In short
World Cup Daily episode reviewing the day’s matches through an Arsenal lens, focusing on Arsenal-linked scorers and “stocks rising/falling” reactions, plus previews of games today.
Guests
Lewis Ambrose (football analyst/commentator; discusses Arsenal players at the tournament, Germany/Sweden/Japan performances, and transfer-linked prospects). Host Michael Timms (“Timsy”) leads.
Key claims
- Kai Havertz and Victor Gyokeres’ goals are a major Arsenal-positive headline; Havertz’s role is praised as “scaffolding”/platform-building rather than a pure poacher.
- Sweden’s 5-1 win shows Isak and Gyokeres as a rare effective front two.
- Germany look strong after a 7-? win vs Curaçao, but the right side/wide winger issue (Leroy Sané) could be a vulnerability.
- Japan’s comeback and tactical wing-back use (Doan/Nakamura) mark them as a dark horse.
Notable examples
- Sweden 5-1 Tunisia: Isak and Gyokeres off the mark; Isak’s goal and Gyokeres’ bullying/combining.
- Germany vs Curaçao: Havertz chipped finish; Thomas Müller praising Havertz’s fit.
- Japan comeback vs Netherlands: Nakamura’s pivoted near-post finish; Japan’s wing-back system.
- Ecuador vs Ivory Coast: late Amadiyalo goal; Ecuador missed chances (posts/crossbar).

0:24Michael Timbs:And then I'm guessing this is good now right. you're recording I'm recording sweet cool right here we go
0:39Michael Timbs:hello everyone and welcome to the Arsenal Vision podcast the World Cup daily it is your one-stop shop for the World Cup through an Arsenal lens and with a sprinkling of analysis my name is Michael Timms otherwise known as Timsy I'm going to be your host and I am joined today for the analysis part especially because you're not getting it from me it is lewis ambrose how are
1:00Lewis Ambrose:you doing lewis a sprinkling though you did only promise a sprinkling not full-on no yeah i'm good analysis definitely definitely i'm good i'm good thank you the the mood in the mood in germany is is good after they obviously scored plenty of goals yesterday and my mood's good after kai havert scored a couple of them so yeah yeah that is uh i think a lot of us were
1:25Michael Timbs:had that game earmarked as well as the Sweden one and we'll get into those. Lots of football now. It feels like we're fully in the swing of things. Four games a day, maybe five if you count ones that kind of go overnight as well because Australia-Turkey technically finished yesterday morning in the US. So four games, Germany-Curussell, Netherlands-Japan, Ivory Coast-Ecuador and Sweden-Tunisia. As always, we're going to go through I'm going to by the way sorry Elliot is not here he's trusted me with the hosting abilities stupidly but I'm going to do my best here and we're going to go through the headlines then obviously stops rising stops falling and then have a little chat if we have time about the games that are going to be happening today so Lewis I'll leave the first headline with you what are you thinking
2:21Lewis Ambrose:Arsenal are going to win the World Cup in some form or another yeah yeah yeah yeah it was a good day it was a good day for arsenal um if that yeah if that's a if that's a an all right enough headlines that was the that was the famous was it the daily mirror in 1998 um after viera assisted petit for france's last goal with the world cup final i think they had their back page after the world cup final was arsenal win the world cup so that's that's my shout is this it's happening again um yeah and like just nice just nice to see i think it's always nice to see your players doing well at a tournament uh i definitely always watch a tournament sort of no matter who they're playing for kind of rooting for arsenal players to to score goals and do well and uh there were yeah goals for kai havertz victor jokeres yesterday I thought the Havertz one and the Germany game is maybe a bit less interesting because of the opposition but I thought Sweden I didn't really know what to expect from Sweden obviously they had like a horrendous qualifying campaign and just snuck through the back door into the World Cup and then you've had Alexander Isaac having a really weird season where he started the season not fit enough to play Premier League football as he became the most expensive player in Premier League history then finally started to look all right and then broke his leg and or had Mickey Van der Ven break his leg and then he's it was season over halfway through the season so I think this World Cup I didn't really know what to expect Jeff from him and him and Jokeres as a partnership you don't get many front twos nowadays yeah it's a bit of a anyone who kind of wants to watch attacking football and strikers and strike partnerships uh probably good news yeah the the pair of them looked quite sharp uh against against Tunisia
