In short
World Cup Daily preview and reaction to knockout matchups—France’s dominant form, Mexico’s breakthrough and potential England vs Mexico at the Azteca, plus today’s games (Belgium vs Senegal) and broader tournament storylines like transfers and heat.
Guests
Elliot Smith (host) and Michael Timms (co-host). Timms is an England supporter based in the UK (“back in Blighty”), watching games via highlights due to jet lag.
Key claims
- France look “unbelievably good,” with Ousmane Dembélé/Olise system changes unlocking Mbappé; Alise (Michael Olise) is argued as France’s standout and possible Player of the Tournament.
- Mexico “break their curse,” remain scary because they haven’t conceded, and home advantage at altitude makes England’s Azteca challenge daunting.
- Heat/humidity may become a decisive factor; hydration breaks should be reflected in stoppage time.
- Transfer market is “bananas,” with Arsenal-linked spending/sales speculation.
Notable examples
- Mexico’s Raul Jiménez goal and Quinones’ naturalized-Mexico celebration; Gilberto Mora (17) impressing in the Azteca.
- France vs Sweden: 3.17 xG to 0.67; multiple near-misses.
- Norway striker Erling Haaland cited for 60 goals in 53 games; Norway’s Yandiamande criticized for hype vs output.
- Stock rises/falls: Mora and Haaland up; Sweden and Yandiamande down; Didier Deschamps up.

0:25Nothing to worry about England, but you may be headed to Azteca to face Mexico. This is the World Cup Daily. My name is Elliot Smith. The Black Men's Rick and Gunner. Hello, everybody. Yeah, Mexico were through. The Azteca was intimidating. And now, hand of God memories float through the minds of all three Lions supporters as England will battle today to try to earn the right to play Mexico in the Azteca. USA going today as well. We'll talk a bit about that. And, by the way, Belgium-Senegal, which should be a good game, I think. But we're going to talk about yesterday's games because that's how this works.
1:01And the only way to do that is to introduce this man. Hello, Michael Timms. Hello, sir. How are we doing? You're back in Blighty. You've got your Three Lions kit on. You're swelling with nationalistic pride. Other than that, how are you?
1:15Michael Timbs:Yes, I'm good. I'm slightly dreading the game today, to be honest, because from what I saw yesterday, I don't like the prospect of Mexico in Mexico City. That's, yeah, we'll see how we play today though. You never know. We might hopefully stick a few past DR Congo and actually get some form going into that game because if we go into that game playing how we played, it's going to be a long day for us. Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't say that confidence is high based on the way you've played, But, you know, the talent is certainly there. And if Declan Rice is back, all will be well. I believe so. We got a Foden-esque sensational assist from Martin Odegaard yesterday.
2:01Did you enjoy it? Remember when Foden slid a five-yard pass to Abra Chaeza, who uncorked a sensational goal? Well, I revised my opinions on that because Martin Odegaard's assist was breathtaking. Just as impressive. Just as impressive.
2:14Michael Timbs:Yeah, it wasn't the finish. finish it wasn't the the technique on the like with the whip it was he basically handed it to noose on a platter it's an invitation to score of course yeah and and and odegaard's reaction is exactly you know what you would expect from someone who puts it on a plate you know hands in head disbelief yeah i can't believe i've pulled off that piece of skill yeah exactly yeah yeah um and and i i do want to say though uh pretty cool so uh a friend of mine michael ibrahim who was at that game sent a video an awesome video of Odegaard banging the drum after the game with the Norway players doing the rowing and he sent it from the from the stands it was a great video so kudos to him um before we get into this I just want to ask you are you enjoying the fact that this transfer window quietly in the background behind the World Cup is trying to be the most bananas transfer window ever in terms of the price of players like I woke up this morning and there was a post from Hand of Arsenal and he was saying, you know, if you think the transfer window is crazy now, let me quote it, quote, if you think the market is broken, wait till you hear Tenali will be sold to Spurs for 90 to 100 million, maybe 85 million for Matias Nunez, 90 to 100 million for Tenali.
3:30And it's a reasonable midfield rebuild. I'll give them credit, by the way, even though I do it through gritted teeth, but it's 200 million pounds for what three seasons ago might have been 60 or 70 million pounds of talent it's fairly ridiculous i think they need to do something
3:46Michael Timbs:to be honest i mean not not for our benefit obviously but they can't do what they've done over the last two seasons and not do something different and if that means spend 200 million pounds on like good established premier league players but realistically they're not going to get you top four but at the moment i don't think their priority is top four their priority is not getting relegated so uh it sounds about right it's just yeah every season the market just goes crazy and there's going to be another record and maybe this is going to be like a relegation fodder record of spending money so it is it is yeah it is looking like a little bit ridiculous and i mean it's tough in a way because on the one hand there is so much money especially in the Premier League that this is the inevitable uh end point of all the consolidation of wealth on the other hand it just becomes very very difficult to to understand how how to value a player at this you know I wouldn't want to be a draw I mean obviously I'd be an excellent director of football I think everyone agrees with that but like uh yeah right thank you um but I yeah I wouldn't want to be a director of football because how do you value a player so as you've been watching the World Cup I mean do you find yourself doing that thing that we know not to do which is rating players differently because of how they're performing on the international stage which is like the the thing you know you shouldn't do but you can't really help doing anyway well to be honest I think it's it's hard not to I think everyone does it every club does it and you know the the prime example of James Rodriguez having like a a breakout World Cup and then being signed like there have been a few players to do like even like quinones yesterday uh for for mexico like i mean he plays in saudi so um but even that is just like suddenly just on your radar i mean i i i didn't know much of him and i'm guessing some proper football hipsters did know and have known his life story but uh yeah phil sent me 50 pages about him before the world cup i didn't i didn't but even then like he's not really been on on my radar in any way and then suddenly it's like oh okay who's this player um but then i think maybe that is just across the board that's what happens where you have a decent world cup or a good world cup and it just puts you back in the uh back back on the radar for some people and and with the with the fees going around now maybe it is like a prime time for for for uh some of those players to get big moves equally it could be good for us to be able to if we are going to shift people um and and build on our success maybe it's a great time for for example and not that i agree with this but leandro trossard yeah and martinelli both scoring good goals being decisive and actually showing people look this is what i'm capable of when i play week in week out and that sort of thing so it might actually be good with i think on the whole arsenal fans probably think over the last few windows like we've been with we've recruited well and spent money but we've never really sold well in terms of how valuable we see our players and what we've actually been able to sell them for so maybe this is a bit of a turning point where we can actually get some good profit and get more realistic and um or a better value for our players if we do decide to sell them yeah you an idiot we can get money for Martinelli me a genius we cannot buy Morgan Rodgers and just play Martinelli at left eight like like Brazil do so there's that and then I will say just to highlight the point right there are going to be some players whose values will skyrocket beyond what makes sense like for example I bet there are a lot of clubs right now that would go out and buy the striker for um for Norway I can't remember his name but like uh oh what's his name uh Erling I can't remember he plays up front for Norway he's got a ponytail I don't know but like you know that's an example of just players that really aren't that good that look good at the World Cup okay uh hashtag banter is over it's time to do the pod I will tell you Friday Night Clive is back but it's back on Friday so Friday Night Clive is back we will have it on Friday join us for Friday Night Clive uh we will talk all things transfers nothing but transfers if Clive tries to tell me anything but transfers I'll mute his microphone I promise okay Timsey you my friend owe me a headline from yesterday's games I do um and it's going to be one where I actually didn't watch the game I watched the highlights okay I watched the rest of the games but we should emphasize you're back because you're back in England yeah the game was and a lightning delay so the game was at a ridiculous hour yeah so so I did actually really want to to to stay up and watch it but I just thought I'm I'm tired I'm still jet lagged from LA.
