In short
World Cup Daily debate on star power in the tournament, focusing on Lionel Messi’s hat trick vs Algeria, plus analysis of France and Argentina’s lineups, and quick takes on other matches and England’s opener vs Croatia.
Guests
Light Smith (Arsenal Vision host) and Timsy (co-host). No other guests appear in this episode (they tease a future special guest for an England-focused World Cup Daily).
Key claims
- Messi’s relaxed, dominant hat trick shows the World Cup is “about stars” and “moments,” not just collective stories.
- Haaland and Mbappé represent “young icons,” but Messi “always grabs the headlines.”
- Portugal’s chances hinge on how Ronaldo is used; Messi’s performance could undermine Portugal’s plan.
- For France and Argentina, talent is abundant but roles/fit matter: France’s midfield setup (Rabiot + Chouaméni) and Dembele’s role may be suboptimal; second-half acceleration vs Senegal is a warning to other favorites.
Notable examples
- Messi dismantling Algeria with three goals (including an offside-near-post finish).
- France’s improved second half vs Senegal; Barcola’s impact after coming on.
- Stock risings: Messi, Barcola, Olise, Haaland; also Jordan scoring their first-ever World Cup goal.

0:55Lionel Messi is still the greatest and at his advanced age how old is he? I can vaguely remember what it was like to be that age. This is the Arsenal Vision World Cup Daily. My name is Light Smith. You can buy me on Twitter, you can get a hell of a phone. That's how I know he's old. He's so old, I can still remember what it was like to be the age he is. And that is one of the fun things when you watch sport and they say things like, this decrepit ancient warrior still able to push the boulder up the mountain with his decaying body. And that person is like a decade younger than you. Makes you feel awesome.
1:23Really, really does. But a man who doesn't know how that feels is here with me now and his name is Timsy.
1:27Michael Timbs:Hello, Timsy. Hello, Elliot. Yeah, I'm rapidly approaching that age though, I fear. No one rapidly approaches the age I'm at. You crawl towards the age I'm at, man. You're on your hands and knees crawling towards the age I'm at. But that's okay. That's okay because we all enjoyed the World Cup yesterday. And I have to say, a day for personalities. We'll put it that way. Definitely one of those. I do want to let people know that we will have a regular Arsenal Vision main pod tomorrow and the World Cup Daily. England obviously go today, so we'll have a sort of England tinge coverage of that. Might even have a very special World Cup Daily for you with a special guest.
2:09More on that, Timsy, if you care to share it, or we can just let it be a big surprise.
2:13Michael Timbs:Yes, we can. Well, we'll let it be a surprise, but it's a good friend, an Arsenal favourite. He hopefully will be coming on the show, and he's a great guy. He's now based in the US, so it kind of makes sense, and you can probably figure out who that is now. People are going to be Googling. Google away, but don't Google until after you've listened to our wonderful World Cup Daily, which starts with, get this, headlines. And Timsey, I'm going to let you take the first crack. I will go with the very obvious, the World Cup is here. This is the day that I feel the World Cup truly started and caught the imagination of everyone in the US and the world.
2:57Michael Timbs:This was the one I think we were all waiting for, where you have the, I say two pretenders, but the two young icons in waiting, Mbappe and Haaland doing their thing. But the goat was always going to have the last laugh. He was always going to grab the headlines. And here's my headline. It is Lionel Messi is back and looks scarily relaxed. unbelievable performance he could have had five or six he was laughing and smiling the whole time whilst he's just dismantles Algeria yeah a frightening performance for just how calm and casual and MLS it looked you could have if it weren't for the kits I would have thought Inter Miami were playing and he just scored three goals like he does for for Inter Miami It was amazing.
3:51Michael Timbs:I loved it. It's so crazy because it wasn't that long ago that you were ridiculing me, mercilessly, really, just cruelly. You and Lewis just cruelly berating me when I said, my under-the-radar pick for player of the tournament is Lionel Messi. And you said that fraud, that ancient fraud. You don't remember it that way? And now look at me. I've got Messi's first World Cup kit on. Incredible. How the turntables. yes but um no all kidding aside i mean i'll i'll go with my well you know what let me say this my headline yesterday was talk about takes if i'm going to celebrate a take that looks good so far i'll celebrate one that age like milk yesterday i said this world cup is not just about stars my headline today is the world cup is indeed about stars it was a day that shows that football sometimes can be about the collective and can be about the less heralded players but is also fundamentally powered by star power, like a lot of sport.