4:22Michael Timbs:and both off the off the mark yeah for sure i mean we briefly talk about that that sweden game obviously 5-1's quite an emphatic win um i wasn't quite sure what kind of resistance Tunisia were going to put up but evidently not not too much and yeah like you i was quite happy to see the the the front two make an appearance because I think pretty much for everyone else they're going with just a solo strike I mean they just aren't that many world-class strikers yeah you know about in in in world football to be honest so uh to have those two up top and yeah Isaac looked relatively good obviously it's been a while since he's been he's been you know properly playing at like full flow and then Gokerez them two combining especially for I think it was Isaac's goal Gokoriz doing the Atletico Madrid at home performance of just bullying people and bringing others into play and we're like yes this is what we want and then scoring himself was was a great fun also shout out to Graham Potter because you just me anyway I forget that he's their guy and
5:27Lewis Ambrose:then seeing him celebrate on the touchline I'm like that's weird it is weird yeah it doesn't look I like when before he took over at Chelsea I quite liked Grandpa and then he took over at Chelsea and maybe it was the Chelsea of it all but he started to rub me up the wrong way but obviously he's he's a manager who had a really good spell at Brighton and then he's had a really rough time since then so it's it's quite there's something quite nice about seeing him in a job that he obviously means a lot to him having basically being an adopted Swede and then and then yeah getting off to a good start there's something quite nice about that i think is the the iri scored two beautiful goals in that game as well yeah um definitely with his like non-celebration the the lesser seen international
6:14Michael Timbs:non-celebration which actually to be fair i think does have there's a few uh like cross now cross nationality yeah players to be fair with suzuki for example in the the the japan goal who who has
6:28Lewis Ambrose:a few nationalities thrown around as well but yeah but he did celebrate the second i would say he was happy about the second yeah he was pleased with himself for the second he showed enough respect for the first one do you think it's also like when you score that one it's like well it's 5-1 lads it's not like he's this i've decided the game like 1-0 is a bit different to 5-1 i guess so maybe you can be like oh i did enjoy that actually yeah yeah i mean i think by the way rockets as well by the way i didn't mean that in a negative sense at all i have a lot more time for it than the club level non-celebration i think it's a lot more meaningful and makes a lot more sense to me than the sort of performative oh i was on low was it's in chenco against psv last season it's like you were you were on loan there for a bit like that's not even that's not even like a come on
7:17Michael Timbs:you couldn't have meant that much uh and now he's going to join the ajax as well so oh right it
7:23Lewis Ambrose:really couldn't have meant that much at all uh is his time at psv but yeah so like i some good goals jokeres and isak linking up well and and sweden i guess i didn't really know what yeah what to expect from them uh coming from this into the tournament so it's yeah it's interesting it makes that group look a lot more interesting i think where you sort of thought netherlands and japan would be battling out for top spot and then sweden go and score five goals and you have to
7:47Michael Timbs:sort of think well maybe maybe not it's a bit it's a bit like the uh what is it the group group c is it yeah with with scott the fact that scotland are top just because brazil and morocco played each other and kind of cancelled each other out it's a fairly similar situation um also another headline i'll go with obviously we were briefly talked about germany uh rewriting the record books as Elliot has written here um but putting seven past the the mighty Curaçao uh and to be honest it was nice to see Curaçao score a goal um it probably came a bit of a surprise that it was an equalizer but even then I think you watched a lot well even from from that goal onwards it was definitely a one-way street um seeing a few times just some of the defending you can't really judge it's a shame because obviously the germany do do look very good and they've got a lot obviously a lot of strength especially going forward uh but there were times when it was like they were just trying to pick like who they wanted to score almost it was it was it was it was i don't like it when it gets to that stage but uh as an aside obviously great that that haven't scored two the penalty and then the lovely like chipped chipped finish which uh which I think is a little bit of a trademark for Kai now.