8:35Michael Timbs:So now that I'm back in the UK, I'm on UK time. I feel your pain, UK listeners. It's very difficult to follow all the games. But Mexico, Ecuador, the headline being Mexico, El Tri finally break their curse. Their fourth game, or their fifth game curse. So they've reached the fifth game in a World Cup for the first time since 1986. and I did think it was the round of 16 curse because obviously that's what the you know they're being able to get past that round now they've got to it but they've also you know broken their curse so um so happy for them like a bit of a shame uh for for Ecuador and obviously um the the whisperer behind that the hand in cafe to get sent off um but Mexico I think deserve to go through like it It was a great game by the highlights anyway, like very, actually all action.
9:32Michael Timbs:And I think before that, probably most people thought it was going to be a bit more defensive than it was. And like just two teams going to be tried to, like hard to break down. And with Mexico now still not conceding this World Cup, it's a bit scary. And just the reaction to the goals as well. This is what I think the World Cup has needed. As much as the storylines have been amazing, uh there has still been some kind of handshake games and things without any sort of jeopardy and now that we are into the knockouts every game matters every every game needs a winner and uh i think it's for the best because seeing mexico's reaction is just is what a world cup's all about like the the the the goal celebration like the roar of goal goal goal when uh raul Jimenez tucked it in very well to the top top right for it for the for the Mexico second was like deafening I'm very jealous I wasn't there because that seemed like almost like a once in a lifetime game that you could have gone to so uh yeah Mexico look really really good and actually have have improved I think anyway like especially going forward they look more comfortable uh Mora Mora looks, I mean, he's 17 and looks super comfortable as well.
10:52Michael Timbs:So, yeah, it's not a good sign for England if we get through because Mexico, they've got their tails up and they look confident. I will say, aside from getting sent off for covering his mouth in 90 plus 5, I actually thought Incappier was pretty good. When he rated forward, he did well. I don't think he was the defender really at fault for Mexican chances in general. I do think he did pretty well. I think Mexico are a great sort of test of the theory of the importance of home advantage. And we'll see if England get through what that does for them. And also the ability to build a cohesive group that can play well together despite maybe not having that elite or at least known to be elite global talent.
11:39right the level of talent in that mexican team it's not a lot of names you know from around club football but they've gelled they seem to have a system that works they're playing very high tempo they're inspired by their fans and the azteca is a fearsome place to have to go play football it's at altitude it's intense it will help them run that extra bit faster uh find that extra gear Kinones, to your point, has been fantastic. So if it is England that gets through, I think that's a must-see game in this World Cup. That's going to be tremendous theater for so many historic reasons. So I'll hit a headline of my own.
12:18That is the format after all. And my headline is just give it to France. Do we have to play the rest of the World Cup? We can start the transfer dailies tomorrow. We can get back to talking Arsenal. Just give it to France. they look yeah unbelievably good um and look i i you know now they have paraguay next which you know with all due respect to paraguay who who obviously pulled off the upset of a very mediocre germany paraguay are not doing anything against this france team france piled up 3.17 xg to 0.67 and late in that game honestly they could have made it four or five six seven but players were starting to look for their own their own goals you know Sweden we've not been impressed by Sweden and Sweden let up a lot of chances in the group stage and we knew it could be a problem for them but like unlike the Mexican team where it's names that are less heralded and a group that's come together in a cohesive shape and form France is the the globetrotters they're the stars and the stars are playing like stars but while everybody's focusing on Ole Sein and Mbappe and Barkala and and you know all the stars up front meanwhile you got Saliba back there just calmly you know taking everything in his stride and and making it look easy and they've got two functional midfielders and I mean Timsey as of right now uh and I know the World Cup doesn't work this way but I have a hard time looking past France they they look just incredible yeah the I mean this
13:46Michael Timbs:is what i think everyone has kind of feared is this this france team with this much talent actually delivering and maybe we're kind of jumping the gun a tiny bit because i don't think they've they've had to they i don't think they've been tested properly like they're playing in second gear and they did this but this is what i mean i don't really know if if it's also just they are so elite that they can't even really be tested at this point you know before they maybe play Argentina in the final like maybe this is just that simple for them where that the way they cut through so you know I think they took a little bit of time to to get warmed into it um to find their rhythm but then once they did it was just pretty relentless and also just even even when they're this is what i think france has that i think few other teams or maybe no other team has is that even if they're not quite in their rhythm yet and haven't found their the right spacing for when they're attacking one player can just make a run or one player can on the ball make a move and beat someone where like it just opens everything up and they have four players like that or five players at one time on the pitch that can do that and so it's even then you kind as a viewer watching the game, it catches you off guard because you're like, where has that just come from?