4:51And I do think US sport culture, and maybe it's unfair to say US sport culture, I think it is global sport culture, but is powered so much by the identity of its iconic figures. And we do like to build up heroes, right? I mean, when the camera pans to someone in the crowd, it's often Tom Brady, it's often LeBron James, if he's at a sporting event, right? It's these heroes of the game, these titans. And there is no bigger hero than Messi certainly, but Messi, Mbappe, Haaland. The broadcasters have invested a lot of verbal energy in building these players up and they got them all on this day. They got the goals.
5:31I think what's interesting is that the goals were a reflection of the players so clearly in some ways. They reflected what they are, their identity. I mean, Haaland's relentless running and work. He's a battering ram. Mbappe looking arrogant and casual for a half of football where you think, wouldn't want that at my club, that guy doesn't work at all. And then he's like, oh no, I'm just going to totally change the fabric of this game. And Messi walking for 80 % of the game, scoring for 20 % of the game. It was performances that really reflect the character of those players. And I do think in a World Cup where, and by the way, heat was really brought up and the climate has been brought up a lot.
6:13There have been plenty of games that have been played not in particularly hot climates not in particularly oppressive weather but if the weather does become more of a story then it may become more of a moments tournament and i think these are three players that showed they are the players for the moments you know yeah yeah i think
6:29Michael Timbs:up until this point as well not to say we haven't had big players scoring and big teams winning but today I say today yesterday was the game in which yeah those iconic players had those iconic moments and I think a World Cup does need that as uh so far this World Cup it's been full of really nice stories and things that maybe people have used to kind of balance the the negative parts of the World Cup that we've heard so much about but really what kind of translates through World Cups and what carries on and what you get in the the montages of World Cups in in 12 years time and in 20 years time are those moments by these big players not to say that you know the the Cape Verde's story and stuff isn't important and that the fan stories aren't important but there needs to be magic on the pitch as well from these big players to really make a big impact across the world.
7:32Michael Timbs:And so now we've got that full breadth so far and we still have another game day to go full of England, the sort of favourites that can they do it? Is it coming home? And then Ronaldo, the other goat. So I think by the end of today, fingers crossed, I'm just going to jinx it right here, right now. We should have the full breadth of just this is what a World Cup is all about. Yeah, I have a theory that Messi scoring a hat trick in the opening game is the worst thing that could have happened to Portugal's chances to win this tournament. Because in my mind, and maybe I'm, maybe I need to be careful about just being, well, because maybe I need to be careful about dismissing Ronaldo in light of what Messi just did.
8:13But like, in my mind, Portugal's best chance to go deep in this tournament, and even win it, they have the talent, is for Ronaldo to be comfortable being a role-playing option for a team that has largely moved past him. What he is going to do now in light of Messi's performance is demand to start and take 17 shots while other players are screaming for the ball in open positions. So, I mean, as he has his solo battle with Messi for reputation, I think Portugal could be in deep trouble.
8:42Michael Timbs:For sure. But then also, time and time again, maybe Ronaldo's ego and his level of just obsession with greatness, maybe it also is so great that he does end up scoring and he's like no I'm not gonna actually let this pass me by and I need to stay on his coattails sort of thing I wouldn't also be surprised by that because he is also a machine like he's he's he's not as good as Messi like with their their current levels if you compare their current levels like that their Messi is clearly ahead and he still has that sharpness and not to say Ronaldo hasn't scored goals and doesn't score goals but the way Messi still fits in that team and just looks like the absolute crucial player in that team surrounded by very competent players Ronaldo I don't think has that level of one importance and also as you say like compared to his teammates he doesn't stand out and I don't think he'll allow himself to play that part.
9:50Yeah, look, I mean, Messi turns 39 next week. Obviously, again, as we discussed, ancient. Spring chicken. But Ronaldo's 41, and there is a point at that stage where, like, time is undefeated, right? So, like, father time is undefeated, and I do think that eventually, eventually, the game leaves you at the top level. It just does. So we'll see. But I do think it'd be very funny if a Portugal team loaded with talent comes out with a 41 year old just chucking from everywhere because he's trying to
10:19Michael Timbs:catch Messi's hat trick gesticulating yeah yeah exactly exactly who actually win 4-0 and he's fuming because he hasn't scored yeah um I don't know that there are other headlines because it really was those three um but I'm gonna go with one other headline which is interesting day for the alchemy of favored teams and what I mean is if you scratch beneath the surface of Messi and Mbappe and Holland. For both Argentina and France, there's interesting calls to be made. Latoro Martinez started for Argentina instead of Julian Alvarez, for example. Nico Paz is still there as the broadcasters are trying to play him up as the heir apparent to Messi.