9:10Michael Timbs:But they do look very strong. So I'd say that I actually had them down as one of the dark horses. I don't know if I said that publicly, but in my head, they were one of the dark horses just because they weren't getting quite the same love and attention that they were, for example, obviously during the Euros in 2024 and previous World Cups as well. so yeah I mean they've got a lot of strength I also do like just to always link it back to Arsenal the fact that Thomas Muller came out I think it was before the game it was yeah it was a few days ago and a few days ago sorry talking about how important Kai is and just if it was up to me he plays every minute because he is so it's like yes finally someone understands just how good this man is when he is fit um i thought that was a really really nice thing to hear especially from thomas muller who you can't really argue with when it comes to playing for germany
10:12Lewis Ambrose:yeah and being somebody that the attack like works around as well he said something along the lines of like i don't have to translate it he used the german word for like scaffolding he was like he was basically like yeah he's like basically saying like the team doesn't have anyone who offers that in the in the final third and i think he's trying to get at like you know like musiala and vertz who have all this magic that they bring but they'll sort of float around and and combine with quick one twos and little dribbles and that sort of thing but you need somebody who's like offering that wall pass and playing with his back to goal and sort of yeah offering a bit more physicality maybe as well and like i think he's completely right as well obviously like i think havertz is is perfect for sort of giving the platform some for some of those players to to express themselves maybe and yeah and i think if germany are going to be like dark horse they're going to need musiala and wertz to play really really well yeah what is the
11:12Michael Timbs:what is the impression of kai being based in germany yourself what is the everyday germans impression of kai havertz is he uh what would be the right word is he appreciated in the same way
11:28Lewis Ambrose:that maybe he is at arsenal nah i don't think so i don't think so at all i think there's like i'm not sure what it is i think there's an element of like out of sight out of mind when you've got players playing abroad and then you're seeing players obviously in Germany or for Bayern and like playing really well every week scoring goals and people kind of forget about you if you're playing in another country like I led to an even more extreme example Tony Kroos until he was like retired basically wasn't considered in Germany as like one of Germany's greatest ever midfielders or players and then it's like he's worshipped at Real Madrid but in Germany they're like is he that good really and it's like it's just because you don't see him because he's playing you know he's playing abroad and i think the other thing with with havertz playing up front especially is i do think the germans just love like a poacher you know klinsman and and miroslav closer i think they they think of like their number nine and they want a guy just sort of like getting on the end of things and poking the ball over the line and that's obviously not kai like yeah he does he does everything else to the absolute top level and then that's that part of being a striker probably loses out because he's combining and holding the ball up and those sorts of things so I think for Germans it's a bit like ah but he's not really a number nine uh and you know like like I say I I completely agree with like Thomas Muller and I think he that player who brings others into play
12:58Michael Timbs:and holds the ball up is what this journey needs yeah for sure uh so that being one headline we'll go for a final headline i'll leave it to you uh before moving on to stocks rising so if if there
13:11Lewis Ambrose:is another headline which i'm sure there is it's nothing new because everybody was saying it before the tournament but don't take your eyes off japan yeah i agree i know i know it's it's not original everybody basically was singling Japan out as their dark horses before the tournament but I think what impressed me last night, or it was night time for me anyway was that I didn't think they played very well but they kept, after conceding both goals, they came back they were sort of after not a particularly eventful first half more and more ambitious as the game went on had a look because obviously you know there are players that's that's the beauty of the world cup for me is like players that you've not seen players that you're not so familiar with and Nakamura who scored the first goal which I thought was a really really great goal because I just didn't think he had the angle to shoot like he's sort of facing away from goal and I don't know that much power as well yeah exactly like he pivoted his body and somehow got his foot right behind the ball and managed to and not even for the far post but to put it in towards the towards the near post but like you know he's that's not he's not a player i'm familiar with and he's playing like wing back for japan i had a little look after the game it's like oh i wonder where he plays it's like he plays he plays on the wing or up front for for rems in league two in france and i just like looking at so i look up where you where he plays usually it's like the last game of the season in france he played up front and he scored four and right that was my reaction