15:10Michael Timbs:And then suddenly it's just like, boom, they're in. And imagine what it's like for these Swedish defenders and the whole team trying to defend. And they're like, okay, we're keeping the space quite well. We're not letting too much. And then suddenly it's like, well, why has Elyse done that? And now they've broken through and they're looking really scary. It's just that they do look a little bit ominous just with how much potential and threat they've got going forward. Like some of the goals, some of the chances, the passing, like the assists, Alise is just on some different level. I think he might, if he keeps this up anyway, of course, I don't think you can really argue with him winning like player of the tournament.
15:53People are going to say it's still Mbappe. Look, he's scoring the goals, but for me, Alise has been the standout player for France, honestly.
16:00Michael Timbs:That's the thing. I don't think I think if you Mbappe's incredible I don't need to tell anyone how good Mbappe is let's play in the world and he's scoring all the goals and it's going to be between him and Messi for top goal scorer that's just going to be a shootout but I think Alise you don't get that same level of end product from Mbappe if you don't have Alise in there just because like he doesn't even play a position like he doesn't one minute he's like doing the Harry Kane thing and dropping deep as like a defensive mid and then the next he's like found the perfect pocket in the number 10 to like receive an incisive pass from like Chua Mene or whoever it is and then he's just hanging out on the right wing what just goading these people in and like into a full sense of security and then he's like drifting over to the left wing and stuff it's just like he just finds space and he I feel like he knows the game so well where he can just put himself in such dangerous positions and then he's got the technical ability to take defenders on 1v1 or thread a ridiculous pass through like his assist for Mbappe is I think ridiculous like because even the for Mbappe the third goal yep like the way he I know it looks like a simple pass but like he does this tiny little hesitation and like just just pauses for like the split second before playing that pass to make sure like I don't even know why he does it but it works and it just threads the ball through through the defender's legs and it's just like what even is that what can you do and then obviously you've got just the fastest man on the planet on the end of it who's really good in front of goal so you're like well you can't really defend against that is it the Barcala one that's in transition and like I I do think that teams in general screw up a lot of transition chances because that's hard right to get everything right and when he is on the ball running I think one of the things that he has a quality that is so special he always looks under control you know as someone who is uh an enjoyer of the nani maduike experience you have some of these players who are devastating in transition in their own way they're they're athletic and they're powerful and they can sprint past you but they always look right on the edge of their control i think what makes bakayo saka so good when he's at his best is kind of that olise thing that he always looks like he's a step ahead like the game is moving slowly he has the technical he has the technical level to execute difficult execute difficult actions even while on a sprint or you know on the run moving he doesn't he doesn't make those little mistakes he's just a tremendous player i mean i know it's hipster to be talking about the guy who's creating the goals while mbappe is just scoring sensational goals causing immense problem could have had three or four in the game but to me only only say and maybe i think the reason only say stands out to me timsey is like I can't help but think gosh Arsenal Arsenal could use that conductor that that playmaker you know yeah I think like I mean look Mbappe obviously you have to give him credit just for his two goals really well taken the first goal was ridiculous like but then we've seen him do it before and it's like he's just playing FIFA and the feet are so quick and like he can't can't really fault anyone like maybe they could have picked him up from the short corner and they were maybe a bit lax there but the I mean those goals aside like I think yeah Elise is probably the person to highlight just because as I said like none of those goals and that kind of threat it does not to the same extent if he's not playing and also I feel like he's one of those players that you you have the the players that control the tempo of the game but I think it's it's like the the Odegaard mold where it's like give me the ball I'll be on the ball the whole time I'm I just pop it around and it's kind of the uh the metronome type thing or it's the it's the the player like Elise or like Saka when he's on it where you play to their rhythm not because they're on the ball the whole time but because they just make the right decision every time so when they do get it it's a threat because they'll play the right pass and they'll make the right decision of like well I can I can beat this man here or I'm going to play it inside at the right time and make a move off it and it's just like you you because the decision making is so good inevitably i feel like your pace of play and your rhythm has to be based off of off of their moves so he i think he's just one of those players where like you just have to almost play to him and and and base off base your play off of what he does because he's just yeah i mean mbappe is probably the best player in the world if he isn't always say might be the best player in the world yeah and if he isn't let's not forget that the guy who won the ballon d 'or is standing out there on the right wing just kind of biding his time sure i mean it's it's completely ridiculous the best defender in the world is probably sitting as as their center back um now i do well you know what i'm i'm gonna give i'm gonna give a stock rising in a moment to an unsuspecting person someone that i i wasn't really thinking of giving up to but i think now maybe they deserve it since we've heard about mbappe on the france team uh well you'll you'll see when we come to that so i kind of wanted to guess all right well um why don't we do this uh are there more headlines oh by the way i should just mention if france are able to get past paraguay they get the winner of canada morocco yeah to get to the quarterfinal and like with due respect i i think they'd be huge favorites there the the hardest team they could face yeah yeah i mean look if it's morocco france i think would be unbelievable i think it'd be reasonable i think france are levels above even though i think morocco are good of course to be fair france might be levels above anyone and then they could face a spain team that hasn't impressed my point is like they're on the easier side of the draw and they're the best team but anyway um i think is there another another headline that i want to hit oh uh yes i'm gonna do a super quick headline and then we'll get to the socks my super quick headline is just finally an excuse for a hydration break the france game was played in yeah absolutely absurd heat and humidity and there is a heat dome over the east coast of the united states stretching sort of into the midwest in the south um getting worse it is and so what i will say is like as much as we all know why those hydration breaks are there and the issue with them it met at new york so i was gonna call it met life stadium but of course we know it's called new york new jersey stadium um but at new york new jersey stadium it was definitely warranted and i do think this is an interesting thing to watch because the climate which hasn't shown up as a factor in this tournament may show up over these next few days now as temperatures hit i don't know what is it timsey 40 what is what is 95 and 100 degrees in i think it was 38 38 uh well it's getting to 39 degrees uh yeah coming week i think which is yeah 30 38 37 36 those kind of things with massive humidity and so my point is simply that will show up and i do think that's where the elite athletes have an edge and so the countries that are playing with good quality cohesive players but players who maybe don't play at the most elite level and aren't the most elite athletes may not be as capable of lasting and and exerting themselves under those conditions you might say well it just depends if you're used to those conditions i actually don't think it's about being used i mean part of it's about being used to him of course but most of these players don't play in the countries of their origin a lot of them play beyond those borders anyway i think the elite athletes will have an edge but but let's see because because weather and and heat could finally become a storyline in the world yeah and and look i've never been against it when it actually merits having a hydration break but i think this this established like mandatory three minute hydration break which isn't three minutes by the way it's like four and a half and and the the the thing for me is as you said like a lot's been made about the advertising and everyone knows how everyone feels about that i'm glad they're still getting booed great just keep letting fifa know how you feel um but i think that the the annoying thing is that now like the the hydration break isn't really being taken into consideration enough for like the added time so like if we're gonna if we're gonna take literally like eight minutes out of a game for both of the hydration breaks that has to be reflected in like the the added time at the end of like regulation so even though we get i can't remember there's been a few games where there's been fouls injuries the hydration breaks and then it comes to the end of the game and they go right well six minutes about a time it's like if if if you're being honest it has to be like at least seven or eight well and what happened was it was it qatar where the stoppage time at the end of games would be like 10 minutes 12 minutes and we were routinely used that now they have four minute hydration breaks and it's five minutes of stoppage time it's like what's going on it's if you're going to do it that has to be reflected in in the added time because it's not it isn't fair yeah um so i'm gonna put a pin in this only because we've whined about the breaks quite a bit and people have let us know that they get it no no no i mean it's a storyline but like tim tim and clive did a bit on the main arsenal vision pod yesterday i will tell you by the way if you want to hear about um uh bruno gimaraj and and alex scott they talked about that yesterday too so that's something you can check out there and of course we'll talk about that on friday night Clive as well.
