In short

World Cup Daily match review and preview—Leo leaving Arsenal; Morocco beat Canada 3-0 and become the first host nation to crash out; France beat Paraguay 1-0 in a highly physical, poorly officiated match; England’s upcoming test in Mexico City altitude; Brazil’s match and Martinelli’s rumored role.

Guests/backgrounds

Tim “Timsy” (wearing a Three Lions kit) joins Elliot Smith. Both are Arsenal-focused commentators; they discuss Arsenal transfers and match analysis.

Key claims

Paraguay’s tactics were “dark arts”/violence rather than football, and the referee failed to control it (no Paraguay yellow cards despite fouls). Morocco dominated early chances, then Morocco’s quality decided it after scoring in the 50th minute. Journalists running Strava around the Azteca is mocked as unhelpful altitude coverage.

Notable examples

Mbappé cool penalty after Paraguay’s aggression; Unahi scoring for Morocco (outside-box finish) and sealing goal in the 82nd; Canada’s first-half XG 0.39 vs 0.02; Paraguay 13 fouls with zero yellows.

0:25Look, not everybody likes the same things, but I hope you were as moved as I was by Paraguay's touching tribute to Tony Pulis' Stoke. This is the World Cup Daily. My name's Elliot Smith, the Black Manist, and Gunner, hello everybody. Tony Pulis, wherever he was, is grinning that shit-eating grin because he saw a performance that he would recognize out of the Paraguay team that aped his Stoke team and seemed more interested in seeing if they could get France to lose their rag than lose the game. But that's okay. We're going to talk about it. We are going to talk about the Morocco-Canada game as the first of the three host nations crashes out.

0:58We're of course going to spend some time telling you about Why England can't possibly compete Because the Azteca's altitude is roughly the same As the highest peak of the moon And then we will be done with you for today And here with me now is a man wearing a Three Lions kit So you know he is incapable of an unbiased analysis of this game But don't worry, I got you covered Hello, Timsy It's the very biased Timsy, hello I'm excited Yeah, it's a big day, it is a big day the day to avenge the hand of god there was a great uh no that's overstating it there was a video going around of two americans being interviewed by talk sport okay and they were saying the england lineup and they were saying the u.s lineup and saying which player is better and predictably what do you think they were doing with each player what do you think they were they

1:49Michael Timbs:were they were they were 70 of the time going with they were 100 of the time going with the american except but then pulisic is captain america except for deck on race who they picked well so it was made of the uh maybe alcantara saying look that in my dream midfield three of current players deckland rice will be in it and you go i always liked that tiago i always liked him yeah so so maybe there's some ball knowers in this country after all and yeah i saw that video yeah welcome to the ball knowers club it picked the arsenal boy i'm fine with that Okay. We should probably just say a quick word.

2:24I did a transfer daily emergency episode yesterday talking about Leo Trussard. If you want to hear that, you can. It's over on Patreon. It's the Libra50s code. You can do it for about a couple of quid. And we got scouting videos this week coming up with Clive. And we did Friday Night Clive on Friday. And by the way, Friday Night Clive on Friday was a banger. It was really, really good. We went through whether it's time to panic. Should Berta have been sacked last week or is this week okay? Should we be Mikel out? like we've missed out on all the good signings and why we have no chance of competing for even top four let alone the title next season so check that out Clive was in his uh best form on Friday night Clive on Friday but I did want to give you a quick word on Leo Troussard going not so much on whether you think the fee is good as 20 million you know Besiktas I thought he might stay in a bit of a bigger top five league or even the premier league but he leaves a if not a legend a cult hero legend a Freddy Yunberg style legend for me and I'm curious where you have him yeah

3:17Michael Timbs:I think he will leave with that sort of legacy. I think Freddie is probably a bigger legend, obviously, because he was here for, I think, a longer time and one more. But I think for how much we needed that win and what Leo contributed to us kind of steadily getting better, him always being there and always being a reliable-ish figure, apart from his weird periods of kind of being, you know, him and Martinelli going in and out of form and being like, you literally can't do anything right, get out of this club. Apart from those brief periods, he's been a great servant. And I think, yeah, he deserved to go out on a high.

3:57Michael Timbs:I think there's a few of those players in our team, like the kind of Ben Whites and that sort of thing, where you can tell, like, there's always been rumors of are they going to stay? Do we want to renew them? and it's like they know they aren't the absolute top dogs of the side and that you you want to see them fulfill their journey with the club and so i think he's done exactly that he i guess deserves the right move for him maybe if he wanted he needed a change of scenery or something um but yeah the fear side like fees kind of whatever he's 31 and uh they're getting a great player for 20 million uh and for us as well we've had someone who's been able to contribute and especially last season he obviously scored some really important goals and and i think is kind of was an underrated motivator of the team like he he he really showed a lot of behind those beautiful sunken eyes was a lot of uh passion and actually a lot of grit as well um he was always a player that I think in those moments was consistent enough to provide some much-needed end product in our side that promised so much.