14:50Michael Timbs:why is this guy playing left wing back
14:52Lewis Ambrose:and like at right wing back as well they were playing with Ritsu Doan who plays as an out and out winger for Freiburg so they're just playing two wingers at wing back basically and even then that didn't seem to sacrifice the work rate and the organisation at the back and I just I'm looking forward to seeing more of that as they go on Netherlands probably the toughest game for them in the group we'll see about sweden uh but yeah the idea that they're playing two like proper wingers attack minded players as their wing backs i'm really interested to see if they keep going like netherlands i'm guessing i'm guessing they're going to keep doing it because you'd think if they'd have gone with a more defensive option it would have been in that game yesterday so i'm looking forward to seeing yeah if they if they keep trying to push on like that and
15:41Michael Timbs:i hope they do yeah for sure i mean it was the best i think it was the best I think that was the best 45 minutes we've seen at the World Cup so far just in terms of two proper international sides that always provide quite a lot of value and kind of going toe to toe and yeah it was it was almost I think they said it in commentary on on Fox Sports as well before Japan equalized it was like I wouldn't be surprised if this goes in the way the whole half has gone and then obviously it does uh it was a great a great half of football i i also had japan down i think i said yesterday to elliot i think japan i think i think i said they were going to win so maybe that was a bit too much but i like japan were going to be the surprise package and and provide a bit of a shock um but i also do like the fact that there are some examples of players who are like super talented for their own club but then when they go to international level like for example David Alaba for Austria would just then end up he's like he's not a centre-back or a left-back he's actually a number 10 just yeah and do his thing yeah Alphonso Davies plays like further forward right for Canada yeah I always do like that just finding out those those players of like where they play for their club it just shows how flexible they can be in in a different system and and the different levels of talent around them they can just play somewhere else and it actually works so yeah uh yeah like underline yeah alaba's a great example like just
17:12Lewis Ambrose:how just shows the quality you know playing left back for by munich for all those years and then it was like you get to a euros or a world cup and he's just popping up with the number eight shirt it's like that's that's great it's like it's as if you know he's turning around going like all right yeah lads but come on i'm the i'm the best player like just let me get on with it
17:30Michael Timbs:Exactly. So those are the headlines. I guess a brief mention of Amadiyalo scoring in basically the last minute against Ecuador. Oh, we forgot to mention, obviously, Hincapié at the back there who had a, I guess, decent game. But unfortunately losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast, even though Ecuador absolutely demolished them, I think, in terms of chances anyway. and like it's just they should have scored at least four maybe i think first half work four
18:02Lewis Ambrose:times as well the first half there was two that two like within a few minutes hitting that where they hit the bar yeah at that point i thought yeah like with the that sort of much talked about defensive record from qualifying as well uh i thought ivory close were in trouble but i know the different you bring amat d 'arlow off the bench and and maybe that was the difference you know like in the hot humidity and all that uh to be able to turn to like a stronger bench is probably going to be important right as the as the tournament goes on yeah for sure a lot a lot
18:35Michael Timbs:has been spoken about that so moving forward uh stocks rising i will i will give the first choice
