In short

The episode is a World Cup Daily roundup focused on recent group-stage outcomes and standout storylines. Topic highlights: Scotland’s collapse vs Brazil (they “imploded,” conceded too much, and now can’t control qualification), Mexico’s historic run winning all three group matches (first time with 9 points; goals by Chavez, Quinones, Fidalgo; Ochoa praised for a long World Cup career), Switzerland’s underwhelming group-top finish despite defensive errors gifting them a win, and South Africa’s remarkable recovery after a disastrous opening (including a win over South Korea; advanced with only 3 points, goal difference -1, and two goals scored).

Guests

Tom Canton (“Melting in the UK”), a regular co-host/friend of the show. Key claims/examples: Mexico’s home advantage and “fifth game curse” possibility; Canada’s defensive collapse vs Switzerland; Bosnia’s Alibegovic stunner helping historic qualification; Czechia’s 1-point, winless group as a “stock falling.”

0:25Michael Timbs:Hello everyone and welcome to the World Cup Daily. my name is Michael Timms. Elliot is not here. He is enjoying just not doing the pod and being with his family which you can totally understand and I'm joined by a friend of the show, Melting in the UK, Tom Canton. How are you doing mate? Yeah not bad. I don't know if you can hear me through a microphone that's half liquid at this point but yeah all good mate. How are you? I'm good. I thought like we had a lovely day yesterday here in New York 28 degrees I want to say fine I'll take that and then just seeing everyone talk about it at home not to you know just live live by the stereotypes oh I complain when it's too hot but when it's when it's the hottest I can possibly remember it being it's not good no it's different as well because I feel like you know I was in france a couple of weeks ago and like 35 degree heat there is it's quite nice plus you can jump in a pool but in the uk 35 degrees feels like 100 degrees so it just holds it just holds the heat in there um so that was probably the perfect time to have six games of football uh in the world cup which is i thought before this the the tournament started that would have been great and i would have really enjoyed it it's actually really hard to keep track of everything especially i mean and i'm here like on on the same time zones whereas you for you guys it's i'm guessing it's yeah watching the other games and then waking up to catch up on the late games basically yeah yeah um so lots to get through obviously you're a busy man so i don't want to keep you forever and ever and ever so uh we can go through through some headlines so you can uh whatever i will give you the the first the first choice yeah i think from a home nation's perspective i think probably kicking off with scotland's disappointment um and i don't know if you saw steve clark's post-match interview walk away i did not he was basically asked you know things are out of your hands now and he's like i don't even want to think about it and just walked away way after yeah yeah i mean full jürgen klopp almost as well he was he walked away from a pre-match interview the other not it was kind of just as a pundit i think he was walking away from interviews as well the other day it just seems to be a theme of the world cup perhaps but yeah i mean scotland just totally imploded you know against brazil and i think they'll be looking back on this as it's that classic thing i remember southampton the premier league when they went they got relegated were you know praised for how they wanted to play out from the back and you know it's all well and good if you've got the players but if you don't you know you can get absolutely screwed over and that's exactly what happened to scotland and you know should have really been four or five on the day but they got away with just the three but really disappointed yeah that was not a good game i actually watched that uh game on the way to the baseball so mash just sit down watch the full game and they were i mean they haven't been good to be honest for that for their three games they haven't been like great value obviously they got the win that they needed to get but now you're looking at it going you should have probably got a few more goals on your side but just because now it's not in their hands at all I mean if you look at like the the live bracket lineup and yeah the best third place teams they're currently seventh with one two three four oh god they're not going to make it no they're currently seventh with one two three four five six seven eight nine teams who have played two games uh so yeah i mean if we were being realistic morocco and brazil are two teams that are just way better than scotland so the line who's they were always going to lose those games and then you play haiti who you know we'll talk about in a second i'm sure but that game that they only narrowly beat haiti at that point you're thinking well your chances of going through his third best team with three points you're gonna have to rack up a fair few goals and not concede many yeah they did neither of those things yeah it was uh yeah not a good showing so i mean obviously a shame i don't know why i think a lot of the scots don't want england to do well i do want scotland to do well because i'm just like it'd be great to see them do well um obviously they're they've made the most headlines with their their off the pitch antics and stealing the hearts and minds of people over here because they've maybe never seen bagpipes before or men in skirts as well or men in men in skirts it was a bit weird there was i i saw the the the clips of obviously them leaving boston everyone in boston being like oh that was a shame and then them marching down miami beach in skirts and played and i was like what world is this this is not real so of all the things that the world cup does good and bad that is one of the very good things is where it just transports weird parts of the world into a video game setting so uh yeah a worthy a worthy headline shame for for scotland not to get something from it or at least damage limitations so now it is totally not up to not in their hands uh whether they get through to the knockouts i presume they're not going to get there and it's going to be a nervy few days for them watching the uh the results come in um But I hope so.

