the real question is fitness, not whether he’s “good enough.”
  • Max Dowman should likely be used as a game-state impact sub rather than starting, because of physical demands and Arteta’s defensive priorities.
  • Gabriel Jesus may be more useful as a wide option only if he can provide the required defensive legs; current evidence makes them skeptical.
  • Southampton is tricky due to rotation, limited preparation time, and the risk of losing fluency; Arsenal must “thread the needle” between cups and league momentum.

Notable examples

  • Sweden qualifying via Gyökeres’ hat trick/match-winning goal.
  • Arsenal’s recent concerns around controlling/creating chances (e.g., comparisons to City/Brighton/Chelsea performances).
  • St. Mary’s (Mansfield/St. Mary’s “bad experiences” referenced) as a cautionary precedent.

0:16It's Rice. What a goal! Declan Rice with an absolute rocket with a free kick. Arsenal lead 1-0. Cut inside. Saka! Sublime finish! He's back with a bang with Fukuyasaka, 1-0! Unbelievable! Look, usually I don't love international football, but I'll tell you what, I could use maybe one more week away from the anxiety. This is the Arsenal Vision Post-Match Podcast. My name's Elliot Smith, the Kupapman, I'm Jeter, Jank Gunner. Hello, everybody, and welcome back to the Anxiety Show, because football is about to come back with an insane bang. Just the FA Cup on Saturday and the Champions League on Tuesday and a crunch league fixture on Saturday and another Champions League tie and then another crunch fixture and then another Champions League tie, we hope, and then another FA Cup semifinal at Wembley, we hope.

1:03And it just goes on and on and on, and I'm sure it will be nice and smooth sailing, and actually all the anxiety I'm discussing will melt away like a summer breeze. We'll just never know it was there, or I may have no cuticles left by mid-April. Thank you for being here. Love you very, very much. Going to express some of that love more sincerely in a moment but first i'm going to introduce paul hello paul woohoo woohoo indeed you ready for the anxiety you ready for it yes yes i am i'm all chilled out won't last you take everything in stride you've got that zen you know how to meditate you know what you're doing i do know how to meditate and sometimes it helps a little bit sometimes it doesn't make much of a difference so uh yeah i'm ready to be terrified big big six seven eight weeks to come here it's everything we've asked for Elliot.

1:50We've been asking for this and God went and gave it to us. So, yeah. You want to go see us win the title against Fulham in a VIP box, meeting Arsenal legends and the podcasters like Clive and Tim? You can do it. All you got to do is give something, anything to our fundraiser. The link is in the show notes. It is 1.3 plus million pounds that you have raised in three years. And due to the cutbacks in funding globally for humanitarian projects, we are now essentially the only remaining child intervention program in Zattery Camp. That's it. This is the lifeline. We made a promise. We keep showing up.

2:24You keep showing up. And incredibly, as all these other charitable programs and humanitarian interventions have fallen by the wayside, Coaching for Life remains. Arsenal's support remains. It is an incredible thing our club does. Other clubs don't do this. There's local community work being done by Arsenal like other clubs, but that money is ring-fenced from the Premier League, from the club, and it's great work that we do. If you've never been to the hub near the Emirates, it is a remarkable place. And Freddie Hudson and his team do incredible work. But what they do in Zattery is extraordinary.

2:55It's something others don't do. And it's something we are going to give to. And I just want to say, because I know I get it every year. What about these causes, this other cause, these people in need? You're right. You're right about all of them. The problem with being right about all of them is that becomes a great reason to help none of them. So while I would never sit here and say, don't give to another cause that's close to your heart, what I will say is we had to pick one. We picked the one that our club is close to and you've shown up in an insane way and I couldn't be more proud of what we've done it's reverberated through the halls of Highbury House I can tell you that much Andrew and I have just heard non-stop how impressed people are with you and what you've done for this cause and and the need is great right now so a couple of things VIP box to the Fulham game yeah you could be there could be a title decider you could see us win the title with Arsenal Legends in a box.

3:43All you got to do is give. We're going to draw some for that. We have an auction site link in the show notes there as well, where you can get tickets. You can get dinner with the podcasters, all kinds of things that you could, um, you could choose to, to participate in if you want, if you're able, and if you're not able, you know what, just give it a share on socials, tell someone about it. Um, don't listen to this podcast. The one that's coming out right after this better one CEO of save the children in Jordan, Donna Erika spoke with me and told me why you are so special, why this work is so special and why it's needed.

4:11Hope you listen to it. We'll have interviews from players. We'll have interviews from men's and women's team players. We'll have interviews from people behind the scenes at the club. This whole month, we're going to do things to share with you this story in the best way we can. And as someone who has been to Zattery Camp in Jordan, I can tell you, these kids see the Arsenal badge as something that is a connection to the wider world. They don't have that connection. Arsenal is that connection. And you help provide that. And it is just incredibly moving when you're there to see that badge in that place and what it means.

4:40So feel immense pride in what you've already done. And hopefully you will help us again. Smash our goal, which you do every year because you're incredible. If you want to get in touch, contact at arsenalvisionpodcast.com. We can talk about ways you can help. But the best way to help is just go to the link at JustGiving and give what you can. And then we see where we land. And we believe that with this year's donations, we will be able to fund the full five-year cycle of the next program. So that would be a remarkable thing to do. Thank you. When we say we love you, we love you because of this kind of stuff.

5:08By the way, Paul, as you know, our patron money goes to this cause in April. So if you do say, you know what, I want to help and these guys are doing something good. If you want to sign up for patron, you want to use Saliba 50 and do half off or you want to do the full fare, our patron money is going to you. Our money is going, that would be lovely, I know, but it's actually going to people needs going to the fundraiser this month. And we'll be putting that donation in shortly and updating you on that as we go. And huge thanks to Andrew for his generous donation already. Okay. With that having been said, and we will be continuing to talk about that through April.