18:41Lewis Ambrose:to you lewis i'm gonna stick with that game and uh go with yandy amande who gave hincapier a tougher test than a lot of players in the Premier League. Diamande's been linked with Liverpool already this summer. It was like 18 months ago, he was still playing semi-pro football in the US, I think. And he went to Leganes and played 10 times for Leganes and Leipzig signed him off the back of that. He's just had his first season in the Bundesliga and he's electric. and I think when you see a player doing that at club level it's quite nice when you then see them do it and then the sort of the world gets to see it he's not he's not Germany's secret anymore like yeah both feet he drives he takes people on he's incredibly quick feet skillful uh creative and yeah for I think he's he's like only 19-20 still uh but already looks like the man that Ivory Coaster like looking at well we've got the ball we've got to get it to him to make something happen yeah and yeah I mean Liverpool like I say we're already being linked with him and that's not going to go away off the back of a performance like that it might cost them a bit more money and they might have a bit more competition by the time the tournament's over but yeah you could see why Leipzig are going to be very very reluctant unless an enormous amount
20:09Michael Timbs:of money comes to the table which which wouldn't be a surprise if it did uh right nice I will I would go with uh off the pin I guess it's sort of linked to on the pitch but uh stocks rising to Virgil van Dijk hear me out for speaking out against the drinks breaks because nice I hadn't seen this so he uh spoke out i think it was after the game he's like basically just just a very sensible honest answer which you would get from virgil because he's obviously like a smart bloke and he just said that i get it when it's like super hot we have to have it but to have it at every game i think he said this anyway it's like it just it's a bit it breaks the game up to you what basically we're all thinking because i think it is probably linked to stocks falling i could put the drinks break in because I think it is one of the worst if it continues to be a thing it might be one of the worst things to happen to football in like genuinely quite a long time because it just totally changes the game yeah it makes it not a game of two halves but four quarters and like it's not nice to see like I'm obviously have no allegiance either way but even in the some of the games yesterday like Ivory Coast Ecuador like how much it changes the momentum of a game giving like a proper tactical break in the middle there of like two and three minutes let alone obviously run ads and stuff like that is whatever but actually having that uh established break in there i just think changes the the flow of a game too much to what we're used to you know aside from the benefits of like yeah okay it's really really hot and it's dangerous to keep playing fine but apart from that it's i'm not a fan so uh he would be my stocks rising is virgil van dyke for for being a spokesperson for the right thing no i love that i hadn't seen
22:01Lewis Ambrose:that you said that but that's um i'm glad i'm glad somebody has unless it's ai slot from a
22:07Michael Timbs:football purist in which i need to check that but i think he did say that stock falling ai slop
22:12Lewis Ambrose:yeah exactly uh yeah no that's i think that's great i completely agree as well by the way like the the momentum the sometimes a game is sort of like a slow burn and it sort of takes you 20 minutes for things to sort of find their rhythm and then it stops again for three minutes also like i'm kind of fed up with like an element of it that i'm that just annoys me i guess is we keep getting told oh young people aren't gonna enjoy football anymore because they don't have the attention span and we're gonna have to make games shorter or or do i don't know some crazy new rule changes every year there's something from like fifa or ueve there's some sort of suggestion because our young people they're just not going to like the game anymore florentino perez has a new idea or something and now it's like do you know what else we could do we could add extra half times like yeah that's that's really going to inspire the imagination in it yeah it's not nice it's not nice something i think i don't know if that was the netherlands game but at least one of the germany game i think like at least one of those games maybe both of them were played in air air-conditioned stadiums as well yesterday so it's like the the need for a drinks break when you're playing in a in a roof on air-conditioned stadium uh it seems a bit silly
23:26Michael Timbs:well we could go on forever about this but uh right we'll we'll we'll hit one more stocks rising and then we'll hit the stocks falling because i've got some ideas for them as well uh do you want to go with the other stock rising if you've got one in mind I would say Yari's maybe an obvious choice just because those two goals were unbelievable and the no celebration then celebration was a nice little arc and narrative in itself. but yeah obviously plays for Brighton I don't know if he's really because he's been on loan right he's been I'm not as a I would say as I don't have my eye on on the Brighton team as much as I maybe should because I don't care about Brighton but yeah it's nice it's I guess nice to see him score goals like that but I just I don't know I think he's probably using this opportunity, breaking out onto the world stage and maybe that's what players that are at Brighton and sort of not really making a name for themselves.