5:48I hope so for the Scots.

5:49Michael Timbs:Right, my headline, my first headline of the day will go to another home nation, but this time a host nation. And that will be Mexico winning all three. They are through to the knockouts. They even brought on a choa as a sort of like ceremonial celebration substitution, if you can call it that. and uh i was also on the way back from the baseball later that evening obviously that mexico had had secured their i'm guessing best ever group finish because i don't know if they've ever won three all three in the group i mean it's no it's the first time they've ever the first time with nine points yeah and um the the the tube stations from just i'm guessing all over new york were absolutely rammed with with mexicans celebrating heading to times square um i'm guessing to just take it over there and uh yeah but uh obviously unbelievable game and they've looked very good so that they beat uh czechia 3-0 and uh they have looked uh good value for for money to be honest and they've only lost i think would it be right in saying you'll know this you're a proper journo is it they've only lost twice in mexico city is that right i mean that sounds true so i'm gonna say you're right uh any mexicans listening could be like oh it was once but yeah yeah yeah exactly yeah but in any case like they are obviously a formidable opponent when they are at home um again they still have the the curse of the fifth game is it the fifth game yeah the fifth game curse which could still prove to be true this tournament but they are through and if things do go as planned and we might play them in mexico city yeah so either in the last 16 or the quarters that is going to be a brutal test for us it's it's interesting you know because i think you know you've got to give mexico a lot of props for their performances over the tournament winning three games you know you don't sniff at that at all you know no game is necessarily easy because of just the expectation around being a home nation as well for the tournament but I and I'm you know I'm tempting fate a little bit here but despite the fact that they've won all three games I still feel and maybe it's just that English arrogance but relatively confident that England would I mean if you look at them player for player they've got some decent players but england should regardless of it being in mexico should win that game if but then who who is a who is a tougher opponent would you say is a better side ghana or mexico mexico mexico yeah but i feel like mexico would almost feel emboldened to try and attack and go for england and that suits england a lot more whereas ghana especially in the group stage you playing for the draw, looking for a point.

8:57And they should have got more because I think they should have had a penalty, but more about that, a different day. But yeah, I think that in the knockout part of the competition, Mexico will be wanting to attack and will be implored by their home fans to do so. And I think that could play into England's hands. As I say, we're assuming that both teams make it this far, but yeah.

9:15Michael Timbs:Yeah, the bracket obviously updates goal by goal, day by day, so we'll see. But yeah, so Chavez with a great finish, to be honest, the first finish on his left. Quinones with the second, Fidalgo with the third. And as I said before, Ochoa stealing the show and getting, I think playing his sixth World Cup because he's 40 or maybe older. He saw Ronaldo score in his sixth and he was like, right, I've got to jump in and have a say here. The rarefied air of Messi, Ronaldo and now Ochoa, which you have to respect to be honest. That is a lot. and I think as well he's one of he's probably one of the only like cult Mexicans that you can remember over the last few World Cups where you're like of all the players that Mexico has had and obviously they've had very good players Ochoa is probably in like everyone's top three of every World Cup they can remember just because he's just been there with his big hair style as well of course it's beautiful beautiful right so we've obviously got a lot more games to go through but any other headlines that scream out to you yeah obviously the other one of the other home nations that we mentioned there canada kind of bottling it if you like um it's another one like the similarity between mexico and switzerland winning their groups without in my view like looking wildly entertaining but particularly switzerland switzerland have somehow managed to top their group playing pretty like like meager football with you know a pretty poor side you know you And the likes of Granit Xhaka, of course, sticks out.