5:47So, you know, apologies in advance for hearing about it. But I hope you understand of all the nonsense we talk about on this pod, this one is certainly worth hearing about. Paul, let's touch on some international break stuff that happened before we look ahead to Southampton and beyond. And, you know, one thing that happened is some cool stuff for some players that we're going to potentially be depending on or might think we're going to depend on in the coming games. So let's start with Viktor Yokras, a hat trick, and then a match winner to send Sweden to the World Cup. A huge moment for him. And while the cynical people might say, well, that's the level, you know, scoring against that kind of competition, that opposition, in that kind of competition, and I get that, I get that argument, I am inclined to think that for someone who really wants to be feeling himself going into the run-in, really wants to believe he's the man, posing in front of his national team fans with the Bain mask on, having sent them to the World Cup, is just the lift we need for a player we're really going to need to be in top form.

6:50So how do you evaluate his international break and whether it could have an impact on us? Yes, to all of that. we should be very happy that he gets four goals in two games is to use your phrase only I won't he's feeling good about himself he won't say he's feeling himself no rolls off the tongue differently for you I feel I've got to keep away from that stuff that's the stuff that gets me into trouble he's also got what 16 goals and two assists in all competitions for Arsenal I mean it's creeping up quite nicely for him in terms of the season

7:27and him feeling good about himself. He's going to play big minutes and maybe have big moments for us in the run-in. I mean, three competitions, the ball's going to bounce in his area of the pitch, and we're going to use him because we've got the shortage. There's the opposite of a glut. There's a drought on our players. We're running them thin. He's going to play a lot. He's going to start a lot. it's nothing but good and maybe the best of Viktor Yarkeres is yet to come and you know Europe's different and there's you get different looks and he could have some really big games for us in Europe in the run-in so there's it's nothing but good so I'm very happy about Viktor getting his four goals he'll be happy Sweden will be happy we'll be happy yeah I I'm sort of torn Paul and I'm curious where you are on this because I still believe that Kai in his pump is the best center forward we have at the club that the best of Kai that I've seen is the best center forward play I've seen among our options at the club the best of Jesus might be up there too to be fair but I don't know that I believe the best of Jesus is really there anymore to be tapped.

8:51I think the best of Victor Jokras, his absolute best games, have been pretty solid. But I still fundamentally believe that an on-ball player who can help us in multiple phases of play is probably just slightly more valuable. And especially with Kai's aerial capacity, I think that that could be helpful as well. But I must admit, the best of Kai is really something that I think about having been from January to May, two seasons ago now, essentially two years ago. And I don't know the state of his fitness. I know he played once for Germany over the international break. He may be getting fit just at the right time.

9:27There are going to be people that say, well, you can play them both together. For me, Zubomendi, Rice, and Kai is a great midfield if you plan to be direct and go long and try to win a lot of duels. I think it can be a midfield that also leaves you without the ball as much as you'd like to have it. So for me, I still think it's preferably one or the other, Kai or Yoko Ress. And I'm wondering, with some big games coming up, let's say not Southampton, let's say Sporting Lisbon. I mean, I regard that as a big game. Maybe you want to say Bournemouth. Whatever you regard as the next really big game.

10:00Do you have a sense of which center forward you would like to see getting more of the big games or starting? Everyone will play, but starting more of the big games for the run-in? so there's a few ifs right in terms of who we have available for midfield it's pretty thin at the moment but maybe martin odegaard is back properly maybe hit some form quickly so that's the big one for me if odegaard's back and hits form he solves all sorts of problems for us and then then you have a choice of you know how you want to mix jacoresh versus havertz but until we reached that happiest spot like I think there's a good chance you're going to see both playing together

10:47so and we've seen it a couple of times and once it looked great and against City maybe not so much but I don't think we did it very well against City so I think there's the chance for it to be better than we've seen it there a couple more games they'll start to find their patterns I do agree it has the risk that we don't hold the ball or control the ball well enough. But the other thing we didn't have was an in-form and fit Saka on the day. That was probably one of his palest performances. So it's one of those where you've got to see it again with Saka in-form. This is Jock Resch and Havertz together.

11:27With Trossard, I thought he was okay on the day. A lot of people had a problem with Trossard on the day. But he was okay in terms of the work he did defensively and to kind of help us to dig out a bit for a left winger. He really didn't have much say in the game as an attacker. So we'll see a whole different game against another opponent than Man City with the Akoresh and Havertz. So I think there's mileage in that if Havertz is, if you like, the backup striker, our midfielder who's playing attacking football. So we've got options. We're still in that thing we've been all season where we're like still waiting for a good 11 where we're like, okay, I'm really excited about that with the players we have at the moment.

12:11and it feels like September, October, November, December where you never really have an 11 where you're like, okay, this is really good and we're going to tear it up against good teams. But it doesn't mean we can't have an 11 that starts to work for us and that could be one of the 11s. Or Martin Odegaard back in midfield tearing it up, feeling it could be the other way we get to an 11 we're all excited about. Yeah, I think Martin Odegaard is going to come back and play because he's going to have to, as is not available. I don't think Kai can play every game. Even if you thought Kai in midfield is actually a really good solution, we should rely on it.

12:50Has Kai played 90 minutes this season? I don't think he has. I don't think he's about to. So you are in a situation where you're either moving Saka inside, but you don't have Nani Medueke right now. So then you're talking about starting Max, which we'll get to Max, but I don't think he's going to start games. Odegaard has to play. I mean, I really think it is that simple. maybe that's good for him you can go with the competition's good we've tried a bit of that and it hasn't been that great because I wanted to throw this back to you I was going to say actually would you regard Martin Odegaard coming back in this situation to kind of be perfect for him because there has been look I adore the player I think it is fair to evaluate he hasn't been at his best in all phases of play for a while since that ankle injury now and I think that his role has gotten a little bit murkier in light of some of the players that have been brought in where there's some redundancy or some difference in how we play.