10:58And like Nico Paz is very talented, but Messi, I think already had like 200 goals by the time he's Nico Paz's age. So let's pump the brakes a bit. But, you know, with France again, too, what's the alchemy? What's the right way to put that team together? I thought starting Rabiot and Chouameni in midfield was an odd choice that 4-2-3-1 now Rabiot as it turns out had a I think it was a beautiful assist right a line splitting pass for Barcola's goal but you know Barcola came on and looked better than than what had been before France were much much better in the second half but like interesting interesting decisions I think to be made about do you need both Rabiot and Chouameni or can you play just a Chouameni and afford yourself a turkey and you know can you can you reconfigure it to more of a 4-3-3 with a single pivot and get more of the creative influence there because it was a turgid first half from France so I think Timsey for both Argentina and France teams awash in talent some interesting choices to be made around how to get the best out of their team it seems like Argentina obviously at least as far as Algeria concerned and got it spot on with france maybe less clear yeah less clear but the second half was
12:13Michael Timbs:a bit of a i think warning to the rest of the the favorites and the the big teams of the world cup because they did look more comfortable and and and look maybe we're expecting too much just from anyone to be to hit the ground running straight away first half you just look sharp like the fact that Rabiot played in the midfield and seemingly always plays. Like there are always these players with the big teams, the big nations where you don't really get much of a look in with these players domestically. And Rabiot is great, but like you, you don't have him down as like the guy in midfield. And yet he, he just plays quite an important part in that team.
12:59Michael Timbs:and obviously a great assist and just looked super comfortable. I think maybe it just took them a little while to get not up to speed with them because they were definitely on the front foot, but maybe just feel comfortable enough going into the second half. They're like, we've got this. They've threatened a little bit, Senegal. They're no mugs, obviously, but it was very clearly like they were the dominant team on the ball. And I think it was just trying to find the right breaks and find the right flow of football. I don't know. In the second half, they, as they say, played with the handbrake off and just looked a lot freer and did look super dangerous.
13:44Michael Timbs:I think Alise is absolutely key for how their attack works. Like Dembele playing. Well, there's just too much talent really for it to fit. But I think Alise allows them the most kind of free-flowing football. When he is on the ball, I think the attack makes more sense than if someone else like Dembele or even Mbappe gets the ball deeper. I say this, this is just what I've seen. But I probably need to speak to Julian LeRond to see what he thinks as the expert. We can't invite him back on the pod. every time he comes back on the pod we lose to psg and a champions league there is there is zero chance of us losing to psg in the next few fair we can break that hoodoo yeah i think we're okay but yeah as in it just seems to me like when the the the front line and the attack looks a lot more slick when alice has the ball in those dangerous areas than than others just because i think they're more end of phase type attackers and alice is both a start of the phase and end of the phase he's just a very complete forward so um yeah it feels a little like jamming things in when you play Dembele as a 10 like I I don't you know I mean I know that he drops deep for PSG but but I agree it's just putting him in because he's well he's won the Ballon d 'Or and it is and he is amazing he's great but also he's very clearly not the guy in that team and see it's not the natural but I don't know yeah I see I think you could you could almost play like a a Rabio or a let's say Chiumeni, Cherky, and Olise midfield.
15:26And let those two, you know, and you say, well, that doesn't have a lot of protection. Well, you're France, right? And then you could move Mbappe out left, where I still think he operates best. Now, Mbappe might say, no, you can't move me there. I want to play striker. And he just dictates that. You could play Dembele in that false nine role that he's so comfortable with. And suddenly you've got Cherky and Olise and Dembele linking up in the central areas. And then you could play Mbappe and Barclay or Mbappe and Douay or whoever you want off the wings, you know, or you can play Dembele off the right.
15:54I mean, like, there's a lot of ways you could skin it. But to me, the sort of, the two things, playing both Rabiot and Choumeni and playing Dembele essentially behind the striker, like, I don't love that construction for France.
16:09Michael Timbs:But I feel like Deshaun probably needs a bit of praise here where even like the Euros playing Griezmann, who everyone can realize isn't the same player that he was back in the day, but still like they aren't absolute world beaters, but he just finds like, it's whether the player fits the role rather than just the best player plays and we're just going to jam him in, which I think is the temptation with a team that is that replete with. Yeah, I got a bit of that FIFA mentality in what I'm talking about that, like it's a video game, play all the best players, but I don't love the Dembele role that he's the player.
16:47who is too good to utilize in a way that I think limits him from influencing the game.
16:54Michael Timbs:And I think maybe this is something we'll see later on, but strength off the bench will be important and has been important so far. And it might be a bit of a hit to an ego, but maybe you just go, look, we just have too many talented players to play you all. We need to, right, this game, Dembele, you'll start up top or you'll start on the right and Alise, well, I think Alise has to play every game. But maybe there is just some rotation in that regard and just they have to all accept the Barcala role. Yeah, and like, gosh, it's tough because I think Dembele is a weird player in the sense that he has a very unique role for PSG.