10:52But Switzerland just has those players like Rodriguez that have just been there, it feels like, forever. And there's not really much to Brilham Bolo, of course, at centre-forward, another one. It feels like that team has been the same team. Ruben Vargas, of course, who scored also another one who's been in that squad for so long. And going into the second half, you've got yourselves level. You're in your home stadium looking to take the top spot and to blow two goals as they did with two, in Scottish fashion, two horrendous defensive errors to just gift Switzerland a win as it feels like they have

11:25Michael Timbs:been throughout this tournament was just so disappointing it's great that they're through but it could have been even better for them yeah yeah and I think they had they definitely had chances as well because as you say like Switzerland on the whole have been yeah for topping the group like totally underwhelming and and boring uh I would say there were there were a few things about that game as well which is quite funny one i think the uh the david goal it might be the best goal the tournament's had so far the so the fact that from the right i said i can't remember i can't remember who played it but it was the center back or whatever like lofted the ball through on the right and the guy does this almost like to bring it back to arsenal bergkamp-esque touch i want i I want to make sure I get the, I want to give him his props.

12:19Michael Timbs:Saliba, Nathan Saliba. Saliba. So Nathan Saliba, right. It comes over his right shoulder. And I don't know if he means this, but I want to give him the, like the benefit of the doubt. And just like the ball comes over his right shoulder. He then kills it, but like keeps it up. So he pops it up like Bergkamp against Leicester. Yeah. And then first time, like volley, half volleys it across the box. And then David's there, promised David's there to just like, volley touch like harland it into the net and then you just watch that you go like oh where has where has that come from obviously it gave them hope didn't mean anything they lost the game and they are now second but still i did think like when when a goal like that happens in that sort of scenario where it doesn't actually mean anything and they've got bigger priorities because it doesn't matter they just need to score another one it sort of gets lost like the quality of the goal gets lost in that moment yeah and i did think so many years you know that that might be the best goal this tournament scene i mean there is another one that i'm sure we'll get on to but uh yeah in any case canada finished second so it teased them up for a meeting in los angeles to face south africa i think at the moment or it might be done actually i think it's done um um south africa in los angeles which is uh still i think uh that's gonna be a difficult one because they'd look good but i don't know maybe maybe because they gotta be the weirdest team of the tournament right totally bizarre yeah the way they've bounced back is remarkable because i thought they were beyond done yeah like genuinely the one of the worst opening performance going down to nine men you know it's one of the worst opening performances to a world cup ever and somehow they're through it's second in the group you know the first time i think ever in their history it is stunning what world cup history can provide and you know that that game in general was just because it was just south korea you're just expecting them to score and i mean their opening game couldn't have been more different to south africa really they look so threatening and like they were going to produce so much excitement and they've just gone out as well they haven't gone out yet because they could yet go through as a third place finisher but only with three points it just looked when i was such a damp squib in that game and yeah so bizarre what this sport does it is crazy yeah south africa uh have gone have gone through having scored two goals and a goal difference of minus one like automatically qualified that's bizarre um i guess they have got better as the tournament gone went on and uh yeah it was actually like for them a good performance they like peppered south korea i actually i was quite disappointed in them just because yeah as you say it was a bit just limp just a very like i know they did the headline was another headline being them not starting human son yeah and just like they kind of lacked ideas but even then you're thinking like you're good enough to to to tuck South Africa away but South Africa did cause them a lot of trouble Maseko as well he got the the winner the header uh I said not header sorry the um nice little finish with his left sorry on the edge of the box but it was a problem all game to be honest like he looked super super dangerous um cutting in uh on from the right on his left foot as well so fair dues to South Africa I hold my hands up.