13:45Do you think it's clarifying for Odegaard to come back into a situation where, hey, there's no Ezza, there's no Marino, Kai probably can't start there. You go play midfield the way you play. We need help progressing the ball. We need help with the stuff you're really elite at. Go be the Martin Odegaard you've always been because we need that guy right now. Do you think that can be very clarifying and maybe help us see some better form from him than we've seen between the injuries uh yeah and that was certainly kind of how i i tilted my head i was going to go on this but like really what's the real issue is probably the same issue as the issue with saga if he comes back fully fit i think we'll get the full martin odegaard i think he'll hit like what has held him back niggles not been fully fit we've seen a game or two this season where he's really been on it and he's really started to look like himself um but i suspect he like many other players is somewhere between niggled and jaded for for many of those appearances so if you can tell me he comes back fully fit i think yeah the psychological piece of it matters but not nearly as much of uh if he's 100 fit we'll get the full 100 martin odegaard's on it creating stuff making he's a brilliant player he doesn't the psychological thing when you're that good is a component but after a game or two of feeling it um you're just on it and you you think you can tear up trees and your body feels good and you want to get out there and express yourself against other tired players i mean you could absolutely tear it up in that plenty of other players are are tired he's not is he fit is the question yeah i mean we won't know until we see him right we'll just have to evaluate that so i don't want to speculate i mean it is the case that he's been out a while and while he may have energy what he's got from a form standpoint remains to be seen this is where i think actually the way these games fall could be really helpful though.

15:58I think if you want to throw them in there, unsure of exactly what you're going to get, playing them against Southampton is a reasonable thing to do. And then while I do not want to diminish the importance of or the challenge of sporting Lisbon, it's another game where if you're going to use him, I think you could reasonably do that so that you know going into the games where you absolutely have no margin for error like Bournemouth and City and potentially sporting Lisbon at home, you're in a position to know more about what you're getting from him and what solutions you can rely on. So you've got a good proving ground in those two games.

16:32You do, though I suspect that's a bit more for us than it is for Arteta, because if I'm Arteta and my staff and my player are telling me, I feel great, right? I feel fully fit, then I'm going to totally lean into not worrying quite as much about form and worrying far more about getting him the games of the minutes to get him played in. Well, right, but you don't want to be doing that in existentially important or challenging games. I mean, feeling great and playing great are two different things. If you told me Bournemouth was this weekend, not Southampton, I'm not sure I'd be fist-pumping, let's start Martin Odegaard coming off months without football.

17:12I think I'd be much more... But that's the first game, right? Right. By the second and third game, if I'm Arteta, I'm going to YOLO into Martin Odegaard playing because that changes the outcome of my season. Wait a minute, but wasn't that exactly my point though, right? Which is you get to see him against Southampton and Sporting Lisbon, which are games where if he's not in top form, you can tolerate that. And then you'll be in a position to evaluate whether you want to start him in an existentially important game like Bournemouth based on what you see from those. And again, I don't want to say they're lesser games, but games that you may feel more comfortable with him easing himself back.

17:53yes although let me explain why it's not your point i'm going to agree i'm working on i felt it was i felt it was my point which i liked but apparently is not my point which i which i don't like but i am open to listening to yeah it it's because you you see how he's progressed no i don't if i'm arteta and he's fully fit i don't care how he plays i i'm like get him minutes get him going he feels good my doctors say he's 100 my medical team says he's 100 my fitness team says he's 100 if he doesn't have a great game i'm basically going to close my eyes and say i don't give a crap it's coming it's martin odegaard he's 100 fit uh two games and he's going to be brilliant now we to your point we know the two games but we'll be looking to see if it's coming along if i'm Arteta or I'm me I'm confident it's coming if he's fit I want to ask you so let's say he has and this isn't going to happen he's going to play like a Ballon d 'Or winner in two games score two goals get two assists be at the absolute uh peak of his powers and lead us to a treble of course but let's say in bizarro world where things happen that could never happen he drops two stinkers against Southampton in sporting you don't think with Bournemouth coming up that McHale might be like, I'm going to try Kai in midfield, or I'm going to move Saka into midfield if Nani's back because the Nani absence now looks like it may be short.

19:20You don't think it would give him pause? You think he's just going to keep sticking him back in there? I just think in the real world, they won't be absolute stinkers. If they're absolute stinkers, you have a point. I just, it's like, I expect him to be really good. I think Arteta expects him to be really good as long as he's 100 % fit. I mean, Martin Odegaard at 100 % And fit? Dropping stinkers? It's not my world. Well, you know what I like about Odegaard in that respect is that I think an Odegaard stinker, so to speak, means he's not making the right final pass in the final third. He's not taking the shots.

20:00But even in his bad games, I still think usually, not in every case, but usually, you're going to get him bringing the ball forward. You're going to get him completing a high volume of passes, doing some of the things that recently, to be fair, against City, against Brighton, against Chelsea, the block and tackle stuff that you just have to do the basics the the progressing the ball the pitch stuff has been an issue and i think you usually get that from martin odegaard um but we'll see look i don't want to i don't want to make this the odegaard cast but yeah can i just say i think there's way too much angst about whether martin odegaard is good enough the angst should be is he fit enough is he really 100 i i completely agree with that i would just say in two seasons, we've now seen a pretty substantial drop off of final third end product from that player.

20:47And given that we are a team where that is a focal point for us in terms of concern, those two things, unfortunately, the Venn diagram of things I'm concerned about with Arsenal and things I'm concerned about with Odegaard is a circle. You know what I mean? I'm concerned about Arsenal getting enough chances created and goals from open play. And I'm concerned about those things with Martin Odegaard. So we'll just have to see. Let's talk about something that is equally speculative, and that is Max Dowman. If you missed it for the U19s, scored a sensational goal by the touchline, left his man for dead, dribbled the ball all the way through midfield, scored.

21:22Shimmied. Yeah, shimmied. He has a move, and it's such a cool move because I don't see any other players doing this. He'll be up against the touchline, right? And they always say the defender wants you up against the touchline because the defender can use the touchline as an extra defender. but what he will do is he will receive it to the inside, to the touchline side and dummy it and spin to the touchline, not inside. And it works so often because defenders do not expect a player to go to the touchline side with so little room, but he has this little touch he can do to kind of spin, move it forward, keep it from going out in a touch and, and get past his man.

22:02If you watch the goal he scored for the U19s, you'll see exactly what I mean. He's also tried it for the first team. and I love that move because it's unexpected and you do wind up with our wingers up against the touchline a lot trying to escape, so it's particularly handy. But my position on Max Dowman, Paul, is I don't think he'll start any games. But I think he should play potentially quite a bit. So if not, he's out for a few games, and thankfully it doesn't look like it's going to be long-term. And depending on Odegaard's fitness, if it is patchy, if Kai's fitness is patchy, and Mikel feels that one of the options he needs to use in games is to move Saka inside.