25:31Okay. So now it is time for the stocks. And that means it's time for the Nord VPN MVP of the day. That's right. Our first stock rising will be the Nord VPN MVP of the day. Well, that's not true. You can't put it on your blender. Like what do you, what do you go VPN your blender to another country and blend someone else's food? That would be, that would be stupid. Don't do that. You know what? It expressly does not work that way.
25:59I don't want you calling Nord and saying the host of the podcast said you could put it on your blender and blend other people's food because I am expressly not saying that. What you can do is you can put it on a phone, a tablet, a computer, and you can browse where you want to browse. You can watch the subscriptions you pay good money for that you're being told you can't watch. Well, now you can watch. So, aha. And when there's a social media video that everybody's saying is amazing, you go, you try to watch it, you can't watch it. Now you can watch it. And it has threat protection and it has ad blocking.
26:23So get it, put it on your device you get four bonus months and a discount and 30 days money back guarantee why wouldn't you want that you want that more than putting on a blender four bonus months 30 day money back guarantee and 30 days uh and uh a discount that if you go to nordvpn.com slash arsenal vision that's nordvpn.com slash arsenal vision that's nordvpn.com and the nordvpn mvp of the day our first stock rising timsey oh you've given that to me off to all of that you'll get you okay you've
26:52Michael Timbs:given it to me i've got no words left stock stock rising uh okay i've got i've got two so i'll wait till the to to do my second one after you um harland i know it's i know it's i'm with you on this i'm with his his his record is ridiculous he did nothing nothing yesterday he did nothing like most of his games he's threatening he runs he's scary as anything doesn't really touch the ball because he doesn't need to and then he scores a goal and it was actually a little bit scrappy it was actually a nice move but like scrappy as hell just bundles it in but then the commentator said and that's 60 goals in 53 games for Norway what I didn't even know that was a thing so then I went up I looked it up after I was like that can't be like for Norway I know his goal scoring is ridiculous at club level but for Norway as well like they're not great and then I looked it up and it is indeed 60 goals in 53 games which is ridiculous even considering I'm guessing a lot of them are going to be kind of semi-pointless friendlies and then Nations League game and that sort of thing it's still you need to score the goals and that's what the goal man does he scores the goals so um yeah just ridiculous goal scoring record and uh yeah it was actually like a great game I really enjoyed it it was fairly um to and fro it was a bit at times it was a bit dour and a bit like there wasn't enough quality from both sides.
28:22Michael Timbs:Ivory Coast were the better team. And by the way, Nico Pepe looked pretty good again. I've enjoyed watching him at this tournament. I will miss him being back in my life. Just the quality in the final third is basically, I guess, the difference where like Norway at times, especially at the back, they're not great. But then going forward, they've got just a little bit more like finesse. Neustad's goal is obviously a fantastic goal. It's obviously a great goal. but even then just like the the maybe maybe not the patterns of play but just like the quality on the ball and especially when like Odegaard is like the constructor everything's quite neat and it's like they're they're finding ways to fashion chances and create space and then Ivory Coast are kind of doing that but then when they when it really gets into like the in and around the box they just I feel like they just lack that little bit of quality and that's where like uh uh my second stock rising will come in but I will I will leave that to you you bet I got a great stock rising that people are going to love because I think it's the right one and everybody's going to be really happy about it I don't I don't know I'm just I'm hyping it I will say by the way super quick um now we have in Capier home resting yeah we have Kai Havertz home resting we're starting to build up so you know uh Victor Yocres home resting and like you know I know he'll obviously be playing for another team next season I'm kidding gosh everybody gets so mad he's he's he's getting ready for the athletic season next season uh no But like the pain I see in our players being hurt is balanced by the enthusiasm I see for them going.
29:51And like watching Kai Havertz try to gut out 120 minutes after he couldn't finish 90 minutes for us the whole season. I am quite happy that he's heading home. Okay. My stock rising is Gilberto Mora. Nice. I think and maybe a little bit of Mexico starting Gilberto Mora. Like this is a 17-year-old. This isn't a 20-year-old unheralded young player. This is a 17-year-old. We're in Ethan Wannery, you know, of a couple seasons ago range. We're not far off Max Dallman range, and he's starting in the Azteca in a knockout game. And he was great. He was absolutely – he missed a sensational curled finish from the left side by millimeters.
30:34They couldn't get the ball off, and they resorted to having to hack him down at times. he played exactly the way you'd want a young player to play which is he wasn't scared of trying pieces of skill and showing his quality but he was looking for his teammates it wasn't selfish, it was unselfish but precocious, I thought he was excellent and it's a player we talked about on the preview pod about a player to look for in this tournament but we weren't sure if he would get his opportunity and I thought it changed Mexico It made them look that much more dynamic, that much more progressive and dangerous.