5:11Michael Timbs:So nothing but good things to say on the whole about Leo and obviously best of luck to him. And he will always be, as you say, that kind of cult legend figure and deservedly so. And also I can tell anyone listening, I've been lucky enough to interview him a few times, chat to him and know him well enough that he is a genuinely like really really nice guy as well he's got a very wry sense of humor yeah which i think is why he fit in with the english lot do you think that comes from also refereeing at the same time like it's been fun to watch him referee at the world cup and play it's incredible how he's been able to do the two to be honest um yep so yeah remarkable but he uh yeah he he maybe keeps the humor and that sort of side away from it when he's when he's refereeing a game yeah and look i i realize that the the final goal of our season was scored by kai havertz i was there to see it and and it was wonderful but leo scored what feels like the deciding goal of the title winning season and he you know i think it's easy to forget because he had the mid-season dip yeah but the standard post-contract renewal dip that well well but but actually I would slightly disagree with that only in the sense that he came out of the blocks hot he had a great start to the season if you remember we were thinking well well Eze will probably play left and and you know it'll be our normal midfield Odegaard gets injured Eze plays midfield and Leo got off to a flyer he was playing great he was keeping Martinelli out of the side talks of Eze moving left were kind of stalled because Leo was playing so well and I think his start to the season helped us integrate new pieces helped us get past injuries and then obviously his goal against West Ham really feels like a title decider in many ways.

6:53He was a huge part of this era.

6:55Michael Timbs:Oh, he was. And even beyond this season as well, I think there are countless occasions where he scored so many important goals, like against Brighton, his old club, and obviously the West Ham goal, the one at Sunderland was it. Just so many important goals where it comes from him as well being like sort of a so technically sound and in the moments where we kind of sometimes overplay it or hesitate to score we think of like Odegaard getting into positions and be like why why didn't you just shoot and he was a relatively no-nonsense version of that where like you're technically complete and you just if you see a goal scoring opportunity you actually take it um which which is really nice and was sort of a breath a breath of fresh air for for for the kind of different sides that we had over the last three four years so um yeah man I I love him and and I think even that West Ham goal will obviously live long in the memory for for everyone so he's written his name into kind of Arsenal history and that typified even just like his celebration how much he screamed and just how much it obviously meant to him and the whole side but him especially where he went as berserk as I've seen him in in celebration and you could just tell like in for him like yes like I've finally I've I've I've done something that is so meaningful and could be so important in the title race and obviously it was um so just to see see that all come together um I think yeah he's he's he's been a great a great player for us I'm obviously sad to see him go because I think even going into next season like he would he would be an important squad player but I think everyone knows like realistically going into next year we would need like a we want a new left winger presence that is a starter and gives us that extra bit of quality of of pace of of threat of of goal scoring and of assisting as well but he unfortunately a player of his quality I think is in that bracket of he's too good to be just a squad player, but also maybe not quite elite enough to really sustain and hold down that left wing position for more than a season.

9:11Yeah, but the kind of player that every title winning successful team has, you know, I think of Alex Ferguson always had players like that, you know, in his team and players that could play a couple different positions that gave you a consistent baseline. I actually, and I'll talk about this more in the main pod, I don't know that I would have sold him and I'll explain why I get the reasons for selling him. We created a director of football website where you can role play as director of football and pick who we buy and who we sell and see what you come up with and then see what other people did.

9:41It's DOF2026.arsenalvisionpodcast.com and you go and you do it. 58 % of people so far have sold Leo. We did set his price at 20 million, so we nailed that right on the head. um but yeah 58 have sold them and i think it shows you that with one year on his contract at 31 years old and only 58 of people selling him just what he means but probably best stupid business is it it's not no no it it is totally understandable to make that move yeah i won't get into it now i did provided we now go on and it's the shaka problem right how do you create continuity to the next sort of evolution of what we're going to be and if we sell both of our left-sided attackers and rebuild that entire side you do want to make sure you keep your floor high and i feel like leo trussard is a classic example of a player who if you put him out there you know most of the time you're going to get a competent performance that gives you a chance to go compete at a high level and that you shouldn't underestimate how important that predictability is but there'll be time to to to talk about that throughout the summer and in the next season and look i mean once we buy vinnie and barkala there probably wouldn't have been minutes for him so i you know yeah i wish him okay rafael leo as well well leo yeah leo could be the the leo role with barkla and vinnie you know sharing time in in the more first choice role yeah yeah and and you know maybe vinnie

10:56Michael Timbs:or barkla could play off the right sometimes the men up top and yes it'll be great yeah i mean i if croupy's not starting that day sure okay yeah this is fun we can do this all we could literally do this keep going uh all right your headline from yesterday uh let me just reiterate morocco get past Canada 3-0 the hosts are out and then France 1-0 in a game that I'm sure we have a lot to say over Paraguay 1-0 so what's your headline my headline because this is a World Cup show believe it or not everyone so my headline will be bring back normal refereeing man what was going on in that France Paraguay game I haven't seen I haven't seen the like in a long time genuinely though where we know paraguay were as we like to say in football shithouses but that was it was just like all you needed was it was it was a normal level of strictness of refereeing and there just wasn't it was like it was leniency to the point of just incoherence having yeah as in you you you've totally lost control of the game because you've allowed this paraguay side who have made obviously they've made their name they beat germany off of being very difficult to beat making it difficult making it into uh just a as much of a fight as as it is a football game but as soon as you let the first two three four assaults go and you don't give a yellow card then they're just going to keep doing it and there were a few occasions where i mean like half the team should have really been on yellows there were elbows and just semi kind of punches uh nasty tackles and just even just every time they gave the ball away or like that someone passed it away just as as as they got up to them and couldn't tackle them in time they just ended up pushing them or you know it kind of it made in my eyes it made no sense it made perfect sense with the referee but with a normal referee it would have made absolutely zero sense and i get that you have your game plan it's worked for you before you've knocked out a kind of traditional giant so i get that you want to build on that and use that to your advantage but equally to that point like you watch it and you're not going to get any fans doing that like i know it's all about the result and it gives them the best chance of maybe getting a result and fair play they kept france to one goal but you ain't going to win a game like that to be honest against that france side like do we want to say fair play because i i'm not i'm not feeling that gracious about it I say fair play in terms of not, it's the least fair play going, of course, but fair play in terms of if that's your, if that's your way of trying to win a football game and it's worked for you before, fair play in terms of I don't blame you for trying to do that.