15:55Michael Timbs:I thought you were not getting a single point. I thought you were going to get a red card in probably every game just because the showing of the first group game was just hard to shrug. So, yeah, an interesting one there. But, yeah, Canada and South Africa in the first knockout stage. So that's going to be interesting. My headline, we'll do one more headline and then we'll move on to stocks rising. just because they're kind of... In this show, we have these segments, but we kind of blend in. We seamlessly move from one to the other. So I'll do one more headline, and I will go with...

16:45That's tough. Tells you what a great day of football it was. Yeah.

16:49Michael Timbs:Weirdly, yeah. I'll go with Brazil. Yeah. I'll go with Brazil. um i'm i'm obviously glad they so they finished top uh and even though it was uh to the detriment of of our scottish counterparts um they did look a lot better i mean they they looked much much better um and they've come a long way since the uh is it opening game of the the tournament and yeah vinnie jr actually kind of delivering i thought he was he was obviously very good i mean they must look at the the scottish back line and kind of lick their lips not that they are they are useless but in comparison like the the brazilian front line and cunha obviously is uh added the third sorry so vinnie scored two cunha added the third which was a great finish uh and it just looked more like the brazil that that you would expect i think at first everyone's a bit like well what is what's what's going on why are they just not midfield was all over the place like lackluster and then this tournament as the tournament's gone on they obviously look a lot a lot more solid like Bruno Guimaraes obviously having a good game and and looking like his old self uh and Vinny scoring to just well no the second the second goal fine the first goal and then his first disallowed goal as well coming through just absolute like calamitous defending uh on scotland's on scotland's behalf and uh yeah just not a good look like if you if you want to give yourself any hope especially like you go into that game with a weird mindset of if we get a point we're probably through we're not good enough to go for a win because we will get trounced but then we can't also just set up defensively and hope not to concede loads of goals and so i feel like they were in this weird limbo of like they don't know how to play they just need to in the back of their minds not get trounced that just like you don't really know what the expectation is because there's obviously massive disappointment for scotland they go out but it's like i think miguel delaney did a piece on it today about the because he obviously he's saying that he's like he's seen it with ireland you know when they've made world cups where there's this huge excitement about or wales we've and you know who have to be fair to them got to a semi-final of a European championship but you see these these other home nations get into the world cup and like this is great amazing and then they go in lose and it's like this is unacceptable it's like well I don't know what you're really expecting to be honest yeah yeah so that's a that's an odd one but well done Brazil they're going to be through at the moment they are what is their I wonder what their their game is teeing up to beat so at the moment brazil are playing japan as it stands which will be a proper world cup clash in the same way that brazil scotland was a proper world cup clash a knockout of brazil against japan will be phenomenal that that will be because japan are very very solid and one of my favorite teams to watch and currently second in there to obviously the third uh i guess game week or game day still needs to be played in that group f but uh still to be decided there so moving on to stocks rising there are a lot of stocks floating about both bad and good yesterday because of the sheer amount of football we also have to mention bosnia 3-1 qatar uh some unbelievable fan scenes in bosnia there because uh yeah i don't think they're to be doing anything well be in with a shot of actually getting through as they are so uh right so stocks rising for you tom yeah i mean i'm sticking with bosnia because um 18 year old kareem alabigovic who i i bet most supporters most listeners would probably have never have heard of him i can raise my hand here and say i'm one of those people you'll be in a very significant portion of people i'm sure you can educate us well you know anybody that's been following any of my stuff for any matter of years will know that i've always had a kind of a soft spot for for red bull southsburg down the years just because i've enjoyed like how many players have come through there and gone into the elite level of european football you think about erling harland these days dominic zoboslay previous to that sadio mane dio up and meccano you know so many players have come through the ranks there and canada managers as well as come managers too yeah absolutely and uh it's going to be intriguing to see it was always intriguing to me who would be the next one because they've actually kind of fallen down the pecking order a bit in austrian football recently with sterngratz having won it with um uh what's the um oh what's his name he's a danish youngster who's played for arsenal um uh he left for sterngratz and he was signed by monaco what's his what's his name the danish youngster yeah number 10 no he was a striker and why has his name completely gone out my mind i can let the listeners are screaming it into their headsets what year i want i want to find only a couple years ago he left a couple years ago went to sterngrat scored a load of goals won the title was sold to monaco joined following balagan there and biereth mika biereth is who it was there we go my goodness that was horrendous that was honestly one of the worst things i've ever experienced yeah mika mika biereth um and now Yeah, you've got kind of these other Austrian sides really rising up as Salzburg seemingly have just sold everybody.

