In short
Arsenal transfer talk plus World Cup group-stage reaction. Guests discuss whether Bruno Guimaraes is a good Arsenal fit, how he could allow Declan Rice to be rested, and compare him to other midfield targets (e.g., Zubimendi, Tonali). They then review World Cup results: Ecuador advancing after beating Germany, and the USA losing to Turkey in a rotated, “job-done” match; they also mention Japan’s standout team goal and Sweden’s/other teams’ progression.
Key claims
Guimaraes is a “needle-mover” midfielder who could influence both attack and progression; the USA’s rotated lineup was smart and produced enjoyable, urgent football despite defensive issues.
Notable examples
Ecuador’s two decisive goals (including a controversial early goal allowed by VAR); USA pressing/directness and Pulisic’s through-ball chance; Japan’s slide-rule through ball leading to a low finish; stock-falling examples include Sweden’s/strikers’ poor Japan/Sweden games (Izak/Jokras) and Tunisia’s 0 points/12 conceded.

0:25You may have watched Hours of Football yesterday, but I'm still trying to make it through Hand of Arsenal's latest update. This is the World Cup Daily. My name is Elliot Spithing. That's right. Hand of Arsenal has been busy updating us on Arsenal Transfer News. The latest update is in that sort of like three to four thousand word length where you can curl up with a nice cup of coffee and spend the evening reading it, put a blanket on. But I do appreciate his hard work keeping us all informed of what's going on because there are things going on and we're going going to be talking about them soon bruno grimares seems to be on the agenda as are several other midfielders as are several forwards and it does seem that andrea berda's approach is to want all the players and keep us guessing until the players arrive so that's fine we've got world cup to tide us over and it wouldn't be the world cup if we didn't have timsey hey tims hello how are you doing yeah yeah man i'm i'm all right smart thanks yeah it's the it's the haircut uh yeah it takes literal months off my age it makes me makes me look months younger um and i think it does it does my hair person for that i appreciate that uh you're looking well as ever a lot of uh martinelli doppelganger comments have been coming through so okay yeah i can see that i can see that he has a
1:42Michael Timbs:he has a more opaque beard mustache combo mine's a bit lighter that that's yeah that's the only otherwise you're basically the same can you beat a man off the dribble 1v1 from the left wing you know what i i have okay so you're not exactly the same then oh touche that's actually i'm sorry no no no there's you're actually complimenting me and dissing martinelli so well yeah i'm sorry i'm apologizing to gabriel martinelli just to be clear um all right let's let's get into this uh headline stock rising stock falling is the format we're going to use today uh for those who aren't familiar uh but it is literally the format we use every day.
2:22I guess I'll just ask you super quick, Timsy. What do you think of Bruno Guimaraes? You think a good choice for Arsenal? I think good.
2:29Michael Timbs:I think he would... It means we could rest deck Rice more. Deck Rice, I've never said that before in my life. I wanted to say deck, but it means we can rest deck a lot more because as much as I think they would play together, I still don't know what the what the deal with Zubimendi will be and with Myles if Myles is still just going to be that player now I'm not sure but I would be happy if we got him just because I mean you can't have enough good players really and he is a very good player I just don't know if he would necessarily start, I guess he would uh i'm not i honestly don't know okay i'm gonna i'm gonna say this right so first of all i i don't like him of course he's been a real pain in the ass uh since he's been at newcastle i wanted us to sign him when he went to newcastle and i thought we missed a trick there i think he is one of the few needle mover midfielders we could get where i think it legitimately pretty significantly improves us and increases our odds of winning things like i think he is about the the best possible midfielder we could add, except he is going to be 29 in November, and it's a bit of a weird age to be bringing him in.
3:58So if it was 60 million, I mean, 60 million these days isn't that outrageous. If Newcastle could be tempted, I think he has two years left on his deal. He's going to be 29. Can they hold him? I think he had Juraption's involved, which also makes it a little bit tricky, as we know from the Raul days, but more than Alex Scott, more than Ayub Bouadi, more than any of the midfielders we're linked with. And I put Morgan Rodgers in a different category because I think of him as more of an attacking influence. And I think he's a player we need. But I think if you put Declan Rice and Bruno Glimmerich on the pitch together with name your player as a, first of all, you could platform as a more that way, I think.