13:46Michael Timbs:but it's it's it's dumb and i don't like it because it's it's quite literally not football like what what what are you doing what are you trying to outside of just winning the game somehow without creating much what are you trying to achieve and i think on another day with a proper referee uh that they would have been beaten by four or five because they would have been down to about eight men so uh yeah that's that's my headline somehow i i i gotta tell you like well i'll just give you my headline because it gives us another way into this game and my headline is a game that made me appreciate cabo verde even more cabo verde i saw i saw your tweet yeah perfectly right cabo verde we're not favored against argentina of course but cabo verde said we're going to play the best football we can play and then the winner is going to be the winner and I don't mean dumb football I don't mean go hell for leather and get beat 10-0 I mean we're going to be compact we're going to defend in an organized manner we're going to find opportunities to counter and what they delivered was not only one of the most fun times I've had watching football in a stunning game and yeah maybe a couple lucky goals and on another day they don't get but it becomes this incredible classic and they go out with the the pride of a performance the the the pride of their nation the world thanking them for for the display they produced and i'm not going to sit here and pretend that paraguay had a chance to to beat france in a footballing contest but there are ways you can set up to try to play the match and play a football game that says we're going to lean into things we do well and and i appreciate cabo verde doing that against argentina Paraguay did not do that and the dark arts thing right it's funny because someone said oh you know you're mad at this but this is what people think Arsenal do first of all let me just address that out of hand Arsenal have 60 65 percent of the ball all the field tilt we attack yes we use set pieces and yes we can physically bully teams but we are the protagonist we're trying to win games and we're out there trying to to defeat teams that are in a low block so that's just dumb but my point is I think Arsenal fans under Arsene Wenger in the Emirates here under Arsene Wenger got a little too precious and even some Arsenal fans now have gotten too precious about teams just play low blocks against us.

16:07I mean, Slott complained about it all season. It sounds like whining. You're allowed to play a low block. Paraguay didn't play a low block. Paraguay were violent. They wanted to provoke a fight. They went down when they hadn't been hurt. They used every time-wasting tactic and I can almost accept that But the viciousness with which they approached this game was so clear an indication that they felt themselves footballing inferiors. And like, this has to be something that a referee has to control. I'm totally with you. I was going to have the referee as a stock falling, but we're doing it now, so I guess I could skip it.

16:45But like, if you do not control that game, this is what you get.

16:49Michael Timbs:Yeah, yeah, he's been delisted. Yeah, it's been found to have gone down to 0.00, and unfortunately, we've dissolved you as an entity. Yeah, and by the way, like 100-degree temperatures or whatever, 35, 36, whatever, it was not a great condition to have to play football. I get it. And so I'm not asking players to sprint around and give us a classic. I'm not complaining that they didn't deliver entertainment. They just did not attempt to find a footballing solution for that match. Well, there's obviously, and you're exactly right, like there is a there is a way of doing it right is that you still need to play a game of football and you have to find the way that works for you within the remit of playing football there was almost like from the very first minute you could tell that there was no attempt from them to like find a way of of trying to beat these guys in a football match that didn't involve just hurting them and and just nothing to do with on the ball stuff nothing like maybe we'll try a low block and hit them on the break or maybe we press them really high up or whatever their kind of tactics were there was zero tactics it was fighting so like i yeah i don't understand like as you as you say cape verde showed showed the way of look we know we're technically inferior we know we're right up against it but we're going to do what we think is best in terms of playing football the way we can to mitigate their strengths and to give us the best chance they skipped that part and went straight to who's got the weakest chin uh and you know and you know what as well my i guess stock rising for this as well is france show that they they can mix it with the the the the non-footballing um yeah uh violent ones where they're so good on the ball and obviously there were some nice passages of play they could and should have probably scored two or three anyway um but it was the fact that they weren't really intimidated like there were a few times when they actually did get like hurt and so they're kind of rolling around on the floor because probably trying to goad the referee into be giving an appropriate yellow card um unfortunately that didn't work but uh they they at least stuck it out and and i think was it mbappe said in his in a post-match interview just saying like look if they want to if they want to try mess us up in in kind of more unpleasant words than than we can do the same and it is similar to the way I guess we do it where you're right if what people tarnish us with this idea that like they're terrible at football they just bully teams it's like no we've proven over the last three four years that we're really good at football and better at football than pretty much every side that we play in the premier league anyway but that means that suddenly now they're going to change tactics against us they're going to maybe try and bully us a little bit they may be going to employ a low block so we need to navigate that and find our own way of of beating that but there was there was no such attempt um by paraguay and france just just matched them for it so yeah but but legally so they didn't just end up punching them as well but they were like look they're not going to rise to it that much i think mbappe did a really good job of just laughing it off when he could um and then rightly getting the penalty which was obviously a stonewall pen and even just like the kicking kicking the the the penalty spot trying to scuff the penalty spot you saw that coming it's like it's it's one is that it's one of the oldest tricks in the books Two, book him What are you doing?