22:24But Kareem Alarbegovic has been the most recent. But the ironic thing is that he's now already left Salzburg because Bayer Leverkusen have activated the buyback clause that they had. So he's going to be playing in the Bundesliga next season. And he scores this absolute stunner. Like it's one of my favourite types of long range goals. It's not like the curl into the top right hand corner. It's not the driven strike that just beats the Kip. It's one of those where he's clearly off balance. is going away from goal and you get your foot around it enough that it just whips into kind of like so much so it hits the side net in before the back of the net.

23:00brilliant strike but absolutely wonderful and now everybody knows who he is so he's announced himself to the world and helped Bosnia on their way through to a historic qualification.

23:09Michael Timbs:Qualification, yeah. Hopefully, it looks like they're going to be a third place too. Well, that's the weird thing. I think it was before the game I was speaking to my good friend about this yesterday and he was like before the tournament it was if you finish if you finish with it's either three points or four but i think if it's if you finish on three points but you have a goal difference of better than minus minus two or better your chance of going through are like so much higher than if you concede more than that yeah if you if your if your goal difference is is worse than minus two i think it's like your your chances just plummet so So Bosnia at the moment, well, I say at the moment, have finished the group with a goal difference of minus one.

23:52Michael Timbs:And four points, crucially. Exactly. And so even there, that extra goal, making it not just a 2-1 win, but a 3-1 win, could be absolutely key and see them through to the knockout. So, yeah. And then we get to see more of your boy. Yes, more of the boy. Al Iberco, if you remember the name. Yeah, that is definitely a stock rising, by the way. So there we go. I will go with, I will go with, I really want to give it to Isidor just because of that goal. Unbelievable strike. Because that's what I thought was, that's what I was torn between that goal and the David goal for Canada. Yeah, yeah, yeah. As like the two best goals of the day.

24:37Michael Timbs:And I guess as well, Bosnia as well. but it was just totally unexpected because it's Haiti yeah and you just go like and it's Isidore as well it's not like yeah Isidore he's been decent I think he's like he's obviously um he's been good for something yeah yeah a bit of a handful of like we've seen that he's actually you know a solid striker but not that sort of striker what's going on there so um I would say that but um no i'll go with uh gilberto mora for mexico um obviously a massive win their third out of three uh and him is like the diminutive uh playmaker just tricky player um and also he was i remember as well because i've had his eye he didn't really play too much um i think in the at least in the first game um i think he came off the bench uh but sorry but um i remember before the world cup actually listened to a few podcasts and he was frequently but like but by journos who i sort of like trust and i truly kind of they're they're they're football knowers they're they're basically not no no no no not that's that's not doing it you not doing it you um i'm yeah but it's uh like listening to them on their podcast i think quite a lot of them were like if mexico are to do well in this tournament like and and get further than they've got before one is obviously the home crown and the kind of the home advantage but also is if they can get the best out of Gilberto Moura who uh is obviously uh a sort of a young talent that they can team yeah that they can they can bring on or utilize and like he does unlock their team in a different way than like maybe some of their more like older players do um and so ever since then i've been like right i need to keep an eye out for this mora guy and obviously yesterday with the the win and how well he played um yeah he could he could be genuinely a key player for them as they get through to the knockouts and as they line up like potential potentially difficult games uh as they advance through uh like for example against us so we'll see i don't know how uh an injured declan rice could maybe deal with a mora uh there we'll see but i just hope our boy declan is okay that's the main thing um so yeah that is a stock rising for gilberto mora there uh do you have do you have any others um i i mean i don't i think obviously i doesn't need to be a player yeah i've had my concerns about the expansion of the world cup um in general because of the amount of games going to be played and what it does on the players but i am quite liking the fact that there is this uncertainty going into kind of the games even like teams that have no more games potentially left to play could still yet qualify and they're kind of hanging on to see who are the best third place finishers so it is certainly something of perhaps the benefit of the expansion of this tournament because i think the temptation to be like well you know basically everyone can qualify you know only what four teams are gonna go out of the time i think it's what the top eight of the 12 um you know only four teams that finish third are actually going to go out of all the other uh fourth place finishes of course but i i love the fact that there is this still lingering hope so much so that as we've already mentioned it can send managers like steve clark into an angry rant and storm off from an interview.