22:39Do you think that Max Dowman goes from a luxury role where you can bring him on with a three-goal lead and it's fun for everybody, or you're chasing a game and you're desperate, to part of his plan in a more structured and regular way? Well, you just need one more injury. Why? See, guys, send the complaints to pause, right? Like, this is the tempting fate stuff. even I'm not a superstitious person particularly, but even I right now, I'm not tempting fate with that, but yes, carry on, please. Yeah. I'm really not a superstitious person. I mean, if that's how the world works, if God's really a Patreon member or a faithful listener of this pod, well, then the fundraiser should get us to treble alone.

23:25So let's go give. So I'm, it just doesn't add up that what I say really has any impact even on our listeners. Yeah, I was going to say, in general, I agree with that. I agree with that conclusion. So if we proceed, you, sure. People actually listen to what you say and react. Me, they listen to what I say and ignore it. Look, it just needs a niggle there in the players who hover around the right-hand side of the pitch. God forbid. Elias Doriachfad, let me put it that way. and like he goes from might play a few minutes, might play some 20s to he might start a game or two. You don't think a Martinelli starting on the right kind of situation just becomes the more natural solution or Jesus?

24:16Like it is weird to me. I don't think Gabriel Jesus has been good. He's two injuries away. So actually let me ask you this because I think this is relevant to the Max conversation. I don't think Gabriel Jesus has been particularly good as a striker in quite some time for us, although he's scored some interesting goals this season. but I still think that his dribbliness and, and his quality and his trickery off the wings could be useful. And, you know, maybe we've seen less of his strength holding the ball up from a center forward position, but that's less relevant from the wing. Like, do you think that maybe Gabriel Jesus has a bigger role to play than we think as a wide player?

24:54Like that, to me that, you know, Pep used him so effectively. And granted, we were talking about peak Jesus at that time, But he used him so effectively as a malleable player he could use across the front three and quite frequently off the right in title run-ins. Like, why not? Well, because he'll need a lot more legs on the wings, and Arteta would want him to do a lot more defense. Yes, yes. We just always think about how our attackers defend. I know, I know. Yeah. Well, I don't know if you've noticed this, but we're the best team in Europe, the best team in the Premier League, and the favorites for the FA Cup or whatever.

25:31Timber's back there, Paul. He can do it. He's fine. Yeah. So, unfortunately, Arteta probably cares about the defensive work he can do even more on the wings than what he can provide when he's dropping in centrally. And I just haven't seen the legs. Look, he can be a great player, but first you've got to see it in his legs, and we haven't really seen it yet. So I'm going to color me skeptical on Jesus until we see a game where he's tearing it up physically and he's got the burst and he's going past players, and we haven't seen that yet, unfortunately. I mean, he's still at a young enough age where he should be good enough, but I guess cumulative mileage in his legs or whatever, all the injuries he's had, all the minutes he has played over time.

26:21It just doesn't seem to be there. So I have a bit more expectation, I'll see, Max Dowman, I sense, than you do, even though I'm still, I'm basically with you. I just think I expect maybe a little bit more than you do. Well, let me frame it this way. So all kidding aside, I do think Mikel Arteta thinks a lot about how we keep the opposition out. and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I think we are the best defensive team in Europe even if our defensive level has maybe suffered a bit in the second half of the season. We still are excellent defensively and I don't think Mikel Arteta is ever going to put anybody out on the pitch that he thinks weakens us defensively if he has an option that he thinks is as good but doesn't weaken us defensively.

27:08And so I think, for example, if we're 1-0 up, I don't know that that's a situation where Arteta is going to want to bring Max on because I think he believes that what we have we can hold. Now, to be clear, I don't know that it's played out that way recently, and I am sympathetic to the idea that actually bring on a guy who can carry the ball from back to front, trick a guy, dribble a guy, win a foul, win a penalty you don't expect from nothing because if your team is sitting just that bit deeper, you need someone who can individually impact the field tilt. you know so I I would like that but I don't think Mikel will use him in a one nil lead situation I don't know that Mikel will use him in a nil nil situation except where it's late in the game and we are trying we desperately need a goal like against Everton I think look we all agree he might see minutes in a game where we're three nil up but but set that aside I would like to see him used more widely where I don't think he'll be used Paul is from the start and the reason I don't think so is that I think for a 16 year old the single biggest thing you're going to experience is the physical impact of playing senior men's football.

28:12I don't think a 16-year-old can play 90 minutes at that level. And if you start someone that you know cannot go past, let's say, an hour, you start the game knowing one of your substitutions, and that limits what you're able to do in response to what happens in the game, including injuries and scores that you don't expect. So I think Mikel might opt for the safer option to see Max as a game-state-relevant tool he can use, as opposed to starting him and potentially needing, knowing he's got a substitution he has to make. The only game I could see him starting, ironically, is this one coming up right now, which is Southampton, where if he feels he has to make a sub on the hour to take Max off, but it keeps Saka wrapped in cotton wool, and it helps him avoid having to overuse certain players, then yeah, I could see it in that situation.

29:01Yeah, I agree with that, except i'd still maybe add another egg in the pudding for um i could see why you play him when you're one zero up but you're not getting a lot of attack and you don't want to play you got 40 minutes to go and you're like uh i want to be two zero up not one zero up like we haven't tended to see that so far but uh if he continues to be a high impact sub when he comes on you start expanding the use cases for there are game states where you want another goal or you want to take the ball down the other end of the pitch you don't want to spend the whole bloody game in your half because your players are jaded and you're like max down and can do that fullback all day long take us down the other end to you know not just because you need another goal it's because you want to play in their half more than you're playing right now and so you could see i think there are more game states than maybe you originally framed where you could say you know 30 minutes of max down and changes the the balance of this game given given who we're up against and if they're sitting in a deep block uh he's a guy who can get you a penalty he's a guy who can jinx jinx his way around a fullback um i i think you're basically right i just maybe throw another egg in the bake.