20:29Michael Timbs:You'll be happy to know, actually That we're whining for nothing Because, and I think this is important Paraguay received no yellow cards in this game Not one, not a single yellow card They committed just 13 fouls, Timsy And I mean, like, no yellow card for the penalty Which was a clear foul, there were tons of clear fouls At one point, someone hit Mbappe's arm I think, just like punched his arm There was a kick out Elbowed a Pumacano. There was a kick-out. A proper David Beckham-esque kick-out. But there's the thing. All three of those, for example, and this is where it stumps me a little bit with the refereeing.

21:06Michael Timbs:If that goes to VAR, one, why didn't it go to VAR? Two, if it did, just give a red card because that is just assault. Can I say one thing about that too, Tim? Because I have always been of the opinion that refs erring on the side of not giving penalties in red cards is better than being too free. But there are certain games where if the ref doesn't get hold of it, you get this. And I think the problem is once players see, oh, we've got this kind of referee, you create a permissiveness and that's why the game breaks down. And also, and the thing is, just on that topic as well, I like the fact that this World Cup, there's been an era of like, we're trying to play on and keep it as free-flowing as possible, where a lot of the fouls that we see in the Premier League and the Champions League especially, for example, are a player barely gets touched or forces a contact, falls on the floor, rolls around, gets the foul.

22:04Michael Timbs:We're unfortunately so used to that now in the Premier League. But here we've seen throughout the tournament, to be fair, any of those sorts of things, the ref's just gone, no, boom, and play on. And players have started to catch on to it, which is good. because now it's almost like the refs are just laughing at them and they're like get up and then as soon as they know they're not going to get it they get up there's no there's no oh my god i'm going to stay on the floor and make sure i'll waste some time whatever it's like players are now kind of more getting on with it than they were at the very beginning of the tournament but that is like that can't excuse just because there's this thing of like well we want to keep the game going as much as possible that they're they're beyond clear fouls they're just yeah they're not even playing the game like you got a you got a blow for that so yeah we could talk about this all day about no i could terrible refereeing and like being it's a shame too because there are things paraguay did to neutralize france like get two guys around all these days so we couldn't find the pockets of space so we couldn't there there was tactical there was tactical quality and defensive quality and by the way when we come to stock rising you'll be stunned i'm going to give someone from this game of stock rising but like yeah the the ref so so look i'm not going to blame the ref just for paraguay i'm blaming paraguay as well i think uh galarza and casaris were particularly responsible but i did say there was one moment i have to say that i enjoyed when almiron tried to sprint saliva saliva comfortably outpaced him recovered the ball and almiron's hamstring went yeah yeah all right uh you owe me i guess let's let's grab a quick headline from the other game.

23:39Michael Timbs:You want to do that? Yeah. Tara, Canada. It was fun, but quality shone through. Morocco rode the wave, I guess, of the first 15 minutes of the game in the first half where Canada, to be fair, were hot out the blocks and created some good chances. But as the game went on, the quality was very, very clear. Like Canada, they've done well. They've done well to get this far. They've done their country proud. There's no shame in going out to Morocco, who are a genuinely very, very good side. But to be honest, there was no contest there, especially in the second half. Yeah. And I'll just say, so Jesse Marsh, for those who haven't seen, came out and said, we were the better team.

24:26A little bit of a Mikel Arteta post-PSG kind of move there. And when you've lost 3-0, I think there is a line in the sand. But to be fair, and by the way, the Morocco fans didn't take it.

24:37Michael Timbs:It's not crazy. It's understandable. In the first half, Canada were the better team. Yes. Just to put in perspective, 0.39 XG to 0.02. Morocco had one shot in the first half from massive distance and one touch in the opposition box. Canada had 13 touches in the opposition box. The press was working. They were all over them. And I do think they should have taken a lead in that first half. Now, having said that, I think in the second half, Morocco's quality, to your point, shone through. They were more in the game. And even though Canada still had the lion's share of possession, the lion's share of the touches in the opposition box, Morocco created clear chances on the counter after they took their lead in the 50th minute.

25:21So, you know, you think about it, you take a lead in the 50th minute and game state then kind of dictates what's happening. I don't think Canada had an answer after that. And look, we know this as Arsenal fans. You can play the best football. The hardest thing in football is putting the ball in the net. And if you don't put the ball in the net when you have your period of dominance, you tend not to win the game. And so I think it is fair of Marsh to say if he wants to, like, we dominated the first half and threw away our chance to take the lead. That is correct. I think it is not correct to say they were the better team.

25:50The better team won that game.

25:51Michael Timbs:Yeah, but I feel a little bit sorry with the outroar that's come, the uproar, sorry, that has come from Jesse Marsh saying that. because I think he knows that they're not the better side. And I think deep down he knows it's like overall they deserve to win. They're a better side. But I think you can, I personally anyway, can understand why he said that because for him to see that first half and see how unfortunately wasteful they were. Yeah. And then go like, it was, I think it's more, it's like a more hyperbolic way of saying is like, we had them. Like we had them. We could have done it today.