4:35Odegaard certainly would look sensational next to him. Morgan Rodgers, you'd have an incredible tigerish, aggressive, progressive midfield. Like he's a huge needle mover for me that if we can get him. I like it, but it would be an unusual move based on the moves we made in the past, in my view, just given that he's going to be 29 and Newcastle are... I think the problem for Newcastle are optics. Even if they're in a bad spot with him contractually and age-wise and cashing in might make sense. He's their captain. They might be losing Tenali. They can't lose both. It's kind of like when Arsene Wenger said about Seska and Nazri, you know, you can't lose both these players and claim to be a big club.
5:13I think Newcastle will feel they can't afford to lose both of those players. okay yeah i mean i don't know if the is it going to be a double pivot i know you hate the double
5:23Michael Timbs:pivot is it is because i liked at the end of the seat towards the end of the season when obviously deck was playing a lot deeper and i think that regained some control in the in in the games that we played uh compared to when he was playing as more of like the mobile number eight and um he's always mobile but played more strictly as the eight and then zuby was the last man and he was the one playing the kind of anchor and i preferred it when we kind of switched um but i don't know yeah i don't know how he'd fit maybe it would be you you seem i mean i'll just say it you seem less convinced than i do yeah you can tell me i'm out of my mind no no not at all as in I'm not I'm not I'm convinced of the player absolutely like I I do like him as a player obviously yeah we don't like him because he plays well against us but like well and also because he elbowed was it Jorginho in the head and he's been a bit rough yeah yeah yeah he's nasty but then like imagine that nastiness for us you know but I think I'm absolutely convinced of the player in the same way that I'm convinced of Tonali I would just in my head see Tonali fitting in more naturally than uh interesting so you really liked it's funny i'm the total other way i think glimmerish makes so much sense for us and tonali and again this is where it gets tough right because for me one of the big all-putting things about tonali is is the fee it looks like it's going to be north of 85 million and i just i don't get it um so yeah maybe i'm maybe i've got it backwards is to me i think what makes grima rice special is i think he can influence the game in the attacking third and still give you that sort of ball progression that deep ball progression and dual winning and aggressiveness i think he's he's sort of a a mini declan rice he's not as good as rice obviously but i think he can influence the game in both areas more than i think tenali can okay well in which case i will agree with you and i think we should get him because i want declinize to rest as much as possible and we have no idea what the state of declinize is for the third game in the group stage and you start to think about he's okay like pairings rice cream and name your third and you've got a world-class midfield but in other games if you need to manage your way through a season grima rice zubomendi and odegaard grima rice miles lewis skelly and and marino you can create all kinds of fun fun puzzle pieces and i realized like alex scott's still out there but to me alex scott's an exciting one too i'd be excited about but like the the best premier league midfielder that we've been linked with in my mind is bruno game and i yeah i accept again deal deal dynamics wise like in terms of his age for his price plus the complexity of getting him out of newcastle it may not work but this has been your transfer for daily thanks for joining okay i'm kidding um so i am going to give you the first headline what do you got uh my first headline would be uh two two similar ones i i've got one it's either the the ecuador germany game or you the usa turkey i'll go with the usa turkey as you know because you're american i'm gonna go with you know ecuador germany i'll leave you uh the the u.s job so Ecuador getting through really happy for the Ecuadorians more specifically of course in Capier and for me anyway Germany it's it was probably their their toughest challenge I don't know and and and maybe the fact that they just obviously won the first two games and mentally they knew they were through so it's kind of hard to g yourself up for that third game um but the ecuador were were good i think and um obviously they had a lot more riding on it and they had to win in order to in capier brilliant i thought in capier's great um i mean they're they're just like quite a good side like we saw in there in that first game i felt like they were quite unlucky um i mean in both games they kind of rude their their chances the fact that their missed chances sorry um so the fact that they've actually scored um yeah two decisive goals uh is yeah good for them yeah and not conceded stupid stupid that's got massively screwed because i have absolutely no idea how the opening goal was allowed like it was yeah your foul kick to the face yeah yeah it's gotta be just wow it went to var as well and slowed down you're going like i i get that he wins it i get that he wins the ball it's always i'm always a bit undecided about those ones where like about someone goes with their head another person goes with their foot the person with the foot wins it because obviously it's it's you can get to the ball quicker just by flinging a foot but then yeah so then it's so high though it's one thing if you stoop down to but this is a case of the boot is head height you like i've i agree like if you stoop down to use your head and someone's boot is in a sort of natural boot location like yeah fine but this was this was like a can can kick it was like a kick line at a dance show i went to my my six-year-old daughter's dance recital last night like this this is the legs this leg was higher than any of those six-year-old legs got you know what i mean oh yeah i just yeah i always feel like if you win it though and then it's almost his head then anyway it doesn't it doesn't really matter like ecuador won so they won i like your headline i think it's a good one yeah i'm happy for them too i i think they're a bit unlucky uh if they no no no no well they're through they're 100 % through yeah yeah yeah 100 % through um okay i'm going to go with my headline is and it look i'm gonna i'm gonna say it through sick in my mouth okay okay thank you mauricio pochettino thank you mauricio pochettino and you might say why are you saying that the u.s lost mauricio pochettino a couple of reasons i'm thinking first of all the united states is not a footballing country and there's going to be a lot of neutrals who are invested in the u.s story who will just think oh the U.S.