30:30Yeah, and we both agree he's a useful player for Mikel to have because he has... Can I add one point on the starting, right? I think the one thing that really works for him is that the opponent isn't ready for him. And to your point, if he starts a game and then the next game they're anticipating he's going to start, which, like, that's too much to be playing anyway. But, like, that's when a team gets used to you like they got used to bakaya saka and they worked out not just to put two men on your side but where to put them and how teams aren't ready for him when he comes on so i think you're that's absolutely right i think the way to use him in the run-in to get the max max is bring him on as an impact sub uh when they're starting to reel or when they're getting a little tired or when they're getting a little leggy you're absolutely right but i just the way you frame is very cautious and i just i'd give it a bit more welly there in terms of how much we might see him oh just so we're clear if i were managing he'd start every game um i think what makes him so interesting right um it's sort of similar to miles in the sense that miles was available at a position where we suddenly wound up with need and he happened to have some qualities that we particularly needed, I think, right?

31:55His ball progression is carrying things like that, his strength on the ball, and he was at left back. I think right now, we're not awash in dribbly final third devastation. We're not awash in players that create a little moment of magic out of nothing. And Max is that guy. And so I just think when you have a quality you need and you don't have someone else who necessarily brings it, you've got to tap into it. But I think it will be very exciting to see what he gives. I do think Mikel will probably err slightly more cautiously than the way we're discussing it, but we'll see. I want to look ahead to Southampton and talk about how we'll approach that game, where it sits in the sort of pecking order and also the extent to which maybe it is being overlooked as a challenging fixture.

32:41But first, a couple things. April 25th, that weekend, we'll be in Washington, D.C. doing a live event. Paul will be there. I will be there. Jacob from Poorly Drawn Arsenal will be there. it's going to be a really special time at Franklin Hall, and we hope you will be there. Live pod celebration, but we're also going to be doing a coast-to-coast national celebration live stream for American Arsenal supporters to try to bring this community over here all together at a time when I think we could use a bit of togetherness. And so we'll be putting more out about that, but you can go to acrossamerica.arsenalvisionpodcast.com, acrossamerica.arsenalvisionpodcast.com.

33:15Learn more about that. Come out to D.C., support Arsenal. against either Newcastle or in the FA Cup semifinal. So we'll know that in a bit. And that'll be fun. Again, if you want to be a patron, we're giving that money to the fundraiser this month. So we'd love to have you there. If you want to use code Saliba50, you can get it half off or you could go full fair, you know, but your choice. Or if you just want to give to the fundraiser, please do. Please, please do. Let's hit our target. You can win a ticket to the Fulham game in a VIP box to see us maybe win the title on that day. Not out of the realm of possibility.

33:48and that would be a remarkable thing and well deserved for your charitable donation. Let's hear from some brands and then let's talk about Southampton. Today's show is sponsored by strawberry.me. Let me ask you something. Do you think championship athletes got to the top by guessing? No, they had coaching. Every elite athlete has a coach watching their form, calling the plays and spotting the blind spots they can't see themselves. That's how championships are won. So why are you trying to win in your career without a coach? You're grinding, hoping for the promotion, trying to read the politics, guessing your next move.

34:27That's amateur hour. If you want to perform like a pro, you need coaching. Strawberry.me matches you with a professional career coach who breaks down your game film. They help you negotiate the race, navigate workplace politics, and execute a strategy that actually works. Stop riding the bench in your own life. Go to strawberry.me slash podcast50 to get 50 % off your first coaching session. Strawberry.me, because pros don't guess, they get coached to win. Okay, Paul, can I just ask you quickly, like, how hard a game is this? How concerned should we be? I mean, we've had some bad experiences at St.

35:12Mary's in the Premier League, not as recently in the cup, but they're near the playoff places in the championship. This is not Mansfield Town. This is a different kind of opposition. This is not Wigan. It is away. It is under the lights. And it is a game that we won't have a ton of time to prepare for in terms of the players that are coming back from international duty and also not knowing which of these quote-unquote injuries are not quote-unquote injuries and just are injuries. so I think this has the potential to be a banana skin which would be a real shame because you don't want to crash out of both domestic cups and consecutive games and have that sort of swirling around the club as we go into the really important stuff so how tricky is this and how important is this?

35:58Very tricky they're going to be playing at home we're not going to play our strongest 11 from the start or for 90 minutes. So whether we get a goal ahead of them or not, if they're sticking around and they're a goal down or it's all level for a while, they're going to fancy it as the game goes on. And like we remember the Mansfield game, okay, we won't have to play on that pitch, but it wasn't all about that pitch. It took us a while to just get the machinery going. If you change the lineup, you can struggle a little bit for fluency and then any home team has a chance against you. Big teams crash out all the time.

36:45So now this could be, look, it could go very smoothly, but I think there's a two out of three chance that it's a tough game for us. And maybe we lack a little fluency. Maybe they will be up for it. Their supporters are going to have a fun day. they're hitting form in the league and just generally this is their better time of the season so far. So they can absolutely give us as much as we can handle on the day. I think it'll be a proper game unless we come in there all guns blazing and things go well for us and we're finding each other on the pitch and we score a couple of games but a couple of goals early on.

37:30I think it's far more likely this is a tough game. I still think we get there. And we will learn things about who's fit and available and who's ready to go. Yeah, I think it is a tough game. I think Mikel will take it maybe even more seriously than people are thinking. Look, he takes every game seriously. But I mean, I don't think the lineup is just going to be some intense rotation. Having said that, in terms of who's available, it may feel that way anyway. A couple of things I'd say about this. In terms of the importance of this game, the importance of this game is sort of going to depend on what happens next.

38:09And here's what I mean. If we beat Sporting Lisbon, Bournemouth, Sporting Lisbon, City, if those are four wins, having lost 5-0 at St. Mary's will literally not matter. No one will care. If we beat Sporting Lisbon, Bournemouth, Sporting Lisbon, and City, literally no one will care. No one will care about the League Cup final. No one will care about the FA Cup. So I believe that fundamentally. Now, people listening may say, that's not true. I want the FA Cup. And those results wouldn't change my opinion of it. But I tend to think that the vibes around the club would be ebullient in the scenario I just played out.