31:11And I think he will now probably get the chance to start against England and seeing him go up against the likes of, you know, Declan Rice and 117 pound Elliot Anderson would be really exciting. I mean, obviously, notwithstanding the fact that England could crash out today, but that's another story. So my fundamental point here is a 17 year old doing that for his nation in the Azteca is a moment that we should stop and celebrate. and of course it only leads to one possible thing someone in Europe should buy him for big money and take him away from Mexico where his Mexican career uh comes off the rails and we we never hear from again I'm kidding but yeah he uh he is an exciting player and I am excited to follow his career as it
31:51Michael Timbs:progresses yeah yeah absolutely I'm I'm the same I'm excited to see what he goes on to do because he was great he has been great for them and a bright spark and I would also say we probably have to shout out obviously Raul Jimenez for his goal he could have had two or three as well like a few more chances I think he missed a header um that should have done better with but I mean just him scoring going crazy diving on the floor as the the stadium just going absolutely potty is is wild scenes and same with Quinonez as well like he I think he he was Colombian if I'm right or he basically yeah he's a naturalized Mexican citizen from Colombia that's right was tired of not getting chosen and he was like right well I'm playing in Mexico I'm going to be Mexican they welcomed him with open arms and then for him to give the Mexican fans that moment is so cool because the goal itself is a joke like he hits that ball so hard um and I was a bit worried that with how good the goal was and with how wild the celebrations were I was so scared it was going to be offside I thought so too He's just on In his half But yeah so a special shout out to By the way Shout out to American Twitter for Showing their whole ass not knowing that Being in your own half you can't be offside As a bunch of non-ball Knowing people all over the world were like He's clearly offside because they didn't know the rule So thanks to my countrymen who showed Their whole ass last night There was also the reaction to that offside I can't remember what it was from yesterday.
33:29Michael Timbs:Oh, with the goalkeeper and the, it was the Iran one, right? Oh, yeah. Where the toe was offside and they're like, how ridiculous is this? And it's like, well, yeah, but this is the fine line. You're going to measure. And like, this is what, yeah, exactly. It is sort of weird. Well, anyway, let's not get sidetracked. I think you owe a stock rising and it sounded like you had a clear one you wanted to pick. So who was it? I did. And it was for the losing side for Ivory Coast. because I thought Amadiallo was fantastic. Really? Yeah, he was, but like, this is the Arsenal Vision podcast. What are we doing here?
34:06Michael Timbs:No, of course. You're right. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. I'm giving him his dues. I'm kidding. Yeah, he was great. And actually, like, one of the players that when he gets the wrong goal, you're actually like, I've seen him do this before, and he's got end product. He's obviously a very, very talented player. And it was a great goal, a great finish. and to be honest at that point like Norway were not waning but they weren't really taking their chances or kind of forcing the issue at all and and this is the one thing that I think Ivory Coast did very well is like used the hydration breaks to their advantage where like noticeably got better as uh like Norway I'm guessing needed a bit more time like during the game to to get uh into their kind of like flow things but then as soon as the hydration break finished like I think Ivory Coast used that as a as a way of um revitalizing themselves and kind of putting it to norway a little bit more and so um i i actually thought that yeah they were well worth the um the the equalizer i thought they deserved it and then obviously yeah norway just scoring that scoring the last parts of the game but um yeah just a a little a little mini arsenal vision shout out to amadialo because it was a really good goal fair fair enough um and if you want to laugh at a social post check out phil costa's timeline when um uh some fans uh were talking about the fear of losing amad diallo just just check out phil costa's timelines right um okay after this yeah yeah so i'm gonna i'm gonna do one more super super quick stock rising we'll do the stock falling look ahead to tomorrow and get you out of here but uh the super quick one is just i'm gonna say didier Deschamps like I I've never believed in him he's a serial winner I've yet to be convinced and my whole worry with France was would he be the obstacle would he do something weird with this group that prevents them from being at their best and like moving Dembele right and letting Ole Se play in that freer role behind the striker has unlocked Mbappe more has made them look more fluid.
36:11He's just put two functional midfielders in behind that group of four and told them to go do their thing. And it's worked. He hasn't done anything super weird. He got Olise in the position where he can thrive. That first game where Olise was kind of out wide and Dembele was behind Mbappe that didn't work. And people were saying, should Mbappe not play? Should Dembele just play the nine so he can drop in? And it looked a little clunky. I mean, they won, but it looked a little clunky. One little change, Dembele out wide, Olise in the middle. And And now it's liftoff and they're going to go win the World Cup.
36:41So I think Deshaun, and you can see, there's obviously a lot of egos there. You see when they get subbed off, you see the relationship they have. He was doing the we're not worthy thing to Mbappe, and Mbappe was giggling. He's got the chemistry right. He's won the big things. He has the credentials to make the big decisions. And while I'm guilty of maybe not rating him, which is unfair, we've praised a lot of the club managers coming into the international game and improving teams but Deschamps continues to win and it it seems like he's kind of gotten out of his own way in this tournament and uh he deserves a quick stock rising I think anyway
37:14Michael Timbs:yeah I think I think any manager would find it hard balancing that that side that is so attack heavy talent wise like you you look at their defense and even in the midfield it's like you've got Chouameni and you've got Rabiot in the midfield for some reason Rabiot just always plays and is like just that solid dude who's who's actually just good but not spectacular uh and then going forward you have so many options to choose from and he just finds the you know he basically dropped Douay uh from the starting 11 you know my early pick for player of the tournament which was then replaced by Michael Alise correctly but you know he's made some hard decisions and actually found some sort of uh system that that works um and yeah he's he's a winner man like no no isn't it there's only ever been one there's only ever been one manager who's won two world cups and that was the italian manager from like the 1940s or so i don't know it was like or like the first he won two of the first three world cups for italy and no other manager has won two world cup and feasibly deschamps could be that guy because they are ridiculous yeah i mean it's yeah remarkable let's uh let's hit the stocks falling let's each do one so i'll give you the first one yes please oh wait oh i thought you said oh you give me no no no i am going to i'm going to give you the option i'm not going to give you the first one i am going to give you the option of selecting the first one yeah uh i will go with uh sweden just the sweden team um so not the country to be clear lovely country wonderful people beautiful beautiful country um but but they but the team.