24:32Michael Timbs:Maybe he is, I don't know. But it was nice to see him score and celebrate.
24:37Lewis Ambrose:Yeah, two really nice goals as well. The strike. The first one was like a bit ruined by the goalkeeper being out the goal. Like aesthetically. like not to take anything away from him just the looks of the goal the second one was perfect and yeah I think he's had like a couple of decent seasons for Brighton but not like as like a centrepiece of the team kind of thing not lit the world alight and that would be like you say it's an opportunity for a player like that to sort of take a step and do something like that it's really nice yeah so
25:18Michael Timbs:yeah if you have another stocks rising you're more than welcome if not we can go on to stocks falling um nah
25:25Lewis Ambrose:we've touched on the Arsenal goal scorers I think yeah I think let's let's go to nice to see
25:32Michael Timbs:also as a final final nice to see Tommy Asso get on the pitch and play yeah yeah true you know
25:40Lewis Ambrose:and Pepe
25:40Michael Timbs:there's actually quite a few
25:42Lewis Ambrose:there were quite a few players that we saw yesterday who were kind of like throwback Tunisia's goal scored by Omar Rekic who never made an appearance for the Arsenal first team but was in reserves for a little while as well that's proper trivia that everywhere, they're everywhere
Read the full transcript
25:58Michael Timbs:right let's move on to Stops Falling do you have a nomination?
26:05Lewis Ambrose:see I kind of struggled with this one for yesterday's games because I think the Germany Curaçao one is not unexpected the other games I mean like Tunisia stand out but the other two games were close between sort of like four pretty good teams I think I'm going to go with Leroy Sané or like sort of Leroy Sané and by extension like one particular issue with the Germany squad which is that they do not have a winger that you can trust to perform so like that left hand side is great that left hand side you've got Wurz coming inside, Moussiala drifting drifting out there them two combining and then you've got uh nathaniel brown overlapping on the left got his first goal for germany yesterday and i think that's like there's a good chemistry there good combinations then on the other side of the pitch at right back you've got kimish who famously doesn't really fancy playing there and just is a midfielder really yeah but he can he's a midfielder who can play right back and germany don't have a right back so he just gets shoved out there which I don't think is the wrong thing to do but I do think when they come up against teams with a proper threat on the break and top top wingers when that ball breaks loose in midfield they could find themselves in trouble because Kimmich has sort of gone drifting and then ahead of him you've got Leroy Sané who I think tried a lot against Curacao not much of it came off he worked hard, he got back when he had to but not much of it came off and he looks like the player that's sort of most going to struggle for form in that sort of Germany front four front five with within Metzger and and with Brown if you include him as well and I wonder I guess about him and by extension like a little bit about Germany because there's just that position there is not much competition Maximilian Bayer I was a bit surprised to be honest though that Sané played that Bayer didn't get off the bench he's had a really good season for Dortmund uh Jamie Levelling from from Stuttgart's the other one but there's just not there are a couple of options like young options that Nagelsmann just didn't call up and now we've got you know a Germany team that's probably going to end up playing Leroy Sané pretty much every game in that position and he sort of was in and out of the Galatasaray team over the course of the season so yeah just that he's Gala's guy and even then just
28:37Michael Timbs:comes off the bench the the games I saw him play he wasn't starting he would just come off the bench yeah I think it was against um is it they got knocked out the Champions League by Liverpool
28:48Lewis Ambrose:and he was on the bench for both games and I found that a bit strange and then you know I think in the league he was it was again it was like sort of he'd play one week and not play the next week and even was it you think he'd be like a star man there yeah you'd think he'd be a star man at Galatasaray and he's not but you get to the World Cup and he's still starting for Germany and I worry a little bit about Germany with that sort of combination down the right.
29:15Michael Timbs:Okay nice yeah that is valid, valid, valid stocks falling.