17:38I mean, he is their chaos agent in some ways. He drops into all kinds of unexpected positions. You'll find him in a way. he plays like a Mikel Arteta false nine did before we got Yokorest, right? Which is, you'd be as likely to see him on the halfway line as running into the box. He arrives late. Sometimes he's sprinting forward. He's an amazing pressing agent. And they obviously press very aggressively. He drifts out wide. He does all kinds of things. In a national team that's got a lot of stars and a lot of players that might want to be in certain areas or a manager that may not want his players moving into those zones, it can be hard to know how to get the best out of Dembele because you can't give him the same role he has at PSG.
18:16That's a very idiosyncratic role in a very specific kind of system. So I'd be very curious to see how France do it. But to your point, I mean, they just, they gently pressed the accelerator in the second half and absolutely blew the doors off of a Senegal team. And maybe this will come up, like, Senegal could have been ahead, should have been ahead through Ismail Sar on halftime. But that Senegal team, if you just look at the squad, and by the way obviously made it to the afcon final in that that crazy contested you know final final game but they won yeah but but setting that aside that is not france struggling with some minnow in their group that is france taking a half to figure out one of the most talented teams
19:04Michael Timbs:in the world cup top to bottom so yeah i think i think the alarming thing for i just imagined like like i think a lot of world cups anyway you see these other big teams and you imagine your country playing these teams at a later stage and i just watched that france game and thought as they kind of got up to speed the the how they did effectively just flick a switch and suddenly bang a goal and then from then on it was like there's just no looking back and then suddenly it's like well now it's actually a bit frightening how quickly they've turned it on and I don't see many teams being able to deal with that um so that that was a little bit worrying for in terms of me being an England fan yeah but very very impressive and also that yeah Senegal had their chances for sure and they did find some joy but I think there was always a even when they they got one France just scored straight away again.
20:06Michael Timbs:So yeah, there was no real worry. I think once they scored, it was a done deal, really. It occurs to me that we are running quite long before we've gotten even to our stocks, and we still have to look ahead to England. So I will give us the opportunity to pivot. Now, I will say the stocks rising section could be quite quick, because we basically devoted the headlines to the stocks rising. And I think you could probably pick them before we do but what you don't want to do is you don't want to pick anything before you've picked up your age you want in the morning put it into a cup eight ounces of water drink it down and you are sorted let me tell you friends dear friends and people who may not consider me a friend or like me at all but are listening to my voice because they like timsy and they're just stuck with me nonsense nonsense but but there's always a little bit of truth in nonsense is that how that works i don't think so uh in this day and age maybe anyway 75 plus ingredients backed by four clinical trials the thing i like about ag1 is that you can spend weeks researching months researching wind up with a shelf full of 17 different things you have to take you have to have an app that reminds you to take it or you can take ag1 and you can get a probiotic a prebiotic you can get your multivitamin you can get key nutrients that fill health gaps that fills uh fill nutrient gaps support gut health improve nutrient levels within three months clinically shown to do that you can get your superfoods and your antioxidants it's an easy habit to get into you're going to feel the difference and if you use our promo code you're going to need an 82 value the ag1 flavor sampler in your welcome kit and your first ag1 subscription plus a morning person hat which between us i would light on fire but that's okay drink ag1.com slash arsenal vision that's drink ag1.com slash arsenal vision drink ag1.com slash arsenal vision and it is time for the nordvpn mvp our top stock rising is the nordvpn mvp upgrade your online protection with an all-in-one security app get an exclusive nordvpn deal and four months extra at nordvpn.com slash arsenal vision it's risk-free with nordvpn's 30-day money-back guarantee nordvpn.com slash arsenal vision nordvpn.com slash arsenal vision do it now timsy who's your mvp oh my mvp I'm you know what of course it's messy so I'm not gonna say messy I'm gonna say Argentina fans the Argentinians the atmosphere in Kansas City was up there with what Scotland produced it was extraordinary and it's Kansas right I've never been to Kansas wait wait so am I gonna piss a lot of people oh sorry you've done it you've got only gone and done it it is actually Missouri okay so kansas city does exist new jersey in missouri and in kansas the stadium is currently in missouri but as i understand it they are building a new one in kansas so you would have been right but you are currently wrong i'm i'm wrong that's fine it's not the first time won't be the last but i just argentina fans i fell in love with them it was my i had my first experience that sounds weird my first interaction with my first interaction with the Argentinian fan base at large at the Qatar World Cup and that was a relatively sanitized in comparison experience and they are just incredible like the way they live and breathe I think it's football is incredible that the I think a lot's made of I think many people know sorry just how much it means to them but actually seeing it in the flesh and seeing the numbers at which they come to games and they support even if they don't go to the games they go to the cities and it's amazing stuff like it is truly a religion i don't even know if you could call it a religion because it's beyond i don't even know but it's just a level of devotion and uh fandom that i actually have very very rarely seen and they're just incredible they're always an incredible asset i think to world cup so i'm really happy that they started as they did messi started as they did and it just gave them a reason to just be even even happier and more animated and uh it's nice to see the americans also seeing this and uh yeah i i gotta give it to them i love it uh but i i think it's wrong and i have to say i think you've missed it so i'll go with my stock rising timsy i don't know how you overlooked it.