12:04lost maybe we're not that good and won't realize this game didn't matter. Mauricio Pochettino didn't manage this game for the the ignorati he managed it for what needed to be done and he started a completely rotated team which was the absolute right thing to do and protected his players gave some of his key players some minutes late so that they don't go too long without football in their legs. I thought it was a master class of management in that sense but the other reason I'm thanking him is this I've watched the U.S. men's national team a lot look I'm I'm not a follower of the U.S. men's national team but I watched them in major tournaments and major qualifiers and stuff this is the most i've enjoyed watching this this national team play even last night with the rotate team the tempo the urgency it was a fun game now you could say well it was a fun game because no one had anything to lose and everyone had everything to gain and like all right maybe there's some of that but like the the pressing the the directness the urgency to get it forward the ability to keep the ball some of the chances the united states created were really really excellent balls played through the midfield when Pulisic came on he was played in through the middle he laid one off there was this beautiful combination play some of the defending was catastrophic the rest defense I'm not convinced was very good but it's backup defenders in a team that's not really got great defenders to begin with but for me watching the United States I've watched three games in this tournament and I've other than a half against Australia where I think we had that kind of weird it's two goals let's sit on it and that didn't work I've really enjoyed watching and as a national team fan if you if you're the fan of a national team that has let's say it virtually no ambition to win a tournament i i think there are going to be u.s fans who will yell at me for that but like you know unless you're england france spain brazil argentina like what are your goals your goals are to get through get as deep as you realistically can and enjoy watching your team play and i have to say this is the most fun i've had watching he started the right lineup i think he got it spot on i think he got a great performance out of the backups i think it's been fun to watch the u.s team play and for that i think the united states which has been saddled with horrendous horrendous managers for years this is this is a lovely thing
14:13Michael Timbs:for me so i i thank him through sick and gritted teeth yeah i think you're you're you're absolutely right to as well and i think going forward you've you've obviously had a very like poor history of following the US because they just haven't been good and the fact that now there are signs and even just the way you play is a sign of you being like a good enough side to potentially go on a run I think it does galvanize the US fans right so it's not just you're supporting them because you know you have to and probably going to lose probably going to get dumped out the groups and that was a waste of time but I supported the US anyway this time it's like not only is there potential but you're kind of delivering on that potential in the way you're playing and the results you're getting so I think it it does it galvanizes a lot of fans to be like oh this is what it's actually this is what it's always been able to be about and then this loss is you can kind of dismiss it because you're already through you did the hard work and turkey not a bad side they were playing for nothing and fine um but then it's almost like the u.s fans are getting to have a taste of like what it's like to support a team at the world cup you've always you know whenever you've been at the world cup fine but this is like now we're getting serious to the serious stages and you you've built hope because you're like oh we can actually play good football and now you'll get I think you're getting a wider uh experience of like what a world cup fandom could be like so now as you get into the you're starting to feel how like we sometimes feel we'll be like oh no we're actually starting to play good football now and then ultimately it ends in terrible heartbreak but you're going to learn that and it's going to be great yeah and and by the way I think the nice thing for me is I know that's coming there are others that don't and that will be hard for them but for me to see a manager make smart choices to not pick his lineup based on what he thinks the sort of non-football knowing community will want to see, to not feel, gosh, I'm in LA and Brad Pitt's here and all the celebrities are here, I better start Pulisic.