28:12I think it's part of the joy that's evolved this World Cup for sure.

28:17Michael Timbs:Yeah. Okay, nice. I like that one. That's a nice stock rising. I think we can go on to the stocks falling. I think if I went, I would actually go, we haven't mentioned Czechia. Yeah. So there's probably a reason for that. Yeah, no, there is. Yeah, of course. Like losing to Mexico in Mexico, you can forgive them. Fine. But if you do look at the, I wouldn't say Group A is a group of death, really. In that Mexico are going to be a difficult opponent this World Cup. South Africa, and especially after that first game, you're going, okay, that's not a formidable opponent in it by any stretch. And then South Korea, yeah, okay, fine.

29:00Michael Timbs:They can be a tricky World Cup opponent, I think. You're never like they're going to be amazing, but they might throw up an upset or two. But Cechia, to have finished the group with one point, not a single win, scored two goals, that is miserable. And again, same thing, they're not a world-beating side, but you would expect just with a few of their players that they have and just, I don't know, maybe I'm wrong to overestimate them maybe, but I just think that is a dismal showing from them. So I would say the Czechia football set up and federation right now is a stock forley. Yeah, and it's also the worry about what's kind of coming next, you know, for them as well because while they've had players, when you start up front, Adam Hložek, you know, I remember he was coming through, he was linked to Arsenal when he was really young as well.

30:01I think he was playing at Sparta Prague and you're looking at who's coming through next, you know for them do they have a generation of players coming up we think of like some of the smaller european nations that that have done well and you know you think about bosnia we're just talking about ala bigovic you know 18 year old talent we're looking at mexico you know 17 year old talent big name at the world cup ceccia you know long gone are the days of you know baros and rosicki and and the like and yeah they just and and soon long gone are they going to be the days of Thomas Shuchek, you know, 31 years old, Vladimir Sufow, you know, he's in his 30s now, isn't he?

30:36It's just going to be difficult, I think, for them. Patrick Schick, you know, he's reaching the end of kind of sort of his prime years too. So, very difficult to see the future of Czech football being anything. And I mean, I might be proven wrong. It might be my ignorance to their youth teams who are Czech expert might turn around and say they've been brilliant, but I, you know, it's just on the surface. It doesn't look good.

30:54Michael Timbs:Yeah. Yeah. Maybe we are as well marred by like the image we have of when we were younger and yeah all of those players that we grew up with and you know any team that has thomas rosicki is a has a i've got a soft spot for them obviously uh right any other stocks falling do we feel i think i think it's hard i mean obviously we've kind of done scotland to death i think we would be we talked about oh no but we can give them a bespoke mention in the stocks yeah i think both i mean scotland and canada get stocks falling for different reasons You know, Scotland is very much a stock falling just because of the way in which they lost their game, which was there was such optimism and hope that they might do better than they have done.