24:35I think it's Lionel Messi. I think you got to go with it. All right. I am going to pick Messi. And first of all, to your point about Argentina fans, you go to these games and your hope is if I go to the game, especially if it's your national team, maybe I get lucky and I see something that I remember for the rest of my life that's part of football folklore forever. And seeing 38-year-old Messi score a hat trick in his final World Cup, well, what I presume will be his final World Cup, his sixth World Cup, just incredible so lino messi is my stock rising he has tied miris off close as the all-time world cup score one remember once upon a time when people said messi doesn't turn up in world cups because he couldn't guide mediocre argentina teams to world cups doesn't feel that long ago does it eight balance door balance door it's not ballon doors balance door eight uh all-time goal score at a world cup and i presume he will have that record by himself before it's said and done a sixth world cup tied only with Shakira I think kidding um yeah soon to be Ronaldo and Ronaldo and I think he's underrated I have been fortunate enough he played his first ever professional football match in 2004 so really that was when I first started to be able to watch a lot of club football and a lot of football in general and so I have seen his whole career and I remember I used to be very data-led in how I analyzed football because before I really understood football some would say wait there's a time when you didn't understand football but before i did data helped me as someone who'd started with american sport and data is very rich and i'd see these charts and i'd see these graphs and there'd be all these players you know clusters you know you know you know the charts right dots and each dot's a player and then up into the right yeah totally away from every player would be messy and it didn't matter what the chart was it was always messy up into the right in his own universe i think we have misunderstood understood how great he is.
26:27I think the Ronaldo thing has been a distraction because there are people that think he and Ronaldo are great. That is not the case. Ronaldo, great player, no discredit to him. He isn't even in the same sphere of influence and quality that Lionel Messi is. Lionel Messi has lapped the field. He is the greatest of all time in a way that few players ascend to that level. And because we always want to, we always want to name the new goat. Someone has a good game like goat goat we've we i think we've underestimated messi's incredible remarkable talent and this game comes out and you watch him and algeria is not pushovers in my mind they looked like it to be fair they did look like pushovers but there's some talent in that team and he just effortlessly dominated that game he could have had assists he could have had other goals.
27:21He had an offside goal where the finish, again, he just makes that perfectly timed run, not quite perfectly timed as it turns out, but near post finish, effortless. Obviously, the third goal is the pick of the bunch, as if to say, no, this is my moment. He still has it at a level that I still think is as good as anybody in the game. And to me, he's a stock rising because I think Timsey don't take this for granted don't assume that when he's gone the next Messi will just play we are watching the end of the career of the greatest to ever play the greatest game and I don't know that there will ever be anything like him so we have to make sure that we don't
28:03Michael Timbs:undersell it and that we enjoy it yes all of those things I agree 100 I don't want to that was so beautiful i don't want to ruin it by saying anything else but just just know that i do agree and i think at every single stage of his career from when he was 20 there's never been a 20 year old like it at 25 there's never been a 25 year old and all the way up to now never has a 39 year old been so good at football and had such influence at a world cup as well and yeah he's just quite simply obviously the best ever yeah i your words ring a little hollow for me given that you didn't pick him as a stock rising but it's it's totally cool no big deal i'm kidding i did it for the love of the game for the love of the game the fans needed it so do you want to pick another stock rising is there another one we've covered just about everyone um that that was big on the day but do you do you want to pick another one yes stock rising barkler barkler because he i know look we we are linked with him weirdly i wasn't that excited that we've been linked with him because I think going on for next season, if we got him, great, but I wouldn't want him to be like the big business that we do because I think we need someone ready and just more of a finished product.