38:56Michael Timbs:Yeah, the team. They didn't, I know they're up against, we've just been waxing Liverpool about how good France are and it's going to be impossible to stop them. But they didn't show up at all. They didn't show up at all. And like as much as, obviously like they battled, I think the kind of two up top with Isak and Giocarez is like, it might work in a group stage and they might be able to bully some smaller teams. But doing that against this France side when you're not going to have the ball that much because they're just going to dominate and you need bodies behind the ball because sometimes you just have to you play the opponent and if if it's France you know like you can try have two up top and play like a 4-4-2 but you're you're barely going to get any chances to get them the ball and so I think for a lot of the game they just resorted to like pumping up the pitch and watching Giocares mostly Giocares but sometimes Isak like chase after the ball and try to somehow bully the defenders i actually think gocarez did a decent job of like at least being a nuisance and like chasing loose balls and like there were some good battles between him and saliba and i thought he won a few and looked fairly handy but uh it was just like it was a shot in the dark man like they they didn't really do much they didn't fashion many good chances and just it was it was an inevitable like just it was a it was a matter of time until they conceded and then it was always just going to be impossible from there so yeah just going out it was a little bit of a limp uh performance to to go out to but yeah i just thought they could have maybe set up a little bit better and and had a better showing it just been a bit harder to beat yeah and look i'm gonna give a stock falling and and we do this we have to be honest if we're gonna say you shouldn't overrate players for how they do in the international game you also shouldn't underrate players for having a poor international tournament it just happens that way but i'm gonna say uh yandiamande i think yandiamande is a super talent and i think he's going to have probably a very good career he is a young player and like i like i want to be really careful about how you phrase this right he is 19 years old he'll be 20 this season so like i i'm being cautious but let me just say he's going to PSG for huge money he was being chased as like the big money young player move of this summer and like Norway defensively I don't think are good I don't think they have the talent to live with him he created one chance he took one shot he completed zero four dribbles um I think he was a little too easily taken out of the you know while guys like Nico Pepe are showing up, I think, and looking kind of influential.
41:44He struggled. Now, again, at 19, at the World Cup in knockout football, I'm not asking you to be amazing, but you saw 17-year-old Gilberto Mora look quite good. So for me, it's a stock falling only in the sense that, and maybe it's because the broadcasters, sometimes the broadcasters are guilty, the broadcasters kept talking about him like he's Messi plus Mbappe combined. And that made me more, like if they just talked about him like another player on the team, it'd be one thing, but they kept talking about him like the superstar. And I just think the hype exceeded the performance. And I look forward to him scoring the winner in Madrid next season to beat us in the Champions League final again.
42:20Michael Timbs:I think we also, in this same tournament, I think we've also given Yandy and Mande a stock rising at some point, or maybe that was Lewis. Maybe in the, certainly in the first round of games, I think he was brilliant. Us talking about how good he, but because he was great, he played really, really well in that first game. But yeah, I would agree with you. Obviously, there's a lot of hype. He should have done better with the few chances that he had. Exactly. Okay, so we'll quickly mention the games today, and I should mention Belgium-Senegal. This is important to note. Senegal and Morocco can still face each other in this World Cup.
42:57We could get Senegal-Morocco again. No, granted, Morocco would have to get past France. Senegal would have to get past Belgium and Portugal and Spain and all this other stuff. imagine imagine it just imagine it i mean as much as i think france are going to win the world cup probably should i i would pay anything to see senegal morocco in the semifinals of the world cup but um let's let's just quickly mention belgium senegal as an interesting one because i don't think belgium have been great senegal obviously needed to beat iraq by eight million goals just to be here but they're both teams that have the talent do you have any any thoughts on who might show up in Seattle?
43:34Michael Timbs:Honestly, no. I think... Coin toss, yeah. Yeah, they've both been disappointing. Belgium, I think people just have to learn their lesson, myself included. I think they have the potential to be so good and now it's like they're just not. They looked better, obviously, in the last game. They managed to get a few goals and it's obviously nice to see Leo play well, but they're not offering much. Um, and Senegal will obviously be hugely disappointed with how, how they perform for the most part, but maybe it's actually, it's a perfect fixture where you don't really want to waste one of these like teams that aren't playing that well playing against a good team that you get slapped.
44:16Michael Timbs:Um, actually having them play each other, maybe it's a perfect opportunity for, for one of them at least to step up and start playing some decent football. And then it just makes the next round a little bit more interesting. So, yeah, I will. It's nine o 'clock. I will watch it. Of course, I'll watch it. Nine o 'clock, I will watch it. But I'm not holding out that mad hope just because the past few games that we've had over the last two days have been very, very good. And that is maybe one I envisage not being the best. But we'll see. Yeah. Okay. Talk to me about your three Lions. Is Yoan Wissa going to score a late winner to end the World Cup or are they going to make it to the Azteca?
44:55Michael Timbs:I obviously hope not. No, I think, yeah, we should get through. The game against Panama was obviously a little bit more encouraging. The way I see it is, look, maybe the game against Croatia where that second half we were playing some good football and it was a bit more free-flowing and stuff. I don't think we're just going to get that against everyone. you know like we're gonna and tutu i think said it in his interviews like i think you're gonna see a better team in the knockouts because you're gonna have teams we're going to play teams that aren't just gonna sit back and there's gonna be teams that attack us and we can kind of play our way or whatever it is um i don't think congo will try and attack us like a mexico would in the next round where mexico at home their confidence is going to be through the roof they're going to have home advantage and so I think there'll be a lot more uh yeah on the front foot which might play into our hands because then at least we can trust our defense and our structure and then be able to exploit the spaces that we'd have going forward or on the break um but we should have enough like I I was more encouraged especially with like the the starting lineup I think as long as like Saka and Rashford start uh and fingers crossed I think deck should be fit uh in which case he would start as well obviously then um I think we should be good like it would be nice to now that we've got to the knockouts to actually firm up a starting 11 that Tuchel knows is just like if everyone's fit and everyone plays well like this is the team to play and I think that would include an Elliot Anderson deck Jude in the 10 uh Saka Rashford and Harry Kane um yeah I think that would be the uh the kind of top one two three four five six going forward uh yeah so i i'm excited to see how we do like the main thing obviously i think is just making sure we win but if we can play well get a few goals or at least show that this team is confident going forward and because we're not playing gordon for example who has been anonymous um then that's a good thing so i'm quietly hopeful um and i'm gonna be be leaving in about 90 minutes to go to the pub the first time this tournament that i've been able to go to an english pub full of horrible english fans and watch a horrible england game it's gonna be great everything about that sounds brilliant um yeah i mean obviously like i want england to go through and i want my england players and england friends to be happy i also want them to crash out in devastating fashion and have declan rice and bakaya saka with their feet up and able to actually put because it's july 1st if you give them all a july off and three quarters of august off maybe for for saka all of august off you could be looking at a fully healthy bakaya saka for the season makes all the difference for us the problem is it's not happening yeah it's not happening and also because realistically like mexico england might be a bit of a toss up and then like as we get further into the tournament i don't think we have enough to to get to the set to the to the final but um realistically he's still going to be playing for the next few weeks uh he's going to have a few weeks off max and then he is going to be back into pre-season i i personally think that we will probably be without at least deplin and Bukayo for the first two, three weeks of the season, just because they've played so much football and they've had no break.