16:26Like he made the right lineup choice, and then he got a performance that I think he could feel proud of. And by the way, I know this is going to sound like me just maybe protecting USA a little bit because they lost, but I think Turkey are an excellent team. They clearly underperformed expectation. Yilmaz, Yildiz, Guler good players in that team Guler pulled the strings, he was excellent in this game, I think Turkey deserved something from this tournament with the talent they have I'm glad they at least get to go home to their football mad nation with this win, it doesn't hurt the USA in any sense and it provides them a bit of something because I think to have 62 shots in two games, whatever it was, and no goals and to go home having not won a game I think would have been very harsh on them, so all in all I'm fine with it, I think um do we have another headline you want to you want to shoot a quick like a bullet point headline
17:19Michael Timbs:yes nicholas pepe the forgotten man i miss him i love him can i say i've come all the way back around to having a soft spot for him now when did you not i've always had a soft spot well look he he played for us at a time when he was a huge expensive signing he never hit the heights he played during i would say the nadir of the club in the in this century probably at the absolute lowest ebb of this club's 2000 you know of this century of this club and he was in a mess and there's a part of me that still believes you know maybe he struggles with the mentality at the highest level but had he been able to play for an arteta team that had more quality in it and more discipline the talent is there he scored beautiful goals he's he's he's a bit of everything right a yellow card steps on the ball falls it's a bit of the nani experience but i think with a better left foot yeah yeah yeah yeah and also i think better technically as well like i think he was just the full guy for as you say that that that absolute nadir period where we were horrendous and i think he at a time when we needed people to be absolutely disciplined and care and show that they care and he he was the one where it's it's in his nature when he plays football he just looks so languid and like it looks easy because he is very good that it is it would have been it was basically he was one of the easiest people to blame when really I actually think he got relatively little time um and didn't have the the say the built-up credit as a Bamiyang would have or you know so he actually was quite unlucky with with with that anyway he's back so yeah maybe we sign him again um yeah get your checkbook out um okay yeah two goals great play i love it i agree i'm gonna hit you with one more bullet point before we get to the stocks and it's going to be our saley goal of the day that's right uh the saley goal of the day is coming up but before the saley goal of the day i'll tell you about saley it's an app you put on your phone it's an eSIM and like back when SIM cards were a thing I they still are some people still use them and they're terrible I hated them I was like this idea that I can't just bring my phone somewhere and use it was really annoying so I'd inevitably wind up just using my cell plan because I didn't want to buy some chip and then you have to get a tool for your iPhone or your Android phone to like unscrew a port and put a card in and then you lose that little port cover totally crazy and now it works the way it should you put this app on your phone you buy a plan and you travel the world with local phones wherever you go using data that costs a fraction i mean if you travel once in a year and use an e-sim from saley instead of using your data plan you paid for your saley plan for that year so just do it get saley it also is from the nordvpn people so it gives you security and safety and ad blockers so you use less data uh download the saley app get uh use code arsenal vision to get 15 off and 15 off i'm doing the math just carry the ones that is 15 percent off so arsenal visions the code yeah exactly that's how that works arsenal visions the code salie is the app do it now my goal of the day is the japan goal i was torn between that and the other goal in this game yes but it was one of the nicer footballing goals we've had in this tournament yeah nice team goal like really nice movement good play through the midfield a slide rude ball between side rule ball between defenders to the onrushing striker finished low and to the keeper's right he kind of you know cut it back it's an excellent finish just a lovely team goal so that's my goal of the day we'll move to the stocks and i will ask you timsy who is your stock rising we'll each do one of these and one stock falling i okay i'm a bit undecided because i've i've did the headline but i would have said uh pepe for stock rising i've got another choice for you from the game that i just picked the stock rising from oh yeah sure sure um but i would i would say pepe stock is rising but it's not going to lead to anywhere so it's almost like what's the point of it rising it's a stock rising but it's not a tradable stock so there you can't buy it that's exactly what's a great development on my analogy it's in the lockup period following ipo you know what we'll get matt giant gunner on here and he'll explain it all to us go for it sorry um yeah uh alanga alanga is uh their danger man because as much as i think um obviously isak and gyokeres are a handful um i was i was maybe less