29:17Michael Timbs:Not to say he's not a great player, but... Well, the irony is that the knock on him is he's not clinical and then he comes into this game, he gets one chance to run through it. It's a perfect finish. Exactly. But stock rising because he actually, to stand out in that France team, is very difficult unless you're Michael Alise or Kylian Mbappe and we saw even with Dembele like kind of anonymous and just floating through and just not couldn't find his feet or find where he should be or how he should play and not to say that that's an easy thing in that France team but someone like Barcola who knows he's not the top dog or one of the top dogs and yet comes on and is just very, very decisive and just like no mucking about really.
30:07Michael Timbs:He's like, I'm just going to, the run for the goal was great. The finish was obviously really, really good. And I think he's maybe just found that that's his role. And I think someone like him in a team like France is actually priceless. You need players, I think, who know and fully buy into what their role is and I think if he is that person where he knows he sees the gaps of where he can fit in and is just going to apply himself in the way that he knows he can I think that could be invaluable and like you could not just say he's going to stop but I think you could see him really playing some uh important parts if if France is to go deep into this tournament and i think this is not the this is not the last goal we're going to see from him because he he was a thorn in uh in the senegalese side and i think played a very very crucial role yeah i you already talked about him but i think you could you could also throw a stock rising at olise who like despite mbappe's goals i thought olise looked the best player and he's stocks already so high he's ridiculous player man um and he's 25 yeah it it is the case that that's the player when he was at Palace.
31:27If you could go back and do it again and not let him go to Bayern. Yeah, and this is the weird thing.
31:33Michael Timbs:My best mate, he is a Crystal Palace fan and he's been saying for the longest time, this is obviously before the FA Cup win, before the conference win. He's like, trust me, of all the... He's seen Zaha, he's seen obviously Eze. He's like, trust me, out of all of them, Alise is the most talented, prolific, just incredible player he's seen at Selhurst Park. And for a while, it's Eze. It was Zaha, now it's Eze. Like, look at him. But he's like, no, trust me. Alise is just a machine. And he plays beautifully. And he's absolutely right. He is incredible. I'm going to throw a stock rising. You know what we might do?
32:18We'll stick with stock risings a bit. And I don't know that there's much of a stock falling on this one. so maybe we'll just do bullet stock drawings so my stock rising i'm gonna i got two more i want to do one quickly i'll throw to you in another one quickly i'm gonna say holland just because i spend most of my time hating erling holland with a deep deep passion enjoying his smug weird face he made after we lost at the etihad walking around with his shirt off the smug we've already done it face i love that he didn't win it i love that we shoved that back in his face like i spend most of my time hating the guy then you come to the world cup and you watch him and you go oh yeah like i probably don't realize how good he is because i i zero in on everything he does wrong and how much i dislike him and root against him and how much pain he has the ability to cause me but there was one moment in that game where the the defender let it bounce i don't even think we got a goal off this it was and he like wasn't even yeah on the right hand side and holland wasn't even like in the camera and all of a sudden there's this flash of this giant robot that just runs past him and takes the ball off him and tries to cut it back and doesn't get the cut back quite right but like his his physical dominance in speed and power creates the kind of havoc that no one else in the game right now does he is he is physically dominant in a way that i can't really analogize um and i think it's just interesting to watch him shorn because they didn't make the last world cup so shorn of this this um hatred and a enmity that i have for him in club football i have to say timsey like he's he's pretty good isn't he he is he is sorry my ring light has gone out ring light has gone and now now everyone can see what you really look like yeah exactly let me
34:06Michael Timbs:tell you man it was even better than before um but no i i agree so i actually think we're gonna to see now from maybe even the premier league players but especially like harlan for example the joy he's now gonna get compared to every week in the premier league where defenses are so solid and very few teams in the premier league give you much at all and it's a battle and they're just ready to just you know go to war not give you an inch now he harlan gets to a world cup and he's oh my god there's space everywhere this is incredible he's like he's like i've said this a few times but he is like one of those thoroughbred racing horses that it's a sad story of like they haven't been let out the paddock in 10 years they finally get unlatched and get freed into a fresh green field and you just see them gallop and you're like that is that's impressive yeah um he is i i second that i hate him for city but i don't hate him i hate him at city but i actually really there's so much about him that i really do like um and so it it's nice that we get to see him not in a city shirt and it allows me to actually like him um because i think he's he's i would love him if he played for us and he seems like a actually good bloke and just he's he's a a fun player to watch because he is an absolute beast i mean the whole the whole norwegian team by the way as unsurprisingly huge they they are massive just and you're gonna you're gonna play some of these t teams as well we're like iraq then they're not huge and there's going to be a lot of like for example south american teams quite diminutive and like good on the ball and then you're just coming up against these norwegian monsters