38:44Obviously, if we were to lose to Southampton and then not get the results I just called out, it would be a very different situation. And Arsene Wenger always said, or famously said, you go up by the stairs and down by the elevator. Or did you say the escalator? I think it was the elevator. But you go up by the stairs, you come down quickly. That's the point. And what you can't do is you can't let a slide turn into an avalanche. You can't let the League Cup final turn into you're out of the FA Cup. The gap to city is one point. You're out of the Champions League in the span of three weeks or four weeks.

39:17So I do think that doing the business against Southampton just gives you base camp, gives you a level off from the Cup final feeling, gives you a foothold back to feeling good and back on the up and up in this season. It keeps a big historic treble dream alive. And I know people don't like me invoking the treble, but if you're here, you have to discuss it. So Mikel's got to kind of thread that needle between, I think, resting the players who need rest, picking a team that can win, but recognizing that whatever happens in this game, it is the sporting Lisbon tie and Bournemouth and City that is largely going to determine how everybody's feeling in a few weeks' time.

39:54Paul, I just really believe fundamentally that we're also going to get an interesting window into the mindset of these players because I want to see players who come out excited to chase history as opposed to players who seem terrified of it. And there have been people, I think, who have asserted in the past that the players maybe wilt under pressure, maybe don't look like they have the mentality, and I hate the word mentality because it's so amorphous, so hard to evaluate for the challenge. But obviously, the way they shrunk from the League Cup final was a bit worrying, and I think that's left a bad taste in people's mouths.

40:26Do you connect at all to the question of their mentality, their mindset to go do what needs to be done when the pressure is on? I want to see a team excited to go win all these trophies. And I think we will see that. But do you worry about that side of it, the way pressure can make dust or diamonds? Which do you think we'll see? Do I worry about it? Not really. Except for when people bring it up, Elliot. the media will do the media thing i don't yeah well of course we can ignore that we can have a natural chat between us yeah i'm very getting very good at ignoring the media uh news alert they uh they don't like us well i mean we ruined league football now we're ruining the england national team you know ben white's there which is ridiculous because yes he's a great player but he wants to want to play for somebody who abused him and arsenal players who genuinely are shagged out and need to be fit for the World Cup are going home rather than playing meaningless friendlies.

41:25These are all things that degrade and debase the national team, and we should be out of reach. Yeah, because the national team manager sent them back. Yeah, yeah, yeah. By the way, and Tim made the perfect point about this, as did Clive. National team managers send players back because it's in their best interest too, okay? Yeah. Not overplaying players you need in the World Cup is in your best interest as national team manager. Anyway, we're way off track, sorry. So yeah, dust or diamonds, Paul. What's it going to do? I don't really worry about it in the sense that I think there's a fundamental character flow on this team.

41:57No, I don't. These are brave, strong players. But there is a psychology of not having won yet. And there's no way to fudge that, which is we're going to have to win to feel like champions. We shouldn't be feeling like champions yet. We still have everything to prove. We've got to play with a bit of that underdog spirit that they all have it in for us and we're going to show them. And that's why I think St. Mary's does matter. That match, that game does matter. And you talked about threading needles. He's got several needles to thread, including who's fit enough and how much does he risk them. And then the other factor is you're picking a team and you say, oh, I'll heavily rotate.

42:46But you're still going to have five or six starters in there. You're probably going to have the best part of a, you know, you might have two of three, for example. You might have Gabriel or Saliba and Timber or White, who you could consider both starters at the moment. Hincapier on the left, maybe. I guess we think Myles Lewis Skelly so fair enough but as you go around those positions you're probably still going to have two or three starters and across the pitch you're going to have five or six and the more guys you bring in who haven't played together the more the burden on the starters in the team is so there's kind of a minimum number of you need maybe seven starters across the pitch or you've basically got 11 guys who haven't played together and then the burden for the four or five starters on the pitch is really heavy because all around them are players they've never played with and now they're going to have to really tax their body whereas you know if you pick timber gabrielle and saliba they're probably going to have a relatively comfortable day because the team's a little stronger and the guy in front of them and around them is the guy they normally play with and it's only the guy on the left it's only miles who they know pretty well and know how to play with so the known knowns are are high and the known unknowns are low so i i think there's a point past which if you over rotate you actually made it more difficult for your team and for your starters who you're trying to protect and get through games safely there's an argument for saying i don't know what the number is it's probably like seven of your 11 need to be players who play together every week maybe it's ben white instead of timber but they it needs to be guys who can slot in and play straight away or the burden on the the five or six starters you put out there becomes very heavy what do you think my theory um i i know you're a rotate guy i know but there's a point a point past which the kind of the collective starts to be oh it's 11 different guys learning to play today no i i agree and and one of my hypothesis has been that the great teams that win stuff at this time of the year hypotheses one of my hypothesize i think it's hypothesize actually uh yeah is that um teams that win stuff this time of the year know their best 11 so to speak in quotes and and know how they want to play and who they want to play within the games that really matter.

45:29And because of injury and the depth of our squad, we've chopped and changed all season long. I think there is a benefit, not to locking into a set 11, don't get me wrong, but to finding the alchemy that works best for the group that we have available. Now it's going to be a bit because as is not around and he's probably in that group, we think. I still think left wing is completely up in the air in terms of what works best out there. I think Mikel will leaning towards Leo in the crunch games, but I don't think we can say that second half of the season, anything off the left has worked consistently.

46:02I think there's the question of center forward. Is Yelkress up front our absolute best way to go forward? Or if Kai is fully fit, in quotes, is he the one? There's a lot of questions to answer. And I could be convinced, Paul, that rest, as important as it is, right now may not be as important as clicking, so to speak, into the group that's going to get us where we need to go. like we saw you talked about one decision to be made at Stryker but another one is left back right it feels like it's gotta be Calafiore it's gotta be Calafiore and like this is where I like if Mikel and I were sitting down I would argue with him about this because you know clearly A he would sit down with me B he would care what I say about football and C it would have any relevance to what is correct versus what he believes but whatever advantages Piero and Capge gives you defensively I think he's better sprinting back towards his goal I think he's better in recovery runs I think he might even be a little bit stronger in some of his defensive intuition, although I think Calafiore is a better defender than he's made out to be.