impressed by gyokeres as i was for when they got absolutely popped uh by by the netherlands i was weirdly uh positive and be like oh they actually caused them a lot of trouble uh and yeah I want Giocares to to do something you know I think it's gotten to this stage in the microcosm like this world cup we are now at the part of the season the part of the world cup in the equivalent part of the premier league where we were like we need something more um so I want that but uh Ilanga is as we know in in the premier league an absolute handful he is so quick and dangerous and also i think probably doesn't get enough credit for his technical ability because he is just like so so quick um but it was a great finish took me by surprise i think was unbelievable on his left foot and um he's proving to be sweden's go-to guy um with which with their roster as you say is quite impressive i i i don't say roster please please don't accuse me of saying roster i'm a proper football man timsey i wouldn't would never say roster the squad i'll educate you on the proper uh british way to talk about football at some point it's fine uh i owe a stock rising i do think alanga like is a great pick and he i've said this before but it hasn't worked out for him at newcastle i was always so scared of him at forest i those players who can run fast are just scary to me but a lot of them don't kick the ball good and uh he he kicked the ball good let me tell you that was a stunning stunning goal so kudos to him um i'm gonna give my stock rising it's a soft spot stock rising i admit i i'm gonna give it to in capier i thought he was excellent he was playing almost like an attacker i love and and the better stock rising probably is ecuador's manager who had been getting pelters throughout this tournament and rumor has it the ecuadorian people not super happy with him he gets his moment he gets his win to see them through they are going to be tricky tricky opposition at least I would think they look you know Caicedo's in that team and Cappie's in that team but I thought in Cappie was great he was going forward he was attacking he had opportunities to to score uh and to create goals which I thought he did you know he he was influential in the attacking areas he obviously got back and did his defending well he's a player that just officially signed for arsenal so um you know as the news breaks that arsenal have formalized that signing piero and capi and moises caicedo great deal as it stands right now set to face england do we get the caicedo declan rice matchup again uh we may indeed be getting that as ecuador currently currently set to face england could that change i i don't know i i think as it stands yes it can change but I think yeah it was either I mean there's some great Brazil Japan is going to be so much fun um yeah get onto that anyway but the one thing I would note as well on that is um Hincapié it's interesting to him for for me to see him still play that like he obviously like bombs up and down the left-hand side but also does like to tuck in and overload the midfield alongside Kaiseido and I just don't know if that's like is that Ecuador's policy as well Is it like, are they borrowing from Mikel or is he just doing it because he's like, this is how I play at Arsenal.
25:23Michael Timbs:So this is how I'm going to play for my national team. I don't know if that's like just a, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. International managers also like, do what you do at Arsenal. Do that thing where you tuck in and overload the midfield as well. And then we'll use another person. It was really interesting. Yeah. And you know what it is? because I'm always impressed when an international manager can add a bit of sort of like club team tactical innovation in a tournament because it's so hard to do. And it was clearly, you know, he was going up and tucking into that sort of like half space at the top of the box.
25:56Like it was really interesting.
25:57Michael Timbs:Anyway, kudos to him, kudos to them. We need stocks falling and I've got a few in mind. Who are you going to go with? All right. I'm going to go with the, just so people don't think I'm picking on him I'm gonna go with the strike partnership of Izak and Jokras okay they were both dreadful like dreadful dreadful Jokras and I have to say to defend Jokras I watched a lot of that game most of that game because the other one didn't really matter the he's just refereed so weirdly because he's a big strong guy you're allowed to be more physical with him hold him put your arms around him drag him and he was getting frustrated with the way that they were defending him and I think it got to him and affected his game but he and Isaac were really bad in my mind and Jokeras probably to be fair slightly worse the commentators were on his back too which was annoying me because you know it's one of those things I can criticize my Arsenal players you can't criticize my Arsenal players we can do that to our pledges you can't do that to our pledges but but so yeah basically for me Timsey like two very very good strikers and you You could say, well, it's the service.
27:03I'm not convinced it was just the service in this case. I thought that they both had poor games against Japan and Sweden are through. And they're going to be dangerous for anyone because with that firepower up front, there's always a chance they could do something, but they're going to have to be way better than they were in that game.