they were big it's it's gonna be fun it's gonna be fun and that's the beauty of the world cup as well just to have total to total someone like a cape verde for example suddenly they they just have to come up against norway and just sort of try and deal with that it's like cool this is the beauty of the world cup it's amazing well and and that that group the because it's norway iraq senegal and france am i right yes that's any good way around oh yeah that senegal team is too talented to go out in this round so they they have to beat up on iraq they've got to get their goal difference back they've got to beat up on iraq because norway now in pretty good shape with goal difference and even if they lose to france in in a close way i'm gonna i'm gonna just say one last thing um i could use you you told me about it i'll be honest i did not stay up for the last game and i'm sure many of you listening did not catch it unless you're watching sauce listening to this from somewhere where that game was in your morning time but can we quick stock rising the first two goals from the jordan uh from the jordan austria game because yeah they were bangers yeah i actually did yeah saw those the the first two uh so austria is for opener great finish and then kind of a similar finish but for for Jordan's equalizer um yeah good for and and again puts paid to my prediction that this is going to be the most set pieces ever in a world cup and to my recollection there's actually very few apart from like penalties which I think Arnautovic scored the third right at the end from a penalty and again Arnautovic is like one of those players that me and Lewis spoke about it in yesterday's episode it's like they just appear every four years it's like oh you're still you're still playing great for you and and it's still like a talisman it's like the jordan shakiri sort of uh player the luca modric sort of player you know you're gonna have these players that are just on out of it will be at the next world cup in in 2030 and like bril and bolo everyone will go where where did he go between and no one will know exactly but these these are these players as well are invaluable to just your memories of a world cup as well like i'm not going to hear about brie lumbolo or arnautovic again no for like two three but i might see them at the euros yeah of course the next world cup and have no idea where they had gone um uh and i'll stock rise jordan getting their first ever world cup goal my good friend dana ericat ceo of saved the children jordan Obviously, I went to Amman and then visited the Zadar refugee camp in Jordan.

38:43Jordan's a lovely country, lovely people. The refugee camp that we support is in Jordan. So nice to see something good happen to them, even though the end result wasn't what they would have wanted. They get their first ever World Cup goal, which is great. From an Arsenal standpoint, Saliba came through okay for France, it seemed. I will say Martin Odegaard, he is going to have to hope that Mikel Arteta was not watching that game because a rocks goal comes from Odegaard going completely to sleep off the ball defensively and letting his man run past him. And I'm sure Mikel, he probably had a text from Mikel before that game was even done saying, stay alert defensively, track your man.
39:19What are you doing?
39:21Michael Timbs:I kind of see it as the other way being like, I like that. I think the Arsenal boys, I don't need to just live and breathe the intensity every day like I've had to for the last. I'm letting my man go all summer so that I can track him back again. Hey, he got an assist from a corner. What could be more Arsenal than that? Exactly. He's like, Mikel, I'm not going to do the tracking back, but I'll give you an in-swinging corner. That'll be fine. Okay. Any stocks falling for you then otherwise? I think bullets. Yeah. There weren't many negatives that I even saw yesterday.
40:01Michael Timbs:Maybe Senegal stumbling. a little bit, just because it was kind of expected, but equally I thought it had a potential for a bit of an upset or maybe like a stubborn draw. They didn't manage the situation great. They went to pieces a bit when they got behind, and then they did get the goal to make it 2-1, and of course then Mbappe scores. Could the stock falling just be the keepers at the World Cup so far? We've seen a lot of goals, which is fun. We've seen a lot of savable goals. I don't want to take the sheen off Messi at all, but like you know one's from a keeper era that he's quickest to the rebound one is maybe too close to the keeper uh and bapé's disc long range shot like i don't know what the keeper's technique is there's been a lot of that down that goalkeeper yeah yeah maybe i i think the the thing is i always it's it's easy to think of the like have these like themes going on when there are games that where there's quite a kind of disparity between like the the favorite and the the underdog and to be honest because Iraq they're not used to playing against Haaland so I'll weirdly give that goalkeeper a bye because he's not used to someone galloping at 60 miles an hour at him from the side so I'll give him that but generally speaking yeah that the there have been a few errors and a few kind of weak hands um but I think as we progress through the tournament I think defenses will shore up and there's going to be fewer errors on display.
41:38Michael Timbs:But also, this is the fun part. Fans want goals, you know, unless it's your team, you want just goals to go in the whole time. So I'm not exactly complaining about that. No, it's a beautiful thing. No other stocks falling for me really. So we'll go to a quick look ahead. and we've touched on Portugal obviously will Cristiano Ronaldo try to match Messi and destroy the chances of Portugal actually doing something this tournament we'll find out it is going to be fun but let's let's talk England Croatia no not a an easy first game per se but I have to say between the Knicks and Arsenal I'm starting to think maybe it's coming home and this is England's year they looked sensational against Costa Rica in their final tune-up and in Tuchel they have a real manager who understands football.