47:00I think what Calafiore gives us is so important in light of the deficiencies that sometimes pop up in our game. And I think if you look at the period of this season where we've been imperious and where we've looked really hard to stop, he's not only played those games, but he's been a critical contributor in those games, like the period around Bayern Munich. So I think his return to the lineup is essential. I recognize that relying on him to stay fit is a fool's errand. And so he will have to be someone that is carefully selected. But I would like to see Mikel go back to him as sort of a nominal first choice, Paul.

47:33That I definitely believe. We need a functioning, dangerous left-hand side to our team. And that to me spells Calafiore. It's kind of a strange one in that it seemed to be he thought the answer to everything in the first half of the season was Calafiore. That was the period I called him Mikel's new favorite toy. And now he's leaning much more heavily into Hincapié as the kind of default option, which surprises me a little bit. I like Hincapié. I think we all do. and he's given us more in the attacking end than maybe we suspected he might at this point. He's been actually pretty good going forward, but that doesn't give us an exciting attacking left-hand side and Calafiore does on a good day.

48:27And I like Trossard on that side with Calafiore and we're starting to tick and we're starting to really move it around. That's a really good left-hand side. And so, yeah, I'm with you on that. I don't understand. I'd like to sit down with Mikel too and in a very humble way say, explain to me why you don't want to play Calafiore because he has been actually really good defensively. He's surprised me a little bit on how good he's been defensively, but he's really not made me feel at all nervous or vulnerable in the games and for good reason. He's really held up his end of the bargain defensively and looked really good 1v1 against tricky wingers.

49:12He seems to have handled pretty much everybody. Now he's coming back into the team, so he's at a dicey moment or two when we bring him on late in a game. But that's only to be expected. I think overall his defensive work this season has been really good, as we saw in the first half of the season. So I'm surprised it's taking him so long to get back into the team. and start being a factor and being a starter given the challenge we have to create mischief in the attacking third. I mean, with him, it's always possible that the reason is pretty straightforward. Mikel just doesn't trust that he is going to hold up.

49:52But if that's not the case, I'm with you. I really think he needs to be brought back in. And of course, he'll be dealing with the pain of not having qualified for the World Cup. But, you know, having a summer off wouldn't be the worst thing for the player, even if I'm sure he would give anything to be playing in that World Cup. And this is where I guess my sort of theoretical understanding of football bumps up against the reality. In my mind, having a really good group of 11 or 12 or 13 players who you know you can call on and you call on them every game and they're all in peak form and that's how you go win things.

50:25Like my belief in that just has to bump up against the reality that how we got here so far is using the squad. And the only reason we're here at all is because we've had a deep squad and that it is not going to be the case. It just isn't. I mean, it's a 1 % chance that we're going to land on a group of 12 or 13 players who all play every one of these games in the run-in. And that gets us where we need to go. So even if that's kind of how I think about football, and even if I still kind of believe it, it's not this team. That's not the story of this team. And this team, whatever it's going to achieve is probably not going to achieve it by trying to do that.

51:01Obviously, Paul, there are a couple of players that are. Yeah, go ahead. Well, just to repeat the point, we've got way more goals from our bench than any other team in the league this season. We've got 21 goals and assists. City have got like two or three goals and assists from their bench. So to your point, we're not just set-piece FC. We're goals and assists from our bench FC. So it's not going to just doesn't look like it's on the cards that 11 or 12 players are going to take us home. Our bench may be what takes us home. Yeah. And look, if I look at the way we played in the cup final, there are a lot of important players missing there that are technical leaders that could have helped us deal with that four man screen that that city employed.

51:49But if we really look at this season and what we want to accomplish, Sporting Lisbon is a team that we should be able to get past with certainly no disrespect to them. So is Southampton. So is Fulham at home. So is West Ham away. So is Burnley at home. So is Crystal Palace away. So is Bournemouth at home. So you're really talking about City away in the league, maybe Bayern Munich or PSG in a Champions League final and, you know, Barcelona, and whatever we get in the FA Cup semifinal and final. What I'm saying is more often than not this season, we're going to be a heavy favorite in the league in what we have left.

52:28And I think whoever we pick, we should have the quality to get past those teams. I think where the first 11 question is really going to come in is how we've sometimes framed it, Clive frames it, you know, the lineup for your life, you know, which is, what do we think is the best possible version of this arsenal if you're in Budapest and Bayern Munich are lining up opposite you? You know, if you're in Budapest and PSG are lining up opposite you? Because I think if you put the team out, you put against City in the cup final against a PSG, you're going to run into the exact same kind of problems, right?

53:00So that's not a problem Mikael has to solve by this weekend, but I think that is something that will have to be in his mind, and I think he'll be looking at how players perform over the next few weeks in trying to determine that. And let's face it, we've got some work to do to get there, but that's where we're trying to get, so let's talk about where we're trying to go to. As a final point on Southampton, Paul, I think there are certain clear goals I'd have in my mind for what I'd like to see. We talked about Martin Odegaard getting out there, seeing him play, seeing him play well, get a sense of what he has.

53:34I do think trying to determine what that front three composition looks like, do you think we might see, if not from the start, a period of that game where it's like Saka, Kai, and Leo, for example, where Mikel is going to want to try to see the group, right? Like if he thinks the group is Rice, Zubamendi, Odegaard, Saka, Kai, Leo, or Saka, Jokers, Leo, whatever it is, do you think he's going to want to use the Southampton game at some point to try to get the group out there that he regards as the group so he can see how it works, see it function? I mean, you bring Martin Odegaard back into a mix and match group where Saka's not playing and Kai's not playing and Leo's not playing and maybe Declan Rice is rested.

