In short
How smartphones quietly reduce charisma and social presence, citing research and offering immediate fixes.

Key claims
Charisma isn’t about saying impressive things; it’s about making others feel fully attended to. Even when the phone doesn’t ring, its presence lowers closeness and conversation quality by reducing cognitive capacity and disrupting nonverbal signals. Phone checking signals “maybe” availability and increases rushed, distracted behavior.
Notable examples
A Pribilsky-Weinstein study comparing phone-present vs notebook-present conversations; Ward et al. finding smartphone presence reduces cognitive capacity (best when in another room, worst on the desk). Practical advice: remove phone from view (ideally out of the room), respond to “emotional bids” (complaints/jokes/hesitations), and slow with a two-second pause.

1:40Johnny:You want the fastest way to kill your charisma? Do not say something weird. Don't tell a bad story. Do not make a weak joke. Just pull out your phone. People think charisma is about talking well. It's not. It's about making people feel like in this moment they matter. The problem is your phone does not have to ring. You don't even need to check it. Research shows that just having it there changes the quality of the interaction. It pulls you out of the room before you ever say a word. Today, we're breaking down why your phone is quietly wrecking your presence, why that matters for charisma, and three things to do instead if you want people to actually feel you when you're in the room.
2:28Johnny:Most people treat charisma like a performance. Better lines, better stories, better timing. But charisma is usually judged before your content has even had a chance to land. People feel whether you're settled, attentive, and connected. There's good research here. In the Pribilsky-Weinstein study, pairs had conversations with either a phone present or a notebook present. The phone did not need to ring. It just had to be there. The result, lowered closeness, lowered connection, and worse conversation quality. Charisma is not how impressive what I said was. It's did the other person feel my full attention?
3:06Johnny:People don't experience you as charismatic when you seem entertaining. They experience you as charismatic when they feel chosen. There's three reasons why this matters. The strongest effects show up in meaningful conversations. The exact conversations where trust and chemistry are built. It reduces cognitive capacity. Ward and colleagues found that the mere presence of your own smartphone can reduce available cognitive capacity. Best condition? Phone in another room. Worst, phone on the desk. It erodes the nonverbal signals people read as charisma. And lastly, it erodes the nonverbal signals people read as charisma.
3:45Johnny:Charismatic nonverbal displays are built on receptivity and formidability. Warmth, attentiveness, confidence, steady presence. Fragmented attention undercuts the receptive half immediately. That means you miss the pause before someone opens up. You miss the look on their face when they're testing whether you actually care. You miss those tiny emotional bids that turn polite conversation into a real one. And this is so important because so many of us are carrying our phones everywhere in those moments that matter, in those social settings where we're trying to meet and connect with new people. And engaging presence starts with curiosity, present moment focus, not checking those devices.
4:26Johnny:And here's what most people miss. Even if you think you are listening, your phone actually changes the signal you are sending. Presence is not only internal, it is visible. When your attention is split, your body does a bunch of things. Weaker eye contact, more environmental scanning, more rushed responses, less patience with pauses. This is exactly the opposite of what charismatic people do. Focused attention, timely responses, eye contact, and distraction management are present signals. Phone checking is a commitment destroyer. In a meeting, that phone on the table says, I might actually leave this interaction mentally at any second. On a date, it says, well, you got to compete with everything going on in my phone. Or in a social setting, it says, yeah, I'm here, but I'm not really fully available. The phone turns your entire body into a maybe. Here are three ways to look more charismatic immediately.
7:41Remove the phone from the field. Not face down, not silent on the table, out of sight, pocket, bag. Ideally, out of the room when it matters. The research on cognitive load is clear. Distance helps.
7:55Johnny:If the conversation matters, Your phone should not be part of the set design. Turn towards emotional bids. Charisma grows when people feel you caught what they were really offering. A complaint, a joke, a hesitation, a small piece of self-disclosure. Those are bids. When you catch them and respond, people feel connection. Instead of, yeah, yeah, crazy. Say, damn, that sounds really frustrating. Or, man, you were proud of that and you should be. Number three, slow your pace. Phones train urgency. Charisma requires steadiness. Use the two-second pause. Let their last sentence land. Hold eye contact a beat longer.
8:38Let silence do some work.
8:40Johnny:The charismatic person is not the fastest responder in the room. It's usually the person least afraid of the moment. And that's important. Calm authority. No fidgeting. Grounded body language and letting the room adjust to your pace actually makes you more charismatic. So here's the challenge for this week. In your next important conversation, do these three things. Put your phone fully away before it starts. Maybe even put it on airplane mode so there's no way you would get a notification. Catch one emotional bid and respond to it, turning towards it. And number three, use an extra beat of silence before you speak, the pause.
9:21Then notice what changes. Do people open up faster? Do they hold eye contact longer? Do they stop performing and start connecting?
9:30Johnny:Because once people feel fully received by you, your charisma goes up without you trying to be more charismatic. And this is exactly why social intelligence matters more than ever. Everybody is getting better at sending messages. In fact, many of us are using AI to write those messages. Fewer people are good at making others feel seen. That's the difference between actually being around people and actually moving people. If you want the frameworks for this, not some vague advice, this is exactly what we build with our clients inside the X Factor Accelerator. How to read the moment, how to respond in real time, and how to build the kind of presence that changes the way people treat you at work, socially, and in your relationships.