31:39But to just hand and surrender to Brazil in the way that they did. And then you've got Canada, which was a completely different type of optimism of potentially winning a group. and then equally, just like Scotland, collapse defensively inside the first 10 minutes of the second half and gift such a meagre Switzerland side two goals by lapses in judgment. These are the parts of the World Cup which are entertaining because you get these moments where there are huge mistakes and wacky goals. And that's why we love it. And when it gets to the latter stages, you don't find you get these moments happening.

32:11And there's a reason for that because better teams go through. I mean, that sounds very Michael Owen-esque as analysis goes, but that is the reality. and so you get these kind of crazy headlines and stories and I think Canada and Scotland are stock fallings for similar yet different reasons.

32:26Michael Timbs:Yeah, yeah, for sure. And it'll be a shame to see Scotland go because they have been, it's been nice to see them give it a bat at a World Cup just because it's, you don't see that often. But it is, and the fact that they do have, they've got enough that maybe they're a bit unlucky with, you know, Billy Gilmore getting injured and that sort of thing. but they do have enough you feel you feel with the expanded world cup as well they have enough to to maybe get over the line but the fact that they they'll just be annoyed that they left they left more on the on the plate yeah i mean they could have they could have made more of it in that first game and then given themselves a bit of a buffer but i guess they were just still running high on the fact that they won a world cup game so yeah fair dues but um okay nice stop falling any other ones that come to mind i would say stocks falling is i still i actually didn't speak about this uh from the previous day but uh the images of of of declan having a a little calf strapping after the game we didn't mention that and um that got me quite scared because in the i i've mentioned it to clive and elliot yesterday like during the game you saw him sort of pull up after that big run I didn't realize I didn't I didn't I try not to go on Twitter too much like after smart those those games thank you very much and um yeah it just I didn't so then I didn't see the uh the reports of like him walking out with with actually a noticeable limp which wasn't nice uh and I really hope going into our our third game but also most importantly into the knockouts he needs to play because he was so good for us and like as much as I like Elliot Anderson I think he was great he didn't play that well that game and like I think we're going to if we're going to do anything this World Cup he needs to be there so that's going to be an interesting one to follow I hope he I hope he recovers well obviously Absolutely yeah it's I said this on my morning podcast I did today my missus asked me yesterday would you rather England win the World Cup but Declan Rice is out for the whole of next season Oh my days What do you do?

34:42Michael Timbs:and I was I'm shamelessly saying I want a fit Declan rise for all of next season please yeah and you can say that because you know England aren't going to win the World Cup not with what we've seen so far so it's like I can make that deal because he's like well of course we're not going to win so obviously I'm going to take Declan I'm going to take a fit Declan please yeah yeah it's still angered quite a lot of people but yeah he is just that important and I love him so um but yeah I mean in terms of the Arsenal players we have as he had a get big Gabby at the back playing yesterday doing his thing um and yeah it's nice that he's uh recovered say from that that first game I would say Brazil Brazil in general have recovered from that that first match day showing um and again he's a he's a large part of that as well because we love him and he's big gabby at the back so um i think that will be all for the stocks massive day of football if only there was another massive day of football to look ahead to as well we have six games today again we have curacao against the ivory coast which again that is double world cup that uh ecuador against germany tunisia netherlands japan sweden which be a corker turkey a usa and paraguay against australia i mean what what ones are you uh are you looking forward to there what ones jump out at you well i've really had high hopes for ecuador at this world cup and they have just completely fallen away you know they've been so disappointing and today you know as we're recording this arsenal have announced that uh pere and capier's signed his permanent move that four and a half million pounds plus add-ons and is is it yeah that's just happened yeah they announced that about an hour ago um so first transfer done guys first try there you go this is the world cup daily slash transfer update show i didn't know oh my god that's what a day i'm gonna have today today's gonna be a good day yes uh tell me tell me more tell me more yeah so uh obviously arsenal agreed that last summer but they it was kind of one of those clever deals if you like where the option is agreed rather than the obligation uh so that it can be effectively put onto next year's accounts rather than this year's because an obligation to buy would have to be on last year's books but uh next year's so arsenal can comply more comfortably with uh financial fair play um it's quite a clever deal and also i think a lot of people quite surprised that it's a lot lower at the time the deal i think last summer was talked about is 45 million pounds to my knowledge it's 34 and a half million with add-ons i imagine that the missing 10 million is in part add-ons and in part probably a loan fee that we paid last year so okay i imagine it still is up to 45 million but just the transfer fee itself is is just short of 35 which i think you look at the transfers going on at the moment it's an absolute bargain really for arsenal wow this is the sort of analysis that you get when you get proper football journos on because you've really recovered it from me you do not get that from me you just get vibes and Arsenal fandom that is it well yeah no but I'm disappointed in what Ecuador have shown as well like just not taking their chances have just been a bit yeah lacklustre and also I mean the two games that I would look out for I mean obviously watch all the games depending on what time and where you are in the world but Japan against Sweden is going to be a corker, just a proper World Cup game.