26:30Michael Timbs:um and even him saying you know i'd rather be us i wouldn't be them it's like yeah but again same thing i totally understand it it's not this crazy thing of i would never you never choose them over us like it's just more him he's obviously very proud of his side maybe rearing some missed chances and he just wants to give them a little bit of a um a tap on the shoulder and um a tap on the back sorry for just as a way of giving them a little pickup because it's also very jesse marsh Like that's just very Jesse Marsh. You know what I mean? Like some people are that way. And I think the problem for Canada, of course, had they topped their group, they would have stayed in Canada and had home pitch advantage.

27:10Right. But instead, they're playing in a place where there were more Morocco fans and Canadian fans, I think, when push comes to shove. And, you know, given where they are in the footballing world, I think they needed that extra little push. I was so impressed with how they played in the first half. And I think Marsh could have done himself a power good if he had said, for example, in the first half, I thought we were the much better side. we squandered chances and against a team as good as Morocco if you squander chances going to come back to bite you which happened to us that is a fair read I think he just went the extra he went the extra marsh he went full marsh never go full marsh and and said we were the better side than that we we needed marsh light and we got we got full-blooded marsh full marsh yeah um I I will say I mean obviously for Morocco they come they're going to come up against France a huge huge loss for those who did not see this game Saibari pulled up lame in the what was it like the 22nd minute i guess and that's going to be a big problem for them because he's not going to be back he knows his world cup is over was it a hamstring i think we saw the hamstring one and uh yeah not not good losing saibari who had been so good for them uh let's hit the stocks real quick here uh you got a stock rising for me um stock rising i'll go i'll go who would i go for

28:25Michael Timbs:i will go for mbappe because i don't know how many stock risings he's who who who uh this guy called killian killian yeah yeah football hipsters no i'm sure carry on sorry he's got some he's popular with the kids because he's got a popular um a celebration no not that one he's got the one where he does that Yeah, yeah, yeah. And actually they made a character out of him in a cartoon show, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle thing. I think he's now on, is it 11 goals in knockout stages of World Cups, which is kind of ridiculous. I mean, if you play for France, you should be on that many. Sure, sure.

29:02Michael Timbs:Yeah, him, Killian, just because I think it's easy for, it would have been easy for him to rise to the beef. and I think that's exactly what Paraguay wanted and were trying to get out of France they were just trying to get a reaction to take them out of their rhythm and to to take them out of their comfort zone and they did France in general but especially Killian did a really good job of just ignoring it and but barring a few like actual salts where they kind of were on the floor I think did a really good job of laughing it off and it was a well-taken penalty I was really really hopeful I genuinely really wanted him to score it because it's like they don't deserve this the World Cup doesn't deserve you missing because they've scuffed the spot and they've been they've been trying to bully you the whole game it's like football deserves you to score this and he put it away well and again his and even then sometimes I think his celebrations can be obviously the tiniest bit disrespectful of like taking the mick out of either defenders or goalkeepers because of them trying to goad him into staff or fouling him but this one even just slotting the pen and then just pointing away at the goalkeeper and just going, what was he doing?

30:14Michael Timbs:I'm going, yeah, yeah, they deserve that. So yeah, he would be my stock rising just because, yeah, he kept a cool head when all these jokes about Kylian, the dictator, and him being a bit of a tyrant in the team and not being the nicest teammate. I think it's quite nice for the France team to look to him as the guy and the goal scorer and go well he's not reacting he's he's got his head just like screwed on focused and uh i think he he led by example there yep yeah it's it's a great choice uh i will give you my stock rising and my stock rising is the saley mvp of the day you knew it was coming and it is here just like you when you are here wherever here is it could be anywhere in the world and when you are here or when you were there, when you were there, instead of here, you need your phone to work there because your phone works here.

31:07But how do you get your phone to work there? Well, the way your phone works there is with the sale app, you put the app on your phone, and you pick the area you want to be in. And now you have a data plan in that area, you know, you don't need when you're there, you don't need a little screwdriver that pushes a little button on the side of your phone, and the thing pops out and the thing falls on the ground, and you never find it again. And now you're$1 ,600 phone or six 1200 pound or your money's worth more than our money. Like the phone doesn't have to be replaced because you pop the thing out then you put a sim in and the sim is actually not a real sim so it rooted your phone and it took all your credit card information and now you're in a prison in a country you don't live in because it accused you of a crime you didn't commit and now you have to hire a special forces team of private investigators to free you from this from this crime that you didn't commit meanwhile you're you don't have a phone because your phone's been destroyed by the sim card you used and if you had the phone it still wouldn't be very good to use anyway because it would be missing that piece that you popped out because Why?

31:57Because you didn't listen to this ad and get the Saley app. That's why all that happened. So stay out of prison, save the money on the private investigators, save the money on the new phone, get the Saley app. You can browse where you are. You get ad blockers so it doesn't consume your data plan with ads. And, and you will be free of the hassle of having to worry about how to use your phone when you travel internationally. So Saley app, code Arsenal Vision, 15 % off. That is 0.15 or 15 % or 15 over 100 % off of your plan. Saley is the app. Arsenal Vision is the code. Do it now. You ready for my stock rising, Timsy?

32:36Yes.