29:18Lewis Ambrose:Yeah they've scored seven goals and I've picked out one of their attacking players as the problem.
29:23Michael Timbs:No but maybe in this analogy it's not so much a stock falling as a stock that's not been there for a long time if it's the right wing. Yeah maybe it's something like that.
29:32Lewis Ambrose:Right oh I I will go with Ecuador's attack,
29:39Michael Timbs:but more specifically, and a Valencia, just because you can't, you just need to, especially the way the World Cup format is now, like just if you can get one win, it just does such big things for your chances of going through. And not to say it was all his fault, but they're going to look back at how many chances they missed against Ivory Coast, who are like you know they're they're fine but they they didn't really put too much up against them and uh probably going to rue their chances there um especially when goal difference makes a bigger difference this world cup than i think it has in any other one for if they are going to if you finish third place like it's yeah yeah it's basically another point and uh yeah it was not a not an impressive performance and doesn't bode too well but maybe on another day maybe those ones that hit the post two well two hit the crossbar one or two hit the post like maybe they go in and another day and they're laughing their way to a 4-1 win so who knows but just yeah for
30:44Lewis Ambrose:me anyway that wasn't that wasn't great so yeah yeah like you say the sort of the the attack generally the fact that they're relying on 36 year old enna valencia is not a great sign probably
30:58Michael Timbs:for their like hope of scoring multiple goals in games but i did weirdly i totally agree but there is there is a part of me that what when whenever a world cup does come around you do have these international teams where it's like oh my god i can't believe they're still playing him and he's
31:15Lewis Ambrose:like the guy guys that just you've not thought about for years yeah yeah and then you just like
31:21Michael Timbs:For example, I don't know, it would be like if Costa Rica were playing and Joel Campbell just popped those up. Where's that come from?
31:32Lewis Ambrose:That's actually, Switzerland didn't play, obviously, this day, like they played the day before. But that's a stock falling for this World Cup generally, is I don't know how I feel about every two years, I turn the TV on in the summer or the winter in Qatar and Jordan Shaqiri pops one in from 30 yards. And I don't know what's going to replace that in my life this summer. Who is the new? We need a new Jordan Shaqiri that I just don't think about for a couple of years. It's an international tournament and he looks like the best player on the planet.
32:04Michael Timbs:Yeah. Yeah. I remember. Was that the previous World Cup or was that the Euros? I think he had a great 2021 Euros when England were hosting. I think I remember them providing a few upsets and him just being the guy. It was great.
32:20Lewis Ambrose:It just felt like every two years for the last decade or a bit more, Jerdan Shaqiri just pops up in the summer and finds the top corner from 25 yards. I don't know what's going to replace that in my life at this World Cup. Somebody is there. Someone has to step up. Please.
32:40Michael Timbs:Well, Granit Xhaka will probably play the next World Cup. And then you're going, right, he's old enough now to be like that person. uh i will say a final stock's falling for me personally again off the pitch and and it has a redemptive element to it is the fact that the a lot of the post-match press conferences they're not allowing players to speak in spanish because unless it is your native language the the basically the journalists that are in the room have to either ask questions in the player's native language or the of the country that are playing or english and so uh hakimi and vinnie junior were both in press conferences and were asked questions in spanish by probably the countless spanish journalists who were there spanish speaking journalists but maybe from mexico or anywhere in south america apart from brazil and asked questions in in spanish and they were starting to respond in Spanish and they were told no by a representative saying no there's no there's no Spanish translation person here it has to be your native language or English which I thought was a bit odd seeing as the the World Cup is hosted in Mexico and massive parts of the US are Spanish speaking so I thought that was weird but I also did enjoy the response from Vinny Jr and Hakimi being like it's fine i'm just gonna answer it um that's bizarre that's very weird if a player can
34:14Lewis Ambrose:speak a language and you ask them a question in that language why why shouldn't they be allowed