27:17Michael Timbs:Yeah, totally fair. Who have you got for stock falling? I've got to give it to Tunisia. Really? Okay. Zero points. Yep. Stocks falling. Which of their no points did you like best? I liked all of them equally but also conceding 12 goals and just like because even you look across like Haiti finished with zero points they conceded eight and then Haiti and then like Qatar finished with one but they also produced some fun moments too at least Haiti had the Isidore goal like they did some things yeah yeah yeah yeah they flirted with the idea of like getting some points and gave it the rule whereas Tunisia is just you got nothing from them they rolled over yeah yeah and it's just yeah it was not not good to see so um i'll give it to them like they'll be hugely disappointed as well i would say that was a very tough group like three competent teams in sweden japan and the netherlands who tunisia would have been expected to lose to you know but but oh yeah exactly but also i would say like you would want out of three games you'd back yourself to like maybe first banner in the works for one of them and then it like kind of puts the rest of the group into oh who's going to finish where whereas like of course all three of them finished because they all battered tunisia and then a draw means they basically all get through um yeah yeah i'm so i'm gonna i'm gonna throw out one more just bullet point stock falling it's because it's neither of their fault i know why they did it but we got our first handshake draw of the tournament essentially between paraguay and australia paraguay and australia produced less than one expected goal combined it produced 21 total 21 total box touches in the game yeah um these teams did not go for it they didn't have any reason to go for it i understand why they did that but you hate to see it so that's a stock that was the the new world cup was supposed to reduce the number of games with kind of predetermined almost results or yeah as you say it's sort of the first one we've seen you know i think it is inevitable anyway like yeah it's super hard to make them all matter and i think you know uh the fact that we've got this far into it and we've only got like a few more days of uh group stages is you know it's not bad it's fine we got an interesting day today um the big game of course is france norway very very excited for that um it is a battle for top spot and the way it shakes out a draw would be good enough to see France in top spot a win for Norway would take them to top spot and given that Senegal have no points in Iraq have no points in that group like that's also they can go for it they can really go for it um so both of them can can try to win that game Senegal in that group I will just say by the way I don't think they're officially out I could be wrong about that but I think to not be out they'd have to essentially like win by like four clear goals or something yeah yeah i mean actually no let me rephrase i i think three goals winning by three goals would probably do it i don't know they need to win people who are smarter than we are can figure that out yeah well their their goal for differences minus three so so yeah so that so they need to they need to win and let's put it this way if they win by even one goal they'd move past scotland so i guess move past scotland that wouldn't guarantee them to qualify but belgium yeah dr congo and cabaverde who've already got uh sorry two points dr congo's got one but so belgium today play new zealand egypt play iran um if belgium can't tuck away new zealand they don't deserve anything yeah i'm sorry they they i love you leo but you just go home yeah just like that's embarrassing they have one goal so far Belgium I mean it's been a really really tough watch in terms of them getting it done so that's a game to keep an eye on and then Uruguay Spain um you know Spain can't lose that game and finish top so they they will want to at least get a draw on Uruguay have like candidly I think they've been dreadful but there's something to fight for there but if Spain can beat them Cape Verde Saudi Arabia gives Cape Verde a legit chance to progress and that will be one that I will definitely be paying attention to.
31:44Yeah, for sure. Any thoughts across those?
31:50Michael Timbs:Norway, France would just be interesting to see who comes out on top spot just because then I don't know if that's as it stands, isn't it? So France against Sweden as it stands, but obviously depending on who finishes top, that might swap. And then Norway against Ivory Coast. so if those are the two games that they're kind of playing for that is you know Norway I'm guessing will be I don't know who Sweden or Ivory Coast who would I rather play I mean I don't think France are that bothered but I think it means more to Norway just because you know they're just not as good a side it was also nice to hear from Erling Haaland after I think it was after their win like securing their place in the knockouts and then it's like worried about France and stuff it's like they're just they're probably going to win oh yeah because he's like yeah, the final group, like, are you going to go for it?
32:39Michael Timbs:Do you think you can win this? Like, they're going to win. They're probably going to win the whole fucking competition. I'm going, I really rate your candor. So I don't like him, just to make it clear. But I think he might be a great guy. Okay, I am going to knock this one on the head here. I hope you enjoyed the transfer chat at the beginning.