32:37Michael Timbs:We went on a journey there together, didn't we? That was, I'm convinced. If I wasn't already a customer, I'd be even more convinced. Well, because you don't want to go through that ordeal. Okay. Not again. No. I can only go through that once. Okay. My stock rising is Azzedine Uwani. Unahi, sorry. Yeah, Unahi. Sorry. Two goals for Morocco. Got them off to a flyer in the 50th. Made the game safe in the 82nd. The first goal is a lovely lash finish from outside the box when, you know, Canada had been on top the whole first half and you're starting to think Morocco are fading here. Are they not up for it?

33:17They needed something. He scores really from nothing. I mean, it's an outside-of-the-box shot, rasping low into the corner, and totally changes the game. Now Canada start to chase it. Now there start to be some opportunities to open up space, and Unai makes it safe in the 82nd minute. Another great finish, and I thought about going with Brahim Diaz, who had two assists. He was excellent, too. Pulled the strings. Really, really good player, by the way. But yeah, in the face of Saibari not being there, there was a little bit of that question of where the goal's going to come from. He stepped up, he provided them, and he is my stock rising.

33:50So do you have another stock rising you want to pick or should we move to the stock falling?

33:57Michael Timbs:I don't know. I think we've covered enough people who deserve praise from the two games. Yeah, fire away on your stock falling. Stock falling. I will go with, and it's to do with the game that is going to be this evening. I know I might be jumping ahead a little bit, but I feel I need to get this off my chest. It is reporters using Strava now as a way of covering matches journalistically. I don't like it. I love this. I love where you're going with this. Talk me through this because this is the meta stuff that we're here for. And I have a tweet and a social media post that I made about this very topic.

34:37So carry on.

34:37Michael Timbs:So for anyone who has not learned, I mean, you would have if anyone has been listening to the news or been on Twitter for more than 10 minutes has seen, we all know about the altitude problem that the England team may face for this game in Mexico City against Mexico. Sure, it is a real thing. We don't know how big a thing it is, but of course it is a real thing. The England players aren't used to playing 7 ,000 feet above sea level, sure. But now a lot of journalists have taken it upon themselves, who by the way i doubt run that much anyway and they've now they now think it's their duty to run a 5k around the azteca or in and around mexico city to to demonstrate uh just how how different it is and how difficult it is to breathe when you're running um i appreciate the effort i i just don't think it's it's quite the right thing that we're looking for in terms of coverage one we don't care two what what is your vo2 max what what is your best 5k time how does it compare and i don't know if i should take a a journalist's fitness level um and the response to a lack of oxygen and compare that to elite level footballers who have been playing football since they were two saying this there is a chance if England get whipped 5-0 and half of them faint you know by the second hydration break I'll hold my hands up and go yo this altitude thing is no joke however if if that doesn't happen all of those journalists who've done that should hang their head in shame delete their Strava, save their money, and also go back to journalism school, please.

36:29Michael Timbs:Sorry, rant over. Journalists, stop putting Strava on your official tweets or even articles.

36:39Michael Timbs:You're on mute. You're on mute. That is a professional effort by me. Thank you. We call that the pause. Okay, so I'm just going to call it out. So Miguel Delaney put an article up about running around the Azteca and what it's like and whether it will affect the players and why it will affect the players so miguel delaney no i got so my initial reaction was miguel is going to get a lot of hate because that's just how twitter works and people are going to be miserable to him and i was like i feel bad for him because i know what he's walking into but if you know anything about miguel delaney miguel will front up to all the hate on on social media he he was famous for uh essentially saying on twitter that he's never been wrong and this guy john was like you've been wrong before and he's like, show me where I've been wrong before Dave.

37:26And someone goes, well, his name's John for starters. So there's one, you know, it says, or Dave, you know, something like that. Okay. Very classic. But so I was like feeling bad for, for Miguel Delaney. And then I started reading his replies to people being like reasonably politely pointing out like politely, Hey, you know, you're not a professional athlete. And so it's a bit different. And he starts writing things like, quote, how does fitness level affect the pressure in the air, which means less oxygen gets to your blood vessels where oxygen actually has to get to the blood vessels first this isn't about your body it's about the air and that's where all of my sort of sympathy for him ran out as i was like you're just really outside of your depth here man yeah you're you're neither a professional

38:05Michael Timbs:athlete nor a doctor nor a scientist no or a doctor no i mean vo2 max is a thing like bodies process oxygen differently some people are affected by oxygen some people aren't like i i don't know So it prompted me to write the following quote. Yes. Just ran 23 kilometers around the Azteca, also scaled the outside of the ground and once inside easily disarmed and neutralized the security personnel, then did 50 reps up and down the stairs of the upper tier. Overall feeling good. Altitude, not an issue. Think England will be fine. So there you go. That's my report. But I do like your meta stock falling there.

38:37Michael Timbs:No. Yeah. I also. Yeah. For him as well. I know he's kind of semi-joking but I also really appreciated people piling in and even the the slightly more um runner focused fans who obviously have run and know the kind of banter within running who are going this guy is running to prove a point and he's running a 5k and he's got a hydration vest on and even that in itself like you know just to briefly explain it's like usually hydration breaks are reserved for ultra marathons or really really long runs they're like you know 10 10k plus um he's done a 5k around a football stadium and he's got a hydration vest on so all of this is just funny it's a it's it's a funny light-hearted uh thing that we can all get involved in before a potentially um brutal game of football in general i think the mistake any human makes not just Miguel Delaney is when they compare anything they do or are capable of doing to what a professional athlete does their bodies physically aren't the same as yours they are at the molecular level a different thing I'll never forget when Tim went was invited to the high performance center at Arsenal and the journos and stuff that went there were allowed to compete in some of the activities that the players do and measure their measurables against the players and of course they came up short on most of them if not all of them but the one that Tim said like you know some of the fastest sprintiest journos who were like athletes you know and still you know 23 24 years old could get a sprint speed that was maybe a little faster than the slowest player but the repeat sprint the number of sprints in a certain period of time no one could get anywhere near and it just goes to show you like the lung capacity the the fitness levels the vo2 max of these players like we're not we're not they're built different as the kids yeah i've also, I'm now, my ego in this regard, because I was probably in the former camp, but now having been sent, well, I think Rob Holding has sent me his pre-season training plan.