34:19Michael Timbs:to just answer in that language yeah weird and and uh vinnie jr's been a bit in he's been in the limelight obviously because of the football but also another one uh more footage came out of him refusing to do the halftime interview right yeah yeah I saw that one and I'm not again like part of me thinks it's kind of cool he's like I'll take the fine we don't want to do it and I think I don't mind that just because I as a viewer don't want to I don't like having the Premier League halftime interviews I just I don't you don't glean anything from it and I just think just let the players do what they want just they're gonna go back they're tired just leave them uh so he's uh not like vinnie jr but he's he's taken quite a lot of their headlines recently um for both his ability on the pitch and uh what he does off it so uh i wouldn't say that's that that's been a stocks falling that has now changed into something totally different but uh yeah that
35:25Lewis Ambrose:was my no i yeah i i didn't this this language thing doesn't make any sense to me definitely like i if the player can speak the language and they're happy to answer the question just let them answer the question like the journalists have got their press passes to be in the room and then you dictate in what language they can or can't like communicate with the players in i don't
35:44Michael Timbs:get it right you're spanish you don't speak a word of english good luck well like hakimi like the
35:50Lewis Ambrose:example of hakimi is like he grew up in spain like he was born he was born in spain like yeah
35:55Michael Timbs:why if you can ask him a question in spanish like sure like why not he's he's fluent in spanish and then vinnie who obviously speaks portuguese as a native language but lives in spain yeah yeah just let him let him do it you know it's it's very odd uh right are there any other stocks falling if not we can uh briefly chat about what's going on today i don't i don't think so i think i i found like
36:22Lewis Ambrose:personally anyway i found yesterday certainly on the pitch uh yeah difficult one to find to find sort of stock falling i did see a german journalist ask a woman from curacao uh why do you think you lost that game so stock falling for that question it's a ridiculous question to ask the answer was perfect the woman replied uh lost we won we scored against germany it was like yeah so good for her appropriate response yeah good for her um and and a stock falling for just a really really stupid
36:56Michael Timbs:question yeah yeah i totally agree with that um right we have going on today spain against uh capo verde so the the we finally get to see the the favorites uh playing we have saudi arabia against Uruguay, which could be an interesting one, to be honest. Belgium, Egypt as well. How does Beelzebul survive in the heat? Yeah, they are going to need the drinks break. We've also got Belgium against Egypt, which obviously is the King Mo Salah, possibly his final World Cup. And then even the kind of last iterations of the Belgium golden generation with yeah Leo probably plays another one but De Bruyne for example that is coming to an end so God knows what's going to happen there and then I think those are the only games today oh no we have also Iran against New Zealand which is one of those World Cup games where you're like I don't know what's going to happen there I just want to watch it
38:02Lewis Ambrose:I imagine there's going to be some wild celebrations of Iran get a good result. Yeah. You know, so that'll be like an interesting element. You mentioned there about like Salah, it's probably his last World Cup and he's still not got a club for next season as well. So this could be, it could be an interesting, this could kind of... Who'd you play for? Egypt. Right, but like this could determine like what kind of offers he gets. Like if he has a bad World Cup, that's it. And if he has a good World Cup, he might get offers from sort of like Champions League teams. I don't know. like it's interesting very true I have no idea where he might be like two or three months from now to start the season uh but I do feel like a good world cup and then you can quite easily imagine like a like you know one of the top teams in Italy or something like that or an I don't know Barcelona needs someone on deadline day and they offer him a deal or something like I wouldn't rule out anything like that so he's sort of possibly not just playing for Egypt and the pride and honour of playing at a World Cup, but possibly for his sort of future in European football, I guess.
39:11Michael Timbs:Yeah, weird to think that that's usually reserved for the hidden gems to announce themselves to the world stage and now Mo Salah's actually doing it, bookending his career by doing the same thing. Inter, are you watching?
39:23Lewis Ambrose:Please, I swear I'm still good.
39:26Michael Timbs:Right, amazing stuff. Well, guys, I think that'll be all for today. Lots of football to look forward to.