38:25Michael Timbs:And also, what would the... Probably Netherlands, Tunisia? No, I'll go Turkey or USA. That would be a fun one. Obviously, USA already through. Turkey have been... I mean, I'm guessing they're just playing for pride now. I didn't quite understand why, even just after the second game, they already knew they were out i think it's so or was it a thing of just pure maths they were like oh we know we can't score enough or is it like mathematically they were out so if they were to beat the usa and australia were to beat paraguay they could potentially still finish third i think so i don't know why they were saying they're out yeah because that's i i'm not going crazy right it was like on the commentary yeah they were saying i remember exactly like you did yeah they said they're out yeah which which i kind of like oh yeah that's a shame and you see them fall into the floor and crying and you go okay all of these scenes make sense yeah but then after that maybe it was like a day or two after that i was like why why are they out so maybe we'll see well i mean the likelihood is they are out they they've had a horrific world cup so far and I, to be honest, don't expect them to win.

39:44Michael Timbs:They definitely could, but I think USA are genuinely like playing some good football. They're riding hard. Their confidence is through the roof and Poch has got them playing some good football. So I don't expect Turkey to turn it around enough to be able to get through. So anyway, that'll be a fun game to watch as well. But yeah, lots of games to look forward to. Today, also tomorrow, also on Saturday. Jesus, there is four straight days of six games a day. That is, have some World Cup for your eyeballs. Imagine having to do a World Cup daily show and have to watch a single one all the time. What have we signed up for?

40:27Michael Timbs:And the last Arsenal Vision, the lovely Arsenal Vision listeners can enjoy more nonsense from me tomorrow. So that's going to be fun. But thank you so much, Tom, for joining me. Pleasure. That was a lot of fun. I appreciate the insight, the candor, and the lovely, subtle, melty tones of your voice from all the way over in England. All the bottom bit just starts dripping all over your hand. A wooden stick, yeah. By tomorrow, you'll come back on and you're just nothing.

41:07Michael Timbs:You're just a skeleton. Well, that's what's good. you know it's good the camera cuts off because there's you know you got to do what you got to do when it's this hot you know on cut on straight absolutely absolutely well how many more days of uh torturous weather have you got over there uh it's it's meant to extend into next week still i mean it will call slightly but tomorrow's 35 uh saturday's 30 and then it drops into kind of mid-20s next week but okay and then it goes back up to 28s and 29s so beautiful yeah well i'm i'm actually back in London next week so you'll enjoy it I'm glad the main thing I'm glad I've missed the absolute like mental 38 degree weather because that's unfathomably hot so but anyway I'm digressing Tom thank you so much for joining me really appreciate it and keep enjoying the World Cup thank you pleasure my friend alright guys that is your World Cup daily and we will see you tomorrow enjoy the games

42:06Thank you.