40:39Michael Timbs:I've seen Ben White's pre-season training plan. How much of it is the tanning bed? You can be honest with us, just friends here. I can speak from experience. One, your skin looks great. But two, it is beyond brutal. I think there's been, there are a few examples. I think like John Terry put one up or there was maybe one that came out of Liverpool. And every year, like in preseason, those things kind of go viral of like, you'll never believe how difficult this is. It is brutal. That as in, it's bearing in mind is, well, that's one session and they do it. I think from Rob's calendar, it was like four days on in a week.

41:23Michael Timbs:It was either four or five days on in a week, two kind of semi-rest days. And it's not like, well, after this running day, then you have one day where you just kind of chill. And it's like, no, it's just like different running and sprinting. Or you're in the gym and you've just got to be there for an hour and a half, two hours, and just exercising your hamstrings and stuff. It's like, it's horrible. So yeah, after that, I was like, I'm never going to comment on like, how we can understand how a footballer feels or their fitness levels. And which is why also on that note, the whole Declan Rice thing being like, you know, this stuff about his pain.

42:01Michael Timbs:I saw you tweet about that as well, I think. yeah like who knows who knows declan rice is a he could uh blow up and hopefully not but he could get injured equally the guy has the the the horsiest legs i've ever seen in person they are the veiniest leanest and yet the biggest most impressive things i've ever uh i've ever seen and that's coming just as a friend uh you know yeah i i mean i lived next door to uh to an nfl player a running back and uh it's like he'd he'd wear you know like basketball shorts you know the really loose basketball shorts and they would look like bike bike spandex on it it's just crazy so i mean i look the thing people i think fail to understand is to be a footballer you have to be insanely good at football but in addition to that you have to be in the one tenth of one percent of being an athlete too and that's like exactly it's why a lot of players don't make it by the way because they may have the footballing ability but they just don't have the raw athleticism that's what's changed about the game um exactly we can move on from this but but fair to say that miguel delaney has suffered uh the running around the azteca so i like him yep and so now the uh but the players know what to expect.

43:18Okay, Io a stock falling, correct? I believe. Yeah, I forgot we're even still in the stock. I'm just going to do a super quick one. And it's a harsh one, okay? I get it. And people probably not like this because I'm going to talk about an 18-year-old here. But I'm going to give Io Buati a stock falling. And I'm only giving it to him because he's such a focus of transfer noise this summer and Arsenal transfer noise. I haven't really seen it with him this tournament. Now look, I've been very clear, don't use international football to rate players higher or lower, right? I mean, there are a lot of our players that don't look good for the national teams because just disjointed, different system.

43:52I thought, especially in the first half, he was just bypassed in midfield. He couldn't get on the ball. He's not much of a passer. He's more of a carrier. But I did not see him have the personality and the technical quality to get that game under control in a game that I expected Morocco to control. And so it's not that he was bad. I'm not saying he was bad, but to my eye, in this tournament so far. Ayuboadu has looked like an interesting young talent, but I have seen other young talents in this tournament that I think have looked far more interesting. Gilberto Mora for Mexico would be a starter, but, you know, slightly different position, obviously.

44:28One's more attacking, one's more central midfield-y. I don't know, Timsey, like, I'm not trying to pile on to an 18-year-old, but given that we're linked and it's an interesting story, you watch those players more closely. When you watch them more closely, maybe you notice more of their flaws than you would with other players. He hasn't stood out to me yet.

44:44Michael Timbs:Yeah, fair. I think that is always the, and also like it's a World Cup and you never really know how they play for their country as they do for their club and whether, what is a true reflection of how they could play for you. But yeah, I guess for me anyway, I'm always just looking at like, I guess it depends on the player profile, but for me, I'm looking at moments and just, because you always feel like in the right team under Mikel Arteta and his tutelage we we'll be able to extract more than other teams would out of a player and so for me I'm always looking at just like if if there are forward for example it's like it it doesn't matter as much if they're like on the ball the whole time and they're there for 90 minutes and they do like nice good things most of the time it's like how exciting are you in those like how many moments can you produce where I think to me no one can do that in our team like that's that's new like oh you've taken on a man you are so quick and you've cut inside and you've done I haven't seen that in a while or you've done an outrageous piece of skill I thought you were going to recycle the ball but you ended up turning around beating a man and playing an incisive pass like it's more I look for those moments in any sort of of our targets especially in international football that's what I would that's what I'll be looking for more because then you can kind of pick that and be like well if you put that in our team and and add a little bit of, you know, get used to our structure, then we've got a really exciting prospect on our hands.