42:30It looks like he has picked a team where players, sort of like we're talking about with France, but the flip side of that, they're playing in the right position to get the best out of them. No idea what Pakaio Saka has to give. That'll be something we're looking out for. I mean, I'd love for him to be home resting. I think there's an argument that both England and Saka would be better off if Saka wasn't at the World Cup because England wouldn't have to wonder what they can get from him and Saka wouldn't have to wonder if he's damaging his career playing but aside from that I think it's a really good England team some injury concerns aside you expect a big opening from them uh yes yes I do I'll be that that's lovely I I'll be
43:08Michael Timbs:disappointed if we don't win and this is not to say that I expect us to win I expect it but I I expect a a decent performance and it's just gone to rescue the cat so um I expect a good performance the one thing I am I am encouraged by I think despite the selection question marks that were raised I am encouraged by Tuchel and his his interviews and press conferences and talking about the team and he's not shied away and he's talked about the fact that he needs people that are happy to play roles and I like that though that's decisive from a manager to go like look, F all your egos. If we're going to go deep in this tournament and live up to the expectations that the whole country has, then people are going to have to be happy with playing a role and giving that role your all.
44:04Michael Timbs:And I think he's been very clear with that and that's why he's chosen the team he's chosen. So I have, maybe as because we've got closer to the England match, my expectations and my hope has kind of increased. I wasn't too hopeful before the tournament. And then immediately after the France game, I was going, there is no way we're winning this World Cup. But who knows? Against Croatia, they're not an easy opponent. They're obviously definitely not what they were back in 2018, even back in the Euros two years ago. So yeah, it'll be interesting to see. but I think we should have enough to beat them.
44:45Michael Timbs:And if we do, that will, I think, make a lot of England fans relax and just go, we've got a manager who knows what he's doing. We've got a super talented team. We can't forget that, even though there's a few emissions. We have enough to really go far in this tournament. And our record speaks for itself as well. Since 2018, in every major international tournament, both the Euros and the World Cup, we've done really well. and it's not like it's owed to us you know it's not like we deserve to do what we we've we've earned the right to go go deep in these tournaments and now that we have a manager that i love gareth but now that we have a manager who has proven you know tactical know-how that maybe in game that was maybe what we were lacking in those previous tournaments and that tutro is is knows what he's doing and isn't afraid to make big calls, maybe that's what we need.
45:41Michael Timbs:So I'm really looking forward to it. Say that we could be sitting here tomorrow morning, we've just lost 2-0 and it's just, I'm crying. It sometimes feels like England's biggest obstacle in these tournaments is England itself. But to your point, I mean, it's easy to look at recent England experiences failure, but actually England has gotten to finals. I mean, England has made it to the part of tournaments that would have been expected with the talent level but once you're getting to the end of tournaments and you're facing teams like spain or france or you know any of those you can't just expect to win it it's kind of like when we get to the champions league final against psg fair enough if the other team wins it you're up against a good side so i i don't see anybody that england can't compete with um but like anything in these tournaments some of it's going to be the draw but let's see let's see if england can shed the nerves that go with expectation and come out and make a good start so yeah i i always think this as well with only one team can win it obviously but that's the analysis people come here for what it's come on man and that's all i have to say uh the so but england there's been like this thing of such a talented team we need to pounce whilst we can to to get one over the line and but we're not the only team that thinks that and that france must go into basically every international tournament if they don't win it it's failed because they have a constant conveyor belt of the world's most outrageous talents but then portugal would have thought that in some years with ronaldo being argentina's thought that spain has thought that so england has never been as like talented as it has been i think anyway in the last eight years or so maybe not eight years last six years and yet they're still competing against france's team which is arguably one of the most talented they've ever had as well and and you know so it's like it's it's like there'll be six or seven teams every tournament that believe they are the team that should win it they have the best team and it just never you know never works out that way like england we've never delivered on that so maybe the fact that we're definitely not the favorites and definitely don't have the most talented team maybe that works this time i don't know yeah and and also having said that if if england don't win it then the media will cover it with uh calmness and equanimity so that'll be good too absolutely absolutely all right we'll see a lot of arsenal players kicking off with england later today hope you enjoy that uh we'll have a special world cup daily special guest on that one and a lot to recap bumper episode today sorry for running a bit long but but no one complains about extra free content timsey thank you no thank you very much my name is ellie smith we love you and we will talk to you after world cup 10 fifa don't
48:42Thank you.