48:36Michael Timbs:And these are young lads, and I know they feel like they can play forever and ever, but they now have injuries and niggles that we need to address. You can't play through them. A Michael Terry and the Achilles, you just can't play through. It doesn't matter how good you are. doesn't matter what you're kind of how well you recover like you just can't you need to rest and let it uh recover so uh i have in my head at least to make me happier um just set my expectations so low and i've just thought right declan rice and bakar saka you're gonna miss the first two three four weeks of the season um because then if they do recover in time and they do play that i'm happy i'm happy so it's self-preservation elliot i um i look because i love you and all of my english friends i i will root for you to go through but what i won't tell you is that deep down i'm rooting for you to crash out in heartbreaking fashion just don't tell anybody from openly i'm rooting for you that's what's important well you've just put it on the pod now so everyone's gonna hear and then it's fine it doesn't matter i understand where you're coming because there's a weird twisted dark part inside of me that is also wishing for that.
49:51Michael Timbs:Obviously, I don't, but yes. All right. USA plays tonight. Well past your bedtime, Timsy. I will be watching it. I'm excited for you. Yeah. Yeah. Are you excited for me? I don't know. Look, this is the measure of the ability for the team to just not be overcome by the moment. They'll have huge home support. Kareem Albegovic, I think is how you say it. Phil called him out on his preview diary. He mentioned him. 18-year-old Salzburg player, future superstar, been fantastic for Bosnia. He scored their first goal against Qatar. And that is a team that we, I say we, that being the United States, probably should beat, especially at home.
Read the full transcript
50:36But they are dangerous enough. And what I would say is the United States is going to press. And if the United States is going to press, that means there's going to be opportunities on the counter. and I still don't think our rest defense is great. And I think what you saw against Turkey is that, or Turkey, is that we can ship goals. So it could be a surprisingly exciting game with goals in it and I just hope we come out on top, that's all.
50:58Michael Timbs:Yeah, I think in a weird way, I think, so now it's got to the serious part of the tournament and there's no like given match now, it's straight knockout. You could still, you would need to play perfectly, but you could get to like the quarters feasibly because say you get past Bosnia not going to be an easy game and obviously first knockouts in a very long time like the pressure is going to be huge yeah but then you play either Belgium or Senegal which haven't been great so far both teams probably better than us but beatable yeah exactly that's and they're both a bit a bigger test than Bosnia would be but then you could if you play if you tighten up defense I I know you can't just like get a better defense during the tournament, but like, well, I've been saying we should, we should sign Saliba or Gabby and no one listens.
51:48Michael Timbs:Yeah. But then it just, if you somehow manage to find defensive solidity and keep that intensity with your, with your press and the way you attack, you could cause Belgium or Senegal problems. And then you're probably coming up against Portugal or Spain. And then I think you're done, but you never know. You can have a great run. So it'll be, it'll be fun. Regardless. Are you satisfied? you've had a fun experience no usa being in a web no okay no i i think i think you have to make in my mind given that it's at home and you want this to be regarded as a success i think making the quarterfinals would be a success i think you have to beat bosnia at home i think you have to i mean yeah you know that that's just the way this works i mean canada beat south africa they're to face Morocco.
52:37Like they probably gone as far as they should. I think we are a bigger footballing nation than Canada. I think if you want to call it a success, you have to beat a team that traditionally you might not have. And that is the round of 16 game against Belgium or Senegal. You win that, for me, unqualified success. Try not to get embarrassed by Portugal, Spain. Good tournament. If you beat Bosnia and crash out to Belgium or Senegal, then to me, it's just kind of the same thing. You're kind of the USA you've always been, which is good enough to get past teams that are also middling in world football, but not good enough to get, because Belgium and Senegal haven't been good.
53:14Senegal had to beat Iraq by five goals to qualify, and Belgium have been stinky, stinky bad.
53:19Michael Timbs:So like, you know, to me, go beat one of those teams. Can I say though, is I don't want to like temper your expectations or what you should expect as an American fan, but like, I would disagree and think that for, because you're not good so no but so can I say you you think that Mexico could knock England out in the Azteca right you think that's a thing that could happen there is more talent on the U.S. team currently than the Mexican team this is a better U.S. team and you're saying that Mexico could be hard for England in the Azteca but the U.S. has no right to get past stinky stinky Belgium or senegal in at home too like like i don't i don't get it you know but i'm saying for you i'm saying for me if it was like in terms of a fan and their expectations and like the u.s fans were hosting a world cup and like what what ignites i think the the the imagination of like the country yes and starts this ripple effect of like oh now kids can grow up and be like wow do you remember that need to just win like one knockout game i think that's all of course you might be disappointed it's like oh we couldn't beat the first good team we came up against right fine but i think just what's needed in just to like set the whole place alight is like you get to the knockouts great but now it's like there's no point get to the knockouts unless you win one i think you just need to win one and then it's like oh my god you could start to like believe and that's when i think you really get into the like okay this is we're having a good world cup and then if you go out against belgium or senegal it's easier to rationalize than if you go i agree if you go out against bosnia it's like well we got to the fucking knockouts and we couldn't even beat bosnia what was the point that was a shame there was potential there i think you just win one like canada and mexico have done and you've seen how big that was for them just win one knockout game and then you can start to believe and then you never know it's like well if we do this then we and now you're into the you've you're experiencing the world cup feelings that everyone else experiences yeah like dreaming okay so so i'll i want we gotta knock this on the head but i so firstly the first thing i want to say is that like remember this is around the 32 it's kind of a new manufactured thing so like that that makes it harder to analyze because this stage didn't exist before right um if you told me what our group was going to be and i admit in the preview i said we could get grouped i didn't think we were very good and part of it is self-protection because i just think the united states is not a good footballing nation and we've always been really bad on the national stage but like looking at the talent and looking at how we played what i'm trying to say is and if you told me that bosnia was going to be bosnia herzegov and it was going to be our around a 32 opponent i would say par is getting past them right not getting past them to me would be a failure in this tournament i think yeah getting past them would be par what i'm trying to say is if you want this to stand out as a historic World Cup where the U.S.