46:13Michael Timbs:So I appreciate your stock falling, but I would attach that note onto it. I'm not a ball knower, so you can ignore me. No, no, no, you are a ball knower. I am a hysterical irritant. By the way, getting back to the training regiment thing, you're sort of newer to the podcasting game. If you do want the preseason podcaster training regiment, I can send that over to you it's brutal I'm horrible I'm horribly out of touch and out of fitness yeah well you're going to need to be way more out of fitness to be ready for podcasting we'll work on you okay let's quickly touch on these games today and I'm going to disappoint you Timsey as much as I love my Arsenal boys and I'm excited to see them I think I am more excited for Brazil Norway I think it's going to be a great game and rumors of Martinelli 10 rumors of Martinelli playing support striker for Brazil.

47:09Yep, yep. And I mean, not 10, but...

47:12Michael Timbs:He did hint. He likes him in that role. I mean, it would be a lot of fun and very exciting. And it is one of those things, right? There's always been this thing with Martinelli. First, the defense when he wasn't playing great was like, he doesn't have the right players around him. Then the defense was, well, he's not a winger. And I do sort of align with that. I think he's either a support striker or a striker. And he might get to play that way for Brazil. And I'm excited to see it. yeah yeah i'm look i i really like martinelli and as much as he can be frustrating at times like i've always been in the camp is it because you look like him or other reasons yeah because one he's my brother there you go um i i always try to i always pick the position of defending a player over just like hating them and wanting them out the club um but i've always i've always liked him because one because of his attributes and two like he never stops trying man and like he's one of those players as well he'll never kick up a fast of like wherever you play him wherever we need him whatever role he has to fulfill he might not do it but he'll try the whole time and I respect that highly and I really do rate him for it um and same thing if he if he ends up playing in that support striker role and like it's exciting maybe it's again it might give us a little bit of a headache if he actually plays it well gives us an added element where if maybe we don't need as much of a traditional sort of number 10 or someone playing off the striker or filling that gap maybe it's a thing of I personally don't really like Havertz in that number 10 role when he kind of played it a few times last season if it was a Martinelli and it was a bit more playing off of Giocarez or even Havertz up top and it's the traditional kind of big small combination I don't mind that I don't mind that it might be something different and uh yeah I actually think he's kind of an underrated footballer when he when he has when he when he knows what to do or when he's told what he has to do I think he he he's actually kind of like an underrated footballer um so yeah I mean so I'm excited I'm also generally generally speaking it more excited by the Brazil Norway game in terms of a matchup anyway like i think mexico england it's one it's at the azteca mexico are at home so all of that plus the altitude plus is england is coming home and all this we haven't played that well it means it's an exciting clash but just because of all of those mad things that are combining whereas brazil norway if you look at their sides and you've got the harlan the gabrielle kind of element norway have been pretty solid but they're maybe not as talented or as as good a side as as brazil but then brazil are flat to receive a little bit that makes for a more exciting and level clash yeah so i would agree with you i don't hate you for it i totally understand obviously with the kit i'm wearing and the watching that game later tonight i will obviously have my eyes on the mexico england game more um but i'll also obviously definitely be watching the brazil norway game because that i think it'll be a corker yeah yeah i agree look rather than doing a full England preview.

50:12We don't need to do that right now. I want to get this out to you. We will do a full weekend recap tomorrow, plus have an Arsenal Vision main pod. So suffice it to say, I think big decisions for Tuchel. He's got some injured Arsenal guys that he needs out there. Will he push them? Will he keep them in reserve? I think Rice will probably start. I think Saka probably just not fit to start, especially in the Azteca. We'll see. But look, I'm rooting for the three Lions because I'm rooting for my guys. But by the same token, if the England boys get to go home and rest up for the new season, it won't break my heart but for my England friends I'll be rooting for them so Timsy I wish you luck have a great day watching the World Cup and we'll talk tomorrow thank you so much

50:46Michael Timbs:I appreciate it hopefully Saka doesn't start we protect him and then he'll come on in 20 minutes and score lots of goals but maybe we go home and then the boys can get a rest I don't know it'll be really fun it'll be a really fun game and I do think England are good enough to get through it and I I think I might get it totally wrong but I think we win yeah And I will simply say that I think because Mexico are at home in the Azteca, there will be a little more burden is the right word, but pressure on them to go play and be protagonists in the game. And I think that suits England a little more.

51:20Maybe we'll see. And they've got a lot of strength and depth that Mexico doesn't have. So interesting one to watch. World Cup is getting good. This is going to be a great day of games. It is. This is a great day of games. We've got to give FIFA World Cup its dues.

51:34Michael Timbs:It's looking good. Did you get that little tinge of sadness when you realized like, no third game today games aren't on we're getting to that time where there aren't games on all the time all day it's not going on all the time when's the first day there's no football oh boy um i think it's in two days day of no football is tuesday right wednesday yeah so so tuesday no tuesday we have games round of 16 yeah and then wednesday there are no games so three days time wow and then we're down to the one a day yeah one a day it's wrapping up and that's nice i don't mind that because then it builds the hype more so i but then the then the slip under the radar the great news is then the uefa pre-season post world cup nations league b starts and then fifa's late summer club world cup starts and then the club season starts so don't worry yeah it'll be fine and uh and infantino will be at every single one of them on a private jet and the players will all uh be replaced by robots okay thanks timsy thank you man i'll check you tomorrow yeah you definitely will.

52:33My name is Eli Smith. We love you. And we will talk to you after World Cup 10.