54:16And that's all well and good, but for Martin Odegaard, That's not necessarily the best way to reintroduce him. So do you think he will try to get at least some period of the Southampton game where he gets a look at what he regards as maybe his first choice group, so to speak? I'm sure he'd love that. I don't know if he'll get the opportunity to do that because he'd start with Martin Odegaard. Does he want to play Jokeres, Havertz, and Saka, who've all been on international duty and are coming back in various states of fitness like back to threading your needle I think we counted three needles he was threading earlier for this particular game that would be a fourth so yeah I'm sure he'd love it but there will be a lot going on it'll be like who's ready who he wants to start who he wants to see play and like Martin Odegaard should be like we expect him to start right and we expect him uh hopefully to start hitting some level of form in this game.

55:16And I don't think it matters too much who's on the pitch for Martin Odegaard to be able to show he can play some football and get passes in behind for players to run on to, be it Max, be it Saka. So, yes. But I think it's the fourth needle he'll want to thread and other events will, you know, fitness on the day, who feels something, who needs to be got off. It's going to be all about fitness and who can start and when he gets them off and who he needs off the pitch for the midweek game. I can't remember if we're playing Tuesday or Wednesday. Are we playing Tuesday or Wednesday? Tuesday, yeah. Okay.

56:04So I think there's your fifth needle, and I think it comes ahead of your fourth needle. He'd be less worried about wanting to see players combining on the pitch and more worried about who he gets on, who he starts, who he gets off, how quickly they get off, what they're feeling on the day. If somebody's feeling a little tightness, getting them off. I think there's just way too many things going on to be over-obsessing about getting a particular lineup together at a particular point in the game. Too many moving parts, Elliot, though I agree he would like it. Yeah. All right. So then let's just get down to it.

56:44What's your prediction for Saturday? Yeah, right. For Saturday night and who will start? What do you think the lineup will be? What do you think the result will be? All right. I'm going to go with Trossard left wing. I'm going to go with Jokeresh. I'm going to end up picking the second start in 11, aren't I? I'm going to go with Havertz. I'm going to go with... I'm going to go max on the right. I got to get one on there. That is not our starting 11. Timber's due a game. You're telling me he's fit, Elliot, with your inside track. I mean, I think he's fit, but I think he might just be giving that little extra time off.

57:32Yeah. Okay. Well, I'm picking him. So I'm going with Timber. Calafiore on the left hand side

57:44Mosquera and Gabby as centre backs I guess we'll see Kepa in goal and my midfield then is

57:59Norgard Rice and in effect Havertz So I got Trossard, Yachoresh, Max, Havertz, Rice, Norgard, Califior. Oh, hang on. MLS. Never mind. You talked me into wanting to see Califior. Played well for the U21s, Matt. Yeah, he did. He was absolutely on fire. Ethan was good too. I'd like to put Ethan in, but I'm not allowed. No, no. He plays for another club. Yeah. MLS, Gabby, Mascara, Timber is my back line. Norgard, Reis Havertz, midfield, Trossard, Jokeres, and Max. What do you think? I mean, I think it's fun. I don't think it's what we'll do. Okay. What do you think we'll do? I will guess. First of all, I mean, look, it is what it is, but I think it's going to be Kepa, which is going to be a big discussion, by the way, because our ability to win the FA Cup probably depends on us getting past Chelsea, Liverpool, or City, two of those three, if we get past Southampton.

58:59And if you're facing those at Wembley, is Mikel going to go right back to the guy he made the promise to or is that promise going extendedly as far as the League Cup? Let's see. I think it'll be Kepa, Ben White. Mascara's fit, right? There's nothing wrong with Mascara. Okay. Kepa, Ben White, Mascara, Saliba. Because I think Gabby might still just have a little something. Who's playing left center back? Mascara, I know. One of them. Who cares? One of them, okay. Yeah, I know Mikel doesn't like to do that, but I think Gabi will be rested. And Saliba didn't play for France. So, yep, white Saliba, Mascara, and...

59:40You could play Califiori as left center. Well, I'll say Miles too, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's Califiori. We know Incappier pulled up in the internationals. Apparently it's not bad, but I don't think they'd throw him right back in. And that's a long distance travel that he made. So Califiori or Miles, but I'll say Miles. In midfield, I think Rice will be rested. I think he's carrying a little something. So I'll say Norgard, Zubimendi, and Odegaard. Just a little bit of a weird midfield three, except. Yeah, I should have gone with Odegaard. And then I think we might see, gosh, Martinelli will just be back.

1:00:21Where did Brazil play? Do we know? I saw a lot of Brazilians cheering in the crowd. So I'm kind of feeling like I traveled. Yeah, let's see. Brazil men's national team, they just won, obviously. But where was the game? It was a friendly and it was played in. Does anybody know? I don't know. Obviously, Gabriel Martinelli did score. Let's see if we can get that on. there's got to be a website that has that right I'm sure there is and people like listening to me search websites on podcasts that is I would say one of the reasons they tune in so you know you're here I'm glad you're here Brazil we're going to search that we're going to see and they played okay we are getting quite close now everybody and the funny thing is everybody listening already knows it was played in Camping World Stadium which I can only imagine is in Orlando Florida and it is.

1:01:22So, a long trip back for Gabby from Orlando. Not quite as far as Brazil, but a long trip back. So, I'll say, um, is he going to start sacking this game? I don't think he will. I'll go with Woof. Martinelli,

1:01:44Martinelli, Jesus, and Leo, maybe? Martinelli, Martinelli, Kai, and Jesus. How about that? Something wacky. Martinelli, Kai. Jokras just played two intense, important games. Saka, as much rest as possible. You know, maybe he will just start Saka and go Saka, Jesus, Martinelli. That could be it. You know what? I think we teased as much out of this as we can. We'll see. I think Arsenal will win, but I think it will be an ugly game. I'll go with like a 2-1. I think this is going to be tricky under the lights at St. Mary's, but I think we'll have enough. And we'll be back to winning ways. and ready to face Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, which that's a game he's going to want Jokras fresh and firing for.

1:02:25So I think Jokras will be kept in cotton wool because I don't think there's a chance in hell he's not starting in Lisbon. And I'm very excited to see that. Please give to the fundraiser. Please listen to my interview with CEO of Save the Children, Jordan, Donna Erekat. She is a wonderful human being. I had a chance to meet her. She's lovely, and she does incredible work and helps the Coaching for Life program thrive in Zattery Camp in Jordan. So please give.