56:25really did something that goes beyond the expectations of us in a tournament, you've got to win that one more game. And by the way, the stinky, stinky Belgium and Senegal thing, like, they're not stinky, stinky. They both have more talent than we do. Like, they're both more storied in historic footballing nations than we are. I get it. But, like, they're not teams that, based on how I've watched them play, we should just be rolling. I mean, you know, Senegal are AFCON champions Belgium are coming at the tail end of a golden generation like both of them are better than us, I know that I'm joking, but like, you see what I'm saying I'm not saying losing to them would be failure, Timsy I'm saying the round of 16 would feel like par whereas getting to the quarterfinal and knocking out one of those teams would take this achievement to a level where it becomes us doing something really special, and I'm telling you from the zeitgeist of like the american sport fan who's not a football watcher like as a football watcher the fact that we get out of the group i think is great but the non-football watcher if we don't get past belgium or senegal and lose to like a more renowned powerhouse like portugal or spain the non-football watcher will probably be like oh we really weren't like i've got non-football fans timsey saying to me so could we win it could we win the world cup you you you cannot overestimate the the non-ball knowledge going on here man you cannot you don't you got you really gotta put perspective you know and they're asking me like i'm an expert on the international game but i'm like no we can't win it's like we we could win it right like we could and i'm like no we absolutely can't win it so you know yeah yeah no okay i see where you're coming
57:59Michael Timbs:from i i would just maybe my you're as as a as a ball knower um your par is just one step ahead of where I think the US is reasonable for the US person, a US par should be, where it's like as soon as you win a knockout game, and I know there's now one more knockout game. I know there's an asterisk and it doesn't really count, but tell that to Mexico. They just did it, and now they're in the last 16. And look at the state of their fans. And they're Mexico fans. They're ball knowers through and through. So can I ask you, if Mexico crash out to England or DR Congo, In the next round, if Mexico crashed out in the next round, had they had a successful World Cup?
58:43I would say on the whole, yes. Okay, then fair enough. Then that's fair because I think we have the similar expectations
58:49Michael Timbs:to this Mexico team. Yeah, but we're both consistent with our opinions. They're just slightly on different tracks. Fair enough. Because by the way, I don't think you can look at the Mexican team and their recent history in international football and our team and our recent history in international football and say that there's much daylight between the two. Like if I just offered you, you were starting a club team and you had to pick one of those nation's players right now. I don't know that you definitely pick Mexico's, you know? But what I would say is like for Mexico, getting to the first knockout game and actually winning a knockout game.
59:27Michael Timbs:And I know, as I said before, at the start of the show, it was like, it's not the same Quinto Partido as they have experienced before. but you watch their scenes it's like it doesn't matter they they don't care like they they've done it they've done it and i know it's a bit weirder because now they're still in the last 16 and it's that's where they've always struggled but like they made history sort of in their own way and i think that's just what the u.s needs because you're not as great a a country football wise in terms of footballing history as mexico are and you're still you know a host nation and you're going through the same kind of emotions battling all i guess the same sort of historical problems um and this is your chance to do it and i just feel like that's where this is the this is the game that really uh tips you over the edge of like having failed and having succeeded and i just think winning this game instead of it being the next game i feel like it's this game which is the one that is gonna like we beat bosnia with we know what it feels like to win a knockout game in the World Cup.
1:00:31That's fair. For most countries, that's what it's all about. I think we're aligned in this respect, right? Fail to beat Bosnia, I think not a good World Cup for the US. Absolutely failed. Especially on home soil. Beat Bosnia, get to the round of 16. To your point, it's par. So where we're just disagreeing is like, if we lose in that round, I don't think people will be like, wow, we had a great World Cup. Whereas you're saying we should feel good about that World Cup. I think to feel really good about it, we've got to go. one step past that that's what i'm saying you gotta beat one team in the knockouts that's a known international quantity you gotta have you know what i mean you gotta have that one on your
1:01:09Michael Timbs:resume that one that one the win the good yeah okay fine i i would agree but i just think like the the feeling you're gonna get if you beat bosnia those four five days leading up to the last 16 game against belgium or senegal that's when the feelings start of like dreaming and you're like this is it we're in the thick of it now we're playing with the big boys and like that's that's i think what most world cup nation like fans crave is that feeling of like we we're mixing it with the the true greats and the the giants of world football and that's what i think you'll get after that game then if you beat belgium and senegal yeah then you're in dreamland then you're going what the hell was happening and we we could win the whole thing and i don't care that it's delusional like this is that's what that's the next level of of uh just world cup here fair and here's what will happen instead we'll get to the semi-final we'll narrowly crash out to to france and then we will fail to qualify for the next world cup as the u.s soccer federation screws it all up that that's how it goes here okay uh yikes bumper episode uh get to the pub go drink go watch england we'll talk to you tomorrow thanks timsy uh no thank you so much come on England main pod tomorrow uh Friday Night Clive on Friday and of course the World Cup daily rolls on much love to all of you who tolerate this absolute utter nonsense yeah also also as a final one uh big up stock rising the next game big Gabby against Haaland that's gonna be fun that's right Gabby against Haaland yeah yeah uh all right and we already had Saliba against Holland and so let's hope Gabby comes out on top.
1:02:51All right. Or like looks good, plays well, crashes out, comes home. That'd be fine too. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:02:56Michael Timbs:Bullies hauled it off the pitch but they lose. Great. Let's keep going. Make it a two-hour World Cup deal. That's what everybody likes. We love you. Come on, three lions. Come on. Come on, you lions. And we will talk to you after World Cup 10. We'll see you in the next one.
1:03:21Thank you.
